A world-renowned geological business in Devon Meadows may shut down as a result of a planning dispute with Casey Council.

Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys boasts more than 300 tons of specimens including crystals, dinosaur fossils and meteorites stored and sold from the site.

The import-export business, with rock cutting and polishing operations, however has been deemed unlawful by planning authorities.

Owner Thomas Kapitany says he's operated the business from the site since the year 2000, before the land was re-zoned to Green Wedge A. The trade is worth "millions" of dollars to the local economy, as well as employing 20 staff, he says.

He's consulted and supplied museums around the world, trains geology students and travels 10 months of the year following his "hobby" and "lifestyle".

"I'm too old to set up a new business and relocate - I don't need it.

"I can't imagine the council will be stupid enough to close it down.

"If they do, the council will be embarrassed all over the world."

The dispute began when Casey Council refused an application for Crystal World for a certificate of compliance for the business in January 2017.

It was part of a bid by Crystal World to extend its warehouse, gallery and showroom.

Mr Kapitany then applied for a decision review at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which ruled against him on 24 April.

At VCAT, Mr Kapitany argued that Crystal World qualified for an exemption from Green Wedge rules due to operating continuously for longer than the '15-year-rule'.

He produced a business registration record dated 1999, with the Devon Meadows site listed as the primary address.

Casey statutory planning and building services manager Duncan Turner said the owners had not had planning permits to use the land for warehousing or retail sales. Those uses were prohibited in the Green Wedge, he said.

"Following the verdict of VCAT, the land owner will now need to comply with the decision and the State Government provisions applicable to a Green Wedge Zone."

Help shape Council’s Emissions Management Plan

Now in its 11th year, the Lindsay King Arts Award is Casey’s most prestigious award for the Arts, with nominations now open for eligible applicants.

The City of Casey is developing a new Emissions Management Plan (EMP) 2018-22 and is inviting the community to provide their input.

The new EMP will build upon the successful implementation of the former EMP 2012-17 which significantly reduced Council’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Casey is undertaking two consultations in relation to the proposal of speed management devices within the municipality.

The plan will provide a strategic pathway for Council for the next four years to invest in energy efficiency and renewable technology to maximise economic and environmental benefits to the city.

Council is proposing five, flat top speed humps with line marking and signage along Clarendon Street, Cranbourne as well as four, flat top speed humps with line marking and signage along Clive Street, Hampton Park.

The award recognises those whose initiatives have made a significant contribution to the Arts in Casey.

Applications close on Sunday 3 June with no self or group nominations accepted.

New bail laws bite

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A string of bail applications fell by the wayside as stricter bail laws came into effect at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 May. Jeanelle Pene, 39, of Cranbourne East, scrapped her bail application after learning she'd have to prove 'exceptional circumstances' to gain her release.

The test applied due to Pene being charged with an indictable charge - drug trafficking while being on bail for another indictable offence.

"It's changing things quickly, isn't it," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said.

'Exceptional circumstances' was a "very high bar", Mr Vandersteen told another prisoner who abandoned their bail app that day.

The applicant had to prove circumstances that were "out of the ordinary" or "unusual", he said.

Pene instead opted to plead guilty to a sentence indication of six months' jail.

She had already served 27 days in remand

since being arrested at her home on 24 April.

She faced up to 23 charges including trafficking meth and several counts of handling stolen goods.

Police searched the home after discovering a stolen Navara with NSW plates parked in the driveway, the court heard.

Inside the home, they found Pene as well as drugs and other stolen goods including a Subaru car and power tools in the garage, a credit card, a Medicare card, two number plates, two car keys and five lap tops.

Pene was found with the drug 'ice'. A small amount of cannabis and two ecstasy tablets were also found in the home, the court heard.

Her trafficking charge was made out by her own admissions. She allegedly told police that she was selling drugs to help pay off a $20,000 Centrelink debt.

The stolen property had been left at the house by other people, she allegedly said.

She also pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing a $10,000 gas-monitoring clam from

a City of Casey landfill in Cranbourne on 28 March.

She also pleaded guilty to refusing a drugdriving test and driving an unregistered car with false number plates.

Pene faces a further hearing for allegedly breaching a County Court-imposed CCO. When the bail laws passed in June 2017, State Attorney-General Martin Pakula said they were important laws to "make Victoria safer".

"We're making it harder than ever to get bail in Victoria, and we're making community safety a higher priority."

The 'exceptional circumstances' test applies for alleged serious indictable offences committed on bail, summons, parole, a community correction order or under sentence.

The law also introduces a 'compelling reasons' test for bail applicants charged with offences such as rape, armed robbery and persistently breaching a family-violence intervention order.

Funding fears for Aboriginal outreach

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Government has assured that funding will continue at Casey's successful Aboriginal Gathering Place after Casey Council raised fears of massive cuts.

The council was set to write to the Government about the looming expiration of $205,000 of funding of four youth programs at the Doveton-based outreach facility from 1 July.

The facility's opening hours would have also been cut by about 10 hours a week, "profoundly impacting" on access to the service.

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani led an urgent business motion at a council meeting on 15 May for a funding extension.

