By Cam Lucadou-Wells Jack Ottens is a brilliant boy who can't get a schooling.

Despite a life-threatening affliction, the Berwick 11-year-old is part of MENSA and has an insatiable curiosity for the stars, maths, insects and the natural world.

He has even submitted to the CSIRO to name an unnamed fly. He named it after his family - antisella ottensorum.

He wants to learn and be a part of school.

For the past six years, he and his determined mother Christine have been fighting for it.

Jack lives an arterioveinous malformation (AVM). When it ruptures, it can lead to a potentially fatal deep brain bleed.

In 2016, the AVM twice ruptured. The first time his life was saved when rushed to hospital for emergency brain surgery, Ms Ottens said.

He remains at risk of a catastrophic brain bleed.

The family is exploring a potential lifeline of a refined radiation treatment, possibly interstate or in the US. "The way Jack copes with it is amazing," Ms Ottens said.

"I don't allow him to be a victim. We want him to have as normal life as possible."

However, Jack is often too ill to go to Berwick Chase Primary School - in between his weekly medical appointments.

In the meantime, he is left to learn largely by his own devices at home. He gets tuition for just one hour a week through the state-provided Visiting Teacher Service.

The family has unsuccessfully applied for more intensive assistance such as a teacher's aide under the Program for Students with Disabilities.

Confoundingly, the criteria covers a "significant health impairment" but only those that require "regular paramedical support".

The department has found Jack's illness is not significant enough.

"I don't think they want to approve anything for Jack because it opens up the floodgates," Ms Ottens said.

"Instead of spending money on investigations and reviews, they could come up with a plan for him."

Ms Ottens says even one hour of tuition a day would make a difference for the fast-learning student. It will help take his mind off his AVM and to keep up in the classroom.

She has pleaded for intervention from the Department of Education and Training as well as Education Minister James Merlino.

A Department of Education and Training spokeswoman told Star News the department and school staff would continue to work with Jack's family to support his learning goals.

Works will be commencing to demolish the old Civic Centre and Narre Warren library from next week.

Casey’s rates pain

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents face an average $85 hike in rates and waste charges in the Casey Council draft 2018'19 budget.

But mayor Geoff Ablett issued a warning of hard decisions down the track - including the reduction or ceasing of council services - due to rate-capping starting to "bite".

The State Government's rates cap - set at 2.25 per cent in 2018-'19 - would hurt fastgrowing communities like Casey over the next decade, he said.

"This year's budget is ... a window into the future in which the cumulative pinch of rate capping is clear.

"It represents a tipping point where the future will be characterised by the increasingly difficult job of bridging the gap between the infrastructure and services the community expect and what Council can afford to deliver."

With the help of State grants, the council still unveiled a $121.2 million capital works program for the coming financial year.

Projects include a $4 million new pavilion at Jack Thomas Reserve, Narre Warren North, two new community centres at Clyde and Clyde North and a $7 million 'missing link' section of Glasscocks Road, Hampton Park.

The former Narre Warren landfill site will be renamed Bayview Park and developed into a scenic walk inspired by the 1000 Steps in the

Dandenong. The council also funded Stage 2 of Livvi's Place all-abilities playground in Lyndhurst, and a community centre at Autumn Place, Doveton.

Casey also invested $4.5 million into digital technology, innovation and data.

Residents will pay an extra $28 in waste charges on average largely due to China's recycling import restrictions .

In response to the 'crisis', Casey renegotiated its recycling waste contract with SKM Industries.

The impost was partly offset by reduced costs in maintaining the former Stevensons Road landfill as well as for hard waste collection.

Casey joins the war against drugs

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council is hosting a hardline public forum calling for a tougher crackdown on drugs and more State-funded rehab centres in the South East.

Organiser and former Liberal state MP Jan Kronberg is dead against 'harm minimisation' policies such as legalising cannabis and medically supervised drug-injection rooms.

She makes no apologies for not inviting speakers from that side of the debate.

"They've dominated discourse on the subject for 20 years. We're doing this to push back against them.

"It's time for the alternative to be heard."

The29 May forum is being held by the Drug Advisory Council of Australia - which has a stated aim for a "drug-free Australia" and to "eliminate the harm of illicit drug use".

The forum speakers include Dalgarno Institute researcher Shane Varcoe, counsellor and DACA board member Helen Hadley, Australian

Christians political party researcher Eleni Arapoglou and an affected family member 'Tracey'.

Ms Kronberg said more resources were needed to stop the supply and demand chains, such as more regular checking of shipping containers, she said.

Meanwhile, desperate families were paying $12,000-a-month for private rehab due to a shortage in the public system, she said.

Currently, Victoria had long waiting lists for 200 public beds compared to more than 800 in NSW, she said.

"If you leave someone hanging without the means of getting to a rehab centre, who knows what the consequences will be?"

Ms Kronberg said all levels of government had misguidedly committed to harm minimisation policies due to "this notion that we can't really combat it".

"Look at what the costs to society are and say we're going to fight back."

A supportive Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said there was a desperate need for more public-

funded rehab in the South East.

"We have to get away from the stigma of the word 'rehab'. "They have to be part of the community because the issue is part of the community." In the past, Casey Council has passed strong motions opposing any future safe-injecting rooms in the municipality.

Cr Ablett said the council was supporting the forum's educational function, to help families enduring the crisis of addiction.

Councillor Milla Gilic, also in support, said more rehab beds would give "hope" to families.

The forum comes a month after Casey ran an event against the Safe Schools program, which drew criticism for lacking balance.

