Hub doors open

By Derek Schlennstedt Dandenong Ranges residents will now have access to essential community health services after the much-anticipated Belgrave Community Hub opened its doors on 21 April.

The $9.67 million hub has been built to respond to the high demand for allied health, family and children services and dental services in the area.

In addition, the hub provides purpose-built accommodation for visiting specialist services, including mental health, public dental and family violence services.

Funding for the project has seen a union of all government levels.

The project was jointly funded by the Australian Government ($3,835,000), the Victorian Government ($1,723,000), Yarra Ranges Council ($3,865,000) and Inspiro ($250,000).

Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood - who opened the hub alongside Monbulk MP James Merlino, Yarra Ranges Cr Mike Clarke and Mayor Len Cox - said the new building was a welcome replacement for its ageing predecessor.

"This project constructed a two-storey, multi-purpose health building with an open plan office hosting 27 work stations, two kitchens and a car park with capacity for 50 cars; great for the community and council's needs," Mr Wood said.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino echoed Mr Wood's comments noting the importance of the project to the wider community."This is an important project for our community and I am glad to see it finally completed,"Mr Merlino said.

"This project will improve community connections, enhances services, and provides greater opportunities in our local community."

Victorian Minister for Regional Development, Jaala Pulford, said the hub would also cater for those in need, with shower and laundry facilities open for public use.

Other groups may also use the site and Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) has since permanently moved into the lower building.

The facility also provides rooms for the community to hire.

The community is free to visit and chat to an Inspiro Health Services staff member between Tuesday and Thursday.

hind the hub, while a community garden with numerous plots will soon be available for community use via an expression of interest process.

Council Director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said she was thrilled to see the hub open.

Ms Wastie acknowledged the incredible support the project had received.

"We are thrilled to see this project complete and ready for the community to use," Ms Wastie said.

"The hub is an important partnership between Council and Inspiro, who is managing the facility.

"We would like to acknowledge the continued support from Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, and Deputy Premier and State Member for Monbulk, James Merlino."

Inspiro is allowing council to use their land at 1622-1624 Burwood Highway for the car park at no cost to council.

Inspiro will cover 50 per cent of the running costs, estimated around $120,000 annually.

By Peter Douglas Emerald resident Chris Hall says VicRoads have offered a Band-aid solution to a notorious local intersection.

As one of many residents in the area concerned about the intersection of Charman Avenue and Emerald-Monbulk Road, Mr Hall has raised concerns with VicRoads' officers, who have agreed that safety measures are needed.

In the coming months, VicRoads is expected to implement 'short-term' measures, such as moving the 'dangerous corner ahead' sign closer to the bend, installing a speed warning sign on approach of the bend, and moving the convex mirror to a more effective position.

Although pleased VicRoads has offered a response, Mr Hall said it won't reduce the obvious dangers for users of the road.

"Locals know it's a bad stretch of road. At the intersection, cars come around the bend in a fraction of a second. There is no room for error," Mr Hall said.

"If a hoon is coming around that bend at speed ... well, it's just a disaster waiting to happen."

Mr Hall would like to see further measures implemented, including the installation of a median strip, or widening of the road.

He said this would give drivers more opportunity to take evasive action, in such instances when another driver veers across their own lane.

Mr Hall said a VicRoads senior officer acknowledged the intersection presented a danger for drivers, but VicRoads has stopped short of committing to any significant works.

"They said the major constraint on doing anything of substance is funding, which comes from above, and they have no idea as to when funding might become available," he said.

"But, also there are competing danger spots.

Stronger penalties for drink and drug driving are now in place.

From Monday, 30 April, first-time drink drivers who record a blood alcohol reading between .05 and .069 will lose their licences for a minimum of three months.

All drink drivers will now face mandatory alcohol interlocks fitted to their vehicles for a minimum of six months.

Licence suspensions for drivers detected with illicit substances in their system will also increase from three to six months and from six to 12 months for repeat offenders.

From 30 April, the following changes will come into place: All drink drivers (including first time offenders) recording a BAC of 0.05 and over will lose their licences for a minimum of three months.

