Kids up to song and dance By Brendan Rees

More than 50 toddlers got their groove on during a dance session held at Cranbourne Library on Friday 6 July. "We had a packed house," said Faith Cadman of Casey Cardinia Libraries. The toddler music and dance session was one of Casey Cardinia Libraries free school holiday programs. Children twirled colourful scarves through the air while classical music played in the background, followed by singalongs of old favourites such as 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' and 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'. "We then played an exciting game of musical statues before handing out basic instruments such as bells, maracas and tambourines for some music-making fun," said Ms Cadman. "Finally, we played some up-beat songs
Cousins Elasu and Eliza. 182583 for the last dances of the session as the children were entranced with bubble wands." More on school holiday activities at the Cranbourne library website.
Teen thug attack A mother has told of how her teenage son has been left "scared half to death" following a terrifying daylight robbery in Hampton Park on Wednesday 11 July. The 17-year-old was walking home from gym along Fordham Road when a group of young thugs allegedly approached him at 2.20pm. One of the youths threatened the victim with unknown weapon and demanded that he hand over his mobile phone, police say. "Before handing over his phone, the offender struck the victim to the leg with the unknown weapon," said police spokeswoman Creina O'Grady. The victim handed over his phone and a small amount of cash before the group fled towards Hampton Park Shopping Centre.
Police patrolled the area but were unable to track down the culprits. The victim didn't suffer any injuries. "He said as soon as he saw them he knew what was going to happen and there was no escape," said the teen's mother, who wished to remain anonymous. She said her son was an "easy target" and was in the "wrong place, wrong time." "They're mostly a pack of gutless a*******s and they always go in groups because they're more intimidating. "There were five or six of them and they've punched him - it's any wonder why he's scared half to death," she said. "He's extremely shaken up, very flat and had a terrible night's sleep. "I've never had anything like this happen, you hardly ever hear of it in Hampton Park."
Adding to the frustration was the fact that she would still have to pay off her son's stolen phone which is under contract with Vodafone and also not insured. "I will still have to pay for his phone even though it's been stolen and unlikely to see it again. "They couldn't care less even though he's been severely traumatised they can't do anything," she said. She said had little faith in the justice system even if those responsible are caught. "The magistrate lets them off. The message they're told is 'Do whatever the hell you like because nothing's going to happen.'" "I really think something serious needs to be done from a legislative point to stop all of this happening. The government needs to get serious about it."
FACTORY DIRECT BLINDS FOR LESS
The youths were described as African in appearance, wearing dark hooded-tops that were possibly black or dark green. They wore their tops' zippers up to partially cover their faces, police said. Casey CIU detectives are investigating the robbery. Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said she was shocked by the incident, saying "Daniel Andrews' government is incapable of governing on law and order matters with any clarity or strength." She said the Liberal focus would be to crack down on crime. "We'll bring in reforms that ban concurrent sentences for eleven serious crimes to keep the criminals off our streets, and out of our homes, cars and businesses." Train headaches in works By Brendan Rees Commuters will face days of train pain with disruptions hitting the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Dandenong lines as platforms are extended next month to cater for new high-capacity metro trains. As part of an 11-day August construction blitz, buses will replace trains between Saturday 4 August and Monday 14 August on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines past Dandenong as part of the construction blitz. Replacement buses will run between Dandenong and Cranbourne from 4-5 August, between Dandenong and Pakenham from 4-12 August, then between Westall, Cranbourne and Pakenham on 13 and 14 August. During this time, there will be express bus services between Westall and Cranbourne and Pakenham, and additional services that will stop at all stations. Acting Minister for Public Transport Luke Donnellan said the upgrades were urgently needed to keep up with demand on Melbourne's busiest train lines. "We ask passengers to bear with us through these disruptions as we work towards creating
Buses will replace trains on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines next month. 182808 Picture: GARY SISSONS the train service that Victorians expect." "Unless we act now, the system will eventually run itself into the ground," he said. Works will include building longer platforms and replace ageing rail infrastructure to improve train reliability. Opposition Public Transport Minister David
Davis said the biggest question was "Why on earth didn't they do some of this upgrade work while they had the line out of action with the sky rail construction?" "Why couldn't they do both of them at once instead of inconveniencing people twice," he said.
"There's already been month and months of disruption. Everyone understands the various upgrade works need to occur but surely you'd think they could coordinate those works with the earlier works." Mr Davis said there had been a "pretty big deterioration" with punctuality services on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines. "Daniel Andrews has got to explain why he can't run the railways." Public Transport User's Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said upgrading the rail system was vital to cope with population growth. However he said it was a shame that the works would cause a disruption. "Hopefully authorities are doing everything they can to minimise the impact. It's critical that they provide enough buses and staff to help things run smoothly. They should also be looking at bus priority measures wherever possible to help packed buses avoid getting stuck in traffic," Mr Bowen said. The high-capacity Metro train are expected to carry up to 20 per cent more passengers while providing a more "spacious, comfortable ride."
Making the most of life By Brendan Rees Richard Mittra counts himself lucky. It was only seven months ago that he survived a horrific motorbike accident. But today he's back doing what he loves most - dancing. The 73-year-old recalled hopping on his 250cc scooter at his home in Berwick and began heading towards Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links in Upper Beaconsfield to play golf on the 31 November last year. Mr Mittra had barely driven 500 metres along Inglis Road when he approached the intersection of Inglis Road and BeaconsfieldEmerald Road near Cardinia Park Hotel. It was at this point that his life was about to change. "I lost traction because and I left the road and I ended I ended up in a culvert," he said. "The bike flipped over and hit me and pushed me against a tree stump. As a consequence, I broke five ribs, fractured my right hand, dislocated my left hand, damaged both my knees, punctured my left lung, and crushed
my left kidney. "I was in so much pain, I couldn't breathe. I didn't know at the time with my lungs that were punctured that that was the problem," he said. According to Mr Mittra, on the day of the accident he saw a couple of workers spraying weeds on the side of the road and chemical residue spreading to the road. He was taken to Casey Hospital where he spent four days in intensive care and nine days in trauma. Today, Mr Mittra has returned to his passion in ballroom and Latin dancing. "I hadn't dance for a long, long time," he says. "I reached quite a good level because I had a very good teacher," he said, adding he had taken up dancing at the age of 55. Mr Mittra said only a few weeks ago he had seen an advertisement in the Berwick Star News for dance lessons at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne. "Not only is it a great recreation, it's a great

