His life for others Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Trafficker bail fail A convicted drug trafficker's bid to be bailed to a country rehab centre has been rejected under the state's toughened bail laws. Dylan James Kelly, 32, had been remanded on multiple firearm, car theft and drug charges when he fronted Dandenong Magistrates' Court via video link on 4 June. His defence lawyer told the court that Kelly had been accepted by the 24/7 supervised Arrow Health centre in Woodend. It was the accused's "last chance" to address his "deep-seeded" drug problems. "It's make-or-break for him." To make bail, Kelly had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' - the state's toughest test for bail which is also reserved for accused murderers. He was charged with 17 offences including trafficking 'ice' after being arrested in a hire car in Jones Street Dandenong at 1.30am on 30 March, police officer Constable Jordan McKenzie told the court.

Police allegedly seized a bag of eight grams of suspected meth from Kelly's underwear as well as $6,054 from his bag. A bag of suspected ice was allegedly carried by the female driver. Police further searched the car and the pair's hired room at Quest Apartments Dandenong. Police allegedly seized more than 60 items including a Tazer, butterfly knife, knuckledusters, a firearm cleaning kit, ammunition, six mobile phones and an alleged drug 'tick-list' written on the back of a character-reference letter for court. Kelly denied the allegations in a largely 'nocomment' police interview, the court was told. At the time, Kelly was on bail over allegedly unlicensed driving, and possessing ice and proceeds of crime - namely $4050 cash - in a stolen Jeep Cherokee in Berwick in September, the court heard. He was also on bail over an incident in which he was a passenger in an alleged stolen vehicle in which a sawn-off shotgun, a rifle, $2645 and a drug tick-list were allegedly found in January.

Kelly was subject to two community corrections orders at the time - including a County Court-imposed CCO for trafficking 'ice' and firearm offences. The court heard that Kelly could not be compelled from walking away from the rehab centre. Arrow Health patient-care coordinator Bruce Laidlaw said the centre would advise lawyers, family and police if Kelly left the CCTV and alarm-secured facility. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen indicated Kelly was likely to be jailed if found guilty of the charges, including re-sentencing for the allegedly breached CCOs. He noted the "significant" criminal history over more than a decade, including breaches of bail and a suspended sentence. "Despite what has been put on his behalf, the circumstances aren't exceptional and I'll be refusing his application for bail." Kelly was remanded to appear via video link for a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 12 June.

Cop car crush A power pole fell onto a police car during a chase in Dandenong South. State Highway Patrol officers were using laser speed detectors on the Pound Road overpass about 11.15am on Wednesday 6 June. They allegedly detected a white Holden Commodore speeding north along the South Gippsland Freeway. A second highway patrol vehicle tried to intercept the sedan as it exited the South Gippsland Highway onto the Princess Highway. The driver mounted the centre median strip and the vehicle then clipped a power pole, which fell onto a police car's bonnet and a Volkswagen Tiguan's roof. The senior constable and constable in the police car and the Volkswagen driver, a man in his mid-seventies, were not injured. The Holden turned right into Doveton Avenue before four youths dumped the car in Gumbuya Close, Eumemmerring, and fled. Police were making inquiries in relation to the Holden. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams revealed further details on Monday 4 June. She said Dandenong passengers would have access to trains every 10 minutes until 10pm. There'll be 10 new weekly services on the Cranbourne line, and 45 existing shuttle services will extend to Flinders Street to reduce the need to change trains. Pakenham line passengers will have access to five extra services a week, extended from Dandenong in the evenings.

"This new timetable will give passengers more options on some of our busiest train lines while we get on with building the Metro Tunnel, which will free up space to run even more services on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines," Ms Williams said. Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after officers fired a shot at a vehicle in Dandenong. The incident followed a theft at a liquor store in Dandenong North involving two men and a woman. Investigators said the trio entered the Dunearn Road store just after 4.30pm on Wednesday 6 June and stole liquor. Shortly after, they allegedly tried to re-enter the store brandishing a knife and hammer. The store keeper locked the door. An altercation ensued, during which the store window was damaged. The alleged offenders then assaulted a neighbouring shop keeper and fled in a stolen Nissan Pulsar. Police spotted the sedan parked in a service lane on the Princes Highway, Dandenong, just south of David Street, about 7.15pm. Officers approached the vehicle, but the driver reversed, collided into two parked vehicles and accelerated towards police. An officer fired one shot at the vehicle before the driver fled onto Gwenda Street. The unoccupied Nissan was found dumped in Gwenda Street a short time later. Police believe the Nissan was stolen from Clow Street, Dandenong, sometime between Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 June. Police arrested an 18-year-old Heatherton man at Dandenong Railway Station about 8.30pm and charged him with theft and motor vehicle theft. He was bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 August. Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation as per standard protocol when a member has discharged a firearm. No police members were injured during the incident and Greater Dandenong CIU detectives continue to search for the man and woman.

