Pakenham Railway Station has been labelled the “worst” premium station in Victoria by Bass MP Brian Paynter, who is calling for upgrades and the removal of level crossings locally. “This station hasn’t changed since I caught the train back in the 1970s,” Mr Paynter said. “I want to challenge the Transport Minister to show me a worse premium station in Victoria, because I don’t think there is one. “It’s by far the worst in the state.” Opening in 1877, Pakenham Station didn’t go on to become a premium station until 1997. A majority of the pebble stone structure as it currently stands hasn’t been altered since the mid ‘70s. In terms of station standards, a premium station is a high standard station that has better staffing and facilities than standard stations - such as staff from the first to last train, amenities and bicycle cages. While the station has these facilities, the MP says they are ageing and need to be modernised. “It’s an old station: the toilets are old, the indoor area is too small and there’s hardly any shelter for commuters in the winter. “With the new depot being built in Pakenham’s east there are going to be even more trains clogging up the level crossings. “I want to see the removal of these level crossings and an upgrade of the station as a whole. It’s just not good enough.” The Stabling Yards in Pakenham’s east will be used to maintain and store trains while the actual construction of the trains will occur elsewhere.

What's the most interesting part about being a senior keeper at Moonlit Sanctuary? The variation of day to day work. I normally have a plan of what I would like to achieve for the week, but when you work with animals you have to be able to think on your feet as different things come up almost every day. Although this can sometimes be stressful it is also very exciting and keeps you thinking outside the box. What is something people don't know about you? I grew up in Launceston, Tasmania. Growing up on a semi-rural property, I had a love of animals from a young age and I knew early on in my life that I wanted to work with them. Some nights, we used to hear Tasmanian Devils in our back yard (sometimes breaking into our bantam hut!) What is the most memorable moment in your life? I have had many memorable moments in my life, but one of my career highlights so far, has to have been when I got to see some of the critically endangered Orange-bellied parrots that we bred be released into the wild. It was quite amazing to actually see the birds fly out of their enclosure and realise they were in the wild, they flocked together then took off to the feeding grounds. It was truly thrilling. What is your favourite television show? I don't know ... I like Masterchef at this time of year, but I don't really watch that much TV. Which AFL football team do you follow? Collingwood. What is your favourite place to visit in Victoria? I enjoy camping down at the Otways and going to Phillip Island (not during the busy period though). I also love going to wineries, I live and work on the Mornington Peninsula where there are around 91 wineries, so sometimes

‘Fed up’ with footpath By Kyra Gillespie More voices have joined the chorus to fix Pakenham's Main Street footpath. Jack and Margaret Mitchell say they have been on council's back "for many years" about the problematic path and fear they too may experience a nasty fall. "The state of Main Street is disgraceful," Mr Mitchell said. "The surfaces are uneven and worn out. When the paving was done all those years ago it looked fantastic, but over the years it's developed cracks. "Main Street as a whole has been treated appallingly over the years because for council, it's out of sight and out of mind." Mr Mitchell said the aged paths are becoming a hazard to pedestrians of all ages. "There are a lot of elderly residents living in Pakenham who are at risk of falling. And it's not just the elderly; the other day a woman in her '40s had a nasty fall. "Council spent all that money on Mr Yakkerboo and the dog while the state of the paving remains questionable and people continue to fall. "They need to make the streets safe for residents who pay their rates." Mr Mitchell highlighted a number of problematic areas to council, particularly the 'black humps' where the footpath has been attempted to be patched up. Council's Manager for Infrastructure Services Andrew Barr acknowledged the issue. "Cardinia Shire Council officers were recently made aware of the black patches on the footpath along Main Street, Pakenham," Mr Barr said. "These works were undertaken by a private contractor without Council's knowledge and resulted in a number of potential trip hazards. "The contractor is yet to return and properly reinstate the footpath. While Council is trying to identify the contractor and arrange for the reinstatement of the footpath, Council

The Mitchells believe residents of all ages are at risk of falling. 182218 officers have been out on site to level out the repairs and remove these hazards. However, we expect a proper reinstatement of the path will be undertaken. "This is an ongoing issue with private contractors, which Council is continuing to address on behalf of the community." Under Cardinia Shire's Road Management Plan, footpaths are only required to be repaired if they have an imperfection that causes a lip of more than 20 millimetres.

