By Casey Neill A three-metre high fence will shield truck drivers from viewing dead bodies in Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong Councillors approved a permit for the Taha Humanity Association of Victoria to use its 9-11 Patrona Street site for embalming at their Monday 14 May meeting.

Taha is a not-for-profit organisation that provides language classes, refugee and disability services, cultural and social activities, and more to those in need.

Councillor Angela Long successfully moved an amendment to the application, to increase the fence height between 9-11 and 13-15 Patrona Street from 2.4m to 3m.

She said the applicant agreed to this compromise at a consultation meeting.

"The property next door has trucks coming in and out," she said.

"When a truck comes in, they're worried that the driver will have a view to where bodies are being taken in.

"They want to protect their workers and their drivers from having that visual.

"I think it's a workable situation."

But Cr Maria Sampey objected to the amendment and argued that the existing fence was already very high.

"It's a fact of life that we're all going to die sometime," she said.

"A body's always covered up.

"They're not driving a truck with a body for everybody to see. Come on.

"The body's not going to be in the back yard. It's going to be inside."

Cr Matthew Kirwan said Cr Long's amendment allowed a legitimate community use while protecting sensitivities of the neighbours.

Pulsars the target

By Casey Neill Nissan Pulsar owners in Greater Dandenong need to bolster their car security.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis urged them to use club locks, ensure no valuables were inside the vehicle and park in a secure location.

"There's been a significant increase in the theft of Nissan Pulsars, specifically over the last week in the Greater Dandenong area," she said on Tuesday 15 May. "Police are urging the owners of Nissan Pulsars to be vigilant with their security measures."

Det Sen Const Jarvis said it wasn't yet clear why thieves were targeting the Pulsar.

One is suspected to be the getaway car in a

handbag snatch in Springvale on Monday 7 May. The victim, a 28-year-old Springvale woman, was standing at a bus stop at Clapham Avenue and Springvale Road when two men approached.

Det Sen Const Jarvis said one was described as Asian in appearance and was wearing a navy hoodie.

The other was Caucasian and wore a grey hoodie and dark shorts.

She said both appeared to be teenagers.

They snatched the victim's bag, which contained nothing of value, and ran to a red hatchback parked nearby.

Det Sen Const Jarvis said a similar incident occurred in Noble Park on Friday 11 May, but police could not conclusively link the two.

About 11.20am, a 77-year-old woman from Noble Park was walking down Joffrey Street towards Chandler Road when two Caucasian teenage boys approached.

One tried to snatch her handbag and she fought back, but fell to the ground. She was not injured.

The thieves grabbed her bag and fled to a green Nissan Pulsar parked in Joffrey Street.

Det Sen Const Jarvis said police checks on the car revealed it was stolen from another Noble Park home between 10 and 11 May. She said police recovered it in Noble Park on Monday 14 May and would be examining it for evidence.

A three-storey apartment block will spring up in Noble Park.

Greater Dandenong Councillors approved the application for 29 Joy Parade at their Monday 14 May meeting.

The building would include nine dwellings and a basement car park.

The council report said the site was close to Noble Park's activity centre and train station, and the area was identified for "substantial change" in the council's planning policy.

Two objectors contacted the council with concerns about the number of dwellings, existing neighbourhood character, overloading infrastructure services, car parking, inadequate private open space, dwelling diversity, common property management and safety.

But the council report said: "The proposal would provide a well-designed, site-responsive medium-density development which is respectful of the surrounding area."

"Adequate car parking is proposed to be provided on site for residents and visitors "Adequate space would be provided around each boundary of the site and within the front setback in order to establish substantial landscaping and canopy tree planting."

A person's ashes were among an alleged burglary haul in Noble Park.

Greater Dandenong CIU alleged a 26-yearold Noble Park man stole a tin containing the ashes of the victim's loved one, a mobile phone and a car on Saturday 12 May. They charged him with burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft.

He will appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Monday 2 July.

An argument between two teenage boys escalated to a fist-fight in Dandenong.

Police said about six youths were sitting on a park bench in the pocket park off Lonsdale Street about 8.50pm on Friday 11 May. Two of the boys started to argue, and then one punched the other five to six times.

The victim, a 16-year-old from Cheltenham, told police his attacker then stole his mobile phone and a small amount of cash.

He suffered pain to his face but no serious injuries. He walked from the scene and contacted police.

Police interviewed a Dandenong 16-yearold and released him pending summons.

They also spoke to the other four teens present, but they are not alleged to be involved in the altercation.

Life-changing help

This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week, giving us all the opportunity to promote the role of volunteers in our community and to say thank-you to the more than six million Australians who give their time in the service of others.

I want to take this opportunity to especially thank all volunteers in the Greater Dandenong community for the work you do.

It's hard to think of any sector in the community that isn't touched by volunteering and to which volunteers make a vital contribution.

Volunteers provide support and care for the elderly, they look after our beautiful natural environment through Landcare groups, they are responsible for running our local junior and senior sporting clubs, and at the times when the community is at its most vulnerable our emergency services volunteers in the SES and CFA are there to protect us.

One of the best things we can all do is to roll up our sleeves and get involved.

Research tells us that just a few hours of volunteer work makes a difference in people's happiness.

It's proven that volunteers are healthier and even sleep better than those who don't volunteer.

The experience of helping others provides meaning, a sense of self-worth and an important social role in the community.

