A passive eco home in Kallista was awarded the Best Energy Efficient Design at the 23rd Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Awards.

Winners were announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday 4 August 2018 at the National Gallery of Victoria and Kallista Passive House was up against contestants from all around Melbourne.

What makes this house so unique is the innovative design and smart technology which has been used in its construction to create a "future-proof" home.

A distinctive curved structure enhances fire safety, and R6 insulation ensures minimal energy requirements are needed to heat the home.

Designed to Passivhaus standards by local Blackburn-based firm Maxa Design, the project adopts a unique response to energy efficiency, using its form to help produce a highlyefficient building, by using R6 insulation to the ceiling and the floor area.

It also takes great care in closing any gaps within the building and providing a way for condensation to escape via small apertures to the floor area in the external cladding.

This year's awards featured over 30 categories, from single dwelling and multi-residential projects, to interior design, commercial, education, hospitality, heritage conservation, and public buildings.

The awards typically place an emphasis on sustainability in building design, with categories including 'Best Energy Efficient', 'Best Environmentally Sustainable', and a new category: 'Excellence in the use of Recycled Materials'.

BDAV President Lindsay Douglas says each year the Awards entries "go from strength to strength and provide not only the broader community with a window into the profession's capabilities, but foster within BDAV members a sense of professional pride and a benchmark for best-practice projects."

The editor’s desk "I haven't been to Healesville Sanctuary since I was a kid," is a sentence I've used many times since landing on a desk in our Healesville office.

But it was only this past week that I wondered why, as I started bedding down our latest Tourist News magazine.

I'd travelled across Australia and overseas since I'd last made the short drive to the uniquely-Aussie attraction; since I last took a Sunday drive through the Dandenongs; since I last visited the Tesselaar Tulip Festival.

I'd been so eager to see the world that I'd forgotten about my own back yard.

After compiling the spring magazine, the Yarra Valley spring racing carnival, the Mustard Tree Op-Shop and Caf¨¦ in Lilydale, and the Birdsland Reserve walking tracks are all on my must-see list.

I'll be dragging friends and family with me to open their eyes to the possibilities on their doorstep.

There's no need to travel to the other side of the city, the state, the country or the globe - the Yarra Ranges is rich with world-class attractions, events, food, wine, music ...

While we target visitors to the Yarra Ranges with our seasonal snapshot, I do hope our local readers pick up Tourist News, too, and become tourists in their own towns.

I'd also love to hear about where you send your friends or family when they visit the Yarra Ranges, so I share a few hidden gems in our coming editions and check them out myself!

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Ned Kelly steps out The infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly, is in retirement in Warburton with his dog Daphne, according to a tongue-in-cheek letter sent to the Mail.

He attended the River of Light Festival in Warburton on Saturday 5 August.

"Ned is reported to have said he had no time for 'bricks and mortar' banks these days (other than the Bendigo Bank in Warburton which he uses for his royalty payments)," the anonymous letter said.

"Ned has resisted the temptation to use a secret Swiss account for his ever-increasing private fortune - contrary to advice given by his financial advisor.

"With the wisdom of many years on the run and many successful bank robberies, he now finds the river bank the only bank worth exploring.

"When interviewed about the Royal Commission into banking on the River of Light walk, Ned suggested that it was only fair that

errant bank officers should be jailed - noting that on a recent visit to Melbourne Gaol he found many empty cells."

Big cat sightings Documentary makers are calling for people who've spotted big cats in the Aussie bush.

On average, a big cat sighting has been reported every day in Australia over the past two years, producers of The Hunt said.

"Panthers and pumas are alive and well in the Australian bush and big cat expert Vaughan King is on a quest to prove it," they said.

"A recent research trip has uncovered some exciting new DNA, however there is still more work to be done and he needs your help!"

Report sightings from the past two months to bigcats.com.au and King will investigate, filming along the way.

"We don't intend to hurt these animals, we only want to see them protected and proven once and for all."

"Excuse me," a woman standing in line behind paramedics at a Yarra Ranges post office said, "thank you for what you do, do you a great job."

The two paramedics returned a heart-felt thanks for her appreciation.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, there was news that a very different kind of petrol bandit had struck at Caltex Lilydale.

A woman reached out to thank the lady who paid for her petrol.

"As you walked out the door you said 'have a nice day'," she wrote.

