With November's state election looming, one of the region's most important not-for-profit organisations could capitalise on the many commitments being rolled out throughout the region.

The Lilydale-based Spectrum Journeys is "bursting at the seams" due to increased demand and the weight of its financial commitments, with many of its 50 volunteers going well above their call of duty to keep the service in operation.

However, a $45,000 commitment from the Liberal-National Coalition could help to ease the burden.

The funds injection would free up time from intensive fundraising efforts, so volunteers can focus on equipping and empowering families, early childhood educators, teachers and professionals as they support children on the autism spectrum.

Shadow Assistant Minister for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bernie Finn, and Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, on Thursday 31 May met with committee members of Spectrum Journeys and announced the election promise.

Director of Spectrum Journeys, Kate Johnson, said the organisation needed breathing space in order to grow and better service the region.

"We're really excited because we're passionate about supporting carers and this grant will allow us to support parents with new programs, as well as to keep our hub running," she said.

"We have an amazing hub here, where we have therapists and community professionals offering an important service; to have this grant would be just amazing."

Spectrum Journeys offers workshops to families, carers and education staff, which are designed to equip people with the right skills to help individuals and families thrive.

In addition, they also run an incredible 'Blessing Bag' project, which is a unique chance to show parents and carers of children on the autism spectrum that they are valued.

Through the volunteer and donation-based project, items are packaged, with an affirming card, and donated.

Ms Johnson said an important part of their service is their efforts to work with a combination of families and educators.

'A mosaic of memory'

By Derek Schlennstedt The Selby community is putting together the pieces of a colossal mosaic project at Selby Community House and it's slowly taking shape.

The Community House has organised a large mosaic to be displayed in its Community Indigenous Bushfoods Garden, involving community members young and old through Selby Primary School, Selby Kindergarten, Scouts and other community groups.

Tracy van Vloten at the Community House said that, when completed, multiple mosaic boards created by the community will be a permanent outdoor display on mud brick walls.

"Our mosaic courses have been really successful, and we wanted to enhance the space outside, following the unveiling of the bushfoods garden," Mrs van Vloten said.

"We're looking at it being there for a long time - it reflects the local environment and the native flora and fauna.

"There hasn't been an art project of this magnitude in Selby, nothing that involved the entire community, and we thought this was a perfect opportunity to do that, and for future generations."

The Community House received funding through Council's 2018 Grants for Community, which Mrs van Vloten said was essential to getting the project off the ground.

"We couldn't have done it without the Council grant," she said.

"It's really given us this opportunity - we've put in a lot of in-kind hours and had a lot of donations. These things put together have just created a magnificent project."

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the project was a great example of community art.

"The Community House has gone above and beyond in involving everyone possible in the creation of their mosaic murals, including regular sessions with the Selby Primary School and kindergarten," Cr Cox said.

The mosaic mural is expected to be completed in November, with an opening event to follow later in the year.

Fiery art show celebrates milestone

By Derek Schlennstedt It's difficult to believe that the Belgrave CFA has clocked up 35 years of Art Show experience but that's exactly what they've done.

This year the Firefighters at Belgrave CFA are once again gearing up for their annual art show which has under its belt 35 years of collaborating with local artists and offering a blank canvas for them to show their art.

With more than 250 pieces from local and national artists on show and available for purchase, the art show has become as iconic as the Belgrave Lantern festival.

Used as the brigade's major fund-raiser for the year, a small percentage of each painting goes to the brigade.

This year the brigade is broadening its scope and as a result various different styles

are to be featured.

Kirstin Cross, Community Education Officer at Belgrave Fire Brigade said visitors could expect a wonderful array of art and anyone could appreciate the different types of art.

"There are so many different styles, and medium ... one artist does digital work but then paints the other half of the piece. " The art show is renowned throughout Victoria, with some artists sending their work thousands of miles to exhibit in the show.

"We've got one artist who couriers his work to us from the other side of the city and then some of the other artists paint just for the art show," Kirstin said.

Kirstin encourages and invites everyone to come along to the event to see a diverse range of intricate and beautiful art.

"That's the amazing thing ... it goes for four days," "You meet the artist on the Friday night and have champagne with them and the next couple of days you can keep visiting that painting and if it's still there, they can buy the painting," she said.

"People can come in and walk out with something beautiful."

The Belgrave Fire Brigade Art Show will commence with a champagne opening on Friday 8 June from 7.30pm which will also include a presentation of awards to various artists. The opening costs $15, but, from 9- 11 June every day from10am-4pm, entry is free.

The art show is supported by businesses in Belgrave and Tecoma which take out advertising in the show's catalogue.

Change room boom Sporting clubs across the Yarra Ranges will be given a boost for women's and girls' sports, following the installation of five temporary change room facilities including one at Mount Evelyn.

The $1 million temporary change room project has resulted in facilities installed at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, Montrose Recreation Reserve, Kimberley Reserve in Chirnside Park, Powelltown Recreation Reserve and Esther Park in Mooroolbark.

