The Belgrave South Community House also has two other buildings which won't be included in the demolition.

The future of the Belgrave South Community House remains uncertain after the Department of Education announced plans in June to demolish the main building.

The building will make way for a $200,000 new, modern outdoor classroom and community centre building, which will be used by Belgrave South Primary School, and by community groups when not in use by the school.

On Tuesday, 3 July, Liberal Candidate for Monbulk, John Schurink visited the site and spoke to the 'Mail' about the buildings importance within the community.

He suggested that if it were refurbished it could continue to service the community and house the Belgrave Men's shed, who are keen to expand.

Currently the Community House, which is on school property, is shared with the Belgrave South Scouts who use it for meetings and to store their equipment.

"For some reason the government wants to demolish this building and clearly it still has several uses," Mr Schurink said.

"The men's shed is looking for alternative accommodation ... well perfect, let's have three community groups providing those sort of services to the community - ranging from the scouts, the occasional care with the community house and then the men's shed as well.

"What a perfect use of a community asset."

It is suggested that the 'community asset' could be used by the Belgrave Men's Shed who are at full capacity and in need of more space.

"In Belgrave we've got a membership of 28 and it's going up," President of the Belgrave Men's Shed, George Harmon said.

"One of the problems we have is lack of space; if 28 people turn up we can't operate, because we have equipment that requires space."

We've had people with disabilities and in a wheelchair that we've had to gently say 'we can't fit you in' ... there's simply no space to work."

The editor’s desk It’s great to be back I stepped into Peter Douglas's role as Mail News Group editor on Monday 2 July.

It's a completely new challenge but there's a familiar feel.

I landed work experience with the Mail's sister company Star News Group during my third year of university.

That led to casual work in the Pakenham head office and then a part-time gig in what was then our Monbulk office.

I was responsible for the Ferntree Gully-Belgrave Mail, eventually in a fulltime role, and relished the opportunity to get to know the community.

We'd moved to the Mount Evelyn office and started the Mount Evelyn Mail before I left the hills to gain further experience in Pakenham, covering Greater Dandenong and dappling in sub-editing.

I learnt a lot during my time away from the Yarra Ranges - about writing, about forming community ties, about shaping a paper, about the online news world.

I'm looking forward to reconnecting with some familiar faces, meeting plenty of new ones, and implementing all that I've learnt, particularly in the online sphere.

We'll be posting stories online more regularly and sharing them on social media to make them easy to find and connect with.

The Mail is now on Instagram, under the handle @mailcommunity.

We'll be sharing some of our favourite snaps from the paper as well as behindthe-scenes shots and images that capture the region.

We welcome readers to tag us in their local shots, and some will make their way into the paper.

Halloween comes to the hills again

The inaugural event attracted thousands of residents to the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve, and Event creator and Director, Andrew Fillip-Gautier, is keen to repeat the event for this year.

To kick off the announcement that the Collective would be running the event again,  a number of local faces volunteered to have their faces painted.

Under the watchful eyes and talents of Melissa Ryan, a team of local make-up artists, photographers, prominent members and leaders of the community came together in the spirit of good will, fun and community.

Gautier commended all participates for sharing with the community their human side away from positions and offices they held.

Healthcare opening Eastern Health has confirmed that the Angliss Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will be opening in October 2018.

The announcement comes a month after Monbulk Liberal Candidate, John Schurink, Member for Eastern Victoria, Edward O'Donohue and Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge met at the hospital to push the State Labor Government to further fund the ICU service at Angliss Hospital.

They claimed that the facilities were already on offer, though could not be provided due to a lack in staffing.

Member for Monbulk, James Merlino recently hit back at the claims and said they were 'unfounded.'

Now, Eastern Health has confirmed that the ICU will open in October 2018 and that the unit will have capacity for up to 14 beds.

"The new unit will have capacity for up to 14 beds. This will include a mix of intensive

care and high dependency beds. For our local community, the Angliss Hospital Expansion will mean we can treat more patients who have complex needs closer to home," Site Director at Angliss Hospital, Paul Leyden said.

"We are currently in the commissioning period for the ICU. "The time period between now and the official opening will provide us with the opportunity to hire and train highly capable critical care staff for the Unit."

