Council’s film is a Cannes do

By Casey Neill A film shot in Greater Dandenong won an award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

All These Creatures won the Palme d’Or for the best short film at the French event on Sunday 20 May. Greater Dandenong Council collaborated with the filmmaker Charles Williams to produce the movie, which was among eight finalists from almost 4000 submissions.

Council CEO John Bennie said it tackled complex subjects including mental health issues and family relationships.

It was set in the mid-‘90s and told in flashback through a teenage boy, played by 13-year-old Ethiopian-born Yared Scott who was raised by adoptive parents in Melbourne.

“This film tells a universal story that is relatable on so many levels,” Mr Bennie said.

“We are extremely proud to see our local stories being told to an international audience.

“This film has exceeded our expectations and is proof that by working together we can really make a difference.”

All These Creatures was filmed on location in Greater Dandenong, students from local schools appeared as extras and three young people from the community worked on the film to gain industry experience through a mentorship program.

Leap to freedom A woman has tried to jump out of a moving car in Narre Warren North to escape an allegedly violent ex-partner, a court bail hearing has heard on 21 May. The accused Endeavour Hills man, 27, had allegedly twice choked the victim - at her home in February and during a heated drive in the South East suburbs on the night of 19-20 May. According to police, she had remained in Dandenong Hospital for the past two days with swelling around her neck.

She also suffered a lump on her head, grazes on her back and pain to her elbow, the court heard. She was in fear for her life, Det Sen Const Smith said.

In the latter case, he aggressively rebuked her for several hours for going to police with family violence allegations in February, the woman claimed.

Police informant Detective Senior Constable Michael Smith told the court that at one point as he drove her in his mother's car, she asked to be taken back to her vehicle.

He started driving erratically in the opposite direction, telling her he knew of a lookout that no one knows about, Det Sen Const Smith said.

While on Belgrave-Hallam Road, she tried to jump out of the car at 80km/h, she told police. The man allegedly held her in by her jumper.

60km/h, she claimed. Her foot hit the ground, she lost a shoe and a sock as the man held her in by her jumper, the court heard.

As she's tried to flee, the man has caught her, choked her and threatened to kill her, the court was told.

She wriggled out of her jumper at one point, Det Sen Const Smith said.

He grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her jumper in her mouth to stop her screaming, and grabbed the phone out of her hand, She ran to the nearest house without her top on, and was assisted by the residents, the court heard.

At the time, she was protected by a full intervention order against the man, the court heard.

They had split up in February, but were seeing each other regularly over the past three weeks.

At the 21 May bail hearing, the man was required to show compelling reasons for his release.

Police told the court he was an unacceptable risk due to the seriousness of the alleged assaults and threats.

Under cross-examination, the informant said the man had no violent criminal history, nor had he been previously served with intervention orders.

He was remanded for the continuation of the bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 May.

New bail laws bite A string of bail applications fell by the wayside as stricter bail laws came into effect at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 May. Jeanelle Pene, 39, of Cranbourne East, scrapped her bail application after learning she'd have to prove 'exceptional circumstances' to gain her release.

The test applied due to Pene being charged with an indictable charge - drug trafficking while being on bail for another indictable offence.

"It's changing things quickly, isn't it," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said.

'Exceptional circumstances' was a "very high bar", Mr Vandersteen told another prisoner who abandoned their bail app that day.

The applicant had to prove circumstances that were "out of the ordinary" or "unusual", he said.

Pene instead opted to plead guilty to a sentence indication of six months' jail.

She had already served 27 days in remand

since being arrested at her home on 24 April.

She faced up to 23 charges including trafficking meth and several counts of handling stolen goods.

Police searched the home after discovering a stolen Navara with NSW plates parked in the driveway, the court heard.

Inside the home, they found Pene as well as drugs and other stolen goods including a Subaru car and power tools in the garage, a credit card, a Medicare card, two number plates, two car keys and five lap tops.

Pene was found with the drug 'ice'. A small amount of cannabis and two ecstasy tablets were also found in the home, the court heard.

Her trafficking charge was made out by her own admissions. She allegedly told police that she was selling drugs to help pay off a $20,000 Centrelink debt.

The stolen property had been left at the house by other people, she allegedly said.

She also pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing a $10,000 gas-monitoring clam from

a City of Casey landfill in Cranbourne on 28 March.

