Among the delays last month included a Metro signal fault on 14 May, which left passengers stranded for up to two and a half hours. Among the upgrades being carried out are several level crossing removals and construction of the Metro Tunnel - which has been touted to slash 25 minutes from a PakenhamSt Kilda Road commute. Daniel Bowen, head of the Public Transport Users Association, said the Pakenham-Cranbourne timetable is in need of an overhaul. “The Pakenham line continues to do poorly, with crowding being an issue that contributes to delays, both at peak hour and at other times of day,” he said, “The opening of the skyrail, with removal of the busiest level crossings, provides an opportunity for authorities to revamp the timetable to boost services and cut delays and crowding.” Under current arrangements, Metro Trains offers compensation to the equivalent of two daily tickets if performance results drop below 86 per cent on-time. However, to claim the two free trips, commuters are required to fill out a two page document. “It’s quite insulting that we’re supposed to put in all this time to get the equivalent of about $8,” Ms Grey said.

Embattled Pakenham train commuters have demanded compensation from Metro and the State Government over “abysmal” results on the rail line. It comes as the Pakenham line has recorded the worst results in metropolitan Melbourne for five consecutive months, last month sinking to its lowest adherence rate since May, 2017. Approximately one-in-five services arrived more than five minutes late, with a series of bungles leaving passengers stranded for up to an hour. Lucie Grey, from Pakenham, is petitioning for commuters to be reimbursed for sluggish travel until the line’s service vastly improves. Ms Grey was prompted to take action when she missed a job interview - which she labelled a “once in a lifetime” opportunity - because travel was delayed by 50 minutes earlier in May. “They’ve asked us to be patient and we have, but enough is enough,” she said. “We understand upgrades are taking place, but they’re planned - so delays of more than 40 minutes shouldn’t be happening. “Families are impacted, children are stuck at childcare and jobs are on the line because people are getting stuck on the train network and arriving late to commitments.”

High-rises in the suburbs By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents are set to fight City of Casey plans to introduce multi-storey apartments across scores of residential streets. In an attempt to curb suburban sprawl, Casey wants higher-density neighbourhoods near activity centres and public transport. Its proposed Planning Amendment C198 will encourage townhouses, units and apartments of up to 11.5 metres (three storeys) or 13.5 metres (four storeys) in affected streets. The changes would roll-out around Endeavour Hills activity centre, Berwick Village, Timbarra Estate, Casey Central shopping centre, Autumn Place, Doveton, Eden Rise Village, Hampton Park Central, Lynbrook Village and railway station, Merinda Park railway station, Amberly Park, Fountain Gate and Springhill, Cranbourne North. Casey received a largely hostile mass of 321 public submissions, including nine petitions in Endeavour Hills, Gloucester Avenue, Berwick and Timbarra Estate, Berwick. Concerns include increased traffic and parking congestion, eroded neighbourhood character and the lack of public transport,

After submissions, Casey Council rezoned the Lyrebird Gardens section of Timbarra Estate from a maximum four storeys to three storeys. It removed streets west of Endeavour Hills
activity centre from the changes. The council will also review Gloucester Avenue, Berwick in light of "elements" of significant historic and streetscape value. However residents from parts of Timbarra Estate felt ignored, including petitioners in Samuel Close and Dylan Court. Resident Declan Foley says he'll fight the proposal for medium density housing and apartments of up to three storeys and 11.5 metres high in the serene neighbourhood. He moved into the largely single-storey area 20 years ago because of its ambience. Mr Foley says it had been unspoiled since then, and been a popular settlement for young families and retirees. The area's narrow roads and cul-de-sacs couldn't cope with extra traffic, the taller, bulkier buildings were out of character and the area was at greater risk of stormwater floods, he said. Mr Foley argues against Casey's claims that the area is within walking distance of shops and public transport. It's serviced by infrequent buses and near Parkhill Plaza's "supermarket, cafes and twodollar-shops", he says.
"There's no rhyme or reason to choosing this area." A Casey Council officer's report on the Amendment stated higher-density neighbourhoods in "conveniently located" areas would reduce car trips - and hence lower traffic and parking congestion. "Additional road infrastructure will be assessed on an as-needs basis. "Infrastructure and service investments will need to be undertaken, where required, as population increases as with all developing areas." In the meantime, the council has moved to protect Berwick's 'Hoddle Grid' from developments higher than two storeys or nine metres. It has proposed minimum 600 square-metre lots with increased garden requirements. In tabling the report on 5 June, Casey councillor Timothy Jackson said the Amendment was the largest ever undertaken by Casey. Before a packed public gallery, Cr Jackson said residents could also submit to Planning Panels Victoria - which is set to decide upon the Amendment in coming weeks. "That is another opportunity for the community to engage and provide feedback."