The facility had been hailed as "the perfect model" for Aboriginal community outreach by the Department of Health and Human Services' prinicipal Aboriginal advisor, Cr Crestani noted.

"I've seen first-hand the supportive and connected space for our indigenous sisters and brothers.

"It is a positive environment."

Cr Rex Flannery declared he would be "embarrassed" to meet at Bunjil Place if the programs were cut.

The gathering place offers something for scores of visitors of all ages - groups for youths, gardening, women's crafts, playgroup children and primary-school aged children.

It serves a substantial indigenous community in Casey and neighbouring Dandenong.

Artist 'Uncle' Doug Brown, who attends and helped set-up the centre, said it was a place that people could come and go.

"They can have a cup of coffee or tea and talk about their problems with the workers.

"You don't have to make an appointment.

The centre was vital to address social isolation, he said.

"Before it was set up, we didn't have anything like it around here."

The $205,000 funding in question covers the Building Strong Aboriginal Youth regional co-ordinator and program as well as an Aboriginal Health co-ordinator.

It threatens the gathering place's beforeschool sports programs with breakfast and school attendance, Dandenong and District Aboriginal Cooperative youth groups, a kids club and health promotions and weekly events.

Health Minister Jill Hennessey on 17 May told Star News that "there's no question - the funding for this very important program is secure".

"We are working with Aboriginal community controlled organisations involved to ensure the success of the Aboriginal Gathering Place continues."

Casey Council recently increased its funding for youth homework and school holiday programs in 2018-'19.

The facility also receives $171,500 in federal funding, which expires in October 2020. Funds for a local justice worker program expire on 30 June 2019.

Cr Crestani said funding needed to continue during the transition to the State Government's new 10-year Aboriginal health, wellbeing and safety plan, known as the Korin Korin Balit-Djak plan.

She said there had been "positive negotiations" with the Department but "we don't want the programs to be lost between now and when the 10-year-plan comes on board".

Online stalker wants his computer back

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man jailed for "one of the most destructive cases of stalking" including posting photos of his wife online has applied to get back his seized computer and family photos from police.

The City of Casey man, who Star News has chosen not to identify, applied to Dandenong Magistrates' Court to halt the destruction of the "tainted" computer.

He also applied to retrieve the photos and documents stored on the computer, then for it to be wiped clean and returned.

In October, he was jailed for nine months by Dandenong Magistrates' Court; the computer and its contents were ordered for destruction.

During the 21 May application, his lawyer argued that he faced "undue hardship" if the computer, his phone and his electronic tablet weren't returned to him.

"It's important for him gaining stability in his life."

He sought his holiday photos because he'd since suffered "estrangement" from his family, his lawyer told the court.

"Funny that!" magistrate Jack Vandersteen said.

"It's a consequence of what he did. It's one of the most destructive cases of stalking in terms of the impact on his family."

Mr Vandersteen noted one of the offending photos featured a holiday photo of his wife with his daughters cropped out of the image.

Another featured his wife and "her cleavage" being identified within a group shot, Mr Vandersteen said.

The lawyer said the man required his "personal" documents such as superannuation and taxation files and his resum¨¦.

They could be transferred onto a "clean" hard drive supplied by his sister, he submitted.

In opposing the application, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Savin said it could be hard to distinguish which files were "tainted".

Undisclosed files and photos could also be hidden in "all different areas" of the computer.

The phone and tablet were the initial means of proving he had uploaded the offending images, Lead Sen Const Savin said. The computer was used to access offending websites.

The applicant's lawyer said he was aware it won't be a fast process, but could specify the required folders 'My Documents' and 'My Videos'.

Mr Vandersteen ruled that the man could be supplied copies of the documents only.

"It's not appropriate for anything further than that because it's all tainted property, all used in the commission of the offence."

A multicultural quilt that bound together the work of more than 300 people from 30 cultural groups has been launched at Bunjil Place.

The four-square metre work featured a sunlit dancer ringed by 31 cultural symbols representing Casey community groups.

It was designed to express the 'common thread' of humanity.

Fittingly, the quilt was celebrated with performances from dancers and singers from Uruguay, Bosnia, India, Mauritius and Chile.

Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott, artist Dena Aljamal, embroider Claire Armstrong and Hampton Park Community House manager Tania Succo took part in a Q&A. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley, who hosted the 5 May launch, said the quilt connected people.

"No matter where you are from you'll find something that you connect with in the quilt.

"I was thrilled to see the hard work of so many different people come together for a fantastic result."

Aljamal earlier told Star News that the dancer centrepiece to the quilt was something of a universal language, linking all of the

30 featured groups.

"I wanted something to satisfy everyone.

"It's nice that in Australia we have this harmony between each other."

The project was granted $5000 by the State Government.

A 2016 Casey Council candidate has been put on a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to failing to disclose election donations within 40 days.

Frank Lamattina, a well-known vegetable grower in Clyde, was charged by the Local Government Inspectorate for allegedly failing to submit a return by the 1 December 2016 deadline.

Candidates were required to submit returns declaring election gifts or donations totalling more than $500.

Appearing at Frankston Magistrates' Court on 16 May, Mr Lamattina was put on a 12-month adjourned undertaking without conviction.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge ordered Mr Lamattina to pay $2500 into the Court Fund, which is then distributed to local charities.

