David and Julia Graham are back home in Emerald after spending the last three months volunteering their time with the international medical charity Mercy Ships.

The medical charity uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care services, capacity building and sustainable development aid to those without access in the developing world.

The pair spent several months on board the world’s largest civilian hospital ship and travelled to southern Africa for a sightseeing tour, before joining The Africa Mercy in Cameroon to serve as dining room assistants.

Their role on board was an important one, but Ms Graham conceded that they were a “very small cog in a big wheel”.

“Although we only spent one week in Cameroon before we sailed, it gave us a glimpse of life in West Africa," she said.

“We were serving the servers, in providing meals and a pleasant and clean environment where the other crew could meet and share a meal.

“We served behind the scenes in an area which is not high profile, but important nonetheless.

"The crew needs to be well-fed and wellnourished, so they can do their work.”

In August last year, The Africa Mercy provided almost 3000 life-changing surgeries on board.

Crews also treated more than 20,000 people at a land-based dental clinic and provided health care training to local medical professionals during its 10 months at port.

Ms Graham said that although daunting, the voyage was an eye-opening experience.

“It is still important to have adventures at our age,” she said.

“We have seen Africa for the first time.

"We have been challenged in many ways.

"We have seen the wonderful works of God in the surgical repairs done for the poor on the ship through the loving volunteers.

The editor’s desk We're still rugging up against the icy winter chill, but the fire season warnings have started.

They're something we've come to expect, though perhaps not quite this far out from summer.

It seems to be a variation on the same warning each year: this could be the worst fire season on record/in a decade/ this century.

Experts warn us to clear our properties, to check our fire plans, to prepare to leave our homes behind on high fire danger days.

I fear that it's all starting to feel like The Boy Who Cried Wolf. I fear this is breeding complacency.

The firefighters in the region share this fear.

I've spoken to several in recent weeks who are genuinely worried about the fire season ahead.

They say the figures and forecasts for the summer months have shaken even the most experienced firies.

They're shocked with how dry the bush is already - and it's still winter.

The 10th anniversary of the deadly Black Saturday Bushfires is looming, but the devastation is still fresh in many people's minds.

We need to heed the fire warnings - no matter how many times we've heard them before.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington bluntly told ABC Melbourne that firefighters could not get to everybody's homes.

"We can almost guarantee you right now we will lose property in Victoria," he said.

"But we hope we don't lose life.

"People need to plan.

"Whether you put it in writing or you just start talking about it as a family, let's start having the conversations."

Garden centre going

By Casey Neill Emerald's garden centre is closing its doors to make way for the SES. Emerald and District Co-operative Society will close the Mitre10 Garden Centre's doors for the final time at 5pm on Friday 31 August, after the site owner sold the land.

But word is only just reaching some co-op members, less than a fortnight from the last trading day.

Rod Dugmore from Avonsleigh contacted the Mail after calling the centre to order gravel.

He said he was told that they didn't have any because they were closing.

"We've been shareholders for over 40 years," he said.

"There's been no negotiation or communication by the co-op directors about what's happening there.

"The whole thing is just an absolute outrage."

Mr Dugmore said he was "pretty angry about it".

"Clearly the co-op is not a co-op anymore," he said.

Another concerned member told the Mail that shareholders could have banded together

and tried to retain the Belgrave-Gembrook Road site had they been informed.

Emerald and District Co-operative Society CEO Len O'Donnell said there'd been a large notice board on the footpath bearing the closure date for the past month, and all co-op businesses had been distributing at letter from the board outlining the closure.

"We didn't finalise a closure date until late July," he said.

Mr O'Donnell said the co-op was actively involved with the expressions of interest in the site, and prior to that had made an offer to buy the land.

"We put our best foot forward, with an offer over and above our valuation received by a registered valuer," he said.

"We did our very best, always considering the best outcome for our members and community.

"The board were extremely investigative in all matters pertaining to the potential sale of property.

"We feel we've done everything in a proper manner.

"It's a commercial reality. We were out-bid."

Mr O'Donnell said the garden centre was

important to the community.

