A dazzling love affair
Opera Australia's Madame Butterfly made its inaugural performance at Bunjil Place. Picture: CONTRIBUTED
For the first time ever, Bunjil Place's 800seat theatre hosted one of Australia's most prestigious arts and theatre companies on Tuesday 17 July. Opera Australia's production of Puccini's Madame Butterfly made its way to the dazzling new arts precinct, featuring singers performing with a chamber orchestra, along with a children's chorus drawn from local communities including Berwick's own Melbourne Youth Chorale. The love story follows a U.S. Naval officer B.F. Pinkerton who arrives in Japan and when the gorgeous geisha Butterfly arrives, he is transfixed by her charms

Teen thug attack A mother has told of how her teenage son has been left "scared half to death" following a terrifying daylight robbery in Hampton Park on Wednesday 11 July. The 17-year-old was walking home from gym along Fordham Road when a group of young thugs allegedly approached him at 2.20pm. One of the youths threatened the victim with unknown weapon and demanded that he hand over his mobile phone, police say. "Before handing over his phone, the offender struck the victim to the leg with the unknown weapon," said police spokeswoman
Creina O'Grady. The victim handed over his phone and a small amount of cash before the group fled towards Hampton Park Shopping Centre. Police patrolled the area but were unable to track down the culprits. The victim didn't suffer any injuries. "He said as soon as he saw them he knew what was going to happen and there was no escape," said the teen's mother, who wished to remain anonymous. She said her son was an "easy target" and was in the "wrong place, wrong time." "They're mostly a pack of gutless a*******s and they always go in groups because they're
"They couldn't care less even though he's been severely traumatised they can't do anything," she said. She said had little faith in the justice system even if those responsible are caught. "The magistrate lets them off. The message they're told is 'Do whatever the hell you like because nothing's going to happen.'" "I really think something serious needs to be done from a legislative point to stop all of this happening. The government needs to get serious about it." Casey CIU detectives are investigating the robbery. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au

more intimidating. "There were five or six of them and they've punched him - it's any wonder why he's scared half to death," she said. "He's extremely shaken up, very flat and had a terrible night's sleep. "I've never had anything like this happen, you hardly ever hear of it in Hampton Park." Adding to the frustration was the fact that she would still have to pay off her son's stolen phone which is under contract with Vodafone and also not insured. "I will still have to pay for his phone even though it's been stolen and unlikely to see it again.

Train headaches for all By Brendan Rees Commuters will face days of train pain with disruptions hitting the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Dandenong lines as platforms are extended next month to cater for new high-capacity metro trains. As part of an 11-day August construction blitz, buses will replace trains between Saturday 4 August and Monday 14 August on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines past Dandenong as part of the construction blitz. Replacement buses will run between Dandenong and Cranbourne from 4-5 August, between Dandenong and Pakenham from 4-12 August, then between Westall, Cranbourne and
Pakenham on 13 and 14 August. During this time, there will be express bus services between Westall and Cranbourne and Pakenham, and additional services that will stop at all stations. Acting Minister for Public Transport Luke Donnellan said the upgrades were urgently needed to keep up with demand on Melbourne's busiest train lines. "We ask passengers to bear with us through these disruptions as we work towards creating the train service that Victorians expect." "Unless we act now, the system will eventually run itself into the ground," he said. Works will include building longer platforms
and replace ageing rail infrastructure to improve train reliability. Opposition Public Transport Minister David Davis said the biggest question was "Why on earth didn't they do some of this upgrade work while they had the line out of action with the sky rail construction?" "Why couldn't they do both of them at once instead of inconveniencing people twice," he said. "There's already been month and months of disruption. Everyone understands the various upgrade works need to occur but surely you'd think they could coordinate those works with the earlier works."
Buses will replace trains on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines next month. 182808 Picture: GARY SISSONS

