A Lara group’s sleeping mats woven from plastic bags are helping keeping the homeless warm this winter .

“It makes me feel good,” said Bags to Mats weaver Cynthia Roseburgh.

Cynthia’s group has made dozens of the mats with a loom from Lara and District Men’s Shed.

“They’re quite comfortable and they’re thick enough to put them on really cold concrete, and if it gets wet you can just shake it out,” Cynthia said.

“Obviously, after a while they start to fray and break down but at least before they get to landfill we can get some use out of them.”

Lara Lions Club supports the project and has collected hygiene products and food for the homeless for the past two years.

Cynthia was unconcerned about Woolworth’s and Coles’ plastic-bag bans affecting the mats initative.

“There’ll still be a lot of bags around,” she said.

“In the end, if there are no bags we’ll find some other project.”

Supercross over stadium use

Indy holiday just latest prize Highton’s Nick Sady has won a Gold Coast holiday courtesy of the Geelong Indy.

Nick’s name was drawn last week from hundreds of entries in the competition, conducted at geelongindy.com.au.

Indy sales manager Tim Debenham presented Nick with his prize this week.

He won four nights’ accommodation for two from Queensland Gold Coast Holidays and a $500 voucher toward his flights, courtesy of Newcomb’s Sirocco Travel.

The Gold Coast holiday draw was the latest in a series of competitions, available on the Indy website and promoted through the paper and its Facebook page.

Three men are on the run after a series of ram raids at Newcomb and Drysdale, according to police.

Investigators released security camera images of the raids, one depicting the tail of their vehicle ploughing through a roller door.

Police identified the vehicle as a silver Ford Territory but failed to say whether investigators believed that it was stolen.

Police said the culprits struck in the early hours of Wednesday morning, before sunrise.

The three men first used a sledgehammer to smash the windows of a service station on the Bellarine Hwy, Newcomb, soon after 3.45am.

Police alleged that the trio stole cigarettes from the servo.

Investigators “believed” that the same men then tried to force entry to a put at Drysdale.

The rammed a roller door on the Collins St venue about 4.15am “but were unsuccessful”, police said.

“These men have then driven to a commercial premises on Murradoc Rd, Drysdale, about 4.20am, where they have rammed a roller door and stolen various power tools.

“The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” investigators posted on social media under the security images.

‘Women’s rehab’ to open at Mt Duneed

By Luke Voogt Drug rehab group Foundation 61 has secured land for a “vital” women’s clinic at Mount Duneed after a two-year search.

“It’s going to be no trouble filling it up,” said founder Rob Lytzki. “(This clinic) could be the difference between (addicts) getting control of their life again or staying in a life of addiction and poverty.”

Mr Lytzki hoped to have the eight-bed clinic running by June 2019 after the foundation purchased a 0.8 hectare property three weeks ago.

The property was a “healthy distance” away from the foundation’s male facility in Mount Duneed, because female addicts had often suffered family violence, Mr Lytzki said.

“They need to be in a facility where they feel safe - particularly the women.

“Although... sometimes you have guys who have suffered abuse at the hands of women too.”

The facility would also feature children’s bedrooms for two women, Mr Lytzki said.

“Often a mum can’t seek help because she’s got nowhere to place her children.”

Foundation 61 began the search for a property after receiving $1.5 million in the 2016-17 Federal Budget.

“It’s been very difficult to find a property that’s tailor-made for our purposes,” Mr Lytzki said.

The foundation took a year to “seal the deal” with the owner, he added.

Foundation 61 has submitted detailed plans to Geelong’s council for approval.

“We’re well down the road on all that sort of stuff,” Mr Lytzki said.

He expected council to approve the plans in four to six months but hoped it could fasttrack them.

“Then we’ll commence the project which is an eight-month build,” he said.

“I’m very excited but it’s frustrating to wait for all the process to go through so we can provide the service.”

Foundation 61 is Christian-based rehab group that charges patients 75 per cent of their welfare benefits.

Patients attend church services as part of the program but are not obligated to adopt Christianity.

Cox withdrawn The federal electorate of Corangamite will retain its name after authorities shelved controversial plans to rename it Cox as part of a boundaries realignment.

Approved changes would add the Bellarine Peninsula to Corangamite but remove Belmont and Highton in an exchange of the areas with neighbouring Corio, the Australian Electoral Commission confirmed this week.

