By Derek Schlennstedt Boundless energy, tireless commitment and a great passion for art, these are the traits that have seen Shirley Dougan, Ferntree Gully Arts Society president, recognised in this year’s Ferntree Gully/Rowville Electorate Victoria Day Awards.

The awards recognise, celebrate and thank the community volunteers whose exemplary service makes such a difference in the local community, and Shirley’s involvement in the arts society has done just that.

The society nominated Shirley as a worthy recipient of the honour because of her ongoing hard work and dedication to the organisation and the local arts community.

FTG Arts Society committee member, Sharon Harrison said that in the three years Ms Dougan has been presiden she has led the society with great ‘heart, commitment and boundless energy’.

“She gives of herself tirelessly, always making herself available for the society’s work: promoting its programs, sourcing funds, attending extra meetings and creating new avenues for local art experiences,” Ms Harrison said.

“Shirley’s outstanding efforts have drawn many young artists into the gallery, opening their eyes to the joys of being creative.”

As well as the extensive time she dedicates to promoting society programs, sourcing funds and finding new opportunities to experience art, Shirley is particularly admired for her passion for introducing young people to the joys of creating.

She was instrumental in establishing the now very popular weekly Kids After School Arts Program and the School Holiday Classes at The Hut Gallery, where children are encouraged to develop their artistic skills, grow their confidence, and share in a different learning environment.

“Her understanding of the value of learning, particularly in young people, has helped young people develop new skills, to grow in confidence and opened the doors to their participation in the local arts community,” Ms Harrison said.

“We’re very grateful for Shirley’s extraordinary commitment.”

Ms Dougan joined other recipients at the Awards Ceremony on 29 June, hosted by MP Nick Wakeling and Kim Wells at the Syrena Polish House in Rowville, where she received her citation and medal.

The editor’s desk A Woori Yallock local heard sirens on Tuesday 17 July and gave us a call.

They suspected a car crash - there were lots of sirens - but wondered if we knew exactly what was happening.

Within a few minute we'd spoken with CFA and Ambulance Victoria and used our Facebook page to advise people to avoid the Warburton Highway scene.

We went to the scene, knowing that someone had been trapped in one of the vehicles involved but not knowing what we'd witness.

We took photographs, mindful not to identify the cars involved or capture any injured parties at their most vulnerable.

Later that day and over the course of the following day, once the dust had settled, we spoke again with emergency services to paint a fuller picture of what happened.

We walk a constant tightrope as we try to keep the community informed while protecting people's privacy.

If we say too much, our readers are understandably concerned about invading private moments.

If we say too little, the community calls out for more details or speculates, sometimes spreading misinformation.

In this case we were lucky, too, that an alert community member thought to seek information from a reliable source their local newspaper.

Social media has made it possible for individuals and groups to communicate directly but that information is unchecked.

So reach out to us. We want to start and participate in conversations for the community's benefit.

Poppy tribute grows

He took the concept from a 5000-poppy craft project in London three years ago.

Sharon Davies has already made 75 and hopes to contribute 100 in total.

"I love making poppies and doing crochet," she said.

Mr Maloney and team have reached out to local schools, organisations and groups, and have received poppies from across the state.

"Anyone who wants to can donate poppies, even if it's only a couple - we don't mind," he said.

"Getting involved by making the Remembrance Day poppies is a wonderful way for children to learn about the sacrifices made by so many and for all in our community to take part in honouring their memory."

The Emerald Men's Shed is making large timber poppies to hang around the town from 1 November, to rally the community ahead of the big day.

The Emerald post office and RSL are accepting poppy donations.

Kallista CFA will hold a multi-brigade training exercise to be conducted on Wednesday night, 25 July from 7.30pm in the Kallista Village.

The location is at Kallista-Monbulk Road and Kallista-Emerald Rd. The objective is to bring a “first time event” together incorporating the Kallista traders, the Kallista-Patch Fire Brigade, and the Monbulk and Sassafras fire brigades.