What or who got you interested in photography? My Aunty Terry used to always take photos of animals and nature and through her I got my love for taking photos, she even got one of her photos into the National Geographic. What was your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment would be when I was in Grade 5 I went on a family holiday to Exmouth and I went swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo Reef. It was so amazing to be so close to the massive creatures as they peacefully swam by me. What are you going to do on the school holidays? Over the school holidays I plan on hanging out with my friends, reading a few books that I got for Christmas, going to see some new movies out in the cinema, especially the Incredibles 2 and having some rest time considering we just finished exams at school. My family also plans on going to the Werribee Zoo for a night time tour which I am excited for because I love animals. What is your favorite movie? As a kid my all-time favourite movie was Arthur and the Invisibles Trilogy, I loved it because it mixed real life with fantasy and it had a great characters. Footy team you support and why? I support Essendon Football Club and I have barracked for that team since I was born because that's the team my dad goes for and a family friend brought me a membership the year I was born. So I didn't get much of a choice in the matter. At school I...... At school I love doing the production each year. This year’s was Fame. I love doing it because all of the people are so nice and friendly. I also enjoy my math subjects and hanging out with friends.
with Locky Ellis, Cranbourne South resident and aspiring photographer
Favorirte holiday spot in Australia? My favorite holiday place in Australia to go is definitely Rottnest island, it has the most amazing views and awesome beaches to sun bake and lagoons to go snorkeling in. As well as that the island is filled with adorable little quokka's that, if you're lucky, let you hand feed them and pat them. Which 6 dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? The six people I would invite to dinner would be: My Aunty Terry who passed away late last year so I could see her again. David Attenborough because I have loved watching his shows throughout my whole childhood. Steve Irwin because I share his love for animals and I have always wanted to meet him. I feel like everyone would say this but I think meeting the Queen would be an amazing experience so I would
also invite the Queen. The next person I would invite would be Lin Manuel Miranda, the man who played Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton because he is amazing at what he does and is love to meet him. The last person I would invite would be Tom Holland, the guy who plays Spider-Man in the marvel movies. He seems like a really nice person and I would love to meet him. What's your favorite book? My favorite book would have to be The Giver because it explores a futuristic way of life and I find it very interesting to read and analyse. Which band or singer would you most like to see live? If I could see anyone live in concert I would definitely see Shawn Mendes because I love his music.

Basketball has always been a huge part of Kash Gaitely's life. Despite still being in his formative years, Mr Gaitely, 19, has a wealth of experience associated with his favourite sport. When he wasn't shooting hoops, the Pakenham Upper teen was watching the champions of the NBL clash on centre stage. But a turning point came at the age of 15, when Mr Gaitely conceded that he was lacking the fitness to keep up with the sport's major players. With the dream of being on-court for a NBL showdown still at the forefront of his mind, he decided to embark on a different trajectory. "I love refereeing - it's such a challenge," he said. He took his first step towards greatness last month, crowned as metropolitan Melbourne's best junior referee at a Basketball Victoria awards ceremony. For Mr Gaitely, who one day aspires to referee NBL matches and international competitions, it is a huge blessing. "It's taken a lot of effort and practice for me to get here, but it's a huge acknowledgement and I couldn't be happier," he said. "I've been doing it for four years because I discovered I wasn't fit enough to keep playing, but I wanted to be a part of it. For the 19-year-old, the role requires a great deal of dedication and commitment. He referees five nights a week, which also includes weekend work - but the sacrifice is worth it. Since winning the title, it has been business as usual for Mr Gaitely - who has continued refereeing games in Pakenham and the wider region. Described as tenacious and dedicated, his superior Warwick Loveless from the Victorian

Kash Gaitely with his award, received for high-standard refereeing. 182495 Basketball Referees Association said he has no doubt the 19-year-old will make it to the world stage.
"He's a dedicated, hardworking young fellow who works very hard to get where he is and won't stop until he makes it," he said.

To clarify, the Officer community aren’t objective to the Station Street Hotel project, we are strongly objecting to the 80 poker machines the applicants want to install. Cardinia Council voted unanimously to reject the application along with Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) to denied them a licence for 80 gambling machines. Now the applicants Mr Rice and McDonald are appealing to VCAT to overturn the will of the Officer Community, and the decisions of Cardinia Shire Council and VCGLR. Kicking goals for good sports Casey Council has launched a new program aimed at inspiring, encouraging and breaking down barriers to get more women and girls involved in sport and physical activity. Council kicked off the We Are We Can We Will program at Casey Stadium recently, featuring an inspirational presentation from Olympic freestyle swim champion Elka Whalan Graham and a group fitness activity delivered by former Melbourne Vixens netballer, Ashlee Howard. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. "Through this campaign, council aims to empower and support more women and girls to get active and get involved in sport and recreation opportunities in the local community," he said. "While it's widely known that being active is important for our physical and mental health, research shows that females of all ages generally have lower physical activity participation rates than males, female participation through sporting or recreational clubs is lower and women and girls generally experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active. "As we roll-out this program initially over the next 12 months, Council hopes to inspire, boost confidence, reduce stigma and stereotypes and address barriers to participation to support more women and girls to get active." Through We Are We Can We Will, Council will be: Sharing the stories of local campaign ambassadors who are involved in sport and active recreation in a range of ways. Promoting a variety of local sport and recreation opportunities that exist across Casey. Providing learning and development opportunities that increase the skills of women and girls enabling greater involvement across all aspects of the sector. Hosting a summit that will bring together women and girls from across Casey to take part in workshops, roundtables, practical sessions and panel sessions.