Volunteering at Keysborough CFA is changing Philip Yuan's life.

He and partner Shally Liu migrated to Australia from China in March last year.

"Now we are studying English at Chisholm TAFE in Dandenong," he said.

It was there they first heard about the CFA. They live a 10-minute walk from the station and were looking for volunteering opportunities.

The Journal met the couple and other new volunteers to the brigade in the lead-up to National Volunteer Week, which runs from 21 to 27 May. The crew needs more responders available during the day, like retirees Mr Yuan and Ms Liu. He said they worried they were too old at age 60 but they were welcomed into the fold.

They're soaking up as much experience as they can to better understand the Australian way of life, and practicing their English skills.

Mr Yuan wrote poems in his homeland and wants to translate them into English.

He said other people in their class questioned why they signed up for the brigade without a pay packet on the table.

"The money is yesterday," he said.

"Today is the volunteer.

"The future is my writing a novel or a lot of poems.

"This is my life."

Lei Xu is another brigade member with a multi-cultural background.

She recently transferred over from the Hampton Park crew when she moved house to Keysborough.

The 24-year-old was surprised at the variety in the CFA and finds the unpredictability of the role exciting.

Keysborough CFA volunteers Bijimon Joseph, Shally Liu, Kayly Ho, Emmanuel Vella, Zeynep Guven, Philip Yuan and Lei Xu. Dandenong girl Zeynep Guven is in Year 12 at neighbouring Sirius College.

"I love helping ad this was the perfect opportunity to join and help as much as I can," she said.

She's in a non-operational role, helping with fund-raising and community awareness, but is now considering becoming a career firefighter.

Kayly Ho, from Keysborough, joined the non-operational team after her husband signed up as a volunteer firefighter.

"I wanted to help out so the volunteer firefighters could spend more time with their family," she said.

"People forget that it's volunteer.

"These people have full-time jobs and a family to feed.

"They put that all aside if someone needs help.

"We do a lot of barbecues to fundraise.

"We also let the community know who we are as an organisation and build that face-toface rapport."

She said the brigade was part of the community and even a couple of hours was a huge help.

"There's many different charities out there wanting our help, but why look afar when something so close is in need," she said.

Queen of hearts holds all the cards in the good books

By Kyra Gillespie Author Violeta Bagia turned to writing as an escape from bullying.

“My family and I immigrated to Australia from Yugoslavia in 1996," the former Dandenong Primary School student said.

"When we got here I didn’t know English at all and we had no friends or family here.

“I didn’t even have a uniform to go to school in. It was a difficult time.”

But by age 12, Ms Bagia had grasped English so well she won first prize in a local council poetry contest.

That first taste of success propelled her into the world of publishing and literature.

Ms Bagia said her mother’s support, along with her love for Stephen King, Jennifer L Armentrout and Richelle Mead, inspired her to become a writer.

The 29-year-old, who now calls Clyde home, started work on urban fantasy series Hart of Darkness six years ago.

She has just signed her third book of the five-book series with USA-based Solstice Publishing, is finalising the final book, and has started writing a dystopian young adult trilogy, the Ceoran Chronicles.

Hart of Darkness plays heavily with concepts of light versus dark, a trope she said emerged from her own battle with darkness and depression. “The darkness is both proverbial and literal; I’ve always had a connection with the concept of lightness versus darkness because I believe there’s a bit of both inside each individual," she said.

“I think everyone has a fear of the dark but also a fascination with it.

"Too often villains are associated with darkness, but sometimes people who seem vibrant can be evil. So I’ve tried to flip that on its head.

“My protagonist Ace Hart thrives off the power of the moon and her enemy harnesses the power of the light.”

Ace is a badass former special forces soldier turned superhuman agent.

She is a fierce leader who has faced knives, bombs and warfare, and suffers from PTSD from her time in Iraq. “I used to take the train 4 STAR JOURNAL

The State Government has assured that funding will continue at Casey's successful Aboriginal Gathering Place after Casey Council raised fears of massive cuts.

The council was set to write to the Government about the looming expiration of $205,000 of funding of four youth programs at the Doveton-based outreach facility from 1 July.

The facility's opening hours would have also been cut by about 10 hours a week, "profoundly impacting" on access to the service.

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani led an urgent business motion at a council meeting on 15 May for a funding extension.

The facility had been hailed as "the perfect model" for Aboriginal community outreach by the Department of Health and Human Services' prinicipal Aboriginal advisor, Cr Crestani noted.

"I've seen first-hand the supportive and connected space for our indigenous sisters and brothers. It is a positive environment."

Cr Rex Flannery declared he would be "embarrassed" to meet at Bunjil Place if the programs were cut.

The gathering place offers something for scores of visitors of all ages - groups for youths, gardening, women's crafts, playgroup children and primary-school aged children.

It serves a substantial indigenous community in Casey and neighbouring Dandenong.

Artist 'Uncle' Doug Brown, who attends and helped set-up the centre, said it was a place that people could come and go.

"They can have a cup of coffee or tea and talk about their problems with the workers.

"You don't have to make an appointment.

You can just come in and talk."

The centre was vital to address social isolation, he said. "Before it was set up, we didn't have anything like it around here."

The $205,000 funding in question covers the Building Strong Aboriginal Youth regional co-ordinator and program as well as an Aboriginal Health co-ordinator.

