MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the privilege of catching up with two local cancer survivors for this week's cover story - on pages 4 and 5 and learning about their journey.

Pretty much everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another at some point in our lives - if you haven't battled it yourself, chances are someone near and dear to you has.

It's human nature to take our health for granted when we're fit and well particularly us blokes - but cancer can strike in the midst of life when one least expects it, changing everything as the result of a sudden and unexpected diagnosis.

The good news is there is plenty of support on offer for people with cancer - both from organisations like the Cancer Council and, for most, networks of family and friends. The message is you don't have to face cancer alone.

The Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea is coming up in a fortnight's time and there are plenty of local 'BMT' events for our communities to support - and it's certainly not too late to organise one of your own.

My thanks to Warwick's Ken Hartnett and Natalie Bowman of Killarney for sharing their stories of survival with readers this week truly inspirational.

ALPACA SHOOTING HORRIFIES POLICE In an act that local police are calling heartless, six alpacas were shot and killed at a rural Glen Aplin property south of Stanthorpe last week.

A Queensland Police Media statement released last weekend said police were called to a Mount Stirling Road property on Saturday, when the animals' owner found five of his alpacas dead and one critically injured in their paddock.

The injured animal had to be euthanised and an examination by a local veterinarian indicated that the animals had been shot

with a small-calibre firearm sometime between Wednesday 2 May and Thursday 3 May. Senior Constable Jim Ellis of the Stanthorpe Police said the animals would have been defenceless and it was hard to comprehend the senseless violence.

"Disturbingly this is the second incident of shooting deaths involving alpacas on rural properties, with seven killed at Lyra last September," he said.

"These senseless deaths are wrong and heartless and I'm urging anyone who may

have noticed anything or anyone suspicious or out of the ordinary in the local area to contact police."

Police continue to investigate the shooting deaths of seven alpacas at a rural property on Curtin Road at Lyra, which occurred between September 16 and 18 last year.

All seven animals were shot with a smallcalibre firearm.

At least one Southern Downs livestock producer says prickly or tree pear is an important supplementary cattle feed as part of his objection to the council's controversial Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS).

Pratten landowner and cattleman Colin Clegg is supporting a petition being circulated in the community against the Scheme, saying the council has imposed a "one size fits all approach".

Rural landowners who have not submitted 'Control Works' forms to the council - outlining their pest animal and weed control measures for the current financial year - are now being hit with 'supplementary rates notices' in the hundreds and thousands of dollars for noncompliance.

"I have 160 acres under cultivation which is totally weed-free - I am still levied on this land which has no weeds," Mr Clegg told the Free Times.

"I also have issues with the identification of weeds.

"Johnson grass is not on the council list, but on my property it is an invasive weed - if it gets into sorghum crops these can become unsaleable.

"I also spend my own resources eradicating Johnson grass from the council roads adjoining my property to prevent any contamination.

"Further, I have tree pear on my property which I use as a supplementary feed for my cattle in times of drought.

"Four years ago my cattle came through a difficult drought with shiny coats from being feed on tree pear.

"I do not wish to totally eradicate this valuable resource from my property 12379254-RA08-18

The Southern Downs Regional Council says it will hold a public forum to discuss the future management of the Warwick Saleyards but is yet to set a date.

Local livestock producers continue to speculate on a potential plan by the council to lease out the Saleyards to a private operator, understood to be RLX Regional Livestock Exchanges, which operates saleyards in Queensland and New South Wales, including Gracemere, Inverell and Tamworth.

The Free Times has continually sought updates from the council about the status of the leasing plan but the council is yet to provide specifics about the timeframe for making the final decision on the controversial move, which many fear will result in a massive increase in Saleyards fees.

A council spokeswoman this week said a report on the leasing tender will be tabled at the next meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee but could not confirm a date for that meeting.

The majority of the minutes of the Committee's meetings have been kept confidential.

"Council has received a response to the saleyards tender and in the near future all interested community members will be

invited to attend a forum to discuss options for the management of the saleyards," the spokeswoman said.

At a meeting with council officers last December local livestock agents were provided with an indicative schedule of the fees the preferred tenderer may charge, and they are significantly higher than those currently charged by the council - to the tune of up to 50 per cent in some instances.

But also of concern to local agents is the affiliation fee the new operator could charge, listed in their schedule as an "agent turnover fee" - meaning agents' businesses would be charged the equivalent of 15 per cent of their total annual turnover every year.

In some cases, that figure could represent the annual wages of at least one full-time employee, if not more, depending on the size of the business.

