Jobs on the line The jobs of school cleaners across Casey hang in the balance with new State Government reforms set to tear up their contracts next month.

The Victorian Government will introduce a new system where eight zones will be created across metropolitan Melbourne and a single cleaning contract will be awarded for all schools in each zone as of July 1.

Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said attacking small family cleaning businesses was a disgrace with the Labor Government stopping at nothing to expand their union base.

"These new reforms mean schools, like Cranbourne Park Primary School in my electorate, will be dirtier for longer," she said.

"I am an experienced school teacher and I know how difficult and demoralising it can be for staff and students to work in a dirty environment. It is not conducive to learning."

Works progress to demolish former Civic Centre and Library Demolition works for the old Civic Centre and Narre Warren Library are in full swing, with two excavators now on site.

To accommodate for this and ensure safety for all, the temporary fence line has been pushed out and approximately 70 car parks are now unavailable for the remainder of the works, expected to be completed by November 2018.

The works are being completed in two phases with phase one occurring now, the demolition of the buildings.

The second phase of the project includes bulk earthworks, the construction of an additional 79 space carpark and re-establishing the area for public use.

Crime rate is down

By Cam Lucadou-Wells On the back of extra police, Casey's official crime rate has plummeted to its lowest level since 2014.

Recorded offences dropped 21.6 per cent drop in the 12 months up to 31 March 2018, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report released on 14 June.

The reduction coincided with last year's roll-out of extra police into growth-corridors such as Casey.

It was more than double the 9.5 per cent drop in the statewide crime rate.

Among the biggest reductions were burglaries (by 26.8 per cent), thefts (33.5 per cent), drug offences (22.4 per cent), weapons (17.4 per cent) and stalking, harassing and threatening behaviour (17.5 per cent).

The high-harm crimes in assaults and robberies also dropped.

Sobering, there were still more than 2200 assaults in the year period - more than 40 a week. There were 1755 burglaries and breakins - more than 30 a week.

On the rise were sexual offences (up 11 per cent), and breaches of court orders such as bail and intervention orders (11.2 per cent).

Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp, of Victoria Police, said there were "really good results" where additional police were sent to

growth-corridors such as Melbourne's SouthEast.

He also noted the impact of new forensics technology that quickly identified high-risk offenders using DNA and fingerprints.

A significant factor in the "disappointing" rise in sexual assaults was that victims were more willing to report to police and support agencies, Dep Comm Crisp said.

New sexual offences had also allowed police to further target "evil" online predators.

"Social media and on-line platforms provide that sort of opportunity to engage in this type of behaviour but through the introduction of these new offences it enables us to intervene and act before that contact becomes physical."

Dep Comm Crisp said people were focused on reducing the 160 home invasions recorded in the 12-month period.

Across Victoria, there were 2500 less family violence offences, including serious assaults, he noted.

Police Minister Lisa Neville praised the "incredibly hard work" of police for turning around successive years of growing crime.

She and Victoria Police would continue to focus on making the community safer and reducing harm.

"We're not stopping. This is the start - we've

still got a long way to go.

"We're going to continue it going forward this quarter, the next quarter and the one after that."

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the rising crime trend since 2011 had been "turned around".

Casey has received 31 new police as part of the State Government's recruitment drive.

"More police in our community means more police patrolling the streets and more police employed in specialist roles to prevent crime and prosecute offenders - with more to come over the coming years."

Opposition police spokesman Edward O'Donohue said crime in Casey had risen by 13.5 per cent since the State Government's election in late 2014 - above the state average rise of 9.5 per cent.

"Casey Police have been under-resourced for far too long due to (Premier) Daniel Andrews' neglect of police numbers which saw the Police Academy a virtual ghost town for over two years."

On raw figures, crime offences had doubled in Clyde and Clyde North since 2014.

"That's why a Matthew Guy led Liberal National government will build a new 24-hour Clyde North police station," Mr O'Donohue said.

By Brendan Rees Battling the red dust of Northern Territory has paid off for Cranbourne's Jack Simpson who scored a podium finish at Australia's toughest off-road race.

It was a sweet solace for Jack who finished outright third in the Finke Desert Race held in Alice Springs on 8-11 June. This year is also his rookie year on the KTM 500.

"It was a very big race. It's known all around the world I think as the fastest desert race, it was a pretty big achievement even to get third," he said.

Before competing at the intense race, riders take on a prologue race to determine their start position on the day.

"I got 15th in the prologue due to a heap of dust on the way up put my head down and nailed it all the way to Finke."

He finished fourth on Sunday 10 June and moved through the field in an impressive two hours, 12 minutes and 22.5 seconds on Monday 11 June.

"It wasn't the easiest way up (to Finke) but coming home was pretty smooth sailing and once I got around third I backed off to 80 odd per cent and then cruised home."

Sidelined due to injury in 2017, the 22-year old was thrilled to finish third in Australia's toughest off-road race in his rookie year on the KTM 500.

It was also his second attempt at the gruelling race - his first was 2016 and he was sidelined last year after a serious injury prior to the event.

"Definitely an underdog for sure, no one knew had no idea what I was going to do, plus coming from 15th all the way back there to the podium position raised a fair few eyebrows," Jack said.

Asked if the humidity was a challenging factor, he said: "I was up there two weeks before the race so I was definitely zoned in there and was used to the weather."

