Death in Berwick Two men have been charged with murder and attempted murder after a man died at a rooming house in Berwick on 30 April.

A 32-year-old Berwick man and a 28-yearold Longwarry man were remanded and were expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 May. Police were called to the Womens Housing Ltd residence at Wilson Street just before 12386858-LB19-18

10pm on 30 May. A 35-year-old Narre Warren man was treated at the scene but died a short time later, police say.

A female had also received non-life threatening stab wounds.

The co-accused were arrested near the scene by police that night.

Shocked neighbours told Star News they had no problems with the rooming house residents of varying ages and genders.

"I know a couple of them quite well who are in their sixties. I just hope they are OK," said neighbour Therese Kearney.

On her daily walks, she often had a "bit of a natter" to the couple who regularly sat on a bench on the home's nature strip.

The Casey Cardinia region is on the cusp of an exciting new era in tourism according to Chris Buckingham, the man in charge of setting up a new Regional Tourism Board.

The board will consist of nine directors including industry experts, tourism operators and industry service providers and will be supported by both councils to ensure the sector’s growth and long-term sustainability.

Mr Buckingham, who is chair of the Casey Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee, encouraged interested people to nominate for one of the nine board positions.

We have world class attractions like Puffing Billy, the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens and Moonlit Sanctuary. By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have raided properties in Hampton Park, Cranbourne North and Narre Warren South as part of a city-wide operation against the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang.

Fourteen men were arrested during the 18 Taskforce Echo raids from 5.15am on 2 May - the latest of several recent police operations targeting the Comancheros.

Among the raided locations were Tolpis Lane, Cranbourne North, Springfield Crescent, Hampton Park, Osmington Circuit, Narre Warren South, Chanell Close, Hampton Park, Hillview Rise, Hampton Park and Conferta Court, Cranbourne West.

The latest warrants relate to an investigation of firearm, blackmail, extortion and assault offences, police say.

Police had been specifically investigating shots fired into an unoccupied vehicle and garage in Greenvale on 25 March as well as related allegations of blackmail and extortion.

Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh, of Victoria Police, said police were committed to arresting anyone linked to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

"It doesn't matter what link you have to OMCGs, if you're engaging in or enabling criminal activity then police are going to hold you accountable for it.

"I think clearly our disruption tactics are pretty strong - and they will continue."

Asst Comm Walsh said the Comancheros

Zabi Ezedyar was gunned down outside a Narre Warren home in August due to possible mistaken identity. were traditionally involved in serious and violent crime.

"Their core activity is outlaw and that's not OK with us.

"This criminal activity and the often indiscriminate nature of it represents a severe and unacceptable risk to the safety of our community.

"It puts innocent people's lives at risk, as we've seen recently where we have made appeals for information following mistaken identity shootings linked to OMCGs." Police believe the ambush murder of 22-year-

old Zabi Ezedyar at a home at Kurrajong Road, Narre Warren on 16 August may have been a case of mistaken identity. His killer is thought to be possibly linked to the Comancheros.

The gang is also linked to the alleged mistaken-identity murder of Muhamed Yucel in a home garage in Keysborough on 2 May, 2017.

Two masked men are still at large over a recent shooting at a tattoo parlour in Hampton Park in the early afternoon of 22 February - an ambush linked to the Comancheros.

A man was critically injured while bullets blazed through the walls of adjoining businesses at the Fordholm Street shopping centre.

Asst Comm Walsh urged victims of Comanchero-related crime to report to their local police station.

She said that "frightened" and "intimidated" people with information would be protected by "robust" police protocols and procedures, including the option of reporting anonymously.

"We're not intimidated by (OCMGs) and we will not allow our communities to be."

Police from Taskforce Echo, Crime Command, Special Operations Group, Critical Incident Response Team, Operations Response Unit, local detectives from North West Metro and Southern Metro Regions and members of the Australian Federal Police took part in the 2 May raids.

Casey welcomes big State Budget spend

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The 2018-'19 State Budget has delivered an election-year splurge on roads and schools in Casey.

It attracted rare praise from Casey Council for the "biggest direct investment" in the municipality - $1.4 billion in transport and schools.

Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the Government had responded to the council's Commit to Casey campaign on behalf of a rapidly growing population.

"Planning for our current and future resident's education is vital, and so too is ensuring students can get to school safely and promptly.

"As one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia we will continue to advocate for improved roads and rail to create jobs, improve access to essential services, ease cost of living pressures and help the local community and economy thrive."

One of the schools to benefit from the budget was Hampton Park Secondary College, allocated $2.6 million over the next three years for upgraded classrooms, shared spaces and gymnasium.

Principal Rob Duncan said the orchestra pit would ensure the school could host top-class performances and enable students to flourish in a first-rate facility.

In 2018-'19, Berwick Secondary College's community hub for wellbeing and mental

health will receive the first $50,000 towards a $1.3 million State allocation over three years.

The Government has also allocated funds for new schools in Botanic Ridge, Cranbourne East and Clyde North.

Kambrya College, Fountain Gate Secondary College, and Berwick Fields Primary School also received funds for new and existing upgrades.

More than $1 billion in new road funding will be spent in the South-East in the next five years as part of a public-private partnership.

It includes Pound Road West will be widened with upgraded signalised intersections at Abbotts Road and South Gippsland Highway and a bridge over rail to connect to Remington Drive, Dandenong South.

Thompsons, Hallam North and Narre Warren-Cranbourne roads will also get upgrades as part of a $2.2 billion upgrade package for 13 suburban arterials over the next five years.

Stage two of the Monash Corridor widening project received $712 million. It includes extra lanes between Clyde and Cardinia roads, links to a duplicated O'Shea Road and smart onroad technology.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Walkers on a popular track next to Hessell Road retarding basin, Berwick have stumbled upon a rude shock.

An enormous pile of rubbish including furniture, building products, soil, lime, mattresses, a car seat, electric frying pan, ladder and broken glass blocked the entire pathway near Valley View Crescent on 1 May. Helpfully, several bills with two names and addresses were observed on the 20-metre-square heap, and passed onto Casey Council investigators.

Passer-by Nada Cosic was shocked by the "disgusting and disrespectful" sight.

"There are kids on their scooters who use the path, walkers regularly use it every morning ... it's not nice. It's very upsetting."

Dog-walker Reg Young said the dumpers must have used a trailer or tip-truck judging by the scale of the litter.

"It's terrible - they should hit them with the highest fines possible.

"It's such a beautiful area."

The footpath is closed to traffic, although a removed bollard nearby provided a likely access point to vehicles.

A second pile of illegal rubbish had been dumped in bushes next to the track further north near Ernst Wanke Road, according to residents.

It's believed it included a document with the same name and address as found in the 1 May rubbish.

Contractors with a garbage truck taped off the rubbish pile about noon. They said it may be beyond their capability to clean up the mess due to health and safety issues.

Casey Council disposes of more than 600 tonnes of dumped rubbish each year.

Mayor Geoff Ablett recently said it had become a "major issue" with more than 1300 litter reports in the past 12 months.

In that time, it had issued 216 infringements including 85 fines. Recently an offender in Casey was fined $1000 plus $2500 in costs at Dandenong Magistrates' Court.

