But as far as speed is concerned, she says she's not seen any changes.

"Some people just don't get it," she said.

"It's for everybody's safety to go that little bit slower between dusk and dawn.

You can see her handiwork all around the Upper Yarra. Not on fences or buildings, but on the bodies of dead wombats and kangaroos.

Along with other carers from the Upper Yarra Wildlife Rescue Network, it's a busy time for Dale with the increasing carnage of wildife on Yarra Valley roads.

The pink love-heart marking a male wombat killed on Big Pats Road in East Warburton is all the more tragic because he is such a beautiful creature. There's not a sign of mange, he's got a shiny coat and he's a good size.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to presume that life was pretty good for him in Big Pats Creek.

Both Dale and her colleague Lesley Pinkerton believe speed, and a growing population of car drivers, are behind the increase in animals killed on local roads.

And there are particular roads that are truly deadly.

"Lusatia Park Road is 60 through the builtup area, but then it goes up to 80.

"We had two killed last week in the 60 kilometre zone, but just looking at the impact, the drivers must have been doing 90," Lesley said.

Gembrook Launching Place Road is another hot spot and Lesley said from her own observations it's not unusual to see bikes and cars doing well over the speed limit.

"The increase in trucks coming along that road, and the general increase in traffic ... the roads, and the wildlife just can't take the sort of traffic that we have coming up here now," she said.

Dale agrees. With 13 years on wildlife rescue she says she has seen an improvement in awareness of wildlife on the roads, but too often it's after the fact.

"We've been getting the message out there that if you hit something, please check the pouch for young.

"People used to say they just didn't think to stop and check, but that is happening more now," she said.

Sigh.

When this email from Monbulk MP James Merlino landed in my inbox over the weekend, my reaction was one of fatigue.

With still four months until the State Election and a Federal Election looming for next year, I’m already weary of the constant sniping.

The government slams the opposition for inaction on one issue; the opposition retaliates with “yeah, but you haven’t done xyz” and vice-versa.

I worry that if I’m exhausted by this childish back and forth - as a journalist with a keen interest in politics - the average voter will be close to tuning out completely.

Apathy doesn’t help either side of politics and certainly doesn’t do the community any good.

But I feel like the near-constant accusations of inaction and impropriety is breeding apathy.

I fear the result will be like the old ‘boy who cried wolf’ - a politician will make a serious error worthy of condemnation but voters will have already tuned out, and it will slide under the radar.

As a news organisation we have a duty to ensure this doesn’t happen.

We need to cut through the political back and forth and get to the heart of local issues, to help our readers make an informed decision at the ballot box on Saturday 24 November.

Help to stop hunger Families doing it tough in the Yarra Ranges need an extra 25,256 meals per month to keep from going hungry.

Foodbank already provides 11,903 meals in the area each month, but urged people to support its national public appeal to meet the rise in need for food assistance over winter.

"At this time of the year, we have families struggling to make ends meet, with meal-skip-

ping becoming standard practice, particularly for parents," Foodbank Australia CEO Brianna Casey said.

"With 40 per cent of food insecure households families with dependent children, it's crucial that we do more to get food on their dining tables."

MP scorns probe

By Casey Neill Eildon MP Cindy McLeish says claims she misused electorate office staff are "laughable".

Monbulk MP James Merlino announced on Sunday 29 July that he'd referred 18 Liberal and National Party MPs to Victoria Police for investigation for allegedly using electorate office staff for political campaigning during normal business hours.

He said the evidence provided to the police included "clear political campaigning by electorate office staff".

"I have also requested that Victoria Police investigate the leave status of ministerial staff employed by the former Napthine Government during the 2014 Victorian election campaign," Mr Merlino said.

"It's clear that a significant number of Ministerial advisors did not take leave during the

caretaker period and instead worked at the direction of then Liberal Party state director, and now convicted criminal, Damian Mantach.

"This allowed the Liberal Party to access taxpayer funded expenditure in the order of $2 million for the Liberals' re-election campaign.

"The Liberal Party and National Party refused to have the behaviour of their own MPs investigated by the Ombudsman - they can no longer hide from that scrutiny."

Ms McLeish said: "For 20 minutes this morning (Monday 30 July) James Merlino fronted the media and could not provide one single piece of evidence to support his claims."