Search follows body discovery

Train boost is on track for Dandenong A new train timetable will bring 60 new and extended services to Dandenong Railway Station. There'll also be 65 new and extended services for Westall passengers when the timetable rolls out later this year. Passengers between Dandenong and the city will have access to an extra 45 services extended from Cranbourne each week. As reported in the Journal, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan first flagged the service boost on 27 April.

Police searched a Hallam street for clues following a man's death in Lynbrook. They conducted a line search on Saffron Drive with local SES volunteers on the morning of Thursday 7 June. A police spokeswoman said a man's body was found in Rowcroft Avenue, Lynbrook, on Tuesday 5 June. She said the exact circumstances surrounding his death were yet to be established, but the death was not being treated as suspicious at this stage. The investigation is ongoing.

Girl hides from home invader with a knife A 10-year-old girl kept calm and called for help when an armed man broke into her home. She was alone in the Buckingham Avenue house when he smashed a window to force entry about 5.30pm on Thursday 31 May. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said her family members were away for just a few minutes to pick up dinner. The girl locked herself in a bedroom, called triple-zero and stayed on the phone with the call-taker until police arrived. They arrested a 46-year-old Springvale man, who was allegedly in possession of a knife and screwdriver.

Cash to help fight the harm of pokies By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong Council will tip $75,000 into tackling problem gambling. At their Monday 28 May meeting, councillors agreed to the three-year funding plan for the Alliance for Gambling Reform. The municipality has the highest rate of gambling losses in Victoria, dropping $118 million on pokies in 2016-'17. Only Cr Tim Dark opposed the move. He said pokies venues in Greater Dandenong provided critical support for local sporting and social groups "which is money that council then does not have to put in to support these clubs". "We should be going back to basics, helping the residents who have a problem with gambling rather than this organisation," he said. Cr Sean O'Reilly said not only should the

council support the alliance. "We should be the number one ticket holder given the wreckage to family budgets that problem gambling enacts on families all around Greater Dandenong," he said. "The main thrust of the alliance is about harm minimisation. "A few decades ago you didn't have to wear a seatbelt when you drove. "It's to protect people from themselves so they can still use them for entertainment purposes. "There's really no speed limit on how much the money can go from their pocket into the machine and away from their family budget." The council granted $25,000 per year to the alliance in 2016 and 2017 to help broaden its staff base and strengthen its campaigns. A council report on the proposal for fund-

ing until 30 June 2021 said the 26-member alliance "has proven itself to be responsive and effective organisation for advocating for gambling reform" since its formation in 2015. "Recognising that such reforms hold the prospect of significantly easing the burden of gambling in this community, council has been an active and financial supporter of the alliance," it said. Cr Matthew Kirwan said the council committed in February to a local advocacy campaign for the upcoming State Election "and the alliance has been giving advice and support as part of that". "Specifically they have helped develop brochures as well as posters and pull-up banners for distribution and display across the community," he said. "The alliance also supported and provided speakers for our community forum in March."

Thieves broke into an underground car park in a Dandenong apartment building. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said they entered the Close Avenue site about 2.30pm on Saturday 24 April and accessed secured storage containers. Nothing was stolen. The first man was Caucasian, about 172 centimetres tall, aged in his thirties and unshaven with short brown hair, dark-coloured pants and shoes, and a dark-coloured collared shirt with short sleeves and light-coloured stripes. He was carrying a dark-coloured bag across his body. The second was Caucasian, about 170cm tall and 18 years old with brown hair, a grey Adidas hoodie with a large logo on the front, and dark-coloured pants, shoes and hat. Noble Park road closure Heatherton Road will close so workers can remove railway tracks. VicRoads issued an alert to motorists about ongoing works around the new Noble Park Railway Station precinct, which will include asphalting the road surface. Heatherton Road will be closed at the train line in both directions from 6am on Wednesday 6 June until Monday 18 June. Signed detours will be in place along Corrigan, Chandler, Kelvinside and Lightwood roads and Douglas Street. VicRoads said delays were expected and advised motorists to avoid the area if possible. A South-East speeding blitz nabbed 24 drivers. State Highway Patrol South East members set up on the Pound Road bridge over the South Gippsland Freeway in Hampton Park for three and a half hours on Wednesday 6 June. In the 100 kilometre an hour speed zone they detected 18 drivers travelling between 10 and 15 km/h over the limit. Officers detected six people travelling at more than 125km/h and issued them with an