In 2016, the State Labor Government announced a $20 million expansion of Eastern Health's Angliss Hospital with a confirmed date of completion for 2018.

Eastern Health Executive Director of Clinical Operations Karen Fox said the project's completion would provide a welcome boost to healthcare in Melbourne's outer east.

"The Angliss Hospital expansion will deliver significant improvements to our clinical environment," she said.

"It will play an important role in ensuring Eastern Health can continue to meet the needs of its community."

Built as part of Angliss Hospital's comprehensive expansion project, the ICU will be located on a new fourth level at the hospital.

Other works also include an expansion of short stay and paediatric facilities, and a refurbishment of the hospital's courtyard.

Ms Fox said Eastern Health has been working closely with the Department of Health and Human Services on transitioning the current high dependency service into an intensive care service.

Ms Fox thanked the State Government for helping Eastern Health deliver this important project, as well as staff, patients and the community for their patience while the works were completed.

"We are grateful to everyone for their support in helping us deliver a better hospital," she said.

The unlikely pair went viral last year.

Fran the famous pig has found a new home in Gladsydale. While Walter rarely rides Fran, he is always happy to spend time with her.

Fran finds new home in greener pastures

By Derek Schlennstedt Fran the famous Monbulk pig is off to greener pastures.

Fran became famous in March 2017, when owner Ryan Kenyon posted a photo of his 18-month-old son, Walter, riding the 170kg pig.

The two made for an unlikely duo and quickly rose to fame.

But now, rather than spending her time with Walter, Fran is off to spend her time in the company of other pigs at an animal rescue in Gladysdale.

In a Facebook post on Friday 6 June, Mr Kenyon said the family was moving overseas and

that the five-year-old pig urgently needed a new home.

Speaking to the 'Mail', Mr Kenyon said he was moving to Thailand for an extended period and was hoping someone would take-on the friendly pig before they leave on 12 July.

"She's a pretty friendly and lazy type of pig, she's got her paddock and all you have to do is give her a scratch every now and then," Mr Kenyon said.

"She really likes people."

Fran the pig was adopted by the Kenyon family after they saw a free to good home post on Facebook.

The original owners from Phillip Island thought she was a miniature pig and were forced to give her up when she became too big for the house.

"They had her as a miniature pig, and she lived in the house and outgrew it," Mr Kenyon said.

Since then Fran has enjoyed four years at the Kenyon's property, and in that time has struck up a special relationship with Walter, Ryan's son.

Walter would sometimes ride on the back of the unperturbed Fran, who didn't seem to notice the light weight on board.

Since then, Walter has outgrown riding Fran, though the two are still good friends.

Woman hospitalised after Gembrook car flip A Gembrook woman in her sixties has been taken to The Alfred Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries following an accident on Gembrook Road on Monday 9 July.

The woman was travelling towards Pakenham when she lost control of her vehicle and mounted an embankment near Clink Road Pakenham Upper just after 10.30am, flipping the car on its roof.

She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Truck driver Curtis Smith was one of the first on the scene of the accident.

"I was driving my truck down this road when I saw a car on its roof and a lady lying face down on the ground," he said.

"There was already another woman there helping her. She had blood coming out of her hand and said her head hurt.

"She wanted her husband to know what had happened, so I reached into the car for her phone to call him. It was hard to get through to him because he was working.

"When I finally reached him she was already on the way to The Alfred so he went straight there."

Acting Senior Sergeant Daniel Wood said speed and alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor to the accident.

"She regularly drives this road and there's no indication that speed or alcohol were a factor in this case," Snr Sgt Wood said.

"This is a reminder to people to drive to the conditions, be careful on wet roads and to not become complacent on roads they are familiar with."

Extinguisher goes off On Monday, 2 July, an individual has set off a dry fire extinguisher at the St Michael and All Angels' Anglican Church in Kalorama.

Each day of the week the church opens at 9am for private services.

On 2 July, between 1 and 2pm, an individual has entered the church and located a dry powder fire extinguisher. They have then used it in the main section of the church.

Olinda Police said the church required extensive cleaning and was closed for a number of days as a result.

Plan to help Monbulk CFA Monbulk CFA will benefit from a $2.4 million redevelopment under a Mathew Guy Liberal Government.