Holy collectable comics, Batman. Remember these?
Glass at her throat By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man accused of slapping his girlfriend's head and holding broken glass to her throat has told a court that "she's the abuser in the relationship". "I'm not a violent person in nature," he told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 16 July. "I'm not a violent person generally. I don't resort to violence." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen replied: "But your history is violence." During an argument at a Narre Warren South home on 15 July, she had taunted him about a rumour that he was sleeping with his sister, police told the court. The man allegedly grabbed her throat, pushed her on the bed and demanded "who told you that?". He slapped her head up to 20 times, and picked up a broken glass and put it to her throat,
the victim claimed. "You're lucky I didn't kill you," he allegedly told her. "I've never wanted to kill someone as much as I do now." At one point, the man was armed with a kitchen knife while the victim tried to hold shut a side door, police alleged. He grabbed her phone before she could reach triple-0. She fired off text messages to her niece, telling her that the man had struck her. "I want you to have evidence if something happens to me," she wrote. The niece contacted police, who later arrived and arrested the man. At the hearing, he consented to an interim full intervention order protecting the victim. However, his lawyer indicated he would later contest the order.
Police opposed bail to the man, who was charged with recklessly causing injury and threatening to kill. He had several pending and prior matters including multiple burglaries, criminal damage, assaults, failure to answer bail, a threat to kill and driving offences. "His history suggests he will continue to commit violence," nominal informant Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court. The man made partial admissions to police, but told the court that "she was the one with the knife, I had the piece of glass". A defence lawyer told the court that the man was a heavy smoker of cannabis, and used ice "from time to time". Magistrate Vandersteen ruled the man was unable to provide "compelling reasons" for being bailed. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 July.
Court says ‘sorry’ isn’t good enough By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "duplicitous" man has been jailed for persistently breaching an intervention order despite being convicted several times in the past year. Recently, the 47-year-old breached a goodbehaviour bond and a community corrections order for the same types of crime, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 16 July. He had been previously convicted for breaching the same intervention order "hundreds" of times in August, December and February, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man was "respectful" and "polite" in court yet he continued to re-offend. Mr Vandersteen told the man: "It's not a question of being sorry to me ... it's a question of being accountable on these orders. "You can't be duplicitous."
The man produced "conflicting material" in his defence, such as wanting to reconcile with his family while he was in love with another woman. The accused lacked insight into his conduct, persistently re-offended and tried to reduce his moral culpability, Mr Vandersteen said. The man may have a "personality disorder" leading to different personalities and outcomes depending on who he was dealing with, the magistrate mused. "He's trying to manipulate himself out of this." As part of his defence, he penned a letter expressing what his lawyer described as his "sincere regret". He also submitted a mental health report, a letter from a Berwick business, his current partner and his step-daughter. His persistent text messages and calls to his ex-wife had been an "attempt to re-unite his
family", the lawyer said. "He was thinking with his heart and not his head." The man apologised to the court, saying he was "definitely remorseful" and pledged never to re-offend. "I'm just making excuses now. I understand what I did was wrong. "Last time I was angry and confused. I thought everyone was at fault except myself. "I'm the one who broke the law and broke the order." The man was convicted, fined $1000 and jailed for six months - including 27 days in presentence detention. His jail term will be followed by a 12-month supervised community corrections order including mental health treatment and behavioural programs.

Connor now work ready As a 19-year-old high school graduate, Connor Noonan had no idea what career path to explore. "Apart from not wanting a desk job, I had no real idea about what I wanted to do. I was just applying for any job that would take me, and figured something would come up," Connor says. At an interview, Connor was told about the Citi New Recruits Program. Having never been employed before, he saw the program as a valuable experience that would look good on his resume and open up job opportunities, so he signed up. "I found the program incredibly helpful," Connor says, "it taught me a range of important skills and gave me more confidence when going in for a job - it was really worth my time." One year on, the 20 year-old Berwick resident is thriving as a parks and gardens apprentice at Haileybury College in Keysborough. And just last week he was announced as one of four scholarship winners on 11 July who will travel to Sydney for a cultural and career development experience for a week. "I was very surprised but also excited because it'll give me a good opportunity to expand my knowledge on what I'm currently learning at TAFE and work," says Connor. "It'll be a good opportunity for me to branch out from what I normally do day-today. I think it'll be really beneficial to help out with my apprenticeship." The Citi Foundation scholarships are awarded to young people who have completed a three-week Citi New Recruits job-readiness
Keep the very special
Connor Noonan has taken out a scholarship for excelling in his apprenticeship. Picture: CONTRIBUTED program and have since excelled in their traineeship. Connor plans to finish his Certificate III in Parks and Gardens at Holmesglen TAFE in Glen Waverley, then upskill further so he can become a qualified gardener and landscaper. While Connor says "gardening was the furthest thing from my mind when I graduated", over the past year he says he has grown to love it. "I find it therapeutic in a way. I like to work with my hands and love working outside in the sun, rather than stressing out behind a desk."

