Celebrating 100 days of Prep Prep students in Berwick hit a milestone last week, celebrating 100 days of schooling.

Students celebrated the special occasion by going to school dressed up as 100 year old's.

Many participated in exciting activities including old fashioned games, parades and arts and craft.

Grandparents and parents were also invited to share this important day with the students.

Berwick Lodge Primary School Prep students dressed as centenarians in celebration of their 100 days of Prep on Friday.

Carjacking shock from the vehicle, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

The man threatened the victim and demanded she hand over the keys before striking her in the face.

She provided the car keys before the two men got into her car and drove away.

The four wheel drive followed in the same direction.

On 28 July, the victim's car, a white VW Golf

R, was spotted by police driving with false number plates along Stud Road.

When police attempted to intercept, the car sped away along a service lane.

Officers were notified of a collision involving the VW and another car at the corner of Stud and Brady roads shortly after.

No one was injured during the collision.

The VW was soon located abandoned in a driveway, with a man seen fleeing the scene.

Southern Metro Region Crime Team detectives have released CCTV footage as part of their investigation into a carjacking in Narre Warren last week.

Investigators have been told a 57 year old Narre Warren South woman was driving along Harrington Drive just after 9pm on 26 July when her car was rear-ended by a light-coloured four wheel drive.

When the victim got out of the car to check the damage, she was approached by two men

He has been perceived as Asian in appearance and aged in his mid 20s.

Detectives are yet to establish whether the man was involved in the initial carjacking.

Community backs farmers

By Jessica Anstice Want to make a difference, and help the drought affected farmers in NSW? The Crazy for Ewes group will be leaving for Dubbo to deliver much needed stockfeed for farmers crippled by drought.

"Metro Quarry Group has donated a truck and semi-trailer and we are taking the trailer full of stockfeed to Aussie Helpers in Dubbo," group member Janie Stace said.

"We also have another truck full of stockfeed that will be going to Gunnedah Aussie Helpers. There will be close to 40 tons of stockfeed in the trailer."

Ms Stace said donating is important not only to help the farmers in need but to let them know people care about them.

"We are doing everything we can to help them," she said.

"The farmers in the drought area have no feed and no money so what we're doing is supplying them with some stockfeed and some money.

"Ever since it was blown up in the media, everyone wants to pitch in and help out. That's why we started Crazy for Ewes."

In conjunction with Crazy for Ewes, Pakenham Produce will be hosting a special day on Saturday, 11 August from 9am until 2pm to raise money for the drought relief.

The community event will include a sausage sizzle, Barn Buddies, face painting, fairy floss and more.

"All proceeds will go to donating stockfeed.

Pakenham Produce has an in instore account for donations," she said.

"The event is all about people chipping in and helping. We want to let the farmers know that we have their backs and that we are thinking of them.

"If there's a way we can help, we will."

Ms Stace and her partner will drive the feed up to Dubbo on 25 August.

people have come on board with donating prizes and money for the drive to Dubbo."

Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at Pakenham Produce on Saturday and drawn on Saturday, 25 August.

"If we don't help out, there will be no produce for the people to buy," he said.

"It will be every expensive and we will end up like a European nation where everything is dear.

"The money will go towards the feed for the

animals including cattle, sheep, farm dogs and farm pets."

Mr Young said everyone should get behind any cause that helps the farmers because they'll repay you when times are good.

A group of local businesses in the Berwick area through Rural Aid Initiative of Buy a Bale have put together donations totalling $9500 in order to supply and buy a semi-trailer load of hay for the Western Victoria fire affected farmers.

Mother depends on children Calling emergency services to help their mother is the 'norm' for five year old Aoife and her two year old sister Kiera.

Berwick's Lindsey Forsyth was diagnosed with a debilitating condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Neurally Mediated Hypotension.

Three years ago she was a special needs teacher, could run 10km and regularly participated in the Berwick Springs Park Run. Now she can barely function independently.

"I can't shower without help and some days I need help after going to the toilet," she said.

"Some days I can just about manage to get my two girls dressed and out for school run.

"Before January I relied on Aoife to contact 000 if I was unconscious. Now she is in Prep we have an SOS medical alert button that we have taught her two year old sister to press."

The alert button sends an alert to Ms For-

syth's husband, Paul Forsyth.

During her second pregnancy at 30 weeks, she collapsed and was told that she would have to finish work early.

Her cardiologist and obstetrician believed that the cause of the collapse was due to the pressure of pregnancy and would alleviate once the baby arrived. That wasn't the case. The symptoms did not alleviate and have continued to worsen over the last 18 months with Ms Forsyth unable to return to work.

In November 2017 she collapsed at home while Mr Forsyth was at work. Aoife and Kiera were at home with her and Aoife called an ambulance. She performed CPR as her mother's heart had stopped. This is what the children have witnessed many times in the last 12 months.

"My girls are very calm and know what to do when it happens and sadly this has become their normal," Ms Forsyth said.

"It is good that they don't realise the enormity of the situation but makes me sad that they have

Mr Forsyth is constantly worried and feels anxious when he receives the alert, wondering whether his wife and children are OK. "Safety has become the biggest concern. I have hit my head more times than I want to think about," she said.

"My husband also finds it quite scary; he says as much as he knows what it is and knows what happens he will never get used to finding his wife unconscious on the floor unresponsive."

Mr Yapp added there was “one well known councillor” who was “pushing like anything” to get the development signed off: “We think he might have the numbers to do it.”

According to Mr Yapp a number of residents along Pound Road had not even been notified by the council about the application.

He said if councillors approved the application, they would be “ignoring the very people that that they are supposed to be representing for the sake of cheap votes.”

Objectors also believe amplified music from private functions held at the church will “disrupt” the quiet residential area.

