Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea says he won’t be silenced by a death-threat letter that he believes comes from the top of the Cambodian Government. Cr Chea as well as Greater Dandenong councillor Heang Tak and outgoing Clarinda MP Hong Lim were named in the letter - which is being investigated by Victoria Police. The letter was typed in English and delivered to the Springvale offices of Cambodian Association of Victoria headed by Cr Chea several months ago. It warned that the three local politicians would be killed like critical political commentator Kem Ley - who was gunned down at a petrol station cafe in 2016. Cr Chea says they have been targeted for being outspoken against long-time Cambodian Prime Minister and former Khmer Rouge commander Hun Sen - who was re-elected in a “fake election“ on 29 July. “For me I just want Cambodia to have freedom and democracy.” It was an unprecedented international threat to local political leaders, Cr Chea said. “I’d never heard of something like this even during the Khmer Rouge days. “It’s so evil. It’s coming from the top, from the (Hun Sen) regime itself.” The letter also threatened Dr Ley’s wife Bou Rachana. She and her five children were granted a special humanitarian visa by Australia in February. The letter’s author warned that he had a wife in Australia, so nothing could stop him coming to Australia to enact his threat, Cr Chea said. He says cashed-up “bad people”and generals from Cambodia have been allowed visas and have been destabilising Cr Chea’s “nonpolitical” association since April. “Those people just wanted to intimidate me and make me scared (before the association’s election in May).” At a recent mayoral roundtable to support refugees against impending welfare cuts, Cr Chea told of himself fleeing Cambodia’s ‘Kill-

Ghandi statue is toppled By Cam Lucadou-Wells A community survey has overwhelmingly rejected a proposed statue of Mahatma Ghandi in Dandenong's Indian cultural precinct. The idea floated a statue of Gandhi, who led India's independence movement 70 years ago, as well as a second statue of a 12th century "philosopher, statesman, poet and social reformer". Greater Dandenong Council received 963 responses to its survey in four weeks - with 87 per cent from an Indian or Indian subcontinent background. About 65 per cent were against the Gandhi proposal. "We consulted with the community on this issue and the community have told us that a statue would not be in the best interests of the precinct," mayor Youhorn Chea said. The survey was initiated by the Indian Cultural Precinct Taskforce. After the survey results, it concluded there was not enough community support for statues of Gandhi or of any type. A taskforce member Vasan Srinavasan, who runs Museum India, proposed the statue in the Journal in 2014. It was backed by then Multicultural Affairs Minister - now Opposition Leader - Matthew Guy for a berth at Settlers Square at the time. Mr Srinavasan said it would have been a "drawcard" to the precinct that had albeit "changed a bit for the better" in recent years. About 12,400 first-generation Indian residents live in Greater Dandenong - with more than 52,000 in the South East region. A temporary mural of Ghandi had been created near the precinct by Melbourne artist Julian Clavijo in May. It coincided with a digital exhibition at Melbourne's Immigration Museum.

Bets off on pokies reform By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Government has defended its pokies regulations despite an alliance's proposed reforms to stem the mounting losses. The Alliance of Gambling Reform - including Greater Dandenong Council - recently called for reduced opening hours, lower maximum bets and lower ATM withdrawal limits at pokies venues. Greater Dandenong leads the state for percapita pokies losses, with $120 million spent in 2017-18. Under a regional cap, the council area is home to 957 machines. Three months ahead of a State election, Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Marlene Kairouz defended the Government's problem gambling measures. They include a YourPlay pre-commitment system for pokies gamblers and freezing poker machine numbers until 2042. "We are freezing pokies numbers across the state, limiting daily cash withdrawals in venues and capping the number of pokies in areas most vulnerable to gambling harm," Ms Kairouz said. "We know how insidious problem gambling can be - that's why we're helping those who
choose to gamble stick to their limits." The State Opposition didn't respond to Star News's enquiries before deadline. The alliance seeks reducing maximum bets from $2 to $1, reducing venue opening hours from 20 to 14 hours a day, and reducing venue ATM withdrawls from $500 to $200 a day. Greater Dandenong Cr Matthew Kirwan said the Government and Oppositon were "clearly concerned more about protecting pokie venues not people". He questioned why more poker machines weren't redistributed from low income, multicultural areas such as Greater Dandenong. "But again that would disadvantage venues (by being) further away from vulnerable gamblers. "Limiting EFTPOS withdrawals to $500 per card per day means up to $182,500 could be withdrawn per card per year. Hardly a 'restriction'." Community Clubs Victoria recently stated the AGR didn't acknowledge the "clear majority of recreational gamblers do not have a problem with their gambling". "It is hard to see how limitations on trading hours would not have a negative impact on employment in the local area."