It threatens the gathering place's beforeschool sports programs with breakfast and school attendance, Dandenong and District Aboriginal Cooperative youth groups, a kids club and health promotions and weekly events.

Health Minister Jill Hennessey on 17 May told Star News that "there's no question - the funding for this very important program is secure".

"We are working with Aboriginal community controlled organisations involved to ensure the success of the Aboriginal Gathering Place continues."

Casey Council recently increased its funding for youth homework and school holiday programs in 2018-'19.

The facility also receives $171,500 in federal funding, which expires in October 2020. Funds for a local justice worker program expire on 30 June 2019.

Cr Crestani said funding needed to continue during the transition to the State Government's new 10-year Aboriginal health, wellbeing and safety plan.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 23 May 1918 Local divorce case A decree nisi, for the dissolution of his marriage with Hannah Mission, was granted by Justice Hodges on Thursday last, to George Mission, of Berwick.

The parties were married in 1892 at Bordertown, South Australia, by the Rev H Leng, a minister of the Church of Christ.

They lived after marriage chiefly at Harkaway, near Berwick, but later on removed to Fitzroy.

About Christmas 1912, when petitioner arrived home one weekend he found that respondent has disappeared and taken all the furniture with her. Since then petitioner had heard no certain word of her whereabouts and applied for divorce on the grounds of dissertation for three years and upwards.

50 years ago 28 May 1968 Terror in the night Several people had lucky escapes from death or serious injury in last Thursday's wild storm which cut a swathe of damage through Noble Park, Springvale, Clayton and Dandenong.

Roofs were hurled from flats and houses, sheds lifted bodily and flung many yards, windows smashed, trees uprooted and play-

ground equipment flattened.

Beverly Grayson of Princes Highway, Springvale, was one of the lucky ones.

The roof from a nearby block of flats careered 200 feet and crashed into the front of the Grayson home.

The Springvale North State School in Princes Highway had a shelter shed lifted from its foundations and thrown against a fence 90 feet away.

The shed's wire door was flung high into a nearby tree.

Playground equipment and goal post were bent to the ground and a large pine tree crashed through the staff room.

About 2000 young people took part in the endurance race.

They travelled 115 kilometres in the team laps.

5 years ago 20 May 2013 Cut to question time A Dandenong ratepayers' group has slammed a move by Greater Dandenong Council to cap the number of public questions it will respond to during council meetings.

The criticism follows an internal review of the council's meeting procedures, which govern the way its meetings are conducted.

The draft review, which was made public last week, indicates questions will be capped at three per person and question time will not exceed an hour.

Protection for everyone Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection, spread by contact with fluids from coughs and sneezes.

Typically, Australia's annual flu season occurs between April and October.

For the best possible protection this year, my advice to all Victorians is to be vaccinated anytime from mid-April onwards.

This should ensure they are protected by the time the disease begins to spread more widely in the community.

The record number of flu notifications last year in Victoria alone is a timely reminder about the importance of vaccination.

There were more than 48,000 cases and, tragically, a number of deaths were reported.

This year we expect to make more than one million doses of vaccine available.

providing free immunisation to babies and children from six months to under five years of age.

Two doses are required for those receiving the vaccine for the first time.

Our seniors will also be protected, with all Victorians over 65 eligible for a free flu vaccine.

Everyone aged 65 and over will receive a specially formulated vaccine that triggers a stronger immune response and give increased protection.

Our message this winter is simple: "You

never forget the flu - don't forget your flu shot."

Flu vaccinations save lives.

When more people are vaccinated, fewer people become ill or suffer life-threatening complications from influenza.

The flu is not like a cold.

Symptoms last on average one to two weeks but for some it takes several weeks to recover.

It kills more than 3500 Australians each year.

Some of us are more vulnerable to complications - the over 65s, pregnant women, children under five, people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Also, those with chronic conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes, chronic neurological conditions and smokers should all be immunised.

All these groups were among those who were affected by flu last year.

And remember, we all have the potential to spread flu to these at risk groups.

Do what you can to avoid getting and sharing the flu - wash your hands thoroughly, cough into your elbow and get a shot in the arm.

If you're really sick, stay away from work and other places where you'll spread the flu.

And don't send ill children to school - they can sometimes be the 'super-spreaders' of diseases such as influenza.

Influenza vaccine will be available from general practitioners.

Many of our pharmacies are also able to provide flu vaccines as well as advice about the disease.

Everyone needs to prepare for the coming flu season.

Gateway: it’s gone for good

By Casey Neill Dandenong's Gateway Industries is no more, 30 years after opening its doors to support adults with disabilities.

The disability enterprise merged with Waverley Industries following financial struggles.

The Journal reported last September that its second-biggest customer, the City of Casey, had ended its eight-year relationship and created a $180,000 shortfall.

Waverley has found jobs for all 54 Gateway employees with disabilities.

Support staff, including CEO Alan Warwick, finished up on Monday 14 May. "It is sad but what we set out to achieve is getting all the employees a job and that's what we got through Waverley," Mr Warwick said.

"They're all taken care of.

"We looked at a few different companies.

"Waverley matched up the best.

"It's like anything, there's been good and bad out of it.

"There's only two of the staff that have gone on over with them.

"The rest of us have all retired or gone on to something else."

In a statement, Waverley Industries CEO Frank Cresia said the merger would create opportunities for business growth, innovation and diversification across Greater Dandenong, Casey, Cardinia and Monash.