Another Bartok Court resident, David Thornton said the proposal would “impact the area detrimentally.”

“We have invested over $1 million on our land and house, and this will cause the valuations to suffer.”

Narre Warren South residents in a semi-rural court are objecting to a proposed church to be built due to traffic, noise and other concerns.

Casey council has received a planning application, proposing to develop land at Bartok Court in Narre Warren South for the church, including a caretaker’s dwelling and extension to an existing building.

The plans propose to operate the church seven days a week and be capable of accommodating 180 people, have a 14 metre bell tower and 54 car parking spaces with three extra parking spaces for the priest and his family - on less than 1.25 acres.

It’s not known what type of church is proposed.

It would also extend the existing slip lane in the centre of Pound Road to serve both the medical centre at Pound Road and the place of worship, as well as removing nine trees.

Des Yapp and his wife Marie who have lived at Bartok Court for over 20 years fear they will lose their privacy with more cars creating “extensive congestion” and an “inevitable overflow” of car parking.

“They’ve got to go down this driveway right next to our bedroom window to get to their church - this is once Bartok Court is formed,” he said.

He added the bell tower was also “going to be ringing right in our ear.”

“We have about 10 objections from people who will be directly impacted by the traffic flow in the court,” Mr Yapp said.

“As they come out of the driveway their lights are going to be pointing straight into the neighbour’s window.”

“Unless permanent access has been granted by Casey Council and VicRoads the access and egress to the Medical Centre and the Casey Christian Reformed Church onto Pound Road would also be removed,” he said.

The City of Casey is planning to become Australia's most liveable city through technology, innovation and data.

Cr Sam Aziz, Cr Tim Jackson and a council officer commenced a five day study tour visiting Newcastle, Ipswich, Brisbane and Adelaide in late June this year.

The tour was facilitated by the Cities Leadership Institute and was made up of a delegation of councillors, council officers and private sector representatives from Victoria and NSW. Cr Aziz subsequently attended the World Cities Summit (WCS) Mayors Forum and Conference in Singapore in early July.

WCS is a biannual gathering of leaders from around the world who come together to address liveable and sustainable city challenges, share integrated urban solutions and forge new partnership.

The activities that should be prioritised are

those that make citizens happier. That is, those activities that give people more time to spend with their family, their friends or being productive. Or activities that reduce the costs of utilities and give people more money in their pockets.

The three Casey representatives put together a consolidated summary of nine findings from across both trips.

The first finding was that the aim of creating a smart city is to simply improve the quality of life.

"Being a smart city is very much about the liveability," Mr Aziz said.

"We need to continue to drive activities that make the residents happy."

They learnt that high speed connectivity attracts investment and jobs.

Among the other findings was that most cities are yet to move from a pilot phase to implementation. The delegation saw many examples of smart city projects that are still in early stages.

This is due to the rapid emergence of the smart city market.

I have lived in Cranbourne for over 50 years, since it was a little country town with dirt roads and no litter.

I was honoured to be awarded an Australia Day Citizen of the year in 2004 for many years of community service, I am saddened and disgusted at the amount of litter I see every day when I walk. I pick up what I can, especially plastic bags and glass.

I think we need a campaign to clean up Cranbourne and Casey, and have a few thoughts.

Lobby our politicians to vote for the CDS on Wednesday.

Stop charging residents exorbitant tip fees - we pay so much in rates that we should get free tip passes maybe three or times a year. Why would I pay $100 to dump my rubbish legally when I can dump it illegally for nothing?

Council need to employ more bylaws officers to patrol, pick up litter and fine litterers.

Shopping centres need to take responsibility for the car parks and surrounds - they make squillions and could afford to employ people to clean up.

We need to turn our mentality around and dob in/confront litterers.

Use SnapSendSolve to let council know of dumping, abandoned trolleys, etc.

We need to ensue kids from kinder on understand what littering does to our planet.

Being held in conjunction with Homelessness Week, the overnight event is an opportunity for the community and organisations to come together and raise funds for homelessness.

by Taste of Tamworth as the winner for the emerging artist spot for their Friday night, 3 August show at Bunjil Place in Narre Warren.

The 23 year old started writing songs when she was 13.

She's had some great success in both singing and song writing, having won many awards.

In 2009 she decided to concentrate more on country, and brought her first guitar and started to teach herself to play, and then was

fortunate enough in 2015 to be chosen to participate in the senior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth.

She now performs around the City of Casey as much as possible and teaches music, dance and drama at the Songbird School of Performing arts in Pakenham.

The Taste of Tamworth tour provides the perfect opportunity for some emerging acts to get the chance to be part of a big show.

Emerging artists from the Narre Warren area were invited to submit a song, picture and blurb about themselves for the chance to be included in the show for a song.

Bunyips celebrated South-eastern Aboriginal communities came together to create Too-roo-dun - a unique family exhibition celebrating the Bunyip at Bunjil Place Studio on Saturday 4 August.

Visitors witnessed a re-imagining of bunyips and their homes with a contemporary interpretation of cultural stories surrounding inner demons and monsters.

Too-roo-dun is a Boonwurrung word for bunyip, which is a word from the Wathawurrung language.

Sometimes quirky and playful, these creatures are made up of kelp, oaten hay, paper bark, alpaca wool, feathers, fibre, seeds, teeth, bones, as well as a combination of traditional and contemporary materials, such as chicken wire, plastic bones, linoleum tiles, and even a re-purposed outdoor umbrella stand.

Behind these stories were seven Aboriginal organisations including Winja Ulupna, Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association, Bunjilwarra, Mullum Mullum Aboriginal Cooperative, Willum Warrain, CaseyElders Yarn & Art Group and Baluk Arts.

Reindeer thief sentenced

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park man has been jailed after pleading guilty to stealing a Christmas display reindeer outside a Clyde shopping centre and other offences.

