By Luke Voogt Grovedale residents are set for a legal showdown over a childcare centre they have described as unsafe and unnecessary.

Nearby resident and grandfather John Raven was one of 35 objectors to the proposal before Geelong's council decided to deny a planning permit on 1 May. "It isn't suited to the area nor is it needed for the local community," the 73-year-old told the Indy.

"Local residents are outraged to think that (another) centre might be built in Pioneer Road Grovedale."

Residents will face the companies behind the proposal in Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on 17 September, following a preliminary hearing on 3 August.

VCAT stoush From page 1 Mr Raven described the proposed childcare centre on an already busy road as a recipe for disaster.

Another objector counted 1,265 vehicles on the road between 7.30am and 9am, and 1778 between 4.30pm and 6pm.

"Everybody in that area is retired or that sort of age," Mr Raven said.

"Pioneer Road residents already find it difficult to enter traffic when reversing from their driveways for fear of causing accidents."

On 25 July, a car ploughed into power pole and a residential property fence, closing the road and leaving 400 homes without power for almost half a day, Mr Raven said.

"There have been a number of accidents on the eastern end over the last eight months and Pioneer Road residents report hearing the screeching of brakes as near misses occur frequently."

Even young families in the area had objected to the proposal with nearby childcare centres at 40 to 70 per cent capacity, Mr Raven said "We've had feedback from some of the nearby day cares and on every website I've looked at they're advertising vacancies."

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos collected 700 signatures against the project recently and called for Planning Minister Richard Wynne to intervene.

Mr Katos said the petition was one of the largest he had seen for a project of this size.

"Even I was quite surprised at the number of people - 700 signatures is a pretty large amount no matter what it is.

"I'm happy to go into bat for that community."

The owner of the proposal site, ARR Property, and project architect Kalliopi Vakras declined to comment.

"As this project is at VCAT it is not appropriate for either party, including the objectors, to be commenting to the media," Ms Vakras said.

Crumbling corner takes life savings

By Gill Cooper Geelong couple Melinda Phillips and Angelo Fusella are among multiple business owners forced to pick up the pieces since Belcher's Corner building was shut down in July due to structural damage.

The local couple face a unique double whammy by operating two different businesses at the same site.

Together they invested their super fund and life savings into buying Angelo's small 25sqm office outright in December 2016, to base his tax agent and accountancy firm AFTAX in the city's centre.

Melinda was also leasing retail premises in the building for her skin clinic Invoque. She said that when evacuation orders were issued overnight, all access to her business files and expensive equipment, including newly delivered skin needling treatment gear was suddenly blocked.

"It's been devastating. I couldn't work at all for a month," Melinda said.

"I was forced to cancel all my clients' appointments at short notice and couldn't access any of my equipment or files until recently.

I have some incredible core clients who've been simply amazing with their support and even offering groceries but I have lost several clients for good and will now have to start up again."

Angelo estimates the couple has already clocked up $20,000 losses in operating costs and lost income so far, including "massive" relocation costs, with two lots of new bond and rental payments.

"There's been a very limited supply of other suitable premises and the pressure's now on me to grow my business quickly."

IN BRIEF Laneway links Council has endorsed its action plan to link laneways and properties to major shopping centres. The Laneways Action Plan identifies new laneways connections that will increase pedestrian access throughout central Geelong.

Possible new public laneways and links identified include Dennys Place to Malop Street, Ryrie Street to Market Street, Market Street to Little Myers Street and Aitchison Place laneway.

Tapping his networks including the Geelong Business Club and Geelong Chamber of Commerce members who shared their local knowledge and contacts, Angelo managed to secure temporary premises elsewhere.

He is hoping to lock in a more permanent solution.

Melinda has secured a new outlet in Gheringhap Street to start up again next week.

However she says the shop fit-out, signage, printing, and other marketing costs will hurt.

"We are now in recovery mode but as a family we also have school fees, birthdays and Christmas coming up," she said.

"We're both still in business but you can't make up for lost time."

So far there has been no financial assistance provided to owners after the enforced shutdown.

Angelo said he has made approaches to the Council via the Chamber about interest free loans available from local or state government in the circumstances but got a flat "no".

Mel has had a small win when the City agreed to waive a transfer fee for her health permit to new premises.

