Goal mark Holted Cranbourne legend Marc Holt has been slapped with a hefty six-week ban over an incident against Berwick in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) back on 30 June.

At the tribunal hearing on Tuesday 24 July, Holt - currently sitting on 999 goals - was found guilty on two charges stemming from an incident that occurred during a half-time melee against the Wickers.

Video footage appeared to show Holt lash out at Wickers ruckman Matthew Young while being restrained by several players, before being ushered away by his team-mates towards the race.

There was no report by the umpires at the time, and Berwick opted against launching an investigation after closely examining the footage, but AFL South East launched their own investigation in the days after and deemed the incident serious enough to take action.

The independent tribunal deliberated for approximately an hour before making its final decision, with a two-game suspension for striking and a four-game suspension for kicking.

The suspension will put a cloud over when Holt can reach the magical 1000-goal milestone after falling just short in the Eagles' last game against Tooradin-Dalmore with a sublime sevengoal effort.

I have been with the organisation since 2007.

People may not know that it was originally know as Cranbourne East Neighbourhood House. This name was changed in 2009 to Balla Balla Commmunity Centre after community consultation. Balla Balla provides a number of opportunities through volunteering, education program through to Playgroup. We also have programs that feed the soul. These include yoga, tai chi and meditation. We various groups that support all members of our community.'

What is something people don't know about you?

I opened my first business when I was 24.

What is the most memorable moment in your life?

Goes without saying, the birth of my two children, Alex and Emma.

What is your favourite television show?

The Handmaids Tale.

Ms Ottens said she was grateful to the team at Macquarie University Hospital for giving "us some hope for Jack's future."

"When Jack was first diagnosed with AVM, we were told he would be unlikely to live past his tenth birthday.

"Without the Doug and Monique Thompson Fund, we would have never been able to even consider Gamma Knife surgery as a possible treatment option for Jack," she said.

Caught on cam rifling through car

By Brendan Rees When Ian and Sue Spedding left their cars unlocked in their carport, they least expected them to be broken into.

However CCTV has captured the moment a brazen thief allegedly walked down their Darling Way driveway in Narre Warren during the early hours of the morning on Thursday 19 July before the man his seen rummaging through Mr Spedding's Mitsubishi sedan.

"This guy was so damn casual," said Ms Spedding. "He's literally strolled down the drive."

She said the footage showed the man allegedly wearing gloves and trying to enter her car but was deterred when he saw a flashing red light. "He's obviously thought 'Oh that might be alarmed I'm not going there.'"

According to Ms Spedding, the camera filmed the man rifling through Mr Spedding's car where he allegedly stole a mobile phone.

"He's in Ian's car for a good two minutes."

Mr Spedding realised someone had been through his car when he found his water bottle sitting in the foot well as he was about to drive to work.

Ms Spedding was still trying to wrap her head around the incident. "Everybody said to us 'Don't you lock your car?' But it's in your carport by your house, you shouldn't have to lock it," she said.

"Locked or not it doesn't give him the right to come down and do what he's done."

Narre Warren police are investigating.

Emergency services were called to Cranbourne West early on Saturday 21 July following reports of a house fire.

Police have been told a passer-by noticed the roof of the Monahans Road home on fire about 12.45am.

No one was inside the home when emergency services arrived and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

It is yet to be determined whether the fire is suspicious and the investigation is ongoing.

7-Eleven Stores Pty Ltd has been fined almost $8,000 for causing contamination of soil with hydrocarbons (fuels and oils) that then leaked into the stormwater system at a Hampton Park site.

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) was notified of the leak by contractors working in the area. EPA Southern Metro Manager Marleen Mathias said as a result, EPA officers took samples and confirmed the stormwater system was impacted by hydrocarbons from the 7-Eleven service station in Hampton Park.

“Hydrocarbons can release harmful vapours, contaminate land and impact bird and aquatic life if they reach creeks and rivers,” she said.

Ms Mathias said the company had now removed stormwater contaminated with hydrocarbons from the stormwater drainage system and carried out testing and repair works on its underground petroleum storage system.

“Repairs were carried out to a stormwater drainage pipe where a leak of liquid hydrocarbons from surrounding soil was identified to be entering the pipe. The contaminated surrounding soil was also excavated and disposed of at a properly licensed site,” Ms Mathias said.

EPA issued 7-Eleven with an official notice requiring further assessment and works on the site, and the company is taking action to comply with the notice.

Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2008, the company has the right to have the decision to issue the infringement notice reviewed or alternatively to have the matter heard and determined by a court.

Ms Mathias said EPA expected owners and operators of service stations to take practical measures to protect people, property and the environment from potential leaks and spills of fuels and oils.

Eleven-year-old Jack Ottens - who has been battling a rare brain condition since he was born - dreams of one day working for NASA. The Berwick boy has a condition called deep-brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which affects blood vessels in his brain and can cause serious bleeding without warning.

Jack has now become one of Australia's youngest patients ever to have Gamma Knife surgery at Macquarie University Hospital on Tuesday 24 July which included one of Australia's leading neurosurgery and neurosciences programs, "While smaller AVMs can be removed surgically, larger ones and those buried deeper in the brain are now best treated by Gamma Knife," said Dr John Fuller, the Macquarie University Hospital surgeon who performed Jack's treatment, along with his team.

Jack was born with Complex Deep-Brain AVM, which was only discovered when he was five years old as he underwent an MRI scan after a serious head injury.

He initially had linear accelerator (LINAC) radiosurgery, which obliterated most, but not all, of the mass.

After enduring many health complications as a result of his AVM and treatment, doctors knew the risks were too high to repeat LINAC radiosurgery.

An AVM is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain or spine, with haemorrhage a major risk. Jack has already experienced two such haemorrhages.

After Jack's AVM diagnosis, his mother, Christine Ottens, spent years looking for the best available treatments - both in Australia and overseas.

Today, the family feels fortunate that Macquarie University Hospital offered Jack his best option in Gamma Knife surgery.

"Just last month we had to put our family home in Berwick on the market to help us manage over $500,000 of debt that we have amassed over the past seven years since Jack's AVM diagnosis," Ms Ottens said.

