Owner Gavin Sheedy accepted the finalist award on the 19 April at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre in Singapore.

Gavin’s father was one of the founding members of Autobarn and as a result Gavin has worked within the group from a young age, eventually becoming owner, along with his wife Nicole, in 2005.

The cost of owning a new vehicle rose in 2017 according to RACV’s Driving Your Dollars survey, but there are a number of ways savvy consumers can beat the rise and reduce their total cost of ownership over the life of their vehicle.

The Driving Your Dollars survey takes into account all expenses associated with normal car ownership including purchase price, interest, fuel, servicing, new tyres, insurance and depreciation and allows buyers to compare vehicles not only within one class, but across all classes.

RACV compared 137 popular vehicles, and found an average 1.6 per cent increase in costs, equating the overall average cost of running a vehicle at $207.84 per week.

“A rise in on-road costs, increased interest rates, faster depreciation, and the withdrawal of Australian-model Fords has led to an average increase in prices” said Michael Case, RACV’s Manager Vehicle Engineering.

“But it isn’t all bad news for consumers. On average, new vehicles use 3.7 per cent less fuel, nulling the effect of higher petrol prices.”

Additionally, many manufacturers are offering drive-away deals which absorb many extra fees which are traditionally added on to the cost of a new car. These fees could be stamp duty, registration and dealer delivery costs.

The cost of tyres has also decreased thanks to intense competition – including the entrance of RACV Mobile Tyres Service, with the average cost to change a set of tyres decreasing by nearly 15 per cent. “RACV encourages motorists to be savvy and beat the price rises by choosing a fuel efficient car and making the most of the drive-away price offers” Mr Case said.

Mazda a family favourite It has been a little over four decades since a 22-year-old rev-head - sporting a mullet and a love for anything with an engine - lobbed into Nar Nar Goon chasing his dream.

A young Bruce Clough had honed his mechanical skills and customer rapport in a thriving 'backyard' business, fixing and modifying cars in the driveway of his father's Werribee home.

He was ready to take the next step and quickly snapped up a towing and mechanical repair business he saw advertised in The Age in late 1974, despite the initial misgivings of his then girlfriend and later wife Sue, who thought he had taken her to the end of the earth.

Over the next few years Bruce and Sue grew both the business and a young family, with four boys being welcomed into the fold.

The Cloughs soon added a few used cars to the towing and mechanical repair business and in late 1994 seized an opportunity to add the Mazda dealership.

Sadly, Bruce succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer in July 2013, aged only 61.

Towards the end, he got the boys - Paul, Kane, Ben and Zac - together and told them that he had taken the business where he could and it was up to them to go to the next level.

"Bruce would be very proud of what the boys have done," Sue told the News.

A timeline marking significant developments in the company's history hangs proudly in the foyer and the staff handbook reflects the Clough journey.

"It's our story and we are proud of it," said Paul, who is now dealer principal.

"Bruce always had good vision," Sue said.

"He could always see where things were heading."

Bruce and Sue had just arrived back from an overseas trip and were heading back to Nar Nar Goon when they noticed the Mazda dealership in Pakenham had closed up.

It had been run for years by the Elliott family and been passed on to the Blanchards, who closed it after a couple of years.

Bruce told Sue he would give Mazda a call and they had secured the dealership within three months, with the first truckload of six Mazda vehicles arriving that December.

"Mazda was doing well in the 1970s and '80s, but lost its way a bit in the '90s," Paul explained.

"They were good, reliable cars but were not inspiring and lacked the flair of some of the other brands."

The growth eventually came on the back of the "Zoom Zoom boom" and Australia now has the highest market share for Mazda in the world and has the highest rate of customer satisfaction.

Mazdas are now the second most popular cars nationally.

It was the growth of both the Mazda brand and the Cardinia Shire region that led to the development of the new dealership.

Paul said Mazda had confidence that the Cloughs had the area well covered, but were mindful of the need for future expansion.

So the boys put the feelers out for a new site and Ray Weinzierl from Car Megamart offered the opportunity of a corner block on Commercial Drive in the new South East Business Park at Pakenham.

The Cloughs bought the land with the intention of sitting on it until the need to expand arose, but were advised that it would be in their best interests to move in as soon as possible.

So Montlaur Project Services and construction firm the APM Group, which built the

events and administration centre at Racing. com Park at Tynong, were engaged and the new state-of-the-art showroom quickly took shape.

Paul now heads up the operation as dealer principal, Kane is sales manager, Zac is service manager and Ben heads up the pre-delivery operation.

"We saw our most successful year ever in 2017, with record sales results across the entire Mazda range" Paul said.

"Building on that momentum we expect sales to continue to increase for another record breaking year."

Although their surroundings are all shiny and new, links to the past remain.

Sitting in a frame on the top of a filing cabinet in Paul's office is a VACC Tech School Special Mention certificate, presented to one Bruce Stanley Clough back in 1969.

He is still around in many other ways as well.

Paul says the work ethic and customer service developed by that 22-year-old rev-head in the mid-1970s will continue to be a cornerstone of the business.

"We pride ourselves to look after our customers the best we can. Our new purpose built state of the art facility provided new opportunities to expand our quality service range and has exceeded customer expectations." Paul explained.

"Our point of difference is our relationship with the local area," Paul said. "We have local knowledge and a focus on relationships and customer service - qualities that were instilled in us by Dad. "We are happy to be judged on how we treat our customers. Networking and word of mouth has always been a big part of our success - and will continue to be.

"It keeps you on your toes. We don't want to go to the local footy and find out that we have given someone bad service.

A Casey Council underground inspection found minimal tree roots under the front lawn, sheeting no blame on the gum trees. Two smaller trees on the front nature strip were instead removed.

The couple had no idea of the dramas when they moved into the estate 10 years ago.

"We can't see this house to some young couple and then give them this problem."

Casey Council which is responsible for the trees has started work on a street tree precinct plan for stages 1 and 2 of the estate, and has a "proactive tree renewal program" for the entire estate.

City presentation manager David Richardson said the council responded to resident concerns in 2014 and had since removed more than 100 trees a year in Timbarra.

"For those established trees that are yet to be replaced, Council conducts regular maintenance.

"This program seeks to balance the need to replace the trees with the maintenance of the tree canopy; a feature ... that residents have told us provides it with its distinctive character."

The couple have given up trying to save their patchy lawn and front garden from the thirsty trees.

Mr Pietro Paolo has taken to hacking away the visible root system spreading towards his front patio.

"People used to comment that it was the nicest estate they'd seen.

"And now you're just embarrassed bringing them around here now."

The trees were planted by the Urban Land Authority on behalf of the State Government when the estate was established more than 20 years ago.

Thousands of pest gum-trees lining the streets of Timbarra Estate, Berwick continue to plague residents despite a renewal plan by Casey Council.

Up to 6000 towering Wallangarra White Gums are dropping branches and piles of leaves, killing lawns and garden beds and lifting and cracking footpaths and homes, residents say.

Casey Council's removal program of 100 trees each year is not extensive enough, they say. They want the "monsters" gone.

Alan Richardson, who lives in Theodore Terrace, led a campaign against the trees in 2014. Half of the trees were removed in his terrace, but he says it's time to drum up an estatewide petition to finish the job.

"They're just not the right type of tree. They drop leaves continually, no grass can grow under them, they clog up the spouting, flood roofs and burst water pipes.

"It's only by the Grace of God they haven't dropped a big beam on someone's head.

"Most people like trees - trees that are suitable for a housing area. These are not.

"They are just monsters."

Mr Richardson said the trees also sucked the moisture out of the estate's clay soils, causing subsidence and cracking in homes.

This is exactly what John and Mirjana Jovanovic claim has happened to their substantially-cracked home walls.

Their house in Coolabah Grove is about 10 metres from the nearest gum tree.

Yet they say the marauding root system has killed their front lawn as well as a rose and lavender garden, and cracked their home driveway and living room walls.

The wall cracks inside are several centimetres wide and up to two metres long - and growing.

At Casey Council's request, the Jovanovics provided an engineer's report to substantiate their claims last year. The council however concluded the gum trees weren't the cause of the problem.

Reading the ongoing saga of SouthEast business Crystal World, you could be forgiven for asking this question.

As we revealed last week, this successful local import-export company is under threat from Casey Council.

