On 5 July, the flamboyant Dandenong foodie dished up a three-kilogram pork pie depicting a soaring goal and declaring the quarter-final score ‘England 3, Sweden 1’. Time will tell if he is telling a ‘pork pie’ so to speak - with the two sides due to face off at midnight on 8 July. Let’s hope for Mr Boyle’s sake, we don’t get a repeat of the famous British tabloid headline: Swedes 2, Turnips 1. His pies have proven prophetic in the past - correctly predicting Manchester United’s winning scoreline against Liverpool 20 years ago. Mr Boyle is confident that England, after so many false dawns, might actually win the World Cup. “I think we’ve got as good a chance as any.”

Road to disaster A small bag of cannabis was seized from his car. At those levels, Ken was deemed incapable of properly controlling a vehicle, police told the court. Ken told a police interview that he’d drank up to eight mixed vodka drinks that afternoon and night, as well as smoking a joint. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious injury, driving under the influence and possessing cannabis. A defence lawyer told the Dandenong hearing on 2 July that Ken stopped at the intersection and thought “there must be some fault with the road-light system”. “He took off and hit the motorcycle.” Just a week before the hearing, Ken had been discharged as a hospital psychiatric pa-

tient, the lawyer said. Ken had a long history of psychiatric problems. He’d been admitted to hospital at least six times since arriving from New Zealand 14 years ago, the lawyer told the court. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said it was a difficult case given the serious offences. She ordered a Forensicare report to assess Ken’s mental health issues for sentencing, as well as whether he had been prescribed the drugs at the time of the crash. She also requested whether Ken had been advised on the dangers of mixing alcohol with the medicine. Ken faced a minimum driving disqualification of two years, which would run from 2 July. He will be sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 October.

It started out as a boozy celebration of Seng Ken’s new job. The 35-year-old downed mixed vodkas with friends at Sin City strip club in Dandenong and with several medications in his system, he made the fateful decision to drive just before 1am on Saturday 19 November 2016. It was a course of action that seriously wounded another road user. It landed Ken in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court nearly two years later. Ken drove into the ‘No Entry - Buses Excepted’ area of Langhorne Street, egged on by a passenger in the back seat. He waited at the Lonsdale Street T-intersection for the bus traffic lights to turn green.

Running out of patience, he looked both ways, turning left slowly through a red ’B’ light. And he then heard a crash, and saw a motorcyclist flying through the air. Just beforehand, police on patrol saw the motorbike with its headlamp on. It was travelling at about 70-80 km/h in the 60km/h zone, weaving as if to warm up tyres, they say. Police rendered first aid to the rider, who has since remembered nothing of the crash. He spent up to 14 weeks in hospital, and endured two emergency surgeries. His toes, spine and femur were broken, his tibia crushed with damage to his foot, hip, sciatic nerve and knee. Ken’s blood-alcohol reading was 0.094. Forensic scientists also detected two types of anti-depressants and two anti-psychotic drugs.

Stabbing at home A 54-year-old woman has suffered serious stab wounds during a sexual assault in her own home in Doveton. Detectives from Victoria Police’s Sexual Crime Squad are investigating, with reports that multiple offenders may be involved in the attack around noon on July 2. Police are yet to release descriptions of the offenders, who remain at large.

The victim was treated by paramedics at her Rowan Drive semi-detached home for multiple stab wounds to her upper and lower body. Neighbours reportedly heard her screams. She was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition. Her condition has since been described as stable. A neighbour told Star News that detectives

Asylum seekers write a happier ending By Cam Lucadou-Wells English-language classes are providing a ray of hope for beleaguered asylum seekers. Facing the likely loss of federal income support, the best step forward for many is to improve their English - and in turn improve their job prospects. The latest crop of students proudly graduated at the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in Dandenong on 4 July. ASRC training co-ordinator Simon Dalton said the achievements brought brighter selfesteem for its graduates. "We find the effect is really profound. They get dressed up, they get photos with their teachers - it's a sign of success in their new home. "Sometimes success is not tangible because they're finding it hard to get work." The course is especially vital with up to 5000 Victorian asylum seekers facing desperation under federal Status Resolution Support Services cuts this month. They could lose their entire $247 weekly supplement - their equivalent to a NewStart allowance, Mr Dalton said. Greater Dandenong Council have openly advocated against the cuts, including flying a delegation to Canberra to meet with Immigration Minister Peter Dutton. "There's no fallback for many. There are real fears that people will be forced to be destitute," Mr Dalton said. "We are worried how people are going to cope." At any one time, the ASRC offer programs for about 100 members to get a basic worklevel English competency. It includes reading and writing, speaking and listening tuition for up to six hours a week. Mr Dalton said there was a misconception that many asylum seekers didn't want to learn English. "That's absolutely not our experience. "They see it as the key to everything." Without government funding, the centre has helped get 200 people into work in the past four years. Now it is starting to publish multi-lingual fliers to inform its members of the SRSS cuts. "It is going to create a great deal of uncertainty. We're just going to try to provide as many options as we can."