Narre Warren North's Terri Cater was awarded her richly-deserved OAM for her long and distinguished service to athletics. The 1976 Montreal Olympic athlete represented Australia from 1974 to 1984, which also included the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch (in which she won a silver medal in the 4x400 metre relay), and the 1982 Games in Brisbane. She's the current team coach of the Australian national under-20 sprints and middle distance runners, and has served as a mentor to the national junior under-19 squad since 2007. Mrs Cater has also served as an Athletics International committee member since 1997, including a three-year stint as secretary. Athletics International supports and assists younger and emerging athletes to achieve their full potential, in addition to helping former elite athletes to maintain a level of involvement in their sport. From 1988 to 2015, Mrs Cater also served as the head coach of the Caulfield Grammar girls' athletics team, as well as coaching both the boys' and girls' cross country teams from 2004 to 2015. She also served as the secretary of the Victorian branch of the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association for 15 years. In addition to her OAM, Mrs Cater was the recipient of a certificate of appreciation from the Glen Eira Council in 2008 and is a life member of the Oakleigh Athletic Club. 12390372-SN24-18
A Berwick woman’s notable contributions to charity, on both a local and international platform, have seen her named as a Member of the Order of Australia. (AM) Anne McGill is among the Australians being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her distinct efforts to improve society. Mrs McGill is known for her role with Rotary Inner Wheel, in which she has inspired members to raise more than $2.5 million for various community causes. She still remains active in the space, despite being a member for more than 36 years. City of Casey recognised Mrs McGill’s contributions to the community last year, awarding her the title of ‘Citizen of the Year’. The selfless Berwick resident has also volunteered more than two decades of her life for the Victorian Cancer Council. She remained humble receiving the award, thanking her colleagues, family and the community members who supported her throughout her life. “My family have been a great support they’ve backed me with everything I’ve been involved with,” she said. “It’s a bit overwhelming but I’m so very thrilled about it. “When I found out I didn’t know what to say - I’d never expected it.” Mrs McGill said one of her fondest memories was working with Meals on Wheels, providing food to those who needed it the most. “It’s very satisfying personally, being able to take meals to people who can’t afford it and don’t often have interactions,” she said.

Driver blitz By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have declared their Queen’s Birthday long weekend traffic blitz a “success” on Casey roads. In contrast to a horror local road toll in 2017, there were no fatalities or serious injuries recorded in Casey during Operation Regal on 8-11 June. However, there were 171 drivers issued with penalty notices for offences such as excessive speeding, using mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts and driving unlicenced. Seven drivers were charged with drink-driving from more than 1500 preliminary drug and alcohol tests, Senior Sergeant Hafiz Mayar, of Casey Highway Patrol, said. “The campaign aimed to reduce the incidence and severity of road trauma across Victoria and in Casey. “It was constructed to ensure all Victorians can travel safely to and from their destinations in the holiday period.” The “highly visible” police presence targeted impaired driving, excessive speed, distracted drivers and compliance with seatbelts, Sen Sgt Mayar said. It also focused on known black-spots and high-collision areas. The clear sheet comes after 10 people have died on Casey’s roads in the past 18 months. Add to that a further 17 road deaths in Greater Dandenong and Cardinia in the same period. “The success of this operation was fortunately there wasn’t any serious injuries or fatalities in Casey PSA,” Sen Sgt Mayar said. Statewide, there were more than 8500 offences - including 227 drink-drivers and 148 drug-drivers. More than 540 motorists were detected driving suspended, disqualified or unlicensed. Soberingly, five Victorians died on state roads during the long weekend.