Owner Thomas Kapitany employs 20 staff, with a trade worth millions to the local economy.

He’s been operating there without incident for almost 20 years.

Enter the bureaucrats - and things get a little murky.

In short, it appears maybe the appropriate planning ticks and crosses were not applied - but this has taken some time to come to light.

While the behind-the-scenes manoeuvring might be opaque, the public response has been - forgive us - crystal clear.

Not only does the wider community want the business saved, they’ve launched an online petition to back it.

Beats the clicktivism and slacktivism we usually see for every disparate cause under the sun.

It would seem to be a crying shame to see this business either lost to the area - or lost full stop - for the want of a little commonsense and compromise.

One could even argue that if any business complied with the intent of a Green Wedge zone, this one might go closer than most.

Surely, within the council there is someone of goodwill who can find a way forward for this business, its owner, its staff and its community, for the good of all.

A win-win beckons. Will anyone of the political persuasion step in to scoop up the prize?

Tenant’s toxic heater shock

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren pensioner has been kept in the cold for weeks after having his potentially deadly gas heater removed from his publichousing unit.

Neil Parkinson, 64, says first he heard of the danger was a Department of Health and Human Services letter in April.

It warned that the unit's Pyrox Heritage open-flue gas heater should be tested for potentially leaking unsafe levels of carbon monoxide. The department had issued letters to 6500 affected tenants amidst a national alert on the heater brand by the Australian Gas Association and Energy Safe Victoria.

Carbon monoxide is a clear, odourless and toxic gas. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, headaches, malaise and dizziness.

Mr Parkinson, who has endured a quadruple heart-bypass, said the heater had been putting him to sleep.

"I've already had a heart attack. I've been in and out of hospital for a couple of months.

"I've felt short of breath, tired and then I'd go to sleep."

Since the heater's assessment and removal, Mr Parkinson says he waited for five weeks for an adequate replacement heater. It took him another week to work out how to turn it on.

In the interim, the Department supplied

an oil heater and he borrowed a portable fan heater to keep warm.

"I live near the centre of Narre Warren.

When it gets cold, it really gets cold."

The Coroners' Court of Victoria is investigating the death of a Greensborough public housing tenant Sonia Sofianopoulos allegedly from carbon monoxide leaking from her unit's Vulcan Heritage gas heater in July 2017.

In April, Energy Safe Victoria issued a warning on the "old technology" Vulcan Heritage and Pyrox Heritage gas heaters.

It didn't issue a recall notice, but advised that those heaters should not be used until tested by a qualified gasfitter.

Its energy safety director Paul Fearon warned the brands produced high levels of carbon monoxide under "certain conditions".

The heaters weren't "necessarily compatible" with new or renovated homes with less ventilation.

"If the house is well sealed and the heater is operating at the same time as a kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan, carbon monoxide from the heater can be drawn into living areas."

ESV recommends that indoor gas appliances, especially heaters, are checked by a qualified gasfitter every two years.

The Department of Health and Human Services did not respond by deadline.

The architect's sources of inspiration for the design were that of 'The Meeting of Many Paths' and Bunjil the Eaglehawk, both central themes to the culture of the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional owners and inhabitants of the land.

"Council is incredibly proud of the design outcome of Bunjil Place that draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, local culture and the history of the area," Cr Ablett added.

"From the distinctive roof, which resembles soaring eagle wings and reaches out to create the outdoor meeting space, to the impressive timber grid shell feature, along with the modern and inviting design that features throughout the facility, it really is a beautiful precinct the whole community can be proud of."

Cloudy outlook in crystal ball

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The owner of Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys hopes a social-media outcry may help save the business falling foul of planning laws.

The business's future is uncertain after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal refused its application for a warehouse extension on the Devon Meadows site on 24 April.

VCAT member Picha Djohan stated that the nature of the business - with more than 300 tons of specimens including crystals, dinosaur fossils and meteorites sold and stored onsite - was unlawful in the Green Wedge.

Business owner Thomas Kapitany was heartened by a wealth of well-wishers on Facebook, as well as a 2700-strong online petition to stop his business from being shut down.

"It's great to get such a public response.

"It will get more reaction. We're known around the world as a destination place.

"There's only a few labs like this around the world."

Mr Kapitany was unsure if public criticism would cause Casey Council to "make an example of me" or "back off and work with me".

"There always has to be a compromise in these things."

He's consulted and supplied museums around the world, trains geology students and travels 10 months of the year following his "hobby" and "lifestyle".

Mr Kapitany claims that Casey refused to sit down and negotiate prior to the matter landing at VCAT. Casey Council counter-claims that Mr Kapitany went to VCAT rather than meeting with the council.

Casey statutory planning and building services manager Duncan Turner said the land-owner now had to comply with the VCAT decision and the State Government's Green Wedge provisions.

Warehousing and retail sales were prohibited in the zone, Mr Turner said.

However Mr Kapitany regarded the VCAT decision as non-binding on the council. It didn't comprise an order to shut down Crystal World.

"The council doesn't have to do anything. It can make an exemption (for Crystal World).

"They don't have to give me a permit but it doesn't mean they have to close me down."

Bunjil Place has soared at the International Design Awards last week, taking out a top honour.

City of Casey's striking new arts and cultural precinct, which was designed by leading Australian architectural firm Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT), was named 'Architecture of the Year' and also received the gold prize in both the 'Institutional' and 'Landmarks, symbolic structures, memorials, public' architecture categories.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council was honoured that Bunjil Place, which was $125 million project, had received such recognition.

"Council set out to create an inviting central heart for the whole community that would instil a sense of pride in the Casey community through the delivery of Bunjil Place," he said.

“I’ve given (the industry) the message that if there was another disaster, it was all over, Red Rover.

“Remember you’re judged in the way you treat your animals.

“I just think it’s a sad reflection on the (live export) industry.”

Alleged burglar claims family alibi

O’Malley told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 May. The alibi came from Culibrk’s relatives though not the family members that were coaccused of the offences, Ms O’Malley said.

La Trobe Liberal MP Jason Wood has defied his party’s support for live sheep exports, declaring another animal-welfare “disaster” was bound to happen again.

On 21 May, Mr Wood co-sponsored a private members Bill in Federal Parliament with the “ultimate aim” of phasing out long-haul live sheep exports within five years.

He fronted a press conference with Liberal colleagues Sussan Ley and Sarah Henderson in Canberra to spruik the Bill.

In ensuing days, his electorate office has been swamped by supportive messages. Not one supported the continuation of the trade, he said.

“I have listened to the community, and believe the case for continuing long haul sheep exports fails on both animal welfare and economic grounds. “No one wants to see animals die and suffer the way they have.

“I can’t imagine anything worse for the animals.”

The Bill reportedly attracted the ire of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in the caucus room, but has been backed by Labor and The Greens.

“I’m not the flavour of the month with some of my colleagues on this,” Mr Wood conceded.

I have lived in Lyndhurst for eight years now and during that time I have witnessed the Cranbourne line become increasingly unreliable. The Monash freeway is practically unusable and our train services are relentlessly incompetent at delivering reasonable services and I’m finding it very difficult to get to and from work from my area. I have even recently considered moving however would prefer not to take this option.

Metro Trains continues to cancel and delay trains, and to add salt to the wound when they are running a late service they will go one step further and kick its paying passengers off at either Dandenong or Richmond Station just so it can make it to point A or B on scheduled time.

They are too quick and too casual about dropping the ball and kicking people off the train, just because their drivers can’t make it to each station on time.

For years Metro has relied upon excuses such as faulty equipment or signalling issues, however I fail to see how this can occur every day. As stated to them several times, if something in my house breaks, I fix it, why can’t the same be expected of them? Another point to make is before 7am everyday they send out notifications advising customer of how their services have been disrupted, every day! If I went around my office advising staff that I was incompetent at my job I would be fired within a week, however Metro isn’t embarrassed by its own short comings. One just has to sign up to the Metro App to experience the sheer volume of excuses as to why trains can’t deliver Cranbourne passengers to their destinations on time.

Cranbourne is by far the worst performing line in the Metro train service and nothing is done to fix it. If anyone fare evades then they have spent time and money on ensuring that they catch them, however if they do wrong by their customers, no one is around to penalise them.

