CRYSTAL BROOK

12336224-ACM13-17

While in the winter months, there can be an allure to hibernate in the comfort of your own surrounds, we here at 'Tourist News' encourage you to pry yourself away from the warmth of your heater. Thankfully, you won't need too much convincing, with plenty still happening during the cooler months in the Yarra Ranges. In our 2018 winter edition, we've highlighted both some of the bigger, more well-known attractions in the region - as well as dug up a few hidden gems for you. On the more well-known end of the scale, why not consider partaking in some snow play at Lake Mountain Resort. One of the true jewels of the region, the Resort offers easy access to various trails as well as a dedicated snow-play area, which is perfect for first-timers or those seeking to enjoy this wondrous environment. On the other end, despite its renowned vibrancy, we've sought to reveal the truly magical theatre scene in the Yarra Ranges. Filled with talented individuals, as well as opportunities for willing audiences, we've sought out some of the best shows on offer in the region. For the little more adventurous, perhaps check out our regular 'Wine Country' section. However, if it's a quick day-trip that you're after, we've highlighted just how much can be achieved in a short period, while driving through to terrific Toolangi! We've also underlined five reasons that you should venture a little farther east and visit the historic townships of Gembrook and Cockatoo. So this winter, please do put on your winter woollies - but I'm afraid there is too much on offer to sit at home in front of the heater. Get out there and explore the Yarra Ranges this winter! Peter Douglas, Editor

TRIP ADVICE

FIVE REASONS TO VISIT COCKATOO

1. Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre: Unfortunately, such incredible landscape can also come at a high cost. One of those was the horrific Ash Wednesday bushfires, which hit the region, and others in Victoria, in 1983. The recently opened centre offers a terrific memorial, as well a chance to educate visitors and the community. Historic information is shown through photos, touch screens and big screens. 4. Sports of all sorts. Every weekend, the town comes alive with community-based sport. The Cockatoo Sports Complex is a site to behold and a great place to check out. The complex comprises an indoor stadium, oval, athletics track and netball courts. Meanwhile, there are plenty of options if you'd like to get a little more physical. Tennis courts, basketball courts, a bowling club and plenty of other recreational facilities.

2. Bushwalking: The natural beauty of the area entices one to delve further into the landscape. Thankfully, Wright Forest offers a great chance for walkers of all skill levels to partake. Wright Forest is a 161-hectare reserve and fauna sanctuary, home to many animal species such as the brushtail possum and wombats.

3. Scenic drive: As you'd expect with such lush surrounds, there are plenty of neat short-trips in which you can explore via four wheels. For example, travelling south, the Pakenham Road takes in Cockatoo Creek and some incredible eucalypt forests. Or, why not try a drive north towards Woori Yallock. The incredible backdrop will be the surrounding mountain ranges.

5. Historic main street: After such a busy day, you'll no doubt love the opportunity to wind down and enjoy a refreshing beverage or light meal. The main street of Cockatoo features a surprising array of cafe's and eateries in which you can find a delicious bargain.

WINTER DAY IN TOOLANGI

A DAY IN TOOLANGI BY PETER DOUGLAS THE drive to Toolangi - along the Healesville-Kinglake Road - is reason enough on its own to visit the beautiful township. Surrounded by some incredible forest sceneries, the popular destination is simply magic for those seeking a quiet little day-trip, or perhaps a place to rest a weary head. With plenty of established tourist destinations, and a cosy cottage vibe, there are few places better in Victoria to enjoy a visit. 9AM The Kalatha Giant: If you're going to experience Toolangi, you need to experience the natural environment in all its glorious wonder. So why not start off with this amazing specimen. Despite the area being hit by several major fires, the Kalatha Giant, standing about 65m tall, has survived and emerged more impressive than ever. The Kalatha Giant is located within the Toolangi State Forest, alongside the Kalatha Creek. Some medium-level walking is required, with a boardwalk available where you can learn more about the forest ecosystem.

DELWP's Michael Morley and Steve Meacher at the Kalatha Giant. Local birds and native animals can often be observed at the Singing Gardens.

