‘Armstrong-size’ growth plan

A statement out of City Hall this week announced that the “Northern and Western Geelong Growth Areas” would be of “similar scale” to Armstrong Creek, earmarked for a population the size of Ballarat.

The new chair of Geelong’s libraries has declined to detail how he will streamline the organisation he described as a “monolith” of bureaucracy in 2017.

Councillor Ron Nelson called for an inquiry into the Geelong Regional Library Corporation last June following its controversial recommendation to close Chilwell, Highton and Barwon Heads libraries.

“There’s a bit of fat at the top there that perhaps we don’t need,” he said at the time.

But Cr Nelson declined to detail possible cost-cutting measures despite his recent talks with the corporation’s chief, Patti Manolis.

“I'll certainly make it run as streamlined as much as I can,” he said.

“I haven’t had much of an opportunity to go through all of the books but certainly I’ve gone through the operating costs of the corporation itself.”

The corporation had structured its costs prior to his appointment, which could prevent him imposing cost-cutting measures for the financial year, Cr Nelson said. Such measures would likely be confidential in nature, he added.

Cr Nelson said his appointment last week as chair negated the need for an inquiry.

“Now that I’m on the board I can see what needs to be done . The buck stops with me.“ The appointment comes after Cr Nelson in 2017 joined thousands of Geelong residents protesting a proposed closure of the three libraries.

The campaign eventually forced Geelong’s stateappointed administrators to reverse their decision.

“I’m passionate about libraries, which is why I put up my hand,” Cr Nelson said.

“My job is take make sure all the libraries stay open.”

Cr Nelson said State Government funding for the corporation was decreasing, a trend he wanted to reverese.

“I’ll look to make sure there are new ways of raising revenue and maintaining an efficient and effective service.”

According to the GRLC’s 2016/2017 annual report, the corporation paid $8,421,733 to 97 full-time-equivalent employees at an average of 86,036.

Ambos faster ahead of ‘flu’ Geelong paramedics have reduced their average emergency response time by a vital minute and 12 seconds, Ambulance Victoria has announced.

Barwon South West director Simon Thomson last week announced the 10 per cent reduction in code one callouts, which require paramedics to use lights and sirens.

“Even with an increase in patients, response performance improved,” he said.

“We attended an additional 279 code one patients in the Greater Geelong local government area this January, February and March than for the same period a year earlier," Mr Thomson said.

“Paramedics reached code one patients in Geelong in the first three months of 2018 in an average of 11 minutes and one second.

The response time was a 10 per cent improvement on the 12 minute and 13 second average during the same period last year.

“We attended 85.4 per cent of code one patients in greater Geelong within 15 minutes, an improvement of 6.1 per cent on the same period a year earlier,” Mr Thomson said.

Ambulance Victoria was well-prepared for the upcoming flu season with more paramedics and ambulances than ever before, chief executive officer Tony Walker said.

“While last year’s heavy flu season had a significant impact on the health of Victorians, we were able to not only meet demand but improve our response performance,” Associate Professor Walker said.

“We have continued that improvement in the recent summer months and are now well placed to enter the next winter peak with more ambulances and paramedics on the road than ever before.”

Tourist access pain Inadequate access to even basics like toilets could be costing Geelong a fifth of its potential tourism trade, according to a state MP. The city’s accessibility shortcomings were possibly keeping away many disabled and elderly tourists as well as prospective visitors with young children, said Member for Geelong Christine Couzens.

She convened a forum in Geelong this week to discuss the issue, saying she wanted the city accessible for “all abilities”.

“From what I hear, Geelong is not very accessible in many ways, even on basic things like toilet access or access into buildings and safe and secure places,” Ms Couzens said.

“There are some great opportunities for Geelong to take the lead to become an amazing accessible city and to the lead the way, not just for residents for tourists as well.”

Ms Couzens believed that Geelong was probably losing a large amount of tourism business for want of access amenities that could cost nothing.

“Available evidence” indicated that incorporating accessibility elements into urban design from the initial stages of planning bore additional costs of one per cent or less, she said.

But cities depending on tourism were likely to pay “high opportunity costs” if they filed to cater for prospective visitors with access issues.

