Citizens’ arrest

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who allegedly snatched a handbag from a real estate agent's idling vehicle in Berwick has been chased down and arrested by three eye-witnesses, a court has heard.

Benjamin Anthony Mammone was refused bail at a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 25 June despite his pleas to see a sick relative and for treatment for his injured shoulder.

It heard that Mammone had got in and shut the Audi sedan's driver-side door after the agent exited to retrieve a pointer sign about 3pm on 24 June.

The agent yelled at him and he fled from the car with her bag in his hands.

He was chased down by witnesses, with his pre-existing shoulder injury aggravated during

Mammone was also charged with burglary over allegedly breaking into his close relative's home on 18 June.

He allegedly used shears stolen from the garage to jemmy open a sliding door, then fled after triggering an alarm, the court heard.

Mammone was identified on CCTV footage, as well as his wallet found at the scene, police informant Acting Sergeant Nicole Spinks told the court.

He claimed he had got a taxi to the house, assuming the relative would pay the fare, the court heard.

After unsuccessfully trying to rouse her, he broke in to check she was OK, he claimed.

relative's former carer and that she was gravely ill.

"It's important. I've called the ambulance for her on 45 occasions. I've almost had (her) die on me so many times.

"I won't see her ... again unless I'm given bail."

A Mormon church elder who had "gone through things in the past" would offer him shelter in the meantime, Mammone said.

Mammone was also accused of failing to appear at court on 23 May while on bail for drug trafficking as well as impersonating an emergency worker, using a false insignia and handling stolen goods.

was seeking funds for his drug habit.

"I believe he has a disregard for his bail conditions and because of that he will continue to reoffend."

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said it was a "pretty brazen snatch-and-grab" of the victim's handbag, while Mammone was on a community corrections order and facing other charges.

She refused bail due to an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

Mammone slumped with his head in hands.

He said he'd stolen the handbag because he hadn't eaten for two days.

"What am I supposed to do? I'm trying to get by."

He was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 August.

What's the most interesting part about being a senior keeper at Moonlit Sanctuary?

The variation of day to day work. I normally have a plan of what I would like to achieve for the week, but when you work with animals you have to be able to think on your feet as different things come up almost every day. Although this can sometimes be stressful it is also very exciting and keeps you thinking outside the box.

What is something people don't know about you?

I grew up in Launceston, Tasmania. Growing up on a semi-rural property, I had a love of animals from a young age and I knew early on in my life that I wanted to work with them.

Some nights, we used to hear Tasmanian Devils in our back yard (sometimes breaking into our bantam hut!)

What is the most memorable moment in your life?

I have had many memorable moments in my life, but one of my career highlights so far, has to have been when I got to see some of the critically endangered Orange-bellied parrots that we bred be released into the wild. It was quite amazing to actually see the birds fly out of their enclosure and realise they were in the wild, they flocked together then took off to the feeding grounds. It was truly thrilling.

What is your favourite television show?

I don't know ... I like Masterchef at this time of year, but I don't really watch that much TV. Which AFL football team do you follow?

Collingwood.

What is your favourite place to visit in Victoria?

I enjoy camping down at the Otways and going to Phillip Island (not during the busy period though). I also love going to wineries, I live and work on the Mornington Peninsula where there are around 91 wineries, so sometimes

Park rename: think again

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A member of one of Berwick's founding families is opposed to renaming Pioneers Park after late Casey mayor Mick Morland.

Geoff Hudson - a former Berwick resident, now of Longwarry - said it was not easy to speak against honouring Mr Morland who had given "long and valuable community service".

But it was important to remember that a "concerted public campaign" helped create the park, he argues.

"Pioneers Park commemorates all the people of Berwick, not a single individual."

Casey Council recently unveiled a plan to rename the central Berwick park to Mick Morland Reserve to pay tribute to Mr Morland, who died when struck by a car on 24 June 2017.

Mr Hudson said the park existed because his parents Bill and Helen Hudson proposed the former Berwick Primary School site should

be retained for community use.

His parents established a fund to gauge public support and to convince local councillors of the need.

The Hudsons and other founding families such as Wilsons, Loveridges and Beaumonts contributed $10,000 each toward the fund. It totalled $250,000.

The park had been also strongly supported by councillor at the time, Norma McCausland and then-MP Tammy Lobato, Mr Hudson said.

None of the families sought to be recognised individually in the park's name, he said.

"The park was named to honour all those who had come before.

"To name the whole or a part of the Pioneers Park for one individual goes completely against the original concept of this.

"Whilst I have no doubt that Cr Mick Morland should be recognised for his service to the City of Casey and former City of Berwick nam-

ing this park after any one person is the wrong thing to do.

"It would, I believe, be far better if another site were chosen."

Mayor Geoff Ablett recently said part of the park would retain the Pioneers Park name - in keeping with the adjoining caf¨¦ Primary@ Pioneer's Park.

The proposed name would pay tribute to a man who contributed much to Rotary and the community.

"We did lose a living legend and I'm glad that we can name something after him because it's so deserved. It's a big part of Berwick that he loves "It's still hard to believe he's not with us."

The name change has been given in-principle approval by the state's Registrar of Geographic Names.

Public submissions are open for the proposal.

A tribute to Mick Morland has drawn some backlash.

Book bound by struggles at home and abroad

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's a book that bridges cultures, generations and nations.

From Timor-Leste to Australia tells the courageous survival stories of seven East Timorese families who escaped invasion of their homelands and settled in Casey.

Gleneagles Secondary College students conducted the interviews of family members - often the first time that they had shared the full story of their mass exiles between 1975 and 1999.

Their stories were compiled and edited by former Gleneagles principal Jan Trezise, who masterminded the project over two-and-ahalf years.

"A family member said it was difficult to tell their story," Ms Trezise said.

"It was emotional and traumatic but it was also healing."

One of the stories is Endeavour Hills's Berta Santos - who miraculously survived violent civil war and the Indonesian invasion in 1975.

It claimed the lives of many of her loved ones, including her first husband.

For her the story is so important. Until now, even her eight children did not know the whole truth, Ms Santos said.

"A lot of people don't know other people's history. They get to know their backgrounds - it is very interesting."

For students Tirtani Santosa and Nick Stamatopoulos who helped collate her story, it was an eye-opener.

"To hear there were so many families that had to deal with these struggles. They are here telling their stories and I'm thinking I can't believe this is happening," Nick said.

"I felt so privileged that they're willing to tell it to us."

In 1979, Ms Santos made the fateful decision to flee to the Indonesian capital Jakarta

Three years later, the International Red Cross arranged for her children's escape.

Together, they flew from Jakarta to the safe shores of Portugal.

Later they settled in Australia, where she long campaigned for a free East Timor up until

the 1999 independence vote. She helped refugees settle in south-east Melbourne as well as those stricken in Timor itself.

Last year she received the Ordem de Timor Leste (Order of Timor Leste) in recognition of her determined contribution.

Ms Trezise says the book also tells of a time when Australia had a more humane approach to refugees, when families were able to be

more easily reunited on our shores.

