A Pakenham boy’s phenomenal recovery after ingesting 30 fridge magnets has been hailed as a miracle. Noah, 3, was rushed to Monash Children’s Hospital after he fell to the ground, curling up in a foetal position and withering in pain. For his parents, Fiso and Christelle Lefau, it was one of the most frightening experiences of their lives. “My wife and I were at work at the time when we received a call from the in-laws,” Mr Lefau said. “It was a huge panic - I had to stop what was I doing and rush to Casey Hospital.” Upon being X-rayed and assessed, specialists discovered a cluster of magnetic beads in Noah’s stomach. He was likely hours from death. It became apparent that Noah had climbed on a chair in the family’s Edenbrook Estate home, pulling the magnets from the fridge and swallowing them. In order to save his life, the three-year-old underwent six hours of emergency surgery to have the metal balls removed. Surgeons had to remove parts of Noah’s intestine and repair 10 holes in his gut, caused by the magnets connecting inside his body. “You know how inquisitive three-year-old’s are at that stage in their life,” he said. “We’re just so thankful he got through it.” According to Mr Lefau, Noah was showing signs of sickness for several days prior to his collapse. The family took him to a 24 hour general practitioner in Berwick, where he was prescribed an anti-nausea pill.
“The doctor said to give him a tablet and put it under his tongue and the next day he was eating and running around and he seemed okay,” he said. Several days later, he collapsed.Since the incident, Noah has made a remarkable recovery. “He’s doing awesome - he’s in a great place,” his mother, Mrs Lefau said. The parents have issued a stern warning to others about the dangers of small, metallic objects. “Just take precaution when buying toys and items with little magnets and keep them out of reach of the children because it could be fatal,” Mr Lefau said. In a cruel twist, the parents have been condemned as a result of the accident. They were both anticipating some backlash, despite the unpredictable nature of toddlers.”We knew we were going to cop a differing of opinion and some criticism,” he said. “I told Christelle to be prepared for it.” The warning comes as statistics from the Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit show that an average of 38 Victorian children present to hospital emergency departments every year with a magnet related injury. General Manager of Kidsafe Victoria Jason Chambers revealed children were at particular risk of magnet-related injuries due to their natural curiosity and lack of awareness of the dangers. “Children often explore their environments by placing things in their mouths. Small magnets can be accessed from a range of common household items including children’s toys, fridge magnets, jewellery and objects like keyrings,” Mr Chambers said.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Maree Cullinan, manager of the Balla Balla Community Centre, Cranbourne
THREE ‌ ways to save on your weekly shop
1
Shop at the right time Showing up at the shop at the end of the day - can make a huge difference to your hip pocket. Stores want to get rid of perishable items (like meat) at the end of the day. This means that they often put out a 'reduced' section in the bakery, one in the chilled section and sometimes one in the fruit and vegetable section.
2
Stop splurging Always eat before you go grocery shopping. If you have a full stomach, you'll buy less and are also less likely to select fatty, sugary foods. You should also get into the habit of carrying a healthy snack (like nuts or dried fruit) wherever you go so that you don't splurge on takeaway meals when you're out.
3
Check out grocery clearance stores Clearance outlets such as NQR offer savings of up to 80 per cent off items. What's on offer is made up of excess stock, discontinued lines and cancelled supermarket orders.

