Running from 20 - 26 May, Education Week 2018 is all about celebrating the arts and is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, and early childhood services to showcase the work they are doing for students in arts subjects including dance, drama, music, visual arts and media arts.

Celebrating the arts reflects the State Government’s target of ’Learning for Life’, which aims to improve learning outcomes for every child, in every classroom, in every community to provide the best chance of success in work, and in life.

The Department of Education and Training website has a number of tips for ways parents can support their child's learning.

Helping your child with homework is a great way to get involved in your child’s education. Your child’s teacher will usually tell you about homework at the start of the year and give you a copy of the homework policy.

The homework set for your child will vary depending on their age, the subject and the school’s approach to homework. The degree of difficulty and length of homework will also be set according to their age and ability.

Homework will become more challenging in secondary school, in particular during the final years.

Practice exercises give your child opportunities to apply new knowledge, or to review and reinforce recently learned skills.

Casey Grammar School was founded in 1994 by an interim committee which aimed to create a Christian school who strived for excellence in education.

You can say g’day in Hindi Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews visited Rangebank Primary recently to say ‘G'day’ to delegates from Bluebells School in Delhi, India, and learn more about the Rangebank's innovative Hindi program.

Rangebank principal Colin Avery welcomed Mr Andrews to the school. A discussion developed about how the two schools began their strong relationship.

Seven students and a teacher from Bluebells were guests of the school.

Rangebank students Skype with Bluebells students almost weekly, discussing a range of topics.

Mr Andrews answered questions about his recent trip to India, what he saw and what he tasted.

He said he enjoyed the experience immensely but was surprised at the traffic.

Rangebank students who had visited Bluebells told the Premier of their experience.

The Lyndhurst Academy will allow students to collaborate across year levels.

Individual’s choices rule At Lyndhurst Secondary College staff are firm believers that young people must have the opportunity to explore their individual passions and talents.

Principal Kondilo Prades said that in doing so they become vibrant and engaged learners, who feel connected and supported by their school.

"From next year, students will have the opportunity to do just that, through our exciting new program, The Lyndhurst Academy," Ms Prades said.

Students from Years 7-10 will all spend one afternoon per week participating in the Lyndhurst Academy, which Ms Prades describes as "a fantastic new program that provides students with the opportunity to collaborate across the year levels in an area of their choosing.

"Individual academies will be formed with students from across the year levels, who will be asked to work as a team to develop creative, communication and critical thinking skills, within their chosen field."

Academies will explore such diverse options as coding, cooking / baking, sports (rugby, volleyball, soccer and basketball), performing arts, woodworking, fashion design and literature.

As a part of the program, students will also forge connections with local community organisations, including primary schools, sporting clubs and community groups.

Mr Andrews launched his government's ‘India Strategy’ in Melbourne in January and then flew to Delhi to launch further elements of the plan.

During his time in India Mr Andrews visited Bluebells where he ‘Skyped’ with Rangebank students.

It was during this time that the Premier made a promise to meet with the students of both schools when the delegates from India visited.

Mr Avery said Rangebank Primary was unique in that it was the first school to introduce Hindi as its foreign language. Today, there are now approximately seven schools around Australia that teach Hindi, with one other in Victoria and a third school hoping to introduce Hindi in 2019.

"Multi-culturalism is a practised element of school life at Rangebank, where acceptance not tolerance is key," Mr Avery said.

Growing as the community grows This year Alkira Secondary College celebrates 10 years of education and service within the local community.

Principal John Shaw recently reflected on the changes the school has seen over the past decade.

"Starting with 98 students onsite at Hillsmeade Primary School in 2009, we could only imagine what our school and community would look like in ten years," Mr Shaw said.

"Very few appreciated that Cranbourne North would become one of the fastest growing suburbs in the state. Emerging estates, business centres and the newly created suburbs of Clyde North and Cranbourne East now surround Alkira.

"Tulliallan Primary school was built and this year we welcomed their first graduates."

Alkira Secondary College now has 1230 students and over 100 staff.

"Partnerships with Melbourne and Federation Universities and the emerging Casey Technical School help us to deliver high-quality programs to complement our curriculum," Mr Shaw explained.

"We now have networks and interaction with schools and institutions across South East Asia."

Mr Shaw said that the school community's proudest achievement over the last ten years was evident in their vision, 'securing the entitlements of all children.'

Australian-first for kinders Greater Dandenong and Casey kinders will be among the first in the state to get cash to access experts.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced on Friday 27 April that they would join 23 local government areas to share $58.1 million worth of school readiness funding.

The Australian-first program will fund access to experts and innovative programs.

All kinders operated by an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in Victoria will also be able to access the funding.

"This Australian-first initiative is about ensuring no child is left behind - and that those who need extra help will get it," Early Childhood Education Minister Jenny Mikakos said.

"Not every child has an equal chance to thrive at kindergarten and school readiness funding will mean that more kids will be ready for school and ready for life."

One in five Victorian children start school developmentally vulnerable, according to the 2015 Australian Early Development Census, and those who start behind tend to stay behind.

The funding will allow kinders to tap into language and literacy professionals, speech therapists and child psychologists.

They'll be brought in to work directly with children at kindergartens and build the capability of parents and educators.

"We want all Dandenong kids to start school on equal footing, if they need extra help through a speech therapist, or a literacy expert, this funding will provide that," Ms Williams said.

It's the first time school readiness funding has been made available to kindergartens.

St Therese’s looks to a tech future With current trends showing significant increases in the need for STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) based skills, staff at St Therese’s Primary School are ensuring their students are not left behind.

Earlier this year an array of robotic equipment was purchased with additional funds being committed to the further improvement of the school’s Technical Hub. STEM education encourages the development of critical and creative thinking and problem-solving while exploring the relationships between the four disciplines.

While inquiry learning and information technology and communications have been a staple in the school’s curriculum for some time, coding and robotics have been added in the past few years.

“We recognise the role STEM skills play in our rapidly changing world and our staff have embraced the new curriculum additions,” Head of St Therese’s technology team Mr Carlos Sanchez said.

“Students love being hands-on in their learning and there’s a real satisfaction for us as teachers in providing them with the skills they need to seek out answers to their own questions and theories. The students become more confident and trusting in their own abilities to learn, question and make decisions.”

“By giving the students control of a physical robotic ball they see what works and what can go wrong,” digital technologies teacher Mrs Rosie Osthmuller said.

“Students then come together as a whole

class to discuss their outcomes and the importance of precise instructions in coding.”

Parents must be diligent Cyberbullying is a deeply embedded problem in society, with one in five young people under the age of 18 reporting that they have experienced online bullying in any one year, but schools cannot solve the problem alone.

This is the view of Professor Marilyn Campbell, of the Queensland University of Technology, a world-expert on cyberbullying.

Professor Campbell has recently published Reducing Cyberbullying in Schools, which focuses on international evidenced-based strategies for preventing cyberbullying, including tips for parents.

Professor Campbell spent two decades as a teacher, before becoming a registered psychologist and then moving into educational research. And she says that to help address cyberbullying, we need to be looking outside the school yard and into the home.

“While schools obviously have a role to play, we need to ensure parents are playing an active role in dealing with cyberbullying.

“Most cyberbullying is initiated outside of the school, so we need to make sure parents know how to respond – whether their child is being bullied or, in fact, is the bully.”