Students of Berwick College have begun mapping out their future after the school hosted a careers expo on Thursday 19 July.

Years 9-12 students toured the 40 exhibitors on hand from universities, TAFEs, apprenticeship groups, local employers and other private providers.

Organisations on display included Academy of Information Technology, William Angliss, Moorabbin Fying Service, Richmond Institute of Sport, Ministry of Dance, Federation University and more.

Other career options were the Australian Defence Force, Victoria Police, and the Country Fire Authority.

Careers team leader Kate Rolls said the students enjoyed finding out about potential pathways as well as looking into part-time job options while they were still at school.

"The atmosphere was electric, thanks to some very engaged students and Berwick College's resident D.J., Jakob Searles, who was kind enough to play the latest chart-toppers which all students really enjoyed," she said.

Year 12 student Kayla said the expo helped clarify her options after completing school.

"It allowed me to compare all of the different universities and I now feel confident about my university of choice," she said.

Year 12 student Hayden said: "I didn't realise how many trades the Department of Defence offer - they were really informative" Abbey, of Year 11 said: "I collected so many brochures, and I didn't realise Box Hill TAFE had so many courses on offer."

Year 9 student Jacinta said she was surprised by the amount of providers available with "awesome opportunities we have postschool."

New CEO for Casey City of Casey has unveiled Glenn Patterson as the council's new chief executive officer, five months after Mike Tyler announced he was suddenly stepping down.

Councillors unanimously voted to appoint Mr Patterson at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday evening, 24 July.

Mr Patterson brings a wealth of experience serving as CEO at Yarra Ranges Shire Council since 2008, and previously as CEO at Baw Baw Shire Council.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said council was excited by Mr Patterson's vision for guiding the organisation into the future.

"Glenn's passion, leadership and vision were clearly evident to Councillors. His extensive experience in local government and his strong commitment to community shone through," said the Mayor.

"With more than 25 years' experience lead-

ing teams through challenging environments, Glenn is well qualified to ensure the organisation is able to meet the needs of a community set to grow to half a million."

Mr Patterson said he was excited by the challenge of leading the organisation into an exciting future.

"I'm keen to build on Casey's reputation as a leader and innovator in local government and ensure the organisation is able to meet the needs of a community growing to more than half a million residents in the next 20 years," he said.

"I can't wait to get stuck in and lead the organisation into an exciting future."

Mr Patterson's appointment follows an extensive recruitment process conducted by external firm Davidson.

Cr Ablett said it was a highly credential field of candidates and he paid tribute to the interim leadership team.

Glenn Patterson has been appointed as the new CEO of the City of Casey.

"We are blessed with a hugely talented senior leadership team at Casey who have ensured a smooth transition to new leadership.

I am particularly grateful to Steve Dalton and Sheena Frost for acting as CEO." Mr Patterson will start in the position in mid-September.

CommBank gives gift of life A Berwick cancer victim's campaign to raise money for clinical cancer trials has received a much-welcomed boost, after Commonwealth Bank donated $10000 to the cause.

Effie Atkins began a Dr Hope campaign last year which raises community support to increase the number patients participating in trials of potentially life-saving cancer drugs in the south east.

Staff from Commonwealth Bank in Berwick presented Ms Atkins and her husband Tony Atkins with a $10000 cheque at Monash Hospital on Friday 20 July.

Ms Atkins said the donation was a generous gift: "With this grant we have now raised over $90000 in the past nine months."

Fire crews responded to a raptured gas leak at a residential property in Narre Warren on 18 July.

Firefighters from Hallam CFA were called to the Fiona Court address at 11.45am where an excavator had pulled up a domestic gas pipe, causing it to leak.

Senior Station Officer Stephen Keating said his crew immediately isolated all ignition sources in the vicinity of the leak by 11.55am prior to a gas company arriving who reinstated the pipe.

No one was injured and no further damaged was caused to the property.

The scene was deemed safe with police and ambulance also in attendance.

Mr Keating reminded people to check the location of gas mains prior to using heavy machinery.

"Over longer periods of time you tend to misplace where things are being put in your properties," he said.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Micky Revera.

The 40-year-old is wanted by police in relation to outstanding warrants for theft of motor vehicle and drug-related offences.

Revera is described as about 180cm tall with a solid build, olive complexion, short curly black hair, brown eyes and a scar across his nose.

He is known to frequent the Dandenong, Noble Park, Hampton Park and Oakleigh areas.

Investigators have released an image of Revera in the hope someone recognises him or has information regarding his current whereabouts.

Submission on honouring the memory of former councillor Mick Morland.

As a follow-up to our letter of 2 July, concerning our opposition to the re-naming of a substantial part of Pioneer Park in Berwick, to honour the memory of former councillor Mick Morland, we put forward the following suggestion.

We believe, that if adopted, this is an even better means of honouring the memory of a great contributor to the city that he loved and served so well, without impacting on a park that we contend should be left named Pioneer Park, without variation.

We believe that, as part of developing Bayview Park, on the former Pioneer Quarry site, the plans include an intended 1001 Steps, somewhat akin to the so called 1000 steps at Ferntree Gully.

We realise that the Bayview Park was so named around July 2016 and is an apt name recognising both the former quarry name of Bayview and the sweeping views attained from places in the park.

What better way to honour a former mayor, deputy mayor and councillor, whose energy and vision helped to mould the present City of Casey; than from a park overlooking much of his beloved City of Casey, than to name the intended 1001 Steps as the Mick Morland Steps, or if council prefer the Morland 1001 steps.

The symbolic reasoning behind this suggestion, include the wide sweeping views from the top of Bayview Park over much of the city that Mick both loved and served also in the fact that the “Mick Morland"? steps will be used by many people, with the resulting potential exposure to Mick’s story.

This suggestion is put forward as a viable alternative means of recognising Mick’s contribution to the City of Casey, Rotary and the wider community.

chosen for a purpose and that purpose is inscribed on the plaque in the grounds of Pioneers Park.

To change the name is an insult to the people of the local community, led by Bill Hudson (a councillor and mayor of the City of Berwick), who fought, with other community members, for some seven years to get the land for the people of Berwick. To give the park the name of an individual and, very condescendingly, to recognise those people for whom the park is named by naming a small area within the park, the playground no less, ‘Pioneers Playground’ is an even bigger insult.

