A Berwick man has been reunited with his ride-on-mower and trailer within days - and it was all thanks to the power of social media.

Tony White said he was gutted to find his work equipment missing outside his Bemersyde Drive home at 7.30am on Friday 29 June.

“That’s my living obviously. When that sort of stuff disappears what do you do?” he said.

tured the moment thieves allegedly hooked up his trailer and ride-on-mower to their car before driving off about 5.20am. “(It was) parked on the street, one time I didn’t have a lock on it.”

“What do you do? I could be jumping up and down and getting angry and bits and pieces. I just rang the police,” he said.

With the help of family, Mr White said he also posted a post of Facebook’s Casey Crime Page and Pakenham Crime Page in the hope of

Waste charges trickle up

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has slightly dampened a proposed waste charge rise in its $441 million final budget for 2018-19.

In good news for ratepayers, the council modestly trimmed its charge down from $330 in the draft budget to $326 after negotiations with its recycling contractor.

The charge rise instead amounts to $24 one of the lowest rises in Victoria in response to the recycling industry's export crisis.

As expected, rates will rise in line with the 2.25 per cent rates cap.

Late budget revisions included $170,000 for a portable building at Merinda Park Learning

and Community Centre.

Funding was reallocated from a project at Essex Park Community Place to Barry Simon Pavilion, to take advantage of a state grant.

However, the Alliance for Gambling Reform failed to attract a $25,000 contribution to its anti-pokies campaign, despite an in-person submission by director Reverend Tim Costello.

The alliance is backed by several Melbourne councils, including Knox, Greater Dandenong and Monash.

Meanwhile, Casey Basketball Association still hopes to avert a proposed steep hike in fees for V-League games at Casey Stadium.

Under the proposal, the CBA claimed that

the court hire charges for next Big V season would jump from $11,340 to $49,850 - a 339 per cent rise.

CBA general manager Tammy Bower said the association was meeting with Casey and the venue's manager YMCA to strike a compromise.

"At the end of the day, we don't think the (proposed hire fee) will go ahead. If it did, we'd have to look at cutting back things, or price increases."

The final budget retains its $122 million capital works program including two family and community centres in Clyde North, a districtlevel soccer pavilion at Jack Thomas Reserve and building a 'missing link' of Glasscocks Road.

The council allocated $4.4 million towards its continued digitisation.

In adopting the budget on 26 June, Casey mayor Geoff Ablett reiterated the growth council's concerns about an emerging funding gap.

"This is the first budget in which the cumulative pinch of rate capping is clear and is impacting decision making.

"This budget represents Council reaching a tipping point where the future will be characterised by the increasingly difficult job of bridging the gap between the infrastructure and services the community expect and what Council can afford to deliver."

Comedian Tommy Little said he loved everything about Lifeview.

"I've also never officially opened anything before, so this is an absolute treat and honour", Mr Little added.

Casey Council is calling on the State Government to help fund eight critical community infrastructure projects.

The council has applied almost $16 million in grants from the government's Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) to get the projects underway.

It has sought $1.83 million from the GSF to develop a Cranbourne West Community Hub and Town Square with council set to contribute $1.83 million.

It is also hopes to secure $6.49 million for a Casey Fields Regional Community Soccer Precinct and $1.57 million to develop a District Soccer/Cricket Recreation Reserve at Selandra Estate.

Council is also seeking $442,000 for a South Gippsland Highway Streetscape Renewal project within the Tooradin Township and $1.65 million for a District AFL/ Cricket/ Netball Recreation Reserve Development project at Kilora Estate in Clyde North.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said council will be applying for the maximum amount possible of $10 million through the GSF. He said it was a much-needed funding source for growth areas like Casey to keep up with growing infrastructure demands.

"As our population increases on average by 13,000 people every year, we are faced with a significant challenge in trying to keep pace with the infrastructure that our communities deserve and need," said Cr Ablett.

"Since the introduction of rate capping, keeping up the infrastructure and service needs of our growing community has gotten progressively harder. We now rely heavily on funding streams such as the GSF to assist us in keeping up with demand."

Cr Ablett added that council was pleased to receive funding for seven out of our eight applications last year.

"We hope that we are again successful in this year's pool so that we can get on with delivering these important projects for our community," he said.

A hard waste ‘first’ rate of around 10 per cent, while an additional 65 per cent will be turned into processed engineered fuel.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said this is a huge step forward for Council and the movement away from landfill will revolutionise the way Council manages its waste.

"This move will achieve huge environmental outcomes for the City of Casey," he said.

"The processed engineered fuel made from hard waste materials will be used in cement kilns as a replacement for fossil fuels, which is a fantastic outcome.

The City of Casey will also look at alterna-

tives to landfill by exploring higher technology as part of its regular kerbside bin collections.

Casey residents can book up to two hard rubbish collections per property each year and should contact Council to arrange a time.

Items collected include materials such as mattresses and bases, car tyres, electrical appliances and furniture.

Drone laws stalled

Casey Council has put its controversial drone laws on further hold, pending a review.

The local law requires people launching or landing drones on or from private property to obtain a council permit.

After an outcry from drone flyers late last year, the council suspended the law from 20 February until a report came back on 30 June.

That date has been pushed out further, with doubts surfacing over the law's enforceability.

Casey safer communities manager Caroline Bell said the suspension continued until the council report came back to the council for consideration.

"During this time, Council is not enforcing this clause of the local law."

Ms Bell said the council had intended to protect Casey residents' privacy and "minimise nuisance caused by inappropriate use of drones".

"Despite some crossover with the (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) regulations, Council was concerned as to whether CASA would have the scope, capacity and resourcing available to oversee this at a local level."

Casey's legal advice found it was likely that a court would find that the local law duplicated CASA's regulations, according to a council report in February.

"This does not invalidate the Local Law. "It simply casts doubt on the enforceability of (the local law) in its current form."

Phil Dunbabin, of Melbourne Drone Flyers group, said members had a "candid, co-operative and constructive" meeting with council officers last month.

The council would require "large and unmanageable" resources to police the issue, Mr Dunbabin said.

"Education to the public and drone community should be a priority to councils, rather than policing and enforcement."

Shots fired at home A number of shots were fired at a house in a Narre Warren South during the early hours of Saturday 30 June.

Two adults and two children were in the house at the time the shots were fired just after midnight. They were not injured.

Police were called to the Berwick Springs Promenade property at 12.30am.

They found one bullet had penetrated the front of the house while a second bullet damaged a car parked near the nature strip.

Investigators are trying to determine if the shots were fired from a car or by someone on foot.

Casey Council has taken "a huge step forward" that will see more hard waste items recycled.

In what is set to be "a massive reduction in materials going to landfill," Casey Council will be the first council to roll out a fleet of new electronic compactor trucks in collecting hard waste by January 2019.

It comes as Casey Council signed a new contract with WM Waste Management this week - which will start in august - and see only five per cent of Casey's hard waste now being sent to landfill.

Casey Council is asking for public submissions on the proposal for the renaming of a substantial part of Pioneers Park in Berwick, to honour former councillor Mick Morland.