infringement notice that carried a licence suspension. They allegedly caught a 33-year-old Prahran man driving a Mini Cooper at 150 km/h and impounded the vehicle. The driver is expected to be charged on summons and was issued with a $983 impound notice. Three of the speeding drivers also tested positive to an illicit drug and one had a suspended driverâ€™s licence.

13 June 1968 Furore over 'Shanty Town' Some property owners in the Chandler RoadCheltenham Road area of Dandenong say they will have to quit their homes and sell out at a loss because "shanty-type" second-hand houses are being brought into the district. A petition protesting against the houses was signed by 47 people and lodged with Dandenong Council on Tuesday night. Council later gave permission for two houses from Glen Waverly to be reinstated on blocks in Thurbro Drive and Chandler Road.

Wonderful work of YMCA Captain Ernest Walker is with the 5th Australian Division Reinforcements Wing of the AIF in France, and in a letter which he wishes to have published, he says: "I would like to make a few first-hand remarks on the work of the YMCA huts at the front. "All I can say is that they are doing the most wonderful work which is appreciated by every soldier. "Wherever you go, even right up under fire, you will find a YMCA hut or shelter, or tent, or dug out, where you can get a hot cup of tea, coffee, cocoa, biscuits. "I have never yet been in a village or town or on a section of the front where there was not a YMCA."

The warm weather caused bud burst to occur early, with many growers harvesting two weeks earlier than usual... "The quality and quantity of this season has been the best of the eight vintages we have made," Mr Dillon (Bindi Winery in Gisborne) said.

5 years ago 10 June 2013 Commuter stands up for woman 'racially abused' by trio A regular commuter took a stand against three men allegedly racially abusing a woman at Dandenong Railway Station last week.

Kait O'Callahan said that while she was waiting for a train home she was shocked to witness a Maori woman in her twenties told to "go back to your country" by the men about 4.30pm on 29 May. They also hurled abuse "in slurred voices" involving sheep, taxes and Kiwis. She said the woman retaliated with insults while bystanders stared in silence. Ms O'Callahan, not wanting to be "someone who didn't do anything", decided to console the upset women rather than enter "blindly into a confrontation" with the men. Two teenage boys then joined her in support. "Three people was all it took for the men to realise she was not alone. They soon backed off," Ms O'Callahan wrote in a statement to the Journal.

Jan a voice of the people What's In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city's best-known street and location names. This week the Journal looks at Jan Wilson Community Centre in Noble Park North. Jan Wilson was a Dandenong North MP and Dandenong councillor who advocated to improve animal welfare practices across the state. Mrs Wilson migrated to Australia from Scotland in the early 1960s and in 1977 became the second woman to be elected to the City of Dandenong. She represented the North Ward until 1986, and in 1985 was elected the first member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the new seat of Dandenong North. Her time in State Parliament included the racing, local government, aged care and consumer affairs portfolios.

NAME Following her retirement from politics in 1999, Mrs Wilson was appointed to the board of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and shortly afterwards became chairwoman. GRV started reforming its animal welfare practices during her time as chairwoman and established the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) to rehome greyhounds that were unable to race. Her 10 years of leadership also resulted in

