“My son is no angel - he has behavioural problems of his own that he needs to sort out. But no-one deserves to be assaulted.” Any witnesses to the attacked are urged to contact Constable Bradbury at Pakenham Police 59452500.

Police are investigating the assault of an 11-year-old at John Street Pakenham around 3pm on Sunday 15 July. Pakenham boy Blake Hare was spending time with friends at the playground when two unknown male teenagers approached him and assaulted him. “I was on the tiny tramp with my friends when someone picked me up and threw me on the ground,” James said. “Another one punched me in the face. “I didn’t even know them.” When he got up one of the offenders punched him in the face causing him to hit his head on the ground, getting a blood nose in the process. A passer-by who witnessed the attack took James to the library to for medical attention. Blake’s mum Tammy was shocked to see the state of her son when he arrived home. “I was just numb,” Tammy said. “What angers me the most is thinking about how many other people would have been at the park that day, and yet no one did anything. “One kind gentleman led him to the library to get cleaned up, and a few people have since sent me personal messages, but that’s it. “He will not be going back to that park.” Blake said his friends yelled at the two males, who took off on their scooters after assaulting him.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Locky Ellis, Cranbourne South resident and aspiring photographer

What or who got you interested in photography? My Aunty Terry used to always take photos of animals and nature and through her I got my love for taking photos, she even got one of her photos into the National Geographic. What was your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment would be when I was in Grade 5 I went on a family holiday to Exmouth and I went swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo Reef. It was so amazing to be so close to the massive creatures as they peacefully swam by me. What are you going to do on the school holidays? Over the school holidays I plan on hanging out with my friends, reading a few books that I got for Christmas, going to see some new movies out in the cinema, especially the Incredibles 2 and having some rest time considering we just finished exams at school. My family also plans on going to the Werribee Zoo for a night time tour which I am excited for because I love animals. What is your favorite movie? As a kid my all-time favourite movie was Arthur and the Invisibles Trilogy, I loved it because it mixed real life with fantasy and it had a great characters. Footy team you support and why? I support Essendon Football Club and I have barracked for that team since I was born because that's the team my dad goes for and a family friend brought me a membership the year I was born. So I didn't get much of a choice in the matter. At school I...... At school I love doing the production each year, this year’s was Fame. I love doing it because all of the people are so nice and friendly. I also enjoy my math subjects and hanging out with friends.

Favorirte holiday spot in Australia? My favorite holiday place in Australia to go is definitely Rottnest Island, it has the most amazing views and awesome beaches to sun bake and lagoons to go snorkeling in. As well as that the island is filled with adorable little quokkas that, if you're lucky, let you hand feed them and pat them. Which six dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? The six people I would invite to dinner would be: My Aunty Terry who passed away late last year so I could see her again. David Attenborough because I have loved watching his shows throughout my whole childhood. Steve Irwin because I share his love for animals and I have always wanted to meet him. I feel like everyone would say this but I think meeting the Queen would be an amazing experience so I would

also invite the Queen. The next person I would invite would be Lin Manuel Miranda, the man who played Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton because he is amazing at what he does and is love to meet him. The last person I would invite would be Tom Holland, the guy who plays Spider-Man in the marvel movies. He seems like a really nice person and I would love to meet him. What's your favorite book? My favorite book would have to be The Giver because it explores a futuristic way of life and I find it very interesting to read and analyse. Which band or singer would you most like to see live? If I could see anyone live in concert I would definitely see Shawn Mendes because I love his music.

THREE ‌ ways to save your skin this winter

1

Apply your moisturiser immediately after your shower, and by immediately after I mean within the first two minutes of turning the tap off. This is when the skin can soak up the most hydration from using a moisturiser and also the layer the moisturiser puts on the skin will stop extra water loss at the skin's surface.

2

Stop using soap. Soap has ingredients which dry the skin and strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Pharmacies and health food stores carry many options for soap alternatives which often have moisturising and nourishing natural ingredients to work with your skin and keep it healthy.

3

At night choose to use a thicker or heavier moisturiser, especially on your legs and hands which can really suffer through winter. A heavier moisturiser or ointment stays on the skin for longer, preventing water loss and strengthening the skin's natural barrier.

Train headaches in works By Brendan Rees Commuters will face days of train pain with disruptions hitting the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Dandenong lines as platforms are extended next month to cater for new high-capacity metro trains. As part of an 11-day August construction blitz, buses will replace trains between Saturday 4 August and Monday 14 August on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines past Dandenong as part of the construction blitz. Replacement buses will run between Dandenong and Cranbourne from 4-5 August, between Dandenong and Pakenham from 4-12 August, then between Westall, Cranbourne and Pakenham on 13 and 14 August. During this time, there will be express bus services between Westall and Cranbourne and Pakenham, and additional services that will stop at all stations. Acting Minister for Public Transport Luke Donnellan said the upgrades were urgently needed to keep up with demand on Melbourne's busiest train lines. "We ask passengers to bear with us through these disruptions as we work towards creating

Buses will replace trains on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines next month. 182808 Picture: GARY SISSONS the train service that Victorians expect." "Unless we act now, the system will eventually run itself into the ground," he said. Works will include building longer platforms and replace ageing rail infrastructure to improve train reliability. Opposition Public Transport Minister David

Davis said the biggest question was "Why on earth didn't they do some of this upgrade work while they had the line out of action with the sky rail construction?" "Why couldn't they do both of them at once instead of inconveniencing people twice," he said.