I visited the station recently with the Liberal candidate for Monbulk, John Schurink, who has been working tirelessly with the brigade to secure this commitment to speak to volunteers about their need for a new building.

Monbulk CFA is a busy brigade with specialist capability in ropes and road rescue.

Volunteers respond to car accidents across the Dandenong Ranges and their specialist expertise in ropes rescue is called upon for complex incidents much farther afield.

Since Monbulk Fire Station was built in the

1970s, firefighting technology has changed and fire trucks have grown increasingly bigger.

This means it is now a very tight squeeze between the trucks and the station's walls.

A $2.4 million redevelopment will deliver a modern, four-bay station that is fit for purpose and will allow volunteers to focus on with what they do best - protecting their community.

On another note, last month I read a letter in Parliament that was sent to me by Emerald Secondary College student Jaicob.

Jaicob, who is in Year 7, wrote that he found it 'disgusting that if our school desperately needs something we must get it, as we get minimal support. Doesn't everyone have the

right to an education, yet how can we learn when the walls are crumbling around us. After all, Victoria is supposedly the Education State.'

I could not agree more with Jaicob.

The Education Minister's electorate office is just a few kilometres away but he has been ignoring all pleas from Emerald Secondary College for urgent funding to repair some rapidly deteriorating buildings.

It was a pleasure to receive a letter from such a switched-on young person in my electorate - I encourage more young people to write to or email their local Member about the issues important to them.

A chance to shine

By Derek Schlennstedt Natures Organics, a Ferntree Gully based producer of cleaning and personal care products, has just installed a massive 1.29 megawatt rooftop solar system on its manufacturing plant.

The plant is the first step towards generating 24/7 renewable power, and the $3 million system spans 17000 square metres and uses over 5000 solar panels.

Positioned on top of the Cornhill Street manufacturing building in Ferntree Gully, Managing Director at Natures Organics, Justin Dowell said that since its use the company has saved 1 million kilograms in carbon dioxide equivalent to saving 28,000 trees.

The additions of extra solar panels will double that figure.

"We are the largest user of recycled plastic in the country and we are now the largest privately owned organisation in Australia using solar energy," Mr Dowell said.

It is estimated that the addition of the extra panels will reduce Natures Organics' CO2 emissions by approximately 750 tonnes per annum.

Mr Dowell hoped Nature's Organics use of solar will prompt other organisations to embrace renewables.

"We started this project in 2015 so are thrilled to have the system up and running and are delighted to be recognised as the largest privately owned solar power generator in Australia."

"We are proud to be leaders and early adaptors in our industry of solar panel technology and hope that other businesses will follow suit."

"We are passionate about reducing our impact on the planet and as a team are driven to find innovative ways to do this."

"In the past when we've always looked at solar it was too expensive for the power it generated and the last thing we wanted to do is put a few panels on the roof," he said.

"We didn't want to have a few token panels either; if we were going to do it we wanted to do it properly."

Doing it properly is exactly what they've done.

The vast scale of the project meant great skill and expertise was required to meet the Distribution Network Service Providers requirements and ensure the project was connected to the grid.

Of course, installing the largest privately owned solar power generator in Australia is no easy feat, and Mr Dowell said there were some challenges.

"It's a massive power station on our roof, so if we aren't using it goes into the grid and they have to ensure they can use it when we're not using it."

The panels are expected to produce around 1,800 megawatt hours a year, and Mr Dowell said the next step would be to install battery storage at the site, to "fuel the 24/7 operation," as well as further solar projects at other company facilities.

"For us every new environmental technology is an opportunity ... we are generally the ones who want to pioneer it and prove it works and get other companies to follow."

The Selby Netball, South Belgrave Football Netball and Belgrave Football Netball Clubs will be shooting more goals and growing its ranks with funding from the Andrews Labor Government to provide a lighting upgrade at the Belgrave South Recreation Reserve Netball Facility.

Member for Monbulk, James Merlino announced on 3 July, that the South Belgrave Recreation Reserve Netball Facility was among 25 sports facilities across Victoria to share in more than $2.2 million from the latest round of the Country Football and Netball Program.

"Footy and netball clubs are the heart and soul of the Monbulk electorate," he said.