Jovan Culibrk, 21, faced Dandenong Magistrates' Court via a prison video link on three charges of theft, driving suspended and disqualified, as well as bail and correction order breaches.

Culibrk allegedly grabbed the Christmas reindeer from outside Coles and drove away with it in the back of a ute on 11 December.

After CCTV footage of the incident was posted on Facebook, the reindeer was found in parts wrapped in a blanket outside a Cranbourne retirement village. The alleged theft occurred three days after Culibrk's residence was raided by police on 8 December, police alleged.

After the raid, Culibrk was arrested and bailed on burglary and handling stolen goods charges at Cranbourne police station.

The burglary charges have since been dropped.

Culibrk also pleaded guilty to breaching his strict bail conditions in April. He had not lived at a specific Frankston North address as required, as well as breaching a night curfew and associating with a forbidden co-accused female.

Culibrk had a limited criminal history, his defence lawyer told the court on 6 August.

The accused had been undergoing a program while in custody to address his gambling issues.

He also faced ongoing drug issues, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen jailed Culibrk for 30 days, declaring that time had been served while in 117 days of pre-sentence detention.

He took into account the "totality" of a pending committal hearing into handling-stolengoods allegations.

Culibrk remains remanded in custody, set to face a committal mention at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 2 October.

Cyclist dies after crash A cyclist has died after he was struck by a car in Narre Warren North Wednesday afternoon, 1 August. It is believed the cyclist and Holden Commodore collided on Belgrave-Hallam Road near Glenwood Road about 4.45pm.

Paramedics treated the 43-year-old Sandhurst man at the scene however he died shortly afterwards.

The male driver of the car stopped at the

scene and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Four teenagers charged over carjacking Four teenagers have been charged over an alleged carjacking of a woman in Hutton Street, Dandenong.

The 45-year-old victim was approached by three females as she stood at the boot of her white Mazda CX3 just before 5pm on 7 August, police say.

As she got in the driver's seat, she was allegedly struck in the face by one of the teenagers and pulled from the car.

The offenders then drove away in the car, police say.

Shortly after, they allegedly stole cigarettes and assaulted an attendant at a supermarket at Ormond Road, Narre Warren.

Police intercepted the car with the trio and a teenage boy on board at Mulgrave shortly before midnight.

A 17-year-old Clyde girl is expected to be charged with carjacking, evading police, assault and theft.

She was bailed to appear at a children's court.

Two Doveton females, aged 15 and 18, are expected to be charged on summons with carjacking, theft, assault and evading police.

A 16-year-old Thomastown boy is expected to be charged on summons with the theft of a motor vehicle.

A woman who claimed she'd been recently on her hospital "death bed" due to Crohn's Disease has been refused bail over an alleged shoplifting spree with her boyfriend.

Jade Emery faced a Dandenong Magistrates' Court bail hearing on 6 August on 13 charges including burglary, theft, failing to answer bail, breaching a corrections order as well as possession of testosterone, anabolic steroids and 'ice'.

When asked to prove 'exceptional circumstances' for her release, Emery initially had nothing to say.

She claimed she hadn't received medication in her cells, and that she'd been hospitalised on several occasions with Crohn's disease.

"If I don't get the medication I will die."

She was withdrawing from meth, she told the court.

Emery produced two medical certificates to explain her absences from court in April and May. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Emery and her boyfriend Troy Olierook allegedly committed shoplifting in Wonthaggi when she should have been in court on 2 June.

"So you can't have been in hospital (then).

It's impossible."

Emery stood accused of stealing a $1499 Samsung Galaxy Note phone from David Jones in Chadstone in November.

She and Olierook were also charged with stealing more than $1000 of power tools from a Bunnings store at Wonthaggi on 2 June.

The same afternoon, Emery allegedly took a storeroom key from behind the electronics counter at Big W at Wonthaggi.

She loaded $4389 of Nintendo and PlayStation goods from the backroom into a Target store trolley, police told the court.

Also in June, she and Olierook allegedly stole $2500 of goods from a JB Hi-Fi back room at Fountain Gate, and $1294 of laser-level equipment from a Bunnings store in Keysborough.

None of the goods stolen in June were recovered, police remand liaison officer Sergeant Roger Williams told the court.

The co-accused couple were allegedly captured on CCTV camera at each of the stores, he said.

Emery was also charged with possession of meth, steroids and testosterone seized during a police raid of Olierook's home in Dandenong North in February.

On 5 August, she was arrested on two bench warrants for failing to appear in court - as well as the four most recent shop thefts.

Mr Vandersteen told Emery that there were "doctors at prison (that were) more than capable" to deal with her illness.

Emery was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 28 August.

In a separate hearing, Olierook did not apply for bail and was remanded to appear at Dandenong Drug Court on 16 August.

He was also set to face Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 August on the shop-theft allegations.

Push on for health City of Casey has launched a new program aimed at inspiring, encouraging and breaking down barriers to get more women and girls involved in sport and physical activity called the We Are We Can We Will program.

Council kicked off the program with a fitting launch event at Casey Stadium recently, featuring an inspirational presentation from Olympic freestyle swim champion Elka Whalan Graham and a group fitness activity delivered by former Melbourne Vixens netballer, Ashlee Howard.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community.

"Through this campaign, council aims to empower and support more women and girls to get active and get involved in sport and recreation opportunities in the local community," he said.

"While it's widely known that being active is important for our physical and mental health, research shows that females of all ages gener-

ally have lower physical activity participation rates than males.

"Female participation through sporting or recreational clubs is lower and women and girls generally experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active.

"As we roll-out this program initially over the next 12 months, council hopes to inspire, boost confidence, reduce stigma and stereotypes and address barriers to participation to support more women and girls to get active."