"There's already been month and months of disruption. Everyone understands the various upgrade works need to occur but surely you'd think they could coordinate those works with the earlier works." Mr Davis said there had been a "pretty big deterioration" with punctuality services on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. "Daniel Andrews has got to explain why he can't run the railways." Public Transport User's Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said upgrading the rail system was vital to cope with population growth. However he said it was a shame that the works would cause a disruption. "Hopefully authorities are doing everything they can to minimise the impact. It's critical that they provide enough buses and staff to help things run smoothly. They should also be looking at bus priority measures wherever possible to help packed buses avoid getting stuck in traffic," Mr Bowen said. The high-capacity Metro train are expected to carry up to 20 per cent more passengers while providing a more "spacious, comfortable ride."

Making the most of life By Brendan Rees Richard Mittra counts himself lucky. It was only seven months ago that he survived a horrific motorbike accident. But today he's back doing what he loves most - dancing. The 73-year-old recalled hopping on his 250cc scooter at his home in Berwick and began heading towards Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links in Upper Beaconsfield to play golf on the 31 November last year. Mr Mittra had barely driven 500 metres along Inglis Road when he approached the intersection of Inglis Road and BeaconsfieldEmerald Road near Cardinia Park Hotel. It was at this point that his life was about to change. "I lost traction because and I left the road and I ended I ended up in a culvert," he said. "The bike flipped over and hit me and pushed me against a tree stump. As a consequence, I broke five ribs, fractured my right hand, dislocated my left hand, damaged both my knees, punctured my left lung, and crushed

my left kidney. "I was in so much pain, I couldn't breathe. I didn't know at the time with my lungs that were punctured that that was the problem," he said. According to Mr Mittra, on the day of the accident he saw a couple of workers spraying weeds on the side of the road and chemical residue spreading to the road. He was taken to Casey Hospital where he spent four days in intensive care and nine days in trauma. Today, Mr Mittra has returned to his passion in ballroom and Latin dancing. "I hadn't dance for a long, long time," he says. "I reached quite a good level because I had a very good teacher," he said, adding he had taken up dancing at the age of 55. Mr Mittra said only a few weeks ago he had seen an advertisement in the Berwick Star News for dance lessons at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne. "Not only is it a great recreation, it's a great

Sex offender accused of grooming teen online By Cam Lucadou-Wells A registered-for-life sex offender has been refused bail on allegations of persuading a 15-year-old girl to perform a sexual act on Facebook. Richard Kelly, 34, appeared at Dandenong Magistrates' Court after police raided and seized electronic devices from his room at a Cranbourne boarding house on 9 July. He was accused of grooming the girl for about a year through a Facebook pseudonym account, informant Detective Senior Constable

David Matthews told the court the same day. She had allegedly told him she was 14 on the first occasion they spoke in April 2017. Over the following months, Kelly allegedly asked if she liked cuddles and requested a photo of her. He responded: "Wow you're very cute", the court was told. She was asked if she smoked or did drugs like "meth", where she lived and if she wanted to do a video call, the court heard. "Can I have another picture of you, babe?"

he allegedly wrote. In April this year, Kelly communicated with the girl on his mobile phone, the court heard. "Hey, it's Richard", he said before allegedly directing her to "now delete our conversation on Facebook". That night, he encouraged her to send an explicit image, leading to a charge of penetrating a child under 16, the court heard. After the girl broke off contact, Kelly allegedly contacted her with another Facebook pseudonym account.

Kelly used the profile picture of a 15-year-old boy on the account, with the girl unaware of the 'boy's' true identity, Det Sen Const Matthews said. During the recent bail hearing, he had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' due to the serious charge and being on a community corrections order at the time. Magistrate Pauline Spencer ruled Kelly failed to produce "special, different or out-of-the-ordinary" evidence to justify bail. He was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 13 July.

Rotary gives a welcome By Brendan Rees Rotary Club of Berwick's newest inductee Adwin Town says he can't wait to get started in helping the community. "I wanted to give back the community," said the Clyde North resident. "A lot of people say 'You're over 70 why don't you take a rest' and I say 'No.'" Born in Shanghai, Mr Town was educated in Hong Kong before migrating to Australia in 1985. He works as a senior migration consultant in pro bono services for the Australia for Christ Church in Rowville. "In Casey, there are a lot of new migrants coming here. A lot of them they need some advice and service, so I'm thinking I try to give them help," he said. The club welcomed Mr Town at its changeover dinner 57th changeover dinner at Holm Park Reserve Pavilion on Wednesday 4 July in front of more than 87 guests. Past president Ricardo Balancy was honoured to induct Mr town: "Memberships in Rotary is an honour and priviledge and every priviledge has its corresponding obligations," he said. "They endeavour to practice the principals of goodwill and service." Mr Town also hopes to seek grants from state and federal levels to assist in education and migration for families living in the City of Casey so they can "stand on their own feet. Narre Warren's Fleetwood Primary School transformed into a sea of colour on Friday 19 June with the school holding its inaugural colour explosion run. The event marked the end of the term and was used to help raise funds for extra seats and tables at the school. Year 5 teacher Jasmin Rush said 384 students from Foundation to Grade 6 participated in the fun run with a variety of obstacles and activities set up. "Families were welcome to attend, with many younger siblings getting involved. The school's FACE committee ran a fantastic barbeque," Mr Rush said. "The fun run was also a lovely reward after a long 11 week term."