She said his accusation was "a laughable political stunt ... coming from a government who has six ministers under police investigation".

Ms McLeish was referring to Friday's news

that Victoria Police had launched a criminal investigation into the Labor Party's 'red shirt rorts' - using $388,000 in parliamentary staff allowances to pay staff who were working fulltime as ALP campaigners ahead of the November 2014 election.

"Victoria Police undertook reassessment of the material in relation to allegations of misuse of parliamentary budget entitlements to determine if further investigation was required," a statement said.

"This assessment has now been completed and a formal investigation will now be conducted by the Fraud and Extortion Squad.

"As this is an active and ongoing investigation, it would not be appropriate to provide further comment at this time."

Mr Merlino was among several ministers who benefited from these campaigners working in their offices.

Mural has a healthy water message

By Kath Gannaway A new mural in Warburton is sending a message that keeping the Yarra River clean and healthy is a responsibility for which everyone can take ownership.

The project, funded under the River to the Bay Program is a collaboration involving Yarra Ranges Council, DEWLP, Upper Yarra Secondary College and EEK (Environmental Education for Kids).

River to the Bay addresses litter which impacts on the river with a strong message that "only rain should enter our drains and stormwater systems".

Julie Hanman, River to the Bay Facilitator with the Council engaged Warburton mosaic artist Sioux Dollman to work with Upper Yarra Secondary College's Year 8 students to design and create the mural which was 'christened' on Tuesday, 24 July.

The mural has pride of place on the wall of the Warburton Bakery which has very strong local and tourist visitation.

"The intention of the project was to raise awareness of stormwater pollution, showing local young people the value of the river, both for ecological and recreation reasons," Ms Hanman said.

She said the campaign involved education sessions delivered by EEK for all Year 8 students covering the inter-dependence of the platypus, its food and the health of the river.

"Students learnt what they as individuals can do to make a difference," she said.

"This includes reusable water bottles, saying no to take-away coffee cups - they can't be recycled, don't litter and pick up after your dog."

Students Amy Morris and Carla Cadie delivered a speech other student levels about the project and spoke at the launch.

"Rubbish that you drop, or dog poo that is not picked up, is carried by the wind and rain and ends up in the river where you fish and swim," Carla said.

Tributes for former Councillor Maurie McQuade Yarra Ranges Council has paid tribute to former O'Shannassy Ward councillor Maurie McQuade who passed away on Friday, 20 July, 2018, aged 91.

Mr McQuade was a councillor with the Upper Yarra Shire Council from 1991 to 1994 and, following the amalgamation of shires, served on the Yarra Ranges Council from 1997 to 2000.

During the amalgamation period he remained very active in local affairs and established the Yarra Junction Swim Committee to fundraise and build the Yarra Centre at Yarra Junction and served on numerous committees including Waste Management, Warburton Rail Trail and Bushfire Prevention.

Speaking at the Council meeting on Tuesday, 25 July, Cr Jim Child, also a former Upper Yarra councillor, said he knew Mr McQuade personally and respected his involvement in the community.

"Maurie was a passionate member of the Wesburn-Millgrove Fire Brigade and a passionate contributor to his community. He will be sorely missed," he said.

Cr Len Cox also spoke paying tribute to his former colleague both as a man and as a councillor who he said had a very strong interest in working for his community.

"What I learnt from Maurie then was what a gentleman he was," he said.

"He worked hard for all those years to make life in that area better than what it was.”

A Memorial Service will be held at the Heritage Funeral Home in Wantirna on Wednesday, 1 August, at 1pm.

The Mail extends condolences to Mr McQuade's family and to his council colleagues.

as plastic cutlery, bottles, bags, straws and cans into the logo as a message that all these things are part of the problem.

Cr Jim Child thanked Ms Dollman and the students for what he said was a significant piece of art with an important message.

"What is really significant is how we are going to manage storm water and what effect that has on our streams," he said.

"This is an absolute credit to you all. ”

On Saturday 28 July at 8:55am, Yarra Ranges Police intercepted a Ford Ranger utility that was doing 93km/h in a 60 zone.

The 27-year-old male driver was found to be a disqualified driver and also returned a positive result for illicit drugs.

His vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1017 and he will face court on summons at a future date in relation to all charges.