Domestic attacker ‘a risk’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old Berwick man accused of drunkenly assaulting his family has been told he had little chance of being granted bail. The man applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 16 July after being remanded for slapping his sister and striking his father-in-law's face during the weekend incident.
He had been having a good time, drinking with his brother at his mother's house, he told the court. It had been the first time he'd had a drink for a while, he said. "I lost myself in my drink." He tearfully added that he'd let down a lot of people, including the magistrate. "Since the last time I seen you, I left the courtroom proud. I left the courtroom happy. "In my head, I had it worked out what I was
going to tell you." Four days earlier, he'd appeared at the same court on a family violence matter. He was set to face other criminal matters on 10 August, and on a Corrections-supervised bail program - meaning he needed to prove exceptional circumstances for his release. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green said police would oppose any future bail application, including for an unac-
ceptable risk of reoffending. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told the man that his chances of getting bail was "very low" because he'd reoffended while out on bail. "If you made an application for bail then I'd refuse it." The court made full intervention orders protecting both victims. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 July.

For expert treatment Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities, so it's no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia's leading musculoskeletal podiatrists, foot and leg pain expert and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. "Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal po-
diatrist to assist," Dr Dowie said. "Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips." Dr Dowie explained that even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treatments including Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma), prescription orthoses, stress and load management strategies. "Traditional treatments such as cortisone,
anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it's important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine," Dr Dowie said. "Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have treated some of the world's best athletes and thousands of people of all ages suffering foot and leg pain." To book in with Dr Dowie at the Foot and Leg Pain Clinic in Berwick, call 1300 328 300.

The skin cancer experts at Berwick and Officer Sun Patrol are warning that skin cancer can occur even in the depths of winter. Berwick Sun Patrol team member Dr Michael Inskip explained that no matter the time of year, it’s always important for people to book in for a skin cancer check. “There is no doubt that the higher your lifetime exposure to sun (recreational or occupational), the higher your lifetime risk of skin cancers,” Mr Inskip said. “This risk is further increased if you have a paler skin type or a family history of skin cancers.” Mr Inskip said there was also “a bit of a tendency to forget about skin cancers when it is not sunny.” “Skin cancers will appear all year around,” he said. “So please don’t wait till spring to have a check with a highly qualified doctor at either of our Sun Patrol clinics in Berwick or Officer.” For more information, phone 1300SUNPATROL or visit sunpatrolscc.com.au.

CLUB BRINGS RESIDENTS TOGETHER WHEN Villawood launched its $5 million residents' club at Delaray in Clyde North last week the star of the show was 79-year old great grandmother Marlene Nealon. After 15 years in Berwick, Marlene, who has six sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, moved to Delaray in January. Marlene and her beloved dog Sooty featured in a promotional video shown to guests at the club opening. "I feel so comfortable here, it's the whole community feeling," Marlene said. "I take Sooty for a walk every morning. People are working in their gardens, you can stop and talk to them. "There is nothing I like more than taking Sooty and my great-grandchildren to the park. There are kids of all nationalities and everybody is playing. It's just beautiful." At an age when most people would be moving into a retirement village, Marlene said she wanted to live "where I had lots children around me". "I have five or six backyards which back onto mine. I sit out and listen to the chidren playing. It's wonderful." The residents' club was also one of the reasons Marlene was attracted to Delaray. The architecturally designed residents' club features two swimming pools, a fully-equipped gym, function room and theatrette, library, parents' lounge, community garden, men's shed and tennis court. A cafe will open in the next few month, while a childcare centre is planned to be built on land next door. Villawood Properties CEO Phil Hanna said the clubhouse model was a way of promoting social inclusiveness and cohesion. He said the club was the "heart

"By giving our residents more opportunities to connect, through structures such as Club Delaray, the more familiar they become with the people living around them and it fosters a sense of safety, a sense of shared ownership and ultimately a strong and genuine
sense of community." Mr Hanna said Club Delaray represented a $5 million investment in the community. Villawood Properties doesn't make any profit on the facility and the club will become common property once it is completed. It will then be owned by the
Owners Corporation. For her part, Marlene said she was looking forward to the cafe opening, borrowing books from the library and meeting even more of her neighbours. "I think I've got a new life in Delaray. I'm not moving from here. I'm happy." ●