Through We Are We Can We Will, council will be sharing the stories of local campaign ambassadors who are involved in sport and active recreation in a range of ways, promoting a variety of local sport and recreation opportunities that exist across Casey and providing learning and development opportunities that increase the skills of women and girls enabling greater involvement across all aspects of the sector.

They will also be hosting a summit that will bring together women and girls from across

Casey to take part in workshops, roundtables, practical sessions and panel sessions.

The first education workshop, Introduction to Sports Coaching Principles and Practice, is on Wednesday 25 July at 6.30pm at Olive Road Sports Complex, 2-81 Frawley Road, Eumemmering.

This free workshop is targeted at women and girls aged 16 and over who are involved in coaching junior players, who would like to know more about the fundamentals of good coaching practice.

Topics covered will include how to plan motivating and fun sessions, coaching styles, giving feedback, how to structure practice and approaches to organising sessions.

Berwick Lodge Primary School Prep students celebrated 100 days of schooling with a special dress up day on Friday, 3 August.

Students dressed up as centenarians and a special celebratory parade was held in the school's gymnasium.

Many parents and members of the school community came along to the parade to recognise the important milestone.

"It is a celebration of the students learning.

It's a busy say but they love it," prep teacher Jacqui Quelch said.

"All the students brought in their 100 Days of School projects and enjoyed a party at the end of day."

The rest of the day was spent completing fun activities in classrooms.

‘Oldtime’ Preps hit 100

By Jessica Anstice Preps at Berwick Primary School celebrated their milestone 100 days of school yesterday (Wednesday).

In honour of the momentous occasion, the children dressed as students from 100 years ago and as people who are 100 years old.

The students had the opportunity to show off their costumes in a special parade.

They played old fashioned games in the afternoon such as hula hoops, quoits, bowling and elastics and to finish off their special day they participated in arts and craft activities

in the classroom.

"I liked playing with the hula hoops because I could do it around my neck," prep student Chase said.

Prep student Darren said his favourite part of the day was playing the different games and Scarlett's favourite part was the party and eating the yummy food.

Student Audrey said, "I loved getting dressed up as an olden days princess."

Methuki enjoyed making her costume with her mum. She made a dress, an apron and a bonnet.

Casey is tops in service The City of Casey has outperformed the statewide averages in the 2018 Customer Satisfaction Survey, with council again receiving its best score for Customer Service.

Casey's overall performance score of 61 remained unchanged from the 2017 result.

The council scored well above the state average in all six categories, with performance in five out of six categories improving or remaining

stable compared to Casey's own results last year.

Art Centres and Libraries ranked as the top performing area with 73 per cent of respondents giving it a very good or good score. Recreational Facilities also rated high, with seven in ten Casey residents rating council's performance in the area as very good or good. In addition, the area of Waste Management saw Casey rated highly with eight in ten residents also evaluating council's

performance in this area as very good or good.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the results are encouraging particularly considering that council did not experience any significant decline in ratings in the past year and is performing significantly higher than the average rates for the outer suburban council group and statewide councils in many areas.

"This year we also saw an exceptional in-

crease in satisfaction in the areas of Art Centres and Libraries, and I have no doubt this is as a result of opening our magnificent new community arts and cultural precinct Bunjil Place in October last year," he said.

"It's no surprise that we saw further improvements in our results in Customer Service. More customers are using our website, email or social media to resolve their queries."

SPLASHING OUT AT RAMLEGH SPRINGS RAMLEGH Springs has recently announced a Kingswim, Learn to Swim centre and a YMCA Early Learning Centre will be opening within its highly sought-after Clyde North residential neighbourhood in early 2019.

Injuries all sides in arrest

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A police officer has broken his hand while punching a drunken and resisting 54-year-old man during an arrest outside a Casey home, a court has heard.

Responding to a callout for help, two Narre Warren police officers questioned the "visibly distressed" man on the footpath just after midnight on 27 September.

The man swore and yelled while unsteady on his feet, became aggressive and tried to headbutt one of the officers, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Glenn Horman told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 6 August.

Police deployed OC foam in an attempt to

subdue and handcuff the man, but the spray had no effect on him, Lead Sen Const Horman said.

The man swung his free arm at police, prompting an officer to strike him to the right side of his head.

Police then cuffed both the man's arms and gained control, the court heard.

The officer required surgery and 12 months off work due to his broken hand. The other officer required treatment for exposure to the OC spray.

A defence lawyer said the accused had been on painkillers, suffering headaches and loss of hearing since the punch.

The offences were serious, but the injuries were "punitive in themselves".

The man's partner had called police on the night for help due to the man "essentially selfharming", the lawyer said.

He had made similar efforts using a knife the week earlier, the court heard.

Due to a psychological breakdown and his alcohol intake, the man was "confused" and "disoriented" at the time.

The accused had since realised that the police were "only there to help him," the lawyer said.

He was still being treated for a long history of depression and anxiety, since losing his fortune

A mother is pleading for the return of her young son's bike, after it was allegedly taken from Cranbourne East Secondary School on Wednesday 1August.

Pip Macnamara said had picked up her son Charlie, 12, from school after he fell ill on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 August.

Charlie walked to school the next day when he discovered his mountain bike missing from the school's bike shed.

"They cut the bike lock off," said Ms Macnamara. "The CCTV shows it was there up until about 10pm and then the cameras have

Victoria Police are searching for 28 year old Jessica Beatty.

She failed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 3 May for allegedly dealing property suspected of being proceeds of crime and theft of a motor vehicle.

Three warrants were issued for her arrest.

Beatty is known to frequent the Cranbourne, Narre Wareen and Ballarat areas.She is described as 160cm in height, with a medium build, blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complextion.

Pets welcome at village Bear the mastiff cross is something of a star at Pakenham’s Main Street Village.