Recently Metro inconvenienced its paying customers to raise the tracks to elevate traffic congestion which is great news for the traffic on the road but bad news for public transport commuters as it hasn’t improved the line one bit. Since being advised to use other train lines or catch their buses during this period they have repaid their customers by not delivering their services daily. There’s not a day that goes by that I can’t travel to and from home peacefully without having to deal with Metro not caring about Cranbourne customers.

Metro constantly falls back on its “no compensation” policy which they created themselves to ensure that they don’t have to pay for their mistakes, however it’s time we got something back.

I constantly am missing appointments and commitments. I’m constantly having to be strategic with how I get to and from work and I’m constantly paying money for my life to be ruined as Metros actions (or lack of) are ruining my personal and professional commitments, causing me and thousands of others great stress, and all because I travel on the Cranbourne line.

I could be lenient if they were a new business and trying to get things right, however they are an old experienced business and get worse by the day, so now involving my council representative to see if we can do something about it as I would like to take action against Metro Trains.

I was disappointed to read Cam LucadouWells’ article titled “No Budget On Birthday“.

It seemed to me a blatant attempt to discredit Susan Serey, who is a hardworking councillor and Liberal candidate for the state seat of Narre Warren South.

There were several councillors who were unable to attend that meeting and yet you singled out Councillor Serey.

Sometimes people jut can’t attend certain events. It’s part of life.

When a dead tree falls ...

It is of great concern that a resident has been fined for removing a dead tree.

Under Australian administrative law, councils do not have the authority to exercise a power that is so unreasonable that no reasonable person could have so exercised that power, or to exercise a power that constitutes abuse of that power.

Should a council breach these rules of behaviour then both the elected members and the officers of council become personally liable for their actions and are not protected by council’s insurance against professional liability and they become liable for their actions.

As I understand the matter, it seems to me that if this council has drafted legislation so as to be able to fine a person for removing a dead tree, then they are clearly in breach of these rules of behaviour.

Real aid How much longer do we have to put up with this fiasco, our fairly well cared animals, mistreated on a voyage of many weeks to be even worse treated by people who have no respect for women and have even less respect for the animal they buy for their food, by slashing its tendons and putting it in the boot of their car in 40-plus degrees, pehaps for hours, then killing it slowly by slashing its throat and letting it bleed to death.

It must be stopped and stopped properly, so that nobody loses out.

Firstly, we must take the chequebook off Julie Bishop, we are not paying for her place in UN. Then we use the Foreign Aid money to set up a facility in each state to process surplus animals, foodstufffs and any other item that might be of use to other nations in need.

The idea is, the government buys up all Australian produced surpluses, sheep, cattle, horses, goats, buffalo, pigs, camels, kangaroos, crocodiles, chickens, ducks,turkeys and they process them humanely - i.e. NO Halal.

This meat is fozen, dried and tinned, then stored. Likewise all our grain, made into flour, cereals, biscuits etc. Our sugar and honey packed, tinned and bottled. Our fruits and vegetables all processed, milk and eggs dried. The list is endless - tents, blankets, sheets, towels, camp beds and some furniture, tools of every type, all Australian made and surplus, bought up by the government, processed and stored, using the money we would give as Foreign Aid which manages to end up in Swiss bank accounts and doesn’t reach where it should.

The beauty of this system is, the producers always sell all their produce, Foreign Aid can be sent in containers, directly where it is needed in the right mix and quantities and best of all, our charities could be allowed to draw from these facilities at no charge, a win-win situation for everyone.

Last but not least is the staff who will be needed to build and run these facilities, paid for by the same Foreign Aid money, employment for many thousands of people.

Call to slow it down

Cr Rosario said despite the new crossing being a great win for the community “I don’t think we should wait. Six months is a long time and things could happen.”

Hampton Park Secondary College school council president Kerry Baker said Pound Road was a “constant area of concern” for pedestrians.

“It needs to have a set of traffic lights somewhere. A drop in speed limit would help,” she said.

ille Hendrie said it didn’t matter what speed limit was applied to Pound Road.

However, he said come 3.30pm each day: “It’s just a nightmare to get across that road whether you’re driving a car or walking - traffic builds up that much.

“As for the rest of the day 70km/h is not a problem there because it’s two lanes both ways.“ Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne also supported calls by the community and the City of Casey to drop the speed limit on Pound Road and Shrives Road to improve road safety.

Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett has not responded to Star News’ request for comment.

Federation University has defended its financial viability after the release of a critical Victorian Auditor-General's report on 25 May. The report pointed to the university's declining student numbers and financial results over the past five years, including a net deficit in 2017.

This was in the background of an otherwise financially-strong university sector in Victoria.

"It would be prudent for (Federation University) to assess the relevance and financial sustainability of (its) current course offerings," the report stated. In its favour were significant cash and investments and a "relatively strong balance sheet", the VAGO found.

"As such, it is likely to be solvent for the short to medium term. However, such a review would enable it to improve its financial performance in the longer term."

In its formal response to the report, Federation University accepted the recommendations.

Vice-chancellor Helen Bartlett, in a statement, said the university had invested heavily in recent years -including taking over the Berwick campus. It impacted on short-term finances but would lead to long-term sustainability, Professor Bartlett said.

By opening new campuses, the aim was to grow student numbers outside its western Victoria heartland over the next four years. It aimed to increase its enrolments to 28,000 - a rise of 7,000 - by 2022, Professor Bartlett said.

"The University has experienced strong demand for places at Berwick which has grown to 1400 students in just its second year of operation.

"We have already implemented changes to our academic structure, undertaken a review of all our programs and courses, and will continue to identify areas for improvement that will strengthen our financial performance."

A busy stretch of road in Hampton Park badly needs to be reduced with trucks “slamming on brakes” and narrowly missing pedestrians, a Casey Councillor says.

Cr Damien Rosario says he had received “too many complaints“ from residents regarding road safety on Pound Road, with a truck also “veering off the road, missing a girl by two metres” on two occasions at a school crossing only weeks ago.

“Visibility is one of the big things I think is the major problem with Pound Road,” he said.

Cr Rosario successfully moved a motion at a Casey Council meeting on 15 May, calling for VicRoads and the State Government to reduce the speed limit of Pound Road and Shrives Road from 70km/h to 60km/h.

VicRoads Manager of Movement and Safety Sasha Yarwood said safety was taken seriously and “welcomed discussions with the City of Casey and will continue to explore further safety improvements on Pound and Shrives Road.”

Following a review, VicRoads says the current 70km/h speed limit was “considered appropriate” and there are currently no plans to reduce the speed limit on Pound Road and Shrives Road.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said $7.6 million had been invested to install a new roundabout at the intersection of Pound Road and Shrives Road “which will improve safety and ease congestion.”

According to VicRoads, there have been a total of eight crashes on Pound Road with one fatality and one serious injury in the year to January. No crashes were recorded on Shrives Road in the year to January.

Cr Rosario said it “really shamed” him to think that the safety of crossing supervisors and pedestrians were put at risk.

Diving deep for the data

By Narelle Coulter Thousands of pieces of data are being collected at Bunjil Place each day as visitor movements are recorded via mobile phones and fed back to the city’s Data and Digital Department.

It is just one way the City of Casey is using big and small data to plan services, schedule maintenance and manage population growth according to the city’s manager of Digital and Data Chris O’Connor.

Mr O’Connor addressed the third annual Mayor’s Business Leaders Dinner on Thursday 24 May at Bunjil Place. The event was hosted by mayor Geoff Ablett.

Mr O’Connor said his job was to “use digital technologies, innovation and data to make Casey a more successful city“.

He explained that each mobile phone that enters Bunjil Place is a source of information or big data for the city.

“Walking through this building we have little data collection points that ping your phone and find out which areas you are coming to, where you are dwelling and whether people are moving from the cafe to the library to the theatre, or from the theatre to the cafe to the library.

“It’s all anonymous so we don’t know who you are, but those insights help us create a better customer experience.“ He said big data was a “growing space for us“ and was characterised by volume, variety and velocity.

“Our job in managing that data is to turn it into wisdom. Data on its own is useless.“ To illustrate his point Mr O’Connor gave the example of a set of numbers which when broken down and subject to trend analysis showed, for example, that a higher than average number of people were at Casey Fields at 11am on a Thursday morning.

Another example of the way the city collects big data is its landfill monitoring technology.