Deer shooting Sergeant at Warburton Police Station, Tom Wilkinson is urging members of the public to ring triple 0, if they hear any suspicious shots.

The call comes after what Sgt Wilkinson said has been a spate of deer shooting in the Yarra Valley.

"We've had a spate of deer hunting and deer shooting so we're asking members of the community that if they hear any shots or see anything in respect to deer hunting to immediately call triple-zero."

Sunday burning ban lifted

By Casey Neill New local laws for burning off are now in place.

Yarra Ranges Councillors voted to make the Open Air Burning Local Law at their Tuesday 24 July meeting, but not unanimously.

Cr Jim Child moved an alternative recommendation with support from Cr Fiona McAllister over concern about biosecurity. His changes removed a ban on Sunday burning in rural areas and added mention of burning for biosecurity control alongside burning for fire prevention.

Cr Child said farmers couldn't predict when they'd need to burn for biosecurity, when the right conditions would present, and when a burn-off might need to continue over a Sunday.

"We need to allow our farmers the right to farm and manage their properties in a sustainable manner," he said.

"Our farmers have been in this so long.

They know what they're doing."

Crs Noel Cliff and Mike Clarke opposed the

alternative motion.

"I can go along with basically everything in it, except the Sundays," Cr Cliff said.

"Sundays is when we get the bulk of our six million visitors.

"I don't want to do anything that I think could jeopardise that."

He suggested a permit for Sunday burns deemed necessary.

"We've managed to survive Sundays without smoke for forever," he said.

"Let's not wreck what we've got here."

But Cr Child said a permit system was impractical.

He said farmers worked seven days a week.

"Mother nature works seven days a week, too," he said.

Cr Clarke said allowing burning on Sundays meant "we're just not giving the atmosphere a rest".

"I think we should be taking some days out

during the week to help restore those atmospheric conditions," he said.

He referenced a verbal submission from Emerald resident Kate Forster at the meeting, which raised health concerns.

She told councillors that "smoke pollution knows no boundary" and burning off produced "a toxic soup" that "need not be visible to be harmful".

"Burning biomass creates black carbon, a significant contributor to global warming," Ms Forster said.

She said 24-hour burning was allowed in Cardinia Shire and fire brigade call-outs increased when people took their eyes off their burn around dinner time.

Ms Forster suggested Yarra Ranges work with the community on education and creative alternatives to burning off.

Cr Tim Heenan advocated for stronger enforcement to stop people burning green or wet materials.

The council received more than 210 submissions on the local law and heard verbal submissions at a special committee meeting in June.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox, said the local law would be in place for the next 10 years.

"As a result of the community's feedback, we've made changes to ensure the local law works for our residents, while striking the balance between the need to burn off excess vegetation and the right of our residents to live in comfort without excess smoke," he said.

The local law removed the prohibition on open air burning in June and July in rural areas, the 8am to 6pm time limit, the requirement to have an adult in attendance during burning in rural areas, the restriction on multiple fires, and the fire size limit of one cubic metre.

Another step forward for Advent Care and its ‘queen’

By Kath Gannaway Eileen Glover has million dollar views to the Yarra River and she leaves no-one in any doubt that she is "living like a queen".

Eileen, 93, came to Advent Care Yarra Ranges aged care facility in Warburton on a permanent basis just three months ago, after staying for a short stint of respite care. She has all the energy and enthusiasm of a real estate agent as she shows visitors around her new room, one of 13 just completed as part of Stage 2 of a $2.7 million redevelopment.

"I can see the river, I can see the road and I can see the bridge just looking out my window," she says, adding that with breakfast in bed and wonderful staff "I feel like I'm on holidays the whole time".

Stage 1 of the three-stage redevelopment was

completed in October last year adding 19 fully compliant resident rooms and this latest work brings the total number of rooms up to 32.

The redevelopment to date has seen spacious rooms with ensuite facilities, a new chapel, and refurbished dining room, and in what is believed to be an Australian first for an aged care facility, thermoskirt hydroponic heating concealed in the skirting boards.

While a number of rooms have views to the Yarra River, main road aspects and the inclusion of courtyards, and picture windows, has ensured all have views to the outdoors.

The project is a triumph for Advent Care and the Warburton community with the facility threatened with closure in 2016.

