A bid to introduce 80 new pokie machines in Officer has been shot down by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. After almost a fortnight of deliberation, the application by Station Hotel proprietor Timothy Rice was rejected on Tuesday night. Determined anti-gambling campaigners in Officer have celebrated the decision. Resident Jerry Field described the outcome as “common sense prevailing”. “Clearly they had the same concerns as council and the residents,” he said. “There’s a link to family violence, a link to poverty and a link to drug and alcohol abuse that comes with excessive gambling - and on this occasion, the wellbeing of the community has been put first. “It’s a big win for all of the residents who fought against this new venue.” Under the proposal, a new venue was to be created in the Officer area with additional licenses issued for the machines. The controversial scheme came before Cardinia Shire late last year, but it was unanimously quashed by councillors. Mr Rice is also contesting council’s decision in a separate VCAT hearing on 15 May. Head of the Alliance for Gambling Reform Tim Costello said the proposal was especially problematic because of its close proximity to schools. “Creating a new venue with 80 pokies within two kilometres of 12 schools and child care centres was rightly rejected by the Cardinia shire councillors and the VCGLR, so that should be the end of the matter,” he said. “We don’t need any more venues opening up in growth areas so The Station Hotel should accept the umpire’s decision and shelve its pokies push rather than pursuing a VCAT appeal.” It comes just days after Star News reported that punters in the Cardinia Shire have splurged more than $22 million on poker machines in the past nine months. Between July 2017 and March 2018, the region’s five gaming venues raked in a combined average of $2.2 million per month, according to VCGLR figures.

The Casey Cardinia region is on the cusp of an exciting new era in tourism according to Chris Buckingham, the man in charge of setting up a new Regional Tourism Board. Staffer Max Mitchell was recognised for his outstanding community service and Adrian Van Kuelen for his culinary achievements. The venue as a whole was bestowed with the title of being the best social inclusion club in Victoria. The prestigious awards were announced at a packed-house black tie function at the Sofitel in Melbourne. Nearly 50 clubs from across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria were announced as finalists, with awards offered in 32 categories. The club is renowned for being one of the biggest in Melbourne, hosting as many as 40 race meetings per year. Warragul Sporting and Social Club also featured in the event, announced as the best family club in the state. Community Clubs Victoria is the peak body representing over 1500 clubs around the state, recognising the achievements of local venues.

Bandicoots thrive in South East Endangered bandicoots are thriving in parts of Melbourne's fringe, with numbers of the marsupial also found in Cranbourne. That's according to a surprising new study from Deakin University, recently published in the Biological Conservation journal. Scientists from Deakin's Centre for Integrative Ecology set up traps to monitor numbers of southern brown bandicoots in parts of residential and farm land between Koo Wee Rup and Bunyip, south-east of Melbourne. Lead researcher Sarah Maclagan, a Deakin School of Life and Environmental Sciences PhD candidate, said the area had once been the largest swamp in Victoria, before being drained to form agricultural land in the 1870s. "There's only about five per cent of the natural vegetation left, and most of this is concentrated in narrow linear strips along drainage channels, roads and railway lines," Ms Maclagan said. "They're also full of weeds, but these strips seem to be really important habitat for bandicoots." Ms Maclagan said she was amazed to find a higher density of bandicoots within these small areas than in protected native habitat in the nearby Royal Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne and on Quail Island Nature Conservation Reserve. "We also looked at the body condition of the 'urban' animals and found that this was the same as those captured in the reserves," she said.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED "Their breeding rate was steady too, and two thirds of the animals could be classified as 'residents' of the novel sites, meaning they were observed there across multiple seasons and weren't just passing through. "So it's a weird situation where you've got weed infested roadsides harbouring an endangered mammal." Ms Maclagan said new food sources were available in residential areas. "I've spoken to lots of local landholders who have bandicoots regularly coming to eat

food intended for pets or domestic animals (like pigs and chickens). They're very opportunistic eaters." The Deakin study showed novel habitats could sometimes provide valuable conservation opportunities for certain species, she added. "We should take advantage of these opportunities whenever they arise, and not just assume that wildlife can't do well in habitats altered by humans."