6 WINTER 2018

10AM Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk: After your brisk walk in the morning, perhaps it's better to pack a light brunch. But while the morning light is peaking - take to the Wirrawilla boardwalk circuit, which directs its participants through the forest environment (about 2km in length). Located on Sylvia Creek Road, the walk allows you to take in the sounds and scents of the forest, characterised by the Myrtle Beech and Sassafras trees. Other trails are available around the area, if you so desire. The location is a photographer's dream, too. NOON Singing Gardens: Now you're full of energy due to a morning in the forest, it's time to soak up a piece of local history. This particular garden is the former home of poet laureate C.J Dennis. Through the years, the property eventually fell into the hands of Jan and Vic, who have maintained the original garden design. To this day, you can still see some of the original trees and shrubs. Of course, to get the full experience - why not arrange for a guided tour of this incredible property. 2PM Toolangi Discovery Centre & Ecology Cafe It's fair to say that we've had a big day already, so it may be time to recharge the batteries. Located in Main Road, and nestled among the forest, take a trip to the Toolangi Discovery Centre and check out the cafe. Enjoy one of the many fine warm beverages on offer, or perhaps top up your energy levels with some enticing treats. Like most of Toolangi, the scenery is truly spectacular. 4PM Toolangi Sculpture Trail: It'd be blasphemy to visit Toolangi without a visit to the Toolangi Sculpture Trail. The trail, about 2km in length, offers an amazing walk through the Toolangi Bushland Reserve and takes about one hour to complete. Starting just behind the car park of the Discovery Centre, the trail - created in 1996 and enhanced again in 2016 - comprises many fascinating sculptures. It's perfect for the family, because kids will love picking out the sculptures. Don't forget the camera! 6PM Eats and fun: As you'd expect with the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the town - there are plenty of great options to enjoy a meal. Check out the main town and delve into the many great delights on offer. Whatever your fancy may be - a hearty pub meal or fine dining at a restaurant - Toolangi has you covered. The perfect way to end the perfect day! Touristnews

WINTER IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

SIX STUNNING TRAILS TO DISCOVER BY PETER DOUGLAS No matter what level of walk you are seeking - a short, brisk, or challenging one - there are plenty of incredible options for you in the Yarra Ranges. Surrounded by such wonderful natural surrounds, and native bushlands and forests, it's simply a must for any local or visitor to venture outdoors and discover a favourite trail. Whether it's the challenge of scaling the 1000 Steps, or wandering throughout the wondrous Birdsland Reserve, there is inspiration aplenty.

The serenity of Birdsland Reserve.

1. BIRDSLAND RESERVE A great little option is you're seeking some time away from the 'rat race'. Birdsland is a 75ha bushland reserve which opened to the public in 1984 as a community bushland reserve. The area comprises many walking, riding and mountain biking trails, including the Dargon Trail which connects trail-users to Lysterfield Lake Park. More than 130 different native birds have been identified in the reserve, including the Wedge-tailed Eagle and Powerful Owl. 2. 1000 STEPS This hugely popular exercise option gives participants a little taste of the exhaustion endured by Australian soldiers who followed the Kokoda Trail, in Papua New Guinea, in World War II. Through the many tree ferns, and manna gum, you work your way through some incredible scenery to the top of the hill. The steps themselves are step and are not recommended for those with medical conditions. For those who can, make sure to observe the plaques that honour those who fought and died during the Kokoda campaign. 3. MARYSVILLE There are many trail options within the mountainous Marysville area. One option is the Tree Fern Gully Trail, which snakes through the hills of Marysville and finishes up at the stunning Steavenson Falls. Popular among local hiking groups, the relatively easy trails measures about 8.65km in length and takes just over one hour to complete one way, with very few step gradients to conquer. The trail is lined with beautiful old trees and colourful flora. 4. GRANTS While Grants Picnic Ground at Sherbrooke is mostly known for its enticing