Like many in Casey we believe former Cr Morland’s huge contribution to his community in Casey, both in council and in Rotary, should be permanently acknowledged in some way by the City of Casey, and on the face of it , a park named after him would be a fitting memorial, but not Pioneers Park.

We are strongly opposed to the splitting of Pioneers Park in any proportions and any renaming, at all.

We believe that the naming of the former Berwick Primary School No 40, site as “Pioneers Park” was to recognise the contribution made by our early forebears to the district and the proposal had wide scale council and community support, resulting in its use and naming.

I also recognise that council and councillors do many good things right, but in this instance, we believe that they are wrong.

It is to be hoped that in calling for public comment, that in this instance it does not become a regrettable case, of going through the motions of so called community input and then going ahead with council’s proposed intention regardless of the validity of any opposing view.

We know that we are not alone in calling, in the strongest possible terms, for council to find another way to recognise Mick Morland’s contribution, and leave all of Pioneers Park intact, including the name. and that is the way it should remain.

I have also a copy of a letter that my father wrote to the Rotary Club of Berwick on receiving the Paul Harris Sapphire award in which he says it (the award) came as a ‘total surprise”. He goes on to say “I never expected to receive such a high award for my services to the club and community. Particularly my recent endeavour to have the state school site for the pioneer park which was a joint effort with great help from George Wilson, a former member of the club, ex-Councillor Norma McCausland, Ross Bradbury and many other dedicated helpers.

They all worked extremely hard over a sevenyear period and it would not have been possible without them”.

Seven years the community fought for the park before it became a reality.

It was the Berwick community who fought, in a very tangible way, for the acquisition of the site which has been aptly named Pioneers Park. The name, as can be seen on the plaque on the rock in the park, honours the citizens who supported the acquisition of the land.

No individual’s name should be ever considered for Pioneers Park. The name of the park should not, ever, be altered.

Public spaces and monuments are named to honour people, communities or events. To rename them is to dishonour those people, communities or events.

I do hope that any thought of a name change to Pioneers Park (or any part of it) will be reconsidered, that the history of the acquisition of the site and community support for it will be remembered and Councillor Mick Morland will be honoured in some other way.

The Pioneers Park was not named on a whim, or because no-one could think of a better name. It was named to honour and remember not just the pioneers of Berwick, but the citizens of Berwick who fought for the acquisition of the land and the creation of the park.

Apart from individual members of the community, some of whom donated significant sums, community groups also donated to the fund, started by my parents and Mr Wilson, to prove to council the extent of community support, for the purchase of the primary school site, for a park in central Berwick. A significant donor was the Akoonah Park Committee which raised an amount, which I recollect and have had confirmed, in the order of $50,000.

I hold a copy of a letter from my father to the City of Casey in which he writes: “I suggested we raise $100,000, with 10 donors at $10,000 each and with $10,000 each from Helen and I, and $10,000 from George (Wilson]), George and I managed to raise $140,000 in two weeks. We banked it and gave Norma McCausland a bank statement to present to council.” And later in the letter: “We called a public meeting with a full house attending to support fund-raising where a committee was formed and some $50,000 was raised, including $1000 from the Historical Society.” No doubt many who attended that meeting are among your readers today.

The plaque at the Pioneers Park records that a total of $241,000 was raised by further contributions from the general public (I mistakenly said in my letters to the star News Group and in my submission to council that it was around a quarter of a million dollars, still, not far off).

The plaque also states: “The choice of the word Pioneers is to recognise those generous citizens who supported the acquisition of this land - they are the pioneers of this era who should be recognised by the generations who follow”.

The Pioneers Park is now established in Berwick purely as a result of a concerted campaign by the citizens of Berwick. The amount berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Parklea’s drive to help needy The Parklea Winter Food Drive is on again this year, with even more locations to donate at throughout the Cardinia Shire.

Now in its third year, the annual Food Drive provides members of the community with the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items to help fill the pantries of disadvantaged families.

This year Parklea is aiming to reach even more families with a number of local businesses volunteering as drop off locations.

During July and August, local residents can drop non-perishable food to Club Officer, Montessori Beginnings Child Care at Timbertop Estate, Cardinia Life (Aligned Leisure), Arena Cafe at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop Sales Suite.

"With the support of local businesses this year, we hope to be able to provide more families with much needed food during the colder months," said Jarod Mills, sales and marketing manager at Parklea Developments.

Land prices have rocketed in Casey and Cardinia to be the most expensive in any of Melbourne’s growth suburbs.

Land in Casey is nearly $100,000 dearer than than in Mitchell Shire.

Casey has a median land price of $375,000.

The price of land shot up 27.6 per cent in the 12 months to March 2018.

Cardinia is not far behind, with a median land price of $344,000, an astonishing 41.2 per cent increase over the same period.

The research, collated for Oliver Hume, shows many first home buyers are priced out of the new home market.

In the three months to the end of March, first home buyers accounted for 45 per cent of purchasers, having dropped steadily from 50 per cent at the same time last year.

Oliver Hume head of national research George Bougias said the growth rate over the last 12 months was unlikely to be replicated over the next year.

“Overall, price growth is now softening as affordability constraints become more important and competition intensifies between developers,“ Mr Bougias said.

“Historically, there has also been a strong relationship between residential land and established markets. With the established market now slowing it is to be expected that the greenfield market will also moderate over the short to medium term.“ Parklea manager of sales and marketing Jarod Mills said price growth in Cardinia Shire was driven by a lack of available land.

“Casey and Cardinia combined used to contribute around 35-40 per cent of land sales in the growth corridor, however recent data published by RPM (Real Estate Group) show that this now only attributes 15 per cent - the same as Surf Coast and Geelong. It is a fading growth corridor.“

He said projects were taking far too long to make it to market and as an example he cited Parklea’s Pakenham East development. The Precinct Structure Plan for Pakenham East has taken nine years.

Mr Mills predicted prices in Cardinia would remain “exceptionally strong“ as demand continued to outweigh supply. However, he predicted growth would moderate.

“The prices through Casey and Cardinia are having a positive flow-on effect for towns like Drouin and Warragul and areas like Wonthaggi where land prices are significantly more affordable,“ Mr Mills said.

Ian Harris, a director with KR Peters Real Estate, which is handling the sale of The New Bloom at Clyde North, said the employment precinct slated for land on Cardinia Road, which is expected to deliver 18,000 jobs, was helping drive demand.

“People are starting to hear about the employment precinct. They want to live close to jobs. They don’t want to commute to the CBD.“ Mr Harris said land was released at The New Bloom three weeks ago and 43 out of 47 blocks sold on the day.

He said communities of buyers with Indian and Sri Lankan heritage were snapping up land at The New Bloom and other estates.

“They want to live near people they know, they want their kids to go to school together.

They are creating their own communities.

“We have sold four stages so far and at every stage we have found the same thing.“ Mr Harris said in his opinion prices had stablised and buyers were unlikely to see the huge price increases of last year.

“At one stage prices were going up $30,000 to $40,000 a stage. It has plateaued a bit.

