Big screen action for happy Tiger fan Richmond’s flogging of Essendon on Saturday night was particularly sweet for ardent Tiger fan, Anthony Quirk. Much to Anthony’s delight he was able to view every minute of the 71 point drubbing on his new 65 inch smart TV thanks to Star News Group and Harvey Norman. Harvey Norman delivered the television to Anthony’s Narre Warren home on Saturday just in time for the live broadcast. “It was fantastic to be able to watch the game on such a big screen, especially as I know a few Essendon supporters who used to give me hell,“ Anthony said. Anthony saw the competition advertised in his copy of the Berwick News and entered “straight away“ online. “I didn’t expect to win the TV but as the saying goes you’ve got to be in to win it.“ Anthony is a keen consumer of Star News both in print and online. “I do read the paper. The stories are interesting and I like keep up to date with the local police and what they doing. I like to keep myself informed about what’s going on with issues in the area.“ As well as football and other live sport, Anthony is looking forward to subscribing to Netflix now he has an internet-capable television. Anthony has already sold his old TV, which he bought 15 years ago, to a workmate. “My old TV was only 45 inches but was heavier than the new one. I’ve hooked (the new TV) up to internet and can hook up my ipad if I wish to see photos on a big screen. “I watch movies than anything else. I have

Trees for Toomuc Pakenham Rotary Club has revitalised Toomuc Creek, planting 1500 trees and breathing new life into the reserve. The group was assisted by Lakeside College, Pakenham Consolidated School and Lakeside's Residents Group to achieve the humble milestone. Over the course of three days, 11 garden beds were rejuvenated and filled with trees. Rotary's Ian Wake said it was an initiative the group had aspired to carry out for quite some time. "It's a good cause and it makes the area look a lot nicer," he said. "We're ecstatic that the kids happily jumped on board and helped out with the planting."

When losing is winning They’re losers in the best way possible. Having recently taken part in their own inhouse Biggest Loser competition, the team at Barry Plant Pakenham has waved goodbye to a massive 92 kilos. As Barry Plant Pakenham managing director Dan O’Loughlin explained, the competition not only encouraged staff members to adopt a healthier lifestyle, but also worked to boost staff morale. “One of our agents in the office noticed that we’d all had a social Christmas period and that we’d expanded our waistlines and came up with the idea of an eight week Biggest Loser challenge,” Dan said. The concept was simple. 25 staff took part in an initial weigh-in and each week following would have a ‘check-in’. These check-ins were facilitated by a competition organiser and the amount of weight lost was kept secret until the last week. “It was all individual based. Myself and my business partner (Matt Ketteringham) provided fruit and tried to assist where we could. The office was full of fruit each week as opposed to having cakes and doughnuts,” Dan said. “It was quite incredible - as you’d expect the competitive nature came out. "There was a lot of secret training going on and a lot of personal training that wasn’t existing previously but inside the office there was good banter and more importantly, people were feeling healthier and shedding a few kilos.” With each of the staff members contributing to a prize pool, the team’s ‘biggest loser’ took home an impressive financial reward. Dan explained the competition was extremely well received among staff, who see themselves as “one big family.” “We spend up to 15 hours a day together in an open office - there are no secrets here,” Dan said.

Half of the Barry Plant Pakenham team who together lost a massive 92 kilograms throughout their in-house Biggest Loser competition. “If one person is having a bad day, we all are. We’re an open book so there were no issues (with the competition) whatsoever.

“We’ll definitely be looking at doing it again ... it was a great result.” Barry Plant Pakenham is located at 18 Sta-

tion Street in Pakenham. For more information, phone 5941 1977 or visit www.barryplant. com.au/pakenham.

Swim school makes a splash at awards A Pakenham swim school has unveiled plans to open a second facility on Mulcahy Road after making a splash at the AUSTSWIM Victoria awards ceremony. James and Michelle Bradley, operators of Pakenham’s JUMP Swim School, edged out corporate leisure centres and council-owned pools to claim the award of Swim School of the Year. Due to increasing demand, which has even seen the small centre develop waiting lists, the couple are now pursuing a second pool. Mr Bradley, a former carpenter with a sports teaching degree, said he was honoured by the recognition. “To think that an independently owned swim school can win an award, it makes us feel

