Alcohol and drugs could also be a factor, with police awaiting blood test results.

The driver was travelling “an excessive amount above” the 80km/h speed limit on Princes Highway, Norlane, when he lost control at 4.40pm on Wednesday, Sgt Ramm said.

The ute veered off the road and slammed into two trees near a BP service station.

An ambulance helicopter airlifted the passenger, a Buchan man aged 42, to Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

He remained in a critical condition yesterday, a hospital spokesperson said.

Geelong Indy understands he was clinically dead at the scene before paramedics revived him.

An ambulance took the driver, a Norlane man aged 44, to University Hospital Geelong with serious injuries.

“He wasn’t as bad as the passenger,” Sgt Ramm said.

“The first impact was on the passenger side.”

Paramedics later transferred the man to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a stable condition, a Barwon Health spokesperson said.

The horror smash could have been worse if the ute missed the trees and collided with the service station instead, Sgt Ramm said.

“He could have wiped out half of the service station. He would have taken out the first two bowsers and probably half the shop if he did that.”

Police reopened the road at 5am yesterday after diverting traffic away from the scene on Wednesday. Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit was continuing investigations when the Indy went to press.

‘650 jobs’ in prison A new Lara prison will deliver a $173 million constuction windfall and 650 ongoing jobs for greater Geelong, according to State Government estimates.

The construction of the jail would create hundreds of additional direct and indirect jobs in manufacturing, building and engineering, according to Lara MP John Eren.

“The new prison will provide a huge boost to the local Geelong economy, with hundreds of jobs during construction and 650 ongoing positions once the facility is operational,” he said on Tuesday.

State Government has scheduled construction of the 700-bed maximum security prison to begin early next year.

Once complete the prison will create jobs for prison officers, psychologists, teachers, administrators, maintenance workers and allied

health professionals.

Businesses in Geelong could bid to supply goods and services during construction, Mr Eren said.

Local companies could also apply to provide services to staff working at the jail and visitors once construction had finished, he said.

He encouraged local businesses to visit the Industry Capability Network website to register their interest in supporting the project.

State Government has listed the jail construction at gateway.icn.org.au under ‘Prison Expansion Project.’

Prison numbers are currently the highest on record with more than 7200 people behind bars in Victoria by 30 March, according to ABS statistics.

The government’s police recruitment, population growth and “tougher sentencing

and bail laws” had caused prison numbers to increase, Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said.

State Government has estimated Victoria’s prison population will continue to expand.

“We’re keeping our state safe, by investing in a strong and secure prison system,” Ms Teirney said.

“The new prison is also part of ongoing and long-term planning to ensure the prison system is safe, secure, and well equipped to meet demand.”

The Andrews government committed $689.5 million in the 2018/19 State Budget to build the jail, which it says will open in 2022.

Deaf microbiologist plays guitar for charity

By Luke Voogt A legally-deaf guitarist will play at Waurn Ponds this weekend in his 218th stop on an Australiawide quest to raise money for Lifeline.

Former microbiologist and tai chi instructor Murray Mandel drove into Geelong on Tuesday after beginning his classical guitar tour in Canberra on 6 March 2017.

“I decided I wanted to do something for an Australian community service,” he said.

The 64-year-old Sydney-sider has raised $34,846 so far travelling the country in his van.

His tour continues until March 2020.

“It’s been very gruelling,” he said.

The tour was more about increasing awareness of the suicide-prevention helpline than raising money, Murray said.

“I’m taking my time reminding as many Australians as possible that Lifeline is actually there.”

Murray lost almost all his hearing from an imbalance in an oxygen tent he was placed inside 20 minutes after birth.

After 34 years as a hospital microbiologist in Tasmania he took on odd jobs ranging from concrete labouring to retail before deciding to to learn guitar five years ago.

Karl Hague will appeal his conviction and sentence for murdering teenager Ricky Balcombe in Geelong’s Market Square 23 years ago, Victoria's Supreme Court has confirmed.

Hague, who last month began a 26-year jail term for the stabbing murder, launched both appeals on 13 July, a spokesperson for the court told the Indy.

Speaking of Mayor Harwood, at a “briefing” this week to spruik his recent European tour he revealed that Air Asia offered him a lifeline out of criticism for his jet-setting ways.

The mayor uncharitably dubbed ’Bruce AllFlighty’ stopped into Kuala Lumpur on his way back from Europe.

Three hours into discussions Air Asia execs said they expected him back a fortnight later for the launch of the airline’s Avalon Airport service.

“I thought, ’Crikey I’ve got to go back in two weeks this won’t go down well’,” Bruce revealed.

But Air Asia offered to “look after” him with flights “in the front of the plane, not the back“ and accommodation too.

“They knew I’d been under the scrutiny of the media and the community,” Bruce said candidly.