He said both organisations shared the same vision to provide a long-term commitment to employment and training opportunities.

Gateway started more than 30 years ago as a Rotary Club of Dandenong initiative.

It employed more than workers with disabilities, most hailing from Hallam, Doveton, Dandenong and Keysborough but some traveling from Frankston, Cranbourne and Cockatoo.

Their roles included gardening, maintenance, woodwork, and processing and packaging.

Gateway Industries provided street furniture cleaning and litter pick-up services to Greater Dandenong Council for more than 25 years.

Workers told the Journal that Gateway had provided them with purpose.

The Journal will report more details on the merger in the coming weeks.

Decor move’s just Dandy Homewares brand Decor has set up in Dandenong South.

The business moved from the Scoresby site it set up nearly 40 years ago, into a newly-renovated space that combines manufacturing, warehousing and head office.

Fifty people work at the EJ Court address.

Decor produces more than 20 million products each year and invests in product design and innovation.

Managing director Anton McKernan said the company had consistent year-on-year growth and "is now fully focused on driving

huge opportunities both locally in Australia and expanding overseas".

He said this would include innovations within existing product ranges and expanding across new homewares categories.

Mr McKernan said the new space "will allow us the creative and logistical space to action our future growth plans".

Decor started in Melbourne in 1958 and today has more than 500 products in its range, including kitchenware, lunch and hydration, baby products and more.

A Women's Association South East Melbourne (WASEMA) contingent were invited to the Victorian. And proud of it. Senior's Mother's Day lunch.

They were among 100 guests at the Friday 11 May function at the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium.

The idea was to thank them for the contribution they've made to Victoria and to their community, and to celebrate the campaign messages of belonging and contribution.

Cash for MS cause Dandenong North's Rania Melhem raised more than $10,000 at her first charity dinner.

The Journal reported last week that the 28-year-old with multiple sclerosis was the face of the MS Home Lottery fund-raiser and was also hosting her own event for the cause.

Greater Dandenong Councillor Zaynoun Melhem, cousin to Rania's husband, told the Monday 14 May council meeting about her great results.

"Rania's a really inspiring young person in our community," he said.

Vale Lyn Woodman The community farewelled stalwart Lyn Woodman on Wednesday 16 May, filling two chapels at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Lyn and her husband Brian had spent their whole lives in Springvale and Noble Park.

Lyn was born at the Springvale Hospital and in recent years they had both been a huge part of the Noble Park Community Centre and Keyzpark Calisthenics Club, along with their four children and nine grandchildren.

Rubbish dumpers should face tougher penalties, says Greater Dandenong Council.

It’s advocating for increases in fines and more money to fight dumping in a bid to clean up its streets.

The Journal reached out to the council on the issue following a call from Dandenong resident Adam Kukic.

“People just don’t care,” he said.

“I’m just frustrated.

“There’s one pile of rubbish which I reckon has been there for more than three weeks.”

Mr Kukic said he was “ashamed” to see piles of rubbish on Clow Street while attending Dandenong’s Anzac Day march.

He said the problem was prevalent outside blocks of flats and put it down to people regularly moving in and out.

“I used to work at a tip. I understand that the fees are just ridiculous,” he said.

“But we do have one pick-up a year which people should utilise.”

Greater Dandenong Council’s engineering services director, Julie Reid, said dumped rubbish was a problem across metropolitan Melbourne and that local and state governments were working to address it.

She said high disposal costs and low penalties for doing the wrong thing were driving the behaviour.

“The City of Greater Dandenong is advocating, along with other metropolitan councils, for the use of the EPA levy, which is paid at landfill, to be reinvested in the fight against rubbish dumping,” she said.

“We are also advocating for the introduction of higher penalties.”

Ms Reid said the council had put a number of initiatives in place to address dumped rubbish, including introducing a dedicated prop-

Almost 1000 cars attended a pop-up drivethrough recycling day in February, and the council will hold another at Greaves Reserve on Saturday 30 June.

“Council asks that all residents continue to report dumped rubbish, as this will assist in

targeting areas of the community that require education and will help local laws investigate the rubbish and find the people responsible for the dumping,” she said.

“Reporting also allows our ‘hot spots’ crew to attend and remove the rubbish as soon as possible if they cannot identify the person responsible for the dumping.”

Those who believed the recent political pronouncements about the Monash Freeway works being finished - ahead of time and ahead of budget - were in for a rude surprise late on Thursday night.

In a dreary drizzle, the Monash was one long works zone.

It was a mission impossible to keep up with the wildly varying speed zones, with 40, 60, 80 and 100 all represented ... and not much idea of when you were changing from one to the other.

If that’s a finished road, I’d hate to see one still under construction.

It just seems to be part of the political trend to over-promise and under-deliver. The powers that be just can’t seem to see how much these own goals harm their brand.

In our newsroom, this even sparked a debate around whether the word “finished“ had escaped the Premier’s mouth - a sure sign that some fine hairs were being split.

We simply can’t continue to build this house while we’re living in it.

Please, please, please - for all our sakes - let's just give the Monash, drivers and workers a little bit of a rest. We've all earned it.

The Premier recently thanked the people for their patience during the Monash works. It’s time to back those words with action. We’ve earned a little reprieve, however small.

Taking care of business A gifted Dandenong student will study at the United States' most prestigious entrepreneurship college.

Shang Zhao will start classes at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts on 28 October.