Council says it is "not in a position to provide direct funding to individual business owners" but is "working hard to ensure the support it provides is tailored to best meet their individual needs".

A meeting of the Body Corporate committee today is expected to discuss mounting costs including emergency services bills and the future of the Belcher's Corner building structure.

Healthy boost Deakin University has welcomed $8m in grants funds from the National Health and Medical Research Council to develop world-leading health research.

Two new research centres will advance healthy diets through food retail research and practice, as well develop new therapies for the most common psychiatric disorders.

Local veteran remembers war 50 years on

By Luke Voogt Corio veteran Frank Cunningham drove trucks that helped keep soldiers alive during a Vietnam War battle 50 years ago.

He helped supply vital stores, food and ammunition to infantrymen who fought in the Battle of Coral-Balmoral, which claimed 25 Australian lives.

"Sometimes you'd go out and talk to them, and the next time you didn't know if you'd talk to them again - they could be alive or dead," he said.

Mr Cunningham will join veterans from across Geelong at Queenscliff on Saturday, for the Vietnam Veterans Day march stepping off at 10.30am.

This year veterans will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle, which took place between 12 May and 6 June, 1968.

"We've gotta stick together and give each other support," Mr Cunningham said.

At age 20 the national serviceman delivered supplies to forward operating bases and fire support bases through countless convoys.

"There was always that element of fear but you didn't let that stop you - you were there to help your mates," he said "We always had a section of troops with us and if need be we could call in artillery or air support - we were pretty well protected."

The Portland "farm boy" moved to Geelong in 1972 where he drove trucks for a living for decades.

Mr Cunningham looked forward to seeing old mates on Saturday.

"I think of my mates that I lost - not only the

Appearing in Geelong Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the 23-year-old man was ordered to do 120 hours of community work as part of a community corrections order after being fined by police for his drunk and riotous behaviour.

More trains cancelled

More trains ran on time on the Geelong line in July compared to the same month last year, according to the latest V/Line statistics.

Punctuality was up, with 90.5 per cent of trains running on time, compared to 89.6 per cent in 2017.

But more trains failed to reach their destination at all during July than the month in 2017, with V/Line cancelling more services.

Reliability was down, with 96.7 per cent of services running in July, compared to 98.5 per cent last year.

The 90.5 per cent punctuality figure was the third consecutive monthly improvement for the Geelong line and the second-highest result in the past 12 months.

V/Line chief executive officer James Pinder said the Geelong corridor was among the best performing lines in regional Victoria.

"Whilst it's really pleasing to see consistent improvements in punctuality on the Geelong line, we acknowledge that more still needs to be done," he said.

"We want to ensure this improvement continues and have been working hard to improve overall performance for our passengers."

The main reasons for delays to Geelong line services last month were trains stopping at stations longer than scheduled and train faults.

Three extra services to Waurn Ponds each weekday would commence with the start of the new V/Line timetable on 26 August, Mr Pinder said.

"With changes to the departure and arrival times of some Geelong line services, I would encourage passengers to plan ahead by visiting our website or pick up a copy of the new timetable."

Across Victoria 96.7 of trains ran in July, exceeding the reliability target of 96 per cent.

Ashleigh Izard is a young Norlane mum with a mission. To break the cycle of disadvantage and poor parenting decisions which have had a huge impact on her own life.

Due to family issues, Ash was placed in outof-home care under legal orders as a 16-yearold - meaning she lived with a series of foster carers until she became an adult.

They were tough years, also shaped by a diagnosed learning disability. Ash still finds reading and writing a challenge - particularly when it comes to dealing with government paperwork.

Now 22, Ash said the arrival of her newborn son, Royston, 14 months ago helped give her the motivation to access a range of extra support services to develop positive parenting skills.

Ash joined the intensive Cradle to Kinder program in late 2017 and receives extra support services provided by Barwon Child, Youth and Family Geelong to help her set and achieve personal goals.

She said her main priority now is to provide a safe, stable and happy home in which to raise her son.

"I had some bad and good experiences in foster care but I want Royston to grow up with his Mum," Ash said.

"The best thing in my life is my boy - and being a mum. I'm a protective mum."

Cradle to Kinder supports vulnerable young families from pregnancy through early years. It gives practical parenting or health and wellbeing support to vulnerable young mums under 25 years until their child turns four years old.

