CHURCH COLUMNS REFLECTION St Mary's Parish Crafty Circle craft group was asked to include the Catholic Church in this year's Jumpers and Jazz Festival.

With donated pieces ranging from squares to butterflies, flowers and even some finger knitting from children, the group managed to pull it together.

Many volunteers - and many hours of stitching and sewing, knitting and crocheting were involved.

St Mary's is a multicultural, diverse and inclusive parish and this is what gave the group the inspiration for their final piece.

They included sunflowers as they are a very big part of the local community.

The creativeness of the parishioners and their willingness to donate what they made helped the group put together the final creation.

Although they were not in the judging area, the group enjoyed bringing this together - and they already have a plan ready to implement in 2019!

DRAGON A SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Creators of the 'Dragon of Drought' on Palmerin Street Louise Tait and Robyn Marsh had a tonne of fun putting him together, but there's a serious message behind the mythical monster.

The close friends - who've been jazzing up Warwick's CBD trees together for the last 10 years - decided to reflect the region's current drought situation in their 2018 tree jumper installation and also help to drive home the mental health message when it comes to our farmers.

According to Chinese mythology, the dragon is the fifth animal of the zodiac and arrived late at the Jade Palace after taking pity on a drought-stricken town and stopping to bring rain.

Louise and Robyn have pointed out that dragons are resilient and courageous like our primary producers - but they also require respect and compassion in tough times.

The crafty pair put their 'Dragon of Drought' together in just a couple of weeks, using recycled materials to, as Robyn puts it, "go a bit lean" in recognition of the tough times our people on the land are experiencing.

"The head is basically a cardboard box Louise had lying around and we've used a variety of other basic materials, including aircon ducting," Robyn told the Free Times.

"My son has a Chinese girlfriend and I made him a dragon-themed quilt for his 21st birthday.

"Louise saw the quilt and said we had to do a dragon theme for Jumpers and Jazz this year.

"We did some research and discovered the drought link and it all flowed on from

Louise said raising mental health awareness for drought-afflicted producers is crucial.

"We really want to start that conversation about seeking help," she said.

The Tree Jumper competition has always sat at the heart of Warwick's premier winter festival and this year's theme was 'Dulcet', with textile artists from around the region and beyond rising to the challenge of interpreting the theme in their own unique way.

honoured as the 2018 Tree Jumper Hall of Fame inductee - adorned Tree 67 in Palmerin Street with her work 'Cats Rule'.

"At our house, our cat definitely rules the roost, but then at the end of the day if Puss comes and puts his head in my lap, looks into my eyes and falls asleep, I can think of nothing more relaxing and therapeutic than to be carried away with the 'Dulcet' sounds of his contented purring," Margaret's entry read.

obyn Dennis had the tough job of judging this year's crop of Tree Jumpers in the Warwick Central Business District for Jumpers and Jazz in July 2018.

The owner of the 'Art and Craft Cottage' in Ipswich - which supplies lovers of all things textile-related and runs regular craft workshops - was at the Warwick Art Gallery last Saturday 21 July

as the winners were announced.

Hopefuls gathered outside the gallery and listened to some smooth jazz before and after the announcement, which helped to kick off a big weekend of Jumpers and Jazz.

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine said the Festival invited a new judge to Warwick every year for the Tree Jumper competition, describing Robyn as "a fantastic advocate for yarn projects".

Another winner singled out for special mention by Robyn was the entry by Southern Downs ARK, one of our local animal rescue groups.

Their installation is near the roundabout of Palmerin and Fitzroy Streets and features a myriad of tiny crocheted critters - created by a mystery lady known only as 'Joan'.

Robyn noted that "small items can involve just as much work as large ones" in terms of detail, with the Southern Downs ARK entry also encouraging animal adoption. ●

Karina Devine paid tribute to Margaret's efforts over the 15 years of Jumpers and Jazz, with Margaret following the 2017 Hall of Fame recipient Jessica Thompson, whose 'Jumperhead' exhibition is open for viewing in the Warwick Art Gallery during the festival.

Brisbane's Narelle Mercer was the winner of the 'Dulcet' Themed Section of the 2018 Tree Jumper competition, for her stunning effort on one of the huge palm trees outside the ANZ Bank towards the southern end of Palmerin Street.

