Major upgrades to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road in Cranbourne has been unveiled as part of a $2.2 billion State Budget commitment.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan joined VicRoads Regional Director Aidan McGann and Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards, in making the announcement in Cranbourne on Wednesday 2 May, saying the project will “fix local roads and get people home sooner.”

A four-kilometre section of Narre WarrenCranbourne Road will be duplicated between Thompsons Road and the South Gippsland Highway, from one lane to two lanes in each direction to slash congestion for more than 33,000 vehicles which rely on this road each day.

The existing Berwick-Cranbourne Road roundabout will be upgraded to traffic lights and there’ll be new traffic lights at the intersection with the South Gippsland Highway.

There’ll be further intersection upgrades along the road and new shared walking and cycling paths.

The works will be part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Suburban Roads Upgrade - the biggest investment in suburban roads in Victoria’s history - to fix 22 key suburban arterials and create more than 4,200 jobs.

As part of the Suburban Roads Upgrade package, several other key routes through Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs will be upgraded including the roundabouts at Thompsons Road/Frankston-Dandenong Road and Thompsons Road/Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road which will be replaced with traffic lights.

Widening Pound Road West/Remington Drive, Hampton Park from two to four lanes between Abott’s Road and South Gippsland Highway, including a new bridge over the Cranbourne line was also listed under the package.

Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the duplication of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road would improve journeys and reliability through Cranbourne.

Casey’s pokies win

By Brendan Rees Poker money from Lynbrook Hotel will be handed over to Casey Council to distribute to not-for-profit community groups after new conditions were imposed on the hotel's licence.

After years of lobbying from the Lynbrook community, Casey Council and Federal Member for Holt Anthony Bryne, the Lynbrook Hotel has finally been forced to make $68,000 of annual community contributions from poker machines over a four-and-half year period to Casey Council.

It is understood that when the Lynbrook Hotel was granted its licence for 55 electronic gaming machines, the licensee agreed to make $100,000 of community contributions over five years to the Lynbrook community which was never upheld.

The Lynbrook Residents Association has been "fighting a long running battle" with the Lynbrook Hotel to get them to honour their commitment to the community.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) handed down the amended condition on the Lynbrook Hotel's licence in February this year.

Casey Council Officer Michael Pollard told councillors during their council meeting on 1 May, that should the licensee fail to meet its obligation, in whole or part, the use of all electronic gaming machines (EGMs) would have to cease immediately.

"The legal advice sought was particularly pertaining to areas governing structures that need to be put in place," he said.

"It's certainly is about establishing appropriate governing structures and accepting there is an element of risk, reputational risk, and potential conflicts of interest."

Casey Councillors voted to receive annual funds from the Lynbrook Hotel on 1 May - but

Cr Wayne Smith said: "This is not about supporting or not supporting gaming machines."

"History tells us that unless we get involved that the distribution of the money can't be guaranteed to stay local," he said.

Dissenting councillor Tim Jackson said: "It's really the governance issues and legal issues that have me against this."

LRA president Jason Wood said: "We would prefer for Council to opt-in, and as such, we are very happy with the outcome of last Tuesday's council meeting."

"Having Council oversee the disbursement of the funds would provide a fair distribution for groups in the areas local to the hotel," he said.

Spokesman for the director of The Alliance for Gambling Reform Tim Costello said Casey Council should be careful about not getting entangled with the gambling industry.

"The Lynbrook Hotel has a long history of failing to deliver promised payments," he said.

"It is reasonable for council to be involved to ensure these mandatory payments ordered by the regulator actually find their way to the community or into gambling harm prevention programs."

Mr Costello said it was important that any payments are not used to "dilute community opposition" to the spread of gambling harm, including the application by the Lynbrook Hotel for an additional 20 machines which is due to be decided by council in the coming weeks.

Motorcyclist dies in late night crash Police are seeking the driver of a car possibly linked to a fatal motorcycle crash in Cranbourne overnight (2 May).

The male rider was travelling south on South Gippsland Highway when his motorbike left the roadway about 11.25pm, police say.

He was treated by emergency services but died prior to being taken to hospital.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the crash.

They wish to speak to the driver of a red sedan seen immediately prior to the crash.

Police are also investigating a car fire in the car park of Rangebank Primary School, Lesdon Avenue, Cranbourne just after 4.30am this morning (3 May).

No link has yet been confirmed to the earlier fatal crash, police say.

Nasty ‘trips’ not welcome from old train crossing

By Brendan Rees People with mobility scooters, prams or wheelchairs are up in arms about a pedestrian level crossing which they say has narrow barriers, hindering their ability to move around.

Casey councillors voted to investigate access issues to the pedestrian crossing - which is situated on a disused Leongatha railway line alongside the South Gippsland Highway between Cranbourne Railway Station and Cranbourne Pre-Mix - as a matter of urgency during their meeting on 1 May. Council will also look at whether to seal an uneven footpath that is littered with potholes between Cranbourne Pre-Mix and Australia Post, which is also causing problems for pedestrians.

Casy Council Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said the level crossing was a "ridiculous situation" and "quite dangerous."

"I've got a double stroller so I can't fit through and have anyone else come through at the same time.

"When it's busy no one wants to wait for a mum with a pram," she said.

