MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It is high time the Southern Downs Regional Council upped the level of urban water restrictions in the region (see this week's cover story on pages 4 and 5).

The council's protocol up until this week was not to increase restrictions until Leslie Dam reached 7.5 per cent of full capacity.

With the dam currently at just over 10 per cent - and falling - many including myself had expected the council to make this move long before now.

Let's hope it isn't too little too late.

This region was last week droughtdeclared once again and right now we are heading into the driest part of the year.

I live out of town and am reliant on rainwater and creek water for my domestic use and like other out-oftowners I am used to being careful with water.

While many town-dwellers are of course very water-conscious, the fact of the matter is urban water use can only realistically be minimised by enforceable restrictions. And perhaps they should be even higher than the medium level introduced this week.

With SunWater modelling showing Leslie Dam will be empty by this time next year if we only receive minimal rainfall between now and then, increased urban restrictions are a no-brainer - and well overdue.

The Salvation Army is calling on Southern Downs and Granite Belt community groups, sporting clubs, workplaces, families and individuals to get involved in its annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock to help raise $7.5 million this weekend, 26 to 27 May. The money raised from the Red Shield Appeal doorknock will go towards The Salvation Army's vast network of social services to help those in need. In a typical week, the Salvos provide over 17,000 beds for those suffering homelessness, 40,000 meals for the hungry, over 1,400 financial counselling sessions and refuge for over 100 women affected by domestic violence.

Warwick's Salvation Army Lieutenant Zak Churchill said the Salvos are aiming to mobilise 70,000 volunteers for the doorknock to help meet the growing demand on its services.

"Every dollar counts, just $28 helps children at risk of homelessness participate in an after-school program, $60 provides a food hamper so that a struggling family doesn't have to go hungry, and $79 provides one day of support for a family to find a home.

"Even a relatively small contribution can

NEW VIDEO PROMOTES BENEFITS OF REGION The Southern Downs Regional Council says our region is set to become South East Queensland's "next major growth area", with the launch last week of the first phase of its new investment and business attraction campaign, 'Invest Southern Downs'.

The council says Invest Southern Downs "supports its broader efforts to attract more residents to the region".

"Over the next three years, the Southern Downs will welcome more than 1000 new jobs across a range of industries," a council spokeswoman said.

"The council is working closely with new and expanding businesses, which are looking to establish themselves or expand in the region to ensure their long-term success and sustainability and to grow the region's economy," she said.

"Invest Southern Downs will deliver a range of economic benefits to the region including increasing the number of jobs in the region, opportunity for growth in the

region's existing sectors and driving new business and the production of goods and services.

"In recent weeks the council has launched its new Invest Southern Downs video and 'Life on the Southern Downs' brochure, the first of a long line-up of marketing activities planned as a part of the campaign.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie has welcomed a new state government watchdog to be established to independently handle complaints against local councils and councillors.

The Palaszczuk ALP government last week announced $7.4 million in extra funding for the State's Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) to establish the office of an 'independent assessor' for local government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the four-year recurrent funding for the CCC would employ eight frontline police investigators and establish a covert human intelligence unit.

"Like Queensland ratepayers and residents, we also want to see an end to the cloud that hovers over local government so local councils can get on with their job of serving their local communities," the premier said.

She said over the past three years the CCC's investigation of public sector corruption had increased 57 per cent and over the past 12 months there has been a rise in the number of complaints in the public (six per cent) and local government sectors (41 per cent).

Cr Dobie told the media last week mayors and CEOs weren't trained to undertake investigations.

"The process places a lot of pressure on those who currently have to investigate and often they do it in isolation" the mayor said.

Cr Dobie has also called for the new assessor to deal with what she has described as "vexatious" or timewasting complaints against councils, which she says are an "easy target" for the public.

The government's announcement of the new independent assessor follows a host of corruption charges laid against former Ipswich City Council senior figures, including exmayor Paul Pisasale. ●

he Southern Downs Regional Council has finally moved to increase urban water restrictions as the region prepares for a long, dry winter.

From next week restrictions will

move from the current 'permanent' level to 'medium', with the main difference being further tightening of outdoor water use on allocated days.

The move follows the drought declaration issued for the region by the state

But perhaps a more ominous outlook is SunWater's forward projection for Leslie Dam - which shows it will be effectively empty by this time next year if only minimum monthly inflows are received, based on past rainfall records.

SunWater - which owns Leslie Dam and supplies raw water to the council for urban supplies, along with irrigation water for downstream farmers - uses a 'water storage forecast tool' to examine 12-month outlooks for its storages across Queensland.

According to its website, SunWater's tool "plots the future 12-month dam volumes for two different dam inflow scenarios".

"The first plot shows the dam volumes that could be expected under the average monthly inflows that relate to each dam," the website states.

"The second plot is a much drier scenario and shows the dam volumes that might be possible under the minimum monthly inflows that have been experienced for each dam."

The modelling shows that under the

"much drier scenario" Leslie Dam will reach "dead storage volume" - of 2475ML or 2.33 per cent of capacity - by late May 2019, and will drop to a dangerously low level by September this year.