Advent Care CEO David Reece said the decision by the AdventCare Board to redevelop

and expand the facility was made possible through tremendous community support, including support of the Warburton/Yarra Junction Bendigo Community Bank.

Along with the physical redevelopment, there has been an increase in staff and staff hours to cater for the additional residents.

Stage 2 was officially opened by Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Len Cox on Thursday, 26 July.

Cr Cox congratulated everyone involved in the project saying there was a demonstrated need for quality aged-care facilities.

"The need is growing very greatly all the time and will continue to do so as the population continues to grow," he said.

Joining other officials, staff and residents and their families for a tour of the new section, he said he was tremendously impressed.

My dear friend, and a friend to many in the Healesville community, Rev Dipaloko, passed away peacefully at Maroondah Hospital after a short illness.

Rev finally settled in Healesville after travelling to Australia as a Burmese Buddhist monk, however following turmoil in his own country, he could not return.

He became a political refugee, disrobed and became a lay Buddhist.

Rev helped many people, from strangers to friends.

Guided by Buddhist practice he never missed an opportunity to show compassion and kindness.

A service to celebrate and honour his life will be held at the Darron Honey Center, Uniting Church, 286 Maroondah Highway, Healesville on Thursday 2 August at 1pm.

Clean-up call I would like to lend my support to the letter from Sue Slusarek published on 17 July concerning the old Sanitarium Weetbix factory that sports the appealing but disingenuous euphemism of The Edgewater Spa resort.

Warburton is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Yarra Valley and

slap bang in the middle of town is a magnificent, heritage listed art deco building.

This is my euphemism for the bombsite and appalling mess that is the Sanitarium.

Broken windows, graffiti, temporary cyclone fencing, often blown down leaving easy access to abandoned and water-filled excavation pits.

What on earth must our tourist visitors with money in their pockets think when they come upon this blight in the middle of our beautiful landscape?

When I walk around the perimeter of this building with my two little dogs I see a stopped art deco clock and bare concrete silos, fouled with pigeon guano but topped with rent-paying smart phone towers.

I can't help thinking of double standards and what that means when it comes to spending money on this site.

When people keep promising but not delivering then the audience stops listening.

I would like to know why the council and state authorities don't fine the owner of this site on a regular and on-going basis for not keeping it in a safe and orderly condition compatible with the rest of our beautiful town.

The way a farmer would be held to account for mending his fences or the way a person in a high-risk fire area would be held to account for not slashing their property in fire season.

My suggestion to the owners of this site is to sell it on to a business enterprise that has the money and the desire to develop it into a successful venture that will benefit the local community and attract the tourist dollar.

To finish on a positive note, I would like to suggest that the property be cleaned up and made into a public recreational space at the owner's cost - perhaps a park or a botanical garden for the use of the local community whilst these rich interstate developers prevaricate for another 10 years.

CEO leaves council Yarra Ranges Council will have a change of leadership following the resignation this week of CEO Glenn Patterson.

Mr Patterson will take up the position of CEO at the City of Casey in September.

With a population of 327,380 as at 2017, Casey is more than double Yarra Ranges' population of 156,982, but in a vastly more condensed landscape of 409 square kilometres compared with Yarra Ranges' 2470 square kilometres.

Mayor Len Cox confirmed Mr Patterson’s resignation, saying he had been with Yarra Ranges for 10 years.

By Kath Gannaway Growing up in Healesville, going to the local dances, family, hours enjoyed in the garden were just some of the lovely memories Enid Richards shared at her 90th birthday celebration.

Enid, whose parents were local butcher Alex Christie and Doris, was guest of honour at an afternoon tea to celebrate her 90th birthday on Saturday, 21 July, at Healesville RSL. Enid said she grew up at her grandmother's house in Farnham Road before the family, including her only sister, Juel, moved to Green Street right in the heart of the town.

"I was six years old when we moved," she said. "Dad had a butcher shop opposite the Grand Hotel and then next to the Middle Hotel.

"We went to Healesville State School and as we grew up we loved the local dances. Both Juel and I loved to dance," she said.

Enid and husband Dick, a past president of the RSL, had three children, Sandra, now

from a strictly selfish point of view, and all the council is of the same mind,” Cr Cox said.

He said that with the help of the council, Mr Patterson had turned Yarra Ranges Council around.

