Upper Yarra Secondary College at Yarra Junction will receive $6.2million as part of a threeschool project announced in the State Budget.

Education Minister James Merlino visited the school with Labor Candidate for Eildon and UYSC School Council member Sally Brennan, on Wednesday, 2 May, to congratulate the school community on what will be the first stage of a major upgrade after many years of lobbying.

Principal Scott Tully said work on the new building which will encompass specialist science and general purpose class rooms designed to increase connection to the outdoor environment, is expected to start early in 2019.

The overall $20 million investment which also provides $5.8 million for Lilydale High School and $8 million for Lilydale Heights College aims to address an enrolment imbalance between the three schools by upgrading particular facilities at each of the schools.

Lilydale High will get a new Zoology Learning Centre and admin facilities while Lilydale Heights will get a new Sustainable Learning Hub, gym and a 'town centre' where students can meet.

Together, the projects are set to develop complementary focuses of zoology, sustainability and outdoor environment.

For UYSC's 530 students, and teachers, the new buildings are a first step towards providing a 21st century workplace.

"This is about our connection to the outdoors and the environment that we have here and the aim is that it will facilitate a curriculum that takes advantage of our environment," Mr Tully said.

Ms Brennan welcomed the investment saying she went on to school council with the express intention of getting the resources needed to rebuild the school.

"This is stage one, the start of the process,' she said.

"In all the years I have worked with schoolage young people, 22 years of those in Upper Yarra, this school has needed a lot more support than it has been getting, so my intention

On Saturday, 28 April, Rotary members blitzed the 4.2kilometre stretch of highway from Stringybark Creek to Quayle Road collecting four cubic metres of rubbish as part of the Keep Australia Beautiful/VicRoads 'Adopt a Roadside' initiative.

The program aims to reduce litter on Victoria's roadsides to stop pollutants from entering local waterways, improves the quality of vegetation, and prevents soil degradation and erosion.

Wandin Rotary takes to the highway twice a year seeking out rubbish along the way including bottles, cans, tyres, old car parts, fibro cement, metal and other discarded items.

Gavan McIntyre, chair of Wandin Rotary's Community Committee said the roadside warriors received lots of positive comments along the way.

"These projects are very important to show the community that the club cares about our local area," he said.

"We did the community a great service whilst having fun and fellowship along the way and would like to give a special thanks to Mara at Mr Ks for providing all of us with a free coffee after we finished."

Scan May is a life-saver

Over the past decade a number of men and women living the eastern suburbs have had life-saving procedures following early detection by using a Bowelscan test kit.

For Healesville Rotarian Dr Ian Tinney, the early detection program provided by Bowelscan is a valuable tool that potentially saves lives.

People have just one month to take advantage of the annual bowel cancer public awareness and early detection program run by the Rotary clubs of Healesville, Wandin and Upper Yarra.

By Kath Gannaway McKenzies and Martyrs bus services are among a number of locally owned bus companies fighting to retain their assets, and potentially ownership of their companies, under a proposal put by the State Government as part of negotiations of public bus route contracts.

The Bus Association Victoria (BAV) and local operators have accused the State Government of "acquisition by stealth", claiming all three options offered to them as their contracts come up for renewal involve selling off their assets including buses, staff and intellectual property.

Chris Lowe, Executive Director of the BAV, said the government has told nine small to medium family business bus owners out of the 13 that operate in Melbourne that new five, seven or 10 year contracts on offer are contingent upon the companies agreeing to transfer assets on a varying scale.

Brad Sanders, General Manager of McKenzies Bus Services, has been representing McKenzies, Martyrs and Panorama Coaches that operate out of Diamond Creek, in the negotiations.

"Depending on the contract period the government wants access to new buses and staff and to intellectual property - that is the knowhow of how we run our businesses," he said.

Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, has rejected the claims saying the changes are about putting passengers first and providing buses where people want to go.

She said the government had successfully negotiated with two thirds of the industry and

would continue to negotiate with other providers to ensure they get a fair deal.