Today, the family feels fortunate that Macquarie University Hospital offered Jack his best option in Gamma Knife surgery. "Just last month we had to put our family home in Berwick on the market to help us manage over $500000 of debt that we have amassed over the past seven years since Jack's AVM diagnosis," said Ms Ottens.
Ms Ottens said she was grateful to the team at Macquarie University Hospital for giving "us some hope for Jack's future." "When Jack was first diagnosed with AVM, we were told he would be unlikely to live past his tenth birthday. "Without the Doug and Monique Thompson Fund, we would have never been able to even consider Gamma Knife surgery as a possible treatment option for Jack," she said.
MP rallies behind club’s ‘changing’ needs By Rowan Forster Federal MP Jason Wood has hurled his support behind the Pakenham Football and Netball Club, describing the ageing facilities as "totally unacceptable". He has urged Cardinia Shire to pursue an application on behalf of the club, to acquire a cash splash under the Turnbull Government's Building Better Regions fund. During a recent visit alongside budding netball players, Mr Wood watched as about 100 young girls languished in torrential rain while waiting to get changed. "The seniors club needs a major upgrade and renovations but the real eye-opener was the junior teams," Mr Wood said. "They've got no showers, no facilities and it was bucketing down with rain. Once their training finished, they were lining up outside in the rain, waiting to get changed - and that is totally unacceptable." Despite the lacklustre infrastructure, the LaTrobe MP said the enthusiasm shared by the club's members was remarkable.
Players alongside Jason Wood, waiting in torrential rain to get changed. 183188 "It's a fantastic club and the enthusiasm is quite incredible considering how bad the facilities are," he said. "It is pretty average that this hasn't been addressed." Pakenham Football Club president Travis Hamilton has also been outspoken about the club's lack of facilities - citing serious safety concerns for the girls, who are often inadvertently walked-in on while changing. A mother, who did not want to be identified to prevent embarrassing her daughter, said she was "quite shaken" after accidentally being exposed during a weekend changeover several weeks ago.
She said it was "disgraceful" that the club's desperate pleas to Cardinia Shire for support had fallen on deaf ears. "It seems like one of those situations where something horrible has to happen before the message is received and something is done," she told the Gazette. "It's deterring the kids from competing - and that's a horrible thing for them in their younger years." In a statement, Cardinia Shire touted the This Girl Can initiative and said it had allocated funding for several reserves to be upgraded - including Toomuc Reserve - but a formal announcement is yet to be made. "Much like the rest of Australia, our shire is experiencing an increase in female participation in football and cricket - which is fantastic," council's acting general manager for community wellbeing, Stephen Sparrow said. "Council has already allocated funding for the provision of upgrading a number of facilities to make them suitable for all ages and genders - Toomuc Reserve South pavilion being one of these facilities."

By Brendan Rees When Ian and Sue Spedding left their cars unlocked in their carport, they least expected them to be broken into. However CCTV has captured the moment a brazen thief allegedly walked down their Darling Way driveway in Narre Warren during the early hours of the morning on Thursday 19 July before the man his seen rummaging through Mr Spedding's Mitsubishi sedan. "This guy was so damn casual," said Ms Spedding. "He's literally strolled down the drive." She said the footage showed the man allegedly wearing gloves and trying to enter her car but was deterred when he saw a flashing red light. "He's obviously thought 'Oh that might be alarmed I'm not going there.'" According to Ms Spedding, the camera filmed the man rifling through Mr Spedding's car where he allegedly stole a mobile phone. "He's in Ian's car for a good two minutes." Mr Spedding realised someone had been through his car when he found his water bottle sitting in the foot well as he was about to drive to work. Ms Spedding was still trying to wrap her head around the incident. "Everybody said to us 'Don't you lock your car?' But it's in your carport by your house, you shouldn't have to lock it," she said. "Locked or not it doesn't give him the right to come down and do what he's done." Narre Warren police are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Eleven-year-old Jack Ottens - who has been battling a rare brain condition since he was born - dreams of one day working for NASA. The Berwick boy has a condition called deepbrain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which affects blood vessels in his brain and can cause serious bleeding without warning. Jack has now become one of Australia's youngest patients ever to have Gamma Knife surgery at Macquarie University Hospital on Tuesday 24 July which included one of Australia's leading neurosurgery and neurosciences programs, "While smaller AVMs can be removed surgically, larger ones and those buried deeper in the brain are now best treated by Gamma Knife," said Dr John Fuller, the Macquarie University Hospital surgeon who performed Jack's treatment, along with his team. Jack was born with Complex Deep-Brain AVM, which was only discovered when he was five years old as he underwent an MRI scan after a serious head injury. He initially had linear accelerator (LINAC) radiosurgery, which obliterated most, but not all, of the mass. After enduring many health complications as a result of his AVM and treatment, doctors knew the risks were too high to repeat LINAC radiosurgery. An AVM is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain or spine, with haemorrhage a major risk. Jack has already experienced two such haemorrhages. After Jack's AVM diagnosis, his mother, Chris-

