By Peter Douglas, Russell Bennett Emerald favourite son and Carlton legend Kade Simpson achieved a major milestone on Saturday 30 June, reaching the coveted 300game club.

After learning his craft as an Emerald Football Club junior, Simpson has slowly but surely carved out a remarkable career that has seen him become one of the most widely respected players in the AFL. Though, it wasn't smooth sailing for him in the early days.

Simpson's first three games, where he didn't register a single disposal, have been widely spoken about in the lead-up to his big occasion.

On the eve of his 300th match, Simpson clearly hasn't forgotten his roots either, turning out to a function at Emerald Football Club, at the Chandler Reserve on Saturday 23 June, held in honour of his achievement.

"In that first year, I didn't get a lot of time on the ground," Simpson said.

"They didn't rotate like they do these days; so, in my second game, I played two minutes and spent the rest of the game on the bench.

"In my second year, I played three more games but finished the year with a broken hand and missed the last couple of months of the season.

"But once I got that self-belief that I belonged in the senior side, that went a long way to my form picking up and (then Carlton coach) Dennis (Pagan) giving me the confidence to just go out there and play my style of football.

"He always wanted me to take the game on, and he'd tell me if I got caught holding the ball, he didn't care - he wanted me to keep doing it."

Simpson, now 34, admits Pagan was hard on his players, but says he learned a lot about hard work while playing under him.

After nailing down a regular spot in the Blues' senior side, Simpson went on to play 158 consecutive games at the level - from Round 15, 2005, to Round 12, 2012.

He says his ability to play through injuries, and perform at the high level, was also something he learned under Pagan.

Joining Simpson at the event was two of his Carlton teammates, who, in a quirk of fate, had also plied their trade with the Emerald Football Club, Cam O'Shea and Matthew Lobbe.

The esteem they hold him in is obvious despite the cheek that comes along with it.

"He's the oldest and grumpiest at the club," Lobbe said of Simpson.

"He's a bit of a dad around the playing group, so that's pretty entertaining!"

Simpson told the Carlton website he is truly humbled to be included among the club's greats to have reached 300 games.

"It's embarrassing really to be named alongside these sorts of guys ... not only legends of Carlton but legends of the AFL," Simpson said.

"But I'm sure, once I'm retired, that this is something I'll look back on and hold pretty dear to my heart."

Simpson has become just the second player from what is now the AFL Yarra Ranges competition to play 300 VFL/AFL games.

Zombies the star of show

By Derek Schlennstedt Monbulk College is holding their annual production and three alumni have returned to the school to not only assist the director but to remind current students about the importance of drama.

Sarah Clark, a graduate from 2010 spoke to the 'Mail' about this year's production which she described as a zombie romance.

"This year the college production is called Zombie Prom," Ms Clark said.

"It's a black comedy about a boy and girl who meet and fall in love at high school, but it's a classic he's a bad boy, she's a good girl and there's pressure from her parent to breakup with him."

"Anyway the boy in question then jumps into a nuclear reactor ... it gets quite bleak, but it brings the laughs and is quite funny."

Ms Clark, along with fellow alumni John Riddell and Annalee Zampaglione, have returned this year to help assist in producing and organising the production, which takes to the stage in August.

Speaking about her own experiences with the production while she attended Monbulk College, Sarah recalled the importance of it in her own life.

"For the three of us, that was where we became friends, and it was really quite influential in our lives," she said.

"It's great to see the kids have the same opportunity that we had.

"I think that was probably really the year I found my confidence ... I'd done some performing outside of school, but it was probably the highlight of anything I did at school and gave me a lot more confidence; I loved it."

Ms Clark said the casting so far had been great and the students had really taken on the task of rehearsing.

The production is due to come to the stage in the second week of August; and while a little dark, Ms Clark assured that it was definitely family friendly, and included many fun musical numbers.

Students show their mettle, as garden takes shape

By Derek Schlennstedt Students at Emerald Secondary College are helping their fellow students by helping build a sensory garden.

With the help of artist Jane BennettsBrown, and a generous State Government and Creative Learning grant, Year 10 and 12 VCAL students have been using recycled metal to create artwork for it.

Sensory gardens are popular with and beneficial to adolescents, especially those who have sensory processing issues, including autism and other disabilities. As such, the art pieces the sensory garden appeals to the five senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing and taste.

Wellbeing Leader Felicity Wooden said it was a particularly good pairing between Ms Bennets-Brown and the school, as not only does the project promote creativity, but the students also learn how to weld.