"Most of us are refugees and have interesting stories.

"I think the book is a symbol of so many other families."

Civic past comes down

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The vacated Casey Civic Centre is just a shell of its former self during recent demolition works.

The facility and the next door former library are making way for a 79-space car park.

Casey's Bunjil Place Close Out Projects manager Mark Dibsdale said longer-term plans for the site would be later considered and decided by the council "in close consultation" with the community.

The $2 million works including bulk earthworks and re-establishing the area for public use were expected to finish by the end of 2018.

"The demolition works are in full swing and we are continuing to work hard to ensure that there is minimal disruption to our visitors and the community," Mr Dibsdale said.

The civic centre was originally built in 1978 with further works in 1984.

Both facilities have been moved to the nearby $125 million Bunjil Place.

Jailed for firearms haul

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unemployed 41-year-old ice addict has claimed that a cluster of home-made firearms found at his Cranbourne home were for video props, the Victorian County Court has heard.

It was a "very unusual" and "troubling" explanation, said sentencing judge Phillip Coish on 25 June.

The accused Christopher Clarke, in a letter to the court, had said "I simply do it for the challenge and mechanics of making them".

Clarke pleaded guilty to possessing a trafficable amount of firearms and imitation firearms that were discovered during a police raid

of his home on 11 August 2017.

Police also seized 35.7 grams of white crystal substances containing methamphetamine, a machete-like sword, a samurai sword and three other swords as well as gun componentry.

None of the six firearms as well as ammunition seized had been securely stored, Judge Coish noted.

The cache included a working handgun and side-by-side shotgun, with others capable of discharging with "further work".

Clarke had admitted making a number of the weapons on his lathe, including a pen pis-

tol and an Uzi handgun.

He was on bail and a community corrections order at the time.

Judge Coish noted there was no evidence that the weapons were associated with other criminal activity and that Clarke was "genuinely remorseful".

Clarke, who had been heavily using ice every day at the time of the raid, had been drugfree while in remand custody. His drug use had escalated after being made redundant in late 2016.

On 8 December, Clarke served four months jail for car theft, drug and driving offences.

Electoral shake-up as Holt voters moved to Bruce

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Federal voters in northern Holt have been shifted into a new electorate, under a dramatic recasting by the Australian Electoral Commission.

Doveton, Eumemmerring, Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Lysterfield South and part of Narre Warren have been excised from the seat long held by Labor MP Anthony Byrne.

The suburbs will become part of the Bruce electorate held by Labor's Julian Hill.

Under the federal redistribution, Holt shifts south annexing parts of the Flinders electorate including Botanic Ridge, Devon Meadows, Clyde and Casey's coastal villages.

Casey Council are declining to comment on allegations that a councillor had 'trolled' a state political candidate's Facebook page.

Cr Milla Gilic was accused of making persistent, repetitive comments under the pseudonym 'Misa Frances Quinzel' on 15 posts by Narre Warren South ALP candidate Gary Maas.

The Quinzel account had, at one stage, appeared to have used a profile picture of Cr Gilic.

Since Star News's report, the account appears to be out of action.

Mr Maas reported the Quinzel comments to Facebook, leading to them being removed.

When asked if Casey was investigating the issue, a spokesman said: "This is a private matter. We won't be offering any comment."

The proposal of the Mayor of the City of Casey to re-name Pioneers Park (or a part of it) to commemorate the late Councillor Moreland seems to me to completely ignore the history of the park.

While speaking against the proposal to honour a man who has given long and valuable community service to the City of Casey and the former City of Berwick may seem meanspirited, and it is not easy speaking against a proposal to honour Councillor Moreland, I feel an opinion must be expressed.

The park would not have existed unless my parents (Bill and Helen Hudson) had not proposed that the old Berwick Primary School site be purchased for the use of the community, instead of being sold for development.

Discussions were in train between the council and a school for the site and there was interest from developers for residential development. My parents established a fund to judge the support of the local community for public ownership of the land. They, along with other families of pioneering heritage and others of, as were my parents, long-standing association with the township, contributed amounts of $10,000 each, and along with many other smaller amounts, that eventually reached a quarter of a million dollars. With this fund local councillors were approached and the municipality, to prove the very strong level of support in the community for the retention of the primary school site for a public park.

A prime and early supporter of the project, in council, was Councillor Norma McCausland and an equally strong supporter was the local parliamentary member Tammy Lobato. These two were the driving force in official circles in getting the eventual agreement to acquire the land for public use and not development.

There were a number of councillors, at the time, who did not support the project, and indeed suggested that it would never happen.

The Berwick Pakenham Historical Society strongly supported the project and it was on their suggestion that the land was eventually called the Pioneers Park. This was to honour all those who had come as pioneers to the district and laid the foundations for the Berwick we know today. Neither my parents, the Wilson, Loveridge or Beaumont families (all of whom were substantial supporters of the initial fund to prove to council that there was substantial interest in retaining the land) looked for recognition in the naming of the Park to be. The park was named to honour all those who had come before.

To name the whole or a part of the Pioneers Park for one individual goes completely against the original concept of this.

While I have no doubt that Councillor Mick Moreland should be recognised for his service to the City of Casey and former City of Berwick, naming this park after any one person is the wrong thing to do.

What will happen in the future when another councillor gives such distinguished service? Will another piece of the Pioneers Park be singled out and another name added?

Mayor Ablett is quoted as saying that “part of the park will still retain the Pioneers name - in keeping with the restaurant of the same name”. This quote could be construed as the Park being named after the restaurant, when in fact the restaurant is named for its situation within the Pioneers Park, indeed the restaurant’s name is Primary@Pioneers Park.

It is important that the history associated with the acquisition of the former Berwick Primary School Number 40 site for public use, made possible only by a concerted public campaign, and the dedication of the resulting public park to the Pioneers of Berwick, is not forgotten.

Mick Moreland certainly deserves public recognition, but I cannot agree to excising a part of the Pioneers Park to commemorate any individual. It would, I believe, be far better if another site were chosen.

At a service held in the park for the late councillor Bill Hudson, on the way to his Memorial Service at the Berwick Showgrounds, the following prayer was read by the Reverend Ineke Giles: Prayer of the PARK Pray that those of this and future generations who visit the Pioneers Park of Berwick find it a place of peace, joy and reflection and that all children find it a place of fun and happiness.

That the park becomes a place for reflection and remembrance of the members of the Berwick Community who volunteer their time and talents to make this their township a better place in which to live and a community fulfilled.

And that they gain the inspiration to give of

That the legacy of the Pioneers Park will be one of inspiration to all of the Berwick Community to make Berwick a town that grows on the strength of all who make her their home or place of work or learning.

We give thanks to Bill Hudson (without whose inspiration and leadership the Pioneers Park would not have come about) and those members of the community who, in the last years of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century, worked to make this legacy of the Berwick Pioneers Park a reality for the citizens of Berwick.

And to the managers and Staff of the City of Casey, who designed, constructed and maintain the Pioneers Park now and in the future.

