Fire engulfs family's home

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A family's home was destroyed by a devastating pre-dawn blaze at Cranbourne East on 2 June. Eight people escaped the Thistlewood Place house unharmed, including four children, a woman in a wheelchair and a man on crutches.

An assembly of CFA trucks, including a ladder-platform applicance, were called out from Dandenong, Bayswater, Cranbourne, Frankston, Narre Warren and Clyde about 5.15am.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, stopping it from spreading into neighbouring yards.

Police concluded the fire was non-suspicious. A CFA spokesman said on 6 June that the fire's cause had yet to be determined.

A hub of dreams

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A draft for central Hampton Park’s radical transformation - included a long-mooted ‘main street’ - has been tabled.

The as-yet unfunded vision includes a $27 million community hub with a new community hall, library, offices and family and childrens centre.

The council plan, tabled at a 5 June meeting, also includes a landscaped east-west main street between the community hub and retail precinct.

The 1.4-hectare precinct - to be branded Hampton Park Central - will be designed to be a pedestrian-friendly village, including an outdoor dining mall.

The council has pledged that the new hall will retain the Arthur Wren name, and allocated space allocated for an art mural and Anzac memorial in the town square.

Councillor Wayne Smith assured the groups that “we won’t lose anything that we’ve got”.

“The aim is to have room for more.

“I’m confident everyone will come out happy because it’s a great thing for the community.”

Cr Smith expected the hub to be built within five years, depending on the flow of state and federal contributions.

The ‘main street’ - with a grid of northsouth streets - would fix a precinct that had developed in a “mish-mash method”.

“If it leads to nothing else, it will open up the area.”

Councillor Damien Rosario said the “revitalised” precinct would activate shops along the ‘main street’.

He hoped Casey could work with private landowners to “realise the dream together”.

The progress association and the community centre declined to comment.

The community precinct masterplan and central development plan are on public exhibition at casey.vic.gov.au.

Living in fear of ghosts

By Brendan Rees A Blind Bight resident has expressed his concern about some tall gum trees that loom over a community centre.

Bob O’Connell says four ghost gums regularly drop branches at the Blind Bight Community Centre, particularly over summer when limbs “explode on a dead still hot day.”

“There’s been quite a few limbs fall of the tree over the years; they’re going to get the kids,” he said.

“Ghost gum usually explodes on a dead still hot day, and that’s when they lose their limbs and come down in the playground.”

The centre serves as a central point for the coastal villages community including as a childcare service.

Casey council’s manager of city presentation David Richardson said the City of Casey will conduct an inspection of the trees at Blind Bight and undertake any remedial works required.

“In March 2017, Council engaged an arborist to inspect the trees in response to resident’s concerns. At this time the trees were found to be ‘low risk’,” he said.

Mr O’Connell, who volunteers at the centre doing maintenance work, says he’s pulled out some big branches out of the playground over the years.

He said the centre had an arborist assess the trees which were deemed safe but he was not convinced.

“It’ll be a hot summer’s day when the branches are going to fall down and I hope it just doesn’t hit one of the kids,” he said.

“We’ve brought it up a dozen times with the council that it wasn’t safe but they tend to think it is.”

Teen denied bail after stolen-car crash

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 14-year-old boy allegedly involved in a highspeed crash in a stolen car has been locked up in remand under the state’s recently- toughened bail laws.

At a childrens court hearing on 4 June, the boy was unable to prove “exceptional circumstances” - the highest bail test which is also reserved for accused murderers.

He had been on bail at the time over an alleged violent street robbery of a child in Cranbourne and an armed home invasion by a large group in Berwick.

About 1am on 3 June, the stolen Pulsar allegedly triggered a speed camera, ran a red light and slammed into the front-quarter of another car at the intersection of Princes Highway and South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South, the court heard.

The three occupants of the stolen car - including the 15-year-old alleged driver - alleg-

edly fled on foot.

They failed to assist a driver and passenger in the extensively-damaged second car left strewn in the intersection, the court heard.

There were no major injuries, the court was told.

On 13 February, the boy allegedly approached and demanded an i-Phone from a child at a bus stop in Cranbourne.

The victim fled - followed by two co-offenders onto a Cranbourne Transit bus.

Police claimed in court that the victim was repeatedly punched and kicked by the pair to the face and stomach as he called for help from the driver.

The assault continued until he obeyed the pair’s demands for his phone, the court was told.

The accused boy was allegedly arrested with the stolen phone at Cranbourne railway station. He denied robbing the child in a police interview, the court heard.

In April, he was allegedly part of a group of about 10 offenders who wielded two baseball bats and broke into a Berwick home occupied by a woman and a teen, the court was told.

The accused boy allegedly smashed outdoors CCTV cameras with a baseball bat.

A co-offender allegedly smashed a side bedroom window with another bat. The intruders climbed in through the hole and demanded payment of an alleged debt.

One of the victims was punched in the eye and hit to the back of his knee with a bat, the court heard.

The intruders allegedly stole cash and gaming items.

The boy later told police he didn’t know all of his co-offenders nor the victims and didn’t have prior knowledge of the break-in.

He followed instructions to smash the CCTV cameras so his co-offenders wouldn’t get “locked up”, the court heard.