Job skills expo’s the go By Brendan Rees Students of Berwick College have begun mapping out their future after the school hosted a careers expo on Thursday 19 July. Years 9-12 students toured the 40 exhibitors on hand from universities, TAFEs, apprenticeship groups, local employers and other private providers. Organisations on display included Academy of Information Technology, William Angliss, Moorabbin Fying Service, Richmond Institute of Sport, Ministry of Dance, Federation University and more. Other career options were the Australian Defence Force, Victoria Police, and the Country Fire Authority. Careers team leader Kate Rolls said the students enjoyed finding out about potential pathways as well as looking into part-time job options while they were still at school. “The atmosphere was electric, thanks to some very engaged students and Berwick College’s resident D.J., Jakob Searles, who was kind enough to play the latest chart-toppers which all students really enjoyed,” she said. Year 12 student Kayla said the expo helped clarify her options after completing school. “It allowed me to compare all of the different universities and I now feel confident about my university of choice,” she said. Year 12 student Hayden said: “I didn’t realise how many trades the Department of Defence offer - they were really informative” Abbey, of Year 11 said: “I collected so many brochures, and I didn’t realise Box Hill TAFE had so many courses on offer.” Year 9 student Jacinta said she was surprised by the amount of providers available with “awesome opportunities we have postschool.”

Damaging trees risks A group of Narre Warren residents is calling on Casey Council to remove huge London Plane trees which they say is ruining their properties. A petition of 52 signatures was presented to council from residents of Penhurst Street and surrounding streets at a 17 July meeting, asking for the trees to be removed and replaced with more suitable ones. According to head petitioner Ken Binaisse, the trees were planted in about 1995 and have since damaged footpaths, kerb and channelling and private properties due to the invasive root system. Mr Binaisse said council had been bleeding ratepayers with "forever ongoing costs" of footpath repairs over the years. "This must be running into hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars each year." "It's not just here it's throughout the municipality," he said. Mr Binaisse, whose own brick garden beds and concrete mow strip had begun to lift and crack, said the intrusion of roots was visible on the surface of footpaths and front yards of some houses: "Once it gets into private property that is ridiculous." "I've got a neighbour down the road that will testify under oath that the contractor did not remove the roots under the footpath next door to him; that one's all over the shop again already, five years later." He said if council didn't take the matter se-
riously "this problem is going to continue." Mr Binaisse believes council chose to plant the trees because not only do they provide a beautiful streetscape but will also withstand severe pruning. "They're beautiful trees but they're just too over powering. I'm asking for removal because of root damage - they're so aggressive." The trees have a potential to grow to mammoth specimens with a height of 30 metres and canopy span of 20 metres. Mr Binaisse said the trees were also known to cause allergic reactions, claiming his 92 year-old neighbour was forced to have her evaporative cooling system cleaned due to the tree's seed due to the presence of the tree's seed. Councillors voted for council to investigate the issue at their 17 July meeting with councillor Rosalie Crestani saying: "We've got a rigorous program that deals with problem trees but now we're dealing with legacy trees so we have to go back and fix some problems." She said it was a balancing act of ensuring there was enough foliage in the streets as well as addressing any safety concerns residents may have. "It's a representation of a wide sweeping issue across Casey," she added. "London Plane trees are known to cause damage in the city and in other locations." A report will come back to council in November.

Auction helps fight MND Brown Property Group and Henley have joined FightMND’s army to help tackle Motor Neurone Disease. MND is a rare neurological condition that progressively damages the motor neurones or ‘nerves’ in the brain and spinal cord causing the associated muscles to waste away. Former Essendon footballer Neale Daniher has spearheaded a phenomenally successful campaign to raise money for MND research. Daniher suffers from MND and knows the devastating effect the disease can have on sufferers, their family and friends. At present there is no known cure for MND. Brown Property Group has donated a block of land in its Meridian Estate at Clyde North. Henley, with the help of local tradies and suppliers, is building the home. The property will be auctioned, without a reserve, next March.
Mr Daniher visited the building site last week to thank those working on the project. He said the entire team at Fight MND was humbled by the support and generosity of everyone involved in the project. "It is very generous of them all. They are joining the MND army to help find a cure for MDN." Brown Property Group chief operating officer Ryan Pritchard said the company was committed to supporting the community. “We are incredibly proud to welcome the trades and suppliers on site and offer them our sincere thanks and appreciation, who will put their all in building a stunning home to help fight MND.” The home is Henley’s best-selling Emperor 38. The 38 square home features four bedrooms, including a hotel style master suite and three secondary bedrooms upstairs all with walk-in-wardrobes.