Ms Easy said when using the uneven footpath: "I push the pram through it and there's built up gravel - it's a struggle to get the pram through."

Metro spokesman Marcus Williams said: "We are absolutely committed to making sure the network is accessible for everyone to use safely and easily."

"We are happy to discuss any proposals council has," he said.

Mr Williams confirmed Metro had not been contacted by Casey Council at this stage.

Star News contacted Metro, VicTrack and Public Transport Victoria who say they do not own the footpath - which is not part of Casey Council's responsibility.

A report will come back to council in June.

Local resident Ian Brandon, who uses a mobility scooter, said the level crossing was restrictive: "You've got to do a sharp right and then a sharp right. It's like driving a B-double through the back streets of Collingwood - it's just not going to happen."

"You don't even have to remove the whole lot. If you took those four poles out and the bit of mesh you could just drive straight through it," he said.

He said the pathway leading to the crossing was quite bumpy, adding "It's like four-wheeldriving."

"It's not a major concern but it needs to be fixed before someone actually does hurt themselves."

Mother-of-two Monique Easy said the pedestrian crossing was painfully inconvenient.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk There's been a bit of dumping about lately - and I don't mean for the hard rubbish collection.

In fact, hard rubbish has almost become a recycling effort in itself, so quickly do the vultures hit the nature strips.

No, I'm referring more to the clowns who love a bit of a dump in the wee hours, old tyres usually being their weapon of choice.

It is hard to think of a more blatantly selfish and disruptive act.

If you see a pile of tyres by the roadside, you're seeing the actions of someone who has broken the social compact.

Home to redback spiders and other vermin, they're a tip fire waiting to happen. And don't get me started on the plain old ugliness of them that is a blight on our suburbs.

It's time we applied a zero tolerance policy to these creeps who are doing the dirty on the rest of us, So - watch out for them like a hawk, and be ready to get a number plate to the authorities.

The amenity of our public areas is for all of us, and it's not theirs to take, And for the powers that be? Well, the need to speed up the clean-ups and put up cameras as needed, so it becomes abundantly clear to the dumpers that this simply isn't on.

The principle is no different to a broken window or graffiti creating further problems.

Sooner or later, any area will fulfill the prophecy of becoming what it looks like.

In much the same way as we educated our society to shun drink drivers, we have to apply exactly the same policy to these losers.

Because if you dump and drive, you're a bloody idiot.

By Brendan Rees Stephanie Blicavs is a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, but to her students at Tulliallan Primary School, she's Mrs Blicavs.

The Australian Opals Basketball player showed off her gold medal which she won on the Gold Coast in a visit to Tulliallan Primary School on Tuesday 1 May. The 27-year-old champion began her teaching career at Tulliallan Primary School which opened to the Cranbourne North community in 2017.

Mrs Blicavs captained the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL last year and won the MVP award.

School principal Kathy Sharp said the school was very proud of her.

"Mrs Blicavs has been a wonderful role model for our students showing dedication, team work and work ethic being a teacher as well as her commitment to basketball" she said.

Mrs Blicavs will continue to balance her commitment to basketball and casual teaching at Tulliallan this year.

Thousands join in for Vaisakhi festival

By Brendan Rees More than 3000 people gathered at Cranbourne Racecourse to celebrate the Sikh religious holiday Vaisakhi on Sunday, 29 April.

Run by the Casey Cultural Club, the historic and religious event is celebrated in April every year. For Sikhs, Vaisakhi marks the foundation of the Khalsa community of Sikhs.

For the people of Punjab and for many Hindus, the festival is their traditional solar new year, a harvest festival and an opportunity to visit temples, meet friends and party over festive foods.

Casey Councillor Damien Rosario congratulated the Casey Cultural Club for hosting such a successful event.

“It was a fantastic feeling of energy and spirit celebrating Vaisakhi with our Sikh community and dignitaries,“ he said.

Cowardly teen attacks

The Vaisakhi festival was attended by Sepal Patel, Casey councillor Damien Rosario, Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera, Simarjit Singh Bains, Manoj Kumar, Pauline Richards and other guests.

Two Berwick teenagers were terrifyingly robbed by a gang of thugs as they were sitting in a carriage of a Pakenham bound train on Sunday morning, 6 May. It's alleged the victims, believed to be about 19-years-old, were asleep when the thugs approached them at about at about 5.30am.

Senior Constable Alison Johnson said the victims were then awoken by two to three men who have then tried to grab their phones.

She said the thugs, described of African appearance, began bashing the victims, with one being punched to the face, causing bruising and bleeding to his nose.

The train stopped at Hallam Railway Station where nearby police patrolling the area arrested a 17-year-old Hampton Park boy, Sen Const Johnson said.

A phone and wallet, believed to be one of the victim's was located on the man.

The boy was charged with robbery and theft, and bailed from Narre Warren police station to appear at the Children's Court on 1 June.

Sen Const Johnson said police were awaiting CCTV from the train carriage to determine further charges.

"Speaking to the victims there weren't that many people on the train," she said.

Five Pakenham men, aged between 17 and 21 years were also arrested and released from Narre Warren Police Station without charges being laid.

The victims were not taken to hospital.

Honouring cultural pride The City of Casey has celebrated its rich multiculturalism by honouring three local community groups with a plaque each on the Wall of Global Friendships.