A 16-year-old boy has faced a children’s court after being allegedly arrested in a stolen car in a “very serious incident" on Clyde Road, Berwick on 29 April. The boy, who cannot be identified, was taken to hospital after being arrested in the 1988 white Nissan Skyline’s front passenger seat, the court heard. He was charged with the theft of the Skyline in Narre Warren earlier that night. He also faced charges including dealing with the proceeds of crime, resisting an emergency worker and committing indictable offences on bail. At the time, the boy had breached his night curfew as part of his bail, his lawyer conceded. A magistrate on 30 April asked a Youth Justice worker what had been done to curtail the boy since his last court appearance 10 days earlier. The boy was lucky to escape injury in the “very serious incident", the judge said. He also had a significant history before the courts, the judge noted. “This was inevitable 10 days ago. “I would like to know since he was before the court what he has been doing every day of the week.” The boy had failed to appear at his day-program prior to the alleged offending, a Youth Justice worker responded. He had been due to take his learner’s driving test later this week, she said. “We thought we were covering all the safedriving practices, but clearly not enough.” The boy was receiving rehab for injuries sustained in a serious car crash in March, the court heard. “He is still lacking foresight of the consequences of road trauma, whether it’s serious injury or death,” the magistrate said. “The charges before the court are serious when you’re on bail, breaking bail conditions and getting into more trouble. “I don’t know what the answer is at the moment. (He is) completely disengaged at the moment.” The boy is believed to have an intellectual disability and Asperger’s Syndrome, and is withdrawing from cannabis use, the court heard. A co-accused boy faced another children’s court on two counts of assaulting police. The magistrate said it was unclear from police summaries who was the driver of the alleged stolen car. The boy was remanded in youth detention to appear at a children’s court on 4 May.

A Berwick woman's campaign to put a life-saving medication in affordable reach for stricken families has been successful. Julie Cini, the head of the Hallam-based group Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia, represents more than 200 families whose children suffer the cruel, rare disease SMA. She was "extremely excited" that the "phenomenal" drug Spinraza or Nusinursen was recently recommended for listing on the Federal Government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. It is otherwise prohibitively expensive about $750,000 for a 12-month course of six injections. "We eagerly await Minister (Greg) Hunt's announcement of this (PBS) listing date," Ms Cini said. In the interim, pharmaceutic maker Biogen will offer the medication free to patients that meet the PBS criteria. The PBS scheme will benefit patients under 18 and who have had symptoms of SMA since younger than three. That leaves a large "unmet need" for adult patients, Ms Cini says. "SMA Australia realise this part of our community will be devastated. "Due to the infancy of the drug and lack of robust clinical data, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) was unable to assess the extent of the meaningful benefit the drug may have on the adult population. "We encourage the adult population to contact us so we are able to better present your case to the government." She said the drug has "phenomenal" properties on children, halting the disease's degenerative march and increasing motor-function. Without the drug, the illness destroys motor neurons and muscles - the means for children to crawl, walk, feed, sit, cough,

OPINION Thanks for a great event In response to the article “Safe Schools slammed” by Brendan Rees, may I begin by thanking the wonderful council for holding this event. Thankyou Casey Council for bringing some of this disturbing material to the attention of parents. I was interested to read the comments of the anonymous teacher, who found the forum “very one-sided”. I actually had quite a lengthy conversation with this young teacher after her chat with your journalist. Among her several disturbing remarks, which undermined parental authority, probably the worst was her answer to my question regarding 13-year-old boys being required to create detailed models of female genitals using modelling clay. She didn’t deny that this happened but said that “kids are curious” and “this is better than having boys go up to girls and asking them what their vagina looks like”. I was flabbergasted. Surely any boy who makes such a remark in her “friendly open school” needs to be severely reprimanded and disciplined, as this is a highly abusive comment. Such a boy needs to be taught about manners and respect - not given modelling clay and asked to create what amounts to porn! We must scrap this program! We must get rid of this awful State Government, who continue to fund this filth when it has been scrapped in other states. Parents be vigilant! L. Grace, Berwick.