Robyn Dennis noted the logistical difficulty of 'yarnbombing' a tree of significant size, with Narelle's piece entitled 'I Can Hear A Rainbow'.

APPEAL FOR INFO ON LIKELY ARSONIST

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Rural firefighters continue to hold grave fears that a suspected arsonist active in the Dalveen and surrounding areas may pose a threat to both life and property.

As reported in the Free Times in our July 12 edition suspicious fires involving stacks of timber on rural properties were extinguished by rural crews on Thursday 7 June and on the weekends of 16-17 June and 23-24 June.

The activity then appeared to cease but a series of five grass fires relatively close to and within a few hours of each other last Sunday night, 22 July, suggest the person or persons unknown may again be active.

Urban and rural fire crews worked on Sunday night to control fires at the corner of Granite Belt Drive and Butler Road at Dalveen, Pfunder Road at Pozieres, Teale Road at The Summit and on Pozieres School Road and Pozieres Road.

The fires were all reported by the public between 6pm and 7.30pm, leading firefighters to suspect they were all deliberately lit.

The ‘straight’ pattern of the fires indicates the likely use of an accelerant.

The Teale Road fire came close to

threatening a residence, as did a fire on O’Keefe’s Road fire at Dalveen on the weekend of 23-24 June, when 10 acres were burnt and flames almost reached a hayshed on the property.

Rural firefighters at the time said with a change of wind direction the home on the property may have been under threat, along with neighbouring properties.

The other fires in June were on Tunnel Road at Dalveen.

The arson activity is particularly troubling due to the tinder-dry conditions across the region, with both the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas identified by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services as the prime bushfire ‘hot spots’ on the Darling Downs this year.

The bushfire season ‘officially’ starts in August but volunteer rural fire crews are already on high alert.

BANK’S LEADERSHIP ON FMD WELCOMED BY LITTLEPROUD Federal Minister for Agriculture and Maranoa David Littleproud has welcomed news the nation's largest agri-lender, NAB, will allow farmers to offset their Farm Management Deposits against their loans.

NAB has also announced it will no longer charge penalty interest payments on farmers who fall into default on their loans.

Farm Management Deposits allow farmers to remove money from their taxable income during good years, to later use during tough times.

Mr Littleproud had called for banks to allow farmers to use these deposits as offsets against their loans the same as many people use an everyday offset account which offsets interest on their home loan.

Only one bank in Australia, Rural Bank, had offered farmers the chance to use their FMD as an offset against their loan, despite the Coalition Government changing the law to allow it in 2016, and also doubling the amount a farmer could hold in their FMD to $800,000.

Mr Littleproud had called for the big banks to get on board and show some leadership for farmers facing drought and had repeated his call at his recent Drought Roundtable in Canberra.

"This is fantastic news for Aussie farmers," he said this week.

"One in three farmers banks with NAB so this change has the potential to help a lot of families.

"This is an investment in agriculture's future and farmers can now vote with their wallets.

"I hope other Aussie banks follow NAB's lead and get on board.

"Last week foreign-owned Rabobank turned up its nose at Aussie farmers, ruling out an FMD offset product.

"You have to ask how serious that bank is about agriculture in Australia. It's fantastic an Aussie owned bank has shown a social conscience and led from the front.

"If you're a farmer whose bank doesn't offer an FMD offset, you can tell them to bugger off because there are banks now which do.

"I also congratulate NAB on removing penalty interest when a farmer defaults on a payment during drought.

"I call for other banks to do the same.

"But it's also an opportunity for the banking sector to reassess penalty interest as a whole because I don't think the charge truly reflects the cost to the bank." ●

BY JEREMY SOLLARS In what might be a Queensland town planning record the Southern Downs Regional Council has approved a major extension to the Defiance maize mill in Warwick a matter of weeks after an application was lodged by New Zealand owner Corson.

As reported in the Free Times in our June 21 edition Corson lodged a development application with the council the previous week, seeking approval to construct six new 1800-tonne silos and a new intake pit on the western side of its Churchill Drive site.

The company currently stores quantities of corn off-site before processing and wants to expand its on-site storage to avoid double handling. It is also in the process of purchasing part of the adjoining rail corridor from Queensland Rail.