A defence lawyer argued for bail on the ba-

sis of the boy’s age, likely supervision by Youth Justice, his attendance at school, no prior convictions and that he was set to face court within a week.

The magistrate said it got “nowhere near” meeting the ‘exceptional circumstances’ standard.

“I consider that cluster (of offending) to be very serious.”

The judge said the boy, if released, was an unacceptable risk to members of the public.

Earlier that day, another 14-year-old boy accused of being in the stolen car and taking part in the home invasion was bailed by a childrens court under the less-strict ‘compelling reasons’ test.

He was bailed on a night curfew at home and to be supervised by Youth Justice.

He was ordered not to associate with the co-accused in the stolen car.

Smart and resourceful

By Brendan Rees Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera has congratulated Barton Primary School for reducing its environmental impact through the Victorian Government's ResourceSmart Schools program.

The Cranbourne West school was awarded a one star certification for completing the required ResourceSmart Schools modules and meeting benchmarks for energy usage and waste reduction. Schools participating in the program are awarded up to five stars for completing modules in relation to water, waste, energy, biodiversity and provided with assistance from sustainability experts. "This certification recognises the great work of the dedicated teachers and staff at the school," Mr Perera said.

He also encouraged other schools in the region to sign up for the ResourceSmart Schools program if they haven't already.

"The program gives kids fantastic, hands on understanding of sustainability and the environment," he said.

Barton Primary School principal Andrew Felsinger said students had embraced environmentally-friendly practices.

"It's been a very successful program and instrumental in us reducing our waste and our landfill," he said. "It's been embraced by our parent group, they're very supportive of it, the kids love it and at assembly each week we count up the number of pieces of rubbish we have per grade and the school with the lowest average for the week ends up getting a Zero Hero trophy."

Mr Felsinger said the school encouraged students to avoid bringing food in wrappers and paper bags.

Students from Cranbourne's St. Peter's College have put their green thumbs to work to celebrate National Tree Day. Fifteen students teamed up with the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater to plant trees at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve on Saturday 26 May. St. Peter's College teacher Stephanie Lomas said the students worked with a sense of purpose to help rebuild habitat the area.

"Our students worked hard throughout the day to plant almost 1000 trees to help revegetate a small patch of Sedge-rich Eucalyptus camphora Swamp community and associated shrub thickets," she said. "This area is critical breeding habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater which is critically endangered and the lowland Leadbeater's Possum, which is also endangered." The students also enjoyed a nature walk and an exciting sighting of a Wedge-tailed Eagle as well as the Helmeted Honeyeater, Ms Lomas said. St. Peter's College west campus deputy principal David Hansen said the students found the experience highly rewarding.

"A huge congratulations to all involved and a very special thanks to the team at Friends of

Mum’s fight At only 40 years of age, Anthea Fernandes is desperately hoping she can see her two young daughters grow up.

In early May this year her family received the devastating news that the Hampton Park mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer - just two months after celebrating her 40th birthday.

The cancer has spread to her liver, lungs, abdomen, bowel and chest bone. There were no warning signs until suddenly in April she had a few weeks of extreme abdominal pain.

"When I got the diagnosis I was just blown away," she said.

"I've started some chemotherapy. At this point it might be 6-12 months treatment but because it's stage four it's more about there's no way the chemotherapy is going to kill all the cancer."

Anthea, who is a mother to two children, Leah, 6, and Chloe, 5, now faces the fight of her life with months of intense treatment.

And giving up is not an option for the Fernandes family who have launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $35,000. So far they have raised $28,945.

Funds will go towards her treatment, along with daily household bills to make the family's life easier.

"At this point it's more about buying me more time so if I get another year or two then I could possibly go in for some clinical trials, things like that," she said.

Since being diagnosed, Anthea says her normal routine has been "turned upside down."

"Just difficult to get help with the kids and my husband's working full-time so it gets a bit difficult for him."

She says she has been overwhelmed by the public's generosity.

"I felt a bit bad about it initially because I'm taking other people's money but everyone is more like this is our way of helping out," she said.

Casey CEO shortlist by July

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Advertisements for a new Casey Council chief executive have been posted three months after the long-serving Mike Tyler's sudden departure.

The position is currently being advertised by recruitment firm Davidson Executive Recruitment, Casey Council has confirmed.

Casey people and culture manager Fran Boyd said the council was on track to start interviews in July after a "suitable field" of candidates were identified.

Casey has been without a permanent CEO since its long-serving boss Mike Tyler announced his sudden departure from Casey on 22 February.

In the meantime, there has been a churning of acting CEOs - with council executives Sheena Frost, David Wilkinson and Steve Dalton spending time at the helm.

Recently, Cr Ablett said there's "no war" between councillors and the council's administration despite the departure of Mr Tyler and the first acting CEO Ms Frost within a month.

Mr Dalton, who managed the construction of Bunjil Place, was then appointed by councillors as acting chief executive.

While he took scheduled leave in April, Mr Wilkinson temporarily filled the position.

Davidson Executive Recruitment was selected at a special closed council meeting on 23 April.