By proposing this change of name Mayor Ablett and the City of Casey has, as the editorial said recently ‘done a shocking job at trying to honour one of its greatest contributors’. In addition to that the Casey Council has put the late Councillor Morland’s wife and family in an invidious position.

Mick Morland should be honoured by the municipality, but not at the expense of others.

To change the name of Pioneers Park is to dishonour and insult the people responsible for the very existence of the park.

Just an insult Re: Pioneers Park Name Change.

The proposed renaming of Pioneers Park is an insult to the people of the Berwick Community who contributed to a ‘fighting fund’ which convinced the City of Casey to acquire the old primary school site, and without whom the park would not exist.

I have recently re-read the text of the public notice, issued on 28 June, giving notification of its intention to change the name of the ‘locally known’ “Pioneers Park". LOCALLY KNOWN indeed!

The name has not come about from common usage. It was proposed by the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society and formally adopted by the City of Casey as the name for the park on the motion of then mayor, Neil Lucas.

By Brendan Rees A group of Narre Warren residents is calling on Casey Council to remove huge London Plane trees which they say is ruining their properties.

A petition of 52 signatures was presented to council from residents of Penhurst Street and surrounding streets at a 17 July meeting, asking for the trees to be removed and replaced with more suitable ones.

According to head petitioner Ken Binaisse, the trees were planted in about 1995 and have since damaged footpaths, kerb and channelling and private properties due to the invasive root system.

Mr Binaisse said council had been bleeding ratepayers with "forever ongoing costs" of footpath repairs over the years. "This must be running into hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars each year."

"It's not just here it's throughout the municipality," he said.

Mr Binaisse, whose own brick garden beds and concrete mow strip had begun to lift and crack, said the intrusion of roots was visible on the surface of footpaths and front yards of some houses: "Once it gets into private property that is ridiculous."

"I've got a neighbour down the road that will testify under oath that the contractor did not remove the roots under the footpath next door to him; that one's all over the shop again already, five years later."

He said if council didn't take the matter seriously "this problem is going to continue."

Mr Binaisse believes council chose to plant the trees because not only do they provide a beautiful streetscape but will also withstand severe pruning.

The trees have a potential to grow to mammoth specimens with a height of 30 metres and canopy span of 20 metres.

Mr Binaisse said the trees were also known to cause allergic reactions, claiming his 92 year-old neighbour was forced to have her evaporative cooling system cleaned due to the tree's seed due to the presence of the tree's seed.

Councillors voted for council to investigate the issue at their 17 July meeting with councillor Rosalie Crestani saying: "We've got a rigorous program that deals with problem trees but now we're dealing with legacy trees so we have to go back and fix some problems."

She said it was a balancing act of ensuring there was enough foliage in the streets as well as addressing any safety concerns residents may have.

"It's a representation of a wide sweeping issue across Casey," she added. "London Plane trees are known to cause damage in the city and in other locations."

A report will come back to council in November.

Casey Council has launched its Family Violence Prevention Strategy to ensure people feel safer in their homes, neighbourhoods and public spaces.

The Strategy was formally launched at an event held at Bunjil Place on Monday 23 July and is a four-year strategic plan that identifies family violence as a significant safety issue within the municipality, and aims to provide an inclusive, safe and connected community, where council services and facilities are driven by community needs.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the strategy provides direction for Council and public health organisations to work together with the community to create environments that support everyone to minimise family violence.

"The City of Casey is committed to creating a safe and inclusive city where women and children are safe, respected and thriving, in an environment free from family violence," he said.

"In March we held a forum for our community to provide their input into the direction of the strategy, which has also informed the action plan.

Cr Ablett said council must work to create healthy, safe and inclusive communities.

"For the past five years, the City of Casey has consistently had the highest number of reported family violence incidents among all Victorian municipalities. In the City of Casey alone, 4730 family incidents were dealt with by Victoria Police last year," Cr Ablett said.

"Council has had a longstanding commitment to promoting gender equity and preventing family violence. We have now developed this bold and innovative Family Violence Prevention Strategy and Action Plan for our city, which demonstrates our strong commitment to the prevention of family violence in the Casey community and more broadly."

Auction helps fight MND Brown Property Group and Henley have joined FightMND’s army to help tackle Motor Neurone Disease.

MND is a rare neurological condition that progressively damages the motor neurones or ‘nerves’ in the brain and spinal cord causing the associated muscles to waste away.

Former Essendon footballer Neale Daniher has spearheaded a phenomenally successful campaign to raise money for MND research.

Daniher suffers from MND and knows the devastating effect the disease can have on sufferers, their family and friends.

At present there is no known cure for MND. Brown Property Group has donated a block of land in its Meridian Estate at Clyde North.

Henley, with the help of local tradies and suppliers, is building the home.

The property will be auctioned, without a reserve, next March.

Mr Daniher visited the building site last week to thank those working on the project.

He said the entire team at Fight MND was humbled by the support and generosity of everyone involved in the project.

"It is very generous of them all. They are joining the MND army to help find a cure for MDN." Brown Property Group chief operating officer Ryan Pritchard said the company was committed to supporting the community.

Detectives have released digital composite images of three men they wish to speak to in relation to the incident. 183193

Bandits still on the loose

By Kyra Gillespie The images of three men believed to be linked to an armed robbery in Berwick earlier this year have been released by Detectives from Crime Command.

It’s believed a 25-year-old man arranged to meet with a man known only as ‘MJ’ at Sweeney Reserve in Berwick on Saturday 17 March to purchase cannabis.

About 8.45pm that night the victim was met by three men who arrived at the park in a silver VW Passat sedan.

The victim then got into the vehicle, where he was greeted by a man who identified himself as MJ. The men asked the victim if he had money for the drugs and pointed a firearm at him when he produced a quantity of cash.

The men then demanded the cash and after being given it by the victim, threw him out of the vehicle and drove away.

The victim attempted to follow them in his own vehicle, however he lost control and subsequently crashed into a house on Golf Links Drive.