"So I said, 'Thanks but we can’t accept that'.”

Well, it’s easy to be honourable when ratepayers cover the extra $1900 instead!

The century-old Geelong Cycling Club would have died if not for Sean Clark and the juniors he guides, according to his Club Legend nomination.

“Juniors are the lifeblood and future of the club,” wrote nominator John Miro.

“Everyone knows Sean and his wife as they’re always there at our races and training sessions.

“Sean leads by example in helping and rolling up his sleeves to do even the dirty jobs no one else is interested in.”

The nomination described the Barwon Heads father-of-four as “modest”.

Not surprisingly, Sean was “shocked” to learn of the nomination.

“I thought there probably would be another nomination from the club before me,“ he said.

“I just help out when I can.”

Three of Sean’s four sons cycle at the club, while his youngest rides a unicycle.

“When my eldest started (in 2011) there were no juniors - the youngsters rode with the seniors,” he said.

But under Sean, the club has had between 15 and 30 juniors for the last seven years.

Sean will vie for a share of more than $50,000 in prizes in Viva Energy’s Club Legend Awards.

He said any prize money he won for the club would go towards kit for the juniors.

“Cycling apparel is not cheap,” he said.

“It’s just to get the kids out there and get them noticed.”

While Sean concentrates mostly on getting kids active and teaching them to corner properly and ride safely in groups, he is always on the lookout for the next Cadel Evans.

“It would be great for the club and the region,” he said.

Twitter’s cull of fake accounts has certainly taken a toll on celebrities, especially the biggest name in Geelong.

While some of the world’s best-known celebrities lost many more followers, few could measure up by percentage to the massacre inflicted on former mayor Darryn Lyons.

Huge stars like Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry lost over one million followers each, but that was only two to three per cent of their Twitter base.

In contrast, our Darryn watched 500,000-plus fly out the window, more than 50 per cent of his followers.

Ouch!

But despite the loss, our man of the marvellous Mohawk still claims the largest Twitter fan-base of Geelong’s biggest names by far.

For example, Cats star Gary Ablett Jnr has 152,000 while actor Guy Pearce boasts a paltry 23,000. And then there’s incumbent mayor Bruce Harwood with … 76!

So regardless of his losses, Daz certainly still has a Twitter to crow about!

Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood has defended his recent council-funded European trip amid criticism from ratepayers.

But he admitted the trip lacked tangible benefits for Geelong ahead of presenting his findings to council next Tuesday.

“That wasn’t the purpose of the trip; to go and sign up businesses or (memorandums of understanding),” he told a media briefing on Wednesday.

The briefing followed Ratepayers Geelong slamming the 18-day, $18,000 “junket” and demanding that Cr Harwood produce “tangible outcomes“.

But the trip gave international exposure to Geelong industries such as bio-science and education, he said.

“These are things Geelong needs to tell the world about.”

Cr Harwood gave a three-minute speech to 51 mayors at the UNESCO Creative Cities Network’s annual general meeting in Poland, including a one-minute video showcasing Geelong. He later connected with people from across the world during a day of “constant discussion”.

“You can’t do that waiting for the phone to ring or staring at the computer screen,” Cr Harwood said.

“It’s like doing business with Asian communities, which I’ve done much of in my business life. The only way Asians build relationships is across the table.“ Cr Harwood said he gained invaluable insight into waste management visiting Dundee, Scotland, and Turin, Italy after Poland.

Both cities had been in a similar position to Geelong following the decline of their manufacturing sectors.

Cr Harwood said the average ratepayer would understand why he went overseas “given the right information and the right learnings”.

HIGH FLYER: Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood will brief council on his recent European trip next Tuesday.

He declined to rule out attending next year’s annual general meeting of the UNESCO network in Italy.

“The community will let us know what they think and I’m fine with that,“ he said.

He had “travelled quite a bit on different things“ as a councillor, including a controversial trip close to a council election, he said.

But a month later ratepayers re-elected him, he added.

A potential waste-to-energy plant in council’s designated industrial precinct could help solve Geelong’s landfill problems, according to Mayor Bruce Harwood.

Cr Harwood floated the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct (GREP) as a location for the “high-tech” plant at a media briefing on Wednesday.

“We cannot continue to put waste in the ground, letting that contaminate the soils and (leak) into the waterways,” he said.

The proximity of heavy industry and the ability to link in a plant with the grid made GREP a great location, Cr Harwood said.

“But again there are buffer zones and community issues to deal with.”

He made the comments ahead of talks on waste disposal with Wyndham and Ballarat councils in coming weeks.

Earlier this month Wyndham council flagged working with Geelong and Ballarat to build a $320 million waste-to-energy plant in Werribee.