IN BRIEF Commuter robbed near Dandy station
Police refuse bait Police chose not to pursue a 14-year-old driver who sped through heavy traffic and red lights during a two-hour joyride in Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Springvale, Dandenong and Moordialloc, a childrens court heard. The stolen car was not pursued due to the boy’s age, but was instead tracked by a police Air Wing helicopter from about 1pm on Tuesday, 10 July, a police prosecutor said. The car was seen driving across median strips, on the wrong side of roads, weaving between vehicles and speeding at more than 100km/h in a 60 km/h zone, police said. Police received multiple calls from people witnessing the erratic driving, the court heard. The boy and three other male occupants were arrested when they stopped at a shopping centre that afternoon. It was “unbelievably dangerous” driving that put “possibly hundreds” of people at risk, a magistrate said on 30 July. “It’s rare that you get multiple people ringing police about bad driving. “I’m taking from that there were examples
of very, very bad driving.” The juvenile was also accused of three petrol drive-offs and using stolen credit cards to buy more than $100 of take-away food and $410 of X-Box Live and PlayStation cards in late June-early July. A magistrate noted that the boy was “running amok” on the same June morning that his parents and a school’s staff sought a meeting with him. They were trying to get him to return to school. The boy’s abstinence had led to him having “too much time on his hands”, the magistrate said. “I’m under the impression he’s not coping at school and this is the age he will play up. “The risk is he’s going to get his self-esteem from criminal offending because what else is he doing?” The judge said the school needed to provide more “buy in” instead of “pushing back” on the boy going there. “They have an obligation, I would have thought.” The boy had a “complex” background with
“significant trauma” in the home, the judge noted. He had been otherwise complying with bail but engaging in “risk-taking behaviour”. The boy was bailed on a deferred sentence, with a stern warning not to drive or put others at risk of being hurt. “If it doesn’t work and he re-offends, he’s likely to be looking at a term of detention. “If needs be, the only way to really protect the community is to detain him until he matures.” The magistrate told the boy he had support from family, Youth Justice, the Department of Education and a youth service. The boy was bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date. A Victoria Police spokesperson declined to comment on pursuits policy. "In order to protect the integrity and confidentiality of the pursuit policy, and considerations around compromising operational methodology and police safety, Victoria Police does not proactively discuss the details of the Victoria Police pursuit policy."
Mayors’ urgent call for refugee support By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "powerful" joint statement by 18 Victorian councils opposing imminent cuts to asylumseekers' income support has apparently failed to move the Federal Government. Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the statement drafted at a mayoral roundtable at Dandenong Civic Centre on 31 July was a "powerful show of support" for people seeking asylum and refugees. It was a collective call for the Australian Government to urgently reverse its plans to remove potentially thousands of asylum seekers from $35-a-day Status Resulation Support Services payments. In Greater Dandenong, there are 2000 residents seeking asylum. The forum was told that most of them were likely to be affected, starting from this month. "We are all very concerned for the welfare of people seeking asylum and the impact these changes will have, not only financially, but also on their health and wellbeing," Cr Chea said. A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs responded to Star News that the SRSS program "is not a social welfare program". "It is designed to provide short-term, tailored support to those who have demonstrated barriers to resolving their immigration status. "Individuals on a bridging visa with work rights, and who have the capacity to work, are expected to support themselves while their immigration status is being resolved."Assessments of recipients eligibility are underway." Motorcyclist hurt on Stud Road A motorcyclist is fighting for life after a crash with a car on the corner of Stud and Heatherton roads, Dandenong. Police are investigating the crash, which happened about 8.10am on 31 July. The male in his twenties was taken to The Alfred Hospital with critical head injuries and a suspected broken pelvis, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said. A woman in her twenties was taken to Monash Medical Centre in a stable condition with back injuries, she said. Stud Road's southbound lanes were closed to traffic between Monash Freeway and Heatherton Road until about 1pm.