Debate flares over council budget

By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor has launched a scathing attack on a ratepayer for "throwing around untruth" and labelling his group as "Losers in Exile."

Casey Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne, who was presenting his submission of matters related to draft revised Council Plan 2017-21 and the 2018/19 Budget at a Casey council meeting on Tuesday 19 June, said "Over a million dollar of savings could've been made through this year's budget and last."

Cr Sam Aziz questioned Mr Browne as to how he arrived at that figure saying "It's very easy for you to turn up here and throw around the mantra that this is the tip of the iceberg when in fact it's not."

"I called you previously the 'Casey LIE' because I can't get a word of truth out of you.

That's stands also by the way Losers in Exile," Cr Aziz said in front of a packed public gallery.

Mr Browne said the association was "left scratching their heads" with what he claimed was 9.3 per cent increase in waste collection rate.

He also said: "We are really shocked and dismayed to see the figure of $257,000 being put forward" for the Commit to Casey campaign, whereby Casey Council is calling on the State Government and Opposition to fix Casey's roads and extend the Cranbourne rail line.

Cr Aziz told Mr Browne he was only interested in "evidence based decision making."

"The City of Casey is one of the tightest managed council's in the state and you don't have to take my word for it, just go and ask the Auditor-General that very question."

A debate exchanged between the pair, with Cr Aziz interjecting saying "I'm actually elected by the people of Casey and you're not, you're just self-appointed."

Mr Browne said: "I really do find it offensive the way you've spoken to me Councillor Aziz."

With council's China Engagement Strategy, Mr Browne said $650,000 million had been allocated to china over a two year period and "We're seeing very little value for money; there's no review process."

Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said he made "no apology" for advocating to governments for the Commit to Casey campaign.

"We see this as a big opportunity with two elections coming up in the next 12 months," he said.

"We're going to go for the biggest amount of money in Casey's history during these two elections."

Cr Tim Jackson said council had "done very well" ensuring waste collection costs were kept to a minimum.

"Council cannot charge any more than it costs us to deliver that service," he said.

‘Forced’ to dodge cars

By Brendan Rees Calls have mounted by residents for a footpath to be installed on a busy road in Blind Bight as cars narrowly avoided hitting pedestrians.

Residents want action to be taken on the intersection of Cormorant Close and Blind Bight Road as pedestrians were being forced to walk onto the road for about 150 metres as a footpath was non-existent.

Despite their pleas to Casey Council over the past year, a footpath was yet to be proposed.

Blind Bight resident Bob O'Connell says the road experiences quite a lot of foot traffic, particularly just after school hours and lives were being put at risk.

was "listed for investigation" for the construction of a footpath on Anchorage Drive to Warneet Road.

"Subject to the outcome of this, a pathway will be considered for funding under this program. Paths in this program are prioritised and assessed based on their expected value and need from residents," he said.

Member for Hastings Neale Burgess said he had written twice to the City of Casey about the need for a footpath after being approached by concerned residents.

Mr Burgess said residents had witnessed many near miss accidents at the dangerous intersection.

"There have been 20 accidents and we've had one woman airlifted to hospital.

He said two gum trees were within two metres of the road of where a footpath should be.

"If we could extent the footpath another 150 metres, it's only got to be a gravel path; another 150 metres would solve the problem."

Newborn defies the odds

A Narre Warren mother who was told by doctors to abort her pregnancy has given birth to a healthy baby boy.

Racheal Chadwick says she is glad she went with “her instincts“ not to terminate despite doctors repeated claims there was “something wrong” with her baby.

“With no evidence to support what the doctors were saying, there wasn’t really any other choice for me than to keep my baby and I am so glad that I did,” she said.

The 40-year-old gave birth to a nine pound one baby boy named Logan on 14 March at Monash Clayton Hospital.

“They took one look at him and decided that no testing needed to be done, and that he

was a normal baby,” she said.

However, doctors told Ms Chadwick her baby had a one in three chance of having Down syndrome, a one in 14 chance of having trisomy 13, and a one in 200 chance of having trisomy 18, following a 12 week pregnancy scan.

In a further ultra sound, she was told her baby’s nuchal fold was 9mm. “The normal size is between 2.5mm and 3.5 mm,” Ms Chadwick said.

“I was given three options...one; to continue this pregnancy and see what happens, two; terminate now or three, have a CVS (chorionic villus sampling) test done,” she said.

“I discussed with my partner and we decided to have the testing done.”

Although the results came back normal

doctors told her there was still “something wrong“ with her baby after a 30 week ultrasound: “This time they told me his hands were deformed because he wouldn’t open them.“ But the mother of six refused to listen to doctors and went ahead with her pregnancy.

“Doctors are not always right. If I had of listened to them, I would have terminated a normal healthy baby for no other reason than the doctors not knowing what or if anything was wrong with him,” she said.

“I want others to be aware that doctors can be wrong, and people always, always need to go with their gut instinct.”

Earlier this year, Ms Chadwick celebrated five generations of the same family after her daughter Rhiannon of Cranbourne, gave birth to a baby boy.

St Peter’s college proudly leading the way for Team 11 St Peter's College in Cranbourne East has become the first school to appoint Team 11 ambassadors in support of the region's push for an A-League and W-League admission.

East Campus College captains and avid football fans, Eddie Elbazi and Natalia Girvasi have been given the roles in an initiative driven entirely by the school.