As a 19-year-old high school graduate, Connor Noonan had no idea what career path to explore. "Apart from not wanting a desk job, I had no real idea about what I wanted to do. I was just applying for any job that would take me, and figured something would come up," Connor says. At an interview, Connor was told about the Citi New Recruits Program. Having never been employed before, he saw the program as a valuable experience that would look good on his resume and open up job opportunities, so he signed up. "I found the program incredibly helpful," Connor says, "it taught me a range of important skills and gave me more confidence when going in for a job - it was really worth my time." One year on, the 20 year-old Berwick resident is thriving as a parks and gardens apprentice at Haileybury College in Keysborough. And just last week he was announced as one of four scholarship winners on 11 July who will travel to Sydney for a cultural and career development experience for a week. "I was very surprised but also excited because it'll give me a good opportunity to expand my knowledge on what I'm currently learning at TAFE and work," says Connor. Kicking goals for good sports Casey Council has launched a new program aimed at inspiring, encouraging and breaking down barriers to get more women and girls involved in sport and physical activity. Council kicked off the We Are We Can We Will program at Casey Stadium recently, featuring an inspirational presentation from Olympic freestyle swim champion Elka Whalan Graham and a group fitness activity delivered by former Melbourne Vixens netballer, Ashlee Howard. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. "Through this campaign, council aims to empower and support more women and girls to get active and get involved in sport and recreation opportunities in the local community," he said. "While it's widely known that being active is important for our physical and mental health, research shows that females of all ages generally have lower physical activity participation rates than males, female participation through sporting or recreational clubs is lower and women and girls generally experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active. "As we roll-out this program initially over the next 12 months, Council hopes to inspire, boost confidence, reduce stigma and stereotypes and address barriers to participation to support more women and girls to get active." Through We Are We Can We Will, Council will be: Sharing the stories of local campaign ambassadors who are involved in sport and active recreation in a range of ways. Promoting a variety of local sport and recreation opportunities that exist across Casey. Providing learning and development opportunities that increase the skills of women and girls enabling greater involvement across all aspects of the sector. Hosting a summit that will bring together women and girls from across Casey to take part in workshops, roundtables, practical sessions and panel sessions.

Domestic attacker ‘a risk’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old Berwick man accused of drunkenly assaulting his family has been told he had little chance of being granted bail. The man applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 16 July after being remanded for slapping his sister and striking his father-in-law's face during the weekend incident.

He had been having a good time, drinking with his brother at his mother's house, he told the court. It had been the first time he'd had a drink for a while, he said. "I lost myself in my drink." He tearfully added that he'd let down a lot of people, including the magistrate. "Since the last time I seen you, I left the courtroom proud. I left the courtroom happy. "In my head, I had it worked out what I was

going to tell you." Four days earlier, he'd appeared at the same court on a family violence matter. He was set to face other criminal matters on 10 August, and on a Corrections-supervised bail program - meaning he needed to prove exceptional circumstances for his release. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green said police would oppose any future bail application, including for an unac-

ceptable risk of reoffending. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told the man that his chances of getting bail was "very low" because he'd reoffended while out on bail. "If you made an application for bail then I'd refuse it." The court made full intervention orders protecting both victims. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 July.

Basketball has always been a huge part of Kash Gaitely's life. Despite still being in his formative years, Mr Gaitely, 19, has a wealth of experience associated with his favourite sport. When he wasn't shooting hoops, the Pakenham Upper teen was watching the champions of the NBL clash on centre stage. But a turning point came at the age of 15, when Mr Gaitely conceded that he was lacking the fitness to keep up with the sport's major players. With the dream of being on-court for a NBL showdown still at the forefront of his mind, he decided to embark on a different trajectory. "I love refereeing - it's such a challenge," he said. He took his first step towards greatness last month, crowned as metropolitan Melbourne's best junior referee at a Basketball Victoria awards ceremony. For Mr Gaitely, who one day aspires to referee NBL matches and international competitions, it is a huge blessing. "It's taken a lot of effort and practice for me to get here, but it's a huge acknowledgement and I couldn't be happier," he said. "I've been doing it for four years because I discovered I wasn't fit enough to keep playing, but I wanted to be a part of it. For the 19-year-old, the role requires a great deal of dedication and commitment. He referees five nights a week, which also includes weekend work - but the sacrifice is worth it. Since winning the title, it has been business as usual for Mr Gaitely - who has continued refereeing games in Pakenham and the wider region. Described as tenacious and dedicated, his superior Warwick Loveless from the Victorian

Kash Gaitely with his award, received for high-standard refereeing. 182495 Basketball Referees Association said he has no doubt the 19-year-old will make it to the world stage.

"He's a dedicated, hardworking young fellow who works very hard to get where he is and won't stop until he makes it," he said.

Sorry isn’t good enough By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "duplicitous" man has been jailed for persistently breaching an intervention order despite being convicted several times in the past year. Recently, the 47-year-old breached a goodbehaviour bond and a community corrections order for the same types of crime, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 16 July. He had been previously convicted for breaching the same intervention order "hundreds" of times in August, December and February, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man was "respectful" and "polite" in court yet he continued to re-offend.

