No Maccas ... yet

By Kath Gannaway The Golden Arches - McDonalds - will not be the new welcome to Healesville ... at least not under Planning Application 2017/93.

The application which seeks a planning permit to build a petrol station with convenience store and food premises on part of 17-25 Maroondah Highway (known as 'the old sawmill site'), has created a social media storm, following the erection on the site last week of the formal permit application notice.

The application to Yarra Ranges Council for the $1.9M development would pave the way for a corner of the land, which has an existing permit for an extensive redevelopment of the entire site, to be sold off for a petrol station.

The sleeping community opposition to the incursion of a McDonalds-type fast food outlet in Healesville was reawakened by the perceived possibility that the 'convenience store/ food premises' could be part of the development and has played out on facebook under the slogan of NO McDonalds/NO Inappropri-

ate Developments in Healesville.

The pros and cons of multi-national fast food outlets on the town have been passionately debated on facebook with problems of litter, the impact on established cafes and food businesses and the visual amenity of the prime entrance to the town vs the potential benefits of youth employment and a lash-back against an 'anti-progress' stance.

The name of the applicant even led to speculation that it was gaming and hotel giant Zagames behind the application - an equally fanciful response according to Ed Zagami, a town planner with Planning Studio On Peel who is acting for the petrol station developer behind the application.

Mr Zagami told the Mail that neither a McDonalds-type fast food, nor a Zagames, was possible under the application.

"Our client develops petrol station so he is interested in purchasing this land from the existing owner (Joseph Alesci) who has the original permit," Mr Zagami said.

"It is a condition (allowable) on the parent

permit over all of the land. Our client wants to run the petrol station component and is not interested in all the other uses, so we sought application from council to amend the existing permit to separate this (corner) site from the total land so he could get on and build a petrol station," he explained.

"The Council said they would prefer a separate permit, so we have applied for the same proposal, albeit the building design has been tweeked."

Yarra Ranges Council confirmed to the Mail that a McDonalds-type fast-food outlet was not an option saying that the amended application seeks to alter the canopy and presentation of the service station on the site.

"The building size is reduced in the application, with a small height increase to a wall on the site," said Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, adding that the site has a current planning permit, which was approved by VCAT in 2016.

"The station on the site is proposed as a "convenience shop", which would allow sale

of pre-packaged food, drinks and other convenience goods, along with the potential for hiring convenience goods," Ms Wastie explained.

"It is not proposed that the site will be used as a "convenience restaurant", which allows for preparation and sale of food and drink for immediate consumption both in and away from the premises."

The site was subdivided into two lots following the 2016 VCAT approval to separate the service station from the rest of the site.

"The service station application is new, but the proposal is very similar to the previouslyapproved development for the site and does not change the definition of the site for its use as a convenience shop," Ms Wastie said.

He said there was some opposition initially to having a day dedicated to Aboriginal service men and woman.

"Some said 'we have Anzac Day', but it has been growing every year and spread to every state in Australia, and it's been acknowledged that Auntie Dot and myself started it in 2006 from Healesville," Mr Halim said.

He said it was important to say to the world that Healesville started something that changed history.

"We are hoping now that it continues to gain momentum and that all RSLs and other organisations will come on board."

The contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women to the defence of Australia was honoured on Thursday, 31 May, with the 2018 Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Service at The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.

The service is organised each year by the Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Committee (VARC).

In a moving ceremony whose beginnings started in 2006 when Auntie Dot Peters and then president of Healesville RSL, Sam Halim, initiated the first remembrance service, the service this year particularly paid tribute to Australia's WWI Indigenous soldiers.

In the centenary era of WWI, a history of Aboriginal participation, and loss, was presented stating that around 900 Aboriginal Australians served in WWI, including 80 Victorian Aboriginal men.

At least 11 Victorian Aboriginal soldiers were killed in action, or fatally wounded.

Guest speaker was Ricky Morris, a former sergeant of the Australian Army, is a Gunditjmara man who served in Afghanistan and East Timor.