Mr O’Connor said a gadget the size of an iPhone monitors air quality at the city’s landfill sites. It relays small packets of data at regular intervals relieving the need for human monitoring.

“Equally important to us is small data, the data that humans can interpret. Big data needs computers to understand it. Small data is obtained by talking to people, surveys and customer feedback.

“We are working a lot in small data through our digital services. Looking to understand what our customers’ needs are in the discov-

ery phase and then looking to define what solutions we can give to help them out.

“Importantly all along we keep in mind the voice of the customer by inviting them in, talking to them, seeking feedback on all our services and, as a result, build some pretty nifty stuff that we can release to market with a real degree of confidence that we know it is going to meet their needs.“ To make sense of that constant flow of data the city has hired its first full-time data analyst, Warren Dean.

Mr Dean also addressed the dinner illustrating how his work can tell stories about what is happening in the City of Casey.

He showed heat map used to plan kindergartens. Current kindergartens were mapped and overlayed with Maternal and Child Health

data which showed a concentration of under four year olds in the Botanic Ridge area but no kindergartens.

Mr Dean said historical data was also useful in predicting the future of services like hard waste collection.

“From historical data we know people are generally booking their hard waste in December and January so using seasonal information we can forecast what is going to happen over the next couple of years and adjust our contracts and services to meet the needs.“ Data can also be used to save money.

Analysis of the city’s asset data was crunched by consulting firm Minnovation to find value. The outcome was an estimated five million saving based on five recommendations.

The data analysis found that by reducing reactive maintenance by 5 per cent the city could save a million dollars a year.

“That’s all from data we’ve had sitting there,“ Mr Dean explained.

Data can also tell much smaller stories like where the library corporation should concentrate its Mandarin books.

Census data showed Endeavour Hills had the largest Mandarin speaking population in the city, information useful to librarians.

Mr O’Connor encouraged those business leaders at the dinner to engage with data in their own day to day operations.

“There are options out there to start getting your head around data - talk to experts, do an online course, talk to us or anyone in the City’s economy team but get in and have a crack,“ he said.

The evening also included a panel discussion featuring Minnovation managing director Simon Maselli, FedUni campus director Greg Jakob and Zeemo creative director Anne Mehla.

Big day comes first

Narre Warren South Liberals send birthday greetings to state election candidate Susan Serey.

A man accused of a spree of car thefts has yelled a spray of obscenities in court after being refused bail to an address in the South-East.

During his appearance on 28 May, the man - who had just turned 18 - was said to be withdrawing from “everything”. That included a mix of “multiple drugs” and alcohol.

The man had been arrested by police at Comfort Inn, Dandenong on 26 May for failing to appear at a children’s court.

In April, he had been arrested and released on summons on four charges of car theft - three of them allegedly stolen during aggravated home burglaries in Highett in March.

The vehicles including a $95,000 Audi, and another worth $56,000 were later recovered in various locations by police, the magistrates’ court was told.

A $15,000 vehicle stolen from a Hampton East home driveway was allegedly dumped after crashing with another vehicle.

A Youth Justice worker told the court she was surprised that police released the man on summons at that point.

After his release, the man threatened victims in two separate incidents in Highett on 31 March.

In the first instant, he allegedly charged with a knife at a victim, then banged and stabbed an apartment door up to 30 times as the victim barricaded himself inside. He was also accused of punching another man and trying to snatch his car keys at a home driveway the same day.

A magistrate said that the man was “highrisk” to the community, noting he was on ecstasy, Xanax, alcohol and cannabis during the recent assaults.

Noting the man’s “unknown” mental health issues, the judge remanded him to appear at court at a later date.

Casey councillor and state election candidate Susan Serey has defended her absence from the council's final workshop ahead of the 2018-'19 draft budget.

On the day that councillors put the finishing touches to the budget, Cr Serey's allies - the Narre Warren South Liberals - boasted that she was celebrating her birthday at other community events. According to the group's Facebook page on 5 May, she was "today meeting with community groups, talking to local residents and will attend a community fundraiser tonight.

"If you see her out and about, make sure you wish her a Happy Birthday!"

Cr Serey said the council budget was formed over "years and months of advocacy", and "not just a single briefing".

"I had placed an apology to the briefing last Saturday several weeks earlier due to pre-existing commitments, as had several other councillors. "It is important to note that no changes to the budget can be made outside of an official council meeting as this would not comply with the Local Government Act 1989."

Jack's best shot for cure

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Fresh from taking on the Education Department, 11-year-old Jack Ottens is facing another critical battle in the next month. The brilliant Berwick youngster has been given a life-changing chance to be ridded of what has been a ticking timebomb - an arterioveinous malformation (AVM).

In the past two years, it has ruptured twice without warning. Each time this happens, Jack risks suffering a potentially fatal bleed deep in his brain. He narrowly survived the first rupture when rushed to hospital for emergency brain surgery. Treatment is not without its risks. The experimental Gamma Knife Radiation treatment that's been offered in Sydney in June or July has an 80 per cent chance of success.

It's his best shot, though there's a risk - up to 20 per cent - that he will be paralysed down his left side. As well as partial blindness, chronic pain, long-term brain swelling and even fatal ruptures. His mother Christine says that in 20 years' time, Jack is almost certain to develop brain tumours from the massive dose of radiation. It's hoped that by that time, medicine can remedy those ills, Ms Ottens says.

But to do nothing is not an option.

"It's not great but there is no better," Ms Ottens says. "There is the hope that Jack can live a full and productive life.

"If it doesn't work then Jack will continue to live each day for the rest of his life as he has for the last six years - with the fear that today could be his last." The family has turned to crowdfunding to try to help cover much of the $5000-plus treatment's cost. Medicare and private health insurance covers little.

As recently reported in Star News, Ms Ottens has been fighting the Education Department for six years to better school Jack - who is often absent from school due to his precarious condition. Since then, there has been a minor breakthrough. The Department has allowed Jack's school, Berwick Chase Primary, to submit for resources under Program for Students with Disabilities funding. Education is key for Jack, who is Mensa-listed and has a keen interest in insects, astronomy and natural sciences.

"What he makes of his life will be up to him," Ms Ottens said.

"But as a parent I have a responsibility to give him the tools to be able to do that."

‘Scraps’ for local sports Liberal candidate for Cranbourne, Ann-Marie Hermans has slammed Premier Daniel Andrews for handing our local community sports groups a “raw deal,” while “doling out harbourside land in the heart of Melbourne to the AFL for free.”

In a parliamentary inquiry last week, Ms Hermans said Treasurer Tim Pallas admitted he had no idea of the value of the land recently gifted by the Andrews Labor Government to the AFL to develop a new headquarters at Docklands.

The Treasurer also confirmed to the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee there was no effort to analyse if the deal would benefit taxpayers, she said.

“Daniel Andrews is prepared to gift the AFL prime land worth - apparently - millions of dollars, while our grassroots sports clubs are left with the scraps,” Ann-Marie Hermans said.

“Our Cranbourne football and netball clubs have immediate funding needs in both their programs and infrastructure. I will fight to ensure our local families and community get more government funding.“ The $225 million for the AFL could, based on current State Government grant guidelines, cover grants for - 2,250 country football and netball clubs, 75 aquatic centres or 900 small swimming pool upgrades, she said.

Shadow Minister for Sport Danny O’Brien said it beggared belief that Daniel Andrews was giving a free kick to the AFL while “slapping our community sports clubs with interest-bearing loans to upgrade their facilities.”

“Anyone involved in sport at the grassroots level could point to a club rooms that needs replacing, a stadium that needs a new roof or a playing field that needs work,” he said.

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the State Government had committed to $5 million in upgrading facilities for women’s footy at Casey Fields last month.

By Brendan Rees Melbourne's historic yellow and green trams could be coming to the City of Casey.

The retired trams - including the iconic WClass - which transported millions of Victorians are now up for grabs with Casey councillors putting their hand up for 10 of them at their Tuesday 15 May meeting.

City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, who moved the motion for council to make an application through VicTrack said there would be "so many wonderful opportunities" for the community.

She said they could be used for varying uses, including as cafes and on display in public places.

"There are a number of groups that are really keen to assist in the restoration of these trams," she said.

"These Victorian icons will now be available to come to life once again and preserved for future generations to enjoy," she said.

"If they're not going to be used on the network, we want to keep these trams accessible to the community."