Mr Vandersteen told the man: "It's not a question of being sorry to me ... it's a question of being accountable on these orders. "You can't be duplicitous." The man produced "conflicting material" in his defence, such as wanting to reconcile with his family while he was in love with another woman. The accused lacked insight into his conduct, persistently re-offended and tried to reduce his moral culpability, Mr Vandersteen said. The man may have a "personality disorder" - leading to different personalities and outcomes depending on who he was dealing with,

the magistrate mused. "He's trying to manipulate himself out of this." As part of his defence, he penned a letter expressing what his lawyer described as his "sincere regret". He also submitted a mental health report, a letter from a Berwick business, his current partner and his step-daughter. His persistent text messages and calls to his ex-wife had been an "attempt to re-unite his family", the lawyer said. "He was thinking with his heart and not his head." The man apologised to the court, saying he

was "definitely remorseful" and pledged never to re-offend. "I'm just making excuses now. I understand what I did was wrong. "Last time I was angry and confused. I thought everyone was at fault except myself. "I'm the one who broke the law and broke the order." The man was convicted, fined $1000 and jailed for six months - including 27 days in pre-sentence detention. His jail term will be followed by a 12-month supervised community corrections order including mental health treatment and behavioural programs.

‘Non-violent’ man refused bail for girlfriend kill threats By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man accused of slapping his girlfriend's head and holding broken glass to her throat has told a court that "she's the abuser in the relationship". "I'm not a violent person in nature," he told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 16 July. "I'm not a violent person generally. I don't resort to violence." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen replied: "But your history is violence." During an argument at a Narre Warren South home on 15 July, she had taunted him about a rumour that he was sleeping with his sister, police told the court. The man allegedly grabbed her throat, pushed her on the bed and demanded "who told you that?". He slapped her head up to 20 times, and picked up a broken glass and put it to her throat, the victim claimed.

"You're lucky I didn't kill you," he allegedly told her. "I've never wanted to kill someone as much as I do now." At one point, the man was armed with a kitchen knife while the victim tried to hold shut a side door, police alleged. He grabbed her phone before she could reach triple-0. She fired off text messages to her niece, telling her that the man had struck her. "I want you to have evidence if something happens to me," she wrote. The niece contacted police, who later arrived and arrested the man. At the hearing, he consented to an interim full intervention order protecting the victim. However, his lawyer indicated he would later contest the order. Police opposed bail to the man, who was charged with recklessly causing injury and threatening to kill.

He had several pending and prior matters including multiple burglaries, criminal damage, assaults, failure to answer bail, a threat to kill and driving offences. "His history suggests he will continue to commit violence," nominal informant Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court. The man made partial admissions to police, but told the court that "she was the one with the knife, I had the piece of glass". He accused her of hitting him in the back of the head "all day". "She gets in front of you ... you're cowering because he is going to hit you." The man told the court that he'd been "kicking goals" since he had been out of prison. When asked for "compelling reasons" for his release, he said he hadn't offended for four years. He was earning good money while supervising seven co-workers. He denied his partner's statement that he'd smoked an ice pipe in the bedroom that day. It

was just a piece of a broken pipe, he said. A defence lawyer told the court that the man was a heavy smoker of cannabis, and used ice "from time to time". Magistrate Vandersteen ruled the man was unable to provide "compelling reasons" for being bailed. "By me kicking goals, how isn't it good enough?" the man replied. "What is classed as compelling?" Mr Vandersteen said: "By currently adjusting your attitude (to me) in the first place." "I'm just fighting for my rights, Your Honour," the man said. He said if his partner was a male, she'd be in custody and he'd be out free. He was just trying to defend himself, he said. "She's the abuser in the relationship ... she's used the weapons. "She's mentally unstable." The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 July.

Making waves in the pool By Brendan Rees A group of dedicated swimmers beat insomnia by making a big splash during a 24-hour fundraising marathon at Cranbourne East last weekend. Four teams and 64 swimmers hit the water for Casey Race's seventh MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 24-hour Mega Swim. Kiwanis Club of Berwick hosted this year's event with club secretary Norman McLennan saying he was overjoyed with the turnout with the event raising almost $10500. "We had a good time and it's always interesting during the early hours of the morning but the parents were their supporting their kids," he said. The event began at 12pm on Saturday 14 July to 12pm on Sunday 15 July. Teams of up to 15 people participated by swimming laps in relay over 24-hours. Each team was required to have a swimmer in the water at all times and could not use artificial aids. The overall winning team - Kings of the Pool - which had 14 participants aged from 12 to their early teens, swum 100 km and 800 metres. Mr McLennan said "They swam a considerable distance, it was a pretty good effort; they worked out the most efficient way to get it done." The event has become Australia's fastestgrowing fundraising events with over 30 taking place annually around the country. Dandenong Apex 40 group also a barbeque, raising $1167. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon and MS Ambassador Steven van Ruyven also attended, throwing their support behind the swimmers. Mr Lennan said "Every dollar counts" and hoped to hold a bigger event next year.