“It is estimated that, in economic terms, that by not adapting its inaccessible infrastructure the tourism industry would fail to capture approximately 15 to 20 per cent of the global market share,” Ms Couzens said.

She contrasted Geelong’s apparent accessibility issues with its development as a social

insurance hub.

“Geelong has a great opportunity to create an accessible city that meets the needs of everyone in our community. In Geelong we now have Worksafe’s head office, the TAC and the NDIS, which has created an insurance hub, adding to the importance of accessibility for all abilities.”

Ms Couzens’ concerns about the impact of accessibility issues for visitors followed a report in the Indy last month that tourism was on the verge of becoming a $1 billion industry for greater Geelong.

Tourism spending reached $902 million last year as 5.1 million tourists flocked to Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, said local industry boss Roger Grant.

The growth meant tourism now employed 5315 workers locally, up 19 per cent in a year, he said.

“I want to be in the grand final,” the 12-yearold from central Geelong said.

Jalal’s mum Ameera was thrilled he could “be like all the other kids who enjoy team sports” in the five-a-side competition.

“He’s a very sociable child so this just gives him that opportunity to interact with other people,” she said.

“I’m not sure he understands what the competition means but he’ll get in there

“All the other kids will be of similar abilities so they’ll be on par.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for them to be involved in their community, do things they like and feel like they’re getting a go.“ Jalal played mainstream soccer but having Down syndrome limited his strength and stamina, and he fell behind as he grew older.

“All the kids and coaches are really good but he couldn’t keep up,” Ameera said.

“We decided to pull him out of that so he didn’t have a bad experience or get injured.”

Ameera hoped for an all-abilities tournament

for younger kids so they could “develop these skills a lot earlier.”

The league received an “avalanche” of support, genU Karingal St Laurence organiser Glen Snowden said.

“We only expected to get a couple of clubs interested, but we ended up having eight clubs say ‘yes, we want to support that’, so that was a great result.”

The eight teams will play a 10-week season kicking off in May, following a registration day at Drysdale last week.

“It’s already opening up new networks, friendships and relationships for everyone,“ Glen said.

A renamed annual exhibition of disabled artists’ works will open at Geelong’s Gordon Gallery next week, its organiser has announced.

The 2018 art X, formerly KarnivART, would feature works from more than 80 “experienced and emerging artists” from 9 to 16 May, local welfare agency genU said.

North, west growth ‘size of Armstrong’ From page 1 The growth areas would be centred on the Batesford and Lovely Banks areas, already home to significant residential developments.

Council would unveil draft urban structure plans for both growth areas this Friday, the statement said.

The unveiling would also incorporate the first public release of council’s draft “Greater Geelong Settlement Strategy”, City Hall said.

“The settlement strategy is a framework to ensure the City can meet the region’s housing needs to 2036,” the statement said.

“It directs where growth and development should occur and guides sustainable urban development.”

Councillors would consider reports on both strategies at their meeting next week, City Hall said.

The new growth areas would build on previous residential development plans reported in the Indy for tens of thousands more residents in estates stretching from Lara to Batesford.

Planners expect around 60,000 residents to eventually fill the Armstrong Creek area as nearby Torquay surges toward a population of 20,000.

The plans for more growth areas follow a warning that Geelong should consider slowing its housing boom until infrastructure catches up.

Planning export and Melbourne University Associate Professor Carolyn Whitzman told the Indy in 2013 that Geelong risked the dramatic work-life imbalances of neighbours such as Werribee and Point Cook.

GROWTH: Mayor Bruce Harwood says good managment is the key to successful residential growth.

She recommended growth limits as Melbourne’s urban sprawl moved ever closer.

“Geelong is effectively now part of metropolitan Melbourne, not that this is a great thing,” Dr Whitzman said.

In response during his mayoral term on Geelong’s previous council, Bruce Harwood rejected Dr Whitzman’s recommendation to cap growth.

Management of growth was the key, he said.

“You can’t stymie growth. You have to manage it and ensure proper infrastructure occurs

in the growth period not afterward.

“Council has said very clearly for some time that proper public transport and an increase in capacity are essential to growth in the region.

“You can’t put a moratorium on growth.

It’s about managing growth and ensuring infrastructure in place during growth, not afterward like Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing and Truganina.”