"We acknowledge the importance of the SES to our region and supportive of a new permanent purpose built facility to assist them to continue greater service to our community," he said.

"However, it's unfortunate that there is insufficient land available to develop this type of facility elsewhere and came at the co-operative's expense.

"We have to move forward.

"We have to be more objective about what and where and how."

He said there was no available land in the area that the garden centre could relocate to due to green wedge and rural conservation zones.

"However, we are always open to all possibilities," he said.

The Mail reported in March that the State Government would spend $1.8 million to build the new SES headquarters, with construction to finish by mid next year.

The tin shed on the Old Gembrook Road site the Emerald SES has called home for 35 years has long been inadequate, but the site's topography made it impossible to build a larger unit there.

Body located Police found the body of missing man Troy Robinson in the Dandenong Ranges National Park about 10am on Saturday 18 August.

The 40-year-old was last seen on 15 August after leaving his Seaford home.

The exact cause of his death is yet to be established, but police report that it is not being treated as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Olinda man arrested Police arrested a 27-year-old Olinda man after allegedly finding drugs in his vehicle during a routine intercept in Croydon on Sunday 19 August.

Officers came across the vehicle in a hotel car park on Dorset Road about 10.30pm.

A search of the car allegedly uncovered drugs believed to be ice and GHB, and drug paraphernalia, including an ice pipe.

Police allegedly also found a knife within the vehicle.

They arrested the driver, a 27-year-old man from Olinda, at the scene and charged him with possessing methylamphetamine, GHB and a prohibited weapon.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 29 January next year.

Ferny Creek playground Thieves stole a basket swing from a children’s playground at the Ferny Creek Reserve on the weekend of 11 August.

Spared from floods Yarra Ranges SES units were spared the flooding flagged in a flood watch alert issued by VICSES on Friday night, but high wind gusts put Emerald and Healesville out in the cold for tree removals on Sunday, 19 August.

Healesville SES volunteers were called to clear a tree which had fallen causing some building damage and bringing down a power line on Myers Creek Road.

Emerald SES volunteers cleared a tree from Monbulk-Emerald Road at Monbulk and helped the CFA after the small of gas was detected where a tree had fallen on a house in Kilvington Drive in Emerald.

Learning magnified by Rotary efforts

By Casey Neill Monbulk students can take a closer look at the world around them thanks to local Rotarians.

The Rotary Club of Monbulk and District presented Monbulk Primary School with a class set of 31 magnifying microscopes.

They'll support the school's science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) program.

Club secretary Helen Riethof said the donation was part of the Microscopes in Schools

project, which Western Australia's Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay co-ordinated.

"This project provides primary schools with small hand-held microscopes that are easily moved to view items indoors or out," she said.

"There are now some 21,000 units in over 700 schools sponsored by around 120 Rotary Clubs in all states of Australia, plus neighbouring Asian and Pacific countries."

Monbulk Primary principal Lynn Ordish said the school was looking to invest in a STEAM teacher next year.

"Those microscopes are a really good kickstart for us because it's going to really promote that science and inquiry-type thinking that goes around the whole STEAM philosophy," she said.

"We're just so grateful that the community is so well-invested in our kids.

Police seized $250,000 worth of drugs along with weapons and cash following an investigation into alleged drug and firearm trafficking within Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit (DTU) detectives executed search warrants at four addresses across Mooroolbark, Croydon North, Croydon and Boronia on 16 August.

Police allegedly seized a large quantity of drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and cannabis, as well as precursor chemicals, firearms and cash.

They charged a Croydon man, 73, and a 43-year-old Croydon woman with cultivating and possessing a drug of dependence and handling proceeds of crime.

They were bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 10 September.

Don’t succumb to blues We've experienced a lot of very cold weather this winter and I have found myself constantly seeking the shelter of the indoors and the warmth of the nearest heater.

I don't really enjoy grey, gloomy days.

How much better I feel when I wake to a beautiful, sunny winter's day.

Even though the air is cold, a sunny day tempts me to get outside.

The importance of getting enough sunlight during the winter months cannot be overstated.