She denied there is a compulsory acquisition of assets saying operators can choose 10 year contracts that include the government purchasing at market value strategic assets, buses and depots, or they can choose five or seven year options where they keep their existing assets.

She said the purchase of assets was so contracts could be put to market at the end of the 10 year contracts and the assets could be used by future operators.

BAV Executive Director, Dr Chris Lowe, said while that explanation was partly true, it was also partly irrelevant with the five and seven year options enabling operators to keep the depots and buses they own at the commencement of the contracts but with staff subject to offers from the government or its nominee at the end of the contracts.

"The operators will procure their own buses during the contract with their own money but will be contractually obliged to transfer them to the government at the end of the contracts.

"For smaller operators these replacement buses could be a quarter, third of half of their fleet, meaning good-bye business,' he said.

Mr Sanders told the Mail the government wants contract signed by 29 June.

"If we sign the contract, we have to sell," he said.

"In 10 years' time I would like to think that we can keep going, and not be taken over."

In answer to Ms Allan's statement that passengers deserve a better service, Mr Sanders

said the government holds the reins in terms of where public services run.

"We can do it better if they give us the ability to do it," he said.

Dr Lowe concurred saying operators are contracted to do what the government directs them to do.

"What the government needs to do is change the bus routes so they are more responsive to the community needs.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish said she is outraged at the proposal saying local bus companies had invested heavily in their businesses.

"When you look at the bus lines we have here and what they have put into making them successful businesses, and establish good will.

"They are not investing so the government can take over and sell them off," she said.

Labor candidate for Eildon, Sally Brennan, said Eildon communities relied heavily on buses for public transport.

"It is vital that our bus services meet the emerging and changing needs of travellers and commuters," she said.

Ms Brennan said she was pleased that the government was looking at modernising contracts with bus operators to sort out the declining bus use in the city but said it was important, with services in the Yarra Valley regarded as metropolitan, that the unique transport needs are recognised.

"I will work with the government and bus operators to ensure that the public transport needs are met, and that the values and services that underpin our locally owned and managed bus services are maintained," she said.

A spate of fatalities in the Yarra Valley has Yarra Ranges Police pleading for drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

With winter approaching and wet weather on the weekend a number of accidents and fatalities have already occurred this month around the Yarra Ranges.

The incidents are particularly poignant with Road Trauma Support Services Victoria's Shine a Light on Road Safety Day held on 4 May. On 1 May, a male motorcyclist died following a crash involving a truck at Toolangi.

The crash occurred on the HealesvilleKinglake Road just after midday when the south-bound motorcyclist collided with a tipper truck and trailer travelling in the opposite direction.

The rider, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and will prepare a report for the coroner.

On 5 May a female driver and passenger were travelling north on the Melba Highway when the vehicle they were travelling in , a 2006 Silver Holden Rodeo left the roadway and crashed into a steep embankment sometime before around 2:30am.

The crash occurred between Dixon's Creek and Castella.

The yet to be identified female passenger died at the scene and the female driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone with information or who may have seen the car earlier are urged to contact Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol on 9739 2300 Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant, David McIlfatrick, said it was sad to see so many fatalities already in May and encouraged drivers to take care on country and rural roads and to drive to the conditions.

By Derek Schlennstedt Wandin Recreation Reserve will share in the biggest investment in women's and community sport in Victoria's history.

Wandin Recreation Reserve will receive $1 million to build a new multi-purpose sporting and community pavilion, which will cater for the growing numbers of locals signing up to play the sports they love.

The pavilion will provide a massive boost for local clubs including Wandin Football Netball Club, Wandin Junior Football Club and Wandin Cricket Club.

The funding will be provided through a $60 million Community Sports Fund announced by the Labor Government as part of a $241.7 million boost for community sport in the Victorian Budget 2018/19.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino said that places like "Wandin Recreation Reserve are the cornerstone of local communities."

"We're upgrading local grounds, change rooms and pavilions right across Victoria - so everyone has the facilities they need to play and watch the sport they love," he said.

Anger over school 'snub'

"Yarra Ranges SDS ... has been contacting the Minister for Education on a regular basis pleading for substantial capital works funding to address the appalling state of our school buidings," the letter read.