As the development application was a major 'material change of use for a high impact industry' it was 'impact assessable', meaning it had to be put on public display for 15 working days, with the community

able to make submissions for and against.

Impact assessable applications normally go before councillors for approval at a general meeting - and can take up to a year or more to be assessed by officers,

depending on their complexity - but in the case of the Corson application it was approved by council officers on Tuesday 10 July, about a fortnight after the public display period closed.

It is understood the approval was delegated to the officers as no public submissions were made either for or against.

The mill produces a variety of corn products, including those used for breakfast cereals such as Corn Flakes and snack foods, along with semolina, polenta and maize flour.

Corson has said the new silos are expected to be in place by the end of November this year and the expansion will create up to five extra jobs at the mill, originally built as a flour mill in 1874.

Corson purchased the mill in 2003 and it currently employs around 20 staff, operating in three shifts 24 hours a day. ●

DROUGHT BITES HARD ON NATIONAL PARK In yet another indication of the severity of the drought afflicting the region Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has closed Girraween National Park south of Stanthorpe to camping due to water shortages, "until further notice".

A statement released by QPWS last week said the park will remain open for day visitors.

"Bald Rock Creek, the water supply for Girraween National Park, has stopped

flowing and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is currently using water conservation measures to help retain a water supply for park staff and visitors during the drought conditions," the statement said.

"Girraween National Park will remain open for all types of day use, and remote walkers will still be able to camp if they have a valid camping permit.

"Park visitors are reminded that the Granite Belt region offers a wide range of

private accommodation.

"The reopening of the camping areas is dependent on rainfall, and will occur when water levels return to a level where pumping can resume.

"Campers are eligible for a credit or refund if they have permits for periods after the closure date.

Folks are literally coming from far and wide to take a look at Stanthorpe's Big Thermometer which is now functional in Rotary Park and proving a real winner for both tourists and locals.

Steering Committee chair - and Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce Vice President - Mick Spiller said he was blown away last weekend by out of towners who made the trip to Stanthorpe just to see the new attraction for themselves.

"There was a guy there from Maryborough early on Sunday morning and we also had a family from Brisbane who drove down to have a look and take some photos with their kids," Mick told the Free Times this week.

"The response has been huge - locals are

saying they are just so overwhelmed and excited we've finally got there.

"This project has been talked about for the last 20 years."

Mick said the Chamber - which drove the project along - is now working with the Southern Downs Regional Council and Rotary to finish landscaping around Stanthorpe's latest icon.

He said his only stipulation when asked by the Chamber to coordinate the project two years ago was that it be "designed and built by locals", paying particular tribute to Stanthorpe tradesman Albert Piper, whom he described as a "master craftsman", and volunteer helper Peter Ingal.

Mick also made a special mention of local artist David Ball who produced the design drawings for the Big Thermometer, which features locally sourced and donated

granite facing and alloy for the plaques lining the pathway.

The plaques are a fundraising feature of the structure and are still available at a cost of $100 for a family plaque and $200 for businesses.

The overall project cost was $150,000, with $90,000 of that coming from the Southern Downs Regional Council and the remainder from sales of the plaques, community contributions and grants.

Mick Spiller said locals and tourists could do themselves a favour and take in the sight of the Big Thermometer at night, as well as during the day.

"It's a real eye-opener at night, with the lighting going up through the centre," he said.

"It really is spectacular." ●

APPEAL TO START An appeal against his murder conviction

by Warwick man Vincent O'Dempsey was due to commence in the Queensland Court of Appeal today, Thursday 26 July.

O'Dempsey and co-accused Garry Dubois were convicted in November 2016 of the cold case murders of Barbara McCulkin and her young daughters Vicki and Leanne in 1974.

Both were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Dubois is currently awaiting the outcome of his own appeal against his conviction, which was heard in late June. The Court of Appeal reserved its judgement.

The Federal Government plans to create an online health profile for all Australians by the end of 2018 unless individuals choose to opt out.

The online profiles will contain information including pathology and diagnosis, allergies, treatments, medicines and "emergency department event summaries".

NINE-DAY FORTNIGHT UNDER THREAT

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council remains locked in a conflict with unions primarily over its proposed '19-day month' condition for new employees.