Fountains ‘discovered’ City Hall has “come across” a further 13 public drinking fountains with lead contamination higher than national guidelines.

City Hall said it closed 13 of the fountains after discovering 21 that were overlooked on an initial list of 80 closed earlier this month.

Refinery floats Investors will be able to buy 60 per cent of the company operating Geelong’s oil refinery after Dutch parent Vitol confirmed a stock market float of Viva Energy.

Vitol, which established Viva Energy after buying Shell’s Australian downstream assets in 2014, expected the public float would value the company in the vicinity of $5 billion.

Hague sentenced Killer Karl Michael Hague has been sentenced to 26 years’ jail for the stabbing murder of 16-year-old Ricky Balcombe in Geelong’s Market Square 13 years ago. The 44-year-old would spend at least 20 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole after already serving 671 days behind bars ahead of sentencing, Justice Lex Lasry ruled last Friday.

Koreans coming A Korean team will base itself in Geelong this summer to play in Australian Baseball League, Victorian Sport Minister John Eren has announced. About 45 South Koreans would stay in Geelong for the season as 40 of their matches were broadcast to audiences of up to one million fans including followers in Korea, Mr Eren said.

Public planning City Hall has invited the public to help draw up plans for the final residential precinct in Geelong’s Armstrong Creek growth area.

State and federal governments and other organisations have invested $177 million in redeveloping the stadium’s stands since 2003.

Estimates for the final stage of the stadium’s redevelopment range from $90 million to $100 million, bringing the total investment to more than a quarter of a billion dollars.

The Victorian Government established the trust in 2016 to administer the stadium.

“The stadium is amazing but hugely underutilized and that was the trust’s job,” Mr Lyons said.

But trust chief executive officer Michael Brown refused to engage with Mr Lyons, in-

stead focussing on the return of the Australian Supercross Championship to the stadium.

“The trust respects the rights of social media users, but does not feel it necessary to respond to commentary such as this,” he said.

Mr Brown joined an announcement on Wednesday as Australian Supercross competitors rode across the ground performing wheelies for the cameras.

“We are thrilled to have Supercross back at GMHBA Stadium,” he said.

“Fans will enjoy an action-packed night of entertainment in front of the newly-redeveloped Brownlow Stand.”

The national series comes to the stadium when it hosts the Victorian leg on 13 October.

“Wednesday’s Supercross announcement was the beginning of an exciting calendar of events to be held at GMHBA Stadium during

the AFL off-season,” Mr Brown said yesterday.

But he declined to say what these events would be.

“This is Australia’s best regional Stadium and the beating heart of the Geelong sporting community,” he said.

“We are excited for yet another opportunity to showcase the Stadium’s multipurpose capabilities on a national stage.”

Troy Bayliss Events will put on the night featuring an Australian-first triple-crown competition format.

The company’s namesake and three-time World Superbike Champion was at Kardinia Park on Wednesday for the announcement.

City ‘misled’ on drug plan

By Luke Voogt A Liberal MP misled Geelong when she announced a new team to fight drug use in the city, according to a federal Labor counterpart.

Corio MP Richard Marles slammed Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson for claiming earlier this month that "another local drug action team (was) being established in Geelong”.

But the Alcohol and Drug Foundation revealed to the Indy this week that the team would work from Footscray, predominantly covering the Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Wyndham regions.

“Rebranding established teams from other parts of the country and saying they're ‘another local drug action team being established in Geelong’ is misleading,” Mr Marles said.

The Labor MP called for the Federal Government to instead introduce a drug action team dedicated to Geelong’s northern suburbs.

“It would be great to see a team solely dedicated to those most in need across Geelong,” he said.

“The government absolutely needs to be doing more on this. I’ve encouraged local organisations in Geelong to apply for government funding to help deal with drugs in our city.

“We need to see positive outcomes when it comes to tackling drugs in our city, we can do more.”

The new team will cover an area with a total population greater than Geelong, stretching

from Melbourne’s west to Corio at its southernmost point.

Ms Henderson congratulated the South Sudanese Community Association in Victoria on receiving $10,000 in Federal Government funding to help develop a local community action plan.

“I’m pleased that people from Geelong are working together to tackle the devastating impact of alcohol and drugs including ice,” she said.

The drug action team could apply for additional funding to help deliver targeted, local projects after completing the plan, Ms Henderson said.

The coalition was investing $298 million over four years to combat drug and alcohol misuse across Australia under the National Ice Action Strategy, she said.

