Geelong’s council will pick through bins from 225 randomly selected households after announcing plans to eliminate waste going to landfills.

The findings would help improve waste services and assist the development of “education programs”, City Hall said this week.

The City planned to run the bin “audits” over the next two months to achieve “a better understanding of how residents use their household rubbish, recycling and green waste bins”.

Waste trucks would collect audit bins as usual before together the contents from numerous households to create “samples” of rubbish, recycling and green waste.

“These bin audits are for research purposes and will not lead to any penalties or investigations,” the City said.

“No identifiable details or personal information will be reported as part of the audits so that residents’ privacy is protected.

“Residents in certain areas will receive a letter letting them know that they may be selected to take part in the bin audits. Residents don’t need to do anything if they are selected to participate.”

Residents who refused to participate or who wanted more information could contact council, City Hall said.

“The bin audits will help us capture an everyday picture of how residents use their household rubbish, recycling and green waste bins,” said council’s environment and sustainability portfolio-holder, Cr Sarah Mansfield.

“Bin audits are used by a number of councils nation-wide and are one of the most effective ways of researching waste disposal habits and recycling knowledge. We will then use this valu-

able information to guide our Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2018-23.”

The audit announcement follows council last week revealing that the strategy would seek to eliminate landfill “altogether”.

Council would “take the lead” under the strategy while supporting the households “to achieve the same”.

“Zero waste to landfill is an ambitious aim but one greater Geelong is committed to achieving by showing leadership in this area and providing support for the community in reducing its own waste,” Mayor Bruce Harwood said.

“It will require creative thinking and for everyone to take individual responsibility for the waste they generate.”

City Hall said the strategy was “in line” with council commitments after becoming in 2015 one of three Australian councils with One Planet Living certification from Bioregional Australia.

Bioregional Australia describes itself as a not-for-profit, independent organisation advocating for “a better, more sustainable way to live”.

“We work with partners to create better places for people to live, work and do business,” the organisation’s website says.

Bioregional Australia says One Planet Living is its “vision of the world where everyone, everywhere can live happy, healthy lives within the limits of our planet, leaving space for wildlife and wilderness”.

The organisation operates under licence from the UK’s Bioregional Development Group, a charity with other “sister organisations” in South Africa, Mexico and Greece.

But Leopold dog trainer Sophie Noss said shutting down troubled off-leash areas should be a last resort.

“Council should be promoting responsible ownership rather than restricting access because a few people don’t do the right thing.”

The onus was on owners to understand their dog’s behaviour, Ms Noss said. “‘My dog’s friendly’ is the worst phrase in pet ownership. Unless you’re willing to bet $1000 your dog will come back when off leash if you call then it’s not under effective control.”

Council should instead better educate owners, Ms Noss said.

Geelong Dog Social Group’s Kyrelee Dine described fenced off-leash areas like Stead Park as “fantastic”.

However, Stead Park could also be a “freefor-all” that exposed dogs to aggressive or unvaccinated counterparts, she said.

Geelong Dog Obedience Club secretary Christine Jagtenberg had mixed feelings.

“The off-lead parks are great for dogs to stretch out and socialise,” she said.

But many of her home visits were for dogs that had traumatic experiences at parks, she said.

“It might be worth having fenced-off areas for larger dogs so smaller dogs don’t feel intimidated.”

Council this week opened public consultation for its Dogs in Public Places Policy and Dog Park Strategy. The feedback would shape decisions on areas where council might prohibit dogs to protect people or the environment, City Hall’s Linda Quinn said.

Council would also examine where people walked dogs, existing controls and whether additional fenced parks were needed, she said.

“We want to hear from people with and without dogs because it’s important these spaces are safe and appealing for everyone.”

Lobby to cover cost of ‘free’ ferry rides

By Luke Voogt A local community group has urged residents to climb aboard a free trial of a Geelong-Melbourne ferry in July.

A successful trial would give the city a “very important” travel alternative, according to Geelong Connected Communities executive Pat Murnane.

“We think it’s terrific for Geelong,” he said.

“We’ve been a car-dependent city in the past and transport options are something Geelong really needs to explore into the future.”

The non-profit group joined several local businesses, government bodies and community organisations pledging support as partners of the trial this week.

Mr Murnane declined to state the amount his organisation would contribute to the trial.

But Geelong Connected Communities would disclose the amount at a later date for “transparency“, he said.

“Our involvement is to provide the option for the community.”

Mr Murnane, also a Geelong councillor, encouraged residents to see if the service worked for them.

“It would be fantastic for people to actually experience what the trial will offer,” he said.

“Just be adventurous, go on the trial and see if it fits your lifestyle.”

The trials would help determine the future of permanent high-speed ferry services, said Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson.

“The Committee for Geelong is very pleased to have signed this agreement with Port Phillip Ferries,” she said.

“We believe (that) Geelong commuters will definitely welcome and embrace this new way of travelling to work.”

Ms Casson said the committee funded the trial but she declined to reveal the cost because of “commercial in confidence” issues.