"We were promised a paltry $500,000 in mid-2017, which has been used for the development of a master plan, as well as a new build of an administration building. This was the only thing we could build, given our funding limitations.

Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School's parents and school council have been left feeling dejected and angered after again missing out on state funds.

The Victorian Government unveiled its State Budget on Monday 30 April, with many schools around the Yarra Ranges securing funding windfalls.

Special schools around the state, too, have fared relatively well, with the Andrews Government announcing multi-million promises to numerous large facilities, including the Niddrie Campus of the Western Autistic School, the Wangaratta District Specialist School and the Traralgon Education Regeneration Project.

However, the Mount Evelyn-based school has missed out, despite comprising almost entirely of portable classrooms.

Parent and School Council Vice President, Emily Withers, said the students deserve better.

"The school buildings were meant to be temporary structures back when they were built in the 1970s, yet it's still here, as other schools are awarded funds for upgrades," she said.

"The only bricks and mortar building we have is the Early Years Centre, which acts as the facade of the school.

"I'm angry and something needs to be done. It's not about the politics; it's about what's good for the children ... and this isn't good enough."

Ms Withers has three children who attend the school; Tyler, 11, Hayden, 8, and Sarah, 6.

All children have an undiagnosed genetic disorder and are non-verbal.

"My daughter has 12 years to go at the school and we'd like to see some positive change," she said.

"They attend a mainstream school one day per week, and there is a big difference between the schools, in terms of facilities and even atmosphere."

In response to pleas, Monbulk MP and Minister for Education, James Merlino said the Labor Government hadn't ignored the school.

"We invested $500,000 in the 2017-18 Victorian Budget for Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School to upgrade and modernise its facilities," Mr Merlino said.

"The proposed works include building new general purpose classrooms, administration and learning spaces and a cafe, as well as removing two portables.

"In mid-2017, we appointed Hede Architects to work with the school on numerous design stages, including developing the floor plans, elevations and sections."

Mr Merlino said the Victorian School Building Authority and the school are determining the finer details such as materials and finishes, the landscape plan and engineering, electrical and structural elements.

"It is anticipated that construction will commence in mid-2018, with works being complete by mid-2019," he said.

"We are delivering an unprecedented 70 new school projects across Victoria through an investment of more than $3.8 billion as part of the Education State.

"This includes the biggest investment in Yarra Ranges schools in the area's history."

Mr Merlino said the Government will continue to work with the school on their infrastructure needs and will consider future funding as part of the usual budget processes.

Greens representative and member for the Eastern Metropolitan Region, Samantha Dunn, spoke to the 'Mail' about her party's call for full cannabis legalisation in Australia. The former Yarra Ranges Shire councillor had the following to say: Will you be supporting the Greens' call for full cannabis legislation in Australia?

Yes. What are some of the main reasons in the thinking behind this policy?

Cannabis prohibition has failed. Interaction with criminal dealers (rather than trained professionals in safe, regulated outlets) is putting people at risk. This means the cannabis products they purchase are of unknown strength and quality.

The Greens' plan provides for education about the potential risks associated with chronic cannabis consumption; and those selling cannabis would be required to undertake responsible service training, as well as mental health first aid course.

The money raised through tax revenue, and saved in law enforcement response, would be invested in drug treatment services, mental health services and drug education programs.

Has this policy specifically drawn from other models around the world?

We are playing catch-up with other countries around the world that have moved to legalise cannabis, but this means that we have the opportunity to learn from them.

Can this policy be successfully adapted in Australia?

Australia is a unique country and for this reason our plan includes a fully independent review after two years of implementation.

We can, however, look forward to similar outcomes to other countries. For example, early data from Uruguay shows that drug-related crime has dropped 20 per cent since cannabis

became legal in July 2017.

If implemented, what changes could this mean for the nation and the Yarra Ranges?

Legalising cannabis will create a commercial market for its production and sale. This will create jobs and, in turn, boost the economy.

Yarra Ranges can look forward to a portion of the revenue raised through taxation of cannabis being redirected to drug treatment, health education and harm reduction.