Clubs will be able to use the change facilities, which include bathrooms, to accommodate for growing teams and women's participation in sport, until new pavilions with multiple change facilities are built.

Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club President, Mal Darke, said having dedicated female change rooms would be encouraging for women and girls wanting to sign up for footy.

"We've been frontrunners in relation to female participation in football - we started our first team four years ago now, which has grown into four teams with about 90 girls and a senior women's team as a result," Mr Darke said.

"We need these facilities, so women can have a separate, private area - it will increase our capacity on game day enormously.

"It's absolutely fantastic that Council has recognised us as worthy recipient as this from both the junior club and the senior club, it's very much appreciated."

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said the change rooms will help sporting clubs to get female teams established before having a large-scale pavilion development.

"Across the Yarra Ranges, we've seen fantastic growth in female participation in sport over the last few years," Cr Cox said.

"However, this can be difficult for clubs that don't have dedicated female change rooms, or have to share their change rooms across multiple teams in a day.

Breast effort for their care Thousands more women in Melbourne's east now have easier access to life-saving breast cancer screening and care.

Easter Metropolitan Member, Shaun Leane, joined Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, on Monday 21 May to officially open the $10 million Eastern Health Breast and Cancer Centre at Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East.

The new centre is a 'one-stop-shop', giving women quicker and more convenient access to the very best breast screening, breast cancer treatment and supportive care services all under one roof.

The centre will deliver to more than 25,000 additional women every year.

Mr Leane said; "The new one-stop-shop will support women at all stages of their cancer journey. It is now easier for thousands of women in the east to get the care they need, when they need it - and all under the same room".

On the same day, a 29-year-old male from Don Valley was pulled over on Manuka Drive, Ferntree Gully, and produced a positive result for or an illicit substance.

Both results have to be analysed by the Victorian Forensic medicine and police are awaiting results for illicit drugs while driving.

Monbulk MP James Merlino is encouraging organisations that support senior Victorians to apply for the 2018 Participation and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) seniors grants program.

The grants are worth $300,000 in 2018, with organisations eligible for funding up to $10,000 for projects that specifically encourage culturally diverse seniors to connect with their communities.

Mr Merlino said seniors from CALD backgrounds are often refugees or migrants who are at higher risk of social isolation.

IN BRIEF Plea to find iPad owner Police are seeking to reunite an Apple iPad Mini that was handed into Lilydale Police Station in January.

The iPad was found at Chirnside Park by a Good Samaritan and police are anxious to find the young owner to return this valuable item.

The iPad has a distinctive Spiderman cover and emojis inside the cover; the owner will be able to unlock the iPad to claim ownership.

Burglary in Belgrave Some time between 6pm on 2 June and 10am on 3 June, a residential address on Martin St, Belgrave, was broken into.

Belgrave Police allege that an individual gained access to the garage and has taken work and electrical tools which are valued at an estimated cost of $3500.

Drug driving Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol identified two possible drug drivers on Sunday 27 May. A 36-year-old male from Montrose was pulled over for driving without a licence, on Fortuna Avenue in Croydon.

He underwent a preliminary oral fluid test and tested positive for an illicit substance.

The driver also had prior convictions and as a result his motor vehicle was impounded for a month at a cost of $878.

Trees lopped to stop 4WDs Police are seeking information regarding a number of trees that were cut down in Bunyip State Park, causing Towt Road to be blocked off.

Emerald Police believe the trees were cut down to prevent four-wheel-drives and motorcycles from gaining entry into Bunyip.

Cars damaged Over the weekend starting 26 May, Lilydale Police received three reports of vehicles damaged by rocks on Anderson Street, Main Road and at the Lilydale railway Station car park.

Police report that no property was stolen just vandalism to vehicles, including smashed windows and panel damage.

Drug trafficking On 30 May at 10.25pm, police intercepted a car in Emerald.

Police have found a large amount of drugs in the vehicle, including meth amphetamine and GHB. As a result, police have undertaken a search warrant and the offender was remanded for trafficking drugs.

Vehicles left unlocked Overnight between 1 and 2 June, four vehicles were broken into in Montrose.

Police report that the majority were left unlocked and are urging members of the public to keep their cars locked at all times and remove any valuable items from them.

Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda Following on from a previous article I wrote in February of this year, on the lack of evidence for common knee orthopaedic surgeries, my colleagues and I decided to investigate evidence around treatment for common shoulder ailments - shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) and rotator cuff injury.

What we found was just as startling.

Acromioplasties and sub-acromial decompressions have been performed regularly in Australia over the previous thirty years for SIS. It is the most common type of shoulder pain we see, yet often wrongly diagnosed as bursitis or rotator cuff pathology.

The reason for this is that SIS is often coupled with these conditions - the bursa and one of the rotator cuff tendons being jammed against bone is the impingement itself, yet the bursa and rotator cuff tendons are not always the source of pain.