The wall celebrates and acknowledges Casey's cultural diversity and features a collection of inscribed plaques from local multicultural groups that have settled in or contribute to Casey's rich culture.

The feature, located at Balla Balla Community Centre, recognises the contribution of various local groups, promotes friendships and goodwill between Casey's cultural groups.

It also provides a meeting place for ceremonies and other special occasions, as well as a unique outdoor community space.

The Cultural Historical Association of Rodriguans and Mauritians in Victoria (C.H.A.R.M), The Indian Federation Association of Victoria and The Spanish Widows each had a plaque unveiled that was dedicated to their group on Saturday 28 April.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said: "It's groups such as these that give members of our community a sense of belonging, and an opportunity to take pride in their culture and the diversity that they bring to Casey."

Bakers Delight at Casey Central Shopping Centre is calling on the community to 'give breast cancer the finger bun.'

The store, which has been decked out in pink, is raising money for people diagnosed with breast cancer through its annual Pink Buns campaign which runs until May 23 with 100 per cent Pink Bun sales going to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

Store manager Melanie Plunkett called on the community to get behind the campaign.

"Last we raised over $4,000 for the BCNA and this year we are hoping to raise much more," she said.

"This means so much to us and many people in the community as at some stage in our lives breast cancer will touch one of us."

A special Pink Bun carry bag for $5 can also be purchased with 100 per cent of the sale going to BCNA, or people may leave a message of support on a Pink Lady silhouette, or donate their spare change in the tins on the counter.

Zookeepers by moonlight

By Brendan Rees Conservation and animal welfare were on the agenda for the Australasian Society of Zoo Keeping (ASZK), which held its annual conference in Pearcedale last week.

Hosted by Moonlit Sanctuary on Friday 4 May, the conference provided an opportunity for zoo keepers to come together as an industry to share ideas, discuss zoo developments and to network.

More than 100 delegates from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea attended the meeting where they discussed a range of topics based on the theme: ‘Keep seeking creative keeping’.

President of the ASZK Michael Drinkwater said workshops were held to share ideas and provide an educational opportunity for all staff members.

“This about how we as zookeepers in Australasia can contribute to an international project which is based around helping under-educated and under-privilege keepers throughout some of the poorer regions in the world,” he said.

“We did an activity based exercise which the keepers had to use a few very rudimentary basic items to build some equipment to solve a problem. That exercise is about contributing to programs and helping zoo keepers internationally.”

Mr Drinkwater said the overarching question for zoos was their role in conservation which was an “ever changing space.”

“Conservation is also about people rather than it being about animals and their environment,” he said.

He said although Moonlit Sanctualy was a smaller wildlife park, it had taken significant steps in wildlife conservation, particularly in protecting the critically endangered Orangebellied Parrot.

Moonlit Sanctuary director Michael Johnson said he was pleased with the outcome of the conference.

“Most of the conference delegates were keen to look at our facilities,” he said. “It gives us some recognition as a growing and increasingly important wildlife park in Australia.”

Senior keeper Lisa Tuthill was also recipient of an award for her outstanding contribution to zoos and wildlife parks.

Top honour goes to student

By Brendan Rees A student of St Peter’s College in Cranbourne has been recognised for her service as a community leader after taking a prestigious catholic award.

Year 10 student Mikayla Van der Velden was presented with the Fr James Wall Bursary at the Diocese Awards Dinner in Traralgon on Friday, 17 April.

The highly-regarded honour is awarded to a catholic secondary school student who demonstrates leadership potential in a range of areas including science, the arts, public speaking, sporting activities, community service and social justice activities.

Mikayla will be awarded a $4000 bursary through the support of the Catholic Development Fund to assist with school fees and expenses in Years 11 and 12.

The dinner was held at Premier Function Centre and was attended by representatives of

Diocese of Sale Catholic Education, and staff, students and family from the 44 schools within this Diocese.

Principal Chris Black said Mikayla was a deserved recipient as she was involved in all areas of the college and community.

“She has been a Forum Leader during all of her school years and served as Student Representative Council in 2017,” he said.

“Mikayla has been an active member of the College Youth Ministry Program, where she aims to achieve multiple goals with one activity.

“She is involved with the City of Casey youth outreach service and has been a key organiser of youth arts events providing an outlet for young people to use their gifts and talents within their community.

“The St Peter’s College community warmly congratulates Mikayla on her award,” Mr Black said.

Their new lease on life

By Brendan Rees A new respite centre has opened in Cranbourne to give much needed support to families and carers.

Blairlogie Living and Learning Inc has leased a brand new, nine unit facility which has started providing a home for people with a disability and respite for their full time carers.

Blairlogie chief executive Carolyn Carr said for too long people with a disability had very little choice when it came to accommodation.

She said the centre would provide affordable housing with access to appropriate sup-

ports to enable people with a disability to live as independently as possible.

"People are often forced to live in group homes, with people they do not know. This project offers people an alternative model of accommodation," Ms Carr said.

Natalie, who asked not to reveal her surname, she was excited to move out of home for the first time and use the new facility.

She is waiting for her National Disability Insurance Scheme plan to be finalised before moving into her unit.

"I am 47-years-old, I don't want to live with mum and dad. This is a dream come true for

me," Natalie said.

