Sutto’s 60 years

By Kath Gannaway Inspiration, respect and dedication are a recurring theme when the CFA community speaks of Yarra Glen Fire Brigade's John Sutton.

Mr Sutton's 60 years of continuous service was recognised at the Yarra Glen Fire Brigade Annual Dinner on Saturday, 28 July, with a Life Membership in the CFA and the official naming of the John "Sutto" Sutton fire truck in his honour.

John joined the brigade when he was "about 17 or 18" along with three or four other young men from the district.

"We all decided to join together and I've stayed on," said John who served as Captain for 14 years, has held a number of other roles in the brigade over the years and is currently Communications Officer.

It's a typically humble response from a man who while acknowledging that his commitment is unusual in years, is just pleased to be playing his part in looking after his own Yarra Glen community, and at times others much further afield.

Yarra Glen CFA Captain Bill Boyd has been captain for the past 12 years and he says John's contribution to the brigade can't be underestimated.

"He's still getting down here every Sunday morning and he doesn't look like slowing down," he says.

"John is highly regarded and highly respected. His contribution over 60 years is inspirational and there are a lot of people in this community who just couldn't fathom that sort of commitment."

He said John had been to some major fires including Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday and said his experience and attitude to what it means to be part of a brigade makes him a great mentor to younger members.

Reflecting on changes over the past two decades, some divisive at the time, Captain Boyd said John had embraced change.

"John just said "let's get on board ... that's the way it is" and he has stuck with it. It's a credit to him."

He said there is a sense of satisfaction in being part of a team whose role is to help the community.

"It's not always fires, there are road acci-

dents, and other community service," he said.

"I think I've been able to help the community a bit."

Service awards were also presented to Felix Putting, Rohan Pelling and Jeff Rowan for five years service, Louise Higgins for 10 years and Ash Skillern and Neil Page for 15 years.

The awards were presented by District 13 Operations Officer, Tim Holland, and Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish.

According to the Healesville Historical Society, this letter addressed to the Shire of Healesville secretary and dated 27 March 1964, was buried among the centenary files.

TRIP a wake-up call

By Kath Gannaway "One young life lost on our roads is unacceptable. Three young lives lost every year ... please take a moment and just look around you. Are they here in the room tonight?"

Gruyere CFA volunteer Andrea Bigham was speaking to a room of around 500 people, many of them teenagers, at the 2018 Teenage Road Information Night (TRIP), held at Heritage & Heritage Funerals in Woori Yallock on Wednesday, 1 August.

The program, in its fifth year, is a combined response by Yarra Valley emergency services CFA, SES, Police and Ambulance to the tragic loss of young lives on Yarra Ranges' roads.

The target audience is 16 to 25 year-olds and their parents.

As in previous years, there was a warning that some of the content would be graphic, and some just plain heartbreaking - and it was.

Lilydale Police Sergeant Grant Fereday introduced the program which included guest speakers Paramedic Damian Callanan, Detective Sgt Mark Amos from the Major Collision Investigation Unit, Magistrate Tim Walsh and Sally Millar, the mother of Charlie Robertson who

died in a crash at Launching Place on 10 April, 2015.

Ms Bigham spoke of the statistics, worldwide, nationally and in Yarra Ranges.

She focused on dangerous driving behaviours of which she said speeding was the most alarming and prolific with 5236 speeding fines handed out in 2017.

Showing crash locations from 2012 to 2017 in the age group of 18 to 25 she said 372 families and friends in Yarra Ranges had been directly impacted.

"But more tragically, in the last three years, for every year we have lost three young lives," she said posing the rhetorical question "How as a community can we accept these numbers?"

"We need to make a change because road trauma statistics are preventable."

TRIP Chair and Hillcrest CFA Captain Fiona Burns also spoke about behaviour change and asked everyone in the room to make a written pledge to make a change.

"We're asking you to tick three boxes you are going to adopt as good driving behaviours, whether it's about speeding, using your mobile phone, about tailgating, drinking or en-

gaging in hoon behaviour," she said.

The pledges will be mailed back to each person in one month as a reminder of their commitment.

Cpt Burns urged people to speak up when they see driving behaviour that endangers life.

"I'd rather see you here tonight than out on a road somewhere because you need our services," she said.

"We will always come, even if we don't want to be there."

The four guest speakers also spoke about responsibility and consequences from very different and personal perspectives.