"This boost will go a long way to helping the local Netball Clubs cater for the growing numbers of people keen to get involved in grassroots sport, providing more opportunities for locals to get active and play the sport they love."

This program replaces and upgrades ageing grounds and facilities for football and netball clubs across regional Victoria, so they can meet growing demand and welcome even more members.

It's a partnership with the AFL, AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria to help football and netball clubs across the state, because everybody deserves equal facilities, no matter where they live.

Grants from the latest round include ground resurfacing, installation of lighting and the construction of new pavilions and netball courts.

In the Monbulk electorate $30,000 will go towards supporting South Belgrave Football Netball Club, Belgrave Football Netball Club and Selby Netball Club at Belgrave South Recreation Reserve Netball Facility for a lighting upgrade so more netballers can train after hours.

Mali, my wife and soul mate - life of every dinner party, with five of my closest friends and

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released data on 21 June 2018 confirming that Victoria is the fastest-growing state in Australia.

Victoria's population increased by 143,400 in 2017, with Melbourne absorbing almost 90% of Victoria's total growth.

Currently, Victoria has 25% of the country's population but took 37% of Australia's entire population growth in 2017.

Victoria had more than 100,000 migrants come to the state, including 84,722 overseas migrants and 16,386 interstate migrants.

Budget of division

By Derek Schlennstedt Councillor Mike Clarke made a stand at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 26 June, voting against this year's Council Budget.

Putting a metaphorical 'line in the sand,' Councillor Clarke said he would not support a budget that allocates only $9.59 of every $100 from ratepayers towards roads, drainage and footpaths.

"As I have said before I cannot support the budget aspect of this item in respect to roads and drainage still not receiving more funding," he said.

"We've seen the public submissions and how many of them are about roads."

"I think that council needs to respond to that demand by increasing the budget for roads, and drainage."

"I'm putting a line in the sand tonight to make a point that I would like to see in the future more funding going toward roads."

Of the $64.29 million budget for 2018-19, Council will spend $6.44 million on roads, $2.26 million on drainage and $4.87 million on footpaths.

An average rate rise of 2.25% means the Council will collect an extra $3.6 million more than last year.

In the 2017 local government community

Councillor Mike Clarke voted against the budget. satisfaction survey, roads were identified in the top three areas that required improvement.

"It is one of our four pillars of quality infrastructure and liveable places ... we just don't seem to be living up to that," Cr Clarke said.

"I'd like to see a program going forward on how we can achieve a budget adjustment in order to improve these areas that are such a big importance to the community."

By July 2019 the council is expected to be $23.1 million in surplus.

Councillor Jim Child said that Council is in a 'very good financial position' and with this budget will continue to be into the future.

"We are in a very good space as far as our future is concerned in regards to our financial position.

"We've been able to maintain that position in regards to rate capping to be able to achieve those services back to our residents, but above all we've been able to continue on with a commitment to a strong capital works program."

Fernlea House grant for terminal help Emerald-based Fernlea House will receive Victorian Government funding to support terminally ill people to be cared for, and die, at home.

Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, on Wednesday 20 June announced Fernlea House as part of 11 services across the state to share in $4.4 million of the second round of the End-

of-Life Ancillary Service Grant program.

Such services are not-for-profit, nongovernment organisations that assist people, families and carers to manage the day-to-day activities associated with caring for someone with a terminal illness at home.

Grants are used to provide respite and carer support, help with transport and activities

of daily living.

Mr Merlino said it was an important boost for Fernlea House.

"We're supporting quality and compassionate end-of-life care that relieves pain and suffering, and gives more people the support they need to die where they choose," Mr Merlino said.

Old detectors an alarming prospect Smoke alarms that are more than a decade old could be better off in a museum than on a ceiling.

That’s the warning from CFA community safety manager Jude Kennedy.

He said out of date smoke alarms could be a liability in an emergency and all smoke alarms had a 10-year life span.

“We believe that some households have never replaced their smoke alarms and that is concerning,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Smoke alarms are designed to wake you when a fire starts to provide you and your family with the earliest possible warning to get out safely.

“If your smoke alarms aren’t working properly, you may miss that vital early warning sign that could save the lives of you and your family.”