She also declined to detail individual partners’ contributions but said they would include promotion, financial support and encouraging employees to use the service.

Port Phillip Ferries will run the two trial services from central Geelong to Docklands in late July.

The ferry had free Wi-Fi, chargers, small meeting tables and refreshments on board, Ms Casson said.

Port Phillip Ferries chief executive officer Murray Rance welcomed support for the trial.

“Port Phillip Ferries look forward to creating opportunities not only for daily commuters, but also the leisure and business markets,” he said.

“We are confident we can add value to people’s lives via this service, as we have already witnessed within the Bellarine Peninsula community.”

Passengers could book a free ticket for the trial at Port Phillip Ferries’ website in coming weeks, the company announced.

The company will collect a gold coin donation from passengers to go to a local charity.

The trip from Geelong to Docklands took about one hour and 40 minutes, a company spokesperson said.

Appy days ahead on the road to recovery A Geelong West woman has overcome six weeks comatose with a brain injury to assist in developing technology for rehabilitating road-accident victims.

Katherine Johnston had to relearn basic tasks after her own crash, which left her a client of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Guide Dogs Victoria.

Eight years later she has helped unveil iReach, an app for patients to communicate with rehabilitation workers and store vital information during the healing process.

Ms Johnston used a TAC-supplied iPad to develop the app with rehabilitation providers during her long road back toward independence.

The TAC last week announced a $49,000 grant for Guide Dogs Victoria to continue developing iReach.

Some of app functions include personalised messaging between users and rehabilitation providers, sharing and communicating client updates, storing appointments and care instructions, a GPS function for users’ navigation, and automated reminders of appointments.

The app also provides audio and visual assistance for users, including video guidance for therapy tasks.

“I have trouble remembering important details and my iPad became my third arm to help me when I was out by myself,” Ms Johnston explained.

“My carers and my therapists use it to leave notes for each other or to easily share information.”

Geelong’s council will produce honey with a “working bee hive” on City Hall’s rooftop.

Council expects to harvest up to 25kg of honey from 30,000 bees this spring in an arrangement with a Surf Coast business to raise bee “awareness”.

Scratchie holiday A Geelong man’s $1 scratchie birthday present has turned to a $10,000 windfall overnight, according to a Tatts spokesperson.

The winner planned to use the money for a family holiday in Tasmania after his partner bought the ticket on his birthday and he claimed his prize the following day, the spokesperson said.

DOUBLE TAKE They copped criticism at the time but unlikely claims that City Hall’s proposed cycling network is sexist and elitist have found international support.

Grovedale health economist Dr Katrina Alford got lycra pants in a knot when she told the Indy in March that inner-city cycling was almost-exclusively the domain of “young-ish…well-paid” men.

She based her claims on Census figures but that didn’t stop protests in response that the paths would in fact unleash a veritable peloton of female, elderly and childhood riders in Geelong.

However, a report in the UK’s Independent shows that certainly hasn’t been the case in London.

The city’s ‘walking and cycling commissioner’ told the paper this week that London’s Geelong-like Cycle Superhighway project was really about “middleaged men cycling faster around the city”.

Will Norman acknowledged London’s “gender divide” among cyclists, noting the city’s few women riders despite its cycling infrastructure.

“Even when we have seen the growth in the number of cyclists we haven’t seen that diversity,” he said.

London cycling was possibly even racist, the commissioner suggested, with minority groups accounting for only 15 per cent of bicycle trips.

Sexist and racist, eh? Looks like City Hall’s cycling network might end up at the Human Rights Commission rather than Waurn Ponds!

Skills set to shine A Lara trainee will put his mechatronics skills to the test against some of Australia’s best emerging tradies at a national competition in Sydney.

Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Miller will stay on the tools over the weekend as he competes at the WorldSkills National Championship, at Darling Harbour’s International Convention Centre from Saturday to Monday.

He will be among a field of more than 400 competitors from around Australia competing in 50 trade and skills categories. Mr Miller’s mechatronics category calls for skills combining mechanical engineering and electronics.

An employee of Barwon Water undergoing trade studies at Gordon Institute of TAFE, Mr Miller was looking forward to the WorldSkills challenge after earning his place in regional competition last year.

“Being chosen to compete at Skills Show 2018 in the national championships is such an honour and I can’t wait to see what I can achieve,” he said.

BirdLife Australia volunteers and City Hall are toasting their success with this year’s hooded plover breeding season after six chicks survived between Point Lonsdale to Breamlea.

Six might seem few but is in fact a big number given the numerous threats to the hoodies’ parlous population of only 570 in south-east Victoria. Given they nest on the sand, often at popular beaches, it’s amazing any of the birds reach takeoff stage.

Along with the troops doing the hard work, beachgoers also earned a pat on the back this week for taking care around identified nests.

Two fined after footy ‘riot’

By Luke Voogt Police have fined two men over an ugly brawl allegedly involving a glassing at GMHBA Stadium during Saturday night’s Cats game.

Children cried as a man bled from the alleged glassing attack in Stella Artois Lounge, according to reports earlier this week.