All drink drivers will face mandatory interlock conditions for a minimum of six months.

All drink and drug drivers will be required to participate in a behaviour change program.

Victorian drivers convicted of drink or drug driving interstate will be subject to Victorian drink-driving penalties.

Council spend out for comment, as rates rise looms

By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council released its 2018-19 draft budget on Friday, 27 April, with a mix of good news for improved infrastructure and services, and not so good news in the form of a predicted increase in rates and the waste charge.

The Council adopted the draft budget in principle at its April 24 meeting, along with its 2018-19 to 2021-22 Strategic Resource Plan and its 2018-19 to 2027-28 Long Term Financial Plan.

The draft budget and proposed plans are open for community comment until Thursday, 24 May. Rates will increase by an average of 2.25% in line with State Government rules and the predicted waste charge is a 15% increase, or roughly $31 per household.

The Council has identified replacements and upgrades of pavilions, playspaces and

cultural centres, drains, roads, footpaths and trails as the 'big ticket' items in the budget at a cost of $39.49 million.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the budget had been developed with the community's needs in mind.

"Much of this budget has been about planning for the future," he said.

"We want to refresh our ageing infrastructure through asset renewal works, and replace community facilities that are out-dated.

He said within the capital works program $6.43 million has been allocated to parks, open space and streetscapes.

The total capital works program amounts to $64.29 million, including $18.07 million worth of projects carried forward from 201718. $51.75 million will go to asset renewals, upgrades and expansions and $12.54 million to new projects.

The Civic Centre Redevelopment in Lilydale will receive $1.35m and is among a number of proposed spends in around the Lilydale, Mount Evelyn and the hills areas including the extension to the Olinda Creek Trail from Swansea Road between Belvedere and York Road - $225,000, a BMX Pump Track at Mount Evelyn $100,000 Monbulk Community Sports Pavilion construction $2.2m, Burrinja Cultural Centre redevelopment at Upwey $1.25m, Upwey Community Sports Pavilion construction $550,000 Olinda Township improvements $298,000, Upwey Playspace construction $100,000.

Cr Cox said a major investment in roads amounting to $16.44 million was included in the budget.

"Many projects will benefit from the $1.6 million received from the Federal Government for the completion of much-needed Roads to Recovery projects," he said.

Cr Cox said China's restrictions on importation of certain recycled materials had put significant cost pressures on local councils with Yarra Ranges Council now having to pay to have recycling materials processed.

He said the council was committed to ensuring they do not send recyclable materials to landfill but added that the $1.06 million dollars they used to receive as payment for selling recyclable materials was no longer happening with the council having to now bear the cost, estimated at up to $1.07million a year.

Will you be supporting the Greens' call for full cannabis legislation in Australia?

Yes. What are some of the main reasons in the thinking behind this policy?

Cannabis prohibition has failed. Interaction with criminal dealers (rather than trained professionals in safe, regulated outlets) is putting people at risk. This means the cannabis products they purchase are of unknown strength and quality.

The Greens' plan provides for education about the potential risks associated with chronic cannabis consumption; and those selling cannabis would be required to undertake responsible service training, as well as mental health first aid course.

The money raised through tax revenue, and saved in law enforcement response, would be invested in drug treatment services, mental health services and drug education programs.

Has this policy specifically drawn from other models around the world?

We are playing catch-up with other countries around the world that have moved to legalise cannabis, but this means that we have the opportunity to learn from them.

Can this policy be successfully adapted in Australia?

Australia is a unique country and for this reason our plan includes a fully independent review after two years of implementation.

If implemented, what changes could this mean for the nation and the Yarra Ranges?

Legalising cannabis will create a commercial market for its production and sale. This will create jobs and, in turn, boost the economy.

Yarra Ranges can look forward to a portion of the revenue raised through taxation of cannabis being redirected to drug treatment, health education and harm reduction.

Do you think this change will gain much support in Australia?

Here, in Australia, support for legalising cannabis is strong and growing. In January 2017, a poll of over 1000 Australians by Essential Media found that 55% of respondents thought cannabis should be taxed and regulated like alcohol or tobacco, and only 26% opposed.