The 'dead storage level' is reached when water can no longer be pumped from the dam, even if the dam is not completely empty.

The forecast is based on average annual water allocation demands for both urban and irrigation use over the last three years.

COUNCIL FINALLY ACTS A statement released by the council on Monday of this week said Leslie Dam "is currently at 10.78 per cent (11,454ML) capacity, while Storm King Dam is 81.2 per cent full (1608ML) and Connelly Dam is at 73.4 per cent (1625ML) capacity".

Storm King Dam is Stanthorpe's urban water supply, while the similarly councilowned Connolly Dam south of Warwick is the Rose City's secondary urban supply, but both dams are significantly

smaller than Leslie.

Mayor Tracy Dobie this week reminded residents of the importance of continuing to conserve water at home and in the workplace.

"The Southern Downs has received very minimal rainfall across the entire region in past months and with little rainfall predicted during the winter months, water restrictions have been increased to assist with water conservation," Cr Dobie said.

"I encourage all residents to be mindful of their water usage and to use water efficiently and responsibly both at home and at work."

The mayor said that "in the near future" the council will provide free shower timers and a sprinkler replacement scheme to provide water efficient sprinklers to residents, as well as a showerhead exchange program where the community can swap old shower heads for free water efficient ones.

"Water is a precious resource and there are simple things we can all do to be more

water efficient - check for leaks, take shorter showers, install water efficient devices and appliances and start taking note of how much water you use so you can see where savings can be made," Cr Dobie said.

She said the council's Water and Waste Water team is currently working on a new Water Efficiency Plan to replace the former Drought Management Plan.

"Council is also currently undertaking the recruitment of a new Local Laws Officer whose duties will include assisting with the enforcement of water restrictions," Cr Dobie said.

"Water restrictions and any penalties for non-compliance are authorised under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008.

"Residents are reminded to please become familiar with activities and timeframes permitted under medium level water restrictions by reviewing the water restrictions table on council's website www. sdrc.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 MY SDRC." ● Slowly, but surely, dropping ...

Andrew Gale of AG Licensing spends more time out at Leslie Dam than most of us, undertaking boat licensing and training.

He's been watching the dam level slowly - or perhaps not so slowly dipping down in recent months and says he isn't surprised by SunWater's storage projections, although he thinks supplies may last "a little longer" past next May in the 'worst-case' scenario.

"I just question what appears to have been releases for irrigation late last year when the dam was around the 15 per cent mark, which I'm pretty sure is when they (SunWater) have to stop those releases," he said this week.

"I also question the new pipeline from Connolly Dam to Morgan Park and the Warwick Industrial Estate.

"Is that water committed for those places instead of being a backup (urban) supply?"

Andrew said the water's edge at Leslie Dam appeared to have contracted more than three metres down the shore in as many weeks.

He has also questioned a disparity in the current Leslie Dam level between the 'official' SunWater reading and that shown on the Bureau of Meteorology dam storage app, which indicates Leslie is actually at just nine per cent of full capacity.

Warwick's official rainfall so far for May is 11.2mm (Hermitage), while Stanthorpe (at Leslie Parade) has recorded just 2.4mm. ●

WORKS TO EXTEND SEWER’S LIFE The Southern Downs Regional Council has engaged a contractor to reline sections of Council's gravity sewer main network. The relining work commenced in Warwick last Wednesday 16 May. Where required, the work involves contractor staff accessing private properties to reline damaged or at-risk sections of Warwick's gravity sewer network. Residents will be given at least 24 hours' notice before contractors enter their property to commence the works.

Relining a sewer main extends the life of the infrastructure for up to 50 years,

deferring the cost of full replacement of the mains, while addressing water inflow into the sewer network.

In the coming weeks, 1.5kms of Warwick's sewer main will be relined, while 3.5kms of sewer main relining has already been completed in Stanthorpe.

Residents are encouraged to locate their Overflow Relief Gully (ORG) on their property to ensure it is not obstructed.

An ORG can vary in appearance. The image shows the standard modern ORG design. Generally, they are 100mm to 150mm in diameter with a plastic or metal

alloy grate and a concrete surround. They are installed close to the external walls of the home.

Sewer main relining involves steam curing of the PVC liner located in the main.

Residents are reminded not to be alarmed by any visible steam. Steam is a normal part of the relining process.

Contractors and SDRC staff will be aiming to minimise disruptions to residents while completing these works.

NEWS ALPACA SNIPER PROBE Stanthorpe police are continuing to call for information from the public about the shooting of a group of alpacas on a Glen Aplin property earlier this month.

Police were called to a Mount Stirling Road property on Saturday 5 May when the animals’ owners found five of their alpacas dead and one critically injured in their paddock.

The injured animal had to be euthanised and an examination by a local veterinarian indicated that the animals had been shot with a smallcalibre firearm sometime between Wednesday 2 May and Thursday 3 May. Senior Constable Jim Ellis of the Stanthorpe Police said the animals would have been defenceless and it was hard to comprehend the senseless violence.