An Alcohol and Drug Foundation spokesperson this week confirmed Melbourne community services provider MiCare would lead the team from Footscray.

The team was consulting members of Victoria’s South Sudanese community, including in Geelong, as part of the planning stage.

“The (team) is aiming to work with the South Sudanese community in Geelong,” the spokesperson said.

Geelong currently has one drug action team, the Geelong Drug Action Network, which operates out Barwon, Child, Youth and Family.

The network received an additional $20,000 in Federal funding last December on top of an initial $10,000.

Hunter takes volunteers job After six years presiding over the care of terminally-ill patients Helen Hunter has joined Volunteering Geelong as its new chief executive officer.

Ms Hunter oversaw 70 volunteers providing respite and care at Anam Cara House as the organisation’s CEO. “The people of Geelong are renowned for their generous contributions to the community and commitment to giving back to others,” she said.

Ms Hunter had volunteered at several events after work and for the past four years with Geelong Central Rotary Club, she said.

“Having been a volunteer myself as well as working with other volunteers, I am keen to see Volunteering Geelong grow and become a

cornerstone organisation in the region’s notfor-profit sector.”

Volunteering Geelong president Anthony Aitken welcomed Ms Hunter to the organisation during an announcement last Thursday.

“Helen joins Volunteering Geelong at an exciting time as we work toward launching our new fundraising foundation,” he said.

“Volunteering Geelong has established a solid footing in Geelong and we look forward to Helen helping us lead the organisation and its members during the next, important steps in our development.”

‘1900 jobs’ stall in capital

By Luke Voogt Canberra has held out on relocating Comcare to Geelong despite council claims the move would create almost 1900 jobs in the city.

A Geelong delegation met ministers and policy makers in Canberra this week but returned on Wednesday without a commitment.

Neither the government nor opposition committed to a deadline for deciding on the relocation, said delegation leader and acting mayor Peter Murrihy.

“They were pretty coy about that,” Cr Murrihy.

“I got the impression (an announcement) wasn’t imminent but it was at the forefront of

their discussions. We certainly hope it’s in the very near future.“ Cr Murrihy was “hopeful” after speaking with Regional Development Minister John McVeigh's senior advisor and Labor shadow minister Joel Fitzgibbon.

“We were very happy with the way the delegation went and how it got across.”

The delegation argued Comcare would complement Geelong’s NDIA, TAC and Worksafe headquarters.

“The four together would make a one-ofa-kind social insurance hub in Australia,” Cr Murrihy said.

“Our case was that Geelong was a lifestyle

choice and a great place to live and work.”

The delegation visited Canberra after City Hall released research saying the relocation would inject $550 million into Geelong’s economy and indirectly create 1871 jobs, including 600 directly with Comcare and 86 during construction.

The research contradicted Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) predictions the relocation would create far fewer Geelong jobs.

“We wouldn’t expect the whole workforce to move to Geelong,” Cr Murrihy admitted.

“But I think our expectations are realistic.

The resistance from the union is expected as it would be from various organisations.”

The research, by Bendigo-based planning consultant Remplan, predicted that moving both Comcare’s Melbourne and Canberra offices to Geelong would create 600 local jobs.

In May last year CPSU national secretary Nadine Flood disputed claims the relocation would bring 600 jobs to Geelong.

“Comcare staff are spread throughout Australia, as they need to be to carry out their work,” she told the Indy.

“Relocating Comcare’s central office to Geelong wouldn’t bring anywhere near the hundreds of jobs that some people are speculating about.”

The most recent delegation did not meet with the union or Comcare, Cr Murrihy said.

Repairs after wild weather Foreshore rangers repaired damage along the Surf Coast this week after storms wreaked havoc on Sunday.

The wild weather impacted from Torquay to Lorne, according to Great Ocean Road Coast Committee reserve manager Caleb Hurrell.

“We’ve seen trees down, sand lost from some beaches and widespread coastal erosion, which are common in winter,” he said.

“Most of the sand lost during winter storms returns with the calmer weather building beaches back up again during summer.”

The storms severely damaged beach stairs at Spout Creek, near Aireys Inlet, and at Anglesea's Point Roadknight, forcing the committee to close them, Mr Hurrell said.

“Both will need to be replaced.”

Coastal workers erected warning signage at Soapy Rocks, Anglesea, following a cliff fall, Mr Hurrell said.