Drivers nabbed in speed blitz In a matter of hour, police booked 24 drivers speeding on South Gippsland Freeway. Six of them were speeding at more than 125km/h, earning themselves an immediate licence suspension. A Mini Cooper detected at 150km/h was impounded. Three of the drivers tested positive to an illicit drug.
Teen struck by car A 14-year-old boy was taken to hospital in a stable condition after being struck by a car while crossing Linsell Boulevard, Cranbourne East on the morning of 12 June. The driver, a woman in her mid-30s, helped police with their enquiries.

Residents learn about the parrot and its feeding habitat on a Western Port Biosphere-organised tour on 1 June. venile birds from Tasmania to spend winter in captivity in Victoria, and then flying them back at Spring. The birds are spared the arduous migration that doomed so many of their species last year. The second strategy has been to release very young captive males into the Tasmanian saltmarshes in autumn prior to the winter migration. It is thought their early release will help them better adapt to life in the wild. As well, captive adult males were released in the Werribee wetlands sanctuary to help attract a larger flock. The idea is a larger flock will help protect birds from predators on the mainland.
The narrow strip of saltmarshes at Western Port's Ramsar-listed wetlands could also form an important feeding ground for the wild parrots. "It's a tiny strip between the sand and the ti-trees that gets flooded on king tides. "It seems to get disregarded so people tend to build on it. "That's the main food for these birds. It's important for these birds." Recently 30 residents of northern Western Port toured Moonlit Sanctuary to learn about the bird and the importance of the wetlands habitat. It was organised by the Western Port Biosphere in its efforts to promote the Ramsar site's ecological values.

Despite a thriving captive-breeding program, the orange-bellied parrot's long-term survival is still perilous. "I don't think that way," says Moonlit Sanctuary director Michael Johnson when asked of the prospects of success. His aviaries are filled with 80 of the birds part of a Tasmanian and Victorian joint effort to save the critically-endangered species. "We are just doing our best to turn it around." As far as is known, there's less than 50 of the parrots in the wild. Just 19 - including three females - returned from Victoria's coast to their only breeding spot in remote south-west Tasmania last Spring. With numbers so low, losing even a few birds is a disaster, Mr Johnson says. The parrot was much maligned when its threatened status nearly caused the scrapping of Bald Hills wind farm in Gippsland more than a decade ago. "It seems to get knocked around a little bit," Mr Johnson says. "But it's a unique species and an important one." The parrot's population is thought to have plummeted due to a loss of mainland habitat, introduced predators and disease outbreak. However, there are bright signs in the Orange Bellied Parrot Tasmanian Program designed to keep the bird alive. In the past two years, 69 chicks hatched at Moonlit - up from just three in 2015. The overall captive population at sites such as Moonlit and Healesville sanctuaries is more than 300, Mr Johnson says. It is not quite a sustainable population but it has allowed scientists to try different ways to release birds in the wild. One of those is 'ranching' - flying over ju-

South-East skills centre drives ahead High-school students will get a head-start under the bonnet with the opening of a new automotive trades facility at Lyndhurst Secondary College on 5 June. It is part of the federally-funded Cranbourne Region Trades Skills Centre - a joint venture between the college, Cranbourne Secondary College, Alkira Secondary College and Marnebek School. It’s the last stop for a much-loved miniature railway in Narre Warren North. Campbelltown Passenger Railway, with its beautifully maintained locomotives, station, signal box, workshop and tracks, comes to a close on Sunday 24 June. Since 1984, an indomitable couple Colin and Nanc Campbell, both 89, have opened on Sundays and public holidays. They’ve hosted thousands of families, picnickers and kids’ birthday parties - and never had a holiday for themselves since, they say. “I’ll miss it,” says Mr Campbell. “I still like running the trains. It’s doing all the work around the place which is the killer.” The Campbells used to have up to eight helpers, including civil engineers. But with that support departed, it became impossible to go on. It takes many days to mow the vast lawns, let alone picking up rubbish and branches and maintaining the property. “As time passed on, our skilled helpers like us got older,” Mr Campbell says. “We managed for as long as we could.” Ms Campbell adds that “no one has any idea how much work it takes”. “They think we just drive the train around on Sunday.” The couple built the attraction from scratch on a bare 20-acre property in 1978. It took six years of construction and earthmoving - not to mention the planting of 5800 trees - before it was opened to the public. The paddocks have since blossomed into idyllic gardens and woods, rock cuttings and a lake. A sign-writer by trade, Mr Campbell’s handiwork is seen in the neat, hand-painted signage throughout the grounds. He retired from