“Disturbingly this is the second incident of shooting deaths involving alpacas on rural properties, with seven killed at Lyra last September,” he said.

All seven animals were shot with a small-calibre firearm.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Items discussed during a confidential session at yesterday’s Southern Downs Regional Council May meeting at Stanthorpe included a management agreement for the Stanthorpe Aquatic Centre, management of camping at Warwick’s Connolly Dam and Washpool Reserve and the sale of council land by public tender.

Councillors also discussed the relocation of the former Willi Street council depot - which currently houses the Warwick Men’s Shed and Rainbow FM - to the Yangan Road depot.

Council officers in their monthly engineering report in an earlier part of the meeting noted that plans have been compiled “for Stanthorpe Library, YMCA and Admin building for proposed library relocation”.

Councillors were also due to debate a proposed multi-purpose community centre in Killarney’s Canning Park, with state government funding.

SHOWCASING OUR SHOW the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society over the past few years, local freelance photographer Storm Lahiff was shocked to hear that the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society did not have an archive of historic images from past shows, so she set about to change that.

The Emerging Photographer of the Year was born, giving emerging photographers exposure in the industry and the opportunity to experience what is like to be a professional photographer working an event with full access.

The Emerging Photographer of the year entrants are mentored throughout

the competition by Storm and walk away having created a strong portfolio of work that features portrait, event, product, sport, animal and lifestyle images.

The competition builds confidence and pushes the emerging photographers out of their comfort zones, problem-solving to overcome challenging lighting and weather conditions to create a series of 20 images that they can be proud of.

The Emerging Photographers were asked to capture the spirit of the Warwick Show and what it means to be at the 2018 show, to capture a slice of history. ●

The big de-merger meeting went well on 29/04/18, with over 1300 in attendance at the Stanthorpe oval. With over 5000 signatures on the petition the committee pushing the de-merger barrow think they have a good chance to sway Annastacia's mob to approve the creation of the new Granite Belt Regional Council.

The petition presented to the Clerk of the Parliament by the Hon. James Lister will get the ball rolling to achieve that goal. However, there is a long way to go yet and many are the pit falls that will be cast in the way by the powers of Brisbane. What they think is set in concrete won't be easy to pry loose.

The Fabian Socialists have plans for more amalgamations, not less. If the PNP were in power chances for a new council would be enhanced, but there are no votes for the LNP in granting the wishes of the Granite Belt; it being a safe LNP seat.

Let us not rest on our laurels, but keep the pressure on Annastacia's mob to achieve a new council, administered by locals for locals.

I read with interest the articles about Prickly Pear Cactus, both by Colin Clegg and Jeremy Sollars in last week's Free Times - the first as a supplementary feed for cattle.

In 1954 I was working on Melmoth Station as a ringer, and offside horse - breaker about 25 miles north of Dingo, Queensland.

Now up there in a paddock that was taken over by the Pear were some of the fattest (Hereford) cattle I have ever seen. Huge dewlaps, and just rolling with fat. These were animals running wild who had made trails, and were only to be seen when they were on the fence line. I asked the boss Colin Donovan about them. He said the Pear was so thick you would be flat out getting a horse to go into it.

Apparently in the past the area Rosendahl was covered with this cactus with trails made so the cattle could reach water. Now in the past 74 days we have had 40 Points of rain.

I always count the fall in points as it sounds better than 10mm. Was shocked when I saw the Leslie Dam water level. With no recent rain predicted!! What will we have if the rainfall for the next 74 days is similar? This is serious. People on the land relying on tanks, and dam are spending a small fortune for re-

FREE TIMES STAFFERS STEP UP After well over a decade managing distribution and administration for the Southern Free Times Lisa Crouch has stepped into a new role.

As of last week Lisa joined Natasha Sheahan as one of our two Advertising Sales Executives after an internal re-structure making her the other "face" of the Free Times when it comes to our many valued advertisers.

Lisa says she is "looking forward to a new challenge" and has spent the last couple of weeks connecting with clients and organising her new weekly schedule.

Lisa - who first joined the Free Times team back in November 2006 - had done a partial sales role in her former position, but the change will allow her to focus full-time on clients.

"It's exciting to take another step and it's all about learning and getting to know the local businesses who advertise with us," Lisa said.

"I think Natasha and I make a good team we work well together, we communicate well and we enjoy bouncing ideas off each other.

"This is a really exciting time for the Free Times - we know our publication is wellread and popular in the community and we have a huge distribution area.

"We really want to build on that ongoing and deliver results for our advertisers."

Free Times editor Jeremy Sollars congratulated Lisa on her new role, saying she is a highly-respected member of the team.

"Lisa already had a good rapport and relationship with a lot of our advertisers through her distribution role - often making weekly visits to drop off copies of the Free Times and so on," he said.

"So it makes sense for her to move into this role - she has the communication skills, the organisational ability and the local knowledge that's so important in a sales position.

With Lisa moving into her sales position, another long-time Free Times staff member finds herself in a new role.

