MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk While Margaret Maccoll is away enjoying a well-deserved holiday, I have had the privilege of meeting more of the inspiring people that make up our wonderful community.

At the Vietnam Veterans Day service at Cooroy Peregian Beach’s Jim Murrell moved many with his heartwrenching poem dedicated to the first of many mates he lost during the war.

It encompasses life-long experiences many veterans will identify with and, I believe, helps those of us who have never experienced the horrors of war first hand better understand what our veterans have gone through, and continue to live with.

With Jim’s kind permission we have reproduced the poem on page 11.

Vietnam Veteran’s Day was originally chosen to commemorate the men of D Company 6 RAR, who fought at the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August, 1966, but has become a day for all Vietnam Veterans.

The solemn service at Tewantin concluded with a touching reminder from Parade Commander Butch Collins to the former service men gathered in front of the cenotaph.

REBOOTING THE NOOSA SURF FEST

BY TESSA MAPSTONE The reset button is being hit on the Noosa Festival of Surfing, and organisers want all locals to have their say in how the event will take shape.

Noosa Malibu Club president, Craig Johnson, said with new partners World Surfaris on board, it was a chance to bring the festival back to a grass-roots level.

“We see this as a great opportunity to reset the festival and we want to give it that local vibe, have local input in the first instance, and as part of, showcasing our local surfing industry,” he said.

“We want to give the local business community the opportunity to express their interest and have say.”

The club will hold a public meeting on 28 August, from 6.30pm, at the Noosa Tigers AFL Club, to allow the whole community to share their thoughts and ideas about the festival.

It’s the same process the Malibu Club went through after the unexpected split from the festival’s previous organisers, to consider where they wanted to take the festival into the future.

The rebooted Noosa Festival of Surfing will have a strong focus on fun.

Mr Johnson said there was never a question as to whether festival would continue, it was just a matter of what form it would take.

“We asked our membership base ‘tell us what you like about the festival, tell us what you’d like to see changed, tell us your ideas’,” he said.

The core message that came out of those talks were the need to support the local surfing industry, to create a cool, fun vibe, and to showcase local surfers.

“We want to move away from the big shebang and get back to basics,” Mr Johnston said.

“Surfing is pretty much a simple sport, you’re in the ocean with your board and that’s it.

“Our only junior club member that put anything in writing said he just wanted to have fun and meet cool dudes from the surfing industry, and it was almost like we all thought ‘he’s right, we agree, that’s what we want as well’.”

Members also highlighted the importance of being environmentally friendly and looking after the beautiful beach that is so important to the Noosa community.

And Mr Johnston said having an event management partner who was on the same

wave was vital to achieving the vision.

“World Surfaris has a strong reputation within the surfing industry, and they’re worldclass managers in their own right,” he said.

“They’re a nice fit to ensure the continuance of the festival.”

Australia’s premier full-service surf tourism provider, World Surfaris offers quality surf tours to many of the world’s leading surfing destinations, and have been long0-standing co-sponsors of the festival for many years.

World Surfaris chief executive officer, John Finlay, said he was delighted to be able to make a contribution to the festival.

“We look forward to close collaboration with the club and the Noosa Community to put on a fabulous festival in 2019,” he said.

“We have a few ideas that we hope will breathe new life into this much-loved event.”

Some things are expected to remain though, including the festival’s usual timeframe in early March, competition divisions, and some favourite events.

“You can’t go past the dogs and the dog surfing, you can’t deny it’s a crowd pleaser,” Mr Johnston said. ●

KERBSIDE CLEAN UP IS SET TO BE REVIEWED Kerbside collection could be under threat as unsightly piles of waste sit on the roadside for weeks and unacceptable rubbish dumped.

Residents have been calling on the council to end the program, Noosa Council waste manager, Wayne Schafer, said, and it will be reviewed after the current collection period ends.

“Unfortunately, the service is being abused, with people using it as an excuse to dump massive quantities of rubbish on street corners and outside other people’s homes - in fact, wherever they like,” he said.

“Much of the material is not even accepted as part of the kerbside collection, such as tyres, mattresses, chemicals and even broken glass.

“On the fringes of the Shire we are also finding extremely large piles of waste appearing, potentially from residents of neighbouring shires who don’t enjoy a kerbside collection service.

“We have to revisit many of these locations to remove the piles of waste at considerable cost, which is not fair to ratepayers who do the right thing.

“At any other time of the year, this type and volume of waste being dumped on

A Tewantin man has been extradited to Victoria where he will face a murder charge.

John Spencer White, 62, was arrested after police searched his home last Thursday.

In Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday Mr White was ordered to travel with Victorian Detectives to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Last month the remains of a man who had been missing for 17 years were found in a wheelie bin in Melbourne’s south-east.

John Christianos, 40, was a graphic artist who was reported missing in 2001.

ace painting, a sausage sizzle, buskers and Kylie cupcakes ... it will be full-on frivolity, fun and fundraising this Saturday at St Andrew's Drive shopping centre in Tewantin.

For organisers and local bakery shop owners, Tony and Karen Reeve, however, the laughter will be underpinned with sadness.

Thirteen years ago, on March 13, 2005, their daughter, Kylie, a 33-year-old mother of two boys, took her life at her home in Tewantin, an act which has left them still

struggling with what happened and why.

"At the time we didn't know who to turn to. We were so confused because there were so many things to deal with. The police gave us a card with the StandBy Response Service number and two members of its crisis team came to see us," Karen told Noosa Today.

"They were really good. They told us what to expect and gave us practical advice about where we could get help and support.

They said things were never going to be the same and they were right. It does change your life."

After Kylie's death, Tony took over the business, left his trade as a painter and learned to bake, supported by Karen

who had been a pastry chef before getting married.

Tony found comfort by becoming involved with StandBy Response and worked on its reference committee. "That helped me, seeing how everything works, the police, the counsellors, the ambulance men. They are great people. I have a lot of respect for what they do."

