Laura Gorton, of Pakenham, is among nearly 2,000 trekkers gearing up for the fourth annual Wild Women On Top Melbourne Coastrek, which raises vital funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation's work to restore sight for some of the world's poorest people. Melbourne Coastrek, on Friday May 25, stretches along the picturesque Mornington Peninsula for 30 kilometres from Koonya Beach, or for 60 kilometres from Cape Schanck, to the finish line at Point Nepean. Trekkers walk in teams of four, including at least two women, and must raise at least $2,000 per team. Laura and her team, The Unstoppable Trekstars, are not only training for the 30km trek, they're also raising funds towards the event's overall goal of $1.8 million for The Fred Hollows Foundation. "Coastrek is a physical, mental and emotional challenge that has pushed us individually and as a group," Laura said. "It's also been truly rewarding. So rewarding in fact that after raising over $8500 in 2017 we couldn't help but go back for more. So this year we are trekking again! "As a team we have already raise nearly $3000 towards this year's total and we are super keen to see where we can take that figure before our fundraising page closes." Laura is the only member of the Unstoppable Trekstars who isn't from Sale, but it hasn't stopped the fitness lover from training. "Due to location we found we had to train individually or in pairs but never were lucky enough to all train together - as hard as we tried to organise it! "We have a strong support network for each other and are constantly motivating and inspiring each other to get out there and do the training. "To be able to participate in the trek, each team member is required to raise a minimum of $500 each. This seemed so daunting last year, but we were totally blown away and over-

New bail laws bite By Cam Lucadou-Wells A string of bail applications fell by the wayside as stricter bail laws came into effect at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 May. Jeanelle Pene, 39, of Cranbourne East, scrapped her bail application after learning she'd have to prove 'exceptional circumstances' to gain her release. The test applied due to Pene being charged with an indictable charge - drug trafficking while being on bail for another indictable offence. "It's changing things quickly, isn't it," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said. 'Exceptional circumstances' was a "very high bar", Mr Vandersteen told another prisoner who abandoned their bail app that day. The applicant had to prove circumstances that were "out of the ordinary" or "unusual", he said. Pene instead opted to plead guilty to a sentence indication of six months' jail. She had already served 27 days in remand
since being arrested at her home on 24 April. She faced up to 23 charges including trafficking meth and several counts of handling stolen goods. Police searched the home after discovering a stolen Navara with NSW plates parked in the driveway, the court heard. Inside the home, they found Pene as well as drugs and other stolen goods including a Subaru car and power tools in the garage, a credit card, a Medicare card, two number plates, two car keys and five lap tops. Pene was found with the drug 'ice'. A small amount of cannabis and two ecstasy tablets were also found in the home, the court heard. Her trafficking charge was made out by her own admissions. She allegedly told police that she was selling drugs to help pay off a $20,000 Centrelink debt. The stolen property had been left at the house by other people, she allegedly said. She also pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing a $10,000 gas-monitoring clam from
a City of Casey landfill in Cranbourne on 28 March. She also pleaded guilty to refusing a drugdriving test and driving an unregistered car with false number plates. Pene faces a further hearing for allegedly breaching a County Court-imposed CCO. When the bail laws passed in June 2017, State Attorney-General Martin Pakula said they were important laws to "make Victoria safer". "We're making it harder than ever to get bail in Victoria, and we're making community safety a higher priority." The 'exceptional circumstances' test applies for alleged serious indictable offences committed on bail, summons, parole, a community correction order or under sentence. The law also introduces a 'compelling reasons' test for bail applicants charged with offences such as rape, armed robbery and persistently breaching a family-violence intervention order.
Funding fears for Aboriginal outreach By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Government has assured that funding will continue at Casey's successful Aboriginal Gathering Place after Casey Council raised fears of massive cuts. The council was set to write to the Government about the looming expiration of $205,000 of funding of four youth programs at the Doveton-based outreach facility from 1 July. The facility's opening hours would have also been cut by about 10 hours a week, "profoundly impacting" on access to the service. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani led an urgent business motion at a council meeting on 15 May for a funding extension. The facility had been hailed as "the perfect model" for Aboriginal community outreach by the Department of Health and Human Services' prinicipal Aboriginal advisor, Cr Crestani noted. "I've seen first-hand the supportive and connected space for our indigenous sisters and brothers. "It is a positive environment." Cr Rex Flannery declared he would be "embarrassed" to meet at Bunjil Place if the programs were cut. The gathering place offers something for scores of visitors of all ages - groups for youths, gardening, women's crafts, playgroup children and primary-school aged children. It serves a substantial indigenous community in Casey and neighbouring Dandenong. Artist 'Uncle' Doug Brown, who attends and helped set-up the centre, said it was a place that people could come and go. "They can have a cup of coffee or tea and talk about their problems with the workers. "You don't have to make an appointment.