"The students are doing an amazing job and have come up with all different things," Ms Wooden said.

"There's a weave and breathe wall which is a big mesh thing that they've welded together that you can weave leaves through, and stroke."

There's a water feature with copper pots ... they are doing some really good things."

Ms Wooden said that the sensory garden would be accessed as a calming place and somewhere the students can stimulate their senses in a relaxing and gentle way.

An uncertain future

By Derek Schlennstedt For many residents in Belgrave South and the surrounding suburbs, the Belgrave Community House is a second home.

Now, that home is at risk of being demolished.

In early June, Minister for Education, James Merlino, announced that Belgrave South Primary School would receive $200,000 to build a new, modern outdoor classroom and community centre.

The 'dilapidated' and 'past its use-by date' community house building, located on school land, and owned by the Department of Education will be removed as part of the upgrade.

Lyn Taylor, Centre Manager at the Community House said that although the announcement confirmed that a new building would replace the current one, it would only be able to be used intermittently.

"What they are building is an education centre for the school - not on this footprint," said Ms Taylor "The department is saying community groups can use it after hours, but it would not be a home."

The current Community House is shared with the Belgrave South Scouts, who use it for meetings and to store their extensive equipment.

Ms Taylor, invited the 'Mail' for a tour where it was clear the building required some maintenance work.That maintenance cost is believed to be one of the reasons for its demolition, and Ms Taylor said she believed that the building was surplus to the school's needs.

A Department of Education and Training spokesperson said that 'the building would require significant investment to continue to be used in the future,' and that, 'Belgrave South Community House and the local council have advised that they will not provide funds for this purpose'.

"The condition of the ageing building has been deteriorating for some time and is in very poor condition," a Department of Education and Training spokesperson said.

"Despite it being on school grounds, it is not a school facility and is not used or needed by the school."

Though, Ms Taylor confirmed that the school uses the building to store props for productions.

For over 35 years the building has serviced the community's needs, and Ms Taylor said that they were unsure whether it would continue to do that.

The loss of the building will also mean the loss of the occasional care program.

"At this stage there is nowhere for occasional care to go; we don't have the facilities if we lost this building," said Ms Taylor "It's not the type of child care that people book in to go to work, it's for families who have no extended family in the area and who just need a break from it."

"It's for that section of the community who don't have anything else and who can't afford long day care."

Details about the size of the new building are scarce.

This has hampered efforts by Ms Taylor and the Scouts to determine whether current programs would remain.

"It's hard not knowing ourselves whether the services are still going to be in the community, or if they are going to disappear altogether," Ms Taylor said.

"All I can say is that we intend for the services to continue with the exception of occasional care because there is nowhere for that to go if we lose this building."

Opposition Monbulk candidate, John Schurink, said he was keen to see the building refurbished rather than demolished.

"I'm really advocating for the building to remain ... the structure of the building is just fine and some refurbishment work would bring it well up to standard," Mr Schurink said.

"We need to ensure the good work that Lyn does continues, particularly the occasional child care, because there's very little of that in the hills."

Between 6pm on 23 June and 9am on 24 June, unknown persons has entered a property on Queens Road, Silvan, where they have stolen a quantity of tools from inside an unlocked toolbox.

Offenders attempted to remove a very heavy tool, but were unable to take it from the property due to its weight.

New bail laws.

Victorian criminals will now face tougher bail laws, with the completion of reforms sparked

by Melbourne's Bourke Street tragedy.

Senior police can now remand a person in custody for up to 48 hours - until a court can hear their application for bail - under the changes which came into to force on July 1.

The measures will also strengthen the tests for people to be granted bail, with decisionmakers encouraged to take into account a person's potential risk to community safety.

The changes are the second set of bail reforms to come into effect, with the first round of amendments implemented in May. The reform is part of the Victorian government's response to a 2017 review of the state's bail system, prompted by the Bourke St rampage which killed six people when a car was driven through a busy lunchtime crowd.

But it won't only be Victoria's alleged crooks who will feel the impact of legal changes as the new financial year gets under way.

Those in the market for a new pet will find they can only purchase direct from a breeder, rather than through a shop.

Pet stores will now only be able to sell dogs older than six months and cats older than eight weeks, sourced from registered pounds, animal shelters or enrolled foster carers.

Health facilities a priority As the local member for Monbulk, giving my community access to the best health facilities possible is, and always has been, a priority of mine.