Since opening its new hospital in January this year, St John of God Berwick Hospital has welcomed more than 360 babies into its brand new, state of the art maternity facilities. This year the hospital launched its new parental education program, which included free paediatric first aid and sleep settling workshops for past patients and expectant parents. For patients who prefer to take their own photos, the hospital provides loan of a free photography kit. Rest and recovery is an important part of the St John of God Berwick Hospital birthing experience. The hospital understands how overwhelming and tiring those first few days can be and does everything it can to make the transition to parenthood just that little bit easier. During a patient’s stay at the hospital, they can take advantage of the Relax, Recover, Recharge Bath Experience, where mums can have their babies cared for by their midwife while they indulge in a peaceful and relaxing salt bath to help heal and cleanse the body. St John of God Berwick Hospital understands the demands that new parents go through during those first few days. Don’t worry, take action Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic is encouraging men to visit their GP or urologist when facing issues with the “nearest and dearest parts of their bodies". “As a urologist, I frequently deal with blokes worried about what may be normal or may be a significant problem,” Mr McCahy said. “The biggest worry for most men in this area is testicular cancer. Though rare, it is the commonest cancer in young men with most cancers presenting between 15-40 years. “Tumours appear as hard lumps which is why self-examination is a recommended. The good news is that early diagnosis results in almost complete cure, and even late presenting cancers can have very good results. “Lance Armstrong, before certain pharmacologically enhanced bike rides, was the poster boy for testicular cancer survival.” Mr McCahy explained that other lumps that can appear in the scrotum include epididymal cysts, hydrocoeles and varicoceles.