"I encourage anyone who witnesses rubbish or illegal dumping to report this to Council immediately, so our Rapid Response Unit can attend in a timely manner to ensure we keep Casey clean," Cr Ablett said.

It was so good to catch up with Guides who I haven't seen in years, and some ladies that I had been members before I came to Guides.

What is the most memorable moment in your life?

The moment my fiance proposed to me on stage in front of 500 people... It's hard to beat!

What is your favourite television show?

At the moment I'm impatiently waiting each week for more Westworld!

Favourite place to visit in Victoria?

I love the Dandenong Ranges and the parks you can walk through up there. It's gorgeous.

What is your favourite book?

I really enjoy Anne Bishop's Black Jewel Triology, I can't pick just one of them.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I think this is the same as my most memorable moment. Up on stage can be pretty daunting!

What do you work toward in your free time?

I don't have a lot, but a lot of it is craft exploration.

Where would your perfect holiday destination be?

I'd love to visit Japan and Disneyland, that would be absolutely fantastic!

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick woman's campaign to put a life-saving medication in affordable reach for stricken families has been successful.

Julie Cini, the head of the Hallam-based group Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia, represents more than 200 families whose children suffer the cruel, rare disease SMA. She was "extremely excited" that the "phenomenal" drug Spinraza or Nusinursen was recently recommended for listing on the Federal Government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

It is otherwise prohibitively expensive about $750,000 for a 12-month course of six injections.

"We eagerly await Minister (Greg) Hunt's announcement of this (PBS) listing date," Ms Cini said.

In the interim, pharmaceutic maker Biogen will offer the medication free to patients that meet the PBS criteria.

The PBS scheme will benefit patients under 18 and who have had symptoms of SMA since younger than three. That leaves a large "unmet need" for adult patients, Ms Cini says.

"SMA Australia realise this part of our community will be devastated.

"Due to the infancy of the drug and lack of robust clinical data, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) was unable to assess the extent of the meaningful benefit the drug may have on the adult population.

"We encourage the adult population to contact us so we are able to better present your case to the government."

She said the drug has "phenomenal" properties on children, halting the disease's degenerative march and increasing motor-function.

"Children on this treatment are now seeing their second birthday and they're growing stronger."

Holt MP Anthony Byrne tabled a 11,201-signature petition in Parliament to fast-track the drug after it was rejected for PBS listing in December.

"The recommendation would see paedi-

atric patients with Types 1, 2 and 3a SMA be able to access this drug at a vital age before the severe degenerative effects of the disease take hold.

"Julie's determination to promote this drug through the media, petitioning and meetings with Parliamentarians is an example of our Parliament at its best.

"It's been a long journey which would not have been possible without the effort of a community champion such as Julie."

A 16-year-old boy has faced a children’s court after being allegedly arrested in a stolen car in a “very serious incident" on Clyde Road, Berwick on 29 April.

The boy, who cannot be identified, was taken to hospital after being arrested in the 1988 white Nissan Skyline’s front passenger seat, the court heard.

He was charged with the theft of the Skyline in Narre Warren earlier that night.

He also faced charges including dealing with the proceeds of crime, resisting an emergency worker and committing indictable offences on bail.

At the time, the boy had breached his night curfew as part of his bail, his lawyer conceded.

A magistrate on 30 April asked a Youth Justice worker what had been done to curtail the boy since his last court appearance 10 days earlier.

The boy was lucky to escape injury in the “very serious incident", the judge said. He also had a significant history before the courts, the judge noted.

“This was inevitable 10 days ago.

“I would like to know since he was before the court what he has been doing every day of the week.”

The boy had failed to appear at his day-program prior to the alleged offending, a Youth Justice worker responded.

He had been due to take his learner’s driving test later this week, she said.

“We thought we were covering all the safedriving practices, but clearly not enough.”

The boy was receiving rehab for injuries sustained in a serious car crash in March, the court heard.

The boy was remanded in youth detention to appear at a children’s court on 4 May.

In response to the article “Safe Schools slammed” by Brendan Rees, may I begin by thanking the wonderful council for holding this event. Thankyou Casey Council for bringing some of this disturbing material to the attention of parents.

I was interested to read the comments of the anonymous teacher, who found the forum “very one-sided”. I actually had quite a lengthy conversation with this young teacher after her chat with your journalist.

Among her several disturbing remarks, which undermined parental authority, probably the worst was her answer to my question regarding 13-year-old boys being required to create detailed models of female genitals using modelling clay.

She didn’t deny that this happened but said that “kids are curious” and “this is better than having boys go up to girls and asking them what their vagina looks like”. I was flabbergasted.

Risk rejected

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An early learning centre will step up its fight against the looming danger of a 100km/h section of road despite being again rebuffed by the State Government.

Little Joeys Learning Centre and neighbours are calling for a speed reduction and a right-hand turning lane near the centre on Wellington Road, Narre Warren East.

In the most recent rejection, Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan - in an answer to a question in State Parliament last week - restated VicRoads's assessment that the speed limit was appropriate.

"Speed limits are set to provide an appropriate balance between safety and mobility," Mr Donnellan wrote.

VicRoads considered factors such as the number of access points along the route, the nature of the road environment, adjacent speed zones, road user types and safety history, he stated.

The latter point makes Little Joeys director Emma Robinson wonder if there needs to be a major accident for VicRoads to act.

Parents and staff turning into the centre say they are scared of being rammed by eastbound traffic following them at high-speed.

Drivers approach from behind on a rising bend and are blind to the stationary, turning cars, Ms Robinson says.

The centre, with 149 families, is launching their second petition in recent years to urge VicRoads for a re-think.

Ms Robinson wrote to parents to support the push: "I ask you to please sign the petition to try and ensure we are heard as a community and what is best for our families does not and should not be measured on statistics."

She told Star News: "We're a community centre and we're increasing in numbers every day.

Eastern Victoria Liberal MP Edward O'Donohue, who asked the question to Mr Donnellan in Parliament, said the response was a "slap in the face for local residents who are in fear of their safety".

"It's time the city centric Andrews Government listened to these genuine concerns of the community."

In the five years up to 30 June, there was one recorded casualty on the 100km/h section - about 90 metres west of the Monash Road intersection.

However across a wider section between Berwick Road and Clematis, there have been one fatality and four serious injuries since July 2014.

Earlier this year, two cars collided in the road's 80km/h zone to the west, according to Wellington Road residents.

VicRoads has previously told Star News that the road section was assessed as consistent with similar 100km/h roads across the state.

A teenager accused of bashing another man with a baseball bat in a Narre Warren milk bar car park has had his bail application put sensationally on hold.

Jake Cruikshank, 18, and his father were coaccused of assaulting the victim at Greenridge Avenue on 28 April, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

Cruikshank - who had been on bail and parole at the time - has denied to the police that he carried a baseball bat during the incident, the bail hearing heard on 30 April.

The father and son had allegedly walked 100 metres to the milk bar to stop the victim meeting a close female relative.

The victim observed the father approaching in an "aggressive manner" and holding knuckle-dusters, police prosecutor Senior Constable Julie Delaney told the court.

The victim claimed that the teenager struck him to the head with a baseball bat.