This first time event for the Kallista Traders and Community is called the “Kallista Village Major Asset Protection” plan.

The plan will involve more than 30 CFA volunteers who will visit businesses and map-out the shops layout.

Illegal hunting Police are seeking information regarding alleged illegal spotlighting and hunting in and around the Bunyip State park.

Police members said that people are illegally hunting in the Bunyip State Park sometimes trespassing on private property just to locate animals.

On Saturday 21 July at 6.25pm, Lilydale divisional van members responded to reports from concerned members of the public and attended the intersection of Maroondah Hwy and Victoria Rd, Lilydale.

A 52-year-old male driver subsequently accompanied police members to a police station where he returned an evidentiary breath test reading of 0.188.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1,017.

He will be charged on summons in relation to drink-driving. When his licence is restored, he will have to have an alcohol interlock.

A Lilydale affordable housing project received a $200,000 boost.

On Wednesday 18 July, the Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley announced the Social Housing Investment Planning (SHIP) grant.

The State Government cash will help Yarra Ranges Council to further plan a development pegged for 67-69 Anderson Street.

Neal Taylor from charity Holy Fools said the news was fantastic and the need for affordable housing was "huge".

He said about 400 people were homeless in the area.

"There are others stuck in transition housing or living in bad conditions because there's nowhere for them to go," he said.

"We need affordable housing desperately, not only for the homeless we've got but a number of other people living on the razor's edge of homelessness."

The council's social and economic development director, Ali Wastie, said the land was surplus to the council's needs and near transport, the town's activity centre, education and job opportunities.

Kallista asset protection plan

Solemn tribute to our fallen footballers The Monbulk Rangers women's teams stood shoulder to shoulder with Skye United FC to honour Laa Chol before their Sunday clash.

The Skye player, 19, was killed during a dispute at a party in a Melbourne apartment on Saturday 21 July.

The minute's silence before the match also honoured Monbulk coach, Anna Hopkins, who lost a battle with cancer four years ago.

Anna's daughter Ruby led the senior women's team onto the pitch for the Women's State League Round 13 match.

Skye claimed a 1-0 win in the seniors while Monbulk took the honours in the reserves, 3-1.

Monbulk president Sam Knight paid tribute to Anna Hopkins as a hardworking, committed and valued member of the club and acknowledged the anguish of the Skye team losing Ms Chol.

A sea of 10,000 red poppies will cover Emerald and Puffing Billy this Remembrance Day. The Emerald RSL is encouraging people to knit, felt or crochet as many of the symbolic flowers as they can to mark 100 years since World War I came to an end.

The poppy became as a symbol of remembrance after Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae penned poem In Flanders Fields about the flowers growing on battle-scared fields in Ypres.

"At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 2018 at Anzac Place, we can stand proudly as a community as Puffing Billy, covered in the poppies we have made, steams into Emerald," project organiser Peter Maloney said.

As then-Emerald RSL president, he played a key role in creating the town's Anzac Walk, launched in 2015 to honour the 32 men from Emerald who did not return from the WWI battlefields.

Then Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove arrived aboard Puffing Billy to officially open the tribute.

"This is the end of a journey in terms of the Centenary of Anzac," Mr Maloney said.

"Three years later, here we are again doing the 100th anniversary of armistice.

"It's like bookends."

This year's event will again pay tribute to the 32 men lost to the Great War, but will also highlight the 65 who served and returned.

"Our very own Puffing Billy was the train that took many of those men on the first part of their journey to the war all those years ago," Mr Maloney said.

"As part of our Remembrance Day ceremony, Puffing Billy will carry their poppy-framed photos and honour roles back home to Anzac Place."

Backs can spell trouble Will my disc ever heal?

If you've ever had, or currently have, a disc injury to your lower back, you will understand why physiotherapists are often asked this question.

There are two main mechanisms by which discs can create pain: annular injury and protrusion/extrusion.