A convicted drug trafficker's bid to be bailed to a country rehab centre has been rejected under the state's toughened bail laws. Dylan James Kelly, 32, had been remanded on multiple firearm, car theft and drug charges when he fronted Dandenong Magistrates' Court via video link on 4 June. His defence lawyer told the court that Kelly had been accepted by the 24/7 supervised Arrow Health centre in Woodend. It was the accused's "last chance" to address his "deep-seeded" drug problems. "It's make-or-break for him." To make bail, Kelly had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' - the state's toughest test for bail which is also reserved for accused murderers. He was charged with 17 offences including trafficking 'ice' after being arrested in a hire car in Jones Street Dandenong at 1.30am on 30 March, police officer Constable Jordan McKenzie told the court. Police allegedly seized a bag of eight grams of suspected meth from Kelly's underwear as well as $6,054 from his bag. A bag of suspected ice was allegedly carried by the female driver. Police further searched the car and the pair's hired room at Quest Apartments Dandenong. Police allegedly seized more than 60 items including a Tazer, butterfly knife, knuckledusters, a firearm cleaning kit, ammunition, six mobile phones and an alleged drug 'tick-list' written on the back of a character-reference
letter for court. Kelly denied the allegations in a largely 'nocomment' police interview, the court was told. At the time, Kelly was on bail over allegedly unlicensed driving, and possessing ice and proceeds of crime - namely $4050 cash - in a stolen Jeep Cherokee in Berwick in September, the court heard. He was also on bail over an incident in which he was a passenger in an alleged stolen vehicle in which a sawn-off shotgun, a rifle, $2645 and a drug tick-list were allegedly found in January. Kelly was subject to two community corrections orders at the time - including a County Court-imposed CCO for trafficking 'ice' and firearm offences. The court heard that Kelly could not be compelled from walking away from the rehab centre. Arrow Health patient-care coordinator Bruce Laidlaw said the centre would advise lawyers, family and police if Kelly left the CCTV and alarm-secured facility. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen indicated Kelly was likely to be jailed if found guilty of the charges, including re-sentencing for the allegedly breached CCOs. He noted the "significant" criminal history over more than a decade, including breaches of bail and a suspended sentence. "Despite what has been put on his behalf, the circumstances aren't exceptional and I'll be refusing his application for bail." Kelly was remanded to appear via video link for a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 12 June.

Facebook, Instagram or Twitter is an essential marketing tool - but don't put all your eggs in the social media basket, a communications lecturer told a Narre Warren Business Group meeting on 6 June. Jessica Humphreys, of the PR firm SocialConcepts, advised business owners not to shut down their websites and email marketing in favour of a Facebook page. The recent shift in Instagram's algorithm hit some businesses hard. "What if Facebook shut down overnight?" Ms Humphreys said.

Social media was relevant for "99 per cent" of businesses but not in isolation. "You often hear print is dead," Ms Humphreys said. "I don't believe that. I think both digital and print have a role to play." Aside from advertising dollars, a properlyrun Facebook page still cost plenty of time and effort to "cut through the clutter", Ms Humphreys said. It takes effort to reach people on Facebook when more and more businesses are jumping online. You also have to be prepared to keep trying different promos - and give the customers what they want to see. "As to what works, there isn't a right or wrong way. It does change, that's why it's so complex. "All the social media experts tell you different things. "I don't call myself an expert ... how can you be expert in something that has just been around for 10 years? "It's new and it's still evolving." That said, Ms Humphreys was a fan of 'Boost Posts' to help boost page likes, video ads to boost brand awareness and using your email list to target your customers on Facebook. The Facebook Insights tool revealed what posts were working and who was watching them. Its' a "bit creepy" but the ads posted onto your personal Facebook page reveal something about yourself, she said.
High-capacity trains steam ahead

Work has started on the fleet of high-capacity trains for the Pakenham and Cranbourne metro rail lines. The 65 trains are being built and assembled at a manufacturing facility in Newport from 13 June. They are expected to be ready for testing by the end of the year, and in service from mid2019. The trains are being built to 60 per cent local content, including key electrical components and pantographs made in Hallam. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the project set up Victoria for a long-term future in building rolling-stock.