Do you think this change will gain much support in Australia?

Here, in Australia, support for legalising cannabis is strong and growing. In January 2017, a poll of over 1000 Australians by Essential Media found that 55% of respondents thought cannabis should be taxed and regulated like alcohol or tobacco, and only 26% opposed.

Are you concerned that, if implemented, this will result in a higher use of cannabis in Australia?

The consumption of illicit cannabis in Australia is rising. Thirty-five per cent of Australians have used cannabis. This means that millions of Australians are forced to buy cannabis of unknown quality of strength from criminal drug dealers. Protecting young people from cannabis use is a key objective of the legalisation; we would have strict prohibition on sale to minors and penalties for breach of that. Criminal drug dealers have no such barriers.

Any final thoughts on the policy?

It's time for us to acknowledge that cannabis prohibition has failed. The war on drugs has done nothing to stop, or even reduce, the use of cannabis. Legalising the production and sale of cannabis removes drug dealers from the equation. Our approach is focused on reducing harm and keeping people safe.

Funds are currently being directed to ineffective law enforcement responses, when they could be spent on drug education and health services.

In response to John Whiteoak's letter "Me too', frustrated angry' (Mail, 17 April).

The fencing of the river frontage is not suitable for the Little Yarra River.

It may be the solution for other areas in the Yarra Valley but it isn't for our area. One size does not fit all regardless of intensive community conference. "Clear thinking" locals who have the greatest knowledge and respect for this particular unique area have not been included nor heeded in this so-called community consultation.

To label the people who oppose this is equally bordering on fear mongering, Professor. To assume that Clare Haywood is poorly disguising her political bias via an LNP agenda is quite a stretch. There are Left and Right wingers out here who are still able to make a decision based on facts and the realities that we live with.

To fence the Little Yarra River (to be maintained by the property owners adjacent) is not feasible. If you lived here you would have the knowledge that deer are out of control. Yes, cattle use the river but it is deer that cause the greater erosion. To keep deer from advancing onto the bank it would take an eight foot fence as they leap whereas cows do not.

When this fence is erected along the Little Yarra River how do wallabies, wombats etc get to the water? What potentially happens when renters or property owners don't maintain the adjacent river area? What happens when bureaucrats don't care about the answers to these questions? That they wish to plant trees along this river yet don't want to hear what the locals who have lived and farmed here for generations advise when it comes to species?

I commend you Professor for what you have achieved on your property. Believe it or not but I'm a conservationist, I love animals, I abhor the notion that the human race could assume that we have a right to make a species extinct.

Living in the country means we can't always be saviours to wildlife but we can try our best. One size does not fit all.

When rest doesn’t cut it Healthy

Paediatric Naturopath – Healesville In this month's column, I'd like to discuss fatigue-based illness with you; its prevalence is on the increase and perhaps you or someone you know have been feeling wiped out and

have not been able to improve using rest?

How do you know you have fatigue and are not just tired?

The fatigue patterns from chronic illness come with symptoms that can include 'heavy' limbs, 'foggy head', pain, insomnia and headaches.

A person may struggle just to do the shopping, mow the lawn or bring in a load of washing before feeling exhausted and spent.

This type of fatigue doesn't improve with sleep and rest because the body's physical and energetic pathways are compromised.

One of the reasons people struggle to improve with these conditions is because the

root causes and core issues have not been addressed.

Only by doing this can there be space for improvement and restoration.

Treating fatigue-based illness with Naturopathic Medicine can bring great benefit.

Here is a common scenario we use in our clinic which has yielded excellent results for a great number of people.

Work up: Functional and Lab Testing to establish baselines of nutrient status, pH, Gut microbial balance and infection. This gives us a clear direction of how to move an individual in the direction of cure, prioritise treatment and adjust diet appropriately;

Salvation Army reaching out

Training for Mother's Day

As May approaches final preparations for The Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal are coming together. Every year across Australia people gather to collect donations from their local community to help The Salvation Army support those in need who are struggling with a wide range of issues such as domestic violence, financial hardship, homelessness, loneliness, and mental illness. Here at The Salvation Army Mooroolbark our Emergency Relief team is working hard to offer support to families doing it tough. The services offered here include, food assistance, case management (ongoing guidance with finances), Positive Lifestyle Program (The PLP methodology takes participants through a self-awareness-raising process, focusing on personal difficulties they may be unable to identify or address.), and financial counselling. Over the past 12 months 881 people have been assisted through our centre.