A descendent of warriors and soldiers, who has the distinction of having had more family members on active service in the military than any other Australian family.

The commemoration included a performance by the Worawa Aboriginal College choral group, a welcome by Auntie Dot as chair of the Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Committee and an address by Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Natalie Hutchins MP. Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place Choir was supported by Lilydale High School Vocal Ensemble and Casey Grammar School Choir in singing 'We Are One'.

Mr Halim, who is also President of Healesville Rotary, and a founding member of the VARC, also spoke.

Grant for China market

by Derek Schlennstedt With Australian wine exports to China surging beyond records, vineyards in the Yarra Valley are making the most of a $100,000 grant to target popular Chinese social media platforms such as WeChat.

Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association (YVWGA) bid successfully for a share in the $7.4million International Wine Tourism funding pool, which includes $2.8 million from the International Wine Tourism Competitive Grants Program.

The YVWGA will improve existing Chinese language websites and invest in Chinese social media platforms to improve the region's digital marketing to China.

YVWGA has been allocated $100,000 in matched funding for its $200,000 Yarra Valley China ready project which will target potential Chinese visitors and aims to increase visitation and spend in the Yarra Valley.

CEO of Wine Yarra Valley, Caroline Evans, said that the "outlook in China for Australian wine is phenomenal".

"China has become Australia's biggest inbound tourist market," she said.

"Securing this funding ensures we can by working closely with the team at Yarra Ranges Tourism, deliver two key elements of the Yarra Valley China Ready Project ... both supporting local businesses to be ready to deliver excellent experiences to Chinese visitors and also to create and execute a marketing campaign to attract visitors to our region."

Each year hundreds of thousands Chinese tourists travel to the Yarra Valley both with the intention of seeing its splendour and tasting award-winning wines.

That explosion in tourism has been felt and seen by local wineries, with many even employing bilingual staff to improve their experience.

"It's quite a strong presence and is definitely something we try and be on the front foot with to engage with them.

"The last three years we've got a real demand in our wines from the Chinese market ... we try to be pro-employment of Chinese

The aim is to lift wine exports to $3.5 billion a year by 2021-22 and lure an extra 40,000 international tourists to leading wine regions such as the Yarra Valley.

Ms Evans, said the grant, was a significant boost to the wine industry in the Yarra Valley and would immensely benefit wineries in the region.

"It's a significant boost to our ability to market to this audience because we haven't really had money available, so being able to do this collectively is a huge boost for the region," she said.

IN BRIEF Black spur roll over On Friday 1 June an Iveco van was travelling south along Black Spur when it rolled down an embankment to avoid a truck.

Police told the mail the van had just passed Dom Dom Saddle when a large truck approaching from the opposite direction cut the corner.

As a result the Iveco van attempted to avoid the truck by driving on to the curb of the road, and has then rolled down an embankment and turned on it's side.

The drive was uninjured and police, SES and CFA attended the scene.

The road was blocked for approximately 45 minutes while a heavy haulage truck recovered the Iveco van.

Healesville burglary

On 29 May, an Australia Post employee was attacked by a large dog in Yarra Glen.

The employee was delivering a parcel to an address on King Street, Yarra Glen when the owners of the property, who went to collect it, opened the door and the dog rushed out.

Police report that the dog, which was a declared dangerous dog, managed to get past the owners and rushed out through the front door.

Police said The Australia Post employee did not sustain any serious injuries or puncture wounds.

Drug driving Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol identified two possible drug drivers on Sunday 27 May. A 36-year-old male from Montrose was pulled over for driving without a licence, on Fortuna Avenue in Croydon.

He underwent a preliminary oral fluid test and tested positive for an illicit substance.

The driver also had prior convictions and as a result his motor vehicle was impounded for a month at a cost of $878.50.

Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda Following on from a previous article I wrote in February of this year, on the lack of evidence for common knee orthopaedic surgeries, my colleagues and I decided to investigate evidence around treatment for common shoulder ailments - shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) and rotator cuff injury.

What we found was just as startling.