Cruikshank also used the bat to strike the victim after he fell to the ground, and then to attack the victim's Hilux's windows and panels.

As the victim drove away, Cruikshank allegedly pointed the bat at him like it was a shotgun or rifle, Sen Const Delaney said.

The victim was treated at Casey Hospital for injuries, including a significant laceration to the head, the court was told.

Cruikshank told police the next day he didn't get involved in the fight except for calling the victim a "dog" and punching the Hilux door with his hand.

The victim was a "junkie" who was "off his head", he told police.

Sen Const Delaney said the "seriously injured" victim was in fear of his safety. Police would seek a apprehended-violence safety no-

tice to protect him, she said. "(Cruikshank) has a significant history of violence and committing offences whilst on bail."

Cruikshank also denied involvement in a home burglary in March including the theft of credit cards then used to buy $430 of items including booze and fast-food.

He was also accused of travelling in a car stolen during an aggravated burglary, and shoplifting a $75 bottle of champagne.

Defence lawyer Nicholas Hanos said his instructions were that Cruikshank at no time wielded a bat and was only supporting his father.

The victim was contravening an intervention order at the time, Mr Hanos told the court.

It was "highly important" that Cruikshank would be freed to continue his TAFE education "to be able to support himself and do something meaningful with his life".

However, after an interval, Mr Hanos notified the court that he was stepping down from the case.

Victoria Legal Aid had withdrawn its funding for the bail app due to Youth Justice not supporting the application, he told the court.

"Effectively I'm doing this pro bono at this point."

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Cruikshank that he wouldn't have granted him bail if the application had continued.

In the public gallery, a man in support of Cruikshank attempted to interject, offering to pay Mr Hanos to continue.

Mr Vandersteen rejected the man's attempts to ask the court a question. A female in the support party exploded with expletives and tears as she left the court.

Cruikshank was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 4 May.

Victim turned pest driver

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne East man has been jailed for repeated disqualified driving - and continues to be scarred by a horrific crime in his teens, a court heard.

The 42-year-old man, who had a "very significant" criminal history, including stints in jail, was caught twice illegally behind the wheel in June and September, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 30 April.

On the second occasion, there was methamphetamine detected in his system.

His vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1005.

At the time he was serving two corrections orders including drug and mental health treatment. It was nearly the 30th time he had driven a car while disqualified or suspended.

A defence lawyer conceded that the man - an on-and-off user for 15 years - had ongoing issues with 'ice' but had made "significant steps" to treating his post-traumatic stress.

As a teenager, the man had witnessed his mother's killing and was brutally attacked during the same incident.

The accused offender was however acquitted of murder, and jailed for the then-

teenager's attempted murder.

It was an outcome that the traumatised man still struggled to reconcile. He still held anger and resentment, the lawyer said.

He had recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and a "shadowing" around the heart linked to his years of drug abuse.

During the disqualified driving, the man had struggled to return to a "normal way of life" after just being released from prison, the lawyer said.

He bought a car after a victims-ofcrime payout at 16 without being properly licenced, and his continual illegal driving had continued from there, the lawyer said.

"Probably for the first time in his life, on his instructions, he's said if he's a person behind the wheel of a car, he will offend.

"So with his partner's support, his access to a motor vehicle has been taken away."

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was not surprised the man had been impacted by the dark events in his youth.

The man was jailed for six months and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was also jailed concurrently for breaching a corrections order and re-sentenced for trafficking ice and three other disqualified driving offences.

Works complete, and nature approves new wetlands

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The contentious transformation of Troups Creek West Wetland in Narre Warren North is complete.

And it seems at least popular with a wide variety of birds and frogs that have flocked to the Ken Browne Reserve ponds since bulldozers retreated.

Since August, Melbourne Water had drained the lake, rid it of about 600 exotic carp and created several interlinking wetlands.

The aim was to filter stormwater that runs down to Port Phillip, as well as provide greywater for a neighbouring housing estate.

A formal concrete path has been added to the site.

Senior project manager Jason Brown said the diversity of habitat for animals had been improved.

"There are now more plants, which improve stormwater treatment and provide ani-

mal habitat, but areas of open water have also been retained."

Mr Brown said water levels, kept low to help establish plants, would be restored to "normal" over coming months.

During a tour of the wetland, resident Ray Darbritz voiced concerns about the lack of trees and shade around the enormous banks.

The luscious revegetation of Frog Hollow Reserve was cited as an example.

Mr Darbritz also suggested extending the track so it fully encircled the wetlands.

Mr Brown said trees and shrubs could not be planted on the large retaining walls of earth to the south of the wetlands. It was against national dam regulations because they compromised the walls' structural integrity.

He said the retarding basin was designed to withstand one in 100-year floods, protecting homes that line the reserve's perimeter.

Equine hospital pledge

By Garry Howe Cranbourne’s massive horse racing fraternity will score a state-of-the-art equine hospital if the Liberal National Coalition wins government in November.

Leader Matthew Guy and Shadow Racing Minister Tim Bull visited the proposed site at the Cranbourne Training Complex on Thursday 26 April, with Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans, to announce a $1.5 million funding pledge for the project.

Mr Guy said the new hospital would cement Cranbourne’s position as a leader in thoroughbred racing while also providing the industry with access to breakthrough technology transforming equine medicine.

He said the project would fill a long-standing void for the racing industry locally.

Cranbourne is home to Victoria and Australia’s largest thoroughbred training centre, with 140 licensed trainers and 1400 horses training there. However, horses requiring scanning must still endure an unacceptable three-hour float ride to Werribee or Ballarat to access that technology.

“The fact that they don’t have an equine medical facility beggars belief,” Mr Bull said.

“The scanning technology to be made available at Cranbourne will not only allow for significant medical insight and research, but will also cut the need for three-hour float rides to Werribee or Ballarat. It will also service Mornington and Gippsland trainers.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There's a simple solution to the recycling crisis that's gripping Australian councils, according to a leading sustainability campaigner.

Tamara DiMattina, whose The New Joneses' Tiny House has set up digs at Bunjil Place, says people should just put less in their bins.

"Buy nothing in a packet," she says.

"Recycling has to be the last thing we're doing. First thing is cutting down the waste."

At the supermarket, stop buying fruit and vegetables wrapped in unnecessary plastic.

Bring recycled bags, have a coffee to-stay not take-away, get rid of drinking straws - Ms DiMattina adds.

"There are so many ways to eliminate waste in the first place."

The New Jonses' founder, with Casey

mayor Geoff Ablett and councillors Amanda Stapledon and Rex Flannery, launched a sustainable pop-up house at Bunjil on 26 April.

The house is economical on space - such as a bed that folds up into the wall - and long on tips on energy-saving, eco-friendly products and waste reduction.

Cr Ablett said the house was a "fun and interactive" way to teach families and young children how to make a "smaller footprint on the planet".

He said the council had recently introduced electric vehicles to its fleet, uses recycled crushed concrete in roadworks and offers rebates on compost bins and worm farms.

"We purchase park furniture that is made from recycled plastics, 'closing the loop' with our regular recycling service."

The New Joneses is open free at Bunjil Place until Sunday 6 May.

Amy Thompson has been earmarked in a program to fast-track young technologists.