The school accepted only 24 per cent of applicants to its 2018 admission round.

"From when I was young my parents have told me the schools in the United States were the best, so I always had that in the back of my mind," he said.

"When I applied to Babson, I wanted to focus on technology.

"But, at the end of the day, I will most likely

just grab any opportunity I can see."

Mr Zhao graduated from Nossal High School last year and pursued his goal to study abroad with help from tutors and strategists at academic mentoring company Crimson Education.

In his Babson application essay, he wrote about his family's experience as immigrants from China and his father's wish for a better life for his son.

"I wrote about how my dad wanted me to not become like him because he needs to work really hard in his small business," Shang said.

"My dad did three years of university in Australia as an international student, but that

didn't position him in a professional job - although he scored very highly.

"He had to start his own business to show that he was capable, and he did support our family.

"He really wanted me to get a good education in a top US university so that I would not have to go through what he did - but, instead, start at a high position."

Noble Park's French Street will soon be home to six new homes.

Greater Dandenong Councillors approved an application for 47 French Street at their Monday 14 May meeting.

Tribeca Group will build five double-storey dwellings to the front and one single storey house to the rear.

The council received one objection to the application with three signatures.

Concerns raised related to overdevelopment, property values, neighbourhood character, noise, overshadowing, loss of privacy, loss of amenity, parking, traffic and fencing.

A council report found the proposal appropriately responded to the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme.

Hyatt hotel for Springvale Hyatt plans to open a 200-key hotel in the heart of Springvale.

The international chain said PE Capital would develop the hotel at Springvale and Dandenong roads and it was expected to open in 2020.

Hyatt's Asia Pacific group president David Udell said this would be the tenth Hyattbranded hotel in Australia.

The development will include retail stores and other facilities.

PE Capital's Martyn Barnes said the complex would offer unique business and leisure experience for local and international guests.

A jazz win to trumpet about Keysborough students took home first prize from a national jazz competition.

The stage band from Killester College started rehearsing for the weekend-long Generations in Jazz stage band competition last November.

Jazz trumpeter James Morrison has been running the event for 30 years and this year took it to Mt Gambier, South Australia.

The Killester band conductor, teacher Bernie Hickey, said he’d taken a band to the competition 25 years ago and 300 students took part. That number is now more than 5000.

This was the first time Killester had entered such a competition, and the school placed first in its division.

Principal Leanne Di Stefano attended the weekend. “The girls are really starting to realise how big the world of music is and how much fun it is to participate at such a high level,” she said.

“We are all very proud of their efforts.”

Brooke's back in the running

From Granny, Dandenong Oasis YMCA and Food Safety Labels were unveiled as nominees for the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards at a breakfast at Punthill Apartment Hotel Dandenong on Friday 18 May. Ms Kuzovova travelled to Russia, China and Malaysia to see how other dumpling factories ran, and the equipment used before setting up in Swift Way. The manufacturer sells to delicatessens, health food stores and artisan retailers in Victoria and interstate, and exports 2000kg per month to New Zealand.

It has 17 lines of wheat flower dumplings and five gluten-free varieties.

Ms Kuzovova was shocked when told to highlight the natural ingredients in their dumplings, and that other companies used fillers to make a profit.

"I didn't think that people would actually do that," she said.

"I didn't think it was important to put those labels on our boxes."

From Granny employs five staff, including mums Ms Kuzovova met through her child's school who were new to Australia.

"They really appreciate that they can have a job," she said.

"They're rally bored sitting at home but can't make the first move."

YMCA manages the Dandenong Oasis on behalf of the City of Greater Dandenong.

"We often see people dive in the deep end and they don't realise danger they're in," she said.

"For us it's about how do we educate, how do we find opportunities for them to learn?"

Oasis runs swimming programs that target CALD communities, trains people from different cultural backgrounds in life saving, and fund-raises so it can subsidise centre access for people in need.

Food Safety Labels in Noble Park started as a sideline to director and owner Orkun Bayhan's other company, Ausbag.

Five years ago he saw an opportunity to manufacture and supply food rotation labels.

It started with day dot stickers to place on food in hospitals, aged care facilities, schools and day care centres.

Account manager Leanne Heathcote said the labels were increasingly part of most commercial kitchens.

"They're dots you put onto unused portions of food," she said.

"You don't end up with wastage and you don't food poison your customers."

Ms Heathcote said 17 per cent of Australians had at least one food allergy.

"It's all about colour-coding as well," she said.

"It's the easiest way to go about not injuring people in your restaurants."

Food Safety Labels has customers nationwide.

"We are growing every day," Ms Heathcote said.

"We've seen 100 per cent growth in past 12 months.

"My goal would be every kitchen is using food safety labels within the next 12 months to two years."

Treasurer talks trade and Team 11

By Casey Neill An optional Year 13 at secondary schools is Treasurer Tim Pallas's favourite part of the 2018-'19 State Budget.

He was the guest speaker at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce's business awards breakfast at Punthill Apartment Hotel Dandenong on Friday 18 May. "I am the treasurer who's delivered the highest surpluses in the history of the state of Victoria," Mr Pallas said.

He spoke about various projects that would impact the South-East, including funding to continue widening the Monash Freeway, upgrade the Mordialloc Bypass, and support mental health, education, police and family violence.

"We're going to give students the opportunity to learn their trade at school," Mr Pallas said.