In 2009, Mrs Wilson was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to the racing industry and to animal welfare. She died on 5 March 2010. World game A family festival will celebrate soccer in Dandenong. Harmony Square will welcome the world game from noon to 9.30pm on Saturday 16 June. Visitors can show their support for the Team 11 bid to bring the A-League and W-League to Greater Dandenong. They can watch local soccer teams put on a show across the day then settle in to watch a live broadcast of the Socceroos versus France World Cup game on the big screen from 8pm. The day's competition will kick off with boys and girls under-15s teams. Eight teams representing the City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health, Victoria Police, the CFA and Street Soccer will then compete for the Community Cup. Hesitant, white-knuckled, you see their little fear-filled faces peering out from the windscreen of mum’s huge urban assault vehicle. And, let’s be honest, sometimes the driving performance is not so sure-footed. So let’s all make sure we’re careful out there. You don’t have to look too far to see people abusing the poor old learners there’s a whole lot of honking going on. And yes, the instructors have a big role to play here. After having thoroughly read their preparatory material from VicRoads, they have to be a sensible mentor. That means taking great care in relation to selecting where the lessons are to be conducted. And if the family has a second, smaller, more manageable vehicle compared to mum’s tank, then that’s not a bad idea either. Introduce them gently to the dark, the rain, and the busier roads. With our high migrant population, learning to drive in Dandenong can be a challenging space for many youngsters - so don’t hesitate to push a bit further afield. But the main issue for most of us, is to show these learners the same tolerance and understanding as we were given back in the day. Yes, they can be a little unpredictable. Yes, they can be slow and shaky. But yes, they are good young people and yes, it’s hard not to like them. If you do perform just one act of kindness this week, give an L-Plater a break ... and hopefully they’ll pay it forward to the next generation of yellow perils. - Jason Beck

Painting of vision By Casey Neill A colourful mural is bringing students together at a Dandenong school. Eleven Emerson School students designed and painted the artwork and officially unveiled the finished product on Wednesday 6 June. Senior VCAL arts class teacher Jacqueline Malanga said the subject was new to the school so they wanted to offer the students something special.

"The kids decided on the mural and the theme. The theme was 'what brings us together'," she said. "We did a brainstorm. We thought of all the different ways that people come together. "We came up with sport and music and art, family, animals bring us together, transportation brings us together. "We have a school program, houses. Houses brings us together to do activities." Ms Malanga said it took three months to

come up with different designs incorporating these ideas. "The kids went from an A3 sized paper to a seven-metre mural," she said. "They had to scale up quite a bit, so there was a lot of math involved. "The painting itself took 39 hours. "It was really a big learning experience because we were able to see something through to the very end and to set a goal and a target and to meet it." 1208862-EG48-15

Fake bomber lands in jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who wielded a fake bomb in front of more than 200 terrified passengers and crew aboard a commercial airplane just after takeoff from Melbourne Airport has been jailed for up to 12 years. Manodh Monaragala Marks had pleaded guilty to attempting to take control of an aircraft - believed to be the first example of a charge for this offence in Australia, County Court of Victoria judge Michael McInerney noted during sentencing on 7 June. Marks, a 26-year-old Sri Lankan student who was living in Dandenong, was acting under a severe ice-induced psychosis at the time

of the offence, Mr McInerney said. On 31 May 2017, he had taken methamphetamine sometime between just being discharged from a psychiatric facility and boarding a Malaysian Airlines flight that night. Marks unveilled what appeared to be a “very life-like” bomb but was in fact a speaker and a portable power-bank, both with flashing blue lights. He ran to the galley door leading to the pilot’s cabin, announcing he had a bomb and wanted to destroy the plane. A passenger stated Marks’s finger hovered over the power button of his device. “I’m going to blow the f***ing plane up,” Marks allegedly told him.

The timing could not have been more critical - the plane had ascended to 4000 feet in the early “sterile period” of the flight. There were 222 passengers and crew aboard. A mayday message was conveyed to the pilot, who turned the plane around and landed it back at the airport within 15 minutes. Meanwhile cabin crew and passengers overpowered Marks and restrained him with hand ties. After landing, passengers were distressed at remaining on the plane with Marks and the device for a further hour and 20 minutes. It took 40 minutes for security forces to reach the plane. According to Marks, he had heard screaming voices due to his psychosis. He believed the

plane was going to crash and wanted it turn back to Melbourne. Mr McInerney noted that Marks had achieved his wish. It was not an act of terrorism or greed, nor was there sufficient evidence of pre-planning, the judge said. However Marks had fallen under powerful delusions due to his own actions. He must have known the impact of using ice before boarding the plane, the judge said. Marks was jailed for up to 12 years, with a minimum non-parole period of nine years. He was to be deported to his homeland upon completing his term.