Sex offender accused of grooming teen online By Cam Lucadou-Wells
he allegedly wrote. In April this year, Kelly communicated with the girl on his mobile phone, the court heard. "Hey, it's Richard", he said before allegedly directing her to "now delete our conversation on Facebook". That night, he encouraged her to send an explicit image, leading to a charge of penetrating a child under 16, the court heard. After the girl broke off contact, Kelly allegedly contacted her with another Facebook pseudonym account.
Kelly used the profile picture of a 15-year-old boy on the account, with the girl unaware of the 'boy's' true identity, Det Sen Const Matthews said. During the recent bail hearing, he had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' due to the serious charge and being on a community corrections order at the time. Magistrate Pauline Spencer ruled Kelly failed to produce "special, different or out-of-the-ordinary" evidence to justify bail. He was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 13 July.

A registered-for-life sex offender has been refused bail on allegations of persuading a 15-year-old girl to perform a sexual act on Facebook. Richard Kelly, 34, appeared at Dandenong Magistrates' Court after police raided and seized electronic devices from his room at a Cranbourne boarding house on 9 July. He was accused of grooming the girl for about a year through a Facebook pseudonym account, informant Detective Senior Constable
David Matthews told the court the same day. She had allegedly told him she was 14 on the first occasion they spoke in April 2017. Over the following months, Kelly allegedly asked if she liked cuddles and requested a photo of her. He responded: "Wow you're very cute", the court was told. She was asked if she smoked or did drugs like "meth", where she lived and if she wanted to do a video call, the court heard. "Can I have another picture of you, babe?"

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Locky Ellis, Cranbourne South resident and aspiring photographer
What or who got you interested in photography? My Aunty Terry used to always take photos of animals and nature and through her I got my love for taking photos, she even got one of her photos into the National Geographic. What was your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment would be when I was in Grade 5 I went on a family holiday to Exmouth and I went swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo Reef. It was so amazing to be so close to the massive creatures as they peacefully swam by me. What are you going to do on the school holidays? Over the school holidays I plan on hanging out with my friends, reading a few books that I got for Christmas, going to see some new movies out in the cinema, especially the Incredibles 2 and having some rest time considering we just finished exams at school. My family also plans on going to the Werribee Zoo for a night time tour which I am excited for because I love animals. What is your favorite movie? As a kid my all-time favourite movie was Arthur and the Invisibles Trilogy, I loved it because it mixed real life with fantasy and it had a great characters. Footy team you support and why? I support Essendon Football Club and I have barracked for that team since I was born because that's the team my dad goes for and a family friend brought me a membership the year I was born. So I didn't get much of a choice in the matter. At school I...... At school I love doing the production each year. This year's was Fame. I love doing it because all of the people are so nice and friendly. I also enjoy my math subjects and hanging out with friends.
Favorirte holiday spot in Australia? My favorite holiday place in Australia to go is definitely Rottnest island, it has the most amazing views and awesome beaches to sun bake and lagoons to go snorkeling in. As well as that the island is filled with adorable little quokka's that, if you're lucky, let you hand feed them and pat them. Which 6 dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? The six people I would invite to dinner would be: My Aunty Terry who passed away late last year so I could see her again. David Attenborough because I have loved watching his shows throughout my whole childhood. Steve Irwin because I share his love for animals and I have always wanted to meet him. I feel like everyone would say this but I think meeting the Queen would be an amazing experience so I would
also invite the Queen. The next person I would invite would be Lin Manuel Miranda, the man who played Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton because he is amazing at what he does and is love to meet him. The last person I would invite would be Tom Holland, the guy who plays Spider-Man in the marvel movies. He seems like a really nice person and I would love to meet him. What's your favorite book? My favorite book would have to be The Giver because it explores a futuristic way of life and I find it very interesting to read and analyse. Which band or singer would you most like to see live? If I could see anyone live in concert I would definitely see Shawn Mendes because I love his music.
THREE … ways to save your skin this winter
1
Apply your moisturiser immediately after your shower, and by immediately after I mean within the first two minutes of turning the tap off. This is when the skin can soak up the most hydration from using a moisturiser and also the layer the moisturiser puts on the skin will stop extra water loss at the skin's surface.
2
Stop using soap. Soap has ingredients which dry the skin and strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Pharmacies and health food stores carry many options for soap alternatives which often have moisturising and nourishing natural ingredients to work with your skin and keep it healthy.
3
At night choose to use a thicker or heavier moisturiser, especially on your legs and hands which can really suffer through winter. A heavier moisturiser or ointment stays on the skin for longer, preventing water loss and strengthening the skin's natural barrier.