Police confirmed Geelong Crime Investigation Unit was investigating an incident involving a number of males at the licensed premises but declined to provide further details.

Police issued a 27-year-old man from Bannockburn and 37-year-old man from Armstrong Creek with penalty notices for riotous behaviour, a spokesperson said.

Witnesses also reported disorderly fans punching and kicking a car after the game.

Police investigated the incident but “upon attending the scene no offence was detected,” a spokesperson said.

Geelong Football Club warned fans they could lose their membership for violent or inappropriate behaviour.

The club had revoked or suspended memberships in the past where appropriate under its constitution, a spokesperson said.

“Once these incidents have been reviewed, our club will determine what, if any, further action is appropriate.”

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust was also inves-

tigating the incidents, acting chief executive officer Natalie Valentine said.

“The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust’s primary objective is to ensure the safety and security of all patrons and therefore, we take unacceptable crowd behaviour very seriously.”

Ms Valentine said the trust would continue to work with the licensees to uphold strict rules and regulations.

The trust was working with Victoria Police and the AFL’s Integrity Unit to review the stadium’s security arrangements and procedures, she added.

North West Metro Region Acting Commander David Clayton on Sunday said police would bolster their presence at football games

this weekend.

He warned violent fans could face not only criminal charges but also bans of two years from licenced premises.

“The vast majority (of fans) support their teams and enjoy themselves in an atmosphere of safety and responsibly,” he said.

“Unfortunately on occasion there are a few individuals who choose to do the wrong thing, and that’s what we’ve seen take place in recent weeks.

“Let it be clear - police will not tolerate any poor behaviour at sporting matches and people will be held accountable for their actions.”

Di’s marsupial orphans care all ‘sewn up’

By Luke Voogt Local baby marsupials will snuggle into toasty woollen pouches this winter thanks to the sewing efforts of elderly residents like Di Baker.

The Torquay local was delighted to meet baby kangaroo Skip on Tuesday at a Uniting respite centre in Belmont.

“He’s gorgeous. I can’t help but want to kiss him!” she said.

The self-professed animal-lover said both tales of cruelty and kindness to local wildlife inspired her to get sewing.

“You can’t help but love animals when you come from a farm area,” she said.

“I’ve got a mini foxy Jack Russell and I love him to the bones - the way he sits and looks at you and pushes you with his paws.

“Those other animals like wombats have a way of talking to us too - I’m sure they do.”

The shooting earlier this year of a kangaroo with a bow and arrow while it was nursing a joey disgusted Di. “What makes people do these things I don’t know - animals have got just as much right to the world as we have.“

But Di, who has sewed since she was a kid, is helping orphaned joeys with her skills.

“If helps them and they think they’re back with their mum that’s a good thing,” the 68-year-old said.

“Bushfires might come along and they might lose their mother - baby animals lose their mothers all the time.”

She saw the work Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary does for joeys like Skip when she visited 2012.

“I’ve been through there with my husband when he was alive.”

Geelong is set to become Australia’s “hemp hub” after the installation of a secret dehuller at a Newtown warehouse, a producer announced this week.

The imported dehuller was the only machinery of its type in Australia according to Australian Primary Hemp.

The installation of the machinery had created 11 jobs in Geelong, the company’s logistics manager Mitch Costin said.

“Three additional staff members, including myself, (started) since the new year,” he said.

A further eight casual staff were packing hulled hemp seed in jobs created by the machinery’s installation, Mr Costin said.

“And this doesn’t even include the influx of work our local couriers are seeing.”

But due to “the importance of this type of machinery” the company was not allowed to publish photos or specifications of the dehuller, a spokesperson said.

The machinery was processing hemp from farms across Australia, with the majority coming from unspecified locations in western Victoria, the spokesperson said.

The closest farm to Geelong was located near the Derrinallum, they said.

The machinery solidified “our coastal town” as one of the most innovative hemp hubs in Australia, the company’s director of operations James Hood said.

Geelong held the first Australian Industrial Hemp Conference earlier this year after the Federal Government legalised the crop as a food in November 2017.

“The town is definitely benefiting from the success of hemp,” Mr Hood said.

The company’s sales director Skye Patterson said the demand for hulled hemp seed had “boomed” since the installation of the machinery.

A Clifton Springs man will face serious driving charges over a crash that killed 16-year-old Barwon Heads girl Sarah Crimmins last November.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives this week charged the charged 20-year-old Liam Davis with culpable driving following the fatal crash at Gellibrand on 11 November The man was driving a four-wheel-drive on Frys Road just after 2.30pm when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle then rolled, killing rear-seat passenger Sarah. Her 18-year-old sister, Louise, sustained minor injuries as the front-seat passenger during the crash.

Louise attempted to revive her younger sister until paramedics arrived, according to the pair's father, Graham Crimmins.

Mr Davis, who was Louise's boyfriend at the time, also sustained minor injuries in the crash.

He allegedly had backyard repairs done to the car and chose to have the brake disabled rather than repaired before the crash, Newscorp reported yesterday.