Applications for the trams close on 6 July with a report will come back to Council in June outlining agreed sites, projects and groups.

Liberals promise a traffic safety boost

By Brendan Rees Traffic light warning signs will be installed at a busy intersection in Lynbrook if the Liberals win the State Election in November, opposition leader Matthew Guy has promised.

Mr Guy said the Liberals would invest $60,000 for flashing advanced warning signs on the approach to the intersection of South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard during his announcement at the site on Wednesday 30 May. The warning signs would help motorists to slow down and avoid running the amber and red light, he said.

"With huge growth in traffic demand the Liberal Party will provide the necessary safety upgrades to keep Casey's roads safe," Mr Guy said.

Lynbrook Resident's Association president Jason Wood said the community had been fighting for flashing warning lights for years.

"The big issue is the trucks coming up the

incline and then only accelerate to get up. It's a bad intersection with the amount of cars that run the red light here," he said.

The State Government says there are already signs warning of the traffic lights at this intersection and this proposal simply turns them into "flashing" signs.

Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said "We're currently delivering a massive upgrade to Thompsons Road, fixing Narre WarrenCranbourne Road, Hallam Road and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road.

"These upgrades will shift truck traffic onto safer arterial roads, and give local roads back to local people," he said.

Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne, AnnMarie Hermans said safety was paramount for the community.

"We know this is a very dangerous intersection and we've worked out there are at least four people running the red lights every day," she said.

Fire bill tops $12 million Preventable house fires are on the rise in the Casey area.

The CFA’s latest statistics showed there were 457 preventable house fires in district eight last year, which includes Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Dandenong, Springvale, Mornington, Phillip Island and Wonthaggi.

This was a two per cent increase on the previous year.

These fires caused $12.7 million in damage, the state’s highest district dollar figure.

Most preventable fires started in the kitchen, followed by bedrooms, lounge rooms, the roof or ceiling, and the laundry.

Cooking was the cause of 34 per cent of the preventable house fires, or 131 incidents.

Electrical was the next most common cause, accounting for 32 per cent, followed by heating at 13 per cent.

District eight acting operations manager Andrew Turner said working smoke alarms saved lives.

“This is clearly demonstrated through the fact that despite more than 450 preventable house fires and significant property loss in our district, there were no deaths as a result of preventable fires in 2017,” he said.

“Our message is clear.

“Check your smoke alarm’s battery, and if your smoke alarm is aged 10 years or more the whole unit should be changed.”

The CFA’s acting chief officer, Garry Cook, said the best way to stop a fire was to teach a person how to be safe in the home and stop a fire before it even began.

“This includes reaching out to our multicultural communities, making sure regardless of whether you speak English or not you are safe around fires,” he said.

“Whether we are educating people about not drying clothes too close to the heater, never leaving cooking unattended, or keeping lighters away from children, it is all part of our ultimate goal of protecting life and property.”

Star-gazers were out in force at Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick on 23 May to take part in an astronomical world record, but unfortunately thick cloud spoiled the party.

About 200 registered and rugged-up entrants joined hundreds of other groups around Australia to simultaneously view the Moon through telescopes for 10 minutes from 8.40pm. The Casey-based party however was unable to get a glimpse of the lunar body through heavily overcast skies.

Despite the setback, Guinness Book of Records officials confirmed more than 40,000 people in 280-odd locations smashed the previous world record of 7,960.

The attempt was jointly organised by the ABC and the Australian National University.

‘Homeless’ office opens

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new WAYSS office has opened in Berwick to help growing numbers of homeless and at-risk dwellers in Casey.

Homelessness manager Jen Kelly said housing stress in the fast-growing muncipality was worsening, with little relief in recent State and Federal budgets.

The push for more affordable housing had to come from those Governments, she said.

"We should be able to provide more for citizens of this country than what we are."

Up to 200 families flock to WAYSS's offices each week, but the amount of short-term, crisis housing stock remains unchanged.

Often it feels like "shifting deck-chairs on the Titanic", Ms Kelly says.

"We have families in Dandenong and Berwick coming in - and the only options for them currently is a motel.

"We're trying not to send people away to nothing. Sometimes they don't want what we have to offer."

Registered rooming houses in Casey were booming, which was "not necessarily the ideal" but "unfortunately better than nothing".

Ms Kelly said the Federal Government's decades-long freeze of Newstart allowances and rental assistance put soaring rentals out of reach.

Even families with a full-time income were struggling to pay the rent, she said.

They had to pay the rent at all costs because "the alternative is not good".

Casey North Community Information and Support Services general manager Susan Ma-

gee said the Federal Government's hard line on Newstart recipients would push more into homelessness.

"They're making things harder for people to be eligible for Centrelink. The process for applying will be more difficult, more people will be without income for longer periods.

"That will make people in housing more vulnerable to losing their homes."

A State Government spokesman said the Government's reforms had made housing "fairer" for first home buyers, renters and public housing tenants.

It had also increased homelessness outreach and supportive housing teams in areas of high need, including Dandenong, he said.

The Government had also helped make housing more affordable by increasing supply of lots with good access to jobs, schools, hospitals and public transport, he said.

La Trobe Federal MP Jason Wood said he aimed for everyone to have access to "affordable, safe and sustainable housing that contributes to social and economic participation."

Federal budget initiatives included the establishment of a $1 billion National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation and the release of land for housing.

The Government was working with states and territories for ongoing indexed funding for housing supply and better homelessness outcomes.

It also committed $23 million in ongoing funding for Reconnect, a youth homelessness service.

Safety tale wags the dog

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Many of Casey's youngest would be familiar with the exploits of KC Dog. The giant Dalmatian - worn by Debbie Medley - and her handler Maureen Fowler spread a warmly delivered safety advice to kindergarten kids in Casey every week.

Their efforts as well as scores of other worthy volunteers in Melbourne's South East were recognised at a function at Government House on 17 May. The event hosted by Governor Linda Dessau and Premier Daniel Andrews made the KC Dog collaborators feel special, Ms Fowler said.

More than 2000 kids are expected to hear KC Dog and Ms Fowler's well-honed message this year.

Ms Fowler, a former teacher, sits down with her self-authored story-book describing what KC Dog does when she's lost from her parents at a park.

According to the story, KC Dog doesn't run out into the car park where she could be hit by cars, but elects to stay where she last saw her family.

Children are also alerted to the risk of going with unidentified strangers at this point.

KC Dog is instead helped by a passing police officer.

Ms Fowler says part of the program's aim is to build children's trust in police officers partly filling the void of the long-axed Police in Schools program.

"Even with the Safety House program gone too, kids need to know some strategies."

KC Dog is run by Neighbourhood Watch Casey, and founded by the group's late, great matriarch Jen Baird.

"This is Jen's baby," Ms Fowler says.

"And we're happy to keep it going."

Sara Blicavs backs Mazda Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) sporting superstar Sara Blicavs has joined Berwick Mazda as their latest Ambassador.

Berwick Mazda partnered with the Dandenong Basketball Association over 10 years ago and has supported the WNBL Rangers through some momentous highlights over the years. One of these highlights has been watching Sara Blicavs’s career grow.

Sara made her international debut with the Under-17 program at the FIBA Oceania Under-16 Championship in 2009. She also represented Australia at the FIBA Under-17 and Under-19 World Championship in France and Chile. Her team at the time - the Opals - won gold at the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship.

She almost hit Olympian status, participating in the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro, in January 2016.

Her parents, Andris and Karen Blicavs, both played for Australian national basketball teams and competed in the 1976 and 1984 Olympics.

Her siblings are also equally active. Mark Blicavs currently plays for the Geelong Football Club, and her brother, Kris Blicavs, is a Geelong Supercats SEABL player as well as a personal trainer at Sam Wood’s ‘The Woodshed’ in Brighton.

Her new sister-in-law, Steph Blicavs (nee Cummings) is also a fellow WNBL Jayco Rangers player.

WHAT’S ON Learn to play the bagpipes

Exercise classes

The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds.

They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a midyear break, lessons for their learners continue.

Heath’s rapid football rise

By Russell Bennett The evolution of Heath Briggs into an inside, contested ball-winning machine has been nothing short of astonishing.

The 17-year-old Berwick local is now one of reigning APS premier Haileybury’s leaders, following in the footsteps of the likes of Andrew and Hamish Brayshaw, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Aiden Bonar, Oscar Clavarino, Charlie Constable, and Jackson Ross who made their way from the school (and the TAC Cup) on to AFL lists in last year’s draft.