Bridge build becomes ‘freedom’ overpass for commuters Nearly 145,000 hours of work have helped build the 3,200-tonne bridge over the rail line and the 60,000-tonne supporting wall. Work will begin on the southern bridge and new traffic lanes on the south side of Thompsons Road. The State Government will also duplicate sections of Thompsons Road and upgrade 11 intersections, including new traffic lights to boost safety at the notorious Western Port Highway intersection. Existing traffic light intersections will be upgraded at Wheelers Park Drive, William Thwaites Boulevard, Marriott Boulevard and Lyndhurst Boulevard. Roundabouts at the intersections of Thompsons and Dandenong-Frankston Road and Thompsons and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road will also be replaced with traffic lights. A congested level crossing has been removed on Thompsons Road with drivers set to enjoy a smoother journey over a new overpass. Premier Daniel Andrews today joined Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan at Thompsons Road on Sunday 24 June to announce the opening of the first of two, three-lane bridges being built as part of the State Government's $207 million upgrade. The level crossing was removed near Merinda Park Railway Station. Mr Donnellan said with more than 26,000 vehicles travelling on Thompsons Road every day - "this project is boosting capacity, upgrading intersections and helping Victorians get where they need to go safer and sooner." Drivers will now be diverted onto the new northern road bridge on Thompsons Road, permanently separating road and rail and allowing for the removal of the old level crossing equipment below.

Civic past comes down By Cam Lucadou-Wells The vacated Casey Civic Centre is just a shell of its former self during recent demolition works. The facility and the next door former library are making way for a 79-space car park. Casey’s Bunjil Place Close Out Projects manager Mark Dibsdale said longer-term plans for the site would be later considered and decided by the council “in close consultation” with the community. The $2 million works including bulk earthworks and re-establishing the area for public use were expected to finish by the end of 2018. “The demolition works are in full swing and we are continuing to work hard to ensure that there is minimal disruption to our visitors and the community,” Mr Dibsdale said. The civic centre was originally built in 1978 with further works in 1984. Both facilities have been moved to the nearby $125 million Bunjil Place.

VCAT fight for ‘Old Berwick’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents and Casey Council are poised to fight against a proposed pair of two-storey townhouses within Berwick's 'Hoddle Grid' district. The developer at 36 Wilson Street and their opponents are set to face off at a hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on 28 June. Currently, there's a single-storey brick house on the expansive 890-square-metre lot, next to protected 100-year-old oak trees. The council's Heritage Walk passes the site, as well as the 35 trees planted in 1918 as part of an Avenue of Honour. To neighbours, the proposed 7-metre units with a basement garage are out of character with "old Berwick". "It is off the Richter Scale," says one of the 13 objectors, Paul Bynion. "This style does not respect the area." The few nearby homes that use metal cladding use it sparingly - unlike the proposed de-

sign, Mr Byrion said. "This is Old Berwick - it's distinctly heritage with some really traditional brick and weatherboard homes. "Even the new houses have made a real effort to blend in with the heritage character." Mr Byrion worries that two old trees on Rutland Road by a proposed new driveway into the site.
"It staggers me when people move in here because they love the trees and the first thing they do is put them in danger." According to the developer's arborist report, the trees will be able to tolerate the 12 per cent encroachment onto their root system. The developer described the proposal as a "high quality development with a modern contemporary style that is seen within Berwick" during its submission to Casey last year.
Casey Council refused the proposal in November due to neighbourhood character, density, site coverage, building setbacks, and a lack of separation, landscaping and private open space. The developer has appealed to VCAT. Casey has introduced extra protection for the Hoddle Grid precinct in its proposed Planning Amendment C198. It would set minimum 600-square-metre lots, increased garden areas and maximum nine-metre, two-storey height limits. A recent council report stated the area's character had been "eroded" by new developments. Public feedback had been "very positive" to the protective re-zoning, the report stated. "Residents enjoy the existing wide streetscape and large private open spaces." It noted that a few submitters argued for medium-density development, given that the neighbourhood character had already "changed".
Keen but magistrate says no bail for ‘homeless’ man By Cam Lucadou-Wells A “homeless” man has been refused bail after being allegedly found sheltering in a Narre Warren Scout hall in breach of his bail conditions. At the time, Andrew Keen was bailed to a fixed address with family in Narre Warren South. He was allegedly found sleeping in the Fountain Drive Scout hall by a volunteer about 4pm on 24 June. Keen told the volunteer he was homeless and hiding from the rain, police informant
Acting Sergeant Nicole Spinks told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day. He had taken down two of the hall’s flags which he used to cover windows to conceal his presence, the court heard. Police arrested Keen while hiding on a front lawn in Bethel Close, Narre Warren North that day. He had methamphetamine in his pocket, the court heard. He had been on bail while accused of using a former gym club member’s swipe card to twice break into a Cranbourne gym and stealing $50 in May 2017.
Police opposed bail, concerned that he’d continue to offend to support his drug habit, Act Sgt Spinks said. Keen told the court that he’d stayed at his bail address “every day” but made a “bad error” getting “intoxicated” while out with people on the weekend. He pleaded to be released so he could retain his job as an account manager in St Kilda. He had just got his driver's licence and it was his first steady work in 12 months, he said. “It’s a good job and I really like it. “I want to move forward with everything.
“I know I made a bad error or whatnot on the weekend. I need this job, I need to go forward.” Magistrate Pauline Spencer said Keen did not meet the “exceptional circumstances” bail test despite making “positive” steps. The test required special, unusual and outof-the-ordinary circumstances, Ms Spencer said. “Having a new job is significant for you after 12 months but it does not satisfy exceptional circumstances.” Keen was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 July.