Are you concerned that, if implemented,

this will result in a higher use of cannabis in Australia?

The consumption of illicit cannabis in Australia is rising. Thirty-five per cent of Australians have used cannabis. This means that millions of Australians are forced to buy cannabis of unknown quality of strength from criminal drug dealers. Protecting young people from cannabis use is a key objective of the legalisation; we would have strict prohibition on sale to minors and penalties for breach of that. Criminal drug dealers have no such barriers.

Any final thoughts on the policy?

It's time for us to acknowledge that cannabis prohibition has failed. The war on drugs has done nothing to stop, or even reduce, the use of cannabis. Legalising the production and sale of cannabis removes drug dealers from the equation. Our approach is focused on reducing harm and keeping people safe.

Funds are currently being directed to ineffective law enforcement responses, when they could be spent on drug education and health services.

A call for inclusion

By Rowan Forster A former head of Emerald Secondary College's council has lambasted the "systemic" dismantling of the school's inclusion program.

It comes after it was recently revealed student aide positions had been slashed in a series of cutbacks.

Rachelle Miechielsen, former treasurer and vice president of Emerald College's school council, claimed the positions were "strategically" slashed to fund other initiatives.

"It was a bad decision but they wouldn't let the council have a say because it was an operational matter, and we were only responsible for oversight," she said.

"The school used to be really good at supporting students with additional needs, but now that has all changed."

Ms Mechielsen, who left the position after a series of disagreements in February, believes the shortfall needs to be urgently addressed.

"They just aren't receiving the support that they should be," she said.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin has also rallied behind calls for the Andrews Government to address the reported issues at the school, also citing "hazardous mould, dangerous floors and rotting roofs" inside the school's walls.

"While James Merlino and Daniel Andrews run around promoting Victoria as the 'Education State', it is clear this doesn't apply for Emerald Secondary College, who are having their urgent please for help ignored," he said.

A petition, demanding action from the Department of Education, has surpassed 500 signatures in the span of one week.

Frustrations continue to simmer among Emerald parents, who feel let down by the department's "lack of support" for the school.

"As if these kids don't already have enough challenges in life and at school," Lynne Pearce said.

In one instance, a child reportedly climbed atop a bench with an active Bunsen burner and the teacher was left to manage the chaos, while managing the rest of her class.

When contacted, the Department of Education said Emerald Secondary College was adequately funded to support its students.

"Emerald Secondary College currently employs seven teacher aides and provides a range of additional support, including a speech pathologist, counsellor, physiotherapist, and through its literacy and numeracy intervention program and social skills program," a department spokeswoman said.

"Teaching staff and coordinators are being provided with ongoing professional learning to ensure they continue to meet the individual educational and wellbeing needs of students."

Yarra Ranges Council is set to power ahead with its renewable energy project, with numerous initiatives announced on Friday 20 April.

Council will double its solar panel installations, upgrade more than 1000 lights and dramatically reduce its carbon footprint in the coming year under its Carbon Management Program.

The current stage of the program details works to upgrade council's buildings with solar panels and energy-efficient lighting from December 2017 to June 2019.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said the program was already delivering results for council's carbon footprint and its power bills. "Last year, we installed solar panels at Sherbrooke Family and Children's Centre in Upwey," Cr Cox said.

"As a direct result of the power generated there, we haven't had an electricity bill for the centre since November.

"In the next financial year, we're expecting our electricity prices to double, so the fact that we're generating enough power to reduce some of our bills to zero will save us all plenty in the long run."

At the end of the project, 4000 solar panels will have been installed on council buildings and 1000s of lighting systems will be updated to LEDs, saving council about $360,000 over the three-year period.

"In terms of environmental impact, the amount of emissions we will reduce will compare to high-rise city building," Cr Cox said.

LETTERS Adani fight not over yet Stop Adani Belgrave hosted a community screening on Sunday 22 April of the latest Stop Adani documentary, 'A Mighty Force', at the Tecoma Uniting Church.

'A Mighty Force' is the story of the unstoppable movement to stop the Adani mining company from building the world's biggest coal mine near the Great Barrier Reef.