The Lorne incident was among a number of thefts from local liquor retailers in recent weeks, with the most recent involving a heist from Belmont’s Ban Murphy’s on Sunday.

Police alleged that two unknown women entered the Belmont story around 4.30pm when they “selected” two bottles of vodka and a 10-pack of Woodstock cans.

The pair then left “without making payment”.

Police valued the haul at $120.

Barwon Health indicated it would deploy the additional staff to cover a shortfall in elective surgery resources, replace agency casuals and fill vacant positions.

“Barwon Health has been hiring two operating theatres from Geelong Private over the past few months to help address its elective surgery waiting list,” a spokesperson said.

“The arrangement involved HealthScope nursing, support staff and Barwon Health doctors. Barwon Health will hire HealthScope staff to maintain this service.”

The new HealthScope staff would also help Barwon Health avoid the 50 per cent premium on payment for agency staff to cover short-notice absences, the spokesperson said.

The new supply of staff would expand Barwon Health’s “casual pool”, reducing the service’s reliance on agencies.

“We are also encouraging Geelong Private Hospital staff to apply for many of the vacancies that we have at present,” the spokesperson said.

“We will now be able to use this pool of quality staff to fill remaining open positions.

At any given time we have up to 60 vacancies at Barwon Health.”

HealthScope announced this month that Geelong Private had become “unviable”. The company is due to complete operations at the hospital this month.

Barwon Plan has announced it will take over the site, opposite its Ryrie St public hospital, to provide maternal and paediatric services.

The building operated as public Baxter House Maternity Hospital from 1954 until HealthScope took over in the late 1990s.

A thief with a taste for fine wine has stolen four bottles of Penfold’s Grange from a Lorne supermarket, police have alleged.

Investigators valued the haul at $2842 as they released images surveillance camera images of a potential suspect and a vehicle he was driving at the time.

Police posted the images on social media with an appeal for help to identify the “unknown” man.

The thief removed locked security doors to remove the Grange from a wine cabinet in the Food Works liquor hall at 8.30am on 16 May, police alleged.

The man then allegedly helped himself to three bottles of 2012 Grange worth $728 each and a 2004 bottle valued at $658.

Staff agencies are set to be the loser when Barwon Health accepts 117 workers from the closure of Geelong Private Hospital, State Government has revealed.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy’s office told the Indy this week that Barwon Health would make room for the former HealthScope employees “by converting agency positions to permanent jobs.

The move would bring back in-house jobs that had been “subcontracted out”.

The minister’s office supplied the explanation this week after Liberal MP Simon Ramsay questioned the “legitimacy” of Barwon Health accepting so many additional jobs.

The intake indicated either that Barwon Health was severely under-staffed or the Andrews Government was blowing out Victoria’s public service wages by another $9 million, Mr Ramsay said.

“Does Barwon Health pay for this or will the state have to pump more money in?” he asked.

A spokesperson for Ms Hennessy said the HealthScope staff only lost their jobs because the Liberals “crowded the market” when they green-lighted another private hospital at Waurn Ponds when last in government.

“It seems everyone but the Liberals are happy to see our hard-working health services staff find the positions they deserve after what’s been a challenging period,” the spokesperson said.

“The Geelong Private Hospital is closing because the Liberals broke a promise to build a second public hospital for Geelong and instead threw a third private provider into the market.”

PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC DRINKING FOUNTAINS We’ve now completed testing of our public drinking fountains and have found 80 with levels of lead above the Federal Government’s National Health and Medical Research Council Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. All affected public drinking fountains have now been turned off. A complete list of deactivated public drinking fountains, and more information on this matter, is available at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/publicdrinkingfountains.

We’ve been advised that the water supplied by Barwon Water is completely safe to drink.

This is not an issue related to the quality of water supplied by Barwon Water. This is an issue with public drinking fountain infrastructure.

We’re conducting a thorough investigation into this situation, and are working the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Barwon Water and the Victorian Building Authority to identify the root cause of the lead found in our public drinking fountain water, and the appropriate action that needs to be taken. This is an extensive investigation and may take some time to complete. We’ll continue to keep the community updated.

People don’t need to worry if they’ve recently used a public drinking fountain in Greater Geelong. While the levels of lead detected are above the health guideline value in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, they are not of immediate concern as drinking water fountains are not the main source of drinking water.

Light at end of the tunnel for ’net use

By Luke Voogt A one-minute mobile black hole at the Geelong Railway Station tunnel will cease to frustate commuters by July, Telstra has announced.

Public Transport Users Association Geelong convener Paul Westcott welcomed plans to remove the “black hole” as part of an $18 million State Government investment. “(Currently) you lose your mobile for less than a minute which in the scheme of things is minimal,” he said.

“But it is - in principle - the right thing to do if you’re going to have good coverage from one end of the line to the other.”

Mr Westcott described the improvement as minor compared to plans to fix a mobile phone dead zone stretching roughly 20 minutes from Lara to Tarneit.