NEWS SALEYARDS FORUM A public forum on the future management of the Warwick Saleyards will not be held before the next scheduled meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee, set down for Thursday 31 May. The council earlier this month committed to holding a public forum but is yet to set a date.

Local livestock producers continue to speculate on a potential plan by the council to lease out the Saleyards to a private operator, understood to be RLX Regional Livestock Exchanges, which operates saleyards in Queensland and New South Wales, including Gracemere, Inverell and Tamworth.

The majority of the minutes of the Saleyards Advisory Committee’s meetings have been kept confidential.

The council has said all along it will be guided by the views of the Saleyards Advisory Committee on the leasing plan and that the Warwick Saleyards are not for sale. ●

CAPITAL’S EMBLEM A STUNNING SCULPTURE As many of you would realise I am only a relatively recent Queenslander by adoption and not a fan of big cities, so consequently had not been to the centre of Brisbane until recently. I needed to accompany a friend to an appointment and we took the train in from Ipswich. Near Roma street station in a park I found a great sculpture of a single Poinsettia bloom - what a spectacular sight and how appropriate for a park.

It is called Poinsettia Riverfire and is 10.5 metres high and apparently has integrated lighting so would look wonderful at night. It was designed by Luke Roberts, who took his inspiration from the adjacent Roma Street gardens and celebrates the annual Riverfire Festival and other fireworks displays held on the river throughout the year.

I've discovered also that the poinsettia is the floral emblem of Brisbane and was adopted as such in 1930 after a public ballot that offered a choice of 10 different plants. Only two of the 10 were Australian natives and not necessarily Queensland natives. How horticulture has changed in the intervening years with the huge popularity and availability of natives now.

The 10 plants proposed by the Queensland Horticultural Society at this time were: bauhinia, bougainvillea, callistemon, gerbera, hibiscus, jacaranda, lagerstroemia, poinciana,

Brisbane's impressive 'Poinsettia Riverfire'. poinsettia, and sterculia acerifolia (flame tree).

The selection criteria suggested to the public were published in the newspaper as follows: · It should be easily propagated and therefore cheap. · It should lend itself to illustration and reproduction. · It should be small enough to be easily grown in a small allotment. · It should be striking and arresting. Showy. · It should be hardy and able to withstand the vagaries of the weather and climate. · It would be an advantage if it was stock

repellent. · It would be an advantage if it was a thornless plant. · It is of much importance to select a plant that excels itself here. · A plant that flowers during the tourist season might receive extra consideration.

The ballot was close, with the poinsettia receiving 1294 votes and the bougainvillea 1275. It was adopted as the floral emblem at a ceremony at the recently-opened Brisbane City Hall on 16th June 1930.

The sculpture that inspired my research was unveiled in May 2016.

As a flower seen in Brisbane streets and gardens that I've noticed, I'd have to say the poinsettia has been eclipsed by both the bougainvillea and the poinciana, so maybe it's time it was planted en masse in public parks and gardens to revive its popularity.

While this is not particularly applicable to our town I like trivia, and if you have a spot protected from frost they will grow in Warwick and are very showy. I've been seeing them for sale in nurseries lately and this is a more appropriate time for them to be in flower than at Christmas but still a bit early to be flowering without intervention and manipulation as they require more hours of cold and darkness than we have at the moment.

Another point I find interesting is that the poinsettia flower is in reality a very insignificant and unassuming creamy white blossom that does not attract pollinators. The beautiful red 'flower' that we associate with the shrub is, in fact, the leaves that surround the blossoms. In recent times these have been manipulated and now can be obtained in a range of colours from cream through pink to the original bright red.

Certainly our city flower, the rose, is to be seen in many private gardens and the council has over 2000 planted in the parks and town gardens. Warwick adopted the rose as its emblem in 1964 after the idea had first been proposed by the Warwick Horticultural Society in 1961. The 'City of Warwick' rose was created in 1991 after an approach to Swane's Nurseries.

It was, however, created by Bear Creek Nurseries in the US and funded by our council.

It is a high-centred red bloom on long strong stems and apparently has become very popular around the world.

A BLIGHT ON OUR FARMING LANDSCAPE As community anger over a proposed solar farm at Sladevale just north of Warwick grows, residents have generated this photomontage of what it would look like.

The solar project is being put forward by renewable energy firm Terrain Solar and is expected to be considered - for either approval or refusal - by Southern Downs councillors at a special meeting, most likely

in June. Residents of Sladevale and nearby Mount Tabor were furious when they found out in March that the Terrain Solar application - which covers more than 150 hectares of the fertile 'Campbells Plains' valley would be 'code assessable', meaning it would be decided by the council's planning officers.

But Mayor Tracy Dobie gave an

assurance at a public meeting held at the Warwick Town Hall on the evening of Monday 14 May that the final decision would be made by herself and the councillors, with many questioning the lack of supporting evidence provided by Terrain Solar about impacts on the visual amenity of the Sladevale area, the loss of prime agricultural land, stormwater runoff and

property devaluation.