Briggs is now known for his voice on the ground and his unflinching approach to winning the inside ball - traits his name wasn’t always synonymous with.

But his remarkable development over the past 12 to 18 months has ensured his name is front of mind for recruiters looking ahead to this year’s draft.

Briggs followed his older brother Jaxon into the Cora Lynn senior ranks. He played four games as a 15-year-old, and nine in 2017, with one of them being the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition senior grand final against a rampant Inverloch Kongwak. He’s gone on to play four games for the Cobras so far this year across either the thirds or seniors, in addition to his school footy commitments with Haileybury, and his role for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup. Across all levels last season, Briggs was like a sponge - soaking up as much as he could playing alongside bonafide future AFL stars, and hardened senior footballers back at local level.

And it has clearly served to make a huge impact to his game.

Idolising Nat Fyfe for the way he goes about his football both at the contest and on the outside, Briggs is a relentless runner with an undying work-rate - two characteristics that immediately spring to mind to David Lappage, who coaches him at Haileybury alongside former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd.

“I certainly knew through years 7, 8 and 9 that he could really play, and by Year 10 he played some firsts footy but probably was a bit more (of an) outside (player),” he said of Briggs, now in Year 12.

“He was probably too outside and in all honesty - and he’d probably admit this - was a little hesitant.

“Last year we had a great on-ball division - we had six go on and get drafted from that one team ... so he just played a role out on the wing.

“But this year with what he’s doing inside, and with his tackle pressure, he’s really taken it to the next level.”

Lappage said Briggs’ contest and stoppage work, his voice, his run, and his ability to use his body to great affect were all massive strengths of his game.

“He’s got quite a quiet, laidback nature about him but the boys often say how loud and how good he is now at directing traffic and using his voice,” he said of Briggs.

Lappage said last season’s premiershipwinning group left a lasting legacy on the likes of Briggs, the highly-touted King twins - Max and Ben, Pete Gentile, and Mitch Riordan who’ve this season stepped up to lead the Haileybury side in their own right.

In one game earlier this year, Briggs had 10 tackles to go along with 37 touches - showing just how much he has indeed stepped up to the plate.

“He’s taken the next step and his running ability is his point of difference,” Lappage said.

“He’s clocking up big kilometres and we hardly have to use him off the bench.

“The way he’s adjusted and stepped up has been amazing.

“I didn’t see it coming, that he’d be the inside leader that he’s become - because of his quiet nature - (but) I’ll use him as an example to other players in the future.”

From his own perspective, Briggs said his physical maturation over the past 12 to 18 months had served to significantly boost his confidence.

“You could just throw your weight around more in there and just get inside a bit more,” he said.

“With school footy, say from Year 10, I’m definitely more comfortable now in using my voice and directing on the ground - that’s another thing that’s really improved for me this year.”

Briggs said his experiences at local senior footy, as well as in the TAC Cup and school systems, had all served to help advance his game.

“The leaders last year - Davies and Brayshaw and those guys - set a very good standard for what we can achieve so with our leadership this year we’ve tried to just continue that on and it’s worked so far,” he said of his final year at Haileybury. “Hopefully we can do what we did last year and win the flag again.”

Jeffs' triple-double leads Cavs home

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers recorded three wins from five games in across Round 10 Big V basketball action.

The State Championship men made up for a loss on Saturday night against Hume City with an impressive win over Werribee at home on Sunday afternoon.

Against Hume City, the Cavs had many contributors with five players scoring in double figures, but it wasn't enough as they fell, 93-104.

Raheem Lemons (22 points, 12 rebounds) was efficient on offence (11-14 FG), but the Cavs were unable make inroads as the Broncos answered every challenge.

Returning home on Sunday, the Cavs jumped out of the blocks against Werribee to grab an early 13-2 lead. But the Devils offence found it's rhythm and the threes began to fall as Werribee put together a 21-6 run to finish the quarter with a 23-19 lead. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

An even middle two quarters were fought out, and the Cavs made a decisive 11-3 run to begin the fourth quarter. Werribee came again, but led

by Louis' grit, the Cavs claimed a 92-83 win.

Louis (20 points, 8 assists, 4 steals, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks) was incredible and involved in everything all game, while Lemons (22 points, 11 rebounds) continued his dominant form.

The Division 1 Women continue to pile on the wins, this time taking care of Camberwell, 73-62.

Jamie-Lee Jeffs was on a different level, posting a monster triple-double of 26 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. The Lady Cavs fed her the ball at every opportunity and Jeffs didn't disappoint - either scoring or finding open teammates.

The Youth League 1 Men also fell to Hume City on Saturday night, 70-78.

Leading by five points at the final break, Casey was overrun by Hume City as the Broncos outscored the Cavs 25-13 in the final 10 minutes.

Oyiti Amum (17 points, 9 rebounds) led the way for Casey, while Mitchell Gooiker (12 points, 12 rebounds) recorded a double-double.

The Youth League 2 Women battled the Western Port Steelers in a defensive slug fest on Saturday evening.

The Lady Cavs pulled away in the final quarter to record a 61-43 win.

Lauren Tuplin (10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks) and Stephanie Leclerc (13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) led the Lady Cavs home.

In round 11 action, the State Championship and Youth League 1 Men feature in a doubleheader from 1:30pm on Sunday at Casey Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Division 1 Women face the Chelsea Gulls on Saturday night and the Youth League 2 Women take on Blackburn on Sunday afternoon.

By Hayley Wildes EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 7 Rowville was no match for Vermont, falling at home 7.8 (50) to 16.16 (112). Vermont took control in the opening quarter and was able to build on that lead throughout the game.

Noble Park fell behind early, before fighting back in the middle two quarters, but was unable to sustain that momentum into the final quarter as Doncaster ran away with a 16.9 (105) to 9.11 (65) win in their clash. Dylan Gordon and Jake Gains were best for the Bulls.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 7 A clinical Dromana took the trip down to Pearcedale on Saturday and walked away with a thumping 111-point win, 6.12 (48) to 25.9 (159).

The Panthers paid for their early inaccuracy to be down by 20 points after kicking 0.4 in the opening quarter, and were down by a whopping 78 points at half time after an 11 goal to one second term.

The home side showed some fight to kick five second half goals, but it was a truly dominant display by the Tigers, particularly Terry Wheeler and Will Geurts, who were all class.

On a dirty day for the Panthers, Travis Bravo once again stood tall with a terrific, fighting individual display.

Meanwhile, Devon Meadows handed Crib Point its first win of 2018 in a disappointing 15-point loss, 9.8 (62) to 6.11 (47).

The Panthers were down all day and couldn't quite reel the early deficit in, with the Magpies kicking three goals to two in the final term to run away with a much needed win.

James Anwyl was at his best for the Burras, while Brandon Mather and Jay Pitto were also impressive. Ultimately, Keysborough's inability to finish off their work in front of goal cost them.

Just as Keysborough fell for the first time this season, so did the Doveton Eagles.

A scoreless opening term saw the Eagles fall behind early and they were unable to recover, losing 17.10 (112) to 7.8 (50).

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 6 Endeavour Hills was ruthless against South Yarra, dominating from start to finish to record a 22.12 (144) to 4.8 (32) win.

Jarrod Marolla (six goals) was brilliant up forward for the Falcons, while Daniel Batson

and Jack Irons won plenty of the ball.

Springvale Districts used a dominant third term to claim a win over Hampton Park, 8.11 (59) to 4.5 (29). Matthew Soutter-Smith was superb for Springvale Districts, while Jackson Fry battled hard all day for Hampton Park.

Hallam was overpowered from the outset against Black Rock. Black Rock's seven goal to zero opening term set up the win, 21.14 (140) to 7.8 (50).

Dylan Thompson and Dean Webb worked hard in what was a dirty day for the Hawks.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 7 Moorabbin's second half blitz saw them come away with a big win over Sandown, 19.11 (125) to 7.14 (56). Bradley Reiner (four goals) was a lone hand up forward for Sandown.

Lyndhurst used a five goal to zero opening term to defeat Cerebus, 11.6 (72) to 3.7 (25).

Jesse Walia and David Ford were fantastic for the Lightning, while Hamish Browning kicked four goals in a strong display up forward.