She also pleaded guilty to refusing a drugdriving test and driving an unregistered car with false number plates.

Pene faces a further hearing for allegedly breaching a County Court-imposed CCO. When the bail laws passed in June 2017, State Attorney-General Martin Pakula said they were important laws to "make Victoria safer".

"We're making it harder than ever to get bail in Victoria, and we're making community safety a higher priority."

The 'exceptional circumstances' test applies for alleged serious indictable offences committed on bail, summons, parole, a community correction order or under sentence.

The law also introduces a 'compelling reasons' test for bail applicants charged with offences such as rape, armed robbery and persistently breaching a family-violence intervention order.

Pets need new homes - give them shelter

By Casey Neill Keysborough's animal shelter needs homes for more than 100 animals.

The Australian Animal Protection Society (AAPS) is leaving Homeleigh Road and needs to place about 100 cats and 26 dogs before Wednesday 20 June.

All adoption fees will be halved until that date.

"Our current shelter at Keysborough has been acquired by the Education Department," manager Natasha Marginis explained.

"Although we have purchased a new property to develop, it won't be ready in time to meet the deadline when we have to vacate."

AAPS found a temporary location on Bangholme Road in Dandenong South.

"Due to all the council requirements that we need to conform to, we are greatly concerned we may end up with a number of animals and no place to house them," she said.

Ms Marginis urged foster carers, rescue groups and the general community to step forward with temporary or permanent homes.

She said the management committee, elected 12 months ago, was charged with moving the shelter by 30 June.

"It soon became apparent that the site purchased in Perry Road, Keysborough, would not be ready in time, so the search began for a temporary site," she said.

"After visiting all manner of properties in the Dandenong area, each with their own logistical problems, we finally found a temporary home that ticked most of the boxes and we rejoiced.

"We expected a few problems in readying this site for animal use, however not the roller coaster ride we've endured."

A passenger threatened an Uber driver with a syringe in Dandenong, police allege.

Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Chris Ryan said the victim, 43, collected a passenger in Scott Street about 6.15pm on Wednesday 16 May. He alleged the passenger produced a syringe and demanded money, and the driver pulled over.

The 22-year-old woman allegedly took the victim's mobile phone and left the vehicle.

Police arrested her on Hemming Street a short time later.

Sen Const Ryan urged any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A Keysborough woman caught a burglar climbing out of her laundry window.

Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Chris Ryan said the incident occurred at a Finisterre Drive home about 12.30am on Friday 18 May. The victim, 55, couldn't provide any description of the man she saw.

Sen Const Ryan urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A driver allegedly struck a police officer to the head with a stick during a routine intercept in Hallam.

Police arrested a man following the incident on Sunday 20 May. Officers said they tried to pull the car over but it kept going.

At 11am, they found it parked in Old Gunns Court with the driver still inside.

Police said the driver became aggressive when they approached and resisted arrest, before grabbing a stick from the back of the car.

He struck a senior constable to the head, causing cuts and bruises.

Police deployed OC spray and the man fled, but they found him nearby a short time later and arrested him.

CFA crews extinguished a flaming pile of tyres and a gas cylinder in Lyndhurst.

A security patrol spotted the flames about 3.30am on Friday 18 May and notified firefighters.

They were concerned about the gas bottle in particular, as its blast radius could have been up to 500 metres.

Greater Dandenong CIU is investigating the deliberately-lit blaze in Glasscocks Road.

They said the block was being used as an unofficial dumping ground.

Flamin’ hell Police allegedly seized a home-made flamethrower and a baton wrapped in barbed wire from a Doveton home.

The Divisional Family Violence Unit executed a search warrant in Apple Court on Friday 18 May. They charged a 40-year-old man with aggravated burglary and other offences.

He was remanded in custody.

They arrested a 27-year-old woman on numerous warrants and she was also remanded in custody.

Police charged a 33-year-old man with possessing a drug of dependence. He was bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court in July.

Gateway open wide

By Casey Neill Award-winning social enterprise Waverley Industries has expanded into Greater Dandenong and is promising to boost job opportunities.

It’s employing adults with disabilities at the former Gateway Industries site in Progress Street, Dandenong South, following a merger with the financially-strapped disability enterprise.

The Journal reported last September that Gateway’s second-biggest customer, the City of Casey, had ended its eight-year relationship and created a $180,000 shortfall.