Cr Wayne Smith - who was against the Safe Schools event - said the word 'forum' suggested a discussion on the pros and cons of an issue.

"If they are hirers of the venue then what they run is their choice.

"I'd prefer that both sides of the issue would be presented if it was truly a City of Casey endorsed event."

Screams for an ambulance

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A court has heard a recording of blood-curdling screams and shattering glass doors in which two teenage sisters were allegedly injured by their mother’s ex-partner at a house in Harkaway.

The accused, a 32-year-old Cranbourne disability pensioner, sat impassively in the dock during the audio playback at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 May. During the alleged attack, a 14-year-old girl suffered a deep five-centimetre gash to her hand from a shard of glass. She was still being treated at Dandenong Hospital a day later, the court heard.

Her 18-year-old sister was cut to the knee by glass. Their five-year-old brother was also inside the house at the time, the court was told.

About 12.30am on 7 May, the man travelled from a pub to arrive on the patio of the expartner’s parent’s home - where she and her three children were staying, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Glenn Horman said.

In the audio recording there’s an exchange of shouting before the man allegedly kicked the bottom wooden frame of the glass sliding door, shattering panes of glass.

There is hysterical screaming as shards allegedly struck the ex-partner’s 14-year-old and 18-year-old daughters.

The man claimed in court that the girl was injured by putting her hand through the broken glass to “swing a knife at me”.

The man has then used a pole to smash further windows, Lead Sen Const Horman said.

Several times in the audio, a female desperately shouts “Get an ambulance“ as screams and sobbing continue.

A female is heard describing someone as a “f***ing idiot”.

Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court the man didn’t go to the Harkaway house to hurt anyone, but to clarify some “loose ends”.

He didn’t expect the glass to break when he kicked the door, she said.

“He stuffed up in a pretty spectacular way.

“He created a terrifying scene for these women and that’s not what he actually planned to do.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he could hear the witnesses’ fear in the recording. The 14-year-old girl’s wound appeared “deep and extensive”, he said.

“The offending is serious. It would have been terrifying for the witnesses to be confronted like that by someone at their home.

“He has to serve a term of imprisonment there’s no two ways about it.”

Mr Vandersteen offered a sentence indication: if pleading guilty, the man would be jailed for three months and serve a 12-month community corrections order.

The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 May for further mention.

There's been a bit of dumping about lately - and I don't mean for the hard rubbish collection.

In fact, hard rubbish has almost become a recycling effort in itself, so quickly do the vultures hit the nature strips.

No, I'm referring more to the clowns who love a bit of a dump in the wee hours, old tyres usually being their weapon of choice.

It is hard to think of a more blatantly selfish and disruptive act.

If you see a pile of tyres by the roadside, you're seeing the actions of someone who has broken the social compact.

Home to redback spiders and other vermin, they're a tip fire waiting to happen. And don't get me started on the plain old ugliness of them that is a blight on our suburbs.

It's time we applied a zero tolerance policy to these creeps who are doing the dirty on the rest of us, So - watch out for them like a hawk, and be ready to get a number plate to the authorities.

The amenity of our public areas is for all of us, and it's not theirs to take, And for the powers that be? Well, the need to speed up the clean-ups and put up cameras as needed, so it becomes abundantly clear to the dumpers that this simply isn't on.

The principle is no different to a broken window or graffiti creating further problems.

Sooner or later, any area will fulfill the prophecy of becoming what it looks like.

In much the same way as we educated our society to shun drink drivers, we have to apply exactly the same policy to these losers.

Because if you dump and drive, you're a bloody idiot.

Federal tax cuts for all

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick mother Julie Cini has made good her pledge to her dying daughters.

Ms Cini has celebrated the listing of a lifesaving "miracle" medicine for Spinal Muscular Atrophy on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from 1 June.

Ahead of the 2018-'19 budget, the Federal Government announced $241 million to make the drug Spinraza affordable to 160 families.

Ms Cini's two babies Montanna and Zarlee succumbed to type-one Spinal Muscular Atrophy many years before the drug was available.

Since then, for the past 14 years, she has lobbied for treatments and support.

"I know my two children ... obviously don't have any benefit from this drug," Ms Cini said at the emotional 6 May announcement at Royal Childrens' Hospital Melbourne.

"But I promised them that when they died that I would fix it for everyone else."

The drug Spinraza which is the only known treatment for the cruel muscle-wasting disease cost patients a prohibitive $367,000 a year.

With the PBS listing, each script will cost patients a maximum of $39.50. Concession patients pay just $6.40.

The PBS listing will be available for SMA patients under 18.

Ms Cini who founded the charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia will now lobby to make the PBS listing available to adults.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the listing would be "life-saving" and "life-changing" for hundreds of young patients and families.

"It delivers hope for so many beautiful young patents and their families."

SMA is an inherited genetic disease that destroys muscles and motor neurons, particularly in the torso.

It slowly deprives children of the means to swallow and breathe. In the case of type-1 SMA patients, few of them reach the age of 2.

The medicine can slow the disease and in some cases, halt its progression.

"If we can get the drug early enough, we can prevent it altogether."

That means with pre-natal testing funded by the Federal Government, there is hope that the disease can be prevented in all new cases.

Ms Cini has founded a Hallam-based sup-

port charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia.

She has personally counselled countless SMA families through their heart-breaking ordeals, but now she can sell hope.

Recently, she travelled to Canberra to successfully lobby the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee to recommend PBS listing for types 1, 2 and 3a.

Initially the committee was only set to recommend listing for type 1.

"There's been blood, sweat and more than enough tears.

"There's now so much excitement in the SMA space."