Karen made a new life around her nurturing role to Kylie's children, Mitchell and Reece who were nine and five. "They were my saviours," she said.

The month after Kylie's death, Tony's family decided to help the boys. His brother Ted held a bush dance in Geelong, where

Kylie grew up. and about 500 people who had known her as a loving, compassionate young woman turned up.

Said Tony: "The dance raised $21,000 and we formed the Kylie Foundation. Most of the money went to the boys' education and we gave $2000 to Standby for all their help and support."

Tony and Karen are now active fundraisers for StandBy Support After Suicide Service, part of the not-for-profit, national United Synergies group which has its head office in Tewantin. They have a donation box on the bakery counter.

"It helps provide resources within the local StandBy team. The money the Kylie Foundation raises within Tewantin goes back into activities locally."

Christopher said it was not uncommon to have people like Tony and Karen, as local partners, helping people who have also been bereaved.

"What we do, as well as with police, ambulance, the coroner and funeral directors, is offer our availability at any time to facilitate access to a prearranged system of local community groups and services."

"We work with Lifeline, CWA, Red Cross and local volunteers who, to give just one example, make 'Care Bears.' "'Care Bears' are knitted by community

members for use in support sessions to provide strategies and comfort for individuals and allow them to share their feelings and express themselves.

"They provide a focus point, particularly for young children.

"We are also looking at means to link people with peers with similar experiences and help limit the social isolation and loneliness often felt following the loss of a loved one to suicide.

"They find comfort in talking to those who have had a similar experience."

Tony knows about this. Over the years he's had people, grieving about their loss of someone, come into the bakery. "I take them out the back, make them a cup of tea, listen and offer advice about who to go and see.

"One gentleman who comes to the bakery lost his daughter years ago. He wrote a letter and gave it to us. Just re-reading this letter brings tears to your eyes.

"You don't know people's stories until they talk to you. They only open up a little

bit when they know you have come through the same thing."

This is the thirteenth year Outlook Shopping Centre has rocked with friends, supporters and locals enjoying what is now called "Kylie Cupcake Day." "We make cupcakes with a K in the centre and sell them. They're very popular," Tony said. "We get a lot of support for the day. Darren the butcher next door supplies the sausages and we get raffle prizes from the local BWS, the RSL, Noosa Golf Club, and our suppliers, Tetrie and Norco milk and Today's Juice."

He smiled: "Come along on Saturday.

You'll get a free juice with every sausage!" ●

HEIGHTENED FIRE SEASON

SOCIAL CHARTER Noosa Council has adopted a Social Justice Charter to outline its commitment to the principles of fairness, equity and inclusiveness.

Mayor Tony Wellington said staff developed the new Charter in consultation with the Community Roundtable, a Council-assembled group made up of representatives from a wide range of State agencies, welfare groups, service organisations and charities.

He said the principles contained in the declaration would underpin and inform almost all of the council's activities, like how to allocate grants, determine fees, charges and rates. ●

BY TESSA MAPSTONE With dry conditions across the Noosa area and lower-than-average rainfalls forecast, the region is facing a heightened fire danger period.

Unseasonal rain in June has left more moisture in the soil locally than in other parts of the state, but Queensland Fire and Emergency services Area Director for the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, Andrew Allan, warned residents not to get complacent.

"It's not quite as dry as other parts of the south east corner and other areas to the west and north, but we're only a couple of weeks behind," he said.

"Our grasses are certainly dry; in the last couple of weeks it has certainly dried out a lot."

Now is the time, he said, for people in rural and semi-rural areas to reduce fire fuel loads, through controlled burns, slashing, or bringing animals in for grazing, as well as tidying up yards, clearing gutters and cutting hazards around the house.

"There's still a bit of a window for hazard mitigation, but that window will close pretty quickly," Mr Allan said.

"Once conditions become unfavourable for controlled burning we will stop it."

Anyone planning on conducting a burn of more than 2m in any direction (including up) must get a permit from their local Rural Fire Brigade Warden. Contact details can be found on the Rural Fire Service website at ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

SECURITY FUNDING

LAST CHANCE: The window for hazard-reduction burns is closing as fire season bears down.

Suburban residents who live near bushland and national park areas, as well as those living in rural and semi-rural zones, should also make sure they have a plan in place for what they would do in the event of a bushfire.

"Look at what your plan will be, whether you're going to stay and defend the house or whether you're going to leave, and if you're not going to leave you need to know what you want to take with you, like passports, photos and animals," Mr Allan said.

"If you do decide do leave, you'll need to be leaving early, not when fire is upon you.

"Make sure you have a bushfire survival plan in place, it's very important."

QFES commissioner Katarina Carroll said given the forecast for the season ahead it was vital everyone did their bit now to prepare.

Community organisations can apply for funding to deliver crime prevention or activity-based youth engagement projects, with the launch of round three of the Safer Communities Fund.

The program offers up to $30 million to boost community safety and security.

Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien said the best way to make communities safer and tackle crime and anti-social behaviour was to prevent it from happening in the first place.

"This funding can be used for projects to install CCTV cameras and security lighting which provides an extra layer of protection in the community, acting as a significant deterrent as it increases the likelihood of catching criminals," he said.

THE ROAD TO WAR

BY TESSA MAPSTONE AUSTRALIA’s involvement in the Vietnam War began with a small commitment of 30 military advisors in 1962.

By the time the last Australian personnel were withdrawn in 1972 about 60,000 Australians had served in Vietnam, including ground troops, naval forces and air assets.

Of those, 520 servicemen and one army nurse were killed, and more than 3000 were wounded.

At the Vietnam Veterans Day service in Cooroy on Saturday, Ian Mansfield said those figures left out the veterans who suffered from post-traumatic stress, or who had tragically taken their own lives since the end of the war.