“The area will continue to be monitored.”

Mr Hurrell thanked the public for helping the committee identify areas in need of attention along the coastline.

Foreshore rangers opened the Torquay's usually-landlocked Spring Creek on Monday following difficult conditions and rising waters last week, he said.

Former teacher schools women’s luncheon

By Luke Voogt More than 100 women including leaders in business and philanthropy gathered for the Geelong National Council of Women’s 74th annual luncheon on Monday.

The women listened to guest speaker Elida Brereton, perhaps best-known as principal of the fictitious Summer Heights High.

“I think it’s an outstanding tribute to their branch that they attracted so many impressive Geelong women,” she told the Indy on Wednesday.

Fans of Chris Lilley’s mockumentary might be surprised to learn Ms Brereton was real-life

principal of Camberwell High School for 15 years and taught in Geelong.

She spoke at the luncheon of hiking the Himalayas to meet a lama, traveling through Iran during the revolution in 1978 and helping capture a Mexican thief.

“I grabbed him and two security men jumped out of the shrubbery in the hotel lobby to tackle him,” she said.

After discovering his suitcase full of jewellery from other thefts Mexican police joked Ms Brereton should join them, she said.

Her “love affair” with Geelong began teaching geography at Bell Park High School throughout the ‘70s and had continued as a state execu-

tive of the women’s council, she said.

“We’re proud of the Geelong branch because it’s probably the most vibrant of the regional groups,” she said.

Ms Brereton joined Geelong branch president Janice Latham discussing family violence, legal representation for children, elderly abuse and homelessness.

Ms Latham was proud of the turnout for the luncheon.

“At least a dozen of these women were (Order of Australia members),” she said.

“They are women who have spent their life in service to the community in business and as volunteers.”

Drunk shocks A Corio woman had two children in the back seat of her car when police caught her driving at twice the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police intercepted the 34-year-old at a booze bus on Ballarat Rd, Hamlyn Heights, on Sunday night.

She returned a positive preliminary test as police discovered the two young passengers.

She later returned a blood alcohol concentration of .114 per cent at a police station.

Officers impounded her car for 30 days and suspended her licence ahead of a drink-driving charge on summons.

Dogs kill pet

PIXIE POWER: Geelong West presenter Joel Carnegie has won international awards for his documentary on fairy sightings.

A dog died and two others needed veterinary treatment after three separate attacks at Highton around 6am last Friday.

Council animal management officers seized two malamute or akita dogs that allegedly killed the dog and maimed the two others, City Hall said.

The officers transported the two dogs that launched the attack to Geelong Animal Welfare Society after capturing them with police assistance.

Paramedics checked the elderly owner of the deceased dog before clearing them to return home, City Hall said.

A council officer helped the elderly owner home and stayed with them until a family member arrived.

One of the two injured dogs was left in a "serious condition", according to council planning and development director Joanne Van Slageren.

“We’re in the early process of our investigation into the alleged attacks,” she said.

“We’re currently working with Victoria Police to obtain more information as our investigations proceed."

Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy following two separate aggravated burglaries in Corio on Wednesday morning.

An offender broke into a woman’s home on Goodwin Court shortly after 3am, according to investigators. The offender took cash and jewellery from the house but no one sustained injuries during the incident, police alleged.

Police then received a second report of an aggravated burglary on Goodall Crt. Police attended with the dog squad, locating a teenager on a bike in nearby English Crt. The boy allegedly dumped the bike and ran but police arrested him soon after.

Police discovered a bag of allegedly stolen cash and jewellery near the bike.

The boy was in custody and assisting police with their enquiries on Wednesday morning.

By Luke Voogt A woman’s alleged thefts totalling $100,000 from the Royal Geelong Show have driven local deception offences to almost double in a year.

Former show executive Jacqueline Patmore, 46, faces 708 fraud charges at a committal hearing at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police charged Ms Patmore in December 2017 after she allegedly defrauded the Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society of about $100,000 from 2012 to 2015.

Reported deception offences in Geelong rose 72 per cent from April 2017 to March 2018 up 935 from 1291 to 2226, according to Crime Statistics Agency Victoria.

But Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard confirmed most of the increase resulted from one case involving “false accounting offences within a business environment.”

Without this case deception rose by 17 per cent, with most other reported offences resulting from stolen cards, Supt Gillard said.

“A card will be stolen from a car, purse or home and be used as tap-and-go offending.”