Birthdays and biases I was disappointed to read Cam LoucadoWells' article titled "No Budget On Birthday".

It seemed to me a blatant attempt to discredit Susan Serey, who is a hardworking councillor and Liberal Candidate for the state seat Of Narre Warren South. There were several councillors who were unable to attend that meeting and yet you singled out Councillor Serey.

Sometimes people just can't attend certain events. It's part of life. There are two types of journalists Cam – those who faithfully and accurately report the news and those who seek to influence public opinion according to their particular personal biases. Which sort are you?

Also, in response to the Labour candidate's comments: given that Gary Maas, the union organiser, lives in St Kilda and has never had anything to do with the Casey Community, his comments about "respecting the local community" should be seen for what they are - hollow and hypocritical! Why can't the ALP preselect a local for once?

We are aware of neighbours who have experienced major storm water drainage blockage issues that have required expensive repair work and that the problems were caused by Council’s trees. We also resent having to act as Council’s unpaid garden labourers in the never ending quest to try and tidy up after these incredibly messy trees.

White Gums are a lovely tree, they are most suited to planting in large open spaces such as public parks and should not be foisted onto the nature strips of residential properties in suburban locations. The problems experienced by residents of Timbarra and the residents of Ludlow Court in the Panorama estate are serious and they are having a very negative impact on the ability of these people to enjoy their homes and gardens.

I would really welcome any assistance that you might be able to offer in dealing with the plight we find ourselves in, and would certainly welcome any support that the Star Group local media might be able to apply to Cardinia Shire in urging them to take action to deal with the detrimental effects created by the Wallengarra White Gums.

Tracey Ryan was shocked to discover she would have to pay the entire bill to fix her damaged fence even though it faces a public walkway.

The Cranbourne North resident says Casey Council won’t even chip in a cent to replace her fence which is part of a walkway between Godwin Crescent and Norford Court.

“I don’t expect them to for the whole fence because half of it is ours but they won’t even foot half the bill,” Ms Ryan said.

“They’re saying because its public land they don’t have to do it. I went into the fencing laws Victoria (website) and said if it’s on a reserve they don’t have to pay but it’s not a reserve, it’s a walkway.”

According to Ms Ryan, the walkway is used by school children whom she claims have pulled out fence palings over the years.

“The fence really needs replacing and I rang up the council to find out how I go about sending in the quotes and the lady said: ‘I’m sorry we don’t pay for it, you’re on your own,’” she said.

Casey Council’s manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said the City of Casey had been in contact with Ms Ryan and “understands their frustrations.

“Council officers have inspected the fence and in this instance the fence does not sit on Council occupied land, therefore unfortunately it does not qualify for any costs to be reimbursed by Council,” he said.

“The City of Casey has a Shared Cost Fencing Policy which stipulates what scenarios Council will cover costs. To view this, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au.”

Ms Ryan, who was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2010, labelled Casey Council as a “disgrace”.

Relay notches a major gong

Richmond’s flogging of Essendon on Saturday night was particularly sweet for ardent Tiger fan, Anthony Quirk.

Much to Anthony’s delight he was able to view every minute of the 71 point drubbing on his new 65 inch smart TV thanks to Star News Group and Harvey Norman.

Harvey Norman delivered the television to Anthony’s Narre Warren home on Saturday just in time for the live broadcast.

“It was fantastic to be able to watch the game on such a big screen, especially as I know a few Essendon supporters who used to give me hell,“ Anthony said.

Anthony saw the competition advertised in his copy of the Berwick News and entered “straight away“ online.

“I didn’t expect to win the TV but as the saying goes you’ve got to be in to win it.“ Anthony is a keen consumer of Star News both in print and online.

“I do read the paper. The stories are interesting and I like keep up to date with the local police and what they doing. I like to keep

myself informed about what’s going on with issues in the area.“ As well as football and other live sport, Anthony is looking forward to subscribing to Netflix now he has an internet-capable television.

Anthony has already sold his old TV, which he bought 15 years ago, to a workmate.

“My old TV was only 45 inches but was heavier than the new one. I’ve hooked (the new TV) up to internet and can hook up my ipad if I wish to see photos on a big screen.

“I watch movies than anything else. I have a decent DVD collection, box sets mainly. I am a great fan of the X-Files and science fiction shows like Babylon 5. “ Anthony thanked both Star News Group and Harvey Norman for running the competition.

“I really appreciate their fine gesture in offering the TV for the competition. Harvey Norman’s delivery was very prompt and quick. The manager (Grant Hammond) was also very nice and called to congratulate me.”

Cancer Council Victoria acknowledged the branch's efforts during a gala awards night on Saturday 2 June.

Committee member Brooke Hunter has revealed the group will again host a chicken wing eating clash at this year's relay for life, touting it to be bigger and better than 2017.

Last year, seven competitors stepped up to the plate and took centre stage, trying to best one another by devouring the most wings.

The initiative garnered a big crowd, and was a first for Victorian Relay branches.

Meals go further The Cranbourne Food Truck will now be able to help more community members in need, thanks to a $5,000 grant from waste and water management company SUEZ. Presenting the cheque to members of the Cranbourne Food Truck on May 28, State General Manager for Victoria, Kelvin Sargent, said that the company was pleased to support such a worthwhile and necessary community service.