It is because of the generosity of local communities supporting The Red Shield Appeal, that we are able to continue this work. Government funding only makes up approximately 30% of all assistance given. To everybody who donates to the Red Shield Appeal thank you.

Each year we look for people willing to help collect by donating two hours of their time during 14 May to 2 June. If you would like to know more please call our office on 9727 4777.

Other the past few months The Salvation Army Corps of Mooroolbark and Healesville have merged extending our reach into the Yarra Ranges to help support people in need. At

Healesville we have a Youth Transitional Worker at the high school who also runs our youth drop in centre held on Friday nights. There is a great need to offer our young people a place to turn not only when they are in strife but also a safe place to come together.

The closure of our Care and Wear shop has left some people wondering where we have gone. We are still working hard in town, and plan to open a new much larger store very soon in the main street of Healesville.

The Salvation Army is committed to serving our community and we look forward to the days ahead. As we journey with families and see the success of people getting back on top and reliving life.

Call for Anzac sport pause

By Kath Gannaway A local resident is calling for football and netball games to be stopped during the Yarra Junction Anzac Day commemorations when they are played at the nearby oval on Anzac Day. Rob Tressider said although the netball games between Warburton and Healesville were stopped during the 11am service, whistling and cheering from the Under 18 game could be heard by the crowd gathered at the cenotaph.

"This is something that is very important to the kids and to everyone gathered there and it should be paid due respect" he said.

"Any money taken on the day should go to the RSL," he said.

The Anzac Day round between Warburton or Healesville, was played at Yarra Junction this year because of works being carried out on the Warburton ground.

AFL Yarra Ranges General Manager, Aaron Bailey, said there was clear direction on what can and can't be done on Anzac Day including being able to play, but not taking money before 1pm.

"As a league we believe we have a role to play on Anzac Day and around the promotion of Anzac Day," Mr Bailey said.

"We will continue to work with our clubs and local RSLs to ensure that any games on those days are respectful to any events happening."

Warburton Football Netball Club president Rod Barnard told the Mail the club had organised the day's events with a representative of Warburton RSL and agreed to stop the netball because the courts are close to the cenotaph area.

"We decided to continue with the Under 18s because we weren't playing right next to that area, and if we did stall the game, we were going to be playing the seniors game in the dark," Mr Barnard said.

Mr Barnard said the club was very conscious of the reverence of the day.

"We probably show more respect towards Anzac Day than any other club in the country," he said.

Give a little nappy love

By Kath Gannaway One of the delightful things about babies is that they seem to grow overnight!

One of the unexpected consequences of these growth spurts is that the nappies you bought in bulk because that's the most economical way to buy them, no longer fit.

With two littlies going through the nappy stage, Woori Yallock mum Sharon Falconer found herself with a batch of perfectly good, unused nappies so she started looking around for a productive way to pass them on.

"I figured if I have ended up with all these unused nappies there are probably plenty of other parents and families out there who have the same thing happening in their homes.

"I found The Nappy Collective, so instead of throwing them away, they can be passed on to mums in crisis," she said.

The Nappy Collective launched its 11th nappy drive on 4 May. The two-week campaign calls on parents and families, to donate unused, disposable nappies, providing tangible support to women and babies in crisis.

Sharon said the idea really struck a chord with her so she decided to share it and offer other parents a local opportunity to be part of a very practical campaign that will make a huge difference in the lives of vulnerable parents and their babies.

of more than 311,104 babies born in Australia each year, equating to between 600,000 and 900,000 nappy-wearing babies and toddlers.

Clearly, they say, the potential for positive impact is huge when families in crisis are often faced with the choice between nappies and other necessities such as food or healthcare needs for themselves.