“Special ceremonies like this are not intended to glorify war, but are held to remember the courage and sacrifice made by our veterans,” he said.

“I particularly wish to thank all the Vietnam veterans here today for their service to our great country.

“I would also like to thank their partners, family and friends who have supported them and stood by them, even when times may have been tough.

“And finally, we should always remember the 521 Australian service personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam to serve our wonderful country.

“Lest we forget.”

Mr Mansfield said there were a number

of enduring legacies or images from the Vietnam war, like the Huey helicopter, or aircraft spraying the defoliant agent orange.

“For me another one is land mines,” he said.

“Land mines are a terrible, indiscriminate weapon, and they were used by both sides during the war.

“They were laid randomly and their location was not mapped or marked.

“Landmines were the leading cause of casualties among the American troops in some years, as high as 60%.

“The North Vietnamese forces had extensive use of land-mines and homemade mines and booby traps.

“Even the Australian troops laid an illfated 11km-long barrier mine field in Long Dat, supposedly to stop infiltration.

“Unfortunately at night the Viet Cong were able to sneak in and steal the land mines and reuse them against our own troops.

“It’s estimated up to 10% of Australian casualties in the war were caused by mines lifted from this mine field and then reused again against us.”

Land mines are still causing civilian casualties in Vietnam, Mr Mansfield said, at a rate of about 10 per year.

“All sides suffer during conflict,” he said.

“Long after the shooting stops, the explosive remnants of war that remain pose a long-lasting threat to civilian populations.” ●

Vietnam Veterans on parade at the Tewantin Vietnam Veteran’s Day service.

ON PARADE AT TEWANTIN Veterans marched into the Tewantin town square on Saturday to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day. Among those gathered were a handful of former members of RAAF 2 Squadron, which had eight aircraft and 11 air crews in Vietnam in 1967.Lloyd Brown said bombing missions, combat skyspot and ferry flights kept, plus maintenance and voluntary work at a local orphanage kept crews busy.

“The squadron lost two aircraft to enemy fire during operations in Vietnam,” he said.”Both were hit by SA2 surface-to-air missiles, whilst on combat sky spot missions.

“Thankfully, one crew ejected safely and both members were rescued 30 hours later.” The other crew unfortunately wen in with their aircraft. The crash site was found

VIETNAM VETERAN FEELS LIKE A MAN BLESSED

BY TESSA MAPSTONE Jim Murrell lives in Peregian Beach, but in 1968-69 the jungles of Vietnam were his home.

A conscripted soldier, Jim was a forward scout in the 4 RAR (Anzac) Battalion.

As he moved through the dense forests, he hoped that if an enemy sniper had him in their sights, they would aim for his head and be a good shot.During his time in Vietnam Jim watched his mates die, and was injured twice. His experiences left him eternally grateful for life and all the good things in it.”I wake up every morning, I throw my legs over the side of the bed, I take a deep breath, I open the curtains and I look up at the sky and I see the two fresh-faced 21-year-old kids who were killed alongside of me,” he said.”And every moment of my day is good after that, because I’m still here.”

Jim wrote ‘Ode to a mate’ in honour of the first of many of his mates killed in Vietnam, and he recited it at the Cooroy

service on Vietnam Veterans Day last Saturday. It was the second time he’d performed the poem, after his debut at the Sunshine Coast Poetry Slam Championships earlier this month, bringing tears to the room. Jim has no fond memories from the war except for the mateship, but despite the horrific situations he faced, he felt like it could have been worse.

“I always think it was nothing like the blokes who fought in the trenches in World War Two and World War One, when the whistle was blown and they went over the top to their deaths,” he said.”At least we had a chance in Vietnam.”

Now, in 2018, Jim believes the best things in life are free, and that good health, good luck, happiness and prosperity are all that matter.

And with his wife, Wendy, by his side for 42 years, and two daughters working in the corporate world in New York City, he feels like a man blessed. ● noosatoday.com.au

Why did we fall for that call to war?

EKKA CROWN FOR BRIGHT STAR

The generous people of Cooroy, Tewantin and Peregian Beach have dug deep to help Aussie farmers doing it tough through the big dry.

Volunteers from the Noosa-Tewantin Branch of the Red Cross raised more than $2000 on Saturday for the Help Aussie farmers in drought-affected communities appeal.

"It was wonderful to watch our community in action," Marilla Murphy said.

The branch will also hold a sausage sizzle at Bunnings from 8am-4pm on Friday 24 August, as a final fundraising event for the appeal. â—?

Between family, work placement and completing a degree, life has been busy for Laura Bleasdale-Adkins.

But making time for a trip to the Ekka with her Hungarian Viszla Chanoz Roknrose Starbright paid off, with the threeyear old female taking out Best of Breed.

Both Laura and Cassie - as the pooch is affectionately known by her family - were exhausted after an early start, long trip, preshow pampering and running endless laps of the show ring, but Laura said it was worth the effort.

"Cassie performed outstandingly," Laura said.

"She showed her socks off whole day, she was cool, calm and collected. She had a great time."

It was the first time the pair had been to a show since November since last year.

Before taking out the top prize for the breed, Cassie was awarded top spot in the Open Bitch class.

"I actually did cry at that stage, I was very exhausted and very emotional," Laura said.

"When Cassie won that award there were lots of public watching and they all gave a cheer; the judge was very animated giving that 'hurrah' type of thing."

NEWS DRIVING UP SENIORS’ SAFETY

Noosa Mini Strings and the String Ensemble performed at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.

Ms Eckley formed the Noosa Orchestra in 2010 and has taught strings at Good Shepherd Luther College Noosa since 2005.

At that time there was only one Noosa String Ensemble but in 2015 it split into two ensembles - The Noosa Mini Strings and the Noosa Ensemble, for Grade 7 to 12 students - due to its rapid growth and popularity.