really good to think we’re providing an important service to kids in the community,” he said. “We’ve been involved with JUMP for about two and a half years and now we’re looking to open another swim school local to the area. “We’ve seen the demand for swim lessons because we’ve had numerous waiting lists so we’re just trying to find a way to get another 600 kids per week swimming.” The earmarked Mulcahy Road facility would include an internal fit-out of a swim school, designed to accommodate smaller classes to ensure that children have individual attention to enhance the learn-to-swim experience. Classes would run for 30 minutes consecutively from 7am to 7.30pm. It is currently pending approval by Cardinia Shire.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Banish chills with heaps of hot style Melbourne’s winters demand effective home heating. With so many types of heaters on the market, choosing wisely can be a challenge. Here are two ideas to consider, writes Carole Levy. SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM The Nobo Oslo range of panel heaters, in keeping with their Scandinavian styling, are white, neat and simple as can be. Their design means heaters that are practically unnoticeable yet help create a minimalist style that easily co-exists with your other furnishings. The panels’ arc is only 5.5 centimetres thick, so they don’t protrude unnecessarily and use minimal space. They can even be used in the bathroom to continue your style throughout the entire home. They are perfect for homeowners and renters alike. Because of their clever top venting, they can be wall-mounted behind furniture where other heaters cannot go. Or attach castors so they can be moved from room to room. Nobo Oslo panels are designed to withstand even the coldest of Melbourne winters. They are recommended for large bedrooms, bathrooms, and living rooms of about 24 square metres. They can be provided with thermostats, timers and child-locks and, with their fan-free technology, are great for signiicantly reduced dust and allergens.

Stylish and effective heating solutions are a specialty at Harvey Norman Nobo Oslo panel heaters, ranging from 0.7kW at $299 to 2.4kW at $545, are available from a Harvey Norman store near you. SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE Mitsubishi Electric advanced technology in reverse-cycle inverter split-systems provides high-speed heating and cooling, with extra energy savings compared to non-inverter.

Depending on the model, Mitsubishi Electric split-systems feature a Nano Platinum Deodorising Filter for improved air quality and reduced allergens; a built-in 24-hour or weekly timer; a silent fan setting; and R32 refrigerant that enhances energy eficiency and lowers the risk of environmental harm. With a Wi-Fi option available, the systems can be managed via a compatible device, so coming

home to a cold house can be a thing of the past. And they are easy to clean, with designs that enable easy removal of front panels and air-low vents to provide open access to fans. Ranging from 2.5kW at $899 to 7.8kW with timer at $2599, various models of split-systems are available from Harvey Norman stores – and, until the end of July, they come with an eftpos gift card bonus.

Casey’s CEO search Advertisements for a new Casey Council chief executive have been posted three months after the long-serving Mike Tyler's sudden departure. The position is currently being advertised by recruitment firm Davidson Executive Recruitment, Casey Council has confirmed. Casey people and culture manager Fran Boyd said the council was on track to start in-

terviews in July after a "suitable field" of candidates were identified. Casey has been without a permanent CEO since its long-serving boss Mike Tyler announced his sudden departure from Casey on 22 February. In the meantime, there has been a churning of acting CEOs - with council executives Sheena Frost, David Wilkinson and Steve Dalton spending time at the helm. Recently, Cr Ablett said there's "no war" be-

tween councillors and the council's administration despite the departure of Mr Tyler and the first acting CEO Ms Frost within a month. Mr Dalton, who managed the construction of Bunjil Place, was then appointed by councillors as acting chief executive. While he took scheduled leave in April, Mr Wilkinson temporarily filled the position. Davidson Executive Recruitment was selected at a special closed council meeting on 23 April. 12379812-HM09-18

Students at Berwick Primary School have helped people ‘sleeping rough’ brave the winter chills, On 5 June, the students rugged up in their woollen scarves, beanies and gloves to raise $1119 for charity Sleeping Bags for Homelessness. Their funds will help pay for more than 30 sub-zero sleeping bags, which will be distributed to the homeless. The cheque was gratefully received by the charity’s director Donna Stolzenberg. According to the 2016 national census, more than 24,000 Victorians were homeless. More than 1100 were sleeping in tents or on the streets. In Casey, there was an estimated 1280 homeless persons - up nearly 38 per cent in five years. Berwick Primary teacher Venessa Barlow, who leads the junior school council, said students were keen to get on board a “great cause”. “It is so close to home, as it affects so many Victorians.”

I was disappointed to read Cam LoucadoWells' article titled "No Budget On Birthday". It seemed to me a blatant attempt to discredit Susan Serey, who is a hardworking councillor and Liberal Candidate for the state seat Of Narre Warren South. There were several councillors who were unable to attend that meeting and yet you singled out Councillor Serey. Sometimes people just can't attend certain events. It's part of life. There are two types of journalists Cam – those who faithfully and accurately report the news and those who seek to influence public opinion according to their particular personal biases. Which sort are you? Also, in response to the Labour candidate's comments: given that Gary Maas, the union organiser, lives in St Kilda and has never had anything to do with the Casey Community, his comments about "respecting the local community" should be seen for what they are - hollow and hypocritical! Why can't the ALP preselect a local for once? L Grace, Berwick

tive in raising our concerns with Council, they seem to have fallen on deaf ears and like the residents of Timbarra, our daily lives include dealing with the constant and massive dropping of leaves and twigs and branches onto our gardens and driveways; the ever full gutters and spouting that is clogged up; the loss of any opportunity to maintain an attractive and lush garden; and the fear that huge limbs may well drop soon from any one of these massive trees and that someone or someone’s property will sustain serious injury/damage. We are aware of neighbours who have experienced major storm water drainage blockage issues that have required expensive repair work and that the problems were caused by Council’s trees. We also resent having to act as Council’s unpaid garden labourers in the never ending quest to try and tidy up after these incredibly messy trees. It is our view that whilst the Wallengarra