“We’re having discussions on how a waste to energy plant might look in the west of Melbourne,” Cr Harwood said.

“We haven’t actually put a pin in the map by any stretch of the imagination.”

The talks were preliminary but moving quickly due to a “final time frame” on landfill at Drysdale, Cr Harwood said.

An international company would design a potential plant, Cr Harwood said.

“There have been a couple of companies that we’ve been taking advice from.”

But the construction and maintenance of the plant would create local jobs, he added.

WorkSafe hit again

By Luke Voogt Strong winds have damaged WorkSafe's headquarters a fortnight after its official opening, forcing council to close sections of Gheringhap St and Malop St. The damage shocked and angered some social media users, while others noted the irony of the situation.

"Will WorkSafe be conducting an investigation?" Andrew Jensen commented on a Geelong police page.

"Has anyone rung Worksafe to investigate?" asked Mark Reid.

Winds of up to 122km/h wreaked havoc in Geelong on Tuesday, damaging an eave on the southwest corner of the headquarters.

Engineers used a six-tonne crane to carry a scissor lift to a building balcony on Wednesday. They extended the scissor lift while battling 50km/h winds to secure the eave.

Employees went to work on Wednesday despite the damage, a WorkSafe spokesperson said.

"Staff are able to access the building safely through the Gheringhap St entrance," the spokesperson said.

"The building's owners (Quintessential Equity) are working with contractors and emergency services to repair the damage."

Police warned people to avoid the area on Tuesday night due to safety concerns and likely traffic disruptions due to road closures.

The incident is not the first time strong winds have caused chaos at the site.

During construction on 16 August, 2017, strong winds blew two sheets of plasterboard from the top of the building, which plummeted 14 storeys and shattered on Corio Street.

"If it had have hit someone it would have killed them," an anonymous witness told the Indy that day.

Whale savers target drones Drones will be targeted in a crackdown on harassment of whales off the Surf Coast, authorities have revealed.

Wildlife officers began patrolling to “protect whales” from Lorne to Apollo Bay and further down the coast this week.

Operation Lisburn would run through whale breeding season until the end of October, said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

The operation would “closely monitor drones and powered boats” to ensure they remained at a safe distance from critically endangered southern right whales and other whale species, DWELP said.

DWELP’s compliance operations program manager confirmed the focus on drone operators, with a warning of fines over $3000.

“Operation Lisburn will see a particular focus on the use of drones around whales, which is an emerging and challenging issue for us,” Mark Breguet said.

“In the last two years we’ve seen a sharp rise in suspected illegal drone activity around whales through content on social media and reports from the public about drones flying close to whales.

“We appreciate that drone operators are keen to capture photos and footage of these majestic mammals, however the buzzing from drone motors has the potential to distress whales. Unless drone operators have a special wildlife permit, these aircraft are not permitted to fly within 500 metres of whales.”

DWELP was investigating “several reports” in the past week alone of drones too close to whales at Portland, Mr Breguet said.

“We need the public to understand that when vessels or drones operate near whales, these vulnerable mammals are at risk of being distressed, or worse, struck and injured.”

Geelong trials cure for ice Geelong has joined a trial of new medication for ice which could help addicts beat their dependence on the life-ruining drug.

Local researchers hoped to recruit 60 Geelong addicts to help them stop using ice and investigate if N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) can reduce cravings.

“There’s clearly a need for something new around pharmaceutical therapy for ice addiction,” said Olivia Dean, from Deakin University’s IMPACT research centre.

“There are a lot of people seeking help at the moment.”

One person had signed up to the trial in Geelong so far after a week of recruiting, Dr Dean said.

Soon the participant will begin taking two NAC pills daily for 12 weeks to investigate its effects on ice addiction as part of the N-ICE trial.

Geelong researchers would spend up to 12 months screening users to recruit 60 participants, Dr Dean said.

“But I think we will probably get the number relatively quickly.”

National Drug Research Institute will recruit a total of 180 people for the trial from frontline clinical services in Geelong, Wollongong and Melbourne.

National Health and Medical Research Council has funded the trial, with a number of universities across the three cities supporting it.

NAC had many effects that might useful for people trying to stop taking ice, Dr Dean explained.

“NAC can protect against the neurotoxic effects of ice,” she said.

“It is hoped that, in addition to helping people dependent on ice cut down or stop their use, NAC will reduce the mood changes that are often experienced as a result of ice addiction.”

NAC has been available since 1968 to treat paracetamol overdose and various medical conditions.

But in 2015 neuroscientists began trialling the drug’s effectiveness in treating addiction.

N-ICE lead researcher Rebecca McKetin said

studies showed the drug could reduce cravings for methamphetamine use and other substances including cocaine, cannabis and tobacco.

“When someone first takes ice they experience the desirable effects of intoxication,” Prof McKetin said.