Former Essendon footballer Neale Daniher has spearheaded a phenomenally successful campaign to raise money for MND research. Daniher suffers from MND and knows the devastating effect the disease can have on sufferers, their family and friends. At present there is no known cure for MND. of land in its Meridian Estate at Clyde North. Henley, with the help of local tradies and suppliers, is building the home. The property will be auctioned, without a reserve, next March. Mr Daniher visited the building site last week to thank those working on the project. To clarify, the Officer community aren’t objective to the Station Street Hotel project, we are strongly objecting to the 80 poker machines the applicants want to install. Cardinia Council voted unanimously to reject the application along with Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) to denied them a licence for 80 gambling machines. Now the applicants Mr Rice and McDonald are appealing to VCAT to overturn the will of the Officer Community, and the decisions of Cardinia Shire Council and VCGLR. Mr Rice and McDonald build your hotel, but it’s very clear by the decision handed down is that Officer doesn’t want or need more poker machines. Andrew McNabb, Officer

Kicking goals for good sports Casey Council has launched a new program aimed at inspiring, encouraging and breaking down barriers to get more women and girls involved in sport and physical activity. Council kicked off the We Are We Can We Will program at Casey Stadium recently, featuring an inspirational presentation from Olympic freestyle swim champion Elka Whalan Graham and a group fitness activity delivered by former Melbourne Vixens netballer, Ashlee Howard. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. "Through this campaign, council aims to empower and support more women and girls to get active and get involved in sport and recreation opportunities in the local community," he said. "While it's widely known that being active is important for our physical and mental health, research shows that females of all ages generally have lower physical activity participation rates than males, female participation through sporting or recreational clubs is lower and women and girls generally experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active. "As we roll-out this program initially over the next 12 months, Council hopes to inspire, boost confidence, reduce stigma and stereotypes and address barriers to participation to support more women and girls to get active." Through We Are We Can We Will, Council will be: Sharing the stories of local campaign ambassadors who are involved in sport and active recreation in a range of ways. Promoting a variety of local sport and recreation opportunities that exist across Casey. Providing learning and development opportunities that increase the skills of women and girls enabling greater involvement across all aspects of the sector. Hosting a summit that will bring together women and girls from across Casey to take part in workshops, roundtables, practical sessions and panel sessions.

Speed back to 100km/h A new hard waste contract will see more items recycled in the City of Casey.
Council collects new contract Casey Council has taken "a huge step forward" that will see more hard waste items recycled. In what is set to be "a massive reduction in materials going to landfill," Casey Council will be the first council to roll out a fleet of new electronic compactor trucks in collecting hard waste by January 2019. It comes as Casey Council signed a new contract with WM Waste Management this week - which will start in august - and see only five per cent of Casey's hard waste now being sent to landfill. Casey Council will aim to recycle 30 per cent of materials compared to a previous rate of around 10 per cent, while an additional 65 per cent will be turned into processed engineered fuel. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said this is a huge step forward for Council and the movement away from landfill will revolutionise the way Council manages its waste.
"This move will achieve huge environmental outcomes for the City of Casey," he said. "The processed engineered fuel made from hard waste materials will be used in cement kilns as a replacement for fossil fuels, which is a fantastic outcome. The City of Casey will also look at alternatives to landfill by exploring higher technology as part of its regular kerbside bin collections. Casey residents can book up to two hard rubbish collections per property each year and should contact Council to arrange a time. Items collected include materials such as mattresses and bases, car tyres, electrical appliances and furniture. Council urges residents to report illegally dumped rubbish, including items dumped on your existing hard waste pile. To contact Council phone 9705 5200 or visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/ waste for more information.
Drivers in the south east are expected to enjoy faster, safer and more journeys on Melbourne's busiest freeway, with work now complete on the State Government's Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 1. With work complete the speed limit has been returned to 100 km/h, with drivers already seeing travel time savings of more than seven minutes at peak times. Acting Premier James Merlino joined Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan on Sunday 15 July to thank workers, who've helped deliver the massive project on time and under budget. "This massive project has been delivered on time, under budget and is already delivering faster, more reliable journeys for hundreds of thousands of Victorians every day - this is a government that gets things done," Mr Merlino said. Mr Donnellan said the freeway was a "lifeline" to the south east, especially the growing communities in Casey and Cardinia - "that's why we're getting on and delivering the extra lanes we need to keep the Monash moving." New lanes have opened between EastLink and Clyde Road in early May two months ahead of schedule, making room on the freeway for an extra 2,000 vehicles per hour. The Australian and Victorian Governments have invested $1 billion to upgrade the Monash Freeway. Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said he has long campaigned to make the upgrade a reality. He said the project included the upgrade of the Beaconsfield Interchange and the extension of O'Shea Road in Berwick.
Acting Premier James Merlino joined Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan and Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards at the announcement. "The freeway will be widened between Warrigal Road and Eastlink and between Clyde Road and Cardinia Road, cutting an estimated nine minutes off a peak-hour trip between Pakenham and the city," Mr Wood said. More than 1.5 million working hours, 74 huge steel gantries, 200,000 tonnes of asphalt and more than 2,000 permanent concrete barriers have contributed to Stage 1 of the project. Eight bridges have been widened to carry new lanes, which have been added in the centre of the road. Electronic signage above the freeway, including lane use signs and electronic speed limits were switched on in early June, which marked the return of the freeway to 100km/h. This technology allows the remote management of lanes, keeping traffic moving more efficiently, as well as faster responses to incidents. Nine new freeway ramp signals are also now operating managing the number of cars entering the freeway helping traffic flow better and reducing stop-start driving.