Acromioplasties and sub-acromial decompressions have been performed regularly in Australia over the previous thirty years for SIS. It is the most common type of shoulder pain we see, yet often wrongly diagnosed as bursitis or rotator cuff pathology.

The reason for this is that SIS is often coupled with these conditions - the bursa and one of the rotator cuff tendons being jammed against bone is the impingement itself, yet the bursa and rotator cuff tendons are not always the source of pain.

In fact, one mid 1990s study of 97 people across all age groups without shoulder pain found that 34 per cent had rotator cuff tears, and 15 per cent were full-thickness tears.

Similar studies show bursitis (inflamed bursae) in upto 60 per cent of men and 80 per cent of women, regardless of symptoms.

Causative factors are often postural in nature, specifically slouched upper back postures and/or weak scapula muscles.

Acromioplasties, where part of the overlying bone is removed, and sub-acromial decompressions are performed in order to reduce pressure in the space just above the shoulder joint where the impingement occurs.

Yet, there is literally no evidence that these two procedures, which cost the public and private purse millions of dollars each year plus time-off-work costs to the economy, have any greater effect than conservative treatment (physiotherapy and exercise).

In fact, corticosteroid injections for pain relief (if required) combined with a tailored physiotherapy exercise program are reported to have greater outcomes than surgery even in severe cases.

And those who don't improve with conservative treatment also do not get better with surgery.

Evidence for rotator cuff tendon repairs is somewhat greyer: surgical opinion for rotator cuff tears should be considered only for a healthy population under 50 years old that require high level use of the upper body, and only for tears greater than 3cm in length, and always after attempting at least three months of conservative management first.

Bear in mind that the reported rate of retear of repaired tendons is anywhere from 50 - 80 per cent depending on which studies you read, which is pretty alarming considering that it is often a 12 to 18-month rehabilitation period to return to full strength post surgery.

It pays to be informed, and the current trend appears to be just that - patients seeking the best evidence for treatment for their problems and taking ownership of their choices.

Dreamtime at the G

By Kath Gannaway Healesville's Indigenous community was well represented at the celebrated Dreamtime at The 'G match between Essendon and Richmond on Saturday night, 2 June.

Worawa Aboriginal College, Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA) and members of the Wurundjeri community took part in the event that followed on from The Long Walk as part of the round which was in honour of Indigenous footballer Sir Doug Nicholls.

Eight Worawa Aboriginal College students took centre stage, under lights, before the record crowd of more than 81,000, umpiring the half-time Auskick game.

The girls are six weeks into an umpiring course with the AFL Academy which Worawa has been part of for the past four years.

They had full control of the Auskick games around the boundary, on the field and in the goals and when the Mail spoke with the girls before the big game, there was a mix of confidence, excitement and a touch of nervous anticipation as they prepared for their rare opportunity to umpire at 'The 'G'.

Worawa was also be represented in the main game with the umpire's shirts featuring a design by former Worawa students, Zephie Neil and Mariana Gurrawiwi.

Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson performed the Welcome to Country, introducing the cultural performances which he said would symbolise the spirit of understanding, respect, resilience, healing and reconciliation.

HICSA was chosen to partner with Foodbank Victoria and Energy Australia as the recipient of 200 meals for their Tuckerbag Program every time Essendon kicked a goal and there was tremendous excitement when on six occasions the HICSA logo flashed up on screens all around the ground.

Umpires stood out in shirts designed by Worawa students Zephie Neil and Mariana Gurrawiwi.

HICSA CEO Anne Jenkins said the organisation was very grateful to be part of the event and very happy with the result.

HICSA Men's Worker Ralph Hume also played a role assisting with the cultural performance with Wurundjeri members.

He said the Dreamtime match brought people together from across the state and across Australia.

"Football has its history well and truly entrenched in our game, Marn Grook, and to be able to pay respect, not only to our traditional caretakers of the land, but to the people who have gone before such as Polly Farmer and uncle Doug Nicholls, the people who have blazed the way, is so important.

"I think they would be impressed and happy with what we are doing in their name," he said.