The centre was vital to address social isolation, he said. "Before it was set up, we didn't have anything like it around here." The $205,000 funding in question covers the Building Strong Aboriginal Youth regional co-ordinator and program as well as an Aboriginal Health co-ordinator. It threatens the gathering place's beforeschool sports programs with breakfast and school attendance, Dandenong and District Aboriginal Cooperative youth groups, a kids club and health promotions and weekly events. Health Minister Jill Hennessey on 17 May told Star News that "there's no question - the funding for this very important program is secure".
"We are working with Aboriginal community controlled organisations involved to ensure the success of the Aboriginal Gathering Place continues." Casey Council recently increased its funding for youth homework and school holiday programs in 2018-'19. The facility also receives $171,500 in federal funding, which expires in October 2020. Funds for a local justice worker program expire on 30 June 2019. Cr Crestani said funding needed to continue during the transition to the State Government's new 10-year Aboriginal health, wellbeing and safety plan, known as the Korin Korin Balit-Djak plan. She said there had been "positive negotiations" with the Department but "we don't want the programs to be lost between now and when the 10-year-plan comes on board".
Online stalker wants his computer back By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man jailed for "one of the most destructive cases of stalking" including posting photos of his wife online has applied to get back his seized computer and family photos from police. The City of Casey man, who Star News has chosen not to identify, applied to Dandenong Magistrates' Court to halt the destruction of the "tainted" computer. He also applied to retrieve the photos and documents stored on the computer, then for it to be wiped clean and returned. In October, he was jailed for nine months by Dandenong Magistrates' Court; the computer and its contents were ordered for destruction. During the 21 May application, his lawyer argued that he faced "undue hardship" if the computer, his phone and his electronic tablet weren't returned to him. "It's important for him gaining stability in his life." He sought his holiday photos because he'd since suffered "estrangement" from his family, his lawyer told the court. "Funny that!" magistrate Jack Vandersteen said. "It's a consequence of what he did. It's one of the most destructive cases of stalking in terms of the impact on his family." Mr Vandersteen noted one of the offending photos featured a holiday photo of his wife with his daughters cropped out of the image. Another featured his wife and "her cleavage" being identified within a group shot, Mr Vandersteen said. The lawyer said the man required his "personal" documents such as superannuation and taxation files and his resum¨¦. They could be transferred onto a "clean" hard drive supplied by his sister, he submitted. In opposing the application, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Savin said it could be hard to distinguish which files were "tainted". Undisclosed files and photos could also be hidden in "all different areas" of the computer. The phone and tablet were the initial means of proving he had uploaded the offending images, Lead Sen Const Savin said. The computer was used to access offending websites. The applicant's lawyer said he was aware it won't be a fast process, but could specify the required folders 'My Documents' and 'My Videos'. Mr Vandersteen ruled that the man could be supplied copies of the documents only. "It's not appropriate for anything further than that because it's all tainted property, all used in the commission of the offence."