Making waves in the pool By Brendan Rees A group of dedicated swimmers beat insomnia by making a big splash during a 24-hour fundraising marathon at Cranbourne East last weekend. Four teams and 64 swimmers hit the water for Casey Race's seventh MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 24-hour Mega Swim. Kiwanis Club of Berwick hosted this year's event with club secretary Norman McLennan saying he was overjoyed with the turnout with the event raising almost $10500. "We had a good time and it's always interesting during the early hours of the morning but the parents were their supporting their kids," he said. The event began at 12pm on Saturday 14 July to 12pm on Sunday 15 July. Teams of up to 15 people participated by swimming laps in relay over 24-hours. Each team was required to have a swimmer in the water at all times and could not use artificial aids. The overall winning team - Kings of the Pool - which had 14 participants aged from 12 to their early teens, swum 100 km and 800 metres. Mr McLennan said "They swam a considerable distance, it was a pretty good effort; they worked out the most efficient way to get it done." The event has become Australia's fastestgrowing fundraising events with over 30 taking place annually around the country. Dandenong Apex 40 group also a barbeque, raising $1167. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon and MS Ambassador Steven van Ruyven also attended, throwing their support behind the swimmers. Mr Lennan said "Every dollar counts" and hoped to hold a bigger event next year.

Rail support By Brendan Rees An advocacy group for Casey Council has thrown its support behind the State Opposition's biggest announcement to extend the Cranbourne rail line Clyde if it wins government. South East Melbourne (SES) - a group of councils, business and community leaders that advocate for jobs, sustainability and liveability in Melbourne's south east region - says rail transport must be made available as a "big proportion" of south east residents lived a long way from public transport. SEM Chair Simon McKeon said: "Because residents are forced to drive, congestion is worsening — driving down productivity and reducing liveability. To solve these issues, rail transport must be made available." "Extending the Cranbourne line will reduce congestion and attract new residents and business to the region," he said. In Clyde, more than 80 per cent of households maintain two or more vehicles - significantly higher than the metropolitan Melbourne average of 55 per cent - with onein-five households requiring four or more vehicles, Australian Bureau of Statistics data from the 2016 census shows. Mr McKeon said the extension of the Cranbourne line could, if necessary, be delivered in stages, allowing for spending to be spread over several budgets and fitting into existing infrastructure investments. Rail-line duplications, extensions and stabling could be delivered independently of each other, so work can be completed gradu-
Opoosition leader Matthew Guy and Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans announce the rail extension to Clyde. 182808 Picture: GARY SISSONS ally to ensure residents aren't waiting for the project to begin, Mr Mckeon said. Casey Resident and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) president Arvo Talvik said CRRA supported the announcement. "It's a very encouraging sign, the only thing I question is the amount of time to get it ready," he said. "I know what they've got to do, they've got lay five kilometres of track, they've got to do signals and you've got to build two stations and two car parks. If I was a planning project manager I can't see why all those three things can't be happening at once."
Casey thrilled by Libs pledge Casey council has warmly welcomed a State Opposition pledge to 'Commit to Casey', promising to extend the Cranbourne Rail line to Clyde. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy visited Cranbourne Railway Station on Wednesday 11 July for the announcement, saying a Liberal Nationals Government would build five kilometres of electrified double line from Cranbourne to Cranbourne East and terminating at Clyde at a cost of $487 million - if they win government at the November election. Construction would start in 2019 and new stations would be built at Cranbourne East and Clyde along with 350 additional parking spaces. "We're overjoyed Council's 'Commit to Casey' community advocacy campaign has been successful in securing Opposition support," Cr Ablett said. "This half a billion-dollar commitment makes our 'Commit to Casey' campaign the most successful by any local government and will help us achieve our goal of creating Australia's most liveable city." Cr Ablett thanked the community and his fellow Councillors for sending a strong message to both political parties which could not be ignored. "Thousands of Casey residents have sent emails to local politicians and candidates, put up yard signs and mailed postcards demanding both sides of politics 'Commit to Casey', fix our roads and extend Cranbourne Rail." Cr Ablett said with the announcement, the Opposition had effectively laid down the challenge to the Premier. "The campaign isn't over yet and we won't rest until Premier Daniel An-

Council launched the 'Commit to Casey' campaign in January creating a groundswell of community support to convince both sides of politics to invest up to $2.7 billion in road and rail infrastructure. Cr Ablett said successive governments had failed to build the transport infrastructure Casey's fast-growing communities desperately need. The 'Commit to Casey' campaign is seeking six key road projects and the duplication of the Cranbourne Railway line from Dandenong to Cranbourne and extension of the line to Clyde in the next term of government. In the May State Budget, the Andrews' Government announced funding for one of the road projects - the duplication of Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road between Thompson's Road and the South Gippsland Highway.