Recently, claims were made by the Opposition regarding the accessibility of Angliss Hospital's new Intensive Care Unit.

Unfounded and incorrect claims about lack of funding and staff support - which is ironic, given the Liberals had the entire Angliss Hospital slated for closure under the Kennett government - and Labor is the only government that has ever invested in the hospital.

The truth is; we're almost at the finish-line

on the $20 million redevelopment of Angliss Hospital's new Intensive Care Unit and Short Stay Unit - a 2014 election promise we've been committed to delivering.

This expansion will provide quality care to the community and addresses past problems of service shortages and infrastructure issues.

While the physical redevelopment was completed ahead of schedule in May this year, there will be an important commissioning period - which has always been included in the project's timeline - in the coming months before operation of the ICU commences to ensure the safe delivery of the new services.

This involves hiring and training staff and installing test equipment before the expansion opens later this year.

We want the new facility to be the pinnacle

of safety, and therefore these steps are more than necessary to ensure that.

The ICU will use the latest technology to stabilise and treat heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, organ failure and complications resulting from surgery.

It means urgent care when it's needed most and less instances of ambulances diverting patients to other hospitals.

I want to thank you - patients, staff and the community - for your patience during the construction of the new fourth floor.

I look forward to officially opening level four of the Angliss Hospital as soon as safely possible.

Station upgrade

By Peter Douglas Monbulk CFA could be in for an election windfall if the Matthew Guy-led Liberal-Nationals Government comes to power in November's state election.

Monbulk candidate John Schurink announced on Friday 22 June his government would commit $2.4 million towards the development of the fire station.

The upgrade would see a new four-bay station constructed, with fire brigade volunteers being able to work with modern facilities.

Mr Schurink said the works would assist greatly in improving fire services for the local community and surrounding areas.

the resources it needs to fight fires and protect our communities, when we need the help most, and this new facility will provide that," Mr Schurink said.

"The current facilities here at Monbulk are no longer acceptable for a station that not only provides fire response, but turns out for rescue over a large area across the Dandenong Ranges."

Given the brigade's special capability in ropes and road rescue, training is an essential part of their activity.

Presently, the facilities are no longer fit for purpose and no longer ensure safety for volunteers.

"The credit for this funding belongs to the community and local candidate, John Schurink, who worked together and made the case for this project, so they can provide the best for our hardworking volunteers," Mr Battin said.

Meanwhile, Monbulk CFA captain, Simon Schroder, said the support was most welcome for the brigade.

"It means a lot to us. As you know, it takes a lot for the brigade to raise money to keep going, on top of what the government provides," Captain Schroder said.

"Certainly, a building with a new station would be well beyond us and we appreciate the government promising to dip in here and help us out."

Close to 5000 supporters have signed a petition urging the Victorian Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, to ignore a planning amendment before him related to the redevelopment of Burnham Beeches.

Included in the amendment, C142, is a proposal that could see the removal of as many as 13 of the Beech trees that line Sherbrooke Road near the entrance of the iconic property.

Co-developers - celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison are seeking permission to remove some of the trees in order to accommodate a driveway and road-widening works at the estate's entrance.

However, the proposal has earned the ire of several groups in the Dandenong Ranges, with emerging lobby group, 'Save the Beech Trees', recently holding a 'peaceful gathering' at the Alfred Nicholas Gardens to voice their concerns.

The gathering comes as Yarra Ranges Council awaits the decision of Mr Wynne.

Emerald resident Dylan Arnold has established the online petition, through change. org, which he said he created "for concerned individuals to sign and share their reasons for signing - in the hope it can be sent to all the decision-makers".

Mr Arnold said this is to "show them (the decision-makers) that this community is clearly against the proposed developments and destruction of the trees".

In the petition, Dylan has pleaded for community support, which reads: 'We are of the opinion that the Minister should not sign off on the amendment until further investigations have taken place and finalised a plan, in relation to the Beech trees and road and drivewaywidening works, is submitted to his office.

'As opposed to simply putting trust in developers and council to make the decision after the fact, which, in many ways, comes across as a 'cart before the horse' approach to what is a highly contentious and important issue'.

New editor for the 'Mail'

By Peter Douglas Over the past three-and-a-half years, I've had the privilege of filling the position of editor with Mail New Group.

During this time, I've been exceptionally fortunate to have enjoyed great support from the Yarra Ranges community, as well as Star News Group and North East Media.