Annular injuries are typically degenerative in nature, though can also be the result of trauma. Prior to the 1950s the tiny nerves that supply the outer fibres of the disc (annulus) had never been seen, thus the disc itself was thought to be insensitive to pain.

We now know that the disc can be a source of pain, that this pain is poorly localised due to an overlap of the three spinal nerves above and below, and that the deep, visceral pain it causes makes the disc unique in human musculoskeletal tissue.

And there is a common misconception that if material from a disc is pressing against nerve tissue then it never heals. Fake news.

The natural process of the human body to clean up the extruded material from the disc

is called resorption and the pace at which this occurs can vary between individuals.

Resorption rate is affected by genetics, systemic health, smoking and the continuance of aggravating postures or activities.

The most hopeful part about this information is that surgery to remove the disc material is no longer indicated as an early treatment measure in most cases, as we know that the material will resorb over time.

Surgery should be urgently considered for a disc extrusion or protrusion if there is a change in bowel or bladder function (incontinence or retention) or numbness in the saddle area.

Otherwise, surgery is indicated only if progressive weakness of leg muscles is occurring and numbness is evident in the skin of the leg; and/or the pain is not manageable with conservative care.

Conservative care for any disc injury includes physiotherapy, low weight-bearing ex-

ercise, avoidance of aggravating activities and postures (typically sitting, repetitive bending and incorrect lifting) and pain-relieving medication or injections into the affected area if required in the short-term.

Examples of low weight-bearing exercise are hydrotherapy and equipment clinical pilates with a physiotherapist performed across gravity.

Discs can heal if the right conditions for this are created.

Member for Monbulk and Education Ministion James Merlino announced that if re-elected Labor will invest $7.1 million to build a brand-new library, a new grade 5 and 6 building and two new competition grade outdoor netball courts at Monbulk Primary School.

Liberal candidate for Monbulk John Schurink, shadow police minister, Ed O'Donohue, and liberal opposition leader Matthew Guy met with constituents outside to Monbulk Police Station to announce a $5.1 million plan to rebuild the station.

Millions set for Monbulk

By Derek Schlennstedt Monbulk MP James Merlino and Liberal candidate for Monbulk John Schurink both pledged more than $5 million for projects in the township of Monbulk.

On Friday 20 July, Mr Merlino met with Monbulk Primary School students, parents and teachers and announce that if re-elected in November, a Labor government would invest $7.1 million to build a new library, Grade 5 and 6 building, and two competition-grade outdoor netball courts.

The same day, Mr Schurink, Liberal Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Shadow Police Minister, Ed O’Donohue announced that a Liberal government would invest $5.1 million to rebuild the Monbulk Police Station.

Speaking at the Monbulk Primary assembly, Mr Merlino asked students about the condition of the existing Grade 5 and 6 building and was met with a unanimous response that it was “old and smelt“.

“As both the Minister for Education and the local member, I know how much Monbulk Primary matters to local families,“ he said.

“These investments will make sure local kids are getting the very best start in life.“ He said students would use the netball courts during school times and clubs could use them outside school hours.

Principal Lyn Ordish spoke to the ‘Mail’ shortly after the announcement and said the school didn’t have a library and that the Grade 5 and 6 portables could no longer cater to increasing student numbers.

Outside the Monbulk Police Station, Mr Schurink said it was “vital that the Monbulk com-

munity has the resources it needs to fight crime and protect our communities when we need help the most and this new facility will provide that”.

“The current facilities in Monbulk are no longer acceptable for a station that not only provides police response here, but also over a large area across the Dandenong Ranges,” he said.

“These new facilities will improve the safety for all of our police men and women so they can continue to keep not only Monbulk, but all Victorians safe.”

LETTERS Courts closed to the community I am a former player, umpire, coach and committee member of Belgrave South Netball Club, and was most upset to see the courts completely fenced and inaccessible to the public.

Last week we took our grandchildren up to play a game on the courts only to find that there was no way to enter the courts.

When did the courts become the property of a selected few, locking out the residents and ratepayers of Belgrave South?'

