Hay - here’s help

By Casey Neill Lilydale Rotarians and Gruyere farmers are helping drought-stricken farmers in Bairnsdale.

The Rotary Club of Lilydale received a $10,000 donation from the estate of a former Rotarian.

Member Lynn Whelan said that he was also a farmer, so the club thought it fitting that his generosity would support other farmers in need.

They sourced hay from Rob Bennett in Gruyere.

"We're farmers ourselves," Rob's wife Liz told the Mail.

"We have a property that's in drought and a property that's not in drought.

"We had to help."

She said it had been too cold and there hadn't been enough rain.

"The grass is just not growing," she said.

"We've bought water."

On Friday 17 August, two trucks rolled onto they property and were loaded with 78 bales of hay, including six donated by a Seville East farmer.

Ms Whelan had reached out to truck manufacturer Kenworth and sourced free transport through Grinter Transport Services and Willaton Transport Group.

Two drivers volunteered to make the fourhour, 300 kilometre journey free of charge.

Rotary Club of Lilydale president Ron Haines said he spoke to the Department of Agriculture.

"And they indicated the farmers in Bairnsdale were in drought and struggling," he said.

"We wanted to keep it in Victoria."

The National Farmers' Federation and the

Rotary Club of Bairnsdale will distribute the donation at the end of its journey.

Mr Haines said this would also include $6000 in grain and fuel vouchers.

"It's fantastic. We're pretty excited about it," he said.

"Every cent is going to farmers."

The Rotary Club of Lilydale meets every second Tuesday at 6.30pm at L'auberge in Lilydale.

The editor’s desk We're still rugging up against the icy winter chill, but the fire season warnings have started. They're something we've come to expect, though perhaps not quite this far out from summer.

It seems to be a variation on the same warning each year: this could be the worst fire season on record/in a decade/this century. Experts warn us to clear our properties, to check our fire plans, to prepare to leave our homes behind on high fire danger days.

I fear that it's all starting to feel like The Boy Who Cried Wolf. I fear this is breeding complacency.

The firefighters in the region share this fear.

I've spoken to several in recent weeks who are genuinely worried about the fire season ahead.

They say the figures and forecasts for the summer months have shaken even the most experienced firies.

They're shocked with how dry the bush is already - and it's still winter.

The 10th anniversary of the deadly Black Saturday Bushfires is looming, but the devastation is still fresh in many people's minds.

We need to heed the fire warnings - no matter how many times we've heard them before.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington bluntly told ABC Melbourne that firefighters could not get to everybody's homes.

"We can almost guarantee you right now - we will lose property in Victoria," he said.

"But we hope we don't lose life.

"People need to plan.

"Whether you put it in writing or you just start talking about it as a family, let's start having the conversations."

Bulk buy for solar

Police are seeking information in relation to a burglary in Yarra Glen.

Between 4.30pm on 11 August and 7.45am on 13 August, thieves forced entry into the Auto One mechanics workshop.

Police said they stole a 2013 Toyota Landcuriser with registration number 1AN1PD and a 2001 gold-coloured Ford Falcon with registration number RFN134.

Those steps include installing insulation, replacing old, inefficient appliances, and upgrading hot water services to heat pumps.

Mr Barlow said even where there is a cost involved, payback in terms of reduced bills could occur relatively quickly.

"We're very excited by the opportunities the research has identified," he said.

"This is evidence-based research about what has worked in other places and can work in Healesville.

"Many of the options are relatively cost neutral, can be enhanced by behaviour change and education, and can achieve payback relatively quickly through reduced bills."

He encouraged people to join CoRE to make net zero a reality.

"As more residents become involved, the more we can accelerate initiatives such as bulk buy programs, cost efficient insulation, and longer term strategies such as a Healesville mini-grid."

Sanctuary offers its ‘thanks for caring’

By Kath Gannaway Littlies from the Bunjil Room at Robyn Jane Day Care in Healesville were full of questions when they had a visit from Healeville Sanctuary's Milli the Boobook Owl recently.