Police were able to obtain details in relation to the earlier armed robbery when called to the scene.

The victim was not injured during the armed robbery or collision.

No one has been arrested in relation to the incident, however a firearm matching the description of the one used in the armed robbery was located in the Hampton Park area a few days later.

Detectives have released digital composite images of three men they wish to speak to in relation to the incident.

Two of the men are described as being perceived to be African in appearance while the third is described as being perceived to be of Middle Eastern appearance.

Investigators have also released a photo of the firearm that was located.

Casey Gymnastics Special O team is in the running to be named Carbine Club Team of the Year at the upcoming Disability Sport and Recreation (VDSR) Awards.

The team competes in the Men's Artistic Gymnastics stream and includes three male gymnasts, Chris Sizer, Curtis Damato and Miles Davis, who identify with Down Syndrome, Autism and other related intellectual disabilities.

The annual VDSR Awards recognise the achievements of people with disability, those who support them and the inclusive sport and recreation sector across the state.

Casey Gymnastics Special O team has been nominated for achieving great results including third overall at the Special Olympics Nationals 2018 Level 1 and first and second overall at the Victorian State Championships 2018 Level 1.

They have competed at State and National level across competitions hosted by Special Olympics. All three team members individually compete across six apparatus including floor, high bar, parallel bar, rings, pommel

horse and vault.

Berwick Leisure Centre Gymnastics Coordinator, Lauren Rogers said the team always showed a high work ethic in the lead up to competitions, increasing their training hours to perfect their routines.

"The boys were always encouraging one another at competition, as well as other teams competing alongside them," she said. "The boys have shown resilience through tough times and always held themselves to a high standard, beaming with enjoyment throughout the day and putting a smile on so many people's faces."

The Carbine Club Team of the Year recognises a Victorian disability sports or recreation team that, over the past 12 months, has shown a high level of commitment to their sport or recreation activities, acted as a role model to other teams and shown a high level of sportsmanship and achieved outstanding results at a state, national, international, or elite level.

The awards will be held on August 1 at Melbourne's Southbank.

AUCTION HELPS FIGHT MND BROWN Property Group and Henley have joined FightMND’s army to help tackle Motor Neurone Disease.

MND is a rare neurological condition that progressively damages the motor neurones or ‘nerves’ in the brain and spinal cord causing the associated muscles to waste away.

Former Essendon footballer Neale Daniher (pictured at the property) has spearheaded a phenomenally successful campaign to raise money for MND research. Daniher suffers from MND and knows the devastating effect the disease can have on sufferers, their family and friends.

At present there is no known cure for MND. Brown Property Group has donated a block of land in its Meridian Estate at Clyde North. Henley, with the help of local tradies and suppliers, is building the home.

The property will be auctioned, without a reserve, next March.

Mr Daniher visited the building site last week to thank those working on the project.

He said the entire team at Fight MND was humbled by the support and generosity of everyone involved in the project.

"It is very generous of them all. They are joining the MND army to help find a cure for MDN." Brown Property Group chief operating officer Ryan Pritchard said the company was committed to supporting the community.

CLUB BRINGS RESIDENTS TOGETHER WHEN Villawood launched its $5 million residents' club at Delaray in Clyde North last week the star of the show was 79-year old great grandmother Marlene Nealon.

After 15 years in Berwick, Marlene, who has six sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, moved to Delaray in January. Marlene and her beloved dog Sooty featured in a promotional video shown to guests at the club opening.

"I feel so comfortable here, it's the whole community feeling," Marlene said.

"I take Sooty for a walk every morning.

People are working in their gardens, you can stop and talk to them.

"There is nothing I like more than taking Sooty and my great-grandchildren to the park. There are kids of all nationalities and everybody is playing. It's just beautiful."

At an age when most people would be moving into a retirement village, Marlene said she wanted to live "where I had lots children around me".

"I have five or six backyards which back onto mine. I sit out and listen to the chidren playing. It's wonderful."

The residents' club was also one of the reasons Marlene was attracted to Delaray.

The architecturally designed residents' club features two swimming pools, a fully-equipped gym, function room and theatrette, library, parents' lounge, community garden, men's shed and tennis court. A cafe will open in the next few month, while a childcare centre is planned to be built on land next door.

For her part, Marlene said she was looking forward to the cafe opening, borrowing books from the library and meeting even more of her neighbours.

Matt’s fastball to success

By Russell Bennett Young Kooweerup rising star Matthew West is far from daunted by the task that awaits him and his Australian under-15 Baseball World Cup team mates on foreign soil next month.

In fact, he's spurred on by it - excited by the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage in Panama.

Matthew, who plays at both Berwick City and Dandenong, has only ever been overseas once before - also to play baseball in Japan.

This time around, the left-arm pitcher will feature for Australia from 10 to 19 August in a tournament group that also includes some genuine powerhouses of the sport such as Japan, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic in addition to the Netherlands and South Africa.

Matthew was one of only 20 players selected to play for Australia in the competition, which is sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). Along with the World Baseball Classic, it's one of two active tournaments considered by the WBSC as a major world championship.

Matthew follows in the footsteps of fellow Berwick City Cougar Jesse Hunter, who represented Australia in the same tournament back in 2014 in Mexico.

To even be invited to Sydney to trial for a place in the national squad, Matthew was scouted for roughly a year in the games and tournaments he'd competed in.

At the time, he had no clue.

They were looking for varying factors, such as his attitude and how he performs in pressure situations.

And Matthew, who plays with the Melbourne Aces' high performance academy, relished the opportunity to show what he's made of.

He was one of the initial 35 players invited

by Baseball Australia to try out in Sydney, and didn't know he'd made the final squad of 20 until after training one night.

The Year 9 student's dedication to his craft and commitment to succeed is incredibly impressive. On training nights at the Melbourne Ballpark in Altona, he first has to eat his dinner at school at St Francis Xavier before his father picks him up for what can be a two-hour drive to the other side of the city.

But it's all worth it.

Matthew's accurate left-arm pitching is what sets him apart.

"I'm the only left-handed pitcher on the team so that gives me a big advantage over other people," he said, adding that he also tries to maintain a positive attitude at all times.