This passion lead her to collaborate with UK runner Mimi Anderson in 2014, together running South Africa's Freedom Trail and raising $55,000 on behalf of Save the Children to support an initiative increasing access to feminine hygiene products and providing education on the importance of attending school for South African girls. Ms Gash says team dynamics and showing an armour of toughness - which she has endured in marathon running - is no different to a running a successful business. "Sometimes we do things that are so out of our comfort zone that they don't actually stick and resonate with who we are. "You don't need everyone that's like you. In fact, it doesn't work if everyone's like you. You need people who have strengths to complement your weaknesses, expertise and insights." Ms Gash referred to her project in India which saw her run 3253km over 77 days as an ambassador for World Vision 18 months ago to explore the barriers to why children were unable to access a quality education across the country. "Every single day we had different sets of challenges and I needed to keep remembering those moments of the team being completely united that helped me with the motivation each time I faced those new challenges," she said. Funding fine By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 2016 Casey Council candidate has been put on a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to failing to disclose election donations within 40 days. Frank Lamattina, a well-known vegetable grower in Clyde, was charged by the Local Government Inspectorate for allegedly failing to submit a return by the 1 December 2016 deadline. Candidates were required to submit returns declaring election gifts or donations totalling more than $500. Appearing at Frankston Magistrates' Court on 16 May, Mr Lamattina was put on a 12-month adjourned undertaking without conviction. Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge ordered Mr Lamattina to pay $2500 into the Court Fund, which is then distributed to local charities. He must also pay the prosecuting Local Government Inspectorate's $1750 legal costs. Another Casey candidate Faisal Najibi pleaded guilty to the same offence in March. He was put on an adjourned undertaking without conviction and ordered to pay $1000 in costs to the Local Government Inspectorate. During the 2016 poll Mr Lamattina polled second in Balla Balla Ward with 1862 first-preference votes. Mayor Geoff Ablett, who was preferenced by Mr Lamattina, won the seat with more than 7000 votes. The offence carries a maximum court imposed fine of $9327.60.

Common threads Graley, who hosted the 5 May launch, said the quilt connected people. "No matter where you are from you'll find something that you connect with in the quilt. "I was thrilled to see the hard work of so many different people come together for a fantastic result." Aljamal earlier told Star News that the dancer centrepiece to the quilt was something of a universal language, linking all of the 30 featured groups. "I wanted something to satisfy everyone. A multicultural quilt that bound together the work of more than 300 people from 30 cultural groups has been launched at Bunjil Place. The four-square metre work featured a sunlit dancer ringed by 31 cultural symbols representing Casey community groups. It was designed to express the 'common thread' of humanity. Fittingly, the quilt was celebrated with performances from dancers and singers from Uruguay, Bosnia, India, Mauritius and Chile. How much longer do we have to put up with this fiasco, our fairly well cared animals, mistreated on a voyage of many weeks to be even worse treated by people who have no respect for women and have even less respect for the animal they buy for their food, by slashing its tendons and putting it in the boot of their car in 40-plus degrees, pehaps for hours, then killing it slowly by slashing its throat and letting it bleed to death. It must be stopped and stopped properly, so that nobody loses out. Firstly, we must take the chequebook off Julie Bishop, we are not paying for her place in UN. Then we use the Foreign Aid money to set up a facility in each state to process surplus animals, foodstufffs and any other item that might be of use to other nations in need. The idea is, the government buys up all Australian produced surpluses, sheep, cattle, horses, goats, buffalo, pigs, camels, kangaroos, crocodiles, chickens, ducks,turkeys and they process them humanely - i.e. NO Halal. This meat is fozen, dried and tinned, then stored. Likewise all our grain, made into flour, cereals, biscuits etc. Our sugar and honey packed, tinned and bottled. Our fruits and vegetables all processed, milk and eggs dried. The list is endless - tents, blankets, sheets, towels, camp beds and some furniture, tools of every type, all Australian made and surplus, bought up by the government, processed and stored, using the money we would give as Foreign Aid which manages to end up in Swiss bank accounts and doesn’t reach where it should. The beauty of this system is, the producers always sell all their produce, Foreign Aid can be sent in containers, directly where it is needed in the right mix and quantities and best of all, our charities could be allowed to draw from these facilities at no charge, a win-win situation for everyone. Carly Feltham-Palmer: What frustrates me is that council happily approve for all these estates to be built in and around the area, with no forethought into 'perhaps' making the developers a little more accountable for community infrastructure. Yet, there is another estate going up on the border of Junction Village (Acacia Botanic), where I would assume there will be more children requiring public education, so they'll go to either Cranbourne South or Devon Meadows Primary School, additional funding will not likely be provided other than the usual money coming into the school. It's worth noting both were once small country schools. Jude Perera is a joke; I've raised the issue with him repeatedly about changing the school speed zone in Devon Meadows to the 40 or 50 and to no avail (currently 80, into 60) at the school border. In the end it was a mum who approached council after reading some clause, and this will now be changed. He'll take all the accolades he can, in the hope this helps with his successor with re-election, even though he had nothing to do with it. In what was previously a Labor dominant area, the area is changing and changing rapidly due to the constituents having enough of ineffective local government. End rant lol. Last drinks for drug-driver By Cam Lucadou-Wells A serial drug-driver has had his sentencing deferred due to drinking during a court’s lunch break. Bryce Christopher Lovatt, 29, had pleaded guilty to multiple drug-driving and driving without an interlock offences within two months at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 14 May. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Lovatt he would be likely to be jailed that day before standing down the case until that afternoon. On Lovatt’s return after lunch, the court heard that he reportedly told Corrections Victoria staff he’d had “a couple of drinks” in the lunch interval.