She has lifetime membership to a Westpac100 Scholars Network to collaborate on Australia’s most pressing problems, as well as relevant work experience.

“I’m not really sure exactly what I’ll do. I’m leaving it open.

“In the future there’s going to be jobs that don’t even exist at the moment.”

The scholarship of up to $25,000 will pay off a fair chunk of her HECS bill for her IT course.

It not only takes the financial pressure off, it makes Ms Thompson feel others have faith in her.

“It’s pushing me to do my best and take hold of my future.”

Westpac Bicentennial Foundation chief executive Susan Bannigan said the scholarship fast-tracked the development of young people from “all walks of life”.

A trail-blazing Berwick IT student says she is keeping her options open - after all, the jobs of the future may not even exist yet.

Amy Thompson is one of 35 young innovators to have won Westpac Young Technologist national scholarships.

More than half of the awardees are female - a deliberate push to fast-track more gender and socio-economic diversity into technology.

Ms Thompson is already seeing positive change in her first-year class at RMIT University.

“There’s quite a number of girls in my course, many more than I expected.

“In my view, there needs to be more diversity in gender and more cultures because everyone has so much to offer.

“Having a more diverse mindset in the technology industry will create many more opportunities.”

Ms Thompson has an interest in app and website design, with plans to move into IT management.

She was always encouraged to follow her passion for computing as a student at the allgirls St Margaret’s School, Berwick.

“All of the girls were incredibly smart and had such an idea of what they wanted to do in the future.

“They were driven to go into technology fields.

“We had the largest IT class of girls that the school had so far.”

There’s a lot of options to explore in the dynamically changing IT environment, whether it’s in 3-D printing or in a coding lab.

Ms Thompson isn’t sure of where she’ll land, though it probably won’t be in a “back room” writing computer programs.

Already through her scholarship, Ms Thompson said she’d met inspiring past and present recipients, such as one designing prosthetics for war veterans.

Massive rail cash splash

By Brendan Rees A desperately needed duplication of the Cranbourne rail line is one step closer after the State Government announced its biggest rail corridor upgrade in the May State Budget.

Under a $572 million project, upgrades to tracks, stations, power and modern signalling will be delivered from the city to Cranbourne and Pakenham.

It will also pave the way for the planning of a Cranbourne line duplication.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan made the announcement on Friday 27 April, saying it was a “massive investment“ with more trains being able to run without clogging up the road network.

“We’re investing more than any government in Victoria’s history to transform our public transport system and get passengers home safer and sooner,“ she said.

Together with the Metro Tunnel and new high capacity trains, the works will make room for an additional 234,000 peak passengers every week from Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury.

It comes after the State Government announced to set aside $3 million to buy land for a Cranbourne East Railway Station last December - although date has not been announced as to when this station will be built.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport Shadow David Davis said the State Government needed to provide more rail infrastructure to meet the growing population demand.

“Casey and Cardinia have every reason to be angry. Daniel Andrews and his government have fallen short again not funding the infrastructure required to meet the burgeoning population,” he said.

“The congestion is growing and Daniel Andrews and his government have no idea how to deal with it other than cancelling a road (East West Link) at a cost of $1.3 billion.

Last week, the Victorian Greens unveiled a $5 billion Melbourne Metro transport plan, calling for the Cranbourne line to be extended to Clyde to accommodate for a rapidly expanding South East.

The plan also involves duplicating the Cranbourne line and building a new station at Cranbourne East.

‘Country manor’ sells for millions

By Brendan Rees A former country manor in Cranbourne North has sold for $2.35 million, setting an all-time high for residential properties in the area.

The property, set on 3200sq m of parklike grounds known as Tulliallan at 160 Wheelers Park Drive, was snapped up by a Narre Warren family at an auction held on Saturday, 28 April.

As part of a national tour, the Cuban-based group is said to put on a joyous exhibition of ballet and street dance with Afro-Cuban traditions to a range of Latin American music.

The dancers, trained at Cuba's prestigious Escuela Nacional de Arte and at Escuela Nacional de Ballet, have toured Europe with the show.

According to promoters, dance means "life" on the island nation.

Australian choreographer Aaron Cash has teamed with Cuban counterpart Roclan Gonzalez Chavez to blend modern salsa and Cuban dance for the show.

“It sold above expectation. Two bidders decided they both wanted it and took a bit for one to shake the other off,” he said.

“It’s probably set a new bench mark for a residential holding in Cranbourne North for some time to come.

Mr Watson said the property’s former owners, Peter White and his wife Lyndy, planned to donate all proceeds from the sale to the family’s charitable foundation to assist the lives of people disadvantaged through personal, social or cultural circumstances.

By Brendan Rees Clyde North's Hillcrest Christian College Rhea Singh has made a big sacrifice by donating her long locks to charity.

The Year 7 student shed 36cm of her healthy hair which will be sent to Hair with Heart, a campaign managed by Variety.

After watching a very moving video of a young woman affected by cancer and chemotherapy, Rhea Singh knew she had to help others.

The video showed just how much a seemingly small gesture, receiving a wig, could change a woman's life.

With some encouragement and support

from her mum and big sister, Rhea gave her long hair the chop during the recent school holidays.

"It was a big change, but my hair will grow back" said Rhea. "It feels good to know that someone's life can be changed with my hair."

Her hair will be made into a wig for children who have lost theirs due to medial conditions.

A hairdresser at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre tied Rhea's hair back into five pony tails before they were cut off. It was then washed and dried and made into one large pony tail.

Rhea's Pastoral teacher Germaine Moser said: "I am happy for Rhea; this precious donation will put a smile on someone else's face."

Cranbourne North's Catherine Ayad has made of the hardest decisions of her life - to step down from her title as Miss Australia International for 2018.

The 24 year-old was crowned this year's pageant winner in February which recognised gifted women from across the country.

But in a surprise announcement last week, Ms Ayad said she was already "Living the life I have always wanted to without any crown or sash."

"I entered into this beauty pageant to use this as a platform to fulfil my purpose on a global scale to empower and inspire others to maximize their individuality and reach their full potential regardless of their circumstances," she said.

Ms Ayad, who is passionate about empowering women experiencing adversity, added: "If my goal is to empower and inspire others then I am already doing just that, right now."

"This whole experience has been phenomenal, with ups and downs, like everything.

I have grown as a person and I am forever thankful for everything that has happened so far."

She recalled sharing one of the most touching moments with a girl who looked up to her - which she says she will carry in her heart forever.

"I will never ever forget that little girl who said 'I want to be a princess just like you.' I said to her: 'You already are a princess your crown is just invisible'. She stood up a little taller and had the biggest smile on her face when she hugged me."

Ms Ayad apologised to anyone she may have disappointed but felt relieved with her final decision.

"In my heart I am staying true to myself. I will continue to be me but reflect Christ as best I can."

Indie is the big bird’s baby

By Melissa Grant If you ask Indie Denney where she was born, the three-year-old will smile and reply “outside the big bird”.

The ‘big bird’ she’s referring to is the famous 25-metre high golden pheasant at the front of Gumbuya World.

The Pakenham girl was delivered in an ambulance parked outside the theme park on May 16, 2014 in what was a super quick labour for mum Belinda.