cafe and the chance to enjoy the bird-feeding area - there are many fantastic trails that surround. Starting from the picnic grounds, the trails enable you to take in some incredible scenery and spot some equally amazing plants and animals. Among the options include: Margaret Lester Forest Walk (300m); Hard Gully Nature Walk (700m); Eastern Sherbrooke Forest Walk (7.1km). 5. WARBURTON-LILYDALE TRAIL Measuring 38km in distance - and perfect for trail-walkers, cyclists or horseriders - the hugely popular trail follows a historical railway line, which was established in the 1900s. Not only can you take time to pass through some incredible bushland and wineries, the track takes in some of the popular towns of the regions, including: Wandin, Woori Yallock, Seville, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Wesburn, Millgrove and more. All great places to enjoy a bite or some light refreshments. 6. MT DONNA BUANG Many different types of trails are available from the top of stunning Mt Donna Buang. For some, just strolling around the summit may be inspiration enough. While, for others, the climb up the 21m observation tower - with panoramic views of the park - may provide enough adventure. Having said that, some of the more popular trial options range from between 1km to 6km, with a relatively moderate grade and easy-to-follow trails. **In winter, there can be snowfalls. So check conditions before setting off.

BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT CHRISTMAS. The holiday so nice you can have it twice. For visitors to the Dandenong Ranges, Christmas in its usual month of December is a hot and sweaty experience, likely to be filled with seafood and salad, great champagne, and luscious desserts. But, Christmas in winter is a classic setting and is all about traditional fare. Hot roasts and gravy with lots of vegetables. Ham off the bone, turkey, apple sauce, or cranberry and steaming plum pudding with brandy custard. As the mercury plummets and the winter mists swirl around the tall trees or cloak the valleys, the atmosphere is set and appetites primed for the sort of Christmas fare that you really just can't enjoy in December. Winter in July has become considerably popular over the years and as temperatures fall, the Dandenong Ranges still remains the perfect location to celebrate Christmas in July with various restaurants hosting cosy lunches and dinners . There's a variety to choose from with several cafes and restaurants dusting off the Christmas CD's, Priming log fires, and putting up the tinsel to recreate the sort of Christmas reminiscent of Northern Hemisphere Christmas cards and movies that aren't really quite right in hot December. With a small sampling of frost covering the ground, and maybe even a bit of snow on the trees, bring your friends and family to enjoy some great food

WINTER IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

LIGHT THE NIGHT BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT THE shortest day of the year is also the brightest night in Belgrave. Across the Yarra Ranges, winter is settling in. In some parts, people will search out old thick woollen blankets, while for others the slight nip in the air in the early mornings and late evenings is enough to start a warm crackling fire in their home. Though, the nights become longer, darker and colder, there are some people working to ensure that some form light and warmth is returned to winter and on one significant day in winter that light shines for all to see. Amid the whirl of winter, many are vaguely aware of the approach of the winter solstice; its significance heralds the onset of warmer months and promises the gradual return of the sun. All over the world, people come together in their communities to acknowledge this important moment, celebrating with festivals, food, music, rituals, costumes, arts and more. For those in the Yarra Ranges, it holds a different meaning and is a day when close and local communities can come together to celebrate the shortest day of the year. They celebrate by lighting the night with spirit, songs and thousands of lanterns. Each year, thousands of residents from the Dandenong Ranges take to the streets of Belgrave with intricate homemade lanterns to help light the cold winter's night and welcome the lengthening of days. The lanterns are only half as warm as the smiling, glowing faces of the participants who hold them and their warmth soon overcomes the night's cold as friendly faces welcome strangers who view the spectacle to join in the fun. Each year, a river of dazzling glowing lanterns flows down Belgrave Main Street. Bright lights and radiant fire twirlers are dotted throughout the quaint little town and the night is filled with a string of scintillating colours. This practice and festival is also shared throughout other parts of the Yarra Ranges, with Yarra Glen and Warburton both holding their own lantern festival. The Belgrave Lantern Parade has long been warming the heart of its residents, and it attracts thousands of people from neighbouring communities, and those seeking to bring a bit of warmth to winter. Easy to get to, and easy to find, a train can be caught to Belgrave from the city and only a minute's walk from the station the festival can be found taking place on the main street of Belgrave. So, on 23 June, come and express yourself with your lanterns, your outfits, and your festive spirit.