"I always stay calm and don't show my emotion too much," he added.

"It's all about confidence as well - if you think you can hit your spot, you probably will."

Matthew thanked two his mentors at the Cougars, in particular, for helping him along his journey - Craig Barnett and Dan Betreen.

They've both been a constant source of support throughout his journey so far - particularly on the mental side of the game.

When it comes to his idols, Matthew spoke glowingly of fellow left-arm pitcher, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw.

Ultimately, Matthew wants to take his baseballing journey as far as he possibly can - with one particular thought front of mind: "If I could do what I love doing as a job, that'd be a dream".

With the commitment and determination he's shown so far, he's well on the way to achieving it.

Australia's first game in the under-15 World Cup is on 10 August against Japan.

For veterans, the mateship of cricket shines through

By Nick Creely Since its humbling beginnings in 2003, the now renamed Veterans Cricket Victoria has grown substantially.

Founded by John Hammer, a cricket enthusiast who wanted to get cricketers over the age of 60 involved in keeping fit and playing sport, it has become a major success story.

On Monday 16 July and Tuesday 17 July, a select group of Over 60s representatives met at a Veterans Cricket conference at Junction Oval's new state of the art facilities, discussing how to continue to grow the game of cricket for Over 50s, 60s and 70s, with three new teams to enter next season, adding to the 22 already involved.

Local cricket identity Rob Wilson - a former mayor of the City of Casey - has been a major part in growing Veterans Cricket in the region, and has been heavily involved for the best part of a decade.

Picture: SUPPLIED. He said the opportunity to travel and play some competitive cricket was a big drawing point for him to become so heavily influential in its growth.

"I helped John Hammer (the founder of Over 60s cricket) call the meeting at the Hallam Pub, in which Col Jones, myself and John Moore met, and we helped get a team started at Narre North Cricket Club," he said.

"I was still playing Masters at the time, and I got invited to play the last game of the first season, and they told me there's an overseas cricket tour to England, so I wanted a piece of that, and before you knew it, John Hammer knocked on my door and after hearing I'd been mayor of the City of Casey, offered for me to be president.

"Over in England, we played the first official test match between England and Australia, we

played at Sheffield against the Poms, and we were beaten comprehensively, I think I was second top score with 15 not out.

"But that started it off, and there's been tours ever since - I've been heavily involved doing a few things, here and there.

"So after playing a game, I was president for six years, and now we've got Greg Johnson take over the last couple of years, but I still organise the Casey team."

Rob runs a mid-week Over 60s cricket tournament at Lynbrook Oval, and loves the social aspect of Veterans Cricket.

"The camaraderie is one of the big things with Over 60s, you get to know your opponents, and you love playing competitively," he said.

"We don't play for points, so when we play against other states and against the Poms, it's very competitive."

Merger starts to take shape ahead of footy’s new era

By Nick Creely As the merger between the SEFNL and AFL Yarra Ranges starts to take shape for 2019, growing football and netball and creating opportunities for clubs to be successful is of paramount importance to region general manager Aaron Bailey.

Speaking at a recent function at the Officer Football Club, Bailey provided some key updates on how the merger is tracking.

He spoke of how the Yarra Ranges will seek to bring some new senior clubs into the growing Casey region, in order to allow more clubs to build sustainable success.

“Casey is where we want to grow football - at the moment, there’s about 20,000 people per club, so our job is to grow that region and put more clubs there to get that down to 6,000 to 10,000 mark, so it will balance football out,” Bailey said.

is growth in terms of new clubs - the lack of levels, and the lack of divisions have meant no new senior clubs have emerged, and as a result, lacks opportunity.

“I’m pleased to say Berwick Springs will start next year as an Under 19s and netball club, so already with us going to divisional football, we’ve already got a new club which is fantastic.

“We’re already working on another, which we hope will come up in the next 24 months.

“Over the next five years we want this region to represent the Yarra Ranges.”

Travel has been one of the lingering concerns for the SEFNL clubs as they move towards divisional football in 2019 but Bailey reiterated the importance of local rivalries, and said that the six clubs joining will not venture too far to play football.

“One of the things that is exciting is that we’re going to have some more local derbies, with more Cardinia teams in the competition,

which is being embraced by the clubs in the Yarra Ranges such as Gembrook and Emerald,” he said.

“For us, it’s fantastic, it gives us the opportunity to build something we think can work going forward.

"Next year we will definitely go to three divisions, but we’re still working on getting the structure of this right.

“Year one there will be three divisions, a Premier Division, a Division One and a Division Two - the Division Two will be our northern clubs and the smaller Yarra Ranges clubs.

“But the two other divisions will be the remaining Yarra Ranges clubs and the six SEFNL clubs that are coming across.

“We do have four clubs in the north that we need to find a solution for - they are Alexandra, Yea, Thornton Eildon and Kinglake. We are working through that and we’re confident we’ll have a solution by 2020.”

Bailey said that they are also working through the netball structure, but that they have some work to do to find a way to cater for the growth of the south-east region.

“We share a very similar structure in our netball - we have four divisions, and it’s very strong,” he said.

“But one of the areas we need to grow is junior netball, so we’ll work on where we need to be with that - but we have a clear plan and we’ll release that over the next few months.”

And as for the competition’s name in 2019, Bailey said they’re still working through that process, but hope to have something in concrete soon.

“In regards to our name, we’ve got a competition to find the name and we’re working through that - we can’t go with AFL Greater East, so we’ll work that and hopefully make an announcement soon,” he said. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Cavs in fight for their lives

The Cavs' State Championship men will know before their final regular season game on Sunday if they need to win to cement their place in the Big V basketball 2018 finals series.

The logjam between fifth and seventh sees all three teams - Knox, Casey and McKinnon - owning records of 12-9. Only two of these teams can make the post-season.

Knox faces the lowly Blackburn Vikings, while McKinnon takes on the fourth-placed Hawthorn Magic. Both games will be played on Saturday night.

Casey's task is the Waverley Falcons on Sunday afternoon at Waverley Basketball Centre.

The Falcons sit second on the ladder. While it is a daunting task, when these two teams met in Round 9, the Cavs came away with an impressive 96-86 win at home.