Exercising when it's cold creates quite a challenge for me.

It's so much easier, and warmer, to curl up on my couch with a cuppa and a good book.

However, I won't allow the cold to sink into

my bones so I make the effort to go for a walk and I feel so much better when I do.

A walk in the crisp winter's air blows the cobwebs out, clears the mind and gets everything moving.

Maintaining a healthy eating regime is something I find more difficult to do when it's cold outside. Somehow, a salad doesn't seem

to be quite as appetising as a plate of comforting carbs or sweet foods.

My food challenge in winter is to only have the occasional indulgence.

Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables gives me more energy and lifts my mood.

Keeping up social interaction also helps me fight the urge to hibernate in winter.

Often the last thing I feel like doing is leaving my warm, cosy home to venture out on those cold, windy or rainy days.

Staying in regular touch with the people I care about and accepting as many invitations to social events as time allows, boosts my mood and makes me feel good.

There's also the thought that, rather than trying to avoid the cold, embrace it instead! I

love a rugged-up walk along the beach in winter, breathing in the salty air and enjoying the soothing rhythm of the waves.

Our snow fields are close enough for a day visit. If you don't ski, there's always tobogganing, building a snowman or making snow angels. There's something magical about a snowcovered countryside.

Frolicking in the snow like a child is a must at least once in your life time - just don't forget to take a change of clothes for the trip home!

With signs of spring everywhere, the wattle in bloom, daffodils and blossom beginning to appear, all too soon we will be complaining about the heat!

Burning confusion

The council's social and economic development director, Ali Wastie, said the council received 12 requests for rangers to attend burn-offs across the municipality during business hours.

Three of those were complaints regarding burning off in an urban area, where burning off was prohibited.

Ms Wastie said a community safety officer attended the properties and made contact with residents to resolve the issues.

"One of these residents was using a fire pit for personal warmth," she said.

"The other properties were sent warning letters as an initial response."

On Sunday 12 August, five calls were made to the council's after-hours officer regarding burning off.

"Two of these calls required a response from the officer," she said.

"We aim to work with our residents, through education, conversations and warnings where appropriate, to help build understanding about the Open Air Burning Local Law, rather than rely solely on infringements."

Residents should visit yarraranges.vic.gov. au/burningoff or call 1300 368 333 with any questions.

Put on your beanie and start your bushfire preparations - the season is set to arrive early.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said the state's landscape was already dry.

"If we don't get good rain, the conditions will be a problem over summer," he said.

But Mr Warrington said Bureau of Meteorology climate outlooks indicated warmer and drier conditions, which would make alreadydry bushland even worse.

He said early indications suggested a moderate chance that Victoria would experience El Nino conditions in early summer and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

Put simply, this points to below average rainfall and higher than average temperatures.

"Our fire managers and fire behaviour analysts will be closely monitoring landscape dryness over coming months, which will be an important factor when considering upgrading or downgrading risk messaging depending on rainfall," he said.

Mr Warrington said fire season preparations would start earlier than usual, and the season would likely run later than normal.

"Over coming months we'll be formally engaging with regions, districts and brigades, but it is important we all start to focus now on preparing for the season ahead," he said.

Locally, Wandin Fire Brigade urged residents to visit the station any Sunday morning to talk about preparing for the bushfire season.

Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade said to "start preparing your properties, and dust off your fire plan and review it with your household".

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been conducting planned burns in the region in recent weeks.

Firefighters are explaining new burning off laws to Yarra Ranges residents getting it wrong.

The council finalised the Open Air Burning Local Law on 24 July and placed notices in local newspapers on 7 August.

The Yarra Ranges Council website has been updated with fact sheets detailing the legal requirements regarding burning off in the shire's three areas - urban, bushland and rural.

But Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade community safety co-ordinator Luke Roy said he was surprised and concerned that many residents were doing the wrong thing.

"It's great to know that people are getting rid of vegetation fuels before what could be a very challenging summer," he said.

"We just don't want residents getting in trouble by the local ranger, or having our volunteer firefighters called out unnecessarily."