Choke-victim tries to escape moving car, court hears By Cam Lucadou-Wells A woman has tried to jump out of a moving car in Narre Warren North to escape an allegedly violent ex-partner, a court bail hearing has heard on 21 May. The accused Endeavour Hills man, 27, had allegedly twice choked the victim - at her home in February and during a heated drive in the South East suburbs on the night of 19-20 May. According to police, she had remained in Dandenong Hospital for the past two days with swelling around her neck. She also suffered a lump on her head, grazes on her back and pain to her elbow, the court heard. She was in fear for her life, Det Sen Const Smith said. In the latter case, he aggressively rebuked
her for several hours for going to police with family violence allegations in February, the woman claimed. Police informant Detective Senior Constable Michael Smith told the court that at one point as he drove her in his mother's car, she asked to be taken back to her vehicle. He started driving erratically in the opposite direction, telling her he knew of a lookout that no one knows about, Det Sen Const Smith said. While on Belgrave-Hallam Road, she tried to jump out of the car at 80km/h, she told police. The man allegedly held her in by her jumper. Further along, she tried again at about 60km/h, she claimed. Singers are hitting their notes at the annual Star Search for a Cause auditions. Organiser Naomi Horsley said it not only gave up to 100 singers a chance to strut their stuff on stage but all entry fees were donated to the Cancer Council to support people with cancer. This may be the big chance for those confining their talents to singing in the shower or around the house, Ms Horsley said. Singers compete against their own age-level in the junior, intermediate, senior or over-21 categories. "It's amazing the talent that you see in the junior section - the big voices in these little people. "We also want the older age groups out there as well. Just because you're 25 years or older doesn't mean you shouldn't go out and have fun with it. "This is a chance to perform, to gain experience ... You never know who is watching." Last year, the all-ages competition raised $5000 - which was donated to brain cancer research at Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. Brain cancer has a lower profile and lower survival rates than more common forms of cancer. It also receives less funding for support and research services. Recently, organisers donated $1000 of XBox and PS4 console games for patients at Monash Children's Hospital. "We want those funds to go to research as well as people going through a cancer journey," Ms Horsley said. "What better way to help children sitting in a hospital all day. Walk for learning Walkers stepped out in support for education in Timor Leste during a fundraiser at Wilson Botanic Park on 20 May. The Walk for Timor raised more than $1000 for learning materials at two English language study centres in the municipality of Ermera. The centres are key to young people learning English and opening up a range of study and career options, spokeswoman Jan Trezise said. The walk was organised by Casey-based group Friends of Ermera and Year 9 students from Gleneagles Secondary College. It was followed by nourishing homemade soup, fresh fruit and cakes.

The City of Casey event promoted responsible pet ownership with a splash of fun - wildlife demos, pet photo-booths and the entertaining Flipping Disc Dogz. Mayor Geoff Ablett said Casey had 37,000 registered cats and dogs - one of the highest pet-registration rates in Melbourne. Narre Warren-based Clinton Brown, 30, is making his mark as one of VICSES's most youthful unit controllers. He is one of the faces of this year's Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day campaign - a national day of thanks for SES volunteers on 23 May. Beside his full-time job, Mr Brown volunteers his time to run Casey's only SES unit. Its 50 members are on hand to respond to more than 640 callouts a year. However, 2018 has proven unusually busy, with more than 400 calls for help in the first five months. The calls can come any time, Mr Brown says. Often volunteers are roused out of their beds to attend a leaking roof, flooding home or a fallen tree. They are often braving the worst of wet and windy weather. Mr Brown's duties are many, but he enjoys it. He keeps the unit financially compliant and sound, ensures the members are trained and the equipment is up-to-date. When he started with the unit in 2009, he was just eager to meet a new challenge and new people. "It's the friendships and the people - you respect the people who are prepared to get out of bed in the pouring rain to help somebody. "It's about giving back and helping people in their time of need." With Casey's second unit set to roll-out in Cranbourne, the SES eagerly seeks new members. They gain accredited training and expertise in general rescue and emergency operations. Students at the top By Cam Lucadou-Wells Twenty remarkable students at Federation University have been presented with scholarships at a ceremony in Berwick on 5 May. The scholarships included elite athlete, industry placement, Year 12 and economic hardship categories. Tylah Meunier, a particularly driven Victorian Institute of Sport cyclist living in Pakenham, was among the recipients. He is devoting himself to up to seven days a week of training, including at the institute at Albert Park as well as the hills behind Pakenham. The wildlife veterinarian science student is driven to go that bit faster with every training session. In the past year, he has put on more than 10 kilograms of muscle. You have to be a "big, strong unit" for track cycling, he says. Somehow in his busy schedule, he is studying as well as working two jobs. "If I did sport all day I'd be sick of it. It's good to be mentally challenging myself. "You've just got love what you're doing.". Ebony-Rose Nudelman, of Hastings, also received a scholarship as she starts her youthwork diploma. She is inspired to help others following the noble example of her mother, who singlehandedly worked several jobs, raised three kids and volunteers at the local community house. "She always made sure she was there for us. "She never gave up."