Their stories pulled together all the elements that start the ripple effect of road trauma that doesn't stop when the last ambulance leaves the scene, or when the MCIU detectives start measuring the glass-spattered road for braking speed, or in court when a magistrate or judge sums up what price to pay for a life, or when a mother tries to explain the unending pain and loss a family endures.

No kidding ... it’s trivia for a great cause

By Kath Gannaway The Milking Cow and Goat Project started by Healesville Rotarian Wilma Best in 2007 has resonated with successive groups of Healesville High Students in recent years.

A new group of Year 12 VCAL students has taken up the challenge of organising and running the annual Trivia Night which raises funds for the project.

The plight of children and families in the Kariakomo Compound in Kenya drove Wilma to start the project which supplies Toggenburg milking goats to the village.

The breed was chosen for their proven milk production of four litres of milk per day and fundraising and donations enabled the gift of 45 goats between 2010 and 2012.

"The target is 75 goats that would provide each village group consisting of a grandmother caring for up to 10 orphans - with one goat," Wilma said.

"We know that those groups who have received a milking goat to feed milk to children and have a little milk to sell, are doing very well. They treasure the goats as precious animals and the children assist in collecting goat food and water."

Student Kristin Kidd said it was a great project to be involved in from organising the venue and gathering prizes to coming up with the trivia questions and ensuring the technology is all in hand by the big night.

"It's a fantastic cause and helping other people, especially children, is great," Kristin said.

"To be helping someone like Wilma in the terrific work she does, and just getting out into the community is something that is really

Yarra Rangers CIU detectives are investigating a burglary at the BP service station in Healesville.

They've been told that thieves smashed the Maroondah Highway petrol station's front window just after 3am on Friday 3 August.

They stole a quantity of cigarettes and cash and left the scene in a light grey Ford Territory station wagon.

It was last seen travelling north on Crowley Road.

Deer shooting Warburton Police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson is urging members of the public to ring triplezero if they hear suspicious gunshots.

The call comes after what Sgt Wilkinson called a spate of deer shooting in the Yarra Valley, particularly in the Warburton, East Warburton and Gladysdale areas.

“We’re asking members of the community that if they hear any shots or see anything in respect to deer hunting to immediately call triple-zero,“ he said.

Sgt Wilkinson said those shooting illegally would face serious charges including conduct endangering life.

He said it was important that triple-zero callers provided as many details as possible.

“Where, when, if there’s any vehicles, if they can’t see the vehicle, the sound of the vehicle and if possible the direction of travel,“ he said.

Yarra Junction Police are looking to the public for assistance in relation to two late-model cars found burnt-out in Upper Yarra.

A silver Nissan Patrol valued at about $50,000 was recovered from the reserve under the powerlines that dissect GembrookLaunching Place Road in Hoddles Creek on Sunday 29 July.

On Wednesday 1 August, a silver Volkswagen Amarok dual-cab ute valued at about $40,000 was recovered from the Edwardstown Track off the Old Warburton Road in Wesburn.

The vehicles were driven to the locations and torched and police believe that in both instances the perpetrators would have had another vehicle to drive away from the area.

Police are asking anyone who saw vehicles fiting the descriptions in the area around those dates, possibly with another vehicle accompanying, or any other suspicious behaviour at those locations to call Yarra Junction Police on 5967 1104 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Saddle theft Police are keen to hear from anyone with information about a high-quality dressage saddle stolen from a horse float at Yarra Junction on Wednesday 1 August. The distinctive Kent and Masters saddle is black with electric-blue stirrups and is valued at about $4000.

Agri-business is so vital Without a shadow of a doubt, agriculture is vital to the ongoing strength and health of communities in the Yarra Valley.

In total, agriculture in our region provides a combined economic benefit of $818 million, providing nearly 2500 local jobs with thousands of extra seasonal jobs created during the harvest.

Whilst the accommodation and food sector is the largest employer in our region, that employment is underpinned by high-quality and sought-after produce that is grown locally.

Introduced plants and animals are responsible for costing millions of dollars in damage, control efforts and loss of production within the agricultural industry.

What’s more, these animals pose significant threats to biodiversity across our beautiful natural environment.

That is why I was particularly proud to announce that an elected Liberal Government will provide an additional $6.88 million over four years in a new weeds and pest animal enforcement taskforce which will be established in Agriculture Victoria.

The taskforce will strengthen compliance with Victorian laws and will support the hard work of landowners who already properly manage weeds and pest animals.