What a load of rubbish! By Cam Lucadou-Wells Walkers on a popular track next to Hessell Road retarding basin, Berwick have stumbled upon a rude shock. An enormous pile of rubbish including furniture, building products, soil, lime, mattresses, a car seat, electric frying pan, ladder and broken glass blocked the entire pathway near Valley View Crescent on 1 May. Helpfully, several bills with two names and addresses were observed on the 20-metresquare heap, and passed onto Casey Council investigators. Passer-by Nada Cosic was shocked by the "disgusting and disrespectful" sight. "There are kids on their scooters who use the path, walkers regularly use it every morning ... it's not nice. It's very upsetting." Dog-walker Reg Young said the dumpers must have used a trailer or tip-truck judging by the scale of the litter. "It's terrible - they should hit them with the highest fines possible. "It's such a beautiful area." The footpath is closed to traffic, although a removed bollard nearby provided a likely access point to vehicles. A second pile of illegal rubbish had been dumped in bushes next to the track further north near Ernst Wanke Road, according to residents. It's believed it included a document with the same name and address as found in the 1 May rubbish. Contractors with a garbage truck taped off the rubbish pile about noon. They said it may be beyond their capability to clean up the mess due to health and safety issues. Casey Council disposes of more than 600 tonnes of dumped rubbish each year. How long have you been with Cranbourne Girl Guides? Almost 21 years including as a Guide and as a Unit Leader. What is the most memorable activity/event you have experienced with Girl Guides? It's impossible to pick just one, but two of the very best I loved were a Race Around the Melbourne Zoo and a camp in Portsea where we got to see dolphins from the campgrounds. Congratulations on the Cranbourne Girl Guides 50th anniversary celebration recently. How did it go catching up with past and present members? It was so good to catch up with Guides who I haven't seen in years, and some ladies that I had been members before I came to Guides. What is the most memorable moment in your life? The moment my fiance proposed to me on stage in front of 500 people... It's hard to beat! What is your favourite television show? At the moment I'm impatiently waiting each week for more Westworld! Favourite place to visit in Victoria? I love the Dandenong Ranges and the parks you can walk through up there. It's gorgeous. What is your favourite book? I really enjoy Anne Bishop's Black Jewel Triology, I can't pick just one of them. What has been your most embarrassing moment? I think this is the same as my most memorable moment. Up on stage can be pretty daunting! What do you work toward in your free time? I don't have a lot, but a lot of it is craft exploration. Where would your perfect holiday destination be? I'd love to visit Japan and Disneyland, that would be absolutely fantastic!

Police crew targets car thefts in South East hotspots By Brendan Rees A new police crew has been set up to crack down on thieves stealing from cars in Casey. The crew, which is made up of six members from across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong, will ramp up patrols to drive

down the number of theft from motor vehicle offences. Senior Constable Alison Johnson said there had been a worrying trend of offenders breaking into cars and taking items to commit other crimes.

Sizzling with pride A decade after the doors opened, John Georgiou is still the proud owner and head chef of Beaconsfield's much-loved restaurant Georgio's Seafood and Steak House. Originally a video shop, Georgio's Seafood and Steak House was later transformed into the 100-seater restaurant that customers know and love today. John's philosophy is simple. Give customers more than enough good quality food at a reasonable price and back it up with good service, friendly staff, nice surroundings and a topnotch wine and drinks list and the rest is history. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have been working in the industry full time from 15 years old or to have talented and experienced parents involved in the industry either. John's father and mother, Con and Andrea Georgiou, have been in the restaurant industry since the 1970's in both Cyprus and England before eventually establishing their own restaurant in Australia in the 1980's.