"I thought you were talking to the cashier.

"I go to pay for my petrol and you had already done it.

"Your act of kindness bought me to tears. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"I can't afford much but there are now five lucky people at 7-11 Boronia getting coffee from me."

IN BRIEF Body found in Belgrave

Commemoration for Kokoda

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner after the body of a man was found in Belgrave on Wednesday 8 August.

They were called to a campsite in forest between Old Monbulk Road and railway tracks about 6.15pm after a fellow camper found the 41-year-old man dead at the entrance to his tent.

Police said a post mortem would be conducted but the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Fence cut, bikes pinched

By Derek Schlennstedt It has been 76 years since Australian forces fought a series of battles along the Kokoda trail to try and hold back advancing Japanese forces intent on taking Port Moresby.

The 39th Battalion, an Australian militia unit, played a significant role in delaying those Japanese forces.

On August 8 residents of the hills, Belgrave South Primary School Students, and members of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association came together at One Tree Hill Picnic Ground to remember and commemorate those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association member, Mr Alfred Mallia reminded those who gathered at the memorial about the importance of the battle that took place on 8 August 1942.

"We are here today to remember the battle that took place on 8 August and the forcing back of the Japanese troops," Mr Mallia said.

"Today is to honour the 22 soldiers that fought and died at Kokoda, on the Kokoda plateau."

In January 1942, the 39th battalion was used to defend an airfield, but by June as the military situation worsened, the battalion received orders to move up the Kokoda Track to act as a blocking force against Japanese troops.

A month later and approximately 80 soldiers of the 39th battalion and five members of the Papuan Infantry Battalion engaged the Japanese, north of Kokoda. Ill-equipped and under-resourced against the experienced and better-prepared Japanese forces, the 39th battalion Australian soldiers bravely fought to hold the enemy at bay but were forced to withdraw.

On the morning of 8 August the 39th battalion counter attacked and successfully retook the high village of Kokoda where it was held until 10 August.

During the service Mr Mallia and President of the 39th Battalion Association, Merren Stockdale explained that although the battle did not win the war, it did delay the Japanese long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

Thieves stole $13,000 in motorcycles from an Upwey home.

Yarra Ranges CIU detectives are investigating the theft, which took place in Hughes Street between noon on Thursday 2 August and noon on Saturday 4 August.

Thieves cut through a fence and left with the Yamaha YZ 450 trail bike, a Honda CRF 50 and a Honda CBR 1000.

SES battered by calls

Alfred Mallia speaks about the importance of the 39th Battalion and the battle that took place on 8 August 1942.

"The Japanese first tried to get into Port Moresby by sea but couldn't, so they went around the top and to Boona and thought they'd walk across within three-four days," Mr Mallia said.

"The 39th stopped them and while this battle didn't win the war it slowed the Japanese long enough for reinforcements to arrive."

"In hindsight it was really the turning point," Ms Stockdale said.

"From 21 July to 25 August it was only the 39th Battalion that were there defending the shores of Australia."

"There are only 19 veterans of the 39th Battalion left in Australia and we have promised them that we will not forget them and what they have done."

Hopes for long-lost woman

By Kyra Gillespie Police have not given up hope on finding missing woman Joanne Gaye Deason, who was last since in Gembrook on 22 August 2003.

Then in her thirties, Ms Deason left a note for her boyfriend stating she was going to school and would be home in the evening.

Joanne failed to return home.

Police inquiries show that Joanne did not

arrive at school. She was living with depression that the time of her disappearance.

Born in 1972, Ms Deason is described as Caucasian in appearance, 160cm tall with hazel eyes, light brown/auburn hair and a fair complexion.

She would now be 46 years old.

Wild winds battered the Dandenong Ranges last week bringing flooding and power outages to the region.

On Friday, 10 August, Emerald SES was called upon 47 times to assist and remove trees which had fallen across roads.

Emerald SES Controller, Ben Owen said the strong winds were unseasonable for this time of year.

"We must be closing in 600 incidents for the year," Mr Owen said.

"It's probably about average but we do expect spring to bring some more wind ... generally July and August this year has been unseasonable as we don't get these windy conditions this early."

"We've had 230 calls in July alone which is very unseasonable."

Mr Owen said the majority of call-outs had been for trees across roads.

"Most of them seemed too have been trees down on power lines or across roads and driveway's."