Keepers Falk Wicker and James Goodridge from the Sanctuary's Spirits of the Sky team visited as a 'thank you' to the children who sent a care package to the team following the death in July of the Sanctuary's famous and much-loved Wedge-tailed eagle, Jess.

Once buying the team a puppy had been ruled out, a compromise was reached and with love in their little hearts they baked cookies instead.

"We're here to say 'thank you' for your cookies and your letter," Falk said adding that the cookies were 'very delicious'.

Almost as delicious as the morsels of mice that Milli took great delight in devouring to the mixed delight and dismay of the kids.

James fielded some tricky questions including "Aren't owls nocturnal?" (sub-text shouldn't Milli be in bed by now?), why does Milli get scared if there is loud noise (sub-text - why do we have to be quiet?) and "Do owls make a noise when they fly".

Milli is also a Spirits of the Sky regular and would have appeared in the same shows as Jess ... but, eagles being eagles, and owls being owls, not at the same time!

Yarra Glen mechanic broken into

Healesville Police are investigating a burglary at the Cellarbrations store in Healesville.

Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that three men smashed the store's front door just after 4am on Wednesday 15 August.

He said they stole cigarettes and alcohol and left the scene in a Toyota Landcruiser, which they had parked next to the entrance to the store, in the Coles car park.

The break-in came two weeks after the Healesville BP suffered a similar fate when it was broken into on 3 August.

Healesville IGA was also broken into a few weeks ago.

Sgt Thompson urged people to remain wary and to call triple-zero immediately if they saw anything suspicious in the community.

Spared from floods Yarra Ranges SES units were spared the flooding flagged in a flood watch alert issued by VICSES on Friday night, but high wind gusts put Emerald and Healesville out in the cold for tree removals on Sunday, 19 August.

Healesville SES volunteers were called to clear a tree which had fallen causing some building damage and bringing down a power line on Myers Creek Road.

Emerald SES volunteers cleared a tree from Monbulk-Emerald Road at Monbulk and helped the CFA after the small of gas was detected where a tree had fallen on a house in Kilvington Drive in Emerald.

Yarra Glen footballers had a staggering 347-point win over Thornton Eildon in the AFL Yarra Ranges Division Two competition.

The game was reportedly played in good spirits, despite the huge margin.

The Yarra Glen Football Netball Club side finished the match with 54 goals, 29 points, for a 353-point total.

Opponent Thornton Eildon managed just one goal for the game.

All 21 Yarra Glen players contributed goals for their side.

The final one got on the board right on the siren after Thornton Eildon deliberately gave away a 50-metre penalty to provide the opportunity.

All supporters and players cheered Thornton off the ground at the end of the game for the resilience they'd shown during the season.

A Monash University study has concluded that increasing Healesville's current 18% of solar households through a bulk buy is the most feasible first-step opportunity for reducing carbon emissions and moving towards greater uptake of renewable energy.

Healesville Community Renewable Energy (CoRE) worked with Monash to undertake an options study on how Healesville could transition to net zero emissions.

The report was prepared by final year environmental engineering students Luke Barry and Nicholas Seymour, supported by the Monash University Net Zero team, the Faculty of Engineering, Yarra Ranges Council and Healesville CoRE. CoRE chair Jeff Barlow said the primary focus was to consider options for emissions reduction by implementing energy efficient measures, access to cheaper renewable energy resources and approaches taken by other communities.

He said the bulk buy had proven to provide the necessary building blocks for achieving net-zero in other towns such as Uralla and Moreland where net zero strategies identify solar power as an opportunity and key action to reduce carbon emissions and help move toward renewable energy.

The Monash team did energy audits of three Healesville homes providing valuable data on energy use and thermal profiles of typical buildings.

Yellingbo plan is on table

By Kath Gannaway The Yellingbo Conservation Area Draft 10 Year Plan is open for comment.

The plan, approved by the Yellingbo Conservation Area (YCA) Coordinating Committee has been released for public comment with a closing date for submissions of Sunday, 7 October.

