BY LUKE VOOGT HIGHTON’S Ben Richards has reason to be bashful after a Pako barber lopped off his monster beard to raise $10,000plus for children in need.

“I’m in hiding at the moment. I'm refusing to come out,” the 27-year-old said.

Ben had raised about $7000 for Gateways Support Service, when he spoke to Voice on Pako on 19 March, with money still coming in from a silent auction.

Pako barber Glen Neilsen donated a signed 2009 Collingwood Anzac Day jumper and a signed Gold Coast Titans jumper, while Ben scored a 2018 Cats jumper for the cause.

“My sister’s fianc¨¦e, Tom Stewart, plays for them,” he said.

“Once they’re sold I reckon we’ll hit the $10,000 mark.”

The fly in, fly out worker was “sitting around at home“ during a break from trips to WA in 2016, when he decided to help children with disabilities through Gateways.

“I take them out to the movies and to see the cats. On Christmas I rode in dressed as Santa Class on my Harley Davidson.”

A family friend and the son of another close friend, both with autism, inspired him to volunteer.

“This was a good way to learn more about it,” he said.

“It’s just nice to give back to the community that’s given so much to me.”

Ben said goodbye to his three-yearold beard outside Rex & Ross Barber on 17 March.

“She was a big one,” he said.

“There were so many people that came we had to do it outside!”

He was “so flat out getting everything sorted” that morning he had no time to reconsider.

“I’m not looking forward to the comments,” he said.

“Saturday night I was having a beer and I kept going to grab it - but it wasn’t there!

“I was still eating like I had a beard and everybody was laughing.”

But it’s all for a good cause - with the money going towards Queensland trips for Gateways families.

“We’re trying to send as many families as can up there to the theme parks for a much-needed time off,” Ben said.

And, luckily, Ben is heading off soon to an oil rig on Bass Straight.

“I only got the phone call for the job this week,” he said.

“I have to be clean shaven for that so it works out really well.”

Gateways provides services for children and adults with disabilities, specialising in intellectual disabilities.

With Pako Farmers Market returning to Ashby Primary School on the second and fourth Saturdays of this month, here are 10 reasons why locals should get along: 1. The food is fresh. After all, it’s often been picked the day before.

2. Farmers Market foods are more seasonal, so our eating is more in tune with nature.

3. Farmers Markets keep dollars in our

region. Why would we want to send hard-earned money elsewhere when jobs and our economy need a boost here?

4. We get to meet the people who grow our food. They are often real characters, and they certainly know what it takes to put food on your plate.

5. Organic fruits and veggies are often cheaper. After all, you’re not paying for supermarket overheads.

6. You’re exploring local flavours.

Often farmers market food is grown or made only by the people selling it. It’s how regional flavours are made.

7. You’re getting some fresh air. No more sterile fluorescent shopping aisles, you’re breathing real air and whatever the weather decides to give you on the day.

8. It’s a day out. Farmers Markets always have a festive feel to them, and who doesn’t love a good party?

9. It teaches your kids a better way of eating. Reconnect them to their food and give them lifelong skills and memories to draw on later in life.

We're settling in and setting tone, say councillors

BY COUNCILLORS PETER MURRIHY, SARAH MANSFIELD AND EDDY KONTELJ IT’S been roughly five months since our election to council last November, and we’re beginning to set the tone for the type of group we plan to be.

First and foremost, we want to be consultative - both on Brownbill ward matters and ideas for the whole of Geelong. Attending community events has been a highlight because it’s given us a chance to hear people’s views.

An important decision we’ve just made as a council is to reintroduce portfolios. We think this is the best way to represent the community on important matters, and it also gives us an opportunity to delve more deeply into the areas we’re passionate about.

Cr Murrihy will co-chair the Social and Infrastructure Planning portfolio, and has been appointed deputy chair of Tourism and Events.

Cr Kontelj will chair both Transportation and Connections, and Veterans’ Affairs. And Cr Mansfield will also chair two portfolios: Inclusive and Diverse Community, and Environment and Sustainability.

Of course, taking on these portfolios won’t shift our focus from strongly representing our ward.

One project creating discussion is the planned bike connections from central Geelong to the west and south of the city.

These are being funded with a $4.7 million grant from the TAC. The western link, which runs from the CBD to Herne Hill via Geelong

West, will make it easier and safer to cycle to Pako Street, which should encourage more people to the area.

Consultation has been an important

part of the process - City officers have run drop-in sessions and sent letters to get feedback from local residents and traders.

Long term, the bike connections should help in creating less congested roads, cleaner air and a healthier population.

The Pako Festa is a unique annual event with a strong blending of cultures and community spirit.

Festa another big success

BY CHRISTINE COUZENS, MEMBER FOR GEELONG THE Pako Festa is a unique annual event with a strong blending of cultures, community spirit and involvement that attracts over 100,000 visitors on the day.

The event is delivered by Diversitat, a not-for-profit association, representing 40 affiliated ethnic groups and over 60,000 people of non-English speaking background in the Geelong region.

I am proud that the Andrews Government provides financial support

for this major Geelong event.

It was again a fantastic day, watching the wonderful parade of the many different cultural communities who make up our beautiful multicultural Geelong.

It is always great to set up my marquee and give members of the Geelong community the opportunity to drop in for a chat. The Street parade is one of the best community events on offer. People of all nations, ages and groups participate in the vibrant parade dancing, singing, in tradition costume, entertaining the

crowds lining the street.

Diversitat’s Pako Festa is a much loved community festival, which makes a significant contribution to our region and state’s social capital through its annual celebration of the values of ethnic diversity, acceptance and harmony.