The additional year will be available at 100 participating secondary schools, which are yet

"We expect to see kids come out of school with a starting salary between 38,000 and 52,000 a year," he said.

He said this would be an incentive for students to keep studying and earn a qualification

Former Greater Dandenong Councillor Naim Melhem asked if there was any support for the Team 11 project, a push for an A-League soccer team for the South-East, hidden in the budget's fine print.

Mr Pallas said there wasn't, but "I know you've been doing a fair bit of lobbying".

"The Premier has already raised this issue with me so you've obviously been at him as well," he said.

"I can't tell you where we're going to land on it, because that's not the job of the treasurer.

"My job is just to add up the numbers.

"But you've got some very substantial supporters within the government."

Mr Pallas was also full of praise for Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams.

"Gabrielle is a force of nature," he said.

"When she has a cause to pursue she does it with enormous vigour."

Brooke Fernandez is an impressive student.

Chisholm Institute's Lisa Moore presented Brooke as the Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards breakfast at Punthill Apartment Hotel Dandenong on Friday 18 May. "She's impressed the team, she's impressed me and she's certainly impressed Chisholm," she said.

Brooke then proceeded to impress the breakfast attendees.

"From a young age, drawing has always been a passion of mine and an integral part of my life," she said.

"I have always been making the most of my ability to design and create.

"I feel that many of my talents lie within the field of communications and I am pursuing this passion."

She's been learning how to best combine her technical skills with her creative thinking through a Bachelor of Design, which she'll finish in August.

Since 2014 she's completed a certificate four and diploma of graphic design, a certificate four in screen and media, and an interior design and decoration short course.

"This broad approach to developing my technical expertise will help me to adapt to the many needs required by the creative industry," she said.

"The design industry in Australia, like anywhere else in the world, is now part of the digital age where everything is fluid and constantly changing."

Brooke is engaged in an internship with Chisholm Institute student services where she is producing a three-minute careers animation on employability skills.

"My internship has also led to working with Chisholm as a casual student services officer," she said.

"I was hired because I showed great potential throughout the past seven months, and I am mainly involved in projects around communications.

"This enables me to develop my skills in a professional environment."

Brooke was also a nominee for the award back in August 2016.

At the time, teacher Robin Griffiths revealed that Brooke had a hearing impairment.

"She told me at the end of the first class she needs to look me in the face because she lip reads," he said.

But he's prone to wandering as he speaks so Brooke stood up and followed him.

"She really made a difference to me in the way I treat students and being mindful of others," he said.

"I have no doubt Brooke will make a difference in her career no matter what path she takes.

"Brooke's going to be one of those people that's going to be able to engage an audience and communicate a message."

The first Australian Idol winner will perform two shows at the Drum Theatre with his band in June.

The visit is part of his Then and Now regional tour, which will feature songs from his 15year career and a sneak peek of his new album ahead of its release.

"I've spent a lot of time writing new material and preparing a new body of work that really excites me, and I can't wait to share it soon," Sebastian said.

"One of my favourite things to do is per-

form live and I'm excited to bring my music to fans who live more remotely and get back to some amazing locations across Australia."

Aussie-born, Chicago-based singer Fatai will support Sebastian on the tour.

She sang with him on his song Lightning and his Eurovision 2015 song, Tonight Again.

Sebastian was crowned the first Australian Idol in 2003 and went on to become the only Australian male artist to achieve six number one singles and two number one albums.

His new self-titled album is due for release on Friday 9 March. It's his first solo album in nine years and his first of all original material in 22 years.

"It's a little overdue," he said.

Moss co-wrote every song on the album aside from My Suffering, a song written by his

Cold Chisel bandmate and friend Steve Prestwich, who died in 2011.

"It means a lot to me that there's a little bit of Steve on this album," he said.

"I can't wait for people to hear this record.

I'm really proud of it."

Young and old roll in

By Casey Neill Players of all ages are putting their skills to the test at Keysborough Bowls Club.

President Karen Brodie said the club's oldest player, Ray Woods, was 100 years old.

"Ray's brought a couple of people along and asked me to teach them and they've been in their eighties and nineties," she said.

"My four-year-old granddaughter comes along.

"It doesn't matter if you're good at it or you're not, you just have a laugh and enjoy it.

"We encourage as many people as possible to give it a go."

On Tuesday 15 May, the club welcomed Greater Dandenong Councillor Roz Blades and Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus to try their hand at indoor bowls.

Ms Brodie explained that the club received a $4500 Federal Government grant for new tournament mats through Mr Dreyfus, which the club matched.

"We play in the Australian nationals. It's good to have the mats to practice on," she said.

She said the indoor game was very similar to the outdoor equivalent.

It's played on carpet 30 feet long by six feet wide.

"The bowls are all one size. You've just got to keep the bowl on the mat and get it as close to the white kitty as you can," Ms Brodie said.

"You don't have to throw it like you do outdoors. "You don't have to worry about the rain." Ms Brodie has played bowls for about 23 years.

"I've played in 10 nationals and won nine medals," she said.

She has several family members involved in the sport, including some who've represented Australia.

From Noble Park to Osaka Two Noble Park Aquatic Centre workers are heading to Japan.

YMCA Victoria is sending 12 young staff and volunteers to intern with other young people from across the globe.