Call for student phones unheeded It was a debate that perhaps many students have a vested interest - should mobile phones be banned in schools? As part of Law Week, Narre Warren South P-12 College Year 10 legal studies students debated the pros and cons of the contentious rule. There were good arguments on both sides. Phones can assist in an emergency if a teacher isn't close at hand. They can be used to call on their parents to drop off forgotten homework, and to generally enhance learning. But those against claimed they were a distraction, a target for thieves and an added cyber-bullying risk. The latter arguments won the day with adjudicators Gino Andrieri, a principal at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers in Dandenong, and Sandy Kaur of Springvale Monash Legal Service. For the record, the school deems that mobile phones should not be seen in class - especially at junior high-school levels. But as with any rule, there is an exception. Sometimes a teacher would direct students to check facts on their phones when it's more convenient, teacher and Year 9-10 supervisor Dianne Parkinson said.

A man has been remanded in custody after a magistrate held off sentencing due to the man's "distracted", "annoyed" and "disinterested" attitude. The 30-year-old had pleaded guilty to breaches of two corrections orders and an intervention order as well as driving on ice, shoplifting and disqualified driving at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 23 May. The court heard of an incident in January in which he'd tried to force his way into the expartner's Cranbourne home. The man removed his clothes and rolled around on the grass outside, before pulling a sliding door off its hinges to get inside. While hiding in a wardrobe, the victim yelled that police were on their way. The man fled in his car and was served with an intervention order. He breached that order twice, including banging on her house for 20 minutes and demanding her to "open the f***ing door" on 20 March. After sleeping in the front yard for a while, he returned to the door. "Tell your mother to take the GPS off me. I know she's tracking me," he allegedly said. A garden deck chair and front security door were damaged during the incident, the court heard. Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell told the court that the man had not been in trouble with the law until September last year but had a history of poly-substance abuse since his late teens. He was using meth daily at the time of the incidents, Ms Strugnell said. He had been in pre-sentence remand for the past 62 days. During sentencing, magistrate Jack Vandersteen had indicated that the man faced 120 days of jail time followed by a corrections order. He then pulled up, observing the man "seems a bit disinterested" as well as "distracted" and "annoyed" while in the dock. "That's why he's breaching these orders," Mr Vandersteen said, noting a pattern of drugdriving, disqualified-driving and breaches of court orders. "He's a non-compliant individual." The accused said: "Can I ask a question?" Mr Vandersteen refused the request, remanding the man for sentencing via video link on 6 June.

MILESTONE FOR PARKLEA FOUNDER IN 1968 a young Andrew Facey started what would become a long and successful career in real estate. The grandson of Frank Facey, founder of Frank Facey Real Estate, Andrew rose from salesman to director and partner of the firm, taking the reigns from his father Angus in the 1970s. “When he started to let Andrew and I run the business we weren’t very old; in 1975 I was 30 and Andrew was younger than I,” said former Frank Facey Real Estate Director and longtime friend of Andrew’s, Brendan Rice. “Andrew was a gun salesman. She delivered a speech on behalf of the community, explaining that she moved to Melbourne from India as a five-year-old and now worked as a quality assurance assistant at Cobs Popcorn in Dandenong South. South-East Melbourne (SEM) chair Simon McKeon said the diverse region was home to more than 1.2 million residents, “many of whom have come here from across the globe to make their home, raise families and create jobs as well as seek and create opportunities”. “This was a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity and achievements of the south east Melbourne community,” he said.