The 2018-'19 Federal Budget delivers on income tax relief, roads and in-home aged care but gives a "handout" to big business and banks, says Holt MP Anthony Byrne.

The Labor opposition MP said the income tax cuts were welcome "financial relief" for residents in desperate need.

"Working families" were struggling under low wages growth, higher costs of living and cuts to penalty rates, he said.

Mr Byrne noted more of the roads funding should have been directed to the Casey region.

He criticised the $80 billion "tax handout" to big business and banks which "Australians pay for it with cuts". Among the hits was ending the energy supplement for pensioners and increasing the pension age to 70, Mr Bynre said.

He also claimed there were large cuts to schools, TAFEs and hospitals, and a freeze on Medicare rebates for specialists.

Flinders Liberal MP and Health Minister Greg Hunt said the income tax relief of up to $530 rewarded middle and low-income earners, "Nearly 68,000 taxpayers from all around the electorate of Flinders will benefit under our plan to reduce cost pressures on household budgets."

Mr Hunt said.

He said more than 19,000 small businesses in Flinders would benefit from the continuation of the $20,000 instant asset write-off policy.

Mr Hunt said health and hospitals funding rose by 30 per cent, and that needs-based school funding had jumped by 50 per cent per student in the past decade.

Bakers Delight at Casey Central Shopping Centre is calling on the community to 'give breast cancer the finger bun.'

The store, which has been decked out in pink, is raising money for people diagnosed with breast cancer through its annual Pink Buns campaign which runs until May 23 with 100 per cent Pink Bun sales going to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

Store manager Melanie Plunkett called on the community to get behind the campaign.

"Last we raised over $4,000 for the BCNA and this year we are hoping to raise much more," she said.

"This means so much to us and many people in the community as at some stage in our lives breast cancer will touch one of us."

A special Pink Bun carry bag for $5 can also be purchased with 100 per cent of the sale going to BCNA, or people may leave a message of support on a Pink Lady silhouette, or donate their spare change in the tins on the counter.

Far too much sizzle

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Casey Gardens caravan park resident has claimed he's the "victim" after allegedly threatening his girlfriend and other residents at knifepoint at a boozy barbecue with neighbours.

The 45-year-old man - still wearing his dressing-gown - was refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 7 May despite strenuously denying the alleged assaults and threats to kill.

"I'm not a bad person," he repeatedly said.

"I'm a victim in this."

The man had allegedly choked his girlfriend after they had allegedly attended a barbecue with neighbours at the caravan park on 6 May. He told the court that they left the gathering after a neighbour made a sexual advance on his partner. Police alleged he pushed her on a bed, and grabbed and squeezed her around the throat so she couldn't breathe, Acting Sergeant Adrian Walker told the court.

"You better not leave me," the man allegedly

told her. He produced a rope noose and threatened to make her watch him hang himself.

During the struggle, she was cut to her hand with the knife, police alleged.

Two other residents were threatened as he searched for his fleeing partner. The man held a knife to a resident's face threatening him if he called police.

He had been arrested about 3am, found banging on a neighbour's caravan door and looking for his girlfriend by police, Sgt Walker said.

The victims were "petrified" that if the man was released he'd go straight to their caravans and do "something terrible".

The partner had never seen the man so angry in 20 years and believed he was regularly using ice, Sgt Walker said.

In court, the man denied using ice, challenged police to produce the alleged knife, and claimed the rope noose was in fact a clothesline.

He'd done the "right thing" since being released from jail in 2016, he said.

"I'm not a threat to the community. I'm not a threat to anybody.

"If I intended to harm anybody, I would have done it on the night."

He told the court that he didn't have any issues with these "great people". They had enjoyed a "great barbecue" with "great fun".

He accused them of fabricating a common story before police arrived.

The man promised not to have anything to do with the complainants and to "shut myself in my small van", if released.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man's "very bad" criminal history including aggravated burglary and intentionally causing injury.

The prosecution case was not weak, Mr Vandersteen said.

Bail was refused because the risk of reoffending, interfering with witnesses and obstructing justice was too great, he said.

The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 May.

Silencer and swords: Arms 'collector' jailed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren North man has been jailed after a gun silencer, a paintball gun and an assortment of other weapons were discovered during a police raid of his home on 27 July.

Nathan Lowson, 34, who was prohibited from possessing such weapons due to being on a corrections order, faced Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 7 May. Among the items discovered during the raid were two Tasers, capsicum spray, double-edged throwing knives, a knuckleduster, a samurai sword and a stolen motorcycle.

A defence lawyer argued the accused was simply interested in weapons and hunting, with the swords and knives displayed on a wall at the

time of the raid.

"It sounds disturbing. He's someone who needs to mature in his interests," the lawyer said.

"He's someone who thinks it's cool, if I can put it that way." The lawyer argued for Lowson to be given another chance for drug rehabilitation and up to 600 hours of community work on a CCO. The tiler and landscaper had been "taken and ran with" a similar chance that was offered by the County Court. On that occasion, he successfully appealed against a jail term. Instead the terms of his existing CCO were varied.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he could understand a collector's interest in a samurai sword, but there was "no reason" to possess a silencer.

"You were a prohibited person, which you would have well known given you were on a County Court corrections order for similar offending." Lowson had to serve time in jail due to his previous prohibited weapons convictions in 2003, 2015 and 2016 as well as to deter others, Mr Vandersteen said.

He was jailed for six months followed by a 12-month supervised corrections order with drug and mental health treatment.

Lowson also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and while the drug 'ice' was in his system in January 2017.

He was disqualified from driving for nine months.