In 2013 council expected Geelong’s population to grow 50 per cent by 2031, from 215,000 to 302,000.

Anyway, the museum says arts patrons will be guided through Holowko’s odd installation with “light-filled cocoons and electro beats”.

Family, friends and more than just a few fans have farewelled legendary Cat Russell ‘Hooker’ Renfrey, who passed away aged 94 last Saturday.

Mourners gathered for his funeral in Highton on Thursday, remembering a bloke with a deservedly fine reputation both on the footy field and off.

After joining the Cats in 1946 following his first experiences of Aussie Rules during World War II, Hooker went on to play 201 games for Geelong as a ruck-rover in a team replete with champions.

As well as a dual premiership star, he still holds the record as the only VFL or AFL player to feature in 26 straight wins, accumulated during the Cats’ dominant 1952 and ’53 seasons.

Fellow Geelong legend Bob Davis once described Renfrey as the club’s “lifeblood”, a “father figure and undoubtedly the most-popular bloke at the club”. Too true, according to other old-timers.

After footy Hooker took his hard-work ethos into business, developing a successful trucking firm whose vehicles emblazoned with the family name became a common sight on local roads.

Truly an achiever off the field and on, Renfrey was also known for his good humour and generosity, still helping out with the club’s past players group well into old age.

NBN’s halfway milestone

By Luke Voogt More than half of Greater Geelong can now connect to the NBN, the government corporation responsible for delivering the network announced yesterday.

About 57,000 of 112,000 premises could connect to the fixed line network, NBN Co’s Victorian head Ebony Aitken said.

The NBN Co switched on seven towers for its wireless service in February and March, bringing the Geelong rollout out to halfway, Ms Aitkin said.

Another 55,000 Geelong premises will be able to connect to the fixed line network by mid-2019, she said.

Property owners have 18 months to connect or they will lose their landline phone as NBN Co decommissions the existing copper network.

According to national estimates about three quarters of people chose to connect to the NBN, Ms Aitkin said.

“We are finding that Greater Geelong is consistent with this profile.“ Based on the estimates roughly 43,000 premises in Geelong will likely choose to connect by the end of the 18 month period.

“The most popular time to switch over to (the NBN is) the first six months after a premise can officially connect,” Ms Aitkin said.

“We get another surge of activations towards the end of the 18-month migration window as residents and businesses (connect) before their existing services are de-activated.”

The NBN Co has completed the rollout in Belmont, Portarlington and Ocean Grove.

The corporation has also connected 6,900 premises in Lara, Leopold, Moolap and other parts of Geelong.

NBN Co switched on access in Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Lara and Moolap between late 2016 and early 2018.

“This means that disconnection of the existing copper network began in parts of these areas in February and will continue progres-

sively until the end of the year,” Ms Aitkin said.

The NBN Co has begun construction to allow 23,000 premises in both Lara and Moolap to connect to the wireless network by mid2019.

The further 30,000 premises in the rest of Geelong will be able to connect between late 2018 and early 2019, Ms Aitkin said.

NBN Co expected to switch on the remaining five Geelong towers for its wireless network by early 2020.

About 2,800 premises can connect through the wireless network, while another 1,700 will be able to connect once the rollout is complete.

Chorus plans ‘surprise’ with rehearsal for national titles

By Luke Voogt Geelong Harmony singers will give locals a sneak peek at their musical repertoire as they prepare to take on Australia’s best choirs.

The chorus would fill Western Heights Uniting Church with “nuanced harmonies” next Monday, promised singer Helen Booth.

“We’ve got a few little performance surprises and reveals coming too,” she said.

The show is the last for the 36-women chorus and three accompanying quartets before they head to Hobart for the Sweet Adelines Australia later this month.

The chorus was buzzing with excitement especially its five newest members, Booth said.

Geelong Harmony sings everything from KD Lang and the Eurythmics to Etta James’ classic At Last - with one common feature.

“All the songs we sing are arranged in barbershop style,” Booth explained.

State budget ‘rail failure’

By Luke Voogt The 2018-19 State Budget has failed to deliver “much-needed” road and rail duplications according to municipal alliance G21.

The Andrews Government’s lack of funding for rail duplication between Geelong and Waurn Ponds stations surprised and disappointed G21 chief Elaine Carbines.