We revealed on Wednesday 16 May that Gateway support staff finished up on Monday 14 May, but its 54 supported workers would continue employment with Waverley.

CEO Frank Cresia said Waverley’s mission was to provide support and employment and training in a viable and sustainable business manner.

“A third of our workforce is unfunded,” he said, referring to government subsidies.

“We’re building a resilience to funding.

“The business is growing.

“Employees with disabilities have greater opportunities to earn more money.

“There’s less reliance on the disability support pension, or NDIS. “If people are able to earn more they’re going to improve their own lifestyle.

“By improving their lifestyle it stimulates the economy.”

Mr Cresia said Waverley would honour Gateway contracts, including litter pick-up and street furniture cleaning services for Greater Dandenong Council.

He said there could even be opportunities to perform more work for the council and employ more workers.

“We now support 350 people with disabilities, plus our qualified support staff,” he said.

“Then we’ve got work experience with students from special schools - that’s about 100.

“With volunteers, that brings us well over the 550 people that we support through Waverley Industries across the three sites.

“We need to put more resources, particularly in sales and marketing.”

Gateway started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative.

Former Gateway CEO Alan Warwick said: “It is sad but what we set out to achieve is getting all the employees a job and that’s what we got through Waverley.

Drug trafficker back into it

Rat-run role A half-million dollar project is tackling ratrunning and speeding in Greater Dandenong streets.

Councillors awarded a $536,586 contract for local area traffic management (LATM) works to Blue Peak Constructions at their Monday 14 May meeting.

Engineering services director Julie Reid said Beau Vorno Avenue in Keysborough and Eagle Drive and Terrigal Drive in Noble Park North would receive traffic calming devices.

She said they would address concerns that local residents raised regarding rat-running and inappropriate vehicles speeds.

Eagle and Terrigal drives will receive raised safety platforms at key intersections, and a change in priority treatment at the intersection of Eagle Drive and Alpine Crescent.

"A change in priority treatment means an intersection will be modified to give one direction priority over another, by changing which movements are required to give way," Ms Reid said.

Beau Vorno Avenue will have raised safety platforms where it intersects with both Liverpool and Caribbean drives.

Ms Reid said raised safety platforms had been used with great success at other locations including Bundeena Avenue, Keysborough, and a change in priority treatment had worked well in Somerset Drive, Dandenong North.

Six days after being put on a corrections order, a serial drug-trafficker returned to his old locale with bags of ‘ice’, measuring scales and $2870, a court has heard.

Steven Wood pleaded guilty to his fourth drug-trafficking offence, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court via a custody video link on 14 May. He had been arrested after being found walking on Mossgiel Park Drive, Endeavour Hills about 4.19am on 27 March.

Police seized 21.64 grams of methamphetamine in four bags of differing amounts.

Wood also carried a gram of cannabis, two mobile phones, the cash and scales - as well as a “graffiti implement”.

A defence lawyer told the court that the drugs were for Wood’s personal use, the scales were to manage his drug intake and that he had two phones because one of the phones was broken.

Wood claimed he’d just won the cash mainly in $100, $50 and $20 denominations on pokies at Hallam Hotel.

“It’s trafficking based on the amount he’s found with, not on buying and selling off to other people,” the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the ice was more than seven times the minimum traffickable amount, the “significant” quantity of cash and the scales.

Wood was jailed for six months for trafficking and possessing the suspected proceeds of crime.

50 years ago 30 May 1968 Sound shell 'too small' The newest acquisition to art and culture - a sound shell in Dandenong Park - was referred to at Monday's Dandenong council meeting as a white elephant.

"We must look closer at building proposals in future and see there is no more white elephants," said Cr K Miller.

Cr Miller said the sound shell was built for use by Dandenong RSL and Citizens Band, but was found to be too small for the band to practice in.

"We allowed an architect to draw plans for a building which is unsuitable for its intended purpose," said Cr Miller.

"I understand the architect said it was never designed for band practice yet we let

the plans go through, and we have a building which in main is of little use."

20 years ago 1 June 1998 Sale yards cruel Cruelty inflicted on farm animals in the Dandenong sale yards is a crime of which many of us are unaware, said Peter Hansen of Endeavour Hills.