And finally we give thanks to all those who serve local and national and world communities in myriad organisations and in quiet personal ways in an endeavour to help their fellows and make a part of this planet a better place for them having been on it.

Council counts cost Last Tuesday I had the privilege of representing the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc (CRRA) at a Casey Council meeting.

Rather than dwell on the unusual behaviour of one particular councillor, I would like to

explain the $1 million plus of savings that the council could have made by following CRRA recommendations over the last two years.

These savings include $650,000 allocated to the ‘China Economic Partnership’ and $257,000 allocated to the 'Commit To Casey Campaign’.

While the intent of these two expensive council projects may have some merit, for reasons outlined in our submissions, we believe that both these project are deeply flawed and represent a poor use of ratepayer money.

Reducing the costs of the mayoral dinner and similar catered events could also provide savings totalling over $30,000 in one year. Additional savings of approximately $74,000 could have been made last year, by buying modest Christmas decorations for Bunjil Place, rather than the extravagant decorations that were purchased. (Media reports indicate the cost of these decorations were over $76,000. At the time of writing this letter, we are still waiting for the City of Casey to confirm how much was actually spent on Christmas decorations at Bunjil Place last year.)

These savings are important as our own research indicates that the affordability of rates is a significant issue across Casey. Mortgage stress, low income growth and insufficient rate discounts for pensioners, leave many households struggling to pay annual rates bills that currently average nearly $1,700. Regardless of this, Casey Council has continued to indicate that in the coming years it may seek to increase rates beyond the rate cap limit.

The CRRA is working hard to try to ensure this kind of rate increase does not happen.

The CRRA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank those councillors who have attempted to ensure some of the savings we have recommended come to fruition.

VCAT fight for ‘Old Berwick’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents and Casey Council are poised to fight against a proposed pair of two-storey townhouses within Berwick's 'Hoddle Grid' district.

The developer at 36 Wilson Street and their opponents are set to face off at a hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on 28 June.

Currently, there's a single-storey brick house on the expansive 890-square-metre lot, next to protected 100-year-old oak trees.

The council's Heritage Walk passes the site, as well as the 35 trees planted in 1918 as part of an Avenue of Honour.

To neighbours, the proposed 7-metre units with a basement garage are out of character with "old Berwick".

"It is off the Richter Scale," says one of the 13 objectors, Paul Bynion.

"This style does not respect the area."

sign, Mr Byrion said.

"This is Old Berwick - it's distinctly heritage with some really traditional brick and weatherboard homes.

"Even the new houses have made a real effort to blend in with the heritage character."

Mr Byrion worries that two old trees on Rutland Road by a proposed new driveway into the site.

"It staggers me when people move in here because they love the trees and the first thing they do is put them in danger."

According to the developer's arborist report, the trees will be able to tolerate the 12 per cent encroachment onto their root system.

The developer described the proposal as a "high quality development with a modern contemporary style that is seen within Berwick" during its submission to Casey last year.

Casey Council refused the proposal in November due to neighbourhood character, density, site coverage, building setbacks, and a lack of separation, landscaping and private open space.

The developer has appealed to VCAT. Casey has introduced extra protection for the Hoddle Grid precinct in its proposed Planning Amendment C198.

It would set minimum 600-square-metre lots, increased garden areas and maximum nine-metre, two-storey height limits.

A recent council report stated the area's character had been "eroded" by new developments.

Public feedback had been "very positive" to the protective re-zoning, the report stated.

"Residents enjoy the existing wide streetscape and large private open spaces."

It noted that a few submitters argued for medium-density development, given that the neighbourhood character had already "changed".

Keen but magistrate says no bail for ‘homeless’ man

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A “homeless” man has been refused bail after being allegedly found sheltering in a Narre Warren Scout hall in breach of his bail conditions.

At the time, Andrew Keen was bailed to a fixed address with family in Narre Warren South.

He was allegedly found sleeping in the Fountain Drive Scout hall by a volunteer about 4pm on 24 June.

Keen told the volunteer he was homeless and hiding from the rain, police informant

Acting Sergeant Nicole Spinks told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day.

He had taken down two of the hall’s flags which he used to cover windows to conceal his presence, the court heard.

Police arrested Keen while hiding on a front lawn in Bethel Close, Narre Warren North that day.

He had methamphetamine in his pocket, the court heard.

He had been on bail while accused of using a former gym club member’s swipe card to twice break into a Cranbourne gym and stealing $50 in May 2017.

Police opposed bail, concerned that he’d continue to offend to support his drug habit, Act Sgt Spinks said.

Keen told the court that he’d stayed at his bail address “every day” but made a “bad error” getting “intoxicated” while out with people on the weekend.

He pleaded to be released so he could retain his job as an account manager in St Kilda.

He had just got his driver's licence and it was his first steady work in 12 months, he said.

“It’s a good job and I really like it.

“I want to move forward with everything.

“I know I made a bad error or whatnot on the weekend. I need this job, I need to go forward.”

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said Keen did not meet the “exceptional circumstances” bail test despite making “positive” steps.

The test required special, unusual and outof-the-ordinary circumstances, Ms Spencer said.

“Having a new job is significant for you after 12 months but it does not satisfy exceptional circumstances.”

Keen was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 July.

Creek gets a cleanup

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren students have captured bagloads of trash from a popular section of Cardinia Creek in Berwick.

Ten VCAL students at Narre Community Learning Centre honed in on the area beside Akoonah Park, filling five large bags with plastic discards, filled dog-poo bags and polystyrene.

The students had driven the project out of a desire to clean up their local environment. The site was chosen in consultation with Casey Council, teacher Bron O’Callaghan said.

The group will follow-up for a second cleaning later this year.

Family ‘terrified’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drug-addled man has wielded a vacuum cleaner pipe and threatened to kill his family during a "terrifying" encounter, a court has heard on 25 June.

The man had initially left the Cranbourne North house after his partner called police about 3am on 30 May, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told.

He returned just over an hour later, waking his nine-year-old child with his banging on the bathroom window.

Despite the partner's attempts to keep him calm, he got inside the house.

He grabbed the vacuum cleaner pole with both hands in an "aggressive manner" and told her she was not to call the police again.

He told her that he would kill "all of us" prior to the police's arrival.

By stealth, the wife called police and tried to remove the children into a car. He struck at the car, setting off its alarms.

He wrestled her and tried to snatch away the children.

On his arrest, the man later told police that he'd been awake for the past two-and-a-half days. He was remanded in custody up until the court hearing.

His lawyer Farah Banihali told the court the man had successfully completed a drug treatment order but recently suffered a meth relapse due to losing his courier job.

In the past, the man's dishonesty offences were fuelled by heroin abuse, the court heard.

There was no record of previous family violence or violent crime in general.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said the children would have been "terrified" by the encounter.

The man was served a full intervention order to protect the children, and a limited-contact order for his ex-partner.

"Even though ... I see you don't have a history of violence or family violence, you've been high for a number of days (at the time of the offending) and you weren't acting in a normal way.