“It was the only spot on the side of the highway they thought was safe to pull over,” Belinda recalled.

“She was delivered within seconds of them parking here.”

The entire labour was four hours from start to finish, and initially Belinda and husband Tom thought they would be welcoming their second born into the world at their Cardinia Lakes home.

“Tom was prepping for delivery on our bed,” Belinda said.

“He was on the phone with the ambulance and they were coaching him through. When the paramedics arrived you could see the relief on his face.”

Fortunately, the paramedics arrived within five minutes and Belinda somehow managed to make it into the back of the ambulance.

The sirens had been blaring as the ambulance headed down the Princes Highway towards Warragul Hospital when Belinda had a sudden urge to push.

“I definitely did not think I’d deliver a baby outside Gumbuya Park. You deliver a baby at a hospital not in transit,” Belinda said with a laugh.

Indianna Belle Denney arrived a day before her due date, weighing 10 pounds.

There were tears of joy, including from the paramedics who had just delivered their first baby.

Belinda, Tom and Indie returned to the ‘big bird’ on the way home from hospital for a reenactment photo. That was the last time the Denney family have been anywhere near the theme park, although they are keen to return to see the refurbished attraction and potentially take Indie there for her fourth birthday.

“I’d love to go to the park to see what they’ve done to the place - I’ve heard amazing things,” Belinda said.

Krystel’s mum Karen has always been her pillar of strength, her confidant and her greatest fan.

So when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Krystel said it was a moment when the ‘tables turned’ and she needed to be there for her mum.

“For a lady who was the strongest woman I’ve ever met, seeing her on the lounge after her first chemotherapy was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face,” Krystel said.

“She was so physically unwell that it broke down not only her strong motherly presence but her entire character. I was upset for her, for my sisters and for my stepfather who had absolutely no idea how to make it better.”

Diagnosed at just 48, Karen had no family history of breast cancer and her diagnosis was a shock for the entire family.

Today, following treatment, she is well and enjoying life with her children and grandchildren.

“We know the treatments mum received and benefitted from are thanks to breast cancer clinical trials research,” Krystel said.

“Mum and I also know there are many other women, other mums perhaps, who need our help because better treatment options for their type of breast cancer have not yet been discovered.”

Krystel and Karen are sharing their story to support the annual Mother’s Day Research Appeal conducted by Breast Cancer Trials. They’re encouraging people to donate to Breast Cancer Trials as their Mother’s Day gift for their mum. A decade after the doors opened, John Georgiou is still the proud owner and head chef of Beaconsfield's much-loved restaurant Georgio's Seafood and Steak House.

Originally a video shop, Georgio's Seafood and Steak House was later transformed into the 100-seater restaurant that customers know and love today.

‘Theft’ crew

By Brendan Rees A new police crew has been set up to crack down on thieves stealing from cars in Casey.

The crew, which is made up of six members from across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong, will ramp up patrols to drive down the number of theft from motor vehicle offences.

Senior Constable Alison Johnson said there had been a worrying trend of offenders breaking into cars and taking items to commit other crimes.

"The number of obtain property be deceptions has increased in the area so people stealing wallets and cards from vehicles and then going to use them to purchase items using PayPass," she said.

Stolen cards were being used in illegal shopping sprees, particularly at Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and also service stations in Casey, Sen Const Johnson said.

The crew started on 16 April and will be trialled for three months. If successful, Sen Const

Johnson says the initiative will continue.

An 18-year-old Doveton man was arrested on 20 April - within a week of the crew starting.

It's believed the man was allegedly involved in stealing a vehicle in February last year, as well as a theft of petrol, a burglary and theft in Lyndhurst, theft of number plates and obtaining property by deception.

Sen Const Johnson said the man was identified in CCTV footage where it's alleged he was involved in a petrol drive-off and deception offences at Coles Express in Lynbrook early last year. The man will face court at a later date.

Sen Const Johnson warned drivers not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to always ensure their car was locked when unattended to prevent thefts.

According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency report on 15 March, there were 1834 reported burglaries and break-ins, with more than 6900 thefts for the year in Casey. That's about five burgs, 19 thefts a day.

Grassroots sports get cash

By Brendan Rees Nearly $11,000 in grants will be shared by five of City of Casey’s grassroots sporting clubs, the State Government has announced.

Minister for Sport John Eren joined Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera and AFLW Melbourne Demons players at Casey Fields on Thursday, 26 April in announcing funding for the clubs through the Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program.

Clubs include Devon Meadows Junior Football Club ($2,000) for coach training, Casey Comets Soccer Club ($1000) for new uniforms, Cranbourne Bowling Club ($1,000) for new uniforms plus a further $5,000 to redevelop the club’s website, South Sudan Equatorians Association for new soccer uniforms ($1,000) and Cranbourne Southern Stars Sports Club for new netball uniforms ($990).

Mr Eren also officially announced a $5 million investment to upgrade facilities to better support AFLW at Casey’s premier sporting precinct.

Grassroots competitions in the south east

“Whether it’s a new uniform or bringing more footy to Casey Fields, we’re giving grassroots clubs in Casey the support they need to grow their ranks and help more locals than ever play the sports they love.”

Treasurer of the Cranbourne Southern Stars Sports Club Dell Johnson said the grant was a huge relief which would go towards new equipment and uniforms.

“Uniforms are a huge expense. We can provide training venues that aren’t at the cost of the kids, so we can get a lot more people to participate in the sport,” she said.

Also at the announcement was City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett who welcomed the funding.

“Through our partnership with Melbourne Football Club, we’re working closely together to increase participation and provide pathways from grassroots to elite levels for local women and girls,” he said.

Grand plans for stadium

By Nick Creely A world class sport and entertainment venue right in the heart of Greater Dandenong?

That’s the plan if Melbourne’s south-east becomes home to an A-League and W-League club, in what could become one of the great drawcards the region has ever seen.

The prime location of Cheltenham Road, next to Dandenong Train Station, has been confirmed as the site of Team 11’s proposed stadium build, with the world class concept designed by Cox Architecture (designers of Melbourne’s AAMI Park).

It has been initially slated that the capacity would be in the range of 12,000-15,000, with the ability to expand to 20,000 in the future.

The stadium site is less than 100 metre walk from one of Victoria’s busiest train and bus stations and within five kilometres of the Monash Freeway and Eastlink.

The Journal understands that the stadium could cost up to $170 million, but Team 11 are believed to be working on staging options, which could see the stadium built over time, therefore potentially reducing the initial cost to under $100 million.

It is also understood that is likely to be a two-year build period, so it is unlikely it would be up and running until at least the start of the 2020-21 season.

The announcement of the stadium concept is the next major step in the Team11 bid after the Football Federation Australia (FFA) recently announced its expansion plans.

The A-League currently has 10 teams contesting, and will bring in a further two for the 2019-20 season, with the early indication being that one of those slots could be given to a new Sydney based team.

Dandenong-born Simon McKeon, chair of the South East Melbourne group of councils, said south-east Melbourne is crying out for a professional sporting club to train and play here.

“There are more than 1.2 million living people in south-east Melbourne and families would love the opportunity to come together with the wider community to support a team they can identify strongly with and watch play at a purpose-built stadium,” McKeon said.