"I have seen photographs in Action Magazine showing the appalling treatment of animals.

"One account was of a cow with an open sore festering with maggots being hit by children with sticks."

The RSPCA has now stepped in and had animal protection officers inspect the unloading and auctioning of animals.

Asylum seekers swamp aid centre A centre in Dandenong that feeds and clothes asylum seekers has been forced to close its doors. Asylum Seekers Centre manager David Spitteler said he has to make the unenviable decision because the centre has been "swamped".

He has had to ration the centre's fresh and packaged food aid among the 319-andrising asylum seekers registered.

Mr Spitteler registers individuals with bridging visas, and limits aid to six weeks.

The asylum seekers receive an allowance of 89 per cent of Centrelink benefits - little more than $200 per week.

"These people have nothing," Mr Spitteler says.

"But if I didn't put in these controls, I'd have up to 800 people turning up.

"It shows people aren't getting the support they need."

Australia’s burger craze, borrowed from the USA, shows no signs of slowing down.

Twenty-one Dandenong Market traders cashed in on the trend with 25 different burger creations for the event.

The pizza burger merged two takeaway icons. Dandy Pizza served up a beef patty, cheese, fresh tomato and spinach between two margherita pizzas.

The pizzas had crispy bases and soft tops with just enough cheese and garlic.

The mince inside was packed with flavour and the fresh tomato helped to cut through the richness.

Chef Tim Hollands said there was also a Dandee Donut with a Tim Tam middle, jam and whipped cream on the menu, plus a cupcake with a brownie pattie and fondant lettuce and cheese.

Short film, long run

By Casey Neill Entries for this year's Short Cuts Film Festival tripled to 1900 films.

Curator Richard Moore cast his eye over each one to select 18 to be screened at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong on Saturday 23 June at 7pm.

"I went mad," he laughed.

"I can honestly say that I didn't watch all of all of them.

"After three minutes if you're not happy you go to the next one."

From a shortlist of 50, a panel selected the finalists that will deliver fun, entertainment and a great mix styles - drama, animation, documentary and micro-films from different countries.

"It's not a snooty art event at all," Mr Moore said.

"It's totally accessible.

"I really believe a film program should be entertaining.

"They're to meant to bore you at all."

Mr Moore joined Short Cuts when the event started three years ago, excited by "starting something new in a place where there's such a vibrant culture".

"We want to put Dandenong on the map for film and also to try and get new stories and things coming out of Dandenong as well," he said.

He said the long-term plan was to encourage more entries from Greater Dandenong, "get the colleges and schools and all those places thinking about film and media to try and nurture the film culture in the region".

Mr Moore has been involved in film and television production and direction, and ran the Melbourne and Brisbane film festivals.

"I'm a creature of screen and film," he said.

One, The Lost Property Office, came from former Lyndale Secondary College student Daniel Agdag.

The nine-minute animation is made from cardboard and has won two prizes in other competitions.

"It really is a gorgeous film," Mr Moore said.

Audience members will get to vote for their favourite film on the night to earn a $500 prize, as will Greater Dandenong Mayor Yourhorn Chea.

A young Dandenong leader spoke on behalf of the South-East at a celebration for the region.

The Victorian Governor Linda Dessau hosted the event to highlight the area's achievements and diversity at Government House on Thursday 17 May. More than 600 community members from the shires of Cardinia and Mornington Peninsula, and the cities of Casey, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Kingston and Monash attended.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the gathering was to celebrate the South-East's achievements.

Aishwarya Pokkuluri, 22, was honoured at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards for her volunteering work with young leaders.

She delivered a speech on behalf of the community, explaining that she moved to Melbourne from India as a five-year-old and now worked as a quality assurance assistant at Cobs Popcorn in Dandenong South.

South-East Melbourne (SEM) chair Simon McKeon said the diverse region was home to more than 1.2 million residents, "many of whom have come here from across the globe to make their home, raise families and create jobs as well as seek and create opportunities".

"This was a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity and achievements of the south east Melbourne community," he said.

By Casey Neill A $28,500 grant is boosting film skills at Wallara.

The Dandenong-based service for adults with disabilities received the cash from Gandel Philanthropy.

The trust's Australian grant programs manager Alexandra White visited Wallara's Potter Street headquarters on Monday 21 May to see first-hand the funding's impact.