The proposal of the Mayor of the City of Casey to re-name Pioneers Park (or a part of it) to commemorate the late Councillor Moreland seems to me to completely ignore the history of the park. While speaking against the proposal to honour a man who has given long and valuable community service to the City of Casey and the former City of Berwick may seem meanspirited, and it is not easy speaking against a proposal to honour Councillor Moreland, I feel an opinion must be expressed. The park would not have existed unless my parents (Bill and Helen Hudson) had not proposed that the old Berwick Primary School site be purchased for the use of the community, instead of being sold for development. Discussions were in train between the council and a school for the site and there was interest from developers for residential development. My parents established a fund to judge the support of the local community for public ownership of the land. They, along with other families of pioneering heritage and others of, as were my parents, long-standing association with the township, contributed amounts of $10,000 each, and along with many other smaller amounts, that eventually reached a quarter of a million dollars. With this fund local councillors were approached and the municipality, to prove the very strong level of support in the community for the retention of the primary school site for a public park. A prime and early supporter of the project, in council, was Councillor Norma McCausland and an equally strong supporter was the local parliamentary member Tammy Lobato. These two were the driving force in official circles in getting the eventual agreement to acquire the land for public use and not development. There were a number of councillors, at the time, who did not support the project, and indeed suggested that it would never happen. The Berwick Pakenham Historical Society strongly supported the project and it was on their suggestion that the land was eventually called the Pioneers Park. This was to honour all those who had come as pioneers to the district and laid the foundations for the Berwick we know today. Neither my parents, the Wilson, Loveridge or Beaumont families (all of whom were substantial supporters of the initial fund to prove to council that there was substantial interest in retaining the land) looked for recognition in the naming of the Park to be. The park was named to honour all those who had come before. To name the whole or a part of the Pioneers Park for one individual goes completely against the original concept of this. While I have no doubt that Councillor Mick Moreland should be recognised for his service to the City of Casey and former City of Berwick, naming this park after any one person is the wrong thing to do. What will happen in the future when another councillor gives such distinguished service? Will another piece of the Pioneers Park be singled out and another name added? Mayor Ablett is quoted as saying that “part of the park will still retain the Pioneers name - in keeping with the restaurant of the same name”. This quote could be construed as the Park being named after the restaurant, when in fact the restaurant is named for its situation within the Pioneers Park, indeed the restaurant’s name is Primary@Pioneers Park. It is important that the history associated with the acquisition of the former Berwick Primary School Number 40 site for public use, made possible only by a concerted public campaign, and the dedication of the resulting public park to the Pioneers of Berwick, is not forgotten. Mick Moreland certainly deserves public recognition, but I cannot agree to excising a part of the Pioneers Park to commemorate any individual. It would, I believe, be far better if another site were chosen. At a service held in the park for the late councillor Bill Hudson, on the way to his Memorial Service at the Berwick Showgrounds, the following prayer was read by the Reverend Ineke Giles: Prayer of the PARK Pray that those of this and future generations who visit the Pioneers Park of Berwick find it a place of peace, joy and reflection and that all children find it a place of fun and happiness. That the park becomes a place for reflection and remembrance of the members of the Berwick Community who volunteer their time and talents to make this their township a better place in which to live and a community fulfilled. And that they gain the inspiration to give of