He must also pay the prosecuting Local Government Inspectorate's $1750 legal costs.

Another Casey candidate Faisal Najibi pleaded guilty to the same offence in March.

He was put on an adjourned undertaking without conviction and ordered to pay $1000 in costs to the Local Government Inspectorate.

During the 2016 poll Mr Lamattina polled second in Balla Balla Ward with 1862 first-preference votes.

Mayor Geoff Ablett, who was preferenced

by Mr Lamattina, won the seat with more than 7000 votes.

The offence carries a maximum court imposed fine of $9327.60.

Good sports Berwick Springs Reserve will receive $100,000 towards upgrades as part of a Liberal Party State election pledge.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy, SouthEast Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich and Narre Warren South candidate Susan Serey announced the funding towards extending the pavilion, installing an electronic scoreboard and seating around the ground.

They were joined by members of the Berwick Springs cricket and junior football teams that use the reserve.

Mr Guy said that his Government, if elected, would spend money on community sport rather than "Daniel Andrews' priorities of building a ballroom at Etihad Stadium".

Ms Serey said she'd promoted the project vigorously as a candidate for the seat in 2014.

In the lead-up to that election, the Liberals pledged $250,000 to the project.

In the interim, City of Casey had upgraded part of the pavilion, with the installation of an industrial kitchen, a Liberal spokeswoman said.

The project requires further funding, with City of Casey having no plans to upgrade the site in 2018-'19.

Casey Council service and asset planning manager Wayne Mack said he nevertheless welcomed commitments from "all parties" to upgrade facilities in the municipality.

Gary Maas, the ALP candidate for Narre Warren South, said the Government had invested $241.6 million in womens and community sport in the recent budget, including an upgrade of Casey Fields for the AFLW Demons.

Grant money was also allocated for uniforms and coaching programs at local clubs, he said.

"Local clubs will also benefit from the upgrades to Casey Fields."

The idea is, the government buys up all Australian produced surpluses, sheep, cattle, horses, goats, buffalo, pigs, camels, kangaroos, crocodiles, chickens, ducks,turkeys and they process them humanely - i.e. NO Halal.

This meat is fozen, dried and tinned, then stored. Likewise all our grain, made into flour, cereals, biscuits etc. Our sugar and honey packed, tinned and bottled. Our fruits and vegetables all processed, milk and eggs dried. The list is endless - tents, blankets, sheets, towels, camp beds and some furniture, tools of every type, all Australian made and surplus, bought up by the government, processed and stored, using the money we would give as Foreign Aid which manages to end up in Swiss bank accounts and doesn’t reach where it should.

The beauty of this system is, the producers always sell all their produce, Foreign Aid can be sent in containers, directly where it is needed in the right mix and quantities and best of all, our charities could be allowed to draw from these facilities at no charge, a win-win situation for everyone.

Last but not least is the staff who will be needed to build and run these facilities, paid for by the same Foreign Aid money, employment for many thousands of people.

Carly Feltham-Palmer: What frustrates me is that council happily approve for all these estates to be built in and around the area, with no forethought into 'perhaps' making the developers a little more accountable for community infrastructure. Yet, there is another estate going up on the border of Junction Village (Acacia Botanic), where I would assume there will be more children requiring public education, so they'll go to either Cranbourne South or Devon Meadows Primary School, additional funding will not likely be provided other than the usual money coming into the school.

It's worth noting both were once small country schools. Jude Perera is a joke; I've raised the issue with him repeatedly about changing the school speed zone in Devon Meadows to the 40 or 50 and to no avail (currently 80, into 60) at the school border. In the end it was a mum who approached council after reading some clause, and this will now be changed. He'll take all the accolades he can, in the hope this helps with his successor with re-election, even though he had nothing to do with it. In what was previously a Labor dominant area, the area is changing and changing rapidly due to the constituents having enough of ineffective local government. End rant lol.

Teen behind bars

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A youth has been refused bail after being charged with an aggravated burglary with three other juveniles in Narre Warren on 18 May. At a childrens court hearing on 21 May, the teen male denied he played a part in the home break-in at Franleigh Drive at 3.10am.

The accused youth had been captured on CCTV trying a car's door handle in the home's driveway just before two youths entered the house, police told the court.

Twenty minutes later, the four alleged cooffenders used a credit card stolen from the burglary to buy $37 of food and drinks for at a nearby McDonald's, the court heard.

They were arrested and interviewed by

police the next day. At the time, the teen was breaching a night curfew as part of his supervised bail conditions.

Youth Justice did not support the latest bail application because the boy was allegedly offending just a week after being put on supervised bail, the court heard.

He was living with his mother, was being supported by a youth crime prevention worker and set to start a TAFE course.

He'd also been referred to headspace youth mental health service.

The teen had been reportedly engaging well with a youth crime prevention worker. It was too early for the program to have an effect, the court was told.

The magistrate said "it was almost a joke" that the teen breached his bail curfew "straightaway".

He was already on a deferred sentence for past offending, with the alleged agg burg a further escalation, the judge said.

"I warned you and warned you and warned you.