The Noosa Ensemble placed third in their section in the eisteddfod.

Noosa Mini Strings is a community ensemble made up of students from Noosa and surrounding areas.

Any student in Grade 4 to 6 who can play a stringed instrument is more than welcome to join.

Practice is at 3.30pm to 5pm on Tuesday afternoons at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College Theatrette. ●

MONTHS of practise perfecting their sound led the Noosa Mini String Players to a major win at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.

Pitched against an array of school orchestras from around the region, it was not an easy win for the primary school players, aged between 9 and 12 years.

They took out first place in the Primary Aged String Ensemble category, and second in the Full String Orchestra Primary section.

The Mini String players said that it was all worth the many hours of practise, and they were extremely excited by their win.

They said that not only was the eisteddfod great experience, but their playing had improved and that they had made good friends along the way.

Road crashes can devastate lives, and seniors are at risk.

Last year 5.7 percent of Queensland's licenced drivers were aged over 75 years, but 14.2 percent of road deaths involved people in that age bracket.

To help boost the safety of senior road users, the University of the Sunshine Coast will co-host a free seminar for seniors.

Guest speakers will include USC researchers, Queensland Police Service and Department of Transport and Main Roads representatives.

USC Senior Research Fellow Bridie Scott-Parker, who is undertaking a study into senior road safety, will outline risk management strategies that senior road users can follow.

"Unfortunately getting hurt on the road is a major problem for seniors and it's a growing problem world-wide," Dr ScottParker said.

"As our bodies become more fragile, a car crash could lead to a lengthy hospital stay, pneumonia or death.

"I'll be talking about risk management and what to do behind the wheel, while also giving tips on pedestrian safety. This is all about keeping people safe."

The Queensland Road Safety Week Sunshine Coast co-ordinator, Police Inspector Michael Miley, said refreshing road rules knowledge was a simple way to improve road safety for everyone.

As an MP I am asked why I do not sign petitions, nor put my face or name to websites lobbying on an issue.

Why? Because I believe that as a representative of the people of Noosa, I have forgone for the duration of my service my particular beliefs, though when asked I will give my personal view and clearly define it is exactly that.

When I vote in chamber it is on behalf of Noosa, not a political party, not an ideology, and most definitely not Sandy Bolton.

Just as with issues where MPs who are members of major political parties vote as a bloc, on conscience issues (where MPs are allowed to vote as they choose) - I will undertake the same process of research, obtaining community feeling as well listening to debate before voting as with any other Bill.

That does not mean that I will not put Noosa's stance forward prior to that vote, and there may be times I will need to do that.

During this Parliament, we have yet to see a Bill where the major parties will allow their members a conscience vote.

That is about to change.

First, the decriminalisation of abortion which is due to be debated in October.

The Government is to be commended on undertaking this review to bring laws dating back over 100 years into the modern era.

The Law Reform Commission review,

organisations, who have enlightened me with the diverse considerations women take into account including: religion, family duress, financial distress, housing and even adoption laws.

I trust through this process we can discuss these respectfully and work towards solutions to these with deep compassion for women and their families.

Second, voluntary euthanasia, or voluntary assisted dying (VAD).

From the inpouring of letters, calls, discussions on the street and in gatherings, to a survey taken by Glen Elmes in 2015 where 79% of respondents were in favour of choice, it is clear that Noosa is very passionate and supportive of VAD. After comforting those that have witnessed their loved ones' last days or are imminently faced with doing so, I put a Question Without Notice to our Premier as to when this much-needed review would commence.

The Premier in response agreed it was a discussion that Queensland needed to have.

Having witnessed the empathy and compassion within Government ranks, I feel confident that they will be doing whatever they can to start this review, and I will continue to work on behalf of our community and the many residents impacted to see this review launched as soon as possible.

I look forward as always to your thoughts and views through Noosa 360 where we shall post updates. â—?

PEOPLE SHOULD CHOOSE PM It seems absurd in this day and age that the Australian people do not have a say as to who is Prime Minister.

Why is it okay for the Coalition in the Federal Parliament to cheat the electorate by taking matters into their own hands, like the opposition did twice in recent times?

It’s time that we revert back to the democratic process and allow for the Australian people to determine who their Prime Minister is, not parliamentary colleagues.

Otherwise, our political system is farcical.

A democracy should be about the people, not the politicians and their selfish decisions to save face, and ultimately, an election.

A Prime Minister should be determined at the ballot box, not behind closed doors in a party room.

DROUGHT FUNDING The LNP government, ignoring the multiple disasters that climate change is raining down upon our nation, have directed a record amount of money to a coterie of executives who have risen to the top of corporations that have supported climate denial. In the meantime, while we are experiencing record high temperatures, and severe drought, they are supporting the energy industries that use monumental amounts of water: coal and CGS mining.

It is disgraceful that, knowing that the roasting of the planet will only get worse, they are offering our debt-ridden, droughtstricken farmers LOANS. SPACE FORCE CONCERNS The United States of America’s plan for a Space Force risks an escalation of a highly competitive and tense space arms race.

This new branch of the United States military aims, in President Donald Trump’s words, to create a “war-fighting domain, like the land, sea and air.”

These deeply concerning sentiments from arguably the most powerful man on the planet risk irrevocably skewing the conversation about space, distorting the reality as to what space actually represents.

It is troubling that many military commentators now postulate that war in space is inevitable.

The international rules that govern space dictate responsible behaviour and freedom of access. Properly respected, they allow for inspiration, optimism, development, innovation and commercial enterprise. A militaristic perspective threatens the existing legal regime and peaceful status quo.

From a geopolitical stance, Trump’s Space Force will be a sign to other space-faring nations that there is leadership contest in terms of space military. This will likely set a standard for other nations to meet or better.

With space the next frontier for strategic military action, we must avoid making the same terrible mistakes that have transpired throughout human history on planet Earth.