He recommended installing hardwired 240 volt 10-year photoelectric smoke alarms with a long-life lithium battery in a tamper-proof chamber.

“When installed and maintained correctly these smoke alarms detect smoke the quickest, giving you more time to evacuate,” Mr Kennedy said.

“If you don’t have a working smoke alarm in your home and a fire occurs, you are four times more likely to die and 26 per cent more likely to suffer serious injuries.

“If you do choose to use a nine-volt battery smoke alarm, the battery will need to be replaced every year.

“A good reminder is doing it every year at the end of daylight savings or at the start of the new financial year.”

The new $1.5 million Warburton Police Station is taking shape on the hill, with a projected move-in date of mid-August.

The Warby police moved out of the portable which had been their home for decades late last year and have been sharing digs with their colleagues at Yarra Junction.

The new station is on the old site, central to the township, and retains one of the former station's big selling points - magnificent views of the mountains that cradle the town.

Yarra Ranges residents and visitors will be able to see the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018 exhibition close to home, as part of Council's Framed Photographic Festival.

The festival, which runs from 6-15 July, features events around the Yarra Ranges to coincide with three photographic exhibitions, including the NPPP. Curator at the National Portrait Gallery, Dr Chris Chapman, will launch the NPPP exhibition and the festival from 6-8pm on Friday, 6 July, with a speech at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale.

The exhibition features a selection of portraits submitted by photographers across Australia, with subjects of all ages and backgrounds.

Yarra Ranges Deputy Mayor, Tony Stevenson, said the exhibition would be the only chance for Victorians to see the NPPP finalists in person.

"Portraiture is a great way of learning people's stories, getting insight, seeing communities and the world a different way," Cr Stevenson said.

"The NPPP artists have photographed people from extremely varied backgrounds, from social housing residents to a former Prime Minister, and given each of them equal importance as a subject, regardless of where they come from.

"The Yarra Ranges Regional Museum will be one of four venues in Australia hosting this touring exhibition, so this is absolutely a mustsee for residents and visitors alike.

Film festival for the kids Hundreds of lantern parade festival-goers packed the Belgrave Cameo on 23 June, for the launch of the Lantern and Light International Children's Film Festival (LLICFF).

The inaugural and newly announced film festival was a new and exciting part of this year's Lantern Parade, and is the brainchild of the Ranges Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) Inc and its director, Rainsford Towner.

The not for profit group established 18 months ago runs drama, filmmaking and dance classes for children under the age of 18.

Mr Towner said LLICFF will be a festival of films made by young people, for young people.

The first official festival will be held in 2019, when three days of International and Australian short films, specifically made by young people will be selected and screened, with awards given to the best film in various categories.

"There are not many festivals like this around the world," Mr Towner said.

"You hear about a lot of children's film festivals, but most of them are films made for children not by them."

"Students will be part of the jury and be part of the selection panel.

"They'll be integrated into the experience themselves and take ownership for it ... it will be a great opportunity for budding film makers."

The festival will have a special regional focus with schools, and individual students will be encouraged to participate.

Mr Towner said international submissions will also be encouraged.

Speaking about his inspiration for the festival, Mr Towner said he wanted LLICFF to host stories from children in other cultures and from other ways of life.

This intercultural adventure would encourage empathy and understanding, and Mr Towner said nothing does that better than film - in particular - films made through the eyes of the children themselves.

"The motivation I have for seeing this happen is that there is an intercultural understanding that evolves from film," he said "Filmmaking does it so much better than any other creative medium."

The festival will primarily cater to local film-makers, though Mr Towner said a submission will open up in February, 2019 for international film-makers.

At the launch, supported by Yarra Ranges Council, Councillor, Mike Clarke, spoke of the great potential the festival has to offer budding film-makers in the region.

On the night a number of films were also screened at the Cameo including the film, 4 Dreams, which was created by local students and shown at the Mice Festival.

On the road to success Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) is introducing a pre-driving course for future drivers and their home-based instructors.

The Learner Driver Readiness Campaign is an accredited course that is designed to provide drivers and instructors with relevant, upto-date information, to ensure a pleasant and positive learning experience.