Mr Roy said one key addition was that residents were required to register their burn with ESTA on 1800 668 511 - or risk receiving a fine.

"It's important they know because we want properties tidied up and excess vegetation fuel gone before the fire danger period arrives," he said.

"Once CFA's fire restrictions are in force, there is no open air burning for fuel reduction purposes.

"Based on the global events occurring it could be one hot and early fire season."

Mr Roy said open air burning on Sundays hadn't been supported in bushland areas in the Yarra Ranges for at least 10 years.

"Yet driving around you can spot plenty of back yards with piles burning, some even last Sunday when there was a severe wind weather warning across most of the state," he said.

"People really need to know the rules, consider the risks, and consider the community."

A teacher of teachers

By Derek Schlennstedt Retired Ferny Creek Primary School principal Matthew Coyle is celebrating four decades in teaching. The passionate educator began his career in Doveton 40 years ago and has since become an enduring member of the hills community.

Reflecting on his time as a graduate teacher at Doveton Primary School, Mr Coyle said he quickly became fond of teaching. “In those days you had a mentor teacher who looked after you very closely,” he said.

“I remember my mentor said to me that if I survived three to five years I’d be a great teacher and I absolutely loved it. “I learnt there that once you got children on side they’d walk over broken glass for you, and that if you pushed at them rather than with them you’d never have a chance.”

Eventually Mr Coyle migrated towards the Dandenong Ranges and settled in Upwey, which 35 years later, he still calls home.

He said he was made to feel welcome within the hills community and relished the opportunity to work and live in the same area. “I moved to Upwey Primary, which was fantastic because I had a little baby,” he said. “I was about five years up here and then I moved to, I guess you’d call it a senior teacher, to Upper Ferntree Gully...eventually I got a role as a leading teacher at Tecoma.

“I’ve stayed in the hills which really suited me.

“Some teachers might not teach anywhere near where they work, but one of my passions was walking the dog up to the coffee shop on a Sunday morning and you’d see the kids you’d teach who would come up and say ’hi’...it is lovely to be part of the community.”

Since 2004 Mr Coyle had been principal at

Ferny Creek Primary School before retiring in June this year. He said he would remain in the community and looked forward to what the future held.

The school held a farewell assembly for him, with many previous students returning to say goodbye.

Speaking to the Mail he said the use of technology has been one of the greatest changes during his career. “To me it’s an engagement tool for the kids and it’s a teaching aid - it’s not the teacher,” he said.

“Quite often the kids in senior school will choose not to use the iPad because they know it’s not going to give them the best result - they might use PowerPoint or a big presentation on paper.

“It’s learning to choose the right technology which is really important.”

Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) will be extending opening hours on a trial basis from Saturday 1 September.

The trial will see all branches - including Emerald - open at 9am every weekday and remain open until 9pm on Thursdays.

The extended hours will allow the community to access their local library at different times of the day and provide a more consistent service across the whole region.

"Casey Cardinia Libraries welcome more than one million visitors every year and with this, things can get a little hectic at times," CEO Chris Buckingham said.

“By opening for longer we will make it easier for the whole community to access our services.

“The community have repeatedly told us through surveys and anecdotal feedback that they would like us to be open for longer.

“We believe the extra library time will enable parents to visit straight after morning school drop off, give local students another place to study and provide local businesses and job seekers better access to our resources."

CCL will provide additional free activities and programming on Thursday evenings to encourage people to use their local library outside normal hours.

The trial will run for six months, until the end of February next year, before a comprehensive review of community uptake.

CCL also has branches at Cranbourne, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park, Narre Warren and Pakenham.

A weekly mobile library service also visits sites throughout Cardinia Shire. Library membership is free and open to everyone.

Solar for building a brighter future

By Derek Schlennstedt Reach 4 Your Future Foundation and World Vision Australia have embarked on a solar lighting project that will benefit children who have no access to electricity.

Upwey South Primary School, together with Belgrave South Primary and Upwey High, are making that dream a possibility.

On Monday 6 August, at Upwey South Primary School, the Monbulk MP and Education Minister James Merlino joined World Vision chief advocate Tim Costello to launch the STEM for Social Action project.