Often, the policing of cyberbullying is seen as an area for schools and teachers to manage, but Professor Campbell says that parents shouldn’t pass on the responsibility for seeing that their children are safe in digital environments.

“Parents are their children’s first teachers, and they are the people supplying their children with the technology,” says Professor Campbell. “Both of those factors add up to parents having a very important role to play – they can’t just say ‘This is something for schools to deal with,’ and wash their hands of it.”

Students so sustainable Sustainability is the focus of many schools these days with students encouraged to pack nude lunches and be energy busters.

How can parents help encourage their kids to be sustainable students?

Here are 10 tips from Sustainability Victoria: 1. Lunches - get the kids to make their own lunch and use containers suited to nude food which eliminates the need for plastic or aluminium foil wrapping. If you do need to wrap, reusable beeswax wraps be used instead of plastic. Find out about them online or do a course on making them at your local neighborhood house or community arts centre.

Water bottles can be frozen to keep lunches fresh in summer. Some people use a thermos as a year-round way to keep liquids (like drinks and yogurt which you can decant from a larger container) at a constant temperature. Encourage your students to use the school’s compost bins or bring home their scraps for yours.

2. Make you own snacks Despite what they say, many kids have plenty of time on their hands. Teach them to make their own muesli bars and other snacks. Be patient. It’s a life skill.

3. Get more value. Use the Love Food Hate Waste website to get great recipes to use last night’s leftovers in exciting ways for school (and work) lunches.

4. Mmmm coffee… If your teenagers are in the habit of buying a cuppa before or after school, a ‘keep cup’ is a good investment.

5. Save money by digging out pens, pencils and other consumables from drawers, cupboards and bags rather than buying new ones.

Many stationery makers have a range of notebooks made from recycled paper. Greencollect at Braybrook sells recycled stationery and other excess office supplies from businesses.

Riding to school is a great way to stay fit and be sustainable.

6. Textbooks and uniforms. Most schools have second-hand book and uniform shops, but your local op shop is also worth trying.

Many high school English and literature books are available free on Kindle. For other subjects ask teachers what the difference is with this year’s version of a textbook compared with last year’s.

7. Music teachers can often bridge the gap between an instrument sitting unused on a

bedroom shelf and a student. You can often get a better-quality instrument this way, rather than paying more for new.

8. Walking or riding to school is a great way to stay fit. It saves fuel, reduces vehicle pollution and traffic jams at the school gate. Otherwise park a short distance from the school and walk with the kids and use it as an opportunity to teach road rules. Catching the bus is often an option, too.

9.Buying a desk, bookcase or filing cabinet?

Second-hand office furniture shops often have very modern goods at a much better price than new and they will last.

10.Ask your school to join the Resource Smart Schools program and Sustainability Victoria’s TAKE2 program. TAKE2 is about individuals, groups and organisations joining forces to set their own objectives and act to preserve the planet.

Strong partnerships Hampton Park Secondary College has a strong partnership with their feeder primary schools.

The college offers a sports mentoring program for students to umpire the interschool sports at primary schools.

Students umpire a variety of sports and work with all the grade 6 students. This program builds the confidence of student mentors to be leaders, as well as building a positive connection to Hampton Park students.

Shake salt from menus Heart Foundation figures show that typical “go-to” school lunchbox options such as the humble ham and cheese sandwich can deliver school kids more than half their entire recommended daily allowance of salt.

Dietitians at the Heart Foundation have analysed the average salt content of a range of go-to school lunchbox options and found that: A ham and cheese sandwich on white bread with butter can contain 3g of salt. This is 91 per cent of a four-to-eight year old’s recommended daily allowance of 3.5g of salt and well over half (61 per cent) of a 9-13 year old’s recommended daily allowance.

A cheese and vegemite sandwich on white bread with butter can contain 2g of salt. This is over half (57 per cent) of a four-to-eight year old’s recommended daily allowance and 40 per cent of the daily allowance for a 9-13 year old.

Heart Foundation Victoria CEO Kellie-Ann Jolly said parents needed to be aware that the fillings they put in sandwiches could contribute more salt than they realise to their children’s diets. But this didn’t mean they should cut out sandwiches as a lunchbox staple.

“There are many other healthy, low salt sandwich filling options,” Ms Jolly said.

“Why not try roasted chicken and avocado on multigrain bread? Or an egg and avocado sandwich? Both contain less than a gram of salt. Or a cheese and carrot sandwich on multigrain, which contains only 1.4 grams of salt.”

Recent research shows that two out of three Victorian schoolchildren are consuming 60 per cent more salt than is recommended every day, and more than half of that comes from “core” food groups, such as bread and cheese and breakfast cereals.

Mould infested classrooms; quarantined toilets, EPA notices, and asbestos fears have left parents fuming with the dilapidated state of Cranbourne South Primary School.

A lack of disability access to classrooms and a first-aid room has also forced students to relocate to a multi-purpose room riddled with asbestos - which has been marked for removal.

Cranbourne South Primary School Council President Jodi Price said the school community was up in arms about the lack of support from the Education Department and Training (DET).

She said the school’s only toilet block that caters for 379 students had to be quarantined in February this year, costing the school “astronomical electricity costs” to run cleaning equipment with no reimbursement in sight.

The toilets have since been refurbished and reopened this week.

Ms Price said “nothing further has been done” with an Accessibility Building Program Grant that was approved last November to install two disability ramps.

In the past 12 months, Victoria’s Environment Protection Agency issued the school with a pollution abatement notices, two amended abatement notices and a revocation notice, indicating high E-coli levels in their waste water treatment plant.

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera announced on Wednesday 16 May the State Government had committed $110,000 in upgrading and modernising Cranbourne South Primary School's ageing facilities, including fix old and damaged pipes.

Construction of new access ramps for two of the school’s relocatable buildings through the Accessible Buildings Program is expected to start soon and completed in the next eight to ten weeks, he said.

Mr Perera said work was already underway for $117,000 of maintenance funding to fix ageing toilets and remove damaged and dangerous trees.

Casey’s new schools set

By Brendan Rees The construction of three new world-class schools in Casey will be fast-tracked - with an expected completion date by the start of 2020, the State Government has announced.

Minister for Education James Merlino confirmed on 11 May that tenders were being sought for the construction of primary schools in Botanic Ridge, Casey Fields (Five Ways) and Clyde North East.

The Labor Government this week advertised for design and construct contractors to

submit an expression of interest to carry out design completion and documentation, procurement, construction, commissioning and defect rectification for eight new schools in the South East.

Last month Premier Daniel Andrews joined the Minister for Education James Merlino in making the announcement of the new schools in Casey at Clyde North's Wilandra Rise Primary School on 23 April - which forms part of a $353 million package in Victorian Budget to build schools in the state's fastest growing areas.

It's estimated that 90,000 students are expected to enter the school system in the state over the next five years.

Mr Merlino said the State Government was getting on with the job of building better schools, so local students have the facilities and classrooms they need to succeed.

"In contrast, in 2016 not one new school opened because the Liberals failed to plan for our growing state. We won't let that happen again," he said.

"We're not wasting a minute - with EOIs

now out and construction to follow, we're giving local families in our fastest growing areas certainty that they will soon have a great local school, close to home."

Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy said had the Government not scrapped the East West Link project at a cost of $1.3 billion, 40 news schools and 40 new police stations could've been purchased.

"If it was just schools, 77 new schools in our growth areas could've been built," he said.

Hard times spark art from the heart

By Brendan Rees Despite her personal hardships and challenges, Roxanne Baz is determined to remain unbroken.

The 28-year-old of Cranbourne North went through a dark period in her life during which she overdosed on drugs and passed out near a ceramic heater. By the time she woke up her arm had been burnt.

She barely survived the experience and had to have her arm amputated but it did force her to re-evaluate her life: she is now completely drug free and pursuing a place on the Paralympic Equestrian Team.

Today, Roxanne is participating in a unique and empowering body art/documentary project called ‘Unbroken’.

She is one of six Victorians who will reflect on their individual truth, resilience and purpose, in art and in life through the project which celebrates Australians who have found greater strength within themselves following personal hardship or challenge.

“I decided to do it because I wanted to help someone else who has gone through something similar,” Roxanne says.

“I started hanging out with the wrong people. My life fell apart and I ended up homeless.

“If I can show someone that it’s not really about what you look like, it’s about who you are as a person and what you can accomplish that’s what makes you beautiful.

“I think it will help in my recovery and hopefully help others,” she said.

In “Unbroken” the participants are docu-

mented and share their stories through the body painting process and their artistic expression.

The project is inspired by Kintsugi, a Japanese art form that uses gold to enhance broken ceramic in a way that accentuates the cracks, a symbol of the beauty to be found in imperfection and change.

Roxanne says she hopes to inspire people with the knowledge that there is always hope, and that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence.

“I’ve suffered a lot of body image problems my whole life,” says Roxanne. “I’m anxious but at the same time I feel like it’s not only going to give me strength but hopefully it will give other people strength.“

A new cafe in Cranbourne has been broken into by a brazen thief just six weeks after it opened.

The Amazing Grace owner Paul White said a male burglar broke into the South Gippsland Highway about 3.10am on Thursday, 10 May, where he allegedly helped himself to top-shelf whiskey, cases of beer, cash and power tools.

Mr White said he believed the intruder used a sledge hammer that was sitting outside the rear of the cafe to break into the kitchen door.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV cameras within the cafe.

"He's looked for cash and things of value.

He's taken our float drawers, the top shelf liquor, tip jars, electrical tools because I had a couple of drills out the back as well," he said.

Mr White said it "was a real kick in the teeth" after spending nearly three years of hard work refurbishing the building, which was once the St Agatha's Church.

"It's pretty bad, it's not on. This person has to be accountable for it."

Mr White said he had gone to open the cafe at 6.15am when he made the discovery that someone had smashed their way in, which has left a damage bill of close to $15,000.

"I reckon he's come in through the back through the funeral parlour, that's my guess," he said. "He'd probably be able to get through there easier without being noticed."

The man also jemmied opened cash floats, making away with more than $1000, he said.

"He's broken into office and ripped a couple of cameras off the wall and seen what else he could take," Mr White said.

He said while in the office the man has taken between $60 to $70 in cash from a safe.

"He's got the sledgehammer or something heavy because he couldn't get into the office.

He's then punched a hole through the plaster and then put his arm through the wall to open the door from the inside.

Mr White said the thief then used a delivery trolley to wheel out slabs of alcohol down Stawell Street about 4am.

The intruder wrecked various door jambs, causing about $4000 worth of damage, he added.

"It's just not a nice thing to happen in the first six weeks."

Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit are investigating and have been handed the CCTV. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

How long have you been a volunteer with Pearcedale fire brigade?

Almost 5 years.

What have been some of the major bush fires you have attended?

I haven't been able to get to faraway places much in the past due to needing to get kids to school and such, but I just recently went to Warrnambool to work in the Incident Control Centre for the Cobden fires. Closer to home, I've been at the Cranbourne and Carrum Downs Bush fires this year, and the Hastings, Somerville and Crib Point fires over the past couple of years.

What keeps you interested in firefighting?

The challenge, the variety, the CFA family. There's always something happening and there's always something new to learn, somewhere new to go, and someone new to meet.

I love it.

What is the most memorable moment in your life?

It might sound a little selfish, but at the moment it's the trip I did to Birdsville and the outback on my own last year. I had a ball and met some awesome people; visited some amazing places and it was so nice just doing whatever I wanted when I felt like it.

What is your favourite television show?

I'm not a big TV watcher these days and I'm more inclined to stick a movie on Netflix when I want to watch something. That means I've ended up watching some real duds, and other times I've come across an awesome movie that I'd never heard of.

6. Favourite place to visit in Victoria?

Hmm... Anything along the Great Ocean Road.

I like chilling out in the coastal towns, and

driving alongside that part of the ocean is just breathtaking.

What is your favourite book?

The Eight, by Katherine Neville. It's an awesome and intriguing story that I first read about 25 years ago. But I also have (I think) 82 Stephen King books so I kind of like him a little bit as well :) What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Fortunately, I don't think I really have too many of those as I'm usually the responsible one haha. But I must admit, when I was parking in South Yarra the other day, I managed to find out that my new four-wheel-drive with roof racks is over two metres, as I discovered when I hit the two metre clearance

What do you work toward in your free time?

At the moment, it's preparing for my outback trip again. I'm heading back to Birdsville with a friend in July, so I'm busy planning for outback camping for about three weeks. I've got a lot of things still to do on the four-wheel-drive and just organising everything I need to take is pretty time-consuming.

Where would your perfect holiday destination be?

Hamilton island! I've been there so many times and I absolutely love it. I've flown there, sailed there, ferried there ... each time I'm there it feels like a little home away from home. Just wish I could afford to go there every winter.

Council committed to ball

By Nick Creely The City of Casey will be the host of one of Australia's premier football facilities if Team 11 is granted entry into the A-League in the 2019/20 season.

Boys and girls from the south-east of Victoria will have a pathway to the professional ranks with the City of Casey committing up to $23.8 million to ensure Casey Fields has a training and administration base, which would house the region's very own A-League and W-League club.

Preparations are well and truly taking place at the Cranbourne East site, with the aim to have the facility ready to go by October 2019.

The first stage will include a $18 million community facility, boasting three synthetic pitches, a main turf pitch, and an eight-change room pavilion.

The City of Casey has pledged $13 million to stage one, dependant on a successful application to the Victorian Government's Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) Fund, which is nearing completion.

If successful, the turf pitch would be scheduled for completion by July 2019 and the synthetic pitches and pavilion due to be erected

Regardless of whether the region is granted an A-League licence, the community facility will be going ahead.

The second stage is predicated to the success of the Team 11's A-League bid, which would be the elite training facility hosting the men's, women's and junior academy sides.

The high-performance centre, which will be the rival of any professional sporting base in the country, is projected to cost $20.8 mil-

lion, with the City of Casey committed to matching dollar-for-dollar funding from either government or private sources.

An application has been made to the Australian Government's Regional Growth Fund, with a detailed design process currently underway.

City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said the funding announcement epitomised his council's determination to see Team 11's A-League and W-League bid succeed.

Councillor Ablett said the Casey Fields Regional Football Centre would be of benefit to the entire community, with accessibility from all corners of the south-east far greater than other current professional pathways.