There are lots of local farmers who do the right thing, spend money and do the grunt work controlling weeds and pests on their properties but all that good work is undone if recalcitrant neighbours flout the laws.

Weeds and pests like rabbits can severely impact on productivity so it is critical that we do everything we can to support farmers, because profitable farm businesses are critical for local economies and jobs throughout the Yarra Valley.

Tribute of century

Vietnam Veterans march each year in commemoration.

He enlisted on 1 February 1916 at the Melbourne Town Hall, and later wrote to his wife that “I would rather die with a little wooden cross above my head than be one of those who could have gone and did not”.

He left Australia from Station Pier, Port Melbourne, aboard the HMAT Themistocles on 28 July 1916.

He joined the 22nd Battalion on the front line trenches on the Somme as the 1916-’17 winter started.

Frederick was wounded in the chest in January 1917 when a bomb from a rifle grenade exploded.

He spent most of 1917 recovering from his wounds in hospital before attending retraining and re-joining his unit in December.

In January he transferred to the 6th Field Company Engineers and was part of the force set up to defend Villers Bretonneaux.

A special march and service will honour the region's Vietnam War Veterans.

The Yarra Valley and Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Day will start with a march from the service road at 318 Maroondah Highway at 10.30am on Sunday 12 August.

A service at the Lilydale Cenotaph, corner Maroondah Highway and Clarke Road, will follow at 11am.

Lilydale RSL president Don Parsons will officiate proceedings and speakers will include Casey MP Tony Smith, Medal of the Order of Australia recipient Ken McKenzie and Aff Binnoore, who's president of the Vietnam Veterans Association Australia - Outer Eastern Melbourne Sub-branch.

Dandenong Ranges Music Council will perform an original song written for the Centenary of Anzac, called Forgotten Heroes.

On 1 August 1918 he was killed in action during an artillery barrage, aged 30.

Frederick is buried at the Villers Bretonneaux Military Cemetery in France.

It’s been 100 years since Frederick William Jeeves died on a battlefield in France.

Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness and member Bill Smart honoured the Montrose man with a brief but stirring service at the Montrose War Memorial on the anniversary of his death.

It’s a ritual the Mount Evelyn and Lilydale RSLs started to mark the Centenary of Anzac, back in 2014.

Mr Boness said they’d tried to track down and invite family members to each event, and some travelled from as far afield as Sydney to honour their ancestor’s sacrifice.

The RSLs will have paid tribute to about 60 soldiers by the time they wrap up in June next year, at war memorials in Montrose, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Yarra Glen, Silvan and Lilydale.

James Wallace and James Payne are up next up, at Wandin at 11am on 26 and 31 August respectively.

Mount Evelyn secretary Anthony McAleer said the final service would take place in Mount Evelyn and would honour a submariner.

He laid down on top of the submarine when it surfaced but fell asleep, and was killed when it resubmerged.

“In 1912 he’d joined the navy - he was one of the first in the area to enlist,” Mr McAleer said.

Frederick Jeeves’ death was far more brutal.

He was born in 1886 at Mount Dandenong.

In his late teens he drove the Mountain Mail and Passenger Coach from Mount Dandenong to Croydon .

He learnt all he could about the vehicle’s mechanics, decided to become a motor mechanic and opened his own garage in Montrose.

Frederick married Violet Vera Cazaly in 1913 and they had two daughters.

Call to ban ‘horrible’ poison A couple of days ago a little dog named Hilda suffered a truly horrific death from 1080 poisoning.

Her owner, a single lady who has lost most of her possessions to a conman, was absolutely distraught with the loss of her companion.

With lambing season fast approaching, farmers have to do what they can to protect their livelihood. In this instance the farmer had done the right thing with signs and personally contacting all neighbours.

This poison, however, is indiscriminate and, in this case, probably resulted from a carcass that had been dragged or died on our property and that the dog discovered.

I am no friend of the fox or the rabbit and only a week ago lost my complete coup of chooks to a fox. I have spent several years rabbit-proofing my house area as the only workable solution I could come up with to combat the massive damage caused by the rabbit plague.

With the constant push for growth comes the desire for quick solutions to problems often without due concern to collateral damage.

DDT, Agent Orange and asbestos come to mind as examples of accepted solutions to problems only to be found to have far-reaching, unacceptable consequences.

Surely it is time we follow most of the rest of the world and ban 1080 and force the market and governments to come up with a far more acceptable solution to the control of these pests.