Property owner of the accommodation site Colin Butler said he was delighted to be involved in a project that was benefiting people who were often marginalised.

"When the business and community sectors come together really exciting things can happen. We hope to do future projects with Blairlogie," he said.

Blairlogie Living and Learning has been supporting people with a disability since 1987.

Call for garden volunteers

By Brendan Rees Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne is on the lookout for volunteers.

The Garden Ambassador Team engage wants more people to engage with visitors providing general information, insights into plant collections, history, landscaping, conservation and projects.

They also conduct daily garden walking tours, assist with workshops and attend events to promote Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

New volunteers will be given full training and a uniform plus support from the current group of volunteers. Training will occur over winter to have the new Garden Ambassadors on board by spring.

Michael revs up for race

By Brendan Rees Like the rest of his family, car racing is in the blood of Michael Gibson.

He was only 10-years-old when he started driving go-karts. Now, the keen motoring enthusiast is gearing up for the Historic Winton race in Benalla later this month.

The 33-year-old from Cannons Creek will race his 1983 Lola - which can reach a top speed of 240km/h - on the Winton Motor Raceway.

Michael says it’s an exceptional car, and has won most races in its class. He also won the Australian Sports 2000 Championship three years ago.

“The car is quite competitive. It always punches above its weight,” he said. “It’s a well sorted out little car that’s for sure.”

He says the car, which has a two-litre Ford engine with a Hewland transmission, has been raced in historic events all over Australia.

“It’s just an easy car to run - it’s a fun car to drive.”

Michael says he’s always wanted to race professionally but says people don’t “realise it’s not about your talent but how big your budget is.”

“I was luckily enough signed with Dragon super car team for a brief time until they wanted excessive amounts of money so I had to back away from that.”

A mechanical engineer by profession, Michael also works on a collection of racing cars in Dandenong South.

“I’m a third generation racing driver,” he says. “My grandfather raced, my uncle’s raced; my father raced sports cars. I had two uncles in Formula One as mechanics so it’s grown from there.

“My racing doesn’t happen without my sponsors Apex Deal and Liqui Moly.“ Historic Winton will be held at Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla on May 25-27.

FOCUS ON … MOTHER'S DAY

Give a card for cancer Krystel’s mum Karen has always been her pillar of strength, her confidant and her greatest fan. So when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Krystel said it was a moment when the ‘tables turned’ and she needed to be there for her mum.

“For a lady who was the strongest woman I’ve ever met, seeing her on the lounge after her first chemotherapy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face,” Krystel said.

“She was so physically unwell that it broke down not only her strong motherly presence but her entire character. I was upset for her, for

my sisters and for my stepfather who had absolutely no idea how to make it better.”

Diagnosed at just 48, Karen had no family history of breast cancer and her diagnosis was a shock for the entire family. Today, following treatment, she is well and enjoying life with her children and grandchildren.

“We know the treatments mum received and benefitted from are thanks to breast cancer clinical trials research,” Krystel said.

“Mum and I also know there are many other women, other mums perhaps, who need our help because better treatment options for

their type of breast cancer have not yet been discovered.”

Krystel and Karen are sharing their story to support the annual Mother’s Day Research Appeal conducted by Breast Cancer Trials. They’re encouraging people to donate to Breast Cancer Trials as their Mother’s Day gift for their mum. Clive dishes up the deals

By Narelle Coulter Narre Warren entrepreneur Clive Canal was holidaying in Tasmania when the inspiration for his foodie business, Whozcookn, struck.

Staying in the rural town of Stanley two years ago, it wasn’t long before Clive had exhausted all the town’s eating options.

“Within a few days we’d gone through everything. I did some research and knew that within that region there was amazing produce but we just couldn’t tap into it,“ Clive said.

“People like myself who were travelling through had no network. I thought ’I’d love to taste some of this stuff but can’t’.“ Clive’s solution was an app that would let users know all the restaurants, cafes and takeaway businesses within a few kilometres offering what he describes as “multi-cultural, authentic food“.

He named the app Whozcookn, giving it a deliberate Aussie flavour.

“There are other apps out there but none of them are Aussie,“ he explained. “This is the only home grown one.“ As well as the app, which will be released later this year, Whozcookn has grown to include an active Facebook “community“ and cooking workshops.

The workshops specialise in traditional, ethnic dishes led by talented Melbourne cooks. 2017 Masterchef contestant Pia Gava led an Italian themed workshop in Berwick earlier this year.

Clive’s love of food comes from his own multi-cultural background. His mother is Colombian and father Mauritian. His parents met in London and emigrated to Australia in 1987 arriving on Clive’s 7th birthday.

He praises his mum as a great cook and when he wants a home-cooked meal it is her kitchen he visits.

Clive Canal, the brains behind Whozcookn, at Lucy's Divine Cakes in Hampton Park. 179131 “As a child I remember her cooking Mauritian noodles which are beautiful and South American dishes, such as Bandeja Paisa, were also staple favourites within our family.“ An industrial designer by trade, Clive gave up his job in the motor industry to focus on Whozcookn.

He has been working with a tech team for more than two years to design and refine the app.

“I had a look at what was available in the market in terms of apps and found there were others like Menulog and Uber Eats but what I found was that some of these apps had a scatter gun approach to making food available.