REACHING OUT TO HELP THOSE IN NEED THE TEAM at OBrien Real Estate doesn’t do things by halves. Last year the property group launched the OBrien Real Estate Foundation to help those in need in the communities in which they operate and already around $250,000 has been ploughed into worthwhile causes and projects. Of that, $110,000 has helped change the lives of people living with MND. Last year team members took on the Great Wall of China as a fundraising challenge and this year’s assignment is tackling the grueling Kokoda Track in late August. The foundation also raises funds by selling jackets to staff and events like golf days, ladies days, OBRE weekend community pop-ups, charity auctions and sausage sizzles. The OBrien Real Estate Foundation also receives $50 from every property sale made by the group. “The foundation will see all of us working together to improve the lives of people in our local communities and supporting causes like MND, Beyond Blue, local hospitals, meals on wheels, among others,” said Stavros Ambatzidis, OBrien Real Estate director and founder of the OBrien Real Estate Foundation. “Giving back is in our blood and our culture,” Mr Ambatzidis said. “We love seeing the positive impact our sponsorship has on our local community and we believe that giving back is extremely important. “Many of our O’Brien members can be seen cheering on at local sports clubs, community events or being involved in many

worthy cause or a need a leg-up, we would love to hear from them,” Mr Capuano said. “They are more than welcome to apply for a helping hand through the foundation. “We are all about supporting people in the local community who are struggling.” The foundation's logo represents a circle and a heart, aimed to indicate completeness and the fact that our lives are intertwined.

“Yes we’re real estate agents, yes we change lives but we haven’t cured cancer or invented penicillin,” Mr Ambatzidis. “This is a way where we can make a real difference.” Anyone with information about a genuine need or cause within the community is encouraged to contact Mr Capuano and his team at OBriens Pakenham. ●

AUCTION IN CLYDE NORTH HELPS TEAM DANIHER FIGHT MND BROWN PROPERTY Group and Henley have joined FightMND’s army to help tackle Motor Neurone Disease. MND is a rare neurological condition that progressively damages the motor neurones or ‘nerves’ in the brain and spinal cord causing the associated muscles to waste away. Former Essendon footballer Neale Daniher has spearheaded a phenomenally successful campaign to raise money for MND research. Daniher suffers from MND and knows the devastating effect the disease can have on sufferers, their family and friends. At present there is no known cure for MND. Brown Property Group has donated a block of land in its Meridian Estate at Clyde North. Henley, with the help of local tradies and suppliers, is building the home. The property will be auctioned, without a

reserve, next March. Mr Daniher visited the building site last week to thank those working on the project. He said the entire team at Fight MND was humbled by the support and generosity of everyone involved in the project. "It is very generous of them all. They are joining the MND army to help find a cure for MDN." Brown Property Group chief operating officer Ryan Pritchard said the company was committed to supporting the community. “We are incredibly proud to welcome the trades and suppliers on site and offer them our sincere thanks and appreciation, who will put their all in building a stunning home to help fight MND.” The home is Henley’s best-selling Emperor 38. The 38 square home features four bedrooms, including a hotel style master suite and three secondary bedrooms upstairs all with walk-in-wardrobes. ●

CLUB DELARAY DESIGNED TO BRING RESIDENTS TOGETHER WHEN VILLAWOOD launched its $5 million residents' club at Delaray in Clyde North last week the star of the show was 79-year old great grandmother Marlene Nealon. After 15 years in Berwick, Marlene, who has six sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, moved to Delaray in January. Marlene and her beloved dog Sooty featured in a promotional video shown to guests at the club opening. "I feel so comfortable here, it's the whole community feeling," Marlene said. "I take Sooty for a walk every morning. People are working in their gardens, you can stop and talk to them. "There is nothing I like more than taking Sooty and my great-grandchildren to the park. There are kids of all nationalities and everybody is playing. It's just beautiful." At an age when most people would be moving into a retirement village, Marlene said she wanted to live "where I had lots children around me". "I have five or six backyards which back onto mine. I sit out and listen to the chidren playing. It's wonderful."

Cutting the ribbon to open Club Delaray were, from left, Villawood assistant development manager Shannon Straughn, Villawood Properties CEO Phil Hanna, resident Marlene Nealon, Casey councillor Wayne Smith and Villawood senior development manager Nacy Bickerton. The residents' club was also one of the reasons Marlene was attracted to Delaray. The architecturally designed residents' club features two swimming pools, a fully-

equipped gym, function room and theatrette, library, parents' lounge, community garden, men's shed and tennis court. A cafe will open in the next few month, while a com.au

childcare centre is planned to be built on land next door. Villawood Properties CEO Phil Hanna said the clubhouse model was a way of promoting social inclusiveness and cohesion. He said the club was the "heart and lungs of the community". "By giving our residents more opportunities to connect, through structures such as Club Delaray, the more familiar they become with the people living around them and it fosters a sense of safety, a sense of shared ownership and ultimately a strong and genuine sense of community." Mr Hanna said Club Delaray represented a $5 million investment in the community. Villawood Properties doesn't make any profit on the facility and the club will become common property once it is completed. It will then be owned by the Owners Corporation. For her part, Marlene said she was looking forward to the cafe opening, borrowing books from the library and meeting even more of her neighbours. "I think I've got a new life in Delaray. I'm not moving from here. I'm happy." ● realestate.starcommunity.com.au

Bumper crowds for NAIDOC By Brendan Rees A record crowd turned out for this year's NAIDOC week celebrations in Cranbourne highlighting a growing interest for the City of Casey's Aboriginal culture. Crowds of more than 3000 people attended Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in Cranbourne on Wednesday 11 July which paid tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and communities. Families participated in a number of culturally focused activities including a free family barbeque, a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, historical and traditionally based storytelling weaving, craft, native plant and painting activities, bush-food and medicinal plant education walks, displays and tastings. An Indigenous Hip Hop Project dancer's workshop was also held as well as a didgeridoo performance by uncle Ron Murray. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for NAIDOC this year was 'Because of her, we can', and acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their important contribution to society. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria director and chief executive Tim Entwisle said NAIDOC week, which was run from 3-10 July celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. "The week, and often the whole of the month, is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community," he said.