Chair and eggs flung onto freeway

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Cars travelling on the Monash Freeway were damaged after a plastic chair, bags of flour and eggs were thrown from a footbridge at Narre Warren early on 5 May. Police say the projectiles were flung from the Prospect Hill Road footbridge between Magid Drive and Josephine Avenue about 12.15am.

No cars were directly struck but at least two were damaged after driving over the items on the road.

The area has been a hotspot of trouble, say Prospect Hill Road residents.

One of the residents on the eastern side of the footbridge said she heard music "like a party" on the western side on the night.

"Also some cars came into our court. One did a bloody burnout.

"I was in bed and my bedroom stunk of rubber."

Recently the residents successfully campaigned for the closure of the turnbowl east of the footbridge due to persistent hooning and vandalism.

Casey Council resolved last month to implement a trial closure of the turnbowl at a cost of about $3000.

Three weeks later, residents say they have not yet been formally notified by the decision.

Rocker rolls on for a cure

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's been a rocky return to the bowling green for cancer survivor and Elvis impersonator Peter Hayden.

Just months ago, the Narre Bowls Club player was clinging to life as a large lymphoma bloomed in his throat.

In the past few years, Mr Hayden had endured months of chemo and radiation treatment, an array of medicines and a bout of shingles.

"Then it just came back with a vengeance," he says.

After a few months on a PBS-listed "wonder drug" Venetoclax , the advanced illness went into remission.

The $12,000 course of tablets a day costs him just $6.

The turnaround shocked club president Eric Sydenham who wasn't sure Mr Hayden would last till Easter.

The only downside for Mr Hayden is the end of his regular Elvis routine, a by-product of surgery that removed the malignant lump.

He sold up his PA system, and just listens to The King's songs for the memories.

"I was always out singing, going out and getting jobs.

"I'm just the type of guy who lived life to the fullest."

He will never give up the bowls, he says.

And the former pub chef is back cooking up a storm at the club's kitchen.

"A lot of people here kept coming up to me and saying 'Are you going to be OK?' "I said 'Yep. I'm a fighter' - even though I had all these bandages and looked like death

Last year, the bowls club staged a dress-up social bowls day that raised $1700 to help support him and his partner and carer Jen Sherry.

The success - and Mr Hayden's recovery spurred the club to make it an annual event Bowl Over Cancer.

All proceeds will go to Cancer Council Victoria for treatment and support.

Bowl Over Cancer is on Sunday, 20 May from 10.30am at Narre Warren Bowls Club, 1 Magid Drive. Morning tea at 9.30am, check-in by 10am. $15 entry.

Krystel’s mum Karen has always been her pillar of strength, her confidant and her greatest fan.

So when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Krystel said it was a moment when the ‘tables turned’ and she needed to be there for her mum.

“For a lady who was the strongest woman I’ve ever met, seeing her on the lounge after her first chemotherapy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face,” Krystel said.

“She was so physically unwell that it broke down not only her strong motherly presence but her entire character. I was upset for her, for my sisters and for my stepfather who had absolutely no idea how to make it better.”

Diagnosed at just 48, Karen had no family history of breast cancer and her diagnosis was a shock for the entire family.

Today, following treatment, she is well and enjoying life with her children and grandchildren.

“We know the treatments mum received and benefitted from are thanks to breast cancer clinical trials research,” Krystel said.

“Mum and I also know there are many other women, other mums perhaps, who need our help because better treatment options for their type of breast cancer have not yet been discovered.”

Donations earned the hard way

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Students at Berwick College put their endurance to the test for an all-school planking challenge on 3 May. It was a contest until the last student was able to keep their torso off the mat, and all for the school's fundraising extravaganza Dunlop Week.

As part of the week, two students Chandler Taylor and Mae Ovenden Lloyd shaved their heads.

Others were sponsored to pound as many sit ups or push ups as possible within 30 seconds. One raised $93 in half-a-minute of strenuous work.

Ashleigh Manning, the school's Dunlop student learning leader, said last year's fundraising record was expected to be broken.

"Dunlop Week has been a great opportunity for the teachers and students to come together to build team spirit as well as raise awareness and funds for a great cause in the broader community."

The funds go to two veterans' charities the Dunlop Medical Foundation and Mates4Mates.

Clive dishes up the deals

By Narelle Coulter Narre Warren entrepreneur Clive Canal was holidaying in Tasmania when the inspiration for his foodie business, Whozcookn, struck.

Staying in the rural town of Stanley two years ago, it wasn’t long before Clive had exhausted all the town’s eating options.

“Within a few days we’d gone through everything. I did some research and knew that within that region there was amazing produce but we just couldn’t tap into it,“ Clive said.

“People like myself who were travelling through had no network. I thought ’I’d love to taste some of this stuff but can’t’.“ Clive’s solution was an app that would let users know all the restaurants, cafes and takeaway businesses within a few kilometres offering what he describes as “multi-cultural, authentic food“.

He named the app Whozcookn, giving it a deliberate Aussie flavour.

“There are other apps out there but none of them are Aussie,“ he explained. “This is the only home grown one.“ As well as the app, which will be released later this year, Whozcookn has grown to include an active Facebook “community“ and cooking workshops.

The workshops specialise in traditional, ethnic dishes led by talented Melbourne cooks. 2017 Masterchef contestant Pia Gava led an Italian themed workshop in Berwick earlier this year.

Clive’s love of food comes from his own multi-cultural background. His mother is Colombian and father Mauritian. His parents met in London and emigrated to Australia in 1987 arriving on Clive’s 7th birthday.

He praises his mum as a great cook and when he wants a home-cooked meal it is her kitchen he visits.