their own time and talents so they to can leave a legacy, no matter how small or how great, to this and any community of which they are a part. That the legacy of the Pioneers Park will be one of inspiration to all of the Berwick Community to make Berwick a town that grows on the strength of all who make her their home or place of work or learning. We give thanks to Bill Hudson (without whose inspiration and leadership the Pioneers Park would not have come about) and those members of the community who, in the last years of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century, worked to make this legacy of the Berwick Pioneers Park a reality for the citizens of Berwick. And to the managers and Staff of the City of Casey, who designed, constructed and maintain the Pioneers Park now and in the future. And finally we give thanks to all those who serve local and national and world communities in myriad organisations and in quiet personal ways in an endeavour to help their fellows and make a part of this planet a better place for them having been on it. We pray that this Prayer of the Park will encourage a sense of interest about those citizens of this community who have come before and made Berwick Village the place of beauty that it is today and that future generations will continue to ensure that Berwick Township grows as a place of beauty inspired by the actions of generations past, present and future. Council counts cost Last Tuesday I had the privilege of representing the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc (CRRA) at a Casey Council meeting. Rather than dwell on the unusual behaviour of one particular councillor, I would like to
explain the $1 million plus of savings that the council could have made by following CRRA recommendations over the last two years. These savings include $650,000 allocated to the ‘China Economic Partnership’ and $257,000 allocated to the 'Commit To Casey Campaign’. While the intent of these two expensive council projects may have some merit, for reasons outlined in our submissions, we believe that both these project are deeply flawed and represent a poor use of ratepayer money. Reducing the costs of the mayoral dinner and similar catered events could also provide savings totalling over $30,000 in one year. Additional savings of approximately $74,000 could have been made last year, by buying modest Christmas decorations for Bunjil Place, rather than the extravagant decorations that were purchased. (Media reports indicate the cost of these decorations were over $76,000. At the time of writing this letter, we are still waiting for the City of Casey to confirm how much was actually spent on Christmas decorations at Bunjil Place last year.) These savings are important as our own research indicates that the affordability of rates is a significant issue across Casey. Mortgage stress, low income growth and insufficient rate discounts for pensioners, leave many households struggling to pay annual rates bills that currently average nearly $1,700. Regardless of this, Casey Council has continued to indicate that in the coming years it may seek to increase rates beyond the rate cap limit. The CRRA is working hard to try to ensure this kind of rate increase does not happen. The CRRA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank those councillors who have attempted to ensure some of the savings we have recommended come to fruition. Jailed over guns haul By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unemployed 41-year-old ice addict has claimed that a cluster of home-made fire-arms found at his Cranbourne home were for video props, the Victorian County Court has heard. It was a “very unusual” and “troubling” explanation, said sentencing judge Phillip Coish on 25 June. The accused Christopher Clarke, in a letter to the court, had said “I simply do it for the challenge and mechanics of making them”. Clarke pleaded guilty to possessing a trafficable amount of firearms and imitation firearms that were discovered during a police raid of his home on 11 August 2017. Police also seized 35.7 grams of white crystal substances containing methamphetamine, a machete-like sword, a samurai sword and three other swords as well as gun componentry. None of the six firearms as well as ammunition seized had been securely stored, Judge Coish noted. The cache included a working handgun and side-by-side shotgun, with others capable of discharging with “further work”. Clarke had admitted making a number of the weapons on his lathe, including a pen pistol and an Uzi handgun. He was on bail and a community corrections order at the time. Judge Coish noted there was no evidence that the weapons were associated with other criminal activity and that Clarke was “genuinely remorseful”.
Clarke, who had been heavily using ice every day at the time of the raid, had been drugfree while in remand custody. His drug use had escalated after being made redundant in late 2016. On 8 December, Clarke served four months jail for car theft, drug and driving offences. Surrounding that time, he spent 119 days in pre-sentence detention for the County Court charges. Judge Coish said a community corrections order - on top of jail - was not an appropriate sentence given Clarke had breached a CCO at the time. He set a shorter non-parole period given Clarke’s good rehabilitation prospects if drugfree, family support and his constructive use of his remand time. Clarke was convicted and jailed for 24 months with a non-parole period of one year. His pre-sentence detention period was included in the sentence.