"The Cranbourne Food Truck is relied upon by many in the local community for nourishment and the basic daily supplies we often take for granted," she said.

"SUEZ is proud to assist the Cranbourne

Regional Uniting Church to continue their good works through the service and help more people get back on their feet."

Cranbourne Food Truck Secretary Christine Marsh said the much-needed funding will extend the service's impact in the local community.

"This grant enables us to continue our work of providing free food and fellowship for the needy and disadvantaged of our community," she said.

"We will be spending the funds on fresh ingredients for our cooks to provide hot nourishing meals, to maintain our supply of nonperishable goods for food parcels, and on

maintenance to our truck to ensure we can continue serving our community in safety."

Now in its fourth year, the SUEZ Community Grants program has donated more than $575,000 in funding to community organisations and projects across Australia that help communities and the environment thrive.

Operated by the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church, the service operates after hours four nights per week.

It serves more than 3,000 nourishing hot meals each year across the area and provides fresh fruit and vegetables, groceries and toiletries locals in need. It also offers companionship to the isolated, and warm blankets

A Cranbourne East man and woman are expected to be charged over allegedly assaulting a bus driver in Cranbourne in January.

Police say the 40-year-old female driver was assaulted at a stop on Cranbourne-Frankston Road on Thursday, 25 January after telling a young boy that he couldn't come on board the bus with his bike.

A man and woman then got on the bus and allegedly assaulted her.

She received minor injuries, police say.

A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were interviewed by police.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region This month Grow focuses on exporting. Rebecca Skilton talks to the owners of Gaia Skin Natural about their secrets on successfully navigating the complex, frustrating but ultimately rewarding challenge of taking their products to the world.

Natural growth leads way After discovering her son had eczema at just eight weeks of age, Michelle Vogrinec embarked on skin care blending and aromatherapy studies to begin creating her own herbal infusions.

Now, 18 years on, Michelle and husband Simon export their Gaia Skin Natural products to over 24 countries - and they’re still growing.

Based in Hallam, Gaia Skin Naturals caters for the whole family with products specifically created for babies, men, women and women’s pregnancy and breastfeeding journeys.They produce 42 products across 31 lines and four brands, are sold in over 5500 pharmacies, health food, baby stores, leading grocery shops and online outlets, continue to be manufactured in Australia (excluding their Bamboo Baby Wipes) and are continuously increasing their international customer base.

So how did the Vogrinecs’ take their homemade remedy worldwide?

“It’s an interesting journey because for us, export was never the focus of the business. For us, it was being able to provide a quality product to our customers,” Simon, who is now the General Manager of Gaia, said.

“Around 2002 we went to market and started knocking on doors of pharmacies. We got into about three or four hundred in a very short period of time and we were successful in enlisting a couple of big chains.

“We started becoming a little bit more wellknown in the marketplace and (around 2003) we put together the website. Once we did that we started getting inquiries come in in relation to export.”

While Michelle and Simon were successful in establishing a Australian brand profile and admit they entered the marketplace at a time when ‘the natural health area was becoming more and more prevalent,’ Simon does acknowledge that if he had his time again, he would tackle the export process differently.

“Export has its own advances and challenges,” Simon said.

“In the early days, we were everything to everybody and jumped on every opportunity, which then resource wise, pulls you different places and can put strain and pressure on. So now we pick a few markets, we go in and we actually understand the demographic of who we’re selling to.

“For us it’s about sustainability; going in and capturing the market and understanding what’s involved in the marketplace before pulling back so we can strategize and think, ‘okay, what’s required in the investment of this?’

Whether it’s financial wise, resource wise, marketing wise, trade visits - there’s a whole heap of things that we have to think about as we go forward.

“Because there’s no point going into a market place if you can’t sustain it. There’s no point in going in if you can’t resource it and you can’t build your brand. Otherwise you’re here today

Understandably, the export process exponentially increased the Vogrinecs’ workload with different marketplaces obtaining different rules and regulations. However, the Gaia message is kept as uniform as possible and product formula is unwavering.

Which is why Gaia will not sell businessto-business within China; a country which requires cosmetics to be tested on animals prior to distribution.

“China’s a really interesting one,” Simon said.

“Our company stance has always been that we won’t test on animals and we won’t allow our product to be tested on animals.

“But one third of the population is in China.

It’s a massive, massive market ... and what’s happened over the past couple of years is that things have changed (there). The consumer in China wants quality products and they have issues with domestic produced products. They don’t - trust I think is probably the right word

- that what they’re buying in their marketplace is always quality.”

Simon explained that consumers in China are becoming increasingly attracted to Australia’s ‘clean, green eco-friendly’ reputation, thus placing greater trust in Australian products such as Gaia.

And while China’s government is yet to change their stance on animal-testing, businesses like Gaia can reach the Chinese marketplace as long as it’s through a business-to-consumer exchange rather than a business-to-business interaction.

Within China, business-to-consumer exchanges have become increasingly popular following the rise of initiatives such as one-day online flash sales and bonded warehouses, which offer channels for ‘temporary exemptions for tariffs and other regulatory requirements which apply to conventional international trade.’