“But if they continue to use, and become dependent, changes occur in the brain that cause cravings, making it hard to stop using ice.

“NAC helps to reduce cravings by restoring the balance of chemicals in the brain that are involved in craving and drug-seeking, making it easier for people to manage their desire for the drug.”

Dr Dean urged locals struggling with addiction to visit www.nicetrial.info.

Hub work starts ‘years later’ Construction has begun on a long-awaited replacement community centre for one of Geelong’s most disadvantaged areas.

Ward councillor Anthony Aitken acknowledged the community’s “patience” after waiting “many years” for the Rosewall Community Hub when he attended the construction launch at Corio on Tuesday.

City Hall will spend $3.8 million building the hub immediately behind Rosewall Neighbourhood Centre, without funding from other levels of government.

Activities at the Sharland Rd neighbourhood centre will transfer to the hub after its completion, which City Hall has scheduled for early 2019.

“We (council) thank the community for their patience with this project, which has seen many years pass since the original vision to redevelop this important asset in the north,” Cr Aitken said.

Big hopes for local ‘super bridge’ idea

By Luke Voogt “Super” bridges requiring no maintenance for a century could span rivers and roads in Geelong - and worldwide - if an ambitious local engineering project succeeds.

Geelong engineers won a council tender for two pedestrian bridges with 100-year design lives to replace existing timber structures spanning Cowies Creek, at North Geelong.

“This project, developed in Geelong, is an example of how we can lead the way in bringing sustainable solutions to the market,” Geelong deputy mayor Peter Murrihy said.

Timber, steel and concrete bridges around Geelong cost council about $500,000 a year in maintenance, he added.

Geelong-based engineering firm Austeng, Deakin University’s Carbon Nexus and concrete company Rocla designed the tenderwinning bridges, and construction will begin this year.

The local engineering consortium would use carbon fibre and geopolymer to build them, explained Austeng managing director Ross George.

If successful, the technology could replace thousands of council-owned bridges across Australia, he said.

“Future opportunities are immense.“ The project could kick start a new Geelongbased industry, Mr George said.

“There is no reason this product cannot ultimately be used for structural purposes such as multi-storey buildings.”

Council offered the tender through a ‘procurement for innovation’ process to encourage the development of clean technology.

Corio 'prices skyrocketing' Corio and Norlane are leading regional Victoria for property price growth, according to latest data.

Corio’s median house price “skyrocketed” 33 per cent to $353,000 over the 12 months to June and Norlane was up 32.7 per cent to $345,000, the Real Estate Institute marvelled this week.

Newcomb was next in line with a 29.4 per cent increase taking its median value to $440,000.

“There must be something in the water around Geelong with the suburbs of Corio, Norlane and Newcomb being the best performers if we look at the annual picture,” said REIV chief Gil King.

He compared the three working-class Geelong suburbs with an average four per cent increase to $419,500 across regional Victoria.

Mr King also noted that Geelong and the Surf Coast also had the three most expensive addresses.

Barwon Heads topped the list with a median price of $925,250, up 8.2 per cent.

Torquay was next with a 10.4 per cent rise to $795,000.

Newtown was the third most-expensive after an eight per cent increase lifted its median price to $777,500.

Mr King singled out the rapid price rises in Geelong as a separate property value monitor also noted the city’s growth.

Core Logic released a statement this week questioning whether price growth was slowing in regional centres around Australia but confirming Geelong was bucking the trend.

Geelong had “seen the most-rapid growth in values of all regional markets in the country over the past year,” Core Logic said.

“Over the period values have increased by 11 per cent and the rate of growth is slightly higher than the 10.7 per cent increase a year ago.”

The development would have been worth $4 billion and thousands of jobs to Geelong, Ridley Corporation said at the time.

But the proposal was shelved following the election of Victoria's Labor Government.

“The Andrews Government scrapped those discussions and began the Moolap plan in December 2014,” Mr Ramsay said.

In response, Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said she made “no apology” for the government “doing more work to get this right.”

Ms D’Ambrosio in March anticipated a decision on the final Moolap plan in mid-2018.

But State Government was still finalising the plan after further consideration of buffer zones, she told the Indy on Wednesday.

“We know the importance of the Moolap coast for migratory shorebirds birds and we’re developing a management plan for the area that will take their habitat into account.“

Environmentalists have demanded State Government release its coastal plans for Moolap following fears the critically-endangered curlew sandpiper could become extinct.

Curlew sandpiper numbers were rapidly declining and the bird would die out under existing conditions, Birdlife Australia’s Connie Lee warned.

“This is an urgent issue,” she said.

The 23cm-high bird migrated from breeding grounds in Siberia to Moolap and back annually, Ms Lee said.