“Whozcookn has the reverse approach.

It’s more niche. It’s all about dishes and cuisines and recipes that have been passed down through generations and refined over the years.“ Clive signed up for the New Enterprise In-

centive Scheme (NEIS) funded by the Federal Government, which gave him the skills to develop a business plan.

He also threw himself into every networking and business event offered by the City of Casey, sometimes attending three or four events a week.

The development phase has also involved a lot of eating as he tests cafes and restaurants who want to sign up.

“It’s a tough job but lots of fun,“ he said, grinning.

"I took it as a blessing that I live in Melbourne. It is the perfect hub to create something like this because there are so many different influences and nationalities.

“People are willing to try new things and step outside their comfort zones.“ Connection is a word that comes up often in conversation with Clive.

He loves the cooking workshop concept for

its power to bring people together and is delighted that the Facebook page has become a forum for home cooks to share recipes, food snaps and experiences.

“Whozcookn is not just a business, it’s a community,“ he said.

“Now there is a place you can go and connect with the brand itself. You can have that tangible experience, you can immerse yourself in this whole cooking workshop concept.“ Clive runs his twin businesses from the Waterman Centre in Narre Warren.

“I love it, it’s amazing. You get support, make connections, it’s a wonderful environment.“ To help finance Whozcookn, Clive started a second business, Symbiotic Design Company, which produces 3D virtual models and animations for the manufacturing industry, helping them to promote their business and products.

He encourages other young entrepreneurs to take a risk and follow their dream.

“If you have an idea and you have a dream, then definitely pursue your dream, follow your heart. But it’s equally important to be practical and logical. Do your research, study the market, look at the trends and see if your idea or concept fits in the current market.“ Within a year Clive hopes Whozcookn “covers most of the popular states in Australia“. “ I hope the community will be strong and healthy and for it (the brand) to be part of people’s lives.

“To be honest, and it might sound corny, I don’t want it to be just a business. I want it to be a movement.“

Innovation is the key in this crowded marketplace

By Narelle Coulter The economic potential of startups is set to be harnessed in the Casey Cardinia Region with a new initiative called the INNovation Crowd.

A committee of educators, business people and representatives of both councils under the lead of the City of Casey has been working on the project for nearly a year and hope to launch the initiative in July.

Digital strategist and mentor Judy Pridmore is one of the committee members.

The committee also includes representatives from Federation Uni and Casey Technical School and local businesses like Successful Endeavours and Gaia Skin Naturals.

Ms Pridmore said the vision was to create

Initiatives will include meet up groups, hackathons and startup boot camps to fill a gap in the region.

Federation Uni will host workshops and training opportunities, with the soon to be opened Casey TAFE providing unique spaces and technology for startups.

Much of what can be achieved under the INNovation Crowd umbrella depends on funding from Launch Vic. Whether the region has been successful in its funding application will be known in the next few weeks.

Ms Pridmore said if successful the committee hoped to be able to fund an expert entre-

preneur in residence at co-working spaces like the The Waterman Centre in Narre Warren.

Federation University Senior Lecturer Dr Tim Harrison said the university was proud to be involved in the INNOvation Crowd.

Children and educators have banded together to raise $200 for the Cranbourne fire brigade.

Clarendon Street Childcare Cooperative Cranbourne, a not-for-profit organisation, organised the sale of raffle tickets over a twoweek period and presented a cheque of the total money raised to the brigade on 17 April.

Director Janine Morris said the funds were raised were in appreciation for the brigade’s annual visit to the centre in teaching children

about fire safety and the role firefighters have in the community.

“Our children’s families and educators purchased tickets and with this we were able to donate $200 to them. On their return visit our children presented them with a handmade card and cheque,” said Ms Morris.

Cranbourne CFA Senior Station Officer Ian Glass said the brigade was highly appreciative of the donation which would go towards buying new equipment and assisting with their daily operations.

Keenan's meteoric rise

By Russell Bennett Cranbourne North teen sensation Keenan O'Hanlon is small in stature, but he has the heart of a lion and the kind of sheer athletic talent that most people could only dream of.

And Keenan has an insatiable desire to continue to better himself, which is taking him ahead in leaps and bounds in the athletics world.

Due to his performances throughout the 2017/18 Australian domestic season, and his astonishing history of medals in the long jump and triple jump, Keenan was recently selected in the 2018 Athletics Victoria Target Talent Program's (AVTTP) horizontal jumps squad.

The Target Talent Program is the early talent identification program into Athletics Australia's high performance pathway, and has been designed to support elite junior athletes, their coaches and supporters make the transition to national senior representation.

In the past three years in a row, Keenan has won both the Little Athletics Victoria long jump and triple jump state titles in the under 13s, under 14s, and under 15s.

His triple jump personal best is now 13.39 metres, while in long jump it's 6.56 metres.

What makes this all the more staggering is that at 5'5", or 165 centimetres, Keenan estimates he's the shortest in his Year 10 class by about five inches.

The 15-year-old goes to Alkira Secondary College, where he's received invaluable support throughout his athletic endeavours.

Mark Jouvelet from Cranbourne Little Athletics has also been an invaluable source of support in his time coaching Keenan.