10 DAYS OF NON-STOP JAZZ

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sydney and Melbourne's finest jazz musicians, The Australian Jazz Ensemble, team up with Noosa Chorale at The J for shows tomorrow night and Saturday to launch the 10-day, non-stop Noosa Jazz Party.

Headlined "Showtime in Las Vegas" the shows at The J are a mix of jazz classics and timeless songs by star entertainers like Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley.

Jazz lovers can expect toe-tapping performances from Melbourne cabaret singing star Juliarna Clark, trumpet player Peter Gaudion, drummer Rod Gilbert and, of course, the Chorale.

Among the 18 songs they will sing are "New York New York," "Barnyard Boogie," "Viva Las Vegas" and "That Old Black Magic."

This is the fourth year the two Noosa Chorale and Noosa Heads Jazz Club have combined their talents and Jazz Club president, Richard Stevens, calls it a "delightfully exciting moment for two separate local groups with a love of music."

The whole of Noosa will also jump throughout the following week with bands popping who knows where plus live gigs in restaurants like Fratellini, Miss Moneypenny's, Riverdeck, Sunshine Beach Surf Club, El Capitano, RACV Resort and Cafe A Le Monde.

And starting on Thursday August 30 there will be four nights of non-stop jazz at The J featuring 30 of what Richard calls 26 NOOSA TODAY

"the cream of Australia's jazzmen" who are coming to Noosa for the Party.

One of them is long-time Jazz Party favourite trumpet and sax player Brett Iggulden.

Brett, who has the OAM for his services to jazz, was among the first to come to Noosa when the Party started 26 years ago.

"I even came before then to help Richard and Frank Johnson raise money for the first one."

Now 72, he began playing when he was just 14 years old. A member of Red Onions Jazz band, Brett became one of Australia's most well-known groups of the 60's, appearing at jazz festivals in different parts of the world for more than 50 years now.He says the quality of music at the Jazz Party is as high as any festival he has been at.

"Richard knows what he is doing," says Brett.

The 2018 Jazz Party ends on Sunday, September 2.

There will be a free concert in the park at Lions Park Noosaville, starting at 2pm on the final day of the festival.

ONE OF THEATRE’S GREATS Louis Nowra's darkly funny 1992 play Cosi occupies a special place in Australian Theatre History. Noosa Arts Theatre's Jane Rivers is directing a spectacular version of this much loved Australian classic.

The play, which sees a young director's attempt to stage Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte with the patients inside a mental health hospital, has been revived many times, was turned into a successful film, and has been on and off the school syllabus in the decades since its premiere. Jane has great vision for this incarnation and is loving working with the talented cast to create a vibrant production Cosi.

'Laughter is the best medicine' and Noosa Arts Theatre's version of Cosi certainly promises there will be no shortage of guffaws, giggles and hearty explosions. A realist drama set in the 1970's, Cosi explores interactions between a young theatre director and a group of asylum patients.

The play is described as 'funny, warm and wonderfully mad' but it can be argued that its highlights are in fact the insights it offers into the lives of those who are no longer considered 'normal' by society's standards.

Cosi is Australian theatre's great take on madness, filtered with a distinctly local sense of place and of humour. Noosa Arts Theatres production in September is not to be missed!!

BY HOLLIE HARRIS I'm always on the look-out for a bowl-meover dining experience and a place that really doesn't need my help has left a great impression with me which lingers still, after a couple of weeks. I share with you my genuine experience at the uber-popular Sum Yung Guys in Sunshine Beach.

I'm sure most of Noosa has attempted to book into to SYG on more than one occasion. Yes, these guys are busy, busy, busy. I have had to wait over a month for my group booking so I impatiently turned up for an on the spot dinner for two.We scored a seat at the bar, among all the fun and noise of cocktail shakers rattling, wait staff buzzing in and out of pass and a loud hum across the room - the perfect seats for a real experience.

This place has it going on and I found myself wondering if customers were still flocking for the Masterchef fame. It didn't take long to find out there was far more to this place than the much-loved Matt Sinclair.

In the dead of winter, beach drinks rule the day and cocktails were muddled and slurped on both sides of us.

Sum Yung Guys is so ambitious that it's everything and nothing in particular, more of a feeling than the Asian vibe you can actually pin down.

They say they have designed a space which "has a warmth and energy that resembles the food we put on the plate," and

deal. I don't want a sugary shadow of a duck curry, I want it hot like it should be."

He replied 'Do you want it Thai hot?'

Bugger. I flash-backed to a time where I'd been asked this before and I had replied "how hot's Thai hot?" to which the waiter had floated two flat palms in the air above the table. The high one was Thai hot and the lower one was ordinary hot. The high one looked really high. Eye wateringly, lip numbingly high.

I caved and went for ordinary Westerner hot.

We struggled to finish the servings, which, for two foodies, was impressive.

Off the 'large' menu we chose the green curry. Ora King salmon, lemongrass, wild ginger and red curry of confit duck, okra, kaffir. Both priced around $35, it's been a long time since I had a meal truly worth those dollars.

The red curry was up there with the best I've had. Perfectly hot, balanced with sweet and salty flavours within the rich red gravy and two large crispy duck legs which were enough for the two of us and our beer-full bellies. The meat was juicy and fragrant and best eaten with your fingers in my opinion.

Expect drips and finger licking.

But it was the green curry that really knocked my socks off. This dish is so special. Topped with a mysterious green paste which is a pungent, tangy and a solid punch to the tasebuds. I wanted to put that paste in my bag, get the recipe, buy a bottle of it; anything to get the flavour again. If you're reading this Yung Guys, bottle that stuff and sell it!

We ordered a Roti, $7.50; a bit steep for one, I'd say, but the flaky, crunchy layers were the perfect crispness to scoop up a bowl of curry sauce and well-worth the extra few extra coins.