An inquiry in to the activities at leading trainer Ben Currie's Toowoomba stable on the morning of the Weetwood Handicap has resulted in the immediate suspension of Mark Currie's trainers licence. A stablehand from the Ben Currie's stable has been handed an 18 month ban while another received three months for giving false evidence at the inquiry.

The integrity unit in this case has acted swiftly and has been at pains to point out the

inquiry is ongoing.

Neither investigation highlights racing at its finest hour but the authorities are willing and able to take firm action. These matters are investigated fully and dealt with and if sanctions are required they are metered out swiftly unlike many other sports where matters are allowed to sully reputations and carry on throughout indefinitely. Racing fans will be watching the outcome of the ongoing Queensland investigation with interest.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED; TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED Followers of the NRL and anyone in a tipping competition has by now become accustomed to the unexpected. In fact the upset has become the norm. In the tipping competition I am part of I am sure anyone who scores a perfect round will be considered to have the "second sight".

Along with the upset results the refereeing debacles continue to dominate the discussion and the fall out after round 11 is still reverberating around the game.

Love or hate Wayne Bennett he is not one to openly bag administrators and referees but the Dylan Napa tackle and resulting Korbin Sims broken jaw has him fired up and he has spoken out forcefully about Napa not having to front the judiciary.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg seems to be having a bob or two each way. He is agreeing with Bennett's view but defends the match review committees' right not to cite Napa applauding the independence of the committee. Sorry Todd we're not on the same page.

While those charged with overseeing many sports often appear reluctant to take affirmative action when there is a problem or a perceived problem horse racing is one game where that has never been an issue despite the bad wrap the sport of Kings often gets.

The Racing Integrity units around the country have been working overtime recently.

In Victoria we have seen lifetime bans handed down to trainer Robert Smerdon for the "systematic doping" of more than 100 race horses. He could also be facing hefty fines.

Eight other licensed or registered personnel involved in Smerdon's Aquantia stable have also been found guilty of 271 charges relating to illegal raceday treatment.

Stablehands Greg and Denise Nelligan received lifetime bans for their involvement.

Trainer Stuart Webb has been disqualified for four years while fellow trainer Tony Vasil is disqualified for three years. Trainer and acting Aquanita foreman Trent Pennuot copped a two year ban. Stable driver Daniel Garland and visiting trainer Liam Birchley have also been disqualified for one year each.

The lengthy inquiry apparently left no stone unturned in an effort to get to the bottom of the so called "top ups" and "milkshakes" given to horses on raceday.

It is an inquiry that rocked Victorian and Australian racing but now there is an equally disturbing inquiry in our own back

At the other end of the spectrum Melbourne Storm player Curtis Scott was sent off following the Storm - Sea Eagles old fashioned punch up. He finds himself warming a sideline seat for his sins. Seems a punch up is not a good look for the game (and it's not) but breaking a players jaw is acceptable. (Not so sure). There was one more thing which I thought was pretty distasteful and that was the apparent excitement from the Roosters players who celebrated the hit after the incident with little care and concern for the injured player. A very bad look - perhaps they should review the tape of the previous week at Suncorp where Cameron Smith helped an injured Titans players from the field.

Obviously a very different team culture.

So to this week's circus Round 12. The Broncos redeemed themselves with a last gasp win over the Roosters. Jimmy the Jet must be working for an Origin spot - he was electric in the second half. Hopefully the side has found some of its mojo. Brisbane and the Eels open proceedings at Suncorp and although the Eels can be a bogey side for Brisbane I'll stick with the home side.

The Sea Eagles didn't appear to win the fight but they certainly won the battle at AAMI last weekend coming away with a significant win over Melbourne who are showing some vulnerability. It's off to the cold country for the Sea Eagles who play Canberra at home on Friday night. The Raiders looked to have their opportunities against the Dragons but again couldn't find a way to win. At home in the expected conditions on Friday night I am prepared to give Canberra another chance.

The Storm head to Cowboy's country for the remaining Friday night game. They were pretty ordinary against Manly and are facing a Cowboys side who watched the season slipping away from them. Sunk by a penalty goal after the full time siren in their game against the Bunnies. You expect Melbourne will come out firing here but the Cowboys must surely be owed a win.

Roosters fans are crying foul after their loss to the Broncos and this week take on the Titans who claimed the scalp of the Knights last round. Winning form is always good form but it's the tri colours here for me.

The Bunnies played their get out of jail free card last week with an after the bell penalty conversion in an insane finish to a great game of footy in Townsville. This week they travel across the ditch to take on the ever unpredictable Warriors. The Bunnies have been on the hop but call me crazy I am sticking with the Warriors.

Saturday night's clash at Penrith between the competition leaders should be a beauty.

Nathan Cleary looked like he hadn't missed a game in his return from injury last week and I am leaning towards the Panthers in what looks on paper to be a very close thing.

The Knights squandered some chances against the Dragons last weekend and have another tough ask this week when they host the Sharks. Cronulla have not been playing pretty football but are racking up the wins.

I'm going for an upset here and tipping the Knights. Young maroons hopeful Kayln Ponga will be pressing for Origin selection and the Sharks Valentine Holmes will be looking to cement a start in Origin 1.