It can be viewed and downloaded from: www.engage.vic.gov.au .

The YCA has been a highly and hotly contentious issue over the past two years when affected land-owners in the Upper Yarra region were advised of proposed changes to crown land water frontage licences and leases.

The inclusion of Haining Farm in the YCA

also raised concerns and a number of volatile public meetings have struggled to resolve many of the issues.

Some of those issues, bushfire risk, access for recreation, weed and pest control, future funding and numerous others are raised in the draft document which was prepared by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) for the Yellingbo Conservation Area Coordinating Committee (YCACC).

DELWP and YCACC are jointly hosting community drop-in sessions on the more than 100 page, 10 year draft at Healesville, Yarra Junction and Monbulk for individuals, community organisations, groups and agencies.

The Conservation Area is made up of ap-

proximately 3,000 hectares of public land reserves and Crown water frontages extending from Healesville in the north to Millgrove and Hoddles Creek in the east, Emerald and Cockatoo in the south, and the southern Dandenong ranges in the south-west.

Among the list of 21 public lands included are nature conservation reserves, bushland areas and streamside reserves at Yellingbo and Warramate Hills, Sassafras and Kallista, Beenak, Healesville and Haining Farm at Don Valley.

The draft indicates that changing the name from 'Yellingbo Conservation Area' to more accurately reflect the scope of the Conservation Area would be considered in the future following community feedback on the name.

A series of consultation questions are included throughout this plan. Orchard sculpture is unique to Wandin The berry and fruit orchards of the Wandin district feature in a sculpture designed to reflect Wandin North's unique industries and environment.

The $30,000 sculpture by Yarra Glen artist Ernst Fries sits prominently at the Wandin North shopping centre on the Warburton Highway overlooking the hills and wineries.

The work, commissioned by Yarra Ranges Council to create a concept reflecting the simplicity, power and resonance of the bustling town area, is part of the Wandin North Streetscape Project which included consultation with the Wandin North Traders Group.

Mr Fries said the sculpture reflected Wandin North's natural environment, industries, community spirit and diversity.

"The berry and fruit orchards are shown in a colourful and joyous presentation of an overflowing abundance with a multitude of round,

coloured glass called Dalle de Verre, which will change in intensity of colour with the prevailing light and the direction of vision," he said.

"I created two shapes which lean forward, carrying the abundance of the local natural recourses.

"They intersect and support each other to reflect the community spirit.

"My intention was to highlight the close relationship and interaction of the main contributors to the community's livelihood."

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the artwork was commissioned following consultation with traders, community groups, residents and visitors regarding suggested improvements to the precinct.

"Public artwork, streetscape works, footpaths, connections to the rail trail, way-finding signage and references to the war memorial in Wandin East were identified as priorities," Cr Cox said.

"This sculpture reminds us of the beautiful

fruit orchards, berry farms and wineries which are some of the most outstanding agricultural activities taking place in Wandin North and its surrounds.

"Our community has expressed a desire to see an increase in quality arts and heritage activities in the public places where they live and this project has certainly delivered just that."

"Ernst Fries is a renowned local artist whose projects involve 3D skilled work," Ms Wastie said.

"You may have seen his steel work Wind Screen at City Walk in Civic, Canberra or The Victorian Coat of Arms at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court. This is a special piece of art that Wandin North can enjoy for years to come."

All the shortlisted projects have building a stronger community at heart, and the backing of a local organisation, community group, school, local council, or other eligible group able to help deliver it.

Projects pitched across the Yarra Ranges include sporting and recreation infrastructure, community arts projects, improve-

ments to community facilities and local environment.

Voting is open until 5pm on Monday 17 September at pickmyproject.vic.gov.au.

Open for public comment: Yellingbo Conservation Area Draft Plan

Lived Experience Advisory Committee The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation is looking for individuals from across Victoria who are willing to share their expertise as people who have experienced harm from their own gambling or through others, such as a family member.