The house-made Chiang Mai Sausage with O.G chilli jam has your beer snacks sorted and i've already chosen the mediums I'm trying next time - Tom Kha Mussels fragrant coconut broth with fresh herbs and Crying Tiger Short Ribs with lemongrass and crispy garlic.

Sum Yung Guys succeeds with a trio of tricks; a fun and cheeky atmosphere, staff who seem to love their work, alongside mind-blowing Asian fare that had me dead quiet for a good twenty minutes. That's some feat.

Word on the street is they are opening takeaway next door very soon. It just gets better. â—?

This National Stroke Week (September 3-9) the Stroke Foundation is spreading the word that 80 percent of strokes can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Bicycling Australia is bringing its third major Gran Fondo cycling event, The Noosa Classic, to the Sunshine Coast on Sunday August 26.

The Noosa Classic will take more than 1200 riders through the stunning Noosa Hinterland to truly experience the lush and breathtaking scenery of the region. With the choice of either the 160km Maxi Classic, 120km Challenge Classic or the 45km Social Classic, there's a ride for everyone.

Noosa Council's Jess Glasgow, a lifelong resident, keen cyclist and avid supporter of the event, is thrilled to have the cycling classic coming to the region.

"It's a must for any cycling enthusiast," he said. "The ride its self will blow your mind and the village atmosphere, in where the roots of Noosa were born (read park oval).

All riders will start from Goodwin Street next to Read Park, Tewantin. They'll be sent in waves, starting at 6.30am - 7.30am, on Sunday August 26. Goodwin street will be closed for traffic from 10.00pm Saturday August 25th until 5.00pm Sunday August 26th. Additionally, Gyndier Drive will be closed from 6.15am until 7.45am on Sunday August 26.

The following locations are some spots

we welcome our spectators to observe the riders; Start line -Read Park, Tewantin, Eumundi range road lookout, Imbil showground, Kenilworth skyring ck and Old Bruce Highway, Cooran, Kin Kin and the Finish Line at Goodwin Street, Tewantin.

Read Park is not only the start and finish location but also home to the Noosa Classic event village.

A buzzing hub of cycling stalls,

1.00pm - 4.00pm, however with minimum set up.

Both the 160km maxi course and 120km challenge course take riders through stunning and highly-regarded scenic routers in the Noosa Hinterland region. They'll return through the lush, perennially green Mary Valley, through Kin Kin and past Lake Cootharaba. The 45km riders head out to Boreen Point and loop back for the return ride. A spectacular day of riding for a special event!

Lastly, the Noosa Classic is about more than just cycling. Their successful charity strategy is "You Decide. You Choose." This unique approach to fundraising gives the power and flexibility back to our riders.

We've attracted hundreds of avid cyclists, all keen to enjoy a great day of riding and raising funds for a cause they're most passionate about.

WALK AMONG THE WILDFLOWERS The wildflowers are out and Noosa's spectacular August weather is providing near-perfect conditions for people to get out and enjoy the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival, which is on now.

ANOTHER SAFE SEASON ON THE BEACH The Sunshine Coast Surf Life Saving Branch Annual Report for the 2017/18 season tells us that this Branch is still in good hands; and with projects such as the Annual Camp Commando going from strength to strength our future is indeed looking good.

Our record of no lives lost between the flags has been upheld. In achieving this a total of 409 rescues were performed. This was the result of 12,260 members of our Sunshine Coast Clubs, stretching from Rainbow Beach to Redcliffe Peninsular, volunteering a total of 150,506 hours. In first aid 6,486 cases were treated.

When we look at the latter it is only right that we pause for a moment to thank our paramedics and police for their support.

The paramedics for their quick response following emergency cases and the police with their assistance when required for vehicle and crowd control in and around surf club areas.

Both of these factors are of the utmost importance in achieving a quick response time for conveying the badly injured (for example spinal injuries) to hospital. Further to police attendance the appearance of foot patrols (along such areas as the Noosa Board Walk) and the sighting of a patrol vehicle in the parking areas are indeed very comforting for the families who visit our beaches.

Once they step onto the sand their safety is under our care; it is not just in the water that they receive our attention.

With regard to Preventative Actions

Camp Commando. a total of 15,347 were recorded. These actions occur when patrol members quickly talk to people heading into areas outside the flags. This plus the advice given to beach goers, in particular those from overseas, is also of the utmost importance.

SENIOR QUALIFYING FINAL

Awards were studied for and passed. This tells us that our endeavor to maintain a high standard of proficiency is being achieved.

In his annual report Branch President John Thorpe stated, "In the 2017/18 season more than 1.2 million visited our famous Sunshine Coast beaches whereby

over 140,000 hours were spent vigilantly protecting the community.

"Well done to each and every member who contributed to this commendable achievement."

Regarding our two local clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads their contribution was as followers; Sunshine Beach 9,151 hours of patrolling and Noosa Heads 16,127.

Well done to both clubs.

Camp Commando continues to be a huge success with this years attendance being the best ever. "Nearly 130 u/14 and u/15 participants and more than 30 leaders took part in the program labelled Camp Commando Bush Bash. The camp places strong emphases on team- building, networking and introducing participants to the various pathways within surf lifesaving.

Feedback on the program was again overwhelmingly positive."

It is interesting to note the number of members whose career choice is now being influenced by these programs. Organisers expressed their thanks to all involved and in particular Defense Force Recruiting for their continued support.

All those involved or wishing to become involved in the Noosa Seahorse Nippers are cordially invited to mark Saturday 1st September as the opening of yet another season for this great organisation. The Rococo's bar and bistro Noosa Tigers will once again host the Caloundra Panthers this Saturday with two pretty important differences from a fortnight ago.

One, the game won't be played at night but at 2.10 pm and two; the game this week is a qualifying final with the victor moving on to challenge Maroochydore in a major second semi-final final in ten days time.