Expect some exciting plays.

The Tigers and Bulldogs wrap up the round at ANZ stadium. The Doggies are finding it difficult to find back to back wins.

They were in the game against the Sharks but couldn't finish the job. Josh Morris injured his knee last week and while not as bad as first thought he will possibly miss this game. He will be a key out.

The Tigers were just not allowed to play well against the Panthers but might redeem themselves with a win here.

CHAMPIONSHIP RACE HEATS UP Stanthorpe Golfers wrapped up a busy weekend of golf as the men completed rounds two and three of the Club championships on Saturday and Sunday.

The Ladies played round two of their Championships on Saturday and round three will be decided on Wednesday this week.

The large field played a Single Stroke event on Saturday (round two of the Club Championships) Local golfer Peter Hines sponsored play and honours went to Mike McAuliffe who claimed the men's competition on a count back with nett score of 66. Steve Kay who also carded nett 66 was the runner up after a count back.

Rundowns went to Bill Pyne, Mark Hendry, Keith Jones and Paul Mills.

The ladies also played the second round of their club championships. After a count back Trish Fittock took a narrow win over runner up Rachel Hendry with the pair both finishing the round with a score of nett 71. Rundowns this week went to Lynette Ludlow and Neta Thouard.

In the men's competition pins shots went to Ian Harvey (3rd), Mike McAuliffe (12th) and Tom Fittock (17th). The 1/10 Pro Pin went to Bill Pyne, 5/14 - Darryl Boekholt and 9/18- Scott Constable.

Nikki Waterworth won the 17th approach for the ladies.

This week the birdies nest was at the 11th. David Reeves, Michael O'Brien and Scott Constable took the honours.

On Sunday the men were back in action for round three of the Championships.

Reno Piovesan taking the win with a nett score of 70. Runner up on a count back was Mike McAuliffe. Rundowns on the day went to Peter Gibney, Matthew Waterworth and Lyle Bryant. The 3rd and 12th pin shots were taken out by Mike McAuliffe and Trevor Ludlow claimed the 17th. 1/10th Pro Pin went the way of David Reeves, 5/14 Rick Chapman and 9/18 to Dave Burgess.

Saturday is the final round of the Club Championships for both men and ladies. And at this point it is difficult to find a favourite in any of the Grades Saturday will be a telling round and it will be sponsored by Alan Kerr and Dale Minchenton.

The Stanthorpe Golf Club will be holding their AGM on Tuesday 29th May at 7.00pm at the clubhouse and would like to see as many members as possible attend.

ARMSTONG GRABS SPORTERS WIN In perfect but slightly chilly conditions last Sunday Paul Armstrong had an excellent round of golf to post a win in the Sporters competition. Armstrong also had the Best Gross of the round to top off a good morning. Filling the runners up spot was Marg Locke who also played well. The Run-downs went to Mark Lynam and Tony Steele. Lynam also left with a meat tray.

Norm Steele took the Pin Shot on the third and the Pro Pin went to Nikki Waterworth.

TANNY TRICKS There has been plenty going on at the Tanny Bowls Club in the past few weeks.

The Tannymorel Open Pairs competition kicked off with a round robin format and proved popular with a big field taking to the greens.

There were some big scores in the opening games. These are the results to date. Gazz Farmer and Philpsy had a big win over Dan Sully and Tuck - final score 21-3. In another one-sided affair Lorna and Grumpy defeated Joel and Meg Farmer 213. Gordie and Sue took on Marg T and Mick O and scored an 18-6 win.

In a closer game Di and Pete defeated Shep and Aaron 14-10. Thommo and Walshy also had a comfortable win over Myrtle and Don - thee final score 22-11.

The call-up for this Saturday 26/5 - Skips only is as follows. Sue vs Don; Walshy vs Tuck; Philpsy vs Marg Farmer; Grumpy vs Pete and Aaron vs Mick. Good luck everyone.

The club's Monthly Triples competition sponsored by Roz Thompson was held last Thursday (17/5) - another great day It was a win for the visiting Warwick boys, Trev Wright Welshy and Tyler. The runners up were local lads Gazz Farmer Mick O and Shep. Picking up the horses butt award were Don, Sue and Grumpy flying the Tanny Flag.

In the first round Don Clouten Sue and Grumpy snatched a one point win over Marg T Nick O and Dan Sully - scores 11-10. Eventual winners Trev Wright, Ed Welsh and Steve Tyler played well to defeat Brian Brown, Rob Parker and Tony Schubert 17-9.

Mac Balfour Bev and Dough Christensen had a 12-7 win over their opponents Gordie, Walshy and Greg Dent. L Hortley, Bev Cross and Greg Cross proved too strong for the local trio Prickles, Paint Brush and Johno Johnson - the score 16-6. Phil Wagner had a more comfortable17-6 win over their opponents Adrian L'Barrow and Julie and Al. In the all-important "skips only" round Doug Christensen defeated Philpsy by just one point (12-11). Johno Johnson had a 19-11 win over Al Buse. Shep had a blinder defeating Grumpy 25-2 and Tony Schubert had a 13-9 win over Phil Wagner.