This early intervention means there is less need for child protection services or out-ofhome care.

Barwon Region's two program providers, including BCYF, will share around $1.2 million to deliver Cradle to Kinder services.

Warrior Josip calls for votes

North Geelong Warriors are staying on the field for longer thanks Josip Zilic winning the inaugural Club Legend People's Choice award.

Josip put his $2000 in prizemoney towards a new rehab room for the soccer club, with gym mats, exercise bikes and more.

"It keeps them on the park for longer periods of time without injury," he said.

This year's prize money could turn a "wish list" project into a reality for another club, Josip said.

"Budgets for all sorts of clubs are always tight."

He urged Geelong locals to visit clublegend. com.au and vote for their favourite of 20 shortlisted finalists before 2 September.

"Have a look in your own backyard at what community members and clubs are doing," he said.

"There are so many people doing so much good in the community. "

"Those people will repay the faith."

The North Geelong Warriors Football Club junior coordinator and operations manager won the award last September.

"For me was a bit of a humbling moment," he said.

"You put all your time and effort into something you love - you never think about the accolades."

When Josip joined the Warriors 14 years ago junior numbers were dwindling and the club had 75 players. But he and the club recruited Karen and Afghan refugees, and other new players, getting the club up to 400.

"Our club - having a migrant background saw a need to give them an opportunity and help them connect with the environment they live in," he said.

"There is no better way than sport to do that."

The awards offer $5000 each for the overall legend and their club. Other finalists win at least $1000 each for them and their club.

As farmers struggle through drought Double Take is virtually swimming in press releases pledging support for our beloved rural producers.

Pubs, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, hardware stores and even the Gold Coast Suns jumped on bandwagon this fortnight to trumpet their efforts.

That said, farmers can probably stomach a bit of ‘virtue signalling’ if they get some much-needed financial relief.

And hats off to thousands around Geelong and Australia who have quietly, but generously, opened their wallets in support!

Meanwhile, Double Take was bemused at City Hall’s Gee-longest Kick on the Green Spine promoting the newly “transformed” Malop St over the weekend.

After closing the historic street for months twice - to the fury of traders, City Hall celebrated the recently-reopened Malop - by closing it to traffic yet again!

Just as well none of the drop punts and torpedoes smashed any windows in nearby stores.

Unfortunately, it was also a one-off.

Artful future for town hall

By Gill Cooper Council hopes to lure extra government funding to help expand Geelong Gallery's operations into the historic Geelong Town Hall, as part of the City's proposed $91 million dollar office project.

Geelong Gallery's board members toured the building on Monday, as the City launched its community consultation process on its new civic office bid.

Gallery director Jason Smith said there was strong interest in expanding into the 163-yearold hall "in a manner that honour's the building's past ... and realises its potential as a grand exhibition space and a leading 21st Century cultural facility."

"Great cities all have great galleries and here is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a truly great gallery in Geelong."

New festival hits Kardinia

By Luke Voogt Geelong will host an inaugural Festival of Sport this October, with more than 30 clinics, stadium tours and a National Rugby Union match at GMHBA Stadium.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust chief executive officer Michael Brown announced the event on Monday, following criticism the ground was underused in the off season.

"The trust's key objective is to open up Australia's best regional stadium to the community," he said.

"Kardinia Park is their precinct and we could not think of a better way to kick off an exciting summer of events than Geelong's inaugural Festival of Sport."

The free festival, from 6 to 7 October, would give Geelong kids a taste of the bigtime, Mr Brown said.

Geelong sports fans can hone their skills in clinics featuring Australian sporting stars and take photos with some of the nation's biggest trophies.

The weekend will feature roller derby, tennis, virtual sailing, stand-up paddle boarding at Kardinia Pool and Charles Brownlow Stand tours for Cats fans to explore the club's inner sanctum.

The festival will conclude with a National Rugby Championship match between Melbourne Rising, affiliated with Super Rugby club Melbourne Rebels, and Western Force.

State Government and Geelong's council funded the event to promote health and showcase the diversity of local sport, Sport Minister John Eren said.

"We invested in Kardina Park so it can host the best events and bring the community together," the Lara MP said on Monday.

"This event will do both while encouraging people of all ages to get out and get active."