The council has been in negotiation in recent months with a range of unions representing its 360-strong workforce over new Enterprise Bargaining Agreements.

Agreements have been reached with those unions representing the council's 'outdoor' workforce but talks with the Services Union, which represents the council's white collar employees, have ground to a halt.

The council wants to strip away the nine-day fortnight arrangement for new employees and replace it with a 19-day month but the Services Union is digging in its heels, saying the nine-day fortnight is a valuable condition of employment for both existing and new employees.

Existing staff have the option of keeping their nine-day fortnight or moving to a 19-day month.

A report to this month's general council meeting held in Stanthorpe yesterday, Wednesday 25 July, states that an "in principle" new enterprise agreement was reached for outdoor employees, with 91 per cent of those staff who participated in a recent ballot voting in favour of the proposed agreement.

But the report states that no agreement has yet been reached with 'Stream A' employees - those in administration and professional white collar roles.

Further hearings are expected to be held by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission in the coming months and it is possible no agreement may be reached by the end of this year.

"The Services Union have advised

that the position of their members is unchanged and that there is no support for Council's proposal to introduce a 19 day month for new employees," the report states.

The report to councillors does not detail pay rises agreed on or proposed, but as reported in the Free Times in May unions were requesting a 3.5 per cent increase for all council employees.

White collar staff have already

The report also shows staffing levels at the council have begun to creep back up after reaching a low point in mid-2016.

The council had trumpeted a reduction in staff as one of the reasons for its financial improvements in the past couple of years, with numbers peaking at 379.8 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers at the end of June 2012, dropping to 331.02 at the end of June 2016.

The number of FTE positions at the end of last financial year on 30 June 2018 was well up since 2016, sitting at 361.67.

Figures in the report show 89.44 per cent of the council's workforce is classed as permanent, 7.53 per cent are temporary and 3.03 per cent are casual employees.

At the end of the June 2018 quarter the council's 'separation rate' - the rate at which workers are leaving the organisation - was at 14.5 per cent, up from 13.1 per cent at the end of the March quarter.

The separation rate at the end of June was highest in the Engineering Services directorate at 5.3 per cent, followed by Executive Services (4 per cent) and Planning, Environment and Corporate Services (2.3 per cent). â—?

LIBRARY OPTIONS ARE ON THE TABLE

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council is recruiting for new senior managers following the departure of two long-time directors this year.

Former Director of Engineering Services Peter See and former Director of Planning, Environment and Corporate Services Ken Harris both left the council in recent months and the council is using national recruitment firm McArthur to source replacements.

But a management restructure appears to be in the wings, with the council changing Mr Harris and Mr See's former job titles and descriptions, and adding a third director's position for which it is also now actively recruiting.

Currently advertised are positions for a Director of Corporate and Community Services, a Director of Infrastructure Services and a new Director of Sustainable Development.

Job descriptions on McArthur's website appear to outline a significant executive role restructure, summarised as follows: · Director of Corporate and Community Services - responsible for finance, IT/GPS, governance, customer service, property management and all commercial and business activities across the council, including the Warwick Saleyards, aerodromes, community housing and "recreational amenities". · Director of Infrastructure Services responsible for engineering, water and

Future options for the re-location of the Stanthorpe Library were due to be discussed

by Southern Downs councillors at their July general meeting in Stanthorpe yesterday, Wednesday 25 July.

The council commissioned consultants Complete Urban in March to undertake a study on the Library, which needs to move to allow for a planned expansion of the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery, currently sharing space with the Library in Weeroona Park.

Complete Urban came up with a range of options, two of which involve re-locating existing areas within the Stanthorpe Civic Centre opposite Weeroona Park to accommodate the Library.

Other options are the construction of a new library building adjoining the Civic Centre or expansion of the existing building in the park.

The cost estimates are summarised as follows · New single-storey library in Civic Centre - re-locate Supper Room to Exhibition Space - $2,024,852 · New two-storey library, Civic Centre Exhibition Space (re-locate Bar to Supper Room) - $2,765,042 · Build new single-storey library adjoining

Civic Centre - $1,806,000 · Expand existing library in Weeroona Park - $1,625,060 Councillors were not expected to make a final decision at this week's meeting, with officers recommending a public consultation exercise be carried out to gauge community views on the four options.