For expert treatment Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities, so it's no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia's leading musculoskeletal podiatrists, foot and leg pain expert and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. "Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal po-

diatrist to assist," Dr Dowie said. "Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips." Dr Dowie explained that even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treatments including Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), prescription orthoses, stress and load management strategies. "Traditional treatments such as cortisone,

anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it's important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine," Dr Dowie said. "Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have treated some of the world's best athletes and thousands of people of all ages suffering foot and leg pain." To book in with Dr Dowie at the Foot and Leg Pain Clinic in Berwick, call 1300 328 300.

The skin cancer experts at Berwick and Officer Sun Patrol are warning that skin cancer can occur even in the depths of winter. Berwick Sun Patrol team member Dr Michael Inskip explained that no matter the time of year, it’s always important for people to book in for a skin cancer check. “There is no doubt that the higher your lifetime exposure to sun (recreational or occupational), the higher your lifetime risk of skin cancers,” Mr Inskip said. “This risk is further increased if you have a paler skin type or a family history of skin cancers.” Mr Inskip said there was also “a bit of a tendency to forget about skin cancers when it is not sunny.” “Skin cancers will appear all year around,” he said. “So please don’t wait till spring to have a check with a highly qualified doctor at either of our Sun Patrol clinics in Berwick or Officer.” For more information, phone 1300SUNPATROL or visit sunpatrolscc.com.au.

Since opening its new hospital in January this year, St John of God Berwick Hospital has welcomed more than 360 babies into its brand new, state of the art maternity facilities. This year the hospital launched its new parental education program, which included free paediatric first aid and sleep settling workshops for past patients and expectant parents. Music therapy was also added to the list of in-hospital services, along with the ability to book an on-site photographer to capture those special first few days. For patients who prefer to take their own photos, the hospital provides loan of a free photography kit. Rest and recovery is an important part of the St John of God Berwick Hospital birthing experience. The hospital understands how overwhelming and tiring those first few days can be and does everything it can to make the transition to parenthood just that little bit easier. During a patient’s stay at the hospital, they can take advantage of the Relax, Recover, Recharge Bath Experience, where mums can have their babies cared for by their midwife while they indulge in a peaceful and relaxing salt bath to help heal and cleanse the body. St John of God Berwick Hospital understands the demands that new parents go through during those first few days. Don’t worry, take action Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic is encouraging men to visit their GP or urologist when facing issues with the “nearest and dearest parts of their bodies". “As a urologist, I frequently deal with blokes worried about what may be normal or may be a significant problem,” Mr McCahy said. “The biggest worry for most men in this area is testicular cancer. Though rare, it is the commonest cancer in young men with most cancers presenting between 15-40 years. “Tumours appear as hard lumps which is why self-examination is a recommended. The good news is that early diagnosis results in almost complete cure, and even late presenting cancers can have very good results. “Lance Armstrong, before certain pharmacologically enhanced bike rides, was the poster boy for testicular cancer survival.” Mr McCahy explained that other lumps that can appear in the scrotum include epididymal cysts, hydrocoeles and varicoceles.

Boomerang bag project Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source. Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Why not get involved - join us on a weekly basis to make these sustainable bags that we can then donate on to local support organisations who would normally use plastic bags. It does not matter if you can or cannot sew. The program will be facilitated by an experienced teacher who will teach the art of sewing to those who want to learn. It is a great opportunity to come together and be part of how our community can change to manage this issue. Come along and join this fun group, learn new skills and make new friends. All materials will be supplied. We do have some sewing machines but if you have one please bring it along. tarting Tuesday 17 July for 10 weeks from 9.30am - 12.30pm at Balla Balla Community Centre, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne East.

The Australian Ballet presents Coppélia Ballet’s most charming comedy, live on stage: The Australian Ballet’s Regional Tour presents Coppélia. Swanilda and Franz are in love ... until a beautiful stranger, the daughter of the magician Dr Coppelius, appears in town. But she is not what she seems, and Swanilda must rescue Franz from the magician’s sinister workshop – with the help of some fancy footwork! This sparkling tale of magic and mischief, with its irresistible melodies and ‘living dolls’, is amusing fun for the whole family. Inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s stories, Coppélia features exquisite costumes by master designer Kristian Fredrikson. Laughter and love, lively dancing and vivid colour – treat the family to Coppélia. Floorball fever takes hold By Hayley Wildes In four action-packed days at Cardinia Life last week, the 2018 Junior Australian Floorball Open (JAFO) Championships were held. Over 200 of the most talented kids from 16 teams across New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria competed in four mixed aged groups from under-11 to under-17s. The championships consisted of three days of round robin games, before a grand final and placings day on Saturday (14 July). All days were played in a terrific spirit and when it was all on the line in grand finals, teams didn’t take a backwards step and the level of play rose again. Pakenham was represented in all four agegroups and had three teams make grand finals - a terrific effort that showcases the level of talent in the Pakenham Squishees Floorball Club. “We like to think that we’ve got one of the best junior programs going around, not just in the state but nationally,” Gavin Staindl, president of the Pakenham Floorball Club said. “Having three teams make the grand finals is certainly a very good reflection of where we stand in the national scheme of things.” Pakenham faced off against the Western Exports in the under-13 grand final. In a tough encounter, Pakenham was unable to defend the fast-paced Western Exports team, falling 4-1 to claim silver. The under-15 grand final was again a battle between the Pakenham Squishees and Western Exports. The Western Exports claimed the title with a dominant 7-1 win. Pakenham took on the Newcastle Cobras in the under-17 grand final and it was a thrilling match-up. Both teams competed hard and after the Cobras jumped out to an