There''s plenty of music, light and cheer.

A toadstool lantern is just oen of the many creative lanterns that can be seen.

WINTER 2018 13

WINTER DAY IN MARYSVILLE

MAGNIFICENT MARYSVILLE BY PETER DOUGLAS There wouldn't be too many locations in Victoria more naturally beautiful than Marysville. With such a great balance between incredible natural surrounds and some legitimate tourism options, Marysville is a must-visit for those looking for something a little different. Just some of the attractions include Bruno's Art Gallery and Gallipoli Park. Put this on your bucket-list for the region; nestled among the rainforest setting at Bruno's Art Gallery lives a collection of unforgettable characters, lovingly hand-crafted by Bruno from clay and fire onsite in his kiln. Meanwhile, Gallipoli Park, located along Falls Road, recently underwent a $1.8 million park redevelopment after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. Among the features are a children's playground and a reflective garden. The park itself comprises: The Kin Playspace, Reflective Garden, New Life Sculpture, a gazebo and garden rooms. If you're looking to get back to nature, Marysville has that covered, too. Steavenson falls is simply a 'knock-out' of a location. One option to visit the site is via the Keppel Lookout Trail; the trail starts at Kings Road Car Park and winds up through the forest to four of the region's top lookouts. Follow the trail across Robertson Gully before climbing up to Keppell Lookout, around the ridge - passing Oxlee and De La Rue lookouts - and to the top of Steavenson Falls. While it may be tempting to cram in all these wonderful options, perhaps another way to enjoy Marysville is simply to take a leisurely drive. The Lady Talbot Forest drive is a popular choice for many visitors and locals alike. Starting at Woods Point Road, the drive follows the Tagerty River Valley up to the top of Mount Margaret Gap. From there, complete the 46km Lady Talbot drive by continuing down Mount Margaret Road, through the state forest to the Buxton-Marysville Road, and back to Marysville. Don't forget to take your time and enjoy!

Superb Steavenson Falls.

GARDENS The visually stunning Parterre Gardens.

INFORMATIVE GARDEN EXPERIENCE It has been designed with shade and comfort in mind. Plant names are on view to educate and inform visitors about the garden. Work first started at Alowyn Gardens in 1997 with extensive clearing and cleaning up of the weed and blackberry infested paddocks. A soil-management plan began in earnest to revitalise the soil, which had been depleted of goodness over 20 years as a trotting stud. The first tree was planted in 1999. The gardens have been developed into six distinct areas all leading from one magnificent 100m long wisteria and rose covered abor. The total garden space takes up about four acres. The six areas are: ■

The Perennial Border Garden;

The Dry Garden;

Devonshire Ìi>Ê> Ê`>Þ

The Edible Garden; The Forest Garden; ■ The Parterre Garden; ■ The Display Gardens. 'Alowyn' has a delightful sitting area - the Maple Courtyard. Up to 100 visitors can be catered for in comfort and shade. The kiosk has coffee, tea, cool drinks and cakes available at all times. The Courtyard also features a Giant Chessboard! There is an exciting large plant nursery to explore with a range of really interesting plants to entice the keen gardener. Perennials, herbs, trees, shrubs, native plants, water plants, roses, groundcovers and succulents to name a few. *Opening hours: Every day of the week: 10am to 5pm. Refreshments and a selection of products are available from the gift store in the Lavender Cottage Tea Rooms. BY KATH GANNAWAY YES, it's cold in Warburton in Winter. You've got the cocoon of mountains drawing down the mists, the icy head-waters of the Yarra River pounding through the town, and the snow-play fun of Mount Donna Buang just 15 minutes away. It's a town that absolutely celebrates winter both indoors, and out and it's no co-incidence that the Warburton Film Festival is held mid-winter - this year on 15, 16 and 17 June. The three-day festival, now in its 35th year, attracts film-buffs from near and far to enjoy Australian and international films in the cosy Mecca Theatre. There's really no reason to even venture outdoors if you choose not to - just pack the scarf and gloves and make the most of the opportunity to relax and enjoy film after film. Or, pick and choose your films and step out in between for a brisk stroll along the river walks, check out the local shops, or chill out at one of the many great cafes and restaurants. Hosted by the Yarra Ranges Film Society the 2018 program comprises a wide diversity of genres. The eight films chosen include drama, documentary, comedy, and science fiction from six different countries of origin. All the films were released in the last three years and were selected not only for their excellent qualities but also because of their limited release in Australian cinemas. One session this year is devoted entirely to short films where the the winners of the four sections of the festival's Show Us Your Shorts competition will be screened, along with an international short film. The festival is a marathon celebration of film and film-lovers including the Official Grand Opening with finger food and wine on the Friday night, and the Festival Dinner on Saturday evening. It's a chance to get away from day to day life and immerse yourself in a feast of film in what truly is the Yarra Valley's most historic, and most charming town. This year's program starts with the documentary 'Mountain' in which Jennifer Peedom explores mankind's fascination with mountains. Featuring a stunningly beautiful combination of breathtaking cinematography and