In November last year, the Journal revealed that Greater Dandenong Councillor Heang Tak would run for the seat of Clarinda for the Labor Party in the next state election. That's now only a few months away, so the Journal started to wonder who would take his place on council if he was successful. It's likely he will be. Retiring Labor incumbent Hong Lim received a resounding 53.27 per cent of first preference votes. Cr Tim Dark ousted long-standing Paperbark Ward representative Peter Brown at the last council election. It seemed obvious that Mr Brown would step into Cr Tak's shoes as there were only a few votes separating he and Cr Dark at the end of the count. But rather than turning to the first runnerup, a Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) spokeswoman said the vacating councillor's votes would be distributed to the remaining eligible unsuccessful candidates. "The candidate who gains more than 50 per cent of the countback votes will be elected," she said. "The successful candidate then has 48 hours to accept the position. "If they accept, the result is then declared. If they don't accept or are no longer eligible, the process is repeated again." Minh Van Tran collected quite a few preference votes, so it could be an interesting time for Greater Dandenong Council post the 24 November State Election. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Itâ€™s their honour By Casey Neill The Queen's Birthday Honours List was littered with recipients with ties to Greater Dandenong. Andrew Crockett was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the law, particularly to legal aid. The nod also recognised the Hawthorn man's service to education and the community. Mr Crockett was a solicitor at Springvale Monash Legal Service in 1996 and served as a board member from 1999 to 2006. After that he became the CEO at Legal Aid Commission ACT. He's now the Victorian Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (VACCRO) board secretary. John Hanlon and Brendan Kincade received Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM) for ser-

vice to veterans and their families. Mr Hanlon, from Cobram, helped to plan the annual RSL Springvale Remembrance Service from 2011 to 2017. Mr Kincade, from Hastings, was a volunteer pension officer at the Noble Park RSL from 1998 to 2008. He took on the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Victorian Branch vice-president role last year. Arvind Srivastava received an OAM for service to the Indian community of Melbourne. The Torquay man's service includes a stint as the City of Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network president from 2004 to 2006. Angela Wheelton, who lives in Southbank, received an OAM for service to the community through a range of organisations. Among those was the Endeavour Hills Net-

ball Club, where she was a coach. She was also involved in Life Education Victoria, known for Healthy Harold the giraffe, the Bali Children Foundation, and Wheelton Philanthropy. Two Australian Police Medal (APM) recipients can also claim ties to Greater Dandenong. Detective Leading Senior Constable Jennifer Parker performed general duties at the Dandenong Police Station in November 1998 before transferring to Melbourne Prosecutions. She then transferred to Benalla to specialise in sex offence and child abuse investigation. Superintendent Michael John Glowaski served as Dandenong Divisional Manager during his 37-year career with Victoria Police. Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia. Three people have been charged over an alleged aggravated car jacking in Springvale on 30 May. Police say a woman had her car taken from her at knifepoint on Lawn Road. The car is believed to have been used for several petrol drive-offs and stealing vehicles in suburbs including Patterson Lakes, Keysborough and Noble Park between 30 May-5 June. On 6 June, a 19-year-old man was arrested after a short foot pursuit by detectives during a police raid of a house at Station Creek Way, Botanic Ridge. He was charged with aggravated carjacking, aggravated burglary and other related offences. Police say the charges relate to an aggravated burglary on Patterson Drive, Lynbrook on 1 June and an attempted aggravated carjacking on Aylmar Road, Lyndhurst on 2 June. He was also allegedly linked to a burglary and attempted aggravated burglary on Lyndhurst Boulevard, Lyndhurst on 2 June. The man was expected to face an out-ofsessions court hearing t at Dandenong Police Station on 6 June. A 19-year-old Narre Warren man was charged with car theft, theft from a motor vehicle, theft, handling proceeds of crime and committing an indictable offence on bail. He was set to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 6 June. Police also charged a 17-year-old Keysborough girl with car theft and driving offences. She was bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.

Thieves stole a wallet left in a car parked at a Noble Park home. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said the thieves used credit cards that were in the wallet to make eight purchases in the Noble Park and Keysborough area. Jamie-Lee McGregor will live on the rations of a refugee to show her support and raise funds for aid. The 28-year-old is taking part in the Ration Challenge during Refugee Week, from Sunday 17 to Sunday 24 June. "When I first saw the small amount of rations I would be living on, I was shocked to say the least," she said. "It is truly devastating to think that people live on these rations, day in and day out. "My family, friends and colleagues have sponsored me to take part in the challenge and the money raised will support refugees in camps, and other vulnerable communities, who desperately need our help." Ms McGregor lives in Dromana and works