The council has said all along it will be guided by the views of the Saleyards Advisory Committee on the leasing plan and that the Warwick Saleyards are not for sale.

It has also refused to release the results of a survey of Saleyards users conducted last November to gather their views on the Saleyards' "future operations".

Around 100 survey responses were returned to the council. ●

or Natalie Bowman one of the toughest things about cancer - aside from her treatment - has been accepting help from those who offer it.

The Killarney local was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and is the first to admit she has a strong independent streak, and that it's not in her nature to seek or receive assistance from others.

And the mother of three is likewise not used to putting herself first, but over the last 10 or so months she's had to overcome that trait as well - as she says, it's one of the keys to surviving cancer.

Natalie - who has only a minimal family history of cancer - discovered a lump in her breast last July and from there the 39 year old's world began turning upside down.

What followed was a whirlwind of medical appointments and examinations, culminating in a lumpectomy, six rounds of chemotherapy and 21 radiation treatments - which she's still completing - not to mention an upcoming course of preventative medication ongoing until October.

Natalie is not yet officially 'in remission' but the signs are looking as positive as they can be, due in part to her young age at diagnosis, and early intervention - the 'five year survival rate' for breast cancer patients is 80 per cent, as in no recurrence within those first five years.

"I was devastated," she says simply, recalling the cancer news being delivered.

"Basically I freaked out at the start - I initially decided I was going to have a full mastectomy, I wanted to give myself the best possible chance of survival. But my surgeon recommended against it - lumpectomies are more successful than they used to be and the tumour was relatively small.

that and I can't imagine how they find the courage to get through."

Natalie says she has been "blown away" at the help available for cancer patients, including accommodation and travel subsidies arranged by the Cancer Council - along with wig and makeup 'tutorials' - and even small things like vouchers for food, petrol and house cleaning through cancer charity Mummy's Wish, which a friend signed her up for.

She's back to working two days a week, which was her normal routine pre-cancer, and she's now starting to focus on exercise and diet, "whereas up until now it's really all been about the treatment."

When asked what she'd say to someone newly-diagnosed with cancer, Natalie has a couple of simple messages.

"I think my best advice would be to never give up, to put yourself first and to accept help," she says.

"I also trusted my doctors - I did everything they recommended, I don't have any conspiracy theories about the medical profession.

"I wanted to do absolutely everything I could to survive to be around to watch my kids grow up." ●

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan called on locals to register and host a morning tea to give hope for a cancer-free future.

"Every cuppa poured and dollar raised enables Cancer Council to continue investing in lifesaving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs," Ms McMillan said.

"One Queenslander is diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes - the length of an average morning tea break.

"Hosting a morning tea is easy. Simply gather your closest friends and family, set a date, raise funds, and enjoy a cuppa together."

In 2018, the official day to host a morning tea is Thursday May 24, however anyone can host at any time in May or June.

MEMO TO BLOKES: 'DROP THE HE-MAN ATTITUDE' At 81 years young, spritely Warwick resident Ken Hartnett successfully fought off prostate cancer after a diagnosis at the age of 73.

While he's been clear for a while now, he's urging local men to be aware of their health and the need for cancer checks, particularly when it comes to the prostate - the location and function of which is probably a mystery to most blokes, let alone what can go wrong with it. Perhaps it's the thought of a doctor's latexed finger up the - er - rear passage that causes most males to just assume everything's OK 'down there', but what many probably don't realise is there's a far less invasive means of checking prostate health, by way of a simple blood test called the 'PSA test'.

And if you want to avoid further unpleasantness - including the highly-invasive sample-gathering without anaesthetic and the 40 doses of radiation he endured - Ken says it's in men's best interests to have the test done on a regular basis, from at least the age of 50.

"I think a lot of men have this 'He-Man' attitude when it comes to their health," Ken says.

"Prostate cancer is like any cancer - the earlier it's detected the better chance you have of beating it. I was lucky - in my case the cancer hadn't spread, but with a lot of blokes if it goes undetected it can move into the spine.

"If it gets to that stage, well, you're in real trouble."

What is the PSA test? · Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man's blood. · The blood level of PSA is often elevated in men with prostate cancer. · In its early stages, prostate cancer may not show any symptoms. Symptoms of early prostate cancer can include difficulty passing urine, a slow, interrupted flow of urine, frequent passing of urine, including at night, and incontinence. · Symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer include blood in urine, pain during urination and lower back or pelvic pain. ●

"The chemo was horrible - not so much nausea, which they give you drugs for, it was more like a really bad case of the flu times 10, every part of your body just aches and you have this constant gross metallic taste in your mouth.