“We love seeing these incredible birds around Moolap in summer when they come to forage along the coastline.”

But Australia’s existing laws allowed the ongoing devastation of sandpiper habitats, Ms Lee said.

Birdlife Australia met local environmentalists at a community forum in central Geelong on Tuesday night to discuss plans to protect the sandpiper.

“Today we’re calling on Geelong’s bird lovers to join us in ensuring a future for Geelong’s threatened shorebirds,“ Ms Lee. “Their future depends on all of us.”

Geelong Field Naturalists Club’s John Newman demanded State Government release its Moolap Coastal Strategic Framework Plan after it completed consultation in May 2017.

“The people of Geelong are passionate about our local birdlife and disappointed about the infuriating lack of transparency and bitter neglect of the Environment Minister to action the management plan for Moolap,” Dr Newman said.

“This plan has been stalled, stuck on a desk in the dark, while valuable birdlife like the curlew sandpiper suffer the consequences.”

Local coalition MP Simon Ramsay in March called for the release of the Moolap coastal plan, slamming State Government’s “secrecy” after years of consultation.

The 1200-hectare area for the plan includes a former Alcoa aluminium smelter site and rolling mill at Point Henry along with a disused Cheetham Salt works, farming land and existing industrial areas.

LETTERS Politicians make homeless In response to 'Tenant' (Buckets & Bouquets, 29 June), Simon Ramsay (Letters, 6 July), and Gary Oraniuk (Letters, 13 July), the ultimate cause of homelessness and people sleeping on our streets is government policy over the past few decades.

At the federal level, Australia's once-effective social security system has been dismantled and USA-style punishment of socially and financially disadvantaged people has been adopted, including cutting off payments to those who can't jump through the hoops. The federal policy has been driven by pressure from the corporate sector to have its tax contribution reduced.

At the state level successive Victorian governments since the early 1980s have neglected public housing and changes to the Residential Tenancies Act have favoured those wishing to make a profit from buying properties to rent out.

Australia needs a social security system that is compassionate, not punitive.

Sleep-outs will not stop homelessness. Real changes to policy and legislation will.

If Mr Ramsay really is concerned about homelessness he will lobby local federal politicians to raise the matter in parliament.

All our local state politicians should also lobby for the immediate injection of plentiful funds into public housing so new properties can be purchased and built.

They should also lobby for reform of the Residential Tenancies Act so it functions on the principle that secure, affordable accommodation is a basic human right, not function for the interests of profiteers.

The “new power plants” recommended will have to generate baseload dispatchable power yet the Victorian Government is closing reliable generators while subsidising so-called renewables such as wind and solar.

Renewables generators are intermittent and have to be backed up by gas or coal at extra cost yet electricity suppliers are required under renewable energy targets to preference renewables ahead of gas and coal, which are not designed for such stop-gap use.

The Federal Government has demands from within its party to help finance two HELE coal generators to replace Hazelwood, which the Victorian Government forced to close, and New South Wales’ Liddell, which is soon to close and without which our electricity supply will suffer the unreliability assured by wind and solar.

Renewable energy targets must be scrapped.

Saving our industrial and manufacturing capacity is more important than chasing green fairies, as our politicians are doing.

These active groups comprise young people, families, grandparents and other individuals who believe that refugees and asylum seekers are people just like us and deserve a fair go rather than criticism and blatant prejudice.

The company’s latest sign, ‘Call it out’, which focuses on domestic violence, is wellintentioned but too simplistic. No one condones violence against women, children or anyone else.

What has escaped Villawood’s attention is that three out of four victims of male violence are men who are hospitalised or killed.

Most surveys show that domestic violence perpetrators are around 40 per cent female and 60 per cent male. Domestic violence is a complex issue because it involves alcoholism, drugs, unemployment, intimacy issues, money, and psychological issues.

The anti-male bias of gender politics has destroyed rationality and open discussion about gender and masks the real problems of many men and their families.

MP survey off the rails I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or feel insulted when I received Liberal Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsey’s train service survey in the mail.

The survey had two photos of trains, one of which was an old red rattler that Mr Ramsay labelled ‘Labor’, which we had to put up with running hourly when the Liberals were last in government and failed to build a single carriage.

The other was one of the new trains the Andrews Government has built in Victoria. Mr Ramsay labelled it ‘Liberal’ and stated it would somehow be faster, quieter and more-comfortable under a Liberal Government.

Mr Ramsay then criticised state Labor for spending money on fast-train planning while he trumpeted the Federal Government’s proposed funding of regional rail, which he had nothing to do with.

I would prefer that Mr Ramsey did not take voters for fools, developed and explained real transport policies, and stopped wasting taxpayers’ money on rubbish poorly disguised as information.