Eddie and Natalia will promote the Team 11 bid throughout the College community while also encouraging fellow students and parents to sign-up to the bid's database and follow its social media channels.

City of Casey has committed up to $23.8 million to ensure Casey Fields has a training and administration base, which would house the region's very own A-League and W-League club.

ers to do more to support Team 11's A-League and W-League push for some time.

"We wanted to be Team 11 ambassadors because we love football and having a club based next door, it's a wonderful opportunity for our school" Eddie said.

"I think Team 11 would be a huge success for the A-League because south-east of Victoria has one of the largest growing populations in Australia and there's heaps of soccer talent and lovers out here, because there are more than 100 local teams."

Year 12 student Natalia said the benefits of having a professional football club in the region would be huge.

"I think Team 11 will have a massive impact on my community because it allows all junior footballers the opportunity to rise to the elite level through pathways and programs the club

is offering," she said.

"Throughout the rest of this year we are going to be encouraging fellow students and the wider community to like the Facebook page, join the Team 11 database and get excited about this wonderful opportunity for our region."

Team 11 Project Manager Matt Windley said he was impressed with the initiative of St Peter's to promote the Team 11 bid with their own ambassadors.

"We really, really appreciate their support; it's part of that whole community binding that we're looking for and that many hands make life work approach," he said.

"The fact that they are so excited about it and the potential of what it could do their school and also the whole community is really heartening."

OPINION They're committed The Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) was formed late in 2015 with an aim of ensuring that accountability, transparency and democracy is upheld in our local government.

Following the council’s very negative response to the association’s establishment the CRRA has further extended and reviewed their purpose. One of the key purposes considered by the CRRA is: “To advocate in the best interests of our communities in relation to local government matters important by them. To advocate with council on matters our communities consider important.”

The CRRA has considered Casey Council’s budgeted $257,000 Commit to Casey Campaign and has decided that we cannot support council in this.

CRRA is strongly in favour of better roads and public transport in Casey, including extension of the Cranbourne railway line to Clyde and local area bus networks running as early as possible.

CRRA believes that Councils do have a role in advocating on behalf of their constituents to state and federal government levels.

However, councils should always consult properly with the broader community on such matters.

CRRA also believes that a line is crossed when a campaign becomes expensive use of ratepayers’ money for political campaigning.

With many Casey councillors being members of a political party and some already announcing they running as candidate for local seats in the state election to be held in November, it is not appropriate for the council to be spending anything on a campaigning.

CRRA recalls the same idea to campaign to support the East West link was taken up in the year of the last state election and was roundly condemned by large numbers of residents who saw it for what it was, electioneering for councillors on community’s funds.

CRRA finds the lack of clarity as to what roads and what rail works the council is calling for in most of the literature is misleading the community, most of the campaign material is just saying “Blame the State Government for the congestion on the road network in Casey.”

This is untrue and omits that there was a time when the only roadworks that took place in Casey for many years was the long-running duplication of Hallam South Road that caused months of chaos through Hampton Park.

CRRA will be making a submission in part relating to the Commit to Casey decision at the budget presentations.

Build a bridge These rail bridges over roads will let emergency vehicles through more easily, except I suppose if it’s actually chocka with peak-hour traffic.

Eventually when they are built.

It is a rather slow trip to and from the city as things stand.

Having jobs out this way may certainly ease some of that road situation, I expect. For the record, the plan to house 200,000 more people in the City of Casey does seem to be happening, whatever we think.

By Brendan Rees A plan to install 20 additional Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs) at the Lynbrook Hotel has been knocked on the head after Casey Councillors voted unanimously against the proposal.

At their 15 May meeting, councillors agreed to write a formal submission against the Lynbrook Hotel's application to increase the number of EGM's from 55 to 75 to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation.

Casey Council Deputy Mayor Cr Wayne Smith said he had concerns additional gaming machines would increase gambling addictions and the level of financial hardship in the community.

Cr Smith added there was already a high amount of pokie machines available to the community.

"There were a lot of responses against this proposal from public consultation," he said.

"We do have a history of not accepting any extra machines; we have been fairly consistent on that one."

The Alliance for Gambling Reform director Susan Rennie said Casey Council's decision to

object the proposal came as no surprise.

"City of Casey suffered the second highest losses of any Victorian municipality in 2017-18 when $127 million was lost across 13 venues with 913 poker machines. Enough is enough," Ms Rennie said.

"The official data shows that a new record will be set in 2017-18 with $109.45 million lost in the 10 months to April 30, 2018, up from $106.42 million in the previous corresponding period."

The Lynbrook Hotel had a history of being stubborn as a pokies operator, particularly in relation to community contributions, Ms Rennie added.

"The Lynbrook Hotel is already generating almost $10 million a year in pokies losses from its existing 55 machines. Council is right to oppose any move that will inflict more harm on the Casey community," she said.

"Increases in losses are accelerating since the government passed new legislation late last year," Ms Rennie said.

"January loss soared from $9.97 million in January 2017 to a record $10.78 million in January 2018."

Casey Council has shot down a proposal from The Lynbrook Hotel to install an additional 20 gaming machines.

School works top class

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne East's St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School has welcomed the addition of new learning spaces.

The $3.1 million project saw the refurbishment of the existing administration building which was turned into a new music and visual arts learning area while the old visual arts room was refurbished into a new administration area.

Other additions included a new basketball court, classrooms and expansion of the car park after works started in May last year and were completed by March.