Telstra is constructing two towers, at Little River and Tarneit, and is supporting the construction of another south of Little River.

The tunnel project and towers are part of an $18 million Victorian Government project to deliver mobile coverage to the state’s five busiest regional lines.

Telstra chief operations officer Robyn Denholm announced the plans for the tunnel at Geelong Railway Station on Monday.

“It’s something our customers have been asking for,” she said.

“Rail patronage is up and people want to use their devices in a reliable way on the train.

“On the Geelong line alone 7.62 million passenger trips were made last financial year.”

Victoria was the first Australian state to invest in on-train technology to repeat the signal from nearby mobile towers for passengers to access the network, Ms Denholm said.

Telstra, along with Optus and Vodafone, agreed to pay for the construction of the mobile towers at Little River and Tarneit while the Victorian Government will fund the repeaters.

A Telstra spokesperson declined to detail the funding arrangements for each project, stating they were commercial in confidence.

Woman ‘first’ at oil refinery A manager at Geelong’s oil refinery has won a first Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame award exclusively for women.

Viva Energy commercial manager Vanessa Kearney won the inaugural Woman Manufacturer of the Year title at an awards presentation in Melbourne on Monday night. The annual awards celebrated manufacturing companies and individuals for excellence in business innovation and productivity that contributed to strengthening Victoria’s economy, organisers said.

The new women’s category recognised “outstanding women working in the manufacturing industry, breaking down barriers and succeeding in their careers”.

Refinery general manager Thys Heyns was rapt with Ms Kearney’s “well-deserved accolade”.

“We are immensely proud of Vanessa’s achievement,” he said. “With more than 23 years of experience in the manufacturing and energy sectors she has played a key role in driving the commercial performance of the Geelong refinery.”

Mr Henys said the “tremendous recognition” for Ms Kearny demonstrated the company’s commitment to “drive real change on workplace gender equality”.

The Turnbull Government is “politicising” Geelong’s City Deal agreement at the expense of other cities around Australia, according to the federal opposition.

Regional development shadow minister Anthony Albanese accused the government was “prioritising some cities ahead of others based on the electoral cycle”.

“At senate estimates (last) week the Cities Division was unable to confirm precisely when Darwin, Hobart and Perth would finalise their City Deals but was explicit that Geelong would receive its City Deal in September or October this year. Coincidentally, this is just ahead of the Victorian State Election in November,” Mr Albanese said.

“This follows a string of other remarkable coincidences including the announcement of a Hobart City Deal in the lead up to the Tasmanian State election. And, of course, we already know that the Townsville, Launceston and Western Sydney City Deals were announced during the 2016 federal election campaign and largely mirrored commitments already made by Labor.

“In the meantime, Darwin has been left to linger, with its MoU signed this time last year but no finish line in sight for an actual City Deal.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and then-acting Premier James Merlino signed Geelong’s City Deal, Victoria’s first, in January.

The three-way agreements between each level of government are intended to advance regional priority projects, with Geelong’s focussing on initiatives such as revitalising the city

centre and upgrading the Great Ocean Road.

City Deals should ideally provide an opportunity for “genuine collaboration” across the three tiers of government without consideration of electoral cycles, Mr Albanese said.

“But in practice, the Coalition’s City Deals are a far cry from this model and instead a reflection of political convenience.

“Australian cities need real investment and leadership from the Commonwealth so that they are productive, sustainable and liveable places well into the future.”

The Liberals’ federal Liberal MP for Corgangamite rejected Mr Albanese’s allegations of playing politics, saying the Turnbull Government’s City Deal demonstrated “very strong commitment to Geelong and our region”.

“The only one playing politics is the state Labor government,” Sarah Henderson said.

She accused Labor of holding up the Geelong deal as the Andrews Government stalled on local priorities.

“Regrettably, progress on the City Deal has been frustrated because Labor refused, for many months, to hand over business plans for the convention centre, the Shipwreck Coast Masterplan project and the rail duplication between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong,” Ms Henderson said.

“It has also declined to provide matching funding for the rail duplication, which is central to our City Deal. That said, I am hoping we can conclude a City Deal as soon as possible.”

LETTERS A market failure…

Access to heating, cooking and hot water is a basic human right in a modern society yet many Victorians are denied this by an inefficient and incompetent energy industry wrongfully disconnecting energy consumers, often leaving them without heating, cooking and hot water for days.

The dismantling of the former State Electricity Commission and sale of its assets, as well as the sale of the former publicly-owned Gas Corporation, has resulted in a privatised gas and electricity industry dominated by corporate monopolies accountable to no one.

The Essential Services Commission, which is supposed to control prices charged by the monopolies, acts as a rubber stamp for the monopolies. The result of privatisation is sky-rocketing gas and electricity prices, poor infrastructure management, unreliability of supply, and wrongful disconnections.

What is required is the rebuilding of a publicly-owned State Energy Supply Commission, which will be far more efficient at delivering energy supply to Victorians than the current broken system.