"There were a few on buildings ... one house in Emerald had major damage."

Mr Owen warned drivers to slow down in windy conditions as trees might be blocking roads.

"When there's strong wind warnings, just drive to the conditions and be ready to stop."

"When we're driving in those conditions we never know what's around the next corner so we drive knowing that we may need to stop quickly."

Highway Patrol report A 24-year-old male driver returned a positive result for illicit drugs on Monday 6 August.

He will be charged on summons in relation to the matter.

A 44-year-old male driver was fortunate to escape serious injury after he lost control of his vehicle on Mt Dandenong Rd and collided with a tree on Saturday, 11 August.

Following the crash, the male returned a positive result for illicit drugs and he will be issued with a $484 penalty notice and incur a six month licence suspension.

His vehicle was extensively damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

Spare us a small thought As a member of parliament sometimes it is easy to get caught up on the big projects.

Whether it is securing funding for a local school, health or road project, they are often the ones that get the most attention.

But it is just as important to give recognition to the smaller ones.

And it is the great local advocacy work of residents that make them happen.

In recent months two different groups came to me needing some support for smaller, but very important projects.

I say small, but it doesn't mean these projects don't mean as much to our community as

Firstly, it was the 1st Kallista Scout Group - a great group that didn't have a home that they could call their own.

The Kallista Scout Hall had become worn-

down and has not been used in many years.

It needed some work before the growing scout group could move in.

We were able to secure $40,000 for the redevelopment of the hall, which opens up the opportunity to continue to grow in a permanent home.

It is a great result for an important community group.

Similarly, The Upwey Township Group brought me another great local idea.

Tool share libraries operate in many parts of the world and now we are able to have our very own.

We were able to secure $5000 which will help the group to expand their tool share service.

The tool share library will be a place where locals can borrow high-quality equipment to take on home improvement projects.

Members of the community will volunteer, offering to share their valuable skills to people learning to get handy.

The great part about these projects is the volunteers that have driven them to become reality.

Each and every one of them deserves a pat on the back for making our community just that bit better.

Emerald solving it Emerald Secondary College students have come together to participate in the Future Problem-Solving Australia program.

The program brings together more than 140 schools from around Australia and its focus is on getting students to solve some of the world's greatest issues from the perspective of the generation that will inherit the earth.

That issue which the students have chosen to address is the increase in anxiety within school-aged children.

Recognising that anxiety is a growing issue within primary and high school students, the Emerald College students have launched an innovative concept called A.W.A.R.E, which stands for Anxiety Welfare and Resilience Education.

The concept of A.W.A.R.E. is to create a safer environment for teens in schools.

Emerald Secondary student, Anya Hynninen, 15, explained that A.W.A.R.E was all about educating, creating and promoting strategies for stressed teens experiencing anxiety.

Their project addressed the growing trend over the past twenty years.

"We realized that a problem always has a solution," Ms Hynninen said.

"We brainstormed many solutions to help the issue and one of the many ideas we had was a de-escalation walking line."

"This line is designed to calm you down when you experience stress and the symptoms of anxiety.

"Our research shows that walking for five

minutes or more reduces the physical and emotional experiences you feel with anxiety.

We also wanted to connect with the indigenous heritage of our land, and we used this as an inspiration in the design of the line around our College grounds."

Future Problem Solving is an international education program for students of all ages, focusing on the development of critical, creative and futuristic thinking skills.

The program challenges students to apply their minds to some of the most significant issues facing the future of the world today.

Emerald secondary college Principle, Jodie Doble, said she was incredibly proud of this young group who were working hard to launch A.W.A.R.E.

Mapping out Emerald’s colourful past A map of historic Emerald is giving the community a glimpse into its past.

The heritage groups in Casey Cardinia launched the map at their quarterly meeting on 2 August.

Graeme Legge produced it by hand.

It shows places of Indigenous significance, the location of the original diggings, geographical features, local townships and early buildings.

Mr Legge is well qualified to produce such an historic resource having a long connection to the town of Emerald.

He has spent his whole life there and his parents ran a general store in Main Street.

He attended Emerald State School before later teaching there for 17 years and has been involved in many community groups such as the Emerald Scouts, Emerald Fire Brigade and Emerald Ambulance Auxiliary.

Mr Legge was also a Cardinia Shire Councillor for 15 years and was Cardinia’s Senior Citizen of the Year in 2015.