The project involves students from schools in the hills community joining together to raise funds to buy solar lights to provide for students and communities in third-world countries.

The Solar Lighting Project aims to provide children from the Uganda Refugee Camp, Cook Islands, Fiji Islands and Solomon Islands with solar lanterns to help them with their school work and enhance their safety at night.

Mr Merlino opened the ceremony and spoke about his own father’s experience in connecting electricity in Italy in 1961 and how that despite advancements in "modern technology, work still needs to be completed globally to provide equity for all".

He also spoke of the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a key focus for local schools.

Upwey South Primary principal Damien Kitch spoke to the Mail about how the project gave a global focus to local learning.

He said students would learn about the physics of solar energy and electricity, as they

“This social action by local students will provide key health benefits with the reduced need for kerosene to cook food and provide light for communities in third-world countries,” Mr Kitch said.

“The conversation came up with our students about how kids in third-world countries can do their homework without power and what we can do about it.

“Samua Kerevia, a Fijian Australian Wallabies player and foundation ambassador came out and gave a talk to a small group of our students about the project, and the students immediately said ‘yep we want to get involved'.”

Mr Kitch described the program as a great collaborative effort between all the schools.

“It’s a really good opportunity for all the schools to come together for a genuine good program - it’s the right thing to do," he said.

A Belgrave artist is one of five winners in a world-wide art contest.

Kea Tokley-Higgs was chosen from a pool of more than 3800 entries as a Wacom Authorised Training Centres (WATCs) winner.

She said it was a step forward in her journey of becoming a professional illustrator.

“This illustration is for the EP cover of a local band, Turn South," she said.

“Some of the songs explore how people can often feel isolated living in remote towns and I enjoyed trying to reflect these feelings in the composition.”

WATCs develop and nurture creativity and imagination within schools, colleges and universities across Australia and New Zealand.

Wacom awarded all five winners with a Wacom MobileStudio Pro valued at $3499, and their individual schools will receive a Wacom Cintiq Pro Touch, also valued at $3499.

Throughout August to November, the winners' artwork will be on display at The Next Level exhibitions in Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney alongside renowned artists from across the globe.

Sensory garden unveiled

By Derek Schlennstedt Emerald Secondary College students unveiled their unique sensory garden on Thursday 16 August, which has been built to help fellow peers with learning difficulties.

With the help of artist Jane Bennetts and a State Government and Creative Learning grant, Year 10 and 12 VCAL students used recycled metal to create artwork that students could touch, smell, hear and see.

The garden, aptly located near the school’s inclusion centre, features a range of interactive artworks which focus on the five human senses.

Speaking at the opening, Year 10 VCAL student Will Doran described the project as "awesome".

“It’s wonderful to see so many people here,” he said.

“It has just been a great experience to be able to come out here and get hands-on experience.

“Being able to come out and shovel dirt, do welding and grinding and using our minds to make these amazing sculptures - it’s just been an awesome process.”

The sculptures have all been designed by the students and were made out of 100 per cent recycled products.

Designed with the purpose of stimulating the senses, each sculpture is unique in its use of materials to engage sight, smell, touch, taste and sound.

Sensory gardens are popular with and beneficial to adolescents, especially those who have sensory processing issues, including autism and other disabilities Welding artist Janet Bennetts said the students had shown intiative and creativity when designing the sculptures.

Meetings make a move The next Yarra Ranges Council meeting will take place at Japara House in Kilsyth, instead of the Lilydale council chambers.

All the shortlisted projects have building a stronger community at heart, and the backing of a local organisation, community group, school, local council, or other eligible group able to help deliver it.

Projects pitched across the Yarra Ranges include sporting and recreation infrastructure, community arts projects, improvements to community facilities and local environment.

Yellingbo plan for viewing

By Kath Gannaway The Yellingbo Conservation Area Draft 10 Year Plan is open for comment.

The plan, approved by the Yellingbo Conservation Area (YCA) Coordinating Committee has been released for public comment with a closing date for submissions of Sunday, 7 October.