Member for Cranbourne, Jude Perera officially opened the learning spaces and unveiled a plaque during a ceremony held on Wednesday June 13.

The project benefited from a $1.5 million investment of the State Government while the Catholic Development Fund provided $1.6 million.

St Thomas' began in January 2014 with an enrolment of 125 students in all classes from Prep to Year Six. Principal Brendan Marrinon said it was a proud moment for the school and the upgrades would prepare "children for life."

"It's incredibly important; we were able to enrol another hundred kids," he said.

"We were 303 at the end of last year and now we're 498. We have got a waiting list for next year.

"The biggest part of the project was six classrooms and that includes an environmental science room that's been designed to control humidity so we can propagate plants or have tropical plants because of the tropical microclimate," Mr Marrinon said.

Mr Perera said the school attracted a large number of kids and "making this investment makes sure they will continue to have access to a great local school."

Puppy pal is a lifesaver

By Brendan Rees A four-legged-friend could make all the difference to the life of Damon Willington.

The seven year old's family from Cranbourne are desperate to raise enough money to buy an assistance dog to support their severely autistic son.

Damon was diagnosed with severe autism at the age of two and has no awareness of safety around roads or concept of danger with other hazards.

Mum Amanda Archer says a Smart Pup would help Damon with daily tasks and reduce his anxiety.

"He's non-verbal mostly. He's still low functioning and as he gets older it would just make our whole life easier, bit more independent for him as well," she says.

An assistance dog through Smart Pups, a non-for-profit organisation in Queensland that provides dogs to assist children with special needs would be life-changing for Damon, says Ms Archer.

The cost of the Smart Pup to buy, raise and train is $25,000 and simply out of reach for the family.

"It would be awesome if I did have the money in my pocket but I want to give it a shot for him," said Ms Archer.

"He does have a cat at the moment but we don't have access to take that cat into areas into where he does get quite anxious.

Ms Archer's her two other children, aged eight and 13 are also autistic: "It (Smart Pup) would mainly help with Damon but all the children as well," she said.

A heartless thief who allegedly took off with a motorbike from a Clyde North home has been caught on camera last Saturday morning, 16 June.

First constable Chris Lawson of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit said footage from CCTV from a neighbouring property showed a man walking out the motorbike before riding off on it at about 11am.

The man walked into the open garage, took the helmet off the handle bars and wheeled the bike out, First Const Lawson said.

"He literally walked it out the front of the house, got up to the neighbouring property and off he went," he said.

"Certain bikes have immobilises but it can be bypassed with a roll start which is exactly

what he's done.

"It was only a short period of time, very opportunistic. It's almost like the bloke knew what he was looking for," First Const Lawson said.

Police have released an image of a man they believe can assist their enquiries along with photos of the motorbike which is a 2002 Kawasaki, worth $10,000.

First Const Lawson described the intruder as caucasion, about 40 years old, with dark coloured hair, five foot eight inches in height, solid build and wearing dark coloured pants and a dark hoodie with white writing on the back and left arm.

Take the long road Marketing and advertising are non-negotiable costs of running a successful business.

That was the message from marketing expert Damian Morgan who appeared at a series of Star News Group sponsored seminars this week.

“Most small businesses are bloody good at what they do, but not good at telling their story,“ Mr Morgan said.

He urged small business owners to “educate the market about what you do“ by rolling out a sustained, targeted advertising campaign, with simple messages that grab attention.

“If you get people’s attention and get one message across you’ve done well. Don’t try for two or six (messages)."

He said compelling, engaging advertising made for a “better return on investment“ as it “costs the same to run a bad ad as it does to run a good one“.

“The first job is to get people to look at what you do. You need to cut through in a very noisy world and get people’s attention and a response.“ Mr Morgan said businesses often made the mistake of trying to be all things to all people.

“Business is about solving problems. Identify your target market and when you are most likely to solve their problems. Is it Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day? “If you don’t put your hand up and promote yourself with advertising you lose the sale.

When you have a vacuum it gets filled by the competition.“ Mr Morgan said building a reputation was a long road, one that took patience and investment.

Scouting for end to trash

By Brendan Rees Michaela may be only seven, but she is determined to clean up the community, one piece of rubbish at a time.

A joey scout with the 1st Cranbourne Scout Group, Michaela has been visiting various parks around the City of Casey picking up litter in her own time as part of her Promise Challenge, the highest achievement a joey scout can attain.

Whether it be rain, hail or shine, nothing stops this hard worker from getting out with her bucket and togs and wearing a "great big smile," says Michaela's mum Kirsti Gangi of Narre Warren.

"The first time we went out, it was early on a Saturday morning we went to Livvi's Place in Cranbourne East and it was foggy as anything and she was there with her big jacket and she just loved it," Ms Gangi said.

"I lost sight of her in the fog, and she's there picking up all this rubbish with her tongs - she was having a great time."

Michaela has already inspired others in her clean-up project and hopes more will join her.

"We've already had a couple of people who message me and said that they've seen what she's done and gone out with their bags and tongs and picked up rubbish near their houses," said Ms Gangi.

"It doesn't cost anything I think it makes a big difference and it helps lots of people and animals all at the same time."

Ms Gangi says in Michaela's own words she decided to clean-up the environment "to help the community, and help animals, and help earth... and the neighbours."

Students celebrate

By Brendan Rees From making musical rainsticks to donning a national costume, students of Tooradin Primary school celebrated everything multicultural on a day where 'everyone belongs'.