A woman has beaten off a would-be robber in a Dandenong car park at night. The 25-year-old had got off a bus at Clow Street and walked across the car park towards Dandenong Plaza about 7pm on 25 July. A man grabbed her by the arm and demanded her phone. She kicked the man and ran from the scene, reporting the incident to Dandenong police station. The man was described as 20 years, Caucasian, 180 centimetres and wearing dark grey tracksuit pants and a dark-blue hoodie. Street robbery by knife-point A man has fled from armed robbers in Close Avenue, Dandenong early on 27 July. The 19-year-old was approached by two males as he walked on the avenue about 3.25am. One of the assailants snatched the victim’s i-Phone, produced a knife and demanded him to “give us your money”. The victim fled the scene, and later reported the matter to police. He described the robbers as being of African appearance. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating the incident.

A train commuter has been robbed by males armed with a baseball bat as he walked to his car near Dandenong railway station on the evening of 26 July. About 7.50pm, the 22-year-old man was approached by two men from the other side of Railway Parade near Pickett Street. One of the men lifted their top, revealing the bat tucked into his pants. The victim complied with a demand to hand over "everything he had, including his backpack", Senior Constable Chris Ryan of Greater Dandenong CIU said. He fled after the second male claimed he was armed with an unseen knife. The robbers headed east towards Foster Street. The first offender was described as African, wearing a black jumper, black jeans, Adidas shoes and a large tattoo on his neck. The other male was described as African, wearing a green jumper with a 'Supreme' logo. Transit CIU police are investigating the robbery.

Is Dandenong Hospital's performance rising or falling? Well, it depends on how you read the justreleased official hospital performance data. The Government points to performance gains in elective surgery and ambulance responses over the past three months. But things have worsened in the emergency department since four years ago, the Opposition says. Since March, the hospital's elective surgery waiting list, has shrunk from 1446 to 1360, states the Government. Elective surgery admissions were up, with 100 per cent of urgent-category patients seen within the 30-day benchmark. Most were within seven days. The average ambulance response times to Code One emergencies has hastened from 10 minutes, 42 seconds to 9 minutes, 40 seconds in the past year, the Government claims. "Elective waiting lists are shrinking and ambulances are arriving faster to Code One

emergencies in Dandenong faster," Health Minister Jill Hennessey said. "The Liberals cut a billion dollars from health and went to war with paramedics - performance data was so bad that they stopped releasing it." However the Opposition states emergency department waiting times remain short of the state's benchmark. Since 2014, waiting times in the emergency department were up from nine minutes to 19, they say. About 4700 people waited longer than clinically recommended for emergency treatment at Dandenong Hospital in the last quarter. Elective surgery patients are waiting two weeks longer than in 2014. "These aren't just figures, they're people's lives," opposition health spokeswoman Mary Wooldridge said. "Daniel Andrews has failed to make the investment needed at Dandenong Hospital to ensure patients can access care in a timely manner."

A Cranbourne man has been chastised by a magistrate for involving his two-year-old son while shoplifting from a Bunnings store. The 24-year-old concealed $676 of outdoor lights in his son's pram during a family trip to the Springvale store on 29 July, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. "It doesn't get much lower than using your own child as cover," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said. "What does that say about your moral compass? "He's an innocent child." The boy would look up to the accused as his "role model", Mr Vandersteen said. "Do you think he'll grow up to think it's OK to go in a shop and steal?" The man was also in breach of a full intervention order barring him from being near his girlfriend and child at the time, as well as in breach of bail and a corrections order. In June, the man breached the order by attending the girlfriend's home to "say goodbye before he got clean", the court heard. He also pleaded guilty to smashing two of her phones, punching two holes in her home's walls and calling her abusive names despite
the intervention order in March. At one point, the partner picked up her son to prevent the man from hitting her, the court was told. He later told police that he'd "flipped it" after the partner called him names for not getting up from bed. Defence lawyer Nick Power said it "flies in the face" with what the man had been learning at his men's behaviour change course. "It appears that drug use has played some part. "He tells me he doesn't want to expose his son to the things he's managed to do so far. He wants to put a stop to it. "He doesn't have the maturity or the facility to do that without help." Magistrate Vandersteen said the man had "very high" compliance with his corrections order until he "dropped off" in April, Mr Vandersteen said. "And then you got into trouble." The man was convicted and placed on a supervised corrections order with judicial monitoring, drug testing and mental health treatment. He was ordered to pay $1300 restitution for the property damage.