In fact, one mid 1990s study of 97 people across all age groups without shoulder pain found that 34 per cent had rotator cuff tears, and 15 per cent were full-thickness tears.

Similar studies show bursitis (inflamed bursae) in upto 60 per cent of men and 80 per cent of women, regardless of symptoms.

Causative factors are often postural in nature, specifically slouched upper back postures and/or weak scapula muscles.

Acromioplasties, where part of the overlying bone is removed, and sub-acromial decompressions are performed in order to reduce pressure in the space just above the shoulder joint where the impingement occurs.

Yet, there is literally no evidence that these two procedures, which cost the public and private purse millions of dollars each year plus time-off-work costs to the economy, have any greater effect than conservative treatment (physiotherapy and exercise).

In fact, corticosteroid injections for pain relief (if required) combined with a tailored physiotherapy exercise program are reported to have greater outcomes than surgery even in severe cases.

And those who don't improve with conser-

vative treatment also do not get better with surgery.

Evidence for rotator cuff tendon repairs is somewhat greyer: surgical opinion for rotator cuff tears should be considered only for a healthy population under 50 years old that require high level use of the upper body, and only for tears greater than 3cm in length, and always after attempting at least three months of conservative management first.

Bear in mind that the reported rate of retear of repaired tendons is anywhere from 50 - 80 per cent depending on which studies you read, which is pretty alarming considering that it is often a 12 to 18-month rehabilitation period to return to full strength post surgery.

It pays to be informed, and the current trend appears to be just that - patients seeking the best evidence for treatment for their problems and taking ownership of their choices.

Worawa match a highlight In the a first for girls' football in the Yarra Ranges, Worawa Aboringal College took on the Upwey-Tecoma Under 16s Girls team recently at Talaskia Reserve, Upwey Ferntree College.

Worawa College, which I located about 4km south of Healesville, is a boarding school for girls, with students arriving from as far away as Katherine, Darwin and the islands of Torres Strait.

As fate would have it, the match took place on Sunday 27 May, the day marking the beginning of National Reconciliation Week.

The Worawa football team is a first for the college.

The Upwey-Tecoma team has thrived since its formation in 2017.

After initially struggling for numbers just days out before last season, within around four weeks the team list ballooned to 23 players and the club hasn't looked back.

The team went on to win seven of its 13 games to achieve third on the competition ladder of 10 teams.

They played in two rounds of the finals series before being knocked out in the first semifinal versus Mooroolbark.

Liberals to fund hospital

By Derek Schlennstedt Liberal Candidate John Schurink, Member for Eastern Victoria, Edward O'Donohue, and Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge, are pushing the State Labor Government to further fund the ICU service at Angliss Hospital, despite rebuttals from the Health Minister, Jill Hennessy that the service is only months away.

They claim that although construction has finished and facilities are on offer, there is not enough funding and staff to support the service, which they say could have been rectified in the state budget.

In 2016, the State Labor Government announced a $20 million expansion of Eastern Health's Angliss Hospital.

That funding would go towards an increase of the capacity of the hospital's critical care services and would deliver a much-needed new intensive care unit (ICU) on the fourth floor.

Mr Schurink, Mr O'Donohue and Ms Wooldridge said that although the fourth floor construction had finished, it continues to function as a high dependency unit rather than an ICU - a result of under-staffing.

Mr Schurink said the community were being led to believe that a functioning ICU was being offered which would cause patients to be wrongly taken to Angliss.

That was exactly the experience that Trevor Evans's brother had when he was recently taken to Angliss Hospital after suffering chest pains.

"My brother was having trouble breathing and we got the paramedic in, we asked for them to go to Monash; they said, 'we'll go to Ferntree Gully that's the closest and they have an ICU unit,'" Trevor said.

"The next day he was transferred to Box Hill."

Mr Schurink, a former Mica Paramedic for over 25 years, said there was a fundamental problem in if paramedics and the community believed an ICU was available when it wasn't.

"If you were to have the understanding that there was an ICU was here, you'd bring a different cohort of patients because you know that you can bring them here and they can be properly looked after without having to be transferred, otherwise as a paramedic you would actually bypass the hospital," he said.

"When you have patients coming in and believing to come to an ICU and then having to be transferred out, it's just not good enough," he said.

Currently, it is believed the hospital is functioning with a high dependency unit, with the main difference between the two relating to staffing, expertise and the difference in patients.

Ms Wooldridge said that if Daniel Andrews refused to further fund the hospital, an elected Liberals Government would see it funded and opened as soon as possible.

"If Daniel Andrews refuses to fund this ICU so it can deliver to the needs of the community an elected liberal government will fund it," Ms Wooldridge said.

Though, Jill Hennessy, Minister for Health has hit back at the claims stating that "Cuts,

closures and privatisations are all the Liberals have in store for our health care."

"We're building a $20 million intensive care unit and short stay unit at the Angliss Hospital, complete with enough beds for patients requiring urgent, specialist care," Ms Hennessy said.