"The course aims to provide future drivers with familiarity of road rules, strategies for staying safe on the road, gaining confidence behind the wheel, introductions to local driving instructors, assistance in gaining a learner's permit and pathways into formal driving lessons," Mountain District Learning Centre Centre Manager Janet Claringbold said.

MDLC has partnered with Paul Kalra of RACV Drive School to mentor future drivers and their home-based instructors. Paul will conduct sessions over a four week period, every Wednesday from 15 August 2018, from 6pm to 8pm at the Boronia Library.

"Paul's extensive knowledge in this field, along with his calm and reassuring manner, will provide everyone involved with the confidence to follow a direct pathway from pre-learner to probationary driver whilst also providing information about owning your own car," Janet said.

"In addition, this course provides access to discounted driving lessons."

By Peter Douglas Fresh from the release of their acclaimed fourth album, 'Country Heart', country rock stars The Wolfe Brothers are ready to impress local audiences.

Tom and Nick Wolfe, along with guitarist Brodie Rainbird, will deliver a stack of favourite tunes, as well as tracks from their new album at a performance at York on Lilydale on Friday 3 August.

Hailing from Tasmania, the band first rose to prominence off the back of an appearance on 'Australia's Got Talent' in 2012, when they finished runners up.

Australian music legend Lee Kernaghan later invited them to tour with him and the rest, as they say, is history.

Electric guitar talent Rainbird said their recent album represented a positive evolution for the band.

"For this album, we changed the whole production process. We recorded in Australia, not Nashville," Rainbird said.

"This time, we never picked up a guitar until we were two weeks into the recording.

"We took the time to work on the parts of every song. It is not a massive departure from the past Wolfe Brothers records; it is just different, and the response from those who have heard the album has been incredibly encouraging for us."

The ban penned the album on a songwriting trip to Nashville last year, where they collaborated with numerous writers, with the objective to create a different sound and deliver songs that would hopefully take the band to the next level.

The album has not only won critical acclaim, but commercial as well, with the album peaking at No.9 on the ARIA chart.

"Basically it means that wherever we've been, there's nowhere as good as Australia."

Rainbird said it had been an incredible ride for him personally, after growing up in Tasmania idolising the likes of superstar singer-songwriter, Brad Paisley.

The band has toured extensively in the US, where they were warmly received in the huge US market.

Nick Wolfe said after three highly successful albums, the band felt ready to take a big step with number four.

"We really wanted to do something different, something that would reach a wider audience and something to show that we have

grown and matured as a band and as songwriters," says bassist Tom Wolfe.

"We are very proud of this album and we feel that we achieved what we set out to do and to see it debut at No.9 is a very satisfying and great start to the next chapter for the band."

Already, 2018 has involved a smashing show at Tamworth Country Music Festival and returning to the road with mate Lee Kernaghan for this 24th Anniversary Tour 'Boys from the Bush'.

Ant-Man and The Wasp retains the heart and humour of the first Ant-Man film, yet has a somewhat sloppy narrative.

Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) joins former allies Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope van Dyne/The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) on a mission to rescue Hope's mother Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the quantum realm, where she has been stranded for the past thirty years.

"Pulling the elements together, you get that special feeling again," Greedy said.

The set list is about 25 songs and only "four or five people don't know".

The band will be playing tracks from an EP it released about a year ago, Greedy said, plus a track that's only a couple of weeks old.

"Once they're in the door I think they'll be surprised at how many of the songs that they know," he said.

Greedy is looking forward to celebrating 40 years since Mental as Anything released its first recording, Mental As Anything - Plays At Your Party, later in the year.

It featured "the one that started it all off, The Nips are Getting Bigger".

"We're bring out a replica of the original vinyl EP. That'll be coming," Greedy said.

He said the band had played at Sooki Lounge about three times previously and he was keen to get back on the stage on Friday 13 July.

"It's got a nice ambiance," he said.

"It's got a certain cosiness to it.

"It's great to be not in town all the time, to get out ... " The band is based in Sydney but "we tend to be getting on a plane most Thursdays".

Today's line-up features Greedy on keyboards and vocals, Jacob Cook on drums and vocals, Peter Gray on bass and vocals, Martin Cilia on guitar, ad Craig Gordon on guitar and vocals.