Bailey’s rise continues By Hayley Wildes Berwick 15-year-old Bailey Jankovic has never been one to back down from a challenge and his rapid rise up the wheelchair basketball ranks is a product of his hard work and tremendous attitude. Bailey's meteoric rise continues as he has been recognised as one of three finalists in the Marg Angel Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the upcoming Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards. The awards night, held on 1 August at Southbank, acknowledges athletes, volunteers, clubs, communities, venues and programs that enable and empower people with disability to get active and achieve their goals. To say Bailey is achieving his goals would be an understatement. His recent achievements include winning gold at the prestigious Basketball Australia National Kevin Coombs Cup while representing Victoria, and taking out the Bendigo Classic Wheelchair Basketball tournament with his Berwick Saints teammates. Bailey was excited to hear he had been selected as a finalist. "I was pretty thrilled because I knew a lot of people were nominated. I thought I might have been in with a chance but I didn't know if I'd be a top three finalist," he said. "I'm glad that they recognised the work I've
put in with basketball and in the community. It makes me want to keep going because I know that people are starting to see the improvements I'm making. "It would mean a lot [to win]. It would inspire other kids too as they would see that I've been in their situation and you can get out of it." Bailey has improved his game tremendously since taking up wheelchair basketball just one year ago and it's all due to his dedication to the sport. "I look back on when I first started and I've come a long way in a short period of time. I put in the effort and training and because of that, I feel like I can fast track myself," he said. "The more I put in, the better I get and this nomination makes me want to work harder." Being active has always been an important part of Bailey's life and finding a sport that he can truly compete at the highest level in means so much to him. "Playing sport since I was a kid has been very important to me because I just love it," he said. "Being able to play a sport, and being able to excel at it, really excites me because I know I can reach the highest levels in that sport." Local clubs get behind Team 11’s A-League push By Nick Creely The bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria has received the overwhelming backing of many local Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong clubs. In total, 43 clubs from all different regions in the south-east have provided Letters of Support to Team 11’s bid, which was conveyed to Football Federation Australia and Deloitte as part of the bid team’s Expression of Interest submission. Of the 43 clubs, 21 of those fall within the local region of Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong, with larger clubs such as Berwick City, Dandenong Thunder and Pakenham United all getting behind the bid.
Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley said the bid would work with these clubs - and as many others as possible in south-east Victoria - in the coming months to establish what a formal working relationship would look like if and when the A-League push is successful. “This club will be nothing without the backing of the local football community,” Windley said. “The support received thus far has been incredible and we can’t thank enough the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run these clubs to help Team 11’s bid. “We would love to have working relationships with all clubs in the south-east of Victoria. “This is a club that has to be of benefit to its
local football community. It goes beyond simply playing A-League and W-League matches locally, it has to be a genuine positive presence in the community and provide a genuine professional pathway for our young boys and girls. “These Letters of Support are an indication from our community that we are building this bid in the right way thus far.” The clubs that have provided letters of support so far are: Afghan Victory, Aspendale, Berwick Churches, Berwick City, Bunyip and District Strikers, Casey Comets, Casey Panthers, Chelsea, Dandenong City, Dandenong South, Dandenong Thunder, Doveton, Endeavour Hills Fire, Endeavour Sporting Club, Endeavour United, Gippsland FC, Hampton Park Sparrows, Inverloch Stars, James Cook FC,
Keysborough, Knox Churches, Korumburra City, Langwarrin, Mazenod Victory, Mornington, Mount Martha, Newborough-Yallourn, Old Mentonians, Pakenham United, Peninsula Strikers Junior FC, Peninsula Strikers Senior FC, Sandown Lions, Skye United, South Springvale, Southern United, Springvale City, Springvale White Eagles, Trafalgar Victory, Traralgon City, Warragul United, Westernport, White Star Dandenong, Wonthaggi United. Casey Comets president Dawn Stone spoke about the significance of the support the Team 11 bid had received across the board. “To get everybody’s buy-in like we have shows the importance of this to the community and just the want and the need to have this come to our region,“ she said.
Super Slam to kick off By Nick Creely All 18 Victorian Premier Cricket clubs are officially locked in to a new and exciting Twenty20 competition this season, with the first ever Super Slam to kick off this season. A new concept by Cricket Victoria, the aim is to split the 18 teams into two conferences named after BBL clubs Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, and will be a standalone competition aimed at developing potential Big Bash players. Each team has the potential to sign an interstate and overseas BBL player, with the winner of the Super Slam to go to a Cricket Australia Twenty20 carnival to compete with the winners of other Premier Twenty20 title winners across each state. Local clubs Casey-South Melbourne and Dandenong will form part of the Melbourne Stars conference, joining Fitzroy-Doncaster, Kingston Hawthorn, Camberwell Magpies, Ringwood, Frankston-Peninsula, Monash Tigers and Northcote. In the Melbourne Renegades conference, Greenvale, Melbourne, St Kilda, Prahran, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, Melbourne Uni and Carlton will compete against each other. The games will mostly be played mid-week, which will allow a clearer focus on developing a high performance pathway to Twenty20 cricket, and also allow more two-day cricket to berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
be played in the regular season. “Without out a doubt, it’s a new way of thinking from Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria, - it’s now a pathway for players from every state to show their skills, and maybe get a contract with one of the (BBL) franchises,” Casey-South Melbourne president Ross Hibbins said of the new Twenty20 competition. “It creates a link between Premier Cricket and higher level cricket in the Twenty20 scene, and it’s well overdue.” Hibbins believes the Swans will benefit from more exposure to the Twenty20 format, and hopes to unearth plenty of talent. “There is a real incentive to now find the best players in the region, and specialise in Twenty20, and have a real go at trying to not only win the Stars Conference, but to also try and get to National,” he said. In other news across Victorian Premier Cricket, Casey-South Melbourne has brought in two quality additions into their squad, with Dandenong’s Ryan Quirk and Narre North Turf 2 premiership star Josh Dowling signing on at Casey Fields. Quirk won the Premier second XI player of the year award after compiling 716 runs next year and will be looking for an opportunity at a higher level, while pace bowler Dowling returns to the Premier fold after also playing a first XI game with Dandenong a few years ago.
Casey-South Melbourne will form part of the Stars Conference this season. 175197 Picture: GARY SISSONS “They’re at the age where they can become a force in the future, and we’ll provide the opportunities for those two to really step up to the next level,” Hibbins said.
“We’re really pleased to have them on board.” It comes after the exciting news that Luke Wells - current Sussex player - will join the Swans as captain this season. Thursday, 19 July, 2018