It can be viewed and downloaded from: www.engage.vic.gov.au .

The YCA has been a highly and hotly contentious issue over the past two years when affected land-owners in the Upper Yarra region were advised of proposed changes to crown land water frontage licences and leases.

The inclusion of Haining Farm in the YCA

also raised concerns and a number of volatile public meetings have struggled to resolve many of the issues.

Some of those issues, bushfire risk, access for recreation, weed and pest control, future funding and numerous others are raised in the draft document which was prepared by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) for the Yellingbo Conservation Area Coordinating Committee (YCACC).

DELWP and YCACC are jointly hosting community drop-in sessions on the more than 100 page, 10 year draft at Healesville, Yarra Junction and Monbulk for individuals, community organisations, groups and agencies.

The Conservation Area is made up of ap-

proximately 3,000 hectares of public land reserves and Crown water frontages extending from Healesville in the north to Millgrove and Hoddles Creek in the east, Emerald and Cockatoo in the south, and the southern Dandenong ranges in the south-west.

Among the list of 21 public lands included are nature conservation reserves, bushland areas and streamside reserves at Yellingbo and Warramate Hills, Sassafras and Kallista, Beenak, Healesville and Haining Farm at Don Valley.

The draft indicates that changing the name from 'Yellingbo Conservation Area' to more accurately reflect the scope of the Conservation Area would be considered in the future following community feedback on the name.

A series of consultation questions are included throughout this plan. Answers can be submitted through the Engage Victoria website or via a paper copy of the survey which is available at https://engage.vic.gov.au/yellingboconservationarea .

Re-shaping young minds with the words

By Kyra Gillespie Author Jessica Sanders is on track to take her first step into the publishing world, launching a crowdfunding campaign to get her upcoming children’s book onto store shelves.

The 25-year-old grew up in Macclesfield on her family’s acreage property with sisters Rebekah and Isabelle, and parents Jayneen and Mark.

She attended Macclesfield Primary School with her siblings and later Beaconhills College Pakenham where she completed her VCE. She has since shifted closer to the city, earn-

ing her Masters in Social Work at RMIT University.

Her upcoming children’s book, ‘Learning To Love Your Body’, is an empowering guide for girls to support positive body image.

The mission of the book is to show and celebrate diverse bodies, normalise natural bodily imperfections and to teach girls to view their bodies as more than just objects.

Aimed for young girls around the ages of 8-12, the book is a foundation guide based in preventative education.

“I believe in preventative education, espe-

cially in this day and age of social media,” Jess said.

The Kickstarter funds will go towards Reshape, a social enterprise Jess founded back in 2017 dedicated to empowering women and girls to develop positive relationships with themselves and their bodies.

Sheppard tour rolls on in

By Casey Neill Sheppard is bringing a fun, energy-filled show to Mount Evelyn.

The Brisbane-based band will play the York on Lilydale on Saturday 6 October as part of their Watching the Sky tour.

“This will be my inaugural trip. I’m very excited about it,” George Sheppard told the Mail.

“There’s a couple of places in Australia that I’ve never been.”

He’s not sure he’ll get much time to explore the area though. “Usually 90 per cent of the time it’s quickly in and out,” he said.

“We got to visit Paris - for two hours. We saw the Eiffel tower through the window of van.”

Joining George in the band are siblings Amy and Emma Sheppard, Jay Bovino, Michael Butler and Dean Gordon.

“This particular album we’ve tried to build from the ground up to be a live show,” George said. “We learnt a lot of lessons from Bombs Away about what works for a crowd.”

That means “soaring guitars” and “epic synths”. “I think part of our strong suit is our live show,” he said.

“That’s really where we make our fans.”

Sheppard are best known for the catchy Geronimo. “As much as we love Geronimo I don’t feel like it’s our best song,” George said.

“It’s definitely the biggest song that we’ve had.”

He hopes fans will come along and end up singing along to plenty of other tunes.

“There’s just something about a Sheppard show,” he said.

“We don’t sit there and go ‘we need to have fun here’.

“We just really enjoy our job.