Clive Canal, the brains behind Whozcookn, at Lucy's Divine Cakes in Hampton Park. 179131 “As a child I remember her cooking Mauritian noodles which are beautiful and South American dishes, such as Bandeja Paisa, were also staple favourites within our family.“ An industrial designer by trade, Clive gave up his job in the motor industry to focus on Whozcookn.

He has been working with a tech team for more than two years to design and refine the app.

“I had a look at what was available in the market in terms of apps and found there were others like Menulog and Uber Eats but what I found was that some of these apps had a scatter gun approach to making food available.

“Whozcookn has the reverse approach.

It’s more niche. It’s all about dishes and cuisines and recipes that have been passed down through generations and refined over the years.“ Clive signed up for the New Enterprise In-

centive Scheme (NEIS) funded by the Federal Government, which gave him the skills to develop a business plan.

He also threw himself into every networking and business event offered by the City of Casey, sometimes attending three or four events a week.

The development phase has also involved a lot of eating as he tests cafes and restaurants who want to sign up.

“It’s a tough job but lots of fun,“ he said, grinning.

"I took it as a blessing that I live in Melbourne. It is the perfect hub to create something like this because there are so many different influences and nationalities.

“People are willing to try new things and step outside their comfort zones.“ Connection is a word that comes up often in conversation with Clive.

He loves the cooking workshop concept for

its power to bring people together and is delighted that the Facebook page has become a forum for home cooks to share recipes, food snaps and experiences.

“Whozcookn is not just a business, it’s a community,“ he said.

“Now there is a place you can go and connect with the brand itself. You can have that tangible experience, you can immerse yourself in this whole cooking workshop concept.“ Clive runs his twin businesses from the Waterman Centre in Narre Warren.

“I love it, it’s amazing. You get support, make connections, it’s a wonderful environment.“ To help finance Whozcookn, Clive started a second business, Symbiotic Design Company, which produces 3D virtual models and animations for the manufacturing industry, helping them to promote their business and products.

He encourages other young entrepreneurs to take a risk and follow their dream.

“If you have an idea and you have a dream, then definitely pursue your dream, follow your heart. But it’s equally important to be practical and logical. Do your research, study the market, look at the trends and see if your idea or concept fits in the current market.“ Within a year Clive hopes Whozcookn “covers most of the popular states in Australia“. “ I hope the community will be strong and healthy and for it (the brand) to be part of people’s lives.

“To be honest, and it might sound corny, I don’t want it to be just a business. I want it to be a movement.“

Innovation is the key in this crowded marketplace

By Narelle Coulter The economic potential of startups is set to be harnessed in the Casey Cardinia Region with a new initiative called the INNovation Crowd.

A committee of educators, business people and representatives of both councils under the lead of the City of Casey has been working on the project for nearly a year and hope to launch the initiative in July.

Digital strategist and mentor Judy Pridmore is one of the committee members.

The committee also includes representatives from Federation Uni and Casey Technical School and local businesses like Successful Endeavours and Gaia Skin Naturals.

Much of what can be achieved under the INNovation Crowd umbrella depends on funding from Launch Vic. Whether the region has been successful in its funding application will be known in the next few weeks.

preneur in residence at co-working spaces like the The Waterman Centre in Narre Warren.

Federation University Senior Lecturer Dr Tim Harrison said the university was proud to be involved in the INNOvation Crowd.

Keenan's meteoric rise

By Russell Bennett Cranbourne North teen sensation Keenan O'Hanlon is small in stature, but he has the heart of a lion and the kind of sheer athletic talent that most people could only dream of.

And Keenan has an insatiable desire to continue to better himself, which is taking him ahead in leaps and bounds in the athletics world.

Due to his performances throughout the 2017/18 Australian domestic season, and his astonishing history of medals in the long jump and triple jump, Keenan was recently selected in the 2018 Athletics Victoria Target Talent Program's (AVTTP) horizontal jumps squad.

The Target Talent Program is the early talent identification program into Athletics Australia's high performance pathway, and has been designed to support elite junior athletes, their coaches and supporters make the transition to national senior representation.

In the past three years in a row, Keenan has won both the Little Athletics Victoria long jump and triple jump state titles in the under 13s, under 14s, and under 15s.

His triple jump personal best is now 13.39 metres, while in long jump it's 6.56 metres.

What makes this all the more staggering is that at 5'5", or 165 centimetres, Keenan estimates he's the shortest in his Year 10 class by about five inches.

The 15-year-old goes to Alkira Secondary College, where he's received invaluable support throughout his athletic endeavours.

Mark Jouvelet from Cranbourne Little Athletics has also been an invaluable source of support in his time coaching Keenan.

His current coach, Chloe Edwards from the Frankston Athletic Club, has also picked up where he left off.

Keenan O'Hanlon is an athletics star on the rise. 180675 Keenan admits that he sometimes wonders what he could achieve if he was that little bit taller, but he's still got plenty of time for his body to continue to mature.

In the meantime, his astonishing performances speak for themselves.

His list of athletics medals - many of which

are gold - from over the years is simply too long to mention.

Next, he wants to continue to try his hand at high jump - which he enjoys "just for fun", despite the face he can already leap well above his height. He's also dipping his toe in the water of sprinting, where he made a state

But arguably Keenan's strongest trait is his ability to find his best effort from deep within, right when he needs it most. More than anything, that's what ensures he's a star on the rise.

Bailey's basketball brilliance continues to shine through

By Hayley Wildes Bailey Jankovic could've decided it was all too hard. He could've given up.