Stanthorpe locals earlier this year expressed concern at what they said was a lack of consultation by the council over the future of their Library.

Many have pointed out that the original library was inside the Civic Centre and that the current library was "purpose-built" in Weeroona Park in the late 1980s to improve public access.

Some on social media have expressed concern about access to the Civic Centre for the elderly and the disabled and parking.

It has also been rumoured that the move is part of a longer-term council plan to shut down the Stanthorpe council chambers in the Civic Centre and move all of its administration functions in the town to its Warwick headquarters.

WATER TARGET HIT AND MISS

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Adherence to the Southern Downs Regional Council's town water use target of a maximum of 200 litres per person per day was mixed across local towns and villages in June.

A report presented to councillors at yesterday's July general meeting in Stanthorpe shows that while consumption in Stanthorpe and Killarney for the month of June was down compared to June 2017, it was still well over the 200 litre per day target, with Stanthorpe residents using around 275 litres and around 320 in

Killarney.

Warwick's performance fared a little better, with about 250 litres a day being used, compared to well over 300 litres a day in June last year.

The other two communities to exceed the 200 litre per day target for June 2018 were Leyburn, at just over 300 litres, and Pratten on just under 250 litres.

The lowest daily consumption per person per day for June 2018 was at Allora and Yangan, where residents on average used around 180 litres per day.

Wallangarra and Dalveen came in just under the 200 litre mark for June 2018,

while residents at Karara used about 125 litres of their non-potable water a day.

But if the council gets its way Karara won't have a reticulated water supply for much longer anyway, with councillors deciding at their June meeting to scrap the system, which up until now has delivered non-drinking water to the village's homes from Canal Creek.

Mayor Tracy Dobie was due to meet with Karara residents on Tuesday of this week at the Karara Hall after locals demanded the decision be overturned, saying they use the water for both internal and external purposes, noting it is not

LACHIE TURNING TYRES AT V8 SUPERCARS Beaurepaires Warwick tyre technician Lachie Turner spent from last Thursday to Sunday changing tyres at the V8 Supercars Australia event held at Queensland Raceways at Willowbank.

TIGERS ROAR FOR THEIR CENTENARY It is all systems go at Rugby League Park this week as the Tenterfield Tigers committee pull together the final touches for the big 100 year Tiger celebration this weekend.

With the looming centennial celebrations I decided to take a look back through the Tigers book that was produced to celebrate 70 years of the Tigers on the Prowl. This is a club with a proud history and there are plenty of interesting articles in the book as the Tigers history from 1918 to 1988 is chronicled. It notes that in 1918 a decision was made following a public meeting to play a competition between two Tenterfield sides, Wallabies and Kangaroos and interestingly a team from Wallangarra and they would play the newly minted rugby league rules. History shows the first game was played at Queen's park on July 13 between the Wallabies and Kangaroos and was refereed by Harry Stewart.

If you think controversy only rages in league in the present era then you will be surprised to know that on August 11, 1918 players were forced "to motor to Wallangarra" after moves to disallow a game between Stanthorpe and Tenterfield scheduled to be played at Queen's Park was successful. -Casey HIDDEN GEM REVEALED FOR BIG CHILL The Carnell Raceway depending on your view is either a breeding ground for noise pollution or according to the many people who turned out for the Big Chill #19 last weekend a hidden gem. Members of the QEMSC (Queensland Early Motor Cycle Sports Club) were thrilled with the chilly Stanthorpe weather and the success of their 19th annual event last weekend.

Over 85 riders took part and were joined by a big contingent of supporters and spectators.

Enthusiasts travelled form NSW South Australia and Victoria as well as from North Queensland to attend. The Big Chill has grown from humble beginnings to a popular date on the riders' calendar.

Eleven true "enthusiasts" for want of a better word got into the spirit of things by completing the Frozen Willie Ride to attend - that is from Toowoomba showgrounds via Leyburn Gore and other icy places they were too cold to easily recall enroute to Stanthorpe in the early hours of Sunday morning - slightly crazy me thinks, but they assured me it was enjoyable.