“The place is running extremely well and a lot of it is due to Glenn’s ability,” he said.

“Not only has he the ability to run staff, but to speak to anybody at any level. He relates to people very well.

“He has been quite an asset to Yarra Ranges Council.”

Mr Patterson served as CEO at the Colac Otway Shire and Baw Baw Shire councils before joining Yarra Ranges.

Announcing Mr Patterson’s appointment on Enid with son John Richards, daughter Pam Ockwell and grandson Danny Wilson.

Enid enjoyed her 90th birthday cards, and received a Certificate of Recognition from Casey MP Tony Smith.

Yarra Ranges Council received a 130-signature petition in opposition to a phone tower in Wesburn.

Councillors accepted the petition at their Tuesday 24 July meeting.

It related to a planning application to use and develop 20 Settlement Road for a telecommunications facility.

Residents have concerns regarding the negative impact that native vegetation removal will cause, including loss of habitat.

They also raised worries about intrusion into SES flight path, noise, health hazards, and the impact the development might have on the landscape.

Residents believe the development is not necessary, due to the adequate services provided by local telecommunications infrastructure.

The petition will be considered as part of the planning permit application process.

“His extensive experience in local government and his strong commitment to community shone through,” he said of the unanimous appointment.

Mr Patterson is quoted in the release as saying he is “excited by the challenge of leading the organisation in an exciting future”.

Cr Cox said the next step for the Yarra Ranges was to find a replacement.

“We will meet on Tuesday (31 July) to decide who to use to help us find a CEO and to discuss other arrangements for an interim replacement when Glenn leaves,” he said.

A new CEO is not expected to be appointed before the start of next year.

A Wandin East man will answer stalking and reckless driving charges after allegedly doing donuts on a football field.

Yarra Ranges CIU Detectives said a witness, 73, reported seeing the man driving on Wandin East Recreation Reserve on Thursday 7 June.

They said the witness went to close the gate when the driver exited, and an altercation ensued in which the witness' car was damaged with a rock.

Following a police investigation, officers arrested a 25-year-old Wandin East man and charged him with 25 offences, including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, stalking, driving in a dangerous manner, driving a vehicle causing loss of traction, and criminal damage.

He's due to appear in Ringwood Magistrates' Court on 13 December.

IN BRIEF Million-dollar road relief

Tribute to Zillah

The Steels Creek Road Rehabilitation project is a step closer to fruition.

Yarra Ranges Councillors awarded the $1.6 million contract to Bitu-mill at their Tuesday 24 July meeting.

Works are expected to start in August and be completed within 80 Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV) calendar days.

The project will include road stabilisation, driveway crossings, kerb and channel and underground drainage between Hubbard and Gulf roads, and Gulf Road and Pinnacle Lane.

The council report said the existing road pavements in these areas were beyond their service life and had large areas of failure and deformation.

"Rehabilitation of road pavements is required to continue the service of the current road assets," it said.

By Kath Gannaway Making the most of life was Zillah Postlethwaite's golden rule.

She was a resilient and vibrant lady.

Zillah passed away on 30 June, 2018, aged 90, after what she would almost certainly have deemed 'a fortunate life', having overcome many challenges along the way.

Zillah was born in Yarra Glen on 13 April, 1928, the youngest of Leslie Stanley Gordon Bell and his wife Zillah Emmeline Bell's three children. She had a brother Doug and a sister Joan with whom she shared a strong bond, and the childhood memories typical of life growing up in a small country town.

Her mother died when she was just five and for a time she went to live in Gippsland to live with relatives, returning when she was about eight years old after her father remarried Dorothy.

Tragically, he died just a couple of years later.

Zillah went to Yarra Glen State School and from there went to work on the family farm, but more hardship was to come when the farm was lost during the depression. She also spent time at Gulf Station with her cousins, the Bells.

She married Jack Postlethwaite in 1951 in the Presbyterian Church at Yarra Glen, the same church from which she was farewelled.

They had three children, Lynette, John and Shane. After Lynette's death in 1996, at the age of 68, Zillah cared for her granddaughter, Rebecca.

Estranged from Jack, Zillah was on her own since the mid-80s, making the most of a simple life. She worked for a long time as a cleaner at the Yarra Valley Clinic, and refused to let the grass grow under her feet as she got older.