Q&A What is something people generally don't know about you?

They mistake me from being from Sweden but I'm from Switzerland.

What is one of your most memorable moments?

It would probably be coming to Australia.

What would your final meal be?

I actually don't like food, I only eat because it's essential to survive. Whatever comes up on the day I suppose? It could be vegetables, a lump of meat, it honestly doesn't matter ...

I'm not a food person.

What has been your favourite piece of work to create to-date?

I'm actually quite proud of the extension we did at home for my wife's dental studio. I'm not a builder, but we built it and it looks really nice. Some friends helped me, and we used recycled building material, so it's always satisfying when you can reuse something and not go down to Bunning's and buy something brand spanking new.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness?

It would've been nice to see a dinosaur hopping around, that would be pretty memorable, though it would have to be with David Attenborough ... imagine history through his voice What would you say has been a passion in your life?

Life itself ... we have a bit of property, a bunch of goats and we're looking after them so that's a bit of a passion, and of course cartooning.

From where do you draw inspiration?

Everyone. For caricature, or cartoon it is everyday life. I could just sit out there in a coffee shop and watch people; the way they dress, the way they walk, the way they interact, it's so fascinating those little idiosyncrasies. I don't look up to famous people to inspire me; rather I take a snippet out of everyone. It's like you're building your own Frankenstein.

At the moment, Gruen on ABC. What three guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

Albert Einstein to see how smart he really is, Brian Cox because he's fascinating and I like his voice, and I would love to see Florence, from Florence and the Machine ... I just like voices in general.

What are you working on right now?

I was just shifting some logs to be milled up.

I've got an old 72 Bedford Telstra truck and it lifts those logs, then it's finishing off this week's cartoon.

Is there a new medium that you've been exploring or would like to explore in the future?

I wouldn't mind dipping my toes into animation, but the reality is you're wasting days after days after days working on a few seconds of an animation. It is an interesting aspect though as you can tell the story with facial expressions in motion and that's fascinating to me.

I like to look at people and see how they change their face and exaggerate it. It's like a caricature. You squish there face and lighten them up so you have that animated look and feel; I love doing that.

Do you see the world in caricature?

I can, it's not hard to do.

Which object that you've lost do you wish you still had?

It's something that I lost in Australia and it's nothing fancy or particularly good at all. It was a character that had an eight metre long tail. It's called a 'Marsupilami.' It looked like a panther, and it's from a French comic book and it looked really cool on the motorbike. I'd strap him on the back and his tail was flailing in the wind and I just lost that one day. It just fell off; I keep missing it because it was such a cool thing to have.

Designed to save lives If there's one thing Upper Ferntree Gully CFA volunteer Darren Johnson wants to protect as much as his community, it's his fellow firefighters.

Darren has a devised a simple system so firefighters can easily access safety blankets if they're stuck in a burn-over.

The ingenious blanket retention and deployment system earned Darren a highly commended honour in the recent Spirit of CFA awards where he came runner-up out of 23 other volunteer around the state.

In 2009 three brigade members were caught in a fire that destroyed their truck.

"From hearing their stories about trying to get the blankets out from behind their seats and out of their plastic bags in in a time-critical burn-over, I thought we could come up with a better system," Darren said.

Darren used space in the rollover protection area to store two blankets.

He came up with a design that was trialled and found to be easy to handle. The system has since been updated to make it more practical, with a bigger release handle that is more visible and added clips and buckles making it easier to re-stow.

In burn-overs, curtains cover truck windows and a spray system puts water over the truck and the thick blankets are a vital part of their line of defence.

All firefighters escaped the 2009 fire, but Darren said their experiences continued to resonate with the brigade.

"With this system you've got a blanket out in seconds," he said.

The system is used in both upper Ferntree Gully trucks. Darren has also installed a set on Mt Evelyn's truck.

"It's simple and inexpensive and because it's a strap it can go between different styles of roll bars," Darren said. "You just have to reach up and the blanket is deployed in seconds, and it's easy to re-set."

Gifted land for the birds

By Derek Schlennstedt A 20ha piece of prime bushland in Macclesfield - dedicated to the life's work and memory of Healesville wildlife champion, the late Jeanne Wilcox - has been handed over to The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater.

The land is set to be included in the Yellingbo Nature Reserve.

The transaction was negotiated by Trust for Nature with funds from the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association and the Myer Foundation.

Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve is home to Victoria's bird emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater, and the lowland Lead beater's Possum.

Now the 20ha will help to provide extra habitat for these endangered animals.

Members of Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHHE), Parks Victoria and DELWP, JESWA volunteers, Trust for Nature staff joined Member for Monbulk James Merlino on Friday 1 June to formally hand-over the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve.

Deputy Premier of Victoria, James Merlino, handed over the land to FoHHE and spoke highly of the collective involvement it took to purchase the land.