A home has been engulfed by fire near the corner of Bloomfield and Mather roads, Noble Park. Four fire trucks from Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale were called to the singlestorey timber dwelling about 1.46am on 4 July. The fire was under control by 1.58am, a CFA spokesman said. A building surveyor will investigate the site. The fire was not deemed suspicious. A woman has been robbed by a teenage boy during the afternoon peak in central Noble Park. The 33-year-old victim walked from the train station about 4.55pm on 25 June. On Mons Parade, a male youth has hit her hand in an attempt to snatch her bag, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say. As she struggled to retain her bag, her phone fell to the ground and was grabbed by the robber. Her phone case contained some cash and her license, as well as credit-cards which have not been used since the attack. The offender was described as 15-17 years old, Caucasian, skinny and about 163-165 centimetres. He wore a hoodie with white lines, black track pants and black shoes. Man stabbed in domestic fight A man has been hospitalised after a domestic stabbing in a home in Wilson Street, Dandenong. A 31-year-old man was taken to Dandenong Hospital with several stab wounds, including a deep cut to his hip. Dandenong police arrested a 35-year-old man at the scene. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Stolen car incinerated at creek A stolen vehicle has been found ablaze near Dandenong Creek. The white Toyota, which had been taken from Lynbrook, was discovered off Kyla Avenue, Dandenong about 11 pm on 29 June. A car has been stolen while its owners slept during a home burglary in Craig Street, Noble Park. A VW hatchback was stolen - as well as a wallet from inside the house - sometime after 10.15pm on 25 June, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives believe. A man allegedly used a card from the wallet to buy items at a 7-11 store at Keysborough about 3.30am the next morning, as well as a BP and a Caltex outlet. Police released an image of a man visiting the 7-11 store who they'd like to speak to about the offences. Dumper alert in Lyndhurst By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have called for the public to keep an eye out for illegal dumpers, particularly in Glasscocks Road, Lyndhurst. About 3.25am on 1 July, passers-by spotted a white Holden utility that had been set alight by the roadside. It was later reported stolen, police say. Detective Sergeant Craig West, of Greater Dandenong CIU, said dumped stolen cars and rubbish were a "regular occurrence".

Even glassware and chemicals from clan labs had been disposed in the area, he said. "We ask for factory workers to be vigilant in the area. If they see something suspicious, they should contact police." Greater Dandenong Council run various campaigns on litter and illegal dumping - with an updated page on its website to report offenders. Last year, the council received more than 4000 reports from the public. It issued 526 in-

fringements and prosecuted seven offenders in court. "Council asks that the public remains vigilant and reports any littering or illegal dumping," acting city, planning, design and amenity director Peter Shelton said. "Council proactively patrols streets and ensures that instances of littering and illegal dumping are thoroughly investigated as a priority." He advised people to provide as much in-

formation as possible for illegal dumping such as a description of items, time, date and location and any identifying details of the people and vehicles involved. "If people do not witness the dumping occurring but think they may have information that might assist in identifying offenders we would also like to hear from them," Mr Shelton said. Free sanitary products boost from the Youth Parliament By Marie Trevithick Victoria could be a step closer to having free sanitary products available in government buildings, with the Gleneagles Secondary College team passing their bill in Youth Parliament on 2 July. The team of VCE Global Politics students Uzma Janjua, Oznur Ulusan, Maya Ghassali, Alishbah Younus, Yosra Mohamed and Tali Mishali were thrilled when their bill was passed by the Youth Legislative Council. "We're so immensely proud of ourselves," Ms Ghassali said. "We were really nervous at the start. The support of the chamber and the government side was amazing." Their proposal, the Public Availability of Sanitary Products Bill 2018, aims to ensure all women across Victoria have access to pads and tampons when they are required. It gives women access to 12 free sanitary products once a month. "Women need access to sanitary products for the sake of basic dignity and in order to prevent the use of unhygienic materials, which

It wasn't smooth sailing for the team, however, with two amendments being made to the bill before it was passed. Newhaven College, from Phillip Island, requested that a governing body be established to oversee the free product distribution, and that one of the Bill's clauses be rephrased. The Bill will now be passed onto the relevant government minister for consideration.