Greg Dent played well to defeat Dan Sully 18-11 and S TYLER defeated Greg Cross by a big margin - finals core 20-3.

ASSOCIATION GAMES TIGHT Nine players were on court for the Association Croquet games last week.

Andrea Denkewitz partnered Peter Tunbridge in a close game Joy Newman and Effey Russell. This game finished in a 20 all tie.

Carol Verwey and Pat Schnoor played Heather Widderick and had a 26-16 win.

Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick both had one break of two.

The final singles game between Jenny Tunbridge and Grace Howard was a very close affair with Jenny managing to sneak home with a 23-22 win.

Ricochet

There was only a small but enthusiastic group of players on the court for the Ricochet Croquet games on Thursday morning. Andrea Denkewitz and Bron Southgate played Carol Verwey. Verwey had two breaks of two and went on to win the game with 21 hoops to 18.

In the game between Peter Tunbridge and John Draper, Draper scored a break of three hoops and went on to win the game 26-24.

GATEBALL FRIDAY The Gateball crew took to the court on Friday morning.

Forming Team One were John Draper, Heather Widderick, Joy Newman and Andrea Denkewitz. Their opponents, Tam Two were Pat Schnoor, Margaret Dickenson, Jenny Tunbridge and Grace Howard.

Team Two were on fire in the opening game of the morning scoring a 15-8 win.

Margaret Dickenson showed her skill to score and Agari while Grace Howard and Joy Newman both produced great 'sliders' for their teams.

In the second game of the morning Team One hit back after a slow start to score a 12-9 win.

After the break the action was all in Team Two's favour winning the third game 14-10 and the final game 18-10. In game three they had a 'gate and touch ' securing extra shots for the team.

Pat Schnoor, Jenny Tunbridge and Margaret Dickenson were in excellent form making plenty of very accurate shots during the games.

TATICAL GAMES The opening games at Golf Croquet took a little longer than normal last week as all players took a measured approach to the game and carefully considered tactics. The first group played doubles there was little between the two groups. Kath Hopgood and Bev Sullivan finally got the better of their opponents Pauline Inglis and Elaine Brown scoring a hard fought 13-11 win.

The second group played triples and it was Marian Castles, Bronny Southgate, and Justin Liddy who took a 13-10 win over Liz Ellway, Shirley Page and Judy Lock 10.

After a longer than normal break between games the second round of games were very short. The normal number of hoops played in a first to 13 games, is around 25 or 26, and for a first to seven games are usually around 12 or 13 however only seven hoops were able to be completed in the second game. The triples team of Justin Liddy, Bronny and Liz Ellway were narrowly defeated by Bev Sullivan, Shirley Page and Pauline Inglis. The final score 4-3.

The doubles group were a little distracted by the hold ups which often occur when following a larger group however Kath Hopgood and Marian Castles held their concentration and went on to a 5-2 win over Elaine Brown and Judy Lock .

Kath Hopgood looked to be the player of the day. Wither her well-directed shots she put together a great combined two game score of 10. An excellent effort considering the shortened second game.

NATIONAL MOTORSPORT RETURNS National-level motorsport competition returns Morgan Park in June, with Round Three of the Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) to be held from Friday 8 to Sunday 10. The AMRS encompasses a range of national motorsport categories including the GT-1 Australia Series (for exotic sports cars), Australian Formula Three Premier Series, Legend Cars and the Mazda RX8 Cup Series.

National Motorsport is set to make a return to Morgan Park on June 8-10.

Park by three Queensland state categories: Formula Vee, Production Sports and Classic Sports Sedans Action commences on Friday June 10 with Practice round and qualifying and racing commencing on Saturday and continuing Sunday.

BRACKIN STEPS UP FOR NEXT CHALLENGE Emerging Super Lightweight boxer Chris Brackin who grew up in Stanthorpe and is now based in Toowoomba is preparing for his return to the ring on Saturday when he heads a trio of boxers from Smithy's gym in Toowoomba who will travel be in action this weekend.

Brackin who did his early boxing on the Southern Downs will take on well-respected Nambucca Heads boxer Dan Beverly in a tournament at Seagulls Club, Tweed Heads on Saturday May 26.

The 19 year old is shaping as a hot prospect will be looking to extend his undefeated pro wins to four when he takes on Beverley.

Brackin had two early round wins in his first two bouts but was taken the distance in his third bout by Kurt Finlayson inarch and survived a split division to keep his winning record intact.

Brackin's opponent in the Tweed Heads bout is well-known to followers of boxing in the region having fought both Steve Spark and Australian champion Brent Rice in Toowoomba. He is well known for his trade mark walk-up style.

Speaking recently Brackin said "Kurt Finlayson is a world champion kick-boxer and he was a good stepping stone for me. It was a really tough fight and I learnt a lot from it."

Brackin admitted each fight is tougher and expects this bout to be his biggest challenge since leaving the amateur ranks. Brackin is excited to be exploring new opportunities and is thrilled that the upcoming bout will be on Fox Sport saying it is a great opportunity to get his name out there. "I'm just hoping to put on a good show for everyone."