“The budget also failed to provide specific solutions to the overcrowding, unreliability and excessively-long commute times of Melbourne-Geelong train services,” the former Labor MP said.

Ms Carbines welcomed $50 million to investigate Victorian rail upgrades, including a fast train from Geelong to Melbourne.

“However, at best, any resulting fast train will be seven or more years away,” she said.

“Commuters are packed in like sardines now. They can’t wait for seven years.”

The budget failed to fund an emergency hub at Armstrong Creek and the duplication of the Barwon Heads Road.

“A community of this size needs appropriate fast-response emergency services, as a recent tragic fire in the area starkly demonstrated,” Ms Carbines said.

The duplication was essential for the road to cope with increasingly heavy traffic to Geelong’s fastest growing suburb, she added.

Road and rail would become critical issues in the November State Election, she added.

But Ms Carbines welcomed $153.2m for a City Deal, which brought the planned convention centre, improvements to Shipwreck Coast and central Geelong revitalisation works a “giant step closer”.

She urged the Turnbull Government to at least match the funding in next week’s Federal Budget.

The Geelong Chamber of Commerce lauded the State Government for cutting payroll tax by a third for businesses paying at least 85 per cent of wages to regional-based employees.

The government will build a crisis hub at Geelong hospital emergency department as part of $705m in the budget to fight addiction and mental illness across Victoria.

The budget includes $250,000 for a study to make Geelong Australia’s “most inclusive and accessible city”.

It also features $7.9m to clean contaminated land at Geelong Gun Club and $2.8m for the Geelong Project to keep disadvantaged students at school and prevent them from be-

coming homeless.

“This budget will revitalise Geelong’s city centre, support local businesses and create good local jobs,” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said.

But coalition MP Simon Ramsay accused the government of misleading Geelong on the City Deal.

The project was worth $139.2m based on his reading of the budget papers and the government would only spend $10.8m on the deal during 2018-19, the Member for Western Victoria said.

Mr Ramsay described the fast train study as “expensive con” and said the budget denied Geelong vital infrastructure funding.

Waste collection, day care and parking fees are set to increase as Geelong’s council spends $128 million on capital works to accommodate the city’s growth.

The waste service charge will rise to $316.90 in 2018-19, up $38.85 on 2017-18, including a new hard rubbish collection in 2019 at $6.80 per property.

“Residents will be pleased to see the hardrubbish collection that so many have requested will commence on a trial basis,” Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said.

China’s national policy and the ensuing global recycling crisis had caused City Hall to increase the waste charge, he added.

City Hall’s 2018-19 Budget includes a $104.2m capital works program with $17.7m for roads, $8.7m for bike and foot paths and $10.4m for recreational upgrades.

Council will upgrade several local sporting clubs with female and unisex facilities through the program. The program includes another $48m of capital works carried over from 201718, $24m of which City Hall forecast would carry over into 2019-20.

Council will borrow $42m in 2018-19, including $27.1m in deferred loans from 2016-17 and $14.9m new borrowings. City Hall will repay $9.7m in loans in 2018-19, meaning a total projected debt of $80.6m for June 2019 On-street parking will increase to $2.90 per hour, while the cost of reclaiming a pet at the pound will decrease by $20.

Residential rates will rise by 2.25 per cent to an average of $1570.

PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF INTENTION TO EXCHANGE LAND SECTION 189 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 1989 Greater Geelong City Council (Council) gives notice under section 189 of the Local Government Act 1989 (“Act”) that it intends to exchange its land with other land described below (proposal).

Rob Leonard felt ambushed when he entered a conference room alone to fight a proposed intensive goat farm next to his Lara property.

Arrayed against him was a team of lawyers and an executive, representing Geelong’s council and Nuchev, the company behind the now-controversial 4500-goat proposal.

“Oh, I was ambushed all right,” he said.

“There were barristers and solicitors left, right and centre.”

Mr Leonard was the sole objector to the proposal at a compulsory conference at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in February last year.

He spoke to the Indy after Geelong-based MP Simon Ramsay in March called in parliament for an investigation into “alleged threatening and intimidating actions by Nuchev legal counsel”.