"We are so fortunate to have the friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, a group of passionate volunteers protecting not only the Helmeted Honeyeater, but the Lead beater's possum and to be supported by Parks Victoria, DELWP, Yarra Ranges Council," Mr Merlino said.

"To have the Myer foundation and Judith Earley foundation provide the funding and then Trust for Nature to do the negotiations on behalf and then gifting that land to the state, and then from there back to Parks Victoria, FoHHEr and DELWP to protect it.

LETTERS Presumptive cancer rights need support I find the decision by the Andrews Labour Government to dismiss moves by the Liberal Nationals to introduce presumptive cancer rights for Victorian firefighters very disappointing.

This proposed legislation would have given firefighters, diagnosed with certain cancers, compensation without needing to prove their cancer was related to their role as a firefighter.

Under the presumptive rights legislation, it would be accepted that their firefighting service was the cause, allowing them to claim compensation through Worksafe.

The Liberal Nationals presumptive rights bill would give volunteer firefighters direct access to cancer compensation without the need for an exhaustive, 'jumping through hoops' process to prove their case.

Labor cannot be trusted with the lives of

our volunteer firefighters.

In the lead-up to the last election, Labor promised it would introduce presumptive rights inside 100 days if they won.

They did win: and three-and-a-half years later they showed complete disregard for the needs of firefighters by voting down the same legislation they previously promised.

The Andrews Government decided to tie their bill to split up the CFA, giving the firefighters union power over CFA decisions, to the presumptive rights legislation.

The Liberal Nationals saw through this sneaky tactic and voted down that bill to protect the CFA and CFA volunteers.

When Labour failed to introduced the presumptive rights bill, with 'no strings attached', the Liberal National felt compelled to introduce their own 'no strings attached' bill, which backdates eligibility to 9 March, 2015.

Currently, volunteer firefighter's eligibility

to receive compensation for contracting certain cancers is dependent on an advisory committee to judge every volunteer firefighter to decide if they: 'attended fires to the extent reasonably necessary to fulfil the purpose of their service as a firefighter'. Career firefighters are not subjected to such discriminatory scrutiny'.

This unfair obstacle will be removed by the Liberal Nationals, making the road to cancer compensation the same for both career and volunteer firefighters.

The Liberal Nationals' presumptive rights bill shows they value the volunteers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe all year round, not just during the summer months.

It's difficult to understand how Daniel Andrews, and his city-focused Labor government, can be so dismissive of the medical needs of our CFA volunteer firefighters and vote down this vital piece of legislation.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a week's holiday in South Australia.

We were impressed by the lack of roadside litter and their recycling system in public places like the zoo and the botanic gardens.

Unfortunately, when we returned, Victoria was, by comparison, not so clean.

More than 40 musicians filled the stage, playing some well-loved pieces by Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and some better known by Mancini, Sibelius and others.

The Shostakovich Waltz No.2 with which the evening ended was so appreciated it was repeated bringing the concert to a joyful close.

It was noted by all that the conductor and musicians enjoyed working together while one little girl attached herself to the pianist who took the harp's part, enjoying every note.

There is no doubt that Emerald does value music, as did David.

After living on the mountain for 14 years, and having spent 25 years working in the theatre industry, I am excited to hear that Mount Dandenong maybe getting a theatre of our own.

The proposed theatre building, known as the Forest Hive, will be built on the grounds of Sherbrooke Community School, replacing a dilapidated old house.

I don't have children at the Sherbrooke community school, but I see this building as an amazing asset for the rest of the community.

Mount Dandenong has always been a thriving place for actors, musicians, visual artists and creative people; and I have always thought there was a need for an actual performance space on the mountain.

Not only would it be a venue for the school, local schools and dance schools who currently have to hire theatres 30 or 40 minutes away off the mountain, but it would also be a venue for local theatre companies, professional touring companies and would open up opportunities for partnerships with local artists and mentoring programs.

Although Burrinja Cultural Centre is within 15km of the proposed Forest Hive, in no way do I believe it would detract from their business.

In fact, having another performance space in the area could benefit both theatres opening up the Dandenong Ranges as an arts precinct; bringing in more tourism to the area.

Many other theatres that are built within close proximity to one another are thriving.

For example, the George Wood centre at Yarra Valley Grammar, the Karraleika theatre in Ringwood and the Whitehorse Centre in Nunnawading are all within a short distance of one another and are all successful venues in their own right.

On behalf of the arts community, I think this theatre could be a wonderful addition to our beautiful mountain!

Gardens to be everywhere

By Derek Schlennstedt From Selby to Lilydale, students will be getting their hands dirty building vegie and bush tucker gardens, indigenous and sensory gardens.

Upwey Preschool, Ferny Creek primary and Selby primary are a few of the 219 Victorian schools to receive a grant from the Powerful Youth Projects, in the second year of the program funded by Momentum Energy through its partnership with Junior Landcare.

Following a successful first year, which saw more than 24,000 students engaging in over

200 projects, the Powerful Youth Projects program rolled out across the state again in 2018.