PETS MAY BE FORCING INVESTORS OUT By Rebecca Skilton THE Victorian Government’s proposed rental reforms making it easier for tennants to keep pets could push up rents and see investors leave the market, according to a local property manager. If passed, the new laws would give tenants the right to keep pets provided they obtain the landlord’s written consent first. Landlords will not be able to unreasonably refuse a request for consent, and in the case of an assistance dog, consent cannot be refused at all. Guidance will be issued to help landlords and tenants understand the types of situations where it may be reasonable to refuse consent. The policy is part of the Victorian Government’s yet-to-be-seen rental reforms and would be the first of its kind in Australia. High profile vet Chris Brown has thrown his support behind the proposed changes. “It’s all about not banning pets by default and currently all across the country that is the situation,“ Mr Brown said. “This legislation aims to even the pet playing field.“ Peake Real Estate property manager Cindy Huntington said the new laws could potentially alter the rental market. “The policy itself hasn’t been reviewed for 20 years,” Ms Huntington said. “The last time (it was revised) was in 1997, so it’s probably needed for all parties concerned. “We haven’t been notified of the changes, but we are led to believe the landlord can no longer reasonably withhold permission for the tenant to have a pet.“ Ms Huntington said she had already noticed a increase in investors getting out of the market.
Under the Victorian government's proposed rental reforms, landlords will not be able to unreasonably withhold permission for a tenant to have a pet.
“We have noticed that there has been an increase in selling within the last six monthswhich I believe is for a couple of reasons including that the market’s good, but it also might be because (home-owners) may be frightened or scared of the changes and they’re selling now. “So in the long term, if owners feel they’re losing less control over their asset, they will be selling which would push rental prices up. “So it could really have a negative
outcome for both parties.” Rent Fair Victoria states that the reforms will make it easier for Victorian tenants and landlords to understand their respective rights and obligations when it comes to allowing, and keeping, pets in rented premises. Rent Fair Victoria explained that an outgoing tenant will be required to undertake cleaning and fumigation if there is petrelated damage to the property that goes
beyond fair wear and tear. This is consistent with their existing duty not to damage the property and to leave it in a reasonably clean condition. The reforms to the Residential Tenancies Act will be introduced into the Victorian Parliament in 2018, and if passed, these reforms would be implemented in 2019. CENTRE PASS FOR TIMBERTOP TIMBERTOP residents are getting fit, having fun and getting to know their neighbours thanks to the estate's new netball team. The idea for the netball team came from a Timbertop resident who approached Community Development Officer Tammy Radford after taking part in a free yoga class hosted by estate developer Parklea. "The residents loved this opportunity to attend a yoga class within their estate and they loved meeting their neighbours," Ms Radford explained. "As a result, one of the residents asked if I would consider looking at putting together
a mixed netball team." A Facebook shout out soon had enough interested players to register a team with the Pakenham Netball League. The Timbertop Netball Team plays in a mixed competition on Wednesday nights at Cardinia Life. "The great thing was that except for one married couple, not one single person knew each other, so again it was an opportunity for residents to meet and connect and make new friends," Ms Radford said. Timbertop resident Sally Groeneveld said she was enjoying playing netball again for
the first time in 20 years. "Thank you to Tammy and Parklea for supporting the initiative to form a Timbertop mixed netball team," Sally said. "For some of us it has been 20 years since playing and so far we are all having such a great time playing, forming new neighbourhood friendships and overall loving the workout." Parklea pays the team fees and weekly player fees, while building firm Orlara Homes has supplied the team polo shirts. General manager Brad Davidson said as a locally owned and operated company, Orlara
Homes was keen to support community development. "We employ local staff and think it's important to support community events and sporting teams," Mr Davidson said. "We have been around for 43 years and we want to see the community thrive." Cardinia Life has also extended a charitable hand, offering to host a collection bin to support Parklea's upcoming winter food drive. No matter the score on the board, the Timbertop Netball Team has been a win for residents in more ways than one. ●