early 2-0 lead, the Squishees stormed back into the contest to level the scores at 2-2. Newcastle regained the lead with 10 minutes to play and kept Pakenham out in an intense final few minutes to claim the trophy, 3-2. In the under-11s tournament, Peninsula claimed the championship.

The fast-paced sport is thrilling to watch and exciting to participate in. Floorball is a mix between field hockey, ice hockey, soccer and basketball and with five players and a goalie per team, there is plenty of space to run and create during a game. The Pakenham Floorball Club has been in existence for 21 years and this was the first time the junior championships had been held

as a stand-alone event in Pakenham. The Victorian Floorball Association was proud to host the third ever JAFO at Pakenham. For those interested in giving floorball a go, the Pakenham Floorball Club hosts social games on Tuesday nights at Officer Secondary College from 7.45pm - no experience is necessary and all ages are welcome.

Six on the trot for Warriors Local clubs get behind bid By Hayley Wildes

By Nick Creely

The business end of the Big V basketball regular season has arrived. While all Warriors teams fought valiantly over the weekend, there was only one Pakenham side that came away with a win. The Division 2 men held a narrow two-point lead over the third-placed Camberwell Dragons on Sunday afternoon, but were unable to keep up in the second half, falling 82-74. The Warriors were outscored 13-22 in the third term and couldn't recover. Ben Gaze (18 points, 5 rebounds) led the way for Pakenham. The Warriors (9-10) sit eighth on the ladder. The Youth League 2 men claimed an important road win against Western Port on Sunday afternoon and extended their winning streak to six in a row. The Warriors led at every break, eventually winning 83-73. Ned Weideman followed up his incredible 44-point outing last week with an impressive 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Lee Belton (17 points) and Matt Berkec (10 points, 9 rebounds) were also important for the Warriors. The win sees Pakenham (15-6) sit third on the ladder. With just two wins separating first to fifth, the final two rounds of the regular season will be vital for all involved. The second-placed Youth League 2 women had a blockbuster clash with the third-placed Frankston Blues and it's fair to say the game went right down to the wire. In an intense back and forth battle, the Warriors trailed by one-point at the final break and took the lead when Sarah Thomson (12 points, 8 rebounds) drained a jump shot with just over one minute to play. The Blues regained the lead with some clutch free throws, before Thomson again hit a jumper to tie the scores with 14 seconds remaining. Frankston's Kirra Gadsby regained the lead for the Blues with a tough basket and Pakenham's Sam Neil (16 points, 5 rebounds) missed a potential game-winning triple at the buzzer. Frankston prevailed 58-56. Ellie Coutts was superb for Pakenham, hitting 3-3 from beyond the arc on her way to 14 rebounds, 9 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.

The bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria has received the overwhelming backing of many local Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong clubs. In total, 43 clubs from all different regions in the south-east have provided Letters of Support to Team 11's bid, which was conveyed to Football Federation Australia and Deloitte as part of the bid team's Expression of Interest submission. Of the 43 clubs, 21 of those fall within the local region of Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong, with larger clubs such as Berwick City, Dandenong Thunder and Pakenham United all getting behind the bid. Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley said the bid would work with these clubs - and as many others as possible in south-east Victoria - in the coming months to establish what a formal working relationship would look like if and when the A-League push is successful. "This club will be nothing without the backing of the local football community," Windley said. "The support received thus far has been incredible and we can't thank enough the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run these clubs to help Team 11's bid. "We would love to have working relationships with all clubs in the south-east of Victoria. "This is a club that has to be of benefit to its local football community. It goes beyond simply playing A-League and W-League matches locally, it has to be a genuine positive presence in the community and provide a genuine professional pathway for our young boys and girls. "These Letters of Support are an indication from our community that we are building this bid in the right way thus far." The clubs that have provided letters of support so far are: Afghan Victory, Aspendale, Berwick Churches, Berwick City, Bunyip and District Strikers, Casey Comets, Casey Panthers, Chelsea, Dandenong City, Dandenong South, Dandenong Thunder, Doveton, Endeavour Hills Fire, Endeavour Sporting Club, Endeavour United, Gippsland FC, Hampton Park

Round 17 sees the Division 2 men face off against the top of the table Coburg Giants at Cardinia Life from 4pm on Sunday and the Youth League 2 Women hit the road to take on Western Port on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 men have a season-defining weekend ahead. On Saturday night the Warriors head to Mornington to take on the sixth-placed Breakers, before returning home on Sunday to battle it out against the second-placed Collingwood All Stars from 2pm.