Instead, he adapted and found a new way to compete, and excel, at the sport he loves.

Fifteen-year-old Berwick local, Bailey was born eight weeks premature and lives with cerebral palsy. Up until last year, he was playing basketball in able-bodied competitions, but since transitioning to wheelchair basketball, he has truly found his calling.

"I played able-bodied basketball for about five seasons and as I got to around Under-16s, they were getting too fast and strong for me."

Bailey said.

"I thought I'd give wheelchair basketball a go, to see if I could actually keep up and become the person I wanted to be, but in wheelchair basketball."

Just nine months after taking up wheelchair basketball, Bailey is making a name for himself and last month represented Victoria in the Kevin Coombs Cup - the national championship for wheelchair basketball in Australia.

After a tough selection process, Bailey was named in the Victorian squad.

"I was so pumped." Bailey said of finding out he made the squad. "I got an email and it was the best feeling in the world."

The tournament took place in Geelong at the Australian Junior Championships. Bailey and his Victorian teammates took home the Gold medal, defeating Western Australia, 6860, in the Grand Final.

Despite trailing at half time, Bailey said the team never lost faith.

"Even though we were down [at half time], we just felt like we had the momentum going into the second half and especially when it reached the third quarter." He said.

"When we tied it up in the third, the roar of the crowd was just amazing - it went straight through me. Then when we scored again to hit the front, it was even louder."

The highlight of the tournament for Bailey was an easy choice.

"Receiving my gold medal at the closing ceremony - it was so amazing." Bailey said.

"I just want to thank the community so much because I would've had an older, heavier chair and I wouldn't have been able to develop so quickly."

Bailey also wanted to thank all his mentors, coaches, teammates and supporters that have helped him along the way.

"They know who they are - I have heaps of mentors and I just want to thank them all."

A new chapter for Casey

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers have announced, as of late last week, that Big V basketball Division 1 Women's Head Coach Michael Davies has stepped down, due to personal reasons.

In a statement, Casey Basketball said Davies will still be involved with the club at a junior level.

"The Association is grateful for the time Michael has given over the years, and the many achievements he and his team have accomplished in his tenure as coach; including the clubs first ever championship in 2016." Casey said in the statement.

Alex Palazzolo, who has over 30 years of basketball experience including WNBL and SEABL head coaching roles, has taken over the position.

"Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help the Lady-Cavs, as they make their championship run for 2018."

In weekend action, the Cavs had five matchups and came away with three wins.

The State Championship Men went 1-1, claiming a win over Corio Bay on Saturday night, but were unable to contain Eltham on Sunday.

Against Corio Bay, the Cavs had three players score at least 20 points and claimed the win, 101-89.

Raheem Lemons (20 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals) was dominant as his incredible form continued. Meanwhile, Brandon Polk and Matt Donlan (21 points each) provided plenty of offence. Donlan drained 4/5 from beyond the arc.

With little time to rest, the Cavs took on Eltham the next day and just couldn't quite keep up as the Wildcats drained 15 triples.

Lemons (25 points, 10 rebounds) did all he could to try to get Casey over the line, but it wasn't enough as Eltham claimed a 100-90 win. Brandon Polk added 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Ben Louis (8 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists) was everywhere.

Donlan also drained another three triples and has been lights out from deep. Over his past four outings, he has hit 16/24 (67%) from three-point land!

The Division 1 Women made light work of Latrobe City Energy on Saturday night.

An impressive first half saw the Lady Cavs skip out to a big lead at the main break and they were never truly troubled by the Energy.

A monster effort from Jamie-Lee Jeffs (27 points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks) set the tone, while Tanarly Hood ensured the offence flowed with 15 points and 7 assists - she also added 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Stephanie Pal recorded a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds in the 100-70 win.

The Youth League 1 Men couldn't get it done against Corio Bay on Saturday night.

Jordan Gooiker (17 points, 11 rebounds), Brendon Head (16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists) and Luke Beard (15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) led the Cavs, but it wasn't enough as Corio Bay ran out 82-73 winners.

The Youth League 2 Women took care of business against the Southern Peninsula Sharks, 77-60 - handing the Sharks their first loss of the season.

Lauren Tuplin was prominent, as she has been all season, posting 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Stephanie Leclerc (16 points, 5 rebounds) was an important factor in the game with plenty of energy as the Lady Cavs took over down the stretch.

Round 8 will see Casey's annual Pink Round take over Casey Stadium on Saturday. Casey will be wearing pink uniforms and raising funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

With the Youth League 1 Men tipping off at 4pm, followed by Division 1 Women and State Championship Men, it is an evening of basketball not to be missed.

Sunday will see the Division 1 Women and Youth League 1 Men head to Werribee and Camberwell respectively. The Youth League 2 Women travel to Werribee on Saturday night.

Twenty-year-old Berwick local, Sergei Evglevski's maiden Commonwealth Games was extra memorable for many reasons.

On top of competing at a home Commonwealth Games and with his Mum, Lalita Yauhleuskaya also representing the green and gold, Evglevski claimed a silver medal in dramatic fashion.

The men's 25 metre rapid fire pistol shooting event went right down to the wire.

Evglevski made it through to the final after qualifying with the third highest score through two qualification stages.

His score of 28 in the final set a new Commonwealth Games record, but unfortunately his rival, Anish Bhanwala also set a new record with an unbelievable score of 30.

"Obviously he shot really well and it was a bit of a struggle trying to keep up with him, but I was happy with how I shot and I just had to push through it." Evglevski said of the final.

The experience of representing Australia on home soil was an incredible one and Evglevski talked about the support from the fans.