Rooms boom

By Kath Gannaway Powelltown Football Netball Club is among a number of sporting clubs across the Yarra Ranges that has been given a boost for women's and girls' sports with the installation of temporary change room facilities.

The $1 million temporary change room project has resulted in facilities installed at Powelltown Recreation Reserve, Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, Montrose Recreation Reserve, Kimberley Reserve in Chirnside Park and Esther Park in Mooroolbark.

Clubs will be able to use the change facilities, which include bathrooms, to accommodate for growing teams and women's participation in sport, until new pavilions with multiple change facilities are built.

Powelltown Football Netball Club President, Peter Podolinsky, said the initiative was very welcome.

"We have four netball teams and no change facilities for our netballers, so this is a fantastic facility in our eyes and one that will be much appreciated by all our players.

"It's a really good facility with all the bells and whistles - showers, toilets, change rooms, electric hand dryers and heating," Mr Podolinsky said.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said the change rooms will help sporting clubs to get female teams established before having a large-scale pavilion development.

"Across the Yarra Ranges, we've seen fantastic growth in female participation in sport over the last few years," Cr Cox said.

"However, this can be difficult for clubs that don't have dedicated female change rooms, or have to share their change rooms across multiple teams in a day.

"The temporary change rooms mean that clubs can grow their teams and encourage women and girls to sign up for sport, while more long-term infrastructure such as pavilion upgrades is organised."

I guess everybody has a different way of thinking about what he or she wants to do inlife, but for me drumming, and music generally, just connects me with other musicians and friends. The power of the drum connects me with other people. I know when I am teaching the kids that I am giving something to these kids that they will benefit from later on, and the joy coming from the parents, we all share that joy together.

What brought you to Warburton?

I used to run a tour in Ghana and that's how I met my wife, Santha Press. Santha was part of my final tour in Ghana in 2010 and in 2012 I ended up in Australia.

Whistles, screams disrespectful After reading what was actually an unfinished item regarding Anzac Day in the 'Mail' (8 May), I would like to add my comments and would be happy for the following to be printed in your next edition.

I attended the Anzac Day parade and service at Yarra Junction and, like many others, was disappointed by the whistles and screams coming from the netball and football games being played during the ceremony.

Yes, sport for young people is important, but also is respect for other young people who gave their lives to enable better futures for others.

No respect was shown by the organisers of these games.

It's not about the money donated to the RSL, or about sport being played before it goes dark; it's about a commemorative parade, a service of thanks and quiet reflection.

Please, do not let this happen again.

What is something people generally don't know about you?

I think there's not a lot people don't know ...

I'm not really outgoing. If you see me working that's my stage persona and after that I feel like being at home.

What is one of your most memorable moments?

For me coming to Australia and sharing my culture. I always feel happy travelling around and seeing people accepting what you are doing.

What would your final meal be?

We eat well at home and I always look forward to having a family meal together. In my region we have Okra stew, and that is a favourite.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness?

The company I worked with before with the artists all performing together, bringing that joy, is something I have missed and I would like to see that again in the future.

What is your favourite television show?

I love watching documentaries, things about history, and music.

What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

I am sure it would be my family first ... and there are more than six!

What was the first, or the best film, you have seen?

For me I always wanted to be a drummer ... musician, so wherever there's the sound of the drum, you will see Kofi there.

What are you working on right now?

I am doing a big project with Princes Hill Primary School in Carlton, so I am sitting in the gym ready to go with another group with the drums. Next week is our final concert.

What keeps your interest in music alive?

So, has the Yarra Ranges Council taken the "Warburton Mountain Bike Destination" project and doomed it to failure? How did they manage to do that, I hear you ask? It appears that the Council has treated the Upper Yarra Valley as if it is empty! No inhabitants! TERRA NULLUS! The planned "Mountain Bike Destination" project plans to funnel mountain bike trails down off the mountains, and on, into residential areas. The tracks may go along residential roads, easements, lanes, pathways, and on, into the centre of Warburton. The same could happen to Millgrove and Wesburn.