"She had a positive attitude to life and despite some health issues, she lived in her own home until just recently," her son John said.

Grants to help sport participation

Zillah Postlethwaite - typically smiling.

"Mum liked the social side of things and was a popular member of a number of groups in Healesville.

"She went to New Zealand with friends at stayed in backpackers when she was in her 80s and loved it," he said.

Zillah was involved in Healesville Probus and Senior Citizens Club, joined U3A and particularly loved line dancing and singing with

the Rocky Road Choir.

Songs recorded by the choir were played at the service in her honour.

"Mum did so many things, and despite living through some tough times, was pretty resilient," John said.

Zillah will be missed and fondly remembered by her family and many friends.

Healesville High School, Upper Yarra Secondary College and Millwarra Primary School will get a boost to their interschool sport participation thanks to a grant from the State Government’s Active Kids initiative.

Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, announced on Tuesday, 24 July, that the three Yarra Valley schools were among 300 around the state to shae in the $1.1 million funding pool.

The funding is for disadvantaged primary, secondary and specialist schools to support them overcome cost barriers to participate in interschool sport and will help cover costs such as equipment, uniforms, transport, entry fees, coaching, venue hire and coverage of relief teachers.

“We know that the cost of interschool sports can be a barrier for students participating in sports, which is why we’re helping Northern Victoria schools cover those costs.

“Happy, healthy students are better students and interschool sports are a great way to engage children in physical activity,” Ms Symes said.

By Kath Gannaway Community members gathered at Healesville RSL on Wednesday, 25 July, as the Lions Club of Healesville hosted its annual disbursements dinner meeting.

Representatives from schools, emergency services, pre-schools and other youth, welfare and community organisations accepted donations totaling $29,950 and gave a brief rundown of the projects that would benefit.

Donations ranged from $500 to $2000 with Yarra Glen Guides, HICCI, Melba Support Services' Able Bakery, Yarra Valley Tourist Railway and Badger Creek Men's Shed among those included in the mix.

Lions member and Master of Ceremonies, Stephen Stafford, said the majority of the funds raised and passed on to the 3777 and wider communities came from the Lions Den Opportunity Shop and thanked the Lions volunteers for their dedication and

many, many hours of volunteering.

This year's event marks the 56th year of the Lions Club of Healesville and 23 years since they opened the shop.

Projects identified by the groups ranged from a new gazebo for Chum Creek Primary School and Ipads for Yarra Glen CFA's fire trucks to defibrillators at Dixons Creek CFA, new jumps at Healesville Pony Club and making the swimming program accessible to all at

Woori Yallock Primary School.

Woori Yallock representatives Jenna and Alex encapsulated the many expressions of gratitude.

"We understand that this money has not just appeared by magic so we would like to thank the Lions Club members for all their hard work," they said.

The success of Healesville musician Jeff Jenkins' 'DYLANesque' has been phenomenal ... but like an author of a first blockbuster novel, it left the obvious question ... "what next".

It was a question Jenkins and his team have answered with their new show 'True Confessions Revisted', set to rock The Memo in Healesville on Saturday, 18 August.

Jenkins says the answer was as obvious as the question ... - you add a couple more rock legends into the mix. So, Dylan, Petty and Nicks.

Bob Dylan and Tom Petty made history when they joined forces for one of the greatest concerts of all time, on their True Confessions tour in 1986 and Jenkins leaves fans (and future fans) in no doubt about the impact that tour had on him, both as a fan and a musician.

"It was an incredible coupling of two of the greatest artists coming together on one bill that the world has ever seen," he says.

"If you were there at Kooyong in '86, you should see our show; if you weren't there in '86, you should see our show," he adds with some of the humour audiences have enjoyed in DYLANesque.

"32 years on, and people still refer to the True Confessions Tour as one of the most remarkable gigs they've ever been to - it holds legendary status," Jenkins says.

Taking inspiration from those '86 concerts, Jenkins opens the show as Tom Petty, with backing band The Heartbreakers, and Healesville's Sarah Highgate as Stevie Nicks.

After the interval, there's a short solo as Dylan, before bringing the band and Stevie Nicks back out for the final set of rocking Dylan songs.