“Builders are crying out for land and developers are trying to keep up.“

A drug-toking video-gamer has pleaded guilty to brandishing an imitation firearm in public as well as excessively speeding in a car three times in one day.

Ted Daniel Mcdowell, 21, said he was returning the weapon to a mate's place when he was arrested near wetlands off Willow Drive, Hampton Park on 8 April, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

There they got stoned, played the shoot'em-up video game Tour of Duty and "mucked around" in the backyard.

He was carrying two grams of cannabis in a ziplock bag.

A learner driver, Mcdowell was also clocked at 168 km/h in a 100 km/h zone by an Eastlink speed camera at Dandenong Bypass on 12 January, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

On the same day, his car was snapped at 149 km/h in an 80km/h zone by a Dandenong Road speed camera, and 110 km/h in a 60 km/h zone by a Heatherton Road speed camera.

Mcdowell said in a police interview that his brother and mates often borrowed the car, but didn't supply specific details.

The day after, he crashed into another car as he attempted to swerve around it at the Pound Road-Princes Highway intersection lights.

After an argument with the victim, he sped off in his car down South Gippsland Highway.

On 15 and 20 January, he was intercepted without an experienced driver or L plates in the car. On the latter occasion, police found a bong and 0.4 grams of cannabis.

On Australia Day, he drove away at a fast speed from a 7-11 car park in Noble Park - despite a police car directing him to stop with flashing lights and sirens.

"He was very busy in January", magistrate Barry Schultz mused on 2 July.

Defence lawyer Farah Banihali said the accused's homelessness, long-term cannabis use and mental health issues contributed to his "prolific" offending.

He wasn't able to afford the release of his since-impounded car, the court was told.

Mr Schultz noted that Mcdowell continued "doing what he's doing" even during bail.

Any one of the speeding incidents could have led to death or serious injury, Mr Schultz said.

"Whether there is homelessness or not, he doesn't appear to have insight for the consequences that follow from that kind of driving."

Mcdowell was however a young person and shouldn't be jailed, Mr Schultz said.

He was sentenced to up to 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community corrections order.

The supervised order included treatment, drug testing and a road-trauma awareness course.

He was disqualified from driving for two years.

House up in flames

By Brendan Rees An abandoned homestead has been gutted by a fire in Clyde North on Wednesday 27 June.

Police say there was substantial damage to the Soldiers Road property. No one was inside at the time of the blaze.

The house is believed to be located opposite Hillcrest Christian College and left in a derelict state.

An assembly of CFA fire trucks, including a breathing apparatus van, were called out from Frankston, Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Clyde, Upper Beaconsfield, Officer, and Narre Warren about 11.05pm.

The fire was brought under control within half an hour. Police say a passer-by noticed the blaze at the house and called triple zero.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was understood the house was abandoned and pending development.

Berwick CFA volunteer firefighter Peter O'Beth said his crew arrived to find half the house - believed to be an old homestead engulfed in flames.

Nearly 60 firefighters fought the intense fire which had been reduced to rubble, Mr O'Beth said.

"We were relaying water all the way down

the track from truck-to-truck," he said.

"Once we knocked it down there was a lot of work to salvage, shifting tiles and wood to put out hot spots."

"I checked the place out and was 99.9 per cent sure there was no asbestos so didn't have to worry about that."

One-punch husband seeks retreat

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 54-year-old Hampton Park man punched his wife of 11 years in the nose, enraged by her announcing she was having an affair, a court was told.

The argument flared in their master bedroom about 8.20am on 12 March. After being struck by his closed fist, she fled the house and called police two hours later.

She sought medical treatment for resultant bruising and swelling.

"I actually punched her," the man told police.

"It was the first time I've done this."

Woman stabbed in her own home

A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates' Court that an argument ensued after the woman told the accused she was seeing someone else.

The man "lashed out" after the victim hurled a book at him, then a pair of glasses that cut him between the eyes, the lawyer said.

The "extremely ashamed" man intended to hit her, but not in the nose.

"He loves his wife," the lawyer told the court.

"He has struggled with the idea that their relationship is failing."

He had since seen a psychologist for anger

management, anxiety and depression. He'd embarked on meditation as well as a 10-day retreat to relieve his anxiety, the court heard.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer sentenced the man to a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction, noting his remorse and lack of criminal history.

He was ordered to complete his recentlycommenced men's behaviour change program.

In relationships, we feel lots of emotions like hurt and pain, Ms Spencer said.

It is not acceptable to express anger in a way that harms or scares someone else, she said.

A 54-year-old woman has suffered serious stab wounds during a sexual assault in her own home in Doveton.

Detectives from Victoria Police’s Sexual Crime Squad are investigating, with reports that multiple offenders may be involved in the attack around noon on July 2.

Police are yet to release descriptions of the offenders, who remain at large.

The victim was treated by paramedics at her Rowan Drive semi-detached home for multiple stab wounds to her upper and lower body.

Neighbours reportedly heard her screams.

She was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

Her condition has since been described as stable.

A neighbour told Star News that detectives sourced their CCTV footage.

Her CCTV cameras were installed after several nearby break-ins and thefts, including a car from their driveway.

Before the latest incident, however, she had felt safe.

“It’s a bit scary for us to go out there. God knows where these people are heading.”

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Stephen Everett, Secretary and tutor of The Berwick Pipers Inc.

At what age do you start playing the bagpipes and what do you love most about it?

I started when I was 14 and I have experienced, and marvelled at their universal acceptance around the world. I have played my pipes all over Australia, PNG, Indonesia, NZ, Edinburgh; as well as in a helicopter at 10,000 feet with doors open while wearing a parachute.

We considered nominating for an altitude record until we heard that an RAF navigator played his pipes at about 40,000 feet in a Vulcan. Essentially, a good piper gets invited to all sorts of gigs in a variety of interesting places to play the pipes in very interesting circumstances. From Debutante Balls to Twilight Ceremonies (where I couldn't see what was going on because spotlights blinded me); from large street parades to playing "It's a long Way to the Top" in front of 700 diners in the Melbourne Town Hall. The Town Hall gig included an unrehearsed rendition of "Highland Cathedral" with the organist.

What is something people don't know about you?

Most people don't know that I have performed in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It is a very busy month, and rewarding experience, with performances Monday through Saturday with two performances every Saturday. In addition to the Tattoo, there were a lot of performances around Edinburgh and Glasgow; the most memorable of which was the Edinburgh Cavalcade. It is a very long march of several kilometres and involves every pipe band that performs in each year's Tattoo.

What is the most memorable moment in your life?

Not so much a moment because getting married and raising a family has been a very longterm project. I very much prefer reflecting on that achievement than reliving aircraft crashes, however memorable for all the wrong reasons, and the like.

What is your favourite television show?

I like QI. There is a genuinely funny group of people on the QI panel and they manage to highlight lots of quite interesting facts in a particularly humorous and entertaining way.

I also always watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on TV and I never miss a viewing of the 1968 classic version of The Battle of Britain. I was in Defence aviation for 46 years and I hold a private pilot's licence - the machinery of the war era was, and remains, fascinating whereas today's aircraft are just very clinically competent.