And this is only Stage 1. Does the Council think that 165,000 speeding, adrenalized mountain bikers, are not going to conflict with residents and their kids?

Do they think that there won't be accidents?

Do they think that there won't be collisions with local traffic?

Can you imagine the legal nightmares?

And I don't think the Council has told the local Mountain Bikers that they will have to pay to use the trails. Yes, this was announced by a Council officer at public meeting and yes ,I own a mountain bike and like riding it for free.

For the locals it could be a case of "free yesterday, prohibitive tomorrow!"

The Council seems to have adopted the overseas Mountain Bike lobbyist strategy of, "the timing of the release of information is critical" Yes, a mountain bike lobbyist bragged about the effectiveness of this strategy in a meeting. Apparently this strategy has worked in Tassie and NZ. Why not just ask the residents of Upper Yarra, what would work for them? Does the Council think that the needs of the Mountain Bikers and the needs of the residents, are so completely incompatible that there's no point in asking?

Have they already decided that the plan won't be modified, no matter what concerns are put forward?

Does the Council really believe that residents will accept this sort of treatment?

This whole problem goes all the way back to shire amalgamations. The old Upper Yarra Shire consulted its Rate Payers because all the councillors lived amongst us. Today's level of disregard could not have happened back then.

Another amalgamation failure! Many of the locals still don't know what's heading their way.

But they soon will!

Anyway, the project is now, most likely to collapse under a tidal wave of residents' outrage.

Bloods' 'dream' victory AFL Yarra Ranges' annual Dreamtime match was again a well-attended, spectacular and spirited affair.

Held at the Don Road Sporting Complex, Healesville, on Saturday 2 June, many fans turned out for the clash, which occurred during the same week as the Sir Doug Nichols' 'Dreamtime at the G' AFL game.

Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Joy Murphy, said the match recognised the many top Indigenous footballers to have come from the region.

The player's jumpers, and the netballers' dresses, were designed by Healesville designer, Sophie Young, and included important Wurumdjeri symbols such as Eucalyptus leaves, a boomerang and Warin (wombat).

The combatants, Healesville and Woori Yallock, went toe-to-toe from the outset.

However, the home team showed their class and ran away with a stirring victory, Healesville 10.15 (75) defeating Woori Yallock 5.9 (39).

An open letter to Yarra Ranges Council Dear Councillor Child, Mayor Cox and Members of Yarra Ranges Council, I am very interested in the proposed Mountain Bike Trails around Warburton.

This is significant project that is expected to bring large numbers of visitors to the area and cost a large amount to local, state and federal government. I am not opposed to the idea of recreational bike trails, I just want the opportunity to view the proposal and assurance that they will be sited appropriately at minimal impact to the environment and residents of this historic, beautiful and quite area and be properly managed in the long term to benefit all. I have visited and subscribed to the "Ride Yarra Ranges" website and read it all thoroughly. There is no substantial details about the proposal or map, detailed or otherwise, of the 36km Stage 1 "Drop a K" trails from Mt Donna Buang to Warburton and trails on Mt Little Joe and Mt Tugwell. I am aware that surveying markers have been sited, so clearly there is a detailed map of the proposed routes and it should be made available to all who interested.

According to the website made by Yarra Ranges Council "The Warburton Mountain Bike Destination and Yarra Valley Trail are expected to bring around 432,000 visitors annually to the Yarra Ranges. This consists of 384,000 day visitors and 48,000 night visitors." (http://www.rideyarraranges.com.au/) so it is a large project, estimated to cost $20million dollars over the 3 stages. When will the planning permit and plans for Stage 1 be made available for public comment and why are they being released for comment in 3 separate phases (1 immediately affected properties, 2 community and interest groups and then 3 wider community)?