Wallara's Karen Scholey said the money set up the Wallara TV School of Media and Communication.

"Wallara TV has been going from strength to strength over the past six years," she said.

"Some of our clients who got in front of the camera for Wallara TV expressed interest in learning filming and editing skills."

"Some of them are shared by our corporate partners."

Bella Firth has cerebral palsy that affects her speech but is making great progress through this program.

"She's just an absolute whizz on the computers," Ms Scholey said.

"She's broken down all the barriers."

Super sounds for Springvale The music behind everyone's favourite heroes and villains will get audiences singing along in Springvale.

Heroes versus Villains is the theme for the City of Greater Dandenong Band's eighth annual cabaret concert.

The band has already been out and about at Australia Day celebrations, Dandenong Anzac Day commemorations and more this year.

The concert will feature more than 40 musicians and is the band's major fund-raiser.

The night will also include a special performance from Springvale Brass, the band's

training program for the young and the young at heart.

There'll be prizes for the best costumes in the audience, and guests can bring along their own food and drinks.

Join the City of Greater Dandenong Band at Springvale Town Hall on Saturday 30 June.

Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Sharing stories - forever New arrivals are creating a lasting legacy while brushing up on their English skills.

Our Stories is a new Greater Dandenong Libraries program that will capture invaluable stories.

It will bring together community members who want to share their stories, English tutors, professional storytellers and community groups.

Over six workshops they will produce an English learning kit, which will use personal stories to create an educational book and audio disc.

The first two workshops were with artist and educator Lana Woolf, who helped partici-

pants to start their stories.

Follow up sessions will match storywriters with readers who will record the stories for the audio disc.

The Our Stories booklet and CD will be published in time for Literacy Week in September, and a public launch will be held in Dandenong Library to celebrate the program's completion.

An Adult Literacy Innovation Grant funded the project with State Library Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria Network support.

City of Greater Dandenong is delivering the project in partnership with Springvale Neighbourhood House, Chisholm Institute and the Social Knitwork.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… The numbers are up Greater Dandenong Council's latest quarterly performance report revealed a 12 per cent jump in attendance at Dandenong's Drum Theatre in the past year.

The libraries attracted 7648 participants through in-house and outreach programs.

Family services engaged 79 families and 183 children, providing 1840 contact hours of support.

More than 40,000 kilograms of material from 3748 households was collected during the Homecycle event, which ran from 22 January to 3 February.

Win for Bunurong Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South was awarded gold for the Urban Design category at the Melbourne Design Awards.

The nod celebrates creativity and innovation in the process of designing and shaping cities, towns and villages, and is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric.

Bunurong manager Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) said the park was designed to respectfully honour and celebrate life within a vast and vibrant native landscape.

Worth missing the royal wedding for Meghan and Harry weren't the only good news story on Saturday 19 May. At 6.30pm the supervising sergeant for the Greater Dandenong Police Service area received a call to help locate a missing 80-yearold woman with dementia.

A sergeant at North Melbourne was with the missing person's family and was tracking her movements through a personal safety duress alarm that was fitted with a GPS. With help from this modern technology, Dandenong police found the missing woman walking on Corrigan Road, Noble Park.

She'd caught the train from Southern Cross Station.

They took her back to the Dandenong Police Station and gave her a cuppa while she waiting for her family to pick her up.

Dandenong Creek pollution Despite its name, the pollution in Dandenong Creek has nothing to do with Dandenong the suburb.

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) took the unusual step of taking local advertising space and calling for community to find who was behind chemical dumping that polluted Dandenong Creek around Heathmont on Saturday 19 May. Foam floated along the stream and onto the banks. The EPA assured the Journal that no illeffect would be felt in the section of the creek that ran through Dandenong itself.

"The community, including workers in industrial precincts, are our best eyes and ears and any new information could go a long way to finding the perpetrator," EPA spokesman Damian Wells said.

"If you have information about the Dandenong Creek incident, or a similar incident that happened on 22 May at Ferny Creek in Ferntree Gully, we want to know.

Jill Brown walked away with a new wardrobe and two crucial pieces of advice after winning a $500 shopping spree at Dandenong Plaza.

The advice: good underwear and layering are the keys to good dressing.