Pakenham United president Lisa Forster said that bringing an A-League side into the region will benefit everyone. "It'll benefit all of us in the south-east by having a stadium in Dandenong and the training base in Casey," she said. "It will give all of our kids in the region the opportunity to have a go because those facilities are in their community. "It doesn't matter where they are, so long as they're in the south-east, we're all getting access to the professional game like we never have before." pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Oliver’s purple purpose By Nick Creely Officer Junior Football Club youngster Oliver Bailey is inspired by the story of bravery and resilience of Maddie Riewoldt. An active volunteer for three years of 'Maddie Riewoldt's Vision', an organisation created to fund medical research about Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes (BMFS), Oliver is taking matters into his own hands only days after one of the most important days on the AFL calender. This Friday 20 July at Etihad Stadium, Richmond and St Kilda will battle it out at Etihad Stadium for 'Maddie's Match', a now annual event aimed at raising funds and providing support to families who are suffering from these syndromes. Irrespective of where the two sides sit on the AFL ladder, it's a night for the football world to come together for a greater cause than just the four points on offer. Maddie - the sister of Saints legend Nick Riewoldt and the cousin of Tigers champion Jack Riewoldt -passed away on 24 February, 2015, after a five year battle with Aplastic Anaemia. Unable to make it on what is a special night, Oliver - a young man with a mature head on his shoulders - has arranged for his own 'Maddie's Match' to take place on Sunday 22 July, with his Officer Under 9 Black team to take on Fountain Gate at Heatherbrae Reserve at 10am, all with the aim of raising much needed funds. Oliver said he's taken a keen interest ever since finding out about Maddie's story, and felt like he needed to do something to help the cause. "My dad came up with the idea when he told me what had happened to Maddie," Oliver said. "When I heard that she had Bone Marrow Failure, I thought that I should raise money for it, so when somebody else gets it, they can

"I came up with idea because we couldn't go to the match this year (between Richmond and St Kilda), because Mum and Dad are working and I've got to go to footy training, so I thought we could do a fundraiser where we all wear purple shoelaces. FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER WRAP - ROUND 15 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST Casey Comets suffered a tough loss against Richmond SC on Saturday afternoon at Comets Stadium, 6-0. The struggling Comets found themselves 4-0 down at half time, and despite putting on a more competitive showing in the second half, conceded a further two goals in the second half. Juan Gallego Vera was the star for Richmond, scoring a triple, while Evangelos Skraparas scored a brace. Warragul United, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Malvern City at Baxter Park, while South Springvale also suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Beaumaris SC at Warner Reserve. United are in some strong form heading into the latter stages of the season, and sit fourth on the table with a 7-5 record, and have the third best defence in the league. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Doveton SC relinquished top spot on the State League 2 ladder after a 0-0 draw against Brandon Park at Waratah Reserve, and has now slipped to second as a result of Knox City’s 5-0 win over Peninsula Strikers. The Doves will face Doncaster Rovers on Saturday as they look to get back to the top.

Berwick City, meanwhile, suffered a 2-1 loss to Mazenod Victory, and are now sitting in fourth and four points away from the top. City couldn’t quite get the games on their own terms in the entertaining match, with Victory holding an edge despite a goal to Jonathan Ichim in the 63rd minute. The race for the top spots are still well and truly alive, with City and Doveton both in the four, while Knox City, Brandon Park and Mazenod Victory continue to be strong sides. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Aspendale SC proved a class above in a brilliant opening half display against Pakenham United at Jack Grut Reserve, 3-0. The Stingrays scored three first half goals to take in a major lead, and managed to hold onto that lead in the second half. There was two red-cards in the match, with Garry Mousaco (Pakenham) and Dylan Langford-Povey (Aspendale) sent off late in the game. Casey Panthers, meanwhile, suffered a 3-1 loss to Old Mentonians at Prospect Hill, with the Panthers proving a handful in attack. In other games across the round, Drouin lost 3-0 to Endeavour Hills Fire at Bellbird Park, Chelsea FC defeated Lyndale United 2-0, White Star Dandenong scored a mammoth 7-0 win over Bunyip, while Rowville won 5-0 over Knox United at Park Ridge. Somerville Eagles had the bye.

Storm’s free for all clinic The Gippsland Storm Elite Development Netball Club ran a free junior development clinic at the Cardinia Life stadium in Pakenham during the school holidays. The clinic was open to all juniors in the Gippsland region and there was a wide demographic in attendance, with ages ranging from nine to 15. There were netballers from Pakenham, Drouin, Warragul, Moe, Morwell, Nyora and Lang Lang. A total of 68 juniors attended, participating in six different activities which included shooting, defending, intercepting, balancing and game play. Storm coaches and current players put the

junior netballers through their paces, with some of the juniors invited to the Storm tryouts in October. The morning session went very smoothly. Storm president Roger Palmer was thrilled with the outcome and hopes to continue running these sorts of clinics in future school holiday breaks. Palmer also stated that it was a great way for Gippsland Storm to give back to the Gippsland community for its support over many years. The session concluded with stretching and a warm down from Your Body Hub, with Gippsland Dairy - supporters of the clinic - supplying yoghurt as a giveaway at the end of the session.