This opinion piece is my opportunity to thank the many individuals who I've worked closely with (thank you!).

I have finished up with Mail News Group to take up a media position with the City of Port Phillip.

Having taken up the role of editor in January 2015, after moving from the North East Victoria/Border region, I quickly became aware of just how passionate and dedicated the locals are in the Yarra Ranges.

I've enjoyed reporting on the many issues that are important to the area, as well as meeting many of the great characters.

More than anything, this job is all about the great people you get to meet.

Though, from time to time, I am asked which story is the biggest, or most rewarding, I've worked on.

To be honest, I like to think of it as the ongoing coverage we've been able to offer over a

long period of time, more than one particular article.

But if I did have to answer more in depth, it would be the many road tragedies we've covered here that have left the most profound impression on me.

The Avonsleigh Angels incident in 2015 is one I'll never forget.

The Cooper Ratten road tragedy, as well as the accident in Mount Evelyn that claimed the life of Amber Beard, are others that have left indelible impressions.

On a more positive note, I believe our coverage of the Upwey CFA centenary, and the battle to keep open the Upwey-Belgrave RSL,

has been first-class.

The Pride Cup in Yarra Glen, too, is another I have enjoyed working on.

Moving forward, stepping into the role will be Casey Neill, who many may know from her first stint with Mail News Group as a reporter.

Casey has moved across from the 'Dandenong Journal', where she has been a reporter for the past five years.

She brings with her many years of experience in the media industry, as well as an infectious enthusiasm and a drive to do her best for the community.

Thanks to all those who congratulated me on my recent letter to the 'Mail' regarding the cruelty of the live animal export trade.

But I didn't write it.

The strange truth is that there are 'two' women named Pauline Hosking who live in Monbulk.

Pauline I, who has been in Monbulk the longest, is rightly concerned with supporting animals.

Pauline II (me) used to live in Emerald and writes plays and children's books.

A slippery subject After receiving a phone call from (Monbulk MP) James Merlino's office ... I went down to

CARTOON his office in Belgrave, thinking they were going to inform me they have finally secured some funds to repair the walking tracks in the Sherbrooke forest. How naive of me.

You see, I wrote a letter to James Merlino on 7 September 2015, after coming back from a two-week hiking holiday in Austria and Slovenia.

While I was there, I was amazed at how well the walking tracks are maintained; unlike the overgrown and quagmire-like state of our forest tacks.

Well, he sent my letter onto Lisa Neville, Minister for Environment, and she returned a reply and promised in the letter to remove organic matter from the tracks, resurfacing with gravel, construct drainage points and slashing vegetation along track edges and will be completed by December 2015.

Unfortunately, that time has come and gone.

But they have placed star-pickets with a

sign, warning you of the appalling conditions of the tracks and that they can be very slippery in the winter.

I suppose Parks Victoria thinks that is fulfilling their duty of care?

But, of course, when I got to the office and made an inquiry what the phone call was about, I was informed that it was from James Merlino's electoral office to see what I thought of the political parties.

While I was there, I picked up a pamphlet called Active Victoria.

In the pamphlet, it shows they have allocated $1 billion to sports and recreation for Victoria; of that, they have allocated $420 million towards community infrastructure such as sports grounds, parks and trails etc.

Well, we are certainly not getting any up here, so where is all this money going?

Parks Victoria is not getting any.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because the tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo roof, concrete top or open top tanks.

The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house.

By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, homes can be kept cool and wet. Or if need be, the tank can be used as protection to keep cool from flames and radiant heat.

More support for women Advocacy group Voices of Women (VoW) is hosting Women in Government workshops from July to November, to provide an avenue for Yarra Ranges women to learn about local government and why we more female councillors are needed.

The workshops, held at Yarra Ranges Council venues, will explain how local government works, the role of a Councillor, and will inspire participants to support more women to run for council in 2020.

Female councillors from the east will be speaking at the sessions, to share their experience campaigning in their local communities and what they learnt and achieved along the

way after being elected.

VoW president and small business owner Sue West said the sessions and upcoming mentoring program would assist in addressing and supporting candidates through all phases, from putting their hands up to become a councillor to providing support and encouragement to the candidates.

"Our aim is to create a groundswell of community based support and increase the awareness in the community of the need for and the importance of female representation in decision making," Ms West said.

"Women make up more than half the population in the Yarra Ranges so women should

be adequately represented in our community.

There needs to be diversity, reflecting different perspectives, experience and leadership styles."