“We can get into China but not through our normal distribution model,” Simon said.

The online area has been fantastic in being able to gain access to the market and be able to service the consumer need, but we’re not able to step through it and actually build the business properly.

“At some point we’ll be able to move into the China marketplace, but we’re not going to change our ethical standing point” .And any advice for Australian businesses looking towards exporting?

“I would say you need to understand what’s involved in export because there are big risks in there,” Simon said.

“People say, ‘oh that’s easy, you put it on a boat and you ship it.’ Yes you do, but you have to make sure everything’s right. There are risks.

“So minimising those risks, understanding what you’re getting yourself into and the questions of how, what and why you’re doing it are really important.”

WHAT’S ON Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue.

Councils back soccer bid

By Nick Creely It’s now a year since the Team 11 pitch materialised at a 1 June launch event in the heart of Greater Dandenong.

The south-east of Victoria has united as one behind the bid to push for an A-League and W-League admission into the national competition, with 12 local councils now pledging support for the bid.

On Friday 1 June, the three councils driving the bid - the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia - have re-committed to the cause by re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that kick-started the process 12 months ago.

However, those MoUs have been bolstered

by Letters of Supports from surrounding councils including: Frankston City, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Knox City, City of Monash, Baw Baw Shire, Bass Coast Shire, South Gippsland Shire, Latrobe City and Wellington Shire.

These letters were included in Team 11’s Expression of Interest document submitted to Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Deloitte last week. The Letters of Support are indicative of the widespread interest in Team 11’s bid in the south-east of Victoria.

City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the re-signing of the MoU was important in the commitment to bringing the Team 11 bid to life.

“The A-League, W-League and Youth Team bid is progressing very well,” he said.

“The three councils are working very hard together. We committed to this 12 months ago but have re-signed this MoU to make sure that we are all working together to bring a club to the south-east.”

This sentiment was echoed by City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, who believes it is a signifi-

And more importantly, the residents of the south-east bid are right behind the push for ALeague entry, as Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross explained.

“When the consortium goes out looking for funding to develop the project further, people need to know that the local government authorities are right behind the bid and the

residents in those areas are right behind it,” he said.

“Councils being the most direct link to the community know what the residents are after and this sporting project will undoubtedly bring activity to the south-east like nothing else.”

These Cavaliers are on a roll as they make history

By Russell Bennett The Casey Cavaliers' under-12 girls basketball team has made history as the first group of girls from the association ever to be invited to participate in the prestigious National Junior Classic, held this Queen's Birthday weekend.

The event is a Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (MUVJBL) tournament that accepts the top eight teams in each age group from Victoria, as well as an additional eight interstate teams.

Essentially, invited teams are considered to be the best teams in their age groups across the country.

The future is looking incredibly bright at the Cavaliers, with a host of other teams from the association following suit and also entering into the higher ranks of the MUVJBL competition.

Leah Cornell and Emilija Dakic can't wait for this weekend's tournament, as two key components of the Casey side.

They and their team mates are eager to show what they're made of on the big stage.

"We've really been working as a team - it's not just one person doing everything," Leah explained.

Emilija added that the particularly tightknit group was constantly working on improving its weaknesses under the watchful eyes of head coach and assistant coach Michael and Ashlea Feldman.

Both girls said their coach Michael encourages them to be the best they can be, and that Ashlea knows how hard it is to play at a high level having played so recently.

They both love representing the Cavaliers, and for their coaches.

"Michael is trying to make us the best basketballers we can be," Emilija added.

Leah said the enormity of the side's achievement in making the tournament had just started to fully sink in.

"You go against teams from different states so making the Classic means we're one of the best teams in the country," she said.

For his part, as coach of the team, Michael acknowledged that he "probably underestimated" the magnitude of what his side had accomplished so far, and added he can't wait for the girls to show what they can do at the tournament.

"I think we can be very competitive over the weekend, so I'm really excited about that and really excited to see the girls perform," he said.

"If the girls bring their A game, we'll be very competitive."

Michael said his group never ceases to amaze him.

"They surprise me nearly every week with their understanding of the game," he said.

"They understand where to be and what to do. I tell them a set play and they go out and do it.

"This bunch of girls just all want to be there.

They all come together as a team and want to learn so it makes my job a lot easier when they want to do that.

"They've been amazing, and the way they've been able to adapt to me has been fantastic.

"I think sometimes we underestimate these girls - they'll be going home, studying the games and what they've been doing, and some of them really get upset with themselves when they make little mistakes. They go back and think about how they can improve, and that's a real bonus for these girls because at that age group it's such a great quality to have."

The Casey under-12 girls have been drawn in Group C alongside the Forestville Eagles, Frankston, and Canberra.

Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League general manager John Hilton said the 2018 National Junior Classic will raise the bar yet again as the best 128 sides descend on Melbourne for the high-calibre contest.

"It's great to see teams from across Victoria and Australia getting ready for this year's National Junior Classic," he said.

"For the best teams across Victoria, the Classic is the perfect opportunity for our own to showcase their talents in an elite tournament environment."

Then the match sealer came, a curler around his body from Shane Scanlon gave the Magpies enough breathing space to close out a tense final five minutes.