"This elite standard facility is for the entire regions soccer community, to be shared by community clubs and schools, providing our kids with the best possible opportunity to become the next Socceroo and Matilda," Cr Ablett said.

"Football is booming in the south-east and we are struggling to cater for the demand.

"The only thing missing is an elite facility and an elite club to represent them and provide a tangible pathway to the highest ranks of the game.

"To house an A-League and W-League club

here will also further establish Casey Fields as the home of sport in the south-east of Victoria."

Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne said he supports the development of Casey Fields.

"The Team 11 concept is an exciting one for our region," Mr Byrne said.

"To have the club's elite training facility at Casey Fields will be of great value to the local community.

"School groups and local players will rub shoulders with the professionals, serving as further inspiration to emulate their path to the A-League, W-League, Socceroos and Matildas."

Former Socceroo and decorated national league goalkeeper Clint Bolton has also signed on as an ambassador for Team 11's A-League and W-League bid.

"It's a region that's largely untapped as far as professional sport goes. It's a large area, a lot of people and football is at the heart of it with a lot of different cultures and backgrounds represented," Bolton said.

The announcement comes off the back of Team 11's plans to build a stadium in the heart of Greater Dandenong.

Acid spills on road and firefighters clean up the mess

By Brendan Rees Emergency services were called to reports of a chemical spill on the South Gippsland Highway in Lynbrook on Wednesday, 9 May. Firefighters worked for two hours to clean up 80 litres of what was believed to be hydrochloric acid off the road.

Crews from Hampton Park and Hallam CFA fire brigades, and four appliances responded to the incident at 7.20am.

A spokesman for CFA said two drums containing 40 litres had falling off an unknown vehicle, with emergency services blocking the highway from Lynbrook Boulevard.

Hampton Park lieutenant Fabian Ruberto said the vehicle had left the scene prior to emergency crews arriving.

He said firefighters worked quickly in specialist chemical splash suits during peak hour traffic using a neutralising compound to render the chemical safe before it could be

cleaned up properly.

Police assisted with traffic management and ambulance crews also attended the scene as a precautionary measure.

No injuries were sustained and the spill was cleaned safely.

EPA was also notified.

Relay launch

By Brendan Rees For David Varidel, being a part of the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life has been truly inspirational.

The local resident, whose wife was diagnosed with a small but aggressive breast cancer, decided to join Relay for Life to fight back against cancer.

"Walking into the field was hard, I felt like an imposter because I'd not been physically touched by the cancer myself," he says. "But, boy was I wrong. The love, care and help provided by the relay volunteers was overwhelming, so I decided to join and see what I could do to help others," he said.

David is now encouraging all residents to come along to the launch of the CranbourneNarre Warren Relay For Life event next week.

The launch will enable Cranbourne and Narre Warren residents to learn more about the latest Relay For Life developments and to find out how they can support the fundraising event.

In six years, Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life has raised over $400,000 and the 2018 fundraising goal is set at $70,000.

Street without joy As an aside to Cam Lucadou-Wells' article on detritus on the freeway (Star News, 10 May, page 7) perhaps it could have included the increasingly damaged bollards positioned to stop motorists driving on lanes that now appear to be quite drive-able left for months strewn over and alongside the freeway.

Rather than spending more days off work than on, perhaps the clean-up crew/s could actually do their work more efficiently and productively as opposed to the sign erection teams that take great delight in the blocking off lanes for works being carried out some metres from the road and behind concrete barriers.

And while you slowly wind your way to work or shopping, spare a thought to the Vic Road/Fulton Hogan team that have now seen fit to have erected something like 60-plus full freeway coverage overhead gantries between Chadstone and Pakenham. At what cost and what desired outcome is anyone’s guess.

That does include several already positioned gantries (prior to the so-called road improvements designed to make it a safer and quicker journey) and several road flyovers used for signage and other VicRoads “initiatives“.

You might note that some are placed rather close together, especially around Rowville and Dandenong for reasons best known to the design team given that they appear to be for the same intended purpose.

I also note the “cheese cutter" damage that stays un-repaired and that they are now are a permanent part of the roadscape into and beyond Warragul, not only in the middle but on both sides of the freeway, effectively placing broken down and stopped vehicles and their humans at greater risk from “tail-enders“.

I wonder if Vic Roads bothered to evaluate the effect of a myriad of road side signage (much of which appears needless replication) on driving safety and the incidence of tail-end accidents?

I have a sneaking suspicion that our money at least in part could be better used on other infrastructure projects giving better bang for our dollars.

Rate rise warning

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A ratepayers group has urged Casey Council to not seek exemptions from rate-capping in future years.

The draft 2018-'19 council budget lifts rates within the 2.25 per cent cap but mayor Geoff Ablett foreshadowed hard decisions down the track.

Those hard decisions included either cutting services or seeking an exemption from the State Government's rate cap.

Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the group was against any move to increase rates above the cap.

"I'd like to see the council reducing expenses. It just requires better budgeting."

"All this rubbish about not having enough money for capital works two or three years down the track is a load of bulls***.

"They're just money-hungry."

Mr Talvik said he didn't have much issue with the $28 average increase in waste charges proposed by Casey in 2018-'19.

The council rose the levy after renegotiating its recycling waste contract with SKM Industries due to the China recycling import 'crisis'.

CRRA is preparing a submission on the draft budget, suggesting possible savings such as cuts to Casey's $123 million wages bill.

Cr Ablett recently said the rates cap was hurting growth councils such as Casey over the next decade.

"This year's budget is ... a window into the future in which the cumulative pinch of rate capping is clear.

"It represents a tipping point where the future will be characterised by the increasingly difficult job of bridging the gap between the infrastructure and services the community expect and what Council can afford to deliver."

With the help of State grants, the council still unveiled a $121.2 million capital works program for the coming financial year.

Brazen theft A Cranbourne man was robbed by a gang armed with a large metal torch while he was walking along a street in broad daylight in Doveton on Monday, 6 May. The 30-year-old victim was allegedly set upon by a group of men, described of African appearance, who had got out of a late model Toyota Corolla hatch in Green Street at about 1.30pm.

Detective Senior Constable Alison Johnson of the Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit said one of the men struck the victim repeatedly to the right side of his body with a 2030cm mag-torch.

The man suffered cuts and bruises to the right side of his body but did not seek medical attention. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Marathons mean freedom, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on your marks, get set...

By Brendan Rees One of the things Cristie Wilson loves about running is the freedom it brings, and the distance a person can go.

The Tooradin resident is currently training for a 23km half marathon event in the Great Ocean Road Running Festival on the weekend of the 19-20 May. "I love running because it's just me against myself, she says. "I can explore the world we live in, and see places others only dream about. I also love the comradery between people of all ages and abilities."

She is also the co-founder of a local women's only running group called Black Cap Runners (BcR) which is designed to encourage and empower other women to seek their personal bests with support from each other.

"We literally started with three women..... we now have close to 300 women from all walks of life and abilities. I try to train with

other BCR girls as much as possible."

"I'm running this event with a fellow BcR lady, to show her how amazing and beautiful this area truly is. It will be her second half marathon and her first event here," she said.

"I live in a very small seaside community, so I generally have to drive to be able to run with someone. There are always people to run with though."

Asked what motivates her to keep pushing the boundaries, she says "Probably my ego," she laughs.