At school, I..was neither particularly academic and nor a high achieving student. However I managed to experience quite a few interesting and challenging jobs in Air Force before retiring as a senior commissioned engineer officer.

What is your favourite place to visit in Victoria?

I never fail to be impressed by the Dandenongs, especially in autumn, however Victoria is blessed to have lots of awesome attractions, such as the Prom, west Gippsland, Mt Macedon, and the shipwreck coast..

What is your favourite book?

My favourite book is Magnusson's "Scotland, The Story of a Nation." It covers the period from Roman times to present day and the author injects a lot of insights gained from being a former chairman of Scottish National Heritage.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

There haven't been any moments of mortification although I recall confidently shouting the wrong commands on a parade once. The Warrant Officer Disciplinary (who was running the parade) made a lot of noise before he announced that I obviously had delusions of grandeur, to which I replied equally loudly that I was once a God. What do you work towards in your free time?

I have been retired for almost four years now and have been a volunteer tutor at Swinburne for most of that time. I am on the committees of an eastern suburbs camera club and The Berwick Pipers INC, as well as being the tutor for the Berwick Pipers group. I do, however, love my "job" as grandfather to Sienna, 7, and Eddie, 4.

Where would your perfect holiday destination be?

I prefer the Scottish Highlands and Scotland's west coast mainly for the scenery (great photography), culture (bagpiping and people), and the accompanying sense of familiarity and history ... but definitely NOT the midges in summer.

Berwick's Jack Ottens is booked in for the first stage of vital life-saving treatment in coming weeks.

A latte talk

By Brendan Rees Residents got a chance to pull up a chair and talk with police over a cuppa last week to discuss community issues.

Police officers from Cranbourne Casey Proactive Policing Unit hosted Coffee with a Cop which was held at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre on Wednesday 27 June.

Leading Senior Constable Dave Smith of Casey Proactive Policing Unit said the event was supported by the main shopping centres by providing free coffee and encouraging community members to approach police in a relaxed atmosphere.

"The police members distributed crime prevention advice in relation to keeping your home and vehicle safe and took questions including what crimes were committed locally and reporting noisy parties," he said "We encourage people to like the Eyewatch Casey page on Facebook to keep up to date with what is happening in their area including the next Coffee with a Cop."

By Brendan Rees Families in Cranbourne East are a step closer to having a new primary school after a site was secured to build a proposed primary school.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera last week announced land at 50S Eliburn Drive, Cranbourne East had been acquired to start work on the Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary School.

The new school will open in 2020 following construction funding of $20.1 million invested in the 2018-19 State Budget.

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the school would deliver "first-rate education facilities" for the community.

"We're getting on with the job of delivering an exciting new primary school to ensure families can access a great local school as the population in Cranbourne East continues to grow," he said.

"This is on top of a new primary school for Botanic Ridge, and a new secondary college with a special school for Cranbourne West."

Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said it is disappointing Mr Perera and Premier Daniel Andrews had "dragged their feet" with funding the much needed school.

"Unfortunately, Labor have taken parents for granted in suburbs like Clyde, Botanic Ridge, Junction Village and Cranbourne East," she said.

"This is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia and Labor has failed to provide the local infrastructure we need; we should not have to wait for an election year to have proposed schools announced."

Ms Hermans said an additional 70 brand new schools could have been built across the state had Mr Andrews not torn up the $1.3 billion East West Link contract.

By Brendan Rees Talented students added a splash of colour at the Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre with a recent exhibition of their art work.

The centre teamed up with Lyndhurst Secondary College in hosting a 'Grow your ideas' teen art competition with students' artwork displayed at the centre's foyer for the past six weeks. They received 59 entries, up from 29 last year with members of the public voting for their favourite.

Student prizes were awarded at a presentation hosted by Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre at Suburban Burger on Thursday 28 June where the school also held a celebratory lunch.

The aim of the exhibition was for students to develop their individual creativity, said principal Konnie Prades.

"The kids are very talented, their very excited and it's really, really wonderful to see how much effort they've put into their work and how proud they are of their art work," she said.

Art teacher Georgina Gaitanis said she was impressed with the variety of art pieces, adding many students dedicating their time outside of school hours.

"It was their own idea, they had their own inspiration but the theme they work with was 'Culture incorporating the community and the environment,'" she said.

Lynbrook Village Shopping Centre's marketing manager Mel Brown said it was an exciting concept and a great opportunity for students.

The success-story of folk musical duo Simon & Garfunkel will come alive in a nationally-touring musical at Bunjil Place next month.

The Simon & Garfunkel Story tells of the real-life stellar rise and then split of two boys from Queens, New York.

Leaders shine at forum

By Brendan Rees Community group leaders were recognised for their contribution in making stronger communities during a forum held on Tuesday 26 June.

Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) hosted an Ethnic Seniors Leadership Forum at Lynbrook Community Centre where attendees were presented with an award certificate for their services to the community.

The event was an opportunity for people to enjoy capacity building workshops on the changes in aged care including, accessing aged care services through My Aged Care, Centrelink, Power of Attorneys, community legal assistance.

Deputy Mayor of the City of Casey Amanda Stapledon and Marion Lau, Secretary of the ECCV presented awards to 26 senior clubs.

Now in its sixth year, special guests also included representatives from Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria (ECCV) and councillors from City of Greater Dandenong. The event also featured pop up stalls represented by City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, YMCA, Centrelink, Office of Public Advocate, Monash Health , Peninsula Legal Community Centre , Housing for the Aged Action Group and ECCV. A world food fare luncheon and entertainment was provided by the Cook Islander Seniors Group was provided to the 80 attendees.

“As we celebrate our Silver Jubilee Year, we are proud to recognise the importance of positive aging and empowering our community to feel resilient in dealing with many changes happening around them,” said chief executive of SMRC Ramesh Kumar, The centre’s Acting Team Leader Centre Jennifer Dunne said it was an entertaining day with musical performances by the Kuki Airani Pa Metua Club, and dancing by the Vietnamese Catholic Family Mutual Assistance Network and Que Huong Vietnamese Senior Group, as well as a role play about accessing My Aged Care.

VIEW names new chief Australia’s third largest property listing site has announced the appointment of Toby Balazs as the new chief executive officer of VIEW.com.au (formerly RealestateVIEW.com.au) effective 16 July 2018. Mr Balazs will take over from VIEW’s Enzo Raimondo, who has been closely involved with the property listing portal for over 16 years, first as CEO of Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) and later taking over as CEO of RealestateVIEW in 2016.

Mr Balazs joins VIEW having served as a key member of REA’s leadership and online strategy teams since 2004. Announcing Toby’s appointment, VIEW chairman John Piccolo described Mr Balazs as a dynamic thinker and leader.

“His track record in executing transformative digital programs has been exceptional and he embodies VIEW’s values of innovation, integrity and fostering strong family ideals”, he said.

“VIEW’s continued mission to make property buying more intuitive, easier to understand and informative will only be intensified with Toby joining the team.”

Stacey’s paving the way

By Casey Neill Stacey Mcgookin spent two years searching for an employer to give her a go.