They took part in exuberant African drumming, stretched into yoga and drama, and got a pep-talk from mental health professional Bryan Jeffrey and motivational speaker Shabnam Safa. Zohre says the lessons accord with what her parents have always told her.

The theme of this year's summit run by Greater Dandenong Council was 'Better Together'. Its activities promoted resilience, community connectedness, identity and belonging. For some Doveton College students, it was their first touch of an Aussie Rules football and it was intoxicating. Brownlow medallist Simon Black and players at his Simon Black Academy won over the students during a football clinic on 27 July. Many of the kids - from all corners of the world - hadn't been to an AFL game or seen it on TV, Doveton College community engagement coordinator Alan McCarthy said. "They loved it. It's given a buzz all around the school for the past week. Fireys fly in to help out By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three CFA fireys from Dandenong and Hallam have been deployed to tackle devastating fires in the USA and Greece. Steve Keating, Adrian Devenish and Daryl Owen are among a contingent of 16 CFA, Parks Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning officers who flew out from Melbourne on 2 August. Mr Keating, a Senior Station Officer at Hallam CFA, will be deployed as a divisional commander at USA's besieged west coast fires in Oregan, Washington State and California. He performed the same role tackling fires, removing hazard trees and repairing fire grounds in the Napa Valley in the US last October. "I feel apprehensive about this deployment, as I did last year. "Not about where we are going, or what we will be doing. It is more about how I am able to assist people in the towns we visit to overcome their current situations, and return them to a normal or as normal as possible life." In answering the call, the 29-year CFA veteran leaves behind a supportive wife and two teenage boys. "I'm missing a Deb Ball this weekend and my very kind neighbour is looking over our newly arrived lambs." Mr Devenish, who is Senior Station Officer at
Dandenong CFA, also felt a little anxious ahead of his first international deployment to the US. He has been a career firefighter since 2001, including 15 years at Dandenong and deployments across the state. "I leave behind my family ... a supportive wife and three children that I will miss for the anticipated 42 days. "But I am looking forward to the opportunity and challenge." Mr Owen, a Senior Station Officer at Dandenong, is helping with damage assessments in the wake of the Greek fires. It is also his first international mission, away from his wife and daughter. He said he'd use the experience to help with Urban Search and Rescue responses to bushfires at home. "These deployments are great opportunity to gain an understanding of other agencies and countries and their disaster response, which we can then use to further develop our own response." CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said the deployments continued a proud and important CFA tradition. "CFA crews have extensive experience with large wildfires, having handled fires on similar terrain across Australia. "Our firefighters are ideally placed to provide additional surge capacity to our American counterparts during this trying time."

A man that police wish to speak to in relation to a Narre Warren carjacking. She was approached by two men from the four wheel drive where police allege one of the men produced a handgun and demanded her keys. “When she refused initially the male with the firearm has hit her with what we believe to be the butt of the firearm in the mouth,” Detective Sgt Higgins said. The two men, described as African in appearance, got into the victim’s car and drove away. The victim received minor facial injuries. Police have released CCTV footage in Dandenong North related to a mother being recently carjacked at gunpoint in Narre Warren. The victim’s car - a white VW Golf R - was seen driven with false number plates on Stud Road about 9am on 28 July. As police tried to intercept, the car sped away along a service lane. Soon after, it was involved in a crash with another car on the corner of Stud and Brady roads. No one was injured in the collision. The VW was found abandoned in a driveway with a man fleeing the scene. The CCTV footage is of a man in his 20s and Asian in appearance loitering in a home driveway and using his phone. He takes several steps up the driveway, looks up towards the home’s camera and then flees on foot. Southern Metro Region Crime Team detectives say they haven’t established whether the man was involved in the carjacking on Harrington Drive, Narre Warren just after 9pm on 26 July. The victim, a 57-year-old Narre Warren South woman, was rear-ended by a fourwheel-drive as she travelled along the drive. Detective Sergeant Dean Higgins, of Victoria Police, said the woman got out of her car to exchange details with the driver.