The provision of nappies, a basic necessity, removes a financial and logistical barrier and can improve the mental wellbeing for women and parents in crisis.

The majority of nappies are distributed to women who have fled to the safety of a shelter after a family violence incident, taking little or nothing with them.

Now in its fifth year, and with over two million nappies in the nappy bag, The Nappy Collective's first CEO, Lani Masuku is determined to reach a target of three million nappies collected by 2019.

Sharon says families in the Yarra Valley can certainly make a contribution to achieving that goal.

To make the collection more accessible, Sharon is placing the nappy collection bin at their business - Kayson Floors, Shop 4, 1609 Warburton Highway, Woori Yallock.

Nappies can be dropped in between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday up until Friday, 18 May.

For 17 year old Jessica Myers-Denton, receiving her Duke of Edinburgh Award at Government House on 6 April was the culmination of four years of dedication to the project.

That she received it from a fellow Duke of Edinburgh Award recipient, and that it was Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, was the icing on the cake!

It was amazing ... a big thing for me that it was presented by Prince Edward," Jessica said.

"He spoke of his experience of the award and congratulated us, saying what a big achievement it was.

"When he spoke of how he almost gave up during some of the camps and projects, it really related to our own experience of the Award."

That experience started for Jessica at Upper Yarra Secondary College (UYSC) when Jessica was in Year 8.

The school has a very strong Duke of Edinburgh Award history and hearing from others in the program prompted Jessica to give it a go.

As part of the program which took almost four years to complete, Jessica went to Cambodia in 2016 with the UYSC as part of a humanitarian trip that required her to raise

$4000 to take part.

She also went to Western Australia earlier this year for a month volunteering at a dolphin centre looking at how tourism is affecting dolphins.

Jessica did the bronze, silver and gold components of the award back to back, finishing the final year on her own after transferring to Mount Lilydale Mercy College in Year 10.

She said taking part in the program had given her a sense of self.

"I discovered who I was, what I was about, what I love to do," she said.

"I was more reserved when I started and a bit worried about doing it, but I have had to be out of my comfort zone a lot and doing things I would not normally do so I have gained a lot more confidence and ability to interact with different people.

Would she recommend it to other students?

"Definitely."

"There are so many different things you can do. If you want to learn a new skill you can take a class or do it yourself, so it depends on the different way you approach the Award.

"You just get so much out of it, so definitely I would say it's worth it."

Most of our club are also present at the Millgrove Dawn Service, and all the proceeds of the day go to the RSL." The annual Ecotopia Recycled Fashion Parade has weathered the storm (literally!) with a wellattended and entertaining event at ECOSS in Wesburn on Sunday, 29 April.

The parade fell prey to an ill-wind last month when the Ecotopia festival was cancelled due to a battering which left many of the festival marquees in tatters.

Connecting youth and art Connecting youth with the art world is a passion of established artist and gallery owner Reggie Clark.

And, May is a special time at Art at Linden Gate as the works of up and coming artists line the gallery walls for the annual YouthArt exhibition.

Unique art produced by creative, young, local artists will go on show at the Yarra Glen gallery as part of YouthArt18 from 11 to 28 May. Now in its fifth year, the program has gone from strength to strength with a fresh batch of artists and some familiar faces showing their talents and skills.

Director of Art at Linden Gate, Ms Clark said the gallery had been exhibiting artists from all stages of their careers for almost 30 years.

"We strongly believe that the next generation of local artists needs to be supported and encouraged to pursue their artistic endeavours," Ms Clark said.

"We contact local schools and art groups and ask them to encourage their best artists to apply.

"We partner with local businesses, RACV and Yering Station, who provide prizes and Yarra Valley Arts supports the program too."

Ms Clark said the artists ranged from 15 to 25 years (with a 13-year-old included last year) and the quality continued to improve each year.

"This program is important as it encourages young people to practice their art outside of school and connects them with the art world," Ms Clark said.

"Participation in the program includes mentoring and support. They are given the opportunity to get involved in bringing the exhibition to life by contributing to the planning, advertising, set up and running of the exhibition.

"This experience, in their community, will be valuable to them when they apply for university or other exhibitions."