Children aged up to seven years with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds were invited to the Welcome Baby to Country event. It was jointly run by Monash Health, Monash University and Greater Dandenong Council. Each child received a commemorative certificate and gift. NAIDOC Week officially runs 8-15 July.

It’s not quite the bike path to nowhere, but that’s how it looks to keen cyclists itching to use an under-construction shared-trail. For several weeks, the trail aligned with the rail line between Westall and Springvale has been fenced off - despite literally just metres of concrete needed to finish the job. The Level Crossing Removal Authority says the WestallDandenong section - despite appearances - is about 60 per cent complete. “We’ll be opening the path when it is safe to do so,” senior project manager Matthew Williamson said. “At the moment construction vehicles still need to regularly cross the path as part of works to complete the trail and to carry out landscaping on the new open space through Noble Park.” When finished, a continuous 17-kilometre shared path will link Monash University, Caulfield to the Eastlink Trail, Dandenong.

A further free NAIDOC Week event for children will be staged at Gloria Pyke Netball Stadium at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong on 10 July, 11am-3pm. It is run by Southern Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency and the Dandenong and District Aborigines Cooperative. Lost-and-found Here’s a reminder to pick up after yourself in the bedroom. A woman allegedly visited a “friend” in Hallam, leaving behind zip-lock bags of a “white-powdered”drug on a bedside table. A few days later, police carried out a search warrant of the friend’s home, seizing three grams of the drugs on the bedroom table. Her friend was arrested and charged over the matter. A month later, the woman’s solicitor sends a letter to police stating that she confessed to the crime. She was a stay-at-home mum who had got a night off and was “killing time”at the friend’s house before going out with a girlfriend, her lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 July. She picked the drugs up at a party, having never used them for seven-and-a-half years, the lawyer said something that the judge said was “incredibly unlikely and implausible”. The lawyer insisted she was a “truly rehabilitated person”. She was given a six-month good-behaviour bond. The friend’s charges were dropped.

Ice trucker off the road An ice-using truckie towing about 45 tonnes of dirt has pleaded guilty to speeding and tailgating cars in a road-works zone of Monash Freeway last year. Police had observed Tony Markovski driving a tip-truck hauling two tipping-trailers merging eastbound onto the freeway from Stud Road about 12.55pm on 15 November, a court heard. His truck crossed quickly from the freeway's left to the far right lane, at an estimated speed of 90 km/h in an 80 km/h road-works zone, police claimed. As police followed further along the freeway, they detected Markovski's speed at 102 km/h under the same speed restrictions. He was observed not signalling as he over-

took traffic, as well as tail-gating two vehicles, the court was told. Due to a lack of stopping lanes at the time, police were unable to safely intercept Markovski until Clyde Road. Markovski didn't provide a licence. He told police he didn't know he was only licensed to tow up to 9 tonnes - well under the estimated 45-tonne load. Methamphetamine was found in his system, though he denied to police he took drugs, the court heard. He told Dandenong Magistrates Court on 2 July that his only issue was the speeding charge; his truck was speed limited to 95 km/h. Magistrate Pauline Spencer fined Markovski $1200 with conviction and disqualified him from driving for three months.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 11 July 1918 Proposed Dandenong High School On Saturday a deputation waited upon the Cranbourne Shire Council in regard to the proposed high school at Dandenong. The deputation comprised of Cr Abbott, Messrs Talbot, McAlpin, Cruickshank and McAfee. Cr Abbott and Mr Talbot were deputed to put the case on behalf of the deputation, and both performed the duty imposed upon them in a most capable manner. The benefit to residents within the Cranbourne shire boundary was clearly shown, if the high school is established at Dandenong, therefore the deputation felt justified in appealing for assistance in financing the scheme, which would provide educational facilities not at present obtainable by fami-

20 years ago 13 July 1998 Plan to boost police paddocks Dandenong Police Paddocks will become a thriving regional park under plans announced last week by Parks Victoria. A five-year Future Direction Plan for the 500 hectare paddocks will be undertaken by the Police Paddocks Advisory Committee and the community. Parks Victoria's chief ranger Ms Lisa Court said the open space of the paddocks had become increasingly significant because of the rapid growth in Melbourne's South-East. The reserve also had significant botanic

value. It acted as a buffer between Churchill National Park and formed part of the wildlife corridor that followed Dandenong Creek. The project co-ordinator, Ms Frances Horsley, said the reserve was an untapped recreational asset. Plans for picnic facilities and walking tracks were under way.