But overall crime decreased by one per cent per 100,000 people in Geelong, with the total number of offences increasing by about one percent.

“We’re pretty happy with that,” Supt Gillard said.

“We know who our key offenders are because their names and faces keep popping up all the time,” he said.

Geelong police and support agencies had also done “great work” in youth offending, Supt Gillard said.

But assault, robbery, stalking and sexual offences all increased in Geelong.

“It’s an issue Victoria-wide. We need to be more respectful of people’s opinions, views and the way they live,” Supt Gillard said.

Assaults were up by 2 per cent but Supt Gillard said increasing prison populations nearby contributed to this.

Dangerous and negligent behaviour increased by 31 per cent, with several incidents of “people using their vehicle as a weapon”, Supt Gillard said.

Supt Gillard urged locals to lock their cars and not leave anything valuable in them, after 51 per cent of car thefts resulted from unlocked doors.

“Think of all that time we could have saved and committed to physical police presence,” he said.

Sexual offences rose by 45 per cent, the Indy reported last Friday, following the release of the latest crime statistics.

Labor MP praises tax cuts

By Luke Voogt Geelong MP and former trade unionist Christine Couzens has praised State Government business tax cuts weeks before they take effect on 1 July.

“All the changes that we have implemented are making people feel more confident in business,” Ms Couzens told parliament last month.

“For a lot of those... small and medium businesses, they will be able to employ more people.

“There will be those that cannot, and it will help them in other ways, but many of those businesses are now saying, ’Yes, we will employ more people’.”

In the 2018/2019 Victorian budget the government reduced payroll tax from 3.65 to 2.45 per cent for regional businesses.

The budget will also see the payroll tax threshold rise from $625,000 to $650,000.

CUTS PRAISE: Geelong MP Christine Couzens.

“It was an Andrews Labor Government that did that for the benefit of businesses in my community, businesses that want to grow,” Ms Couzens told parliament.

“Whether they be a cafe, a tourist operator, a bookstore or a manufacturer, the benefits are significant for them.”

Her speech comes as the Federal Parliament debates Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s plans to introduce corporate tax cuts.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief Bernadette Uzelac welcomed the State Government measures saying they would reduce barriers to employment.

“I think its general recognition by all parties that business is one of the economic drivers.“ Raising the threshold would give small businesses, which make up most of Geelong’s economy, more breathing space to employ people, she said. “(Some of our members) say they are worried about employing another person because that will put them over the threshold.

“You can’t necessarily say it’s going to cre-

ate jobs but it will remove that barrier to doing business.”

But Ms Uzelac called for State Government to raise the threshold further, saying Victoria had the second-lowest in Australia.

Queensland, the Northern Territory and ACT have thresholds of $1.1 million, $1.5 million and $2 million respectively, she added.

The chamber had no position on Federal Government’s proposed corporate cuts because they would not affect its members, Ms Uzelac said.

“Many of our members are either too small to pay that tax or are not incorporated businesses.

“However, if you do reduce some of the costs of business, theoretically that should create employment opportunities in the supply chain.”

Geelong Trades Hall secretary Colin Vernon declined to comment.

A debate arose over alterations to the boundaries of the federal electorate of Corangamite, with a new name proposed but now withdrawn.

There was considerable opposition to the suggested name, Cox, because it would have meant the loss of an Aboriginal name in our area.

Former Barrabool Shire councillor Adrian Schonfelder made an excellent suggestion by nominating that the new federal electorate be named Barrabool (Letters, 15 June).

This was an Aboriginal name that was lost in the region when amalgamation took place in the late 1990s.

As many meetings and events now begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of our land, Mr Schonfelder’s suggestion could have been a genuine reconciliatory transition that would have restored the name Barrabool while also serving as a remembrance of the Barrabool people who were once the custodians in this place.

Although labelled “total madness”, privatising the ABC would save the federal budget $1 billion annually.

Liberal Party Council delegate and Young Liberals federal vice-president Mitchell Collier has noted that the sale would also not only pay off debt but “not diminish the Australian media landscape”.

The council voted two-to-one in favour of the sale.

On that tack, and while I don’t have a financial interest in SKY, former Sacred Heart College alumni Peta Credlin’s program continues to deliver editorial and content that leaves the ABC’s The Drum,7.30 Report and Q&A in its wake.