I also read with interest in the FAQ "It is proposed to establish an Incorporated Association to manage the trails. This means all profits are put back into the association's activities." (http://www.rideyarraranges.com. au/). Could you please clarify who will be responsible for the appointment of the Incor-

porated Association and what activities are the Association expected to undertake? Will the trails remain an asset of Yarra Ranges and who will be monitoring the activities of the Incorporated Association to ensure community benefit? It mentions profits, does this mean that users must pay to ride on the trails? Will the Incorporated Association have to report to Yarra Ranges? Who will be responsible for the Public Liability Insurance of the trails and are planners aware of the numerous disused mine sites in the area proposed for use?

I urge you to hold public meetings to explain the proposal and make detailed plans available for all to comment as soon as possible. At present only properties directly affected have been supplied with small portions of maps of their immediate area but clearly this project is of a scale that the entire community should be given opportunity to comment at the proposal stage.

Is it true that there is proposed use of easements on some Warburton residents properties for trails? Surely this is not the case, that would be inconceivable. If there were public meetings then these questions could be answered and the community reassured that this project will not have a negative impact on the environment, heritage sites, local residents and public amenity.

A program to encourage inclusion for people living with a disability will continue to roll out at schools across the Yarra Ranges and beyond, with the support of Council's Community Grants.

The One Community program involves people living with a disability and Melba Support Services staff visiting schools to discuss what their lives are like, with a Q&A session to clear up misconceptions young people may have about disabilities.

Melba's Kathryn van der Haar said the organisation was planning to run three talks at schools through the year, such as one at Mooroolbark's Bimbadeen Heights Primary School.

"We've been building bridges with the schools, so we can come back again and chat with the senior students," Ms van der Haar said.

"From our point-of-view, we thought the Bimbadeen students asked some great questions and raised some really great observations - they were really respectful and it was worthwhile for us."

As part of the program, the speakers and students paint their hands and decorate tote bags. Bimbadeen student, Harley, said the day was a "handful of fun."

One Community received funding through Council's annual Grants for Community, which will provide a total of $390,000 in 2019 to projects under three streams: Community Development, Festivals and Events and Arts and Heritage.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the program would help young people to connect with people living with a disability.

"Through representations in the media and stereotypes, it's easy for people to get the wrong idea about those who have a disability.

"For some of these students, this will be the first time they've had the chance to hear about those experiences.

The residents at the Estia Health Yarra Junction Nursing Home are looking fabulous with the recent addition of a pamper house.

On Wednesday 9 May two lucky residents marked the opening of the homes new beauty treatment room by being the first to get pampered.

Much of the equipment within the room has been donated by the hard-working volunteers in the Estia cafĂŠ and from donations from the Yarra Junction Op Shop.

Sue Whyte, Clinical Care director said that the residents were absolutely loving it and that bookings for the pamper house, which runs on a Wednesday going up.

"The residents are absolutely loving it ... the first week we had six the next week we had eight," Ms Whyte said.

"It's all thing ladies love, but men can come in too, sit in a massage chair and have a massage or a haircut."

The pamper room includes a massage chair, area for cutting and washing hair, and it is expected to get more equipment.

Each Wednesday Laura Forster who runs her own hairdressing business "Valley Styles," visits the home.

"We try to make it like a home as much as possible, they come in here and can get all dolled up. .. just gives everyone a little bit of a lift," Ms Whyte said.

"This is an incredibly important program, not just for the students who will gain a greater understanding about the world, but for the Melba clients who get to meet enthusiastic young people and erase some of the misconceptions that are out there."

However, a $45,000 commitment from the Liberal-National Coalition could help to ease the burden.

The funds injection would free up time from intensive fundraising efforts, so volunteers can focus on equipping and empowering families, early childhood educators, teachers and professionals as they support children on the autism spectrum.

Shadow Assistant Minister for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bernie Finn, and Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, on Thursday 31 May met with committee members of Spectrum Journeys and announced the election promise.

Director of Spectrum Journeys, Kate Johnson, said the organisation needed breathing space in order to grow and better service the region.

"We're really excited because we're passionate about supporting carers and this grant will allow us to support parents with new programs, as well as to keep our hub running," she said.

"We have an amazing hub here, where we have therapists and community professionals offering an important service; to have this grant would be just amazing."