Survey opens to help shape approach to parking By Brendan Rees Casey residents can have their say on parking issues following the launch of a council survey. The online questionnaire will be used to help the council form its parking strategy. It will gauge residents' opinion of "where they feel current parking is not serving their needs." It also asks residents if they support the use of parking technology including sensors and electronic signage. The draft Parking Strategy will provide direction on how council oversees its parking
supply and how technology such as the arrival of autonomous vehicles and ride share programs will impact on the demand for parking resources. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the draft parking strategy would help shape the future of parking management within the municipality. He said Casey had one of the highest rates of car ownership within metropolitan Melbourne with almost 65 per cent of Casey households owning two or more cars. "Our estimated resident vehicle fleet will reach 216,000 by 2026," he said.
"With the Casey population expected to reach over 500,000 by 2041, a shift in the way we think about and plan for parking is required to ensure we can provide a more equitable and liveable City for our residents. "The draft Parking Strategy outlines considerations for the future of parking management and includes mechanisms that aim to manage parking more efficiently and provide optimal parking supply," Cr Ablett said. Narre Warren Business Group spokesman Dale Munckton said its members appreciated council recognising the on-going parking issues effecting businesses in the Verdun/Victor
Crescent and Webb Street precincts. "We look forward to working closely with council to ensure adequate parking is available for our members and businesses within the area. We encourage businesses to provide their feedback to Casey Council online," he said. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the draft parking strategy mentioned in several places about introducing 'paid parking' and questioned whether this was "A disguise for revenue raising." "This document does not detail how the strategy will become council policy or be implemented," he said.

Don’t worry, take action Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic is encouraging men to visit their GP or urologist when facing issues with the “nearest and dearest parts of their bodies". “As a urologist, I frequently deal with blokes worried about what may be normal or may be a significant problem,” Mr McCahy said. “The biggest worry for most men in this area is testicular cancer. Though rare, it is the commonest cancer in young men with most cancers presenting between 15-40 years. “Tumours appear as hard lumps which is why self-examination is a recommended. The good news is that early diagnosis results in almost complete cure, and even late presenting cancers can have very good results. “Lance Armstrong, before certain pharmacologically enhanced bike rides, was the poster boy for testicular cancer survival.” Mr McCahy explained that other lumps that can appear in the scrotum include epididymal cysts, hydrocoeles and varicoceles. “Most chaps will get very small cysts in the epididymis (the very tightly coiled tube behind the testicle that carries sperm towards the vas deferens) and nothing needs to be done. When these cysts become bigger than the testicle itself it is worth considering seeing a urologist. “Hydrocoeles are sacs of fluid surrounding the testicle and small collections are com-

Varicoceles are varicose veins that surround the (mostly left) testicle and are very common. There are various ways of repairing them if they become unsightly or painful. “If there are any concerns with the scrotum it is important to see your GP and urologists are happy to provide advice and chat about treatment options. Don’t be scared.” Philip McCahy is also a consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. For more information, visit seurology.simpl.com.

WHAT’S ON Casey Choir - Sing into Spring Concert
The Australian Ballet presents Coppélia
We will entertain you with a mix of songs, from Abba to Mozart and everything in-between. Guest Artist Shu-Cheen Yu is a multi-award winning international soprano with more than 12 major national and international singing awards. Ballet’s most charming comedy, live on stage: The Australian Ballet’s Regional Tour presents Coppélia. Swanilda and Franz are in love ... until a beautiful stranger, the daughter of the magician Dr Coppelius, appears in town. But she is not what she seems, and Swanilda must rescue Franz from the magician’s sinister workshop – with the help of some fancy footwork! This sparkling tale of magic and mischief, with its irresistible melodies and ‘living dolls’, is amusing fun for the whole family. Inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s stories, Coppélia features exquisite costumes by master designer Kristian Fredrikson. Laughter and love, lively dancing and vivid colour – treat the family to Coppélia. Saturday 21 July from 1.30 pm - 3.30pm at 2 Patrick Northeast Drive, Narre Warren. Cost Adult $65, Concession $55, Youth (Ages 17 to 24) $39, Child (Under 17) $29. Boomerang bag project Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source. Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Why not get involved - join us on a weekly basis to make these sustainable bags that we can then donate on to local support organisations who would normally use plastic bags. It does not matter if you can or cannot sew. The program will be facilitated by an experienced teacher who will teach the art of sewing to those who want to learn. It is a great opportunity to come together and be part of how our community can change to manage this issue. Come along and join this fun group, learn new skills and make new friends. All materials will be supplied. We do have some sewing machines but if you have one please bring it along. Starting Tuesday 17 July for 10 weeks from 9.30am - 12.30pm at Balla Balla Community Centre, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne East.

Bumper crowds for NAIDOC By Brendan Rees A record crowd turned out for this year's NAIDOC week celebrations in Cranbourne highlighting a growing interest for the City of Casey's Aboriginal culture. Crowds of more than 3000 people attended Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in Cranbourne on Wednesday 11 July which paid tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and communities. Families participated in a number of culturally focused activities including a free family barbeque, a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, historical and traditionally based storytelling weaving, craft, native plant and painting activities, bush-food and medicinal plant education walks, displays and tastings. An Indigenous Hip Hop Project dancer's workshop was also held as well as a didgeridoo performance by uncle Ron Murray. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for NAIDOC this year was 'Because of her, we can', and acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their important contribution to society. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria director and chief executive Tim Entwisle said NAIDOC week, which was run from 3-10 July celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. "The week, and often the whole of the month, is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community," he said.