"I've completed two full marathons, and countless half marathons, so my next major event will hopefully be Oscars Hut2Hut. I love the reasons behind the run, and I love the bush, so it's a logical progression," she said.

Jake Ward is one man who refuses to give up.

Despite running thousands of gruelling kilometres in recent years, he never lost sight of the bigger picture he had in mind which was raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

In recognition for his efforts, the 33-yearold Cranbourne resident received the Paul Harris Fellow award at the Cranbourne Rotary Club on Tuesday, 8 May. Mr Ward, who lost his cousin and aunt to the disease,&nbsp;is the first person to receive the award as a non-Rotarian in 25 years.

"It's very mind blowing, I'm very honoured," said Mr Ward, who has helped raise more than $100,000 for the foundation.

"I never ran for awards, I ran to raise awareness and raise much-needed funds," he said.

"It was definitely a team effort because it takes the generosity of people to put their hand into their pockets to help me out."

Mr Ward pushed his body to the limit in a series of three fundraiser runs. The first was a 100km run in 2013; the second, a 1000km run from the Sydney Opera house to Cranbourne and the third, a whopping 1500km run from Queensland to Cranbourne in 2016.

After completing his last run, Mr Ward proposed to his then girlfriend, Jess, before marrying her in January this year.

Even though he is now battling hip troubles, looking back, Mr Ward&nbsp;says "It was all worth it."

"If I was tired I could walk, if I wanted a break I could have a break. But people that are battling the sickness, they don't get to pick and choose when they can deal with it."

"I'm just an average person. It was more just to show people that anyone could really,

"I just keeping thinking of people that are actually battling through cancer - they're going through a lot more pain."

Students of St Peter's College in Cranbourne received an inspiring visit from a Rio Olympic team athlete last week.

Track and Field athlete Melissa Duncan from Knox Athletics and the Victorian Institute of Sport shared her story and what it takes to be an elite athlete on Tuesday, 8 May. The 28-year-old spoke about how she didn't like sport as a teenager, admitting she wasn't very good at it.

Melissa found her passion in running after tagging along with her sister to a sports event, and to her surprise the more she trained and competed the better she was at it.

She instilled a message to students that they can achieve anything they want if they put in enough dedication.

"Give everything a try, you never know what sport or event you may love and in turn excel at," she told the students. "You never know where your love for a sport and your ability will come from."

Melissa's visit formed part of a winning prize to the school after signing up for the 2018

Premiers Active April and achieving high participation rates and outstanding results.

St Peter's College spokeswoman April Hampson said Melissa shared some inspiring tips, including overcoming adversity.

"Melissa then went on to tell how stress fractures in her foot have derailed her training and competing schedule over a number of years with the devastating withdrawal from the Rio Olympic Team due to a fracture and torn ligament in her foot just a few months out from competition," she said.

"No matter how many times and how long her recovery, she works towards is regaining her fitness and competing at the highest level again."

In her closing message, Melissa said: "I love what I do, I am so lucky to be able to train and compete in Australia throughout the summer and then just as winter sets in I go to Europe and train and compete there throughout their summer."

Melissa's most recent achievement includes coming sixth in the 1500 metre run at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, USA.

By Brendan Rees A man broke his foot while trying to flee from intruders who allegedly forced their way into his Botanic Ridge home on Tuesday, 1 May. Police have been told the 32-year-old victim was in the shower when he heard knocking at the front door at about 7.30am.

Casey crime investigation unit Senior Constable Alison Johnson said a group of three men were on the front porch of the Seaview Drive home where they have kicked in a glass section of the front door.

The victim ran out the back after the intruders stormed into the house by smashing another window. They ransacked the home,

stealing cash and a set of car keys, before leaving in a dark VT Commodore, she said.

"When the victim tried to flee out the back door he's jumped the back fence and broken his foot whilst doing so," she said.

Sen Const Johnson said unknown offenders returned the following night in an attempt to steal the victim's car, described as a Jeep, which was parked in the driveway. However they were unsuccessful as the car was demobilised.

"The bonnet of the vehicle was up and the doors were open," she said.

Sen Const Johnson said it was not known if the intruders were involved in attempting to steal the victim's car.

Savers has opened a large store in Carrum Downs and the local community could not be more thrilled.

The popular superstore that sells recycled clothing and goods opened on 15 March.

Savers District Manager Fez Puskas said the store is bigger and better than ever and is a true recycled superstore.

“Everything is preloved. It is in a department store setting so quite a big footprint,” Mr Puskas said.

“We know the people in the Carrum Downs area and surrounds love Savers so we always wanted to be there. We are very excited to be bringing the store to the area.”

The Savers family of stores is a for-profit, global thrift retailer offering great quality, gently used clothing, accessories and household goods.

Their business model of purchasing, reselling and recycling gives communities a smart way to shop and keeps more than 317.5 million kilos of used goods from landfills each year.

“The actual store has over 100,000 items for sale and each day we bring out 5000-6000 items for sale each day so (there’s) a lot of variety for the customer. It is all about quality preloved (goods) and is an exciting experience and a treasure hunt,” Mr Puskas said.

Mr Puskas said the business model is to work with non-profits in the community, including Red Nose Saving Little Lives and Diabetes Victoria.

St John of God Health Care actively seeks employees who can uphold the organisation's values of hospitality, compassion, respect, justice and excellence.

So when nurses, Tess Matthews, Natalie Mason, Madeline White and Bridget Adams declared they were going to Nepal as part of a 30-day nursing program to help communities with limited access to medical services, St John of God Berwick Hospital got right behind them.

"These young ladies not only uphold these values in the working environment, they are literally living them both professionally and personally as well," acting CEO of St John of God Berwick Hospital Lisa Evans said.

"It's a testament to the good character of the caregivers we're fortunate enough to have working with us."

In addition to flight costs and the $2300 they each have to pay to join the Nurses in Action Program, the nurses need to individually raise $2200 as part of a donation to Nepal's medical needs in order to participate.

So far the team has raised roughly a third

of their overall target with a little over $3000 raised to date.

However, they are still a long way from the $8800 goal. In order to raise further funds, St John of God Berwick Hospital is hosting a Nepalese BBQ for its caregivers.

They will also be raffling off a beautiful hand-made quilt which was donated to the hospital by a team of local quilters.

The Nurses in Action (NIA) program is a specialised, skilled volunteer program for qualified health professionals.

The program's objective is to build local capacity in improving health services to rural communities living in extreme poverty who would not be able to access it otherwise.

NIA volunteers work in local medical clinics, hospitals, mountain villages, women's shelters, palliative sheds, schools, children's homes, monasteries, juvenile prisons and orphanages.

Keeping an eye on kidneys Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre believes that kidney cancers are one of the more challenging areas for a modern urologist to deal with.

Mr McCahy explained that before the readily available ultrasound scans that are seen today, many patients presented very late to their doctor. This made problems such as a painful large lump in the tummy and associated blood in the water a common issue.

Nowadays, an ultrasound scan is performed for many reasons and the kidneys are routinely reviewed.

Small lumps are being found and the question becomes how to deal with them.

“By definition, a small renal mass is a solid lump less than 4cm in diameter,” Mr McCahy said.

“We know that up to 80% of these will be cancers but the majority are very slow growing and in elderly patients may never cause any trouble.” Mr McCahy said a special CT with contrast is likely to be almost diagnostic.