"If you choose to put the drugs in your mouth you have to accept the consequences."

Ms Spencer gave a sentence indication of three weeks' time-served in custody plus a long-term corrections order.

She deferred sentence to release the man on the CISP bail program to help him get emergency accommodation.

He was set to next appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 23 July for judicial monitoring.

‘Scared’ partner attacked in front of kids

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court to assaulting his ex-wife and repeatedly breaching an intervention order at Narre Warren as well as stealing coins from two automatic laundries.

During a fight over money in May last year, the 41-year-old put his face up close to her at the kitchen table and told her: "When you go to your mum's, don't make up f***ing stories about me.

"Don't be scared. I'm not going to touch you," he said - just before twice pulling her neck back by the hair.

The assault was witnessed by two of the family's children. The couple separated that month.

The man later told police there had been "a

few disagreements", "a few debates", "a few misunderstandings" in the home.

He didn't remember pulling her by the hair; he'd never hurt the partner, he told police.

He was also charged with attending the address in defiance of a full intervention order in August, and failing to appear at court twice this year.

The man and a co-accused were also involved in using a wire with a sticky end to extract coins from machines at a Burwood East laundry and a Mitcham laundry.

The total damage bill at the Burwood East laundry as a result was $430, including the theft.

A defence lawyer told the court on 25 June that the man had been of good character for most of his life.

He had been struck down by unemployment, a bank foreclosing the family's home as well as separating from the family, the court heard.

The man recently attended a men's behavioural change program in an attempt to reconcile the family.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer told him in that case he had to heed the intervention order.

"You'll have to stop thinking of yourself and start thinking of your children.

"What you're doing is making things worse for yourself, for your partner and for your kids.

"You're hurting her. She's scared and worried for her safety - (she wouldn't) go to the police lightly, you don't do that."

The man was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order.

Video clue for police

By Brendan Rees Police hope CCTV images will identify those responsible for an alleged theft of an excavator and trailer from a business in Cranbourne.

Narre Warren police are investigating the Friday 25 May incident.

They believe up to three people were at the High Street address when the Vermeer mini loader excavator, worth $44,000 and trailer, worth $9,000 were taken between 3.40am and 4am.

Police say the intruders cut the fence to the business before forcing a lock on the trailer. It's believed two cars were used in the offence.

Investigators released still images of a man they believe may be able to assist their enquiries.

They are urging anyone who may be able to identify the man or have any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au and quote the incident number 180181716.

Police hope the man in this image will assist with their enquiries.

‘Boredom’ made me do it

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "bored" Cranbourne North man has been jailed over a raft of theft, weapon and drug offences while on a community corrections order.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to breaking into a Dandenong South business and stealing a tandem trailer and a ride-on lawn mower worth more than $23,500 in September, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

After stealing number plates from a nearby parked truck, the disqualified driver towed the loot to his home - a trip that was tracked by the mower's GPS security device.

He was found by police with two zip-lock bags of 'ice', the stolen property and burgling gear such as gloves, bolt-cutters and oxyacetylene torch.

On 27 December, the man sat on a shower

floor with a sawn-off shotgun threatening to harm himself after an argument with his partner at home in which he refused to go to a Drug Court appointment.

Police set up a cordon and arrested him.

They found a rifle scope, a dagger, a bow and arrows, and 34 supersonic bullets in his home.

The accused, who was prohibited from having weapons, was involuntarily admitted for psychiatric treatment.

In a police interview, he said he'd had the shotgun for many years despite being raided many times by police.

The man also pleaded guilty to trying to break into a Ringwood car park's ticket machine using numerous tools including a screwdriver in July 2017.

He also stole of tub of items from a timber yard at a Bunnings retailer in Dandenong South in September, and was charged with

drug driving and several counts of unlicensed driving.

He had also gambled at an Officer venue in breach of a bail night curfew to "cheer up for my birthday" in February. He rode there unlicensed on an unregistered motorcycle with altered plates.

A defence lawyer told the court that Longley - who had made several suicide attempts - had recently improved after his first stint of mental health medication.

"It's now or never" for Longley to sort himself out, the lawyer said.

The accused had been promised full-time work, which wouldn't allow him time to think about doing crime, the court heard.

"A lot of the offences were committed through boredom," the lawyer said.

"He's had enough and he doesn't want to do jail anymore."

Bail laws leading to ‘injustice’: lawyers

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Legal-aid lawyers say toughened bail laws targeting violent crime may lead to less serious offenders being unfairly locked-up.

Victoria Legal Aid's criminal law executive director Dan Nicholson said more people with "relatively minor offending" were being "escalated" to the higher bail categories.

"In these scenarios, the clients must demonstrate exceptional circumstances or compelling reasons to be granted bail, even when they are unlikely to face a term of imprisonment if found guilty."

Mr Nicholson was particularly concerned about "vulnerable young people" spending time in custody and often in police cells for "multiple but not necessarily serious offences".

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Victoria Police supported the changes to strengthen the Bail Act and implements recommendations made in a review by Justice Paul Coghlan.

In announcing the bail laws in May 2017, the State Government stated that bail would be refused for serious violent and sexual offences such as aggravated home invasion and aggravated car jacking - except in exceptional circumstances.

The test also extends to those committing serious indictable offences on bail, summons, parole or under sentence.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula said at the time: "We're overhauling our bail system to ensure that it's harder for people accused of serious and violent crimes to get bail."

Man cashes in with fakes A man has allegedly passed off counterfeit notes at several shops in Berwick and Mornington.

The man had paid for items using the notes on 26 and 27 May. Mornington Peninsula Crime Investigation Unit police have released CCTV still images of a male who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The laws introduced on 21 May may lead to people pleading guilty to get out of custody, even when police evidence is incomplete or untested. It may lead to people landing needless criminal records.

"This can put our lawyers in a difficult position, especially when this is the first time they have seen the client (and) have had limited opportunity to examine the evidence and provide proper advice."

It was too early to tell the impact on prisoner numbers in Dandenong police cells since the tighter laws, Mr Nicholson said.

But there was an overall increased demand across the justice system.

He warned if there was higher demand, it led to delays presenting people to court even via an audio-visual link.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said the offending was "serious in itself" and "made more serious by the repeated nature".

She noted the "very bad combination" of significant thefts, drugs and the "very concerning" possession of two firearms as a prohibited person.

She took into account that it had just come to light the man was suffering mental illness at the time, she said.

"I'm hoping with the medication, now you'll be in a better position."

He was jailed for 16 months, with a non-parole period of eight months that would include strict drug testing and mentoring.

A police application for the forfeiture of the motorcycle was opposed by the man's family.

That was adjourned to 4 July.

Casey Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne, who was presenting his submission of matters related to draft revised Council Plan 2017-21 and the 2018/19 Budget at a Casey council meeting on Tuesday 19 June, said “Over a million dollar of savings could’ve been made through this year’s budget and last.”