His public life included serving as a committee member and life member of many sporting clubs, work for many cultural groups, Noble Park Progress Association membership, a Dandenong and District Hospital life membership, and tireless work for the Red Cross and Comforts Fund in war time.

He was a talented violinist who played with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and various dance bands, and was a member of the Communist Party for more than 40 years. Paddy was associated with the Noble Park Public Hall for 47 years as a trustee, 17 of those as trust chairman. He opened Koala Gym Club there in the 1970s. The hall was built in 1925. Greater Dandenong manages the centre and leases the land from the owners - the residents of Noble Park. The community elects five trustees to look after the asset. The public hall team said Paddy's greatest hope was that future trustees ensured the guidelines the pioneers laid down were adhered to, and that the people retained control of the hall for educational, charitable, recreational and cultural needs.

This week the Journal looks at Noble Park's Paddy O'Donoghue Centre. AJ Paddy O'Donoghue was born on the Kalgoorlie goldfields in 1913. A website dedicated to the Noble Park Public Hall, now part of the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre in Buckley Street, published a tribute to Paddy. It said he moved to the suburb in 1924 after his father accepted a job at a local bakery. Paddy left school in 1929 at age 16 to take over his ailing father's work in the bakehouse and became the family's breadwinner. He was the oldest of five children - Sylvia, Eva, Elvia and Jack. Five years later he scraped together $200 during The Great Depression for a deposit to

As tax time 2018 kicks off the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has profiled the five most common mistakes and the personalities most likely to have tax time troubles. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said it’s often simple mistakes and misunderstandings that trip people up. “While we know most people want to get it right, our audits and reviews show that there are five main areas where taxpayers are most likely to get it wrong.” The top five mistakes include taxpayers who leave out some of their income, claim deductions for personal expenses, forget to keep receipts or records of their expenses, claim for something they never paid for and claim personal expenses for rental properties. Ms Anderson says many of the mistakes are avoidable and there are a few things taxpayers can do to make sure their tax time experience is stress-free. “Know what you can legitimately claim. There are three golden rules for work-related expenses. You must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed, it must be directly related to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it,” Ms Anderson said. “This tax time we will be paying close attention to claims for private expenses like home to work travel, plain clothes, and private phone calls. We will also be paying attention to people who are claiming standard deductions for expenses they never paid for.” Tax can sometimes be tricky, but it’s not tricky to keep good records. “Around half of the adjustments we make are because the taxpayer had no records, or they were poor quality. Yet it’s so easy to keep your records, using the myDeductions tool in the ATO app. Just take a photo, record a few details and then at the end of the year upload the information to your agent or to myTax.” Another tip is to include all your income. “A temp job, cash jobs, capital gains on cryptocurrency, or money earned from the sharing economy is all income that must be declared. We are constantly improving our data matching tools and even a one-off pay-

cation and assistance, as well as reviews and audits. This year we are expecting to make contact with more than one million taxpayers either directly or through their agents,” Ms Anderson said. Finally, if you make a mistake, don’t panic. “We know people sometimes make mistakes or forget to include something on their return. If you’re in that situation, try to fix it as soon as you can to minimise any interest and penalties. Either contact your agent or lodge an amendment online. “Remember: Whether you use a tax agent or lodge it yourself, you are responsible for the claims you make. At its Council meeting of 12 June 2018, Greater Dandenong City Council endorsed a new place name for the reserve currently located at 43-67 National Drive, Dandenong South (currently known as National Reserve). Council is proposing to name the reserve ‘Frank Pellicano Reserve’ after well-known property developer Frank Pellicano. Frank (deceased) had a long history with Greater Dandenong and in the late 1990’s purchased over 160 hectares of swampland and cow paddocks in Dandenong South on an instinct that Dandenong would become a pivotal area for industry due to its location and accessibility. Within this land, two prime business estates were established which now provide approximately 2000 jobs within Greater Dandenong. Frank also worked with traditional owners of the land to locate and preserve any artefacts of significance during development and worked to transplant indigenous species of flora from other parts of the estates into the conservation area we now know as National Reserve. Frank Pellicano was a well-respected person and businessman throughout Dandenong. In the area in which he was most active, he has left the legacy of how business development and a respect for nature and the environment can work together for future generations to both enjoy and benefit from economically.