“In these circumstances, it may be quite legitimate to monitor the lump with regular ultrasound scans and only consider treatment if there is a major change,” Mr McCahy said.

Call out for experienced pipers The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced pipers. The group play B Flat chanters

Davies banging on the door

By Nick Creely As Narre Warren enjoys a rollicking 5-0 start, they have also unearthed an absolute gem in defender Jesse Davies.

The 19-year-old graduate from the Dandenong Stingrays and a Frankston listed player in the VFL has been in superb touch as a key defender down at Kalora Park, breaking out as one of the competition's most exciting talents in the opening five rounds of the season.

Davies, who is banging down the door for a game with the Dolphins, is thrilled with his start to the season, but ultimately wants to keep improving himself.

"The first few rounds I've been really happy with how I've been playing - not getting picked to play VFL is a bit disappointing, but to go back to Narre and play good footy and be 5-0 is great," he said.

"I just want to play my role - if the coach comes to me and wants me to lock down on a bloke, that's my number one priority."

Davies was among the Magpies' best in their superb win over Berwick earlier this season, while games against Beaconsfield and Doveton in recent weeks has provided the defender with the perfect chance to showcase some elite skills.

And he hasn't felt out of place in the rigours of senior footy, with his early introduction during his junior days a perfect grounding in a tough competition.

"The big bodies haven't bothered me, I played my first game of senior footy when I was 15 with Longwarry and I played the whole year in the seniors, so that hasn't really bothered me - as I continue to step up to higher levels, it's more just going to be the speed of the game I need to adjust to," he said.

"It was a bit weird, at the end of last year I had a really good year and I didn't get talked to by any AFL clubs, so I was unsure what I wanted to do - I took a couple weeks off footy, missed the first few weeks of pre-season and then decided to go down to Frankston and give it a crack and play the highest quality I can," he said.

"Whether that's this year or next, I'll continue to work on my footy and keep improving

- the two biggest things for me is my fitness, which has always held me back, and then also my confidence in talking, and to talk on the ground - coming into a new environment, I'm pretty shy, so I came in pre-season late and I was starting behind the pack a bit, but as the season's gone on, I'm feeling more comfortable.

"The backline down at Frankston is pretty stable, and not many ins and outs, I'll just keep improving at Narre and get at least one game this year.

"My goal is to keep improving and if I get

And Davies could turn out for the South East in the AFL Victoria Community Championship clash with AFL Yarra Ranges on Saturday.

"I've been to training, and as long as I'm picked I'll be playing this weekend - I've always loved interleague, playing with the best and against the best, it's just a good standard of footy and I'm looking forward to it," he said.

Those who want a great day of football action will want to get to Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield on Saturday.

The day begins at 9am with under-19 interleague action between the South East Football Netball League and AFL Yarra Ranges, before the seniors face off at 10:50am.

Then Richmond takes on Sandringham at 2:10pm in what promises to be a cracking VFL contest.

Richmond has built a strong connection with the Cardinia Shire over recent years and the team has fond memories of playing at Holm Park in 2017.

The Tigers defeated Casey last season in Beaconsfield and Richmond coach Craig McRae talked about that experience.

"We really enjoyed coming out to the Cardinia Shire - it's important to the Richmond Football Club." He said.

"Along with Melbourne, we've both got a lot of supporters in the Cardinia Shire and it's a good opportunity to come out and show our appreciation. We've got good memories and the facilities are awesome, so we're looking forward to it."

The Tigers are off to a flying start in season 2018, much like the AFL squad, having dropped just one game. And there are plenty of stars lining up in the VFL for Richmond fans to watch out for.

"We've got a lot of young, aspiring AFL players and there's some player's people would know like Brandon Ellis - a premiership player - who has played in the VFL the last two weeks, Anthony Miles and then our first year draftees." McRae said.

"We'd love to think that in the last two years in particular, our VFL program has been a solid foundation for our AFL success - there are a lot of players developing, waiting for their opportunity. Last week we had 14 AFL players and there could be more potentially back from injury this week."

Amber’s leaping to success

Richmond's AFL game plan is built around pressure and it won them a premiership in 2017. McRae said fans can expect that same manic intensity on Saturday.

"Yes, every week [we want to bring that pressure]. We mirror everything that the AFL program does - we mirror our game plan, our preparation, our coaching structure - it's all the same as the AFL." He said.

"We take great pride in that and if you come and watch the VFL, you'll see the same stuff."

Richmond members receive free admission all day, while entry is $10 for adult non-members and $5 for child non-members.

Narre Warren North teenager Amber Clarke is an exceptional athlete, and one that is certain to make waves as she progresses her athletics career.

The youngster, who is also a talented young footballer in her own right, recently competed in the 2018 Australian Little Athletics Championships on the sunny Gold Coast late last month, and to unbelievable success.

Competing in the 80 metre hurdles, Amber ran an incredible 12.24 in the Under 13 age bracket, claiming gold and a national record as a result. Determined to walk away with even more medals, she stormed home by .13 of a second to claim the 200 metre hurdles gold medal with a time of 28.10.

Using Sally Pearson as inspiration, the sky is the limit for the ambitious hurdler, who has done a lot of work to get where she is now.

“I started years ago, I sort of just decided to try out hurdles, and I turned out to be really good at it, and I’ve done a lot of training to get good at it,” she said.

But what makes a champion hurdler?

You need to be fast, and be able to sprint, and also have the right technique - you have

to stride out your steps a little bit so you can make sure you can jump over the hurdle properly,” she said.

While she looks to the future, Amber is extremely proud of her achievements and hopes it can spur her to continue to thrive in her chosen sport.

“I have an Australian record for my age group for 80m hurdles - I was really happy to get that, I knew I had the Victorian record, but I was shocked to win the Australian,” she said.

“I want to make a few more Nationals, and I’d love to make the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.”

But Amber is also a talented winger for the Narre North Foxes and the first female to be accepted into the Rowville Sports Academy football program, and already has a league best and fairest next to her name. On Sunday, she played her 75th game of football, and also harbors aspirations to make a career out of the game.

“I’d like to make the Olympics and the AFL, some people are saying it’s not possible, but my friends know someone who played netball and also AFLW, so it’s possible,” she said.

“I’ve won one league best and fairest, and I want to win another one too.”

Cavs continuing to build

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers went 4-2 in a loaded weekend of Big V basketball action.

The State Championship Men were unable to get going on offence as the Hawthorn Magic stifled the Cavs at home on Saturday night.

The Magic won every quarter, led by Jack Barry (21 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) to take the win, 76-56.

For the Cavs, Raheem Lemons (15 points, 11 rebounds) played a lone hand as his hot form continued.

The Division 1 Women made it two from two as they took care of the Western Port Steelers on Saturday night and backed it up with a thrilling win in Werribee on Sunday.

It was a total team effort against the Western Port Steelers, with six players scoring at least eight points and Rebecca Borham topscoring with 12, in the 73-52 win.

On Sunday, the Cavs had to fight all the way into overtime against the Devils to get the win, 79-77.

With scores tied heading into the final quarter, neither team could gain the ascendency.

The Cavs missed a free-throw with seconds remaining that would have secured the win in regulation, but in overtime, the Cavs got the job done with some clutch buckets.