To that end, longer game, one would hope that Ms Credlin, a Bachelor oOf Laws graduate and tough long-serving federal coalition staffer can parlay those much need qualities

Governments are merely the stewards and custodians of assets, not the owners. The people are the rightful owners because their toil and sweat pays for these things.

When does a Member of Parliament become an owner of what they steward? Where is the name on the title, and does the alleged ownership on failure to be re-elected cease?

Pull the other one, youngsters, and back in your box, which at least really is yours.

Hotel to open in the Shed Actors from Australian stage and screen come to the Potato Shed this week to recreate awardwinning play Hotel Sorrento.

The cast for the 28-year-old Australian play has a long list of acting credits on iconic TV dramas including Neighbours, House Husbands and Home and Away.

Dennis Coard, who had stints at ‘Summer Bay’ in the ’80s and more recently in Hollywood, was thrilled to bring the play to Drysdale this Friday and Saturday.

“This is such a funny yet moving show and we’re really enjoying the challenge of giving it a new energy,” he said.

Hannie Rayson wrote the 1990 play, which has won prestigious literary and theatre awards.

The play has toured internationally, in languages including Japanese, French and Swedish, and in 1995 the film version won several national awards.

Hotel Sorrento is a tale of three sisters reuniting in the normally quiet seaside town after 10 years apart.

What begins as a comedy, gives way to a familial drama of a family brought to the brink.

“While the story is set in Sorrento, it could just as easily reflect a family story from Portarlington or Barwon Heads,” Coard said.

“The secrets and the stories of the past suddenly become issues to face here and now.”

Denny Lawrence directs the play when it comes to Drysdale, in what will be HIT Productions’ 100th tour according to producer Christine Harris.

“I’m incredibly proud to be able to bring Hotel Sorrento to one of our favourite venues the Potato Shed,“ she said.

warming, funny, with a touch of dramatic mystery creating a classic Aussie story.”

Rayson looked forward to travelling down the Princes Highway too.

“I love coming to The Potato Shed. It’s a

model of community theatre,” she said.

“It’s such a great environment that is beloved by the community and the repertoire for 2018 is terrific. I wish it was my local!”

Booth, Ruth Caro, Kim Denman and Mike Smith, who have appeared in plays touring Australia and on national TV. Hotel Sorrento plays at the Potato Shed at 8pm Friday and 2pm Saturday.

CONFRONTING: Catherine McClements (centre) plays minister Clair in a Melbourne production of The Events, which comes to Geelong next month.

Choir shot in nasty Events terrible shooting in the wake of recent ideological massacres in the US. Clair discovers a boy who is a voice of the alienated, an enemy within, a lost generation, and struggles with her own urges to repay murder with murder.

McClements has played roles in scores of Australian TV series including Wentworth, The Secret Life of Us, Rake and Water Rats.

The play comes to Geelong Performing Arts Centre for five performances from 11 to 14 July for its latest tour.

Written by Scottish playwright David Greig, The Events is a co-production between Belvoir, Malthouse and State Theatre Company of South Australia.

A misguided young man opens fire on a local choir, blowing their community apart, in a confronting play coming to Geelong next month.

Prolific Australian actress Catherine McClements joins 25 singers from Geelong choir Raise the Bar in the musical play The Events.

McClements plays Clair, a lesbian Anglican minister and director of a choir that meets regularly in a local hall, made up of outsiders and the privileged alike.

But a young man enters with a semi-automatic weapon, shattering in seconds the multicultural community Clair took years to build.

In the ensuing events Clair meets the figures who influenced the young man’s life.

Fun For all the Family

The Ponds Hotel is the perfect place to stop for coffee or breakfast on your way to the coast with its new cafe.

The hotel has sold quality, affordable meals since the 1970s and has now added premium Julius Meinl coffee to the menu.

“It’s a good atmosphere, you can come in, sit and relax before shopping,” says hotel manager Margaret Spence.

The new cafe stocks all the favourites, like home-made muffins, fresh water creek sponges and fuchsias - with gluten-free options available.

Since the cafe opened a month ago it’s served breakfast every Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am.

“There were often people in the car park waiting for the hotel to open before we had the cafe,” Margaret says.

The cafe has options from a traditional English breakfast to a simple muesli to give coastal drivers energy for the day.

The hotel is already a gateway to the coast and Margaret says she gets plenty of people on a trips.

“Particularly if the weather’s nice - it’s always nice to hear what they’re up to.”