Yes we are finally at the business end of the season and I'm sure we will get an enormous home town crowd to Weyba road this Saturday to watch both the Tigers reserve grade and senior grade show their skills. Noosa tuned up last weekend with a comfortable 10-goal victory over Burleigh on the Gold Coast with Jack Gleeson and the O'Dwyer brothers the pick of the Tigers in a pretty even and solid team performance. Coach Sammy Faure booted four goals in a nice return as he continues his rehab from hip injury whilst it was the across-the-ground pressure that had much to do with the victory.

Selection is always a debatable issue, particularly at this time of the year, however Faure and his assistants have a very decent player list to pick from. I must mention the recent retirement of Danny O'Brien who for time constraints and family reasons decided to hang up the boots last week. Danny just a terrific servant to the Noosa Tigers over the past decade and his highlight reel skill wise would be something to treasure. He is also a fantastic teacher of the game to our Colts and who can forget last year's reserve grade premiership win with Danny in charge. Thank you from everyone at the club Danny!

Only a month of football to go and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. The feeling around Tigerland is certainly a confident excitement with Noosa knowing that on the eve of finals they have beaten everyone still left to contend. Match winners like Templeton, Hill, Fitzpatrick, McDonald ,Stack and Laskey will be ready to raise the bar over the next three weeks. Our defence with Lambourn, Maher, Woods and Gleeson will continue to be rock solid as the tigers will look to Delbridge, Kenny, Stewart and Faure to kick a winning score. The best of luck to all Noosa Tigers junior teams who start their finals campaign also this weekend and a big congratulations to

Craig Schiller from The Rise Noosa apartments who took home the $5000 in our major cash draw last Sunday.

Noosa Under 14 Red Despite being dealt a comprehensive defeat in their last game of the year, Noosa Red finished the year on a high note with a gutsy performance on Sunday. Playing against what clearly is a division one side in Caloundra, the division two2 tigers put up a great fight but couldn't match their stronger and older opposition. The final score was Caloundra 11.11.77 to Noosa 1.2.8.

Jack Leary finished the season in style with numerous possessions and great tackles throughout the game.

Jaxon Membrey was terrific at both ends of the ground and set up a lot of play for the Tigers. Torin Flanigan was tough across the half back line and didn't give up all day. Despite finishing one spot out of the finals in fifth place, the boys should be proud of themselves. They played with great courage and discipline all season and every player improved significantly. Great season Tigers!

Youth Girls Report Two games last weekend for the Tigerettes who hosted Glasshouse/Nth Shore on the back oval in both the under 13 and 15 grades. First it was the under 13 girls who whilst missing four or five regulars put up a fantastic showing to secure their double chance for the finals and will now play Maroochydore Flyers for a spot in the grand final next week.

Kaiya hides was just outstanding the entire day controlling the back half of the ground like a quarter back whilst Kate Roberts, Piper Wood (six goals) and Poppy Tindal were all among the Tigers best.

Next it was the under 15 girls who came up against a team they had not beaten so far this year. Our girls played terrific team orientated footy to also shore up their double chance where they also play Maroochydore.

Keana Welsh was the clear standout of the match winning her own footy at will whilst usual suspects Emma Benjamin, Mia Woodburn, Teesha fox and Hannah Mckenzie all prime movers in the win. No more games for our under 17 girls who missed out on finals after a pretty tough year numbers wise. A big thanks to the girls who put their hand up each week and also to Brett and Lisa Beauclerc for their ongoing help throughout the year.

INSIDE THE BUBBLE "There is really only one way to experience what I'm talking about," said Eve Persak, the charming and quite convincing nutrition manager of the Como Shambhala Retreats group. "You need to visit the Estate and enjoy a dinner where nutritious meets delicious. You'll love it up there. It's not real life, it's a bubble."

Ms Persak, a sporty gal from Chicago via Malibu, basically had me at hello, despite my innate prejudice against the spa culture that has taken over the travel supplements in recent years, and against what has become known as spa cuisine, indicating that every mouthful is packed with goodness, and preferably not accompanied by wine. I decided to bravely go where no food cretin had gone before, to the sumptuous Como Shambhala Estate near Ubud, Bali, the flagship of the Como Group.

The Como Shambhala concept is the brainchild of Singapore-based hotelier Christina Ong, who opened the first such retreat in the Turks and Caicos in 2000.

The Estate in Bali, spread over nearly 10 hectares of clifftop land high above the Ayung River, followed in 2005 and there are now eight retreats around the world, as well as five "urban escape sanctuaries".

At its core the Shambhala (which means place of tranquility in Sanskrit) ethos is a combination of health spa and luxury resort, where guests are offered a variety of health, wellness and healing options over a minimum three-day stay. The idea is to make you hit the reset button, and take the concepts home with you. The cuisine, which is basically the food Ms Ong likes to eat herself, refined by a dozen executive chefs and nutritionist Eve, is where the wellness philosophy meets the luxe. And it must work - Ms Ong is 70 going on 40.

The bubble effect hit us immediately we entered the magic kingdom's stone walls.

Apart from the occasional screams of whitewater rafters from the river far below, we seemed to have been instantly transported into a timeless, stylishly understated space that reminded me of Australian architect Peter Muller's first generation Bali Oberoi all those years ago. The main buildings and the accommodations all seemed to blend perfectly into the green environment, with mossy stone benches and water features dotted around and rice fields and cliffs forming the perfect backdrop.

an "architectural exercise in simplicity, combining the simple lines of Balinese tradition with details from colonial Java", according to an info sheet I found in a bamboo folder. To which I could only add, bloody beautiful. You could feel the serenity, to quote that other well-known Bali-ophile, Michael Caton. Our private pool offered a relaxing paddy-scape view, filtered by palm fronds ruffled by the cooling breeze.

A deck chair and a good book had my name on it for the rest of the afternoon, but we were there to eat ourselves well, so we scrubbed up at sunset and made our way to the meaningfully lower-case glow restaurant, at which the Shambhala cuisine was offered.