Stop Adani Belgrave is one of 160 Stop Adani Groups Australia wide and has supported people to take action with over 1000 events taking place in the first year.

Stop Adani Belgrave members have written members to parliamentarians, held demonstrations, surveyed locals and met with (La Trobe MP) Jason Wood to gain his position on the issue.

Mr Wood released a statement via Facebook in September 2017 stating his opposition to the $1 billion loan of public money to the

Adani mining company to finance the coal rail project.

He also expressed his concerns of the environmental impacts of the mine.

Pressure from Stop Adani groups culminated in the Queensland State Government's veto of the loan - a big win for the moment.

However, the fight to stop Adani is not over yet.

We need to get bi-partisan support to revoke mining and water approvals and stop all public subsidies to the mining giant.

Our reliance on coal is changing our climate and severely impacting the health of our environment, and, in turn, our economy.

It's time to say no to coal and move to a renewable energy future.

Back-flippers need ousting In relation to Geoff Champion's letter, 'Silver lining on red shirt rort' ('Mail', 3 April), it was Daniel Andrews' backflip two months before the election, to appease the Greens, which cost Victoria over $1 billion.

Add to this: $2 billion - and counting - cost blowout on the level-crossing removals, the red shirt rorting and taxpayer funding the legal costs trying to stop the investigation, the speaker and deputy speaker rorting, Victorians over housing allowances and the chaufferdriven dogs rorts.

Then you have Daniel Andrews' determination to destroy the CFA as a pay back to Peter Marshall and the United Firefighters Union.

These are just some of the reasons why this inept Government needs to be kicked out in November.

Lockyer locked in Former Collingwood star Tarkyn Lockyer is set to pull on the boots for Gembrook-Cockatoo in the AFL Yarra Ranges competition this season.

According to the club, the 227-game AFL player has announced he is keen to become involved with the club, through player and coach development, as well as playing when his schedule permits.

Lockyer is due to make his debut with the club in the Brookers' match against Yarra Junction at home next Saturday 28 April.

He was a representative in the 2002 grand final team, which lost to Brisbane Lions, and carved out a respected career during which he kicked 149 goals, despite mainly playing defensive roles.

Liberal candidate for Monbulk, John Schurink, has announced $40,051 to deliver automated school zone flashing speed signs for Sassafras Primary School.

Mr Schurink said a Liberal Nationals Government would work with VicRoads to remind drivers to slow down around school and obey the speed limit during school hours.

Ambulances go first-rate Families in Belgrave can have peace of mind in knowing local paramedics now have the facilities they need to respond to emergencies faster, with the opening of a state-of-the-art ambulance branch.

Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP James Merlino on Saturday 21 April officially opened the new $1.7 million ambulance station in Rutherford Road, Tecoma.

The modern, purpose-built facility has three ambulance bays, four rest and recline areas, a training space, study area and meal preparation facility.

The 24-hour facility is home to 18 paramedics who rotate through ambulances attached to the branch.

These hard-working paramedics now have the larger and modern facilities they deserve, Mr Merlino said.

"In a medical emergency, every second counts. Families in Monbulk and beyond can have peace of mind that paramedics are getting to life-threatening emergencies faster than they ever have before."

In Yarra Ranges Shire, Mr Merlino said there has been significant improvement in ambulance response times, with 73.9 per cent of ambulances now arriving within 15 minutes for Code One emergencies, up from 62.9 per cent compared to one year earlier.

The average time for an ambulance to reach the scene of a Code One emergency in the Yarra Ranges over the same period has improved from 15.05 minutes to 12.41 minutes.

Audiences warm to East

By Peter Douglas Up-and-coming South Belgrave executive producer, Lachlan Nash, has helped to secure a second season for his show, 'The Modern Middle East'.

What started out as a collaboration between friends has grown into a unique, wellreceived project, with the first season gaining unexpectedly high ratings.

Nash said he never anticipated such a positive response, or the breadth of potential topics.

"We've only just began to touch the surface of what we'd like to cover," he said.