The Cranbourne 21-year-old always wanted to do a trade and her cousin introduced her to air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics.

“My cousin does this as well. She took me under her wing for a bit and showed me what it was like and I loved it,” she said.

“I’ve always wanted to do more hands-on things. I’ve never seen myself as someone who could sit in an office.”

It’s a male-dominated field and Stacey was the only woman in her pre-apprenticeship course.

“I was trying to get a job for a long time,” she said.

“I had a couple of interviews elsewhere but obviously I wasn’t the right fit for their company.

“It was a year and a half, two years of trying.

It was a lot of rejection emails.”

She didn’t receive much more than a “sorry you have not been successful“.

Then she found an advertisement for an apprenticeship with Hallam’s ASM Chilltech, which services, maintains and installs commercial and industrial chillers and air-conditioners.

She applied, received a phone call the next day and had an interview the day after.

General manager Gavin Cheesman said he had no reason not to hire Stacey.

“To be honest she was by far the best interview that I had, the best resume,” he said.

He received 50-plus applications in response to the ad within about two weeks.

“I think we were down to about five or six that we interviewed,” he said.

“She was the most prepared. She had a lot of questions written down. From that point of

“Stacey was the only female that we interviewed.

“I think we had two applications but one was in South Australia.

“Last year we had a female who got to the second interview but didn’t quite deliver at the end.”

Mr Cheesman said Stacey also stood out because she wanted to be in air-conditioning.

“A lot of people who come in want to do a trade, but they don’t know which one,” he said.

“It’s a four-year, low-paying commitment.

You need someone who wants to do it and wants to stick it out.

“We’re looking beyond the apprenticeship.

“We don’t want to put four years into someone and then lose them.”

Mr Cheesman said taking Stacey on did mark a big change for the business.

“It is male-dominated. We had a little bit of a chat about how we thought the guys would behave,” he said.

“We had to be mature enough as a business

to do the right thing.

“We’ve been talking to the technicians as we go.

“The older ones have become very dad-like.

“If you’ve got good people working for you, they tend to do the right thing.”

Stacey said everyone had been supportive.

She hopes other girls will follow her lead and give traditionally male trades a go.

“There’s another girl in my trade school class, which is great,” she said.

“It’s good to see more girls doing it.”

Vanessa Nicholls of Harcourts Berwick was named the Number One Property Manager in Australia at the recent Harcourts National Awards night.

Mrs Nicholls won the award for Victoria last year and went one better in 2017-18, taking out the national title.

The Harcourts Australia National Awards were held on 30 May on the Gold Coast and culminated the three-day national conference held at The Star. The awards recognised outstanding performers across 31 categories in residential and commercial sales, property management and business achievements “I am honoured to receive this recognition for my team’s outstanding service to both our landlords and tenants,” Mrs Nicholls said.

“Being number one in Australia where there are many fabulous property managers in over 400 offices around the country is not an easy thing to do.

“Accepting the award, I give special thanks to Emily Riko for her outstanding efforts daily to make our property management service stand out from others, along with the entire Harcourts Berwick team.”

Mrs Nicholls also gave thanks to the Harcourts Berwick team, who she said had supported her and provided "a positive, professional and inspiring environment to work in every day".

Team 11’s one step closer

By Nick Creely Team 11 is one step closer to its A-League dream, with Football Federation Australia (FFA) shortlisting the south-east bid as one of the potential recipients of a licence.

The official bid of south-east of Victoria, was named alongside nine other bids to advance to the final stage of the expansion process on Friday 29 June.

Applications now have until 31 August to submit their final proposal, with a decision to be made in October on the two new licences to be handed out for the 2019/20 season.

Other bids to make it to the next stage of the expansion process are: Southern Expansion, South-Western Sydney, Macarthur, and Wollongong Wolves (NSW); Western Melbourne and South Melbourne (Victoria); Western Pride and Brisbane City (Queensland); and Canberra.

It is expected a decision will be made on the two teams to enter the competition in late October, with the final bids to be due on 31 August for the FFA to sift through.

There is a strong chance that one of the licences will be handed to a Sydney-based bid, leaving just the one spot for another team to enter the competition.

Backed by the Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils, the Team 11 bid will now spend the coming months finalising its investor group and ownership structure as it prepares to transition into a privately-owned entity.

Ryan - who is synonymous with the City of Greater Dandenong due to his Jayco Caravans business - said his passion lies with the local community.

“No force can unite quite like the round ball can,” Ryan said.

“The south-east region has been very good to me. This is an exceptionally multicultural community that would be incredibly support-

ive of a club representing it, as football is the game that many here know and love most.

“I’ve helped put together a few clubs in my time. But this bid is about more than just football, it is about community and must seek to increase social wellbeing and prompt economic growth - which I think it can and will.”

Ryan is no stranger to the A-League either, having previously had stakes in the-then known Queensland Roar and Melbourne City.

South-east Victoria, one of the fastest growing regions in the country, has a population base in excess of 1.5 million people and boasts more than 22,000 registered football players.

Team 11 project officer Matt Windley said plenty more hard work was to come, adding that the local community can also help.

“It’s an exciting little milestone, getting on the shortlist,” Windley said.

“But there is still a lot of hard work ahead, with things like finalising our investor and ownership group and continuing to work on the infrastructure plans.

“I think it’s also an important couple of months ahead to show the level of support we have.

“We’ve been blown away by the community interest, but if everyone now can demonstrate that support by doing things like joining the database and liking the Facebook page then the bid becomes even more irresistible.”

It comes after major announcements in recent months about a 15,000 capacity stadium in the heart of Greater Dandenong, an administration facility at Casey Fields, and the resigning of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the three councils.

By Hayley Wildes When you've had the sort of consistent and frustrating injuries that Sinead Flanigan has endured throughout her career, representing Australia once again means all that much more the second time around.

A right-handed pitcher from Berwick, 30-year-old Flanigan can fire down a fast-ball like few others. Her baseball talent is unquestioned and after retiring a few years ago, she has returned to the sport she loves so much.

After representing the Australia Emeralds at the 2010 Baseball World Cup, Flanigan, who had a history of shoulder injuries, was struck down once again.

"I came back [from the World Cup] and all my shoulder issues came about again and I was told I needed another surgery to clean up all the damage as my original surgery didn't go to plan." Flanigan said.

She admitted she gave up on the sport and stopped playing for a couple of years. But she missed the sport too much and returned.

playing again casually and turned myself into an outfielder and worked on my batting, so that I didn't have to pitch to save my arm a little bit." She said.

With hard work and determination, Flanigan made her way back into the Australian team.

Last year on an Emeralds tour of Japan, Flanigan began pitching again and realised that her shoulder 'was actually fine'. Since then, she has not looked back.

After having the game taken away from her, Flanigan is now injury-free and loving the sport more than ever and she admits that being involved with the Australian program this time around feels different.

"I feel like I didn't really take those moments and appreciate what I had the first time." She said.

"This time it's very, very different. I think I've grown up a lot and I love working hard now and I love being around people similar to me."