Reflecting on cultural diversity in Australia, all students embraced Harmony Day on Wednesday 13 June which is all about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background.

Students wore an array of national dress costumes from their culture or in orange, the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. "They were dressed in kimonos, Mexican sombreros, Indian sarees and kurtas, a German dirndl and Italian soccer costumes to name a few," said the school's wellbeing coordinator Rachel Davis.

She said students learnt the importance of Harmony Day through activities including making headbands, origami, playing an Indonesian Game called Sepaktakpow, and creating Australian Koorie Bark paintings.

"Students worked in multi-age groups to move around many interesting activities across the day, each aiming to expand their knowledge and challenge their perspectives of different culture."

Students also decorated their hand prints on a wall to symbolise their school's combined sense of belonging, Ms Davis said.

"Homemade Italian pizzas were quickly devoured at lunchtime and the afternoon featured a performance by 'La Comicia Variety Show' by James Liotta - an Italian comedy show that had students and staff laughing heartily."

Then, on Wednesday 4 July, kids are invited to take part in the free 'Backyard Painting' activity at Bunjil Place. The cubby house there needs some decorative paintings to hang on the walls. Through its annual Red Apple Day, Bowel Cancer Australia encourages people to support its work through the purchase of a Bowel Cancer Awareness ribbon or by running apple themed fundraising activities.

Through the generous donation of apples from local growers, Montague Fresh and Bonview Orchards, St John of God Berwick Hospital hosts an annual fundraising day, where visitors and caregivers are encouraged to give a gold

coin donation in exchange for a fresh apple.

The event not only helps to raise muchneeded funds for the association but also aims to promote awareness around bowel cancer in the hope that early detection will reduce the number of new cases diagnosed each year.

"Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with 90 per cent of cases being curable if caught early enough, it still continues to be one of our biggest killers claiming the lives of 80 Australians each week due to low early detection rates," a St John of God spokesperson said.

"Also called colorectal cancer, bowel cancer affects both men and women equally with eighty per cent of cases exhibiting no known hereditary genetic associations.

"With the rate of cases rising sharply and progressively from the age of 50, it is no longer considered an "old person's" disease. Cancer Council Australia recommends that people aged between 50 and 74 be screened for bowel cancer every one to two years."

Berwick’s hoops success

By Hayley Wildes The Berwick College Basketball Academy is making a name for itself as it racks up impressive wins in tournaments across the state.

Earlier this month, the senior girls claimed the 2018 Victorian College Championship (VCC). This comes off the back of a hugely successful 3x3 state championships in May, which saw the under-19 girls and under-17 boys crowned state champions.

Chris Pentland, the director of the Berwick College Basketball Academy, talked about the program and the improvement he sees in those that participate.

"We've got about 250 kids involved in the basketball academy now, from years 7-12 and we certainly see improvement across the board," he said.

"We have a huge variation in ability and you probably see the greatest growth from the kids that are sort of picking the game up at a base level."

"We've got some great coaches in the program with a lot of experience in high-level play themselves."

The Senior Girls team, who took all before them at the VCC, went through the pool stage undefeated - beating Box Hill (12-point win) and Mater Christi (4-point win) - before facing Box Hill again in the semi final and claiming another win, this time by seven points.

In a highly competitive field and with shorter game lengths - games consist of 2 x 12 minute halves - there was little room for error and the girls from Berwick College took on Rowville Sport Academy in a back and forth final.

"It was pretty tight all the way through. We got a jump on them early and then they got a bit of lead, before we came back late and ended up winning," Pentland said.

"They were super excited to get the win.

for them because they've been together in the program for quite a while."

The team, led by rising star Jaz Shelley who helped Australia claim an incredible gold medal at the under-17 World Championships in 2016 - secured the win over Rowville, 28-22.

Along with Shelley, Tiarni Fallon, Vanessa Fantin, Jess McConchie, Rebecca Peacock and Tamsyn Pentland made up the victorious sixplayer team.

For Fantin, McConchie, Pentland and Shelley, it was their second state championship in

as many months after claiming the 3x3 state championship in May. Berwick College is building a basketball program that is driving improvement in all students and as recent results suggest, they can match it with any school in the state.

After a bye in round 11, the Demons will be looking to solidify their second position on the ladder and push their winning streak out to six games. The last time these two teams met - in Round 1 - the Demons scored a massive 107-point win, 28.12 (180) to 11.7 (73).

There is no doubt that the strength of Casey's AFL affiliate; Melbourne, has played a key role in the team's success. With so much depth and plenty of wins for Melbourne, there are high quality AFL-listed players consistently pulling on the Casey jumper.

The likes of Jeff Garlett (five games), Jayden Hunt (six), Tom Bugg (seven), Cam Pedersen (seven), Billy Stretch (seven) and Jay KennedyHarris (nine) have all been unable to break into Melbourne's team and are playing for their AFL lives in the VFL. That hunger is driving those players and they are performing week in, week out for Casey. To their credit, they are not playing onedimensional, selfish football either - they are

playing the Casey brand of football; tough, pressure-filled and defence driven.

While Stretch, Bugg and Hunt have had standout games, Pedersen's season has been incredibly consistent and at times, matchwinning. In seven games, he has booted 20 goals as a utility - with his composure and sublime foot skills constantly relied upon.