White Gums are a lovely tree, they are most suited to planting in large open spaces such as public parks and should not be foisted onto the nature strips of residential properties in suburban locations. The problems experienced by residents of Timbarra and the residents of Ludlow Court in the Panorama estate are serious and they are having a very negative impact on the ability of these people to enjoy their homes and gardens. I would really welcome any assistance that you might be able to offer in dealing with the plight we find ourselves in, and would certainly welcome any support that the Star Group local media might be able to apply to Cardinia Shire in urging them to take action to deal with the detrimental effects created by the Wallengarra White Gums. Left to foot the bill Tracey Ryan was shocked to discover she would have to pay the entire bill to fix her damaged fence even though it faces a public walkway. The Cranbourne North resident says Casey Council won’t even chip in a cent to replace her fence which is part of a walkway between Godwin Crescent and Norford Court. “I don’t expect them to for the whole fence because half of it is ours but they won’t even foot half the bill,” Ms Ryan said. “They’re saying because its public land they don’t have to do it. I went into the fencing laws Victoria (website) and said if it’s on a reserve they don’t have to pay but it’s not a reserve, it’s a walkway.” According to Ms Ryan, the walkway is used by school children whom she claims have pulled out fence palings over the years. “The fence really needs replacing and I rang up the council to find out how I go about sending in the quotes and the lady said: ‘I’m sorry we don’t pay for it, you’re on your own,’” she said. Casey Council’s manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said the City of Casey had been in contact with Ms Ryan and “understands their frustrations. “Council officers have inspected the fence and in this instance the fence does not sit on Council occupied land, therefore unfortunately it does not qualify for any costs to be reimbursed by Council,” he said. “The City of Casey has a Shared Cost Fencing Policy which stipulates what scenarios Council will cover costs. To view this, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au.” Ms Ryan, who was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2010, labelled Casey Council as a “disgrace”. “It’ll be nearly a $2000 fence and I don’t

Insight wins fight for site By Cam Lucadou-Wells The gamble paid off. After a vocal campaign, the state's only specialised school for blind children has been assured of survival with a $1.5 million State grant. The two-year funding will keep the "core" of the Berwick-based school alive while the "blockage" in enrolments is addressed, says founder Alan Lachman. "We did risk everything," he said of the public campaign. "(Education Minister) James Merlino could have said shut us down. "We gambled and won." The school is set to enter a new era, Mr Lachman says. One that includes a new principal, with positions advertised for further teachers, aides and a fundraising co-ordinator. Mr Lachman was confident of doubling the school's enrolments to 25 within a year. He also hoped to build a more "positive and open" partnership with the Education Department - which he had alleged had blocked referrals from mainstream schools. In February, Mr Lachman spoke out after education regulator Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority threatened the school's closure. According to a VRQA audit, the school lacked funds and lacked students. Mr Lachman said Insight existed because vision-impaired students in mainstream schools had lower employment prospects. "I put it to James Merlino and (Premier) Daniel Andrews - do you want the school to be around? "We have to have students and the blockages have to be resolved. "If they can't be resolved in the meantime,

Alan Lachman has won his campaign for State support. 177499 we need money." Insight will also seek philanthropic funds to retain its outreach service, including mobile classrooms, into mainstream schools. The purpose-built school has a capacity for 100 students. Specialist-trained staff and aides - with a team of transcribers - teach in braille and alternative print formats. They also make use of assistive technolo-

gies, a sensory playground and customised desks and equipment. "If we get more support, we can give these kids more," Mr Lachman said. "If we can give these kids more, it allows them to get a job." A Department of Education and Training spokeswoman said the department would continue to support the operation of the school and students - with $2.4 million pro-

vided for Insight's programs. "Victoria does a great job supporting students who are blind or vision impaired, including through targeted programs and additional funding through the Program for Students with Disability." "This great work is further supported by the services of non-government schools such as the Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired."