Mia Pensa, 15, experimented with gouache and watercolours to create her piece 'Idealism' which is about the ideal facial composition and entered it in this year's YouthArt exhibition.

Emily Grundy produced portraits using oil

on glass or perspex, which won her the RACV People's Choice in YouthArt17 last year. The talented 20 year old will be exhibiting other portraits this year.

YouthArt18 is supported by Yarra Ranges Council through Council's Small Grants program which offers support for community groups responding to opportunities and chal-

lenges in their communities through a range of categories.

Cosy up for a cancer cure

Teen genius at The Memo

Long before microwave ovens keeping your cup of tea nice and hot was a far more creative endeavour.

Tea cosies did the job, and inspired creative solutions like the hundreds of cosies that light a fire each year under the members of Craft A Cure who have used the humble - and not at all humble - tea cosy to raise thousands of dollars for the Cancer Council of Victoria.

Over the past four years the group has raised $32,000 through their Tea Cosy exhibitions and competition, gaining the prestigious No 1 spot on the CCV's "I Will For Cancer" as an individual fundraiser.

An exhibition of 100 tea cosies at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead in Wandin from 2 to 31 May is a teaser for the group's main exhibition and competition to be held at nearby Warratina Lavender Farm in July, and a welcome accompaniment to their Biggest Morning Tea to be held on Thursday, 24 May. Bloods tame favourites

By Cameron Hutchison Round 3 was played in damp conditions and as a result some surprise results were the order of the day with some good football and netball witnessed by club's supporters and the Yarra Valley Community.

The winners in senior football: Belgrave, Healesville, Monbulk, Upwey Tecoma, Woori Yallock, Gembrook Cockatoo, a draw between Powelltown & Alexandra, Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen.

A Grade netball winners: Olinda Ferny Creek, Belgrave, Monbulk Hawks, Woori Yallock, Upwey Tecoma, Kinglake, Yea, Powelltown and Seville.

Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 7.16.58 d Olinda Ferny Creek 6.9.45 Healesville have got their second win for the season after surprising the early flag favourites. Healesville had 9 scoring shots to 1 in the first quarter but needed to finish better and as a result of being a bit wasteful in front of goal there lead at qtr time was just 23 points. Olinda clawed their way back in the second, holding Healesville goalless and kicked 2.2 to reduce the margin to 10 points at half-time. Healesville lifted in the third and kicked 2 goals to 1 to have a handy lead of 16 points at three-quarter time. Healesville threw everything at the goals in the last but could only kick 1 goal as they wasted opportunities again kicking 7 behinds.

At the end of the day it was still enough at the final siren.

Warburton got off to a great start kicking 7 goals to 4 and went into quartertr time with a 15-point lead. Belgrave found something in the second and outscored Warburton, kicking 3.4 to 1.4 to be only 3 points down at half-time. The third quarter was very quiet from both sides and they both struggled to make any impact on the scoreboard. Neither side could kick a major and the margin was reduced to 2 points in Warburton's favour. Belgrave switched it on in the last and outplayed Warburton kicking 5.4 to 2.4 to come away with a hard earned 4 points.

Monbulk really turned it around in the second, keeping Emerald to just 4 behinds while they kicked 6.1 to be in front at the main break by 12 points. Emerald had more scoring shots than Monbulk in the third, but could not convert and were still behind by 15 points at the last change. The last quarter was tight and neither side could get any momentum going their way. Monbulk had done enough to hang onto the lead and come away with a muchneeded win.

Mt Evelyn looked like they had this game under control in the first as Upwey could not fire a shot and only kicked 3 behinds to 5.4. Mt Evelyn stopped in the second and did not kick a goal while Upwey kicked 4.4 to be only 5 points behind at the main break. Mt Evelyn came out in the third and was just run over by the Tiger Train with Upwey having 9 scoring shots to 1 and took control of the game and led by 19 points at three-quarter time.

The second quarter was a bit of a non-event with only 1 goal being kicked by Wandin reducing the margin to 11 points at half-time. Woori Yallock extended their lead to 16 points at three-quarter time and it looked like they were home, but Wandin had different ideas in the last kicking 5.3 to 3.1 to nearly snatch victory from the Tigers. Yet again indirect kicking cost a win!