Spectrum Journeys offers workshops to families, carers and education staff, which are designed to equip people with the right skills to help individuals and families thrive.

In addition, they also run an incredible 'Blessing Bag' project, which is a unique chance to show parents and carers of children on the autism spectrum that they are valued.

Through the volunteer and donation-based project, items are packaged, with an affirming card, and donated.

Ms Johnson said an important part of their service is their efforts to work with a combination of families and educators.

"We can't do carers without doing education, because if everything is going terribly at school (for the child) they fall into a heap," she said.

"If we can provide both, then that beautiful scaffolding around families is more complete.

We see our role as really important; from the grassroots education of schools, to helping families."

Ms Johnson said there was much work to do to ensure children and families had access to all the services they need.

Mr Finn acknowledged there is a need to make help readily available to all, no matter their place on the spectrum.

"This is what I'm working towards. The day when we don't have to get up every morning and fight for everything that we need for our kids," Mr Finn said.

"When we do that, we'll have won. But that seems to be a fair way off, it has to be said."

Ms Vallence said an organisation such as Spectrum Journeys is integral in helping families to stay together through what can be a stressful time.

"Families going through this journey can be under great strain. Parents can be isolated and don't know how to cope," she said.

"Something I really like about what they do here is that the prime focus is on the child with autism and the family, and what bolsters that, which is the educators and the professionals who you work with.

By Kath Gannaway The Warburton Film Festival is back at the Mecca Theatre for its 35th year!

Running from 15 to 17 June it will feature films including drama, documentary, comedy, and science fiction from six different countries.

This year's festival will screen eight feature films, down from nine because of a new session devoted entirely to short films, which will screen the winners of the Show Us Your Shorts competition.

The festival opening celebration begins on Friday, 15 June, with music, finger-food and wine.

The festival has been hosted by the Yarra Ranges Film Society for the last 10 years, and received a community grant from Council to support this year's event.

Laurie Hastings and Sally Ahern have been helping organise the festival since the Yarra Ranges Film Society began hosting it.

Go WHYLD at Bonfire Night

By Kath Gannaway WHYLD Community Group is gathering logs for their Winter Warming Bonfire Night on Sunday, June 17, at Wickham's Reserve, Launching Place.

The annual event is a community gathering to celebrate the winter solstice and a great opportunity for Upper Yarra residents to rug up in their winter woollies and get together around the bonfire to enjoy the great things that come with the cooler weather.

An open mic stage will give locals the chance to showcase their musical talents, there will be WHYLD subsidised hot food, drinks, roasted chestnuts and, a firm favourite, toasted marshmallows.

As the sun sets the bonfire beckons for some hand-warming and hearty discussion

In a very fitting variation to the old 'take a plate' tradition, WHYLD is asking everyone to instead take along a log for the bonfire!

The Titan is a boring, inept mess of a movie.

US veteran Rick Janssen (Sam Worthington) becomes a test subject in a risky program for adapting humans to survive on Titan, Saturn's largest moon.

The Titan has ambitious themes of space colonisation and forced evolution, and reaches far but fails miserably.

Rick develops striking new abilities, but his lack of depth and Worthington's wooden performance make his exploration of these abilities fall flat. The entire Titan program carries no urgency, as the film only has trite exposition and stock footage to convince us of the necessity of colonising Titan.

The characters are bland archetypes, the

dialogue is awkward, and much of the film's run-time consists of repetitive tests and training punctuated by poorly-shot brutality. The film's editing and camerawork are atrocious, with abrupt scene transitions and absentminded framing of characters and locations.

The Titan program's genetic methods are so vague and silly that the film's moments of body horror - while sometimes creepy - come across as arbitrary, and Professor Cunningham (Tom Wilkinson), the leader of the program, is so obviously shady that his reveal as the villain is pointless.

It's also utterly bizarre how, in the climax, the villain is defeated but also vindicated after all the suffering he caused.

The Titan is available for streaming on Netflix, but I'd advise you avoid this aimless slog.