…or a regulatory failure To limit carbon dioxide emissions 195 nations, including Australia, signed the Paris Accord in 2015 but, as developing nations are exempt and the USA has withdrawn, only 30 per cent of nations are left to “save the planet”.

As developing nations, China is building 299 coal power generators and India is building 132.

Altogether 1600 are being built or planned in 62 countries, many using Australian coal!

Most of Australia’s remaining coal power generators are operating beyond their design life but Australia isn't building any more.

This year Australia will subsidise wind and solar by $3.8 billion, equivalent to $380 per household and added to our power bills. Preference for wind and solar power is forcing the premature closure of coal generators and doubling wholesale power prices. Every week 1000 Victorian electricity and gas customers are disconnected, unable to pay their bills.

Downtown in Clark tribute

HEADIN' DOWNTOWN: Melbourne songstress Melissa Langton debuts her tribute to Petula Clark in Geelong this month.

Melissa Langton’s fascination with pop legend Petula Clark began as a child watching the classic 1969 film Goodbye Mr Chips.

“It was my all-time favourite movie as a kid,” she told the Indy on Monday.

The fascination has continued through decades of touring internationally with tribute act The Fabulous Singlettes.

“We do quite a number of her songs - everybody knows who she is,” she said. “She spans the '50s, the '60s. I think she still performs, to be honest.“ But Downtown will be Langton’s first show dedicated to solely to the pop icon when it debuts at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) this month.

“Her style is quite happy and chirpy - what I love about her is she was so much fun,” she said during break from rehearsals.

Stories of Clark’s childhood have inspired Langton. She and fellow entertainment legend Julie Andrews started their careers travelling on trains together with troops around England to sing in wartime gigs.

“They used to sleep up in the luggage racks on the train,” Langton said.

As a young woman Clark sounded “like Doris Day” at first but soon “created her own style in an industry dominated in by men,“ she said.

Clark would go on to record classics like Don’t Sleep in the Subway, This is My Song and Downtown.

She topped the charts during the height of Beatlemania and starred onscreen and onstage.

Downtown featured songs from both Clark’s acting and musical careers, Langton said.

Ironically, Clark played Maria von Trapp in a 1980s West End production, after her childhood friend made the character famous - a fact not lost on Langton.

“We’re going to do a bit of Sound of Music,” she said.

Langton herself has had a prolific career in music and on stage, acting in Australian remakes of Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, The Pirates of Penzance and more.

She has performed cabaret originals and tribute gigs from New York to Auckland.

“The highlight of my job, in general, is I get to travel,” she said.

“It does my head in slightly sometimes - some days I might be doing Petula, other days I’ll be doing jazz Broadway.“ But nothing matched performing in Germany, especially in local Speigeltents, Langton said.

“We (The Fabulous Singlettes) do a Germany tour every year.

“Germans just love cabaret and tribute shows - I’ve never been to venues as lovely as the cabaret venus in Berlin.”

Langton said Downtown would be her first GPAC gig.

She will perform with a three piece band, including husband Mark Jones, on 13 June before returning the next day for another show.

Kids’ classic bounds back Josephine the kangaroo dances off the page and onto the stage when a classic Aussie children’s tale comes to Geelong next Saturday.

Sydney’s Monkey Baa Theatre Company brings Jackie French’s award-winning book, Josephine Wants to Dance, to life for two shows at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC).

Josephine loves to dance but her little brother Joey tells her, ‘kangaroos don’t dance, they hop’.

When a ballet troupe comes to the sleepy town of Shaggy Gully, Josephine learns that there is another way to dance - ballet.

As the ballet company prepares to perform, Josephine sneaks into town and watches the troupe rehearse for hours through a window.

Then she goes home and practices alone all night until she knows the dance by heart.

She desperately wants to dance like the ballerinas in pink tutus and silk ballet shoes.

On the day of the first performance the ballet company is in trouble: the prima ballerina has twisted her ankle and the understudy has a splinter in her toe!

Can Josephine save the day?

French’s 2006 book is a delightfully funny tale about self belief and chasing dreams.

Promoters described this onstage adaption as perfect for children aged 4 to 9 and their families.

Josephine Wants to Dance plays at GPAC’s Drama Theatre at 12 and 2.30pm on 16 June, with free craft activities in the foyer after each show.

DANCE HITS: Spectrum and Radiance perform Songs in the key of Motown.

Motown to hit town The songs of Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 and more will hit the Geelong stage tonight in a tribute to world-famous record label Motown.

US tribute acts Spectrum and Radiance joined forces several years ago to create Songs in the Key of Motown, which tours Australia until the end of June.

The male and female trios will take Geelong locals on a musical journey through the ’60s, ’70s and onwards with the hits which made the American label iconic.

Spectrum’s three singers hail from across the US and their backgrounds are as diverse

as their voices.

The group includes singers E.C. Adams and Dru Young, along with Cushney Roberts, a Princeton-educated engineer who left corporate life to perform in Las Vegas.

Radiance features experienced entertainers Lyrehc Jordan, Wendy Edmead and Marque Munday, a former member of the iconic dance group the Radio City Rockettes.