His current coach, Chloe Edwards from the Frankston Athletic Club, has also picked up where he left off.

Keenan O'Hanlon is an athletics star on the rise. 180675 Keenan admits that he sometimes wonders what he could achieve if he was that little bit taller, but he's still got plenty of time for his body to continue to mature.

In the meantime, his astonishing performances speak for themselves.

His list of athletics medals - many of which

are gold - from over the years is simply too long to mention.

Next, he wants to continue to try his hand at high jump - which he enjoys "just for fun", despite the face he can already leap well above his height. He's also dipping his toe in the water of sprinting, where he made a state

But arguably Keenan's strongest trait is his ability to find his best effort from deep within, right when he needs it most.

More than anything, that's what ensures he's a star on the rise.

Bailey's basketball brilliance continues to shine through

By Hayley Wildes Bailey Jankovic could've decided it was all too hard. He could've given up.

Instead, he adapted and found a new way to compete, and excel, at the sport he loves.

Fifteen-year-old Berwick local, Bailey was born eight weeks premature and lives with cerebral palsy. Up until last year, he was playing basketball in able-bodied competitions, but since transitioning to wheelchair basketball, he has truly found his calling.

"I played able-bodied basketball for about five seasons and as I got to around Under-16s, they were getting too fast and strong for me."

Bailey said.

"I thought I'd give wheelchair basketball a go, to see if I could actually keep up and become the person I wanted to be, but in wheelchair basketball."

Just nine months after taking up wheelchair basketball, Bailey is making a name for himself and last month represented Victoria in the Kevin Coombs Cup - the national championship for wheelchair basketball in Australia.

After a tough selection process, Bailey was named in the Victorian squad.

"I was so pumped." Bailey said of finding out he made the squad. "I got an email and it was the best feeling in the world."

The tournament took place in Geelong at the Australian Junior Championships. Bailey and his Victorian teammates took home the Gold medal, defeating Western Australia, 6860, in the Grand Final.

Despite trailing at half time, Bailey said the team never lost faith.

"Even though we were down [at half time], we just felt like we had the momentum going into the second half and especially when it reached the third quarter." He said.

"When we tied it up in the third, the roar of the crowd was just amazing - it went straight through me. Then when we scored again to hit the front, it was even louder."

The highlight of the tournament for Bailey was an easy choice.

"Receiving my gold medal at the closing ceremony - it was so amazing." Bailey said. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Bailey also wanted to thank all his mentors, coaches, teammates and supporters that have helped him along the way.

"They know who they are - I have heaps of mentors and I just want to thank them all."

A new chapter for Casey

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers have announced, as of late last week, that Big V basketball Division 1 Women's Head Coach Michael Davies has stepped down, due to personal reasons.

In a statement, Casey Basketball said Davies will still be involved with the club at a junior level.

"The Association is grateful for the time Michael has given over the years, and the many achievements he and his team have accomplished in his tenure as coach; including the clubs first ever championship in 2016." Casey said in the statement.

Alex Palazzolo, who has over 30 years of basketball experience including WNBL and SEABL head coaching roles, has taken over the position.

"Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help the Lady-Cavs, as they make their championship run for 2018."

In weekend action, the Cavs had five matchups and came away with three wins.

The State Championship Men went 1-1, claiming a win over Corio Bay on Saturday night, but were unable to contain Eltham on Sunday.

Against Corio Bay, the Cavs had three players score at least 20 points and claimed the win, 101-89.

Raheem Lemons (20 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals) was dominant as his incredible form continued. Meanwhile, Brandon Polk and Matt Donlan (21 points each) provided plenty of offence. Donlan drained 4/5 from beyond the arc.

With little time to rest, the Cavs took on Eltham the next day and just couldn't quite keep up as the Wildcats drained 15 triples.

The Youth League 2 Women took care of business against the Southern Peninsula Sharks, 77-60 - handing the Sharks their first loss of the season.

Lauren Tuplin was prominent, as she has been all season, posting 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Stephanie Leclerc (16 points, 5 rebounds) was an important factor in the game with plenty of energy as the Lady Cavs took over down the stretch.

Round 8 will see Casey's annual Pink Round take over Casey Stadium on Saturday. Casey will be wearing pink uniforms and raising funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

With the Youth League 1 Men tipping off at 4pm, followed by Division 1 Women and State Championship Men, it is an evening of basketball not to be missed.

Sunday will see the Division 1 Women and Youth League 1 Men head to Werribee and Camberwell respectively. The Youth League 2 Women travel to Werribee on Saturday night.

Competing at a home Commonwealth Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

For Tooradin-raised swimmer Josh Beaver, that opportunity and experience is something he will never forget.

Not only did Beaver compete, he came away with a bronze medal - in the hotly contested 200 metre backstroke event.

"A lot of time and effort went into that one particular swim, so to see it pan out the way it did, I was extremely happy and my coach was as well." Beaver said of his swim in the final.

His bronze capped an Australian sweep of the medals in the event as Mitch Larkin claimed gold and Bradley Woodward took home silver.

"It was pretty special to be a part of that 1-23 - that's the second time I've been able to do it." He said. "It's always good when you win a medal for your country, but to cap it off with a gold, silver and bronze for Australia, it was even more special."