Held on the last weekend of February each year on Pakington Street in Geelong West, Geelong’s ‘multicultural heart’, Pako Festa incorporates an extravagant street parade, traditional foods, beautiful music and dance, authentic costumes,

community arts, exhibitions and interactive workshops.

The festival provides regional communities an opportunity to take ownership of an event with which they can identify. Beyond the appreciation and enjoyment of music, traditional foods and dance, the Pako Festa provides a unique opportunity for visitors to socialise and celebrate in harmony regardless of ethnic origin.

Congratulations to Diversitat for another successful 2018 Pako Festa.

A mother and child sit aboard an enormous whale as it travels through a sea of silver. All manner of creatures join them on the journey, both before they reach the water and then as they travel through a changing ocean.

Sometimes the water is deep and dark, other times bright with wonder. Sometimes the two hold each other, closely or by hand and at others they travel close but not together, all the way home.

This is a beautiful picture book brought to us from the children at RCH who provided the artwork and the lovely lyrical text from two masters of picture book language. A wonderful gift for a new baby or a Christening.

Rose knows Bohemian clothes Trips to Byron Bay and a love of glamorous costumes inspired Rosie Giannini to open her Boho store, Qloset, in Pako.

The Voice spoke to Rose to find out more about her passion for fashion.

I’ve always loved the natural look - high maintenance is just not my thing. I can relate to all my brands as they offer comfortable, luxurious styles with a modern Bohemian feel.

Tell us about yourself.

Everybody just knows me as Rose. I have a five-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son.

I grew up in Wollongong and then moved to Sydney to further my career in fashion.

I met my husband in Sydney, who was working in a different company in the same building. We moved to Geelong six years ago and my husband works in fashion too.

What got you into the business?

I’ve always worked for other businesses, so I knew I could do it. After having kids I really wanted to get back into the work force.

I launched my shop online in August 2016. Our spare bedroom became a store room and needed more space.

I started from scratch - I didn’t know how to work the back end of the website and after many, many late nights I learned a lot.

We decided to branch into a store as I was really missing the customer interaction.

What makes your store unique?

I offer exclusive brands, a relaxed, creative and friendly vibe, great customer service and a combination of labels not found elsewhere.

I genuinely love all the clothes and homewares I select if I wouldn’t buy it, I wouldn’t sell it.

How did you become involved in the fashion industry?

At age 17 I started working in retail for General Pants and Surf Dive n Ski while completing a fashion course.

I’ve worked for Australian and international designers, including Religion, Mavi Jeans, Puma, Fila, Milk and Honey and Urban Originals.

What new stock do you have?

I have a new collection, Bloom, by Byron Bay brand Arnhem, which has just arrived in store. A new collection by Auguste The Label will be in store in a week.

I like lots of linen and beautiful fabrics with a neutral colour palette.

Where does your passion for fashion come from?

I loved fashion from an early age. I wore glamorous costumes from age 5 as a dancer.

What does the word Bohemian mean to you?

Most of my brands are based in Byron Bay, the Australian

What got you into all things Bohemian?

Every year a group of us girls would take turns driving to Byron Bay and it became a ritual we never missed.

I’ve always lived close to the ocean and loved the Byron beaches. My ideal day would be to wander the vintage markets there.

What attracted you to Pakington Street as a place to do business?

I was never going to open in a shopping centre as I have always preferred street shopping. Pakington Street has a lot of character and cool cafes.

It’s great getting to know the locals and business owners who have become regular customers and friends.

How much work did it take to complete the store?

The website took about six months. It was all trial and error as I’ve never been that computer savvy. I also did a small business management course online before opening to get my skills up to scratch.

Who would you like to have dinner with, alive or dead?

I would love to chat with Nicole Richie. She has her own brand empire and her style is effortlessly impeccable.

She really knows her fashion.

Tell us something about you that people may not know?

I owned my own dancing school at age 17 and made all my students’ dance costumes.

Rosie Giannini has a flare for Bohemian wares.

WITH winter fast approaching, the short days and cold nights will soon be accompanied by coughs, colds and in some cases, the flu.

And while some people may resign themselves to a yearly dose of misery, there are things you can do to help protect you and your family. Here’s your crash course in cold & flu protection.

First up, the difference between a cold and the flu. They’re both caused by a virus, and they can both give you similar symptoms, such as a blocked or runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, and generally feeling lousy.

But the flu (influenza) is a much more severe illness, symptoms appear very quickly and it makes you feel very weak and tired – you may even have trouble getting out of bed.

Severe illness and complications, such as pneumonia, make the flu particularly bad for people aged over 65, children less than five years, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and those with other chronic health conditions.

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is simple – get the flu shot. It’s a yearly vaccine that protects against the most common strains of influenza virus and significantly reduces your risk of developing the flu. It also helps protect the rest of the community by limiting the virus’ transmission from person to person. The flu vaccine is recommended for all people aged 6 months and over.

You can get the flu vaccine at your local pharmacy (for adults over 18 years), including Community Care Chemist, or from your GP. The flu vaccine won’t stop you from getting a cold, because it’s caused by a different virus. But you can still reduce your risk – good hand hygiene, especially after coughing or sneezing, helps to reduce the spread of the virus, and some vitamins and supplements may help to boost your immune system and get you better quicker if you’ve come down with a cold. Antibiotics aren’t recommended as they only work against bacteria, not viruses, so don’t ask your doctor for them.

Whether you’re going to spend this winter rugged up in front of the fire or out and about embracing the cold, don’t forget your flu shot.