"You were before the court a few weeks ago and we spoke about a curfew. I told you how important it was for you to be at home.

"If you were at home, none of this would have happened."

The teen was remanded in custody to appear at a later date.

Choke-victim tries to escape moving car

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A woman has tried to jump out of a moving car in Narre Warren North to escape an allegedly violent ex-partner, a court bail hearing has heard on 21 May. The accused Endeavour Hills man, 27, had allegedly twice choked the victim - at her home in February and during a heated drive in the South East suburbs on the night of 19-20 May. According to police, she had remained in Dandenong Hospital for the past two days with swelling around her neck.

She also suffered a lump on her head, grazes on her back and pain to her elbow, the court heard. She was in fear for her life, Det Sen Const Smith said.

In the latter case, he aggressively rebuked her for several hours for going to police with family violence allegations in February, the woman claimed.

Police informant Detective Senior Constable Michael Smith told the court that at one

point as he drove her in his mother's car, she asked to be taken back to her vehicle.

He started driving erratically in the opposite direction, telling her he knew of a lookout that no one knows about, Det Sen Const Smith said.

While on Belgrave-Hallam Road, she tried to jump out of the car at 80km/h, she told police. The man allegedly held her in by her jumper.

Further along, she tried again at about 60km/h, she claimed. Her foot hit the ground, she lost a shoe and a sock as the man held her in by her jumper, the court heard.

As she's tried to flee, the man has caught her, choked her and threatened to kill her, the court was told.

She wriggled out of her jumper at one point, Det Sen Const Smith said.

He grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her jumper in her mouth to stop her screaming, and grabbed the phone out of her hand,

She ran to the nearest house without her top on, and was assisted by the residents, the court heard.

At the time, she was protected by a full intervention order against the man, the court heard.

They had split up in February, but were seeing each other regularly over the past three weeks.

At the 21 May bail hearing, the man was required to show compelling reasons for his release.

Police told the court he was an unacceptable risk due to the seriousness of the alleged assaults and threats.

Under cross-examination, the informant said the man had no violent criminal history, nor had he been previously served with intervention orders.

He was remanded for the continuation of the bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 May.

Students without peer

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Twenty remarkable students at Federation University have been presented with scholarships at a ceremony in Berwick on 5 May. The scholarships included elite athlete, industry placement, Year 12 and economic hardship categories.

Tylah Meunier, a particularly driven Victorian Institute of Sport cyclist living in Pakenham, was among the recipients.

He is devoting himself to up to seven days a week of training, including at the institute at Albert Park as well as the hills behind Pakenham.

The wildlife veterinarian science student is driven to go that bit faster with every training session.

In the past year, he has put on more than 10 kilograms of muscle. You have to be a "big, strong unit" for track cycling, he says.

Somehow in his busy schedule, he is studying as well as working two jobs.

"If I did sport all day I'd be sick of it. It's good to be mentally challenging myself.

"You've just got love what you're doing.".

Ebony-Rose Nudelman, of Hastings, also received a scholarship as she starts her youthwork diploma.

She is inspired to help others following

Making the right call It was a debate that perhaps many students have a vested interest - should mobile phones be banned in schools?

As part of Law Week, Narre Warren South P-12 College Year 10 legal studies students debated the pros and cons of the contentious rule.

There were good arguments on both sides.

Phones can assist in an emergency if a teacher isn't close at hand. They can be used to call on their parents to drop off forgotten homework, and to generally enhance learning.

But those against claimed they were a distraction, a target for thieves and an added cyber-bullying risk.

Too distracted for sentence

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been remanded in custody after a magistrate held off sentencing due to the man's "distracted", "annoyed" and "disinterested" attitude.

The 30-year-old had pleaded guilty to breaches of two corrections orders and an intervention order as well as driving on ice, shoplifting and disqualified driving at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 23 May. The court heard of an incident in January in which he'd tried to force his way into the expartner's Cranbourne home.

The man removed his clothes and rolled around on the grass outside, before pulling a sliding door off its hinges to get inside.

While hiding in a wardrobe, the victim yelled that police were on their way. The man fled in his car and was served with an intervention order.

He breached that order twice, including

banging on her house for 20 minutes and demanding her to "open the f***ing door" on 20 March.

Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell told the court that the man had not been in trouble with the law until September last year but had a history of poly-substance abuse since his late teens. He was using meth daily at the time of the incidents, Ms Strugnell said.

He had been in pre-sentence remand for the past 62 days.

During sentencing, magistrate Jack Vandersteen had indicated that the man faced 120 days of jail time followed by a corrections order.

He then pulled up, observing the man "seems a bit disinterested" as well as "distracted" and "annoyed" while in the dock.

The accused said: "Can I ask a question?"

Mr Vandersteen refused the request, remanding the man for sentencing via video link on 6 June.

Brown leads orange

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren-based Clinton Brown, 30, is making his mark as one of VICSES's most youthful unit controllers.

He is one of the faces of this year's Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day campaign - a national day of thanks for SES volunteers on 23 May. Beside his full-time job, Mr Brown volunteers his time to run Casey's only SES unit.

Its 50 members are on hand to respond to more than 640 callouts a year.