NPAC operations recreation officer Lochlan Norton and swim teacher and customer service officer Ebony Rose Huygens were among this year's intake. The lifelong Greater Dandenong residents will head to YMCA Oaska for about two months between June and September. Mr Norton has worked at NPAC since January 2015 and will be a Global Youth Conference facilitator during his trip.

Ms Huygens joined the NPAC team in October 2015 and will fill one of four Osaka YMCA International School (OYIS) swim instructor and teaching assistant positions.

NPAC manager Ansie Uys said the personal development opportunity for the pair was exciting and well-deserved.

"The international internship program offers young people a unique opportunity to work in Japan and experience its fascinating culture," she said. "It also challenges them to live and work together to achieve common goals. "Ebony Rose and Lochlan are great examples of the emerging leaders in the Dandenong community and I'm thrilled that the YMCA has provided this wonderful opportunity for them."

The Burras are flying high

By Hayley Wildes There's no doubt that Keysborough is firmly focused on season 2018 - their unbeaten start is a testament to that - but the disappointment of last year's preliminary final loss still burns and is driving the Burras to new heights.

"I think it has [driven the group]." Coach Matthew Ferguson said.

"It's not just that, but the club hasn't won a senior premiership for 42 years, so there's certainly a lot of driving factors, but definitely that preliminary final loss still burns pretty deep."

With motivation to improve over the offseason, the Burras went to work and signed some key players that are proving their worth.

Damian Collins (Narre Warren), Matthew Carnelley (Forest Hill), James Anwyl and Aaron McIlroy (Mt Eliza) are all new to the club in 2018 and they've also integrated under-19s, along with the returns of Michael Downie and Dylan Carlsson - who both missed the entirety of 2017.

With the added star power and depth, Keysborough put in a big pre-season and it is paying dividends.

"We've certainly stepped up our fitness dramatically from last season." Ferguson said.

"The previous season we were coming off a pretty poor year and it was probably more about getting numbers back and so forth, whereas this year is more about building on what we were able to achieve last year."

Despite that heartbreaking preliminary final loss, in which Keysborough was leading by nine points at the final change only to be overrun by Murrumbeena, 2017 was a massive step forward for the club.

And they want to build on that at the pointy end of 2018. "[The premiership] is absolutely the goal."

Ferguson said.

"I think obviously the first aim is to earn our finals spot, which we haven't done yet - that's the first step - and then from there we want to finish as high as we possibly can to give our-

"I guess when you're leading a preliminary final in the last quarter, the next year you're certainly looking to improve and that improvement would be to make the grand final."

"We definitely want to be if not the highest, certainly in the top three, for scoring. A real focus of ours was to improve our scoring power and we've recruited around that - it's something we're continually working on." Ferguson said.

A new coach in a new era for Dandenong cricket The Dandenong Cricket Club have announced the appointment of Andrew Christie as Women's head coach for the 2018/19 season.

Andrew comes across from East Doncaster Cricket Club where he has filled the role of coach since 2016. The accredited representative cricket coach also brings experience from time coaching the Outer East Eagles in the Cricket Victoria Pathway and the Melbourne University CC Academy.

However, it is perhaps Andrew's experience outside of cricket that most excites those at the Shepley.

"We believe our women's teams have a very exciting future ahead and Andrew provides a diverse range of skills and experience that

perfectly equip him to lead that future," said president Michael Findlay.

"Experience working with State and National Institutes of Sport, all-abilities and indigenous programs, schools, male and female teams as well as his own experience as an athlete through both cricket and cycling; Andrew brings a lot to the table."

For Dandenong, they believe it is a package that will provide what is needed for both team and individual success.

"There is no doubt that we are out to win games and improve on last year's results," said Findlay, "However, it is just as important for us to see everyone at our club reaching their potential, and that means seeing Panthers grant-

ed higher honours. Andrew has the experience working with elite athletes, and as an athlete himself, to show what that takes and help our players get to the next level".

It is certainly an impressive resume for a coach yet to reach his 30th birthday, but Findlay believes Christie's youth is part of the appeal and complemented by a mature head.

"We so often talk about cricket being a game played above the shoulders and Andrew is mature beyond his years. He brings a calmness, clarity and empathetic outlook that are great credits to him but his achievements also show that he balances this with discipline and drive. These are all qualities that we believe will allow him to connect with the players and

instill a similar ethos in them."

As for Andrew, he is looking forward to immersing himself in a club that is riding a great wave of momentum, and continue to build on a culture that is obviously heading in the right direction.

"I'm looking forward to meeting with the leaders of the club, and of course players, to get a deeper insight into what being a Panther is all about. My philosophy as a coach is to provide a platform for players and athletes to succeed in both sport and life which is directly in line with what the club as a whole are trying to achieve, so I am very excited to be a part of that."

By Mick Floyd Tornado Tears showed why he is regarded one of the most exciting stayers of his generation with a dazzling display in a heat of the RSN Sandown Cup on Thursday night.

Tornado Tears entered the night as the $2.50 favourite to win the final of world’s richest race stayers and quickly showed why.

In the most eagerly anticipated heat of the night - billed as a two dog battle between litter mates Tornado Tears and Rippin’ Sam - Tornado Tears found the early lead and made the race his own.

Railing strongly to lead through the first turn, he quickly established a four length break with a lap to go.

Known as ‘Batman’ due to his distinctive markings , Tornado Tears continued to increase his lead while carving out stunning sectionals before stopping the clock in 41.297 seconds - the fourth fastest time ever run over

the trip.