Ms West said there were opportunities for women to support the process of ensuring strong female candidates become available to run by contributing to administration, marketing, door knocking, childcare or even moral support.

The 1000 Portrait Project ... so far

By Kath Gannaway Mail readers will be familiar with Healesville photographer Jesse Graham's work as a former photojournalist with the Mail, but not perhaps with his brilliant portraiture.

His interest in photography developed from taking photos on his first camera phone to when he got his first 'real' camera at 16 while still at Healesville High School.

The 'bug' really bit around four years ago when he challenged himself to take a photo a day.

"It was a way of learning my way around the camera and learning the different techniques and use of the settings through taking photos in different situations, landscapes, under different light conditions, day and night ..." he said as he prepares to hang a major exhibition which launches in July.

The 1000 Portrait Project, a three-year documentation of people from the wider Melbourne area and their stories followed on from that first photo-a-day challenge, inspired by a growing admiration for the art of portraiture.

Jesse said he was particularly inspired by National Geographic photojournalist Steve McCurry's famous 1984 photographic portrait of Sharbat Gula titled 'Afghan Girl'.

"I've always loved portraiture. I bought McCurry's book and decided I wanted to do a large-scale project which I thought would also be another worthwhile learning tool."

Undoubtedly his experience as a journalist

has played into the way he approaches participants, who vary from family members and friends to co-workers and passers-by on the street.

While the photographs in many ways speak for themselves, and stand alone as compelling portraits, the words are important.

"I write a bit about how I know the person, about my relationship with them, and more recently I've been interviewing people and asking a few questions.

"The words are important in contextualising and giving an insight into the person," Jesse says.

The project which is due to finish in 2019, is halfway completed and one of the biggest challenges right now for the artist is choosing the works that will feature in the exhibition which opens at Red Earth Gallery, Mooroolbark Community Centre, on Thursday, 5 July at 6pm.

In the meantime, Jesse said he is looking for another 480 people to complete the project.

By Derek Schlennstedt The ARKadian Authentic All-Woman Old Time Music Hall (the second) is ARK Theatre's upcoming production.

Written for the Lilydale thespians company

by Geelong-based Collin Mockett, Fiona Carter will once again direct this fond reincarnation of the vaudeville/music hall shows of yesteryear.

The all singing, all dancing production is an all-woman show, though Ms Carter admitted that there would be a few men thrown in to round out the numbers.

She said audiences would be treated to lively renditions of songs and many familiar favourites.

Those who come along can expect to be entertained in a light hearted way," she said.

"The Setting is 1918, just after, or the end of the war, and there's sing-alongs, solo performances and a mixture of old times songs ... it's all about putting the audience at ease so they can sit back and think back to a bygone era."

Colourful characters in costumes to match will recreate the atmosphere and entertainment of a 1918 music hall and patrons are also encouraged to come in 1918 period costumer if they wish.

Accompanied on piano by Miss Brooklyn Keybourne, Chairman Ross will again offer a rendition of a G&S favourites and will no doubt regale audiences with tale of the company.

The show is the second Music Hall with Ark theatre's first music hall two years ago warmly received.

Over the first two weekends in July, seven shows will be presented at Lilydale Heights College Performing Arts Centre at 17 Nelson Rd Lilydale.

There is still that log-jam in Division 1 with all top five sides winning on Saturday, so the next couple of weeks are bound to be very entertaining.

In Division 2, Seville is still on top with a bigger percentage gap separating them from Yarra Glen in second.

The winners in senior football: Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Yea, Kinglake, Yarra Junction and Seville.

A-grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Seville, Yarra Junction and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 15.9.99 d Emerald 11.16.82 Healesville sits fifth on the ladder but by percentage only after a win over Emerald.

Healesville got the early lead, kicking six straight in the first to 3.3.

Emerald was well and truly in it, but the visitors kicked 5.3 to 3.5 in the second and the margin at the main break was 25 points.

The third quarter was an even contest but Healesville maintained its buffer going into the last.

Emerald had most of the play in the last, kicking 3.4 to 2.1, and if only the side was accurate the result could have been a boil over.

It was all over, bar the shouting, in the last but the margin should have been bigger come the final siren.

Our budding soccer stars Monbulk Rangers Soccer club hosted 120 primary students from six local schools in a round robin tournament on Tuesday 26 June.