However, 2018 has proven unusually busy, with more than 400 calls for help in the first five months.

The calls can come any time, Mr Brown says.

Often volunteers are roused out of their beds to attend a leaking roof, flooding home or a fallen tree.

They are often braving the worst of wet and windy weather.

Mr Brown's duties are many, but he enjoys it.

He keeps the unit financially compliant and sound, ensures the members are trained and the equipment is up-to-date.

When he started with the unit in 2009, he was just eager to meet a new challenge and new people.

"It's the friendships and the people - you respect the people who are prepared to get out of bed in the pouring rain to help somebody.

"It's about giving back and helping people in their time of need."

With Casey's second unit set to roll-out in Cranbourne, the SES eagerly seeks new members.

They gain accredited training and expertise in general rescue and emergency operations.

Barks in park Wilson Botanic Park turned into a jungle of animals for the annual Casey Pet Expo on 19 May. The City of Casey event promoted responsible pet ownership with a splash of fun - wildlife demos, pet photo-booths and the entertaining Flipping Disc Dogz.

Mayor Geoff Ablett said Casey had 37,000 registered cats and dogs - one of the highest pet-registration rates in Melbourne.

Singers are hitting their notes at the annual Star Search for a Cause auditions.

Organiser Naomi Horsley said it not only gave up to 100 singers a chance to strut their stuff on stage but all entry fees were donated to the Cancer Council to support people with cancer.

This may be the big chance for those confining their talents to singing in the shower or around the house, Ms Horsley said.

Singers compete against their own age-level in the junior, intermediate, senior or over-21 categories.

"It's amazing the talent that you see in the junior section - the big voices in these little people.

"We also want the older age groups out there as well. Just because you're 25 years or older doesn't mean you shouldn't go out and have fun with it.

"This is a chance to perform, to gain experience ... You never know who is watching."

Last year, the all-ages competition raised $5000 - which was donated to brain cancer research at Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute.

"We want those funds to go to research as well as people going through a cancer journey," Ms Horsley said.

"What better way to help children sitting in a hospital all day. At least, it's brightening their lives a little."

Walk for learning Walkers stepped out in support for education in Timor Leste during a fundraiser at Wilson Botanic Park on 20 May. The Walk for Timor raised more than $1000 for learning materials at two English language study centres in the municipality of Ermera.

The centres are key to young people learning English and opening up a range of study and career options, spokeswoman Jan Trezise said.

The walk was organised by Casey-based group Friends of Ermera and Year 9 students from Gleneagles Secondary College.

It was followed by nourishing homemade soup, fresh fruit and cakes.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue.

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - AFL VICTORIA COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS On a day of so much significance and hype, the only thing the packed crowd wanted to see at Holm Park was a fair, tough and entertaining game of footy.

It was not only that, but it was more.

The Yarra Ranges certainly left no stone unturned, they bashed and crashed the packs, dared to take the game on and never gave up until the final siren blared. But the South East just did it that bit better.

Regardless of the outcome of the proposed merger in 2019 between the two leagues, football in the region is in good shape.

There was just one change to the SEFNL’s side on game day, with athletic ruckman Gach Nyuon pulling out of the game, replaced by the versatile Troy Tharle.

It was a hot start, with the ball flinging from one end to another. The starting midfield of Madi Andrews, Brad Scalzo and Michael Collins - three names that can frighten even the most seasoned local footballers - got the SEFNL off to a bright start by winning the ball from the middle, and on the outside Luke Bee-Hugo started brightly with his driving run.

After locking the ball inside fifty for five minutes, Berwick star Ash Smith got the crowd roaring with the opening goal, courtesy of a horror turnover out of defence.

Moments later, Tim Gunn curled the ball around expertly in the first of his four majors, but the Yarra Ranges were getting their chances, but were unable to convert in front of goal, something that crept into their game and eventually became their undoing.

The tide slowly turned in time on in the first quarter after big goals to Robbie Allen and Dylan Willson, but the strength and experience of Marc Holt in the goal square ensured the SEFNL could weather the storm and take a narrow three point lead. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

“Our forward entries, get them in quicker and longer,” SEFNL coach Rhys Nisbet said at quarter time.

“When we don’t have the footy, be aware where your opponent is, you’ve got to be aware of where he’s at - let’s tighten it up a little bit, and again it’s that voice, be demanding of your teammates.

“Once we get it, you can see Vel (Anthony Vella) and Ash (Smith) off the half back flank and away we go.”

Nisbet’s words eventually rang true in the second term after big James Charge slotted a massive goal from a tight angle for the Yarra Ranges, but from there, the SEFNL were at their defensive best, transitioning the ball superbly through Smith, Vella and Luke Sheppard off half back, giving Gunn, Holt and the exciting Ryan Jones plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard.

The SEFNL increased their lead to 18 points at half time, but the energy and tenacity of the Yarra Ranges had them well and truly in the contest.

Control began to creep in to the SEFNL’s game after the main break. In the space of 41 seconds, Luke Sheppard already slammed through a vital goal, and after Tim Gunn kicked a dynamic goal from the pocket, the lead stretched its way out to 30.