“It worked out so well because I had my son’s deb ball on Saturday night so I wore one of the new outfits. If I hadn’t gone shopping with Jo I would have worn the same old things I always wear that my kids are getting sick of seeing me in.“ Jill said she was happy to be guided by Jo, who runs her own styling business, and was surprised that everything Jo suggested suited her.

Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) sporting superstar Sara Blicavs has joined Berwick Mazda as their latest Ambassador.

Berwick Mazda partnered with the Dandenong Basketball Association over 10 years ago and has supported the WNBL Rangers through some momentous highlights over the years. One of these highlights has been watching Sara Blicavs's career grow.

Sara made her international debut with the Under-17 program at the FIBA Oceania Under-16 Championship in 2009. She also represented Australia at the FIBA Under-17 and Under-19 World Championship in France and Chile. Her team at the time - the Opals - won gold at the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship.

She almost hit Olympian status, participating in the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro, in January 2016.

Her parents, Andris and Karen Blicavs, both played for Australian national basketball teams and competed in the 1976 and 1984 Olympics.

Her siblings are also equally active. Mark Blicavs currently plays for the Geelong Football Club, and her brother, Kris Blicavs, is a Geelong Supercats SEABL player as well as a personal trainer at Sam Wood's 'The Woodshed' in Brighton.

Her new sister-in-law, Steph Blicavs (nee Cummings) is also a fellow WNBL Jayco Rangers player.

Tears in Battle of Britton

By Mick Floyd Tornado Tears showed why he's regarded as greyhound racing's next big thing after prevailing in a thrilling finish to the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

But the well supported favourite - opening at $26 in early markets before jumping at $2 - was made to earn his victory. Beginning cleanly from Box 7, the Robert Britton-trained star settled behind kennelmates Benali and Quick Jagger and the trio soon established a gap on their rivals. Tornado Tears made his move down the back straight and appeared set to take control of the race, however he lost momentum attempting to take a gap between the leaders.

Meanwhile, Tornado Tears' litter brother Rippin' Sam began to make his move. Spotting the leaders 10 lengths with 300 metres to run, he unleashed an almighty finishing burst to close to within a length turning for home before finding trouble himself and checking wide on the home turn.

It set up a spectacular finish to the world's richest race for stayers. Quick Jagger railed under the tiring Benali to take the lead before being reeled in by Tornado Tears in the shadows of the post as Rippin' Sam powered down the outside to just miss upstaging his litter brother.

The three greyhounds were separated by little more than a length on the line and gave Robert Britton the trifecta. Britton's fourth runner, Benali, finished fifth.

"It was nerve racking from the start of the week with four dogs in it. To be quite honest, I was glad when tonight came and could get the race run," said Britton following his historic victory.

"I thought Tornado Tears got a great run into the race and I thought that off the back he looked a winner, then he got jammed up between the two leaders. As I switched to watch Sam, he went up in the air, and from that point on I was trying to work out where my dogs are.

It was a nerve racking race."

Tornado Tears claimed a famous win in Thursday night's $250,000 Sandown Cup. Affectionately known as 'Batman' due to his distinctive markings, Tornado Tears is fast developing an enthusiastic fan base with some pundits believing he has the potential to be a once in a generation stayer.

Britton has long been regarded as one of the country's premier conditioners and is no stranger to success at the sport's highest level,

however leading home the trifecta in the nation's premier staying event is a particular highlight of his training career.

"It's massive," he said.

"The Sandown Cup to me is the ultimate for stayers and always has been. It's not easy to win - I tried for probably 40 years and it was only last year we won it for the first time.

The Sandown Cup was the final leg of the club's Group 1 triple-header that had earlier seen exciting youngster My Redeemer overcome early trouble to claim the HarrisonDawson, while Elevated gave Harry Manolitsis his first Group 1 win when victorious in the Sapphire Crown.

A sweet dozen Stingrays dominate Vic Country squad

By Hayley Wildes The strength of the Dandenong Stingrays' squad is evident in their 5-1 start to the 2018 TAC Cup season. And if anyone needed any more proof, the recent announcement of the Vic Country squad for the 2018 AFL under-18 National Championships further showcases the Rays' talent.

An incredible 12 Rays will be pulling on the Big V jumper this year, backing up seven selections in 2017.