Cr Sam Aziz questioned Mr Browne as to how he arrived at that figure saying “It’s very easy for you to turn up here and throw around the mantra that this is the tip of the iceberg when in fact it’s not.”

“I called you previously the ‘Casey LIE’ because I can’t get a word of truth out of you.

That’s stands also by the way Losers in Exile,” Cr Aziz said in front of a packed public gallery.

Mr Browne said the association was “left scratching their heads” with what he claimed was 9.3 per cent increase in waste collection rate.

He also said: “We are really shocked and dismayed to see the figure of $257,000 being put forward” for the Commit to Casey campaign, whereby Casey Council is calling on the State Government and Opposition to fix Casey’s roads and extend the Cranbourne rail line.

Cr Aziz told Mr Browne he was only interested in “evidence based decision making.”

“The City of Casey is one of the tightest managed council’s in the state and you don’t have to take my word for it, just go and ask the Auditor-General that very question.”

A debate exchanged between the pair, with Cr Aziz interjecting saying “I’m actually elected by the people of Casey and you’re not, you’re just self-appointed.”

Mr Browne said: “I really do find it offensive the way you’ve spoken to me Councillor Aziz.”

With council’s China Engagement Strategy, Mr Browne said $650,000 million had been allocated to china over a two year period and “We’re seeing very little value for money; there’s no review process.”

Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said he made “no apology” for advocating to governments for the Commit to Casey campaign.

“We see this as a big opportunity with two elections coming up in the next 12 months,” he said.

“We’re going to go for the biggest amount of money in Casey’s history during these two elections.”

Cr Tim Jackson said council had “done very well” ensuring waste collection costs were kept to a minimum.

“Council cannot charge any more than it costs us to deliver that service,” he said.

School holiday fun The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation has a raft of activities on offer these school holidays.

In Hampton Park kids have the opportunity to meet members of the Hampton Park Fire Brigade when volunteers pay a visit to the library on Monday 2 July at 10.30am.

At Bunjil Place kids can explore the body’s skeletal system and make their own robotic hand on Monday 2 July between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. This activity is suitable for ages seven plus.

At Pakenham Library kids can discover their inner poet on Tuesday 3 July thanks to a fun and inventive poetry writing session. Each child will take home a framed copy of their poetry art to display. The session runs for an hour from 11am.

Safe holiday road travels The Transport Accident Commission is reminding drivers to look out for themselves and others on the roads during the winter school holidays.

As families hit the roads to entertain kids before cabin fever sets in, there are a few simple things drivers can do to ensure a safe journey.

TAC Road Safety director Samantha Cockfield said everyone had a role to play to make sure every journey on Victoria’s road was safe.

Ms Cockfield reminded motorists to be alert when driving, with wintry conditions increasing dangers on the road.

“Safe journeys, even shorter ones, start with planning,” Ms Cockfield said.

“Ensuring your vehicle’s safety is crucial during winter months. Check that your tyres and brakes are in good condition and all your lights are working.

“Black ice, fog, mist, rain, wind and land slips are all potential hazards when driving during winter months.

“People should slow down and drive to the conditions, allowing a safe distance between you and the car in front,” she said.

Ms Cockfield said it was important that people heading off for a longer trip during the holidays ensured they were prepared.

“Fatigue and speed are common factors to crashes on the roads during school holiday periods.

“Starting well rested and planning your route so that you can take your time and drive to the conditions becomes even more important when road conditions are poor.

“Turn your headlights on, even during the day, and allow plenty of travel time.”

THE State Opposition’s announcement that it will re-introduce residential planning controls that restrict low density, low impact redevelopment if elected in November, would be a backwards step for housing in Victoria, according to HIA’s Victorian executive director Fiona Nield.

The Opposition has announced if elected in November, it will within 100 days re-introduce the two dwelling per-lot limit in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone, as well as re-introducing the discretionary nine metre height limit in the General Residential Zone.

The height limit is currently 11 metres with a three storey cap. “It is important that planning policy, particularly as it relates to the residential development industry, is always looking forward seeking innovative ways to house a growing population with the ability to provider a diverse range of housing stock,�

Ms Nield said. “This announcement is likely to create

further uncertainty for both industry and the community in the coming months and may ultimately inhibit the building of homes for many first home buyers and those seeking to downsize and stay within their own community - particularly on their own block of land. “We need certainty regarding planning controls year on year to be able to continue providing Victoria’s much needed new housing stock and meet the challenges that come with such strong population growth in this state. “Announcements such as these create doubt for home owners and for many small developments in the planning stages of the process. “Amending these planning controls again will remove the opportunity for adequate consideration to be given on the merit of a site’s design opportunities and may present as an opportunity lost for many low density low impact homes being built in across the state.� �

Won three VACC awards The team at Berwick Auto Electrics and Mechanical are the proud recipients of three prestigious Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) industry awards.

Business owner Paul Beck picked up awards in categories including Best Mechanical (Light Vehicle - Metro - Small Business) and Best Auto Electrical (Small Business), while his wife Anne collected an award for Best Unsung Hero.

Hosted at Crown’s Palladium on Saturday 23 June, the awards in 35 categories were contested by elite businesses across Victoria.

A record number of applications were received for this year’s awards. All applicants were assessed by a panel of judges, whose decisions were audited by an independent standards representative. Customer service, training, occupational health and safety, environmental compliance and more were assessed.

“I’m really humbled and ecstatic,” Paul said.

“Especially as it was against such esteemed opposition. And to win an industry award that’s run by the industry for the industry and to be recognised by your peers is really great.

“I’m in shock, but it’s great to be recognised for all the hard work and the blood sweat and tears that we’ve put into the business ... so I’m very, very happy and elated.

“I had a meeting with my staff (afterwards) and said, ‘look I’m only a small (part of this) and it’s a team effort,’ so It’s their award too.”

Paul was also delighted to see his wife Anne take home an award for a new category to the VACC awards; Best Unsung Hero.

“I nominated Anne for Best Unsung Hero she didn’t know I entered her,” Paul admitted.

“I had to write the CV for her - a lot of that was to do with community, which Anne is big on, and how she has brought up a family and juggled a small business. We have a child with special needs and she’s 15 now, but earlier on she was very sick. But Anne stuck to her guns and kept paying the bills and kept the administration going. I was just stoked for her to get some recognition.”

NAIDOC Week at Royal Botanic Gardens: NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) is the biggest day of the year at Cranbourne Gardens, with some 2000 visitors attending in 2017 and even more expected this year.

There will be a range of activities to participate in; yarning, wattle seed grinding, native plant and painting activities, bushfood and medicinal plant education walks, displays and tastings, weaving, painting, an Indigenous Hip Hop Project dancer’s workshop and a free barbeque will also be available. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds.

Honouring a good Scout

By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren South mother and her teenage son have taken on the challenge of a lifetime, trekking to the foothills of the world's tallest mountain.

From facing freezing temperatures to altitude sickness, and a gruelling 156km trek through the Himalayas to the base camp of Mt Everest, Jenni Walden says "Nothing could compare to what this trip showed me, as a mother, as a leader, as a member of the community."