Most of the elements of their game started to work, Jake Bowd was slicing the game apart with his laser kicking in defence, Michael Riseley was working over his opponents, while Collins worked his way into the game to have a magnificent influence through the middle.

While in attack, Holt was either bringing the ball to ground or marking it.

The youngest players in the side in Mitch Cotter and Jesse Davies were also playing some absolutely top notch footy, with Cotter’s hands in traffic an absolute feature of his game.

The Yarra Ranges found their first goal since early in the second quarter through some nifty work by Jake Matthews, and they slammed on two more to bring the margin back to 28-points

Nisbet - who had remained calm for the first three quarters - found his booming voice, challenging his side to make “statement” against players they will be seeing next year, and to go out as a competition with an almighty bang.

The SEFNL stormed home despite a brave Yarra Ranges never giving in, kicking three goals to two in the final quarter to run away with a 36-point win, 16.13 (109) to 10.13 (73).

The only real difference in the game was the polish, the endeavour of the Yarra Ranges and hunger to win the football can never be questioned, and for many it was a first glimpse at some of their stars.

Marcus Hottes was a ball magnet, while Ethan Greenall had some special moments.

SEFNL coach Rhys Nisbet said the first quarter didn’t quite to plan, but was thrilled with how his side responded after the first change.

“We made some adjustments at quarter time, particularly in the middle of the ground, and that probably stemmed the flow a little bit,” he said.

“Once we got it on the outside, we were confident we could break the lines and get the guys gelling together - in the first quarter we were probably feeling each other out a little bit, and once that went away we opened the game up.”

Despite the Yarra Ranges double teaming Marc Holt (three goals) all day, Nisbet said in the end it opened up the door for other avenues to goal.

“It did (work in our favour), and it’s a funny tactic to use in interleague footy, but he’s copped it his whole life, so he’s used to it and we were ready for it - it just meant we had some legs freed up as well, which was great,” he said.

“Scoreboard pressure is the best pressure to have, the guys finished off their work really, really well - I was really happy with Timmy Gunn kicking his four goals, and Holt was a real focal point despite not getting as many goals on the board. Ryan Jones was outstanding as well.”

Berwick forward Tim Gunn is likely to go down as the final best afield medallist for the SEFNL in what was a dynamic four goal display that made him almost impossible to match up on. He kicked the goals when they needed to be kicked, and proved the decisive factor.

It was a game that lived up to expectations, a fierce contest between two leagues desperate to claim much needed bragging rights.

And it was the SEFNL that went out with a bang.

Cavs claim a big scalp

By Hayley Wildes In Round 9 Big V action, the Casey Cavaliers went 3-1, including a statement win from the State Championship Men. Going up against the top-placed Waverley Falcons - who were riding a six-game winning streak - was the task at hand for the Cavs on Sunday afternoon at home.

The Cavs got straight to work and with Raheem Lemons leading the way, as he has done all season, Casey claimed its best win of the season, 96-86.

Lemons was dynamic on both ends of the court and finished with a near triple-double of 21 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists. His aggressive mindset from the opening tip helped keep the Falcons at bay.

Brandon Polk (18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) was also impressive, while Brent Hobba caught fire from deep and added 16 points.

The Cavs now sit seventh on the ladder with a 5-5 record.

The Division 1 Women were simply a class above their Whittlesea opponents at home on Saturday night, putting on an offensive masterclass to claim a mammoth 112-61 win.

Tanarly Hood and Jamie-Lee Jeffs feasted on offence and took over the game. Hood finished with 32 points (11/16 FG), 10 rebounds and a vicious crossover that left two opponents gasping for air on the floor.

Jeffs (27 points, 15 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals) was sublime on both ends of the court.

The Lady Cavs boast a 10-2 record and sit second on the ladder.

The Youth League 1 Men were unable to keep up with the Waverley Falcons on Sunday afternoon, falling 69-85.

Luke Beard top-scored with 14 points, while Jordan Gooiker (12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and Dylan Moore (12 points, 5 rebounds) were busy.

With a record of 5-6, the Cavs are eighth on the ladder.

The Youth League 2 Women remain undefeated after a resounding 82-62 win over Whittlesea on Saturday night.

As they've proven all season, the Lady Cavs are capable of turning on the offence at any point. Despite an even first quarter, Casey went on a run in the second quarter to take control of the game and never looked back.

Kim Shankland (15 points, 12 rebounds) posted a dominant double-double, while Stephanie Leclerc (15 points) and Peta Rhodes (13 points, 5 rebounds) kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The Lady Cavs perfect season has hit a new high with the team now boasting a 9-0 record, sitting first on the ladder.

The State Championship and Youth League 1 Men face the Hume City Broncos in Broadmeadows on Saturday night, before the State Championship Men return home on Sunday to take on Werribee at 1:30pm.

The Casey Demons were simply dominant in a resounding win over the Frankston Dolphins on Saturday afternoon.

After Frankston kicked the first major of the day, Casey slammed on 21 of the next 24 goals - including 12 unanswered - to record a percentage-boosting 106-point win.

The Demons were clean and composed, while their size and experience was too much for their Dolphin opponents.

The first quarter was a tight one as the Dolphins squandered many opportunities in front of goal. The Demons were led by Cam Pedersen who booted two goals in the quarter to ensure they took a small lead into the first break, 2.2 (14) to 1.6 (12).