The repercussion both directly and to friends and family of this one small incident when replicated all over the country surely provides sufficient evidence to ban this horrible substance.

Help for homeless able to chat to people with an Anchor worker present, who will be able to offer support and some intensive case management to help get them back on their feet."

Cr Cox said Homelessness Week, which runs during the first week of August, was a reminder that anyone in the community could experience homelessness.

"The issue of homelessness in the Yarra Ranges may not be completely hidden anymore, but there is still a stigma against people who are experiencing homelessness," he said.

"The reality is that homelessness can affect people of all ages, genders, backgrounds and family situations.

"People also need to remember that those

who are homeless or sleeping rough are just as entitled to be in public places and participate in public activities and events as anyone else in our community.

"We have to all work together and support one another to find the best way to help our community members while also breaking the cycle that can push people out onto the streets."

The council's partnership with Anchor will be funded through a four-year Community Partnership Grant, awarded last year.

State Liberal Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP has called on the Victorian Government to fund the proposed Warburton Community Recreation Precinct.

She took the opportunity also to call the State Government to task over what she said was a lack of investment in the Yarra Ranges under the Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF).

"Yarra Ranges Shire has only received $7.5 million, and only $625,000 is actually being invested in my electorate. Next door in the Deputy-Premier's seat of Monbulk, $4.473 million has been invested".

"It is interesting if we compare other municipalities close by: Nillumbik has had over $16 million and Whittlesea has had $20 million," Ms McLeish concluded.

Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino however has responded saying the Yarra Ranges area had received $8,307,000 through the GSF. "I am very proud to say that our Yarra Ranges community has received more than $8 million through this fund," Mr Merlino said.

"It's surprising to hear Cindy McLeish complaining about the funding we are now receiving, given that under the Liberals this area was ignored and our facilities simply couldn't keep up," he said.

"Projects are decided on merit and need, not political boundaries."

Speaking in the Victorian Parliament, Ms McLeish called on the Local Government Minister to release funds under the GSF to make the Warburton project a reality.

"This is much needed and highly anticipated, and the project is shovel ready. The site selected is that of the former Warburton swimming pool, and that pool and surrounds have been earmarked for recreation space for quite some time," she said.

The outgoing Yarra Ranges Council CEO says housing, roads and drainage will be among the biggest challenges for his replacement.

Glenn Patterson announced on Wednesday 25 July that he'd be leaving his job of the past 10 years to take on the same role at the City of Casey.

"I still have the energy and the commitment, but 10 years is a decent stint in a role like this," he said.

"It's good for me and the organisation to have a change."

Mr Patterson said his replacement would implement a change to "activity-based working" when the council relocated to its new headquarters and that was "a key challenge".

"There'll be all sorts of issues in terms of medium-density housing coming into urban area," he said.

But there's also opportunity for investment in the Upper Yarra, including through the

"We've invested heavily in technology and digital initiatives to improve our interaction with our customers," he said.

He said the council had also increased its capital works delivery, to a record $72 million this year.

The region is now second in the state for visitation, up from fourth place 10 years ago.

The new civic office is one of the projects he wished he could have seen through - it was on the radar when he arrived.

"It's not been the most popular project," he said.

But Mr Patterson said it would make a huge difference for the community and employees.

People sleeping rough will have better and quicker access to support services thanks to a partnership between Yarra Ranges Council and Anchor.

They'll work together on a new rapid response model to help people sleeping rough in the shire.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said that Anchor housing support workers would be able to accompany council officers to offer support for people experiencing homelessness.

"We previously could hand out some information about services, but that left rough sleepers in the place of having to get in touch and organise an appointment," he said.

Lighting up at show time Warburton shone during the River of Light Winter Festival on Saturday 4 August.

The event took place at the Arts Centre Warburton and along the Yarra River as the sun set on an icy winter's day.

Spectacular lanterns starred, but the free family festival also included a seasonal community dinner, live music and kids activities.

The aim was to showcase Warburton's beauty and celebrate the local community, businesses, producers and growers The night had support from Bendigo Community Bank Warburton and Yarra Junction, Yarra Ranges Council, and Auspicious Arts Projects.

Training critical for firefighters to beat back the blazes

By Kath Gannaway Ross Johnson has no doubt that the training CFA recruits sign up for when they join a brigade is not only critical for their wellbeing and safety, but makes for better brigades.

Twelve recruits representing brigades from Wandin and Gruyere through to Reefton graduated from the 16-week training module at the Warburton CFA station on Sunday 22 July.