“He’s almost the perfect stayer,” said handler Peter Riley, six years to the day after champion Miata set the time standard of 41.17. “(He’s got) early speed, (and) finishes it off you can’t ask for any more.

“I reckon with the right conditions he might give the record a nudge.”

Rippin’ Sam, a Group winner considered by many as the best stayer in the country, will also take his place in the $250,000 final this Thursday after charging home late to finish second, nearly six lengths adrift.

Remarkably, it was just Tornado Tears’ second start over the distance.

His first came four weeks prior and went within a half a length of Miata’s long standing record and that run took the white and black chaser some time to recover.

It was a memorable night on Thursday for his trainer Robert Britton, who won three of the four RSN Sandown Cup heats.

The Dandenong Stingrays have again showcased their class and depth in a first versus second showdown against the Murray Bushrangers at RAMS Arena on Saturday.

In what shaped as the game of the round, the contest absolutely lived up to the hype in a high-scoring affair.

It was an even first quarter as neither side was able to break the game open. The Stingrays had their chances, but squandered some opportunities to get off to a strong start.

After one quarter it was the Rays leading 2.3 (15) to 2.0 (12). Both sides were cracking in at the contest and the back and forth action showcased why these two teams were at the top of the ladder.

The second quarter was when the Rays made their move and through the likes of Bailey Williams, Sam Fletcher and Corey Ellison up forward, Dandenong took control of the game.

Despite their dominant quarter, the Rays were again wasteful in front of goal. Their 22-point half time lead should’ve been closer to 40 points had they finished off their good work. The Bushrangers’ straight kicking, 5.0 (30), was keeping them in the contest as the Rays had more than three times as many scoring shots; 7.10 (52).

An arm-wrestle took place in the third quarter as the stars for both teams got heavily involved. Hudson Garoni (seven goals), Ben Kelly and Laitham Vandermeer stepped up for the Rangers, while Zac Foot, Matthew Cottrell and Jai Taylor started to get busy for the Rays.

A 16-point Dandenong lead with a quarter to go had the match set up for a thrilling final quarter. A shootout ensued in the fourth. Excellent ball movement and forward half teamwork was on display from both teams.

The new Holden Commodore, not surprisingly with its German origins, has taken on a more European look.

Good to go the distance

By Derek Ogden For close on 40 years, the Holden Commodore, together with sibling Calais, were large sedans and station wagons capable of carting a family and its gear over long distances in comfort, while making good time.

So now, how does the European-sourced, Australian-revised, replacement compare with the traditional Aussie-built icon?

What better way to find out than by taking a family trip from the Gold Coast to Sydney and back? We were blessed with a Commodore RS-V V6 AWD Liftback for our big trip.

Approaching the vehicle from all angles, Commodore offers a range of restrained decorative treatments to the sleek, yet substantial, European sports body kit with rear lip spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, it’s much the same with soft-touch surroundings, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with paddles, alloy pedals, leatherappointed trim, heated sports front seats, ambient lighting and DAB+ digital radio.

Holden, as an early adapter of in-car infotainment with its MyLink system. New Commodore has a 8-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen display.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection, plus full iPod integration, includ-

ing Siri, have kept up with trends.

Even more so now with colour head-up windscreen display and wireless smartphone charging via a centre console unit.

However, the embedded satellite navigation system is lagging behind information on the upgrading of the Pacific Highway. It kept giving us directions to turn left or right onto now superseded roads. With the arrow representing the Commodore on the screen, ploughing on through paddocks and bushland. Not a beast in sight…

Based on the German made Opel Insignia, the new Holden Commodore comes to the Australian market in two- and all-wheel drive with petrol, turbo-petrol or diesel power.

Our test Commodore RS-V was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine mated with a new nine-speed automatic transmission and allwheel drive.

Auto emergency braking had the windscreen head-up display lighting up and beeping with a warning of another vehicle too close in front, while lane keeping assist gently corrected the steering on any sign of wandering.

The 360-degree / surround-view cameras were a bonus when parking in tight spots, as was rear cross-traffic alert on reversing out from between obstacles. Finally, the seven-

year unlimited kilometre warranty will outlast many a trip up and down the Australian east coast.

The Australian Commodore and Calais package is down to Holden engineers covering more than 200,000 kilometres of testing the drivetrain and suspension on Australian roads and at the Lang Lang proving ground.

Pushing the dash-mounted engine start/ stop button unleashes 235 kW and 381 Nm with a note rising to a rorty crescendo.

Performance off the mark was all-but instantaneous, while overtaking, even on narrow roads was quick and easy, courtesy of adaptive all-wheel drive with electric limited-slip differential.

Official combined urban / highway fuel consumption is 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres on regular 91 RON unleaded, which compares with 10.2 (town) and 7.6 (highway) respectively for the test vehicle.

The big boot, 490 litres takes two big suitcases, plus the smaller luggage with room to spare.

Storage in the passenger cabin runs to a deep centre-console bin and generous door pockets for bits and pieces.

Comfort for the average height is good but could be challenging for a taller person. Leg

room in the rear is adequate without being generous. Even with the presence of leather, there’s a feeling of the ordinary all round.

Nothing stands out, it’s bland.

The Commodore RS-V shows the way with automotive technology for less than $50,000.

European rivals with the same specs would be priced well above. Pity about the sat nav.