Presenting the cheque to members of the Cranbourne Food Truck on May 28, State General Manager for Victoria, Kelvin Sargent, said that the company was pleased to support such a worthwhile and necessary community service. "The Cranbourne Food Truck is relied upon by many in the local community for nourishment and the basic daily supplies we often take for granted," she said. "SUEZ is proud to assist the Cranbourne

Regional Uniting Church to continue their good works through the service and help more people get back on their feet." Cranbourne Food Truck Secretary Christine Marsh said the much-needed funding will extend the service's impact in the local community. "This grant enables us to continue our work of providing free food and fellowship for the needy and disadvantaged of our community," she said. "We will be spending the funds on fresh ingredients for our cooks to provide hot nourishing meals, to maintain our supply of nonperishable goods for food parcels, and on

maintenance to our truck to ensure we can continue serving our community in safety." Now in its fourth year, the SUEZ Community Grants program has donated more than $575,000 in funding to community organisations and projects across Australia that help communities and the environment thrive. Operated by the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church, the service operates after hours four nights per week. It serves more than 3,000 nourishing hot meals each year across the area and provides fresh fruit and vegetables, groceries and toiletries locals in need. Learning Stone at centre Berwick College’s deepening ties with indigenous culture were cemented with the opening of the school’s Wominjeka Centre and its Learning Stone on 30 May. During the ceremony, students performed, spoke and displayed art works. Wurundjeri elder Ian Hunter delivered Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony.

The event coincided with National Reconciliation Week and its theme Don’t Keep History a Mystery. The Wominjeka Centre, opened by Department of Education and Training regional director Stephen Gniel, will provide life-skills support for students with additional physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs. The Learning Stone will be a place for

groups to build ties and awareness about local indigenous culture. Prinicipal Kerri Bolch said both projects celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture - which is a “cross-curriculum priority” for the school. Students take part in a Smoking ceremony, meaningful class activities, excursions and The Long Walk during Dreamtime at the ‘G.

“Through acknowledging our shared history, staff, students and parents stand together in unity for a brighter future for those who are vulnerable, and are committed to act for the futures of our indigenous young people.” The college won the 2017 Victorian Education Excellence Award for outstanding Koorie education.

As an extension of their home, residents share beautiful community facilities - from the clubhouse, to the pool, to the vegetable garden – there’s enough space to entertain and enjoy an active lifestyle. Step outside the front door and experience resort style living. Take a stroll and you’ll very likely bump into someone to chat to, or a welcoming social group, event, or activity to join and enjoy. There is always something happening – from big events such as Grandparents Day, Christmas in July and Melbourne Cup luncheons, to smaller gatherings for shopping, gardening, billiards and day trips. A village spokesperson said while there is

always plenty to do, it was up to residents as to how much or how little they choose to participate. “It’s there if you want it,“ the spokesperson said. Retirement Communities Australia is a family owned and operated business. The RCA team has collective experience of over 120 years in building and managing retirement villages. “One of the most important points of difference between an RCA Village and others, is our active health program,“ the spokesperson said. “We want our residents to enjoy living in our villages and we do everything we can to make sure everyone enjoys good health. Research has shown that socially engaged and physically active people lead healthier and happier lives.“ To book a tour of the village at 11 Main Street, Pakenham, or for more information contact 1800 770 222

Led by mother and son team Joanne and Raymond Staindl, Tour Local provides an enjoyable, affordable and accessible way for seniors to continue travelling to destinations both near and far. “We provide individuals with the opportunity to meet like-minded people who share the same zest for travelling and the same desire to share new experiences,” Raymond said. “We offer more than just simple transport from point A to point B - we provide our people with an experience from start to finish that they won’t soon forget.” As a family owned and operated business, Tour Local Pakenham individualises each trip. Joanne and Raymond are happy to sit down with a group to discuss destination options and craft a tailored tour experince. Tour Local is also a coach charter company, managing the logistics of both large-scale transfers as well as every day transfers. “Anyone can hire a bus, drive to a place, take a photo and return home. It’s what happens throughout that journey that truly makes an experience,” Raymond said. “We put people at ease from the very start. We make sure everything is taken care of and we assist in any way we can throughout the journey - it’s all about that family feel.” Tour Local was started by Joanne 10 year ago when she began visiting local villages and clubs in the area. “The business has grown a lot since then with word of mouth being our biggest contributor, as people just leave talking about our tours and the experience we create,” Raymond said.

Prey for the scammers

Tour Local provide people with an experience that they won’t forget. Customers of Tour Local can be assured they are in experienced hands with both Joanne and Raymond who are both experienced travellers. “Joanne first found her zest for the travel industry back when she used to work as a tour guide on the coaches in New Zealand.