"The third quarter we played our way and came in a point up at three quarter time, and the opposition only kicked two points the week before in the final quarter, so we worked on the fact we were pretty fit," Shinners said.

"It (Berwick's last quarter) wasn't the main topic of conversation at the huddle, but when the players were getting in position I said to them they needed to move the ball quickly and run hard, because they didn't score in the last quarter last week, so we needed to capitalize on their confidence levels, and if you score early, you plant a seed in the opposition's head.

"It was one of the best local games of footy in a long while, it was pretty physical and it wasn't easy to get a kick."

Down at Starling Road, a fast starting Cranbourne disposed of Officer, 8.3 (51) to 18.18 (126).

The second placed Eagles continued on with their blistering form, this time against an Officer side that is struggling to make an impact against the competition heavyweights.

While it was always a long shot that the Kangaroos would trump an Eagles team fresh off an unbelievable comeback win over Berwick, it was expected that the home side could stick with Steve O'Brien's group for at least three quarters.

With Marc Holt (five goals) back to his absolute best and debutant Nick Russo (two goals) impressing, the Eagles put on a clinic with their speed, opening up a 63-point half time lead.

"He (Holt) was dominant, I think he kicked 5.6, so he could have really filled his boots - he kept working at it and got his rewards at the end of the day," Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien said of Holt's performance.

Worryingly for the Kangaroos, the Eagles have been a dominant second half side throughout 2018 so far, but fought admirably to kick six goals in the third term before being held goalless in the final term in a bitterly disappointing last quarter.

O'Brien said a fast start was pivotal after finishing with such a flurry last week against Berwick.

"It was probably our key focus point during the week, to be honest - we wanted to get off to a fast start, and try and take the game away from Officer as early as possible," he said.

"We were able to get the game on our terms very early in the piece, and that started in the midfield, they played some accountable footy, and we were able to impact the scoreboard."

But the only negative is a 30 minute lapse in the third quarter, in which the Kangaroos managed to kick six goals to one. O'Brien said it could have been for a number of factors.

While it was not a grand final or a match that defined both clubs, the intensity, passion and skill level will instantly make this game a classic.

In the end, the Magpies notched up a seventh straight win - 13.10 (88) to 10.18 (78) - to remain undefeated.

In a first half owned by Stewart Kemperman's men, the Wickers simply couldn't put away the home side after booting 2.6 in the second term and taking in a 16-point lead.

The Wickers got the fast start, booting five first quarter goals to jump out to an 18-point lead, with the Magpies struggling to adjust to the rampant pressure being applied - particularly through the middle of the ground where Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and Travis Tuck were able to exert control over the stoppages.

Then came a typical, no fuss response from the Magpies, who clawed their way back to life in a third quarter of pure grit.

While star Wicker Bryce Rutherford started strongly with a couple of early clearances, the Magpies got the game on their terms, running hard from the back half and catching the visitors flat footed.

Despite a goal from champion Michael Riseley, who floated forward with poise and snagged a goal against the tide, a truly incredible team goal starting off with some extraordinary piece of dare by Hayden Stagg and finished by Michael Collins kicked the home side into gear.

Mitch Cox roared in excitement after booting yet another clutch goal, and after a completely dominant last ten minutes the home side got their noses in front by just one solitary point at the final break.

The crowd was packed to their rafters, throwing their voices behind every bump, kick and mark, and the roar was deafening each time a player got a skerrick of open space in a thrilling final term with many twists.

After last week's fade away in the final term against Cranbourne, the pressure was fixed firmly on the reigning premiers, who were encountering a home side charging hard after two early goals.

The Wickers urgently needed a lift against the almighty momentum being built, and they got one, namely through Michael Riseley, who helped set Tom Brennan on a path to goal that cut that margin back to seven.

Narre's desperation at the contest was pivotal, moving the ball forward by whatever means possible.

With just six minutes to go and with the score just five points and the tension reverberating across the ground, the Wickers almost made magic happen.

By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely The pieces are falling into place and, gradually, they're making up the AFL Greater East puzzle.

All eight South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) clubs have now given a clear indication of where their futures may lie following a dramatic week of local football and netball developments.

After Officer and Beaconsfield made it clear that it was their preference to join AFL Yarra Ranges' AFL Greater East divisional football and netball set-up, Cranbourne announced that - ideally - it would join the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) from 2019.

Since then, Doveton, Berwick, TooradinDalmore, Narre Warren, and Pakenham have all given a clear indication of which directions they wish to head.

Through a statement on the Doveton Facebook page, president Aaron Henwood said it was the recommendation of the club executive for the Doves to affiliate with AFL Greater East from 2019. The club is scheduled to hold its special general meeting at Robinson Reserve on 26 June, at which point members will vote to formally decide its future.

Berwick president Glen Gambetta, meanwhile, said his club was also "leaning towards" AFL Greater East citing its eagerness to keep its netball and football arms together.

"We would like to see this region have some representation in Eastern (the Eastern Football League), and while we would like to potentially be there, we will lose netball forever," he said.

"We'll make a recommendation on 12 June but at this stage we are leaning towards AFL Greater East."