The Athenaeum Theatre in Lilydale is one of the region''s many historic theatres. simple narrative and imaginative play. With two sessions on Monday, 9 July, it's great holiday entertainment. It follows on from a production at the Montrose Town Centre on Wednesday, 4 July. The Arts Centre, Warburton, also a Yarra Ranges Council cultural centre, has one for the kids also with 'Josephine Wants to Dance', a new musical based on the book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley taking to the stage at The Mecca for two productions on Saturday, 23 June. And, in a Yarra Ranges encore, Warburton will host the Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow on Wednesday, 4 July. Across the valley, The Memo in Healesville is another of Yarra Ranges Council's state of the art theatres providing a range of live theatre, music and art as part of their Culture Tracks program. The Memo plays host to 'Josephine Wants to Dance' on Saturday, 30 June. Visit http://ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Whats_On/Culture_Tracks_2018 for a full program of events at Yarra Ranges Council's cultural venues. At the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, The Basin Theatre will delve into colonial history with 'Burke's Company' - a recreation of the disastrous Burke and Wills' expedition. The story may be familiar, but Bill Reed's version treats it in a very different way. The seasons runs from 10 August to 1 September. www.thebasintheatre.org.au . Lilydale's magnificent Athenaeum is one of the most beautiful and elaborately adorned local theatres in the region. BY KATH GANNAWAY A good play knows no seasons, just the same, when it's cold outside, and you're starting to feel hermit-syndrome taking hold, an afternoon or evening of live theatre is a cosy way to break free. From small local theatre companies that have been part of the cultural fabric of the region for decades, to venues that accommodate touring theatre companies, and some of the more innovative youth theatre groups, there is a live theatre experience waiting in the wings over winter somewhere in Yarra Ranges. Gemco Players in Emerald has the launch of Gemco Little Theatre with their One Act Play Season on 15, 16 and 17 June. Comprising two plays by Kylie Rackham, 'Ravaged' and 'Aftermath'. The Gemco Youth Mid-year Performance from 22-24 June is a showcase of the up and coming talent of Gemco. Sometimes a short play, or a preview of submissions to the One Act Play Festival, it's an opportunity to enjoy the energy and creativity of youth theatre. In July, the 24th Dandenong Ranges One Act play Festival offers a full weekend of entertainment for $35. www.gemcoplayers.org . The 1812 Theatre in Upper Ferntree Gully delves into a favourite Hollywood classic with 'Dial M for Murder' by Chris Procter scheduled for The Lowe Auditorium from 26 July to 18 August. This theatre, hidden away in a quite back street of Upper Ferntree Gully had its beginnings in the 1940s as the Ferntree Gully Arts Society Repertory Players and is one of the longest running theatre groups in Melbourne. Along with the Athenaeum in Lilydale, it's a delightful old-style theatre experience. www.1812theatre.com.au . Burrinja in Upwey is one of Yarra Ranges shire's relatively new theatre spaces, but in June, it will be decidedly 'old school' when The Lux Radio Theatre presents The Agatha Christie Radio Mysteries. Who could resist sitting around the radio to listen in to Agatha's 'Personal Call' and 'Butter in a Lordly Dish' as they come to life on stage? One day only, Sunday, 10 June. On Wednesday, 2 June, Burrinja hosts the Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow, a roving tour-de-comedy that features funny-makers from Australia and beyond in a side-splitting show. www.burrinja.org.au For the kids, 'Dinosaur Time Machine', rated Best Children's Show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, is a fabulous fun, family show of circus, puppetry,