Detectives have released digital composite images of three men they wish to speak to in relation to the incident. 183193
Bandits still on the loose By Kyra Gillespie The images of three men believed to be linked to an armed robbery in Berwick earlier this year have been released by Detectives from Crime Command. It’s believed a 25-year-old man arranged to meet with a man known only as ‘MJ’ at Sweeney Reserve in Berwick on Saturday 17 March to purchase cannabis. About 8.45pm that night the victim was met by three men who arrived at the park in a silver VW Passat sedan. The victim then got into the vehicle, where he was greeted by a man who identified himself as MJ. The men asked the victim if he had money for the drugs and pointed a firearm at him when he produced a quantity of cash. The men then demanded the cash and after being given it by the victim, threw him out of the vehicle and drove away. The victim attempted to follow them in his own vehicle, however he lost control and subsequently crashed into a house on Golf Links Drive.
Police were able to obtain details in relation to the earlier armed robbery when called to the scene. The victim was not injured during the armed robbery or collision. No one has been arrested in relation to the incident, however a firearm matching the description of the one used in the armed robbery was located in the Hampton Park area a few days later. Detectives have released digital composite images of three men they wish to speak to in relation to the incident. Two of the men are described as being perceived to be African in appearance while the third is described as being perceived to be of Middle Eastern appearance. Investigators have also released a photo of the firearm that was located. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Submission on honouring the memory of former councillor Mick Morland. As a follow-up to our letter of 2 July, concerning our opposition to the re-naming of a substantial part of Pioneer Park in Berwick, to honour the memory of former councillor Mick Morland, we put forward the following suggestion. We believe, that if adopted, this is an even better means of honouring the memory of a great contributor to the city that he loved and served so well, without impacting on a park that we contend should be left named Pioneer Park, without variation. We believe that, as part of developing Bayview Park, on the former Pioneer Quarry site, the plans include an intended 1001 Steps, somewhat akin to the so called 1000 steps at Ferntree Gully. We realise that the Bayview Park was so named around July 2016 and is an apt name recognising both the former quarry name of Bayview and the sweeping views attained from places in the park. What better way to honour a former mayor, deputy mayor and councillor, whose energy and vision helped to mould the present City of Casey; than from a park overlooking much of his beloved City of Casey, than to name the intended 1001 Steps as the Mick Morland Steps, or if council prefer the Morland 1001 steps. The symbolic reasoning behind this suggestion, include the wide sweeping views from the top of Bayview Park over much of the city that Mick both loved and served also in the fact that the “Mick Morland"? steps will be used by many people, with the resulting potential exposure to Mick’s story. This suggestion is put forward as a viable alternative means of recognising Mick’s contribution to the City of Casey, Rotary and the wider community. Clive and Judy Ellis, Narre Warren North

chosen for a purpose and that purpose is inscribed on the plaque in the grounds of Pioneers Park. To change the name is an insult to the people of the local community, led by Bill Hudson (a councillor and mayor of the City of Berwick), who fought, with other community members, for some seven years to get the land for the people of Berwick. To give the park the name of an individual and, very condescendingly, to recognise those people for whom the park is named by naming a small area within the park, the playground no less, ‘Pioneers Playground’ is an even bigger insult.
By proposing this change of name Mayor Ablett and the City of Casey has, as the editorial said recently ‘done a shocking job at trying to honour one of its greatest contributors’. In addition to that the Casey Council has put the late Councillor Morland’s wife and family in an invidious position. Mick Morland should be honoured by the municipality, but not at the expense of others. To change the name of Pioneers Park is to dishonour and insult the people responsible for the very existence of the park. Geoff Hudson, Longwarry North
RAY’S SAY
Just an insult Re: Pioneers Park Name Change. The proposed renaming of Pioneers Park is an insult to the people of the Berwick Community who contributed to a ‘fighting fund’ which convinced the City of Casey to acquire the old primary school site, and without whom the park would not exist. I have recently re-read the text of the public notice, issued on 28 June, giving notification of its intention to change the name of the ‘locally known’ “Pioneers Park". LOCALLY KNOWN indeed! The name has not come about from common usage. It was proposed by the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society and formally adopted by the City of Casey as the name for the park on the motion of then mayor, Neil Lucas. The name, as I have pointed out before, was