"Con and Andrea still pop in from time to time and love to meet and greet the customers that come through our doors," John said. "We pride ourselves with serving the freshest seafood and tender chargrilled steaks, big enough to fill your plate at a reasonable price. "In fact, our menu prices are more reasonable than most of the local pubs." Apart from the full menu advertised on the restaurant's website, Georgio's also has children's menu, vegetarian menu and an exciting daily specials list that can only be viewed at the restaurant. "We will be open this Mother's Day Sunday 13 May, so book a table to celebrate with your loved ones," John said. Crunch time for the Lions By Nick Creely Ensuring that the footballers and netballers can stay together and keep up tradition is of paramount importance to Pakenham president Darren Sidebottom as the Lions consider their future. The AFL Yarra Ranges came down to Toomuc Reserve to present their proposal to all the members and committee of the Pakenham Football Club on Monday night, in a bid to have the Lions join the competition in 2019, in what would be divisional football and long term security for the club's in the south-east.

The proposal - which has had some positive feedback from the likes of Troy Robinson at Beaconsfield and Nick McLennan at Officer - was pitched to the club for the second time, with the general consensus being that they will follow suit after being pleased with the Yarra Ranges' plan to welcome them in as well as the other seven SEFNL clubs. There are rumours linking Tooradin-Dalmore to a return to the West Gippsland FNC, with the club situated right on the South Gippsland Highway and in closer proximity to the clubs in that competition.

"The meeting went well - we are still in the process of chasing a few leads, and we'll go from there," Sidebottom told the Gazette. "The Yarra Ranges presentation is the same for all clubs, it's a fantastic presentation." Sidebottom is conscious of time, and hopes to resolve the matter as soon as possible so the club can make plans for the future, and to also give time for the members to make a decision. "We're hoping to have all the relevant information really soon, and hopefully by the end of the month," he said. "We'd love to stay (in the SEFNL) and po-

tentially bring teams in, but that's not what will happen. "Ideally we want to keep football and netball together, and realistically this is our only option - but at the end of the day, it's up the members on what happens and not me, and we'll hopefully bring it to them soon. "We'll need 21 days' notice to call an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), so it's sooner rather than later for us." Sidebottom also effectively ruled out a move to the neighbouring Eastern Football League or Southern Football League.

And as a result, the Kangaroos move to a 3-0 record, and set themselves up for a chance to finally push towards clinching their first finals berth since 2004. But their next month is the challenge they've been waiting for, with clashes against Narre Warren, Beaconsfield and Cranbourne in their next four rounds to truly test their mettle. Back to the game - played on Anzac Day in front of a healthy, vocal crowd - and Pakenham threw everything they had at the Kangaroos, with the Lions discovering a harder edge to their football in the opening three rounds. At three quarter time, the score read Officer 10.2(62) to Pakenham 8.6(54), and yes, the game was as tightly contested and fierce as the scoreboard suggests, with contested ball a must and defending well of the utmost importance. Most people in the crowd would agree that the Kangaroos were likely to run over the top and have just enough class to stave off a Lion surge after the two sides kept pace in a hotly contested opening three quarters. That rung true early in the final quarter with the Kangaroos able to lock the ball inside fifty with repeat entries, and Blair Allan found the opening goal, nailing his set-shot to put the home side up by 14 points. But the Lions kept coming, and after Steven O'Bryan coolly slotted a set shot from outside 50 metre arc after a 50 metre penalty only moments later, it was game on once again. Mathersâ€™ magical season