With such an even season, it's only fitting that the race for the finals comes down to the final day of the regular season.

In Round 17 action, the State Championship men fell to the Keilor Thunder on the road, 94-80.

Despite five players scoring in double figures - led by Raheem Lemons (19 points, 7 rebounds) - Casey was unable to slow down the Thunder's offence.

The Division 1 women continued on their merry way with a commanding 92-61 win over the Chelsea Gulls at home on Saturday night.

The Cavs led from start to finish and dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Gulls 47-28.

Narre Warren skipper Dylan Quirk feels great pride when he runs out in the black and white jumper with his ladder leading teammates in 2018.

Quirk understands that all eyes will be on the Magpies with just four rounds to play before the last ever SEFNL finals, and admits to being somewhat surprised by how far his side has come this season.

“It’s a good place to be around at the moment, even though we haven’t really had a home base, so we’ve been training at Sweeney so it’s been a bit of a different year,” he said.

“I couldn’t be any prouder to be honest.”

With his Magpies all but clear at the top of the table (two games clear of Berwick and percentage), Quirk said from a personnel level, he’s been blown away just how much talent is within the list.

“I look at the list, and we’ve had some stars this year on VFL lists - Mitch Cox, Cory Machaya, Aaron Wilson, Jesse Davies are genuine Agraders of the competition. We’ve had them for the majority of the year, and selfishly I hope we have them until the end,” he said.

“Our list’s been pretty impressive when we’ve had everyone available, and that obviously helps as well when you’ve got a couple of kids going well too.

“Ryan (Quirk) is having a good year, Tommy Miller’s been very good, and the young Haileybury boys in Jack Toner and Pete Gentile add the final coat to the topping, which we’ve probably not had the last few years.”

Developing youth has been high on the agenda at Kalora Park, and Quirk was full of praise for the abundance of kids getting senior experience and flourishing in the big games. “(Matt Shinners) loves playing the kids, which has been massive us - if you’ve got a 25-year-old that does something it doesn’t have the same impact as an 18-year old, and it gets you up,” he said.

“In a competition with plenty of blowouts, it can be hard week to week, and I reckon watching these boys play is really exciting, it certainly makes me excited playing with them.”

These next four weeks are crucial ahead of

finals, according to Quirk, and he pointed to the importance of being physically ready for what lies ahead.

“We’ve just come out of a six-week loading block, of a lot of running at training, so I’m tipping the next four weeks leading up to finals will be a bit lighter on the legs,” he said.

“Our program is run by Alex Sakadjian, who is the head of rehab at the Melbourne Football Club - he’s a Narre boy, played in the twos, should have played more in the ones, but with his commitment to his work, made it hard.

“He knows what he’s doing, so he runs the program from the outside - in terms of peaking at the right time of the year, we certainly have the right man to be doing that too.”

The pain of last year’s grand final loss to Berwick does still hurt and has been on the back of all the players’ minds, and Quirk said they are better placed to go one better and etch their name into history.

“Last year we were there and abouts, and we were playing really good footy, but I thought Berwick were head and shoulders above, and that it was going to take something extraordinary to beat them,” he said.

“But early wins against them this year have certainly instilled some belief - I personally still believe they’re the best side in it, but knowing now that if we play well enough, we can match them, and beat them, it gives us some confidence.

“But anyone inside the top five can win it.”

And the skipper has been forced to change his role somewhat this season, but is still having a major impact with his toughness and skill around the contest.

“It’s been to do with my body more than anything - I’ve had a back issue for probably 12 months now I guess, it’s a genetic thing,” he said.

“It’s a forward tilting pelvis, it sounds worse than it is - I’ve sort of had to learn a new running technique, so it’s been different.

“It’s been about getting that right, and trying to get back to my best footy, really.”

Quirk’s Magpies will host Beaconsfield at Kalora Park on Saturday, looking to all but lock away top spot for good.

Timing their perfect run

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 12 (SPLIT ROUND) It's all about timing in football.

And reigning premier Berwick is the perfect example of how to build a solid form base and accelerate at the right time of the year.

With just four rounds to go after a strong 12.18 (90) to 11.7 (73) win over rivals Beaconsfield, the Wickers have gone from solid form to ominous form.

"We're all about building, and trying to find the right balance, and working hard ahead of finals. The form's been good, but we need to continue to build and see where it takes us," Wickers coach Stewart Kemperman said of his side only a month out from finals.

On Saturday at Holm Park, the Wickers looked a class above from the outset against a young Eagles side still missing Nathan Langley and Scott Meyer with injury.

The Wickers piled on six first term goals to take a 26-point quarter time lead, with the ball living in the visitors' front half, giving Harry Money a couple of early goals in a dynamic opening quarter from the small forward.

Money was strong overhead and dangerous at ground level, providing the spark for the likes of Andrew Morozoff, James Magner and Tom Brennan to have an impact, giving the Eagles an instant headache in defence.

Importantly, the Wickers were using the ball smartly off their half back line, playing a direct brand of football as the home side applying some terrific pressure, and stars in Travis Tuck, Bryce Rutherford and the run of Luke Shep-

pard and Ash Smith were pivotal.

The Wickers didn't have it their own way over the next three quarters despite being in control, with superstar Madi Andrews coming immediately off the ground early with a shoulder injury after smothering the ball on the boundary line, and as Kemperman said, having players ill in the rooms at half time.

The Wickers simply shut the game away to take a 40-point three quarter time lead after blanketing the Eagles' run over the second and third terms, showcasing their best football before slowing down and managing their side through a tough game.

"We lost Madi early in the game, so we were down a rotation there," he said.

"We had to hide a couple of the guys that had some gastro, so they were pretty crook we needed to try and just get the four points.

"Credit to Beaccy, they have got a lot of bounce and spunk about them, and they continued to run hard, which makes it pretty hard to play against.

"I'm pretty happy to come away with the four points, to be honest."

Money finished with four majors in an another eye-catching display that has him just one goal away from being the competition leading goalkicker, but it was the efforts of Tuck and Rutherford that kept the Eagles from mounting any real comeback.