Whether a fan of a straight-up espresso, a creamy cappuccino or a smooth latte, there are numerous cafes dotted along the main streets of local leafy suburbs which are ready to supply a caffeine hit. While noted for its prowess in winemaking, the Yarra Ranges also provides a respectable trade in coffee with numerous local cafe blends and local coffee and tea companies.

For example, Healesville's Harvest Cafe is a known hot-spot if you're seeking the perfect cup of coffee. The much-loved cafe boasts a great coffee blend, good extraction and perfectly textured milk, which all help when making a tasty beverage. Coffee consumption is a staple around the Yarra Ranges - so, take note and dive right in. For those who can handle the taste, a shot of espresso is a great morning pick-me-up, while creamy coffees, such as lattes, are better for an afternoon wind-down.

With the great variance in cafes, coffee blends and sizes across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, prices can differ greatly for a cup of coffee. Prices generally range from $3-$4 for a regular cup, and about $1 extra for a mug and 50 cents extra for soy milk or a double shot, though each individual shop will have its own prices. While price isn't always indicative of quality, there aren't many places to go wrong when it comes to a great coffee in the area, and there's no better way of finding a cafe to suit a person's individual style than adventuring by foot through the towns. And the views of the beautiful Yarra Ranges are just a bonus! 12336226-PB13-17

WINE COUNTRY

MANAGER, WILD CATTLE CREEK BY KATH GANNAWAY How long have you been in the hospitality industry? And how did you start out? I started in the kitchen as an apprentice chef, way back in about 91. I quit after two years as an apprentice chef when I realised I liked cooking too much to do it as a job. I went from chefing to acting, which I did for a good seven years, taking on waitering jobs to pay the bills. Eventually I looked at it and thought 'which one is paying the bills here' and somehow, ended up from being a North Queensland actor to managing an estate in the Yarra Valley. It's been a good journey. Does the acting experience help? I did predominately stage, some Shakespeare, a bit of screen and a lot of 'bit' roles. Up until 18 months ago I was front of house, so the acting always helps; you're on show the whole time. What is your most memorable meal? It was in Bali. I couldn't tell you the name of the restaurant, but it was an amazing hot and spicy sea food extravaganza, and being Bali, at a ridiculous price. I tipped twice the amount I paid for the meal and the owner came out, closed the restaurant and drank beer with me for the rest of the afternoon. What makes a memorable Yarra Valley dining experience? For me, the thing is to make sure you have some beautiful views going on, some great locally sourced produce, cooked well, and paired with a beautiful bottle of Yarra Valley wine - preferably a Pinot Noir for me. What qualities do you look for in hospitality staff? It's all about personality. I would sooner have someone with personality who can carry one plate than a robot who can carry five. That person has to be there to make sure that the diner is having a good time. How important is it to a restaurant to have a good barista? I would never call myself a barista, but I did a bit of time at the coffee machine and this is my thought on coffee - it's the last thing a person has before they leave the restaurant and they can literally leave with a bad taste in their mouth and they won't return. I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes

to coffee, I believe it should be espresso or white! What is the biggest challenge in managing a multi-faceted business? That's an interesting question. This was all thrown at me about year ago when we had a change of ownership. I was just doing restaurant at that time. I do the clever thing and make sure I have good people in charge of accommodation, weddings, kitchen ... you surround yourself with people who are better at those things than you are and I'm lucky at Wild Cattle Creek to have those people. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love it when people leave having had a good experience, and that's not to say just a good meal. It's the whole thing - the meal, the wine, the atmosphere ... everything. And, I'm loving being involved in the winemaking process. Travis (Bush) at Greenstone is our winemaker. I knew nothing about it and Travis has been so generous about sharing his knowledge. Bottling the first vintage after growing the fruit is an amazing experience. When I went over to Greenstone and got to do a tasting, that was a really good feeling. You've invited friends to join you for a picnic lunch on the banks of the Yarra River at Warburton. What Yarra Valley wine would you take along? I have to say one of mine. If we're talking a nice sunny afternoon, then a Wild Cattle Creek Rose. I've fallen in love with this wine. I always say to people, go grab some cheese, a bottle of Yarra Valley wine and some crusty bread and sit by the river at Warburton and there's your Yarra Valley experience. Keeping in mind that you ARE on a picnic ... is it ever acceptable to drink wine from a plastic cup? That's a hard call; the foodie/wine side of me wants to say absolutely not, but I'm compelled to say if the wine is good enough, it doesn't matter what the vessel is ... just not out of the bottle!

FARM FRESH

NEW SEASON PRODUCE ON OFFER Winter is the perfect time to get out and about and rediscover the wonderful produce that abouts in the Yarra Valley. Members of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group invite you to come and join them at the monthly farmers' market held on the third Sunday of every month in the historic barn at Yering Station (38 Melba Highway, Yarra Glen). Enjoy the first picking of the new season apples and vegetables, locally handmade bread, biscuits, jams, chutneys, sauces, teas, coffees, spices, local honey, delicious Yarra Valley made chocolate. The YVRFG farmers' market offers customers a one-stop shopping experience that encourages interaction with the farmer or producer responsible for the product. The market runs from 9am to 2pm, so why not enjoy a late breakfast once

you're there, or grab some lunch after all that running around from one of the many amazing food stalls on offer. Sit under the shade of the beautiful mop top trees, or out on the lawns and listen to the Black Kites band. It'll be a great family day out; you can do all your favourite food shopping, sampling bites on offer as you go. Stock up on gifts for upcoming birthdays, or sneak in some treats to remind you of the Yarra Valley. The YVRFG farmers' market is held every third Sunday of the month from 9am to 2pm. Free entry and parking. For further information, contact the YVRFG on (03) 9739 0122 or email info@yarravalleyfood.com.au.

MARKETS

ENJOY A LITTLE MARKET SHARE BY KATH GANNAWAY IT’S very easy to hibernate in winter when all the outdoor events that got you out and about for the past few months are off the calendar ... and the sofa is extra comfy. Don’t succumb. Nobody wants to spend months with a grumpy hermit - with a vitamin D deficiency! Markets are the answer ... and there is no shortage of interesting and diverse markets around the hills and valleys. It’s not all about the spend ... although a little retail therapy can also do amazing things to lift the spirits! It’s about getting out, discovering new places, unearthing new (or old) treasures, catching up with amazing artisans and craftspeople, finding that book you’ve always wanted to read (The Old Man and the Sea?), gathering fresh produce for a hearty soup, or just ‘window’ shopping. Throughout the region there is an abundance of markets to suit every niche from farmers’ markets selling gourmet produce, to community markets where everything from knitted baby clothes and baked biscuits to fresh seedlings for the garden, bric-a-brac, and second-hand books help raise funds for local groups. Commercial-type markets are also great value and very often have a greater array of stalls, including clothing and shoes to homewares. Farmers’ Markets are becoming increasingly popular as awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle grows. The most delicious produce and fruit and veg can be had for very reasonable prices and the growers are always up for a chat and suggestions on how to cook their hand-raised produce. At some markets, buyers can get fresh, unprocessed meats, free of chemicals and preservatives.

Bulbs are another popular item at winter markets, and, again, will make for some extra colour when spring comes around.

Local farmers and growers also stand to earn top dollar for their produce without on-selling them through supermarkets.

While each market has its own character, some of the characteristics they share are breathtaking backdrops, a leisurely, welcoming atmosphere and plenty of opportunity to just browse and be inspired.

If you have the luxury of a greenhouse, now is the perfect time to snap up seedlings and grow them on for a fabulous spring display.

Pop into the local tourist information centre for details of markets happening during your visit.