Bag ban money grab Are the new plastic shopping bags now biodegradable?

When supermarkets introduced single use plastic bags, many people even believed they were biodegradable, which they were not.

To do something good for the environment, new shopping bags should be replaced with something better, but customers should not have to pay for them twice.

Woolworths/Coles wouldn't be so quick with this ban if there were not huge profits in it for them.

Shopping bags, paper or plastic, have always been included in the price of products already.

So now they save over $170 million by banning the current plastic bags, then they make another $72 million on the new 'mostly plastic' shopping bags, while customers have to pay extra for them.

Producers/sellers must become more responsible, as people can only buy what is available.

Customer service is also wanting.

Have they forgotten that without customers they have no business?

Where is the benefit, when prices constantly go up for cheap imported products and customers having to do the scanning, unpacking, repacking with not enough manned check-

outs and the aisles are often blocked with trolleys by staff filling shelves, which was previously done at night?

Maybe it is time to go back to the markets and the butcher, baker, greengrocer etc.

Most plastics come from Asia, mostly China, including plastic bags but now they don't want to even buy their plastic rubbish back.

Isn't it time to cut back on all unnecessary plastic imports?

It's hard to believe that at the last Tennis Open, many thousands of plastic bottles of water were imported from China.

Who was responsible for that?

Don't we have enough clean water here?

While pollution from cigarette butts is greater than from plastic bags, NO supermarket or government is complaining or doing something about it, because there is no profit in it for them, stopping the sale of cigarettes.

Hygiene could become a problem in summer and it remains to be seen if it is worth it, when people become ill from salmonella or ecoli by using dirty reusable bags.

Who are they going to blame?

Governments should use the money they save from what they were paying China for the waste and use it for recycling here.

There is not a reason to hike up rates again.

ICU delay an election ploy Quick access to an intensive care unit can, for some, be the difference between life and death.

During my 27 years as a paramedic I saw first-hand many lives saved as a result of early treatment at an ICU. Sadly, I also cared for those who, because of geography and time, were unfortunately unable to receive such intensive treatment.

For the wonderful communities of the Dandenong Ranges, access to an ICU is remote - Box Hill for some, Casey or Dandenong for others - and with ever-more traffic congestion, these locations are getting further away from us in the time taken to access.

For that reason I can’t accept the decision of James Merlino and the Andrews Government to not open the Angliss Hospital Intensive Care Unit and Short Stay Unit until October, just before the election.

Work on the project was completed months ago and it should be open now.

The Andrews Government has had over two years to plan for its opening and for James Merlino to cite staff training as the reason for the delay is grossly inadequate and not good enough.

Winter is a very busy time for hospitals and a period of risk for many sick and elderly Victorians.

The Andrews Government must commit to opening the Angliss Hospital ICU and Short Stay Unit immediately.

To do otherwise continues to put the communities of the Monbulk electorate at risk.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something people don't know about you?

I was a published writer and photographer and had many changes in my working life before ending up working in a charitable capacity with our rescue.

What has been your most memorable moment?

Returning to study as a mature age; it was challenging but lead to achieving a Masters Degree and a PhD which seemed unreachable. When the thesis was passed and the goal achieved it was a personal and memorable milestone.

What would your final meal be?

My final meal would probably be a picnic with fresh and natural produce, and a cool refreshing dessert.

What event, past or present or future would you like to witness?

I would like to witness progress in animal law to include the pet rabbit. This would include restricting the sale of pets in pet shops, which in turn would stem the flow of breeding in backyards and dumping of unwanted pets. I would like to see the pet rabbit categorised as a restricted pet. This action would enforce the education of businesses to understand the nature, care and welfare of the animals they are selling, so that this is passed onto the buyer. As rabbits are also considered feral pests, I cannot understand why this has not happened already.

What is your favourite book?