In a highly impressive final term that brought the margin back to a respectable 17 points, Leigh McQuillen's side showed some brilliant fight signs as they wait for star players to come back, with Taylor Joyce slotting five goals as the sole power forward, while stand in

skipper Jake Bowd, young defender Peter Alier and emerging star Riley Verbi were prominent.

Kemperman was full of praise for his two stars in the absence of Andrews, who have also hit a purple patch after a slow start to the season.

"They're (Tuck and Rutherford) building, and they continue to get better - they continue to lead really well from the front, and they really asserted themselves on the game," Kemperman said.

And Kemperman fired a warning, and said that his side is still finding their right mix despite sitting comfortably in second spot.

"We're getting close, our personnel are starting to become more available, and that's important," he said.

"There's also lot of players that go through the forward line now at the moment, and we can see the diversity week in and week out with our goal kicking. "(But) we're still missing Riley Heddles, Brody Connelly, Trent Thomas and we've got a few who are knocking on the door, which is a nice headache to have."

Meanwhile, Narre Warren's blistering forward line had a frightening 42 scoring shots against Pakenham on Saturday in a sign of things to come.

Simply, the Magpies aren't slowing down, with the ladder leaders completely dominating the improved Lions at Toomuc Reserve, 14.28 (112) to 5.7 (37).

In the end, the Magpies never really shook the Lions off until the final term, with inaccuracy plaguing them - particularly in the second and third terms, where the visitors kicked 5.17 - and

had to settle for a 33-point three quarter time lead, leaving the door ajar for Ash Green's men.

Class over shone eventually, and the Magpies - through the efforts of a young gun in Tom Miller (four goals) - managed to slam on 6.6 to no score in the final 30 minutes.

But Magpies coach Matt Shinners couldn't help but be frustrated by his side's conversion.

"Half of them were probably pretty straight forward, and you don't miss them - we played some good footy, and that's the disappointing part," he said.

While Shinners is confident that it's not a lingering issue, he said that preparation has been a concern throughout the split rounds.

"We had the bye, and Tuesday night was horrendous conditions so we actually went indoors to train, so I think looking at those things it can add to it (the inaccuracy)," he said.

"We haven't been that good on the bye they made some fundamentals errors as well, and when you're playing regular footy you probably don't make them."

Despite kicking 28 behinds, Shinners said that the side is playing some strong football, but urged them to capitalise on the scoreboard.

"My advice to the guys after the game was that it was pleasing we had the majority of the play and we had the ball more than the opposition did, but it's like anything, if opposition looks at the scoreboard and you're only kicking points, then they'll think they're in the game," he said.

"But we move on, I was happy with our passage of football, just not our conversion rate."

A big day out for Robbo

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 15 Devon Meadows picked up its second consecutive victory with a nail-biting win over Rye at RJ Rowley Reserve on Saturday, 11.7 (73) to 9.16 (70).

In the end, it was the Demons' inaccuracy that proved pivotal, but a five-goal display to Michael Theodoridis - who has now crossed the 50 goal mark - was decisive for the Panthers who are building some momentum.

The Demons held sway to lead at every change, but an unanswered two goal last quarter got the job done for the visitors.

Liam Drew, Joel Hillis and Gavin Kerr were others to impress in the win.

Pearcedale, meanwhile, also picked up a win against Crib Point, 16.10 (106) to 14.13 (97).

The Panthers were the better side all day, and the Magpies made a late charge, but ultimately were outclassed.

Luke Daniel (three goals) and Luke Dalmau starred for the home side in a confident boosting win.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 14 Russell Robertson put on one hell of a show for the Doveton Eagles. The retired AFL star proved he's still got it with 15 goals against a hapless Caulfield.

With his signature class and goal-sense, Caulfield's defence couldn't keep up as he slotted them from everywhere at Power Reserve.

The Eagles ran out 24.24 (168) to 5.5 (35)

At Keysborough Reserve, the Burras took control of the game after quarter time to claim an important 14.12 (96) to 8.3 (51) win over Skye.

Chris Bryan was dominant up forward with six majors, while Ryan Goodes and Tim Werner worked tirelessly all day.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 13 Endeavour Hills was far too strong for South Yarra, dominating from start to finish to win 19.22 (136) to 3.5 (23) on the road.

Tom Gillies and Sam McLean combined for eight goals, while Jayson Bruce and Daniel Soar were pivotal in powering the Falcons to the big win.

Hallam fell behind early against Black Rock at home and never recovered, losing 13.12 (90) to 10.6 (66).

Still winless, the Hawks battled hard but the class of Black Rock was too much to overcome.

Rory McIvor and Joel Danilo were impressive for the Hawks, while Tom Bradley booted three goals.

Heatherton fell in a heart-stopper against Ashwood at Essex Heights Reserve. Trailing all day, Heatherton dug deep in a valiant fourth quarter effort to nearly pull off the impossible.

A 23-point three quarter time deficit proved too much for Heatherton though, as Ashwood held on for a 16.12 (108) to 15.13 (103) win in dramatic fashion. Callum Cusack and Reagan Maddaford were superb for Heatherton.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 14 Meanwhile, Lyndale was never up for the fight against Frankston. The Pumas fell behind early and the Dolphins punished them to run out 8.20 (68) to 3.4 (22) winners.

Kane Denmead and Sukhwinder Singh were impressive for the Pumas.

Dandenong was ripped apart by Carrum Patterson Lakes at home. A six-goal to one opening term set the wheels in motion as Carrum Patterson Lakes ran out 21.21 (147) to 2.7 (19) winners.

Jayke Brown and Jayke Hopkins were valiant for the Redlegs.

Lyndhurst struggled to put a score on the board against Cerberus, falling 15.10 (100) to 3.6 (24) on the road. Jamie Gaspero and Jarryd McGrath were shining lights for the Lightning.

Sandown was unable to keep up with Moorabbin in the second half as the Kangaroos claimed a 12.15 (87) to 8.13 (61) win.

Nicholas Morrish and Brendan Robinson were best for Sandown.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 14 St Johns claimed their third win of the season in dramatic fashion at Eltham College. Eltham Collegians AFC jumped out to an early lead and held a 26-point advantage at the main break.