From there her love for the travel life has only grown,” Raymond said. “I’m an avid traveller and have spent a good part of my past 10 years travelling the world and living abroad.” For more information about Tour Local Pakenham, email ray@tourlocal.com.au

“If in doubt, don’t”. That’s the message Consumer Affairs Victoria - the state’s fair trading regulator - is giving older Victorians when it comes to staying safe online. Many older Victorians are attractive targets for scammers because they often own substantial assets and have access to life savings and superannuation. Older Victorians are also the fastest growing online user group in the country. Many of you go online to keep in touch with your children, family and friends, to correspond via email, watch YouTube videos or catch-up TV, or to research and book travel, to name a few. Life events such as financial hardship and recovering from illness, loss and trauma can also leave you more vulnerable to scams. Consumer Affairs Victoria is working to reduce the harm caused by scammers by building greater awareness and understanding of online scams among older Victorians. Scammers are professional criminals. For more information on common types of scams, tips on how to identify, avoid or report them, visit consumer.vic.gov.au/scamsavvy

Masterman said the transition was seamless with Director of Nursing Dion Kimutai leading his team. In the heart of the Pakenham community, Menarock Life McGregor Gardens is a one level residential care facility accommodating 90 ageing in place beds, 18 of which are reserved for residents with dementia. The rooms at McGregor Gardens are lightfilled and look onto lush garden beds and trees for the enjoyment of residents, families and friends. “Salisbury House has also been a part of the community in Upper Beaconsfield since 1888

We know influenza is a highly contagious viral infection, spread by contact with fluids from coughs and sneezes. Typically, Australia’s annual flu season occurs between April and October. For the best possible protection this year, my advice to all Victorians is to be vaccinated anytime from mid-April onwards. This should ensure they are protected by the time the disease begins to spread more widely in the community. The record number of flu notifications last year in Victoria alone is a timely reminder about the importance of vaccination - there were more than 48,000 cases - and tragically, a number of deaths were reported. Already, preparations are underway to provide influenza immunisations for a number of key groups in the community. This year, we expect to make more than one million doses of vaccine available. People aged 65 years and over will receive a specially formulated flu vaccine that potentially increases their protection especially against one strain of influenza that is more common and severe in the elderly. All Victorians over 65 are eligible for this free flu vaccine. For people under 65 and without significant existing medical conditions, getting vaccinated at any time is perfectly okay. No one should miss an opportunity to be vaccinated if it has already been already scheduled. In Victoria this season for the first time we are providing free influenza immunisation to babies and children from six months to five years of age. Two doses, given a minimum of one month apart, are required for those children receiving the vaccine for the first time. Our message this winter is simple: ‘You never forget the flu - don’t forget your flu shot.’ Flu vaccinations save lives. When more people are vaccinated, fewer people become ill or suffer life-threatening complications from influenza. The flu is not like a cold. Symptoms last on average one to two weeks but for some it is takes several weeks to recover. It kills more than 3,500 Australians each year. If you’ve got the flu, visit your doctor, talk to a pharmacist or phone Nurse-On-Call on 1300 60 60 24 - 24 hours a day. Victoria also has 12 Supercare Pharmacies open 24/7. Additional information can be found on the Better Health Channel: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/fluinfluenza-immunisation.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Jax Wax CEO Tina Copland. 179765

Picture: GARY SISSONS

From Officer to the world By Rebecca Skilton Truly Australian and inspired by nature. That’s the message Officer’s Jax Wax Australia business owners Tina and Geoff Copland take with them worldwide. Exported to numerous countries and regions including Asia, Australasia, America, Africa and Europe, Jax Wax Australia is the manufacturer of quality wax products. Having recently rebranded (formally trading under the brand name Adam and Eve), the company works to emphasise their Australian roots, a factor that Tina says is an enticing element for overseas markets. “‘Australia’ is important for exporting,” Tina, who is the CEO of Jax Wax, said. “To brand with ‘Australia’ is really, really important. People associate Australia with things like ‘clean, green, and high quality,’ so we wanted to keep that connection (with the use of ‘Australia’ in the rebranding).” “We do a lot of travelling and we’ve found that people in other countries give their businesses (an Australian feel). There’s a company

in the UK called Outback Organics. It’s manufactured in Spain. There’s another one called Australian Body Care who are from the UK as well. “So we want to get across that we’re genuinely Australian. It’s something we really push on our website, and in our marketing when we go overseas” In order to help spread their Aussie message, Jax Wax products have native names, and packaging is styled using designs of Australian plants. The reverse side of products provides information about what the plants have been used for in Australia historically. In extension, Jax Wax is working with local sporting and educational groups to help support the future of young Indigenous kids and teenagers and sponsor The Kempsey Dragons Junior Rugby League Club. “What we’re finding through training is that people don’t really care how the wax is performing; they want to know about us and what we stand for,” Jax Wax Marketing Manager Rosie Hopgood said. “They want to know that we’re vegan, that

we’re cruelty free, that we are giving back to Aboriginal people; that we are more than just wax and more than a brand - that we have substance.” Jax Wax began in 2000 as manufacturers of wax seal for wine bottles, before moving on to manufacture a range of products including strip, hot and cartridge wax. Admitting their focus was always on export, the company distributes four to eight palettes of products monthly, with each palette holding between 700 and one thousand kilos. “Our focus is on export ... we always set out to export,” Tina said. “There are several billion people in the world and there is about 25 million in Australia so you have to export. I think our business is currently around 50% exports and we expect within five years it to be about 70% to 90% export, so that’s the focus.” With the business still growing and expanding into new countries, Tina and the Jax Wax team have become well-practiced in tackling new and different marketplaces. On entering a new market, the team attends trade shows,