Honouring a good Scout By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren South mother and her teenage son have taken on the challenge of a lifetime, trekking to the foothills of the world’s tallest mountain. From facing freezing temperatures to altitude sickness, and a gruelling 156km trek through the Himalayas to the base camp of Mt Everest, Jenni Walden says “Nothing could compare to what this trip showed me, as a mother, as a leader, as a member of the community.” For Jenni and her son Mitchell, 17, their 15day trek in March was more than just than just an adventure. It was to honour a Scouting brother. At only 17 years of age, the death of Nick Sangston in 2016 left a “massive hole” at the First Cranbourne Scout Group where Jenni was also a group leader. Nick and Mitchell were close scouting friends and just two days prior to Nick’s death by suicide the pair had made a pact that they would climb Mt Everest together one day. “As time passed, Mitchell was determined to bring this dream to reality,” says Jenni. “At the request of the family we took Nick’s replica Australian Scout Medallion to our highest point - Mt Everest Base camp, 5836 metres above sea level. The next day we made it down to the memorial park to lay the medallion.” With the support of their fellow trekkers gathering behind them, Jenni said: “Our thoughts were silent as we reflected on a life lost to us too soon.” Their group of 12 trekkers consisted of five Australians and seven Americans. They also had a guide and an assistant guide.
Mitchell enjoys the views while trekking to base camp of Mt Everest. As they climbed higher, the effects of altitude became more apparent. “The lack of oxygen meant that walking became so much harder and it took longer to get to places as you were constantly stopping to catch your breath.” Jenni and Mitchell found their dietary choices were limited to just vegan foods and their accommodation was were so basic, the walls were paper thin, says Jenni. Climbing to the foothills of Everest has been Jenni’s biggest challenge yet. Every step was in slow motion, she says with “one foot in front of the other” in the face of windy and dusty conditions.
Creek gets needed cleanup By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren students have captured bagloads of trash from a popular section of Cardinia Creek in Berwick. Ten VCAL students at Narre Community Learning Centre honed in on the area beside Akoonah Park, filling five large bags with plastic discards, filled dog-poo bags and polystyrene. The students had driven the project out of a desire to clean up their local environment. The site was chosen in consultation with Casey Council, teacher Bron O’Callaghan said. The group will follow-up for a second cleaning later this year.

Handbag thief tackled By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who allegedly snatched a handbag from a real estate agent's idling vehicle in Berwick has been chased down and arrested by three eye-witnesses, a court has heard. Benjamin Anthony Mammone was refused bail at a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 25 June despite his pleas to see a sick relative and for treatment for his injured shoulder. It heard that Mammone had got in and shut the Audi sedan's driver-side door after the agent exited to retrieve a pointer sign about 3pm on 24 June. The agent yelled at him and he fled from the car with her bag in his hands. He was chased down by witnesses, with his pre-existing shoulder injury aggravated during
the arrest, police say. Mammone was also charged with burglary over allegedly breaking into his close relative's home on 18 June. He allegedly used shears stolen from the garage to jemmy open a sliding door, then fled after triggering an alarm, the court heard. Mammone was identified on CCTV footage, as well as his wallet found at the scene, police informant Acting Sergeant Nicole Spinks told the court. He claimed he had got a taxi to the house, assuming the relative would pay the fare, the court heard. After unsuccessfully trying to rouse her, he broke in to check she was OK, he claimed. Mammone tearily pleaded to the court that he needed to be released because he was the
relative's former carer and that she was gravely ill. "It's important. I've called the ambulance for her on 45 occasions. I've almost had (her) die on me so many times. "I won't see her ... again unless I'm given bail." A Mormon church elder who had "gone through things in the past" would offer him shelter in the meantime, Mammone said. Mammone was also accused of failing to appear at court on 23 May while on bail for drug trafficking as well as impersonating an emergency worker, using a false insignia and handling stolen goods. Act Sgt Spinks said Mammone was sleeping on the streets and friends' places. He had no income after being cut off by Centrelink, yet
was seeking funds for his drug habit. "I believe he has a disregard for his bail conditions and because of that he will continue to reoffend." Magistrate Pauline Spencer said it was a "pretty brazen snatch-and-grab" of the victim's handbag, while Mammone was on a community corrections order and facing other charges. She refused bail due to an unacceptable risk of reoffending. Mammone slumped with his head in hands. He said he'd stolen the handbag because he hadn't eaten for two days. "What am I supposed to do? I'm trying to get by." He was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 August.