Momentum Energy has funded 219 Powerful Youth Projects across Victoria to the tune of almost $205000.

Of the schools to receive a grant was Selby Primary school, for their sustainability garden project and Ferny Creek for their Indigenous garden project.

Upwey Pre School also received a grant for their Indigenous Garden and Bush Cubby project and Lilydale for thir Bush Foods Garden and Compost area.

The variety of the projects range from veggie or bush tucker gardens to composting or recycling projects, sensory gardens and other sustainable or environmental ideas.

Other projects include those to learn about biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, including bee projects, frog bogs and native revegetation.

Dr Shane Norris, Landcare Australian Acting CEO, said he was delighted to be able to support so many schools in Victoria.

"Junior Landcare is all about encouraging young people to play an active role in ensuring

the safe future of their environment," he said.

"It's fantastic to be working in partnership with Momentum Energy two years in a row supporting thousands of children to get 'hands on' with nature ... last year's projects produced exciting results and we can't wait to see this year's projects come to fruition."

Through the projects, schools, childcare centres and youth groups across Victoria will see young people actively caring for and learning about their natural environment.

Day to treasure gardens

By Peter Douglas An estimated 1600 nature-lovers helped to celebrate Botanic Garden Day on Sunday 27 May at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens.

Visitors from near and far took time out from their busy schedules to enjoy the vibrantcoloured leaves of autumn, as well as the chance to spot the odd kookaburra or lyrebird, while inspecting plants and stalls run by the Australian Rhododendron Society and Friends of George Tindale Memorial Gardens.

Ranger Team Leader, Tex Moon, said the huge turn-out was a fantastic result for this time of year, with many families and couples enjoying the special day.

Botanic Gardens Day is a national event to celebrate the role that botanic gardens play in species conservation.

The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is particularly special because it is the first garden to participate in the recently launched 'Care for the Rare' program.

Its aim is to provide a safeguard for rare and

threatened Victorian plant species against extinction in the wild.

Senior Ranger at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens, Craig Parsons, recently said species have been matched to a botanic garden where they are expected to adapt.

"In the Dandenong Ranges, we are getting more alpine and mountain type plants, because this is obviously a location where they're most likely to grow," he said.

"We're lucky here; we're already establishing this alpine garden. So when this program came up, they thought of us straight away because it fits in here."

Six gardens have been chosen for the first round of the program, including the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens, Victoria's newest botanic gardens.

Several rare species will be added to their collection, including Bogong Daisy-bush, or Oleria frostii, which naturally occurs in Victoria's alpine regions and is highly susceptible to impact from climate change.

"For some of these students, this will be the first time they've had the chance to hear about those experiences.

"This is an incredibly important program, not just for the students who will gain a greater understanding about the world, but for the Melba clients who get to meet enthusiastic young people and erase some of the misconceptions that are out there."

Pensioners will be able to access renewable energy with no upfront costs, to reduce their power bills and their carbon footprint, thanks to the latest round of Solar Savers.

The Solar Savers program allows pensioners (including seniors or people with a disability) who own their own home to apply to purchase a Council-endorsed quality solar system.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the systems will be installed by a local contractor and purchased with a low-interest bank loan to be paid back gradually over 10 years.

"Households who sign up have access to the bank loan, subject to normal bank lending criteria, with power bill savings covering the cost of repayments," he said.

"Solar Savers will check to make sure every household taking part will be at least $100 in front, compared to their current usage and bills.

"This program has been designed to make it easier for pensioners to get a solar system installed, to help them save money, stay comfortable in extreme weather and lower their carbon emissions.

"At council, we're proud to be leading the way in the community with renewable energy, and helping local households to get on board with this pioneering program."

Solar Savers is a partnership between more than 20 Victorian Councils and four regional Greenhouse Alliances.

Sign-ups open on 28 May and are open until Friday, 13 July. Places are strictly limited.

Contact Solar Savers if you own your own home, have a Government Pension Card, are usually home from 9am-5pm, have an average-to-high electricity use and do not currently have solar panels installed.

A program to encourage inclusion for people living with a disability will continue to roll out at schools across the Yarra Ranges and beyond, with the support of Council's Community Grants.

The One Community program involves people living with a disability and Melba Support Services staff visiting schools to discuss what their lives are like, with a Q&A session to clear up misconceptions young people may have about disabilities.

Melba's Kathryn van der Haar said the organisation was planning to run three talks at schools through the year, such as one at Mooroolbark's Bimbadeen Heights Primary School.

"We've been building bridges with the schools, so we can come back again and chat with the senior students," Ms van der Haar said.

"From our point-of-view, we thought the Bimbadeen students asked some great questions and raised some really great observations - they were really respectful and it was worthwhile for us."

As part of the program, the speakers and students paint their hands and decorate tote bags. Bimbadeen student, Harley, said the day was a "handful of fun."