I seem to enjoy reading books associated with the topics I am interested in at the time. For example during my research, I delved into the relationship people had with the natural world throughout history and enjoyed all the relevant authors.

who have since passed. Aileen was a researcher of our family history. I would also invite four of my ancestors, which would include Grace O'Malley, from our Irish heritage, who was also known as the Pirate Queen.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on our 2018 fundraising trivia night themed Rabbit Runaway Orphanage "In a Winter Wonderland". This fundraiser is crucial to raising funds for the vet care of our health challenged rabbits. I am also preparing our 2019 calendar, which will celebrate our 10 years as a charity.

What is it that attracted you to rabbits?

I was never attracted to rabbits, I had not had them as pets, I had not even considered them as a pet. We did not have pets and knew nothing about rabbits. One day, two stray rabbits wandered into our property. We did not set out to rescue or re-home this unique pet. They literally wandered into our lives. After the fourth one arrived on our property, we took some of these animals to another rescue where they were killed. This was not acceptable to me and I found this so distressing that my husband and I set out to do something about it. Our lives were lead on a different path from that day forward.

The Orphanage evolved from this encounter and forged its own path, taking us with it.

THREE ‌ things to keep in mind when burning off

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) warned that household or farm waste such as silage wrap, chemical containers or old tyres wouldn't burn properly and would produce large amounts of smoke. These items should instead be sent to a properlymanaged landfill or recycler.

Fallen trees or other natural wood being burnt should be as dry as possible and not freshly cut, to keep down the volume of smoke. Timber that has been used in a building, furniture or other manufactured product must not be burnt.

The EPA said anyone burning off should pay attention to the weather, making sure they minimise the impact of smoke on neighbouring properties and have sufficient water ready to extinguish the fire if conditions change or the smoke gets out of hand.

Holiday boot camp

By Derek Schlennstedt When Jett Farrar's parents broke the 'exciting news' that he would be spending the school holidays on the Gold Coast, the 17-year-old from Belgrave South imagined a fun-filled vacation of sight-seeing and relaxing on the sunny beaches.

What Jett did not anticipate was that he would be actually taking part in a 9-day military-style boot camp to help him build resilience, discipline and leadership skills, all while staying in a remote corner of the Gold Coast hinterland.

The intensive program involves teens and tweens getting back to nature and learning how to communicate without any technology, all while pushing their personal limits.

It is the brainchild of Veteran Mentors, a group of ex-servicemen and women who wanted to use their combat experience and military training to help children who are facing a range of issues such as technology addiction, bullying and low self-esteem.

According to Jett, prior to going to the camp he had been addicted to technology and had no drive to complete schoolwork.

"My parents didn't think I'd be able to handle coming here - not having access to technology," said Jett.

"I always used the excuse that I had nothing else to do, which left me with no drive to do anything."

After just five days with the Veteran Mentors team, he said he felt 'a lot better' than when he first arrived.

"At first I was nervous and scared, but I feel a lot better now. I have a good team working with me," said Jett.

"Each morning we complete physical training sessions and I really enjoy feeling good about myself afterwards - especially knowing that my team helped me through it."

Belgrave 17-year-old Jett Farrar with his section leader Corey Neil at the Veteran Mentors boot camp designed to assist children to become accountable for both their behaviour and decisions.

Jett said when he returned home, he would be focused on harnessing everything he learned to find better things to do with his time.

"I've learnt some pretty cool skills, and I'm excited to share those with my family," said Jett.

Former Australian Army Combat Engineer and now Director of Veteran Mentors Troy Methorst said he and the other military veterans were all about helping kids, just like Jett, become accountable for their behaviour and decisions.

"A group of us put our heads together and realised that we had knowledge and experience that could really help the younger generation," said Mr Methorst, who served in Afghanistan and East Timor.

"Our programs are ideal for 12 to 17-yearold children demonstrating poor behaviours, low selfesteem, lack of respect, addiction to technology, issues with drugs and alcohol, or simply to propel them to reach their fullest potential.

"It can also help those who are anxious and struggling to find their place in this busy world. Some of the children who come on the program are facing difficulties at home - often with separated, divorced or seriously ill parents."