Mark Mathews: Sorry but I wouldn't call it "iconic" it's only been open a short time. It might be an iconic building but that's it. Craig Hookey Monique Italia: Little do they know it's "freeze Out" Tracy Pendlebury Moira Leahy: no good for you better wait till summer. Jarrad White: Pathetic. Christopher Emolution Brent: Should have ensured the venue was completely set up with adequate electrical supply to run heating or cooling for whatever season before opening the venue it's the owners fault his staff are cold. Alice Drew Vanessa Dixon: I'd know that smile anywhere. Kelly: Cafe? Always thought it was a pub... Mairi-Anne Macartney: I've been twice toasty warm inside. Dawn Mendoza Debbie Smith: We will need to rug up.
THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN Thumbs down To all the motorists that don't use their HEAD LIGHTS when the weather conditions make it harder to see them.
Thumbs up To all the tireless volunteers helping rescue animals. It can be a heartbreaking day for many of us.
Thumps down To the women who lets her Dalmatian dog run loose in every bodies front garden in Bellsquarry Avenue, Cranbourne East and doesn't bother to pick up after her dog, just leaves it there for the owners of the houses to pick it up.
Thumbs down To all the drivers who don't have their lights on when driving at dawn, dusk and in fog.
Thumbs down To inpatient drivers. Seriously are you that important you can't be patient?
Thumbs up To the recycle truck driver that was getting out and standing up the bins that were knocked over by kids! Top job.
Thumps down To people making pathetic excuses time after time.

New CEO for Casey Glenn Patterson has been appointed as the new CEO of the City of Casey.
ing teams through challenging environments, Glenn is well qualified to ensure the organisation is able to meet the needs of a community set to grow to half a million." Mr Patterson said he was excited by the challenge of leading the organisation into an exciting future.
"I'm keen to build on Casey's reputation as a leader and innovator in local government and ensure the organisation is able to meet the needs of a community growing to more than half a million residents in the next 20 years," he said. "I can't wait to get stuck in and lead the organisation into an exciting future." Mr Patterson's appointment follows an extensive recruitment process conducted by external firm Davidson. Cr Ablett said it was a highly credential field of candidates and he paid tribute to the interim leadership team. "We are blessed with a hugely talented senior leadership team at Casey who have ensured a smooth transition to new leadership. I am particularly grateful to Steve Dalton and Sheena Frost for acting as CEO." Mr Patterson will start in the position in mid-September.
CommBank gives gift of life By Brendan Rees A Berwick cancer victim's campaign to raise money for clinical cancer trials has received a much-welcomed boost, after Commonwealth Bank donated $10000 to the cause. Effie Atkins began a Dr Hope campaign last year which raises community support to increase the number patients participating in trials of potentially life-saving cancer drugs in the south east. Staff from Commonwealth Bank in Berwick presented Ms Atkins and her husband Tony Atkins with a $10000 cheque at Monash Hospital on Friday 20 July. Ms Atkins said the donation was a generous gift: "With this grant we have now raised over $90000 in the past nine months."
"Mr Andrew Russell and his team at Commonwealth Bank in Berwick have been really wonderful supporters of our campaign over the past year," Ms Atkins said. "They saw an unmet need that may affect every one of us. Some day we may have a mother or sister with cancer, and for whom all standard treatments have failed." Ms Atkins said funds raised will go towards placing another "Clinical Fellow" on the front lines caring for and supervising suitable patients in such trials at Monash Health in Clayton. "In my case my untreatable liver cancer has now been kept dormant for over two years by a 'trial' medication." "I am so encouraged by the CBA gift, I am feeling my batteries re-charged to raise more
Fire crews responded to a raptured gas leak at a residential property in Narre Warren on 18 July. Firefighters from Hallam CFA were called to the Fiona Court address at 11.45am where an excavator had pulled up a domestic gas pipe, causing it to leak. Senior Station Officer Stephen Keating said his crew immediately isolated all ignition sources in the vicinity of the leak by 11.55am prior to a gas company arriving who reinstated the pipe. No one was injured and no further damaged was caused to the property. The scene was deemed safe with police and ambulance also in attendance. Mr Keating reminded people to check the location of gas mains prior to using heavy machinery. "Over longer periods of time you tend to misplace where things are being put in your properties," he said.
Wanted man Branch manager of CBA Berwick Andrew Russell (centre) presents a $10000 cheque to Effie Atkins. Also present was Professor of Oncology Eva Segolov and members of the Clinical Trials Centre team and Deputy Director, Monash Health Foundation at Monash Health Matthew Hannan. Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Micky Revera. The 40-year-old is wanted by police in relation to outstanding warrants for theft of motor vehicle and drug-related offences. Revera is described as about 180cm tall with a solid build, olive complexion, short curly black hair, brown eyes and a scar across his nose. He is known to frequent the Dandenong, Noble Park, Hampton Park and Oakleigh areas. Investigators have released an image of Revera in the hope someone recognises him or has information regarding his current whereabouts. Anyone who sights Revera is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. 12390754-CG27-18
FOCUS ON … TAX
Passionate about success The team at Pakenham’s Patison Partners Accountants and Advisors pride themselves on working with all types of businesses and provide a range of solutions to help companies grow. They are committed to helping clients grow their wealth through using tax effective strategies. “Starting a business, whether buying an existing business or setting up a new business from scratch is an exciting process,” Patison Partners Pakenham Practice Manager Yvonne Pike said. “The most important ingredient for a successful business is a passionate, motivated and committed business owner who can champion success.” However, as Ms Pike explained, ‘the harsh reality is that these factors alone are not enough.’ “In today’s tough economic climate the
steps you take before embarking on a new business venture are critical in determining the result of all your great ideas and talent,” she said. Ms Pike explained that things customers need to consider before embarking on a new business venture include checking the purchase agreement, choosing the right business structure, considering registrations (ABN, GST, PAYG withholding, fringe benefits tax, payroll tax and business name), record keeping, insurance, financing growth, hiring and the business plan. “At Patison Partners we are experts at facilitating this process,” Ms Pike said. Patison Partners Accountants and Advisors are at 3 Cook Drive in Pakenham. For details phone 5941 3322 or visit patison.com.au.