A long-time Geelong resident, Margaret has 20 years in the business and enjoys managing both The Ponds and Norlane Hotel.

“It keeps me busy,” she says.

Her friendly and competent staff make the Ponds Hotel the ideal place to stop, freshen up, stock up or just relax.

The Ponds Hotel is located 10km from Geelong CBD at 1154 Princes Highway, Waurn Ponds.

The cafe opens at 8am and closes at 3.30pm each day.

Hybrid icon turns heads

By Vani Naidoo Hyundai’s electrically influenced Ioniq range is just about ready to go on sale in Australia. There are a few of them getting around, loaned to lucky fleet users, as the Korean company get a feel for what it’s real debut may herald.

While colleagues have looked at performance, battery capacity and Hyundai’s really drive to stretch out, we were able to put this new looker to the family test.

With its sleek lines, well-appointed front end and hatchback rear the Ioniq Hybrid makes quite a pretty picture. You can save the planet and look good too. It matters not that the really worthy exterior elements are more about achieving a fuel-saving aerodynamic shape than wanting to run with the cool kids.

It is eye-catching, in a good way, and aside from the poor rear visibility, there is nothing to test the complaints department.

The interior is much more demure than I was expecting. Aside from the energy-use instrumentation that shares space with the speedometer and the Eco climate change option, there is little to separate the Ioniq, visually at least, from a petrol guzzler. That could be a good thing, I suppose, but a little bit of flash design wouldn’t hurt either.

The materials themselves are recycled or sustainably sourced and look and feel, for the most part, of approving quality.

Lodgings are comfortable, both front and back, with seating comfortable without stretching to plush. The phone charging plate at the bottom of the centre stack is a useful touch although storage could be a tad better - a solitary front cup holder and shallow door pockets feels wanting. Even the environmentally-conscious have stuff.

The sloping roof which may hinder taller passengers has no problems accommodating the kids. Two is a better number than three though as the centre seat is a touch hard. There are two IsoFix points should you have littlies.

way as their battery-operated toys - it’s a stretch, but parents embellish the truth, okay? - but did bemoan the lack of a USB point in the back.

Surprisingly, the boot is practical, offering up 456-litres with the 60:40 rear seat in position.

That will do you a fair grocery shop even with the school bags chucked in haphazardly and let’s not forget there is a full-sized spare in there too.

An 8.0-inch split colour touchscreen is as adept as giving you the energy breakdown as it is in providing reliable directions. Graphic quality is great, as is connectivity, with the up-to-date traffic information saving valuable gridlock time too.

There is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if you are unable to be parted from the comforts of your smartphone screen and a decent eightspeaker stereo to listen to those tunes.

Guthries re-sign as Cats take breather

By Justin Flynn Geelong enters this week’s bye with an 8-5 win-loss record after the news that the Guthrie brothers - Cam and Zach - have re-signed with the club for three and two years respectively.

The Indy takes a look at the Cats’ season so far.

What has worked?

The backline. Without Lachie Henderson and Harry Taylor for lengthy periods, the defence has stood up under all sorts of pressure. Tom Stewart has been a revelation in the backline.

With Henderson back in the VFL and looking like returning sooner rather than later and Taylor back in a few weeks, the Cats will have ’good’ headaches at selection.

What hasn’t worked?

The Cats are not a high-scoring team, but their defence has managed to keep opposition sides to losing scores. Losing Dan Menzel to injury hasn’t helped, although the livewire forward is expected back in the coming weeks.

Tom Hawkins’ form has been up and down, but he was the best key forward on the ground in the loss to Richmond with three goals. Injuries haven’t helped either. Menzel, Taylor,

Henderson, Aaron Black, Scott Selwood and Cam Guthrie have all missed plenty of footy this year with Black the most serious, requiring a knee reconstruction. Gary Ablett has also missed chunks of footy, but seems back to his brilliant best in recent outings.

The road ahead The Cats should beat the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium straight after their bye.

They then face three massive weeks that could define their season. Sydney at the SCG, Adelaide at Adelaide Oval and Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium present a massive challenge.

They will start favourites against Adelaide and Melbourne and if they can pinch the Swans game, it would almost certainly mean a coveted top four finish.

Geelong then has Brisbane at GMHBA Stadium in what should be a win, but then faces Richmond and Hawthorn at the MCG, before finishing with Fremantle and Gold Coast at GMHBA Stadium in what should be two wins to kick start their finals campaign.