For Jenni and her son Mitchell, 17, their 15-day trek in March was more than just than just an adventure. It was to honour a scouting brother.

At only 17 years of age, the death of Nick Sangston in 2016 left a "massive hole" at the First Cranbourne Scout Group where Jenni was also a group leader.

Nick and Mitchell were close scouting

friends and just two days prior to Nick's death by suicide the pair had made a pact that they would climb Mt Everest together one day.

"As time passed, Mitchell was determined to bring this dream to reality," says Jenni.

"At the request of the family we took Nick's replica Australian Scout Medallion to our highest point - Mt Everest Base camp, 5836 meters above sea level. The next day we made it down to the memorial park to lay the medallion."

With the support of their fellow trekkers gathering behind them, Jenni said: "Our thoughts were silent as we reflected on a life lost to us too soon."

Their group of 12 trekkers consisted of five Australians and seven Americans. They also had a guide and an assistant guide.

As they climbed higher, the effects of altitude became more apparent. "The lack of oxygen meant that walking became so much harder and it took longer to get to places as

you were constantly stopping to catch your breath."

Jenni and Mitchell found their dietary choices were limited to just vegan foods and their accommodation was were so basic, the walls were paper thin, says Jenni.

Climbing to the foothills of Everest has been Jenni's biggest challenge yet. Every step was in slow motion, she says with "one foot in front of the other" in the face of windy and dusty conditions.

"We discovered so much about ourselves, about others and also about how those in a third world country live/survive."

"I think when you have had time to reflect and had a dozen hot showers, you realise just how amazing it all was and to honour a fellow scout in the way we did gave the trip a real sense of purpose," Jenni says.

Mitchell enjoys the views while trekking to base camp of Mt Everest.

Awards up for grabs as Westfield looks for local heroes Five everyday heroes have been nominated by the City of Casey community for a new community recognition and grants program.

Westfield Fountain Gate will award $10,000 grants apiece to three winners from each organisation on August 13.

The Westfield Local Heroes initiative seeks to discover and celebrate local people and organisations whose work benefits the local area.

Westfield Fountain Gate Centre Manager Cathy Main said, "We have been overwhelmed by the incredible nominations received from the City of Casey community, and the heartwarming stories shared."

The finalists include Sikh Volunteers Aus-

tralia volunteer Sukhwinder Kaur, Tori Norris from YMCA (The Young Men's Christian Association), Manager of Cranbourne Information and Support Service Leanne Petrides, social worker Sylvia Ryan from Berwick Secondary College for her invaluable work for the school's Student Support Team, and Community Engagement Leader Kathryn Sharp from Tulliallan Primary School for her tireless work for improving the academic and social achievements of the students.

If Ms Kaur is announced as a Westfield Local Hero, the grant would be used to increase resources and attract more volunteers to Sikh Volunteers Australia.

MS Norris said the grant would fund the YMCA's Open Doors initiative, to assist those people who cannot afford YMCA services, to gain access. It would put approximately twenty people, adults and children, through health and wellbeing and/or swimming programs.

A CISS Flexible Support Options Program would be formed if Ms Petrides took out the award which would provide emergency relief support in a variety of flexible ways.

Mental Health First Aid training would be funded for all teaching staff and student leaders, over a two-year period at Berwick Secondary College if Ms Ryan was awarded the grant.

Ms Sharp said if she was announced as a

local hero, the grant would go towards supporting AEL families, providing parenting programs, develop more information sessions, conduct family day initiatives and more.

Westfield is now calling on the public once more to help determine the three Westfield Local Heroes by casting their vote on the Westfield Fountain Gate website.

"Ten-thousand dollars can make a big difference to the social wellbeing and harmony of our community, so we urge people to vote for the change and good-will they wish to see," said Ms Martin.

Roos lock away their man

By Nick Creely Officer has taken another step in shoring up its future with highly regarded senior coach Doug Koop putting pen to paper on a new deal to stay at Starling Road until the end of the 2021 season.

The club - which initially signed Koop to a two-year deal with a trigger clause of extending to a third season - has now opted to lock away their man and assistant coach King for a further two seasons on top, extending their time at the club until the end of 2021.

Koop is well known for playing 44 VFL/ AFL games with South Melbourne, North Melbourne and Melbourne, as well as a stint with Woodville in the SANFL. He also has a rich coaching history in the league, guiding Cranbourne to a famous 2011 premiership, before a stint with Dromana in the MPNFL in 2014/15. After a year away from coaching, Koop joined the Kangaroos at the beginning of the 2017 season with his loyal assistant Billy King, instantly improving the club's standards both on and off-field.

In Koop's first season at the helm, the Kangaroos finished seventh on the SEFNL table, finishing just two games out of the finals.

Kangaroos president Nick McLennan told the News that the signing of Koop and King only adds to a stable future for the club moving forward.

"One thing that our club has been screaming out for is stability," he said.

"Over the last few years the committee has worked hard to establish a solid foundation off-field; however player retention and recruitment has been a long standing issue for our club, as well as many other clubs in SEFNL due to the uncertainty about the future of football in the region.

"For us this was compounded by the uncertainty of our coaching team following the 2016 season."

McLennan explained that extending the contracts of their coaching team for a further three years will eventually yield positive onfield results as they continue to build an exciting young side, with the Kangaroos currently sitting in fifth spot with four wins and four losses, leaving them better placed than previous years for a long-awaited finals appearance.

"The club and committee have great faith in Doug and William as a coaching team which is reflected in this decision," he said.

"When seeking to appoint a coach in the lead up to the 2017 season, the club was well aware of their coaching credentials, but having witnessed them first hand over the past 18 months we are very comfortable in extending their time at Starling Rd. "This decision is also one which has been made out of respect to our players and supporters.

"Now that we have an understanding as to where our football is to be played in 2019 and beyond it was only fair that some certainty regarding the clubs internal structures was put in place.

"It is an extremely exciting time to be part of the part of the OSFC and this decision now enables us to turn our attention to the retention of our playing group as we continue to build and improve performances on field."

Koop said that he is looking forward to continuing to develop his young list for a further three years, and hopes the club can taste the "ultimate success" in the next few years as they forge a new path.

"We are excited that our future pathway lies with the Yarra Ranges Football League," he said.

"We believe we are developing a strong mindset and game plan to become a very competitive team that will pursue the ultimate success in a more even competition based on where our club is at this present time.

Casey hits Coburg for six to continue its impressive run

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons continued their impressive run of form with a resounding win over the winless Coburg Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.

In less than perfect conditions, the Demons were a class above their opponents, completely dominating the contest after quarter-time.

Sam Weideman kicked the opening goal of the game and it was an ominous sign of things to come. Billy Stretch and Jay Kennedy-Harris were busy in the opening term, but the Lions were well and truly in the contest as the Demons owned a 17-point lead at the first break.

Coburg was unable to stay with Casey for much longer though.

Oskar Baker put through a major just one minute into the second term and from there, it was all Casey.