City of Casey has unveiled Glenn Patterson as the council's new chief executive officer, five months after Mike Tyler announced he was suddenly stepping down. Councillors unanimously voted to appoint Mr Patterson at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday evening, 24 July. Mr Patterson brings a wealth of experience serving as CEO at Yarra Ranges Shire Council since 2008, and previously as CEO at Baw Baw Shire Council. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said council was excited by Mr Patterson's vision for guiding the organisation into the future. "Glenn's passion, leadership and vision were clearly evident to Councillors. His extensive experience in local government and his strong commitment to community shone through," said the Mayor. Lions show their support By Nick Creely It was a significant day for the Pakenham Football and Netball Club on Saturday, with the Lions hosting a special fundraiser in support of the Amy Gillett Foundation and the Rich family. The organisation was established in 2006 and was born out of tragedy when Amy Gillett, a champion Australian cyclist was killed while training in Germany with a squad of cyclists. Amy's husband Simon then established the foundation with a number of others, with a vision of eliminating cycling related fatalities. Pakenham members Charlene Rich, and her brother Brandon, put together a special fundraising day in honour of their father Ken - a local police Sergeant - who was tragically struck and killed in a cycling accident on Good Friday last year, and have since been passionate about spreading the road safety message for cyclists. With raffles, competitions, prizes, massages, face painting, Victoria Police cars and plenty more, a monster crowd turned up to show their support and donate to the foundation, with Lions netball president Marg Jones blown away by how the day unfolded. "(I'm) so incredibly proud as a club that we could support the Rich family with this event, in loving memory of their Dad, Ken," she said. "(We are) privileged to be involved at Pakenham with the amazing people we have as players, families, coaches, life members, sponsors and supporters who showed incredible generosity. "On behalf of the club, our heartfelt thanks to everyone that attended and contributed." Upstairs in the social rooms, the club put on a special afternoon tea, with guest speakers from the Foundation and by Victoria Police sharing the message about road safety. Amy Gillett Foundation director Matt Dimattina was "humbled" to have been a part of the day, and said the club and its dedication to the fundraiser left him almost speechless. "I was stunned to see the size of the crowd - Charlene, who has been front of centre and had a lot to do with the organisation of the day, conducted herself admirably, so I was really humbled to be there to be honest," he said. "I said it during my speech and I meant it, the courage is extraordinary of the entire Rich clan, in the face of such personal tragedy, to stand up and take a positive and ensure no one else has to suffer the same things." Dimattina said that behind the scenes the Foundation is working hard to implement new laws, and hopes they can continue to make a difference.