2015-16 tax stats released The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released the annual Taxation Statistics report for the 2015-16 financial year. Anaesthetists, internal medicine specialists, psychiatrists, and other medical practitioners filled the second, third, fifth, and sixth spots on the list. Out of almost 1,200 occupations recorded, there were less than 100 occupations where females had an average taxable income higher than males. This included receptionist, school teacher, beautician, and goat farmer. The highest average taxable income of $192,500 was recorded in Sydney’s 2027 postcode which covers Darling Point, Edgecliff, HMAS Rushcutter, and Point Piper. Melbourne’s 3142 postcode, covering Toorak and Hawksburn, was the second highest nationally with an average taxable income of $190,777. New South Wales was home to the lowest earning area. Postcode 2387, covering Bulyeroi and Rowena in far North East NSW, had an average taxable income of around $12,000. Victoria has five of the bottom 10 postcodes with 3482 recording the second lowest average incomes nationally. One in three Australians claimed a deduction for a charitable gift or donation. In total, Australians reported donating $2.8 billion with an average gift size of $211. The ACT is the most generous territory with 41% of residents claiming a deduction followed by 37% of Victorian and 36% of Northern Territorians.

LAND ROCKETS TO NEW PRICE HIGHS By Narelle Coulter LAND PRICES have rocketed in Casey and Cardinia to be the most expensive in any of Melbourne’s growth suburbs. Land in Casey is nearly $100,000 dearer than in Mitchell Shire. Casey has an average land price of $375,000. The price of land shot up 27.6 per cent in the 12 months to March 2018. Cardinia is not far behind, with an average land price of $344,500, an astonishing 41.2 per cent increase over the same period. The average across Melbourne is $314,000. The research, collated for Oliver Hume, shows many first home buyers are priced out of the new home market. In the three months to the end of March, first home buyers accounted for 45 per cent of purchasers, having dropped steadily from 50 per cent at the same time last year. Oliver Hume head of national research George Bougias said the growth rate over the last 12 months was unlikely to be replicated over the next year. “Overall, price growth is now softening as affordability constraints become more important and competition intensifies between developers,“ Mr Bougias said. “Historically, there has also been a strong relationship between residential land and established markets. With the established market now slowing it is to be expected that the greenfield market will also moderate over the short to medium term.“ Parklea manager of sales and marketing Jarod Mills said price growth in Cardinia Shire was driven by a lack of available land. “Casey and Cardinia combined used to contribute around 35-40 per cent of land sales in the growth corridor, however recent data published by RPM Real Estate Group show that this now only attributes 15 per cent - the same as Surf Coast and Geelong. It is a fading growth corridor.“ He said projects were taking far too long to make it to market and as an example he cited Parklea’s Pakenham East development. The Precinct Structure Plan for Pakenham East has taken nine years. Mr Mills predicted prices in Cardinia would remain “exceptionally strong“ as demand continued to outweigh supply. However, he predicted growth would

Ian Harris, a director with KR Peters Real Estate and sales manager for The New Bloom at Clyde North, said the employment precinct slated for land on Cardinia Road, which is expected to deliver thousands of jobs, was helping drive demand.
“People are starting to hear about the employment precinct. They want to live close to jobs. They don’t want to commute to the CBD.“ Mr Harris said land was released at The New Bloom three weeks ago and 43 out of 47 blocks sold on the day. He said communities of buyers with Indian and Sri Lankan heritage were snapping up land at The New Bloom and other estates. “They want to live near people they know,
they want their kids to go to school together. They are creating their own communities. “We have sold four stages so far and at every stage we have found the same thing.“ Mr Harris said in his opinion prices had stablised and buyers were unlikely to see the huge price increases of last year. “At one stage prices were going up $30,000 to $40,000 a stage. It has plateaued a bit. "Builders are crying out for land and developers are trying to keep up.“ ●