He has a passion for the history of the Emerald region and this hand-drawn map reflects that.

Casey Cardinia Libraries’ local history librarian Heather Arnold launched the map.

She likened it to an old-fashioned treasure map, not only because of its style but because it records the treasures of Emerald’s history in an interesting and creative way.

Defibs set for Upwey Chemists in Upwey and Belgrave are now armed with defibrillators.

The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group launched its Special Defibrillator Sponsorship program this month by gifting the Cardiac Science G5 Automatic External Defibrillator machines.

Chairman John Waters said the defibrillators would be accessible to anyone in the main streets in an emergency.

"Our board voted unanimously to run this special sponsorship program so that clubs and groups within our catchment can have the opportunity of securing a defibrillator," he said.

Upwey Community Bank branch manager Abigael Jamieson said Terry White Chemmart Chemist in Upwey would make its AED machine available in an emergency.

"You just never know what's going to happen in life and having an AED machine in a handy location such as the chemist located centrally in the main street - it's something that everyone can make a mental note of and hopefully use if the need is there," she said.

Belgrave Community Bank customer relationship manager Teresa Spruhan presented pharmacist Arthur Kyriakos from the Belgrave Community Pharmacy with a defibrillator unit.

"As well as working across the road, I'm also a local resident and it's good to know that we have access to a machine in our township," she said.

Not-for-profit community groups can apply to Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group until 31 October, and the board will notify applicants towards the end of November.

Farmer parma a hit

By Derek Schlennstedt Australians love smashing a parma at the pub and now just by eating your favourite pub meal you can help drought-affected farmers.

Call it putting your money where your mouth is, because whenever you buy a Chicken Parmigiana at The Watering Hole Tavern in Monbulk, two dollars will go towards helping farmers. Yep, it's that simple.

For the entire month of August, two dollars from every parma - kids menu included - will go toward the Buy a Bale charity, which delivers hay to farmers in need and allows them to continue feeding their livestock.

Rene McCarthy, owner of the Watering Hole Tavern said that they have already raised 600 dollars.

"The farmers give so much to us but we need to do something to give back to them because they're doing it so tough." Ms McCarthy said.

"We're using all sorts of produce from all sorts of farmers, so it's quite good to give it back in times of need."

"One night we sold 33 parmas."

"Since we started the campaign we've had people book tables particularly for that reason ... we had a table of eight come in and all bought parmas for that reason."

Ms McCarthy said that on average the restaurant sells at least 75 parmas a week.

"They are definitely the biggest seller," she said.

"We've got four different ones plus a kids they're not all just your standard parma."

"When someone buys a parma we immediately put the two dollars in the box ... we are physically donating two dollars out of our pocket so even if you pay on card we put the money straight into the box."

You can pick up a parma from The Watering Hole Tavern between the times of 12 midday and 11pm Friday to Sunday or between 5:30 and 10pm Monday to Thursday.

Pavilion for everyone A new pavilion, complete with community meeting areas will be built to serve local sports clubs and groups across the Monbulk area.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino turned the first sod on 1 August to mark the construction of the Monbulk Recreation Reserve pavilion.

The project received $1 million in funding from the Growing Suburbs Fund and $600,000 from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Furthermore, it received a Commonwealth funding of $600,000.

Mr Merlino said the new pavilion will support the development of football for women and be a place that welcomes all ages, abilities and genders.

"The new pavilion will provide a modern, multi-functional, purpose-built recreational and sporting facility with an emphasis on community connections," Mr Merlino said.

The Growing Suburbs Fund supports the creation of community connections, enhanced services, and provides greater opportunities at the local level.

The fund also helps communities to thrive and adapt to change.

The Monbulk Community and Sports Pavilion will provide a community gathering space, unisex change room facilities, showers and amenities, umpire change facilities, a gymnasium, a first aid / training room, a kitchen and canteen facilities, and a covered spectator viewing area.

Mr Merlino congratulated the Yarra Ranges Council and the community for raising substantial funds towards the total $3,800,000 to ensure the building becomes a reality.

As a teenager I had a fledgling acting career and did extras work on Neighbours. I'm sure if you go back to the Scott and Charlene days you might grab a glimpse of my great 80's haircut.