When owners Jenny and David Good take the gentle giant for a walk around the picturesque retirement village, other residents routinely stop to stay hello and give Bear a pat.

Bear came to live with the Goods a month ago after they adopted him as a rescue dog.

“He is just gorgeous,“ Jenny said.

“He can be quite stubborn. If we go for a walk and he decides he doesn’t want to go further he sits down. We have to take treats to bribe him."

"Our last dog was a star too," added David.

"People would walk past and talk to him as he lay on the grass in front of the unit."

The couple has lived at Main Street Village for 15 months and say it was management’s pet friendly policy that prompted them to move to Pakenham after selling their family home in Ferntree Gully.

“We discounted any villages that didn’t have a good pet policy. Main Street was perfect for us. The fact you could replace your pets

and the village’s fantastic location. We love it,“ Jenny said.

The couple installed a large ’doggie door’ leading to an enclosed patio and David planted grass in the backyard for Bear and his predecessor to enjoy.

The couple say they fell in love with Bear as soon as they saw him on the shelter’s website.

“He needed a cruciate ligament operation so they were looking for a quiet home for him.

What better place than a retirement village,“ said Jenny, giving Bear an affectionate hug.

Main Street Village manager Di McKellar said pet ownership provided proven health benefits and Main Street welcomed residents replacing pets.

“Pets encourage socialisation and exercise,“ Ms McKellar said, adding that pets can also assist with stress and grief.

“One of the first questions I get is ’can we bring a pet?’

A new chapter is opening

By Nick Creely AFL Yarra Ranges formally granted the applications for six South East Football Netball League clubs to join the commission for 2019 during a presentation at the Upwey Tecoma Football Club last Thursday night.

Beaconsfield, Berwick, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham had their applications ratified under AFL Victoria By-law 3.8 (ii) to transfer into another regional commission, paving the way for the new divisional structure in 2019.

Berwick Springs have also joined the commission as a new club in 2019, and will commence with an Under 19s and netball team next year with the view to later becoming a senior club.

After much deliberation over the name over the competition, the AFL Yarra Ranges commission also confirmed it will be known as ‘AFL Outer East’, reflecting the broader area it now represents. The competition will then be known as ‘Outer East Football Netball League’.

AFL Yarra Ranges region general manager Aaron Bailey explained the thinking behind the name on the night, and said it was an important decision in setting up the future.

“We want to encompass what we are, and what we have been and what we’ll become - the Yarra Ranges is a key part of who we are, and we want to certainly keep making sure our region is acknowledged along the way,” he said.

“But, we do now cover the south-east of Melbourne - particularly the councils of Casey and Cardinia, so we believe we need to have a name that reflects our competition.”

The commission will be offering both Under 18 and Under 19 football in 2019, and clubs can nominate a team in either age group.

As previously stated by the Star News, there will be three divisions making up the Outer East Football Netball League, with Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 grades.

Premier has been confirmed as an eightteam competition, which will feature the top five AFL Yarra Ranges Division 1 sides, and the top three SEFNL sides.

Division 1 will be a nine-team competition with the bottom five AFL Yarra Ranges Division 1 sides, and also featuring the bottom three SEFNL clubs, and one team from Division 2 of the Yarra Ranges (by application).

Division 2 will also be an eight-team competition, made up of current AFL Yarra Ranges Division 2 clubs.

The Yarra Ranges commission has made the decision on where each team sits in the divisional structure by looking at factors such as on-field club performance from the past five years, financial sustainability, ability for the club to compete, quality of boys’ and girls’ juniors and junior pathway, and the facilities - including the capacity for crowds, netball, all-ability access and females (including future development plans).

Aaron Bailey outlined the key details behind the new football and netball competition for 2019. 182900 The preferred promotion and relegation system will be one up, one down, and in 2019, promotion from Division 2 will be application or invitation only. By 2021, the aim is to have promotion and relegation across all divisions.

The commission has also recommended an increase in player point levels to match neighbouring competitions, and a set salary cap that can be sustainable for the future of all clubs.

Points will be increased to 44 for Premier, 44 for Division 1 and 47 for Division 2, while the salary cap limits for 2019 will be $125,000 for Premier, $110,000 for Division 1 and $80,000 for Division 2.

However, tiered points will be applied to clubs in any division in order to achieve competition balance, with the SEFNL clubs likely

to be given 39 points in Premier and 41 points in Division 1.

The salary cap amounts will be reviewed on an annual basis, and the Premier cap should closely align to the MPNFL and EFL Division 1 competitions.

Women’s football is also high on the agenda, with Bailey confirming they are making inroads on how to grow the game.

“We can confirm that we are working with the EFL (Eastern Football League) to go to an Eastern Region Women’s competition,” he said.

“Hopefully with a structured divisional setup with Premier and working down, our aim is to grow to the point that our strong women’s teams can compete with the EFL and we will have a standalone Yarra Ranges development competi-

tion, so there’s work happening in terms of that.”

In terms of the netball structure in 2019, the commission will introduce Under 13, 15 and 17 age groups, and provide divisional netball in junior ranks for clubs with strong numbers.

Moving forward, AFL Yarra Ranges has announced Matt Fotia as the media manager starting in September, while it will also look to appoint a head of umpiring and netball development manager in the coming months. Totally Workwear Berwick and Knoxfield has also been locked in as the major sponsor of the Premier competition.

The full draft of the findings of the AFL Yarra Ranges Review will be released on 17 August, with clubs having 28 days to respond to the reviews and make any further recommendations.

The Cavs’ Championship dream is dashed

By Hayley Wildes After a regular season that built nicely towards the business end, the Casey Cavaliers State Championship men unfortunately weren't able to carry on that momentum in the first round of the Big V finals.

Facing the Hawthorn Magic at Boorondara Sports Complex on Saturday night, the Cavs played a great 37 minutes of basketball, but their season came to a close due to a grim final three minutes of play.