Gembrook travelled up the mountain and were well-prepared for this game. They came out and kicked 6.2 to 4.1 to take a handy lead of 13 points into the second. They piled on another 6 goals in the third to Kinglake's 2 to be 37 points up at half-time. Kinglake tried in the third but Gembrook had all the answers peppering the goals with 9 scoring shots to 6 to be 54 points up at three-quarter time and in full control. Gembrook was a bit wayward in

the last but really had the game all sewn up; Kinglake kicked 4 straight but it was all too late.

They kicked 4.3 to 3.4 in the third to extend that lead to just six points at three-quarter time. It was a tough last quarter and both sides would be disappointed with their conversion rate in front of goal. Alexandra won the quarter but was unable to swing the game their way in the end.

Seville jumped out of the gates with a first quarter that should have seen more goals, but they kicked 3.7 to 1.2 and took the lead at qtr time by 17 points. They bombarded the goals in the second with 9 scoring shots to Yarra Glen's 2 and increased their lead to 34 points. The first half of footy was not pretty from either side and if Seville had capitalised in front of goal this game would have been all over bar the shouting. One goal to half time to Yarra Glen is not impressive but 14 behinds from Seville and most of them from set shots is not good footy either. Yarra Glen turned up the tempo in the third, kicking 5 goals straight to Seville's 3.2 and the game was still in Seville's favour by 24 points. The last quarter was exciting for both team's spectators but, in the end, it was Yarra Glen that stormed home, booting 7.4 to 2.2 to come home with a win by 8 points.

By Dean Thompson This Saturday 12 May, Alexandra Speedway will be holding the Victorian Crash and Bash title for the second season in succession and all the weird and wonderful cars and competitors will be on hand for a whole lot of crashing, bashing fun including the defending top three from last season's title event Jake Young, Rob Bushell and Andrew Corlett.

Those three unique individuals and their machines will be trying to defend or better as in the case for Rob and Andrew their results from last season.

However, they will have their feet firmly planted to the floor and the rosary beads swinging from a hook somewhere hoping they can out-run the challengers looking to spin them, crash them or send them flying over and over as they also, try to win the 'Big One'.

In the entry list, fans will also see the 'Mad Midget' Dale Morrison, Rod Disher a winner this season, Brad Warren a lost Sprintcar driver, Nathan Taylor a gun since returning back on track this season, the McKendry Boys, Tim Cole the fastest Crash and Bash driver ever around Alexandra Speedway, Jason Judd who is hard to stop at tearing stuff into pieces and a host of other competitive racers who all want to be mentioned, they will put their names up in lights on Saturday trying to impress the crowd who pay their hard earned dollars.

There are 44 entries in the title and they will be supported by all the club classes also running their machines through the dog leg short circuit.

looking to make a name for themselves in the Chilly 15. Watch for Peter Cox as he also knows how to get around the short circuit quickly.

Also competing will be Junior Sedans and Standard Saloons amongst one hundred and twelve competitors that will be in action this Saturday.

Racing starts from 2pm and with all things going to plan, will be finished between 9pm and 10.30pm with around 35 in the programme to complete.

Prices are $20 for an adult entry and $10 for children aged 10 to 16 and aged and invalid pensioners. Children under 10 years of age enter for free.

Oval torn up Wandin Football Oval has been the subject of vandalism recently, after two cars were believed to have driven through a gate onto the oval and torn up the surface.

Yarra Ranges Council's Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said council has been notified of the damage.

"This is disappointing, as our sporting grounds are frequently used by the community and sporting clubs," he said.

"Our sportsfield team inspected the grounds on Friday morning, conducting interim repairs on the gates and oval to ensure games could continue over the weekend.

"Replacing the gate and reparing the grounds will cost about $2000."

And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero.

With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing.

Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology.

The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times.

There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers.

Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear!

Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before.

A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day.

They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not?

Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion.

But that's not the only cool bit.

To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required.