Trailing by 11 points with a quarter to play, St Johns rallied and booted four goals to two to claim a five-point win. Inaccuracy in front of goal almost cost St Johns, but they did enough to get over the line, 10.20 (80) to 11.9 (75).

Glenn Costas (four goals) and Rohan Scott were dynamic for St Johns in the thrilling win.

A perfect 10 for Casey as barnstorming run continues

By Hayley Wildes There are wins within a season that are worth far more than the four competition points gained from them. The Casey Demons pulled off one of those wins in the VFL against the Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In a game that Geelong seemed destined to run away with, Casey dug deep and pulled off one of the comebacks of the season to claim its 10th straight win.

In a low-scoring affair, the Cats kicked five of six goals scored in the first half to hold a 25-point lead at the main break.

Impressive first halves from Jay Lockhart and James Munro were keeping Casey in the contest, but a second half lift was needed from the majority of the team.

There was a noticeable improvement in intensity early in the third quarter but the Demons were unable to break through for their second goal of the game as Tom Bugg hit the post and Dean Kent’s attempt was touched on the line.

Things weren’t going Casey’s way, but the fight was there. Finally, 14 minutes into the third term, Sam Weideman took a strong contested mark in the goal square and slotted the Demons’ second major of the day.

Just minutes later, Corey Wagner kicked truly to cut the deficit to just 16 points. A late goal to the Cats saw them take a 22-point advantage into the fourth quarter.

Although the Demons were unable to make significant inroads on the scoreboard, they had returned to playing Casey football with Cam Pedersen, Cory Stockdale and Declan

Keilty all getting heavily involved.

The fourth quarter was one for the ages.

Three goals in four minutes early in the final term saw Casey trailing by just three points. Majors to Lockhart, Weideman and Cory Machaya had the team buzzing and full of belief.

Geelong’s Ryan Abbott responded just minutes later to give his side some breathing room, but Casey wasn’t done.

Patrick McKenna returned the favour and the game was on a knife’s edge. In a frantic 15 minutes of play, neither team was able to get the goal they were so desperately searching for.

That was until Mitch Gent stood tall. Gent kicked the match-winner after a tough contested mark with just one minute of play remaining to give Casey a dramatic and hard-

fought three-point win, 8.9 (57) to 8.6 (54).

The Demons’ ferocious attack on the football was evident by some incredible tackle numbers. Aaron vandenBerg (17 tackles), Tom Bugg (15) and Dean Kent (14) were just sublime in the clinches.

Cam Pedersen’s terrific season continued with another dominant performance, while Cory Stockdale and James Munro helped will their team over the line.

Casey’s 10-game winning streak is made all the more impressive given the strength of the opponents they’ve defeated - six wins have come against current top-eight sides.

Casey (12-2) sits second on the ladder, two wins clear of Geelong in third. With a bye in Round 17, Casey returns to action against the Northern Blues on 4 August at Casey Fields.

Super seven for Stingrays

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays took on the bottomplaced Bendigo Pioneers at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon and their dominant TAC Cup season continued, claiming their seventh win on the trot.

The signs were ominous early as Dandenong piled on nine scoring shots to one in the opening term. If not for their wayward kicking in front of goal, the Stingrays’ 23-point quarter-time lead could’ve been much larger.

From the outset, the likes of captain Campbell Hustwaite, Sam Fletcher and Will Hammill were dominating their opponents through the middle of the ground.

Bailey Williams was looking dangerous around the ground - both when drifting forward and handling ruck duties - and his aerial work was a class above.

The second quarter was more of the same as Dandenong extended its lead to 8.10 (58) to 1.1 (7) at half time.

A whopping 18 scoring shots to two tells the story of just how dominant the Rays were and, with a great set up behind the ball, Bendigo simply couldn’t find a way through Dandenong’s wall.

Jake Frawley’s work up forward was sublime, as was Bailey Williams’, who showcased his scarily-good agility with a snap goal after roving the pack in the goal square. All that was berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

stopping Williams from completely dominating the game was his goal kicking.

Jamie Plumridge added to Bendigo’s pain with his first major of the day just 50 seconds into the third quarter.

To the Pioneers’ credit, they responded with two classy goals in two minutes to put some respectability on the scoreboard.

In an even quarter, both teams booted four majors.

In the fourth quarter, Dandenong continued to dominate play, but more wayward kicking from the Rays saved the Pioneers from what should’ve an even larger loss than the final margin of 66 points.

The highlight of the quarter, and maybe even the game, was Campbell Hustwaite’s incredible running goal from the boundary. Having roved the pack beautifully, he burned his opponents and slotted a beauty from 45 metres out on the boundary.

It was the cherry on top of a fine performance from the skipper, whose tireless work around the contest powered many forays forward.

Zac Foot’s tremendous game was highlighted by a screamer late in the final quarter and he finished with three majors, while Jake Frawley booted four.

Sam Fletcher, Will Hammill and Jai Taylor were also impressive.

The Rays’ cleaner ball use and the way in which they hunt the footy was just too much for the Pioneers as they ran out 15.21 (111) to 7.3 (45) winners. It was a clinical performance - minus the goal kicking - from the top of the table Rays.

This week Dandenong will take on the Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena on Sunday (29 July).

The best of a good bunch

By Derek Ogden The Mazda3 marches on as one of the most popular cars on the Australian market with upgrades to its lower end models for modest increases in price. A range of equipment has been added to Neo, Maxx and Touring grades across hatch and sedan variants.

Buyers of the top-notch SP25 and SP25 GT are the big winners with driveaway matching the manufacturer’s figure before on-road costs.

The Mazda3 SP25 continues to feature advanced keyless entry, dual-zone climate-control, electric parking brake, headlamps auto on / off and 18-inch alloy wheels, while the range-topping SP25 GT adds colour active driving display, LED daytime running lights, driver attention alert, adaptive LED headlamps, heated power mirrors, plus traffic sign recognition.

It was the SP25 GT six-speed automatic, selling for $31,990 driveaway, that was on test.

Coming to Australia at the beginning of 2014, the Mazda3 carries through the company’s Kodo - Soul of Motion design theme. The cabin is positioned toward the rear of the body, creating a sleek side view, rising toward the rear.