The Cavs came out firing and established a 17-9 lead after five minutes of play as Ben Louis pushed the pace and attacked the rim.

After a timeout, the Magic found their groove and fought their way back into the contest, owning a one-point lead at the first break, 21-20.

In almost a carbon copy of the first quarter, Casey again jumped out to a 32-24 lead early in the second term as Louis, Raheem Lemons and Brent Hobba drained big buckets.

heat on offence and by half time, the Cavs lead was just two points, 39-37.

It was a high-octane third quarter as both teams fought tooth and nail. Casey held an eight-point advantage with just over three minutes to play in the quarter, but Hawthorn - led by sharp-shooter Jack Barry - reduced the Cavs' lead to just one-point with a quarter to play.

The crowd hung on every possession and it looked like it was going down to the wire with scores tied at 67-all with 3:20 left on the clock.

When buckets were needed down the stretch, Casey went cold and was unable to stop Hawthorn from pulling away.

The Cavs scored just one bucket - a Brandon Polk jump shot - in the final 3:20 of the game and the Hawks were simply sublime finishing the game on a 13-2 run with Jack Barry and Nelson Kirksey hitting clutch triples.

Hawthorn claimed an 80-69 win and ended Casey's season in frustrating fashion. Matt Donlan (16 points, 3 rebounds) top-scored for Casey, while Raheem Lemons (13 points, 10 re-

bounds, 3 steals) finished his dominant season with yet another double-double.

Ben Louis' (12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) efforts typified his season - involved in everything and always fighting for an extra possession.

Despite a bitterly disappointing final three minutes of the season, Casey produced some great basketball throughout the season and there is definitely a lot to build on going forward.

Casey fans still have a lot to look forward to in the remainder of 2018 Big V finals, with the Division 1 and Youth League 2 women tipping off their respective finals campaigns this weekend.

The Division 1 women travel to Geelong to face the Supercats on Saturday night in the first game of a best-of-three series for a place in the grand final.

Meanwhile, the Youth League 1 women host the Frankston Blues at Casey Stadium from 8pm on Saturday night. They can punch their ticket to the grand final with a win.

Comets are in fine form

By Nick Creely FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER WRAP - ROUND 18 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets continued on with the impressive run of State League 1 South East form with a 2-0 win over South Springvale at Comets Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The home side took a handy 1-0 lead into half time, and put the game to bed early in the second half with a strike from Dejan Radojicic, who scored a brace.

It continues on a confidence boosting last month after what has been a tough season for the Comets, who now sit with a 5-10 record with only a handful of matches left to play.

In other games, Richmond SC defeated Warragul United 4-0 at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST In State League 2 South East action over the weekend, Berwick City knocked off Frankston Pines 1-0 at Jack Thomas Reserve.

City took the lead in the 25th minute with Jarod Blackbourn hitting the back of the net, and from there, the home side held firm to take the win.

The visitors certainly had their moments in the second half, but a stingy City defence which has leaked just 20 goals in 18 games this season - were too strong in the end.

Doveton SC also kept up their winning ways, with the top of the table Doves winning 2-0 against Mazenod Victory at Waratah Reserve.

The Doves keep knocking away every challenger in its way, and now sit top of the ladder by a whopping six points.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Casey Panthers defeated Bunyip 3-2 in a highly entertaining affair between the two rivals at Bunyip Recreation Reserve.

With three games remaining in the home and away season, Casey is undoubtedly the form team of the VFL. Currently riding an incredible 11-game winning streak - their latest scalp a 91-point thrashing of the Northern Blues at Casey Fields on Saturday - the Demons (13-2) sit second on the ladder, just percentage behind Richmond in top spot with a game in hand.

Due to injury, captain Jack Hutchins was sidelined until Round 10, but he could tell something special was brewing at Casey Fields.

“There were a couple of games early on where we lost to Richmond and Geelong when we were still trying to find our feet and when we did get challenged, we weren’t able to move on from it, deal with it and process it accordingly,” he said.

“After those two losses, I think we found our feet and I noticed it sitting on the sidelines; how the group had come together and what they were able to achieve.

“Then it was great to be able to jump back into the side and be a part of it.”

Being a part of it is an understatement.

Hutchins, since joining to the club in 2016, has given his all and is the type of player anyone would want on their side; a team-first player who competes all day and is rarely beaten in a contest.

The contest, and being a monster defensive team, is what Casey is all about and with a skipper that lives and breathes that mantra it’s a match made in heaven.

Hutchins spoke about the driving factors of Casey’s dominant season thus far.

“The whole defensive side of our game has been key,” he said.

“We want to be known for our contest and being able to outnumber at the contest, while playing for each other and with a real spirit.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve been challenged and we haven’t lost our cool - we’ve been able to acknowledge it and work through the process to get the job done.”

Hutchins also points to coach Jade Rawlings - in his first season with Casey - as having a huge impact on the playing group.

“He’s been fantastic,” he said.

“The beauty of him is that he’s honest and upfront with you and you always know where you

In a season full of highlights, perhaps the greatest of them all was the stunning comefrom-behind win on the road against Geelong in Round 16.

“It was unbelievable and they’re the sort of games you want to be a part of,” Hutchins said of the thrilling three-point win.

“In the time I’ve been at Casey that was probably one of the best wins I’ve been a part of.

“When you get challenged and find a way to win, those are the wins you can look back on when you get in a similar situation and have the confidence that you can play through it and you’re never out of it.”

With three games remaining before finals, Hutchins’ mind is set firmly on the task at hand, but he can’t wait for September football.

“It’s a wonderful time of year and anything can happen in finals,” he said.

“You just want to be thereabouts to give yourself the best chance and I think we have done that.