"I found the radiation much easier to handle, although your skin does start to break down, and I still have some soreness in my bones."

For any cancer patient, the psychological battle can be just as hard as the physical one, along with the disruption to life's normal routines and finances - and the arduous travel involved for country patients, in Natalie's case to and from Toowoomba, sometimes twice in one day.

"A lot of people have said to me, 'You're just so brave', but I don't feel like I am, any more so than the next person," she said.

"You just do what you have to do to survive it, you get on with it.

"Your kids do help to keep you positive, although your patience can be a bit thin some days.

"My husband Brett has also been very supportive - he works away though which has made things hard at times.

"I am very lucky in that I have a very strong support network of family and friends - a lot of people don't have

"Council encourages everyone in the community to be conscious of their water usage, to be water efficient and to continue to practise being water wise - checking for leaks, installing water efficient devices and appliances, taking shorter showers and fix leaking taps and toilets as soon as possible.

"Council would like to remind residents that permanent water restrictions are currently in place across the entire Southern Downs region.

"Permanent water conservation measures will be in force even when water supplies are plentiful.

"This is an ongoing reminder to residents and businesses to use water efficiently at all times.

"The restrictions outline a 230 litre maximum consumption target per person per day."

The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has no immediate plans to increase water restrictions across the region, despite the continuation of dry conditions and Leslie Dam being at just 11 per cent of capacity.

Warwick and Stanthorpe both received well below average rainfall in April, with Warwick officially recording 5mm (Hermitage), compared to the long-term average for the month of 28.6mm, while Stanthorpe faired only a little better, recording 11.2mm (Leslie Parade), as against its long-term April average of 42mm.

Warwick's Leslie Dam has a total capacity of 106,250 mega litres (ML) but as of this week has just 11,677ML in storage, or 11 per cent of full capacity.

Storm King Dam in Stanthorpe last week had 1963ML in storage, representing 75.8 per cent of full capacity.

A council spokeswoman told the Free Times that under the Drought Management Plan "the Southern Downs region would move to further water restrictions when Leslie Dam reached 7.5 per cent capacity".

"The council's Water and Wastewater team is currently working on a new Water Efficiency Plan which will go out

A study into regulated parking in the Stanthorpe Central Business District (CBD) will not commence until the new financial year, the Southern Downs Regional Council says.

The potential plan was discussed at the November meeting of the council’s Road Safety Advisory Committee and the study will also examine loading zones, disabled parking and possible locations for electric battery charging.

Regulated parking - non-metered - in the Stanthorpe CBD is supported by the Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce.

A council spokeswoman said the council “will commission a consultant to prepare a report regarding regulated parking in Stanthorpe”. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council has declined to comment on the costs of printing and distribution of its ‘Southern Downs Mail’ newsletter.

The Free Times this week learned the publication is printed by a Toowoomba firm and asked the council for cost details, but no response was received by time of printing this week.

The council has also declined to confirm or deny suggestions that Planning and Environment Director Ken Harris has left the organisation. Engineering Services Director Peter See left the council in March and is now employed by Cunnamulla-based Paroo Shire.

or when recruitment for a permanent replacement would start. ●

HAVE SAY ON SOLAR Residents concerned about a proposed solar farm at Sladevale just north of Warwick are being encouraged to attend a meeting with Southern Downs councillors to be held at the Warwick Town Hall at 5.30pm next Monday 14 May. Residents of Sladevale and nearby Mount Tabor are furious that their right to object to the proposed 154 hectare solar farm has been stripped from them due to changes to the council’s planning rules.

Sydney-based renewable energy firm Terrain Solar applied to the Southern Downs Regional Council in January of this year for approval to install thousands of solar panels on prime cropping land off Freestone Road, bounded by Gleeson and Jensen Roads.

At that time, such a proposal would have been subject to public advertisement and submissions for and against from the public, but the application was placed on hold when the council and the state government asked for more information on aspects of the project.

But in the meantime the council amended its planning scheme - in March - to make proposed solar farms in the region only ‘code assessable’ - which means the Terrain Solar application will be decided on internally by council officers, with no rights of public objection or appeal.

VEGETATION FRUSTRATION The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and industry members have been left “frustrated and disappointed” following the passing of poor and unbalanced vegetation management legislation by the Queensland Government last week.

QFF President Stuart Armitage said despite the Liberal National Party (LNP) putting forward reasonable amendments, the Vegetation Management and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 has been enacted into law without changes.

“Longer term, these laws will have a devastating effect on Queensland’s agricultural sector and its reliant regional communities, and they are not the stable solution that we need,” Mr Armitage said in a statement released this morning.

