Splash of colour for retirees By Rowan Forster Pakenham Rotary Club have joined forces with Dulux to create a "vibrant" arts studio in the Millhaven Lodge. Retirees will have the opportunity to paint, create and forge their own creations, displaying them in a onceempty hall inside the Ahern Road village. Dulux selflessly provided the paint to Rotary volunteers, who put their skills to use. The club's community service head Ian Wake said it was a pleasure to spruce up a bland part of the lodge. "We're extremely grateful for everyone who lent a hand to make this happen," he said."Hopefully the residents will get some good use out of it.

"It's not fair. I pay my rates and am entitled to feel safe on the path. However, under Cardinia Shire's Road Management Plan, footpaths are only required to be repaired if they have an imperfection that causes a lip of more than 20 millimetres. Council's Infrastructure Manager Andrew Barr said the footpath in Main Street is regularly inspected due to the high number of people using it."As a high pedestrian area, we inspect the footpath in Pakenham's Main Street every six months, with additional inspections conducted if community members contact us to
report any concerns," he said. For some residents living in Cardinia Shire's fringe townships, the Main Street footpath is better than having no footpath at all. "We've urged council to build a footpath down our street for years, and they've only just agreed to recently," Beaconsfield's Jamie Donohue said. "I think there's more necessity to build footpaths near dangerous roads." "It's a huge safety issue when kids have to walk along the side of the road to get to school - an accident waiting to happen."

Criticism of Pakenham's Main Street footpath has continued, with yet another resident taking a painful tumble. Jennifer Wanless contacted the Gazette after her mother fell for a second time, citing the "uneven surface" as the cause. The list of her injuries was severe, left with a fractured knee, a fractured hand and facial bruising after the two incidents. According to Ms Wanless, the list of those who have stumbled and fallen in Main Street is growing.
"Three people a week fall in Main Street suffering various injuries, some of which are serious," she said. "I found a number of issues with the path when I met with council." It comes just weeks after 92-year-old Kathy Kitchin told the Gazette of her trip in Main Street, when her foot caught an uneven surface of the path. Mrs Kitchin suggested the footpath be upgraded using rates. "I've asked the council to fix it up and nothings been done," she said. 12386172-EPJ18-18