Big change WHAT’S IN A
NAME Abbotts Road is set to be soon rid of its notorious level crossing, thanks to the installation of a new rail bridge. The east-west industrial thoroughfare was named after a prominent and active former councillor John Abbott and wife Ellen. They moved to a property off Frankston Road shortly after they married in 1897. "Abbotts Lane off Frankston Road was named in our honour," Mrs Abbott told the Dandenong Journal on her 90th birthday in May, 1962. Shortly after moving into Abbotts Lane, Mr and Mrs Abbott were back in town, living on Kingsbury's corner - the corner of
Walker and McCrae streets. In 1910, they again moved into their longterm home 'Thrimby' at 6 Mason Street. That's where John died aged 71 in 1938. Mr Abbott was a Dandenong councillor, including Shire President in 1912 and 1918. He was also a Water Trust Commissioner and a member of the local Hospital Committee. He was known for his progressive ideas, including successfully pushing for the installation of electricity in Dandenong. Mrs Abbott, nee Griffiths, had arrived in Dandenong in a Cobb & Co coach as a baby with her parents in 1872. "(I) attended the first public school opposite what became the train station," she told the Journal in 1962. "The school shifted for safety reasons away from the train line to its current location in Foster Street. The site of the town hall was a swamp where my father shot wild ducks for the table."

Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the sixth annual Springvale Snow Fest once again proved one of the biggest events on the local calendar. “It is a tourism drawcard for the area, attract-

Jobs boost for bus builder Dandenong will be building a new fleet of 15 buses linking Melbourne Airport as a result of a new State Government contract with SkyBus. Local manufacturer Volgren will build the additional SkyBuses, which will run on extra routes linking Melbourne's suburbs to the airport. The state-of-the-art additions will be equipped with USB powered portals and Wifi. On 27 July, Volgren chief executive Peter Dale said the "order book certainty" would help the company invest in skilled jobs in the South East. "This order will help showcase our great buses to an even wider market." Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said

SkyBus chief executive Adam Bugg said the company would boost its service frequency and improve connectivity to outer urban areas. Energy cost under fire By Cam Lucadou-Wells Curbing high energy prices is in the sights of the South East's peak manufacturers body. Adrian Boden, executive director of South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance, told SEMMA's AGM at the Australian Synchrotron on 31 July that "nothing has really changed" on energy costs. "It remains one of the key areas where every single person in the country is affected. "We have no solution presented by our politicians as such." He told an audience of 250, including state and federal MPs, that a reasonable energy price ought to be a "bipartisan" issue. A local collective agreement on electricity
had cut costs down by 30 per cent, but they had still doubled in the past several years. SEMMA's wishlist included the urgent rollout of the National Broadband Network, skills education and enforcing local-content rules for government projects. He said more should be done to ensure external contractors meet the local-content benchmark - so "what is promised is what is delivered". Mr Boden praised the imminent removal of Abbotts Road level crossing in Dandenong South's industrial zone. "It will relieve a huge amount of traffic travel time at that particular crossing." He reminded the crowd that manufacturing directly employed 100,000 across Australia.

It's Greater Dandenong Council's new swanky $600,000 toilet block that is slowly taking shape. At a recent council meeting, a council director said it didn't look like there was a lot of recent progress. But a lot of preparatory work was being done due to the "complex" architectural design, he said. This included many samples being undertaken to get the colour, texture and surfaces absolutely right. "We've got that sorted out so we will now see some rapid progress."

Seems that citizens and Greater Dandenong Council are on the same page on one thing. At a recent council low-waste community forum in Noble Park, one of the bright ideas was for the council to collect organic waste. Lo and behold, less than a week later, the Federal Government announces $38 million towards a south-east organics processing facility in Dandenong South. It turns out Greater Dandenong is one of eight Melbourne councils using the plant to turn 120,000 tonnes of food and organic waste into high-grade compost. The forum's other Eight Melbourne councils are set to reduce the amount of food and organic waste they send to landfill, thanks to a new composting facility supported by the Turnbull Government. Other bright ideas from the low-waste forum included the council publishing tips on how to reduce waste and encouraging the use of calico shopping bags. There were also options such as tying council charges to how much waste you produce, and better waste education for multicultural communities. Convener Cr Matthew Kirwan said these ideas will be considered by the council.