The group’s repertoire includes Motown classics like Stop In The Name Of Love, Please Mr. Postman and more.

Together the six soul singers take a trip down memory lane from The Temptations and The Supremes to Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.

Direct from Las Vegas, Songs in the Key of Motown features the choreography, costumes and harmonies of the artists who rose to fame with Motown.

The show has toured the world and visited Australia annually for the last six years.

Songs in the Key of Motown comes to The Playhouse at Geelong Performing Arts Centre 8pm.

Cool for Cats If Kieser is good enough for the Cats it’s good enough for everyone in Geelong, says manager Richard Wallace.

“We’ve got players using the facilities with referrals from their medical team,” the Belmont physio says.

“The next person to get on the machine might be an 80-year-old lady.”

After 15 years in physiotherapy, including a stint as Western Bulldogs rehab manager, Richard returned to Geelong when Kieser opened at Newtown nearly four years ago.

“We used to take some Bulldogs players into the South Melbourne Kieser centre and I could see the difference it made to their strength and performance.”

Swiss boxer Werner Kieser invented the rehabilitation method in 1966 after using strength training to overcome injury.

Today, more than 600 members of all ages practice Kieser’s method at the Geelong centre, to recover from injuries and to become healthier.

The program also helps prevent injuries reoccurring by strengthening weakened muscles.

All Kieser instructors are qualified in physiotherapy, exercise physiology or exercise science, Richard says.

Since the introduction of changes to Centrelink’s asset test on 1 January 2017, Kings Funerals has noticed an increase in the numbers of pre-paid funeral bonds purchased.

Kings' Julie Spriggs said it was envisaged that over 300,000 Australians would have been affected by these changes.

“Some people don't know that funeral bonds, to the current maximum limit of $12,750, are exempt from Centrelink’s asset test,” she said.

“Victoria has six different providers of funeral bonds. If bonds are arranged through a funeral director,they can also be linked with a pre-paid funeral contract.”

The bonds can be held in individual or joint names and health checks or age restrictions do not apply, Ms Spriggs said.

“When applying for pension benefits, if you have too many assets you may be disadvantaged.

“For the purposes of the assets test and deeming provisions of both social security and veterans’ entitlements legislation the investment is not deemed an asset so it could help maximise your pension entitlements.

“Talking to your financial adviser could be advantageous in working out whether this pertains to you or not.

Styling of the Infiniti QX has been toned down and is now admired by many.

New Infiniti’s ‘power play’

By Ewan Kennedy Infiniti’s extra-large QX80 has had a major facelift and a number of stylish interior updates.

Previously the shape had been a bit - dare we say - Japanese and wasn't always to the taste of Australian or Americans. Most sales are to these two nationalities so the changes are likely to make it more appealing in this country, and perhaps increase sales, because they have been rather slow to date.

This is more than your routine facelift, everything forward of the windscreen has been revised, not just the easy-to-reshape plastic bits.

The bonnet is 20mm higher and has been extended forward by 90mm, the grille is taller and broader. The tailgate, taillights, chrome bar and rear bumper have also been redesigned. The QX80 sits on large new-design 22-inch forged aluminium-alloy wheels, up from 20s on the old model.

Overall, the look is certainly different and not as challenging as previously. Those who commented on our test car all liked the new look.

The topline Infiniti has an updated instrument panel as well as the centre and rear-centre consoles. Seat and door trim quilting, stitching and piping have been refreshed, and there is a now a contrasting coloured double-stitch design on the centre arm rest.

The Japanese SUV has Bluetooth connectivity. We loved the output from the Bose Surround audio system. The rear entertainment screens have been increased from 7.0 to 8.0 inches as part of the QX80’s makeover. The large symbols on the central screen minimise the time you have to take your eyes off the roads.

Infiniti QX80 is powered by a large 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine. It has an impressive 298 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque. That’s good old fashioned grunt. Power is sent to all four wheels by way of a seven-speed automatic transmission and Infiniti’s All-Mode 4WD system.

Towing capacity is listed at 3500 kg.

Big snapper taken in bay ON THE BITE Adam Van Der Lugt Corio Bay give up a number of quality snapper over the past week, with whispers of fish to 10kg caught.

Knowing that persistence and fishing light is the key coming into winter, successful anglers opted for baits such as unweighted pilchard and garfish.

Pinkies remained the drawcard around the inner-harbour, though, with the average size around 35cm. Soft plastics and bait both caught fish.

Geelong’s waterfront was again productive for land-based anglers targeting pinkies. Flathead, red mullet and black bream were taken as bycatch.

The Alcoa spoil grounds were worth visiting. Anglers reported catching pinkies, although the area can also produce snapper around 3kg to 4kg at this time of year.

Squid were present in good numbers from Clifton Springs right around to Queenscliff. Fishing over the weed beds in 2.5m to 4m resulted in bag-limit captures within an hour.

The Barwon River estuary hosted some fantastic mulloway fishing when tides permitted. Nathan Wright went to the effort of collecting fresh squid over the weekend for bait but in the end it was a live mullet that had his rod buckled over and his reel singing with a fish too big for his 1m-wide net and estimated at 110cm in length.