"It was amazing and it was definitely a lot more supportive." He said. "You could sense that the fans were there to actually come and see you, instead of supporting other countries." "[The opening ceremony] was insane.

Hearing all the cheers, hearing all the fans out there cheering you on and walking out with so many athletes was pretty crazy."

In another fantastic chapter of the family's shooting story, Sergei, after sharing moments on the podium with his Mum Lalita in his younger years, was able to have his own podium moment on the Gold Coast.

"I used to follow her to the podium at all the shooting competitions when I was there." Evglevski said. "Having her coach me when I was really young and for her to be coaching and training with me now is what has pushed me through a lot as well."

Narre’s day of domination

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 4 (SPLIT ROUND) After what can only be described as an exhilarating opening 30 minutes down at Starling Road on Saturday, there was no inkling in the slightest of the complete and utter domination of Narre Warren thereafter.

The build-up was expected, both sides came in undefeated as one of the two sides who have improved remarkably in the opening three rounds. It had been since all the way back in 2010 that the Kangaroos had last bested the Magpies, and that long awaited win took 31 years to eventuate.

So, at quarter time, with the Kangaroos leading by a single point after both sides shared 10 goals between them, the game was set-up for an epic.

In the opening minute the tone was set for a potential shootout, with Aaron Wilson getting on the end of two influential touches by star Magpie Brad Scalzo, and from there, both sides looked ominous when entering their attacking fifty.

Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners summed it up perfectly after an exciting opening quarter.

"We don't always go there and play well, but the first quarter we started off well and we came in and were two points down which isn't ideal," he said.

But after some strong messages and home truths at quarter time, Shinners got his side firing, completely blowing the Kangaroos away in an epic second quarter that featured eight goals and an eventual 42-point lead.

The Magpies had completely broken the game apart through dare and vigor with their ball movement, and combined with silver service for their forwards, it was a recipe for disaster for Doug Koop's side.

Some spectators marveled in the Magpies' transition of the football, with one commenting on the "clinical" and "unique" nature of the side this season.

One of the more impressive bits of ball movement came in that quarter too - Josh Tonna took a superb intercept mark in the centre, before quickly playing on and spearing a ball towards half-forward, opening up the forward line for an eventual goal from point blank range by extremely impressive youngster Tom Miller.

The Magpies slammed on a further 16 goals in the second half, pushing the margin out to a whopping 130-points, in a statement of epic proportions, 29.18(192) to 9.8(62).

They ran in waves, and had over a dozen goalkickers, something Shinners points to as the biggest improver in their flawless start to 2018.

"It was a bit of a tongue lashing for the boys (at quarter time), but we finished the day with 15 goal kickers, we shuffled the side around a bit with players playing in different positions, which gave us a look at alternative measures for the future," the proud coach said.

"To finish the day like we did and to have that contribution from 15 blokes in our side was a pretty good effort - That's our whole thing from the start of the year, to get a good band of players together so we can have a good mix and not relying on one or two players every week, that's the biggest thing."

While it's perhaps hard to pin-point the clear standouts on an extraordinary day for the Magpies, the class of the likes of Scalzo, star midfielder Trent Cody, emerging defender Jesse Davies, as well as champions Michael Collins and Col McNamara proved pivotal.

On a dirty day for the Kangaroos, Tyler Clark, veteran Ben Tivendale as well as skipper Matthew Clarke could hold their heads high.

Officer needs to bounce back next week when they travel to Holm Park to take on Beaconsfield, fresh off a three figure win over Tooradin, while Narre Warren hosts Doveton.

Meanwhhile, Berwick continue to still find their feet and their form, but are doing exactly what is expected of them, chalk up the wins and continue to work towards their best.

But against a plucky Pakenham outfit, which is showing the early hallmarks of being a solid side, they had to work for their third win of the season, 5.10(40) to 15.8(98).

Stewart Kemperman's side showed enough class and experience to run away with a 58-point win at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday, in a six goal to one final term.

But for three quarters, the Lions were up to their noses in a genuine scrap for the points.

Brad Scalzo (right) celebrates after one of his two goals. 180506 After taking a narrow lead of two points into quarter after a wasteful Wickers side struggled to acclimatize itself to a new found forward pressure, the visitors surged out to a 23-point three quarter time lead courtesy of an another commanding performance from Ash Smith, as well as typically industrious efforts from Michael Riseley and Luke Sheppard.

The game finally broken open for Kemperman's men in the final term, with a series of misses finally converting into a major, with an incredible hanger by the dynamic Harry Money resulting in a terrific running goal by defender Will Arthurson.

As expected, the Lions fell away after a terrific effort, with the Wickers then slamming on five more goals to push out the lead to something perhaps not reflective of the contest provided by Ash Green's side.

"There's still a bit to work on for us - the effort was there, but if we're talking about execution across four quarters, the consistency of that, it was an issue," Kemperman said of the game.

"We had a lot of the ball, but didn't use it as well as we should have, particularly going inside 50, so plenty to work on which is good."

However, Kemperman said his side's best form is not too far away ahead of a home clash against Tooradin on Saturday.

"There is elements and patches of it, we're getting closer and we need to tighten things up - we're not too far away I wouldn't have thought," he said.

Berwick will host the Seagulls at Edwin Flack Reserve in Round 5, while Pakenham would fancy its chances against Cranbourne at Casey Fields.

Down at Tooradin, Beaconsfield emphatically knocked off Tooradin by 100-points, with Nathan Langley and Jimmy Munro combining for an incredible 19 goals, 9.11(65) to 26.9(165).