Sugars in food and drinks eaten are taken up by bacteria, producing acids that attack the outer layer of tooth enamel to cause decay. one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help prevent tooth decay. Making water the beverage of choice and regularly sipping it throughout the day, including with and right after meals, makes a real difference to the health of teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum (and that's the crucial qualifier, it must be sugar-free!) may not be the first thing that springs to mind when people think about good dietary habits to benefit their teeth. But studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating can prompt mouths to produce more saliva, which helps neutralise decaycausing acid attacks. However, before people make any dietary changes, particularly if they have any ongoing medical conditions, it's best to first check with a health professional. Rangers’ stars recognised By Hayley Wildes Last Wednesday night was a chance to celebrate the SEABL and Victorian Youth Championship (VYC) seasons of the Dandenong Rangers'. Despite both SEABL squads missing out on finals action, some brilliant individual seasons stood out. For the SEABL men, captain Lucas Barker was named Rangers MVP after an incredible season. Having already claimed SEABL's Golden Hands award - awarded to the leagueleader in assists - Barker's consistent season was again recognised. As well as dishing out a SEABL career-high 6.2 assists per game, Barker also added 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds. Whilst his stats are eye-catching, it is the way in which he plays his basketball - a team-first mentality and ruthless competitiveness - that truly sets him apart. Puoch Puoch was awarded the Coaches Award in a season of tremendous growth. Puoch started the season as a role player coming off the bench, but forced his way into the starting line-up with his exciting play. The forward proved that he belongs at SEABL level and will be one to keep an eye in the future after averaging 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds per game and shooting an impressive 48.8 percent on threes. Dandenong veteran big man Tim Lang was awarded the Player's Player Award for another fine season. Lang averaged 9.4 points and 5 rebounds per game. The SEABL women were led all season by Tayla Roberts, while some young guns stood up also. Roberts was awarded Rangers MVP honours after a season of domination. She took her game to the next level, averaging SEABL
career-highs in points (18 per game) and rebounds (10.6), while adding 2.1 assists per game. Rising star Kiera Rowe was awarded the Coaches Award. After averaging 4.8 points in 12 SEABL games in 2017, Rowe stepped up on offence this season, more than doubling her output to 10.2 points and adding three rebounds per game. Bec Pizzey is another whose star continues to rise and claimed the Player's Player Award. Pizzey was a vital player and played big minutes down the stretch of the season. Averages of 8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game highlight her impact on both ends of the court. The VYC men had a stunning regular season, claiming the most wins in the competition and finishing with a record of 17-5. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the first round of finals by Hawthorn. Despite that disappointment, their play throughout the regular season was sublime. Mitchell Barry was awarded Rangers MVP after averaging 13.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. James Spencer was awarded the Coaches Award, while Ben Pike took out the Player's Player Award. The VYC women endured a tough season and finished with a record of 8-14. In the face of adversity, it was a season of growth for many players. Felicity Hilford was named Rangers MVP. Hilford was ridiculously consistent all season, scoring in double figures in 17 of 21 outings. She finished the season with averages of 13.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Jacinta Maxwell was recognised with the Coaches Award and Amelia Peck claimed the Player's Player Award.