In what was an enthralling battle, Lyndale fell agonisingly short of Frankston, losing 14.9 (93) to 14.12 (96). Neither team was able to gain the ascendency and in the end the Dolphins were able to hold out the Pumas.

Carrum Patterson Lakes were far too good for Dandenong, running out massive winners, 21.15 (141) to 8.5 (53).

Tyler Neal (six goals) and William Dwyer (five goals) were dominant up forward for Carrum Patterson Lakes, while Michael Scott and Josh Cole were valiant for Dandenong.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 8 St Johns scored an impressive win over Emmaus St Leos, 11.19 (85) to 9.15 (69). Damien Wilsnach and Ben Ayache were sublime for St Johns, while Anthony Brannan and Josh Mourant booted three goals each.

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons made it three-wins on the trot with a hard-fought win over Port Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday.

The Demons stayed in the contest early as the Borough were unable to convert their dominance onto the scoreboard.

A five minute period in the middle of the first term saw Port Melbourne possess all the momentum, but a run of seven behinds did little to give them any scoreboard separation.

Two late goals for Casey, through Harley Balic and Jay Kennedy-Harris, had Casey trailing by just nine points at quarter time, despite Port Melbourne's total domination.

"It was a really challenging first quarter."

Casey coach Jade Rawlings said.

"We weren't at the required level and Port Melbourne were dominating us really - we probably got away with a little bit as they didn't kick accurately."

A quick goal to Jeff Garlett to begin the second quarter set the tone for what was to come.

Port Melbourne's inaccuracy continued in the second quarter, whereas Casey made the most of their chances, booting 6.1 (37) to 2.5 (17).

Five consecutive goals in the quarter, highlighted by back-to-back goals to Corey Wagner, gave the Demons a 12-point half time lead.

Billy Stretch and Wagner's influence on the contest was immense, with 31 disposals between them at the main break.

As Port Melbourne always do, they fought back and four unanswered goals had them 14 points up at the 19 minute mark of the third term.

Casey needed to lift and AFL-listed players Dom Tyson and Tomas Bugg provided just that.

Their late goals trimmed the margin to one-point at three quarter time.

Two goals in the opening three minutes of the final quarter had Casey buzzing and possessing the momentum. But as it had all day long, that momentum shifted once again.

Port Melbourne hit back with two goals to cut Casey's lead to four points.

Casey's pressure forced a Port Melbourne turnover and Bugg got on the end of it to extend the lead to 10 points. When Balic slotted his third major of the day, Casey's lead was 17 points with 10 minutes remaining.

More missed opportunities by the Borough banished any chances of a late comeback for the home side and Casey recorded an impressive win, 15.8 (98) to 10.23 (83). Casey's ability to run over the top of Port Melbourne in that last quarter was impressive and Rawlings talked about that belief within the group. "There was a lot of belief that the way we play stacks up over four quarters.

We play a pretty combative style of footy and a few times this year we've been in games and our last quarters have been strong." Rawlings said.

Stretch was sublime and collected a teamhigh 29 disposals, while Wagner and Tyson were impressive. Balic's presence up forward was vital and he showed Port Melbourne how to finish in front of goal with a game-high three goals and no behinds. The win sees Casey improve to 5-2, sitting third on the ladder after eight rounds - not that Rawlings cares much for ladder positioning during the season.

"I'm not a massive ladder follower during the year; I'm more concerned about how we're actually playing and how we're going about our footy." Rawlings said "We've had some good performances, and a couple that weren't anywhere near our best - we lost two in a row to Richmond and Geelong but we've been able to stabilise and the last three weeks have been a good little patch."

With the Melbourne Demons flying, there are some high-quality AFL players lining up for Casey, the likes of Dom Tyson, Jayden Hunt, Cam Pedersen, Jeff Garlett and Tom Bugg.

Rawlings talked about the competition for spots and how that is driving individual performance and in turn, great team performances in the VFL. "When the AFL program is going well, it's always a great reflection on how the whole program is going." Rawlings said.

"It's hard to create spots in the AFL team at the moment with the way they're playing, but that's the life of a footy player - you have to keep performing and accept your opportunity when it's given."

An important clash against the sixth-placed Williamstown on Sunday afternoon awaits the Demons in Round 9.

Eagles extinguish Wickers

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 6 It's true that each win is just another four points in the context of the season, but for Cranbourne, their extraordinary 12.15 (87) to 7.13 (55) win over Berwick has undoubtedly cemented themselves as a premiership fancy.

It's the kind of win that can build a season after being inconsistent in patches, a performance that is a testament to how much the Eagles have matured under coach Steve O'Brien.

It was all the reigning premiers early, with the Wickers having all the play, but critically without putting it on the scoreboard.

Travis Tuck's stoppage dominance was important early, with his ability to free his arms a highlight. After drawing a free kick inside 50, Tuck slotted the first major of the game, setting the tone. Adding to that, Joseph West was getting the better of Marc Holt in an intriguing battle.

But for all its dominance in clearances and a lop sided inside 50 differential, the Wickers could only manage three goals to walk to the huddle with a 22-point quarter time lead.

While the Eagles managed to stem the rate of ball the Wickers were finding in the middle of the ground as the likes of Ryan Jones, Michael Boland and Brandon Wapshott started to impose an influence, conversion was a major issue.

The home side had their chances but butchered the football towards goal, including a simple miss in front of goal by the usually dead eyed Holt.

Holt eventually found the Eagles' only goal in the first half only five minutes later, and walked into half time somehow still in the game.

In the third, the Eagles began to assert some control over the contest, but importantly, the likes of West and Michael Riseley ensured that the visitors wouldn't give up too much ground, entering the final term with a commanding 20-point lead.

bench due to injuries earlier in the game.

The Eagles slammed on a gobsmacking 8.6 to just two behinds against the competition's most dominant and hunted side to not only take the win, but produce a 52-point turnaround in just 30 minutes of play.

Momentum was well and truly with the home side after slamming on four goals in five minutes, who were defying the logic that playing with players down on the bench eventually mean they run out of legs.

But these Eagles kept on surging, and after five golden minutes of Michael Boland in the ruck, they extraordinary took the lead for the very first time after yet another goal from a centre clearance.

It was a lead they held precious, and with the home crowd beginning to become vocal, the momentum ensured they would slam on another four unanswered goals, with Stewart Kemperman's side unable to stop a quarter of pure dominance.

"It was a good performance - we were under a lot of pressure early, Berwick really brought some heat, and it took us a while to adjust, and once we did, we were able to turn it around and finish it off really strongly again," Steve O'Brien said.

"There were some wasted chances because we didn't execute the way we wanted to, and it was more about getting back to where we wanted to be, that was the biggest difference in the game."

Down at Narre Warren, Magpies coach Matt Shinners is the first to admit his side didn't play that well in their 16.16 (112) to 6.11 (47) win against the struggling Tooradin-Dalmore at Kalora Park.

The first term was full of uncharacteristic errors from the Magpies as the Seagulls pressured the undefeated powerhouse, and kept themselves in the contest to be down by eight points at quarter time.

It took until midway through the second quarter for the Magpies to finally get the match winning break after Cameron Brown slotted a massive goal for the visitors, with some smooth transition resulting in a much needed goal to skipper Dylan Quirk.

The captain's goal seemed to provide the home side with its trademark spark, with two pieces of desperation by champion Michael Collins resulting in a straight forward goal to Nick Scanlon - the man that eventually broke the game with another goal only five minutes later.

Tellingly, the scoreboard started to become lop sided, with the Magpies running off the ground at half time holding on to a 43-point lead.

Although the Seagulls managed to snare three goals to seven to at least add a touch of respectability to the final margin in an effort that would have pleased coach Lachie Gillespie, Shinners said he expects more from his group going forward.

"We weren't that good on Saturday - they came to play and it was always going to be a bit physical, and in the first five minutes we should have probably kicked three goals, and it would have been a different perspective on the game," he said.

"If you don't score, the opposition think they're a chance - they were working us over pretty hard and we were coughing the ball up more than we have in the past, which put them in the game.

"We run deep, the opposition don't, and we're fitter and it worked our way, but we certainly didn't have as much authority as we should have."

A more competitive Doveton took it right up to Officer down at AJ Robinson Oval, but the Kangaroos bounced back after two horror losses, 11.9 (75) to 15.8 (98).