Brent Hobba was on fire for the Cavs, hitting seven triples against Hume City. 182896 Picture: ROB CAREW
The Cavs are rising to the occasion at the business end of the 2018 Big V basketball season. The State Championship Men are currently in the midst of a tough fight as they look to cement themselves in the post-season. To say their home clash on Saturday night against the Hume City Broncos was vital would be an understatement. The Cavs came out on a mission and with incredible three-point shooting, put the Broncos to the sword, winning 12290. The team's defence was sublime and their offence was firing on cylinders - four players scored 20 points or more. Brent Hobba was simply unstoppable, catching fire from deep to finish with 25 points on 7/10 from three-point land. Matt Donlan joined in the three-point party too, hitting 5/9 from deep to finish with 22 points. Overall, the team hit an outrageous 15/29 shots from deep. Raheem Lemons (24 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists) was his usual dominant self, while Ben Louis (15 points, 12 assists, 9 rebounds) fell just shy of a triple-double. The win sees Casey (12-8) sit fifth with two regular season games remaining. The Division 1 women continued their terrific season with a dominant win over Hawthorn on the road on Saturday night, 90-66. Casey was too strong, with four players scoring 13 points or more. AFL South East has confirmed that they are investigating Marc Holt after an incident back on 30 June against Berwick, with the legendary Cranbourne goal kicker set for a date with the tribunal. The incident occurred at half-time at Edwin Flack Reserve, with a melee ensuing after Wickers forward Harry Money kicked the ball into the man on the mark, sparking the fight. Video footage appeared to show Marc Holt lash out at Wickers ruckman Matthew Young while being restrained by several players, before being ushered away by his team-mates towards the race. There was no report by the umpires at the time, and Berwick opted against launching an investigation after closely examining the footage, and confirmed that Young hadn’t sustained any injuries as a result of the incident. However, the league has launched its own investigation for almost two weeks, and has informed both clubs that Holt will need to sit at
the tribunal, meaning he is potentially going to miss a number of weeks. The News understands that Holt’s advocate is not available this week, meaning the tribunal will likely sit on either Tuesday 24 July or Wednesday 25 July, putting him in doubt for the Eagles’ next game, which is against Officer. It’s also understood that Holt is currently on nine points, well short of the 16 points required for a life ban, so is not in danger of eventually reaching the historic milestone, which came agonisingly close on Saturday. Depending on what happens at the tribunal hearing, it will put a cloud over when Holt will kick his 1000th goal after finishing the round on 999 next to his name. The champion forward was simply sublime in the Eagles’ barnstorming win over Tooradin on Saturday, kicking seven majors to take his tally to 30 for the season (second in the competition). The News contacted both Berwick and Cranbourne, with both declining to comment on an active investigation.

corded a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Cavs (16-4) sit second, just one win behind the Mildura Heat. The Youth League 1 men made it one win from two outings over the weekend. On Friday night at home, the Cavs took care of business against Hume City, 91-72. In a total team effort, six Cavs scored in double digits, led by Brendon Head (19 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists). Unfortunately, they were unable to back up that performance in their final game of the season, falling to Ballarat on the road, 115-77. With just six players suiting up, it was always going to be difficult for the Cavs. Luke Beard (24 points, 8 rebounds) and Alex Bazzucchini (16 points, 12 rebounds) battled valiantly. The Cavs (8-14) finished the season in tenth. The Youth League 2 women comprehensively defeated Blackburn at home on Saturday night, 77-50. The Cavs' defence smothered their opponents, forcing the Vikings into a whopping 43 turnovers. Rebecca Peacock (19 points, 7 steals, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and Stephanie Leclerc (11 steals, 7 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) were involved in everything. The Cavs (14-2) sit two games clear on top. Round 17 sees a Division 1 and Youth League 2 women's double-header tip off from 6pm on Saturday night at Casey Stadium, while the State Championship men head to Keilor on Sunday afternoon.