The first ever 'Chloe Clash' will be held at the Casey Basketball Stadium from 12pm on Friday, 6 July to 12pm Saturday, 7 July, all with the aim of raising funds for The Royal Children's Hospital. Chloe Myors, 11 at the time, collapsed in her classroom at Hillsmeade Primary School on 14 May 2012, and passed away the next day after being airlifted to The Royal Children's Hospital. Chloe died from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain, which is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins. Chloe was one of 11 children under the age of 16 across Australasia to donate her organs in 2012, subsequently changing the lives of five children, their families and their communities. Always a keen netballer playing at both domestic and representative levels, the idea came after Chloe's father Ian and her younger brother Ben attended an Annual Memorial Day at the Royal Children's Hospital, remembering children who have passed away at the hospital. "Through Chloe's love of netball and Ben's love of basketball, the idea of playing a combined game of netball/basketball was formed,"
Ian said. "Ben then contacted one of Chloe's best friends, Shaylee Hearn, and they trialled the game with a group of friends last September. It was a success." "At the start of 2018 we decided to move forward with Ben's game and we formed 'The Chloe Clash' with the aim of raising money for The Royal Children's Hospital." Ian said that without the help of sponsors and the community, it wouldn't be possible to go ahead with the idea, and urges everyone to get behind what will be a special day. "We would like to thank our sponsors, Total Force Maintenance, Casey Basketball Stadium, Icon Sports and the former Chloe Foundation, who without their help this event would still only be an idea," he said. The Chloe Foundation - which was formed by the family in 2014 - aimed to support families that have lost donor children, raising awareness and financial support, but is no longer in operation. "All donations need to go directly though our Everyday Hero link to The Royal Children's Hospital. Everyone is welcome to come and watch on the day with a gold coin donation entry," Ian said. By Cam Lucadou-Wells Clyde North artist Helen Anderson is drawn to the vivid colours in Australia's landscape. She and other Berwick Artists Society members will be showcasing their works as part of a Winter Arts exhibition this month. Ms Anderson has chosen two vibrant, impressionist works - an oil painting of water lilies and an acrylic of irises. Her favourite themes are gardens and the Australian outback. Growing up in Mildura, she has always loved the outback's red dirt and wildflowers. It is a stark contrast to the muted tones of the European masters. "I hadn't realised how different the colours are to Europe - the Australian colours are a lot brighter. "Now I understand why the artists overseas painted the way they did." Ms Anderson had put aside her passion for painting after a Year 12 teacher told her she had no talent. She revived her art 20 years ago as a relief from her stressful social-work job at a Sydney half-way house. A picture framer praised her silk paintings, telling her that she could put them up for sale. Ms Anderson has since sold hundreds of works. She is part of the popular Berwick Artists Society, which has been running the past 26 years. Members socialise and paint together on Thursdays at the Old Cheese Factory.

The free Winters Arts exhibition will have society members on hand to speak with visitors. Most paintings will be for sale. The exhibition runs from June 16-28 at Bunjil Place Library. Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly expe-
rienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. And as Ocaa explains, it's one certain aspect that helps him excel, and one that he feels will propel him to take the next step. "I play that wing role, because I'm fit and
fast - my biggest strength is the outside run and use of the footy, which comes with my fitness," he said. "Early years of primary school, I won a lot of cross country, so it's always been like that for me - it's not really genetic or anything, I've learnt it." So what's driving the youngster for the rest of the 2018 season? "I'd like to play as many Stingrays games as possible, and I'd love to win the flag for Pakenham," he said. One thing is for certain, Jafar Ocaa is a player worth keeping an eye on in coming years.