A lift in intensity was needed and Casey delivered. The second quarter was all one-way traffic as the Demons slammed on seven goals to none. Tomas Bugg slotted two, whilst Pedersen added his third of the day.

Josh Wagner and Pedersen were everywhere and getting the ball going the Demons way at every opportunity.

The third quarter was the Cam Pedersen Show.

He controlled the airways up forward, marking everything he could get his hands on and kicking three consecutive Casey goals taking his tally to six for the day.

His ability to compete in the air and then

finish off his good work with straight kicking in front of goal had the Dolphins defence on the back foot all day. Sam Frost and Jay Lockhart were also getting their hands on the ball and both were the source of many attacking forays.

A 60-point lead at the final break had Casey well in control, but in a sign that will please Demons fans, the team wasn’t content.

A barnstorming final quarter was kicked off

by Bugg booting two goals in the opening four minutes. 13 scoring shots to two highlighted Casey’s utter dominance as they ruthlessly picked apart the Dolphins defence.

Eight goals to one for the quarter saw the Demons run out 21.13 (139) to 4.9 (33) winners.

The Demons were a class above the Dolphins and Pedersen (six goals, 22 disposals) staked his claim for an AFL call-up in a best afield performance.

Frost, Lockhart and Mitch White were impressive, while Jeff Garlett, Tom Bugg (five goals) and Jayden Hunt (game-high 23 disposals) also performed well - keeping their names in the minds of AFL selectors.

The win places Casey fourth on the ladder with a 4-2 record. Looking ahead to round 8, Casey heads to North Port Oval on Saturday afternoon to take on Port Melbourne (4-2).

The match-up shapes up as an important one, and should be a cracking contest, as both teams look to jump ahead of the logjam from fourth to tenth on the ladder.

NARRE WARREN BOWLS The final figures are still being tallied, but Narre Warren Bowls club stands to raise over $2500 for their Bowl Over Cancer tournament and fundraising day.

In trying weather conditions, 26 teams of regular and social bowlers (including children) took to the greens on a cool Sunday morning.

The tournament was started last year in support of a Club member who suffers from cancer, but is presently in remission.

The bowling honours for the day went to

Zak Storm, Brent Grigg and Peter Wright. The prize for teams with non-bowlers was won by Stan Bulmer, Anne Bulmer and Zade Bumer.

The main prize was won in an auction by Dale Collins. Her prize was another Mazda MX5 for a weekend, again donated by Berwick Mazda. The Club thanks all the sponsors for the day, including Berwick Mazda, Barry Plant Real Estate, Bunnings, Woolworths, fish pier Fountain Gate and Petty's Prime Cuts - Fountain Gate, being the main ones. A Tornado Tears up the track at Sandown

By Mick Floyd Tornado Tears showed why he is regarded one of the most exciting stayers of his generation with a dazzling display in a heat of the RSN Sandown Cup last Thursday night.

Tornado Tears entered the night as the $2.50 favourite to win the final of world’s richest race stayers and quickly showed why. In the most eagerly anticipated heat of the night - billed as a two dog battle between litter mates Tornado Tears and Rippin’ Sam - Tornado Tears found the early lead and made the race his own.

Railing strongly to lead through the first turn, he quickly established a four length break with a lap to go. Known as ‘Batman’ due to his distinctive markings , Tornado Tears continued to increase his lead while carving out stunning sectionals before stopping the clock in 41.297 seconds - the fourth fastest time ever

run over the trip.

“He’s almost the perfect stayer,” said handler Peter Riley, six years to the day after champion Miata set the time standard of 41.17. “(He’s got) early speed, (and) finishes it off - you can’t ask for any more. I reckon with the right conditions he might give the record a nudge.”

Rippin’ Sam, a group winner considered by many as the best stayer in the country, will also take his place in the $250,000 final tonight (Thursday) after charging home late to finish second nearly six lengths adrift.

Remarkably, it was just Tornado Tears’ second start over the distance. His first came four weeks prior and went within a half a length of Miata’s long standing record and that run took the white and black chaser some time to recover.

It was a memorable night on Thursday for his trainer Robert Britton, who won three of the four RSN Sandown Cup heats. Quick Jagger and Benali also made their way through to $250,000 final after winning their respective heats - giving Britton a four-pronged attack on a second consecutive RSN Sandown Cup. Dyna Chancer was the other heat on his staying debut, stopping the clock in a smart 41.67.

In the wake of his win, Tornado Tears shot into $1.70 for the final of the world’s richest staying race, despite Britton hoping for an inside draw. The box draw played out as: 1 - Benali, 2 - Zipping Nitro, 3 - Quick Jagger, 4 - Royal Attention, 5 - Dyna Chancer, 6 - Moment to Jive, 7 - Tornado Tears, 8 - Rippin’ Sam, 9 - Dundee Calypso, and 10 - Myrniong Corner.

Meanwhile in the $100,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown, Dyna Patty consolidated her favouritism after coming up with Box 3.

Rays send a message in a dominant win

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays have again showcased their class and depth in a first versus second showdown against the Murray Bushrangers at RAMS Arena on Saturday.