Holt’s magic thrills crowd By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 12 (SPLIT ROUND) It was virtually deafening every time Cranbourne legend Marc Holt flew at the football. On Saturday, every ball that came into his space stuck to his hands like glue, it was a power forward unable to be stopped in front of passionate home fans waiting to see whether he could cross the 1000-goal mark. Despite finishing the day with a couple of blemishes and remaining on 999 goals, his third quarter, featuring four goals was the most dominant of any player this season. Eventually, the dam wall broke wide open after the Eagles took a nine-point lead at half time, putting on an attacking masterclass against Tooradin in the third quarter that netted 11.4 to just 1.1. "Yeah, he was back to some vintage form his third quarter, he was unstoppable. Every time the ball went his way, he marked it," Eagles coach Steve O'Brien said of Holt's display. "It's great to see - there was a good crowd there, and they were fully entertained in the third." Seagulls defender Matt Sloper battled valiantly and probably took the chocolates after restricting Holt to two first half goals, but couldn't handle his power and timing after half time. With superb delivery by the likes of Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Davey in the middle, Holt pulled down some phenomenal contested marks - often with three or four defenders hanging on to him - and converted them from all angles as the scoreboard updated his goal tally. Besides shooting for the rare feat, it was a game-changing performance, and zapped any momentum that Lachie Gillespie's gallant side had heading into the second half, with the home side powering away to a 23.16 (154) to 10.6 (66) victory. Early in the final term, Holt juggled a mark tight on the boundary, duly snapping around his body for his seventh and 999th goal. It was highly skilful, and potentially the start of a historic 30-minutes for the club. But, agonisingly, Holt missed two gettable shots within minutes of each other in the final term, and didn't have enough time to create some history. More importantly, on the scoreboard, the Eagles had slammed on 13 goals to one after half time, with Nathan Gardiner and Kirk Dickberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
A young fan consoles Holt after the siren. 182902 son also sharing seven goals between them as they provided the perfect foil for Holt, while Marusic had a dose of leather poising and big ruckman Michael Wenn had a major presence around the ground with some injuries leaving them light on for rotations late. In a promising first half for the visitors - who were eventually blown away by the emotion of
the day - many could hold their heads high after battling to the end. Nick Lang, Sloper, skipper Matt Livermore and Brad Lenders were particularly eye-catching, and weren't afraid to try and bring the ball back into the corridor. O'Brien concedes that it was a "scrappy" first half, but was able to swing the momentum despite some injuries to key players and
run the Seagulls - who were brave for a half off their feet. "We started playing our brand in the third quarter - we didn't focus on the scoreboard at all, it was about the brand of footy we were playing, we just had to correct a few things, and we managed to do that, and the rest looked after itself," he said. "It's been a strong point running out games, and we challenged a few of our guys to push through, so it gives us a lot of confidence that we are always going to be thereabouts." O'Brien said that late in the game his side tried to get Holt to the milestone, but insisted it wouldn't stress the legend too much. "In the last, he had a couple of chances (to kick his 1000th), but he missed them, but the game was in the keeping so it was definitely a focus to try and get him over the line," he said. "The thing about Marc is, he's an unselfish player - for him, it was never about the milestone, but it would have been nice considering the day at the club, but for him, it was just about the team and performing the way he needed to." In another heart-warming moment in another strong win that has the Eagles now back to second with Berwick yet to play this round, youngster Nick Darbyshire played his first senior game since a major health scare on the field earlier this season, kicking a goal after taking a brilliant mark in the third term. "When we read his name out on Thursday, there was a pretty big roar in the room, because it was a scary moment - he's been all ticked off, and he's a valuable player for us," O'Brien said. "It's good to have him back and up and about." The only negative to come out of the day is the impending tribunal hearing set to take place, with the league confirming that Marc Holt is being investigated for an incident against Berwick back on 30 June, potentially putting a cloud over when he will reach the historic milestone. Meanwhile, down at Starling Road, Officer defeated Doveton in a must-win clash, 19.11 (125) to 8.10 (58). As a result of the win - which was set up by a dominant second half - the Kangaroos have created a six-point gap from Pakenham in sixth. The second half of the round will take place this weekend, with Pakenham hosting ladder leaders Narre Warren and Beaconsfield taking on great rivals Berwick at Holm Park. Thursday, 19 July, 2018

Theodoridis slotted five in a dynamic display up forward, bringing his tally up 45 for the season, while Fletcher continued his superb season with a classy display around the ground. The game was even early, but the Panthers broke clear to kick four goals to one in the second term to take a 17-point half time lead. Despite the Eagles showing some fight, the Panthers kept the visitors at bay with a four goal to five second half to run out winners. Down at Thomas Barclay Oval, meanwhile, Pearcedale was no match for Hastings after quarter time, 17.11 (113) to 7.8 (50). The Panthers were down by 19-points at quarter time, but conceded 13 goals after quarter time to fall to a heavy defeat. Young midfielder Luke Dalmau was the best for the Panthers on a tough day. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 13 Rowville sits fourth on the ladder after taking care of business on the road against Balwyn on the weekend. The Hawks were trailing by five points at half-time, but an eight-goal to one second half saw Rowville claim a 14.9 (93) to 8.7 (55) win. Jackson McDonald and James Gwilt were superb for the Hawks. Noble Park led at the first break against Vermont, but were overrun after quarter time, falling 17.13 (115) to 11.9 (75). Kyle Martin continues to stand tall for the Bulls and was best afield for his side. Hallam was unable to overcome a slow start against South Yarra at home, falling 7.7 (49) to 4.5 (29). Mitchell Lambert and Matthew Studd were valiant all day for the Hawks. Sandown's slow start proved costly against Cerberus, falling 11.14 (80) to 10.4 (64) at home. The Cobras were led by Josh Hurford and Shane Cosstick. Lyndhurst made light work of Dandenong at Marriott Waters Reserve. The Lightning led by 30 points at quarter time and the onslaught continued as Hamish Browning booted seven majors in a dynamic display up forward and Jarryd McGrath provided plenty of attacking forays. Despite the 17.19 (121) to 1.6 (12) loss, Josh Cole and Michael Scott were valiant for the Redlegs.
Devon Meadows was graced by the presence of 251-game St Kilda legend Nicky Winmar (left) at a luncheon celebrating NAIDOC Week on Saturday prior to the Panthers' home clash against Somerville. Winmar, who played 230 games for the Saints and another 21 for the Western Bulldogs, is famous for his strong stance against racism in 1993 after being racially abused in a game against Collingwood, lifting his guernsey and pointing to his skin in what has become one of the most iconic sporting images in Australian history.