"Just being around those elite athletes; it's

such an inspiration to play with some of those girls."

The hard work has certainly paid off. Flanigan was recently named to the Australian Emeralds roster as a pitcher for the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup, which is being held in Florida, USA in August.

"I can't wait. I'm really, really excited." Flanigan said.

"I think we've got a really good chance at a medal this year."

Flanigan, who plays locally for the Springvale Lions, says the club has shaped her into the player she is today.

"The coaching staff and the women's program there is incredible. The level of training and development opportunities we get is just unparalleled." Flanigan said.

Competing at another World Cup - eight years after her first experience - is not just a credit to the skill that Sinead Flanigan possesses with ball in hand, it's a credit to her sheer will and resolve of finding a way back to the top level of her sport.

The importance of a clear pathway from junior to senior football can't be understated.

For St Francis Xavier O.C Football Club and the Narre South Lions Junior Football Club, that very reason has brought them together as one, in a relationship hope can bring the club sustained success.

The two clubs will now share facilities at the highly regarded Strathaird Reserve going forward, in a relationship that will ensure that the Lions can have a pathway to senior football, something previously lacking for both clubs.

The X-Men currently play in Division 4 of the VAFA, and sit in third spot with an 8-4 record, but hope to expand on their current onfield success and look further to the future.

Previously, the X-Men has based itself out of St Francis Xavier College in Beaconsfield, and joined the VAFA in 2007. The club won its first senior premiership in 2011, while in Division 4.

In a statement on the X-Men Facebook page on 20 June, club president Wayne Delaland stressed the importance of this decision in building a sustainable pathway for both clubs.

"This is an important relationship for both clubs as it now provides the Lions with a pathway to senior football," the statement read.

"For SFXOC, we will now have junior talent coming up each year which will strengthen our playing numbers and increase our supporter base. We have the view of creating the clubs first ever under 19s squad in the near future.

"We would like to thank the Lions committee for working tirelessly on making the partnership possible. We see a great future for both clubs."

The X-Men played its first senior game at Strathaird Reserve on 23 June against South Melbourne Districts, winning 22.17 (149) to 9.7 (61) in front of a strong crowd.

With plenty of Lions and X-Men supporters converging as one, it was the signalling of a new era. It is also expected that the relationship will enhance the Narre South Cricket Club, which currently competes in the Dandenong District Cricket Association.

The DDCA Turf 2 club is heavily involved with the Junior Football Club, and it's expected to bring more kids and senior players into the club.

The Casey Cavaliers were out to prove a point.

Taking of the top-placed Ringwood Hawks who had only lost two games for the season the Big V State Championship men were in fine form as they punished the Hawks at every opportunity.

The Cavs jumped out to a 28-22 lead after one quarter, thanks to their buzzing defence which was forcing Ringwood's shooters into tough shots and turnovers.

Early in the second quarter, when Ben Louis chased down a loose ball that his Ringwood opponents had given up on and finished with a tough contested lay-up, Casey Stadium knew their team was up for the fight.

Casey's defensive intensity was simply divine as they held Ringwood scoreless for the first 4:15 of the quarter, but as every great team does, the Hawks came again, trimming the deficit to just six points with 3:30 left in the half.

Despite Ringwood's comeback, Brandon Polk and Brent Hobba were asserting themselves in the post as they used their size and strength to simply outmuscle opponents.

Whilst Polk and Hobba were gaining the upper hand in the paint, Matt Donlan was lighting it up from deep.

At half-time, the Cavs held a 56-44 lead as Ben Louis (12 points) and Brent Hobba (11 points) were dominating. Meanwhile, Jacob Gibson (16 points) was keeping the Hawks in the contest.

Just as Casey was really starting to get away from Ringwood, Scottie Stone scored seven points in one minute to cut Casey's lead to nine points.

The Cavs responded emphatically; Mike McInnes, Donlan and Mitch Chapman hit consecutive triples to keep the Hawks at arm's length.

Every time the Hawks came at the Cavs, they were able to answer with a counterpunch of their own and that continued in the fourth as Casey ran out 115-97 winners. The impressive performance was a total team effort.

the second half to give his side a comfortable win.

Down at Waratah Reserve, Doveton SC picked up a quality 5-2 win over Mooroolbark, solidifying their position on top of the table.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH In a hard-fought clash between two great rivals, Bunyip Strikers picked up a 1-0 victory over Pakenham United.

The Strikers were strong defensively and ensured the United attacking half couldn't get enough chances at goal, in a brilliant display.

In other matches, Aspendale SC drew 2-2 with Endeavour Hills Fire, Knox United were too strong in a 6-0 win over Drouin Dragons, while Old Mentonians did enough in their 3-1 victory over Rowville Eagles. Lyndale drew 0-0 with White Star Dandenong and Somerville defeated Chelsea FC 2-1.

Matt Donlan (21 points, 5/11 3FG) was on fire from deep, Raheem Lemons (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Brandon Polk (20 points, 11 rebounds) were monsters in the paint and Ben Louis (16 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds) was simply superb.

Head coach Karl Loh talked about the influence of Matt Donlan and Ben Louis after the game. "[Donlan] is a pure shooter and we set up a lot of plays to get him open so he can take his shots, and he never lets us down," he said. "[Louis] is the floor leader, there's no question of that. They all respect him, he runs all our plays and he's very smart and finds the open man at the right time."

Looking ahead, Loh is confident that his team is capable of being a real threat at the business end of the season.

"We're seriously looking at finals and we're pretty comfortable that we can challenge anyone on any night and the boys are certainly very positive," he said.

In other Big V action, the Division 1 Women continued their fine form with a 49-78 win over Geelong on Sunday. Stephanie Pal (20 points, 7 rebounds) was sublime.

The Youth League 1 Men suffered a loss to Waverley, 88-73. Despite the loss, Oyiti Amum (26 points, 8 rebounds) was a force on both ends.

The Youth League 2 Women played a classic against Pakenham, but ultimately fell in overtime, 78-76. Laura Tuplin (23 points, 7 steals, 5 rebounds) and Tess Young (21 points, 13 rebounds) almost got their team over the line.

This week, a Sunday afternoon triple-header at Casey Stadium sees Youth League 2 Women, Youth League 1 Men and State Championship Men action tip-off from 12pm. The Division 1 Women face Warrandyte from 8pm at home on Saturday night.

The State Championship Men face Hawthorn on Saturday night on the road, while the Youth League One Men head to Werribee on Friday night.

"Yeah, we're happy (with how the season is going) - we should have probably beaten Cranbourne a couple of weeks ago, but Berwick ran all over us last week after Scott Meyer went down," he said.

The Eagles were determined to bounce back and make a statement with Meyer, the

competition's premier ruckman out with a leg injury, as well as an injury to star spearhead Nathan Langley early in the game, giving the Roos a sniff.

"Against Officer, I said to the boys that if we put our heads down and treat it like any other game, you're going to get results, and that's what we did on the weekend," McQuillen said.

"Minus Scotty (Meyer), and (Nathan) Langley getting injured early in the game, we still had a good performance."