preforms demonstrations and undertakes strenuous research to ensure that both Jax Wax and the potential distributor reflect the same ideals and values. However for Tina and her tight-knit, familylike team, as well as providing the marketplace with a quality product, they insist it is paramount for businesses to maintain an ethical and moral compass. “I think you have to have a moral compass,” Tina said. “We are an ethical company and I firmly believe you have to treat people correctly. “We never undercut or sell around our distributors either here or overseas. Because we will get salons who say; ‘can I buy from you direct’ and we’ll say ‘9 out of 10 times we will be more expensive’. We don’t undercut (our wholesalers),” Tina said. “The reality is that is that we want to be in a place where they will promote us because they’re happy dealing with us. “Because rather than having a short term game, we look at things for the long term.”

Top tips for doing business with China - the easy way Before leaping into the China market, companies should be ready to face an array of planning and operational business challenges. information for planning and commencing commercial operations with China. The top five tips to emerge from the forum were: 1. Ask yourself why you want to go to China. Will your products or services be successful in China? Why? How do your products or

services compete with other domestic and international competitors? Do you have the time, money and resources? 2. Do your due diligence. Check on the relevant opportunities, markets, partners, suppliers, policies, etc and set a detailed plan, budget and realistic timeframes. 3. Increase your cultural awareness and learn

as much about Chinese culture as possible. 4. Build relationships by engaging with reliable local partners or agents to gain access to wider contacts. 5 Seek help from the many organisations, located both here and overseas, that offer advice to Australian businesses in the development of their China strategy.

The Warriors' triple treat By Hayley Wildes

City of Casey’s strategic director of city planning and infrastructure division Peter Fitchett, City of Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti and Cardinia Shire Council Mayor, Cr Collin Ross re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the three councils.

Councils support this A-League bid By Nick Creely It’s now a year since the Team 11 pitch materialised at a 1 June launch event in the heart of Greater Dandenong. The south-east of Victoria has united as one behind the bid to push for an A-League and W-League admission into the national competition, with 12 local councils now pledging support for the bid. On Friday 1 June, the three councils driving the bid - the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia - have re-committed to the cause by re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that kick-started the process 12 months ago. However, those MoUs have been bolstered by Letters of Supports from surrounding councils including: Frankston City, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Knox City, City of Monash, Baw Baw Shire, Bass Coast Shire, South Gippsland Shire, Latrobe City and Wellington Shire.

These letters were included in Team 11’s Expression of Interest document submitted to Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Deloitte last week. The Letters of Support are indicative of the widespread interest in Team 11’s bid in the south-east of Victoria. City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the re-signing of the MoU was important in the commitment to bringing the Team 11 bid to life. “The A-League, W-League and Youth Team bid is progressing very well,” he said. “The three councils are working very hard together. We committed to this 12 months ago but have re-signed this MoU to make sure that we are all working together to bring a club to the south-east.” This sentiment was echoed by City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, who believes it is a significant moment for the region and the strength of the bid. “The re-signing of the MOU is a real line

in the sand moment for Team 11’s bid,” Ablett said. “Enormous amounts of work have been done over recent months to position this bid as the strongest of its type seeking an A-League licence.” And more importantly, the residents of the south-east bid are right behind the push for ALeague entry, as Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross explained. “When the consortium goes out looking for funding to develop the project further, people need to know that the local government authorities are right behind the bid and the residents in those areas are right behind it,” he said. “Councils being the most direct link to the community know what the residents are after and this sporting project will undoubtedly bring activity to the south-east like nothing else.”