The Demons outscored the Lions five goals to one in the term, including back-to-back majors to Weideman, as the Demons took total control with their cleaner ball use.

Stretch was enjoying a day out; his two goals and 18 disposals in the first-half ripped Coburg to shreds.

A 43-point half-time lead was quickly added to when Weideman slotted his fourth major of the day just minutes into the third quarter. His work wasn't complete though. Two more goals in the quarter gave him six majors to threequarter time and Casey held a 61-point lead.

The wet and slippery conditions continued, but the Demons took it in their stride as the likes of Dion Johnstone and Tom Bugg got heavily involved in the contest.

Weideman's dominance continued in the final term as he kicked his seventh major early in the quarter and when captain Jack Hutchins, who excelled in a different role up forward, kicked his third goal of the day, the Demons were 68 points in front.

Casey eventually ran out 16.12 (108) to 4.7 (31) winners to claim a sixth win on the trot in impressive fashion.

Sam Weideman (seven goals) was the star of the day in trying conditions for a tall forward.

His strong hands and smarts around goal gave the Coburg defence plenty of headaches.

‘The Long Walk’ returns

By Nick Creely Saturday night will be special event for all involved with both Doveton and Narre Warren, with 'The Long Walk' set to once again grace AJ Robinson Reserve in celebration of Indigenous culture.

The Indigenous game is back again for the second consecutive year, and despite the fortunes of both clubs on-field, it's set to be an exciting spectacle.

There will be a range of family and cultural activities from 12pm onwards, with the Indigenous round game between the two clubs to kick-off at 6pm under lights.

It's been almost 14 years since Essendon legend Michael Long embarked on a historic trek, walking from his home in Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra to put Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues back on the national agenda.

It has since become a mission of hope for many Australians from all walks of life, and has most notably been one of the headline events prior to the annual Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond.

Nova Peris Kneebone - a former Indigenous athlete - will be in attendance, and a former Essendon player is also a chance of making an appearance.

As for the senior game itself, both sides currently sit on opposite ends of the SEFNL table, with Narre Warren sitting on top with just the one loss next to their name, while Doveton are winless and currently sitting last.

The two sides met back in Round 5, with the Magpies - having 12 individual goalkickers - winning by 106-points at Kalora Park.

Only metres away, the netballers will battle it out from 6.15pm, both in need of a win to keep their top-three hopes alive.

Ed Cahill and Lachlan McDonnell provided plenty of attacking forays and in testing conditions were sublime with ball in hand.

The Rays boast a 9-1 record and sit two games clear on top of the ladder as they ride this five-game winning streak.

The Dandenong Stingrays continue to go from strength to strength, claiming their fifth win in a row after taking care of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels at Shepley Oval on Saturday.

The Rays, who were again without a host of stars due to Vic Country commitments, came out on a mission in the first quarter and by half-time, the game was all but over.

A 29-point quarter-time lead was the result of hard work and a real thirst for the contest.

Debutant Josh Jackson scored the first goal of the game with his first kick in TAC Cup football and the goals flowed from there.

Bailey Schmidt booted two first quarter goals and it was a sign of things to come as the big man went on to dominate proceedings.

By the 10-minute mark of the second quarter, Schmidt and Stephen Cumming had three goals each and were proving too big and too skilled for their Rebel opponents.

The pair booted one more each late in the term to stretch Dandenong's lead out to 59 points at the main break.

With the forwards feasting, Ed Cahill, Lachlan McDonnell and captain Campbell Hustwaite were doing a mountain of work in the middle.

After half-time, the Rebels lifted their intensity around the ball and Dandenong struggled to convert in front of goal, only managing 3.9 (27) for the second half.

The damage was well and truly done though as the Rays ran out 15.16 (106) to 7.5 (47) winners.

Bailey Schmidt's game was all class as he dominated in the ruck and when he went forward. His fine set shot goal kicking was on display as he made the most of his opportunities, finishing with four majors.

Stephen Cumming (four goals) was also impressive, sharing ruck duties with Schmidt. He took plenty of strong marks in the wet and slippery conditions and showed his composure in front of goal.

It was an impressive debut for Josh Jackson, who booted three goals and looked dangerous every time he went near the ball.

Eagles end Narre’s streak

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 9 "It was a really tough game, in really tough conditions, and it was two good sides simply not giving an inch."

Cranbourne coach Stephen O'Brien couldn't have summed up his side's blockbuster clash against Narre Warren at Kalora Park any better.

In the end, it was a tale of the Magpies' wasted opportunities that resulted in their first defeat of 2018 and a clean Eagles side that were extremely efficient in their front half, 7.10 (52) to 5.13 (43).

The Eagles' pace worried Matt Shinners and the Magpies early, and with the likes of Brandon Wapshott, Shaun Marusic and Jordan Bertrand razor sharp with their kicking, the visitors surged out to an eight-point quarter time lead after looking ominous on the outside.

In a match-up that was entertaining, fierce but fair, Jesse Davies was given the task of quelling Marc Holt, and did his best to restrict him to just one goal in the opening term.

Despite drawing even in the midfield battle, the Magpies uncharacteristically turned the ball over inside 50, but the importance of Michael Collins, Mitch Cox and Dylan Quirk kept the home side within striking distance.

The Magpies certainly had their chances to strike in the second term, but butchered several straight forward chances in front of goal, before Collins produced a moment of magic, snapping a goal from virtually over his head out of nothing to give the home side the lead.

But on the other end, Holt was causing serious headaches, booting the final two goals of the half - one from a snap from a tight angle - to recapture the lead and give the shivering Eagles fans plenty of voice as the rain set in.

Needing an answer to what loomed as a potential onslaught, Collins once again showcased his immense skill, caressing the ball from the arc of 50 with a wet ball straight through the goals.

Marc Holt came off after a heavy bump moments later that eventually saw him sit the rest of the third term on the pine, and it seemed momentum was swinging the way of the home side, with Collins putting his body on the line to tap the ball into the hungry arms of Nick Scanlon, who goaled on the three quarter time siren.

They threw everything they had at the Eagles to keep their unbeaten run alive, but Holt stood tall once again to boot a goal that put the margin beyond reach, while a brilliant defensive effort, led superbly by Dillan Bass and Glenn Osborne, managed to hold the dangerous Magpies at bay in a tremendous display.

"The way we held up in the last quarter was outstanding - we've had a pretty new leadership group this year, and to see these guys take the ownership and drive the standards on the ground, it was pivotal to the result," O'Brien said of his leaders.

Marc Holt was pumped after kicking one of his four goals on Saturday. 182157 manding display that sees him just nine goals away from the 1000-goal mark.

"It was a great contest, he's a proud man Holty, and he was disappointed in last week, and he was crucial to us," he said.

Conversion became the key component that decided the eventual nine-point margin, something not lost on O'Brien.

"It sorts of swings in roundabouts - early this year, when we played them, we weren't able to capitalise the way we liked, and on Saturday, Narre were unable to, in those sorts of conditions it becomes pretty crucial," he said.