With a plethora of Melbourne-listed players making waves for Casey, the work of VFL-listed players such as Jay Lockhart, Corey Wagner and James Munro can't be underestimated.

They continue to do a heap of heavy lifting for the team and will be vital cogs in the second half of the season.

As we look to the second half of the season, Casey is well-placed to make some noise at the business end of the year.

FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER REVIEW - ROUND 11 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST A blistering start for the Eltham Redbacks was too much for the Casey Comets to handle, going down 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Comets couldn't handle the attacking masterclass of Gianni Falzon - who scored a first half brace - to take a 3-0 lead into half time.

Needing a miracle to come back and win, the Comets battled valiantly and scored two second half goals to put some respectability on the final scoreboard, with the home side doing too much damage in the end.

The loss has the Comets third last on the State 1 League South East table, ahead of Morwell Pegasus and South Springvale, who occupy the bottom two positions.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City is circling around the top two after knocking off North Caulfield 0-3 at Caulfield Park on Sunday afternoon.

The win - which is City's seventh in 11 games - has them narrowly in third spot - only two points from the top of the table.

Ladder leaders Doveton, meanwhile, suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Knox City at Egan Lee Reserve on Saturday night, with the Doves now somewhat vulnerable at the top of the table.

Knox found the only goal of the first half, and couldn't contain the home side after a red card to Anthony Goweid, conceding another two goals in the second half.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Lyndale United powered away in a dominant second half to set up a 3-1 victory over Pakenham United on Saturday afternoon.

The home side scored all of its three goals in the final half, with Pakenham's Karl Cochrane not helping proceedings with a red card.

The Wickers make a call

By Nick Creely Berwick is the latest club to officially vote towards a move into the proposed 'AFL Greater East', after seriously considering moving to the powerful Eastern Football League.

The reigning SEFNL premiers officially endorsed the move at a committee meeting at the club on Tuesday 12 June. Two weeks ago, an advisory committee made up of around 14 members of the club voted unanimously towards a move to AFL Yarra Ranges.

Wickers president Glenn Gambetta told the Gazette it's a major relief to have it all over with.

"It took a lot of our attention, so it's a real relief for us as a club," he said.

"We can now finally get on with the future, and the overall running of our club."

While Gambetta admits the Eastern option was always something they considered after meeting with league officials on a number of occasions, ultimately a number of factors came into play.

"The netball played a big part of it for us - if we go to Eastern, we lose that, and it's just the safest option," he said.

"The competition (AFL Greater East) will be just as competitive as an Eastern Division 2, so it's less risk if we go.

"And we always wanted to keep that country football feel, and to make sure we keep our local rivalries alive."

While Gambetta was pleased with what AFL Yarra Ranges had to offer, he opted to present all the information to the club's members rather than have league officials come out to the club.

He explained that it was important for the club to look objectively in what was a massive decision for the future.

"I wanted to ensure it was a neutral discussion, and to state all the facts about both

The Dandenong Stingrays extracted some revenge on the Oakleigh Chargers at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Rays, whose solitary loss for the season was dealt by the Chargers in Round 5, continued on their merry way to move to 8-1 on the season, strengthening their position at the top of the TAC Cup ladder.

With an array of their guns missing due to Vic Country commitments, the team's depth shone through - as it has done all season long.

Captain Campbell Hustwaite got things underway with the first major of the day and Dandenong jumped out to a 28-12 lead at quarter-time through slick ball movement and couple of late goals in the quarter.

The second quarter was when the Rays made their move. Relentless attack and pressure around the ball saw Dandenong force turnovers and slam on five foals to one for the term.

The barrage of forward 50 entries proved too much as the Rays scored three goals in five minutes after the Chargers put through the first major of the quarter.

The likes of Matthew Cottrell, Reid Nanscawen and William Hamill were really starting to take over the match and Oakleigh had no answers for them.

A 42-point half-time lead was added to in the third term as the Rays made the most of their chances. William Geurts scored two goals for the quarter and Angus Paterson added one too.

Campbell Hustwaite and Hayden Young were sublime and continuing to drive the ball forward. Through the team's hard work, the Rays held a massive 81-27 lead at the final break.

After accurate kicking for the first three quarters, the Rays goalkicking abandoned them in the final term as their dominance in general play only yielded them 1.8 (14), saving the Chargers from what could have been a very ugly final scoreboard.

Despite their inaccuracy in the final quarter, the damage had well and truly been done and the Stingrays ran out 55-point winners, 13.17 (95) to 6.4 (40).

Cranny finds the answers

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 8 It was a game as fierce as the almost arctic conditions.

And in the end, it was Cranbourne who were just cleaner on the outside to upstage a plucky Beaconsfield side who never wavered in intensity, 10.6 (66) to 6.14 (50).

Many eyes were firmly focused on 987-goal champion Marc Holt, with recruit Mitchell Wallace given the dangerous task of quelling the perennial goal machine.

The Beaconsfield midfield were getting terrific first use by Scott Meyer, but fiddled around with the football by hand on the outside to eventually gift the opening goal of the match to Shaun Marusic, who instantly exerted an influence off half-back.

As pressure increased, star midfielder and Casey Demon jet Jimmy Munro was all class, producing plenty of searing runs to get the ball moving the right way.

With spearhead Nathan Langley up and about, the visitors suddenly surged out late in the first quarter, taking in a 10-point lead after slamming on three unanswered goals.