in Dandenong. "I've been working in the refugee and asylum seeker field for about four years now as an administration officer," she said. "I'd been feeling really down about the situation experienced by refugees overseas for quite some time and had no idea how I could help. "When I found out about the Ration Challenge through social media I immediately signed up to take part. She'll be living on a small amount of rice, flour, lentils, chick peas, beans, fish and oil. The money raised through the challenge will help to provide food, medicine and education for Syrian refugees living in camps in Jordan. Eight-week wonders By Casey Neill A cooking course with a difference is putting the heat on businesses to step into the kitchen. The Kitchen Challenge is a leadership, teamwork and personal development program delivered in a commercial kitchen. Chef Rob Rees, known for helping celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to transform British school lunches, delivers the program and has done for seven years. Participants explore and develop leadership skills, discover learning styles and face a range of challenges in a safe and supported space. Mr Rees measures their wellbeing along the

way. They also learn a range of cooking skills, and ultimately produce a restaurant-quality lunch for 60 guests. The Journal sat down for Kitchen Challenge cohort four's final lunch at Birches Restaurant at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong on Friday 8 June. The challengers served up gnocchi, scallops, honey-glazed lamb, mushroom ragout, gulab jamun and deconstructed jelly slice. The group included six managers and leaders from white goods manufacturer Miele and six local asylum seekers. "Within an hour of being in the room together they shared 100 per cent of their vulnerability with each other," Mr Rees said.

"They became friends." Miele funded the eight-week course for all participants. Together they shared a journey that pushed them out of their comfort zones to achieve personal and professional growth. The City of Greater Dandenong received funding from VicHealth to run two more challenges this year, in August and October. Local business leaders can get involved at no cost. Young workers renew old More than 200 Dandenong students are helping to return an old train station building to its former glory. The Chisholm Institute crew is restoring a heritage-listed shelter salvaged from the Clayton station during level crossing removal works. It's more than 120 years old and will soon be returned to the precinct as a historical feature. Apprentice carpenter Dale Pryor, whose father is also in the trade, said he'd expected to spend most of his apprenticeship sweeping floors. Now he can't wait to show off his handiwork to his mates. "It's not every day you get to work on something so old, that members of the public have been through every day," he said. What is something people don't know about you? I'm partially deaf in the left ear and am shortsighted. What was your most memorable moment? I have to name two moments as they're both equally memorable - my wedding day and the birth of my children. What would your last meal be? A big bowl of pho soup (Vietnamese rice noodle soup). What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? I would love to see my Dad again. He died when I was two years old and I don't have any memory of him. City downs Suns in a table-topping win By Hayley Wildes In National Premier League (NPL) 2 East soccer action over the weekend, Dandenong City moved to the top of the table with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Goulburn Valley Suns FC at home on Saturday afternoon. Dandenong City got off to a great start with Shaun Filipovic and Liam McCormick goaling at the nine and 17-minute mark, respectively. City headed into halftime with a two-nil lead and piled more pain on the Suns’ defence after the break. In the 59th minute, Filipovic scored his second goal for the game, before Ben Everson made the most of a tired defence to score his own brace with goals in the 78th and 84th minutes. The 5-0 win capped off a great team performance on both offence and defence. Meanwhile, the Springvale White Eagles took it right up to Moreland City, who were sit-

ting on top of the table before Round 15 kicked off. In a first half that saw some promising opportunities go begging, no goals were scored by either team, setting up what was an enthralling second half battle. In the 58th minute, Moreland City’s Lisandro Paz finished off some fine work from Jesse Makarounas to put through a header and give the home team a 1-0 lead. Springvale refused to go away though and fought tooth-and-nail for the remainder of the game. Their hard work was finally rewarded in the 87th minute as a penalty was awarded and the White Eagles were able to convert to even the scores at 1-1 in the 89th minute. Full time scores were 1-1 in an impressive display from the White Eagles. In other NPL news, the Dandenong Thunder last week announced Veton Korcari as their new head coach in what is sure to provide a massive mid-season boost to the Thunder.