Along similar lines, Narre Warren president Stuart Stephenson said his club would also vote on 12 June.

"The expectation is that we'll vote towards AFL Greater East," he said.

"We've been strong on retaining our football and netball clubs into the future."

Pakenham president Darren Sidebottom was much more succinct, simply saying that the Lions had two options to consider - Yarra Ranges (AFL Greater East) or the Gippsland 30 STAR NEWS

Tooradin-Dalmore's Greg Kelly, meanwhile, made it clear that his club sees its future in West Gippsland.

"As it stands, we have applied for West Gippsland and we've had several meetings with the competition, and they've been very positive," he said.

"They (AFL Gippsland) are re-structuring and their whole game has changed.

"We are a small country town; we simply can't compete with the Berwicks, Narre Warrens and Beaconsfields, and it's simply not fair. We are throwing everything we can at this - we've put the paperwork in and are just waiting for the review to come through."

Officer became the first piece of the puzzle to seemingly slot into place late last month when its committee met to formally endorse a transfer to AFL Yarra Ranges - a motion that the News believes was passed unanimously.

Officer was the first SEFNL club to publically announce its position and has since written to AFL Yarra Ranges to officially commence the process of a move.

Officer Senior Football Club president Nick McLennan told the News that his club's decision was one that hadn't been taken lightly, "but one which we know is best for the future of our football club and football in the region".

"One of the driving factors behind this decision was also the future of the ROC Netball Club, as it is very much our desire to ensure that both our football and netball clubs can continue to coexist and play our home games together," he said. "We think this option presents a great opportunity for both our respective clubs."

In a statement provided to the News, club president Gerry Kelly said: "Due to the upcoming demise of the SEFNL competition at the end of 2018, the Cranbourne Football Club has sought and gained permission from AFL South East to negotiate with the MPNFL and member clubs to join their league in season 2019."

The News understands that AFL Greater East is still in the frame for the Eagles as a contingency plan should the MPNFL clubs vote against them coming across.

But Cranbourne believes that the MPNFL offers its best long-term option for playing in a competitive and stable competition.

Kelly said his club had been on a long journey to this point, taking an "exhaustive look" at each of its options - including the Eastern Football League, Yarra Ranges, and the MPNFL. "We plan to speak to all of the MPNFL clubs in the coming month and we hope they'll be accepting of us because of our geographic situation, but also to help them form a third division," he added.

"We'd love to be part of the MPNFL - that's where we see our future."

Beaconsfield, meanwhile, had a committee meeting on Tuesday of last week and voted in favour of a move to AFL Greater east after much soul-searching by president Troy Robinson and other key figures from within the club.

"It's a massive pressure valve release for us," Robinson said.

"It's been a frustrating topic for the past 12 months, so to have a resolution allows us to go through the formal application process, and it's a massive relief for us.

"We're excited that we can finally move on to the future now - it was a 99.9 per cent vote in favour of."

Robinson said the club did its due diligence and considered a move to the powerful EFL but opted for the Yarra Ranges proposal for one major reason - a factor that overrode everything.

"The key link strategically is that we retained a relationship with netball, and that's the most underpinning and overwhelming factor for us as a club," he said.

"We have a very strong relationship with our netball club and that was a massive desire to retain that, and a critical ingredient was to go in a competition that could accommodate both football and netball together."

The club is now at the stage of formally applying to join AFL Yarra Ranges, but Robinson did admit that the long-term future of his club could well be elsewhere.

"Is it the long term the right choice? Crystal ball, we can't tell at this point - we have a

massive desire to be involved in the West Gippsland competition, that's our future flavour of choice," Robinson said.

"We want to pursue that model - we want to play the highway, the Garfields, Nar Nar Goons, the Bunyips, Warragul and Drouin, and we believe there's a massive opportunity if the AFL gets smart, re-zones and looks at the football model properly.

"We believe that's still the right option for our football, but it's not on the table right now, but we'll definitely be showing interest in the coming years."

The AFL Yarra Ranges' presentation to the SEFNL clubs - centred on what's set to become the AFL Greater East competition - clearly made a strong impression when it was rolled out.

It clearly set out the proximity of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges clubs to those currently in the SEFNL, with the travel times between them contrary to popular belief.

Should SEFNL clubs join the AFL Yarra Ranges competition from 2019, that would lead to the creation of a third division. The current structure features two tiers in a promotion-relegation format, but a third tier next year - currently spoken about as 'Division 2' - would be for the smaller and/or northern-most clubs such as Alexandra, Kinglake, Thornton Eildon, Yea, and any other potential clubs that wish to join. Divisions 1 and 2 - or 'Premier' and 'Division 1' - would include the likes of Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Emerald, Gembrook Cockatoo, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Warburton Millgrove and Yarra Glen out of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges, in addition to the SEFNL clubs.

It's therefore extremely unlikely that the SEFNL clubs would face any northern AFL Yarra Ranges clubs anytime soon.

When it comes to implementing the proposed new competition, the presentation from the AFL Yarra Ranges stated that once a formal application is received, approval can be provided in a short time frame. By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 8 Noble Park stamped its authority over Rowville with a dominant second quarter to set up the win at Pat Wright Senior Oval on Saturday.