But the home side found their mojo eventually after Leigh McQuillen's side squandered some chances on the other end, and a late flurry courtesy of superb work down the field

by Marusic, Glenn Osborne, Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo gave dangerous forwards such as Nathan Gardiner, Tommy Marks and Nick Russo plenty of chances.

At half time, the home side shivered their way to the rooms with a 16-point advantage, with light drizzle giving them a major advantage.

Champion ruckman Michael Boland was a major casualty early in the third quarter, going down clutching his knee after getting his leg trapped underneath a teammate in a marking contest.

Despite holding firm in a tense, fierce final half that was perhaps reflected by the home side's accuracy (3.3 to 2.9), O'Brien was proud of his side to adapt in a game that didn't quite going for them.

"I don't think we ever really got our game going, and credit to Beaconsfield for that - it was quite a contested game, so yeah, we had little patches where we opened them up and hit the scoreboard, and it was telling in the end," he said.

That ability to hit the scoreboard when it mattered was reflected in the home side's lacklustre third quarter, in which youngster Nick Russo kept Beaconsfield at bay with a gritty set shot from a tough angle to stretch the margin to 15-points deep in the quarter.

In a low scoring affair, it was arguably the most important moment of the match.

But O'Brien praised his midfield for battling through and exerting maximum pressure, and his defensive unit for its resolute effort in a tense final term.

"The midfield was even, if anything they might have won it in the end - once Boland went off injured, we battled hard, and probably weight of numbers took its toll in the second half," he said.

"Scotty (Meyer) probably got on top, and they surged the ball forward a bit. "(And) our backlines a real strength of ours, we have a lot of trust in our guys down there but they need support, and a lot of that comes down to the pressure being applied down the field.

"If you don't have that pressure, they will be exposed, and that's an area we've been really good at it."

In what turned into a hard fought loss, Jake Bowd, Munro, Meyer and Riley Welsh were outstanding for the visitors, while Nathan Langley and Taylor Joyce battled valiantly to kick five of the six goals against a sturdy defence.

For Cranbourne, Marusic relished the conditions, while the likes of Glenn Osborne, the

versatile Troy Tharle and Nathan Gardiner all impacted the game.

The conditions - which were hard for players to adjust to - proved crucial in a low scoring contest, with the home side able to overcome some fierce wind.

Berwick, meanwhile, emerged from an almighty scrap with Officer to take the four points at Edwin Flack Reserve, 8.15 (63) to 2.6 (18).

After two consecutive losses - which is foreign territory for the reigning premiers - some sort of response was certainly necessary for Stewart Kemperman's side.

The rain pelted down, and the Wickers were simply more physical at the contest, surging out to a 25-point quarter time lead, holding the Kangaroos goalless.

On a day where clean hands where a must, Madi Andrews had a superb opening term, combining nicely with a dangerous Bailey Asher early in the contest.

The Kangaroos were unable to hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way until the third term when the game was effectively over, with the Wickers' incredible team defence finally being undone by a fifty metre penalty duly slotted by Harry Dean in the goal square.

Doug Koop's side showed a bit of steel to register another goal by three quarter time, but were held scoreless in the final term as the home side surged home to boot a further three majors.

Finally back on the winners list, the Wickers were well served by Asher (two goals) and Brody Connelly (two), while Madi Andrews and Travis Tuck certainly relished the conditions at hand.

"Earlier in the year, we played Narre Warren in similar conditions, we didn't adjust quickly, and it was good to take some learnings from that into the weekend," Wickers coach Stewart Kemperman said.

Kemperman said it was important that his side could bounce back from two fadeout loss-

es in recent weeks.

"Winning habits are good habits, and it's important to get back into that winning circle," he said.

"The losses have been interesting, we've had strong efforts in both games - in the Cranbourne game, we had a bad lapse, and against Narre our effort was tremendous.

"It was more the polish - we know our best footy is ahead of us, so we're going to continue to work and hopefully it'll all just come together."

Down at Kalora Park, the undefeated Narre Warren not only brushed aside the weather, but kicked another 23 goals, in a testament to their belief.

Pakenham were nothing but gallant in their 23.15 (153) to 8.8 (56) loss, but were ultimately outclassed by a side at the top of their game.

Ash Green's side were defensively solid as they have all season in the first term, conceding just the three goals while piling on two themselves to be holding an eight-point deficit at quarter time.

But a dominant second term saw the home side surge away to a 47-point lead, with Brad Scalzo, Michael Collins, Mitch Cox and Josh Tonna was all class as they kicked the ball forward into the hungry arms of Nick and Stew Scanlon, as well as Aaron Wilson, who warmed into the game with a towering presence.

The Lions - to their credit - managed to stem the bleeding briefly with a terrific 30-minutes in the third term, winning the quarter and showcasing some impressive efforts in the contest.

The Magpies' overriding control over the contest continued on with a dominant final term, slamming through 10.5 to just 0.2, flexing their muscles when it mattered.

Primed Panthers pounce on Demons

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 9 Rowville was overrun by South Croydon in the second half on Saturday, falling 8.5 (53) to 12.17 (89).Leading by one-point at half-time, the Hawks only managed three goals in the second half, while the Bulldogs put through eight majors.