SPORT
Bailey’s rise continues By Hayley Wildes Berwick 15-year-old Bailey Jankovic has never been one to back down from a challenge and his rapid rise up the wheelchair basketball ranks is a product of his hard work and tremendous attitude. Bailey's meteoric rise continues as he has been recognised as one of three finalists in the Marg Angel Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the upcoming Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards. The awards night, held on 1 August at Southbank, acknowledges athletes, volunteers, clubs, communities, venues and programs that enable and empower people with disability to get active and achieve their goals. To say Bailey is achieving his goals would be an understatement. His recent achievements include winning gold at the prestigious Basketball Australia National Kevin Coombs Cup while representing Victoria, and taking out the Bendigo Classic Wheelchair Basketball tournament with his Berwick Saints teammates. Bailey was excited to hear he had been selected as a finalist. "I was pretty thrilled because I knew a lot of people were nominated. I thought I might have been in with a chance but I didn't know if I'd be a top three finalist," he said. "I'm glad that they recognised the work I've
put in with basketball and in the community. It makes me want to keep going because I know that people are starting to see the improvements I'm making. "It would mean a lot [to win]. It would inspire other kids too as they would see that I've been in their situation and you can get out of it." Bailey has improved his game tremendously since taking up wheelchair basketball just one year ago and it's all due to his dedication to the sport. "I look back on when I first started and I've come a long way in a short period of time. I put in the effort and training and because of that, I feel like I can fast track myself," he said. "The more I put in, the better I get and this nomination makes me want to work harder." Being active has always been an important part of Bailey's life and finding a sport that he can truly compete at the highest level in means so much to him. "Playing sport since I was a kid has been very important to me because I just love it," he said. "Being able to play a sport, and being able to excel at it, really excites me because I know I can reach the highest levels in that sport." You can follow Bailey's journey at facebook. com/baileyjankovicwb.

Local clubs get behind Team 11’s A-League push By Nick Creely The bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria has received the overwhelming backing of many local Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong clubs. In total, 43 clubs from all different regions in the south-east have provided Letters of Support to Team 11’s bid, which was conveyed to Football Federation Australia and Deloitte as part of the bid team’s Expression of Interest submission. Of the 43 clubs, 21 of those fall within the local region of Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong, with larger clubs such as Berwick City, Dandenong Thunder and Pakenham United all getting behind the bid.
Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley said the bid would work with these clubs - and as many others as possible in south-east Victoria - in the coming months to establish what a formal working relationship would look like if and when the A-League push is successful. “This club will be nothing without the backing of the local football community,” Windley said. “The support received thus far has been incredible and we can’t thank enough the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run these clubs to help Team 11’s bid. “We would love to have working relationships with all clubs in the south-east of Victoria. “This is a club that has to be of benefit to its
local football community. It goes beyond simply playing A-League and W-League matches locally, it has to be a genuine positive presence in the community and provide a genuine professional pathway for our young boys and girls. “These Letters of Support are an indication from our community that we are building this bid in the right way thus far.” The clubs that have provided letters of support so far are: Afghan Victory, Aspendale, Berwick Churches, Berwick City, Bunyip and District Strikers, Casey Comets, Casey Panthers, Chelsea, Dandenong City, Dandenong South, Dandenong Thunder, Doveton, Endeavour Hills Fire, Endeavour Sporting Club, Endeavour United, Gippsland FC, Hampton Park Sparrows, Inverloch Stars, James Cook FC,
Keysborough, Knox Churches, Korumburra City, Langwarrin, Mazenod Victory, Mornington, Mount Martha, Newborough-Yallourn, Old Mentonians, Pakenham United, Peninsula Strikers Junior FC, Peninsula Strikers Senior FC, Sandown Lions, Skye United, South Springvale, Southern United, Springvale City, Springvale White Eagles, Trafalgar Victory, Traralgon City, Warragul United, Westernport, White Star Dandenong, Wonthaggi United. Casey Comets president Dawn Stone spoke about the significance of the support the Team 11 bid had received across the board. “To get everybody’s buy-in like we have shows the importance of this to the community and just the want and the need to have this come to our region,“ she said.
Super Slam to kick off By Nick Creely All 18 Victorian Premier Cricket clubs are officially locked in to a new and exciting Twenty20 competition this season, with the first ever Super Slam to kick off this season. A new concept by Cricket Victoria, the aim is to split the 18 teams into two conferences named after BBL clubs Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, and will be a standalone competition aimed at developing potential Big Bash players. In other news across Victorian Premier Cricket, Casey-South Melbourne has brought in two quality additions into their squad, with Dandenong’s Ryan Quirk and Narre North Turf 2 premiership star Josh Dowling signing on at Casey Fields. Quirk won the Premier second XI player of the year award after compiling 716 runs next year and will be looking for an opportunity at a higher level, while pace bowler Dowling returns to the Premier fold after also playing a first XI game with Dandenong a few years ago.

AFL South East has confirmed that they are investigating Marc Holt after an incident back on 30 June against Berwick, with the legendary Cranbourne goal kicker set for a date with the tribunal. The incident occurred at half-time at Edwin Flack Reserve, with a melee ensuing after Wickers forward Harry Money kicked the ball into the man on the mark, sparking the fight. Video footage appeared to show Marc Holt lash out at Wickers ruckman Matthew Young while being restrained by several players, before being ushered away by his team-mates towards the race. There was no report by the umpires at the time, and Berwick opted against launching an investigation after closely examining the footage, and confirmed that Young hadn’t sustained any injuries as a result of the incident. However, the league has launched its own investigation for almost two weeks, and has informed both clubs that Holt will need to sit at
the tribunal, meaning he is potentially going to miss a number of weeks. The News understands that Holt’s advocate is not available this week, meaning the tribunal will likely sit on either Tuesday 24 July or Wednesday 25 July, putting him in doubt for the Eagles’ next game, which is against Officer. It’s also understood that Holt is currently on nine points, well short of the 16 points required for a life ban, so is not in danger of eventually reaching the historic milestone, which came agonisingly close on Saturday. Depending on what happens at the tribunal hearing, it will put a cloud over when Holt will kick his 1000th goal after finishing the round on 999 next to his name. The champion forward was simply sublime in the Eagles’ barnstorming win over Tooradin on Saturday, kicking seven majors to take his tally to 30 for the season (second in the competition). The News contacted both Berwick and Cranbourne, with both declining to comment on an active investigation.