"Our ultimate aim is to help foster a more positive image of the Middle East. Yes, there are conflicts - but a lot of people are doing good in the region, too. Then, there is the significant history."

'The Modern Middle East', which is presented by Nash's friend Gemma Neary, reports on everything from escalating protests and diplomatic blockades, to the discovery of ancient artefacts in Egypt.

The first series aired weekly on Channel 31 in 2017, with an average of 10,000-40,000 viewers an episode.

Season 2 is scheduled to broadcast Australia-wide on Foxtel's Aurora channel on 6.30pm Thursday nights, from 12 July to 27 September.

The second season intends to increase the production scale and further engage audiences, through in-depth analysis and guest interviews.

Nash said the project has evolved organically and was created simply through pursuing his own interests.

"I've always had a keen interest in politics and world affairs. But I've also been involved in theatre in various roles, including writing, set-design and performing," he said.

"It felt like a natural fit. The show highlights news, offers editorial slots and a chance to interview people on many relevant topics, such

as religion, resource politics and power-plays."

Nash said the show was important, because he wants to impart knowledge and inspire younger generations.

In an effort to further the show, the team have set up a crowd-funding campaign.

The funds will go towards three of the production's most significant expenses: studio hire, catering for the crew and broadcast fees.

A day to remember, reflect

By Peter Douglas Anzac Day ceremonies held throughout the Yarra Ranges in 2018 paid tribute to Australian and New Zealand veterans, past and present.

Many citizens rose early to pay their respects at dawn services, with local RSLs putting together some typically incredible events.

Ceremonies in Cockatoo, Ferny Creek, Emerald, Monbulk, Belgrave and more gave the chance for citizens to unite and offer a tribute for members of the Australian Defence Force, past and present.

At the Ferny Creek dawn service, the Dandenong Ranges RSL, the Ferny Creek Scouts and fellow community groups combined to ensure a respectful, well-attended service.

Guest speaker, Lt Rebecca Schwarz, from the 15th Force Support Squadron, expressed a deep respect for the Anzacs.

"The first Anzacs indeed commanded the respect and remembrance of present and future generations of Australians - so do those who have served and fallen in the Second World War, and conflicts (since)," Lt Schwarz said.

"A life offered up on the defence of their community is the greatest contribution which any citizen can make to their nation."

Lt Schwarz encouraged all who attended to be "guided by the Anzac Spirit".

For the march in Emerald, the Emerald RSL helped to continue the tradition, with thousands of citizens, and school and community groups, in attendance.

Among the guest speakers included Marley Gusts, a school captain from Emerald Secondary College.

Ms Gusts said the younger generations would continue to honour the Anzacs.

"It is often hard to fathom a world ravaged with war. As young people, we have never experienced the turmoil that war brings," she said.

For another year The Hills Band lead the Anzac Day march down Monbulk main street.

"Despite this, we recognise April 25th as the date to reflect on how privileged we are to live in a peaceful country.

"This peace is only achieved through the sacrifice of many military soldiers and personnel, who laid down their lives to enable our future."

By Russell Bennett On Saturday 28 April, Emerald's Warwick March umpired his 600th game of footy - an astonishing feat by any measure.

Only, as Warwick estimates, the actual number would be much closer to 1000 games, which is simply incredible.

"You'd probably need to add another 400 to 500 games of junior on top of that because the records don't go that far back, the 42-year-old said.

Marsh has been umpiring football for 26 years, starting from when he was 16.

He's been a senior umpire for more than one decade.

He left the Emerald Football Club in the mid-1990s to play at Coldstream and, later, Lilydale - including captaining the latter's seconds for two years in the Eastern Football League's first division.

But a rising injury toll, combined with what was still an undying love of the game, pushed him into umpiring.

"Umpiring (juniors) on the Sundays is probably the best part now," he said.

"You might umpire some Under 9s or Under 10s and they just want to play footy. It's really enjoyable.

"You just see the excitement when their grandparents come and watch, and they get two or three kicks and a mark, and then they go home and probably re-enact it at school the next day."

Marsh has umpired senior senior finals in the AFL Yarra Ranges competition for the past four years, including grand finals in the past two.