Haven’t visited a council library for a while because you have overdue items and are worried about the late fees? Or you have existing late fees that have suspended your borrowing privileges? Here’s your chance to clean the slate and contribute to a worthy cause at the same time, as part of the Library Service’s ‘Winter Warmers’ amnesty and donation drive.

For the month of May, SDRC Libraries are running the amnesty and donation drive to benefit the Salvation Army. There will be no fees incurred on any overdue items returned - no matter how late or how many - if they are accompanied by the donation of warm items of clothing or bedding, such as socks, mittens, beanies, scarves, jumpers, shawls, flannelette pyjamas, blankets, or bedding. All donated items must be new and in the original packaging or with the price tag attached.

The amnesty will also apply to existing late fees already accrued, but not to lost item charges or items returned damaged.

And if you don’t have late fees, but would still like to contribute, all donations will be gratefully received and in return, you’ll receive five points on your Library/Art Gallery loyalty card. In June, the items will be passed on to the Salvation Army for distribution throughout the region.

“This bill is designed to arouse a city and bush divide. “It cynically manipulates the debate and casts farmers and people in the bush as backward environmental wreckers.

“That is completely unacceptable.” ●

RALLY FOR CAUSE CLOSE TO HEART

BY COLIN O'BRIEN On 6 April Warwick-based team O'Brien Rallysport of Phil, Marilyn and Colin left Warwick on the journey of a lifetime, realising a dream and ticking off a bucket list item - they were heading to Targa Tasmania 2018, 21 days and some 8000kms of driving to and around Tasmania twice, plus two ferry trips across Bass Strait.

The O'Brien family are celebrating 50 years in motorsport this year and this event was the ultimate way to celebrate.

Close family friend and former race and rally car driver Trevor Neilson joined the team at Bendigo with his Ford Transit van loaded and ready.

Entering one of the biggest and most famous tarmac car rallies in the world just does not happen easily. We started planning, booking and training 10 months ago and I started saving almost two years ago, as it is also a very expensive event due to the logistics of living so far away.

In the current economic climate it is near impossible to find major sponsors locally or at a national level, so we thought, "Let's use our journey to raise funds for a charity close to our family's heart". The response from family and some friends was overwhelming and assisted both 'beyond blue' and our journey.

The week before the rally started proper, myself and Sydney navigator Rhys Llewellyn spent four days checking the event pace notes. As this was the first time they had competed together and the first time I had competed on a 1-10 pace notes system this was considered a 'must-do 'for safety and experience. On Saturday 14 April team mechanics Ryan Moore from Warwick

and Brett Sinkins, formerly of Warwick, flew into Launceston to join the rest of the team.

The overall result for our team was 42nd outright 2nd in class out of 150 starters - we were 28th fastest overall on the last day and did our fastest stage of the event on the very last stage and beat the legendary Jim Richards on Day Six by five seconds, which will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Thank you to all team members but especially my parents who are the heart and soul of our team and without

their belief in me all of this would never have been possible. I do look forward to going back and competing again one day if a sponsor can be found. With the knowledge I now have of the event I know we can do even better. But if I never get there again it's OK because I have achieved my goal to compete at Targa and finish.

We need to thank Nick Ashwin from NA Autosport who did a lot of the preparation and tuning of the Mitsubishi pre-event and my employer Mal Wood Automotive for giving me time off work to chase a dream.

Thank you to 'beyond blue' for their support and remember if you are going through a tough time there are people who care and will listen and help you.

Life is precious we only get one so enjoy every day, set yourself a dream or goal and work towards it. ●

TOP TIPS FOR WINTER HEATING The key to clean and efficient wood heating is not just installing an efficient wood heater, it is also operating the heater correctly. This means getting a good, hot fire going as quickly as possible and maintaining this for the heating period. This is relatively simple to do with modern, efficient appliances, as long as fuel is sufficiently dry and the heater is lit and loaded correctly and well maintained. Efficient burning only occurs when adequate air is supplied to the fuel. This means that during starting and reloading, all air inlets must be fully open.

Every heater has slightly different characteristics, so read and follow any instruction from the manufacturer carefully.

If you are not satisfied with the performance of your heater, check with the retailers there is almost always a simple reason why you are not getting a good performance. It maybe something as simple as poor quality wood.

Getting Started · Use kindling wood, paper and firelighters to get the fire started. Large pieces of wood can then be added after a hot bed of coals has been established. · Leave air controls open for at least 20-30 minutes to start the fire burning. You can expect some smoke from your flue when you first start, but it should not last longer than 10-15 minutes.