Hustwaite’s Dandy dream By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays are absolutely flying in season 2018. Sitting on top of the ladder, they're the talk of TAC Cup footy. Co-captain Campbell Hustwaite - who shares the reigns with Mitch Riordan - gave an insight into the Rays stunning season thus far. "It's probably a credit to how deep we are as a team. We've had players come in and out, but we've also been able to bring players in who have played roles just as well, if not better, than some of the players that have been out," he said. The depth of the team has been challenged greatly throughout the season due to varying reasons and with the Under 18 National Championships being played recently, the Rays have had to play without a handful of their best players for a portion of the season. Bailey Williams, Zac Foot, Toby Bedford, Mitch Riordan and Sam Fletcher have all missed a number of games because of Vic Country commitments, while Riley Bowman, Hayden Young and Will Hamill are among others to have missed TAC Cup games due to representing Vic Country. Hustwaite knows better than most what the Rays incredible development program can do for players and this is ultimately driving team success. "The way the place runs, the coaches just want to make every individual better," he said. "It's obviously helped me and every other player on the list and individual progress benefits the whole team." Running out as captain of the Stingrays is something that Hustwaite doesn't take for granted. He says leadership came naturally to him after captaining sides in juniors at Rosebud. "Coming in as a bottom-ager, playing pretty early in the season, I didn't feel the need to

Neo Cleo trumps Tornado, follows on from a great win By Mick Floyd Superstar Tornado Tears may have been the headline act but it was the unheralded Neo Cleo that set the time standard in the heats of the Group 2 McKenna Memorial at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Following on from a brilliant 29.50 win over 515 metres the previous Thursday, Neo Cleo was equally dominant when stepping up to 595 metres, leading all of the way to score in 33.94. Not only was the win the fastest of the night, it also took more than two lengths off her previous best time for the trip much to the delight of trainer Robert Neocleous. "I've bred a lot of litters over the years but she is very special," he said. "She's got that much talent, but she does her best when she's out on the lure. From the 595m boxes you have to come out otherwise they can block you in. Fortunately she's jumping well at the moment." Series favourite Tornado Tears will line up in his sixth group final at just his 22nd career start after winning the night's opening heat in 34.12. Peter Riley was content with his run following his record breaking campaign in Brisbane a fortnight earlier. "We didn't ask a lot him last week. Three weeks in a row over 700m in Brisbane was a big ask and he's not a good traveller on the plane, he didn't enjoy the trip," Riley explained. "But he's been jumping out of his skin during the week. We gave him a couple of walks up the bush and some light work, so with a clean run next week anything is possible." Interestingly it was the kennel's second finalist, Big Bang Tears, which Riley was particularly excited about. After falling behind early, Heatherton dug deep and a four-goal to zero final term saw the side record a 9.15 (69) to 8.8 (56) win. Benjamin Clark-Henry and Reagan Maddaford were sublime in the win for Heatherton. Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills played out a classic in tough conditions at Robert Booth Reserve.

Fletcher were sublime all day. Matthew Cumming’s ability to read the ball and take intercept marks in the defensive half was stellar, making it near impossible for the Falcons to get any offensive flow going. An impressive 11 individual goal-kickers once again proved the Rays’ attack is far from one-dimensional.

The Dandenong Stingrays made it six wins on the trot with a comprehensive win over the Geelong Falcons on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at Shepley Oval. As has been the story all season long, the Stingrays’ depth and willingness to work for one another was the difference. The Falcons came out with plenty of hunger and were set up well behind the ball and the Rays found it tough going for the opening 10 minutes of the game. Despite the Falcons’ dominance, they were unable to convert on the scoreboard and when Riley Bowman put through the first major of the day at the 12-minute mark, the Rays had the lead. The second half of the first term saw the Stingrays really assert their dominance around the contest as they scored two more goals to hold a 19-point lead at quarter time. Just 20 seconds into the second term, Matthew Cottrell slotted a beautiful running goal to extend the Rays’ lead. Dandenong looked to be running away with the game, but Geelong pushed hard and scored three goals in three minutes midway through the term to cut the Rays’ lead to just 13 points. The Rays didn’t panic though and responded well in the latter stages of the first half as Jarryd Barker booted two majors to have Dandenong well-placed at half time, 7.6 (48) to 3.5 (23). The likes of captain Campbell Hustwaite, Toby Bedford and Sam Fletcher were getting plenty of the ball in the clinches. The third quarter saw conditions get even worse as the wind picked up and rain started to fall more consistently. It didn’t worry the Stingrays though as they put on four more goals and kept the Falcons to just one.