In fact, there are 89 clubs based in the south-east Melbourne region and over 12,000 registered players currently playing the sport.

Adding to that, three semi-professional clubs in NPL Victoria in the region - Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles - are fully behind the bid, and have become actively involved in the discussions.

McKeon said the region provides a large, ready-made army of diverse, enthusiastic supporters who already love the world game.

“It’s a no-brainer,” McKeon said. “The beautiful game would find a perfect home among a massive group of professional supporters at an easily accessible location next to Dandenong Train Station.”

Various funding options for the stadium build are being explored, with Development Victoria, Ernst and Young, Cox Architecture and Greater Dandenong Council working together on development plans for the site.

The stadium build - as well as a proposed Casey Fields Centre of Excellence, where the team’s training and administration facilities would be based - is predicated on Team 11 being admitted into the A-League.

Socceroos legend and Team 11 ambassador Vince Grella said the new club would be playing at a football-specific venue with an intimacy that would rival all others in the country.

“Football fans in Australia have been crying out for boutique venues in which to house our clubs. Dandenong Stadium is perfect,” Grella said.

“There are more people playing football than any other sport in this country.

“Not only will Team 11 be able to enjoy this facility, but the potential for Socceroos, Matildas and youth internationals to be played here is very real, as well as local club games and regional gala events and tournaments.”

The land proposed for the stadium is owned by the City of Greater Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong Councillor and Team 11 steering committee member Jim Memeti said the unveiling of stadium plans demonstrates the seriousness of the region’s bid, spearheaded by the Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils.

“With Greater Dandenong being the most multicultural municipality in Australia, football is the No.1 sport of choice for our residents and so it is fitting that a rectangular venue would sit pride of place in the heart of our Central Business District,” Cr Memeti said.

Weekend brings a mixed bag for the Cavaliers

By Hayley Wildes In Round 6 Big V action, the Casey Cavaliers went 2-2 in a tough weekend for the State Championship Men and Division 1 Women.

The State Championship Men battled valiantly against the top-placed Ringwood Hawks, but were unable to stay with them in the second half.

The Cavs certainly came to play and were leading at half time, but the Hawks were able to claw their way back and record a 100-94 win. Raheem Lemons (23 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists) came close to a triple-double and was a force all game.

The Division 1 Women fell short against the Mildura Heat at home on Sunday afternoon, 71-79.

Tanarly Hood (24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) continued her dominant form, but her 7 turnovers proved costly. Rebecca Borham was impressive on both ends of the court as she hustled for loose balls and played some great defence.

Alexis Gassion (28 points, 19 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) was simply sublime for the Heat and her willingness to push the tempo caught the Lady Cavs out on many occasions.

Unfortunately, Casey's inability to execute down the stretch staved off any chances of a

comeback in the dying minutes of the game.

The Youth League 1 Men had their hands full on defence with Ballarat's Zach Dunmore (37 points, 10 rebounds) putting on a show, but a team effort got the Cavs home quite comprehensively against the Miners.

Mitchell Gooiker (21 points, 16 rebounds) was unstoppable, whilst Brendon Head (25 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) and Luke Beard (16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists) helped power the Cavs to a 96-77 win.

The Youth League 2 Women remain undefeated and on top of the ladder after disposing of the Western Port Steelers, 68-53, at home on Sunday.

Tess Young continues to prove her worth week in, week out and against the Steelers, she

once again took control of the game with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.

As Young dominated on both ends of the court, Lauren Tuplin (19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals) and Stephanie Leclerc (6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists) stood up and contributed greatly to the Lady Cavs stifling defence, which led to the Steelers' 29 turnovers.

The State Championship Men have a busy schedule in round 7, facing the Corio Bay Stingrays on Saturday night in Geelong, before returning home to face Eltham on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm.

The Youth League 1 Men also play Corio Bay in Geelong on Saturday night.

A Saturday night Youth League 2 and Division 1 Women's double-header tips off at Casey Stadium from 6pm.

Demons denied by Cats

By Hayley Wildes Casey was no match for Geelong in the Demons' first home game of the season at Casey Fields on Saturday night.

The Cats stamped their authority in the first half and the Demons were unable to find a way through Geelong's defence, managing just one goal in each of the first two quarters.

It was a tough night at the office for Casey, but they did put some respectability back on the scoreboard with a stronger second half effort, highlighted by a four goal to one final term.

In a sloppy first quarter, the Demons' ball use was subpar and whilst the Cats didn't put a heap of scoreboard pressure on, the signs were certainly ominous.

A 14-point deficit at quarter time flattered Casey, but it wasn't long until Geelong took total control of the game.

The damage was done in a five-minute second quarter burst that saw Geelong pile on three quick goals to stretch their lead out to 32 points. Jamaine Jones booted two of those goals, as he and Stewart Crameri (two goals) were proving dangerous.

A Thomas Bugg goal reduced the margin, but a further two goals had Geelong leading 8.5 (53) to 2.3 (15) at the main break.

The likes of Tim Smith and Billy Stretch were finding the ball for Casey, but Geelong's Ben Reid and Timm House were simply dominant.

An even third term saw Geelong take a 40-point lead into the final term.

After Goy Lok kicked his second major of the fourth quarter and Casey's third in a row, the deficit was just 24 points, with Casey possessing all of the momentum.

It was too little, too late though as time was against the Demons.

Geelong went onto record a 22-point win,

12.12 (84) to 9.8 (62).

In what was a disappointing game for Casey, there just weren't enough contributors across the board as Geelong's midfielders ran riot with Zac Smith dominating in the ruck and giving the Cats first use of the ball.

For Casey, Tim Smith (31 disposals) was valiant all day and a standout best on ground for the Demons. Goy Lok and Angus Scott (two goals each) were dangerous up forward, but a lack of opportunity and ball poor ball disposal up the ground made life difficult for Casey's forwards.

The loss was Casey's second in a row and the Demons now own a 2-2 record, sitting sixth on the ladder as they head into a bye week.

By Nick Creely Most people associate Friday the 13th as an unlucky day in Western superstition.

But for Berwick sport shooter Laetisha Scanlan, it's the complete opposite, a day where the stars align and luck is on her side.

So it was only fitting that on Friday 13 April at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games - also Laetisha's 28th birthday - that she would win gold once again in the Women's Trap event, taking her overall gold medal tally to three after wins in 2010 Delhi and 2014 Glasgow.

While she still soaks up the enormity of her achievements on state-tour, Laetisha admits that it was a twist of fate that she could claim glory on her birthday, and on that particular day.

"You probably don't realise your achievements until you sit back and reflect, it's definitely easy to get caught up in all the excitement," she said.

"It was funny, Friday the 13th is not always the luckiest number for some, but I like to think of myself as quite superstitious, it was honestly the best birthday present you could ask for, and to go back to back in the event is a special feeling for sure."

After winning the same event in Glasgow, Laetisha learnt a lot about preparation, and said that her past experiences put her in good shape for gold.

"I had a plan with my coach, we went up on 1 April and kind of just soaked it all in - I then came home for a week and came back a couple of days before my event, it certainly helped me," she said.