After quarter time, the Eagles slammed on 12-goals to five in the wet and slippery conditions, with young gun Riley Verbi starring with four majors himself.

Down at AJ Robinson Reserve, a frightening first half under lights by Narre Warren inflicted Doveton with a massive 143-point loss, 26.15 (171) to 4.4 (28).

It was a special occasion for the annual Indigenous senior match, and Matt Shinners' side proved they were up for the fight from the outset after being inflicted with their first loss of the season last week against Cranbourne, with Aaron Wilson converting the first major of the game in the opening minutes.

The Doves were jumped by a side on the complete opposite end of the ladder, conceding nine first quarter goals while being unable to score a point.

The dominance of the Magpies' glittering forward line in Wilson, Trent Shinners, Nick Scanlon and Stewart Scanlon proved too much for the young Doves to contain, piling on another nine goals to take an astonishing 102-point half time lead.

The top-of-the-ladder Magpies did slow down once the fizz came out of the game, booting eight second-half goals, with the Doves showing some great signs with a couple

of goals themselves.

Once again, the Magpies spread the load in the forward half, with 13-individual goalkickers, including a bag of five by Wilson, and multiple goals to Shinners (three), Tom Miller (three), Nick Scanlon (three), Mitch Cox (two), Stew Scanlon (two) and Collins (two).

Tooradin-Dalmore, meanwhile, still has a heartbeat in the 2018 season, with a gritty 19-point win over Pakenham in blustery conditions on the Westernport leaving them within striking distance of fifth spot, 10.9 (69) to 6.14 (50).

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 10 Defence has been the cornerstone for Berwick's success, it's made them the toughest team to face for the past year.

While the Wickers still sit in third after a grinding, fiercely fought 8.7 (55) to 2.5 (17) win against Cranbourne on Saturday at Edwin Flack Reserve, the very side that inflicted Narre Warren with its first loss of the season, their defence is shaping superbly once again.

In the past fortnight, the Wickers - despite the weather - have conceded just four goals against two quality opposition in the Eagles and Beaconsfield, and average just 45.6 points against per game this season, the clear standout.

In their premiership year, the Wickers averaged 44.62 points against per game in the home and away season.

After conceding the first goal of the game on Saturday after Shaun Marusic drilled it through from 50-out, Stewart Kemperman's side conceded just 11 more points for the entire match, in a defensive masterclass reminiscent of their 2017 glory.

Kemperman lauded his side for their defensive efforts, saying it was more than just the six that make up his backline.

"Our defenders work incredibly hard, but across the ground we defended really hard, and that was back to our best in that aspect," he said.

"Big Jo (West) did another great job on (Marc) Holt, so he's been outstanding, and to have the likes of (Michael) Riseley, Ash Smith and Reece Piper in your back six it certainly makes it easier to coach.

"But it was a big effort defensively across the ground, not just the back six."

In what Kemperman describes as a "tough" day to play football in another bout of wet weather football, the Wickers couldn't hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way in the first term despite having their chances, the midfield superstars in Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and Travis Tuck were certainly on top of in-form trio Ryan Jones, Shaun Marusic and Ryan Davey.

"There was a strong, blustery breeze, and they were able to go coast-to-coast and Marusic kicked a goal, and from there, we probably knuckled down a bit, and were able to wrestle back that momentum," Kemperman said of the first half.

"We ended up having a couple of scoring shots, but it was in really tough conditions we went into quarter time down, but thought we competed pretty well, and adapted well enough, we had to just take it into the next quarter and capitalize.

"We adjusted a few things up forward, and when you get those things right, it helps your structure all over the ground, and we were probably fortunate when Troy Tharle went down with an ankle, and big ruckman Michael Wenn went down, and it helped us control the midfield and ruck battle to a degree."

There was an emotional filled melee at half time between the great rivals after Wickers' forward Harry Money kicked into the man of the mark on the siren, sparking all players from both sides to converge into the forward pocket for a couple of minutes after what was a niggly first half.

The Wickers held firm in a splendid final half with plenty of feeling between two great sides, with the home side kicking a further six goals while restricting the Eagles to just one more through Marc Holt, who was handled superbly by star defender Jo West.

Kemperman praised his side for their fight in a win that could really kick start their premiership defence in a meaningful way.

"The conditions were quite testing with all the rain we had, and it was an enormous effort from the guys, and one in the context of the season that gives us a real boost," he said.

Beaconsfield, meanwhile, is comfortable with where his side sits in the SEFNL pecking order this season despite sitting fourth on the table.

The Eagles bounced back from two consecutive losses against Cranbourne and Berwick, to register a 53-point win over Officer at Starling Road on Saturday, 13.11 (89) to 5.6 (36).

Seventh heaven for Dees

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons have reinforced their case as a legitimate VFL premiership threat with a hard-fought win over Essendon at RAMS Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Essendon sat third prior to Round 13 and with Casey sitting second the game was vital as both teams looked to strengthen their chances of a top-two finish.

The Demons came out on a mission as they searched for their seventh win in a row and their first quarter was exactly the type of footy fans have become accustomed to; tough, team-orientated and a real hunger for the contest.

Casey scored the only three goals of the opening quarter as Angus Scott, captain Jack Hutchins and Billy Stretch registered majors.

Casey's deep forward 50 entries in wet and slippery conditions were exactly what was needed and Essendon's defence was under intense pressure for the majority of the quarter.

At quarter-time, with a 20-2 lead, Casey coach Jade Rawlings praised his squad for their play.

"Absolutely brilliant, the way you've attacked the game," he said.

"You all had an opportunity to impose yourself on the contest and the game and you

all took it."

And before Rawlings could even make it back up to the coaches box, Casey had another major. Just 25 seconds into the second term, Stretch found his way through heavy traffic to put through a fantastic running goal.

As the quarter progressed, the Bombers started to find their way into the contest and three goals in the second half of the quarter saw them trim Casey's lead to 18 points at halftime.

Oskar Baker and Corey Wagner (19 disposals each to half-time) were providing plenty of attack for the Demons, while Sam Frost and Declan Keilty were pillars in defence with a plethora of important intercept marks.

The third quarter was a titanic struggle between two great outfits as neither team took a backwards step. Kobe Mutch and Nick Hind were finding plenty of the ball for Essendon and starting to prove troublesome.

For the Demons, Stretch and Melbourne veteran Bernie Vince were getting heavily involved, while Harley Balic kicked Casey's only goal for the quarter with a classy snap.

James Munro typified Casey's effort with a goal-saving tackle against the odds late in the quarter. The Demons held a narrow 10-point lead, 45-35, heading into the final term, with the game well and truly in the balance.

When Tim Smith kicked the opening goal of the final term, Casey had some breathing room, but Essendon wouldn't go away. Jordan Houlahan kicked Essendon back into the game with a goal at the nine minute mark of the quarter.

A nine-point game with 20 minutes to play meant it was on for young and old. The defences for both teams stood up in the final stages of the game and the hard slog continued. Neither team was able to score a goal in the closing minutes of the game, despite some missed opportunities from both teams.