INDUSTRY OPPOSITION TO THE OPPOSITION'S DENSITY MOVE THE STATE Opposition’s announcement that it will re-introduce residential planning controls that restrict low density, low impact redevelopment if elected in November, would be a backwards step for housing in Victoria, according to HIA’s Victorian executive director Fiona Nield. Park rename: think again By Cam Lucadou-Wells A member of one of Berwick's founding families is opposed to renaming Pioneers Park after late Casey mayor Mick Morland. Geoff Hudson - a former Berwick resident, now of Longwarry - said it was not easy to speak against honouring Mr Morland who had given "long and valuable community service". But it was important to remember that a "concerted public campaign" helped create the park, he argues. "Pioneers Park commemorates all the people of Berwick, not a single individual." Casey Council recently unveiled a plan to rename the central Berwick park to Mick Morland Reserve to pay tribute to Mr Morland, who died when struck by a car on 24 June 2017. Mr Hudson said the park existed because his parents Bill and Helen Hudson proposed the former Berwick Primary School site should be retained for community use. His parents established a fund to gauge public support and to convince local councillors of the need. The Hudsons and other founding families such as Wilsons, Loveridges and Beaumonts contributed $10,000 each toward the fund. It totalled $250,000. The park had been also strongly supported by councillor at the time, Norma McCausland and then-MP Tammy Lobato, Mr Hudson said.
None of the families sought to be recognised individually in the park's name, he said. "The park was named to honour all those who had come before. "To name the whole or a part of the Pioneers Park for one individual goes completely against the original concept of this. "Whilst I have no doubt that Cr Mick Morland should be recognised for his service to the City of Casey and former City of Berwick naming this park after any one person is the wrong thing to do. "It would, I believe, be far better if another site were chosen." Mayor Geoff Ablett recently said part of the park would retain the Pioneers Park name - in keeping with the adjoining caf¨¦ Primary@ Pioneer's Park. The proposed name would pay tribute to a man who contributed much to Rotary and the community. "We did lose a living legend and I'm glad that we can name something after him because it's so deserved. It's a big part of Berwick that he loves "It's still hard to believe he's not with us." The name change has been given in-principle approval by the state's Registrar of Geographic Names. Public submissions are open for the proposal.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. John Henry goes national By Russell Bennett The students involved in the John Henry Primary School aerobics team are not only prodigiously talented in their craft, they also have nerves of steel. They're used to performing in front of large crowds - including their peers - and panels of judges, but in August they'll take that to a whole new level as 'The Flames' (made up largely of Grade 3 students) head to the Gold Coast to perform at the nationals. The Pakenham-based primary school had two teams make it through to the state championships, where they finished second and third in their section. The first and second placed teams were invited through to the Australian championships in Queensland, meaning The Flames had booked their spot. John Henry Primary School principal Tanya Roberts is an integral part of its aerobics program, along with Alice Robjant and Charli Andrew. They can't wait for their students to again get the chance to show what they can do on the big stage. "We just asked who wanted to try out for John Henry Aerobics," Tanya said of the team's beginnings. "Anyone could try out across those year levels (Grade 3 and 4). We only started with two teams. Being a new school, we knew Alice and I had time in it so we knew at that point the two of us could commit the time." Tanya explained that Charli had done a power of work in setting the group up initially, being a dance teacher and being involved in the performing arts. "I suspect next year when we put it out, there could be more (students involved) so it'll be us trying to talk some of the other staff into coming on board too," she said.

Tanya estimated that when the students competed in the state championships, it could have been in front of more than 1000 people. "It was at the arena in Geelong where the
Supercats play, so it was big," she said. "You're just there on a stage, and it's on the basketball court with the stage built in it so you're not hidden behind curtains. "When you come out you can see people watching you, and you can see the panel of 15 judges sitting in front of you. It takes a fair bit of courage." Tanya said that with John Henry Primary now having 680 students, when the aerobics teams performs in front of their school mates, that's a big crowd in itself. "It's all about teamwork," she said. "It's the teamwork of understanding this isn't an individual game and when I jump I have to jump in time with everyone else. "The improvement from when we competed in the prelims to qualify for the state titles, compared to the state titles - you wouldn't even think they were the same group of kids. "These guys have practiced really hard. Before the state championships they practiced every day for an hour - they were here at 8am before school." But the journey to Queensland to compete later this year is an expensive one, and the students involved have undertaken some of their own fundraising activities to help cover the cost. Incredibly, a range of local organisations have also donated to their cause because they know just what a great opportunity this is for them. One of the participants, Arwen, said it perfectly when she said she loves being part of such a special group, one that she can enjoy sharing this experience with.