Rocking on for ‘Christmas’

By Luke Voogt The Rockelles will bust out the tinsel and mistletoe when they bring Christmas to North Geelong next week.

Penni Perrin, one half of the Melbourne cover duo, returned to performing ten weeks after giving birth to her fourth child, who is now a year old.

“My first gig back was actually at the Sphinx,” she said.

“I was meant to have a longer break after the birth of my last child but I ended up going back earlier than planned.”

Perrin got the call up from her ABBA tribute act SOS last year and has continued to sing since.

Her weekend gigs allowed her to be a fulltime mother throughout the week rather than juggling parenting with a 9 to 5 job, she said.

“Although I only do gigs near Melbourne now. I used to be able to jump in the car and drive to Albury.”

SOS is just a part of Perrin’s tribute repertoire.

She also sings in a Fleetwood Mac act and 90s cover group Cherry Lips with her guitarplaying, train-driving fiancee David Jones.

“Cherry Lips is our passion project,” she said.

“There’s very little money in it but we’re playing all the stuff that we love.”

She has even sung as Stevie Nicks and Frida in the same night.

“I do have a knack for being able to change my voice,” she said.

“To thrash your voice as Stevie Nicks and then have to get rid of the husk - Frida’s voice is quite clean - I found that really challenging.”

Perrin was keen to belt out some Christmas classics when the duo brings Xmas in July to Morning Melodies at the Sphinx Hotel on 25 July.

“Morning Melodies are fun already anyway,” she said.

“The Xmas in July is always pretty jolly.

They dress the place up with tinsel and there are raffles and giveaways.”

Comedy king ‘back’

By Luke Voogt 'King of Comedy' Jerry Lewis comes back to life at Club Italia on Saturday.

Well, almost.

Impersonator Tony Lewis will visit the club after touring Australia and the world for decades as the legendary comedian.

Lewis's journey to become an impersonator began early.

“I’ve been doing impressions since I was about five or six,“ he said.

“I did impressions that were fairly realistic of my teachers.“ At age 17 Lewis entered the stand-up circuit and soon after he was doing voiceovers for radio commercials.

An agent approached him after he started working in comedy and suggested impersonating Jerry Lewis.

“I thought OK I’ll give it a shot and it just worked,“ he said.

His uncanny resemblance to Jerry Lewis only strengthened the illusion, he said.

Lewis has met his world-famous namesake three times and was the only impersonator to feature in 2016 documentary The Man Behind the Clown, about the comedy legend before his death.

“He was proud that I did him correctly. I do my own material but use his voice and mannerisms,“ Lewis said.

“What would be the point of just doing his material for a modern audience?“ Lewis's abilities and resemblance to his hero have seen him perform on TV programs like The Bert Newton Show and on stage in Las Vegas.

His Club Italia will also features whacky characters like the Nutty Professor.

Lewis has also performed for Opera Australia and impersonated Get Smart’s Don Adams, Rocky Balboa, Eddie Murphy, Elvis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in radio commercials.

He travels in and out of the USA touring as Jerry Lewis, and is known worldwide as the star's quintessential tribute artist.

Lewis has raised money and headlined many shows for children with Leukaemia, MS, Autism and disabilties.

Comedians Frank Lotito and Gabriel Rossi will join him as special guest performers for Saturday's show.

Bingo enthusiasts in Geelong’s northern suburbs now have somewhere to meet lifelong friends and indulge their passion for lucky numbers.

Raiders Bingo Centre this week set up a new twice-weekly game at Bell Park Sport & Recreation Club at Hamlyn Heights.

“It’s basically establishing a game of bingo in the northern suburbs,” says Raiders Bingo manager Russell Enders.

Russell runs Raiders Bingo Centre at Breakwater, which has been going since 1998.

“A lot of people enjoy a game of bingo - they want somewhere where they don’t have to travel to this side of town,” he says.

Bingo started at Bell Park Sport & Recreation Club on Tuesday and now runs for two hours each Sunday and Tuesday at the venue.

Russell has seen players become lifelong friends during bingo at Breakwater.

“They come in and have their seats together chat away and then they go home,” he says.

Bingo is much more social than other forms of gaming, Russell explains.

“People come here because, A, it's social, B, they’ve got a chance to win a few bob and, C, it’s fun.”

Raiders Bingo Centre will still run all its usual day and night sessions at Breakwater throughout the week.

Proceeds will go to not-for-profit causes like sports clubs and leagues, Russell says.

Korean couple Kate Park and Jungmin Seo opened the restaurant in December after a decade creating cuisine in Melbourne.

“In Melbourne there are a lot of Korean restaurants and it’s very popular,” Kate says.

“I think in Geelong it will be the same.”

Oriental.K’s food is as authentic as it gets, Kate says. Her husband and head chef Jungmin had a restaurant in Seoul where he specialised in traditional Japanese katsu.