The Cavs are rising to the occasion at the business end of the 2018 Big V basketball season. The State Championship Men are currently in the midst of a tough fight as they look to cement themselves in the post-season. To say their home clash on Saturday night against the Hume City Broncos was vital would be an understatement. The Cavs came out on a mission and with incredible three-point shooting, put the Broncos to the sword, winning 12290. The team's defence was sublime and their offence was firing on cylinders - four players scored 20 points or more. Brent Hobba was simply unstoppable, catching fire from deep to finish with 25 points on 7/10 from three-point land. Matt Donlan joined in the three-point party too, hitting 5/9 from deep to finish with 22 points. Overall, the team hit an outrageous 15/29 shots from deep. Raheem Lemons (24 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists) was his usual dominant self, while Ben Louis (15 points, 12 assists, 9 rebounds) fell just shy of a triple-double. The win sees Casey (12-8) sit fifth with two regular season games remaining. The Division 1 women continued their terrific season with a dominant win over Hawthorn on the road on Saturday night, 90-66. Casey was too strong, with four players scoring 13 points or more. Tanarly Hood (18 points, 6 steals) led the way, while Jamie-Lee Jeffs re-
corded a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Cavs (16-4) sit second, just one win behind the Mildura Heat. The Youth League 1 men made it one win from two outings over the weekend. On Friday night at home, the Cavs took care of business against Hume City, 91-72. In a total team effort, six Cavs scored in double digits, led by Brendon Head (19 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists). Unfortunately, they were unable to back up that performance in their final game of the season, falling to Ballarat on the road, 115-77. With just six players suiting up, it was always going to be difficult for the Cavs. Luke Beard (24 points, 8 rebounds) and Alex Bazzucchini (16 points, 12 rebounds) battled valiantly. The Cavs (8-14) finished the season in tenth. The Youth League 2 women comprehensively defeated Blackburn at home on Saturday night, 77-50. The Cavs' defence smothered their opponents, forcing the Vikings into a whopping 43 turnovers. Rebecca Peacock (19 points, 7 steals, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and Stephanie Leclerc (11 steals, 7 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) were involved in everything. The Cavs (14-2) sit two games clear on top. Round 17 sees a Division 1 and Youth League 2 women's double-header tip off from 6pm on Saturday night at Casey Stadium, while the State Championship men head to Keilor on Sunday afternoon.

Holt’s magic thrills crowd By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 12 (SPLIT ROUND) It was virtually deafening every time Cranbourne legend Marc Holt flew at the football. On Saturday, every ball that came into his space stuck to his hands like glue, it was a power forward unable to be stopped in front of passionate home fans waiting to see whether he could cross the 1000-goal mark. Despite finishing the day with a couple of blemishes and remaining on 999 goals, his third quarter, featuring four goals was the most dominant of any player this season. Eventually, the dam wall broke wide open after the Eagles took a nine-point lead at half time, putting on an attacking masterclass against Tooradin in the third quarter that netted 11.4 to just 1.1. "Yeah, he was back to some vintage form his third quarter, he was unstoppable. Every time the ball went his way, he marked it," Eagles coach Steve O'Brien said of Holt's display. "It's great to see - there was a good crowd there, and they were fully entertained in the third." Seagulls defender Matt Sloper battled valiantly and probably took the chocolates after restricting Holt to two first half goals, but couldn't handle his power and timing after half time. With superb delivery by the likes of Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Davey in the middle, Holt pulled down some phenomenal contested marks - often with three or four defenders hanging on to him - and converted them from all angles as the scoreboard updated his goal tally. Besides shooting for the rare feat, it was a game-changing performance, and zapped any momentum that Lachie Gillespie's gallant side had heading into the second half, with the home side powering away to a 23.16 (154) to 10.6 (66) victory. Early in the final term, Holt juggled a mark tight on the boundary, duly snapping around his body for his seventh and 999th goal. It was highly skilful, and potentially the start of a historic 30-minutes for the club. But, agonisingly, Holt missed two gettable shots within minutes of each other in the final term, and didn't have enough time to create some history. More importantly, on the scoreboard, the Eagles had slammed on 13 goals to one after half time, with Nathan Gardiner and Kirk Dick30 STAR NEWS