Monbulk coach Sam Wilson was thrilled with the response from Emerald, Menzies Creek, Selby, Macclesfield, Cockatoo and Gembrook primary schools, where she has been holding soccer clinics to encourage participation in the sport.

Emerald won the girls' competition for the day while the Selby boys were victorious.

"It was great to see such strong competition from the students and I am looking forward to spreading the word about soccer to other schools in our region," Wilson said.

She has been selected to coach the state junior girls in the Victorian Churches Football Association's national titles.

Meanwhile, the Monbulk Rangers Lions remain undefeated in the Under-13 Boys East Football Federation of Victoria competition, moving ahead of Ringwood FC to the top of the ladder.

The Lions farewelled dynamic midfielder Will Thurlow, whose family is moving from Healesville to Singapore where he'll receive coaching from Manchester City.

Opening community doors Nominations are open for the fifth annual Australia Post One Netball Community Awards.

The awards celebrate individual and community efforts to engage and support diverse communities with netball.

The awards recognise individuals, clubs and associations who go above and beyond.

"We believe welcoming and inclusive sporting environments improve attitudes and behaviours towards people from different backgrounds, building empathy and understanding," Australia Post marketing and community general manager, Andrea Pearman, said.

"We're excited to celebrate those who open their netball club doors, welcome new faces and use the power of sport to help communities work better for everyone.

Past winners enabled netball participation and inclusion for people with disabilities, LGBITQ communities, multi-cultural and indigenous Australians, socio-economically disadvantaged, remote and rural communities.

Caitlin Thwaites is a Collingwood Magpies and Australian Diamonds netball player and

Australia Post One Netball Ambassador.

She'll spend time with the award-winners.

"I feel incredibly privileged to meet people from towns and cities across Australia doing such extraordinary things to break down barriers in the community through netball, which really goes back to the grassroots level of what I love about the sport," she said.

"It's truly inspirational to have such amazing people in our clubs and associations and to have them recognised through these Awards spreads the goodwill and encourages others to get involved."

Netball Australia CEOMarne Fechner said sporting clubs were "a great way to bring people together, breaking down barriers to open the door to people regardless of race, religion or gender".

Nominations for the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards close at midnight on Sunday29 July.

An independent judging panel will select up to eight winners and announce them on Thursday 16 August.

Sculpture has a message A Gippsland artist has created a giant carshaped brain with legs to show Victoria's youngest drivers how vulnerable they are when driving.

The Transport Accident Commission's Green Man Grants are supporting Emma Cornwall to create a sculpture that resembles a car made from brain matter.

The sculpture is named 'driving us mindless' and it highlights the vulnerability of people while they're on the road.

Instead of wheels, the car features sour pairs of legs that represent a human's in ability to compete with technology's rapid development - showing the focus and control needed to drive safely, despite advancing technology.

The sculpture also has a glass windscreen, doors and exhaust that appear to be consumed by the brain.

Emma completed the sculpture at her home in Thorpdale, receiving help from her parents, the local mechanic, as well as Melbourne-based artist and mentor, Katie Lee. The Green Man Grants challenge young people between 18 and 25 to create a project that sends a strong road safety message to their peers.

The projects have to fit in with the briefs: vehicle safety, vulnerability and shared responsibility.

Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, said it was a rewarding project.

"These grants challenge recipients to think

Meanwhile, TAC chief executive officer, Joe Calafiore, said the initiative needs support.

"Young drivers are one of the highest risk groups on our roads with inexperience, lifestyle factors, risk-taking behaviour and using older, less safe cars, making them vulnerable to crashes."

"Together with the robust exterior styling and sophisticated interior, the new RAV4 will offer even greater appeal to people with active lifestyles who want to explore the city, make a weekend trip to the country or head off the beaten track."

RAV4 is one of Toyota's most popular vehicles in Australia with cumulative sales of more than 290,000 vehicles.

The popular SUV has achieve record sales in each of the past five years and in 2017 passed 20,000 deliveries for the first time in a calendar year.

RAV4 has continued its success in 2018, setting January and February records, culminating in the highest sales for the first two months in the vehicle's 24-year history.

The 2019 RAV4 is the second SUV to adopt a TNGA platform, joining the C-HR that was launched early last year.

The New York reveal also included a RAV4 Adventure model inspired by Toyota's off-road vehicle heritage. It features a more rugged exterior with an aggressive grille, fog light surrounds, large over-fenders and unique wheel design.

The new RAV4 comes standard with new active-safety technologies and capabilities that enhance protection.