The proposed Yellingbo Conservation Area Draft 10 Year Plan is now available for public comment through the Engage Victoria website. The Plan will provide the overall direction about how the public land in the conservation area will be used and managed in the future. There will be three community discussions hosted, and all are welcome to come and ask questions and have their say.

If this sounds like you, we would be pleased to hear from you.

For the first time the Foundation is establishing a Lived Experience Advisory Committee, chaired by a Foundation Board member, to assist in all aspects of our work and contribute to reducing gambling related harm.

Early fire season start

Burning confusion

By Casey Neill Firefighters are explaining new burning off laws to Yarra Ranges residents getting it wrong.

The council finalised the Open Air Burning Local Law on 24 July and placed notices in local newspapers on 7 August.

The Yarra Ranges Council website has been updated with fact sheets detailing the legal requirements regarding burning off in the shire's three areas - urban, bushland and rural.

But Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade community safety co-ordinator Luke Roy said he was surprised and concerned that many residents were doing the wrong thing.

"It's great to know that people are getting rid of vegetation fuels before what could be a very challenging summer," he said.

"We just don't want residents getting in trouble by the local ranger, or having our volunteer firefighters called out unnecessarily."

Mr Roy said one key addition was that residents were required to register their burn with ESTA on 1800 668 511 - or risk receiving a fine.

"It's important they know because we want properties tidied up and excess vegetation fuel gone before the fire danger period arrives," he said.

"Once CFA's fire restrictions are in force, there is no open air burning for fuel reduction purposes.

"Based on the global events occurring it could be one hot and early fire season."

Mr Roy said open air burning on Sundays hadn't been supported in bushland areas in the Yarra Ranges for at least 10 years.

back yards with piles burning, some even last Sunday when there was a severe wind weather warning across most of the state," he said.

"People really need to know the rules, consider the risks, and consider the community."

Mr Roy said he'd prefer neighbours talking to each other to change behaviour, rather than phoning council and residents getting fines.

The council's social and economic development director, Ali Wastie, said the council received 12 requests for rangers to attend burn-offs across the municipality during business hours.

Three of those were complaints regarding burning off in an urban area, where burning off was prohibited.

Ms Wastie said a community safety officer attended the properties and made contact with residents to resolve the issues.

"One of these residents was using a fire pit for personal warmth," she said.

"The other properties were sent warning letters as an initial response."

On Sunday 12 August, five calls were made to the council's after-hours officer regarding burning off.

"Two of these calls required a response from the officer," she said.

"We aim to work with our residents, through education, conversations and warnings where appropriate, to help build understanding about the Open Air Burning Local Law, rather than rely solely on infringements."

Residents should visit yarraranges.vic.gov. au/burningoff or call 1300 368 333 with any questions.

CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said the state's landscape was already dry.

"If we don't get good rain, the conditions will be a problem over summer," he said.

But Mr Warrington said Bureau of Meteorology climate outlooks indicated warmer and drier conditions, which would make already-dry bushland even worse. He said early indications suggested a moderate chance that Victoria would experience El Nino conditions in early summer and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Put simply, this points to below average rainfall and higher than average temperatures.

"Our fire managers and fire behaviour analysts will be closely monitoring landscape dry-

ness over coming months, which will be an important factor when considering upgrading or downgrading risk messaging depending on rainfall," he said. Mr Warrington said fire season preparations would start earlier than usual, and the season would likely run later than normal.

"Over coming months we'll be formally engaging with regions, districts and brigades, but it is important we all start to focus now on preparing for the season ahead," he said.

Locally, Wandin Fire Brigade urged residents to visit the station any Sunday morning to talk about preparing for the bushfire season.

Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade said to "start preparing your properties, and dust off your fire plan and review it with your household".

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been conducting planned burns in the region in recent weeks.

Blackkklansman is based on the true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), a rookie black police investigator who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan by posing as a white initiate over the phone.

While the plot is straightforward and surprisingly sedate, the film still generates heavy tension through its nuanced characters and their internal struggles.