He knows how to cook juicy, tender, crumbed pork fillets to perfection, says Kate, who worked as a chef in a Japanese restaurant.

“Customers try Min’s katsu and they never stop.”

The Department of Justice and Regulation is seeking Expressions of Interest from members of the Lara and Greater Geelong community to be part of a Prison Expansion Community Advisory Group.

The Prison Precinct expansion is part of ongoing planning to ensure the prison system is safe, secure, and well-equipped to meet demand.

The Community Advisory Group will have input into areas of community interest on the building of the new maximum security prison of at least 700 beds in Lara, in the vicinity of the existing Lara Prison Precinct which includes Barwon Prison and Marngoneet Correctional Centre.

The group will provide a forum for information sharing as the project progresses, and will inform details about how the design of the facility addresses matters such as traffic management, car parking, lighting, noise impact, visual impact, landscaping, flora and fauna, and environmental issues.

To be considered for the group, participants will need to be: • recognised as a contributor to the local community • prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the CAG • demonstrate an understanding of local issues within Lara that relate to the project • have a connection with Greater Geelong, either as a resident or a business owner.

Providing a new maximum-security facility is an essential part of the Government’s commitment to improving community safety.

The Victorian Government is committed to keeping the community informed about the planning and construction this new prison.

By Ewan Kennedy Mazda has introduced a limited edition to its MX-5 RF retractable fastback range.

It is priced at $55,748 driveaway and is on sale now. Only 110 have been produced for Australia and these are moving out of the dealerships fast.

The MX-5 RF Limited Edition is offered in Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Snow Flake, White Pearl Mica, Ceramic Metallic and Eternal Blue Mica. Our test car was a white one - pity because we really have fallen in love with the Soul Red that has taken Mazda sales by storm.

This is no dressed up toy that’s all show and no go. It's a serious machine with changes to the body, suspension and brakes. New design 17-inch BBS alloy wheels in an attractive new design are part of the deal.

Major features are based around the Mazda Kuroi Sports Pack with aerodynamic additions that see small winglets near the front of the wheelarch openings. These direct air away from the wheels and along the sides of the body to smooth out the rush of air and improve speed. A front strut bar links the front suspension towers to increase chassis stiffness.

Mazda MX-5 RF has the 118 kW, 200 Nm 2.0-litre engine that's used in the convertible MX-5. There are no current plans to bring it here with the optional 1.5-litre unit used in the convertible. Naturally drive is to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Want a Mazda MX-5 with an automatic transmission because you can’t be bothered changing gears yourself? Tough luck - this edition only comes with the lovely slick-shifting six-speed manual.

Handling is sharp and feedback through the wheel and the seat of your pants is excellent. You can control it on the throttle to really balance it beautifully in bends and it simply cries out for an interesting series of tight twisting up-hill-and-down-dale roads.

As a naturally aspirated unit the engine has the near instantaneous throttle response that’s simply not there in even the best turbocharged units.

There’s a fair bit of road noise on rough n’ ready Australian backroads, but we’ve hard worse in similar sporty cars. In any case, hearing the road under you is all part of the fun.

Brembo’s opposed-piston, four-pot front brake calipers not only provide harder braking in heavy duty use, but also reduce unsparing weight by a significant two kilograms. The Brembos can increase fade resistance by as much as 26 per cent. A significant advantage if you want to take part in track days.

The roof can be powered open and closed at speeds of up to 10 km/h. It consists of front, middle and rear roof sections and rear window glass. When the roof is opened, the front and middle roof sections are stowed together with the back window glass in the space behind the seats.

No boot space is lost, so the volume remains at 130 litres, which is enough to hold two carryon aircraft bags.

The Mazda MX-5 RF is delightful little sports coupe with an opening roof that turns it almost into a convertible. This special edition is a fair dinkum one with real changes to its suspension and brakes that will please those who want to get serious in their driving - particularly on their early Sunday morning runs.

Top four on the line

By Justin Flynn With just six games left in the home and away season, tomorrow night’s potentially epic encounter between Geelong and Melbourne shapes as season-defining in every way.

The winner will still cling to hopes of making the top four while the loser will be locked in a battle just to make the finals.

The Demons are sixth on the ladder and a game outside the top four but have secondbest percentage in the competition, which could prove vital come the end of round 23.

The Cats are in eighth spot, with just percentage separating them from North Melbourne and Hawthorn.

The Roos and the Hawks did Geelong a huge favour last weekend by losing their games, otherwise Geelong would have found itself in 10th position.

Cat Cory Gregson will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a recurrence of a stress fracture to his navicular while exciting youngster Nakia Cockatoo suffered a PCL injury early in Sunday’s VFL game.