There were certainly some impressive machines on display as riders put them through their paces during the nine event programme. The Big Chill - a great concept, a great use of the Carnell facility and another lesser heralded promotion of the Southern Downs. Thanks for your hospitality and long may you continue to Chill ladies and gentlemen.

TANNY TRIPLES SUCCESS Tannymorel Bowls Club hosted their freetimes.com.au

Some of the side car action from Carnell Raceway as Peter Searle and Phillip Brown put their 1978 Horner Teapot through its paces in an early event during the Big Chill #19. monthly Triples event last Thursday and there was an excellent roll up for the round sponsored by Terry Banditt, a member who also puts the club first.

Coming away winner was the combination of Edwin Welsh Trev Wright and Steve Tyter.

Runners up were Pedro Collis, Marg Wright and Billy Gibson.

Picking up the horses butt award was the team of Keo Mooney, Linda Hartley and Prickles. In Round One the ventual winners had a 20-10 win over theire opponents Pat Gainey, Matt Shepherd and Mick O'Leary and followed up in the Skips only round with a big win over Grumpy (24-9) The Greens again played very well and were presented in great shape. Thanks to everyone for another great day.

On Saturday the troops were back on the green for a social game.

Sue (skiting) Butz was in blistering form giving Mick O'Leary a lesson in bowls along the way. Mick of course is adamant he was playing left handed.

Lyn Coleman, Gordie Assay Sue Butz and Pete Gynther had a 22-L win over Ash Coleman Walshy Matt Shep and Mick O'Leary.

In a one-sided affair Shep says they would not have scored if not for his performance. Keep ticklin' that kitty boys and girls.

FOUR AT THE TOP - NO ROOM FOR MORE It was a little congested at the end of the Single Stroke event at the Stanthorpe Golf Club last Saturday. After the round, sponsored by green keeper Bill Pyne four players returned the best score of nett 70. Organisers were diving for their abacuses, calculators and all ten fingers as the count back went into over driver to determine a winner. There must be a winner and after the fourth count Michael O'Brien came up trumps. Scott Constable received the consolation runners up spot and also a clutch of minor prizes which included nearest the pin at 12 and second shot pro-pins at 5/14 and 9/18. Things were a little less chaotic in the ladies stroke event. A set of new clubs are obviously working a treat for Helen Jones who carded a winning score of 74. Linda Kelly faced a count back with Tric Fittock for the runners up spot with both finishing on 76.LInda got the nod and Tric received a ball in the run down.

She also had the best approach shot for the ladies at 17.

Stephen Kay picked up the pin shot at three, the birdies' nest at three and a ball in the run down. Len Leigh had best pin shot at 17. Fiona Kelly held the ladies' pin at three and there were no takers for the pin at 12.

Players will be hoping for the excellent conditions to continue on Saturday for the 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Granite Gardens Cottages. It is the last event in the month of July (where has that month gone?) so it will be a shot gun at 11.45 am and the BBQ will be in full swing.

There is a time sheet on the board at the club house. Numbers are required for catering

so organise your playing partner and please put your name on the sheet. To allow the starter to arrange tee positions players are asked to register by 11.30am.

INGLEWOOD SSAA CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS IN JULY AND AGM It was a busy day down on the Inglewood SSAA range on Sunday. The SSAA Inglewood Branch held their annual Christmas in July dinner and novelty shoot and also their AGM. Ray White takes over as President. Ray dudgeon takes on the duties of Vice President and Safety Officer. Stephanie Dudgeon was elected Treasurer and Tom Donald continues as Secretary. Member for Southern Downs, James Lister was named as the club's Honorary Patron and was on hand to congratulate the winners including junior winner Tai Patterson.

The meeting also decided to hold pistol events weekly.

CONDITIONS CUT NUMBERS Winter conditions appear to be having an impact on the numbers on the Croquet court in Stanthorpe. Numbers were down again on Tuesday morning for the Association games.

Pat Schnoor and Jenny Tunbridge teamed up to take on Margaret Dickenson. Tunbridge continued her good vein of form from the previous week and had a break of hoops in a row. It set up the win for a 21-18 win over Margaret Dickenson. Andrea Denkewitz had a convincing 23-14 win in her singles match against Effey Russell.