Casey held on for a valiant eight-point win, 6.10 (46) to 8.6 (54), claiming an incredible seventh win on the trot.

Oskar Baker (34 disposals) starred for the Demons, while Corey Wagner (27 disposals), Bernie Vince (25 disposals) and Billy Stretch (23 disposals and two goals) were massive in the midfield battle.

Declan Keilty and Sam Frost were standouts in the Demons' defence, which starved the Bombers forwards of opportunities as they held them to six goals for the day.

The Demons (9-2) will look build on their impressive winning streak when they face North Melbourne (6-5) at Casey Fields from 2.10pm on Saturday afternoon.

Hustwaite’s Dandy dream could just become a reality

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays are absolutely flying in season 2018. With a 9-1 record, sitting two games clear on top of the ladder, they are the talk of TAC Cup footy.

Co-captain Campbell Hustwaite - who shares the reins with Mitch Riordan - gave an insight into the Rays stunning season thus far.

"It's probably a credit to how deep we are as a team," Hustwaite said.

"We've had players come in and out, but we've also been able to bring players in who have played roles just as well, if not better, than some of the players that have been out.

"Also, everyone has just bought into the system. At the start of the year, team defence was a massive pointer for us, so we thought it we can defend well first, attack will become a lot easier."

The depth of the team has been challenged greatly throughout the season due to varying reasons and with the Under-18 National Championships being played recently, the Rays have been without a handful of their best players for a considerable amount of time.

Bailey Williams, Zac Foot, Toby Bedford, Mitch Riordan and Sam Fletcher have all been unavailable for the Rays in almost two months

Hustwaite talked about players stepping up and accepting the challenge.

"We've had top-age players step up like Lachie McDonnell and Reid Nanscawen, but there's been a lot on the bottom-agers step up too. Ned Cahill has been massive; he's had a couple of good weeks for a 17-year-old," Hustwaite said.

He knows better than most what the Stingrays' incredible development program can do

for players, and this is ultimately driving team success.

"This is my third year in the system - not including a couple of summers in under-14s and 15s - but the way the place runs, the coaches just want to make every individual better," he said.

"It's obviously helped me and every other player on the list, and individual progress benefits the whole team. It seems like we've been getting better and better in the last few years I've been involved."

Running out as captain of the Dandenong Stingrays is something that Hustwaite cherishes and doesn't take for granted. He says leadership came naturally to him after captaining sides in juniors at Rosebud.

When he arrived at the Rays as an underager, the culture of respect allowed him to be himself and lead from the outset.

"Coming in as a bottom-ager, playing pretty early in the season, I didn't feel the need to just be a background player, so I used my voice from the start," Hustwaite said.

"They're all pretty good at listening to what I have to say and it makes my job a lot easier when I'm not having to battle with people. Everyone is happy to take on what I say and it's awesome, it's what that team comradery is

built around, just being able to take on everything said."

Currently riding a five-game winning streak, the Rays are determined to not let arrogance creep in.

"Hopefully we can steer clear of individual footy and not be complacent with the 9-1 start; we just need keep pushing harder each and every week," Hustwaite said.

"A big focus around the club at the moment has been to not get complacent with where we're at, because that can lead to selfish footy, which is what we're going to stay away from."

With the ruthless brand of football the Rays are playing, along with the incredible depth and comradery within the group, Dandenong is marching towards a deep finals run and maybe, just maybe, they can claim the club's maiden TAC Cup premiership.

What would it mean to Hustwaite to cocaptain the Stingrays to a premiership?

"It's one of the things that I've had pencilled into my mind since the start of the season," he admitted.

"Having the co-captain tag with Mitch Riordan, we just want to make history and it would be pretty special to captain the Stingrays to their first premiership."

Petrie’s in Panther paradise as Dales get the job done

By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 12 A Drew Petrie-inspired Pearcedale shook off its rival Devon Meadows in a thriller on Saturday, 10.8 (68) to 9.6 (60).

Pearcedale held a narrow lead over the visitors for the majority of the day, and with the former AFL star making a cameo appearance at the club, the Panthers looked like they wouldn't be trouble.

But despite Petrie kicking a goal and giving the defenders some headaches, a five-goal haul to Michael Theodoridis almost saw the visitors claw their way back from a 17-point three quarter time deficit, kicking three goals to one in the final quarter.

The former North Melbourne and West Coast star was pivotal - particularly late in the game - in a mix of both ruck and forward duties.

Former Dandenong Stingray captain Luke Dalmau was superb, kicking three goals and dominating the midfield for the winners, while Theodoridis and Liam Drew were the best for the visitors.

Prior to the game on Saturday, Petrie was the guest speaker at a luncheon and helped the under 19's warm up for their clash.

With the game in the balance, the Bulls made the most of their opportunities in the fourth quarter to run out 12.12 (84) to 8.12 (60) winners.

Jake Gains and the ever-consistent Kyle Martin were best for the Bulls, while Hudson Thomas kicked three crucial goals.

Rowville staved off Doncaster at Seebeck Oval. Trailing by six points at half-time, the Hawks turned the tables on the Sharks in the

third term and never looked back, winning 15.11 (101) to 11.13 (79). Riley D'Arcy (four goals) and Mitchell Garner were sublime for Rowville.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 11 Keysborough couldn't match it with Murrumbeena for four quarters, falling 14.9 (93) to 16.9 (105). Chris Bryan (three goals) was again brilliant for the Burras, while James Anwyl battled valiantly.

The Doveton Eagles remain on top of the ladder after disposing of East Brighton, 11.8 (74) to 17.11 (113).

With scores level at half-time, the Eagles took control of the game in the second half as the ruthless forward line duo of Russell Robertson (six goals) and Darren Sheen (four goals) combined for 10 majors.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 10 Endeavour Hills comprehensively defeated Black Rock, 15.7 (97) to 6.5 (41). The Falcons held their opposition scoreless in the opening quarter and continued their dominance throughout the game.

Nathan Strom (four goals) and Daniel Batson were instrumental for Endeavour Hills.

Hampton Park took care of business against South Yarra, 5.3 (33) to 15.17 (107). Shannon Henwood and Travis Davis had plenty of the

ball for the Redbacks.

Hallam's horror season continued; obliterated by Ashwood, 2.3 (15) to 19.8 (122). Dale Carroll booted eight majors for Ashwood, while Jonathan Daly and Dean Webb battled hard for the Hawks.

Springvale Districts had 14 individual goalkickers as it tore Heatherton's defence to shreds on their way to claiming a 6.4 (40) to 22.13 (145) win.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 11 The Redlegs claimed their second win of the season and in doing so, lifted themselves off the bottom of the ladder. Dandenong defeated Sandown 15.10 (100) to 11.7 (73). Jayke Hopkins (four goals) was superb for Dandenong.

Lyndale fell to Cerberus 7.11 (53) to 4.3 (27).

Trailing all day, the Pumas struggled offensively, but Jayden MacDonald can hold his head high after a robust performance.

Carrum Patterson Lakes was too strong for the Frankston Dolphins, 12.8 (80) to 7.6 (48).

Aaron Guy and Douglas Watterson starred in the win.