The Veteran Mentors also do motivational speaking and smaller team building sessions at schools, as well as parent workshops. The next program is set to run from 29 September to 7 October.

Digital CFA

By Derek Schlennstedt CFA District 13 is one of the outer metropolitan districts that Is included in the transition from using analogue channels to using digital dispatch channels when communicating with VicFire.

As part of the Victorian State Government's Digital Radio Upgrade Program (DRUP), CFA's outer metropolitan Districts (7, 8, 13 and 14) whill all transition to digital by March 2019.

District 13 is predicted to be able to use the digital dispatch channels by February 2019.

The Program, facilitated by Emergency Management Victoria, will bring CFA's outer metropolitan districts up to the same quality of dispatch communications enjoyed by CFA regional districts, Victoria Police, MFB, and Ambulance Victoria in metropolitan Melbourne.

It is seen as an important step to further enhance rural brigades' capacity to carry out their duties.

The upgrades will see an additional 33 towers built across the four Districts as well as the introduction of 25 VicFire-allocated fire ground channels.

These new channels will use the new tower network to improve communications, providing better audio quality dispatch communications between CFA and VicFire.

CFA's DRUP Project Director Shane Peacock said that when implemented, brigades will be advised of their allocated fire ground channel on their pager and by VicFire when turning out.

"The State Government has invested heavily in the enhancement of the RMR digital network which will see improved communications capabilities across CFA's Outer Metropolitan Districts," Mr Peacock said.

To allow time for members to get used to the transition to digital, both the digital and analogue dispatch channels will be patched together at VicFire for a period of time after transition.

Australia throws away an estimated 30 million toothbrushes every year and the 1000 tonnes of rubbish generated by those brushes are now being targeted by schools around Victoria - specifically Menzies Creek Primary School.

As part of a nationwide initiative, the school has taken up the challenge to reduce the amount of oral care products that go into landfill.

Since June, students at Menzies Creek Primary have been busy collecting oral care waste items to recycle for the Colgate Community Garden Challenge.

Tania McGregor, Garden specialist at Menzies Creek Primary said the products collected by the school are sorted into 2kg packages.The packages are then sent to TerraCycle, which creates new products from the waste.So far, the school has accumulated almost two of the 2kg packages.

"Its oral care products, toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, packaging and floss containers - all those items that are normally thrown in to the bin," said Ms McGregor.

Ms McGregor invited locals to drop-off any oral care products they might have.

"We've just got a box in the office and junior building and got a poster on the front, so anyone can just drop their stuff in the box."

Our story on cockatoos tearing Healesville and

Have you seen the peculiar cube-like object made out of colourful tent material which made its home on the side of Maroondah Highway, before the Healesville ARB store?

For months it could be seen stuck in a tree opposite Airlee Road, until it fell down only a few days ago.

Well, now it seems it has finally been picked up and alas is no longer there to greet those who drive into Healesville.

Healesville last week lost Maurie Gray and Rev Dipaloko, two men who loved their community and who earned the admiration and respect of many in it.

Maurie was a true gentleman and Healesville’s favourite butcher for more than 30 years.

A charter member of the Lions Club of Healesville, he had been a member for 57 years.

Maurie passed away, age 87, after a long illness on Saturday 14 July with his family by his side.

A service was held on Monday 23 July.

Rev came to Healesville more than 15 years ago as a political refugee from Burma and made it his home.

He embraced any opportunity to play a role in the democracy he valued as an Australian, regularly attended ceremonies such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, rallies and other events that needed a voice for a cause he believed in.

Rev passed away, aged 76, on 18 July. Details of a memorial service will be announced once finalised.

The Mail will pay tribute to Maurie and Rev in the coming weeks.

The 1st Cockatoo Scout group accepts a donation of $2000 from Ranges First National.

Belly dance at Burrinja The Far East Belly Dance Collective was thrilled to present a three hour belly dance show at Sooki Lounge on July 8.