Having not even reached their teens, a group of sports stars from the City of Casey will achieve their dream of competing at state level basketball later this month. Ryan Baker (Berwick Fields Primary School), Cedric Rault and Phoenix Windsor (both from St Catherine's Primary School Berwick) fought through a tough selection process in May to make the final team of 12 to represent Victoria in the boys' under-12 School Sport Australia Basketball Championship in Darwin. Dakota Kirikiri, 12, of Narre Warren North Primary School also made it through to the girls' under-12 Victorian basketball team and will compete in the School Sport Australia Basketball Championship in Darwin from 11-17 August. Team manager of the under-12 boys basketball team Sam Thompson said the talent this year was exceptional with 64 boy's trialling from across the state. "We are a very quick team this year with a lot of great outside shooters as well some fantastic athletic big guys that can create their own shots off the dribble," he said. Thompson said Ryan, 12, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, had shown excellent ball handling skills. "He is a great rebounder and a team first player." He said Cedric, 12, who plays basketball for Casey Cavaliers, was a great point/shooting guard who was very quick. "My only advice for the other states would be not to leave him open at the three point line." Thompson said Phoenix, 12, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, was a versatile shooting forward. "He has fantastic court vision and is able to dish and drive using his fantastic ball handling skills to either set up his team mates or create a shot for himself." Team manager of the under-12 girls basketball team Sam Amos said Dakota, who plays for the Dandenong Rangers, was a "real competitor." "She impressed selectors during trials with her defence, great ball handling, scoring ability and understanding of the game. She is going play a very important role when we are away as
As we head towards the business end of the TAC Cup season and inch closer to the 2018 AFL National Draft, draft hopefuls are starting to separate themselves from the pack with outstanding performances. Another way to really catch the eye of AFL scouts is by recording impressive numbers at the AFL Draft Combine. This year's combine, held at Etihad Stadium from October 2-5, will see 80 of the best draft prospects be put to the test in front of all AFL clubs. The combine assesses player's strength and skills through many trials including kicking, clean hands, agility, jumping and running tests. There will be no shortage of locals showcasing their wares, with five Dandenong Stingrays receiving invitations. Dandenong's Toby Bedford, Riley Bowman, Zac Foot, Will Hamill and Bailey Williams have been invited. As showcased by the Rays tremendous season that has them sitting on top the ladder, the team possesses a wealth of talent and the likes of Bailey Williams and Riley Bowman are potential first-round draft picks. Williams, who can play ruck and key forward, is perhaps the most tantalising prospect of the bunch. The 198cm big man is athletic, agile and can take a pack mark like few others. Whilst his aerial work is tremendous, once the ball hits the ground, he is just as dangerous and that aspect of his game really sets him apart from other big men. Bedford, Foot and Hamill have enjoyed stunning TAC Cup seasons and have forced their way into draft discussions. Big outings in the TAC Cup finals, followed by strong testing at the combine could see all three players quickly rise up the rankings. Players who missed out on being invited to the national combine will have the chance to prove themselves in state combines. All AFL clubs submit nominations of players they want to see at the state combines, with more than 100 players invited to take part. Those lists will be finalised in the coming weeks.

Rampant Bulls run riot in the second half By Hayley Wildes Noble Park recorded a massive win in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League on Saturday, taking care of Montrose on the road - 24.7 (151) to 12.12 (84). The Bulls slammed on 13 second half goals as Kyle Martin (four goals) and Piva Wright (five goals) ran riot. Rowville fell to Vermont in a top four battle. Vermont took control of the game with a sixgoal to one opening term and recorded a 16.11 (107) to 9.11 (65) win. Matthew Traynor and Riley D’Arcy (five goals) were best in a disappointing day for Rowville. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, the Doveton Eagles bounced back from last week’s defeat with a hard-fought win over Murrumbeena at home, 12.11 (83) to 8.7 (55). Cameron Carmody was best for the Eagles,
while Russell Robertson booted four goals. Keysborough was challenged at times by Caulfield, but its class shone through as the side claimed a 14.8 (92) to 9.7 (61) win at home. Chris Bryan (five goals) was electric up forward and James Anwyl played a pivotal role. In Division 3, Hampton Park was a class above Hallam, claiming a cruisy 14.7 (91) to 5.4 (34) win. Reece Smart and Justin Hill (six goals) dominated for the Redbacks, while Jonathan Daly and Rory McIvor battled hard all day for the Hawks. Endeavour Hills powered away in the final term against Heatherton to record a 13.13 (91) to 7.6 (48) win at home. The Dandenong Stingrays were tested by the Northern Knights on Saturday but, as they have done all season long, found a way to get the win and extended their winning streak to nine games. The Rays were wasteful in front of goal and it cost them dearly in the opening half as they struggled their way to 2.11 (23) at the main break. Kicking with the wind in the first term, Dandenong peppered the goals and had almost triple the amount of inside 50s but was unable to convert. Despite their dominance around the ball, the Stingrays trailed 3.0 (18) to 1.5 (11) at quarter time. The Knights were getting the ball out the back and transferring play easier than other Rays’ opponents have been able to throughout the year. Another inaccurate term in the second was beginning to frustrate the Dandy players as they were unable to gain the ascendancy despite having plenty of the ball. A late goal to Corey Ellison was important and trimmed the lead to under two kicks. Trailing by eight points at half-time had the Rays well and truly in the game, just needing to finish off their work better. The third term was one of complete domination and the signs were there early. Jeremy Burton put on his afterburners and kicked a fine running goal just 18 seconds into the quarter to start what was a game-winning quarter of football for Dandenong. Although the Rays still struggled with efficiency in the forward line, they were able to completely own the quarter and two goals in two minutes to Finlay Bayne and Bailey Williams had the side two goals up at the 10-minute mark. The likes of Lachlan Young, captain Campbell Hustwaite and Daniel Frampton were beginning to assert themselves on the