One Community received funding through Council's annual Grants for Community, which will provide a total of $390,000 in 2019 to projects under three streams: Community Development, Festivals and Events and Arts and Heritage.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the program would help young people to connect with people living with a disability.

"Through representations in the media and stereotypes, it's easy for people to get the wrong idea about those who have a disability.

Nomination for longlist

By Peter Douglas Upwey-based author Lia Hills has entered the company of Australia's literary elite, after earning a place on the 2018 Longlist for the prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award.

Her latest novel, 'The Crying Place', has captured the hearts of not only avid readers, but critics as well, who have nominated Hills' first adult release as among the finest offerings of 2017, along with the likes of Peter Carey, Michelle de Krester and Kim Scott.

For Hills, the novel is the culmination of five years of hard work and dedication, with its origins in her teenage years and her observations about the treatment of Indigenous Australians.

Hills, who has spent time travelling and volunteering in central Australia, said the novel was not only a way to shed light on important cultural issues, but a cathartic process for her personally.

She was born in New Zealand and moved to Tasmania at age 15, when she was shocked at the absence of Indigenous culture.

This was in the 1980s, when she heard the words, "we got rid of them".

"I've remained haunted by the implied brutality of that phrase and the absence of an Indigenous presence," Hills said.

"I knew one day that haunting would find its voice."

The novel itself follows the story of the protagonist, Saul, who receives the devastating news of the death of his oldest friend, Jed, who recently returned from working in a remote Aboriginal community.

Saul's discovery in Jed's belongings of a photo of a woman convinces him that she may hold the answers to Jed's fate.

So Saul heads out on a journey into the heart of the Australian desert to find the truth.

Hills moved to the Dandenong Ranges around 20 years ago and she has been prolific, with her work including poetry and books for young adults.

She also conducts spoken-word sessions at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and other literarybased activities.

Hills is also a regular at the Belgrave Library, where she can often be seen editing her work.

On the award itself, she said it was a little unnerving to be considered among such great Australian authors.

"When you look at some of those names, it's pretty scary. But it's given me renewed confidence and energy, as well as the opportunity to take this novel to greater audiences," she said.

"The novel is for those who are not sure how to speak about these things, for those who carry around their own wounds."

Hills said her novels can be purchased through the Belgrave Book Barn, or through her publisher, Allen & Unwin.

The Miles Franklin Literary Award was established through the will of 'My Brilliant Career' author, Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin.

Patrick White, the first winner of the literary prize, was crowned in 1957 with 'Voss'; and, since then, the award has presented more than $1.1 million to Australian authors.

The award shines light on some of Australia's most talented writers.

While the prize has been given to a truly wide scope of novels, it has always remained true to the terms of Miles Franklin's will: to be of the highest literary merit and presenting Australian life in any phase.

An iceberg of bad decisions The Titan Starring Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling and Tom Wilkinson Rated M The Titan is a boring, inept mess of a movie.

US veteran Rick Janssen (Sam Worthington) becomes a test subject in a risky program for adapting humans to survive on Titan, Saturn's largest moon.

The Titan has ambitious themes of space colonisation and forced evolution, and reaches far but fails miserably.

Rick develops striking new abilities, but his lack of depth and Worthington's wooden performance make his exploration of these abilities fall flat. The entire Titan program carries no urgency, as the film only has trite exposition and stock footage to convince us of the necessity of colonising Titan.

The characters are bland archetypes, the dialogue is awkward, and much of the film's run-time consists of repetitive tests and training punctuated by poorly-shot brutality. The film's editing and camerawork are atrocious, with abrupt scene transitions and absentminded framing of characters and locations.

The Titan program's genetic methods are so vague and silly that the film's moments of body horror - while sometimes creepy - come across as arbitrary, and Professor Cunningham (Tom Wilkinson), the leader of the program, is so obviously shady that his reveal as the villain is pointless.

It's also utterly bizarre how, in the climax, the villain is defeated but also vindicated after all the suffering he caused.

The Titan is available for streaming on Netflix, but I'd advise you avoid this aimless slog.

The winners in senior football: Emerald, Mt Evelyn, Monbulk, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Healesville, Alexandra, Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Seville.

A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Warburton-Millgrove, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Monbulk Hawks, Woori Yallock, Kinglake, Seville and Yea. And the Winners in the Reserves were Emerald, Mt Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville, Alexandra, Powelltown, Yea & a draw between Yarra Junction & Seville.

The Under 18s Winners were Alexandra, Mt Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Woori Yallock and Gembrook-Cockatoo.

Division 1 Seniors Football Emerald 17.20.122 d Belgrave 12.10.82 Emerald have given themselves a bit of breathing space towards the bottom of the ladder after a good win over Belgrave. Belgrave got the early lead kicking 4.1 to 2.5 in the first and a lead of eight points at quarter-time. Both sides kicked four majors in the second; the game was evenly poised at the main break with Belgrave holding a slim lead of six points. Emerald took control in the third with a 16-point turnaround to go into the last quarter with a 10-point buffer. It was all Emerald in the last piling on 6.5 to 1.5 to come away 40-point winners in the end.