Fuelling your Fire · Most heaters burn better with 3 or 4 logs rather than 1 or 2. Logs should not be too

big - 2 to 4kg for 40 cm logs is typical. · Heaters without grates will perform better with a layer of ash on the base of the firebox, and should only need cleaning periodically. When cleaning out the ash always leave 10mm or so behind. · Every time you add fuel to your fire, leave air controls open for 15-20 minutes to start wood burning properly, then keep your fire burning at a steady rate. · To obtain complete burning, you need a high temperature and enough air flow so coals and flames glow brightly. Dark, smouldering wood and a lot of smoke are signs of poor and incomplete burning as a result of insufficient air intake. · Never use petrol, oil or kerosene to help light the fire. They could cause an explosion.

Buying Fuel · For the best results, always use the type of fuel recommended by the manufacturer.

If your heater meets the national emission standard, it will have a compliance plate which specifies the correct fuel to use.

Overnight Burning · For overnight burning, load the heater at least half an hour before going to bed. Only turn the air supply down to minimum once all the wood is charred (about 15-20 minutes) to avoid creosote problems. Most heaters should still burn for eight hours without difficulty and you will have far less creosote problems than if you fill the heater and turn it to slow-burn

If buying wood ... · Place your orders early with a reputable fuel merchant, preferably one who is a member of The Australian Home Heating Association · Be sure of what you are buying or collecting in firewood. · Moisture content should be in the range of 12-20%. Hence the need to buy in summer months and stack in an air-dry mode, e.g. Roof cover, open sides · In defined areas, firewood must be sold by weight, so don't pay for excess weight in water. straight away. Buying and Installing Solid Fuel Appliances · Whatever the age of your solid fuel appliance, use it correctly to reduce the need for repairs and servicing.

· Always buy the right size heater. A heater that is too large for an area will have to be turned down too often and too small a heater can result in over-firing, shortening the life of the heater. · Install all appliances correctly - choose a qualified installer, a member of The Australian Home Heating Association.

Service and Maintenance · Service your heater during spring or early summer. This minimises the corrosive effects of creosote residue and condensation during the off-season. · Check the condition of the heater and flue, door seals, baffles, etc · Check for bird nests in or near the flue

Or alternatively.... · Get an early bird service call from an experienced installer/service person - preferably one who is a member of The Australian Home Heating Association. · Contact your retailer. · Maintenance Products. · Flue Checks · Your wood heater should be serviced once a year and you should have your flue cleaned regularly by your local chimney sweep. · Creosote is a substance formed by solid fuel combustion. Creosote and resin build-up can cause flue fires. · Check the flue prior to each winter.

Make it a habit to look outside and check your flue for smoke. If it is smoking excessively, you are wasting fuel and heat and may be causing unnecessary emissions. You need to increase the air supply to the fire. A little air avoids a lot of smoke.

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Zonta Club of Warwick is chasing volunteers to help assemble 'birthing kits' for women in developing countries next weekend.

The annual Zonta project supports the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) charity, which delivers the kits to pregnant women in need around the world.

Each kit contains a 1x1 square metre plastic sheet, a piece of soap, latex gloves, cord, a scalpel blade and sterile gauze and can literally save two lives.

Zonta will assemble this year's kits next Saturday 19 May at the PGC dining hall on Locke Street - note, the 'old' PGC, not The Scots PGC College - from 9.30am, with morning tea afterwards. All volunteers will be warmly welcomed.

MORGAN PARK GEARS UP FOR CUP The dust has settled after a big weekend of polocrosse action at Warwick's Morgan Park - which will host the Polocrosse World Cup in 2019.

Warwick competitor Ryle Waugh was in the thick of the action for Queensland at last weekend's Barastoc Interstate competition, held in conjunction with the 2018 Warwick Shell Cup Club Carnival, after being named in the Australian national squad for the World Cup. The full squad includes Lauren Sillitoe, Beth Hafey and Ryle Waugh from Queensland, Lucy Grills, Abbott Grills, Jim Grills, Lance Anderson and Will Weston from New South Wales, and Suzette Thomas and Billy Joe Thomas from WA. Celebrating 80 years of polocrosse in 2019, the Polocrosse World Cup will bring players from eight countries - Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, UK, Ireland, Zambia and Zimbabwe - to Morgan Park to see which team reigns supreme.

As current world champions, South Africa will be fighting to hold onto the title, while former champions Australia will use their home turf and supporters to their advantage to try and take it back.

The event takes place over seven days at Morgan Park, with spectator numbers expected to be in the tens of thousands for this world-class event. ●

LANGER IS THE MAN OF THE HOUR Finally Cricket Australia made the announcement most cricket followers expected last week when they made it official - Justin Langer is the man to lead Australia out of the mire and back into the sunshine.