"We do it in a number of ways - the focus is on research and developing programs that will be effective, and we communicate that with both cyclists and motorists on what they can do. "One of our biggest programs is the 'a metre matters' program, where we work with governments all across Australia to implement minimum overtaking distance legislation, and in doing so, raising awareness. "The metre matters campaign was established in 2009, and we knew it would take some time to implement and for governments to make the change. "We've had great success right across the country, and in the legislation is now in place in every state but Victoria, and we're working hard on that." A million reasons to smile By Hayley Wildes

Warriors’ march continues Round 17 of Big V basketball was an important one for the Pakenham Warriors as they picked some crucial wins. The Division 2 men knocked off the second-placed Coburg Giants at home on Sunday afternoon in a terrific team performance. The Warriors took control in the second half as Brad Szalek (17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Joshua Bjelan (16 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists) powered Pakenham to an unlikely 78-73 win. The Warriors (10-10) sit eighth on the ladder. The Youth League 2 men had a massive round of basketball and they didn't disappoint, claiming two vital wins. On Saturday night, the Warriors travelled to Mornington and defeated the Breakers, 7969. Pakenham was never troubled as Thomas Greer (18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals) and Matt Berkec (14 rebounds, 9 points, 3 assists) impressed on both ends of court. On Sunday at home, the Warriors had a season-defining match-up against the secondplaced Collingwood All Stars. With the chance to jump above the All Stars with a win, the Warriors claimed a thrilling one-point victory, 80-79. Despite trailing by three points after three quarters, the Warriors found another gear in the fourth. Lee Belton was the hero as he drained the game-winning corner triple with just seconds remaining to send the home crowd into hysterics. Greer (21 points, 12 rebounds) was again tremendous, while Belton finished with 16 points, including four triples. The Warriors (17-6) are riding an eightgame winning streak and sit second on the ladder. The Youth League 2 women fell to the Western Port Steelers on the road on Saturday afternoon, 59-51. The Warriors were slow out of the gates and pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
could only muster 17 points in the first half. They were unable to overcome that slow start, despite an improved offensive performance in the second half. Just three assists for the game highlighted the Warriors' struggles on offence. Beth Quadara (11 points) top scored for Pakenham. The loss, their second in a row, didn't effect Pakenham's (12-5) ladder position as they still sit second. In the final round of the Big V regular season, there will be plenty of action at Cardinia Life over the weekend. Saturday night sees a Youth League 2 and Division 2 men double-header tip off at Cardinia Life from 6pm. While on Sunday, another double-header sees the Youth League 2 women and Division 2 men take on the Southern Peninsula Sharks and Altona Gators from 2pm at Cardinia Life. 12394765-CG31-18

a metropolitan Saturday race meet. "It vindicates that Pakenham's facilities are that good that the racing industry vests in Pakenham the opportunity to run a metropolitan Saturday," he said. "There's only two other country clubs that are afforded that privilege and, by that statis-
tic alone, it does rate the Pakenham facility at metropolitan standard and far above other country clubs in Victoria. "Pakenham is at the front and centre." For more information regarding Pakenham Cup Day, head to www.pakenhamracing.com. au.

The Pakenham Racing Club is riding a wave of momentum and the announcement that this year's Pakenham Cup day will offer a record $1 million in prize money further strengthens the club's standing among the premier country racing clubs in the state. Pakenham Racing Club CEO Michael Hodge spoke about how the relocation to Tynong has given the club new life and new opportunities to host marquee events. "It's an enormous achievement and something that has been a big part of the original vision from when we relocated from the old Pakenham racecourse," he said. "This type of result could never have happened at the old Pakenham racecourse and really it's come about because of our ability to secure a metropolitan Saturday Cup." All eyes will be on the Pakenham Racing Club on Saturday, 8 December as the club hosts the only metropolitan race meet in the state on that day. "When you're the main show on the Saturday, that's always been the catalyst for us to showcase the best of racing here at Pakenham and we do that via our Pakenham Cup," he said. With $300,000 in prizemoney on offer in the 2018 Pakenham Cup - up from $250,000 last year - the best horses, trainers and jockeys will head to Tynong. Along with the headline race boasting record prize-money, the VOBIS Gold Bullion also sees a major increase, jumping 25 per cent to $150,000. After a record 8000 people streamed through the gates in 2017, Hodge is expecting that number to again increase this year. "We're looking to grow that number each year, so this year we're looking to grow to 10,000 and that is on the back of a great day