I preferred the classic traditional decor of the neighbouring Kudus House local-style restaurant, but the delights of that would have to wait until breakfast.

The Shambhala cuisine offered at The Estate is largely the creation of Australian chef Dan Moran, who is based at head office in Singapore where he works closely with Ms Ong. It adheres to the philosophy behind living or raw food diets, but Eve Persak and Chef Dan have also developed a concept they call "playing in the negative space", by which they mean making traditionally bad foods good, so that guests can feel like they are on holiday rather than in hospital. The classic example of this is the world's healthiest hamburger, which was still in development last week since Eve rejected it first time because it looked "too healthy".

So no burger but plenty to broaden my vision of how to eat healthy. We started with green lentil croquettes with watercress and kefir, and a platter of spicy raw tuna, soybean and flaxseed tacos, with avocado

and papaya salsa. Washed down with a glass of local blended rose, delicious. (Yes, there is an extensive wine list but you have to ask for it, and there is no bar.)

For mains we shared a barley risotto with Portobello mushrooms, fern tips, parmesan and parsley, and a show-stopping rosemary roast lamb with tomatoes, artichokes, green beans and mint and olive tapenade.

Sensational! And to round out the evening, a shared flour and dairy free chocolate coconut cake with coconut sorbet.

I woke at dawn and took the 300 steps down into the ravine to the sacred spring and the spring pools just above the roaring river. In the misty morning light it was quite beautiful, and I swam alone in the cool, clear water, taking it all in.

I felt great, goddammit! Must have been the rose. ●

NOOSA RIVER HAS BEEN FIRING! With the breezes up and morning low tides getting across the bar was a little difficult.

Starting at Sunshine Reef there has been a good mixed bag including squire, maori cod, sweetlip, pearlies and coral trout.

Fishing the slow sinking floater method seem to be the most productive with plenty of fish taken as the bait makes its way through the water column. North Reef and Chardon's reef have produced snapper, pearlies, moses perch, sweetlip, and tuna.

Micro Jigs have again proved there worth with plenty of quality fish bagged using this method. Some anglers also did the run out to the Barwon Banks and up towards Double Island with reports of long tail tuna, schools of tuna are small and moving fast so you may only get one or two casts into them. Off the bottom there is a great mixed bag including red emperor, good size pearlies, snapper, sweet lip, cod and jew.

The Noosa River has seen plenty of quality bream being caught throughout the

system. The river mouth has been producing some nice fish to 35cm on mullet strips, mullet gut and fowl gut. Smaller soft plastics on lightly weighted jig heads have also been of the lures of choice, cast around pylon and pontoons and left to sink slowly, with the bigger fish picking them up on the drop. Flathead have also been plentiful with a lot of good sized flathead being caught from the lakes all the way down to the river mouth. Soft plastic in prawn profiles have been working well, trolling hard body lures is another effective method and a great way cover a lot of ground. Good sized golden, diamond and giant trevally along with tailor have been taken at Woods Bays and the Noosa Sound early morning and late afternoon. Surface lures are the way to go.

There have been plenty of school sized jew in the upper reaches of the river with live baits doing most of the damage! Whiting are still in good numbers with Gympie Terrace, The Dog Beach and the Frying Pan the pick of

the spots. Live worms, yabbies and peeled prawns have been the perfect baits.

The beaches have been a little tough with this constant offshore breeze flattering out conditions leaving little white water for the fish to hide under. The trip up to Noosa's North Shore was worthwhile with some good catches of chopper tailor reported, along with the tailor there were some nice bream, flathead, whiting and bigger dart.

Most angler are bait fishing with pillies, mullet strips, and salted bonito.

In Lake McDonald and Lake Borumba: Surface walkers and frog profile walker cast into the shallows during early morning and late afternoon have been good for bass and saratoga. Small paddle tail plastics and vibes worked along bubble trail and deeper drop offs have been successful during colder weather. The bass bite will start to slow as the water cools so persistent will be the key.

Noosa Eagles players were all excited to celebrate the last game of the season on home grounds.

U7 Gold finished with a great win against Nambour 6-2.

It was wonderful watching the kids work as a team as they passed the ball to each other all the way to the goals.

Good defence was shown from Cooper, Sienna, Emily, Cruiz and Zach, who tackled the ball from the opposing team continuously.

The U8 Noosa Gold team finished up the season with a stellar game against the Unity Pythons this week.

Spectators were kept on the edge of their seats as the Noosa boys defended strongly and played with attack and determination.

Congratulations to Phoenix who booted the ball over the goalies head, off the goal post and into the net during the first half what an epic shot!

Well done also to Kyro for sliding another awesome goal in for our team.

In wrap-up for the season coach Cam, assistant coach Paul and team manager Deb would like to acknowledge all of the U8 Gold team for such a wonderful season.

The Noosa boys always played respectfully, in fairness and with brilliant camaraderie.

Congratulations Charlie, Ryan C, Max, Byron, Phoenix, Nate, Zain, Kyro, Xavier and Ryan A! A nail-biting game for U10 Black as defence worked extra hard on the field against Unity.

Both teams played well but it was Noosa who took out the win 4-2.

Fantastic job in goals Iggy, who had some amazing stops. ●

The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club has enjoyed a fantastic 2018 season.

All four of the club's teams have fielded competitive outfits which have enjoyed great success in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union Saturday competition this year.

Numbers are up and the club looks forward to even better things in 2019.

A lot of the credit for the success of the club's teams this year must go to the dedicated group of coaches and managers who have prepared all players week in, week out.

They have given their time to ensure that the kids have improved their game skills but

also their teamwork and social skills.

All of our teams are recognised by the other clubs in the SCJUR as being skilfull, respectful and possessing attributes aligned with the Spirit of Rugby.