Langer appears to be a quirky bloke but has an absolute love for the tradition and history of the game and is renowned for his no nonsense approach. I'm certain we will see a vastly different approach from our crickets in all forms of the game under his guidance.

He has already indicated that all three of the suspended players will be welcome back into the squad when their suspensions are up. Langer may just be the man to rein in the outrageous side of a now very contrite Dave Warner and bring out the very best in his cricket game. Let's hope so.

Shortly after accepting the position Langer said 'There is a difference between competitiveness and aggression.' There was no tougher opening partnership than he and Matt Hayden but there was a line neither crossed when it came to sportsmanship. We are all hoping for a return to those glory days in the future.

-Casey WINNERS LOOK HARD TO COME BY IN INDIGENOUS ROUND Round 10 of the NRL kicks off on Thursday night as the NRL comes together to celebrate the Indigenous Round. All players and officials will be proudly wearing Indigenous inspired jerseys. Launched at Suncorp Stadium last week the NRL is hoping to use its extensive reach to highlight social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and communities.

There will be Welcome to Country ceremonies will be at all games as well as pre match cultural performances ad gift exchanges between captains The Indigenous Round is always one of the most passionate and colourful rounds on the NRL calendar and the coming round will be no exception.

Of course tipsters will be hoping it gifts some teams some winning form.

The Tigers and Cowboys get things underway on Thursday night at Leichardt Oval. The Cowboys snuck home against the Panthers in Round nine but looked far from the slick machine we have become accustomed too. The Tigers will be looking for revenge after copping a pasting from the Warriors. The Cowboys have a poor record at Leichardt to and to add to the Cowboys on field issues they now have to contend with off field dramas surrounding Scott Bolton.

Might just give the Tigers the edge in a close game. The Panthers looked out of sorts against the Cowboys despite the impressive form of Jimmy Maloney. This week they travel up the M1 to Newcastle to take on the Knights. The Bunnies ended up pummelling the Knights but not before the Novocastrians gave them a bit of a fright. The Knights are showing some good signs this season and while they are still in a rebuilding phase I think they might get the prize here.

It might sound surprising but I am looking forward to the Parra Bulldogs game on Friday night. The Eels came home strongly against the Sharks while the Doggies had none of the rub of the green against the Broncos. Coach Dean Pay has 25,000 reasons to back that up.

It has been a frustrating season for fans of both clubs but I think the Doggies are overdue for a win and might finally have something to bark about after their game at ANZ on Friday night but this could go either way.

Picture: Jeremy Sollars The Warriors were a sight to behold last round and although they came away with a convincing win it came at a price. Key players Sean Johnston, Isaac Luke and Adam Blair all finished the game in the Casualty Ward. Their Coach however expects Luke and Blair to be on deck this round as they sweat on results of scans on their playmaker's ankle. They are at Mt Smart Stadium again this round when they take on the Roosters. The Roosters snuck home against Manly last start and are yet to show me the convincing form we expected.

The Warriors have a great record against the Tri-colours when they play at home and if their injured players strip fit they should add another win to the ledger.

Melbourne we handed a wakeup call by the inform Dragons in Round Nine and despite some very dubious decisions they were not allowed to play well enough to win. There will be plenty of Bellyaching this week as they prepare for their clash against the Titans in the first game of the double header on Saturday at Suncorp. The Titans were outclassed by the Raiders who have found a purple patch of form. It is hard to see them upsetting Melbourne who love playing Suncorp stadium.

The Sea Eagles have brought their home game against the Broncos to Suncorp for the second of the double header games. Both sides are playing well below par. The injury concerns for the Broncos continue with giant Payne Haas felled by Dave Klemmer. He will be missing until round 12 or 13. The Sea Eagles are not without their own injury concerns Dylan Walker the latest casualty.

The stats show in 43 starts these sides are 21 a piece with one drawn game. The Broncos have the better record at home and in front of an expected big crowd they should rise to the occasion.

Dragons fans have plenty to be excited about this week after their side quelled the Storm last week and knocked the odd tipster for six. They now sit alone at the top of the

This week they face the Bunnies at ANZ. The Rabbitohs welcome back enforcer Sam Burgess and will be hoping he can keep himself out of the Judiciary for the remainder of the season.

The Dragons show no signs of running out of puff this season and can continue their winning run here but it will be tough.

Round 10 closes with the Raiders hosting the Sharks at GIO in what are tipped to be chilly conditions.