The festival is the third event the trust has announced for the stadium in the off season,

In June Victoria's shadow sports minister Danny O'Brien and former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons slammed the trust for failing to deliver enough events.

Tackling deadly gas leaks

Free training is being offered next week to help local plumbers and gas-fitters skill up to test gas heaters and help prevent deadly carbon monoxide poisoning in homes.

Two sessions will be run by the Master Plumbers, and supported by The Victorian Building Authority and Energy Safe Victoria at GPAC on Wednesday from 2-4pm and in the evening from 5-7pm.

The training, part of a statewide rollout, highlights the dangers to families caused by faulty installation or equipment. It is open to all registered and licensed gasfitters and Type A servicing plumbers and their apprentices.

Plumbers who install and service gas heaters can learn the latest techniques to accurately test for carbon monoxide spillage and identify the effects of negative pressure on the safe operation of appliances.

VBA chief executive officer Sue Eddy, said local plumbers were urged to take this opportunity to build their skills and confidence and protect public safety.

Effective testing and maintenance of gas appliances is is vital to managing risks of carbon monoxide spillage and other factors impacting on safety, she said.

Master Plumbers chief executive Peter Daly recommended that gas water heaters, space

heaters and central heaters are serviced at least every two years.

"The potential danger of carbon monoxide poisoning exists in any home with gas appliances which are incorrectly installed or not regularly serviced," he said.

"This includes central heating units, space heaters, wall furnaces and decorative log fires - it's not just older appliances."

Master Plumbers has previously called for a phase-out of open flued heaters, starting with all public buildings and rental properties, and mandatory servicing every two years.

City Hall lowered flags on Monday in honour of much-valued young employee and colleague Madison Lyden.

The fun-loving 23-year-old was tragically killed last Friday whilst cycling in New York on "the trip of a lifetime", according to family.

Ms Lyden worked as a swim instructor, lifeguard and receptionist at Leisurelink, Waterworld and Kardinia Pool in Geelong since March last year.

She was riding with a friend on a bike lane near Central Park and was hit by a garbage truck after swerving onto the road to avoid a van that pulled into the bike lane. Both drivers stopped at the scene.

Her friend tried to resuscitate her until ambulance paramedics arrived. However Ms Lyden had suffered severe trauma injuries and was taken to the Roosevelt Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A New York Police Department spokesperson said the 44-year-old garbage truck driver was facing three serious drink-driving charges.

Ms Lyden grew up in Hobart and moved to Geelong to further her education, studying psychology at Deakin University.

Her sudden death overseas has hit family, friends and colleagues hard.

The City of Greater Geelong is extending support to affected local staff members.

Her father Andrew Lyden, a prominent builder in Tasmania, told Southern Cross News that "Madison was a beautiful, beautiful daughter. She was loyal, loving.

"For Madison to be taken from us in such a horrific way is gut-wrenching ... words can't describe how heart-breaking this is".

Tasmanian Premier, Will Hodgman, described the accident on Facebook as "the tragic loss of a bright, spirited young woman".

LETTERS In the picnic of time The mention of fencers converging on the Novotel for a conference (Double Take, 10 August) took me back through the mists of time to childhood days when tradies had a day off for an annual picnic.

There were picnics for butchers, grocers, market gardener’s, bakers, wharfies and other occupational groups, too.

They didn’t go anywhere flash, like our modern-day fencers. But all the workers, their wives and children would hop in the back of a furniture van - no seatbelts in those days - and go off to the Mornington Peninsula, the Dandenongs or a riverside or beach location.

They all enjoyed the camaraderie and appreciated the day off work as they relaxed and enjoyed a picnic lunch, a paddle in the water, games for the kids, and maybe some instruments would be taken along to accompany a sing-along.

It was a simple but memorable outing.

When we moved to Geelong in the mid1950s I went on Sunday school picnics on the train to Queenscliff.

The highlight was going through the tunnel under the Matthew Flinders school. However, the carriage lights always came on for that part of the journey But that’s another story…

What remains from the Banking Royal Commission is that criminal charges need to be laid.

Some of the banks confessed to thousands of cases of money laundering, which is a criminal wrong-doing and should be prosecuted.