“This objector, Mr Rob Leonard, felt threatened by (the) alleged actions,” the Member for Western Victoria told parliament.

Nuchev’s legal counsel allegedly implied that Geelong's council could take “action against (Mr Leonard) for not having permits for some of the structures on his land,” Mr Ramsay said.

Mr Leonard admitted to the Indy he was unprepared and regretted not bringing a lawyer, which VCAT’s website recommends against for “most“ compulsory conferences.

“I didn’t realise you could actually have representation,” he said.

“I can’t even ask the council because council aren’t there for me. My own council were against me!”

Mr Leonard said the opposing side dissected his concerns, making minor amendments to the proposal.

“You can’t ask them, can you,” he said.

“They’re going to do everything they can to tell me, 'You’re doing the wrong thing'.”

Mr Leonard said he felt overwhelmed and alone when advised in the conference that he would lose an appeal “on just emotion”, so he signed his withdrawal.

“I thought, 'Well, that’s it. I can’t win, I’m

wasting my f*****g time'.

“They’re saying they’ve answered all my questions. What do I f*****g do now?”

Geelong’s state-appointed council administrators’ granted the farm's planning permit in 2016 despite 56 objections.

Several objectors planned to join Mr Leonard but withdrew after their leader suffered health problems, according to Neil Longmore, a lawyer for the No Nuchev Campaign.

“Rob was a person who didn’t have any understanding of planning at all,” Mr Longmore said.

“He was representing the interests of the whole Lara community and he obviously didn’t feel empowered to do that.

“He had no one to support him and he would have felt very alone and at a disadvantage given the calibre of the people on the other side.”

Since the conference the No Nuchev Campaign has collected more than 4500 signatures against the farm and protesters have filled City Hall at several council meetings, successfully convincing council to appeal against the permit.

Council officers recommend against appealing to VCAT, citing Mr Leonard’s compulsory conference.

But council voted in March for councillor and Lara resident Kylie Grzybek’s alternative motion to go ahead with an appeal.

Nuchev’s legal representative at the compulsory conference, Michelle Blackburn, declined to comment on Mr Leonard's claims despite multiple requests through both VCAT and her previous law firm, Corrs Chambers.

Ms Blackburn, now a VCAT member, was aware of the Indy’s attempts to contact her, a tribunal spokesperson said.

“It would be inappropriate for member Blackburn to comment given her current role as a VCAT member,” the spokesperson said.

Council’s legal representative at the hearing, Greg Tobin, also declined to comment, directing the Indy to contact City Hall.

Council planning director Joanne Van Slageren said City Hall was “not at liberty to discuss the matter further.“ Friday, 4 May, 2018

Locals, ‘taxpayers’ cover solar project

By Luke Voogt Local investors have raised more than $150,000 in a week to install 500 solar panels at an aged care home, according to Geelong Sustainability.

Geelong Sustainability’s Dan Cowdell said 20 locals contributed about $7500 each to the “exciting” clean-energy project, which received an additional $140,000 State Government grant last October.

“We weren’t expecting the level of response we got from the community so quickly.”

Mr Cowdell described the communityowned business model of the CORE Geelong One project as a Victoria-first.

“It appeals to ethical investors where they’re supporting a local community investment but also making a return on their investment,” he said. “We want to make solar benefit the local community.”

The $150,000 investment will pay for a local company to install a 156kW system of Chinese-made solar panels at Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS) in North Geelong.

The provider will lease the system for ten years from the investors, paying back the $150,000, plus interest, before buying it for one dollar.

Mr Cowdell declined to specify the rate but said it “was better than bank interest”. He expected the installation to begin mid May and for the system to be operational at the end of June.

Mr Cowdell said the project would reduce carbon emissions by 210 tonnes per year,

Burglar flees home owner An aggravated burglary suspect has fled a Belmont home empty handed after the owner “disturbed” him, according to police.

The man allegedly entered the Victoria Terrace residence at 5.5am on 18 April after stealing from a separate property in the same street, police posted on social media.

“The offender was disturbed by the home owner and fled out of house without stealing any items.”

Investigators alleged the suspect stole a motor vehicle in the earlier theft and burglary. Police posted security camera images of the alleged burglar, suggesting they came from convenience stores where the man made purchases with a credit card.