Damian Garner was best for the Hawks, while Aiden Quigley, Ziggie Alwan and Riley D'Arcy booted two goals each.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 10 Devon Meadows bounced back from last week with a brilliant final quarter comeback against Rye at Glover on Saturday, 13.5 (83) to 10.10 (70). The Panthers trailed by 22 points at three quarter time and looked to be fading away to another loss, but slammed on six unanswered goals to run away with the four points.

Michael Theodoridis was the star with six majors next to his name, while the likes of Troy Aust, Allan Murray and Cal O'Hare were solid all day.

Down at Pearcedale, the Panthers were thumped by Hastings, 10.4 (64) to 19.14 (128).

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3 - ROUND 8 Endeavour Hills - despite inaccurate goal kicking - took care of Heatherton, 6.15 (51) to 5.2 (32).

Nick Gay and Ben Moriarty were involved in everything for the Falcons and Jarrod Marolla kicked three majors. For Heatherton, Ben Clark-Henry and Mehdi Daoud were impressive.

Springvale Districts was dominant from start to finish to claim a massive win over South Yarra, 6.7 (43) to 16.29 (115).

Stefan Feehan (six goals) was irresistible up forward for Springvale Districts and David Monaghan and George Angelopoulos were important all day.

Meanwhile, Hampton Park piled on 15 goals to one in the second half to demolish Hallam, 2.4 (16) to 20.11 (131). Jackson Fry was the star of the day as he booted nine majors in a dominant display.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 9 Dandenong finally broke through for their maiden win of the season.

Taking on Moorabbin at Greaves Reserve, the Redlegs claimed a hard-fought and welldeserved 17.4 (106) to 14.11 (95) win. Kiat Tut and Michael Lawrence were crucial in getting the Redlegs home.

Lyndale was far too strong for Sandown, claiming a 13.6 (84) to 6.9 (45) win. The Cobras were dominated in the second half, but James

Tate and Nicholas Morrish were notable for Sandown.

Carrum Patterson Lakes was unable to match Lyndhurst after quarter-time as they went down, 7.11 (53) to 3.3 (21). Carrum Patterson Lakes failed to score a goal after quarter-time and only mustered one-point in the second half.

Ben Hiam was best afield, while Aaron Cocker and Hamish Browning (three goals) were dominant for the Lightning. Shane Dunn and Steven Cormack were relentless for Carrum Patterson Lakes, despite the loss.

Cavaliers catch fire, claim a key win

The State Championship Men scored a crucial win on the road against Knox on Sunday. A strong first half set up the win as Casey claimed an 80-90 victory.

Matt Donlan (26 points) and Brent Hobba (20 points) combined for nine triples as the Cavs shot the lights out, denying the Raiders any chances of a comeback.

Raheem Lemons (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Ben Louis (12 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds) were also brilliant in a confidence-building win. The Cavs currently sit seventh on the ladder, with an 8-6 record.

The Division 1 Women continued their incredible form and are riding a seven-game winning streak after taking care of Camberwell, 61-50, at home on Sunday.

Casey won every quarter and were led by the usual suspects of Tanarly Hood (23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Jamie-Lee Jeffs (13 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists) and Tarryn Wilkin (12 rebounds, 9 points).

The Cavs sit second on the ladder with a 13-2 record.

The Youth League 1 Men took it right up to the undefeated Sunbury Jets, but ultimately fell, 70-73.

This weekend sees a massive State Championship Men and Division 1 Women doubleheader tip off from 6pm at Casey Stadium on Saturday. Both teams then hit the road on Sunday, with the men taking on Eltham and the women facing Western Port.

The Youth League 2 Women face Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday evening on the road, while the Youth League 1 Men travel to Warrandyte on Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday afternoon to face Coburg.

Oneata Schwalger had one goal in mind. And anyone that has ever seen her step on a rugby field knows that she won't take a backwards step when she has her sights set on achieving something.

Last week, Oneata's dream of signing with a team for the inaugural National Rugby League Women's Premiership competition was realised.

Now officially a member of the St George Illawarra Dragons, Oneata - who plays locally for South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club is still coming to terms with the achievement.

"That was the goal. I'm really stoked and still sort of crying every day, it comes in waves," she said.

"Until I'm up there with the girls, I don't think it will truly sink in."

Oneata has played rugby union at the highest level, both nationally and internationally, and making the switch to rugby league has clearly paid dividends.

She had been on the radar of scouts for some time, but her play at the Women's National Rugby League Championships on the Gold Coast last month solidified her as a sure thing to be signed.

The competition, which will see the Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Sydney Roosters and St George field teams, kicks off in early September with all games to be played as curtain-raisers to NRL finals games.

All teams will play each other once, before the top two teams face off in a grand final played before the NRL Grand Final in Sydney on 30 September.

"I think on that day, it's going to blow up for women's rugby league in Australia, it really will. This is just the start and it's really exciting," Oneata said.

The 32-year-old, mother of two will be relocating to Wollongong for eight weeks to ensure she can attend all trainings and get the most out of herself. Whilst she admits it will be hard to leave her kids, she is looking forward to the experience.

"I'll be up there for the eight weeks. I went to Wollongong for the Jillaroos camp last year and it was stunning, so I'm not going to be complaining. Outside of work and training, I'll just be on the beach," she said with a laugh.

Another aspect that makes the achievement even more incredible is the fact that Oneata is the only Victorian to be signed by any team.

With her ruthless style of play and nonstop engine that powers her through countless packs, there is no doubt that Oneata Schwalger will do Victoria and the South East proud every time she steps on the field.