Korcari, one of the most celebrated and well-regarded personalities in Thunder history, returns to the club after Andy Vargas and Dandenong parted ways last week. Korcari’s playing career at the Dandenong yielded many wins and memorable moments. Although there was no TAC Cup action over the weekend, the Dandenong Stingrays were still busy at work, continuing to drive improvement as they look to stay atop the TAC Cup ladder. Last Wednesday night, the squad was put through its paces by an AFL legend; three-time premiership player, Norm Smith and Brownlow Medallist, Simon Black. He now runs the Simon Black Academy - an elite Aussie Rules and education academy - and knows plenty about the talent coming through the pathways these days. He was impressed with what he saw from the Rays. “They’re a really committed bunch of guys and they’re obviously going really well, which is great to see and they’re really well led by Craig Black,” he said. “I just did a couple of drills with them and worked with some of the midfielders on some stoppage craft and just tried to add my bit of experience and share some ideas. Obviously, it brings back memories for me - I had aspirations at that age to make it into the AFL.” Black was also impressed with togetherness of the squad. “They’re a great footy club - it had a great feel and atmosphere within the group. I got that feeling that they’re a tight-knit group too - it was a pleasure to be down there for the night,” he said. The Simon Black Academy, which is in its third year, provides its student-athletes with the opportunity to progress their football skills, while also studying a university degree in business and sports development. Sheâ€™s one to watch By Hayley Wildes Oneata Schwalger has been around rugby for as long as she can remember. Having made it to the pinnacle of rugby union - playing at the top level and representing Australia - Oneata, who plays for South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club, is now focused on making a career in rugby league. With her synonymous determination and effort, the 32-year-old mother of two is well on her way to doing just that. Recently, Oneata represented the Combined Affiliated States (made up of players from Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia) at the Women's National Rugby League Championships on the Gold Coast. Taking on the rugby league powerhouse states of New South Wales and Queensland, Oneata and her teammates never backed down and although they were unable to come away with a win, there was great pride in their performance. "It was awesome, especially playing against NSW and QLD teams for the first time. Despite only having two days of training as a team, we weren't far off and I know we can be up there competing for the top spot next year." Oneata said. Oneata's toughness, ability to run through packs and make game-changing plays is what makes her such a tantalising player to watch. Her journey to representing Victoria as a member of the Combined Affiliated States hasn't been an easy one. She admitted she had some mental demons due to shoulder surgery which took months to overcome. The countless hours of rehab, treatment, travel and training were all worth it for Oneata, who ultimately hopes to get drafted to the NRL Women's Premiership competition which kicks off later this year with the four-team competition to be played as double-headers alongside NRL finals matches. "You've just to do what you've got to do to make your dream come true." Oneata said. "100% that's the goal [to get drafted]." With great aspirations, she hasn't lost sight of what her local club - the South Eastern Titans - means to her and how they have helped her thus far. "The club has been awesome." She said. "There's a great bunch of girls there and I love it because of the culture. It took a lot of pressure off me because of the way the girls are and how family-orientated the club is." Women's rugby league continues to go from strength to strength, and with players like Oneata Schwalger taking the game on and providing plenty of highlights, make sure you keep an eye on what the future holds.

Blazing the Team 11 trail Australian football greats Theresa Deas and Debbie Nichols have signed on as Team 11 ambassadors. A week after celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Matildas' first-ever appearance at a FIFA tournament - a tournament at which Deas, Nichols and fellow south-east Victorian product Jane Oakley all played - Deas and Nichols have declared support for their home region's push for A-League and W-League admission. Deas, an 18-times capped Matilda across a 10-year international career, represented Victoria for 18 years throughout playing days at Dandenong City, Dandenong North, Waverley City, Berwick City and Casey Comets. Nichols earned 12 Matildas caps and played for Victoria for 20 years as well as for Springvale, Dandenong North, Dandenong, Berwick City and Casey Comets. Football Federation Victoria Hall of Fame member Nichols, now a junior coach with Southern United in the WNPL, said it felt right for her to become a Team 11 ambassador. "I've been involved in football in the southeast since 1977," Nichols said. "There is so much opportunity in this region to have an A-League and W-League side. If Team 11 can get the licence football will boom even more than it is already is. "You see the talent even just in Gippsland, who are hampered by distance, it's a hotbed. "And then, when you include the south-east corridor, there is no doubt there is capability and the players to have a strong W-League team in the south-east." Deas, a Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame member, said it is imperative a W-League bid is attached to Team 11's A-League bid. "I'm a Dandenong girl. I played all of my career in the Dandneong-Casey region and it's at the bottom of my heart to promote football in the area," Deas said. "I really think if we're going to go forward for women's football in this state and in this country then there should be more equality. "For that reason I think we should make sure if there are any new A-League bids that we start at the start for both sexes and that every opportunity is given to all people who want to play football, so there is an actual career pathway from grassroots through to elite for every child."