Over 100 people braved the cold and rain to support over 40 local performers, showcasing all different styles of Middle Eastern folk dancing.

The 22 performances included local group Tribal Moon Belly Dance, who delighted the audience with festive American Tribal Style (ATS).

Another group, Bellique Belly Dance presented a fast-paced drum solo.

Founder of the Far East Belly Dance Collective, Prue Welsh set up the belly dance group following a move from Nunawading She said that the performances at Sooki lounge were met with great enthusiasm and that the hills was a great outlet of creatively minded people.

"It went really, really well, I could not have asked for it go get better ... we had 22 acts so it was a huge jam-packed show," She said "I moved to Belgrave and found that the hills brought back my desire to be creative again."

"The hills really got my passion going again; it's such a creative community."

The show included dancers from all over Melbourne and as far away as Airport West and was also in-part to raise money for the Far East Belly Dance Festival which will be held at Burrinja in September.

The Inaugural Festival will feature a line-up of workshops, live music, African drumming an open stage, markets and a professional show "The Far East Nights".

The Far East Belly Dance Collective thrilled patrons at Sooki Lounge and were raising money for a Belly Dance Festival, which which will be held in Upwey in September.

"Amanda Pooley-Brand and I are organising a two day festival in September to be held at Burrinja," Ms Welsh said.

"It'll be something for everyone, not just dancers."

Talking about her passion, Ms Welsh that belly dancing is not only a form of creative expression but a way to keep fit and meet new people.

"There's a lot of great aspects to it," she said.

"The social aspect is fantastic as it's a real community among women and unlike other types of dance it can be done by any shape, age, and size or fitness level."

Sewing bee solution to less than fantastic plastic bags

By Derek Schlennstedt Plastic Bag Free Dandenong Ranges are gearing up for their third annual sewathon to rid the Dandenong Ranges of plastic bags once and for all.

Since there first sewathon in October 2016, the group have created over 1000 boomerang bags which have been dispersed into local supermarkets.

Of course, they can't make all the bags alone and are calling on passionate environmentally-minded residents to help in their efforts to create a plastic bag free region.

Sewathon organiser, Vicki Boyle said that although supermarkets have stopped the use of plastic bags, there was still work to be done.

"The event will be lots of people bringing their sewing machines and they will be making lots of boomerang bags to supply local businesses, and vegie pouches so people can get rid of those flimsy bags you use for vegies at the supermarket," she said.

"It's all very well to ban single-use plastic bags but that's just the tip of the iceberg."

"The bags the supermarket are offering are still made of plastic it's just that you can re-use them for a lot longer."

Ms Boyle said anyone was welcome to attend the sewathon and that there were activities for everyone, even those with no sewing experience.

"People can do the cutting out for the bags, and the little veggie pouches need to be threaded with a little wooden bead."

Fight on for the final five

By Cameron Hutchison The AFL Yarra Ranges competition has now split, with Division 1 playing Round 12 and Division 2 playing Round 13.

Division 1 had no upset winners and the ladder has spread out slightly, but the fight is on in earnest for positions three to five, with four clubs sharing third spot.

Division 2 probably has its top three but the final order is still anyone's guess.

Four clubs are left fighting for the last two spots, so the last five rounds are going to be important.

Division 1 Seniors Football Monbulk 15.15.105 d Emerald 12.11.83 Monbulk is in seventh spot and still an outside chance to make it into the five after a big come-from-behind win.

Emerald got the early lead by 10 points at quarter time.

They piled on five goals to two in the second and went into them main beak leading by 27 points. Emerald came out flat in the third and could only add three behinds to their score but allowed Monbulk to kick 5.5 to have the lead by five points at the last change.

Emerald picked up the pace in the last, but it was all too late.

Hawks leave their nest due to works Monbulk Junior Footy gave a big thank-you to Upwey Football Club for hosting what should have been its home game on the weekend.

The Hawks were unable to play at home due to demolition works ahead of construction of a new sports pavilion.