"There was just an ease, and I think winning the last time around certainly helped."

Winning gold in front of her country after scoring 38 out of 50 to edge Northern Ireland's Kirsty Barr in the trap shooting final, and her family and friends is an experience she will treasure forever.

"It (the crowd) was amazing, it was so unexpected to be honest, usually there are not many people at shooting events, but every stand was full," she said.

"People did warn me about the crowd, and my event was last, and it was honestly so crazy

- seeing my family and friends was just incredible, and I really felt like the crowd was behind me all the way.

"I managed to win on my very last shot which I needed to make, and to have the support for me was a big factor in me getting over the line."

While the shooter would love to have another crack at winning three times in a row, she will have to sit and wait as to whether her event is in the Games in Birmingham, but has her sights set on redemption on Olympic glory.

"After three golds, I would love to continue on, but shooting's been taken out of the Birmingham 2022 Games, which is a bit disappointing," she said.

"But I'm setting my sights firmly on Tokyo 2020, there's some unfinished business for me after the Rio games, and I can't wait to get stuck in." berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 4 Keysborough have continued its unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought win over East Brighton.

It was a tight match all day, but Matthew Carnelley (five goals) proved to be the matchwinner as the Burras claimed the 10.12 (72) to 10.6 (66) win.

The Doveton Eagles also remain undefeated. Doveton 20.21 (141) took control after quarter time against Hampton 8.10 (58), as Peter Dye ran riot on his way to booting 10 majors.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 2 Hampton Park was simply dominant against South Yarra.

Nathan Carver (seven goals) and Michael Henry (five goals) were too much for South Yarra as they ran away 25.20 (170) to 1.2 (8) winners.

Hallam, meanwhile, may have kicked the only goal of the first term, but it was all Ash-

wood after that.

A five-goal haul to Christopher Grove saw Ashwood claim the comprehensive 15.19 (109) to 4.6 (30) win. Jonathan Daly and Matthew Studd (two goals) were best for Hallam.

Shane Cosstick (five goals) and Nathan Isles were best for the Cobras, leading their team to

a nail-biting 10.6 (66) to 9.6 (60) win over the Redlegs. Michael Scott, Jayke Hopkins (two goals) and David Barrie (three goals) were best for Dandenong.

Lyndhurst 15.15 (105) were far too strong for Moorabbin 9.2 (56) as Hugh Cullen-Scholes and Anthony Besim took control of the game for the Lightning.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 4 At Somerville, Pearcedale disappointingly fell by 53 points to the inaccurate Eagles, 14.23 (107) to 8.6 (54).

Daniel Heijden and Luke Dalmau battled valiantly for Pearcedale, but Somerville's depth proved too much.

TAC CUP GIRLS - ROUND 7 After losing their first five games, the Stingrays have made it back-to-back wins, with an impressive display against the Oakleigh Chargers.

Alice O'Sullivan and Jordyn Allen led the way for the Stingrays, who claimed the 8.8 (56) to 4.4 (28) win.

There is no doubt that the top of the table TAC Cup clash between the Dandenong Stingrays and Oakleigh Chargers lived up to the billing.

It was tough and exciting, resulting in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire at Warrawee Park on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Rays, they were unable to keep their unbeaten record intact as they were overrun in a dominant last quarter charge by Oakleigh.

Dandenong got off to a flying start with the likes of Zac Foot and Corey Ellison running riot up forward. The two combined for three first quarter goals to have the Rays leading 4.4 (28) to 1.2 (8) at the first change.

The Chargers came out firing in the second quarter and two early goals had Oakleigh just eight points adrift.

Shortly after, Ellison kicked his second major to regain the ascendency and the Rays went on to kick two of the last three goals of the quarter to enter half-time with a 14-point lead, 7.6 (48) to 5.4 (34).

The third quarter was an absolute arm wrestle as both teams battled to gain the momentum. Jake Frawley was at his dominant best - creating plenty of attacking forays for the Stingrays and taking the game on, whilst Luke McDonnell and Lachlan Young were crucial around the ground.

The Stingrays had their chances to create a buffer in the third quarter, but will rue their missed opportunities on goal. Scoring 1.4 for the term meant the Chargers were able to stick right with the Rays as they scored two majors of their own.

In the final term, the Chargers took total control of the momentum and sliced through the Rays defence. Matthew Day slammed home the first two majors of the term to give the Chargers a one-point lead at the 13-minute mark.

A little bit of Reid Nanscawen magic saw the Rays hit back not long after to regain the lead.

But it wasn't enough.

A Charlie Whitehead goal evened the scores, before a match-winner from Lachlan Harry - who had been absolutely everywhere all day - saw the Chargers hit the front with just minutes remaining.

Some tough defence in the final stages earned the Chargers a hard-fought one-goal win over the Stingrays, 11.6 (72) to 9.12 (66).

In what was a disappointing second half, the Rays were outscored 2.6 (18) to 6.2 (38).

Their inaccuracy in front of goal was ultimately the difference in the game as the Chargers took their chances and the Rays didn't.

Jake Frawley battled valiantly all day and was best for the Stingrays. Lachlan McDonnell and Lachlan Young were also impressive, while Zac Foot and Corey Ellison (two goals each) were dangerous up forward.

Corey’s senior debut a lifetime in the making

By Russell Bennett Just under five years ago, a 20-year-old Corey Davis strode out on to the field to play his first game of footy - a real bucket list experience.

Back then, he could never have dreamt that he’d go on to play a senior game.

For him, simply playing any competitive game was a dream come true.

He was born 15 weeks premature and suffered brain damage from a series of haemorrhages before he’d even turned one. To this point he doesn’t know exactly how many operations he’s had, but he knows it’s “at least 10”.

One of those involved having a shunt inserted into the back of his head. It runs down into his stomach and seemed certain to quell any footballing dreams ever had.

port around him had grown to epic proportions and he made his debut in reserves for his beloved Bunyip Bulldogs, the local club he’d trained with in every session he possibly could since 2007.

Such was the mark of respect that Corey’s team mates had for him, he even led the group out of the rooms and on to the ground - skipper for a day.

“I’d dreamt of that moment every single day of my life,” Corey said in the wake of his first game.

“Now that’s something I can finally cross off my bucket list.”

On Saturday against Ashwood, he went a step further - finally making his senior debut for his current club Hallam in the Southern Football League (SFL), the same club that his partner Brooke plays for.

Though the result didn’t go the Hawks’ way - losing the Division 3 clash by 79 points, 15.19 (109) to 4.6 (30) - Corey was just thrilled to wear the number 57 out on to the ground. It meant the world to him.

He admitted he took a quarter to get used to the speed and skill of the game, but was proud that he made his opponent work for every touch he got.

Back in 2013, Star News wrote that the footy scriptwriters couldn’t have planned Corey’s story any better than his Bunyip side’s win over Nilma Darnum.

But on Saturday, another surprise chapter was written.

For a man with competitive fire burning within and a never-say-die attitude to match, who knows what’s in store next.

Roos stave off the Lions

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 3 (SPLIT ROUND) With the game well and truly on the line midway through the last quarter, Officer dug deep and showcased a new found maturity in their football.