The Australian fans were out in force every

night of the swimming schedule and a couple of weeks after the fact, Beaver is still lost for words regarding that tremendous support.

"We had legends of the sport talking to us about how special it was before the Games and then actually getting out there and witnessing it yourself, it's really hard to put into words how exactly it feels." He said.

"Having 12,000 people, including your family and friends, screaming for you is a very special feeling."

Beaver was one of only a handful of swimmers to march in the opening ceremony - another memorable experience.

"I was fortunate enough to march - I was one of only five swimmers that were able to march in the opening ceremony." He said.

"It was pretty special walking out in front of so many people and it definitely lived up to every expectation that I had."

Beaver recorded the fastest reaction time in the final and came home in a time of 1:57.04 - 0.94 seconds behind Larkin and an improvement of 1.69 seconds on his heat time.

Narre’s day of domination

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 4 (SPLIT ROUND) After what can only be described as an exhilarating opening 30 minutes down at Starling Road on Saturday, there was no inkling in the slightest of the complete and utter domination of Narre Warren thereafter.

The build-up was expected, both sides came in undefeated as one of the two sides who have improved remarkably in the opening three rounds. It had been since all the way back in 2010 that the Kangaroos had last bested the Magpies, and that long awaited win took 31 years to eventuate.

So, at quarter time, with the Kangaroos leading by a single point after both sides shared 10 goals between them, the game was set-up for an epic.

In the opening minute the tone was set for a potential shootout, with Aaron Wilson getting on the end of two influential touches by star Magpie Brad Scalzo, and from there, both sides looked ominous when entering their attacking fifty.

Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners summed it up perfectly after an exciting opening quarter.

"We don't always go there and play well, but the first quarter we started off well and we came in and were two points down which isn't ideal," he said.

But after some strong messages and home truths at quarter time, Shinners got his side firing, completely blowing the Kangaroos away in an epic second quarter that featured eight goals and an eventual 42-point lead.

The Magpies had completely broken the game apart through dare and vigor with their ball movement, and combined with silver service for their forwards, it was a recipe for disaster for Doug Koop's side.

Some spectators marveled in the Magpies' transition of the football, with one commenting on the "clinical" and "unique" nature of the side this season.

One of the more impressive bits of ball movement came in that quarter too - Josh Tonna took a superb intercept mark in the centre, before quickly playing on and spearing a ball towards half-forward, opening up the forward line for an eventual goal from point blank range by extremely impressive youngster Tom Miller.

The Magpies slammed on a further 16 goals in the second half, pushing the margin out to a whopping 130-points, in a statement of epic proportions, 29.18(192) to 9.8(62).

They ran in waves, and had over a dozen goalkickers, something Shinners points to as the biggest improver in their flawless start to 2018.

"It was a bit of a tongue lashing for the boys (at quarter time), but we finished the day with 15 goal kickers, we shuffled the side around a bit with players playing in different positions, which gave us a look at alternative measures for the future," the proud coach said.

"To finish the day like we did and to have that contribution from 15 blokes in our side was a pretty good effort - That's our whole thing from the start of the year, to get a good band of players together so we can have a good mix and not relying on one or two players every week, that's the biggest thing."

While it's perhaps hard to pin-point the clear standouts on an extraordinary day for the Magpies, the class of the likes of Scalzo, star midfielder Trent Cody, emerging defender Jesse Davies, as well as champions Michael Collins and Col McNamara proved pivotal.

On a dirty day for the Kangaroos, Tyler Clark, veteran Ben Tivendale as well as skipper Matthew Clarke could hold their heads high.

Officer needs to bounce back next week when they travel to Holm Park to take on Beaconsfield, fresh off a three figure win over Tooradin, while Narre Warren hosts Doveton.

Meanwhhile, Berwick continue to still find their feet and their form, but are doing exactly what is expected of them, chalk up the wins and continue to work towards their best.

But against a plucky Pakenham outfit, which is showing the early hallmarks of being a solid side, they had to work for their third win of the season, 5.10(40) to 15.8(98).

Stewart Kemperman's side showed enough class and experience to run away with a 58-point win at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday, in a six goal to one final term.

The game finally broken open for Kemperman's men in the final term, with a series of misses finally converting into a major, with an incredible hanger by the dynamic Harry Money resulting in a terrific running goal by defender Will Arthurson.

As expected, the Lions fell away after a terrific effort, with the Wickers then slamming on five more goals to push out the lead to something perhaps not reflective of the contest provided by Ash Green's side.

"There's still a bit to work on for us - the effort was there, but if we're talking about execution across four quarters, the consistency of that, it was an issue," Kemperman said of the game.

"We had a lot of the ball, but didn't use it as well as we should have, particularly going inside 50, so plenty to work on which is good."

However, Kemperman said his side's best form is not too far away ahead of a home clash against Tooradin on Saturday.

"There is elements and patches of it, we're getting closer and we need to tighten things up - we're not too far away I wouldn't have thought," he said.

Berwick will host the Seagulls at Edwin Flack Reserve in Round 5, while Pakenham would fancy its chances against Cranbourne at Casey Fields.

Down at Tooradin, Beaconsfield emphatically knocked off Tooradin by 100-points, with Nathan Langley and Jimmy Munro combining for an incredible 19 goals, 9.11(65) to 26.9(165).