Saturday's Big V basketball triple-header at Cardinia Life certainly didn't disappoint. With all three teams in action, the Warriors finished the night undefeated and the crowd was treated to some great basketball. The Youth League 2 Women got things off to a flying start, completely dominating their Whittlesea opponents, running out 83-51 winners. Tremendous contributions across the board - led by Ellie Coutts (20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks), Samantha Neil (12 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals, 6 assists, 2 blocks) and Sarah Thomson (18 points, 7 rebounds) proved far too much for the Pacers to handle. The win solidified Pakenham's second position on the ladder with a record of 9-2. Next up was the Youth League 2 Men, who had a battle on their hands against the Melton Thoroughbreds. In a dramatic finish, the Warriors fended off the Thoroughbreds to claim a 92-87 win. The trio of Ned Weideman (26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists), Lee Belton (20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) and Nathan Dodgson (20 points) kept the scoreboard ticking over and led the Warriors home down the stretch. Looking to make it three wins for the night, the Division 2 Men claimed an important win in the context of their season, taking down Melton, 81-78. Ben Gaze (20 points, 5 rebounds) and Brad Bridgewater (18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) were instrumental on the offensive end, whilst Hayden Davey (15 rebounds, 12 points, 4 assists) and Ashley Szalek (14 points, 11 rebounds) controlled the boards and contributed on offence when called upon. The win sees the Warriors move to 6-6, bouncing back from three straight defeats. They currently sit seventh on the ladder. On Sunday, the Youth League 2 Men were unable to make it a clean sweep for the weekend, falling to the Whittlesea Pacers on the road, 78-69. Lee Belton (25 points) did all he could on the offensive end, but the Pacers had too many contributors as the Warriors struggled to find their offensive rhythm. Nathan Dodgson chipped in with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Despite the loss, the Warriors sit fifth with a record of 9-6. Big V takes a break this weekend, with the Warriors set to return for Round 12 action on 16 June. The Division 2 Men face the Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday, 16 June on the road, before returning home on the to take on the Southern Peninsula Sharks at 4pm. The Youth League 2 Men will take to the floor beforehand, taking on the Chelsea Gulls from 2pm. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 Women hit the road on Sunday, 17 June to take on Werribee.

They're putting Pakenham on the map By Hayley Wildes

The Warriors will be competing at the National Junior Classic in Dandenong. Picture: SUPPLIED 50 STAR NEWS

|

Thursday, 7 June, 2018

When you're a member of a sporting club, there's always a sense of pride when you're able to represent that club on the national stage. That's exactly what the Pakenham Warriors Under 14 boys will be doing when they compete at the National Junior Classic at Dandenong Stadium this weekend. What makes this achievement even more special is the fact these talented boys will be the first Pakenham team, of any age-group, to ever compete at the headline event - which sees the best 128 club teams in Australia battle it out for bragging rights. The Warriors qualified for the National Junior Classic, which starts on Saturday and concludes on Queen's Birthday Monday, thanks to their stellar VJBL Under 14 Victorian Championship form. A seven-game winning streak to begin the

season saw the Warriors take over games with their strong defence and ability to get out and run on offence. When the Warriors get stops and push the pace, they are a handful - wreaking havoc and often leaving their opponents gasping for air. The team described their seven-game winning streak as a 'confidence-booster' and it gave them the belief they can match it against the best. The Warriors will battle it out in the Under 14 boy's tournament against 15 other teams, with the Warriors drawn to Group B - alongside Nunawading, Warrnambool and Blacktown. Whilst achieving a first for their club, the Warriors are not satisfied with just making up the numbers; they want to bring home the silverware and put Pakenham on the map. Compared to other powerhouse associations such as Dandenong, Knox and Nunawading, Pakenham - whilst it is growing exponentially - is still considered a smaller association.

You'd be a fool to think that means they'll be a walkover though. The boys are ready to take it right up to the big associations and showcase that typical Warrior spirit. Coach Brett Small is extremely proud of his 10-man squad and preached the importance of making the most of this opportunity. "It's all about the opportunity." He said. "There are some players who score more, others who rebound, but it's all about the team and letting them use their individual skills within the system." The squad is filled with boys who have come up through the Pakenham Warriors system; showcasing the association's ability to develop and foster local talent. With plenty to play for and the entire Pakenham association behind them, this squad is destined to make some noise and show everyone what Pakenham basketball is all about. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