"This is the module that allows them to turn out," said Mr Johnson who as Group Training Officer for Yarra Valley Group delivers the training that covers safety and survival theory, equity and diversity, and combat fire modules including map reading and communications.

"This is probably the biggest training module they are ever going to do and because we're putting these people into harm's way, I make sure the teaching is well above the assessment profile," he said.

"So much of what we do can be dangerous; If you go out to a road crash and hold up a stop sign, or put out an incinerator, everything we ask our volunteers to do has the potential to put them in harm's way so we go that extra mile to make sure they understand that, and have a broader understanding of everything that's involved.

The importance and value of the extensive training is not lost on the volunteers.

Lily Pagels, 18, from Hoddles Creek Fire Brigade, came up through junior brigade while Yellingbo CFA member, Marianne Thomson, 37 and a working mother of three primary school children, is a relatively new recruit.

"You'd be lost without the training," said Marianne who joined when the family built a house in Yellingbo.

"I guess I'm a bit of a tomboy and I wanted to get in there and help; I wanted to be part of the community and learn new skills.

"I've learnt so many personal skills already, things you can use in your daily life apart from those to do with the brigade," she said.

Lily joined Hoddles Creek when she was about 11. She said her dad was in the brigade and a family friend, Leonie Turner, is leader of the juniors.

Thirty years in full voice

By Casey Neill The Yarra Valley Singers have been sharing tunes and forging friendships for 30 years.

They'll perform at Healesville Memo Hall on Sunday 12 August to mark the milestone.

Shirley Wendt was at the group's first rehearsal in 1988 after friends encouraged her to get involved.

She lived overseas for a time but has been back in the group for the past decade.

Husband and wife Don and Jeanette Box also joined to sing with friends, during the choir's first year.

"I was in the church choir and that was the only singing I'd done before I came to this," Don said.

He's known as the librarian, as he looks after the extensive sheet music collection.

"There's always something new. There's always something different to learn," he said.

Musical director Belinda Gillam Derry first joined the singers in 1996.

She stepped aside in 2007 due to illness, but returned in 2012.

"I get a real boost out of singing," she said.

"To be able to share that with lots of other people is an absolute joy.

"It's really good for boosting people's moods."

She said her singers had ailments ranging from depression and anxiety to a double lung

Ms Gillam Derry said they couldn't necessarily participate in physical activity but found a valuable social outlet in singing.

She said the concert program would in-

clude the group's most significant and favourite works from the past three decades.

"The program includes early music, classical, folk, pop, show tunes and new works which were written specifically for Yarra Valley Singers," she said.

The evening choir meets in Lilydale on Wednesday nights has about 80 members.

A daytime choir formed in March this year and already has about 30 singers at rehearsals at Montrose Town Centre each Tuesday.

Ms Gillam Derry hopes this will grow to 50.

"The daytime choir was established specifically to cater for people who would like to keep or start singing in a choir, but may not want to be driving to rehearsals at night any more," she said.

Yarra Ranges Council this year awarded Grants for Community funding to the Yarra Valley Singers to record a CD and present the performance program covering the best of the past 29 years.

The group recently secured four-year funding through the council's Partnership Program, which will support the group to continue and grow their work within the community until at least 2022.

The performance will start at 1pm and afternoon tea in the foyer will follow.

Tickets are $22 for adults, $18 concession and free for under-16s, though they still need to book a seat.

Art All Around Us - inside the mindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye of Alexander

Alexander Pinkster's view of life and the world around him will go on show as part of his 'Art All Round Us' exhibition at The Memo in Healesville from 17 August to 25 September.

Alexander is a relative newcomer to the Yarra Valley, and in fact, but to a lesser degree, to painting.

In the vibrant and eclectic collection of 15 works that will go on show at The Memo, there is influence from past occupations, and from his new natural environment.

His art is about colour and the interplay between man-made objects and organic shapes.

Black lines either accentuate or link the colours and shapes creating an harmonious balance between the three elements.

Throughout his paintings, he aims for a symmetry that is pleasing to the eye and calming to the spirit.

Alexander says ideas for his works come from within, but inspiration comes from his immediate environment and surroundings.

Art All Around Us opens on Saturday, 18 August at 2pm.

The Cloverfield Paradox is what happens when sloppy execution clogs up a solid foundation.

In a future beset by severe energy shortages, the crew of the Cloverfield space station find themselves marooned in another universe after testing their state-of-the-art Shepard particle accelerator.