But the midfield battle - led by debutant Jake Stephens - eventually swung the Eagles way after wearing the Magpies down through run and carry by the likes of Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo, who picked up a stack of the footy.

"We rate ourselves pretty highly in the stoppage area, and it was a bit of a head to head battle in there, and it was pretty even," O'Brien said.

"At times we were able to move the ball pretty well, and even in those conditions, it wasn't all just about getting the ball forward as quickly as possible, we needed a bit of composure, and it gave our forwards a pretty good look.

"It was his (Stephens') first senior game of footy, and that's eight debutants now for the year - Jakey was nervous coming into the game, but we told him to go out and just compete.

"That's what he did, and I thought he

played a crucial role for us in the end."

Down at Holm Park, Berwick routinely knocked off Beaconsfield in the 'Battle of the Creek' clash at Holm Park on Saturday, 5.12 (42) to 2.7 (19).

As was the case in all games across the weekend, rain and heavy wins certainly had its say, but the Wickers put the screws on defensively after half time to restrict the Eagles to just two-points while kicking three themselves to walk away 23-point winners.

The great rivals certainly threw everything they had at each other, but the class and experience of the Wickers came to the fore at the crunch times in the second half.

"We certainly started well, and we adjusted well to the conditions early, but we were worked over a bit in the second and went into half-time level pegging which was a bit disappointing and we undid some hard work," Kemperman said of the first half.

It was a brilliant defensive display led by the impassable Jo West, who rallied his side to shut down Leigh McQuillan's attacking forwards such as Taylor Joyce and Nathan Langley, while the injury to champion big man Scott Meyer certainly didn't do the home side any favours.

"We stepped it up a little bit from there (the first half) - we certainly lifted our intensity around the contest, and we simplified a few things, and we set up a little bit better around stoppages," Kemperman said.

"That all meant we could have a better impact on the scoreboard, and our defence was strong across the ground."

Picture: ROB CAREW As for the Wickers' form, Kemperman is confident that a win over their rivals can start to find the run that made them the most dominant side in recent memory last year.

"We're getting there, we're starting to get some players back from injury which helps, so we're starting to find the right balance for us, so we're slowly building," he said.

"We haven't got one of those scalps yet, so we're hunting that this week."

Pakenham, meanwhile, did just enough to overcome a spirited Doveton outfit at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday, 11.11 (77) to 8.10 (58).

In a game that actually had more importance than it probably would have before the start of the season, the Lions now draw within six-points of Officer in fifth as a result of the win over the Doves.

The Doves battled manfully to give themselves a sniff by slamming on four goals to two in the third term, but Ash Green's side played the percentages in the final term to shut the game away with some dour defensive efforts, running out 19-point winners.

On a promising day for both sides, Steven O'Bryan was in vintage touch for the Lions, while the form of James Harrison (three goals), Adam Alberni (two goals) and Jafar Ocaa is a major tick for a side keeping pressure on the finals race.

By Hayley Wildes EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 10 Rowville claimed a crucial win over Blackburn at Morton Park. With both teams fighting it out for the final top four spot on the ladder, Rowville got off to a hot start and held off the home side, 10.8 (68) to 7.8 (50), despite not kicking a goal in the final term.

Noble Park was overrun by the Roos at East Ringwood, falling 14.10 (94) to 9.9 (63). The Bulls had Hudson Thomas (five goals) stand up in the forward line, while Kyle Martin's impressive run of form continued.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 11 Chelsea flexed its muscles and overcame a spirited Devon Meadows by 27 points at Glover Reserve on Saturday, 13.11 (89) to 9.8 (62).

The Panthers made the most of their chances in the opening term to lead by two points, but the Seagulls brought the heat to kick three unanswered goals in the second.

After half time, the visitors did what they needed to do, kicking eight goals to six to run away with a comfortable win.

Troy Aust was the star for the Panthers, while Allan Murray also snared two goals and Cal O'Hare was once again prominent.

Down at RJ Rowley Reserve, Rye was far too strong for Pearcedale, 14.16 (100) to 7.7 (49).

The Panthers stuck with the Dees for a half, but the home side powered away with a dominant second half.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 10 Keysborough returned to the winners list with a massive 20.14 (134) to 8.8 (56) away win over Mount Waverley.

Chris Bryan (eight goals) and Matthew Carnelley (five goals) starred for the Burras in an offensive masterclass.

The Doveton Eagles obliterated Clayton, 25.11 (161) to 6.5 (41), as Darren Sheen ran riot with seven goals. A ruthless 15-goal to one second half provided the Eagles with a massive percentage boost to claim top spot on the ladder.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 9 Springvale Districts claimed a hard-fought win over Endeavour Hills, 6.8 (44) to 3.8 (26).

Jack Allender and Steven Comino were sublime for Springvale Districts, while Ben Holland and Ben Swift battled hard for the Falcons.

Lady Cavs suffer first loss

By Hayley Wildes It was an action packed weekend of Big V basketball for the Casey Cavaliers, with mixed results across the board.

The State Championship Men went 1-1, claiming a strong home win over McKinnon on Saturday, before falling to Eltham on the road on Sunday.

In a tremendous team effort against McKinnon, the Cavs answered every challenge on their way to a 103-96 win. Casey had six players score in double figures, led by Matt Donlan (27 points) and Raheem Lemons (15 points, 13 rebounds).

On Sunday, Casey almost completed a furious comeback against Eltham. Trailing by 16 points after three quarters, the Cavs almost pulled off the impossible, but fell agonisingly short, 93-90. Raheem Lemons (16 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists) and Ben Louis (18 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) were sublime.

The Cavs sit seventh on the ladder with a 9-7 record.

The Division 1 Women's team had a disappointing weekend, dropping two games after heading into the round riding a seven-game winning streak.

A 65-81 loss to Warrnambool on Saturday night was compounded by a 56-40 loss to Western Port on Sunday.

Casey put up a fight against Warrandyte, but fell 90-82. Brendon Head (28 points, 10 rebounds) was incredible for the Cavs, but it wasn't quite enough.

Taking on the bottom-placed Coburg Giants, Casey snapped its seven-game losing streak with an 88-82 victory at home.

Jordan Gooiker (21 points) top-scored for the Cavs, while three others scored 16 points or more in a terrific team effort. The Cavs sit 10th on the ladder, with a 6-11 record.

All good things must come to an end. That was the case for the Youth League 2 Women 'Lady Cavs' as they were handed their first loss of the season by Southern Peninsula, 69-52.

The Cavs' offence stalled for the first time this season, but Lauren Tuplin (20 points, 7 rebounds) battled hard. Despite the loss, Casey is two wins clear on top with a 12-1 record.

The State Championship Men play at Casey Stadium on Saturday night from 8pm against competition leaders Ringwood.

In the game of the round, the Youth League 2 Women face Pakenham at Cardinia Life in a Saturday night top of the table clash from 5pm.

The Division 1 Women and Youth League 1 Men both hit the road on Sunday, taking on Geelong and Waverley, respectively.