We also have lots of foster kittens during kitten season. We've got about 100 foster families with Animal Aid and my wife and I are just one of them.

the moment the clinic has some old infrastructure as it's in an old building, which is far from ideal. And it's actually in another separate entrance to the property. What we have is the Elizabeth Walker Centre, which is an admin building constructed in 2010 and is quite modern. So what we've decided to do is re-purpose that building as a vet clinic.

What keeps your passion for animals alive?

Just seeing the good work that the Animal Aid people do every day and the lengths they go

to helping animals and people in need. Their passion drives my passion.

Which object that you've lost do you wish you still had?

My wedding ring. Its somewhere buried in the sand on Eastern Beach, in Geelong. I took the family down to Eastern Beach for the day and I took my wedding ring off to put it in a bag for safe keeping ... turns out it wasn't so safe. I've actually lost two weeding rings.

CELEBRATING HOLMWOOD’S NEW EXTENSION

Celebrating care for aged Holmwood Aged Care has been providing care and accommodation to the local community for nearly 40 years and now has a brand new extension.

The extension opened on Monday 6 August and can easily accommodate an additional 40 residents in comfort and style.

The new facilities have taken over 18 months to build and adjoins the existing home. The extension is split level with residential rooms and living on the upper level offering views of distance mature trees.

Facility Manager Rachael Beever believes the new extension 'looks superb.'

Holmwood Aged Care provides permanent residential accommodation for seniors who are no longer able to stay in their own home.

Emerald Community Market Manager Non Blair believes that local markets add an event to a town that breaks the week or month and gives people a reason to gather.

Tribute song for veterans

By Kath Gannaway Vietnam veterans were honoured with a tribute song written and performed for the first time in public by the Dandenong Ranges Music Council as part of Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations in Lilydale on Sunday 12 August.

Forgotten Heroes, written by Cath Russell and Peter de Ryk, has a chorus that speaks of the experience and the legacy of the young men who were called to fight in Vietnam, reflecting much of what the day was about.

“And you gotta understand They dragged us through a fire Burned innocence from our eyes Boys never came back And you gotta understand Who we were when we came back And who we are now Forgotten Heroes.”

The song followed the DRMC's Bells of Peace project, which paid tribute to World War I veterans.

“The Vietnam Veterans said ‘it’s great, but what about us?’,” DRMC's Bev McAllister said.

Over four workshops with the veterans involving intense conversations about their time before, during and after the war, the song was written.

Lilydale RSL hosted Vietnam Veterans Day this year, with the veterans marching to the Lilydale Cenotaph.

Guest speaker, Major Kenneth Mackenzie OAM (Rtd), spoke of the battles and loss of life in Vietnam, the treatment of veterans back home throughout the war and on their return, and of the political environment of the day.

“Like our fathers and grandfathers before us, we have not forgotten who we are or why we are here today,” he said.

The Twenty Melbourne Painters Society (TMPS) was established in 1918 with the view of mounting annual exhibitions of members' work.

Ten decades later the society's aesthetic remains firmly grounded in classical disciplines, recognising that the pictorial elements of tone, form, colour and drawing, are vital prerequisites of fine painting.

About to celebrate their 100th anniversary, the commitment of the TMPS members is what the strength of the society is built upon.

Today's group of accomplished practitioners, as did their forebears, share a clear mission or purpose.

Olinda artist and member of the TMPS, Maxwell Wilks, certainly displays that commitment to the group and describes the Society's objective as consolidating and improving, "the standards of traditional art in the community".

Mr Wilks' work will feature at the 100th anniversary exhibition and he spoke to the Mail about his art which is widely recognised as featuring fiery orange reds, spark-like flicks of colour and vivid blues.

"I suppose I'm an impressionist, but I am a realist painter," he said.

"I usually paint from a subject and use oils, watercolours and pastels."

Having joined in the 80's, Mr Wilks has been an enduring member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society and even acted as president for several years.

He said art lovers were welcome to come to the anniversary exhibition, though anyone could enjoy and appreciate the art that ash been selected. "Anyone can come, you don;t have to be an art connoisseur," he said.

Directed by Leigh Whannell and shot in Melbourne, Upgrade is an outstanding example of stylish, compelling cyberpunk on a budget.

In the near future, quadriplegic auto-mechanic Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is implanted with a revolutionary artificial intelligence chip called STEM. With control over his body restored, Grey pursues vengeance against the thugs who murdered his wife and rendered him paralysed.