“We put everything we have into it energywise and the audience feeds off it.”

Opening for Sheppard will be acoustic guitarist and singer Jacob Lee, who George said had insightful lyrics.

Sheppard is coming to Mount Evelyn.

Almost awesome Kevin Bloody Wilson Aussie comedian Kevin Bloody Wilson is bringing his tongue-in-cheek politically incorrect tour to the York on Lilydale.

He will continue to help "prevent global boring", as he described it.

As one of few funny-men who totally embody the spirit of Australian humour, Kev is revered around the globe for his Aussie larrikin take on life.

The aptly named tour Almost Awesome will see him traverse his extensive back catalogue, performing fan favourites like DILLIGAF, Dick’taphone, I Knew the Bride (When She Used to be a Mole) and Living Next Door

Speaking to the Mail, Kev said audiences could expect anything to happen.

“There will be lots of full-frontal nudity from me,” he joked.

“The show revolves on its own axis, I never know night from night what is going in the show.

“A lot of ad-lib goes in, it depends what is happening in the world between now and then.”

Platypus Festival makes quite a splash Southern Dandenongs Landcare is partnering with Yarra Ranges Council to bring the annual Platypus Festival back to Belgrave Lake Park.

The Platypus Festival is a family event celebrating the platypus that live in Monbulk Creek and aims to educate the community about ways to protect them.

Festival-goers can expect a fun-filled day from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 9 September with music, a Dreamtime interactive performance and a sausage sizzle.

Information stalls will be set up throughout the day from Southern Dandenongs Landcare, Melbourne Water, Environmental Educations for Kids, Platypus Education Group and more.

With support from the council’s bushland team, the festival will also host a community planting event along the creek where anyone is welcome to help to revegetate the area to make the water healthier for platypus.

Councillor Mike Clarke said he was looking forward to the festival, which was supported by the council’s Grants for Community.

He said there was no better time to celebrate the platypus.

Blackkklansman is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), a rookie black police investigator who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan by posing as a white initiate over the phone.

While the plot is straightforward and surprisingly sedate, the film still generates heavy tension through its nuanced characters and their internal struggles.

Washington has a noble, charismatic presence as Stallworth, while Adam Driver is more subdued and guarded as white colleague Flip Zimmerman, who must pose as Stallworth during face-to-face meetings with the Klan.

Playing out amid the US civil rights movement, Blackkklansman soberly addresses the anger and fear on both 'sides' of the racial conflict, and considers whether Stallworth and Zimmerman are both adapting to oppressive systems.

Stallworth, a police officer, joined an institution that contributes to black oppression, and Zimmerman, while undercover, must hide his Jewish identity and fit in with the Klan's vicious company. The film conjures subtle irony from how they're undermining one oppressive group but supporting another.

Blackkklansman feels almost satirical, with a black cop and a Jewish cop consistently and hilariously fooling the Klan, but the film still unflinchingly addresses the Klan's hateful ideology.

A brilliant climactic montage juxtaposes a Klan gathering with an activist soberly recounting the true 1916 lynching of disabled black man Jesse Washington, which director Spike Lee frames as a rebuttal of the Klan's rhetoric.

Healesville and Mount Evelyn are fighting it out for that all important fifth spot but Monbulk still have an outside chance of knocking either one of them out.

With one round to go in Division Two, Seville will be minor premiers, Yarra Glen will finish second, Yarra Junction is safe in third, Gembrook has booked fourth spot, and fifth is still up for grabs between Alexandra and Powelltown - with Yea still a distant outsider.

In Division one A-grade netball, Olinda has taken back top spot but is only one game clear of Belgrave.

Third spot and that second chance is being contested between Wandin and Woori Yallock and that elusive fifth spot is still wide open, with the contenders being Monbulk, Warburton and Mount Evelyn.

In Division Two A-grade netball there’s one round to go and Yea and Kinglake are battling it out for the minor premiership, with Seville secure in third.

Yarra Junction is safe in fourth spot but Yarra Glen is just hanging onto fifth, with Powelltown only one win away in sixth on a lower percentage.