Accused burglar feeds on the spoils By Cam Lucadou-Wells A youth has been refused bail after being charged with an aggravated burglary with three other juveniles in Narre Warren on 18 May. At a childrens court hearing on 21 May, the teen male denied he played a part in the home break-in at Franleigh Drive at 3.10am. The accused youth had been captured on CCTV trying a car’s door handle in the home’s driveway just before two youths entered the house, police told the court.
Twenty minutes later, the four alleged cooffenders used a credit card stolen from the burglary to buy $37 of food and drinks for at a nearby McDonald’s, the court heard. They were arrested and interviewed by police the next day. At the time, the teen was breaching a night curfew as part of his supervised bail conditions. Youth Justice did not support the latest bail application because the boy was allegedly offending just a week after being put on supervised bail, the court heard.
He was living with his mother, was being supported by a youth crime prevention worker and set to start a TAFE course. He’d also been referred to headspace youth mental health service. The teen had been reportedly engaging well with a youth crime prevention worker. It was too early for the program to have an effect, the court was told. The magistrate said “it was almost a joke” that the teen breached his bail curfew “straightaway”. He was already on a deferred sentence for
past offending, with the alleged agg burg a further escalation, the judge said. “I warned you and warned you and warned you. “You were before the court a few weeks ago and we spoke about a curfew. I told you how important it was for you to be at home. “If you were at home, none of this would have happened.” The teen was remanded in custody to appear at a later date.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. A statement’s been made By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - AFL VICTORIA COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS On a day of so much significance and hype, the only thing the packed crowd wanted to see at Holm Park was a fair, tough and entertaining game of footy. It was not only that, but it was more. The Yarra Ranges certainly left no stone unturned, they bashed and crashed the packs, dared to take the game on and never gave up until the final siren blared. But the South East just did it that bit better. Regardless of the outcome of the proposed merger in 2019 between the two leagues, football in the region is in good shape. There was just one change to the SEFNL’s side on game day, with athletic ruckman Gach Nyuon pulling out of the game, replaced by the versatile Troy Tharle. It was a hot start, with the ball flinging from one end to another. The starting midfield of Madi Andrews, Brad Scalzo and Michael Collins - three names that can frighten even the most seasoned local footballers - got the SEFNL off to a bright start by winning the ball from the middle, and on the outside Luke Bee-Hugo started brightly with his driving run. After locking the ball inside fifty for five minutes, Berwick star Ash Smith got the crowd roaring with the opening goal, courtesy of a horror turnover out of defence. Moments later, Tim Gunn curled the ball around expertly in the first of his four majors, but the Yarra Ranges were getting their chances, but were unable to convert in front of goal, something that crept into their game and eventually became their undoing. The tide slowly turned in time on in the first quarter after big goals to Robbie Allen and Dylan Willson, but the strength and experience of Marc Holt in the goal square ensured the SEFNL could weather the storm and take a narrow three point lead. 50 STAR NEWS

“Our forward entries, get them in quicker and longer,” SEFNL coach Rhys Nisbet said at quarter time. “When we don’t have the footy, be aware where your opponent is, you’ve got to be aware of where he’s at - let’s tighten it up a little bit, and again it’s that voice, be demanding of your teammates. “Once we get it, you can see Vel (Anthony Vella) and Ash (Smith) off the half back flank and away we go.” Nisbet’s words eventually rang true in the second term after big James Charge slotted a massive goal from a tight angle for the Yarra Ranges, but from there, the SEFNL were at their defensive best, transitioning the ball superbly through Smith, Vella and Luke Sheppard off half back, giving Gunn, Holt and the exciting Ryan Jones plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard. The SEFNL increased their lead to 18 points at half time, but the energy and tenacity of the Yarra Ranges had them well and truly in the contest. Control began to creep in to the SEFNL’s game after the main break. In the space of 41 seconds, Luke Sheppard already slammed through a vital goal, and after Tim Gunn kicked a dynamic goal from the pocket, the lead stretched its way out to 30. Most of the elements of their game started to work, Jake Bowd was slicing the game apart with his laser kicking in defence, Michael Riseley was working over his opponents, while Collins worked his way into the game to have a magnificent influence through the middle. While in attack, Holt was either bringing the ball to ground or marking it. The youngest players in the side in Mitch Cotter and Jesse Davies were also playing some absolutely top notch footy, with Cotter’s hands in traffic an absolute feature of his game. The Yarra Ranges found their first goal since early in the second quarter through some nifty work by Jake Matthews, and they slammed on two more to bring the margin back to 28-points