Bron Southgate made a welcome return to the Ricochet ranks on Thursday was quickly backed into the swing of things. She partnered Margaret Dickenson against Bill Golding and Liz Ellway. Bill Golding was certainly on song with his accuracy as he and his partner skipped away with a 26-21 win.

Andrea Denkewitz and Val Fancourt teamed up to play John Draper win what was a very close game with neither team able to get more than a one or two point advantage for most of the game. In the end it was Andrea and Val who had a narrow two point win final score 22-20.

The Gateball crew assembled on Friday morning with Bill Golding, Andrea Denkewitz, Jenny Tunbridge and John Draper combining in Team One. Their opponents in Team Two were Pat Schnoor, Val Fancourt and Margaret Dickenson.

In the opening game, Team Two made good use of the final minutes of the game preventing their opponents from having a last shot at them. The strategy paying dividends when they secured a 13-9 win. The winning form continued in the second game as Game Two claimed a 17-7 win. Margret Dickenson played some wonderful shots and on one occasion sparked all the opposition's balls off the court.

Following the break the conditions got the better of the group and midway through Game Three play was abandoned. Team One at the time held a handy 12-7 lead.

TOPSY TURVY TRL While the top five in the TRL A grade competition is a done deal any thoughts that the TRL Minor Premiership was done and dusted were shot out of the water at the completion of round 16. Sixth placed Gatton threw the cat among the pigeons when they scored a nail biting two point win over one of the competition favourites Valleys.

Last season's premiers Dalby who are also in the mix again in 2018 scored a convincing win in their road trip to Goondiwindi and now sit just two points behind competition leaders Wattles who along with fifth placed Cowboys had a bye last round.

Highfields also had a big win over Brothers and have drawn ahead of Valleys.

The games this weekend will have an even bigger impact on the race for the Minor premiership. Wattles look to go into their game against Dalby with a stronger form line and with the minor premiership on the line will surely take their A game on the road.

Highfields have a bye this weekend as they prepare for their final fixture game of the season against Wattles next week.

The Warwick Cowboys travel to Herb Steinhort Oval this weekend and are sure to face a fired up Valleys side after the hosts suffered an unexpected loss to Gatton last weekend. With finals football only a couple of weeks away all five sides will come out firing in what is shaping as an exciting round of football.

GREMLINS BANK ANOTHER WIN The Stanthorpe Gremlins notched up another good win in the Clive Berghofer Second Division competition last weekend.

With the 34-12 win over Valleys last round Stanthorpe now sit in second place on the competition ladder with 16 points. Gatton lead the race to the finals on 20 points but have played one game more than the Gremlins. The Gremlins will wrap up theire season with two tough away games playing Dalby in both round 17 and 18 but are assured of a place in the finals. It is a terrific result for this young side in their first foray into the TRL competition and the fun is not over yet.

CRISP AND CRUNCHY NO WORRYFOR SPORTERS Conditions under foot were crisp and crunchy under foot on Sunday morning as another good field teed off in the Sporters competition and another big Stanthorpe front began to thaw. Dick Hilton seemed quite at home in the conditions and played well returning the best score of the day. Dick has been standing in for the MIA Sporters President Ray Thorn for the past few weeks. El Presidente is understood to be still swanning around in the warmth of the north. His stand in was therefore chuffed to announced himself as Sunday's winner and even happier to be taking home the winner's meat tray.

Runner up Tony Steele collected a ball for his efforts as did Ivan Juriss and John Walsh in the run downs. The pin shots at three and 17 and the pro-pin went unclaimed. Maybe the cool weather is taking its toll after all.

Paul Byrnes had the best gross score of the day, 43 for the nine holes.

Barry Jones and Brian Westerhout were smiling as they left with meat trays some luck in thee raffles. Both were last seen disappearing into the distance looking for a BBQ. Despite the chilly conditions there have been excellent fields recently at Sporters and it's on again this Sunday with tee off from 8.00am.

FINALS READY TO COME A KNOCKING The NRL finals are all but knocking on the door and if you are in a tipping competition now is the time to make a move on the leaders or cement your spot in front.

Congratulations if you are in the lead in your tipping competition this season and please leave your crystal ball at my front door it will be well cared for during the remainder of the season.

The only thing we can be sure of is that the upsets and shocks will continue. Round 20 looks as tough as any that have preceded it. â—?