In what shaped as the game of the round, the contest absolutely lived up to the hype in a high-scoring affair.

It was an even first quarter as neither side was able to break the game open. The Stingrays had their chances, but squandered some opportunities to get off to a strong start.

After one quarter it was the Rays leading 2.3 (15) to 2.0 (12). Both sides were cracking in at the contest and the back and forth action showcased why these two teams were at the top of the ladder.

The second quarter was when the Rays made their move and through the likes of Bailey Williams, Sam Fletcher and Corey Ellison up forward, Dandenong took control of the game. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Despite their dominant quarter, the Rays were again wasteful in front of goal. Their 22-point half time lead should’ve been closer to 40 points had they finished off their good work.

The Bushrangers’ straight kicking, 5.0 (30), was keeping them in the contest as the Rays had more than three times as many scoring shots; 7.10 (52).

An arm-wrestle took place in the third quarter as the stars for both teams got heavily involved. Hudson Garoni (seven goals), Ben Kelly and Laitham Vandermeer stepped up for the Rangers, while Zac Foot, Matthew Cottrell and Jai Taylor started to get busy for the Rays.

A 16-point Dandenong lead with a quarter to go had the match set up for a thrilling final quarter. A shootout ensued in the fourth. Excellent ball movement and forward half teamwork was on display from both teams.

A whopping 11 goals were kicked in the quarter as the Rays finally found their range

in front of goal, booting 6.1 (37) for the term to claim an impressive 16.13 (109) to 14.3 (87) win.

In a season that has been full of impressive performances, the Rays once again stepped up to the challenge and put together a tremendous team effort.

Corey Ellison was electric in the forward half, booting six majors in a best afield performance. The big forward controlled the Rays’ forward half, toying with the Bushrangers defenders for much of the day.

He wasn’t alone though, as Bailey Williams, Sam Fletcher and Zac Foot continued their impressive run of form. Williams is a key pillar for the Rays and his ability to work over his opponent with his athleticism was again on show.

After seven rounds, the Stingrays now boast a 6-1 record and sit on top of the ladder. Next week, 3 June, Dandenong takes on Sandringham at Shepley Oval from 10.45am.

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE The Eastern Football League defeated the Geelong Football Netball League, 16.9 (105) to 9.9 (63), to claim the number one ranking in the AFL Victoria Community Championships.

The battle between the one and two ranked teams took place at Etihad Stadium prior to the AFL clash between Collingwood and St Kilda.

The EFL got off to a strong start - leading by two goals at the first break - and a thrilling contest ensued over the middle two quarters as a high-quality game of football took place.

With the game in the balance and a 12-point lead heading into the final term, the boys from Eastern put their foot down in an impressive final quarter display.

The likes of Liam Wale-Buxton and Tom Schneider (Vermont), Leigh Williams and Lachlan McDonald (Norwood) put on a show for the EFL and ensured the team was able to keep the Geelong at bay through the middle parts of the game and then explode away in the fourth.

Seven goals to two in the final term saw EFL run out 42-point winners.

Leigh Williams (seven goals) was awarded the best on ground medal for EFL. For Geelong, Jack Blood was named best.

The win secured the EFL the number one ranking heading into 2019, where they're set to do battle with the Northern Football League after they took care of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football league.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE The 22nd ranked Southern Football Netball League took care of the 23rd ranked North Central Football League in a thrilling contest at Boort Park.

The SFNL got off to a flying start, kicking seven of the first eight majors, but North Central fought their way back into the contest in the latter stages of the second quarter to be just 13 points adrift at the main break.

A back and forth third quarter provided plenty of action and an enthralling contest was in session. SFNL took a 19-point lead into the final break, thanks largely to the terrific play of Chris Carey (East Malvern), Lucas Walmsley (Dingley) and Josh Fox (Cheltenham).

North Central came out with desperation and intent in the final quarter, but SFNL fought tooth and nail to hold on for a well-deserved nine-point win, 13.6 (84) to 12.3 (75).

Carey was awarded the best on ground medal for SFNL, while Josh Fox was crucial up forward with five goals. The win sees SFNL rise to 20th on the 2019 AFL Victoria Community Championship rankings.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League has fallen further down the AFL Victoria rankings after a tough 40-point loss to the Northern Football League in the Community Championships on Saturday.

The Sharks have slipped to fifth in the rankings, with Northern surging up the table into second spot after a stunning, dominant win at Preston City Oval.

A horribly inaccurate 0.7 from Northern had the Sharks up by 14 points at quarter time after goals to Sam Fox, Billy Quigley and Luke Hewitt had them flying, but after quarter time the host team put down the clamps, taking a six point half time lead after booting four goals to one in the second term.

The Sharks worked hard to try and bring themselves back in the contest, but were undone by some errant goal kicking, and eventually went into the final quarter with a 13 point deficit.

Despite the best efforts of Fox and star midfielder Lachie Wallace, Northern kicked away, finally finding their kicking boots to kick six final term goals, 7.7 (49) to 12.17 (89).

As a result of the loss for the Sharks, they are scheduled to host Goulburn Valley next year as per the current ratings, which are subject to change.