By Hayley Wildes There is no doubt that the top of the table TAC Cup clash between the Dandenong Stingrays and Oakleigh Chargers lived up to the billing. It was tough and exciting, resulting in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire at Warrawee Park on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Rays, they were unable to keep their unbeaten record intact as they were overrun in a dominant last quarter charge by Oakleigh. Dandenong got off to a flying start with the likes of Zac Foot and Corey Ellison running riot up forward. The two combined for three first quarter goals to have the Rays leading 4.4 (28) to 1.2 (8) at the first change. The Chargers came out firing in the second quarter and two early goals had Oakleigh just eight points adrift. Shortly after, Ellison kicked his second major to regain the ascendency and the Rays went on to kick two of the last three goals of the quarter to enter half-time with a 14-point lead, 7.6 (48) to 5.4 (34). The Stingrays had their chances to create a buffer in the third quarter, but will rue their missed opportunities on goal. Scoring 1.4 for the term meant the Chargers were able to stick right with the Rays as they scored two majors of their own. In the final term, the Chargers took total control of the momentum and sliced through the Rays defence. Matthew Day slammed home the first two majors of the term to give the Chargers a one-point lead at the 13-minute mark. A little bit of Reid Nanscawen magic saw the Rays hit back not long after to regain the lead. But it wasn't enough. A Charlie Whitehead goal evened the scores, before a match-winner from Lachlan Harry - who had been absolutely everywhere all day - saw the Chargers hit the front with just minutes remaining. Some tough defence in the final stages earned the Chargers a hard-fought one-goal win over the Stingrays, 11.6 (72) to 9.12 (66).

It's only fitting that Kooweerup's star allrounder is a Richmond tragic, because what he accomplished in the 2017/18 cricket season is the local equivalent of the Dustin Martin trifecta - the player of the year, a premiership, and the best player of the grand final. The Kooweerup Cricket Club's biggest Richmond tragic, Andrew Cammarano, had taken to calling Mathers 'Dusty' throughout the latter stages of the season, and Mathers' great mate - and fellow premiership winner - Chris 'Wombat' Bright did likewise, including on Friday night's West Gippsland Cricket Association senior presentation night. Mathers' season, in claiming the Terry Stephenson Medal as the player of the WGCA Premier campaign, as well as his third straight Lex Duff Medal as the player of the grand final, was simply brilliant. The big-hitting, opening-bowling allrounder finished with 386 runs to his name at an average of 38.4 to go along with a whopping 58 wickets at just 10. He also took a career-best 9/49 in the grand final - the third chapter in a famous trilogy between Kooweerup and Pakenham. Mathers won Terry Stephenson medal ahead of Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper (who won the Glasscock Medal as the player of the WGCA's Country Week campaign) and Russell Lehman and Tom Hussey, who both played for Tooradin. After he accepted his award, a particularly modest Mathers admitted he had "carried on like a dickhead" in the past. "For a long time I was immature and carried on like a dickhead," he said. "You look at it now and as a cricketer you want to be respected.

"If I can go off the ground and be respected, I'll go home happy." Mathers said the call to move clubs from Merinda Park to the Demons prior to the start of the 2015/16 season wasn't an easy one. But it was one the Kooweerup resident felt he had to do with his young family front of mind. That decision has also so far led to two premiership wins and a host of standout performances on the WGCA's biggest stage. "You'll probably look back in a couple of years and be proud," he said. "I just try and do my little bit for the team. "Us older guys are trying to set our legacies. "I'm not a big speaker. I'm a vice captain but I probably set my example on the ground. We just set the tone, and the young boys follow." Along with the likes of experienced team mates Cooper, Bright, and Chris O'Hara, Mathers praised the efforts of Kooweerup young guns Lachie Ramage, Mitch Cammarano, and Jack Bacon throughout the season. "Just take it on - I tell the young boys," Mathers said. "You won't lose your ability, it's all in between your ears." In paying tribute to Cooper, Mathers said "he just draws the best out of you". "He spends hours and hours on his game, and he just breathes cricket," he added. Finally, he also praised two of his great mentors in Brett Armitage and Jamie Smith - describing the amount of work they'd done with him over his time at Merinda Park.