Keeping it all ‘old school’

By Kath Gannaway Gulf Station, one of Victoria's most complete group of slab-constructed pioneer farm buildings, has remained unchanged in the hands of the Bell family for nearly 100 years.

It was a working farm that would have needed a lot of hands-on skills to keep it operating, and to keep the buildings maintained.

Today, under the stewardship of the National Trust, the farm is maintained by volunteers.

Maintaining the buildings, using traditional materials and tools, and the garden, recreating the cottage garden of the era, is a labour of love.

Team leader Mike Ridley has been working on the farm for 20 years, Peter Petherbridge even longer with a 35 year connection. Others such as Barry Roberts are relative newcomers and much-needed and welcomed 'new blood' learning new skills and making a great contribution to the future of Gulf Station.

The farm is a time-capsule of a past era the homestead and outbuildings including the barn, butcher shop, separator room, dairy, school house, slaughter house, shearing shed and stables tell a compelling story.

Rebuilding the post and rail fencing around the sheep yards is the focus at the moment, although ongoing general maintenance is always on the list.

Barry says it's the only place he can learn the skills. "I used to come up here as a kid and remember all the animals. I dropped in one day to see what was happening and signed up," he said.

He is typical of the volunteers the team is looking for. Someone who is keen to learn, and can also help out with some of the muscle work.Gardening enthusiasts are also on the 'must have' list.

"We're working with the Trust and Yarra Ranges Council to try to understand where this place fits in the future," he said.

"We are maintaining it, and we think it's being maintained pretty well. What I would like to know from the shire is where they see it, and we're starting those discussions.

"This area should have big pull for families" Mike adds.

"What we're looking forward to is talking with the shire about its potential when the railway comes through and how to hook into a broader visitor experience."

Woori Yallock is now one game clear on top with Olinda, Upwey and Wandin fighting it out for second spot and Healesville just one game adrift in fifth.

Mount Evelyn is hot on their heels with 28 points.

Seville is one game clear from Yarra Glen with Yarra Junction just one win away in third.

The battle for fourth and fifth is being played out by Gembrook, Yea and Alexandra.

A-grade netball is tight with Olinda and Belgrave sharing the honours in top spot with Wandin ad Woori Yallock jostling for third.

There is a clear break for fifth between Monbulk, Warburton and Mount Evelyn.

Kinglake has leap-frogged Yea and sits on top, with Seville and Yarra Junction still trying to sort out third spot, with Yarra Glen and Powelltown still in a battle for fifth.

Emerald played well in the second but Woori Yallock went into half time with a sevengoal lead. Woori upped the pace in the third, shooting 17 goals to 10 and it was always going to be a tough road for Emerald from there.

Old ‘Happy’ swings away

By Jamie Strudley It was the end of an era for Georgia Laven and Camden Hewitson on Saturday 28 July as they competed in their last ever Little Athletics Championships event.

More than 1000 athletes from throughout Victoria descended upon Lake Dewar, near Myrniong, for the 2018 Little Athletics Victoria State Cross Country Championships.

Georgia has represented Yarra Ranges Athletics at every LAVIC championships since she started in under-8s, with the rare and enviable record of winning a medal at every championship.

Georgia ran a superb race on Saturday to finish a very close second place and secure her 24th and final LAVIC individual state medal.

Camden continued his outstanding form from the Athletics Victoria season with his best ever LAVIC championship placing, finishing an outstanding eighth in a very competitive field.

The club had three other medalists on the day, with Zoe Clarke (under-9 girls), Kiara Fla-

vel (under-12 girls) and Maddie Laven (under-13 girls) comfortably winning their respective age groups.

Valley women draw with Maroondah

By Andrew Woolley A wonderfully sunny winter day saw some good football played at the Yarra Valley Soccer Club.

The juniors kicked the day off with the under-13s playing Knox.

A lop-sided score line not a fair reflection on the quality of the game.

A fantastic second half display resulted in the Valley's only goal, with Riley scoring a penalty.

The under-11s had a fantastic game but were just unable to find the back of the net.

A good Monbulk side was able to finish their chances and nabbed the three points in front of the young Valley stars.

The women's team played away against Maroondah and nabbed a 1-1 draw.

The girls had the majority of the game and looked to run away with it but were unable to put a few more goals on the board to take all three points.

With a forfeit for the senior men's, the reserves were the only senior game Valley had at home this week.