“We’re in a good position to be able to give it a really good crack at the end of the year.”

Although Hutchins is under no illusions about the challenges that lie ahead, the thought of captaining Casey to the ultimate prize in Victorian football is a tantalising one - adding: “To be able to captain a side and be part of a premiership, that’s the dream isn’t it?

“We missed out in the grand final two years ago. To make it and come so close, that still sits in the back of the gut and I’d love the opportunity to have another go at it.”

Little moments that count

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 14 Saturday was a glimpse.

A glimpse into Narre Warren's ability to weather the storm and play a brand of football that holds up in the heat of battle. It was also a glimpse into what will one of the most fascinating finals series in recent memory.

The Magpies are now all but sealed as the minor premiers, and the pressure will certainly come in the coming month as they look to turn the tables on last year's grand final loss, but it's a challenge they seem primed for.

The anticipated clash between the Magpies and the in-form Cranbourne at Kalora Park was finals like, and in this case, Matt Shinners' side - as they have all year - stood up in the critical moments to find an extra gear when challenged, 12.11 (83) to 7.5 (47).

It wasn't a moment that yielded a goal, but young star Ryan Quirk set the tone after his side got off to a slow start after Eagles sharpshooter Marc Holt snared the opening goal of the match.

Holt looked dangerous early, and loomed as the match winner, something Shinners had to address.

The Eagles were getting their hands on the footy, with Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Anthony Vella getting plenty of run going, when Quirk bravely went back with the flight of the ball to take a telling mark as the visitors surged forward.

It was one of those little moments that seemed to shift the momentum, one of many in a four quarter effort.

All of a sudden, the Magpies found a spark, and despite missing some gettable set-shots, eventually broke free to set up a 17-point quarter time lead, looking ominous in attack with their daring ball movement.

As has been the case all season, the Magpies didn't waste time; they quickly played on after taking a mark and flicked the ball around with an energy so telling.

It was much of the same over the rest of the game, with leaders in Dylan Quirk and Michael Collins beginning to assert themselves, with Quirk in particular producing a brilliant moment by hand in the slippery conditions that resulted in a Nick Scanlon goal in the second term.

Despite the best efforts of the likes of Glenn Osborne, Dillan Bass and Brandon Osborne to cope with the amount of ball spilling into their defensive arc, the Eagles were under the pump and couldn't penetrate off half back with Jesse Davies, Zietsman, Ryan Quirk and Col McNamara intercepting everything in their path and bringing the ball back with searing run.

The Magpies took a 35-point lead into half time, and booted another three third term goals to snuff out any chance of a comeback, before taking the foot off the pedal slightly but controlling the final term.

Running out 36-point winners, Magpies coach Matt Shinners pointed to the learnings taken after losing to the Eagles back in Round 9 at home, in a game he described at the time as one of the best local matches he's seen.

"When we lost to them last time at home, the conditions were a little different weather wise," he said.

"We had enough of the ball that day to suggest we could have come away and won, so we discussed where we went wrong, and we made sure we didn't get caught in the same trap.

"They've got some good outside runners, so we had to look at things differently compared to last time, and it came off which was great."

Despite a slow start to the game, Shinners was impressed with his side's ability to control

"We didn't start as good as I wanted, but it's one of those things where the opposition is ready - we tinkered with a couple of things, and it paid dividends for us," he said.

"We managed to control the majority of the game a lot more than I would have thought, to be honest - Cranbourne are a quality side, so I thought we played quite well."

Officer, meanwhile, seems finals bound for the first time since 2004.

In a virtual elimination final between the Lions and Kangaroos, the pressure was certainly on to see who could grasp the fifth spot on the ladder with both hands, with the visitors running out 11.8 (74) to 7.14 (56).

The Kangaroos' recent form has pointed to a side that has clearly earnt a chance at an elimination final come late August, with coach Doug Koop only recently describing the Kangaroos as "the best of the rest".

The swirling wind down at Toomuc Reserve made life difficult for both sides, who were struggling to adjust to the conditions.

Ultimately, the Kangaroos had enough class on the outside to boot away, kicking five goals to one in the final term to draw clear of Tooradin and Pakenham with two rounds left to play.

With two games between the Seagulls in sixth spot, the Kangaroos can now prepare for

their first finals series in 14 years, where they will almost certainly meet Leigh McQuillen's Beaconsfield in an elimination final on 26 August.

Beaconsfield meanwhile, dominated Doveton from start to finish and enjoying 39 scoring shots to seven to set up a 137-point win, 22.17 (149) to 1.6 (12).

With spearhead Nathan Langley back in to the side and arguably the best player in the competition, Scott Meyer expected to be back before finals, the Eagles started to find some run, and more importantly, put it on the scoreboard - something that has been an issue for parts throughout the season.

Despite the usual fight by the likes of Doves trio Mitch Cotter, Matt Stapleton and Matthew Boyd, the class and speed of Riley Verbi, Bailey Morrish and the laser like kicking of Jake Bowd was giving coach Daniel Charles serious headaches.

The Eagles build their lead to 75 at half time, and eventually 99 at the final change, with the home side queuing up to get their chance to hit the scoreboard.

Unwilling to let his side simply take the foot off the pedal, momentum coming into next week became key, with the Eagles slamming on a further six unanswered goals in the final term to stretch the margin into triple figures.

Lions repel the Lightning

By Hayley Wildes & Nick Creely MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 17 A scintillating final quarter burst was enough for Pearcedale to knock off Rye at Tractor Park on Saturday, 10.15 (75) to 6.12 (48).

The Panthers and Demons were neck and neck for the majority of the contest, but the home side managed to slam on five goals to one in the final term to run away comfortable winners.

Luke Daniel and Luke Dalmau were once again prominent for the Panthers, while Laughlin Cowell snared three majors.