The Stingrays' 2018 Vic Country representatives are: Toby Bedford (Rosebud), Riley Bowman (Crib Point), Sam Fletcher (Red Hill), Jake Frawley (Pearcedale), Zac Foot (Langwarrin), William Hamill (Dromoana), Jai Nanscawen (Rosebud), Mitchell Riordan (Beaconsfield), Bailey Schmidt (Seaford), Jai Taylor (Red Hill), Bailey Williams (Pines) and Hayden Young (Somerville).

A total of 38 players were selected in the final squad and 12 representatives are the most of any TAC Cup squad - a huge achievement for the Stingrays' program and one that speaks volumes of their ability to develop talent.

Bailey Williams and Sam Fletcher return to the squad after being selected as under-agers in 2017, while the likes of Zac Foot, William Hamill and Jai Nanscawen have been rewarded after stellar TAC Cup form.

Earlier this year, Williams talked about the takeaways from his 2017 Nationals campaign and getting the chance to pull on the jumper again this year.

"I thought stepping up to the nationals was really big for me because it was a lot more professional than I was used to." Williams said.

"Representing Victoria again is going to be massive. I think this year, we're going to be fairly strong and be ready to have a really big impact on the Championships. It should be awesome."

Vermont took control in the opening quarter and was able to build on that lead throughout the game.

Noble Park fought back valiantly in the middle two quarters, but was unable to sustain that momentum into the final quarter as Doncaster ran away with a 16.9 (105) to 9.11 (65) win in their clash. Dylan Gordon and Jake Gains were best for the Bulls.

In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Keysborough suffered their first loss of the season. Caulfield took over in the third term and ran out 10.10 (70) to 7.14 (56) winners. James Anwyl was at his best for the Burras, while Brandon Mather and Jay Pitto were also impressive. Ultimately, Keysborough’s inability to finish off their work in front of goal cost them.

Just as Keysborough fell for the first time this season, so did the Doveton Eagles.

A scoreless opening term saw the Eagles fall behind early and they were unable to recover, losing 17.10 (112) to 7.8 (50).

In Division 3, Endeavour Hills was ruthless against South Yarra, dominating from start to finish to record a 22.12 (144) to 4.8 (32) win.

Jarrod Marolla (six goals) was brilliant up forward for the Falcons, while Daniel Batson and Jack Irons won plenty of the ball.

Springvale Districts used a dominant third term to claim a win over Hampton Park, 8.11 (59) to 4.5 (29).

Matthew Soutter-Smith was superb for Springvale Districts, while Jackson Fry battled hard all day for Hampton Park.

Hallam was overpowered from the outset against Black Rock. Black Rock’s seven goal to zero opening term set up the win, 21.14 (140) to 7.8 (50).

Tyler Neal (six goals) and William Dwyer (five goals) were dominant up forward for Carrum Patterson Lakes, while Michael Scott and Josh Cole were valiant for Dandenong.

In Division 2 of the VAFA, St Johns scored a win over Emmaus St Leos, 11.19 (85) to 9.15 (69). Damien Wilsnach and Ben Ayache were sublime for St Johns.

In Round 8 SEABL action, the Dandenong Rangers travelled to Geelong on Friday night and came away with one win and one loss.

The Rangers women got the night off to a strong start with a hard-fought win over the Supercats.

The Rangers took a 27-21 lead into the quarter time break and built that into a 42-30 advantage at the main break - thanks largely to their stellar defence.

With Tessa Lavey and Tayla Roberts controlling the game, the Rangers continued to build on their lead and held a 16-point lead at the final break.

To the Supercats’ credit, they came out on a mission in the fourth quarter. The lead was cut to just six points with two minutes remaining, but Tess Madgen calmed things down by scoring a bucket and then hitting two clutch free-throws.

Dandenong eventually ran out 10-point winners, 76-66.

Roberts continued her fine form with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Lavey was dominant with 17 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Kiera Rowe added 18 points. The Rangers boast a 6-4 record.

Unfortunately for Dandenong, the men’s side couldn’t make it two wins on the night as they struggled to keep pace with the Supercats.

Falling behind early, the Rangers trailed by 12 points after the first quarter and it stayed around that margin for much of the night as they were unable to make any significant inroads. Nathan Herbert was simply unstoppable for the Supercats as he caught fire from deep to drain eight of his 13 shots behind the arc. He finished with 32 points and 5 rebounds in an electric shooting display.

The major difference in the game was three-point shooting. The Supercats connect-