The man appeared to be wearing grey tracksuit pants, a zip-up hoodie of a similar colour but with black arm sleeves, and thongs.

He was dark-haired with a light beard and moustache.

Police urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference numbers 180137179 and 180136980 for the aggravated burglary and vehicle theft respectively.

He said the State Government grant of $140,000 paid for legal costs, due diligence, financial modelling and “project coordination“.

Mr Cowdell declined to say how much of the State Government funding he received as the project’s coordinator. The funding would also support the first year of the project’s operation and enabled Geelong Sustainability examine similar future projects, he said.

“We are looking to replicate this project many times over.“ Last year State Government stated the project would save MACS $29,000 per year in electricity costs.

“We are fighting climate change through meaningful community engagement, protecting our environment for future generations,” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said at the time. Mr Cowdell said recent price rises had increased the savings to $30,000-plus.

The local law for question time and notes supplied at the door are silent on disagreements and complaints, and ratepayer rights.

WALL OF VOICE: About 200 singers rehearsing last week for Wildfire Musical Festival’s massed choirs concert.

Wildfire breaks out More than 200 singers will hail the beginning of the 10th Wildfire Festival of Music on Friday in a “breathtaking” massed-choir “extravaganza”.

Music at the Basilica’s Jane Bashiruddin joined the dozen or so choirs, which rehearsed alongside Orchestra Geelong for the first time last week.

“The sound was an incredible,” she said.

The concert at St Mary of the Angels Basilica marks the opening of the 10-day festival featuring seven concerts, five free organ recitals and workshops.

“There is something for every taste,”

Bashiruddin said.

Newtown and Ocean Grove sopranos Lee Abrahmsen and Sally Wilson will perform alongside the choirs and orchestra on the opening night.

Abrahmsen sang National Anthem for the Ashes test at the MCG on Boxing Day in 2017 and recently performed the lead role in a Melbourne production of Tristan and Isolde.

Order of Australia medallist and long-time musician Malcolm John will conduct the orchestra, while Tom Healy leads the choirs.

The remaining concerts feature some of Geelong’s most musical families in ethnic,

church and community choirs, along with solo musicians.

Several young musicians have cut their teeth in the festival over the decade, including Max Rudd, the brother of Xavier Rudd.

“We’ve had a whole heap of young people who have gone onto further studies or made a bit of a name for themselves,” Bashiruddin said.

The city centre will glow with earth-inspired projections and edgy artwork when Geelong After Dark returns tonight.

The festival, now its fifth year, will light up City Hall, Johnstone Park and the Geelong’s parks and laneways with work by local and international artists.

Featuring in the line-up for this year’s earth-themed festival is the Terra Firma photo projection, by the Indy’s very own Rebecca Hosking.

Ms Hosking was thrilled to project nature “into the city centre” through time-lapse sequences, macro video and drone footage.

“The concept is to step off the asphalt and onto the earth,” she said. “(Terra Firma) is an exploration of our earth, and the importance of its health and the life it hosts.”

The night includes activities at Geelong Library, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the National Wool Museum and the city’s other cultural centres.

The Amazing Art Adventure will take kids on a journey through the city to make a bee, search for a piano and learn about the planet in an “unusual“ location, promoters said.

After journeying from the You Yangs throughout the day, the Mountain to Mouth canoe will pass Johnstone Park to the sound of local choirs singing.

The canoe will travel 80km in two days before reaching its fiery demise at the mouth of the Barwon River.

Councillor Jim Mason described Geelong After Dark as the perfect opportunity to showcase and celebrate the talent of the local arts community.

“Our wonderful arts community makes an enormous contribution to the vibrancy and culture of our region,” he said.

Giant challenge for injury-hit Cats side Geelong’s season hangs precariously at three wins and three losses with a mounting injury toll in the lead up to tonight’s massive clash against Greater Western Sydney.

And while the orange invaders from the west of Sydney will descend on GMHBA Stadium tonight, the Cats will also don orange for a worthy cause.

The club’s annual Just Think round will see players wear orange-banded socks and goal umpires don orange flags to highlight the alcohol education program which has been providing practical advice for young people regarding alcohol use and safe drinking behaviours since 2008.