The pieces are falling into place and, gradually, they're making up the AFL Greater East puzzle. All eight South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) clubs have now given a clear indication of where their futures may lie following a dramatic week of local football and netball developments. After Officer and Beaconsfield made it clear that it was their preference to join AFL Yarra Ranges' AFL Greater East divisional football and netball set-up, Cranbourne announced that - ideally - it would join the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) from 2019. Since then, Doveton, Berwick, TooradinDalmore, Narre Warren, and Pakenham have all given a clear indication of which directions they wish to head. Through a statement on the Doveton Facebook page, president Aaron Henwood said it was the recommendation of the club executive for the Doves to affiliate with AFL Greater East from 2019. The club is scheduled to hold its special general meeting at Robinson Reserve on 26 June, at which point members will vote to formally decide its future. Berwick president Glen Gambetta, meanwhile, said his club was also "leaning towards" AFL Greater East citing its eagerness to keep its netball and football arms together. "We would like to see this region have some representation in Eastern (the Eastern Football League), and while we would like to potentially be there, we will lose netball forever," he said. "We'll make a recommendation on 12 June but at this stage we are leaning towards AFL Greater East." Along similar lines, Narre Warren president Stuart Stephenson said his club would also vote on 12 June. "The expectation is that we'll vote towards AFL Greater East," he said. "We've been strong on retaining our football and netball clubs into the future." Pakenham president Darren Sidebottom was much more succinct, simply saying that the Lions had two options to consider - Yarra Ranges (AFL Greater East) or the Gippsland League - at its vote tonight (Wednesday, 6 June). Tooradin-Dalmore's Greg Kelly, meanwhile, made it clear that his club sees its future in West Gippsland. "As it stands, we have applied for West Gippsland and we've had several meetings with the competition, and they've been very positive," he said. "They (AFL Gippsland) are re-structuring and their whole game has changed. "We are a small country town; we simply can't compete with the Berwicks, Narre Warrens and Beaconsfields, and it's simply not fair. We are throwing everything we can at this - we've put the paperwork in and are just waiting for the review to come through." Officer became the first piece of the puzzle to seemingly slot into place late last month when its committee met to formally endorse a transfer to AFL Yarra Ranges - a motion that the News believes was passed unanimously. Officer was the first SEFNL club to publically announce its position and has since written to AFL Yarra Ranges to officially commence the process of a move. Officer Senior Football Club president Nick McLennan told the News that his club's decision was one that hadn't been taken lightly, "but one which we know is best for the future of our football club and football in the region". "One of the driving factors behind this decision was also the future of the ROC Netball Club, as it is very much our desire to ensure that both our football and netball clubs can continue to coexist and play our home games together," he said. "We think this option presents a great opportunity for both our respective clubs." In a statement provided to the News, club president Gerry Kelly said: "Due to the upcoming demise of the SEFNL competition at the end of 2018, the Cranbourne Football Club has sought and gained permission from AFL South East to negotiate with the MPNFL and member clubs to join their league in season 2019." The News understands that AFL Greater East is still in the frame for the Eagles as a contingency plan should the MPNFL clubs vote against them coming across. But Cranbourne believes that the MPNFL

offers its best long-term option for playing in a competitive and stable competition. Kelly said his club had been on a long journey to this point, taking an "exhaustive look" at each of its options - including the Eastern Football League, Yarra Ranges, and the MPNFL. "We plan to speak to all of the MPNFL clubs in the coming month and we hope they'll be accepting of us because of our geographic situation, but also to help them form a third division," he added. "We'd love to be part of the MPNFL - that's where we see our future." Beaconsfield, meanwhile, had a committee meeting on Tuesday of last week and voted in favour of a move to AFL Greater east after much soul-searching by president Troy Robinson and other key figures from within the club. "It's a massive pressure valve release for us," Robinson said. "It's been a frustrating topic for the past 12 months, so to have a resolution allows us to go through the formal application process, and it's a massive relief for us. "We're excited that we can finally move on to the future now - it was a 99.9 per cent vote in favour of." Robinson said the club did its due diligence and considered a move to the powerful EFL but opted for the Yarra Ranges proposal for one major reason - a factor that overrode everything. "The key link strategically is that we retained a relationship with netball, and that's the most underpinning and overwhelming factor for us as a club," he said. "We have a very strong relationship with our netball club and that was a massive desire to retain that, and a critical ingredient was to go in a competition that could accommodate both football and netball together." The club is now at the stage of formally applying to join AFL Yarra Ranges, but Robinson did admit that the long-term future of his club could well be elsewhere. "Is it the long term the right choice? Crystal ball, we can't tell at this point - we have a massive desire to be involved in the West Gippsland competition, that's our future flavour of choice," Robinson said. "We want to pursue that model - we want to play the highway, the Garfields, Nar Nar Goons, the Bunyips, Warragul and Drouin, and we believe there's a massive opportunity if the AFL gets smart, re-zones and looks at the football model properly. "We believe that's still the right option for our football, but it's not on the table right now, but we'll definitely be showing interest in the coming years." The AFL Yarra Ranges' presentation to the SEFNL clubs - centred on what's set to become the AFL Greater East competition - clearly made a strong impression when it was rolled out. It clearly set out the proximity of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges clubs to those currently in the SEFNL, with the travel times between them contrary to popular belief. Should SEFNL clubs join the AFL Yarra Ranges competition from 2019, that would lead to the creation of a third division. The current structure features two tiers in a promotion-relegation format, but a third tier next year - currently spoken about as 'Division 2' - would be for the smaller and/or northern-most clubs such as Alexandra, Kinglake, Thornton Eildon, Yea, and any other potential clubs that wish to join. Divisions 1 and 2 - or 'Premier' and 'Division 1' - would include the likes of Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Emerald, Gembrook Cockatoo, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Warburton Millgrove and Yarra Glen out of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges, in addition to the SEFNL clubs. It's therefore extremely unlikely that the SEFNL clubs would face any northern AFL Yarra Ranges clubs anytime soon. When it comes to implementing the proposed new competition, the presentation from the AFL Yarra Ranges stated that once a formal application is received, approval can be provided in a short time frame. It also stated that the whole new set-up could be in place for the first bounce of the 2019 season.