Demon co-captain Jack Viney will miss a month of footy after a foot injury flared up for the second time this season.

While a loss tomorrow night would severely dent Geelong’s premiership aspirations, the Cats have a relatively comfortable run home.

While nothing is a certainty, the Cats have three GMHBA Stadium games against Brisbane, Fremantle and Gold Coast in what should be wins. Richmond at the MCG presents perhaps the toughest challenge in footy while Hawthorn at the MCG is always a 50/50.

Melbourne is averaging a whopping 105 points per game, but Geelong has conceded an average of 56 points from five games at GMHBA Stadium. Since 2015, Geelong has won just once in 18 attempts when its opposition has scored 100 points or more.

Rhys Stanley faces his biggest test when he comes up against the AFL’s best ruckman in Max Gawn.

“But we definitely need one in the next six weeks otherwise we’re not going to make finals. Geelong’s a good start.“ Gawn missed a sitter in the final seconds to deny Melbourne a victory against Geelong ear-

lier in the season.

“I’m more than happy to be involved in the same situation again. I don’t know how I would react on the Monday if it doesn’t go my way again, but we’re pretty excited to face Geelong,“ Gawn said.

Geelong has an edge in the midfield with Joel Selwood, Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan, Gary Ablett and Tim Kelly, but Melbourne also has Clayton Oliver and Angus Brayshaw in superb form.

Tomorrow night’s game is at GMHBA Stadium and starts at 7.25pm.

Warriors' dream run ends with a nightmare

By Josip Zilic Just as Croatia’s dream run in the World Cup was stifled by a pre-tournament favourite, so too did North Geelong Warriors’ undefeated streak end at the hands of NPL2 promotion favourite Altona Magic.

The contest won’t get any easier, either, with the Warriors facing sister club St Albans Saints on Sunday at Churchill Reserve. St Albans sits third, just ahead of North Geelong on equal points.

St Albans managed a 1-0 win last week against Sunshine after starting brightly.

After missing a penalty in the 10th minute St Albans was forced into a scrap and eventually got ahead in the 45th minute thanks to Roddy Covarrubias.

The result almost took a turn for the worse in the last minute of the match when the referee awarded a penalty to Sunshine, which ended up not being converted.

North Geelong will need to work on man-

aging control for longer periods after allowing the opposition to dictate the tempo of the match at Altona.

Going down inside five minutes is often a sign of concentration lapses, on which coach James Coutts will be hot for the week.

Despite the early set back, the Warriors fought back when Darius Madison converted a Dom Marafioti set piece in the 39th minute only to allow Altona in again a few minutes later, leaving North Geelong 2-1 down just before half time.

Altona sensed its opportunity to strike and keep at the Warriors, capitalising again five minutes into the second half to go 3-1.

With the last quarter of the season now in play, attention will turn to who can maintain form and set the scene for who finishes in the promotion hunt among the three sides separated by a point for second spot.

Good form continued for North Geelong’s under-20s though with a 2-1 win thanks to goals courtesy of Ben Tucak and Marco Farrel.

Big fish on bite in bay ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Corio Bay’s inner-harbour produced impressive snapper after dark over the past week.

Anglers caught fish to 7kg while fishing at anchor around the Western Beach moorings. Some anglers reported seeing large schoolS of big snapper on their sounders, which is always a good sign even though it never guarantees a bite.

Flathead over 40cm were caught inside the grammar school lagoon, along with the odd pinkie.

Garfish were caught land-based at St Helen’s and Limeburner’s Point boat ramps. Fishing lightly weighted bits of squid, pippie or silverfish under a small float with a light burley trail worked well and also took bream over 35cm as a surprising bycatch.

Squid were present in good numbers and size from Clifton Springs right around to St Leonards. Using size three to 3.5 jigs while drifting over weed beds was productive method, with colours resembling baitfish or whiting doing well.

Queenscliff Harbour was an exciting location for big silver trevally and salmon. Anglers casting soft plastics caught numerous fish an hour either side of tide changes.

Point Lonsdale Pier again produced salmon pushing 3kg for anglers casting metal lures.

Local surf beaches also fished well for salmon during the day, with gummy sharks and mulloway beached after dark. Baits such as fresh salmon, trevally and squid worked well.

Small Surf Coast estuaries fished fantastically for bream whether using lure, fly or bait. Big tides and heavy rains opened a number of the creeks to the ocean, with the fish responding well to small suspending minnow lures, grubstyle soft plastics and baits such as small yabbies and scrub worms.

Freshwater fishing was also terrific as a number of lakes across the region produced quality trout.

Trolling the edges of Lake Purrumbete produced trophy fish, while dropping scrub worms or soft plastics into schools of redfin also worked.

Next door, Lake Bullen Merri fished well for rainbow trout and chinook salmon from boats or the bank.