Tanarly Hood (21 points, 10 rebounds), Tarryn Wilkin (20 points, 10 rebounds) and JamieLee Jeffs (19 points, 11 rebounds) all posted impressive double-doubles.

The Youth League 1 Men scored a massive win on Saturday night, but fell on Sunday to go 1-1 over the weekend.

Against Werribee, Casey picked up the defence and held the Devils to just 21% shooting from the floor, on their way to a resounding 104-60 win.

Jordan Gooiker (21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) was dominant once again for the Cavs, while Brendon Head (20 points, 11 rebounds) recorded a double-double.

Against Camberwell on Sunday, Casey was unable to overcome a third quarter collapse that saw the Dragons outscore the Cavs, 27-12.

Camberwell took control in that quarter and grabbed the 83-68 win. Jordan Gooiker (18 points, 6 rebounds) was best for Casey in the loss.

In Youth League 2 Women action, the Cavs recorded a blow-out win over Werribee, 12258. It was a dominant performance from the outset, with a 36-18 first quarter setting the tone.

The Cavs scored 40 points off turnovers, compared to just two for the Devils, highlighting the Cavs manic defence.

Lauren Tuplin (28 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) was efficient on offence, 11/15FG, and Rebecca Peacock (22 points) added to the offensive clinic.

Round 9 sees a Youth League 2 and Division 1 Women double-header tip off from 6pm at Casey Stadium on Saturday night.

The action continues on Sunday with the State Championship and Youth League 1 Men facing Waverley in another double-header at Casey Stadium from 2pm.

The preparations for Saturday’s massive Interleague clash with AFL Yarra Ranges are almost finalised, with the South East FNL reducing its squad down to 27 players.

The final squad - likely to be named later this week - will be dependent on the VFL players in the squad and whether they will be selected for state level football on the weekend.

South East coach Rhys Nisbet is thrilled with the squad he has assembled, and can’t wait to get out there and test the side’s mettle.

“We can’t wait - we’ve had a really good response from the players and coaches this year, and we were conscience of picking the best side we could, and we got that, so it’s great,” he said.

“We’re really keen to get out there and show our stuff.”

In what looks like a high quality group of players, the most notable name on the list is that of Cranbourne champion Marc Holt, who got through his first game back unscathed on the weekend.

Superstars Madi Andrews, Ash Smith, Brad Scalzo and Trent Cody all appear to be locks to line up on Saturday, as they look to bounce back from last year’s 18-point defeat to Hampden.

But the most interesting and fascinating part of what is set to be a blockbuster clash is the fact that both competitions are likely to be one in 2019 as talks of divisional football ramps up, something not lost on Nisbet.

“We’ve thought about it a little bit, it’s something playing on our minds - we’re trying to stay focused on what we’re doing and what we’re about and hopefully we can get the right result,” he said.

The clash between the two competitions will begin at 10.50am at Holm Park in Beaconsfield, and is the curtain raiser for the VFL clash between Richmond and Sandringham.

Narre at its clinical best

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 5 It's almost frightening just how clinical Narre Warren's first five rounds have been.

Wins of 16 points, 19, 72, 130 and now 106 - at an average of 68.6 points - prove that the Magpies have had one of the more brilliant starts of recent memory.

Doveton were the unfortunate recipient of the Magpies' golden touch on Saturday, with the home crowd flocking to Kalora Park for their first home game in front of the spectacular new social rooms, 23.20 (158) to 7.10 (52).

In the end it was always going to go one way, nothing less than a strong Magpie victory. But the Doves showed plenty of spirit, and were simply outclassed by a team hell-bent on blitzing the competition.

The Doves did everything in their power to stick with the home side in the first half, but the Magpies had an answer every time Daniel Charles' side had some momentum, with the likes of Mitch Cox, Trent Cody, the skilful Cory MacHaya and a typically industrious effort from Jake Richardson and Jesse Davies lifting when it mattered, taking in a 40 point half time lead after kicking five goals in each of the opening two quarters.

But it was the premiership third quarter where the Magpies lifted their rating and played at their breathtaking best, booting a wayward 7.11 to completely blanket the Doves to extend that margin to 92 points with a quarter left to play.

"As I said to the players, our third quarter was good, and that's been the key for us - on the weekend we probably crucified how hard we worked and kicked something like 7.10, and some of those shots we should have really made," coach Matt Shinners said of the quarter.

"We played some great footy in our forward half, and our tackle pressure was really good, and they just didn't score in that third quarter."

In the eventual 106 point win, the Magpies had 12 individual goal kickers - including seven multiple goal scorers - making them easily the most unpredictable side in the competition.

"We changed the side around a bit again, with the two young kids not being available, so two players came in with Mitch Cox and Trent Papworth really good all day," Shinners said.

"This year, with how we've been able to spread our goals around is fantastic, and it makes it harder for the opposition to identify because we're not reliant on any one individual."

At Holm Park, Beaconsfield knocked Officer off with ease with a 95-point drubbing, 17.23 (125) to 4.6 (30).

It appeared as anything but a one-sided affair early, with the Kangaroos cracking in early and kicking the opening major through Jayce Valentine.

The Eagles were inaccurate early, but broke through after four behinds late in the quarter with VFL listed midfielder Sean Dwyer kicking a cracker from the pocket. It lead to a further two goals, but that inaccuracy hurt them, emerging from the first term with 12 shots to three but only a 19-point lead.

Scott Meyer was particular influential with a class display in the ruck, giving the midfield group first use with some deft ruck work, while Dwyer and Matt Homfray were all class as the home side threatened to tear the game apart.

Over the course of the next two quarters, the Kangaroos had no answers for Nathan Langley (five goals) and Scott Meyer (five), who were floating forward and making a significant impact with their contested marking.

After slamming on 11 goals to two over the course of an hour, the margin quickly rose to an ominous 79-point three quarter time lead, which eventually ended with a 95-point win.

But it was the ease of Beaconsfield's ball movement that was the worry - Riley Verbi was a class act and found a stack of the football, capping off his superb game with a late goal, Daniel Johnston hardly missed a target by foot, while Meyer got the better of the in-form Sean Roach.

Cranbourne, meanwhile, did what any good side does when they are faced with a challenge.

Another goal only moments later draw the margin out to 22-points, and the Eagles found a way on top, and critically, as they found their mojo to slam on a further four to ice the game in the premiership quarter.

With a superb performance from bright young star Lewis Vella - playing his first senior game - the Eagles responded with a clinical final 30 minutes, with the returning champ Marc Holt also getting in on the act with two goals as he builds into form.

But it was yet another sign of the side Pakenham is slowly building, with Zac Stewart once again tremendous for the Lions, while Jay Jay Peni continues to impress in the coalface for the young side.

"We had to work pretty hard, a lot of credit to Pakenham, they make you really work for it - it was a good contested game, and we knew that going in," Eagles coach Steve O'Brien said of the match.

"Halfway through the second we had a good break on them and we probably took the foot off the pedal a little bit, and credit to Pakenham, they got an advantage, got on a roll and closed in at half time.

"At half time, we adjusted a couple of things and we're able to run out winners."

And in the final game of the round, Berwick used all of it's class, experience and goal kicking prowess to completely flatten Tooradin at Edwin Flack, 24.19 (163) to 2.5 (17).