Greedy is the only founding member still on the road, more than 40 years after Mental as Anything debuted at the Cellblock Theatre at East Sydney Tech.

Martin Plaza still joins with Greedy to write and produce new tracks.

Finals in their sights

Winter really set in on Saturday and tested some.

The log jam in Division 1 is still there and the top two in Division 2 have separated from the pack.

The rounds coming up will really separate the contenders from the pretenders.

The winners in senior football were Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen, Seville, Yea and Yarra Junction.

The A-grade netball winners were Warburton Millgrove, Belgrave, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Seville, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction.

The winners in the reserves were Olinda Ferny Creek, a draw between Healesville and Warburton, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Alexandra, Seville, Yea and Gembrook Cockatoo.

Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 14.24.108 d Belgrave 6.12.48 Olinda maintained top spot by percentage only following a win over Belgrave.

The first quarter was a reasonably even contest but Olinda still had a lead of 10 points at quarter time.

Olinda broke it open in the second, keeping Belgrave to just one behind and increasing the lead at half time to 25 points.

Belgrave gave some chase in the third but could not convert in front of goal, kicking 1.5, and Olinda kicked 5.7 to have a commanding lead at the final change.

Olinda had the ball on a string in the last and the margin could have been a lot more but for inaccuracy, as 11 of their 14 scoring shots in the last were behinds.

Healesville kicked 2.5 to 3.5 in the third and, to Warburton's credit, made them work for it.

The margin was 37 points at the last break.

A huge last quarter by Healesville with 7.8 to two straight and the game was done.

Wandin got the lead back in the second but kicked poorly with 2.5 to Monbulk's 1.2.

Wandin opened that margin in the third to 23 points and looked like they were home.

The last quarter was a tight 30 minutes with both sides only kicking one goal.

They dominated in the third, kicking 6.2 to 2.4 and the game was probably over.

Alexandra bounced back in the third, kicking four straight to Yarra Glen's 2.4 to be all square at the final change.

The last quarter, even though the scores may not indicate it, was close with only two points separating them late into the last.

Yarra Glen added a late goal to give them a 13-point win in the end.

It’s netball for all

By Casey Neill Netballers of all abilities can get on-court through a new program in Montrose.

Players from Healesville, Seville and Montrose have already signed up for the All Abilities Netball Program, which is designed to include people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Montrose Netball Club held a ‘come and try day’ on Friday 25 May and will hold free fortnightly netball skills clinics for all abilities from Friday 24 August, from 4pm to 5pm.

Secretary Sue Reynolds said the club found a lack of all-ability netball programs in the Yarra Ranges area.

She said a number of committee members were excited to be involved and had attended a Netball Victoria and Special Olympics All Abilities inclusive coaching forum to gather advice, to share best practices, new ideas and knowledge with other attendees, and participate in a hands-on clinic.

The club has also been liaising with Yarra Ranges Council, Melba Services and Netball Victoria.

“Looking to the future, it would be great to see an All Abilities netball tournament hosted locally,” Ms Reynolds said.

“Both my children helped out at the activity session and enjoyed themselves as well.

“It was great to see participants laughing, smiling and enjoying themselves.

“I also enjoyed interacting with the parents and carers afterwards while having afternoon tea.”

Participant Adam Forbes, from Healesville, said he was looking forward to attending again.

“Everyone put so much effort into the day and the ball games were great fun.

“Mum can’t believe how well I passed the ball.

“I have been practicing when I go to the gym.

“I would love to learn some more.

Volunteer Ellie Ingwersen said participating was one of the best things she’d ever done.

Monbulk Rangers’ Senior Women’s side notched up another win away.

They’d defeated Sandringham FC 4-1 the previous week, when Natalie Doolan scored two goals alongside one each from Gigi Collins and Alex Pocklington.

On Friday 6 July, the women played a catchup round match away against Brighton in the FFV Women’s State League 1 South East and won 3-1 in damp conditions.

The two wins put them in fourth position on the ladder and well-placed heading into the final six weeks of the season.

In the juniors, the Monbulk Rangers Winter Clinic at the club grounds in Old Emerald Road was well attended by 60 players on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 July, with coaches making the most of the school holidays to skill up Under-8 to Under-14 players.