Nathan’s mulloway was one of a number reported as caught in the past week from the Barwon.

Tuna remained the target species for anglers heading offshore further west.

Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Portland were all worth visiting, with reports suggesting the school fish had moved further out towards the shelf in 120m to 200m of water.

Small skirted lures have accounted for a majority of tuna, although anglers who found fish busting up were able to catch them by casting small stick bait lures or seven-inch Gulp jerk shads.

A few anglers reported catching barrels, especially on the Tornado T7 lure.

On the freshwater scene, anglers chasing trout and redfin needed look no further than Lake Purrumbete. In fact, some of the successful anglers did incredibly well on brown trout in excess of 10lb.

Tim Beusmans fished mid-week for two trout of 11lb and 10lb 2oz along with a 46cm redfin nudging 4lb. A Rapala F11 lure in the Spotted Dog colour did the damage while flat-line trolling the lake margins of a morning.

Next door, Lake Bullen Merri produced rainbow trout and Chinook salmon on pilchard fillets and Powerbait. Anglers fishing for the salmon did best when using a burley of diced pilchard scraps.

Suns at home with Lynch back in side

By Justin Flynn Geelong will be the first team to play the Suns at Metricon Stadium this season.

The Cats will make the trip north to take on Gold Coast as the Suns finally get to play at their home ground after being the AFL nomads so far.

The Suns were unable to play at Metricon until now due to the Commonwealth Games.

Geelong’s unattractive but gritty win against Carlton put it into sixth position on the ladder.

Only percentage separates fifth placed North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, which sits ninth although with a game in hand.

The Suns are 15th and appear out of finals contention but there’s no doubt the side has improved under Stuart Dew. With power forward Tom Lynch back this week, the Suns are no easy beats.

The Cats will be without young forward Esava Ratugolea, who underwent surgery late on Sunday after suffering fractures to his fibula and tibia at the ankle in Saturday night’s win over Carlton.

The surgery resulted in a plate and screws inserted to stabilise the injury.

Options to replace Ratugolea include Wylie Buzza and Rhys Stanley.

Chris Scott has opted not to play Stanley and Zac Smith in the same side all year, but he may be forced to do so tomorrow.

Buzza had 16 disposals, nine marks and two goals in the VFL.

Aaron Black came into the side as a late replacement last week for Harry Taylor and he could keep his spot with Ratugolea out.

Perhaps the big talking point about this game is the return of Gary Ablett to his old side.

Ablett crossed to the Suns from Geelong as a marquee player, but then requested a trade back to his home town last year.

Geelong gave away 31 free kicks last week and coach Scott was left fuming at his side’s lack of discipline.

“I don’t think we helped ourselves much, I thought we were undisciplined at times (and) gave them a chance to get into the game,” Scott said post-match. “(To) give away free kicks inside the opposition’s forward 50, same as we did last week.

“Pick up the ball, throw it at a player after a free kick’s given. It’s pretty easy to explain.”

Boom Suns recruit Lachie Weller will play his first game in the red and gold while young gun Jack Martin will be keen to impress in Sir Doug Nicholls indigenous round.

The Suns won’t be a pushover and will be keen to put in a good display in front of their home fans for the first time in 2018.

And let’s face it, the Cats aren’t exactly in scintillating form.

Still, Geelong has much to play for with tough games against North Melbourne and Richmond to come before its bye.

Warriors strive to maintain return of form

Consolidating form will be of paramount focus for North Geelong Warriors as the side tries to keep its recent winning ways continuing in a round 15 clash away on Sunday against Nunawading City.

Nunawading recently added a big-name signing, with former A League player Fahid Ben Khalfallah joining two weeks ago to play alongside another former A League midfielder, Massimo Murdocca.

However, Nunawading has been unable to turn its richness of experience into scoreboard pressure, with a scoreless draw followed by a 6-0 loss to Moreland Zebras.

Meanwhile, the Warriors have solidified with two wins in a row, most recently a 2-0 victory against Murray United last weekend courtesy of goals from Julian Cassano and Darius Madison.

The Warriors responded to some difficulties in the past weeks, firstly their head coach resigning three weeks ago, then losing midfielder Damian Peters to the lure of NPL1, and midfielder Ryan Opperman being injured last weekend and likely to miss at least a week.

But around every corner is another opportunity and stepping up are players like Cassano who took his starting chance and performed well. Add to that the return of Michael Boyar from suspension and the side can settle into its focus required for the weekend’s match.

In further good news, the club has also confirmed that the head coach role has been settled. James Coutts, currently with Gold Coast United and previously coached Murray United in NPL2, will join the club as player/coach, pairing with Nathan Rogers who has steered the turnaround in form to be his assistant head coach.

The club is now looking to finalise its under-20 head coach role to continue the club’s emerging development, which took a positive step forward in a 2-0 win with goals to 16-yearold Gabriel Majic and Jesse Krasic. geelongindy.com.au