Geelong endured a shock loss at its Kardinia Park fortress last weekend to an injury depleted Sydney Swans.

In terms of opposition scoring for the Cats, it was all or nothing.

Sydney was a 52-point better side in the first 18 minutes of the first quarter and last term combined, booting 10.7 (67) to 2.3 (15) as the Cats were run off their legs and unable to find answers to the Swans’ scoring potency.

Geelong lost the last 12 centre clearances as Sydney gained an unstoppable momentum in the middle of the ground.

So far this year it has been all or nothing for the Cats from stoppages, with Geelong scoring the most points in the league from stoppages while also conceding the most.

“The most important number besides the

Giants star Brett Deledio’s past three weeks have turned back the clock with the veteran racking up 28, 29 and 28 disposals, but the 31-year-old has suffered a hamstring injury and won’t line up tonight. Star forward Jeremy Cameron has also been ruled out.

The Giants sit third on the ladder while Geelong is in ninth place.

The Cats have a blockbuster next week against Collingwood, but then face very winnable games against Essendon, Carlton, Gold Coast and North Melbourne.

A win tonight could well see Geelong back in the top four when the bye rounds are played.

Tonight’s game is at GMHBA Stadium and starts at 7.50pm.

GWS is capable of winning, but the Cats should get the job done by 14 points.

Usual sites keep firing for anglers ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Corio Bay was a great location for local anglers wanting to stay near home last week.

The waterfront and inner-harbour in general hosted huge schools of Australian salmon busting up randomly.

Anglers lucky enough to be present for a bust-up had no dramas hooking into fish, some over 60cm, on either metal lures or baitfish-style soft plastics.

Pinkie snapper were also still in good numbers. Fish to more than 50cm responded well to soft plastics and pilchards or bluebait, with flathead and snook taken as bycatch.

Garfish were also present. Small bits of pippie or squid fished under a float with a light burley was effective for targeting gars either land based or at anchor.

Clifton Springs was a hot spot again for anglers chasing squid, with easy bags taken over the weed beds on size three to 3.5 jigs.

Queenscliff hosted some fantastic fishing for squid, whiting, gummy sharks and the odd kingfish. The landbased squid fishing was still exceptional, with the pier producing some thumpers and the harbour’s cut also producing quality bags on slack tide.

Offshore from Barwon heads was again a popular location in the calm conditions over the past week. Small snapper and pinkies were taken on micro jigs and bait from around the 30m mark, along with good-size gummies on fresh salmon fillets.

Further west, Port Fairy was the place to be for southern bluefin tuna.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos ventured out in search of busting fish and didn’t take long to find them. Casting the 56g Sea Iron Pelacus and Bassday Bungy stick baits into the feeding fish led to multiple hook-ups on fish pushing 30kg.

Along with the tuna, bronze whaler sharks were also present in good numbers off Port Fairy.

Freshwater fishing really started to fire up.

Wurdibuloc Reservoir produced solid redfin in good numbers on metal spoons and soft plastics. The water level is quite low, requiring long casts beyond the weed.

The odd big trout was also caught on bigger minnow-style lures at first and last light.

As the temperature starts to cool the trout fishing should only get better over the weeks to come.

Surf outlook stokes hope of young surfers A forecast of pumping surf promises a homebreak advantage to local competitors when the final round of Victorian Junior Surfing Titles arrives at Jan Juc this weekend.

Offshore winds are predicted to groom waves around 1.5 metres high on the first day of competition as locals take on contestants from eastern Victoria across six divisions.

Top juniors compete for Victorian championships and places in a state side to contest geelongindy.com.au

Australian Junior Surfing Titles later this year.

Barwon Heads’ Ellie Harrison and Phillip Island’s Codie Jeffrey have already accumulated enough points to secure the Victorian under-14 girls and under-16 boys’ state titles respectively.

The remaining divisions each have at least four surfers in contention for the state title.

“The final event of this series is always one

of the most exciting events of the year” said Surfing Victoria chief Adam Robertson.

“We have some incredible talent setting themselves up for a state title win and it will make for some exciting viewing across the weekend!”

Robertson nominated local surfers to watch as Jan Juc’s Patrick Hughes, Willis Droomer and Bella Wilson.