Also, banking licences should be withdrawn, the Commonwealth Bank’s licence especially because it is the largest lender. The Commonwealth Bank should be returned to government ownership and then resume the task of issuing the currency and credit for this nation, as it once did.

Then we might get some truly responsible banking, like we used to have before the Commonwealth Bank was privatised.

‘They’ hate Christian values Dangers to a society can be through external conflicts or by erosion from within.

Like many, I fear we are suffering the latter.

Commonly accepted values of yesterday are now rejected or ignored. New ideas undermine the strengths and common directions of our social order.

This seemed evident when speaking with a serving army commando who showed common concerns at his unit being commanded by a woman who had never served in battle, and at the reduced requirements for any female to enter training. All this was to satisfy the belief

that binary sexuality is nonsense and that men and women are equal in every aspect, even on the battlefield.

Other concerns are the attacks on our language when, for a proposed special day, school children will all be ‘they’, not ‘him’ or ‘her’.

Then we have dictator Premier Daniel Andrews and his democratic socialist republic of Victoria.

It is proof of how Australian society has declined when we even consider voting for inept, hypocritical politicians to govern our states or country.

Geelong in novel mystery

By Justin Flynn Ruby J Murray's decision to base her latest novel around a young woman in Geelong is something she has wanted to do for a long time.

The Biographer's Lover, which has been released to positive reviews, is about young writer who is hired to put together the life of an unknown artist from Geelong.

She thinks it will be just another quick commission paid for by a rich, grieving family obsessed with their own past. But the artist's work spans decades, raising more questions than it answers.

"There were some things I knew I wanted to be included straight away," Murray says.

"I knew I wanted it to be in Geelong just because there aren't many books set in Geelong and this part of the world and that was very frustrating for me.

"So many books in Australia are set in the Outback or the bush or in super-urban settings and Geelong has already been forgotten about as one of the great industrial powerhouses in Australia."

Murray now lives in Oakland, California, with her husband, but vividly remembers growing up and spending holidays and weekends at her father John's place in Queenscliff.

"It was so busy in summer, it was packed and almost like you were in a fairground," she recalls.

"In winter it was like this abandoned, windy winter escape. I really loved that contrast."

Murray says she has been writing her entire life.

"I didn't want to be a writer career-wise because I thought it was a bad career decision," she laughs.

GEELONG CENTRIC: Ruby J Murray will tonight launch her new novel, which is set in Geelong. 183808 Instead she studied political science and worked in international development in Indonesia.

The Biographer's Lover took Murray five years to write.

"I wrote the book that I wanted to read," she says.

"I'd be delighted if it reached an international audience, but it wasn't the plan.

"I hope it makes people think about how history is told and who gets to tell it because when I was growing up it was almost as if women weren't part of history at all. "There were no female narratives at all.

"Whether or not they like that perspective or not, that's fine. Mostly I hope they just read it and like it - or don't like it - as long as they finish it."

Murray will launch The Biographer's Lover at Bookgrove in Ocean Grove tonight.

Footy icon debuts on screen After playing "bugger all games at four clubs" over 20 years, Troy Carrington has become the star of a new football film premiering in Geelong.

The onstage creation of comedian Damian Callinan, Carrington has become lead character in The Merger, a tale of salvation at a smalltown footy club.

Bodgy Creek has seen better days: the population is dwindling, jobs are scarce and litter has built up around the fading Tidy Town sign.

The next victim of the town's decline is the cash-strapped Roosters Football Club.

Carrington, an organic winemaker, lives a hermit-like existence on the town's fringe after breaking his leg running through a banner on grand final day.

Known as "town-killer" for leading "greenie" protests which closed a local timber mill, he forms an unlikely friendship with young Neil, who convinces him to coach.

The struggling club is at risk of a merger, or as actor and comedian Nick Cody tells Neil: "when one s**t team joins up with another s**t team to make a slightly less s**t team."

But Carrington teams with Neil's mum Angie (Kate Mulvany) to discover the club can "quadruple" its funding with government grants for employing refugees to rebuild its clubrooms.

Soon the club is teaching its new recruits how to play Aussie rules with often hilarious results.

The film features Logie-winning actors John Howard and Penny Cook.

The supporting cast for the film includes many settled refugees, some who spent years on Manus Island or were born on the boat to Australia.