A highly inaccurate Devon Meadows, meanwhile, lost to the lowly Tyabb by eightpoints at Glover Reserve, 10.8 (68) to 7.18 (60).

The Panthers led at the final change by just three points, but disappointingly kicked 1.8 to 3.3 in the final term to fall short in what was a tough day for the club.

Despite the result, Michael Theodoridis booted another four majors, while Mat Fletcher was almost a lone hand for his side with another brilliant display.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 The Doveton Eagles bounced back from last week's defeat with a hard-fought win over Murrumbeena at home, 12.11 (83) to 8.7 (55).

Keysborough was challenged at times by Caulfield, but its class shone through as the side claimed a 14.8 (92) to 9.7 (61) win at home.

Chris Bryan (five goals) was electric up forward and James Anwyl played a pivotal role.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 15

In Division 3, Hampton Park was a class above Hallam, claiming a cruisy 14.7 (91) to 5.4 (34) win. Reece Smart and Justin Hill (six goals) dominated for the Redbacks, while Jonathan Daly and Rory McIvor battled hard all day for the Hawks.

Endeavour Hills powered away in the final term against Heatherton to record a 13.13 (91) to 7.6 (48) win at home. Nick Gay and Daniel Morrison were sublime for the Falcons, while Reagan Maddaford was best for Heatherton.

Springvale Districts claimed a 114-point win over South Yarra on the road. The Dees held the Lions goalless after half-time to run out 19.22 (136) to 3.4 (22) winners. Peter Heng was best in a team effort for the Dees.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 16 It was a top of the table battle at Marriott Waters Reserve and Carrum Patterson Lakes defeated Lyndhurst.

Carrum Patterson Lakes held Lyndhurst to just one behind in the first half and went onto claim a 10.9 (69) to 6.5 (41) win.

The class of Matthew Ryan and Liam Hickman shone through as Carrum Patterson Lakes moved a win clear on top. Despite the loss, Jason Twite and Charlie Gardiner impressed for the Lightning.

Lyndale flexed its muscle against Sandown, recording a 12.2 (74) to 2.3 (15) win. Moses Faaola dominated for the Pumas, while Trevor Kumetaitis slotted four majors.

Dandenong claimed its third win of the season in a thriller against Moorabbin. With both teams trading punches all day, the Redlegs were in front when it mattered most to claim a 16.5 (101) to 13.15 (93) win.

Jayke Hopkins (four goals) was brilliant and David Barrie's four goals were also vital.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 St Johns was no match for Yarra Old Grammarians at Doncaster Reserve. After being held goalless in the first half, St Johns improved in the second half, but the game was already well out of reach.

Anthony Brannan and Rohan Scott battled valiantly for St Johns in the 17.14 (116) to 7.6 (48) loss.

VFLW ROUND 13 In typically windy conditions at Casey Fields on Saturday morning, the Casey Demons held strong for a hard-fought win over Carlton, 5.7 (37) to 3.9 (27).

Kicking with the wind in the opening term, Casey jumped out to a 22-point lead at the first break, but Carlton returned the favour with three goals to zero in the second term.

In a frantic final quarter, the Demons - despite being held scoreless - held Carlton goalless and recorded a 10-point win as Kate Hore and Bianca Jakobsson starred.

The Stingrays and Power continue on their winning ways

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays were tested by the Northern Knights on the weekend, but as they have done all season long, found a way to get the win and extend their winning streak to nine games.

The Rays were wasteful in front of goal and it cost them dearly as they struggled their way to 2.11 (23) at the main break.

Kicking with the wind in the first term, Dandenong peppered the goals and had almost triple the amount of inside 50s but was unable to convert. Despite their dominance, the Stingrays trailed 3.0 (18) to 1.5 (11) at quarter-time.

Dandenong wasted more opportunities in the second term, but an important late goal to Corey Ellison trimmed the lead to eight points at half time.

The third term was one of complete domination. Jeremy Burton kicked a fine running goal just 18 seconds into the quarter to start what was a game-winning quarter of football for Dandenong.

The Rays booted six goals to zero as Finlay Bayne and Bailey Williams slotted two goals each in the term.

The likes of Lachlan Young, captain Campbell Hustwaite and Daniel Frampton asserted themselves on the contest to have Dandenong 34 points up at the final break.

The Knights kicked with the wind in the final term and put on three goals to zero. Despite not registering a goal in the last quarter, Dandenong claimed its ninth win on the trot, 8.19 (67) to 8.2 (50).

Williams booted vital goals when they were needed.

The Rays (13-1) have now locked up top spot on the ladder with two rounds to play.

In a see-sawing battle against the Oakleigh Chargers, the Gippsland Power came away with the four points in a thriller.

Gippsland jumped out to a 14-point lead at the first break, but the middle two quarters were dominated by Oakleigh as they scored five goals and held Gippsland to just one.

Trailing by 14 points at the final change, Gippsland had the challenge set out in front of them and went to work immediately.

Two early goals had the Power just two points adrift after five minutes and seemingly possessing all of the momentum. As had been the story all day, there was another twist in the game as Oakleigh replied with

two majors of its own.

In the final 15 minutes of play, the Gippy boys willed themselves to victory, booting three majors and holding the Chargers to two behinds. Gippsland grabbed the lead with three minutes to play when Noah Gown kicked truly and they held on for a dramatic 9.6 (60) to 8.7 (55) win.

Gown’s tremendous form continued with a best on ground performance, highlighted by kicking the match-winning goal, while Boadie Motton, Sam Flanders and Bailey Beck all impressed. Gippsland (10-2-2) sits second on the ladder.

While there is no TAC Cup action this weekend, the Rays and Power travel to Ballarat to face the Geelong Falcons and Murray Bushrangers, respectively, on Saturday 18 August from 10am.