Ricky's Raiders have hit their straps finally and looked impressive against the Titans. The Sharks are coming off a tight win against the Eels. They are hoping Paul Gallen will be back from injury but after last round lost Wade Graham who will be a key out. Have to stick with the Canberra boys here - expecting to see a bit if the Viking clap during this game.

NEWS ROCKS LEAGUE COMMUNITY The Stanthorpe sporting community especially the Rugby League community has been rocked by the recent death of popular former player and current coach of the Girls Under 17 League Tag team Leon Karena.

Karena will be remembered as an uncompromising talented forward who was a cornerstone player for the Gremlins for several seasons. He also played several seasons for Valley's cricket club.

To Leon's family and friends we all extend our heartfelt sympathy at this tough time.

VISITORS AND LOCALS ENJOY WEEKEND OF GOLF Conditions were perfect for visiting golfers from the Kilcoy district and several Brisbane clubs as they joined local players in a busy weekend on the greens in Stanthorpe over the May long weekend.

For 19 years Jeff Ihle and Biz Ihle have sponsored the American Foursome played

on the Saturday of the May long weekend and the club was pleased to announce they will be back next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

In American Foursome players hit the tee shot and then swap over to play their partners ball for the second shot before proceeding with just one ball. Local members Santo Cavallaro and Scott Constable played well together and recorded the best score of the day. Hot on their heels were runners up Eric McLellan and Darryl Boekholt. Most minor prizes also went to local players with the visitors showing some notice in the run down.

A full field of local players, Kilcoy representatives and sponsor's guests got the competition underway with a shot gun start at 9.00 am.

The Kilcoy players must have had done some serious bonding and planning on Saturday night. They arrived dressed in very colourful attire for the day's competition.

Their planning and pre-match preparation paid off with Kilcoy players featuring in both first and second place.

Alan and Butch from Kilcoy teamed up with Lea Hurse from Stanthorpe to take the honours for the day. Lea, who has just joined the club, not only finished the day with a competition win but also left with a swag of prizes from the multi-draw raffle.

In second place was the team of Biz Ihle, Oaksey and Hep, not too far away on scores.

Local pride was restored to a degree with Stanthorpe teams featuring in first and second run downs as well as top prize for 'ladies only' team consisting of Lorraine Evans, Neta Thouard and Lyn Ludlow.

It was a very busy and successful weekend of golf for players and the club. The Stanthorpe Golf Club thanks not only the sponsors and players for their input but also the small army of volunteers without whom the weekend would not have been such a success.

After such a busy weekend things are sure to be a little calmer when players hit the fairways and greens in the May monthly medal and putting competition sponsored by Mark and Racheal Hendry.

Played in conjunction with the Monthly Medal competition will be the first four rounds for the men and ladies club championships. There will be gross and nett winners in all grades but four rounds must to be played. Round one is self nominated but following rounds will be seeded draws. A Time sheet for Saturday's event is on the board at the clubhouse.

OPEN DAY ON RANGE The Inglewood sporting shooters association is busy preparing to hold an Open Day next Sunday (May 13) on the range at 749 Bosnjak Road Glenarbon.

Bring your .22 rifle and enjoy a fun day of shooting or bring your spurs and join in the Cowboys shoots. Everyone is welcome to come 'n try. Last weekend the club held a clay shoot. Stephanie Dudgeon took the honours out scoring Tom Donald and Sam Privitera.

The placing were reversed in the DTL where it was Sam Priverta taking the honours ahead of Tom Donald (again the bridesmaid and Stephanie Dudgeon finished in third place.

Newcomer Bronny Southgate displayed uncanny judgement for distance and had the top combined 12 hoops in the two games. This was an outstanding result as both games were shortened to 11 and first to seven respectively and she is certainly displaying a natural talent for the game. Shirley Page, Bev Sullivan and Elaine Brown each had the next best combined score of nine.

Bronny teamed with Justin Liddy to defeated Elaine Brown and Pauline Inglis 11-9.

The second group played a full length game and Bev Sullivan playing with Shirley Page won their match against Marian Castles and Kath Hopgood 13 - 7.

NUMBERS ON THE RISE Numbers are building at Association Croquet which is pleasing for organisers.

Last week Heather Widderick teamed -up with Val Richardson and played Peter Tunbridge and Margaret Dickenson. On their way to a 25 -15 win, Margaret scored a break of three and a peel. Her partner also contributed to the win with a peel. Well done!

Carol Verwey and Grace Howard played Effey Russell and Val Shephard. This was a close match and Carol and Grace got home by just one point. The final score was 15 to 14.