Filmed in Wagga, The Merger comes to Village Cinemas Geelong on 6 September as part of Melbourne International Film Festival's travelling showcase.

Now in its 10th year, Geelong Maitri's Onam has grown into one of the biggest festivals in the region, according to organisers.

Geelong Maitri is a non-profit Indian social club, incorporated in 2013, comprising of members from different parts of India.

What was a humble beginning in 2008 among friends has now become a credible Indian diaspora gathering in Geelong.

The Indian community is growing professionally, financially and socially, and has become an integral part of its adopted nation, according to organiser Nishar Hameed.

Maitri's annual Onam celebrates a traditional harvest festival from the state of Kerala, India.

The day is a social gathering of Geelong's multi-cultural community, with an elaborate Onam vegatarian lunch and a mix of traditional Indian music, dance and activities for families to enjoy.

For Geelong's 5000 Indian residents, the festival is a huge event, but you don't have be

from India to celebrate it, Hameed said.

"Our programs and events have been listed in social media and thus gained much attention.

"For our events, we have invited artists from different places to come and perform on the day. In the future, we may even plan on bringing artists and performers from overseas."

Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala.

It is a harvest festival, celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state and by Keralite diaspora around the world.

"On our festival day we invite family and friends from the wider Geelong community to come and enjoy the dances and other cultural programs," Hameed said.

"The highlight would definitely be the Onam lunch which consists of 20 to 25 vegetarian items."

Last year's event attracted 400 people and organisers are expecting a similar number this year.

Geelong Maitri will celebrate Onam at Centenary Hall, Norlane, on 8 September.

Festival returns to Lorne Lorne Festival of Performing Arts returns this month, after a year-long hiatus, with awardwinning comedy, cabaret, magic, music and more.

The "revitalised" festival would return to venues around Lorne for sixth time from 30 August to 2 September, committee chair Peter Spring said.

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery.

Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.

“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses.

Ford climbs new heights

By Ewan Kennedy Ford has announced major upgrades for its big 2019 Everest SUV, with a stylish facelift, added levels of equipment, new fuel-efficient powertrains and optional Driver Assist Technology (DAT), the latter including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

Just as important in today's hotly contested SUV market the Everest has a warranty of five years with no distance limit.

Ford Everest is sold in five- and seven-seat variants and offers the choice of two- or fourwheel drive. The 4WD models have higher ground clearance for those who like to get serious in mild to moderate off-road regions.

There's an expansive new front grille, as well as a fascia redesign, bold bumpers and halogen projector headlamps.

Inside there's been a freshen up that focuses on dark colours.

The standard Ambiente variant has SYNC 3 with satellite-navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, making this technology standard across the Everest range.

Upgrades to the Ambiente include 17x8.0inch alloy wheels with 265/65 R17 tyres, Powerfold exterior mirrors, Smart Keyless Entry and a laminated acoustic windscreen to reduce sound entry.

Infotainment has a 10-speaker audio with amplifier, single CD, AM/FM/DAB+ and its SYNC 3 features Voice Control, Emergency Assistance and MyKey Ambiente's powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel five-cylinder engine with 143kW of power and torque of 470Nm through a nice spread from 1750 to 2500 rpm.

It has maximum towing capacity of 3000kg and drives through a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifter overrides.

CLIMBING HIGHER: Even bolder styling is a major feature of the popular Ford Everest.

The biggest news in the upgraded Everest is a new 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine with 10-speed automatic transmission that's standard on the rear-wheel drive, and optional on 4WD. Power is 157kW, torque is a juicy 500Nm that peaks at 1750 and goes through to 2500rpm.

New to MY19 Ford Everest Trend are a chromed grille, silver painted roof rails high intensity discharge (HID) with automatic levelling, LED daytime running lights and a hands-free power rear tailgate.

It rides on18 x 8.0-inch alloy wheels with

265/60 R18 tyres. Inside there is leather accented seat trim, an eight-way power driver's seat.

Additional standard safety features on Everest Trend include Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Keeping System.

Everest Titanium also has the new turbodiesel and 10-speed automatic. It has a new design of 20-inch x 8.5-inch alloy wheels with 265/50 R20 tyres.

Luxury touches include a dual-glass-panel powered sunroof with electric blind, powered and heated front seats, a leather-trimmed handbrake.