The Seagulls stuck firm after a solid opening quarter, with both sides kicking straight and playing an electric brand of football that resulted in 11.4 kicked between them.

While the Eagles lead by six-points, they needed to keep scoring to stave off and eventually break down the home side's run.

And it was a second quarter to savour Casey Demons jet Jimmy Munro had the ball on a string and was making an impact up forward, while the much maligned Nathan Langley looked as ominous as he has since joining the club. Importantly for the Eagles, Langley was kicking straight, booting goals from set shots and snaps, while also tackling fiercely, and even booting a goal after superbly putting his body on the line and earning himself a free kick. Redbacks fight for victory

By Hayley Wildes SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 5 Keysborough was far too strong in a big wireto-wire win over Skye, 13.12 (90) to 4.9 (33). Tamas Siposs was best afield and Matthew Carnelley kicked four goals as the Burra remain undefeated.

The Doveton Eagles also showcased their class and remain undefeated after making light work of Caulfield, 22.15 (147) to 7.15 (57).

Peter Dye, Nick Battle and Enayte Samadi booted four goals each.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 3 Hampton Park fought out a tough win over Endeavour Hills, 10.5 (65) to 6.13 (49).

Endeavour Hills had their chances, but were unable to convert many of their attacking forays. Nathan Carver (four goals), Kane Bloxsidge and Ash Scott were best for Hampton Park, while Jarrod Marolla (three goals) and Nick Gay were impressive for Endeavour Hills.

Springvale Districts, meanwhile, defeated Hallam in what was a demolition of epic proportions - 32.27 (219) to 2.3 (15).

A whopping 15 individual goal kickers for Springvale Districts showcased their complete domination as Matthew Thompson and David Monaghan ran riot. In a dirty day for Hallam, Matthew Studd and Sean Gaitely battled valiantly.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 5 The Dandenong Redlegs were simply no match for Cerberus, 16.16 (112) to 5.7 (37).

Anthony Gaetano and Nick Ford battled hard, but Cerberus' team effort was evident as Michael Schwarz and Shannon Schonewille (four goals) led from the front.

Sandown, meanwhile, was ripped apart by the Frankston Dolphins 3.12 (30) to 20.14 (134). For the Cobras, Taylor Meyer, Joshua Hurford and James Tate stood strong in the loss.

Finally, Lyndale was unable to overcome a slow start as Lyndhurst stormed to a comprehensive win, 11.14 (80) to 7.6 (48). Charlie Gardiner and Hamish Browning (four goals) took over for Lyndhurst.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 5 A whopping 38 scoring shots against is enough to break any side, and for Pearcedale on the weekend, it proved way too much to handle.

The Panthers, now with a 1-4 record, paid for a slow start in their clash with Karingal, going down by 58 points, 12.8 (80) to 20.18 (138).

The home side fell by 31 points in the first quarter and was unable able to recover, with

Zach Campbell sends Pearcedale into attack. 180544 the Bulls slamming on 14 goals to 10 in the remaining three quarters to run out comfortable winners.

In a powerful display down forward, Matt Stanley (seven goals) and Blake Simpson (four goals) proved the difference, while Pearcedale

Chris gives Heat its Dew

By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne has added one of the most revered sporting coaches anywhere in the region, with former Victorian batsman Nick Jewell signing on as an assistant coach.

The 40-year-old, a former St Kilda champion and Frankston coach at Premier level, will oversee the development of the club’s brightest young players, in a role that has seen him have major success - particularly at Frankston - over the course of the last decade.

A 62-game veteran for the Victorian Bushrangers, Jewell has been dominating the Mornington Peninsula leagues for the last few years, with successful stints at both Sorrento and Main Ridge.

It is understood that Jewell was initially going to be part of a major coaching coup that included champion batsman Matthew Chasemore signing as the head coach, vacated by Prabath Nissanka, however, after virtually having the current Berwick star signed on, the 36-year-old declined the Swans’ offer and will likely remain with the Bears where he is currently contracted.

The Swans will be looking aggressively at improving its list after a disappointing year, and are understood to be in the frame to sign up to three or four mature players from rival clubs, with one club reportedly on the verge of an exodus of a number of players.

is finding the right coach to lead the club into the future, with an announcement expected within the next few weeks.

Pearcedale champion Chris Dew is on his way back to Frankston after a successful stint with the Panthers, in what is a major signing for the Heat.

The Heat - who have also signed up former Upper Beaconsfield star Bathiya Perera as batting coach - are looking to add more experience to their list, with the acquisition of Dew, who played almost a decade of cricket with the club to much success, a sign of the direction the club is heading.

The region’s other local Premier side, Dandenong, will also be looking to bolster its bowling stocks, with the reigning premiers tipped to lose a couple of key depth players.

It is understood the Panthers may lose an up and coming bowler to a DDCA Turf 1 club and another to a rival association, while Darren Pattinson is tipped to retire after a long and illustrious career.

However, there are reports they are in the frame to land a spearhead fast bowler from a rival Premier club.

In the DDCA, Springvale South has welcomed back Berwick all-rounder Jarrod Armitage to Alex Nelson Reserve, while Narre South captain/coach Scott Phillips has re-signed after premiers Mordialloc tried to lure him across.