Upgrade has intriguing characters and a grim cyberpunk atmosphere tempered with hilarious moments of dry humour, much of which emerges from Grey's awkward chemistry with STEM, who manifests as an earnest, helpful voice inside Grey's head.

Within Grey's vendetta, Whannell deftly balances multiple threads of conflict and risk, both external and internal, to produce an enthralling, incredibly suspenseful narrative.

The cyborg thugs who paralysed Grey are deadly enough antagonists, but Grey must also hide his restored mobility from an increasingly suspicious Detective Cortez (Betty Gabriel) and prevent Eron (Harrison Gilbertson), STEM's creator, from shutting STEM down.

Meanwhile, STEM shows a manipulative edge, and the film presents unnerving hints that STEM may not be trustworthy.

STEM's influence turns Grey into a lethal fighter in visceral, superbly-choreographed action scenes, but there is a disquieting sense that Grey is not truly in control of his own body, which culminates in confronting body horror and an outstanding twist ending.

Riveting, brutal and darkly funny, Upgrade is my favourite film of 2018 so far.

Wandin could make it interesting sitting only one game behind in fourth, while Mount Evelyn, Healesville and Monbulk are all a chance for fifth spot.

With two rounds to go in Division 2, Seville and Yarra Glen appear safe in first and second.

Yarra Junction should stay in third and Gembrook should hang onto fourth.

It will come down to Alexandra, Yea and Powelltown for fifth spot, with Powelltown and Yea both still to have their second bye and to play Gembrook.

In Division 1 A-grade netball, Olinda, Belgrave, Woori Yallock and Wandin are playing finals but in what order theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll finish is still open.

The real interest lies with Warburton, Monbulk and Mount Evelyn vying for fifth spot.

Wheeler wows in VCCL team of year

By Richard Millott Upwey's Cameron Wheeler has made the Victorian Country Cricket League Team of the Year for the second consecutive season.

The 23-year-old Jack Feaver Medalist was recognised for his fantastic season in Norm Reeves Shield during 2017-'18, a home and away season in which he claimed 49 wickets at an average of 10.31, including six five-wicket innings and two 10-wicket matches. Wheeler also amassed 332 runs at an average of 36.89, including a high score of 90-not-out against Eildon Park.

The team was announced during the VCCL annual general meeting held at the CitiPower Centre at Junction Oval, St Kilda, on Sunday 5 August.

VCCL president and 2017-'18 VCCL chairman of selectors, Kelvin White, noted Wheeler's inclusion during the presentation.

"Cameron is fast becoming an unstoppable presence within the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association (FTGDCA), with his statistics underscoring his credentials as one of the most talented all-rounders within the region," he said.

"His inclusion for a second time into the VCCL Team of the Year sees him join seven other illustrious cricketers to have been selected twice into the team."

FTGDCA president Colin Capon praised Wheeler's achievements across the season.

"It is always a highlight from an association standing watching Cameron play and display the many talents that he possesses," he said.

Wheeler has now claimed 121 wickets in his 38 matches across three seasons in Norm Reeves Shield, while accumulating 677 runs during the process.

The Upwey-Tecoma Bowling Club members are looking forward to the completion of their new synthetic second green.

Replacement of the grass green was an issue that was subject to some argument among members, with many preferring the tradition of grass.

But the cost and time involved in maintaining a grass green had become prohibitive for such a small club, and the integrity of the green would ultimately have deteriorated.

A synthetic green was chosen and an opening ceremony is planned for Tuesday 28 August.

Club members financed the project, which ran into six figures.

The club now needs new members to ensure its continuing viability.

TRIP: the ambo’s story

By Kath Gannaway Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic Jason Callanan's contribution to the fifth Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Woori Yallock on Wednesday, 1 August, was a reality check.

Walking among the 500 or so people, and with the sort of crash image you can see most nights on the news up on a screen at the front of the room, he told of what it's like at a crash scene, and gave an insight into the consequences for the people involved.

TRIP is a combined response by Yarra Valley emergency services - CFA, SES, Police and Ambulance to the tragic loss of young lives on Yarra Ranges' roads. The target audience is 16 to 25 year-olds and their parents, and there are no apologies for telling it as it is.

"I'm not going to cotton-wool it," he said introducing himself as a paramedic who had "never been to an accident".