He says those are among his highlights, along with umpiring the likes of Gary Moorcroft, David Wirrpanda, Michael Firrito, Rory Sloane and

But umpiring alongside his dad, Keith, and umpiring games his younger brother, Clinton, played in - those moments are truly special.

Keith got Warwick into umpiring in the first place.

He turns 75 in July and has umpired for 45 years and is still going strong.

The Cardinia Shire Council is on the hunt for the township's next generation of leaders.

Applications are now open for the 2018 Cardinia Community Leadership Program, encouraging emerging leaders to step up to the challenge.

Delivered through a partnership between Council and Leadership Victoria, the program helps develop leadership skills and community participation.

Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Colin Ross, said the free program provides up to 20 participants with an opportunity to grow their leadership skills and networks, and learn from the experiences and advice of a host of guest speakers, local leaders, and program alumni.

"This program covers a wide range of topics that it will assist participants to build their capacity as leaders within their local neighbourhoods, groups or organisations. Participants can hone their skills in setting and achieving goals, becoming better problems-solvers and innovators, and learn how to best collaborate with others," Cr Ross said.

"I would encourage all aspiring and emerging leaders within Cardinia Shire to apply.

"If you are passionate about your community and are ready to learn, connect, and grow so that you can confidently and competently lead the way to a better future for your community, then this is an opportunity you cannot pass up."

The six-month course, which runs from June to November, is designed to prepare participants for success in their community leadership roles.

Applicants should review the information available on council's website to ensure they are eligible to undertake the program.

Fashion for a cause Monbulk Care Network (MCN) will host its third Annual Fashion Parade on Thursday 10 May at 6:30pm at their new premises based at 61-63 Main Road in Monbulk.

This year's event will be parading 1920's evening and daywear outfits and accessories.

A professional full high tea will be served by the Lady Night Hawks CWA and Speak Easy DJ, Mr Flux will be providing appropriate music from the era throughout the evening.

Monbulk Care Network will also be hosting their traditional marketplace in the Laneway Nursery with stalls featuring jewellery, afternoon tea accessories, accessories for the home, puzzles and games, and the MCN nursery will, of course, be operating.

Monbulk Care Network is an outreach of the Open Door Community Church, which seeks to be a localised, authentic expression of Christian faith.

are struggling.

Funds that are raised through the fashion parade and stalls will go to local community projects.

Nuts about chestnuts

Two things will meet visitors to the Kalorama Chestnut Festival this weekend, the blaze of brightly coloured leaves and the waft of roasting chestnuts.

From humble beginnings over 30 years ago, the event has grown from parents selling chestnuts out of brown paper bags to now being one of the most popular events in the hills.

The fundraising hosted by the Mt Dandenong Preschool, has become an iconic festival and a much-loved family day out for not only the local community but visitors seeking a taste of autumn in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges.

In the lead up to the Festival, the kinder community comes together to harvest fresh chestnuts from local farms which they then sell roasted, fresh or transformed into something yummy like chest nut truffles or chestnut soup.

This Year, parent Freya Ormsby said they had collected an incredible 500kg's of chestnuts.

"For about six weeks we organise chestnut picks at local properties ... people kindly let us into their backyards and this year we collected around 500kg of chestnuts," she said.

"We sell them at the festival roasted and raw and people can get a bag of hot roasted chestnuts and glass of mulled wine."

Each year, a new generation of local kinder families take the reins, lovingly carrying on

This year, that hint of something new comes in the form of Chestnut beer said co-organiser Freya Ormsby.

"We have Dutch pancakes with chestnut cream, hot food, coffee stalls, a lot of local food, Bavaria bangers and heaps of other gourmet foods ... this year we also have chestnut beer, which is a very exciting new addition," she said.

The free event is held at the Kalorama Reserve on Sunday, May 6, from 10am to 4pm.

The brigade only realised this impressive milestone after their 100th centenary, when they dug a bit deeper into the history books said Captain Cliff Pancutt.

"It's in its 50th year now ... previously we were only up to 50 , but due to our centenary investigations we discovered it has actually run for 50 years."