And as a result, the Kangaroos move to a 3-0 record, and set themselves up for a chance to finally push towards clinching their first finals berth since 2004.

Back to the game - played on Anzac Day in front of a healthy, vocal crowd - and Pakenham threw everything they had at the Kangaroos, with the Lions discovering a harder edge to their football in the opening three rounds.

At three quarter time, the score read Officer 10.2 (62) to Pakenham 8.6 (54), and yes, the game was as tightly contested and fierce as the scoreboard suggests, with contested ball a must and defending well of the utmost importance.

Most people in the crowd would agree that the Kangaroos were likely to run over the top and have just enough class to stave off a Lion surge after the two sides kept pace in a hotly contested opening three quarters.

But the Lions kept coming, and after Steven O’Bryan coolly slotted a set shot from outside 50 metre arc after a 50 metre penalty only moments later, it was game on once again.

The sheer toll of pressure placed on the Lions eventually broke, and the Kangaroos’ maturity shone through, with Michael Thompson slotting a brilliant goal from the pocket and moments later icing the game with a set shot that was steered through on the goal line.

It ended a brave resistance from the Lions, who kept running despite James Waldon and Stephen Heppel unrelenting in defence, with coach Ash Green explaining that the group is disappointed with certain aspects but could hold their head high at their overall improvement in games.

“We need to play four quarters of football, it was a big occasion and we’re certainly disappointed in the result,” he said.

“More disappointing was the fact that we have six goals from undisciplined acts, and that hurts.

“We certainly got better after starting a bit slowly, but we’re under no illusions that we have plenty of work to do.”

While the Kangaroos eventually ran over the top with ruckman Sean Roach - the eventual Anzac Day Medal winner - playing a colossal final term and having a major say on the result, Green expected his side to win.

“I was quietly confident with our fitness we needed to score early, and we didn’t, and free kicks against us were certainly deflating in the end,” he said.

“To Officer’s credit, they defended really well, but we’re a new team this year and it probably doesn’t help, but it creates excitement going forward.”

Roach was brilliant for the Kangaroos in the ruck and has come on in leaps and bounds, while Stephen Hawkins (three goals) hit the scoreboard in a dynamic display.

The Kangaroos eventually ran out 14.7 (91) to 10.7 (67) winners.

Down at Berwick, reigning premiership coach Stewart Kemperman was still left a bit disappointed in some inconsistency in patches throughout the game.

Coming up against Doveton on Saturday at Edwin Flack Reserve, the Wickers were always going to be far too strong, slick and experienced, but the final margin, 22.13 (145) to 8.8 (56) - nearly 15 goals - was perhaps not reflective of the game after quarter time.

It seemed it would be a scary day at the office for the Doves when the home side piled on eight unanswered goals to take a 46 point quarter time lead.

Madi Andrews, Ash Smith and the impassable Jo West were destructive early, but it was a Money show, in the name of dynamic small forward Harry.

A brilliant snapping goal from 35 out in the first quarter got him off to a perfect start, and from there it was a masterclass of speed, elusiveness and an aerial presence as good as any, ending with three first quarter goals - including a brilliant running goal that featured speed and dare -that quickly ballooned out to an as46 STAR NEWS

An almighty bake from Doves coach Daniel Charles did wake the visitors up briefly in the second term, with Russ Gabriel starting to take some control in the stoppages, Matthew Boyd using all of his experience to marshal the backline and exciting forward Riley D’Arcy (three goals) getting hold of Will Arthurson in an intriguing battle and taking several contested marks deep forward.

Despite more brilliance from Money, the Doves equalized the quarter despite the Wickers looking ominous once again in attack with Travis Tuck and Bryce Rutherford all spending time isolated as the deepest forward and Andrews often using his laser foot to find teammates in space.

While the Wickers slammed on 10 second half goals - including a further three from Money - all from different angles and distances - to finish with nine in a game that sees him climb to the top of the goal kicking table - the Doves proved that their best football has the potential to match it in patches, with young guns Gach Nyuon and Will Smith combining to give a glimpse of the club’s future.

“We certainly started well in response to last round’s loss to Narre Warren, and I couldn’t really fault the guys’ efforts in the first quarter, and our intent and enthusiasm,” Kemperman said of his side’s performance.

“From there, we lost our way a little bit, and credit to Doveton, they fought back and we were a little reactive in transition - we didn’t quite play that quarter, and perhaps part of the third quarter the way we wanted to.

“We addressed that at three quarter time, and I think the intent was there in the last quarter, despite the scoreboard not ticking over, it probably should have been a lot more, but our intent was better.”

But Kemperman warned his side is well off where they need to be, and is confident that once they find the right mix, there will be a more consistent four quarter effort.

“We’re certainly not at our best at the minute, and in terms of our selection we’re waiting on a few players to come back from injury - we had two debutants over the weekend, Dylan Morris and Mat McLardy, and they did really well,” he said.

“Our best footy is still ahead of us, and finding that right balance of players - there’s still quite a bit of movement with selection, and there’s some change to come, and we’ll have to manage that smartly.”

Meanwhile, Cranbourne flexed its muscles

Bryce Rutherford slips a desperate Doveton tackle on Saturday. 180268 and made Tooradin’s homecoming a painful experience on Anzac Day, with the Eagles’ blistering seven goal final term seeing them move to a 2-2 record, 9.11 (65) to 18.13 (121).

The two sides battled it out in the traditional Anzac Day blockbuster, with the rivals getting the first look at the new turf, and it was certainly a hot start.

A classy set shot from Seagull recruit Dean Warry got the home side on the board, but the Eagles worked its way back from an early 13 point deficit to enter the quarter time break with a handy seven point lead.

And a pair of 50 metre penalties - which resulted in easy goals to Dylan Cavalot and Tom Marks - made it a dominant second quarter by the visitors and undid a half of pressure and intensity, streaming out to a 26 point lead at the major break.

The Seagulls refused to give in and worked its way back into the contest, slashing the margin back to as much as 15 points at three quarter time, with Luke McKenna and Jason Kestle’s drive off half back, and typically industrious performances by Warry, Matt Sloper and skipper Matt Livermore keeping them within arm’s reach of an upset.

“We planned well for them, and we knew what to expect from them - we’re confident

that we’re a fit side, and we’ve proven that all year,” Eagles coach Steve O’Brien said after his side then slammed on seven unanswered goals to run out 56 point winners.

“Looking back to the Narre Warren game, we didn’t have a bench for the majority but kept coming at them, but you’re always a bit worried about the opposition, but we just had to trust our system and it paid off in the end.”

That fitness O’Brien speaks of certainly came to the fore in a sensational last quarter that began from the bounce of the ball.

Marking on the lead from 30 out, the commanding Nathan Gardiner (five goals) slotted a major in the opening minute to stretch the margin out to 21. Despite a barrage of inside 50’s, the Seagulls repelled the ball, but the dam wall was always going to burst wide open.

Gardiner goaled once again after a superb, laser like pass from Anthony Vella, before the classy midfielder snapped truly. The wall had been broken.

A tiring Seagulls outfit could not match the intensity of Vella and his Eagles, with the Port Melbourne listed player running home strong to take out the Anzac Day Medal as his side slammed home four more goals in the last 11 minutes. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