Washington has a noble, charismatic presence as Stallworth, while Adam Driver is more subdued and guarded as white colleague Flip Zimmerman, who must pose as Stallworth during face-to-face meetings with the Klan.

Playing out amid the US civil rights movement, Blackkklansman soberly addresses the anger and fear on both 'sides' of the racial conflict, and considers whether Stallworth and Zimmerman are both adapting to oppressive systems.

Stallworth, a police officer, joined an institution that contributes to black oppression, and Zimmerman, while undercover, must hide his Jewish identity and fit in with the Klan's vicious company. The film conjures subtle irony from how they're undermining one oppressive group but supporting another.

Blackkklansman feels almost satirical, with a black cop and Jewish cop consistently and hilariously fooling the Klan, but the film still unflinchingly addresses the Klan's hateful ideology.

A brilliant climactic montage juxtaposes a Klan gathering with an activist soberly recounting the true 1916 lynching of disabled black man Jesse Washington, which director Spike Lee frames as a rebuttal of the Klan's rhetoric.

Blackkklansman is a funny yet deeply confronting exploration of racial conflict in America.

Leanne Woolley Hoddles Creek Primary School has a proud tradition of over 100 years of teaching and learning in the Yarra Valley and I am extremely pleased to be a part of this school. I began my teaching career at Hoddles Creek Primary back in 2002 and this year, I have been fortunate enough to take on the role of Principal. Scott Tully Principal After more than twenty years in both the secondary and primary school system, and as a principal in both, Scott Tully has spent the last three years as the Principal of Upper Yarra Secondary College.

Touched by the war

By Casey Neill Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans opened up about their service and post-war experiences for a new book - some for the first time.

Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer wrote Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans, launched at the sub-branch on Sunday 19 August.

"In the past I've interviewed veterans from different campaigns, basically from World War I through to the Gulf War," he said.

"As it was the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War we decided we would have a look at that and talk to residents of the Yarra Valley who had served in Vietnam.

"I was able to track down 16 veterans that I interviewed.

"Some of these were talking for the very first time about their experiences.

"These guys telling it in their own words will give people a better understanding of what Australians went through during that period."

Two served in the Navy and the others with the Army.

"One I interviewed who was in the Navy was on HMAS Hobart when that was attacked," he said.

"He was wounded in that attack.

"On that particular night, two navy fellows were killed in action on the Hobart."

Mr McAleer said Australia was involved in Vietnam from 1962 through to 1975, and his interviews covered 1964 to 1972.

"They were all very different experiences that they had because the nature of the war changed so much during that period," he said.

"All of them surprised me at some stage with what they had been through and what

"Vietnam has really been a bit of an unknown quantity because a lot of these fellows didn't talk about it and weren't encouraged to talk about it.

"We talked about what life was like for them before Vietnam, during their time in Vietnam, and after Vietnam.

"Some of them found it hard to readjust, some suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

"Some of them were abused and vilified by a lot of the anti-war movement people as well.

"They served their country and risked their lives to come back to be abused for doing that, from people they thought they were defending."

He said some of the interviews were quite confronting and emotional.

"They're an extraordinary group of men," he said.

"They've all been quite honest in what they went through."

Seville Primary School students excitedly unpacked the defibrillator they worked so hard to raise funds for.

Ava, with Chloe's enthusiastic help, applied to Wandin's Golden Opportunity Shop for funding while on junior school council last year.

They received $2000 to buy the automated external defibrillator (AED).

It's registered with Ambulance Victoria and is available to the wider community during school opening hours.

The school also recently hosted an animal day to raise funds for Coldstream Animal Aid. Students dressed-up, played animal games and held a parade - all run, planned and coordinated by the junior school council.

They raised $132 and handed the fund to Elle and Harvey the dog from Animal Aid.

Healesville and Mount Evelyn are fighting it out for that all important fifth spot but Monbulk still have an outside chance of knocking either one of them out.