On the weekends you're likely to see Jafar Ocaa streaming down the wings of Toomuc Reserve or Shepley Oval with defenders desperately trying to chase him down. The 18-year-old Pakenham student is certainly an exciting prospect, and his deeds on the football field are beginning to take notice. In Round 8 of the TAC Cup season on Sunday 3 June, Ocaa made his debut for the Dandenong Stingrays, helping them to a 78-point win over Sandringham Dragons at home. While he admits he struggled at times with the tempo during his performance in which he snared a final term goal, he loved the experience. "It was really, really exciting - the level was pretty good, I think it was harder than I thought it would be, but it's similar to seniors, so all good," he said. "Early on, I struggled with the structures a little bit, but yeah it got better as the game went on." Ocaa hasn't been involved with the TAC Cup program very long, but feels he has earnt his place after a strong pre-season. "I came last year, and I reckon I handled it pretty well, I was already fit going into the preseason so it got easier for me," he said. The youngster came to Australia in 2007 from South Sudan, and has quickly bought into the game of football after being invited down by friends. "I came from South Sudan at the age of seven, I lived in Hampton Park and now Pakenham," he said. "I started in Under 14's where my friends introduced me to the footy at Pakenham - it wasn't that hard for me to play, I was involved
Winning a bronze medal at such a young age is an experience remembered forever. For Alisha Devine, all of her hard work is starting to pay dividends in her pursuit to one day play at the very highest level she can, and her recent medal is testament to that. But the 13-year-old Pakenham Pumas player and St Francis Xavier College student did something so rare in the 2018 Australian Intermediate League Championships in Lismore from 20 May to 25 May for the Southern Mariners; she was the only female in the team, and one of only four in the entire tournament. In fact, she was just the second ever female to be invited to represent the Southern Mariners. As humble as they come, the youngster said it was a great experience to get some success in representative sport, and said despite being the only female, she fitted in extremely well. "It was my first tournament away from Victoria, so it was really exciting, and it was really good fun," she said. "I've made some great friends along the
way which is really good as well." Alisha plays her home baseball with the Under 14's Pakenham Pumas, and is loving her time while learning a lot about the game at the same time. "Baseball's a lot of fun - I play pitcher, first base and third base, so you need to have a strong arm and coordination," she said. "It's a lot of fun, the team's good fun to play with - Gregg Clutterbuck is my coach and he's really good. I've always been surrounded by really good people across the journey so far. "I think my sister (Emily) has been one of my main mentors so far, she's been fantastic." While still a developing talent, Alisha trains and plays up to four days a week, requiring a lot of commitment. "I'd like to try out and hopefully play for the Women's Victorian team, I just need to keep training and work hard to get there," she said. And she has a message for anyone interested in giving baseball a go. "Baseball's for everyone, it's just a great social sport - it's great to see the smiles on all the faces as they continue to improve," she said. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Junior Warriors make it By Hayley Wildes The Pakenham Warriors had a point to prove. At the National Junior Classic (NJC) over the long weekend, Pakenham's under-14 boy's squad proved that they belong and can more than hold their own against the top teams in the nation. As Pakenham's first ever representatives at the NJC, the team had already achieved history, but they wanted more. In their first game, playing against Blacktown West, the boys from Pakenham grew in confidence as the game went on and took over in the second half to secure their maiden NJC win, 76-54. Coach Brett Small talked about the importance of getting off to a good start. "In the first quarter we just sort of stuck around and held firm with what we were doing," he said. "Once we got more comfortable with the game and tempo, we were really able to apply some pressure and shut them down offensively which really set us up I think." Over the three days at Dandenong Stadium,
the Warriors went 3-3 and finished sixth (fourth in Victoria) out of 16 teams in the age-group a fantastic achievement that speaks volumes about the Pakenham Warriors program. "We know that if we bring our best game, we can compete with anyone," Small said. To achieve such a great result requires contributions from every player and that's exactly what Small got from his team. Every player scored valuable points, put their body on the line and the team comradery was evident. Lachlan Currie and Kobe Wilson were sublime all weekend as they kept the scoreboard ticking over, while Kynan Auhl and Lachlan Smith had a huge impact on all games. Small talked about what Currie brings to the court each and every game. "Lachie's a great kid and we bring him off the bench to bring energy and aggressiveness," he said. "He gives us another element and when we rotate into our line-up, he creates a lot of scoring opportunities for us and he's a real key to what we're doing."
Perhaps the highlight of the tournament for Pakenham was the thrilling finish against Warrnambool. With it all on the line and the game tied at 48 with just seconds remaining, Tyson Masinovic wanted nothing to do with overtime. Masinovic drained a massive three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to put his team up by three and the Warriors held on for a memorable 51-48 win. The support for the team was second to none as the Warrior faithful turned out in their droves. "We really noticed and appreciated the support that was given by our club. As a group it was just great to have the noise and the support there," Small said. With the belief that they can match it with the best in the nation, the Warriors now turn their attention to the championship phase of the Victorian Junior Basketball League - which sees the top 10 teams face off for the trophy. If their recent form is anything to go by, the Warriors will be a tough team to defeat at the business end.