The Seagulls stuck firm after a solid opening quarter, with both sides kicking straight and playing an electric brand of football that resulted in 11.4 kicked between them.

While the Eagles lead by six-points, they needed to keep scoring to stave off and eventually break down the home side's run.

And it was a second quarter to savour Casey Demons jet Jimmy Munro had the ball on a string and was making an impact up forward, while the much maligned Nathan Langley looked as ominous as he has since joining the club. Importantly for the Eagles, Langley was kicking straight, booting goals from set shots and snaps, while also tackling fiercely, and even booting a goal after superbly putting his body on the line and earning himself a free kick. By Hayley Wildes SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 5 Keysborough was far too strong in a big wireto-wire win over Skye, 13.12 (90) to 4.9 (33). Tamas Siposs was best afield and Matthew Carnelley kicked four goals as the Burra remain undefeated.

The Doveton Eagles also showcased their class and remain undefeated after making light work of Caulfield, 22.15 (147) to 7.15 (57).

Peter Dye, Nick Battle and Enayte Samadi booted four goals each.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 3 Hampton Park fought out a tough win over Endeavour Hills, 10.5 (65) to 6.13 (49).

Endeavour Hills had their chances, but were unable to convert many of their attacking forays. Nathan Carver (four goals), Kane Bloxsidge and Ash Scott were best for Hampton Park, while Jarrod Marolla (three goals) and Nick Gay were impressive for Endeavour Hills.

Springvale Districts, meanwhile, defeated Hallam in what was a demolition of epic proportions - 32.27 (219) to 2.3 (15).

A whopping 15 individual goal kickers for Springvale Districts showcased their complete domination as Matthew Thompson and David Monaghan ran riot. In a dirty day for Hallam, Matthew Studd and Sean Gaitely battled valiantly.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 5 The Dandenong Redlegs were simply no match for Cerberus, 16.16 (112) to 5.7 (37).

Anthony Gaetano and Nick Ford battled hard, but Cerberus' team effort was evident as Michael Schwarz and Shannon Schonewille (four goals) led from the front.

Sandown, meanwhile, was ripped apart by the Frankston Dolphins 3.12 (30) to 20.14 (134).

For the Cobras, Taylor Meyer, Joshua Hurford and James Tate stood strong in the loss.

Finally, Lyndale was unable to overcome a slow start as Lyndhurst stormed to a comprehensive win, 11.14 (80) to 7.6 (48). Charlie Gardiner and Hamish Browning (four goals) took over for Lyndhurst.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 5 A whopping 38 scoring shots against is enough to break any side, and for Pearcedale on the weekend, it proved way too much to handle.

The Panthers, now with a 1-4 record, paid for a slow start in their clash with Karingal, going down by 58 points, 12.8 (80) to 20.18 (138).

The home side fell by 31 points in the first quarter and was unable able to recover, with the Bulls slamming on 14 goals to 10 in the remaining three quarters to run out comfortable winners.

In a powerful display down forward, Matt Stanley (seven goals) and Blake Simpson (four goals) proved the difference, while Pearcedale

trio Luke Murray, Laughlin Cowell (three goals) and Zach Campbell battled manfully.

TAC CUP GIRLS - ROUND 8 The Dandenong Stingrays continued their impressive late season form, winning their third game in a row.

Taking on the Calder Cannons, the Stingrays just got over the line in a thriller, winning 3.9 (27) to 4.1 (25). Courtney Jones, Tyanna Smith and Meg Graham were best afield for the Rays.

Chris gives Heat its Dew as the Panthers lose a gun

By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne has added one of the most revered sporting coaches anywhere in the region, with former Victorian batsman Nick Jewell signing on as an assistant coach.

The 40-year-old, a former St Kilda champion and Frankston coach at Premier level, will oversee the development of the club’s brightest young players, in a role that has seen him have major success - particularly at Frankston - over the course of the last decade.

A 62-game veteran for the Victorian Bushrangers, Jewell has been dominating the Mornington Peninsula leagues for the last few years, with successful stints at both Sorrento and Main Ridge.

It is understood that Jewell was initially going to be part of a major coaching coup that included champion batsman Matthew Chasemore signing as the head coach, vacated by Prabath Nissanka, however, after virtually

having the current Berwick star signed on, the 36-year-old declined the Swans’ offer and will likely remain with the Bears where he is currently contracted.

The Swans will be looking aggressively at improving its list after a disappointing year, and are understood to be in the frame to sign up to three or four mature players from rival clubs, with one club reportedly on the verge of an exodus of a number of players.

But the next big task the club is undertaking is finding the right coach to lead the club into the future, with an announcement expected within the next few weeks.

Pearcedale champion Chris Dew is on his way back to Frankston after a successful stint with the Panthers, in what is a major signing for the Heat.

The Heat - who have also signed up former Upper Beaconsfield star Bathiya Perera as batting coach - are looking to add more experi-

ence to their list, with the acquisition of Dew, who played almost a decade of cricket with the club to much success, a sign of the direction the club is heading.

The region’s other local Premier side, Dandenong, will also be looking to bolster its bowling stocks, with the reigning premiers tipped to lose a couple of key depth players.

It is understood the Panthers may lose an up and coming bowler to a DDCA Turf 1 club and another to a rival association, while Darren Pattinson is tipped to retire after a long and illustrious career.

However, there are reports they are in the frame to land a spearhead fast bowler from a rival Premier club.

In the DDCA, Springvale South has welcomed back Berwick all-rounder Jarrod Armitage to Alex Nelson Reserve, while Narre South captain/coach Scott Phillips has re-signed after premiers Mordialloc tried to lure him across.