Outside are chromed door handles and exterior mirrors, ambient lighting and illuminated stainless steel front scuff plates.

Life is made easier by the fitment of semiauto parallel park assist.

New Everest is not going on sale until September but it might be an idea to get onto your Ford dealer sooner rather than later as the Everest has been climbing up quickly in sales and there may be delivery delays.

North Geelong mechanic Chris Mitsarakis takes great pride in his work and his business, Auto Express Service Centre and Mobile Mechanics.

By Alistair Kennedy Honda Odyssey has been on sale in Australia since 1995, when the people mover was the vehicle of choice for more than five passengers.

The latest Odyssey features an external face lift, an upgraded interior and improved driver assist technology.

The standard VTi model has an 'aero' front fascia design and front foglights.

The "luxury" VTi-L variant steps up to a new premium aero package with bolder bumper shaping, LED foglights and a dark chrome finish on upper and lower grilles and door handles.

VTi-L also gets a small sunroof over the front seats as well as rear door LED puddle lights.

The MY2018 Odyssey comes in Cobalt Blue Pearlescent and Platinum White Pearlescent, replacing the old colours.

Odyssey VTi comes with eight seats while VTi-L has seven.

When the third row seats are folded flat in the latter, the central seats can slide forwards, backwards or laterally offering a huge range of choice.

The second and third rows in the eightseater have three-way split seatbacks that provide a variety of options.

The VTi has the powered passenger doors, while the VTi-L has powered doors on both sides. Neither have a powered tailgate.

With all seats in place there's just 330 litres of rear luggage space but folding seats can expand the space to up to 1867 litres.

Fuel consumption is listed at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres; at 8.2 L/100 km we came reasonably close to during our test - impressive figures for a big seven-seater.

At $37,990, the VTi includes ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; emergency stop signal; stability and traction control and other safety features.

It also has front, side and full-length curtain

airbags with whiplash mitigation front seats and Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering structure.

To get the majority of advanced active safety features rapidly becoming standard in most cars you'll need to pay $47,590 for the VTi-L. For that, you'll get the Honda Sensing package including Forward Collision Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System and other additional features.

Both variants have a multi-angle reversing camera with the VTi-L adding front, side and 360-degree top-down cameras.

The Odyssey uses a dashboard-mounted colour touch screen to display its infotainment range.

It sits between air con vents and is quite small for a vehicle of its width and it's not easy to use which results in far more inattention than is safe.

Getting into and out of the Odyssey is a breeze but relatively-low ground clearance needs a bit of caution at times on rough roads or with some driveways.

With its large glass areas Odyssey has a lovely airy feel inside and provides outstanding exterior visibility.

Engine start/stop is via a dash-mounted button although the parking brake is the ridiculous old-style foot operated unit.

The 2.4-litre motor revs freely and quietly through the rev range and the Odyssey cruises effortlessly and quietly with its strong torque over a wide rev range.

Around town it behaves in a surprisingly sprightly manner, changing direction confidently while it cruises effortlessly on the motorway.

The suspension generally copes well, but rough roads can cause hassles at times. Although not the market leader in sales, Honda Odyssey has long been the queen of its class and the MY18 update sees it remaining there.

Port loss could aid Cats’ finals hopes

By Justin Flynn Hands up if you are a Geelong supporter and have spent most of this week fiddling around with the AFL Ladder Predictor?

Thought so.

Geelong's finals hopes are now officially out of their own hands.

Even coach Chris Scott has been spending too much time on afl.com.au.

"I could talk to you about it for ages, because I've probably done the ladder predictor 500 times, but you know what, it doesn't matter," he said after the narrow loss to Hawthorn.

"Our responsibility internally is to make sure we play as well as we possibly can this week and next week.

"Our priority has just got to be, (to) play as well as we can, get ourselves in good form.

We're in okay form but I'm confident we can play a lot better than we did tonight."

With Geelong in ninth spot, finals are still very much a possibility.

With two home games at GMHBA Stadium against Fremantle and Gold Coast, two wins should eventuate.

There are many scenarios that would see Geelong make it into the top eight, but the most likely would be for Port Adelaide to lose one of its last two games.

First things first, though.

Geelong should dispose of Fremantle tomorrow.