With one round to go in Division Two, Seville will be minor premiers, Yarra Glen will finish second, Yarra Junction is safe in third, Gembrook has booked fourth spot, and fifth is still up for grabs between Alexandra and Powelltown - with Yea still a distant outsider.

In Division one A-grade netball, Olinda has taken back top spot but is only one game clear of Belgrave.

Third spot and that second chance is being contested between Wandin and Woori Yallock and that elusive fifth spot is still wide open, with the contenders being Monbulk, Warburton and Mount Evelyn.

In Division Two A-grade netball there’s one round to go and Yea and Kinglake are battling it out for the minor premiership, with Seville secure in third.

Yarra Junction is safe in fourth spot but Yarra Glen is just hanging onto fifth, with Powelltown only one win away in sixth on a lower percentage.

Maddie eyes Spain for big soccer trip

By Effie Caloutas Healesville Soccer Club player Maddie Campbell has been selected to train with the junior women’s futsal team in Spain next year.

The Elite 96 program identified the under-14 girls star for the honour on Sunday 4 August.

Maddie said she was excited and shocked at her selection.

She’s looking forward to improving herself as a player and meeting other players.

“He’s one of my favourite players in the world.”

TRIP: The firey’s story

By Kath Gannaway Deputy Group Officer Yarra Valley Group, Andrea Bigham, has been a CFA volunteer for 32 years.

CFA and SES volunteers are often first responders to car crashes and DGO Bigham's introduction to the fifth Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Woori Yallock on Wednesday, 1 August, was delivered with purpose and a plea.

TRIP is a combined response by Yarra Valley emergency services - CFA, SES, Police and Ambulance to the tragic loss of young lives on Yarra Ranges' roads. The target audience is 16 to 25 year-olds and their parents.

Ms Bigham addressed the staggering statistics of road death around the world, in Australia and in Yarra Ranges.

The statistics are war-like - 1.25 million people annually and serious injury and lifelong changes to millions of others.

World Health Organisation predicts that by 2030 road traffic injuries will be number five in the cause of death worldwide.

"That is frightening, but the most alarming fact of all is that today, the leading cause of death amongst our young people is road trauma," Ms Bigham said.

Locally she said that in 2017, 1225 people lost their lives on Australian roads, 258 in Victoria, the majority young males.

She said while most were drivers, others passengers, cyclists, pedestrians, also died as the result of car crashes on Victorian roads.

"Our shocking road toll and shocking road toll statistics are a direct reflection of our driving behaviour, and our driving behaviour is therefore shocking also," she said.

"That is evident in Shire of Yarra Ranges,"

"These traffic offences occurred on roads that you and your family travel on every day.

"These unsafe driving practices are putting all of us at risk and it's time for a change.

"If we look at leading causes of these traffic offences, people disobeying road signage 697, people distracted while driving - mobile phone, eating hamburger, drinking or even watching tv in a car 421, not using signals cor-

rectly or not driving to conditions, like tailgating, over 415," she said.

She said the number of registration and licence offences at 1443 was alarming - a combination of unroadworthy and unregistered cars and unlicensed drivers.

"They are sharing the same roads as you and your family. If you think that doesn't bother you, or doesn't matter, what if you're involved in crash with one of those people?"

Most alarming was speeding with 5236 fines handed out and that is only the ones where police have intervened and stopped dangerous driving.

"These dangerous driving practices are resulting in serious and horrific crashes that we in emergency services are attending, but more importantly, you as a family are losing loved ones and it's happening in own back yard," she said.

A list of crash locations in the five years from 2012 to 2017 showed 372 families and friends of people in the 18 to 25 age group had directly experienced the impact of road trauma in Yarra Ranges.

"But more tragically in the past three years, for every year we have lost three young lives," she said.

"One young life lost on our roads is unacceptable, three young lives lost every year ... ," she paused and invited people to look around them.

"Are the three young lives lost next year ... are they here in the room tonight?"

It was a sobering proposition which sadly may be answered too soon.

"How as a community can we accept these numbers," Ms Bigham asked.

"We need to make a change because road trauma statistics, they are preventable."