Under-9 The boys played a ripper of a game on a full ground. The opposition was tough but the Hawks held their positions well and matched their opponents score for score (not that they were counting).

Best: Arley, Ben, Jimmy, Lachie and Will.

Under-10 The side put up a good contest against a skilful Upwey team.

The Hawks were slow out of the blocks again, but their second half was terrific.

Players stayed on their opponents, cleared the ball from the centre and created some scoring chances.

The boys got to the ball first, giving momentum going forward.

The side was slightly outplayed in the first half, but the boys lifted their game and won the second.

The kids stuck to the team structures well which will make them a very good team next year.

Belgrave was fighting hard at every contest for four quarters and Monbulk really only started to settle into the game after half time.

There's plenty to work on and hopefully the side can get back into training with purpose and realise that consistent training with purpose results in better game performance.

Brookers in their blood

By Russell Bennett Never has a club-first mentality or the spirit of mateship been more on display than it was at Gembrook recently.

Three favourite sons of the Gembrook Cockatoo Football Club each marked significant milestones in their footy journeys as they took their place in the Brookers' veterans' side that ran out to face the Marysville Villains.

But there was a catch - none of them were actually marking a milestone on the day.

Dean 'Hawk' Allcott is a dual senior premiership player and Con Licciardi medallist at the club, and also won the league's Division 1 reserves best and fairest in 2006, and club best and fairests in 2006 and 2017.

Sunday, 15 July was supposed to be his 300th game for his beloved club ... only it was his 301st. His actual 300th came on the Saturday in the AFL Yarra Ranges Division 2 reserves - a 104-point win over Kinglake.

But on the 15th, he was able to mark his milestone alongside two of his great mates Daniel 'Little Pants' Pantorno, and club legend Matt 'Creepa' O'Neil.

Prior to this season, Pantorno last played for the Brookers more than a decade ago and little did he know at the time - finished up with just three games to go until his 200th for the club.

"I thought I had to be close to 190," he said, just prior to the vets' clash with the Villains.

"I thought I was probably in the 180s, so that'd be a full season, but I was really just a couple of games away! (from 200)."

Sunday the 15th was technically Pantorno's 202nd game for the Brookers.

He said the club meant the world to him in a footballing sense.

"I spent my whole (footballing) life playing there - from when I was eight years old," he said.

Pantorno tasted success as part of the reserves flag-winning side, while O'Neil and Allcott were in the seniors.

Steve Pantorno, Daniel's brother, has played well in excess of 400 games for the

Brookers and became the club's games record holder after surpassing their uncle, Len Ure. Work commitments have meant that Daniel - now in his late 30s - hasn't been able to string a full season of footy together since 2004.

But he would like to ideally keep playing for the vets beyond this season.

"At this point, everyone here is just one injury away from retirement," he said on Sunday.

"If I did something bad enough where I had to miss work, I'd probably have to hang up the boots.

"There's not a great deal of skill out there.

"The fitness and skill dissolves over time, but this is stress free - and to a certain extent bruise-free footy with your mates.

"Blokes don't go the knuckle or anything like that."

O'Neil is the current senior coach of the Brookers, while Allcott is the coach of the veterans' side.

O'Neil paid tribute to his great mate just before they ran out together against Marysville.

Allcott was taken aback - clearly unaware for the tribute that was to follow in front of the group.

"You've become the 12th member of the 300 club, Hawk, and a couple have gone on to play over 400," O'Neil said.

"It's a big effort, not just by what you've done for the senior club over the years, but also around the junior club.

"You're team manager of the seniors now and you've really put back into the club over a long period of time.

"In the 2004 grand final over at Woori Yallock he had a really good day and kicked three goals, but we get to Mad Monday and it's somehow turned into six goals and he was best on ground!

"But, Deano, you pull those colours on and you love playing for the club - not just footy, but cricket too.

"Fantastic effort, and I'm rapt to see you reach 300 games and run through that banner with you."

Whether that glorious marked 300 or 301, it really didn't matter. What mattered most was the mateship, and love of the jumper.