"I have never been to one accident but I have been to hundreds of crashes," he said.

"Every one I've been to, there has been a reason."

He added ... "You can get up and walk out ... there's no harm in doing that." No-one did.

There were eight people in the car. Four were trapped and four thrown from the vehicle. Three were seriously injured, four relatively OK and one, the driver, was expected to die.

"When I looked at them, so heavily trapped, I said in my head 'sorry, you're going to die'.

"I'm going to treat everyone else and if you're still alive when I get back to you, say half an hour, 45 minutes later, then we will treat you.

"That's triage; unfortunately that's the way we work in these cases," he said.

He spoke of the resources that crash in-

"What are the consequences for you," he said nodding to a person in the audience.

"Your brother who is short of breath having an asthma attack, we can't get to him in time because we're dealing with this.

To another. "You're baby sister who has

croup, we can't get to her in time," and another, "Your mum or dad who has chest pain, or could be having a stroke, we can't get to them either, because we're dealing with this; and it's something that could have been avoided."

There's a weary, matter-of-fact tone in his voice that says this is not a rare experience for paramedics.

Then he talks about the injuries and the repercussions.

A fatality gets headlines in real time and often for years as it goes through court, but injuries that can destroy lives and cost millions of dollars, tend not to make the news.

"First the girl in the passenger seat. She was standing up in the front seat screaming.

We tried to treat her and she is punching; had serious concussion but she's still screaming because she's broken both ankles and she's standing on them; all her weight is on her legs."

Punctured lungs, head injuries, fractured pelvises, lacerated, livers, ruptured spleens that's another passenger.

Amputated toe, ruptured spleen, lacerated liver, broken neck and a perforated bowel.

"She was ejected from the car," Jason says.

He explains with no 'cotton wooling' what that means to have your poo leaching into your stomach.

The girl underneath the car - the driver - her injuries included most of the above and a spinal injury that left her in a wheelchair.

"The consequences for her are a criminal record, she can't do what she wants to do, she lives in a nursing home, she needs a team of people to get her around ... right down to the fact that she needs someone to wipe her bum for her," Jason lays it on the line.

"How would you like to have someone have to do that for you, or you to have to do that for someone in your family?

"Simply because she made a mistake of getting in that car ... the wrong decision."

"Any questions?" he asks.

There are none.

Jason also provides this talk among other challenging subjects to high school students through his program called ROADWhyz Victoria?

Drivers feel need to speed "While our research shows the majority of people don't speed at all, an increasing proportion of motorists still see low-level speeding as acceptable.

"We understand that some in the community would like to drive faster, but we can never value a couple of minutes in reduced travel time ahead of our lives and the lives of others."

Mr Calafiore said the risk of crashing and being seriously injured or killed increased with even small increments in travel speed.

"While speed is not always the cause of a crash, the speed of a vehicle at impact will always determine the extent of the injuries that result," he said.

"Imagine if someone you cared about never came home because someone wanted to get home a little sooner."

Six per cent of respondents admitted to speeding at least half the time in 60km/h zones, and 9 per cent admitted to speeding at least half the time in a 100km/h zone.

More motorists think low-level speeding is acceptable.

Thirty-three per cent had used their mobile phone illegally while driving in the preceding three months, and 6 per cent had driven when they knew or thought they were over the legal blood alcohol limit.

Of the 9 per cent who reported taking rec-

reational drugs, 18 per cent admitted to driving a vehicle or riding a motorcycle soon after (equating to 2 per cent of all motorists).

Thirty-four per cent reported that they had driven while drowsy in the preceding three months.

An increasing number of Victorians believe they should be able to exceed speed limits, according to the Transport Accident Commission's annual survey of the state's motorists.

On Tuesday 31 July, the TAC released findings from the 2017 Road Safety Monitor.

The survey of 1742 Victorians shows fewer people support a low-tolerance approach to speeding.

Thirty-five per cent of respondents believed drivers should be able to drive up to 105km/h in a 100km/h zone, a proportion which has risen from 24 per cent in 2013.

Similarly, 13 per cent of respondents believed driving up to 65 km/h in a 60-zone was acceptable, compared with eight per cent in 2013.

TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said speed remained one of the biggest factors causing death and serious injuries on Victorian roads.

"The majority of Victorians are law-abiding motorists and understand the dangers of speeding, even at low levels," he said.