The Kangaroos simply needed to steady the ship and take the four points. They did, and slowly brought back that running game that served them so well in the opening month of the season.

It was a tight start and both sides couldn't be split, with four goals apiece seeing the Kangaroos taking a slender three point quarter time lead.

Both sides had some terrific players standing up, with Mitch Cotter's hands a real highlight, while James Waldon's superb year down back for the Roos continued with a strong opening term.

It was then the second quarter that Doug Koop's side began to flex its muscles and slam on the goals, with one electric passage of play kick-starting a six goal run that saw them enter the main break with a 36-point lead.

That running game continued on for the third quarter, with another three goal quarter stretching the margin out to 42-points.

But the Doves - a young side battling with unexpected departures - battled manfully to enjoy a strong last quarter, with the likes of Matt Stapleton, Matt Jameson and Alex Mastromanno producing some great moments to peg the margin back 23-points at the final margin.

And finally, Pakenham once again showed some encouraging signs but were outclassed

by Beaconsfield, 15.11 (101) to 8.7 (55).

Ultimately the Eagles had too much class with Nathan Langley slotting five, Jake Bowd racking up the footy and Scott Meyer dominating in the air, but Ash Green's side was up to their eyeballs for the first half and can take a lot of pride in controlling parts of the game against a competition heavyweight.

The Lions of 2018 refuse to give in, and after a pair of goals to Adam Alberni, Chris Cardona and Jay Jay Peni, the visitors took control of the first quarter to take an 18-point quarter time lead, keeping the crowd quiet with their ability to force the Eagles into turning the ball over.

As expected, the Eagles shot back, with Langley booting two for the term and the returning Taylor Joyce slotting one. The class of their leaders as well as a more rounded attacking game meant the scoreboard was always going to turn at some stage.

But at half time, the Lions only trailed by five points and were well and truly in the game if they could start the third quarter in a positive fashion and exert the pressure that is slowly beginning to make its mark.

The momentum went the way of the Eagles - as anticipated - after half time, slotting 9.8 to 3.3 in the last hour of play to run out 46 point winners.

Vic Country awaits them

By Hayley Wildes The strength of the Dandenong Stingrays’ squad is evident in their 5-1 start to the 2018 TAC Cup season.

And if anyone needed any more proof, the recent announcement of the Vic Country squad for the 2018 AFL under-18 National Championships further showcases the Rays’ talent.

An incredible 12 Rays will be pulling on the Big V jumper this year, backing up seven selections in 2017.

The Stingrays’ 2018 Vic Country representatives are: Toby Bedford (Rosebud), Riley Bowman (Crib Point), Sam Fletcher (Red Hill), Jake Frawley (Pearcedale), Zac Foot (Langwarrin), William Hamill (Dromoana), Jai Nanscawen (Rosebud), Mitchell Riordan (Beaconsfield), Bailey Schmidt (Seaford), Jai Taylor (Red Hill), Bailey Williams (Pines) and Hayden Young (Somerville).

A total of 38 players were selected in the final squad and 12 representatives are the most of any TAC Cup squad - a huge achievement for the Stingrays’ program and one that speaks volumes of their ability to develop talent.

Bailey Williams and Sam Fletcher return to the squad after being selected as under-agers in 2017, while Zac Foot, William Hamill and Jai Nanscawen have been rewarded after stellar TAC Cup form.

Further showcasing the strength of our local TAC Cup talent, Gippsland Power will have seven Vic Country representatives - all of whom will be making their National Championship debuts in 2018.

The Power’s 2018 Vic Country representa-

tives are: Xavier Duursma (Foster), Sam Flanders (Moe), Matthew McGannon (Fish Creek), Irving Mosquito (Maffra), Kyle Reid (Leongatha), Caleb Serong (Warragul) and Brock Smith (Moe).

The Power also have just one loss to their name after a hot start to the season. The likes of Xavier Duursma, Matthew McGannon and Sam Flanders have been nothing short of sublime over the first seven rounds and will be key players for Vic Country.

Irving Mosquito has been an x-factor for the Power this season and with his uncanny ability to make things happen from nothing, he will be a valuable addition to the Vic Country forward line.

Vic Country’s campaign gets underway against the Allies on 9 June at Spotless Stadium in Sydney.

They take on South Australia the weekend after, before returning home for the big clash against Vic Metro at the MCG on Sunday, 24 June - a curtain-raiser to the AFL game between Collingwood and Carlton.

Their final game sees them face Western Australia at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Friday, 29 June - another curtain-raiser, taking place before the Geelong and Western Bulldogs AFL clash.

In TAC Cup action this week, the Stingrays and Power feature in a Shepley Oval doubleheader on Sunday, 3 June. Dandenong kicks off proceedings at 10.45am against the Sandringham Dragons, followed by Gippsland facing off against the Geelong Falcons at 2.15pm.

Record money up for grabs at Sandown

By Mick Floyd There will be $1 million in prizemoney available on TAB Melbourne Cup night in November, and for defending Cup winner Aston Dee Bee and his trainer Seona Thompson, preparations to defend his crown are already underway.

As part of a suite of changes announced to its TAB Melbourne Cup night programme, the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club has introduced three new races and increased the prize money in seven others to create greyhound racing's first ever million dollar night.

The club's flagship event - the TAB Melbourne Cup - is among the races receiving increased funding and will carry a record $630,000 in prize money, consolidating its position as the world's richest greyhound race.

For Thompson, winning the 2017 TAB Melbourne Cup with Aston Dee Bee was a dream come true and is already turning her sights on the 2018 edition.

"I think it's the pinnacle," she said.

"To be perfectly honest I don't think it's really hit me until now. I was actually just thinking about it a couple of days ago, I was driving to the Meadows on Saturday night and it just came into my head, like 'I won a Melbourne Cup, I'm a Melbourne Cup winning trainer!'

"It's something that I'll never definitely never forget. It's the race that everyone dreams of winning. If you ask any trainer, that's the one they want to win."

The joy of winning a TAB Melbourne Cup is an experience shared between trainer and owner and their family and friends, and she believes that increasing returns to participants in the sport is vital to attract new owners to the sport.

"We're very fortunate that we have some very good owners. They're business people and greyhound racing is their hobby, their love.

"For them, winning the Cup is life changing, and much of the money they win goes back into the dogs. It's the same for trainers - their share of prize money gets put back into their facilities to make things better for the dogs. It's fantastic to see prize money continue to rise and give a greater incentive for more people to get involved in the sport."

In all, there will be eight feature finals on TAB Melbourne Cup night, and all races will carry a minimum of $10,000.

The TAB Melbourne Cup will be run on Friday 23 November.

Locals set to don the Big V AFL Victoria has announced the Vic Metro and Vic Country representative squads ahead of the 2018 AFL National Inclusion Carnival next month, with a duo of St Francis players set to don the Big V. Two squads featuring Victoria's best footballers with an intellectual disability have been chosen, with a further five emergencies selected across both squads for the Carnival, set to take place in Launceston from 18 June to 23.

St Francis pair Kelvin Walters (Country) and Shaun Doll (Metro) will take part in the Carnival, with Sandown Cobras trio Michael Scholz, Damien Clarke and Troy Gibbs (emergency) also set to take part.

Ten players will return to the victorious Metro squad from last year's premiership side, while six new players along with four emergencies from the Victoria FIDA Football League (VFFL) will pull on the representative colours for the first time.

Williamstown Seagulls coach Rob Klemm will once again lead the Metro squad as head coach for the fourth consecutive year after leading his team to a 53-point victory over NSW/ACT in last year's grand final.

Fellow state team Vic Country will welcome seven new players to its representative squad, with 10 players returning to the side after finishing third in 2017.

Selection to the Vic Country squad comes following the first representative practice match between the two country VFFL conferences, which saw over 30 regional players showcase their skills at Bendigo's Weeroona Oval.

Leading the Country squad for the first time is GV Stars coach Steve Reeves. With experience coaching senior interleague with the Kyabram District Football League and Dookie Utd, Reeves will take over from Matt Deegan after two years at the helm.

Held annually, the AFL National Inclusion Carnival provides an opportunity for footballers with an intellectual disability to represent their state in a week-long competition.

All states and territories will have a team represented in the competition, with squads from Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia joining Vic Metro and Vic Country. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