By Cameron Hutchison Round 6 was played in cold but sunny conditions; spectators were jostling for sunshine, while on the ground there were some big winners.

The winners in senior football: Emerald, Mt Evelyn, Monbulk, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Healesville, Alexandra, Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Seville.

A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Warburton-Millgrove, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Monbulk Hawks, Woori Yallock, Kinglake, Seville and Yea. And the Winners in the Reserves were Emerald, Mt Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville, Alexandra, Powelltown, Yea & a draw between Yarra Junction & Seville.

Unfortunately, Thornton were held scoreless in the third as all the play was in Alexandra's forward line where they piled on 8.4 and went into the last well in command.

The last quarter was the biggest with 10.9 being kicked. Alexandra had 13 goalkickers in all for the day.

By Dean Thompson This coming long weekend the Queen's Birthday weekend at Alexandra Speedway thousands of fans will gather to enjoy the annual 100 Lap Derby for Open Sedans with a host of stars competing to etch their name in history as a champion of the event.

Everybody will have to defeat back-to-back champion Lennie Bonnici while there will also be action from the Standard Saloons and Junior Sedans also.

Seventy-plus competitors have entered the main event with Bonnici the man with the results on the board over the past two seasons.

He will be seriously challenged by Warrick Taylor who just a few weeks ago set the fastest ever lap time around the short course circuit which is made up of the speedway front and back straights, a dog leg through the infield and turns three to four proper.

Victorian Sports Sedan champion Damien Miller and his brother, Brendan, regular sprintcar racers Tony Moule a former winner of the derby, Corey Lincoln, Colin Lincoln, Daniel Scott, David Donegan and Brad Warren runnerup in the last two derby's all line up in the field, Lenny Bates, a Street Stock favourite, along with a host of other Street Stock regulars in the field such as Darren Forrest who will be campaign-

ing a former Super Sedan spec car and former South Australian champion Matt Nelson.

The fastest ever Sports Sedan through the short circuit Luke Fallon who just happens to be the King of the Derby with numerous previous victories is hoping to return to the front of the field with another win.

Racing starts from 2pm on Saturday and Sunday with action finishing somewhere between 9.30 to 11pm, depending on stoppages during the night.

The speedway is situated up Gordon Street Alexandra with costs for each night adult entry cost of $25, Aged and invalid pensioners $10, children between the age of 10 and 16 are $10

and Kids under 10 are admitted free; those turning up for both nights can pay for both nights of action in one payment.

You can pay for two days attendance upon arrival.

Warburton golf results

Yarra Valley Soccer Club results Four games were played for Yarra Valley yesterday and three of them were at home. With the Under 13s having a bye this round, the only junior game on was the Under 11s who lost 4-0 but played valiantly.

A fantastic penalty save from young Tom in goals the highlight in that one.

Next was the women's game and the developing and young women's side lost to Blackburn in a 5-1 loss. Maddison Lumsden scoring the solitary goal in a decent performance from the girls.

The reserves were playing away at Blackburn this week and were confident of a big win. And that confidence paid off in a convincing 5-0 win over the Blackburn side. Five individual goal scorers were on the scoresheet that game, which any team would be chuffed with.

Jason Wishart, Chris Job, Finlay Kerridge, Jack Rinke and the young Zar scoring, capping off a good day for the seconds.

Through this hands-on experience, children can learn the positions of the accelerator and brake pedals. They drive 7 metres into the exhibit and then reverse to the start.

Toyota has exhibited a series of Camatte concepts at the Toy Show each year since 2012

with the aim of inspiring the next-generation of motorists.

The name Camatte, based on the Japanese word for caring, signifies "caring for others" and "caring for cars". Petta is taken from a Japanese onomatopoeic phrase meaning "to stick"), reflecting the travel items stuck to the vehicle.

"The main concept behind 'Camatte' is to convey the joy and dreams of motor vehicles to the next generation," a Toyota spokesperson said.

The Tokyo Toy Show is open to the public on the weekend of June 9-10.