The writing was on the wall early when inform forward Harry Money expertly curled a ball around, and from there, a running precision saw five more goals piled on, and the quarter time score read 6.5 (41) to 0.0.

It's fair to say the Gulls were shell shocked, and with Bailey Asher, Travis Tuck and champs Luke Sheppard and Madi Andrews looking as if they have five seconds more time than their opponents, it was serious danger signs.

The 41-point margin was stretched out to 53-points at the major break, with Andrew Dean booting the only major of the half.

The only real issue with the Wickers - if you can really nit-pick - in the early stages of the season has been taking the foot off and not really ramming home the advantage, but that was quashed when Trent Thomas coolly slotted another major on his way to five early in the third.

From there, it was the premiers at their blistering best, running in waves, using the footy expertly and on the rare occasion the opposition get the ball inside their attacking fifty, defend with desperation.

Lachie Gillespie's men will look to bounce back when they face Narre Warren at home after the interleague break, while Berwick face great rivals Cranbourne in what looms as a blockbuster.

Hawks no match for Dees

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons have put together their most impressive performance of the season, recording a strong win against the previously undefeated Box Hill Hawks.

The Demons got off to the perfect start with Melbourne Captain Jack Viney, who made a successful return from injury, getting the first clearance and forward 50 entry of the game.

Jay Kennedy-Harris got on the end of it and Casey had their first goal within one minute.

In what was a back and forth first quarter, neither team was able to break free. The Demons took a hard-fought 4.4 (28) to 3.2 (20) lead into the first break.

The second quarter was much of the same.

Both teams had a real desire for the ball and the contest was well and truly alive.

Billy Stretch and Joel Smith were gathering plenty of the ball, but finding avenues to goal was proving difficult for both teams.

Two goals each for the quarter saw the Demons hold a seven-point lead at the main break.

Two goals quick goals to begin the third quarter, via some Tomas Bugg magic and an Angus Scott set shot from 50 metres out extended the lead to a game-high 20 points.

But as they so often do, Box Hill responded by booting two goals of their own, cutting the Demons' lead to just eight points.

With the Hawks appearing to have gained the momentum, the Demons replied with a dominant 15 minutes of play.

Tim Smith put through a major against the run of play and from there, it was all Casey for the remainder of the term.

Although their dominance didn't translate on the scoreboard - kicking 2.4 in that burst - it was telling that they were able to regain the momentum and control the game with a 25-point lead after three quarters.

points and all was going well. Once again, the Hawks fought their way back into the contest with three unanswered goals.

Tim Smith responded by kicking two goals in two minutes at the 22-minute mark to all but break Box Hill's back.

Late goals to Stretch and Corey Wagner saw the Demons get home comfortably, 16.15 (111) to 11.6 (72).

Billy Stretch finished the game with 31 disposals and a goal in a best afield performance, while Tomas Bugg (20 disposals, four goals),

Tim Smith (two goals) and Cam Pedersen (20 disposals, one goal) were pivotal.

Casey's record now stands at 3-2, sitting seventh on the ladder. In Round 7 action, Casey faces the Frankston Dolphins in Frankston on Saturday afternoon.

The Rays rush right past the Ranges

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays remain on top of the TAC Cup ladder with a 5-1 record after a dominant win over the Eastern Ranges at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Ranges got off to a flying start, kicking the first goal of the game, but the Rays responded by kicking five of the next six majors.

First quarter goals to Jake Frawley and Corey Ellison were critical in helping the Rays stay well within reach early and they went into quarter time with a two-point lead.

After a tight first quarter, the Rays lifted their intensity in the second quarter and an early goal to Bailey Schmidt set the wheels in motion.

While the Rays were controlling the play and locked the ball in their forward half, they were wasteful in front of goal, scoring three behinds before a Lachlan McDonnell major finally rewarded the hard work being done

higher up the ground.

Bailey Williams and Matthew Cottrell both slotted majors in the second half of the quarter to give the Rays a 22-point half time lead.

To the Ranges' credit, they came out firing after half time and kicked the first two goals of the third to cut the lead to just 10 points.

When Riley Smith launched a long bomb for the Ranges' sixth goal, it looked like the game was set up for a thrilling final 40 minutes of play.

The Rays had other ideas though.

Three goals in quick succession in the final minutes of the quarter had the Rays on top by 30 points at the final change. This late quarter burst zapped the energy and flair out of their Ranges opponents.

Campbell Hustwaite and Hayden Young were asserting themselves on the contest as their composure and sublime skills shone through in the clinches.

Three goals to none in the final quarter saw the Rays run out 52-point winners, 13.13 (91) to 6.3 (39). Six unanswered goals to finish the game once again showcased Dandenong's ability to run over opponents.

Hustwaite and Young led from the front, while Jake Frawley was also impressive all day.

Bailey Schmidt, Matthew Cottrell (two goals each) and Corey Ellison (three goals) were dangerous up forward and converted when it mattered most.

The Rays' ability to respond when they were challenged in the third quarter was the highlight of the day. It wasn't just the stars who stood up either - the total team effort was simply too much for the Eastern Ranges.

Next up, Round 7 presents an immense challenge to the Rays.

The Eagles and Burra roar home to remain undefeated

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 6 Keysborough remain undefeated, taking care of Hampton, 12.10 (82) to 5.12 (42). Adam Machnikowski was best for the Burras, while Chris Bryan (four gaols) was dangerous.

The Doveton Eagles also kept their unbeaten season alive with a win over Highett, 13.19 (97) to 9.5 (59).

After a terribly slow start, which saw Highett race to a 28-point lead at quarter time, the Eagles booted 6 goals to none in the second to take a 12-point lead into the main break. Matt Neve and Nicholas Beer were best afield for the Eagles.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 4 Hallam came roaring home, but it wasn't enough as South Yarra claimed the win, 9.11 (65) to 8.7 (55). Rory McIvor and Dion Cavallo were best for the Hawks.

Endeavour Hills were in the contest all day, but Ashwood claimed a 6.13 (49) to 5.7 (37) win. Sam McLean was impressive for Endeavour Hills.

Springvale Districts were too strong for Black Rock, running out 10.12 (72) to 2.4 (16) winners. Sam Raru and Stafan Feehan booted four goals each for Springvale Districts.

Hampton Park was wasteful, but it mattered little as the Redbacks demolished Heatherton, 9.16 (70) to 1.3 (9). Daniel Boudoloh and

Mitchell Hill were pivotal for the Redbacks.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 6 Sandown was overrun by Cerebus in Division 4, falling 5.10 (40) to 8.13 (61). The Cobras were led by Nathan Isles and Aaron Woods.

Dandenong put up a valiant fourth quarter effort but couldn't chase down Lyndhurst, falling 9.9 (63) to 10.17 (77). Michael Scott, Jayke Hopkins and Nicholas Ford battled hard.

Lyndale had no answers for Carrum Patterson Lakes. The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't get back in the game, falling 6.6 (42) to 12.12 (84).

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 6

Down at Bunguyan Reserve, a five goal haul to Luke Jennings inspired Pearcedale to a strong win over Tyabb, 10.11 (71) to 16.13 (109).

Aidan Simmons contributed four goals in a classy display, while Travis Bravo was also brilliant with three of his own.

TAC CUP GIRLS - ROUND 9 The Stingrays finished their TAC Cup Girls season on a high with their fourth in a row.