A 3-3 score line meant the supporters on the sideline were never bored.

Two goals to Finlay Kerridge and Josh Williemsen's first ever goal for the club got Valley the point in a game it probably should have won.

The weather was cold but fine when Warburton Golf Club competitors took to the course on Wednesday 25 July for a stableford contest.

Ray ‘Happy’ Gilmour won with (11) 36 points and the runner-up was ’Smiling’ Stan Slusarek (21) 34 points.

Balls down to 31, and nearest to the pins were Tex Van der Kooi on the third and Ray Gilmour with his second shot on the first.

Play on Saturday 28 July included a special presentation to Bill Dunn, acknowledging his many years’ service to the club as he battles with illness.

The competition was four-man ambrose and the weather was beautiful.

There were a lot of good team scores in and a lot of “if we had have only got those couple of putts we would have won” overheard.

The winning team was Trevor MacNee (5) Barry Le Gassick (17) Paul Kennedy (12) and Lance Atwell (22), nett 54.125.

The runners-up were Dave Hatt (9) Sean Kennedy (9) Ian Kempton (14) and Wayne Kempton (18), nett 54.75.

Balls down to 55.875, and nearest to the pins were Alan Hubbard on the third, Liam Kay on the fifth, Sean Kennedy on the ninth, Paul ‘Snorkel’ Long on the 12th and Ray ‘Happy’ Gilmore on the 15th.

Safety boost for Corolla

An active cruise control system headlines the new safety features. of the lane markings as well as the position of the vehicle ahead and then provides steering assistance to ensure the car stays centred in the lane.

It is designed to function on highways and freeways, but if the driver removes their hands from the steering wheel, they receive visual and audio warnings.

Across the range, the new Corolla hatch offers further standard safety technology in the form of an automatic high beam system for the headlights and a road sign assist (RSA) system that is designed to recognise speed limit signs and displays them on the multi information display in the instrument cluster.

Corolla SX and ZR models add a blind spot monitor (BSM) to the safety kit list with ZR also featuring head-up display.

For improved safety and convenience when reversing, the new Corolla also comes standard with a rear-view camera with guidelines while for passive safety and occupant protection, all models include a total of seven airbags.

The new Corolla has a pre-collision safety system.

The new Toyota Corolla hatch brings unprecedented levels of advanced safety technology to the small car class with active driver assistance and passive protection features.

Active cruise control, a pre-collision safety system, seven airbags, and reversing camera are all standard across the three-model Corolla hatch range.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing vicepresident Sean Hanley said the new generation model offered outstanding driver assistance technologies that significantly raised the safety bar.

"The all-new Corolla hatch is set to make its mark as one of the safest small cars in its class with many of its standard advanced safety technologies usually only found on luxury or higher-grade vehicles," he said.

"But along with its new-found stylish design and fun-to-drive attitude, we considered safety an absolute priority for the new Corolla hatch to ensure whatever market our customers are shopping in, they have the highest levels of protection and driver assistance possible."

Headlining the features is an active cruise control system that is standard across the entire three-model range of Corolla Ascent Sport, SX and ZR. Using a system of cameras and other sensors to maintain a set distance to the car in front, the driver is able to set a cruising speed of between 30km/h and 180km/h with the system operating at all speeds down to a complete stop for CVT-equipped models.

For the Ascent Sport fitted with the manual gearbox, the ACC operates at speeds above about 30km/h.

All new Corolla hatch models are also fitted with a suite of advanced safety features to help avoid collisions including an active pre-collision safety (PCS) system with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection.

If a potential collision is detected, the PCS system will initially employ a visual and audible warning, then brake assistance and if the driver fails to heed the warnings, full automatic braking to assist the driver to bring the car to a complete stop.

All Corolla hatch models also feature an advanced lane departure warning and support system with multiple functions.

If the car deviates from the lane unintentionally, the lane departure alert (LDA) will first issue an audible and visual warning before providing gentle steering assistance to encourage the driver to move back into the lane.

To help reduce the potential of fatiguerelated collisions, the system also includes a sway warning function that displays a warning prompting the driver to take a break if the system detects the car swerving due to driver inattention.

Corolla hatch models equipped with the CVT feature a lane trace assist (LTA) function that works when the ACC is activated.