A young fan consoles Holt after the siren. 182902 son also sharing seven goals between them as they provided the perfect foil for Holt, while Marusic had a dose of leather poising and big ruckman Michael Wenn had a major presence around the ground with some injuries leaving them light on for rotations late. In a promising first half for the visitors - who were eventually blown away by the emotion of
the day - many could hold their heads high after battling to the end. Nick Lang, Sloper, skipper Matt Livermore and Brad Lenders were particularly eye-catching, and weren't afraid to try and bring the ball back into the corridor. O'Brien concedes that it was a "scrappy" first half, but was able to swing the momentum despite some injuries to key players and
run the Seagulls - who were brave for a half off their feet. "We started playing our brand in the third quarter - we didn't focus on the scoreboard at all, it was about the brand of footy we were playing, we just had to correct a few things, and we managed to do that, and the rest looked after itself," he said. "It's been a strong point running out games, and we challenged a few of our guys to push through, so it gives us a lot of confidence that we are always going to be thereabouts." O'Brien said that late in the game his side tried to get Holt to the milestone, but insisted it wouldn't stress the legend too much. "In the last, he had a couple of chances (to kick his 1000th), but he missed them, but the game was in the keeping so it was definitely a focus to try and get him over the line," he said. "The thing about Marc is, he's an unselfish player - for him, it was never about the milestone, but it would have been nice considering the day at the club, but for him, it was just about the team and performing the way he needed to." In another heart-warming moment in another strong win that has the Eagles now back to second with Berwick yet to play this round, youngster Nick Darbyshire played his first senior game since a major health scare on the field earlier this season, kicking a goal after taking a brilliant mark in the third term. "When we read his name out on Thursday, there was a pretty big roar in the room, because it was a scary moment - he's been all ticked off, and he's a valuable player for us," O'Brien said. "It's good to have him back and up and about." The only negative to come out of the day is the impending tribunal hearing set to take place, with the league confirming that Marc Holt is being investigated for an incident against Berwick back on 30 June, potentially putting a cloud over when he will reach the historic milestone. Meanwhile, down at Starling Road, Officer defeated Doveton in a must-win clash, 19.11 (125) to 8.10 (58). As a result of the win - which was set up by a dominant second half - the Kangaroos have created a six-point gap from Pakenham in sixth. The second half of the round will take place this weekend, with Pakenham hosting ladder leaders Narre Warren and Beaconsfield taking on great rivals Berwick at Holm Park. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Panthers score gutsy win By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 14 Brilliant displays by star pair Mat Fletcher and Michael Theodoridis have guided Devon Meadows to a narrow win over Somerville, 11.13 (79) to 9.14 (68). Theodoridis slotted five in a dynamic display up forward, bringing his tally up 45 for the season, while Fletcher continued his superb season with a classy display around the ground. The game was even early, but the Panthers broke clear to kick four goals to one in the second term to take a 17-point half time lead. Despite the Eagles showing some fight, the Panthers kept the visitors at bay with a four goal to five second half to run out winners. Down at Thomas Barclay Oval, meanwhile, Pearcedale was no match for Hastings after quarter time, 17.11 (113) to 7.8 (50). The Panthers were down by 19-points at quarter time, but conceded 13 goals after quarter time to fall to a heavy defeat. Young midfielder Luke Dalmau was the best for the Panthers on a tough day. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 13 Rowville sits fourth on the ladder after taking care of business on the road against Balwyn on the weekend. The Hawks were trailing by five points at half-time, but an eight-goal to one second half saw Rowville claim a 14.9 (93) to 8.7 (55) win. Jackson McDonald and James Gwilt were superb for the Hawks. Noble Park led at the first break against Vermont, but were overrun after quarter time, falling 17.13 (115) to 11.9 (75). Kyle Martin continues to stand tall for the Bulls and was best afield for his side. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 13 Keysborough was far too strong for East Brighton, winning 23.7 (145) to 12.9 (81). Chris Bryan was the star with 10 goals, while Corey Hargreaves booted six majors. Ryan Hendy and Ricky Johnson combined for 10 goals as the Doveton Eagles dismantled Hampton in a high-scoring affair, 24.14 (158) to 14.6 (90). Reece Hancock (three goals) was sublime for the Eagles. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 12 Springvale Districts handed Black Rock a 101-point loss. The Demons, led by Jacob Bakes and Lachlan Morrey (five goals), won 17.15 (117) to 2.4 (16) after holding Black Rock goalless for the first three quarters. Endeavour Hills made an inaccurate Ashwood pay, claiming a big 8.11 (59) to 1.10 (16) win at home. Daniel Batson and Ben Holland were involved in everything for the Falcons. Hallam was unable to overcome a slow start against South Yarra at home, falling 7.7 (49) to 4.5 (29). Mitchell Lambert and Matthew Studd were valiant all day for the Hawks. Hampton Park claimed another big win, proving too strong for Heatherton at Ross Street Reserve, running out 15.11 (101) to 6.7 (43) winners. Travis Davis and Shannon Hen-

Brenton Rafferty and Alex Wilson combined for 10 goals as Toby Darma also starred for Carrum Patterson Lakes. Danny Hartley and Matthew Leombruni battled hard for the Pumas. Sandown's slow start proved costly against Cerberus, falling 11.14 (80) to 10.4 (64) at home. The Cobras were led by Josh Hurford and Shane Cosstick. Lyndhurst made light work of Dandenong at Marriott Waters Reserve. The Lightning led by 30 points at quarter time and the onslaught continued as Hamish Browning booted seven majors in a dynamic display up forward and Jarryd McGrath provided plenty of attacking forays. Despite the 17.19 (121) to 1.6 (12) loss, Josh Cole and Michael Scott were valiant for the Redlegs.
Devon Meadows was graced by the presence of 251-game St Kilda legend Nicky Winmar (left) at a luncheon celebrating NAIDOC Week on Saturday prior to the Panthers' home clash against Somerville. Winmar, who played 230 games for the Saints and another 21 for the Western Bulldogs, is famous for his strong stance against racism in 1993 after being racially abused in a game against Collingwood, lifting his guernsey and pointing to his skin in what has become one of the most iconic sporting images in Australian history.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Doveton SC relinquished top spot on the State League 2 ladder after a 0-0 draw against Brandon Park at Waratah Reserve, and has now slipped to second as a result of Knox City’s 5-0 win over Peninsula Strikers. The Doves will face Doncaster Rovers on Saturday as they look to get back to the top. Berwick City, meanwhile, suffered a 2-1 loss to Mazenod Victory, and are now sitting in fourth and four points away from the top.