"It's still one of the biggest and best jumble sales around the hills," Captain of Upwey CFA Cliff Pancutt said.

The annual infamous jumble sale, scheduled for Saturday 5 May 2018, will be the 50th time the Upwey Volunteer Fire Brigade have suited up and set the hills ablaze with one of the biggest jumble sales in the Dandenong Ranges.

If you drop in on the day between 9am and 3pm you'll be sure to find a boat-load full of bargains, which the event has always be known to provide.

Some surprise results and some good games were witnessed by supporters and the Yarra Valley Community.

The winners in senior football: Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey-Tecoma, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Gembrook-Cockatoo, Seville, Yea and Yarra Glen.

Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 19.21.135 d Warburton Millgrove 8.13.61 Healesville opened their account at the expense of Warburton by a solid margin of 74 points. Healesville got the jump in the first, kicking seven goals to two and the lead was a handy 27 points, even though the scoring shoots were rather even. In the second, it was Healesville's turn to be wasteful in front of goal 3.7 to 1.2 but the margin was still now 50 points and it was going to be tough for Warburton to peg that back. The third quarter was a better contest but Healesville still managed to increase their lead to 63 points. Healesville again peppered the goals in the last kicking 4.7 to 3.2; and although he margin was convincing, if Healesville can straighten up in front of goals their winning margins could be huge this year.

They came out all guns blazing in the first and kicked 9.4 to 1 behind to make an amazing start to their defence. The second quarter was an in and under tough 30 minutes of football as neither side could find any space which on Yarra Glen's ground is hard to believe but there were only seven scoring shots in the whole quarter and one goal, which Alexandra snagged, and they outscored Yarra Glen in the quarter. Yarra Glen upped the ante again in the third and kicked six to three to extend their lead out to 71 points at three-quarter-time.

The last quarter was again tight but Yarra Glen kicked two goals, while Alexandra could only manage two behinds. Yarra Glen was lucky that two quarters of football won this game; they won't get that luxury again.

Duncan steams ahead Puffing Billy's engine wasn't the only thing blowing off steam in the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday 29 May. Rising early, 2203 runners took to the rugged terrain to race against the historic locomotive in the 37th annual Great Train Race.

The race is one of the oldest and most popular events of the Australian running calendar.

A new women's record was set over the 13.5km distance at this year's race, with Upwey-Tecoma's Melissa Duncan finishing the race in 48. 27s.

Her time was 28 seconds faster than the previous record-holder - and in her first attempt at running the Great Train Race!

Duncan used the race as training and preparation in the lead up to her 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign.

She was selected to run in the 2016 Rio Olympics; however, a foot injury resulted in her needing two operations and she was unable to compete.

Duncan was hoping to get fit for this year's Commonwealth Games, but due to ongoing injury issues was not able to compete.

She now has her sights firmly set on Tokyo, where she is hoping to qualify for the 1500m.

This year's overall race winner was Nick Earl from Brunswick, who crossed the line in 42.56s.

Earl was thrilled to win the race for a second time in a row, beating his previous result by 15 seconds.

Puffing Billy crossed the line in 53.39s, which was almost two minutes faster than in 2017, possibly due to the fine weather this year.

Campbell Maffett from Northcote won the Veteran Male (aged 40 and over) with a time of 49 minutes and 38 seconds.

Tracey Austin from Kew won the Veteran Female (aged 40 and over) with a time of 53.37s.

Thousands of runners took part in the 37th installment of the annual Puffing Billy race.

The Under 18 Male Winner was Luke Nicholson from San Remo who ran in 50.37s.

The Under 18 Female Winner was JaimeeLee Code from Narre Warren North who ran in 52.56s.

President of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, Jeff Goodwin, said the race is a major fundraiser for the not-for-profit railway, with all money raised going towards preservation projects that will ensure that the next generation can appreciate the history of Puffing Billy.

ceeds from the 2018 Great Train Race will see further development of the Menzies Creek Museum project. This facility will provide an undercover area to store treasured railway artefacts and provide a space for the public to learn about Puffing Billy's past," Mr Goodwin said.