Andrea Denkewitz playing Pat Schnoor and Joy Newman and came from behind in the game to score a 26-20 win.

A small group played Ricochet on Thursday morning. John Draper scored a convincing 26-18 win over Peter Tunbridge but both recorded breaks of two hoops in succession at least twice.

Andrea Denkewitz partnered Bron Southgate in a game against Jenny Tunbridge. It was an even contest for much of the game before Tunbridge game away with a 26-20 win after also score two breaks of two during the game.

Gateball was played on Friday morning. In the first round of games Andrea Denkewitz, Les Williams and Heather Widderick formed Team One to play Jenny Tunbridge, Grace Howard, Pat Schnoor and John Draper (Team Two).

by Bill Golding and Val Fancourt joined Team Two. The second game also went the way of Team Two with a 16-11 score line.

Team One turned their fortunes around in the third game. Les Williams played well helping his side to victory scoring two agaris. The final score was 16 - 7.

The last game of the day was a tight low scoring affair with honours going to Team Two who recorded a narrow 9-8 win to finish the day on a winning note.

REDBACKS DEBUT NEW JERSEY The Warwick Redbacks debuted their new jersey's last weekend proudly featuring their new sponsors sponsor GJ Gardner Homes in the game against the South Toowoomba Bombers.

Unfortunately there backs were not able to christen the jersey's with a win as the Bombers put an end to the Redbacks unbeaten streak. In a tough contest the Redbacks suffered injuries to key players and finished the game with just 17 players.

The bombers hit the ground running and took an early lead and were never headed and despite the Redbacks mounting a fight back the final score was a telling 72-44 in the visitors favour.

Andrew Bardsley and Tyhe Clarkson continued their good form while Kris Millard and Shane Iles also played very well.

Brent Walker, Brendan Iles and Jack Fletcher are just three of the players on the injury list and fans will be hoping that with a bye this week all three key players will be fit for the game against Goondiwindi the following week at Riddles Oval.

The Redbacks are now in third spot on the competition ladder.

TIGER COUNTRY 1918-2018 The Tenterfield Tigers are not only busy notching up wins since joining the Group 19 competition they are also busily planning celebrations for their Centenary.

The Tigers club is turning 100 and plans are well underway to celebrate with a roar not a whimper. The Tigers played their first game on July 13 1918 and on Saturday July 28 2018 the Tigers will run on to Rugby League Park 100 years later to take on the Warialda Wombats. The club now playing in the NSW CRL Group 19 but has played an integral part in the Border Rugby League competition in recent years.

A meet and greet BBQ will be held at Rugby League Park combined with the launch of the Tenterfield Rugby League

100 year book.

Following the game the club will be holding a Centenary Ball at the Memorial Hall in Tenterfield. There will be more details as they come to hand closer to the date but if you played with or against the Tigers save that date. It is sure to be a great evening.

The committee organising the Centenary festivities, led by President, Brendan Minns is on the hunt for memorabilia, press cuttings photos or other items of interest to display at the home game celebrations.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS WIN BACK 47TH BATTALION TROPHY The Clydesdales failed by a narrow margin to go back to back in the 47th Battalion Carnival on the weekend. In a thrilling final the Clydesdales went down 12-8 to the team arch rivals the Sunshine Coast.

Toowoomba took the lead just after the half time break and looked dangerous.

The Falcons finally got their share of possession in the second half and penalties and mistakes enabled the visitors to make their way up the field. With just 10minutes left on the clock they managed to regain the lead. With the score at 10-8 the Clydesdales were denied a final chance to steal the game when the referee deemed interference after a chip and chase from Matt Duggan.

The Clydesdales final roll of the dice was denied in the dying stages of the game, after the referee waved off apparent interference on Chown after he re-gathered a chip kick from Matt Duggan.

Toowoomba coach Chris McEwen said his side did themselves no favours with missed opportunities and gifting the Falcons chances of their own.

The TRL competition moves on this weekend with Warwick hosting South's, Wattles playing Pittsworth at home and the Stanthorpe side also travelling to Pittsworth.

CLAY TARGET CLUB Warwick Clay Target Club attracts big field for Annual Shoot A diverse field of competitors from all over southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales descended on the Warwick Clay Target Club on Sunday for the historic club's Annual Shoot.

A field of more than 70 competitors plus visitors braved the windy conditions for a highly successful competition. Competitors came from Richmond River in NSW, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Texas, Goondiwindi and Ballandean as well as Warwick. Three major events on the program were well supported with trophies provided by valued local sponsors, Warwick Outdoors and Sports, Pro Tactical, Warwick Hotel and Roulston Builders.