Ash Smith is pumped after getting the SEFNL off to a bright start 180980 at the final change. Nisbet - who had remained calm for the first three quarters - found his booming voice, challenging his side to make “statement” against players they will be seeing next year, and to go out as a competition with an almighty bang. The SEFNL stormed home despite a brave Yarra Ranges never giving in, kicking three goals to two in the final quarter to run away with a 36-point win, 16.13 (109) to 10.13 (73). The only real difference in the game was the polish, the endeavour of the Yarra Ranges and hunger to win the football can never be questioned, and for many it was a first glimpse at some of their stars. 18-year-old Patrick Bruzzese - the best afield for the losing side - was sublime, skipper
Marcus Hottes was a ball magnet, while Ethan Greenall had some special moments. SEFNL coach Rhys Nisbet said the first quarter didn’t quite to plan, but was thrilled with how his side responded after the first change. “We made some adjustments at quarter time, particularly in the middle of the ground, and that probably stemmed the flow a little bit,” he said. “Once we got it on the outside, we were confident we could break the lines and get the guys gelling together - in the first quarter we were probably feeling each other out a little bit, and once that went away we opened the game up.” Despite the Yarra Ranges double teaming Marc Holt (three goals) all day, Nisbet said in the end it opened up the door for other avenues to goal. “It did (work in our favour), and it’s a funny tactic to use in interleague footy, but he’s copped it his whole life, so he’s used to it and we were ready for it - it just meant we had some legs freed up as well, which was great,” he said. “Scoreboard pressure is the best pressure to have, the guys finished off their work really, really well - I was really happy with Timmy Gunn kicking his four goals, and Holt was a real focal point despite not getting as many goals on the board. Ryan Jones was outstanding as well.” Berwick forward Tim Gunn is likely to go down as the final best afield medallist for the SEFNL in what was a dynamic four goal display that made him almost impossible to match up on. He kicked the goals when they needed to be kicked, and proved the decisive factor. It was a game that lived up to expectations, a fierce contest between two leagues desperate to claim much needed bragging rights. And it was the SEFNL that went out with a bang. The Pakenham Warriors came away with one win and two losses in Round 9 Big V action. The Division 2 Men were unable to match the firepower of Craigieburn as the Eagles asserted their dominance in the final quarter to run out 87-70 winners at Cardinia Life on Saturday night. Big man Josh Bjelan (17 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists) was a force on both ends of the court as he tried his best to keep the Warriors in it. Robin Maartens also chipped in with 12 points. It wasn't enough though, as three Eagles scored at least 19 points to spread the load and grab the win. The loss was Pakenham's second in a row and they now sit sixth on the ladder with a 5-5 record. The Youth League 2 Men made light work of the Western Port Steelers at home on Saturday evening. Leading from start to finish, the Warriors took control in the first quarter and ran out 99-81 winners. Ned Weideman gave the Steelers defence fits as he caught fire, finishing with 35 points (five triples) in an efficient and dominant display. Weideman wasn't content with just scoring though, also recording 15 rebounds, 5 assist and 2 blocks. Lee Belton added 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Pakenham remains fourth on the ladder with a record of 8-3 - just one loss more than the top-placed Melton Thoroughbreds. The Youth League 2 Women were unable to overcome a slow start against the Blackburn Vikings on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings jumped out to a 23-8 lead early, but to the Warriors credit, they fought back and almost pulled off a most unlikely comeback win, falling agonisingly short 69-70. Samantha Neil (13 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, 4 blocks) was tremendous all game, while Sarah Thomson (16 points) topscored for the Warriors. Ellie Coutts (8 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds) was her usual do-it-all self. The loss was Pakenham's second of the season and the team still sits second on the ladder with an impressive 7-2 record. The weekend was one of milestones for Pakenham, with Ben Gaze, Aidan Jenkinson and Tobie Dean celebrating 50-game milestones, and Craig Drew and Brad Szalek the magical 150.