Speaking with Brackin's father Brian recently he said Chris has been training

hard and has set himself some serious goals in the sport. No doubt there will be plenty of locals interested in his upcoming fight.

PENTATH SUCCESS Five races, two day - a total of 42.2 kms - the annual Warwick Pentath Run. Hundreds of runners flocked to Warwick last weekend for the event. Pounding the pavements some competed in all the events others in just some or one but the overall consensus was the 2018 Pentath was a spectacular success. Runners have the option to compete in all or some of the five events which add up to a marathon as amateurs and professionals compete side by side. Competitors, some who travelled from the interstate and even the UK ranged in age from three to 80.

The unique Pentath started on Saturday morning with a 1/2 marathon which began at WIRAC and finished at Yangan. After breakfast at the Yangan pub competitors were bussed back to Warwick.

Following a well-earned break, runners took on the 4.6klm Cross Country run at Leslie Dam. A five klm out and back road race on Sandy Creek Road wrapped up Saturday's racing and finished at the historic Sandy Creek Pub. Competitors were up early on Sunday morning for the 10klm Hill climb from Killarney to Queen Mary Falls. For those still standing there was breakfast after the race in the Cafe Grounds at Queen Mary Falls.

The racing concluded with a spectacular 1500m sprint through the main street of Warwick which was won by Aiden Hobbs.

Now in its 16th year the event was once again an enormous success with 2500 runners involved.

The record turnout of runners required a similar record turnout of volunteers and their contribution made the event a success with plenty of plaudits coming the way of the organisers.

Of the large number of runners competed in all five events it was Iasias Beyn who finished with the best cumulative

time of 02:20:47. Aiden Hobbs finished in second place with a time of 02.22:58 followed by Peter Bracken 2.28:30.

This is a truly unique event with something for everyone - congratulations to everyone involved.

SHINING PERFORMANCE FROM STANTHORPE Stanthorpe continue their climb up the ladder in the second division Clive Berghofer TRL competition and their dominant win over Oakey last weekend at Sullivan Oval puts them on eight points after six games played. Gatton and Dalby head the standings with 10 points each but have played seven games. Pittsworth who have also played only six games are one point ahead of Stanthorpe.

It good to see the large crowd of supporters at Sullivan Oval on Saturday afternoon getting behind the local boys many of the crowd staying on after a very big day of junior league.

Stanthorpe look to have a good balance of youth and more experienced players and it showed against the Bears on Saturday The day was soured somewhat by a sickening injury to Brad Britton who was in immediate trouble after a tackle and was taken from the field. The talented youngster suffered a broken arm.

Oakey opening scoring with a try just minutes into the game. Stanthorpe hit back with tries to Nathan Brannigan, Hamish Cole and Regan Sullivan.

Although the home side led 14-6 at half time the game was very much still in the balance.

After the half time break Stanthorpe dominated play. Two quick tries from front rower Michael Solomon all but put the game out of the visitors reach with a 26-6 score line.

Oakey managed to score again when Tomuri-Marshall crossed but Stanthorpe despite coughing up possession and giving up some silly penalties never looked in danger.

Hamish Cole had an excellent game and it was no surprise he was named Players Play after the game.

Brad Brittan is certainly going to be missed over the coming weeks. His injury will force coach Gary Skimmings to reshuffle his side as he prepares them for their Friday night game against the Warwick Cowboys at Sullivan Oval. Fortunately the Gremlins have good numbers available - on Saturday there were 24 players available for the game.

Stanthorpe''s hooker scoots over to score an early try in Saturday''s game against Oakey Bears. to be a tough game is set down for 7.30pm.

FORT PLATZ Wattles are building a formidable reputation at Platz Oval which is becoming an impenetrable fortress for visiting TRL sides; last weekend claiming another scalp with Oakey going down 42-18 to the home side.

Oakey were well in the game in the first half - they posted first points and were within striking distance at the half time break trailing 18-10.

However it was one way traffic in the second half as Wattles dominated scoring three unanswered tries to extend the lead to 26 points.

Andrew Richardson scored a double for Wattles while team mates Ty Gardner, Mitch Koina, Nick Van Der Poel, Will O'Grady, and Dylan Wilson all got across the try line in a superb team performance.

Matt Duggan returned to the kicking duties this week nailing seven from seven.

Josh Stanton crossed twice for the Bears in second half but the result was beyond doubt.

Wattles are now five from five at Platz oval and this week prepare for a tough local derby when they host the Cowboys who will be fresh from last weekend's bye.

Wattles are looking to cement their place at the top of the table with Valleys while the Cowboys will be looking for an opportunity to improve on their fifth place. Sure to be an exciting game.

The main game is set down for a 2.30pm kick off on Saturday and the Reserve Grade and Under 18's will be in action prior to the main game action.

In other games Wattles had a 60-nil win in Reserve Grade and a 34-24 win in the Under 18's gave them a club clean sweep for the round.