Monbulk came out inspired in the third and kicked 4.3 to 1.1 to increase their lead to 25 points at three-quarter time. Upwey-Tecoma won the last quarter by 1 point, but it was Monbulk who would sing the song tonight.

Woori Yallock could not get their game going at all in the third only managing 4 behinds, but Healesville took control with 2.3 to have what was going to be a lead that Woori could not chase down. They exploded in the second, kicking 9.4 to 1 straight to have the game all sewn up at half-time with a lead of 84 points. Unfortunately, Thornton were held scoreless in the third as all the play was in Alexandra's forward line where they piled on 8.4 and went into the last well in command.

The last quarter was the biggest with 10.9 being kicked. Alexandra had 13 goalkickers in all for the day.

Outstanding team shines

By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes travelled to Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, on Saturday for the Little Athletics Victoria Cross Country Relay Championships.

Teams of three took turns completing a lap of the testing Cruden Farm circuit, along with over 100 other athletes from around Victoria.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had three teams competing, with each team bring a mix of athletes from various age groups. The club was represented in Girls Under 10s and Under 14s and Boys Under 13s.

Every athlete ran exceptionally well, resulting in some outstanding individual performances and team results. The Under 10s Girls team of Steph Van Bemmel, Eva Johnson and Zoe Clarke combined to finish in 10th place out of 23 teams in their three times 1km relay.

Eva and zoe are Udner 9s athletes so were running up a grade.

The Under 14s girls team of Mia Strudley, Bethany Whitelaw and Indigo Linde were convincing winners of their three times 2km relay.

An even more impressive performance considering Bethany was running up two grades and Indigo up one grade. Well done to the latest Victorian State Champions! The Uner 13s Boys team of Zac Clarke, Bailey Van Bert and Ky Harris finished their three times 2km in 8th place. Both Ky and Bailey were running up a grade so an outstanding result in a very competitive age group.

Well done to all the brave athletes and supporters who turned up to enjoy the sunshine when it arrived. Next week the club is at Margaret Lewis Reserve, Coldstream.

Everyone is welcome to join in and run which ever distance you like. Why not bring a friend, neighbour or parent to have a go.

A reminder that Region Cross Country Champiosnhips are coming up on 23 June.

The club really wants to see everyone running on a great course around Ruffey Lake, Doncaster.

All teams travelled away today as the club heads into the halfway mark of the season.

The teams are continuing to play competitive football and enjoying the crisp morning starts before the rain sets in.

Teams are improving - but so are the opposition.

Four quarters of football and teamwork are needed for the rest of the footy year.

Go Hawks Under 9s A tremendous effort by the team. They got to the ball first and worked hard all game. They shared the ball well and looked after their teammates. Very proud of the Under 9s.

The 42nd Historic Winton was a huge hit on the weekend, with more than 10,000 people in attendance from all over the state and Australia.

Organising committee member Paul Goethel said huge crowds flocked to the event.

"We had perfect weather, the crowds piled in and the riders and drivers enjoyed the great competition and camaraderie that Historic Winton is famous for," he said.

"Accommodation in the region was at capacity, as eateries and cafes benefited from the mass inflows of motor enthusiasts.

"The historic car, motorbike and sidecar races were thrill a minute as each era of vehicle sped around Winton Motor Raceway."

Some notable race cars on the track included: a 1957 Morris Minor Special, Formula Junior 1962 Lynx, 1963 Toron, 1953 Allard J2X and 1937 DKW F7 Special.

Some cars reached an average speed of more than 195km/h with lap times as low as 56 seconds.

A record number of vintage motorbikes entered the HMRAV races with 135 bikes racing across four categories.

The crowd was enthralled by the twists and turns of the sidecar races on the Winton short track.

The Sunday Parade lap was a real spectacle, showcasing pristine historic cars, antique fire engines, retro police cars and a strong show of Austin Healey Bugeyed Sprites.

A large heritage display of rare vintage and veteran cars attracted crowds in the competition paddock Strong support was given by Vintage Drivers Club, Ford Model T and A Clubs, and the Veteran Car Club of Australia, as well as many others.

Car, motorbike, truck and caravan enthusiasts travelled to Historic Winton in their own pride and joy vehicles, forming a 2500-plus showcase, which may well be Australia's largest show 'n' shine.

Also on show was an extensive steam-engine display, classic commercial trucks and vintage caravans.

The Car of the Meeting Award and Best Presented Regularity Car was won by Kathrynna Barnes in her 1933 Barnes three-wheeler special.

Fastest Car of the Meeting was won by David Hardman, who clocked the 56 second time in his Hardman JH-1.

Since Historic Winton has been presented for 42 years by the Austin Seven Club, in association with the HMRAV, a trophy for the fastest Austin Seven is awarded.

This year's went to Stuart Steinfort with a lap time of 1.22s.