The Cloverfield Paradox has solid performances and arresting imagery within a contrived, undisciplined plot, jarring editing and gravely mismatched tones.

Despite being grossly underwritten, the characters are still enlivened by the actors' charisma, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as communications officer Ava Hamilton, delivers a sombre, powerful central performance. The

film moves at a swift pace, but spends little time dwelling on each shocking detail, which dilutes the tension of the astronauts' ordeal.

A tense thriller about astronauts being adrift in another dimension would have been enough, but The Cloverfield Paradox veers into pointless body horror at several points. The horror moments are visceral and confronting on their own, but make absolutely no sense within the film's own poorly-defined rules. The film also has an extraneous sub-plot involving Ava's husband (Roger Davies) on Earth, which serves only to flimsily connect this film with the original 2008 Cloverfield film.

Well-acted and entertaining in chunks, The Cloverfield Paradox is a disjointed, poorlywritten whole.

Division one has four sides sitting in equal top position (Olinda, Upwey, Woori Yallock & Wandin) with a total of 24.03 per cent separating them.

The remaining four rounds are now vitally important.

You would think the spot for fifth is only between Healesville, Mount Evelyn and Monbulk.

Division two has Seville one game clear on top, Yarra Glen three games clear in second, Yarra Junction are safe in third.

The battle is between Gembrook, Alexandra and Yea for fourth and fifth with three rounds to go.

They kicked another eight goals in the second to take a lead into the main break of 58 points.

Kinglake ran them down in the second and the difference was only four points at half time. Kinglake outscored Powelltown in the third, but Powelltown went into the last with a two-point lead.

Warburton Golf Club results

Weekend warriors

By Jamie Strudley Several of the tougher members of Yarra Ranges Athletics made the long drive up to Ballarat for a race around Lake ‘Windoree’ - Wendouree - on Saturday 4 August.

They were greeted with cloudy skies, strong icy wind and an understanding of why we only had a small team for this meet!

The juniors had to complete one lap of the lake (6 kilometres).

Harry Norman kicked Yarra Ranges Athletics off to a great start with second overall and Madeline Laven proved that broken bones couldn’t stop her, with a close-fought second place in the girls under-14.

Next up was the open men and women who had to complete two full laps plus an out and back.

This meant three times running into a headwind that felt more like a brick wall.

Seamus Dwyer lead Yarra Ranges Athletics home with a strong performance despite initial worries that he might not make it to the start, as his little pink watch couldn’t pick up satellites.

Next in was Michael Clarke, who rose to the tough conditions and stormed through the field after lap one.

Lauren Starr was first lady, despite sufferring with a stomach ache - next time she should follow coach’s advice and find a tree a puke behind it.

James Anderson completed his first long run since the Gold Coast marathon and ran a controlled effort.

Andy Searles made the wise call to pull out at 7km with a sore foot, although there are suspicions as this happened to be at the time his girlfriend passed him.

Graham Coutts put in a strong effort despite a dodgy knee and the ever-consistent Bryan Ackerly was right behind him.

Georgia Brock had a fantastic run, completing her longest road race in well under goal time and beating coach in the process.

Jamie Strudley dodged a bullet and made it in under 70 minutes, confirming that he wouldn’t be hanging up the racing flats any day soon.

Craig Hewitson rounded out the men’s team in stirling fashion, continuing his triumphant return to racing.

Laura DiGregorio had a sensational run and Katie Clarke was just behind.

A little more sun and less wind would be nice for next round at Anglesea in two weeks.

The rest of the Yarra Ranges athletes headed to Cockatoo to compete for the annual Hills Challenge trophy.

The prestigious silverware has been with the club for the past four years.

The weather had been kind to the venue so, by and large, the course was steady under foot.

The late night rain did make some parts slippery.

The event includes five races, from 500 metres to 3km, and each runner can run as many races as they want to help accrue points for their club along the way.

Yarra Ranges had at least 50 runners, but many of its older and more experienced runners were away on other events and the club finished second to Pakenham.

The Saturday 4 August contest was stroke again, with fine weather but sloppy course conditions and variable greens following overnight rain.

The winner was Paul Kennedy (12) 70 and runner-up was Vahagn Sargsyan.

Nearest to pins was Ossie McClay on the third, Paul Kennedy on the fifth, Allan Hubbard the ninth, David Murch on the 12th and Darren Wyatt the 15th.