Power and Rays set the pace at the head of the pack By Hayley Wildes At the mid-point of the season, it's fair to say things couldn't be going much better for the region's two local TAC Cup teams. The Dandenong Stingrays (7-1) are playing absolutely sublime team football, while the Gippsland Power (6-1-1) continue to face challenges head on and simply refuse to give in. The Stingrays boast an enormous amount of top-end talent - evident by their 12 selections in the Vic Country squad - but it is their overall
depth and willingness to do the job by committee that is catapulting them to new heights. Bailey Williams, Mitch Riordan and Riley Bowman are all possible 2018 first round draft picks, while the likes of Zac Foot, Bailey Schmidt, Corey Ellison, Jai Taylor and William Hamill have performed brilliantly throughout the first half of the season. The Gippsland Power has been consistent this season - their lone loss came against the Stingrays in late March, while they also fought out a draw against the Northern Knights.
Captain Xavier Duursma is shaping as a possible first round draft selection as his signature work rate and hard-nosed game style stands out. Sam Flanders has been a constant threat up forward for the Power and has scored the second most goals in the competition with 16 majors. The excitement machine that is Irving Mosquito continues to prove his worth at TAC Cup level and his ability to find the goals and make something out of nothing would have AFL teams taking a serious look at him. Nar Nar Goon's Bailey Beck is putting to-
gether a fine season on the wing, while Matthew McGannon and Kyle Reid continue to go from strength to strength. TAC Cup action returns this weekend, with both teams facing real tests. The Stingrays will be looking for a bit of revenge when they face the Oakleigh Chargers the only team to have beaten them this season - on Saturday afternoon at Shepley Oval. Meanwhile, the Power will be looking to take care of business against the Calder Cannons at home on Sunday afternoon.
Lions vote in favour of an AFL Greater East switch By Nick Creely Now that the talk is over, Pakenham football president Darren Sidebottom is looking forward to the Lions' future as part of the proposed 'AFL Greater East'. At the Special General Meeting (SGM) on 6 June, the members of both the Pakenham Football Club and Pakenham Lions Netball Club voted to accept the invitation from AFL Yarra Ranges to join them for divisional football in 2019. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
It comes as a relief for Sidebottom, who said the club can now plan for it's future. "Now we know where we're heading next year, and it's exciting for us moving forward, we can now start signing coaches and players," he told the Gazette. "It just means we're not in limbo, we know where we're going." While it was a long process, which involved the possibility of joining the Gippsland League, Sidebottom said the club did its due diligence and is confident they've made the right call.
"There was close to probably 100 hours of work done on this, people making phone calls, meetings with other leagues - we spoke to Eastern, AFL Gippsland about West Gippsland and Gippsland, and we decided we wanted to keep our football and netball together," he said. "That and travel, Gippsland has netball too, but it came down to the point where no one wanted to travel two and a half hours down to Bairnsdale." Sidebottom was full of praise for how the
divisional structure will work, and hopes it will help struggling clubs get the chance to rebuild. "The divisional structure is the most important aspect of it, and that's what we're after - it gives clubs that are struggling the chance to go down for a few years and build up and head back," he said. "That's what all the clubs have been crying out for, and they've offered it - AFL Greater East's proposal has been fantastic."