If Collingwood knocks Port over, the Cats will climb into the eight and with just the struggling Suns to play, finals would be a certainty.

One cause of concern for the Cats is the starts that they are giving other sides.

For the fourth time in five games, Geelong looked to be down and almost out early in the final term before coming back to a winnable position.

Last Friday night, Geelong trailed Richmond by four goals before storming home to finally lose by three points.

On Saturday, Hawthorn led by 26 points at the final change, only for Geelong to launch a comeback that saw it trail by a kick, before Jaeger O'Meara iced the game for the Hawks.

"The comeback was good, I don't think anyone can accuse us of not hanging in there and believing we can win when the chips are down," Scott said.

"I think the more pertinent question is, 'Why are we waiting so long to play that way in games'?"

Patrick Dangerfield had 40 touches and Gary Ablett 32, but several Cats players fell well short of the mark.

Lachie Fogarty (five disposals), Daniel Menzel (seven) and James Parsons (eight) were simply too quiet.

Tomorrow's game at GMHBA Stadium begins at 2.10pm.

Geelong will do enough to win comfortably by 37 points, but will be hoping the Pies can also get the job done.

Desperate Georgies still threat to Warriors

By Josip Zilic Although not the result needed to propel its promotion chances, North Geelong Warriors held fellow contender Moreland Zebras to a 0-0 draw last week at home to keep the final three rounds exciting.

The result saw Altona Magic officially crowned NPL2 West champions, with Moreland, St Albans and North Geelong unable to close the gap of 11 points within the remaining rounds.

With the week off for the league's catch-up round, the opportunity to refresh and set up for a strong finish to 2018 presents itself.

Coming up in a fortnight will be Sunshine George Cross, which has been rooted at the bottom of the ladder all season.

The Warriors will need to be at their best to fend off that sort of momentum, knowing that Georgies will throw everything at them.

They will need to do so without forward Darius Madison who received a second yellow last week and a proceeding red, meaning a one-week suspension at least.

It will provide coach James Coutts with a selection dilemma after seeing Madison turn the half way mark of the season with regular scoring and assists.

On the other end of the park, the defensive strengths have seen the Warriors not concede a goal for the past three rounds, which might well be Georgies undoing if it continues.

In under-20 action a controversial goal cleared off the line was awarded by the referee and ended up seeing the side finish with a 2-2 draw after goals from Jesse Krasic and George Ellis.

Fishing conditions over the last week have been far from ideal but those who did get out were rewarded with good fish.

The inner harbour again offered some decent land-based fishing with bream still on the bite and Australian salmon making an appearance.

For the bream, freshwater yabbies were a favourite bait when cast near structures like piers and boats and the salmon took a liking to soft plastics a bit further out.

Pinkies and flathead can still be expected for those fishing with a soft plastic or bait.

Anglers seeking cover around the Bellarine Peninsula found fish inside the Portarlington boat harbour and again the conditions restricted most fishers to being land-based.

Using soft plastics or blue bait, anglers managed to snag pinkies, salmon, flathead and trevally.

Find somewhere in the harbour where the wild winds we're experiencing will be behind you, and this will assist in long casts and covering more water.

Squid can also be caught in the harbour with calmer days being preferred.

Down the coast and salmon were on the bite in the surf from Bancoora Beach all the way to Apollo Bay. Casting metal lures from 30-60 grams into the gutters saw some anglers bag out on salmon to around 2kg.

Staying down the coast, the small estuaries along the Great Ocean Road have produced big bream on freshwater yabbies, scrub worms and prawn as bait.

Painkalac Creek in Aireys Inlet was a hot spot, in particular the stretch of river behind the shops to upstream at the fishing jetty on Bambra Road.

Some decent freshwater fishing occured across the region, with anglers at West Barwon Reservoir in Forrest catching brown and rainbow trout up to 1kg.

Using lures like Tassie Devils and even soft vibes was effective.

Worms and mud-eyes fished under a float has always been a productive way of fishing the dam as well.

Lake Tooliorook continued to fish well for brown trout, as the weather again restricted most fishing to land-based.

Fishing bait off the jetty at the ramp was productive and Powerbait was the standout.

Lake Purrumbete is the pick of the two crater lakes this week with trout and redfin both still biting well.