The Bulls had 12 individual goal kickers on their way to a strong 17.16 (118) to 11.17 (83) win. Kyle Martin and Jackson Sketcher were superb for the Bulls, while Bailey Lambert and Hudson Thomas booted three goals each.

For Rowville, Alex Frawley and Ziggie Alwan were in everything.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 8 While Devon Meadows stuck with Hastings for a half, they were overpowered by the Blues in a seven goal to two second half at Glover Reserve, 9.10 (64) to 16.16 (112).

The Panthers got the fast break to lead by two points at quarter time, but the Blues - led

superbly by Luke Hewitt (four goals) got the momentum back to take a narrow lead at half time.

Despite the usual fight by the likes of Mat Fletcher, Josh Stewart, Gavin Kerr and Arthur Churchill, the Panthers stood no match for the class of the Blues in the second half.

Pearcedale, meanwhile, were belted by Red Hill at Tractor Park, 4.10 (34) to 21.13 (139).

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 8 Keysborough dropped its second game in a row - falling to Highett, 6.7 (43) to 9.10 (64).

The Burras were leading by 17 points at half time, but were overrun as they could only muster one goal in the second half. Cory Hargreaves and James Anwyl were best for Keysborough in a disappointing day.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 7 Springvale Districts got over the line in a great battle against Ashwood, 6.4 (40) to 7.8 (50). Nathan Brown and George Angelopoulos were integral as Springvale Districts were able to hold Ashwood out.

Hampton Park was simply ruthless against Block Rock, claiming a massive 22.19 (151) to 2.8 (20) win at Robert Booth Reserve.

Nathan Carver and Shannon Henwood (four goals each) were dominant up forward for Hampton Park, while Michael Henry and Jackson Philpin controlled the game.

Endeavour Hills overpowered Hallam from the outset and posted a percentage-boosting win, 3.4 (22) to 26.14 (170).

Daniel Morrison was the star of the day, booting 10 majors for the Falcons. Sam

McLean slotted six of his own and Daniel Batson was impressive in the midfield battle.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 8 Lyndhurst took care of business against Sandown, 3.11 (29) to 15.8 (98). Jarryd McGrath (five goals) and Charlie Gardiner (four goals) were dynamic up forward for the Lightning.

Dandenong was outplayed by Frankston as the Dolphins ran amok, winning 19.30 (144) to 5.4 (34). Michael Lawrence and Cameron Riley were best in what was a dirty day for the Redlegs.

Carrum Patterson Lakes came out firing against Cerberus and were never troubled, winning 14.14 (98) to 4.4 (28). Shane Dunn and Brenton Rafferty were superb for Carrum Patterson Lakes.

Meanwhile, Lyndale scored a big win over Moorabbin, 12.9 (81) to 22.9 (141). Moses Faaola and Trent Day (five goals each) were dominant up forward for the Pumas.

Cavaliers keep in touch with big win

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers made it three wins from four outings in Round 11 Big V basketball action on the weekend.

The State Championship Men made light work of Blackburn in a dominant display on both ends of the court, winning 104-69.

With five players scoring in double figures, the Cavs came to play and were far too good for the Vikings.

Raheem Lemons was his usual dominant self, recording 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Matt Donlan was electric from deep, draining five triples on his way to posting 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

The win sees Casey (7-6) return to above .500 for the first time since round five and keeps them in touch with the logjam between third and sixth.

The Division 1 Women continued their red hot form and made it six wins on the trot with a smothering defensive display against the Chelsea Gulls. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

After an even first quarter, the Cavs turned up the defensive intensity in the second and held the Gulls to a measly three points for the quarter.

From there, the Cavs were never truly troubled again, running out 42-64 winners. Tarryn Wilkin (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Tanarly Hood (14 rebounds, 11 points, 4 assists) were tremendous.

Casey's six-game winning streak has them placed second with an impressive 12-2 record.

The Youth League 2 Women remain undefeated after 11 rounds, taking all before them, including proving too strong for the fourthplaced Blackburn Vikings on Sunday afternoon.

After a tight battle for three quarters, the Cavs dominated the final term to run out 7590 winners.

Lauren Tuplin (21 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists) was phenomenal on both ends of the court, while Peta Rhodes (22 points) topscored.

Unfortunately, the Youth League 1 Men

were agonizingly close to the Geelong Supercats at home on Sunday, but ultimately fell, 90-92 Supercat Josiah King blocked Oyiti Amum's attempt at a game-winning triple in the final seconds to cap off a dramatic finish to a high quality game of basketball.

Despite the heartbreaking finish, Amum (25 points, 8 rebounds) starred for the Cavs and was well supported by Mitch Gooiker (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Alex Bazzucchini (10 points, 7 rebounds).

The loss, their fourth in a row, has Casey sitting eighth with a 5-8 record.

With no BigV this long weekend, the Cavs return to the hardwood the following week.

The Youth League 2 Men will battle Sunbury at home on June 16 from 8pm, before heading to Bendigo a day later. The State Championship Men will also hit the road to face Knox on June 17.

Meanwhile, a Youth League 2 and Division 1 Women double-header tips off from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium on June 17.