The Pakenham Warriors made it two wins from three games in Big V basketball action over the weekend. The Division 2 Men made the long trip up to Mildura and suffered a tough loss to the Heat. After jumping out to a 10-point quartertime lead, that was trimmed to just three at half-time. But the Warriors responded and headed into the final term with a 10-point lead. Unfortunately, the Heat came out firing in the final term and took the lead with under one minute remaining, running out 83-78 winners. Josh Bjelan (19 points, 4 rebounds) topscored for the Warriors, while Brad Bridgewater (15 points, 13 rebounds) recorded an impressive double-double. Pakenham fall to 7-8 for the season, sitting seventh on the ladder, two wins behind Melton in sixth. The Youth League 2 Men scored a hardfought win over Keysborough, 60-64, on Saturday night. In a back and forth battle, the Warriors led by one-point at the final break and held their nerve down the stretch. Ned Weideman (21 points, 5 rebounds) led the game in scoring, while Nathan Dodgson (9 rebounds, 8 points, 6 assists) did a bit of everything for the Warriors. Pakenham (11-6) sit fifth on the ladder, two wins clear of Mornington in sixth. The Youth League 2 Women made light work of Mornington at home on Saturday night. Despite missing star player Ellie Coutts, the Warriors completely dominated on both ends of the court from start to finish, claiming a massive 92-56 win. It was a total team performance, with every player scoring and the Breakers simply had no answers as their offence stalled due to the Warriors defensive pressure. Sarah Thomson (23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals) took control of the game from the outset and was well supported by Rhiannon Gallagher (15 points, 4 rebounds) and Georgia Hillard (9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) against a Breakers side coached by former Warriors coach Darren Thomas.
Quietly-spoken, young football star Josh Greig simply lets his game do the talking. The talented midfielder, playing his footy with Pakenham Lions Junior Football Club, will get the chance to showcase his wares when he lines up for the Victorian Under 12 football side in the coming months, representing John Henry Primary School in Pakenham. The side jets off for Canberra for the School Sport Australia 12 Years and Under Australian Football Championships from 11 to 18 August. It's an achievement not lost on the humble youngster, who just wants to put his best foot forward. "I feel good, and I feel proud to be chosen," he said. "I am really proud to represent the Victorian team." The side - which will be coached by David Blackburn, with Beaconsfield senior coach Leigh McQuillen also an assistant coach for the team - is made up of 23 talented young players from across the state. Despite being an avid Essendon fan, a certain Richmond superstar has caught the eye of Josh as he looks to build his game further. "I kind of want to play like Dustin Martin, he's just strong on the ball, he's a great player - I like his strength and his personality too," he said. And as for Martin's famous fend-off? "I'm still working on it," Josh said with a grin. Martin is well known for winning a premiership with the Tigers in 2017, as well as capturing the Brownlow and Norm Smith in the same year, and the young Lion is certainly keeping pace with a host of medals in 2017. "I've been enjoying it a lot at Pakenham, we got a premiership last year which was good, and I also got league best and fairest," he said. "The league best and fairest and making it into this team definitely makes me very proud." Josh prides himself on an ability to "kick plenty of goals, break down tackles and mark well" and hopes to emulate a superb 2017 season again.

But the youngster certainly faces a decision in coming years about which sport he prefers, with Josh also a highly talented basketballer with the Pakenham Warriors, and only recently came back from some representation basketball only a few weeks ago. "I kind of prefer footy a bit more, maybe because I'm just a little bit better, but at this stage I'm not sure what I'll do," he said. But he certainly sees some similarities between the two sports, and believes they help him excel in different ways. "When you dribble in basketball, you get the feeling with your hands, and it's like that with football in a lot of ways too," he said. Ahead of what is set to be an exciting journey for the young star, he said without the help of those around him, he couldn't have made it this far. "I want to thank Dad, and my coaches as well," he said. "My coach David Auld, and my assistant coach Paul Jones, have helped me getting my kicking right, and my goals and position. National floorball arrives aged groups from under-11 to under-17s. Floorball continues to go from strength to strength and the 2017 Championships saw participation increase by 50 per cent from 2016. This year, numbers will again increase, with competition set to be fiercer than ever. The fast-paced sport is thrilling to watch and exciting to participate in. Floorball is a mix between field hockey, ice hockey, soccer and basketball and with five players and a goalie per team, there is plenty of space to run and create during a game. Pakenham will be looking to defend its crown in the under-17 age-group after defeating Peninsula in an exhilarating and nail-biting grand final in 2017.