The ‘X’ factor Geelong’s much hyped midfield hasn’t really gelled this season, but surely it’s just a matter of time. That’s not to say the midfield hasn’t

been good - far from it.

Ablett has his mojo back after three outstanding games while Joel Selwood’s performance against Richmond was simply breathtaking.

Patrick Dangerfield has had a good season without being his brilliant self, while Mitch Duncan and Tim Kelly have found plenty of the ball. If it all comes together after the bye, look out. Scott Selwood’s return will also add some hardness around the contests.

Prediction Ladder predictions are always fraught with danger, but we have the Cats finishing the home and away season in sixth place, and playing a ‘home’ final against Melbourne, but it’s tight at the top of the ladder. If that game is at GMHBA Stadium, the Cats would be almost unbackable favourites.

One extra win could see the Cats finish as high as second. Percentage is likely to play a huge factor in the final standings and Geelong’s is competitive at 126.2 per cent.

Verdict We see a preliminary final as a realistic goal.

Get to the penultimate week of the season and then anything can happen.

Warrior punishment for resurgent Ranges

By Josip Zilic For the first time this season North Geelong Warriors displayed how punishing it could be in front of goal, putting four past Box Hill during last weekend’s encounter in NPL2.

However, the Warriors also received a reminder of how vital it is to remain focussed on defensive responsibilities after letting two late goals through to set up a tense finish to the 4-3 win.

Coming to the Warriors this weekend is a resurgent Whittlesea Ranges. Having recently parted ways with enigmatic coach Gianfranco Impellezeri and installing Tony Ciantar, the Ranges have picked their form up, beating highly fancied St Albans and Melbourne City along the way.

Solidifying them are recent acquisitions including former Warrior Andrew Doig in the middle of the park, who will be sure to be up for the challenge of facing his old side. geelongindy.com.au

North Geelong’s move up to third should inspire the youthful side to see how far it can

push itself, bringing together a five-game unbeaten streak that included four matches without conceding is a sign of where the side can head.

With the recent form progressing, and the emerging development of young forward Jamie Noggler being rewarded with a cracker of a long-range goal last week, as well as Darius Madison finding the net three times in recent matches, the coaches will undoubtedly be excited about the prospects to come.

Opportunities will no doubt come because Anthony Banovac is out of selection for four weeks while overseas and Ryan Opperman is recovering from a foot injury. The absences open the door for the likes of Lewis Waight, Tom Hidic and Dom Marafioti to push for starting spots.

This weekend’s action begins 12:45pm at Elcho Park with the under-20s looking to turnaround its performances of late after cruelly going down 1-0 last week.

Anglers who braved last week’s rough weather were rewarded for their efforts.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour produced big snapper, garfish and snotty trevalla along with the pinkies, salmon and flathead that have been biting for a while now. Anglers chasing the big winter snapper had the best results, especially on unweighted or lightly weighted fresh baits.

The trevalla were present around structure like Cunningham Pier and Royal Geelong Yacht Club, while the garfish were caught off the rocks at Limeburner’s Point and St Helens boat ramps.

Bream responded well to the rain’s light flush of local estuaries. Most small creeks along the coast from Torquay to Apollo Bay fished well for anglers using unweighted scrub worms or small freshwater yabbies, although lightly weighed creature-bait soft plastics also worked.

Local surf beaches fired with some fantastic salmon fishing. Jan Juc, Bancoora, Anglesea and Moggs Creek were all hot spots whether using lures of bait.

The tuna fishing continued down the southwest where Portland, Port Fairy and Apollo Bay were hot spots for fish from 15kg to over 120kg. The latter produced numerous reports of barrels, while the former two fished best out near the shelf in 100mto 130m.

Freshwater fishing was outstanding last week, with Lake Purrumbete producing brown trout in excess of 10lb for anglers flat-line trolling Tassie Devils.

Dropping soft plastics or worms in 4m to 8m on the outside of the weed beds resulted in caputures of redfin, which were present in plague propotions.

Wurdibuloc Reservoir was fantastic again for redfin. Anglers casting soft plastics on 1/4oz jigheads caught fish, while hard-body minnow lures and bladed spinners landed some brown trout.

Lake Bolac fished well for rainbow trout of 3kg and above. Using Powerbait or pilchard fillets accounted for fish, although patience is the key for successful anglers who spent several hours without a touch before the bite began.
